- 2:01Plus to put it mildly, there are some all out massacres last week in
- 2:06the world of high school football and there are a lot of reasons people are
- 2:08pointing two for that. One is a new high school transfer rule which pretty
- 2:13much allows high school student athletes to transfer to whatever, whenever school what they
- 2:16want to play sports without having to set out a year. Delegate Data Farrell
- 2:21of here in Kadan County, himself a long time educator, it's got a
- 2:23problem with that, and he's going to join us to talk about that a
- 2:25little bit later on and have you your opportunity to weigh in on that as
- 2:30well. Seems to have been a problem with the West Virginia poll, particularly
- 2:34the one that was released on Friday, as it pertains to the race for
- 2:37Republican governor. The Republican nomination for governor. Rex Repass was on Hoppey to
- 2:42explain it yesterday, and we're going to way in on that as well,
- 2:46Pluts I guess top before we get to our first guests this morning. The
- 2:51big story around here today tomorrow all of our stations is the WV Medicine Children's
- 2:54Cares for Kids Radio Thought Habiting today and tomorrow's sponsored by Stike Wealth Enhancement.
- 3:00You can call eight seven seven seven one nine fifty four thirty seven it's eight
- 3:04seven seven seven one nine kids to donate or text the word youth to three
- 3:08five six five one. That's three five six five one. Mentioned that Psyke
- 3:14Wealth Enhancement is the title sponsor, Poke Valley Bank sponsoring the text line,
- 3:17Pew Furniture sponsoring the Hope Room where everybody's located upstairs. Operators taking calls,
- 3:24Kidderous, Trojan Landing, Marine, Peyton Law Firm, Pepperoni, Grill,
- 3:28Chick fil A, all helping out too. So again, help us help
- 3:31these kids and the people who care for them. And we're gonna be talking
- 3:34about that a little bit more a little later on the show as well as
- 3:37on all of our stations as well. So lots to get to something big
- 3:40going on to Putnam County this weekend. It's the annual Putnam County Homecoming with
- 3:45us now Patty Ashworth and a gala tie part of the Putnam County home Coming.
- 3:49Ladies, Good morning, welcome to the show. Good morning, Wow,
- 3:53listen to it's like they're having a pointer sisters on here, perfect Youth.
- 3:57Did you guys rehearse that saying that at the same time like that?
- 4:00No, but we should have if we had rehearsed. It wouldn't have worked
- 4:04out, are they? I guess there's always a part of what goes on
- 4:08over there. They do have a talent competition. Is that still happening this
- 4:11year? No, it's not. Oh well, I was gonna say,
- 4:14you guess were perfect, You guess could have entered the talent competition. Oh
- 4:16well, thank you. How many years, ladies, has this thing been
- 4:20going on in Winfield? Ninety four? And is it true that Mayor Randy
- 4:27Barrett's been there for ninety three of them? What we're here? Yeah,
- 4:32it's a big event. I mean it is. It's one of the premier
- 4:35events in Putnham County. I'm talking about the Putnham County home coming down.
- 4:39What are the days and dates? We know the dates, but just give
- 4:42us the days. It's this coming Saturday the ninth and Sunday the tenth.
- 4:48And what all do we have going on? You said there's no talent show
- 4:51this year? But what do we have going on? Well, on Saturday,
- 4:56we have Maximum Velocity Wrestling. We'll be there in the afternoon to entertain
- 5:05and I think there'll probably be a big draw. People seem to like the
- 5:11like the wrestling entertainment. We have music from live music from the stage will
- 5:19be happening from two o'clock until probably about nine or ten o'clock that evening.
- 5:25We've got magicians that will be there that day. We've got a large car
- 5:30show that will be going on on the court House Hill. Let's see what
- 5:36else we've got going on that day. Oh, c amc has will be
- 5:43providing a healthfare there on Main Street from twelve until four thirty. Gaily want
- 5:49to tell him about Sunday. On Sunday, the festivities will start with the
- 5:56opening ceremonies with a flag raising at ten. We'll have a church service at
- 6:00ten forty five gospel music. After the church service, the Face Myers will
- 6:08be singing. At one o'clock introduction of the queens, and at one thirty
- 6:15the grand parade. And that parade is huge every year. I mean it
- 6:20is a big old parade, ladies. Yes, yes, And the church
- 6:26service is always that's kind of a unique thing, uh, but that's always
- 6:30been a part of it, at least, you know, for many many
- 6:31years. When I understands having that that that church service and sometimes people in
- 6:35that area well step away from their their normal church for a Sunday and everybody
- 6:40comes together for one big church service there right right, it is a community
- 6:45church service. Everyone is welcome and it's always very, very nice. And
- 6:50how much work goes into this thing? I know the answer is a lot,
- 6:54But I mean you literally, this is one of those things ladies that
- 6:57you once once this weekend is over, you'll start working on next year,
- 7:00as I presume. Yeah, probably the first part of October we start working
- 7:04on the events and trying to line up entertainment type of thing for next year.
