- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, home of the
- 0:05Speaker 1: modern white tail hunter and now your host, Mark Kenyon.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm your host,
- 0:15Speaker 1: Mark Kenyan, and today on the show, we are joined
- 0:17Speaker 1: by Tyler Jones and Casey Smith of the Element to
- 0:21Speaker 1: discuss hunting in the South, making a trip from the
- 0:24Speaker 1: South to hunt in the Midwest, and how to kill
- 0:26Speaker 1: public land bucks. All right, welcome to the Wired to
- 0:41Speaker 1: Hunt podcast, brought to you by First Light, and today
- 0:45Speaker 1: we've got a much needed topic of discussion, something we
- 0:50Speaker 1: don't talk about enough. I'm sorry to those of you
- 0:52Speaker 1: who have been asking for this and that I've been
- 0:55Speaker 1: not doing it as much as I know you want.
- 0:57Speaker 1: But we are talking about hunting in the South. We're
- 0:59Speaker 1: talking about hunting and Texas. We're talking about the differences
- 1:03Speaker 1: between hunting and the South and heading north and going
- 1:05Speaker 1: to places like the Midwest and elsewhere. And joining me
- 1:08Speaker 1: to do that is Casey Smith and Tyler Jones. They
- 1:11Speaker 1: run the Element podcast the Element YouTube channel. They are
- 1:16Speaker 1: a couple die hard public land bow hunters and they're
- 1:19Speaker 1: getting it done. They're traveling across the country killing great bucks,
- 1:23Speaker 1: doing it the d I y Any remand's kind of
- 1:27Speaker 1: way that any of you could possibly replicate. So they're
- 1:31Speaker 1: the type of people I really loved to chat with,
- 1:33Speaker 1: and they've got a great perspective, especially because they're hunting
- 1:36Speaker 1: a place that that I haven't hunting before, Texas, but
- 1:39Speaker 1: they're having success in places that I have as well.
- 1:42Speaker 1: So I thought this would be really interesting to see
- 1:45Speaker 1: what's different, what's the same, what can be applied to
- 1:49Speaker 1: either or I think there's a little bit of something
- 1:51Speaker 1: for everyone here today. So I don't want to beat
- 1:54Speaker 1: around the bush too much. I will just give you
- 1:56Speaker 1: a couple heads ups, a couple of reminders before we
- 2:00Speaker 1: get into it. Hunting season is about to start. My
- 2:03Speaker 1: season kicks off here in just a matter of days, almost,
- 2:07Speaker 1: which is insane. If you want to stay up to
- 2:09Speaker 1: date with what's going on with my season, or Tony
- 2:12Speaker 1: Peterson's or anyone else, make sure you're following Wired Hunt
- 2:16Speaker 1: on social media, in particular on Instagram. You'll get to
- 2:20Speaker 1: see the latest stories from my hunt's updates on what's happening.
- 2:24Speaker 1: And then finally, make sure you're going over to the
- 2:26Speaker 1: Wired Hunt website and signing up for a newsletter to
- 2:29Speaker 1: get the weekly kind of note from me to get
- 2:32Speaker 1: all the latest content share with you. If you go

- 2:49Speaker 1: your inbox every week. So, without any further ado, I
- 2:54Speaker 1: think you're gonna enjoy this chat. I definitely did. Let's
- 2:58Speaker 1: get into it with Casey Smith and Tyler Jones. All
- 3:02Speaker 1: right here with me on the line, I've got Tyler
- 3:05Speaker 1: Jones and Casey Smith. Welcome to the show, guys, man,
- 3:09Speaker 1: glad to be here. Thanks for having us. Yeah, I
- 3:11Speaker 1: appreciate you making the time for it. I know you
- 3:15Speaker 1: got a busy schedule Aheady. I'm sure you're just like
- 3:17Speaker 1: me right now, which is running around like a chicken
- 3:19Speaker 1: with my head cut off, trying to finalize last minute
- 3:22Speaker 1: projects and get stuff packed and start thinking because I
- 3:26Speaker 1: take off for my first hunt of the year on Friday,
- 3:28Speaker 1: so seven days from now, six days from now, are
- 3:32Speaker 1: you guys in a similar boat? Yeah, dude, pretty much. Yeah,
- 3:35Speaker 1: I'll add to that that we um been redaling archery
- 3:40Speaker 1: equipment to last little bit and yeah, same boat, you know,
- 3:43Speaker 1: just trying to get stuff ready for the first hunt
- 3:45Speaker 1: of the year. Where you headed. Uh, well, I'll tell
- 3:47Speaker 1: you where I'm headed, but you're you got me terrified.
- 3:50Speaker 1: I have to ask when you say you're you're redialing
- 3:53Speaker 1: archery equipment seven days before the hunt. That sounds like
- 3:56Speaker 1: the kind of thing that's making my stomach turn. What happened? Well,
- 4:00Speaker 1: it's just a situation with um, you know, having new,
- 4:05Speaker 1: newer bows and trying to decide if we're going to
- 4:07Speaker 1: use stuff we're older that you're older and you're comfortable with,
- 4:10Speaker 1: or if the new stuff is gonna work out, and
- 4:12Speaker 1: YadA YadA. It's really not the best advice, tell you
- 4:15Speaker 1: the truth matically people. But basically coronavirus has uh you know,
- 4:19Speaker 1: kind of crushed all different shipping and production and manufacturing
- 4:23Speaker 1: and everything. So like we just got bows that we
- 4:25Speaker 1: thought we would get about May or June and so um,
- 4:30Speaker 1: and I guess just not knowing whether that was coming
- 4:33Speaker 1: or not. Um, I didn't never get my old bow
- 4:38Speaker 1: tuned up, which is a ten year old Matthews. So
- 4:40Speaker 1: it's like, you know, uh, it needed some work, uh,
- 4:43Speaker 1: and I just never got it done. And now we're
- 4:45Speaker 1: in this boat where we got bows in that. But
- 4:47Speaker 1: we're feeling good now. Yeah. It's the beautiful thing about
- 4:50Speaker 1: archer equipment nowadays is most of it's pretty good. So
- 4:53Speaker 1: you know, if you've had a history of shooting, then uh,
- 4:57Speaker 1: it's just about getting comfortable with the system. And you know,
- 4:59Speaker 1: that's what we I always get stressed when I know
- 5:03Speaker 1: that there's like a bow update coming or I've got
- 5:05Speaker 1: to change, and I always have this period of paranoia
- 5:10Speaker 1: or manic terror when I know they've got a new
- 5:15Speaker 1: I've got a new boat coming. And then the bow
- 5:16Speaker 1: arrives and I'm always like, oh, no, you know, is
- 5:19Speaker 1: this gonna fit? Is this gonna feel right? You know,
- 5:21Speaker 1: even if I shot it at the shop before, there's
- 5:23Speaker 1: always this feeling like, oh, it's never gonna be quite
- 5:25Speaker 1: as good as how used to I was with the
- 5:27Speaker 1: old bow. And then, like what you just said, every time,
- 5:30Speaker 1: like over the last I don't know ten years, when
- 5:32Speaker 1: I've been kind of getting newer bow is more often
- 5:35Speaker 1: than I used to. I always am shocked by how
- 5:37Speaker 1: quickly these things just they tune fast. You get used
- 5:41Speaker 1: to them fast. I think maybe it comes right down
- 5:43Speaker 1: to the fact that all of the you know, relatively
- 5:47Speaker 1: high end bows now are all they're all just darn gray.
- 5:49Speaker 1: You really can't go wrong. I don't think now they're
- 5:51Speaker 1: all I don't know, long ways from I mean, maybe
- 5:54Speaker 1: you're gonna tell a difference from your ten year old
- 5:56Speaker 1: bow to now, but but they're all pretty good. Yeah,
- 6:00Speaker 1: Casey was saying yesterday, he was like, man like as
- 6:03Speaker 1: a as a producer in this consumer market we have,
- 6:06Speaker 1: like you can't get away with anything that's not you know,
- 6:09Speaker 1: doesn't function like really well, because you know, consumers will
- 6:14Speaker 1: just squash you on the internet no time and you'll
- 6:16Speaker 1: be out of business exactly. You know, our dads grew
- 6:20Speaker 1: up when like the word of mouth was the only
- 6:23Speaker 1: way that anything happened, and everybody just shot with their
- 6:25Speaker 1: local bullshop provided, you know. But now it's like, if
- 6:28Speaker 1: you don't make a decent product, you know, everybody knows
- 6:31Speaker 1: the words are not quick, very very true, which is
- 6:34Speaker 1: a good thing for us. I guess the consumers that
- 6:36Speaker 1: everything out there is it's pretty darn, pretty darn functional,
- 6:40Speaker 1: So I can't complain about that. But you asked where
- 6:43Speaker 1: my first hunt is I'm going to I'm going to
- 6:45Speaker 1: Idaho for a white tail hunt soon. What about you guys? Yeah,
- 6:51Speaker 1: we're headed in Nebraska for for white till as well.
- 6:53Speaker 1: I guess it's any deer tag, but be pretty white
- 6:56Speaker 1: soil heavy just because it's uh what we know, you know.
- 6:59Speaker 1: But I'm not gonna turned down an opportunity on stalk
- 7:01Speaker 1: or shot at a mule to here either. So excited.
- 7:04Speaker 1: That's actually my first like early I guess you call
- 7:08Speaker 1: it early season hunt, you know, like a September velvet
- 7:11Speaker 1: hunt or whatever. It's my first time to do that.
- 7:12Speaker 1: I usually go elk hunting this time of year. And
- 7:16Speaker 1: then uh, Tyler and I talked a lot about stuff
- 7:18Speaker 1: and decided we go try to do like an adventure
- 7:20Speaker 1: hunt kind of more for deer instead. So that's kind
- 7:24Speaker 1: of the plan. That's awesome. What else is on the
- 7:27Speaker 1: slate this year? You guys travel a lot? How many states?
- 7:30Speaker 1: What are you hitting? Um, that's a great question to
- 7:37Speaker 1: you probably know this, but as public plan hunters sometimes
- 7:40Speaker 1: even states you're you're a little bit conservative about mentioning,
- 7:43Speaker 1: but now not a big I guess we have if
- 7:46Speaker 1: you want to give me like code names for him
- 7:47Speaker 1: or like abbreviations. So Brasker, we're going to Braska, We're
- 7:53Speaker 1: going to SD South the quarter and then uh, and
- 7:57Speaker 1: then it'll be Texas, maybe probably Illinois, Uh, can Kansas
- 8:02Speaker 1: and uh maybe a couple other fill ins definitely one
- 8:05Speaker 1: other Uh, there might be like Oklahoma. Um, just kind
- 8:10Speaker 1: of depends. Like you probably know this, but like once
- 8:13Speaker 1: November comes, anything can happen, and it's just like it's
- 8:16Speaker 1: the same thing for your travel plans, like at any
- 8:18Speaker 1: time it can change. You know, well, you'all kind of
- 8:20Speaker 1: in a similar situation over the past few years at least,
- 8:23Speaker 1: where like Tyler, this is your season mark. I think
- 8:26Speaker 1: it was nine team when you shot the Big Buck.
