Transcript
- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is, the 27th of October.
- 0:16Goodness me, how are we almost at the end of October?
- 0:20November will be upon us before the week is out.
- 0:23Wow. Anyway, we are not only
- 0:27finishing this month, but we are also drawing the book of Romans
- 0:30to a close. We have got two more chapters
- 0:32where Paul will continue laying out his plans to draw this
- 0:36church together, Jews and Gentiles, focusing on their
- 0:41dedication and living for Christ as their centre point rather
- 0:45than their cultural identity. And then we're going to dive
- 0:50straight into the book of James, that most practical of books
- 0:55that will take us into next week, but that is yet to come.
- 0:59For now, let us continue to read through and bring to an end this
- 1:04book of Romans, as Paul writes to these Jewish Christians,
- 1:08returning to Rome, finding a church very Gentile, and working
- 1:13out how do we do community together.
- 1:15And the first half of this chapter is about living not to
- 1:19please yourself, but to please others, which is always very
- 1:23helpful advice no matter what part of history we find
- 1:25ourselves in. So friends, let's dive straight
- 1:28into it. Reading together Romans chapter
- 1:3015. We who are strong must be
- 1:42considerate of those who are sensitive about things like
- 1:45this. We must not just please
- 1:48ourselves. We should help others do what is
- 1:50right and build them up in the Lord.
- 1:53For even Christ didn't live to please himself, as the
- 1:57Scriptures say. The insults of those who insult
- 2:00you, O God, have fallen on me. Such things were written in the
- 2:06Scriptures long ago to teach us. And the Scriptures give us hope
- 2:10and encouragement as we wait patiently for God's promises to
- 2:14be fulfilled. May God, who gives this patience
- 2:18and encouragement, help you live in complete harmony with each
- 2:22other, as is fitting for followers of Christ Jesus.
- 2:27Then all of you can join together with one voice, giving
- 2:30praise and glory to God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 2:36Therefore, accept each other just as Christ has accepted you,
- 2:41so that God will be given glory. Remember that Christ came as a
- 2:45servant to the Jews to show that God is true to the promises He
- 2:50made to their ancestors. He also came so that the
- 2:54Gentiles might give glory to God for his mercies to them.
- 2:58That is what the psalmist meant when he wrote for this.
- 3:02I will praise you among the Gentiles.
- 3:04I will sing praises to your name, and in another place it is
- 3:08written, Rejoice with his people, you Gentiles, and yet
- 3:13again praise the Lord, all you Gentiles, praise him, all you
- 3:18people of the earth. And in another place, Isaiah
- 3:22said, the heir to David's throne will come, and he will rule over
- 3:27the Gentiles. They will place their hope on
- 3:30him. I pray that God, the source of
- 3:34hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you
- 3:40trust in Him. Then you will overflow with
- 3:44confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.
- 3:49I'm fully convinced, my dear brothers and sisters, that you
- 3:52are full of goodness. You know these things so well,
- 3:56you can teach each other all about them.
- 3:59Even so, I've been bold enough to write about some of these
- 4:02points, knowing that all you need is a reminder.
- 4:06For by God's grace, I am a special messenger from Christ
- 4:10Jesus. To you, Gentiles, I bring you
- 4:14the good news so that I might present you as an acceptable
- 4:17offering to God, made holy by the Holy Spirit.
- 4:21So I have reason to be enthusiastic about all Christ
- 4:25Jesus has done through me in my service to God.
- 4:29Yet I dare not boast about anything except what Christ has
- 4:33done through me, bringing the Gentiles to God by my message
- 4:37and by the way I worked among them.
- 4:40They were convinced by the power of miraculous signs and wonders
- 4:44and by the power of God's Spirit.
- 4:46In this way I have fully presented the good news of
- 4:50Christ from Jerusalem all the way to Illyricum.
- 4:55My ambition has always been to preach the good news where the
- 4:58name of Christ has never been heard, rather than where a
- 5:02church has already been started by someone else.
- 5:05I've been following the plans spoken of in the Scriptures,
- 5:08where it says those who have never been told about Him will
- 5:12see, and those who have never heard of him will understand.
- 5:17In fact, my visit to you has been delayed so long because
- 5:21I've been preaching in these places.
- 5:23But now I have finished my work in these regions and after all
- 5:27these long years of waiting, I am eager to visit you.
- 5:31I'm planning to go to Spain, and when I do, I will stop off in
- 5:35Rome. And after I've enjoyed your
- 5:38fellowship for a little while, you can provide for my journey.
- 5:42But before I come, I must go to Jerusalem to take a gift to the
- 5:46believers there. For you see, the believers in
- 5:49Macedonia and Ikaya have eagerly taken up an offering for the
- 5:53poor among the believers in Jerusalem.
- 5:56They were glad to do this because they feel they owe a
- 5:59real debt to them. Since the Gentiles received the
- 6:02spiritual blessings of the good news from the believers in
- 6:06Jerusalem, they feel the least they can do in return is to help
- 6:10them financially. As soon as I have delivered this
- 6:13money and completed this good deed of theirs, I will come to
- 6:17see you on my way to Spain, and I'm sure that when I come,
- 6:21Christ will richly bless our time together.
- 6:24Dear brothers and sisters, I urge you in the name of our Lord
- 6:27Jesus Christ, to join in my struggle by praying to God for
- 6:31me. Do this because of your love for
- 6:34me, given to you by the Holy Spirit.
- 6:38Pray that I will be rescued from those in Judea who refuse to
- 6:41obey God. Pray also that the believers
- 6:44there will be willing to accept the donation I'm taking to
- 6:47Jerusalem. Then, by the will of God, I will
- 6:51be able to come to you with a joyful heart, and we will be an
- 6:55encouragement to each other. And now May God, who gives us
- 7:00his peace, be with you all. Amen.
- 7:14Oh Jesus, thank you for this encouragement.
- 7:17Thank you for this teaching about putting the needs of
- 7:21others before ourselves by living with generosity and big
- 7:25hearts. And Lord, I just pray this
- 7:30blessing that Paul prays on those believers in Rome, that
- 7:36you, Lord, the source of hope, would fill us completely with
- 7:41joy and peace because we trust in You.
- 7:46Then we will overflow with confident hope through the power
- 7:50of the Holy Spirit. Oh, Father, let that confidence,
- 7:56let that hope be ours. Let that joy and that peace be
- 8:01ours because we trust in you. So shape our hearts to lean ever
- 8:07more closely into you and to your provision for us, so that
- 8:14our trust won't find its foundation in the things of this
- 8:17world, but would extend deep into you and our lives in you
- 8:24and your provision for us, our wonderful saving provider.
- 8:29God, we pray all of this in your name, Jesus, Amen.