- 7:13And there's always great food at the Putnam County Homecoming as well, we
- 7:17hope. So I've never had any complaints in the past, and I've gone
- 7:21every year, so I haven't had just nearly every year since I've lived there,
- 7:26I've never had any complaints. And again we're talking about Patty Ashworth and
- 7:29Galen Terry as part of the Puttnham County Homecoming. Is there a place where
- 7:33people can learn more about it? There is a website or a Facebook page
- 7:40Putnam County Homecoming Festival, And I believe there's just a website, isn't there.
- 7:46Yeah, Putnam County Homecoming dot Com. Here you go, So it's
- 7:49all right there for we Putnam County Homecoming dot Com again, give us the
- 7:54dates and the times again, go over the schedule again before we let you
- 7:57go. Ladies. Okay, it's Saturday, this coming Saturday. The night
- 8:03the entertainment will begin around two, so we will have craft vendors and food
- 8:09vendors that will be set up at noon, So from noon until seven o'clock
- 8:15that evening, Cody Wick one will take the stage and he'll probably be there
- 8:20for until about nine. Then on Sunday we start at ten o'clock with the
- 8:26flag raising and followed by the community church service by the gospel music that we
- 8:33also will end the day with the crowning of the new miss Putnam County.
- 8:39And that'll be on Sunday the tenth, and the grand Parade begins at one
- 8:43thirty. Anybody that wants to participate in the parade can still show up that
- 8:50day, but make sure you're there by noon so that the people in charge
- 8:54of the parade can work you into the line and that kind of thing.
- 9:00And explain the parade route again. It begins at on the Courthouse Hill or
- 9:05around the middle School area and those three town on the Maine eight seventeen down
- 9:13to the elementary school. Well, it's gonna be a lot of fun.
- 9:18It always is. Hope the weather holds out. My good friends in the
- 9:20world of meteorology say that there could be some rain this weekend. But you
- 9:22know what, I'm sure you folks have gone through rain to do this.
- 9:26You've gone through probably cold temperatures, and you've gone through hot temperatures as well.
- 9:30You'll get through it. Ladies. I appreciate you being here. We'll
- 9:31see you this weekend. Thanks a lot, all right, thank you,
- 9:35all right, Patty Ashworth and Galing Terry from the Putnam County homecoming to get
- 9:39It's Saturday and Sunday and everything going on in will It really is a big
- 9:43deal. I had an opportunity a few years ago to have America's Got Talent
- 9:48winner Landaal Eugene Murphy Junior there. Landaal actually judged their talent competition. He
- 9:54and Kenny Bass and a couple of other people judge a talent competition. And
- 9:58I got a chance to drive a land in the parade over there several years
- 10:03ago. So it's a big news in Winfield. If you get an opportunity
- 10:05to stop by speaking of Windfield. Five eighty Live is brought to you in

- 14:37Capitol. Good morning, sir, how are you? Good morning, day.
- 14:39It's good to be with you. Thank you picked a special day to
- 14:41be here. Man. It's kind of a beehive of activity going on with
- 14:45our with our with our thing we're doing upstairs there with the kids, w
- 14:48Medicine, Children's Cares for Kids, Radio thon. So well, thanks for
- 14:52having me on it, and it is and thank you for the work that
- 14:54you're doing for the for the children and West Virginia. And we're doing it
- 14:58not only as we said at this station, but all of our stations throughout
- 15:01the state. We're all taking a part of this. First of all,
- 15:03I want to start the West Virginia poll came out Friday which showed you in
- 15:07the lead at least early on in the Republican nomination for governor. Now,
- 15:11so tweaking as I talked about, it had to be done, but still
- 15:13doesn't change the fact that that and that was all covered with Rex repass On
- 15:18Hoppy yesterday. But the poll shows that you are in the lead over Attorney
- 15:22General Patrick Morrissey. I'll dealer Chris Miller's Secretary of State Mic Warner again very
- 15:24early on. But what are you doing right so far? Well, it
- 15:28is early on, and you know We're going to see a lot of polls,
- 15:30and obviously we know that the only poll that really matters is when West
- 15:33Virginians go to the polls on election day and make the decision. But you
- 15:39know, I think what we're seeing is a reflection of our room for growth.
- 15:43We're seeing great momentum. All of this is very encouraging, and I
- 15:46think, you know, when you look at it, it's a result of
- 15:50the work that we've been doing. We've been on the road. I think
- 15:54we've driven more than thirty five thousand miles in this state so far, and
- 15:58we're just getting started talking to parents, and we're talking to teachers, and
- 16:03we're talking to our church leaders and community leaders and our law enforcement and all
- 16:08of these folks are excited again about West Virginia and we're starting to win.