- 8:29Speaker 1: But like there's sometimes a deer come into your life
- 8:31Speaker 1: and just like wreck your plans completely in a good way,
- 8:35Speaker 1: you know, just like, Okay, everything is on hold until
- 8:39Speaker 1: something happens here. And it's great to have the flexibility
- 8:42Speaker 1: to be able to do that. I think that's really nice.
- 8:45Speaker 1: I missed that a little bit because since starting to
- 8:48Speaker 1: film stuff like this, like the US filming the Back
- 8:52Speaker 1: for the last couple of years and now this year
- 8:53Speaker 1: we're filming some new stuff. We have to have like
- 8:56Speaker 1: stuff locked in, like because we're scheduling cameraman and and
- 9:00Speaker 1: all that kind of stuff. That's totally thrown out my
- 9:03Speaker 1: ability to to to to add hoc and to improvise.
- 9:07Speaker 1: So I feel like I now my hands tied in this.
- 9:10Speaker 1: I can't complain about it, because I guess do cool stuff.
- 9:12Speaker 1: But I'm going to complain about right now, I guess
- 9:14Speaker 1: and say that I missed your flexibility? What else? What
- 9:18Speaker 1: else is podcasting? So just complaining for an hour, that's true.
- 9:23Speaker 1: I'm glad, that's I'm glad I don't have the only
- 9:25Speaker 1: podcast like that. Oh man, So a heck of a
- 9:31Speaker 1: heck of a slate for you guys, And it's it's
- 9:34Speaker 1: perfect to hear that, to know what you guys have
- 9:36Speaker 1: coming down the pipeline, because a lot of what I
- 9:38Speaker 1: was hoping to talk about today was it was about
- 9:41Speaker 1: how you do this, how you balance these trips um.
- 9:44Speaker 1: You know, I've done a lot of this traveling, hunting
- 9:46Speaker 1: just like you guys. A lot of other people are
- 9:48Speaker 1: starting to do that kind of stuff too, But it
- 9:50Speaker 1: seems like everyone has their own little thing, their own
- 9:53Speaker 1: little style, their own little I don't know, method to
- 9:57Speaker 1: the madness. So it's it's interesting to me. No matter
- 10:00Speaker 1: how many people I talked to that travel and hunt
- 10:02Speaker 1: new places and hunt public plan, I always love to
- 10:04Speaker 1: see into their minds that are always unique from mine.
- 10:07Speaker 1: But but you guys are much more unique than most
- 10:11Speaker 1: of the people I've talked to you because of one
- 10:13Speaker 1: really big thing. The big thing is that and this
- 10:18Speaker 1: is crazy. Like when I sat down, I was thinking
- 10:20Speaker 1: about this. I can't believe it's true. And I'm gonna
- 10:23Speaker 1: get murdered for this being true once people realize the case.
- 10:29Speaker 1: I don't think I have ever, not once had somebody
- 10:33Speaker 1: from Texas on the Wired Hunt podcast. What in the
- 10:37Speaker 1: world that's for rott now? And yeah, I had to
- 10:41Speaker 1: correct this head to correct it in a big way.
- 10:44Speaker 1: So unless I mean other than the rout fresh stuff,
- 10:48Speaker 1: but I mean, like for a main episode, for a
- 10:50Speaker 1: main real wire Hunt episode, I've never had a Texas
- 10:54Speaker 1: deer hunter around here unless there's someone I can't think of.
- 10:56Speaker 1: That's just blanking. I'm getting old and I've got kids,
- 10:58Speaker 1: so it's possible I've forgotten stuff, Yes, very possible. No,
- 11:01Speaker 1: but that's We're man, thank you, And you need some
- 11:06Speaker 1: Southern accents. I know, I know you're You're not the
- 11:09Speaker 1: first person telling me that they're sick of here in
- 11:11Speaker 1: my stupid Michigan accent and talking about the weird things
- 11:15Speaker 1: we do up here. So oh man, it's fun. I
- 11:17Speaker 1: love it. You know. Um my mom is from Minnesota,
- 11:21Speaker 1: so like you're speaking my language, I just don't speaking
- 11:24Speaker 1: back to you. I'm glad you understand the least. So
- 11:29Speaker 1: it's okay. Would that would that being the case, like
- 11:31Speaker 1: we have to at least spend I gotta get a
- 11:33Speaker 1: Texas perspective on Texas deer hunting before we go any further. Yeah, So,
- 11:41Speaker 1: as a as Texans yourselves living down there, what do
- 11:45Speaker 1: you think about Texas deer hunting culture? What do you
- 11:47Speaker 1: think about how it's perceived about the stuff you see
- 11:51Speaker 1: going around you? Is is what I think Texas deer
- 11:54Speaker 1: hunting culture what it actually is. It's that's that of course,
- 11:59Speaker 1: that's pretty jecktive question. You're very knowledgeable guys, so you
- 12:02Speaker 1: may not quite think what others perceived exactly. I would
- 12:05Speaker 1: say that, Um, if if you don't know much about
- 12:09Speaker 1: Texas hunting, the cliches you have heard definitely exist, like
- 12:13Speaker 1: they're they're definitely a parts of Texas that are you know,
- 12:16Speaker 1: it's high fence ranches and big buck contests and corn
- 12:20Speaker 1: in the middle of two tracks from Big Tarer Blinds,
- 12:23Speaker 1: you know, and and like that culture in itself. I'm
- 12:25Speaker 1: not gonna go down the high fence road too far
- 12:28Speaker 1: because I have a lot to say about that. But uh,
- 12:30Speaker 1: you know, just the culture of the chan can't tease
- 12:33Speaker 1: stuff like that, and I expect me not to press
- 12:35Speaker 1: you on it. Um, I'll just say this, it's all
- 12:39Speaker 1: a pen. I don't care how big it is. It's
- 12:41Speaker 1: a pen. That's what I think about it. But um, yeah,
- 12:45Speaker 1: not a big fan, but that's a pen for mission.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Thanks for translating. Let's keep that going. Not the same
- 12:54Speaker 1: thing as dropping a pen. But you know, as far
- 12:59Speaker 1: as just like that style of hunt. You know, of course,
- 13:01Speaker 1: Texas has a very generous rifle season, um and uh
- 13:06Speaker 1: a ton of private land and um a lot of
- 13:09Speaker 1: culture and history behind going to uh what we call
- 13:12Speaker 1: the deer lease, which all meant you know, have like
- 13:15Speaker 1: a similar concept of like deer camp. You know, it's
- 13:18Speaker 1: it's kind of the same kind of thing where you
- 13:21Speaker 1: uh all head down after you know, watching college football
- 13:24Speaker 1: or whatever. And go sit out and hunt over bait
- 13:27Speaker 1: and and you know, see what comes in, you know,
- 13:29Speaker 1: and it's uh, that's how I started out, and so
- 13:32Speaker 1: I grew up. I didn't do any high fence hunting,
- 13:34Speaker 1: you know. And I think Tyler you probably did a
- 13:36Speaker 1: lot of the same stuff, right, yeah, yeah, the same thing.
- 13:38Speaker 1: I mean, dear uh the deer lease what we called
- 13:41Speaker 1: it all time for for my family as well, and
- 13:43Speaker 1: we just yeah, you uh, you leave out on a
- 13:46Speaker 1: Friday and drive west through the Metroplex and um, you know,
- 13:51Speaker 1: go usually stay in a hotel. So that's the kind
- 13:53Speaker 1: of the difference I guess in like a deer camp,
- 13:56Speaker 1: um a lot of times, um, there's not like a
- 13:59Speaker 1: camp on the place or whatever. But yeah, that's that's
- 14:01Speaker 1: kind of like I'm actually Casey and I were talking
- 14:04Speaker 1: about this. We're at the bow shop yesterday, um, as
- 14:06Speaker 1: we talked about getting our bows worked on, and the
- 14:10Speaker 1: you know, the uh the kind of some of the
- 14:14Speaker 1: cliches that you hear about big Bucks and stuff like that.
- 14:17Speaker 1: We're all kind of at home talking about amongst each
- 14:19Speaker 1: other about these things, and like I didn't feel like
- 14:22Speaker 1: I like, um, some of the different cultural ideologies that
- 14:27Speaker 1: we have um, but you know, there are different little
- 14:31Speaker 1: niches where you've got certain guys that think a lot.
- 14:35Speaker 1: You know, I have no problem with with high fences,
- 14:37Speaker 1: and then there's some guys that, uh are kind of indifferent,
- 14:40Speaker 1: and then there's some guys that you know, absolutely can't
- 14:43Speaker 1: stand them. And so you know, just I think that, well,
- 14:48Speaker 1: I don't know for sure what the perspective is outside
- 14:51Speaker 1: of the state. I do think that, uh, we get
- 14:54Speaker 1: kind of a pompous um we have, like people think
- 14:58Speaker 1: we have a pompous air about us. I guess sometimes
- 15:01Speaker 1: being from Texas week bigger and better and that kind
- 15:03Speaker 1: of thing. You know, Dallas Cowboys Man, Dallas Cowboys much
- 15:07Speaker 1: brag about there, yea sir. Uh. But anyway, it's just
- 15:14Speaker 1: I think that, uh, you know, like sometimes when we
- 15:16Speaker 1: got a state me in case at least, we try
- 15:18Speaker 1: to kind of like laylo at a Colorado trailhead because
- 15:21Speaker 1: we feel like everybody up there hates Texas because they
- 15:24Speaker 1: come in hunt otc elk, you know whatever. So we
- 15:27Speaker 1: have to kind of think about that sometimes when we're
- 15:30Speaker 1: out and about. But I think hunting culture wise, though,
- 15:34Speaker 1: it's like maybe this could compare for for you specifically,
- 15:37Speaker 1: and other people might have a similar idea. Um, you know,
- 15:41Speaker 1: Texas is a huge state geographically, right, so um, you
- 15:47Speaker 1: I know, Michigan is pretty spread out. We were there
- 15:49Speaker 1: a couple of weeks ago. It's a cool place, but
- 15:51Speaker 1: we were in southern Michigan and it's completely different than
- 15:53Speaker 1: the up right, so uh texts imagine Texas, uh like that,
- 15:58Speaker 1: but like in seven different, seven different directions, you know.
