- 0:01We are born into a family, a culture, a society, a given
- 0:07economic and political system, an educational process and a
- 0:12vast number of social habits, customs and predilections which
- 0:17create for us a framework within which we are expected to take up
- 0:21our destined place in society and carry it forward.
- 0:26Meeting the expectations of the society within which we are born
- 0:30and responding to the pressures from family, friends, peers and
- 0:36Co workers to conform with the norms of our social environment,
- 0:41we can easily see that such a situation seems to create for us
- 0:45a fixed destiny that we either blessed or doomed to follow.
- 0:52We tend to put our predicament in celestial terms where we
- 0:56consider the astrological framework that somehow maps our
- 0:59destiny. For us, and for most people,
- 1:03these conditions apply and they follow their destiny from birth
- 1:08to death, even if, as we see in many cases, quite unhappily and
- 1:15dissatisfied with the direction and outcome of their living
- 1:18circumstances. We can trace the arc of life for
- 1:22most people as having a predetermined trajectory,
- 1:25momentum and endpoint. And yet we see people who seem
- 1:31not to be bound by such a destiny, who for one reason or
- 1:35another, find themselves ready to abandon or leave behind the
- 1:40life so carefully set before them and try to achieve
- 1:45something different. These people tread the road less
- 1:48taken, so to speak, whether it be an art, science, invention,
- 1:54exploration or in taking up of a spiritual life.
- 2:00To the extent that they focus on achievement in the external
- 2:04world, they are still bound by many of the habits, customs and
- 2:08expectations of the society around them.
- 2:12Those few, however, who take up the inner quest, the spiritual
- 2:16quest, soon learn to extricate themselves progressively more
- 2:22and more from the web of social customs, mores and expectations.
- 2:28As they begin to actively evolve and change internally, they link
- 2:33themselves to the Divine and through aspiration, prayer,
- 2:39meditation, contemplation, concentration, or through
- 2:44selfless action dedicated to the Supreme, they forge the links
- 2:50that helped them become receptive and responsive to the
- 2:54divine evolutionary purpose and the forces active to bring that
- 2:58about. This link of the aspiration and
- 3:03the corresponding responsive energy can eventually bring
- 3:07about, over time and against all obstacles, a divine fulfillment,
- 3:14Sri Orobindo observes. Quote Destiny in the rigid sense
- 3:19applies only to the outer being so long as it lives in the
- 3:23ignorance. What we call destiny is only in
- 3:26fact the result of the present condition of the being and the
- 3:30nature and energies it has accumulated in the past, acting
- 3:35on each other and determining the present attempts and their
- 3:39future results. But as soon as one enters the
- 3:43path of spiritual life, this old predetermined destiny begins to
- 3:48recede. There comes in a new factor the
- 3:52divine grace, the help of a higher divine force other than
- 3:57the force of karma, which can lift the sodic beyond the
- 4:01present possibilities of his nature.
- 4:04One spiritual destiny is then the divine election which
- 4:07ensures the future. The only doubt is about the
- 4:11vicissitudes of the path and the time to be taken by the passage.