- 16:15We know that West Virginia, for the first time in a long long time,
- 16:18is on the right track. And we've seen that reflected in some of
- 16:23the news coverage that obviously you all have had here. But I can tell
- 16:27you that has been reflected when we've been on the road listening. That's what
- 16:32we're hearing from West Virginians. And as someone who played a lot of sports
- 16:34growing up. Our coach has always said, you can never win unless you
- 16:38believe you can win, and West Virginians are starting to believe we can win
- 16:42again. I want to talk about that message that's out there and again you
- 16:48kind of touch them a little bit. Again, we're talking about Ella get
- 16:49more capital a Republican Canada for governor. So when you're going out to a
- 16:52town hall, or you're going to meeting, as you said, with a
- 16:55church group, or you're meeting with with whomever that you happen to be meeting
- 16:57with enthusiasts, are you hearing that enthusiasm from West Virginia a lot? Because
- 17:03I hear both. I mean I have a lot of people on the show
- 17:06that say, yes, yes, they're hearing it. But then some people
- 17:08maybe they're not seeing it where they I mean here in the Kanawa Valley.
- 17:12I live in Putnam County. We're exploding in Putnam County right now, and
- 17:15the Eastern Panhandle's doing real well the Morgantown area, but an area like let's
- 17:18say a McDowell County, uh, maybe not seeing it as much or a
- 17:22Clay County. I'm just using those an example. What are those people telling
- 17:26you, I think we're hearing generally speaking, we're hearing encouraging feedback when we
- 17:32when we've been all throughout West Virginia, and clearly we're seeing pockets that are
- 17:37that are experiencing more growth. We've seen that for a few years, of
- 17:42course in the eastern Panhandle. We're starting to see it with the developments and
- 17:48economic development announcements that we've seen of course in Jackson County and in Mason County
- 17:52as of late, and those things those have tentacles, and that the tentacles
- 17:57from those announcements are POI we have the thing that I was mentioning last week
- 18:04when we were at our first sort of debate. I mentioned that, you
- 18:10know, my grandfather used to write me letters, and there's one that vividly
- 18:12sticks with me, and in that he had suggested that in his life he
- 18:18had found that successful people were good listeners, and that I adopt that creed.
- 18:22Now, as I said then, I'm not sure if he was sending
- 18:25us a not so subtle hint at the time or just giving us life advice.
- 18:29But that's something that's stuck with me. So when we go to any
- 18:33community in West Virginia, the first thing that we do is listen. Too
- 18:37often folks go into the room and just start talking. But the number one
- 18:41thing that we are focused on is listening. Listening to the people of West
- 18:45Virginia, listening to how they're feeling, listening to what their concerns are.
- 18:48I can tell you, as a parent of two young children, that a
- 18:52lot of what we're hearing is a result of the you know, the Biden
- 18:56Administration's crazy economic policies that are causing prices to soar on West Virginians. So
- 19:03you know, when West Virginians asked us to deliver historic tax relief this past
- 19:07year, I was proud to lead and we got that done. But we
- 19:11need to find more ways to put more money in folks pockets so they can
- 19:15get up and get started. I want to talk about your time in the
- 19:18legislature. What did you accomplish. What are some of the things that you
- 19:22were particularly proud of that you as the legislature that you were able to work
- 19:26with others or yourself to be able to accomplish. That you think will transition
- 19:30as you move from that building into another one. If you're elected governor and
- 19:33you move into the governor's mansion. Anybody that knows me or that has worked
- 19:37with me will tell you that I will that I have an open door policy.
- 19:41I always listened, as I mentioned before, and I think that's critical
- 19:45and delivering a policy that has positive results. I mean, and I've always
- 19:52executed and delivered as Judiciary chairman. You know this, Dave. There is
- 19:56no committee that sees more conservative principal policy than that committee. And I've been
- 20:04proud to lead that committee and deliver and craft the most conservative agenda in the
- 20:10history of the state of West Virginia. And on our travels across the state
- 20:12and the people that we're talking to in West Virginia, they appreciate the work
- 20:18that we've done in banning sanctuary cities. They appreciate the work that we have
- 20:22done to protect the life of the unborn. They appreciate what we have gotten
- 20:26done to protect Second Amendment rights, and of course they appreciate the economic pro
- 20:30growth policies that took us when I came into the legislature from a four hundred
- 20:34and fifty or so million dollars deficit to last year and an almost a two
- 20:41billion dollars surplus. So the tides are changing in West Virginia, and that's
- 20:45because of what we have gotten done, and we've been talking about our get
- 20:48it done conservative message and it's really resonating with the people of West Virginia.