- 16:02Speaker 1: So what people think about is the cliche Texas type
- 16:06Speaker 1: hunt is pretty regional, you know, it's it's probably a
- 16:10Speaker 1: you know, what do you say, two two d square
- 16:13Speaker 1: mile area something like that, which sounds like a huge
- 16:15Speaker 1: chunk of land and it is. But like you also
- 16:17Speaker 1: have all these different subsets or you know, uh, I
- 16:20Speaker 1: guess you would say, um biomas or whatever they might
- 16:23Speaker 1: be of just different hunting cultures. You know. Where we live,
- 16:26Speaker 1: we're kind of right on the edge of um kind
- 16:29Speaker 1: of more of a a grarian like what you might
- 16:33Speaker 1: think of as Kansas, Oklahoma top stuff where there is
- 16:36Speaker 1: some you know, beans and corn and things like that
- 16:38Speaker 1: kind of north of us. And then kind of where
- 16:41Speaker 1: we are exactly is the transition into like more of
- 16:44Speaker 1: Deep South type stuff with pines and oaks and stuff
- 16:47Speaker 1: like that, so much more. Still, you know a lot
- 16:50Speaker 1: of gun hunting that goes on, um but close quarters,
- 16:55Speaker 1: long sits without seeing any deer, stuff like that. And
- 16:58Speaker 1: that's kind of how we grew up hunting, at least
- 17:01Speaker 1: closer to home. You know, Like the the dear least
- 17:04Speaker 1: thing was almost like vacation. He really was the vacation
- 17:07Speaker 1: that we had. Now, what about dear behavior, dear numbers,
- 17:13Speaker 1: dear quality, all that. Now, understanding that, like you just said,
- 17:17Speaker 1: very regional. This might be different, obviously different in different
- 17:19Speaker 1: parts of the state. But if you had to, if
- 17:21Speaker 1: you had to give me a Texas dear one, oh one,
- 17:25Speaker 1: can you give me like how And I guess what
- 17:28Speaker 1: I'm gonna ask you is here because we we need
- 17:30Speaker 1: a reference point. Tell me how Texas deer are different
- 17:33Speaker 1: compared to like the Midwestern states you've been to that
- 17:35Speaker 1: I've also been to and that a lot of people
- 17:37Speaker 1: listening have, Um, what's that? How does that differ? Because
- 17:41Speaker 1: I know there's differences there. What stands up to you? Yeah,
- 17:46Speaker 1: tiny body, Yeah, so Tyler actually uh killed a giant
- 17:53Speaker 1: possibly once in a lifetime deear off of his property
- 17:56Speaker 1: here last year, which none of you'll need to know
- 17:58Speaker 1: where that's at. But and uh, he for sure it's
- 18:03Speaker 1: just a beautiful specimen, right but um, you walk up
- 18:07Speaker 1: on him and it's just body, you know, maybe two
- 18:10Speaker 1: thirds of what you might see in most of your
- 18:12Speaker 1: Midwestern states. You know, like what do you think that
- 18:14Speaker 1: do your weight on the hood? Man? Hundred and that
- 18:18Speaker 1: maybe um, you know, just to completely different, not to
- 18:23Speaker 1: make anybody mad here, but subspecies I guess of deer.
- 18:28Speaker 1: So I mean even like skinning him out, like the
- 18:32Speaker 1: hair was so much shorter and thinner and the skin
- 18:34Speaker 1: was so much thinner because they just don't have to
- 18:37Speaker 1: you know, Like we still get a lot of golf
- 18:39Speaker 1: are here, so we have a pretty moderate uh winner
- 18:42Speaker 1: and we can almost grow citrus trees here, you know. Yeah,
- 18:48Speaker 1: so um but like you know, like if I was
- 18:51Speaker 1: to think about trying to explain this to people who
- 18:54Speaker 1: haven't been to Texas and deer hunted, I would think,
- 18:56Speaker 1: um as our region and maybe maybe like also the
- 19:00Speaker 1: deep East Texas stuff has been kind of a similar
- 19:03Speaker 1: region with smaller bodied deer uh some kind of like
- 19:06Speaker 1: darker hair, characteristic traits. Um, A lot of the rut
- 19:10Speaker 1: is going to be like probably smack dab in the
- 19:12Speaker 1: middle of November, like around the fourteenth. You know, he's
- 19:16Speaker 1: seeing really good trail camera data around the fourteenth of November. Um,
- 19:19Speaker 1: so obviously like that's when the chasing period is happening
- 19:23Speaker 1: the most pronounced, I guess um. And then you could
- 19:26Speaker 1: go down to the golf where Casey spent some time
- 19:31Speaker 1: on the coast and what would they rutting in Michael
- 19:34Speaker 1: August and September one they were run before um, you
- 19:38Speaker 1: know even your season started. And that was always the
- 19:41Speaker 1: local thing was like, wow, we don't even get the
- 19:42Speaker 1: hunt on the run. But yeah, that's a weird thing too,
- 19:44Speaker 1: because like they manage UM, they manage our state kind of,
- 19:48Speaker 1: you know, they try to do like some regions, but
- 19:50Speaker 1: it's not really UM as a microregional or microregionally managed
- 19:56Speaker 1: as it should be probably, But I mean you've got
- 20:00Speaker 1: you've got that happening on like in the South Texas
- 20:02Speaker 1: Gold Gulf Coast area and then over to the west
- 20:05Speaker 1: is all the brush country, which is mesquites and sindaro
- 20:08Speaker 1: and stuff like that, and um, that's where the big
- 20:11Speaker 1: money is in the big ranches, lots of high fence
- 20:12Speaker 1: places down there, still low fence places too, and you've
- 20:16Speaker 1: got a mid December rut kind of early to mid December,
- 20:20Speaker 1: um is when you see the most chasing and stuff
- 20:23Speaker 1: like that. And then you've got the Transpacas region way
- 20:26Speaker 1: out west. If you look at kind of that uh
- 20:28Speaker 1: western a little pointy thing where the rio meets um,
- 20:32Speaker 1: that's all gonna be a lot more area and mountainous
- 20:36Speaker 1: um and and really more multley than anything. Carmen White Tip,
- 20:41Speaker 1: Carmen mountin White Til right over there some of that.
- 20:43Speaker 1: I mean, I've spent some time out there, and there
- 20:45Speaker 1: are white hills all the way out, but it's just
- 20:49Speaker 1: I don't know, it's almost accessible because so many large
- 20:52Speaker 1: land tracks, you know. That's that's I mean, it's so
- 20:54Speaker 1: it's so privatized out there. You're talking about like Jeff
- 20:57Speaker 1: Bezos is they got one of the owners of land
- 21:00Speaker 1: out there, you know, so like um. Then you've got
- 21:03Speaker 1: the Panhandle region, which is a little more of that
- 21:04Speaker 1: kind of Midwest feeling a little bit bigger body deer
- 21:07Speaker 1: um overall UM, little lower numbers um throughout and still
- 21:12Speaker 1: very privatized. So this is stuff you know more about
- 21:15Speaker 1: with the lower real Grand Valley stuff down there that's
- 21:18Speaker 1: like 're not lower but real Grand Valley. You have
- 21:21Speaker 1: the Golden Triangle where it's an anomaly of dear body size. Yeah,
- 21:26Speaker 1: so that brush country I was talking about is typically
- 21:29Speaker 1: the deer there are a bigger body size as well
- 21:31Speaker 1: than most of the rest of the state. Um. And
- 21:33Speaker 1: I don't know why that is necessarily because just good
- 21:39Speaker 1: they say mesquite mesquite beans are actually a high high
- 21:41Speaker 1: source of protein. I don't know, but yeah, those are
- 21:44Speaker 1: kind of some of the regions. And we've got like
- 21:46Speaker 1: North Texas, what's considered kind of North Texas, which is
- 21:48Speaker 1: like DFW region and all that surrounding and out west
- 21:51Speaker 1: a little ways to the Panhandle, and that's still pretty
- 21:54Speaker 1: mesquite heavy. Um. I think those mesquites actually came up
- 21:57Speaker 1: with the cattle drives from like Mexico, and since all
- 22:00Speaker 1: the things that's kind of cool living around here is
- 22:02Speaker 1: that like when you see mesquite, like we have a
- 22:04Speaker 1: couple of patches locally, you know, it's because those cattle
- 22:07Speaker 1: were driven up from like that brush country stuff way
- 22:10Speaker 1: down south and then defecated and spread or spread seeds
- 22:14Speaker 1: up here. So it's kind of a it's just a
- 22:16Speaker 1: cool legacy type thing. And then right in the middle
- 22:19Speaker 1: of the hill country, and we call it hill country.
- 22:21Speaker 1: A lot of people up in like your area would
- 22:23Speaker 1: probably laugh at us because they're not you know, it's
- 22:25Speaker 1: just hillier than everything else. But it's a lot of
- 22:28Speaker 1: limestone and stuff like that, real pretty country. It's actually
- 22:30Speaker 1: really hide to all our real estate. A lot of it,
- 22:33Speaker 1: um and and there is some public land down there,
- 22:38Speaker 1: a lot of it's on a draw And those deer
- 22:40Speaker 1: are very small bodied overall, and um, very plentiful. It's
- 22:45Speaker 1: wild man like. Um, you know you're talking. I think
- 22:48Speaker 1: you're kind of a looting like you were talking some
- 22:50Speaker 1: about like, you know, body characteristics and stuff like that,
- 22:53Speaker 1: and of course we went straight to body size, but
- 22:56Speaker 1: you know, antlers or what kind of makes this thing around.
- 23:00Speaker 1: You know, it's it's it's so weird how it's been
- 23:03Speaker 1: stigmatized when you talk about trophies and things like that,
- 23:05Speaker 1: just because of you know how just in the public
- 23:09Speaker 1: everything we do is now right, so you have to
- 23:11Speaker 1: just kind of be careful about the way you describe things.
- 23:13Speaker 1: But it also makes you, um take a little extra
- 23:16Speaker 1: effort to explain your reasoning on stuff. But anyways, you
- 23:20Speaker 1: know for antler size and stuff like that. Uh, I
- 23:23Speaker 1: feel like most people down here are just doing their
- 23:28Speaker 1: best to shoot something that's you know in the and
- 23:34Speaker 1: ups top thing. You know. It's just anytime you see
- 23:38Speaker 1: a Deyer around here that's gonna score super high, it's
- 23:40Speaker 1: because it has like a one forties to one fifties
- 23:43Speaker 1: top frame and a bunch of junk. You know. That's like,
- 23:46Speaker 1: that's what is gonna usually happen. We just don't have
- 23:49Speaker 1: the genetics, at least in our area to have those
- 23:53Speaker 1: you know, seventies and eighties top de Yer. But it
- 23:57Speaker 1: happens every once in a while. So uh, there's always
- 24:00Speaker 1: of these old stories and you might know the other
- 24:01Speaker 1: end of it. But um, like you go to Texas
- 24:04Speaker 1: or Mr. Something to be a old guy there and
- 24:05Speaker 1: he's like, oh, that's one of them deer. It's got
- 24:07Speaker 1: something Michigan blood and him. You know, back in the
- 24:09Speaker 1: eight down here. They love to talk about that. They
- 24:13Speaker 1: love it. But I don't know how y'all had to
- 24:16Speaker 1: give away, but it must have been millions. I'm glad
- 24:20Speaker 1: that a few of them made it to you. Yeah,
- 24:38Speaker 1: what about behavior? I mean, if if I'm thinking about
- 24:43Speaker 1: the assumptions I have of Texas. I've never hunted there.
- 24:46Speaker 1: I have spent a little bit of time, and I've
- 24:48Speaker 1: got family that lived down there, so I've visited, uh
- 24:50Speaker 1: and so I've seen some of the critters running around.
- 24:52Speaker 1: If I had to make an assumption about Texas deer,
- 24:55Speaker 1: my assumption from two thousand miles away is that there's
- 25:00Speaker 1: a lot of them. They are kind of dumb. They
- 25:04Speaker 1: come into the corn feeder and just feed like birds,
- 25:06Speaker 1: blah blah blah blah blah, and those things that you see.
- 25:08Speaker 1: And then secondly, they react to rattling more than anywhere else.
- 25:13Speaker 1: That's another thing that I feel like stands out that
- 25:15Speaker 1: I've heard. I don't know if that's a myth or not,
- 25:17Speaker 1: but if I we're gonna pull these assumptions, I'd say
- 25:20Speaker 1: rattling works like crazy in Texas. Tell me is any
- 25:23Speaker 1: of that actually true? And then number two, having the
- 25:27Speaker 1: experience you guys have of Midwest and Texas, how do
- 25:31Speaker 1: you actually see things being different from a behavior standpoint
- 25:34Speaker 1: and how they operate and all that stuff. It's wild
- 25:38Speaker 1: because I hate to go back to this, but it's
- 25:40Speaker 1: so regional because we have such a large state. I
- 25:43Speaker 1: would say that what we hunt on a normal basis,
- 25:47Speaker 1: which is kind of the eastern half of the state,
- 25:49Speaker 1: none of those things that you've mentioned would be true here.
- 25:52Speaker 1: But what we have here looks nothing like what you
- 25:55Speaker 1: might get a chance to see on TV, because everybody
- 25:57Speaker 1: does go where it's probably a little easier to do,
- 26:01Speaker 1: you know, like, for instance, where we live, UM, a
- 26:07Speaker 1: lot of you know, suburban lot type areas in in UM,
- 26:11Speaker 1: you know, neighborhoods and stuff. But even the larger tracks,
- 26:14Speaker 1: I mean, you're talking about forty fifty acres stuff like that,
- 26:16Speaker 1: which I'm is probably kind of similar to UM, you know,
- 26:19Speaker 1: kind of where you're from. Whereas out west, you know,
- 26:21Speaker 1: in the western half of our state. Uh, you know,
- 26:24Speaker 1: two thousand acres is a small place. So what ends
- 26:27Speaker 1: up happening where we live is since it's um, you know,
- 26:30Speaker 1: bait is legal here, every twenty acre property has a
- 26:34Speaker 1: corn feeder. So, uh, it's kind of one of those
- 26:37Speaker 1: situations where if everyone's on the same plane, you're on
- 26:40Speaker 1: the same plane. You know, if you have a corner
- 26:42Speaker 1: in the middle of two thousand acres, you can bring
- 26:44Speaker 1: some deer in, you know, But if you have twenty
- 26:47Speaker 1: corn feeders on two thousand acres, you can't bring in
- 26:49Speaker 1: very many fere you know, so I think, Um, we've
- 26:53Speaker 1: talked about this at length on our show before, but
- 26:57Speaker 1: corn is kind of a weird deal because it can
- 27:00Speaker 1: make some things good. It can make situations calmer. Tyler
- 27:03Speaker 1: talks about this a lot, like, if you can get
- 27:05Speaker 1: a year where they're feeding, they're usually very comfortable, So
- 27:08Speaker 1: a lot of times you can make very ethical, good
- 27:10Speaker 1: clean shots. However, um, do you seem to like recognize
- 27:15Speaker 1: that they are being fed a lot of times? You know? So, Um,
- 27:19Speaker 1: maybe in a place like you see like on TV
- 27:22Speaker 1: where um, you know it's fairly low pressure, a large
- 27:25Speaker 1: track of land. Uh, you know, they come into the
- 27:27Speaker 1: feeder like you're saying, and a lot of times Uh,
- 27:30Speaker 1: honestly those around here do that, you know. But it's
- 27:33Speaker 1: weird how bucks have a different mentality about things. Yeah,
- 27:35Speaker 1: we have to, we feel like around here as far
- 27:38Speaker 1: as feeding goes, Um, we hand feed for um. Like
- 27:45Speaker 1: if you if you put up a feeder that throws automatically,
- 27:47Speaker 1: you know, twice a day or something like that, which
- 27:49Speaker 1: a lot of guys do, it's a lot easier on you.
- 27:51Speaker 1: But um, you just don't see big bucks show up
- 27:54Speaker 1: to those very often. Um So a lot of times
- 27:57Speaker 1: what guys will do that are in the know kind
- 28:00Speaker 1: of will they'll just throw out a couple of bags
- 28:02Speaker 1: of corn and you know, put a trail camera over it.
- 28:06Speaker 1: If there's a big deer in the area, then they'll
- 28:08Speaker 1: just try to keep some corn there for a while.
- 28:10Speaker 1: A lot of times us to eat it all. Yeah, yeah,
- 28:13Speaker 1: that's that's another issue you know that we we do bad.
- 28:17Speaker 1: I'd say this too, is that, Um, you know this
- 28:20Speaker 1: is all privately in discussion. Tyler and I hunt probably
- 28:23Speaker 1: seventy five public land maybe more here in Texas and
- 28:26Speaker 1: uh on that baiting is out, so you pretty much
- 28:30Speaker 1: actually hunt deer. Yeah, but yeah, I mean as far
- 28:33Speaker 1: as like behaviors go, um and rattling and stuff, we
- 28:37Speaker 1: hardly do it up here where we're from. Not that
- 28:40Speaker 1: it hasn't worked before us before, but it's just it's such.
- 28:43Speaker 1: I mean, what I like to tell people is where
- 28:46Speaker 1: you're seeing the TV shows down in the brush country, Um,
- 28:49Speaker 1: I can drive there, or I can drive into Illinois,
- 28:53Speaker 1: you know what I mean. Like that's the same amount
- 28:56Speaker 1: of time in different directions. So, um, it's to say
- 29:01Speaker 1: it's a different region. It's it's basically a different country
- 29:04Speaker 1: almost it's Mexico, you know what I mean. It's it's
- 29:07Speaker 1: completely different. That's that's really I opening to think of
- 29:09Speaker 1: it that way. So then my next question is, so
- 29:12Speaker 1: why do you go to Illinois instead of going to
- 29:15Speaker 1: the other part of Texas? Like why why believe the
- 29:17Speaker 1: Texas the Glory Land, the lone Star state. And yeah,
- 29:22Speaker 1: so that's a good point because we do have a
- 29:24Speaker 1: you know, we have a tag. Our tags are here,
- 29:25Speaker 1: you know, and it's a resident fee and everything. So um,
- 29:28Speaker 1: but the reason is, um, I don't know. This is
- 29:32Speaker 1: I looked a stat up years ago. I'm not sure
- 29:35Speaker 1: how it ranks, but I'm sure it's very accurate still
- 29:37Speaker 1: for the most part. But um, Texas when I looked
- 29:40Speaker 1: this stat up, was the ninth largest. Um. Essentially, if
- 29:45Speaker 1: you were look at all the countries in the world
- 29:47Speaker 1: and their economies, we would be the ninth largest country
- 29:50Speaker 1: in the world, as as the state of Texas. So
- 29:53Speaker 1: I looked at it the other day. We've lost a spot,
- 29:56Speaker 1: so we know. But the point is, like that money
- 30:01Speaker 1: that comes out of Dallas and Austin and Houston and
- 30:04Speaker 1: San Antonio and all the and you know, all the
- 30:07Speaker 1: oil and stuff like that out west and and on
- 30:09Speaker 1: the coast. That money translates into corporate leases, which, um,
- 30:14Speaker 1: you know, if you're talking about the best hunting in
- 30:16Speaker 1: the state down there where I'm talking about in South Texas,
- 30:19Speaker 1: I mean, you're talking there are those are places that
- 30:22Speaker 1: people have to die before you get a chance to
- 30:24Speaker 1: hunt because they're these you know, I mean some of
- 30:28Speaker 1: these places are you know, Jerry Jones is the guy
- 30:32Speaker 1: that you know and his his his kids and grandkids
- 30:35Speaker 1: get done or something, you know, like and they go
- 30:37Speaker 1: once a year or whatever. But like that's the kind
- 30:39Speaker 1: of money that we're dealing with. I mean, and just
- 30:42Speaker 1: not obviously not everybody's high profile, but they have lots
- 30:46Speaker 1: of money and so um. And then there's these big
- 30:48Speaker 1: businesses that have corporate leases that um they get to
- 30:52Speaker 1: you know, send twenty or thirty dudes out and and
- 30:55Speaker 1: they they'll hunt it, you know, throughout the year and
- 30:57Speaker 1: they coordinate all that through email and whatever else. You
- 31:00Speaker 1: compare that with you know, a out of state o
- 31:03Speaker 1: TC tag that's you know, toppy end sevens, you know,
- 31:07Speaker 1: I mean, very top end the Illinois less than five bucks,
- 31:10Speaker 1: you know, so heir that to you know, what it
- 31:13Speaker 1: would take to get on a They do it by
- 31:15Speaker 1: gun down there, you know, and you you do uh
- 31:18Speaker 1: usually season leases and you know by gun is you know,
- 31:22Speaker 1: thirty five is probably a steel nowadays, you know, on
- 31:25Speaker 1: a spot. And you pair all that with the concept
- 31:28Speaker 1: of to do all this within your state, you have
- 31:30Speaker 1: to find private land to do it on, because you know,
- 31:33Speaker 1: last I checked for like two point three percent public
- 31:36Speaker 1: land access, like the accessible to hunting. I think there's
- 31:38Speaker 1: four percent in the state. But and then of those,
- 31:42Speaker 1: uh that two point three if you want to really
- 31:45Speaker 1: get down and look at what you can actually go
- 31:47Speaker 1: out in white tail hunt with archery or gun equipment,
- 31:49Speaker 1: it's real low without drawing, and the draw system is
- 31:54Speaker 1: you know, pretty stacked. Whereas you had to say a
- 31:57Speaker 1: state in the Midwest that's over the count or you
- 32:01Speaker 1: got your you know, Foord to Sitting hundred area, I
- 32:03Speaker 1: guess you five dollar tag um and then you've got
- 32:07Speaker 1: all this public property that you can go out and
- 32:09Speaker 1: shoot giants on. You know. So you start doing a
- 32:12Speaker 1: little map and it's like, maybe I should go do
- 32:17Speaker 1: so you guys do still stick around a little bit
- 32:20Speaker 1: and do that public land thing in Texas, which, uh,
- 32:23Speaker 1: which does seem hard to do given there so little
- 32:26Speaker 1: of it, but a lot of people probably that are
- 32:28Speaker 1: interested in men. I know there's a ton of hunters
- 32:30Speaker 1: in Texas. What's what are you doing different down there
- 32:34Speaker 1: to actually make that work? Sometimes? Um, you know we've
- 32:40Speaker 1: we've uh one thing that I would say that helps
- 32:43Speaker 1: us to kind of I don't know, separate or whatever,
- 32:46Speaker 1: just to um I try to be more efficient. Is
- 32:50Speaker 1: um identifying plant life. Um, we do a lot of
- 32:56Speaker 1: I don't know, we're both kind of nerds about gardens
- 32:58Speaker 1: and stuff like that. So um, we can just walk
- 33:02Speaker 1: through the woods and pretty much know you know, all
- 33:05Speaker 1: the trees, especially here that we're seeing and what they do,
- 33:09Speaker 1: what they produce. Um, how big the acren is, when
- 33:13Speaker 1: the hogs or deer like to eat it, how long
- 33:16Speaker 1: it's got around? What's this thing? Acorn acre acre and
- 33:21Speaker 1: acorns acorns? Uh? Yeah, so you know there's different times
- 33:26Speaker 1: a year that those cannons break down. Uh, even if
- 33:30Speaker 1: they've been on the ground for a while, you know,
- 33:31Speaker 1: deer won't mess with them until December or something. So
- 33:34Speaker 1: like we kind of do do a lot of that,
- 33:36Speaker 1: and then there's uh other times of the year outside
- 33:39Speaker 1: of hunting that helps us to hang trail cameras, uh
- 33:41Speaker 1: you know, preseason or whatever to learn what deer doing,
- 33:45Speaker 1: um based off of what they're eating, whether that's common
- 33:47Speaker 1: ragweed or cedar elm buds or whatever it might be.