- 20:53You're talking to more Capital, who is a delegate and wants to be the
- 20:57next governor of the state of West Virginia. Our phone calls to five eighty
- 21:00liveer's service of Bigley Piggley Wiggly and our texting services provided by Truth Pharmacy,
- 21:04your hometown Family Pharmacy. Attorney General Patrick Morrisey has said he is the only
- 21:11true conservative that's in the field, certainly saying he's the only one with a
- 21:14proven track record in the field as it pertains to his accomplishments. Now,
- 21:18when I had Secretary of State Mike Corner on the show, I asked him
- 21:21his thoughts on that. Asked Chris Miller when he was on the show last
- 21:23week. Your thoughts when you hear that statement. As we continue to say
- 21:27we are the get it done conservative in this race. If you look at
- 21:33my record in accomplishments and executing and delivering on conservative issues, it is second
- 21:40to none. Again, I'll reiterate, as you know and many of your
- 21:44listeners know, as Chairman of judic of the Judiciary Committee, I am charged
- 21:48with crafting the most conservative policies and ensuring not only that they're crafted and put
- 21:53through our committee, but then I stand and defend them on the floor and
- 21:59ensure that they become law in the state of West Virginia. Everybody that we
- 22:03are talking to in the state of West Virginia recognizes that they recognize the positive
- 22:07steps and the momentum that we have put in place in the legislature, and
- 22:11I'm proud to have gotten that done and gotten it done in a very conservative
- 22:15way. Last week, the Chamber of Commerce said that there are a business
- 22:18summit at the Greenbrier. Know, you were part of that. The other
- 22:22other folks that want to be governor on the Republican side, we're all part
- 22:25of that forum. I got a chance to watch it after the fact.
- 22:27I wasn't there, but I watched it after the fact, and it really
- 22:30wasn't a debate more. It was more of a you know, just this
- 22:33is what you hope to do. And I have thought everything turned out to
- 22:36pretty well. Did you hear anything in there or sense anything there that's going
- 22:41to kind of do you think will push you ahead of the others. I
- 22:44think it's great to be able to get together and talk about the vision that
- 22:48I have for West Virginia. This is a movement that again has room to
- 22:53grow. We continue to accelerate and build momentum as we talk about this,
- 22:59any chance that we have to set forth our accomplishments and what we've done as
- 23:04they get it done conservative in this race and then talk about a vision again,
- 23:11what is what is going on in West Virginia right now is a really
- 23:14special time And what all of the candidates on that stage said last week is
- 23:18that West Virginia has momentum and West Virginia has momentum because of the work that
- 23:22Governor Justice and the legislature have done. So when we think about why we
- 23:27are where we are, much of that has to do with what I have
- 23:32gotten done in the legislature and what we have gotten done us as a group
- 23:37down in Charleston. And that is that is spread throughout, that is spread
- 23:41throughout the state. And that that event there was I said it was more
- 23:45of a foreign But there will be debates as we get again. We're you
- 23:48know, we're just we just now passed Labor Day campaigns start earlier and earlier
- 23:52every year, every time, it seems, but there will be some actual
- 23:56debates, classic debates held either on television, radio, or in specific auditoriums
- 24:02or whatever. You're looking forward to those, absolutely, we look forward to
- 24:04every opportunity that we have again to talk to as many people as we can
- 24:08talk to. Our reference again are thirty five thousand miles on the road and
- 24:12we're just getting started. We're going to listen to as many West Virginians as
- 24:17we can, as many parents, as many community leaders, church leaders,
- 24:21law enforcement. We want to hear what is going on in the ground.
- 24:25And I think what's particularly important and why I really stress how much we are
- 24:30getting out there is because this is about, you know, hard work,
- 24:34and I've always been a very gritty person and the best way to find the
- 24:40solutions to take West Virginia to the next level is to listen to the folks
- 24:45that are on the ground. And that's exactly what we're doing. We're going
- 24:48to each and every community and spending time listening to the issues that matter the
- 24:52most. As expected, on Monday, Huntington Mayor Steve Williams jumped to the
- 24:56race as of now being the only Democrat that's running for good or that could
- 25:02change your thoughts on on Steve Williams. He's a nice guy. I think
- 25:07anytime you know, you welcome people to the field. Obviously I have.
- 25:10There's there's a stark contrast with the mayor and I and our politics, you
- 25:15know, and we're looking forward to getting to that in the general when we
- 25:18win this primary. I was gonna say, but you're gonna get through the
- 25:21primary first, and it's gonna be a tough race. And it has been
- 25:26so far pretty cordial. I think between the between the campus, because you
- 25:30guys all know each other and you're all friends. I guess to a certain
- 25:33extent, are you worried that it may not stay as cordial as we move
- 25:36through the campaign. Every day we wake up, we're looking forward, and
- 25:40I think that's an important thing. And when we started this campaign, I
- 25:44said, we're gonna go in every single day looking forward because that's what the
- 25:48people of West Virginia want. They want to look forward. They want to
- 25:51be excited about taking West Virginia to the next level. We're on the right
- 25:55track, we're moving in the right direction. We're excited again. We're gonna
- 25:59talk about that and we're gonna tell our story. For too long in West
- 26:03Virginia, we've let others dictate sort of what our narrative is. And I'm
- 26:07excited to be able to be the face of that, a new generation of
- 26:11that, and it's an exciting time in West Virginia. I'll get more capital,
- 26:15I'll give you, I'll give you the final thirty here, and I'll
- 26:18have you on plenty of time as well as all the other candidates before before
- 26:21we get to the primary next May. But why should people consider casting their
- 26:26vote for you as opposed to let's say, the other Republicans in the race.