- 33:51Speaker 1: So like that's one thing I think we we use
- 33:53Speaker 1: a lot to our advantage UM. And then you know, honestly,
- 33:57Speaker 1: we've done this uh kind of map scouting digital maps
- 34:00Speaker 1: scouting series we've done the last few years with on
- 34:02Speaker 1: X that's um really just been almost like a practice
- 34:05Speaker 1: session for us all summer, and so I think that's
- 34:07Speaker 1: tremendously helped us to be able to read maps. Yeah,
- 34:12Speaker 1: just go ahead. I was just gonna say, when you're
- 34:14Speaker 1: looking and you're east scouting in this place you hunt
- 34:17Speaker 1: in Texas, are you looking for anything? I'm assuming now,
- 34:23Speaker 1: I know you've already kind of told me that each
- 34:25Speaker 1: of these regions could be so different than the other,
- 34:28Speaker 1: But I gotta believe the east scouting Illinois looks a
- 34:30Speaker 1: lot different than East scouting Texas. No matter what part
- 34:33Speaker 1: of the state, is there anything unique like from a
- 34:36Speaker 1: step one east scouting standpoint that you're thinking, Man, there's
- 34:40Speaker 1: this kind of feature that's really pretty unique to this
- 34:42Speaker 1: area that you never would see in Illinois or Kansas
- 34:45Speaker 1: or Michigan. But here, I know that these kind of
- 34:48Speaker 1: brushy patches And by the way, you might hear chains
- 34:50Speaker 1: on the background. I'm sorry about that, guys. We had
- 34:54Speaker 1: a big tree come down and the guys that are
- 34:56Speaker 1: helping with a little bit of this stuff just showed up. Um.
- 35:00Speaker 1: But anyways, is there anything unique that stands out to
- 35:03Speaker 1: you that's that's special down where you're at versus other places? Um,
- 35:07Speaker 1: as far as maps gotting goes, I think it's more
- 35:11Speaker 1: the way that we uh read our terrain some and
- 35:14Speaker 1: I don't think it's unique to specifically where we're at,
- 35:16Speaker 1: but it might be more of a southern deer hunter
- 35:18Speaker 1: versus northern deer hunter type thing. We we have to
- 35:23Speaker 1: we have to hunt deer a lot of times that
- 35:26Speaker 1: aren't moving to heavy bed defeed type things because, um,
- 35:32Speaker 1: where most of these public properties are that we hunt,
- 35:35Speaker 1: they are old core of engineer properties or w M
- 35:40Speaker 1: A S or whatever it might be. That's just in
- 35:43Speaker 1: low lying areas that aren't good for any type of
- 35:46Speaker 1: agriculture and if there is close agriculture, usually it's hay,
- 35:49Speaker 1: which down here is coastal bermuda, which deer do not
- 35:51Speaker 1: even care about, you know, So uh, A lot of
- 35:54Speaker 1: times we're hunting deer that are on more natural movement patterns.
- 35:57Speaker 1: So we're trying to find uh things that funnel movement,
- 36:01Speaker 1: and that's probably pretty broad across the spectrum no matter
- 36:05Speaker 1: what state you're in. But I think that what we
- 36:08Speaker 1: end up hunting a lot of these creek bottom, river
- 36:10Speaker 1: bottom type uh areas. Okay, and a lot of times
- 36:14Speaker 1: I guess there's two things that I would think about.
- 36:16Speaker 1: There's something that we really like the key on we
- 36:19Speaker 1: call creek horns. I don't know, they might be called
- 36:22Speaker 1: something you know somewhere else, but it's essentially a big
- 36:25Speaker 1: bend in a in a riparian system, right, so uh,
- 36:29Speaker 1: some people might call it a peninsula bow. Yeah, something
- 36:33Speaker 1: like that. But just something that's going to you know,
- 36:37Speaker 1: take whatever deer we're moving in large set area and
- 36:40Speaker 1: make them have to kind of pinch down to go
- 36:43Speaker 1: around the corner of that creek or river or whatever
- 36:47Speaker 1: it may be. We we look for that a lot
- 36:49Speaker 1: because a lot of times on these w maze and
- 36:52Speaker 1: stuff you can. Yeah, there's enough hunters around that if
- 36:56Speaker 1: you see a good looking pinch on the aerial is
- 37:00Speaker 1: going to be a standard too there already, you know,
- 37:01Speaker 1: so you have to find the stuff that's that's kind
- 37:03Speaker 1: of unique to that situation. Yeah. We also, um use
- 37:08Speaker 1: like secondary creek crossings a lot too, so off of
- 37:12Speaker 1: because the creek system generally is a highway for deer.
- 37:16Speaker 1: They're gonna move up and down this creek system a
- 37:18Speaker 1: lot of times, and then they have to cross these
- 37:20Speaker 1: secondary creeks that feed in these feeder creeks, and um,
- 37:24Speaker 1: there is there are very specific points that they cross
- 37:28Speaker 1: on these things sometimes. So if you can find that,
- 37:30Speaker 1: it takes it takes boot scouting to find that for
- 37:32Speaker 1: sure a lot of times. But that's a starting point.
- 37:35Speaker 1: And um, you can usually find the secondary creek on
- 37:39Speaker 1: the you you actually using like the uh the terrain
- 37:43Speaker 1: top of the lines and stuff, and then you can
- 37:45Speaker 1: walk that thing up and down and kind of find
- 37:46Speaker 1: those secondary crossings or whatever. And uh, you know that's
- 37:50Speaker 1: pretty good for for rut and even pre rutt stuff.
- 37:53Speaker 1: But we also kind of have a technique that I
- 37:55Speaker 1: think it's pretty unique for uh. Later season down here.
- 37:59Speaker 1: Um all these properties get a ton of pressure, you know,
- 38:03Speaker 1: as a lot of places do in the country, and
- 38:06Speaker 1: um by you know, mid December, deer actually end up
- 38:10Speaker 1: habitating in places that you wouldn't expect them to. And
- 38:13Speaker 1: we have these these areas on these river bottoms that
- 38:16Speaker 1: are mostly like um floodplain and it will be ash
- 38:21Speaker 1: trees with like hardly any um vegetation on the on
- 38:25Speaker 1: the forest floor. And it's because it's um underwater, you know,
- 38:30Speaker 1: three or four months out of the year, and it's
- 38:33Speaker 1: extremely difficult to hunt because all these trees are five
- 38:35Speaker 1: six inches in diameter, and it's very monotonous and it's
- 38:39Speaker 1: real hard to pattern deer and those deer just know
- 38:41Speaker 1: that people don't like to go into that kind of
- 38:42Speaker 1: stuff and hunt because it's almost impossible to a pick
- 38:46Speaker 1: a spot that you think you'll be within thirty yards
- 38:48Speaker 1: of a deer and also be find something a treat
- 38:51Speaker 1: that's big enough to hang a saddle or a tree
- 38:53Speaker 1: STANDI in. So I think that that's one of the
- 38:55Speaker 1: things that's really kind of helped us with success in
- 38:57Speaker 1: the past, is kind of identifying those places that UM
- 39:00Speaker 1: hunters don't want to go that's an interesting point, another
- 39:07Speaker 1: opposite example, but it's something that's a little bit unique
- 39:11Speaker 1: to what I see. So there's there's finding these places
- 39:13Speaker 1: the hunters wouldn't want to go. Then I also know
- 39:16Speaker 1: you guys have had some success on the native vegetation
- 39:20Speaker 1: that you mentioned where people would probably see it and think, oh,
- 39:22Speaker 1: I should go here. So so what about persimmon thickets
- 39:27Speaker 1: or something I've seen you guys take advantage of that.
- 39:30Speaker 1: And that's something that I never run into up here,
- 39:32Speaker 1: but I know you're seeing down there. Talk to me
- 39:35Speaker 1: a little about that. Uh. So, per simmons are gonna
- 39:38Speaker 1: be a early season food source most of the time.
- 39:41Speaker 1: You'll find some. Tyler actually has one here that's a
- 39:43Speaker 1: late dropper, which is gold if you can find one.
- 39:47Speaker 1: Uh And it's actually kind of nice to hang a
- 39:49Speaker 1: camera on one of those for seasonal data, even if
- 39:51Speaker 1: you're not gonna go back, just to see when they drop.
- 39:53Speaker 1: But uh, if you don't know what a persimmon is,
- 39:56Speaker 1: it's uh, I can't remember the scientific name, but there
- 39:59Speaker 1: and orange fruit that are about the size of a
- 40:01Speaker 1: golf ball. They'll be green in the summer and they'll
- 40:03Speaker 1: start to ripping towards the fall, and um, deer, possums, hogs, raccoons,
- 40:10Speaker 1: everything just love them. And if you taste one that's ripe,
- 40:13Speaker 1: they are actually delicious. But a lot of times us
- 40:16Speaker 1: as humans, we can taste the tannins in them and
- 40:17Speaker 1: they don't taste very good. But animals are a little
- 40:20Speaker 1: bit less sensitive to that. So um, we've just found
- 40:23Speaker 1: especially if you can uh find some later droppers that
- 40:27Speaker 1: are kind of pre rut or or even in early November,
- 40:30Speaker 1: that man, everything is in there. And what happens is
- 40:34Speaker 1: it kind of creates like a a little hub of
- 40:38Speaker 1: deer activity. It's not just a food source, but this
- 40:40Speaker 1: is this is something you see in food sources across
- 40:42Speaker 1: the board, right, Like there's food source staging where uh
- 40:46Speaker 1: you know they want to go in there and eat
- 40:47Speaker 1: the for simmons or eat the beans, eat the corn,
- 40:49Speaker 1: whatever it might be, and but they don't feel quite
- 40:52Speaker 1: comfortable or um, they know they can be in a
- 40:55Speaker 1: certain area and it just ends up being an area
- 40:58Speaker 1: like a social hub. Right. And we see that around
- 41:00Speaker 1: for simmons a lot that we scrapes and rubs and
- 41:02Speaker 1: just doze and bucks. Like last year, um uh we
- 41:06Speaker 1: have antler restrictions where we live, so they have to
- 41:08Speaker 1: be a certain with to uh to be able to shoot.
- 41:12Speaker 1: And we had a book come in that was kind
- 41:14Speaker 1: of right there bordering, and we decided to not uh in.
- 41:17Speaker 1: In retrospect, it was maybe not a great decision, but
- 41:20Speaker 1: it was the right one in the moment. You know,
- 41:22Speaker 1: I kind of have a little bit of uh, what's
- 41:26Speaker 1: that better safe than sorry? That's right, man, You know,
- 41:29Speaker 1: you don't want to do anything uh illegal. But um,
- 41:33Speaker 1: so it was really cool because we actually got to
- 41:35Speaker 1: um just observe. I don't know, we had no win,
- 41:39Speaker 1: so we kind of had like a rising thermal situation
- 41:42Speaker 1: or something. It was. It was really weird. But the
- 41:44Speaker 1: deer pretty much went all around us and never smelled us,
- 41:47Speaker 1: and uh, I just got to see him come in
- 41:49Speaker 1: and and um, we jokingly like to say run around.
- 41:52Speaker 1: He read it around us a good thing, you know,
- 41:54Speaker 1: but he was you know, making scrapes, rubbing on trees
- 41:57Speaker 1: and uh smelling around. And then another younger buck came
- 42:00Speaker 1: in from a different direction, and uh, he like walked
- 42:03Speaker 1: over there and did a very interesting, quiet but prominent snort.
- 42:07Speaker 1: We'se I don't know if you've heard that before, but
- 42:10Speaker 1: in the Midwest, you know, I hear him just you know,
- 42:12Speaker 1: and just blow the out. It was almost like he
- 42:15Speaker 1: knew he was a three year old, so he didn't
- 42:16Speaker 1: want to do too much, but he wanted to let
- 42:18Speaker 1: this one year old know who was the boss of
- 42:19Speaker 1: the the immediate area, you know. But it was just
- 42:22Speaker 1: kind of cool to just see, uh, you know that
- 42:25Speaker 1: interaction and how much can happen around a quality native
- 42:29Speaker 1: natural food source like that. Yeah, and to to kind
- 42:31Speaker 1: of relate that back to like an eat scouting stuff, uh,
- 42:35Speaker 1: one way to find those and you you have to
- 42:37Speaker 1: pair this up with like putting your eyes on this
- 42:39Speaker 1: a lot of this stuff, um, that's how you become
- 42:42Speaker 1: better at finding it on the map without having to
- 42:44Speaker 1: go find it with your boots or whatever. But like basically, um,
- 42:49Speaker 1: you know, on a lot of the stuff we hunt,
- 42:50Speaker 1: we can use. These um per simmons will grow in
- 42:54Speaker 1: the low lying areas and a lot of times in
- 42:56Speaker 1: open areas. So if you've had places been cleared by
- 42:59Speaker 1: the stay, a lot of times they are clearance cedars
- 43:02Speaker 1: and burning woman stuff, and so they have these kind
- 43:04Speaker 1: of little fields and stuff made um that are kind
- 43:07Speaker 1: of going fallow and uh, you can find them. They're
- 43:10Speaker 1: usually growing in thickets. They don't grow by themselves very often.
- 43:14Speaker 1: They grow in thickets, so you can start to find those.
- 43:17Speaker 1: If you find them with your eyes as well, then
- 43:18Speaker 1: you can relate that to almost any map you look at.
- 43:23Speaker 1: As they're saying this, something popped in my mind and
- 43:26Speaker 1: it it kind of takes in another direction. But I
- 43:28Speaker 1: gotta wrap my head around this. Do you guys, do
- 43:34Speaker 1: Texas hunters identify as like being Southern deer hunters or
- 43:37Speaker 1: do you feel like you're in a totally different category?
- 43:39Speaker 1: So what I mean by that is, I mean, do
- 43:41Speaker 1: you and a deer hunter from Alabama, a deer and
- 43:43Speaker 1: from Georgia be like, oh man, those guys up in
- 43:46Speaker 1: the Midwest are always talking about this stuff. It doesn't
- 43:48Speaker 1: relate to us, but you know, we we all get
- 43:51Speaker 1: each other. Do you have that or do you find
- 43:53Speaker 1: yourself on a different island, um from other people down
- 43:57Speaker 1: in the South and southeast. Yeah, there's they're a little
- 44:00Speaker 1: bit of that, you know. Um we live we're like
- 44:03Speaker 1: we're just pretty much in the South and the Southwest
- 44:06Speaker 1: like where we're at. I mean, it's crazy, but like
- 44:09Speaker 1: you know, like Fort Worth and all that is like
- 44:11Speaker 1: a huge steakhouse country, you know, cattle drives, We got
- 44:14Speaker 1: stockyards and Fort Worth like big big stockyards, you know.
- 44:17Speaker 1: And and so like we kind of we actually as
- 44:19Speaker 1: far as food goes, we live in a pretty awesome place.
- 44:22Speaker 1: Killer Cajun food, killer Mexican food, killer steaks. You know.
- 44:25Speaker 1: It's just we got the golf, you know. Yeah, it's
- 44:29Speaker 1: it's like a good place. But we also are kind
- 44:32Speaker 1: of like a mutt in that sense where we don't
- 44:33Speaker 1: really completely relate to anybody. We kind of have this
- 44:37Speaker 1: Southwestern vibe a little bit. And and uh, it's a
- 44:40Speaker 1: little bit different where we're at directly, at least because
- 44:44Speaker 1: we're not thick, thick, heavy pines. So it's a lot
- 44:47Speaker 1: different than like Alabama or something like that. Maybe it's
- 44:50Speaker 1: kind of like you have guys that will be like, oh,
- 44:52Speaker 1: pro football is the best, and then somebody else, like
- 44:54Speaker 1: college footballs with this. But then you get those college
- 44:56Speaker 1: football guys to the side, and like you know, war
- 44:59Speaker 1: Eagle versus roll Tide, you know what I mean. So,
- 45:01Speaker 1: like I'm sure there's uh, there's some guys who would
- 45:04Speaker 1: go back and forth about if South Texas or East
- 45:08Speaker 1: Texas is better hunting, you know, but uh, overall we're
- 45:12Speaker 1: all united and uh, you know, dogging on the Midwestern
- 45:15Speaker 1: ver well, I think it's fun. Man, I don't I
- 45:21Speaker 1: don't know, Uh I would say that kind of going
- 45:23Speaker 1: back to one of the first things you said, Um,
- 45:26Speaker 1: I guess uh as far as culture goes, I don't
- 45:29Speaker 1: know if um I feel personally a whole lot of
- 45:33Speaker 1: like that Texas pride or whatever when it comes to
- 45:36Speaker 1: hunting here versus somewhere else, you know. And that's kind
- 45:38Speaker 1: of why we travel around. Man. I just love dear.
- 45:41Speaker 1: I love going and seeing new places and hunting deer
- 45:43Speaker 1: in new spots, and it's cool to go to the
- 45:46Speaker 1: Midwest and experience that and like Tyler jew Iowa and
- 45:50Speaker 1: nine team right and like to goog go up there
- 45:52Speaker 1: and just see everything that you've heard Bill Winky talk
- 45:55Speaker 1: about your whole life about like how specific days matter
- 45:58Speaker 1: and what happens you know, on this day versus this day.
- 46:01Speaker 1: It's it's neat so important question then, which is better
- 46:06Speaker 1: pro football or college football? Oh? Right up? College? All right,
- 46:13Speaker 1: we can we can continue. That was the correct answer.
- 46:17Speaker 1: But you're kind of the same about as us so
- 46:18Speaker 1: like you don't have a lot to brag about with
- 46:20Speaker 1: the lines, so it's like, you know, yeah, definitely college right, Yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 46:24Speaker 1: We've had many, many better years in the college side.
- 46:27Speaker 1: Uh what do you think about ut in Oklahoma going
- 46:30Speaker 1: to the SEC? Oh? Man, um, it was we can
- 46:36Speaker 1: make it our thirty second segment. So I went to
- 46:40Speaker 1: A and M Texas A and M, which you you
- 46:42Speaker 1: may know of. So for me, I'm like those followers,
- 46:46Speaker 1: you know, But a little part of me, I'm not
- 46:50Speaker 1: gonna tell all my friends, right, but a little part
- 46:52Speaker 1: of me is kind of excited to get to play
- 46:53Speaker 1: those games again. Yeah, it's gonna be interesting. It's can
- 46:57Speaker 1: be very interesting. Okay, so out of the way and
- 47:01Speaker 1: go Green Michigan State University. Uh, part what about what
- 47:06Speaker 1: about this? Do you view is it easy when you
- 47:11Speaker 1: come up to the Midwest, when you go up to
- 47:12Speaker 1: Kansas or Nebraska or Illinois, do you view that as
- 47:15Speaker 1: either this is a piece of cake compared to back home,
- 47:18Speaker 1: or do you go up there knowing this is gonna
- 47:21Speaker 1: be a big challenge, just a different kind of thing.