- 26:29Thank you again for having me on, Dave. You know, to
- 26:32take West Virginia to the next level, we have to make sure that we
- 26:34have safer communities, we have to have world class education, we have to
- 26:38continue our pro growth economic policies, and we have to ensure that we unlock
- 26:44West Virginia's energy assets so that West Virginia can lead this country's return to energy
- 26:49independence. And as your governor, we will get that done together. And
- 26:53when we do, opportunity will follow. Our people will see bigger pay checks
- 27:00and West Virginia will become a twenty first century hub for opportunity. You can

- 30:55you know in the poll it had more capital in the lead and Patrick Morrisey
- 31:00and I think what was twenty three, and it turns out he was actually
- 31:03a little higher at twenty seven. So I read the story. I want
- 31:07to have a little little comment on that myself, coming up a little bit
- 31:10later on. David Farrell is with us right now, Delegate Dada Fair,
- 31:12how are you man, Good morning and doing good. Thank you for being
- 31:17here. These high school football scores from this Friday night, Delegate right,
- 31:21I think Hurricane just scored another touchdown while we were setting here. And I
- 31:25say that jokingly, but oh my gosh, I mean I'm watching I'm watching
- 31:29the scores on on the WVU, on the on the Metro News ticker,
- 31:33and I'm like, how is this? How is this possible? These scores?
- 31:37Is the transfer rule that was passed by the legislature, is is it
- 31:42responsible for what we the massacres we saw this Friday night. Well, it's
- 31:45not solely responsible, but it's compounding the issue. And we warned, we
- 31:52warned our fellow delegates back in March when this bill came came across the floor
- 31:59and we're ready vote on we debated. Remember this bill was debated on for
- 32:01over an hour on the House for a pretty vigorous debate. Uh at a
- 32:06point we were making it. At that point though it was all hypothetical.
- 32:08Now it's reality and we're seeing it, you know, show up with these
- 32:13lopsided scores and h and even more so, I mean, we see the
- 32:17data. You know, this is not just about football. Remember, this
- 32:20is going on in other sports, and we're going to see this happening more
- 32:22and more as this moves forward, especially as we get into winter sports and
- 32:25basketball. What was the reason behind it? I mean, I know you
- 32:30weren't somebody that supported it, but I mean, obviously there were those that
- 32:32did it, and it passed without the governor signature. By the way,
- 32:35he didn't sign it. But what was the whole idea behind it? As
- 32:38best you understand it, Danta, Okay, my understanding and what was told
- 32:43to me is that you know, it was a particular senator and I'm not
- 32:45naming names. There was particular senator and this came out of the Senate and
- 32:49it's actually came out the last two or three years, and it's been beat
- 32:51down in the House last two or three years, and it was one of
- 32:52its way to being tabled and shelved again this year on the last day session.
- 32:59This Senator Shoe warned the basically amended this bill into another popular Hope Scholarship
- 33:05sports eligibility bill, which he was pretty confident. You know that the delegates
- 33:10would not defeat the entire bill just to defeat his amendment. And because it
- 33:16was sending the waning hours or the last day, it was either or choice
- 33:21here for the House of Delegates when it came over. You either had to
- 33:22defeat the whole bill because there was no way we could strip it out.
- 33:25Because they don't, one had to go back to the Senate. Then the
- 33:28whole bill dies. And I think most delegates knew that. So that was
- 33:30the conundrum that most of my fellow delegates were in that day, and says
- 33:35some of them went ahead and basically held their nose and hit the green button
- 33:37and put this through. And I don't think into their credit. I don't
- 33:42think anybody I said at that point it was hypothetical. I'm not sure anybody
- 33:45realized just how bad this was going to be. But here we are,
- 33:49and here's somebody in your background. I mentioned that you're a delegate, but
- 33:51but you're also a longtime educator too, and so had a coach, and
- 33:54so so you got a little bit more skin in the game, a little
- 33:57bit more experience, and what maybe some of your fellow legislators happened right right,
- 34:00I've you know, I've been at this for across three decades and uh,
- 34:04probably longer than I'd like to admit that I am. But I've been
- 34:07around it, and uh, you see, you know this, and and
- 34:10I've seen the best of things happen and people bring out in sports, and
- 34:15given the right environment circumstance, you can see the worst brought out in people.
- 34:20And that's what we're seeing right now. I think, you know,
- 34:22we set up an environment whereby we're bringing out the worst in people in teams.
- 34:28So explain exactly what the rule was before as far as because transfers have
- 34:34always gone on in West Virginia and across the country, I mean people,
- 34:37and there's always been a certain amount of quote unquote recruiting that's gone on.