- 47:23Speaker 1: And tell me that for you, for you individually, been also,
- 47:27Speaker 1: I'd be curious if you have a sense of like
- 47:29Speaker 1: what the general sense is from your friends or other
- 47:31Speaker 1: people you know in the South when they come up,
- 47:33Speaker 1: how do they view this? Um. I think that aspects
- 47:37Speaker 1: of the Midwest are a little easier, and I think
- 47:40Speaker 1: a lot of times that's uh just related to deer densities.
- 47:44Speaker 1: Uh And because of where we live, we don't have
- 47:48Speaker 1: a hot deered density. Now parts of the state are
- 47:51Speaker 1: different than that. But outside of that, man white tail
- 47:54Speaker 1: or white tail, I don't think that like a Michigan
- 47:57Speaker 1: buck is any smarter than you know, put them on
- 48:02Speaker 1: the same plane, right, like a five year old Michigan
- 48:04Speaker 1: buck in a five year old Iowa buck. They're probably
- 48:06Speaker 1: both really keen because God made them that way, right,
- 48:09Speaker 1: they are made to be survivors. So um, you know,
- 48:14Speaker 1: outside of that, you're gonna have a little bit of
- 48:15Speaker 1: regionality where you have deer that have you know, had
- 48:19Speaker 1: arrows fly past their head so they're looking up more
- 48:21Speaker 1: than out, you know, stuff like that. But another thing
- 48:25Speaker 1: that I find easier about the Midwest is that the
- 48:29Speaker 1: deer are larger animals, so they lay down more sign uh.
- 48:35Speaker 1: Rubs in particular, and trails are extremely difficult to find
- 48:40Speaker 1: where we live because the deer just don't weigh a
- 48:42Speaker 1: lot And I think that makes a difference as far
- 48:44Speaker 1: as how much like what kind of pronounced trails you
- 48:47Speaker 1: can see on the ground, and you compare that with
- 48:49Speaker 1: here's another thing we run into a lot um. You
- 48:52Speaker 1: can find a really great trail in the woods, and
- 48:55Speaker 1: there's a really good chance that it's hawks where we live.
- 48:58Speaker 1: So you and don't have that in the Midwest, which
- 49:01Speaker 1: is actually really nice. You know. I don't get me wrong,
- 49:04Speaker 1: I love to shoot them and they're great eating. But
- 49:06Speaker 1: uh and I put the g on the into that
- 49:08Speaker 1: for you, Mark, But because you don't uh uh, you know,
- 49:14Speaker 1: you go up there and you find a good trail
- 49:16Speaker 1: and you're like, oh, hot dog, you know, this is dear,
- 49:18Speaker 1: this is cool. But at the same time, man, it's uh,
- 49:22Speaker 1: you know, there's there's aspects of it that are more difficult.
- 49:25Speaker 1: It's way colder where y'all are at, you know, like
- 49:29Speaker 1: I ain't doing you know two ft about that, So
- 49:34Speaker 1: I think that, uh, it's it's just fun to go
- 49:37Speaker 1: see the differences. Well what do you yeah for me personally?
- 49:40Speaker 1: You know, like I like um, I like to they're
- 49:44Speaker 1: like you said, there's a challenge in late in leaving
- 49:47Speaker 1: home and going somewhere else and learning these new plant types.
- 49:52Speaker 1: And uh also even like the cultural dynamics that happened
- 49:56Speaker 1: in the in within hunters. You know, like if you're
- 49:58Speaker 1: hunting public land and your um, you know, there is
- 50:02Speaker 1: some sort of aspect in the hunt of um other
- 50:07Speaker 1: hunters affecting your hunt. So I don't want to say
- 50:10Speaker 1: like you against other hunters necessarily, but like you have
- 50:13Speaker 1: to understand what they're doing, what they like to do,
- 50:15Speaker 1: you know. I mean there's there's uh different cultures. You know,
- 50:19Speaker 1: there's different times of different seasons where like, um, if
- 50:24Speaker 1: if a state has like a three day gun season,
- 50:26Speaker 1: there's a chance that you don't want to be there
- 50:29Speaker 1: during those three days, you know, because it's gonna be
- 50:32Speaker 1: just a madhouse. But for us in Texas, we've got
- 50:34Speaker 1: a two month rifle season, and UM, you know, basically
- 50:38Speaker 1: after opening weekend, it's about the same amount of deer
- 50:41Speaker 1: gun pressure from the until January, you know, And so
- 50:45Speaker 1: UM knowing that, uh doesn't it doesn't you know, hunt
- 50:49Speaker 1: in Texas doesn't affect my gun season, doesn't affect my
- 50:51Speaker 1: plans really, and so UM there are things like that
- 50:55Speaker 1: that I do like as a challenge when you go
- 50:57Speaker 1: out of state, UM, that you have to kind of
- 51:00Speaker 1: uh observe and figure out UM. And you know, I
- 51:03Speaker 1: wouldn't say that the Midwest necessarily hunts UM necessarily easier UM.
- 51:09Speaker 1: But but like Casey mentioned, with the sign being easier
- 51:13Speaker 1: to see more pronounced, I think that UM hunting around
- 51:18Speaker 1: here when you are able to to, you know, find
- 51:21Speaker 1: sign and make your way UM and spend time out
- 51:24Speaker 1: here doing that than when you go to the Midwest
- 51:26Speaker 1: and these dear way you know, two and twenty two
- 51:29Speaker 1: or fifty pounds, they're they're just making better sign and
- 51:32Speaker 1: it makes things so much more easy. Another thing, lastly,
- 51:35Speaker 1: I would say, is UM A lot of the country
- 51:39Speaker 1: up in the Midwest A lot of times UM I
- 51:42Speaker 1: think lends itself to bow hunting UH a little bit
- 51:45Speaker 1: better because um, you've got less kind of big woods
- 51:51Speaker 1: type atmosphere. I guess, for lack of a better word, we,
- 51:55Speaker 1: like Casey mentioned, we have all these floodplains and stuff,
- 51:58Speaker 1: and it's just so hard to get within thirty yards
- 52:00Speaker 1: of a buck a lot of times, and or even
- 52:02Speaker 1: a deer period, and so UM, I think a lot
- 52:05Speaker 1: of times you've got these little shelter belts, You've got uh,
- 52:08Speaker 1: these little sloughs where the farmer cutting, you know, till,
- 52:13Speaker 1: and so you've got these small areas that deer kind
- 52:16Speaker 1: of automatically just funneling through as they move through cover.
- 52:20Speaker 1: That kind of helps. So I wouldn't I don't want
- 52:23Speaker 1: people to think that, uh, we sit here and crack
- 52:25Speaker 1: on people in the Midwest for all the time for
- 52:27Speaker 1: having hunters between the lines between the yeah, I will
- 52:34Speaker 1: say this, and the kind of uh kind of piggyback
- 52:36Speaker 1: on the sign thing that Tyler is talking about. One
- 52:39Speaker 1: of the things that can be difficult for us is
- 52:41Speaker 1: that we show up and say Iowa, which is I mean,
- 52:45Speaker 1: I think you drew this year, right, so, like you know,
- 52:47Speaker 1: and you hunted. Therefore, sometimes the sign can be overwhelming
- 52:52Speaker 1: because we're like we are like, oh man, a scrape.
- 52:54Speaker 1: This is awesome where we live and you go up there,
- 52:58Speaker 1: there's a scrape every teen yards on pinsline, you know,
- 53:01Speaker 1: And you have to interpret that stuff and and actually
- 53:04Speaker 1: uh make moves to understand that, Hey, I need to
- 53:07Speaker 1: push you in further, I need to go to a
- 53:09Speaker 1: different area. Or how fresh is fresh? Yes, exactly, yes,
- 53:12Speaker 1: and is this is this getting laid down at night
- 53:14Speaker 1: versus the daytime, and all these things, these factors that
- 53:16Speaker 1: you have to play into. So I do think that
- 53:19Speaker 1: there are even some specific challenges in what people think
- 53:24Speaker 1: of is the happy hunting ground. You bring up something
- 53:39Speaker 1: I want to get into, which was if there were
- 53:44Speaker 1: and you kind of alluded to a couple there, I'd
- 53:46Speaker 1: love to hear you dive into a little more. What
- 53:47Speaker 1: I'm wondering is if there are certain general, general things
- 53:53Speaker 1: that you are, general modes that you have to switch
- 53:55Speaker 1: from when going from the South up to one of
- 53:58Speaker 1: these other states in the north of the Midwest. Like
- 54:00Speaker 1: I know, when I go from Michigan to Iowa, I'm
- 54:03Speaker 1: going from a much higher hunting pressure state, too much
- 54:06Speaker 1: lower hunting pressure state. So I always find myself being
- 54:09Speaker 1: really paranoid about something in Iowa and then having to
- 54:12Speaker 1: remind myself, okay, hold on, chillout. These dear act differently
- 54:15Speaker 1: back home. You can get away with this thing or
- 54:17Speaker 1: that thing. So I'm constantly needing to like put on
- 54:20Speaker 1: a different hat when I'm in a certain place or
- 54:22Speaker 1: when I'm going on like a Western white tail hunt,
- 54:24Speaker 1: I gotta put on my Western white tail hunt glasses
- 54:26Speaker 1: and look at things differently because there's just things that
- 54:29Speaker 1: are different. Dear will act differently, or they'll react to
- 54:33Speaker 1: things differently or whatever. So my my overarching question then
- 54:36Speaker 1: is for someone coming from the south doing a traveling
- 54:39Speaker 1: hunt up to Illinois or Kansas or Iowa, Ohio or whatever,
- 54:43Speaker 1: or Michigan, have there been any other things like what
- 54:46Speaker 1: you just described that are general rules, like hey, you
- 54:49Speaker 1: gotta look at sign different or hey, you need to
- 54:52Speaker 1: realize this. Is there anything else that can be helpful
- 54:56Speaker 1: for people doing that first from south to north trip
- 54:59Speaker 1: that they really need to keep in mind and do
- 55:01Speaker 1: differently than back home. Outside of bringing all your clothes,
- 55:05Speaker 1: you have to do that. But I think that uh,
- 55:10Speaker 1: I would say vocalizations are a huge thing for me,
- 55:13Speaker 1: and I understand that I haven't hunted all the state trick,
- 55:16Speaker 1: so I don't know anything really about Michigan or you know,
- 55:20Speaker 1: Minnesota or whatever, but like in some of the Midwestern
- 55:23Speaker 1: states that I've been to, uh, deer vocalizations are a
- 55:26Speaker 1: big thing and it's a thing that you can use.