- 34:42I mean, I'm not gonna I'm I'm Promogan County. We kind of invented
- 34:45it, you know, down there. So but this is a totally different
- 34:49animal. Delegate, Explain what is happening. Explain what the rule was before
- 34:53and what it is now. Well, it's a perfect storm I think situation
- 34:57we're in right now because before you know, as you say, there was
- 35:00there are always people trying to manipulate the uh the rules and eligibility and uh
- 35:06you know, the territories and schools that they went in, and they were
- 35:07moving around and changing addresses and whatever it be to try to you know,
- 35:12uh, get where they think they could have an advantage where a team or
- 35:15school could have an advantage. But uh, it was hard to do even
- 35:19at that. So what we've done now though, it is just said,
- 35:21hey, it's legal. It's just open the floodgates and anybody can go where
- 35:24they want to go, when they want to go, and and that has
- 35:29encouraged it. And then on top of that, you've got this pressure from
- 35:31on top from the college level with the nil you gotta you gotta think that
- 35:37when a sophomore a junior in high school can look at and say, hey,
- 35:40you know, if I can put up some gaudy numbers on Friday night
- 35:45and do it at a at a school that's in a media market where it's
- 35:49going to get attention, Yeah, if I can, if I can put
- 35:51up six touchdowns for example, you know who knows if Ohio State didn't knocking
- 35:54on my door next week saying, hey, look, you know if you
- 35:57go ahead and commit here in verbal here, you know, you look at
- 35:59a million dollars in I L deal coming out of high school. That's hard
- 36:02to ignore. And you can't that's the last week on another interview. You
- 36:07can't blame the kids. You can't blame the parents in this case for doing
- 36:10what they think is in the best interest to their you know, their child
- 36:14or their their family. So well, you and I talked the last time
- 36:17you were on the show about that about it. You know, a kid
- 36:20maybe that doesn't have the best grades in the world, and this is the
- 36:22only chance to hear she's going to get to go to college, is on
- 36:25an athletic scholarship, and and and so that's they want to excel. Parents
- 36:30naturally want their pair, their their kids to do better than they did and
- 36:34to be able to compete at the next level or to excel in whatever they
- 36:37did. And and I look at a school, and I'm not picking on
- 36:40Saint Alban's High School, but I have some experience with Saint Alban's High School
- 36:44because in another company I worked with, we carry their ball games, and
- 36:45you know Saint Alban's has not had a win. This is no disrespect towards
- 36:50the school at all or the coaches. They haven't had a winning culture in
- 36:52football in years at Saint Alban's High School. And I'm just using that as
- 36:57an example. If you've got a young baseball well, I was gonna say,
- 37:00I said football, because you know they've had some success in some other
- 37:02sports too, but I'm talking about just football. They haven't had a whole
- 37:06lot of them and a winning culture there. And so I mean, if
- 37:08you're a kid and you've got any kind of ability, do you and you
- 37:12could fit? There's other schools across the state. You know, get not
- 37:15picking on Saint Albits, but if you're a kid and you've got some kind
- 37:16of ability, do you want to I hate to use the term waste your
- 37:22time, but the language in a two and eight season? Or do you
- 37:24want to go somewhere where you can be competitive and get eyes on you from
- 37:28a WVU Marshall whatever. And this is an argument. It's made by a
- 37:31lot of people with some validity, but I would counter with that, as
- 37:35I said, I've been around this business, and I've been coaching. I've
- 37:37been in sports media, so covering the ends of it, working with colleges
- 37:42and universities as well. And if you're good, if you've got the talents
- 37:45and your bfs, bigger, faster, stronger, they're going to find you.
- 37:50Go back to Kurt Warner, didn't even have the internet any Keeme out
- 37:52of the southern coal fields that exis high school but it doesn't even exist anymore,
- 37:58and it goes onto Penn State and the field. If you're good,
- 38:00they're going to find you. You do not need to be crossing multiple school
- 38:05districts to go somewhere to think that, you know. To me, it's
- 38:08it's a fool's goal. I mean, you're after something in uh, you
- 38:13know. But it's easy to understand how parents can get caught up in a
- 38:15look at the travel sports, the club sports environment. It's all about individuals.
- 38:22It's not about schools. It's not about team and us. It's about
- 38:25me and myself. It seems if we create an environment in the scholastic environment,
- 38:30which was never that. It was about the school, which about the
- 38:34community. Now we've entered in a thing, well, it's about you know,
- 38:37how far can I go? Well? And again, I've always said,
- 38:42uh, Dana, that the school is the centerpiece of a of a
- 38:45community, especially when you get into smaller areas. I mean, you know,
- 38:51it's areas that only have one or two schools, you know, in
- 38:53the county, or maybe sometimes they just have a county high school. And
- 38:57and I always take it from this perspective. You know, you take a
- 39:00that has done all the right things in a Buddy League system or Little League
- 39:04baseball or whatever the case is, and they work their way up in the
- 39:06if you you practice. I remember as a kid going and watching high school
- 39:09sports and thinking, you know, in the coaches saying no, if you
- 39:13work hard, you can put on that helmet or you can put on that
- 39:15basketball jersey something. Well they didn't say that to me because I sucked as
- 39:17an athlete, but I mean if I were a good athlete, they would
- 39:20have. And then you work your way up and okay, now it's my
- 39:23junior, my senior year at fill in blank High School, and I'm going
- 39:28to have the opportunity. But oh no, here comes a kid transferring in
- 39:30from you know, two counties away. There is collateral damage when somebody makes
- 39:36a transfer. Absolutely, both as when I say, there's no winners here.
- 39:38Even the schools that appear to be winning, they're losing because you have
- 39:43these situations happening within the community and that creates division and resentments and and trust
- 39:50me, I've gotten calls of her from parents from these schools where it said,
- 39:53hey, you know, my child is now having a platoon or share
- 39:55time and where they would have been their opportunity. And so you know,
- 39:59we're creating an environment of division and resentment and animosity amongst communities, within communities.
- 40:05That's not who we are as West Virginia. You know, we pull
- 40:07together, we come together in crisis. This is not good. And when
- 40:12you go as I did Saturday morning on social media, because that's what that's
- 40:15where we live now, you know, you have to go on the X
- 40:19or on Facebook or Instagram or whatever, and you look at the comments.
- 40:22I mean, and people a lot of times that don't have a kid at
- 40:25the school, or they don't do they weren't actually at the game themselves,
- 40:29and they just see a score and then it becomes this big argument, which
- 40:34is what most of Saturday into the weekend Sunday was was people saying, well,
- 40:38how in the world it's bad sportsmanship for you to score eighty six points
- 40:43in a high school football game. But then the other side, the other
- 40:45side comes up, so well, we pulled our starters and we had ninth
- 40:47graders and you know, playing against here. So you get a kid that
- 40:52maybe didn't get to play a lot and he's got the ball on the two
- 40:53yard line, do you expect him to kneel and not try to score?
- 40:57I mean, I say, there are no winners here because even the winners
- 41:00are put in a bad situation. And exactly exactly, and you know even
- 41:04more so, don't get in We're getting into the mental psyche. Those kids
- 41:07that got beat ninety five to six or whatever on Friday night, I have
- 41:09to get up and go to school on Monday morning and walk the hallways.
- 41:14I've even had reports of situations for those kids. Uh, there's been I'm
- 41:19going to say this lightly, but mental distress amongst those kids. That we've
- 41:22got some schools that may not finish the season. Kids just say hey,
- 41:27you know, at what point do you just give it up? And as
- 41:30we got that, and then on top of that, you talked about the
- 41:31rural schools, you've got kids jumping in vehicles, and having to drive themselves
- 41:36across county lines to go to a school where that uh, because you used
- 41:39to actually have to live there, you actually had to you had to move
- 41:43to a community. And at what point does that kid hit an icy road
- 41:46or there's you know, there's a head on collision or something, and now
- 41:50we've got loss of life. Yeah, so how do we fix them?
- 41:52What do you plan to do? I mean, if this is on you,
- 41:55it's not because you were one of the vocal upponents beginning. I am
- 42:00legislature. You gonna and it was my job to try to convince, you
- 42:01know, my fellow delegates to knock this down. I mean to the credit,
- 42:06you know, from a political standpoint, the Senate did what it did,
- 42:09and kudos to this particular Senate for making the maneuvers that he did.
- 42:15But I don't even think he realized the implications of what was you know,
- 42:20going to come down to Pike. So what are we going to see in
- 42:22the next session? So well, yeah, absolutely, I think the move
- 42:24is on. I've talked to the Speaker last night, I've talked to the
- 42:27governor. I think there's broad sentiment and I'll be talking my fellow delegates we're
- 42:31coming into interims this coming weekend. We can't do anything then. But my
- 42:37mission, my goal was to try to get a bill together that we could
- 42:39talk to the governor to put on a call during interims as a special session
- 42:45bill when costs taxpayers anything. We're already there, and pipe this through real
- 42:50quick and get it on his desk and get it through reversed sooner than later,
- 42:52because if we wait and go through winter sports and in spring old scholastic
- 42:57gear, it's going to be a lot of bloodletting. And uh, now
- 43:00we've got a problem that the House Chamber is torn up, you know for
- 43:06renovations. We can't meet over there for at least to talk to the Speaker
- 43:09yesterday, and it's going to be into i know, renovations at least till
- 43:15November. So I don't know that we may get into January before we can
- 43:20even deal with this. Okay, So as you know, because you are
- 43:23a delegate, by the way, are you running for re election? Yes,
- 43:27yes, it will okay, Okay, So the House members are up
- 43:30next year, do you worry that many of them don't want to get involved
- 43:34in this because you know there's an unwritten rule Dana. As you know that
- 43:37you don't really tackle anything big in an election year, and this does have
- 43:42controversy. Yeah, I mean there are people that that that loved this what
- 43:46has been pastor there their parents, and there are others that that love this
- 43:50transfer rule. Well, they're a very small minority. I'm gonna tell you
- 43:52it's about at least one of my timelines, it's about ninety five to five.
- 43:55That's because you have better friends than I. And and I'll say this,
- 44:00you know, as a as representatives, you know, we're we are
- 44:04elected to lead represent our constituents. And if you look at it, most
- 44:07every delegate in that House of Duggets or one hundred of us represent a school
- 44:10like I represent system Ville High School and part of South Charleston. I'm there,
- 44:15you know, to take care of those schools. And and as you
- 44:19just said it earlier, those schools or the cornerstones, there's centerpiece of that
- 44:22community. They are microconstums. They reflect who those communities are and vice versa.
- 44:28And people take it serious. And that's why, you know, you
- 44:30want to why are people so up in arms about this situation more so than
- 44:34a DHHR or a jobs bill or anything else out there because this hits home.
- 44:39This is about who we are as a people, and we've got a
- 44:44problem. And I and I would you know, warm a costume a fellow
- 44:46representatives that you know, you get on board where it's going to be problems
- 44:51because this is a political albatross. It is indeed not like Dana Ferrell.
- 44:54It's always a pleasure to have you on the show man. We'll talk again
- 44:58soon. All right, Thank you, possibly the nicest down the legislature.
- 45:00You're You're way too nice to be there, you know that, right.
- 45:02I don't know about that. I get kicked around of it. It's okay.
- 45:06Somebody has to keep the dog. That's all right. What do you
- 45:07have a wife for that? Right? They can kick her out. All
- 45:10right, we gotta go. We'll take a break, a delegate. I

- 47:52mistake in the West Virginia polling for the Republican nomination for governor. That poll
- 47:57released on Friday. Rex Repass did the poll for Research America. The original
- 48:00polling data had twenty three percent of responded saying that they were supporting Attorney General
- 48:05Patrick Morrissey for governor. In reality, that number was closer to twenty seven
- 48:09percent for Morrissey. The mistake doesn't change, though, Who's in the leads.
- 48:13Delia Moore Capitau, who you heard from earlier. He's at thirty two
- 48:16percent. Chris Miller came in at nine percent, and Secretary of State Mic
- 48:20Warner at seven percent, but twenty six are still undecided. Keep that in
- 48:23mind. So the rankings are now Capita followed by Morrissey, then undecided,
- 48:29and then Miller and Warner in that order. To explain how the mistake happened,
- 48:34go back and listen to Hoppy yesterday. Also, Brad has a story
- 48:37posted about at wv metronews dot com. Patrick Morrissey took it as an opportunity
- 48:40for the second time in a week, the slam Metro News. And again,
- 48:44as I said earlier in the show, for those who say I had
- 48:47text people saying, well, he was really slamming. He was slamming the
- 48:50polling and not Metro News. Well he explained that yesterday and he's definitely now
- 48:54slamming the company. Rita's statements part of brad storywv metronews dot com. Wonder
- 49:00if I wonder if Morrissey would have called it fake news had the polling showed
- 49:02he was out in front. I think you know the answer to that,
- 49:07only fake news If you don't like what's being reported, and but you have
- 49:09to also remember polling is just a moment in time. If you go back
- 49:15to around twenty fifteen, around this time, polls for the twenty sixteen president
- 49:20presidential election showed that Hillary Clinton and Jeff Bush were in the league. So
- 49:24thanks change over time. This is not the be all end all. It's
- 49:28uh just kind of where we are. Got a lot of texts to get
- 49:30to. Tex says we need to shut down this soup and transfer rule in
- 49:32West Virginia and then we need to follow up by creating a movement to start
- 49:36the ball on shutting down the college sports transfer portal. It is bad for
- 49:40everyone, tex says Dave Senator Weld sentor Ryan Weld's transfer bill has harmed small
- 49:46town schools that are hemorrhageine students every year. Uh, Texas, why continue
- 49:54to let Republicans more capital? Included a lie about the West Virginia budgets.
- 49:59Surplus one point to two five billion came directly from the federal government. Arrests
- 50:02came from increased cold and gas servants because of increased prices and record production levels
- 50:07under President Biden. These facts make you cry or deny mega but they remain
- 50:10facts. Just ask West Virginia Revenue Secretary Dave Hardy, Texas. Once the
- 50:15general public realizes Ryan Weld is responsible for the transfer a rule, his chances
- 50:20are gone of obtaining a statewide office as a texture. Texture says, how
- 50:27come no one in the legislature is listening to the seven thousand children in foster
- 50:30care in the state. It's one thing to protect the unborn. It is
- 50:34another, actually, to care for children when they grow up. Walk the
- 50:37walk, just talk the talk, Texas. Imagine if we talked to much
- 50:42about educating our kids as we do. Football texts says the high school transfer
- 50:52rule, No surprise there. The Republican supermajority messed up high school sports competition.
- 50:58Everything they touched turns to poop. Can you say poop on the air?
- 51:01I think I just did. Republican policy says the texture is one that
- 51:05chooses tens of millions of dollars of tax revenue from a pipeline, completely rejects
- 51:08the hundreds of millions of dollars tax revenue plus to downstream economic effects of legal
- 51:13cannabis, and that Republican social policies We'll keep West Virginia in the early twentieth
- 51:16century. Republicans like to swim upstream, Texture, says Patrick, isn't the
- 51:22only one attacking Metro News over the pole. Mike Warner send out an email
- 51:25about its slamming the poll as well. I did not know that. I
- 51:29didn't get the email. Did not get the email. All right, we
- 51:32gotta go remember our WWU Medicine Children's Cares for Kids. Radiothon continues texts call