- 55:28Speaker 1: Whereas in Texas, man rattling works sometimes and then grunts
- 55:33Speaker 1: and snort weys is I have had way more bad
- 55:36Speaker 1: experiences than good, you know, so I would say kind of,
- 55:40Speaker 1: uh up front, that's kind of the thing that I
- 55:43Speaker 1: see for sure. I think you've got something that you
- 55:45Speaker 1: thought of right away to the first thing I thought
- 55:47Speaker 1: of was that if you ever hear anybody use over
- 55:49Speaker 1: arching mark, it's because of you. Just so you know,
- 55:53Speaker 1: I'm telling you. I hear people say all the time,
- 55:55Speaker 1: like Dave that they got that mark Canyon. No, no doubt.
- 55:58Speaker 1: I got a few of those things. I guess. Yeah,
- 56:01Speaker 1: he made a shirt like that one time. Didn't you
- 56:03Speaker 1: like all the sayings from the podcast? Yeah, yeah, we did.
- 56:06Speaker 1: I think I think that that being said was the
- 56:08Speaker 1: big one. Yeah, yeah, that's right. It's funny, dude. Uh No,
- 56:13Speaker 1: I mean to me, like, uh, that's definitely one of them.
- 56:17Speaker 1: Is like getting away with more calling and stuff like that. Um,
- 56:21Speaker 1: I would probably say that, like if I'm leaving uh
- 56:26Speaker 1: and heading north. Um. Some of the things I'm thinking
- 56:30Speaker 1: about are that there is a much more defined like
- 56:35Speaker 1: casey A lived too earlier. UM, Like dates matter, and
- 56:39Speaker 1: so for us, like a couple of years ago, we
- 56:41Speaker 1: had a really big buck on public here in Texas
- 56:44Speaker 1: that we got pictures of on February, I believe, and
- 56:49Speaker 1: he's like fixing a breed of though no doubt. I
- 56:51Speaker 1: mean she's standing like it's about to happen and so um,
- 56:55Speaker 1: and that's not like something that happens here. I mean,
- 56:57Speaker 1: it's not like we don't have a rut in February.
- 56:59Speaker 1: It's not Alabama or something like that. You know, it's
- 57:01Speaker 1: not a weird rut place. But the thing is we're
- 57:04Speaker 1: just so we're just such moderate temperate weather that um,
- 57:09Speaker 1: you know, there's such a long window of opportunity, and
- 57:12Speaker 1: there's yearlings that are coming in I guess in February
- 57:15Speaker 1: at some point, you know, and that that happening. So
- 57:18Speaker 1: like when I go up to the Midwest, I think,
- 57:20Speaker 1: man um it kind of like, for for instance, when
- 57:24Speaker 1: I went to Iowa, we went in late October because
- 57:27Speaker 1: we saw some weather patterns coming in in twenty nineteen,
- 57:30Speaker 1: and it's snowed twice while we're on that trip. Um,
- 57:33Speaker 1: it was real slow for much of that trip, like
- 57:36Speaker 1: a seven or eight day trip, and when the snow
- 57:39Speaker 1: came in and we just saw just bust loose, you know.
- 57:42Speaker 1: But like that was also um October twenty nine or
- 57:46Speaker 1: something like that. So, um, you know, I think that, uh,
- 57:51Speaker 1: those dates are a lot more a lot more important.
- 57:54Speaker 1: I guess, really what when it comes to rut action
- 57:57Speaker 1: and stuff like that here in Texas at East, UM,
- 58:01Speaker 1: what determines that more than anything is just when the
- 58:03Speaker 1: heat stops, you know, and and the deer are comfortable
- 58:07Speaker 1: running around more than anything. I feel like a lot
- 58:09Speaker 1: of times, I think something that we've kind of keyed
- 58:11Speaker 1: on in the last year really is understanding the pre
- 58:15Speaker 1: rut phase that happens in the Midwest, because you killed
- 58:19Speaker 1: a deer on that specific uh tactic in October last
- 58:24Speaker 1: year in Illinois, whereas here where we live, and I'm
- 58:29Speaker 1: I don't mean to say that it doesn't happen, but
- 58:31Speaker 1: I just have not learned enough to understand, uh that
- 58:37Speaker 1: there's anything in front of like a Texas rut outside
- 58:41Speaker 1: of just deer doing complete pre rut stuff. I might
- 58:45Speaker 1: be making sense, but like, for instance, we saw a
- 58:48Speaker 1: cold front coming and you went to Illinois and killed
- 58:51Speaker 1: a deer over a scrape on October twenty three, like
- 58:54Speaker 1: within the first two hours of hunting, like we knew
- 58:57Speaker 1: it was gonna happen. And in Texas, UM, you knew.
- 59:00Speaker 1: I think you knew that was gonna happen. Did you
- 59:04Speaker 1: really feel like that was gonna Like? I'm curious though, because,
- 59:08Speaker 1: let me tell you, UH plays the ultimate always I'm optimistic.
- 59:13Speaker 1: So the culfront actually hit here before it hits uh
- 59:18Speaker 1: where Tyler was because I'd stay here and work. Tyler
- 59:20Speaker 1: went up. I had a a nine month old at
- 59:24Speaker 1: the time, so actually I was babysitting. I wasn't work
- 59:26Speaker 1: and so I had I had the kids, so I
- 59:27Speaker 1: couldn't go. Tyler went up there in the cold front
- 59:30Speaker 1: here and I called him at about twelve fiars, like, dude,
- 59:32Speaker 1: it's happening. You're gonna kill a giant. You know. We
- 59:35Speaker 1: love to hype like that. You know, it's fun. I
- 59:38Speaker 1: wasn't so sure. Tyler is a he's a realist, which
- 59:42Speaker 1: is probably a good place to be. But yeah, you're aptimistic.
- 59:45Speaker 1: I don't want to give you. I don't want to
- 59:46Speaker 1: I'm learning to be yeah. Right, But so I I
- 59:49Speaker 1: felt really good about it. And it was all about
- 59:52Speaker 1: truck camera data, right. We had um actually gone up
- 59:55Speaker 1: there in the summer and scouted some and UH found
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: um what we would refer to as a hubscrape like
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: a place that is perennial and even using the summertime,
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: like the looking branches getting hit, right, So we we
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: knew it was a great place to hang a camera.
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: Hung a camera there fallow the trail camera data and
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: kind of tracked you know, what bucks were around, and
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: you know, as they moved closer to you know, having
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: day activity. That's kind of when we knew it was
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: time to get going. And then you made the move
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: to go, right, Yeah, I mean one thing that was
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: that I liked a lot is that the cold front
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: came in during the day, so, uh, it gave me
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: some time to or it gave me the opportunity to
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: walk in in daylight for the afternoon hunt, as opposed
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: to walking in in the dark and trying to figure
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: out which tree to hang in. And you chose and
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: you you got there though ahead of that, right, I mean,
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: if I remember you, you just drove around that morning
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: and and shows not to hunt so as not to
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: blindly busting right exactly. Yeah, I figured I would just
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: look kind of uh finding a you know plan B
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: as well, and case I went in there and messed
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: it up or something. But like, um, looking for I
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: was just looking for a couple of things I was
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: looking for. I was driving around, is I was marking
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: um different types of eggs, so bean, corn, beans, corn, uh,
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: and wheat, and that was what was in that area.
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: And I was just marking that to know, UM, to
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: see what deer were feeding in what type of agriculture
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: and UM. I think at the time I was planning
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: on if I had to hunt somewhere else hunting beans
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: as opposed to corn um at the time because the
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: corn hadn't been cut or something like that maybe. But yeah,
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: I just drove around because I was like, man, the
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: coul friends coming in about you know, one pm, I
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: think that day, so it'd be better for me to
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: go in with a good wind for one, UM, for
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: my access and everything, even for hunting the scrape obviously,
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: but um and then also that wind is noise cover
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: and stuff like that too. So I'm you know, like
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: we I was being aggressive but at the same time
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: playing just playing a little bit concerned pervative, so that um,
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: you know, I it just was it was working to
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: where like this was this should work, you know, like
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: all the variables line up if we just do it
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: right here. So let's just be patient and wait when
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: we call that something knowledgeably aggressive, knowledgeably that's what we've
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: been saying lately at least. Yeah, so you know, and
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: you probably know this two mark and you can probably
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: speak to it some. But like when you go on
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: these out of state trips, you you have a set
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: schedule and it's a lot different of a mentality than
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: being you know, near your home turf and having a
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: season long you know, so you have kind of a
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: internal ticker that's always going off and telling you, hey,
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: three days, hey, two and a half hunts, you know,
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: three more sets, whatever it might be. So you have
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: to um meteor that you have to you the way
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: we approach things, uh. And I hate to say we
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: because we're individuals, but you know, are hunting styles fit
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: together really nicely. But um we uh, we approach things
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: with knowledgeable aggression. So like we make the most aggressive
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: move that we can make make sense in our heads,
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: you know, Uh, we hardly ever just bust off in
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: there and just see what happens, you know what I mean.
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: It's just not the way, not the way we do things.
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: You know, we don't do a lot of observation sits
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: you know, but like if the wind is completely wrong,
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: we're gonna find somewhere else to hunt because we might
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: be able to kill something in a different spot. Or
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: if the wind is a just off wind, we can't
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: really get where we want to be. We're gonna as
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: close as we can without you know, bumping the deer
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: that way. Like just entire situation, right, You just decided
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: to drive around because you knew you could gather intel
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: that would help you maybe the next day. But you
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: knew that evening was going to be an A plus sit.
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: So there's no reason to go take a C minus
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: sit in the morning when you know you're gonna have
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: a plus in the evening in the same location. I
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: think it's important also to note that, like when we
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: go out of state a lot of times, we don't
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: have a target deer most of the time. So you know,
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: if you had a target deer in mind, you'd want
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: to be a lot more conservative than what we're talking
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: about probably right now, you know, And I think you
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: know that as well as anybody because you've hunted some
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: definitely lots of targets over the years, you know, which
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: is cool. And I'm sure you're also a little bit
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: irritated at the time. There's pros and cons. Yeah. Um
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: so that Illinois hunt that was public land, right, yes, sir.
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: So My question then is how how did hunting pressure
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: factor into this at all? Like? Why why was that
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: huge eight pointer in there? And there was another nice
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: buck I think that came in store at the same
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: time when you had that buck in underneath you and
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: there was some other little buck that came and hit
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: that scrape and you had trail camera videos of this
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: big wide buck. Why was this spot such a honey hoole?
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: Why weren't there other people and they're doing the same
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: Darren thing you were trying to do. I can make
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: some hypothesis as to why. I don't know for sure
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: because this is the first year we hunted that place.
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: Um we I think for one, um Casey is built
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: like a hog a little bit, and so uh it's
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: a clarified um. He does not mind going through brush
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: and just getting ticks on him and stuff like that,
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: you know, like he just he'll just bust through anything,
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: you know, So you just at front and then just
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: thall behind. That's it. And so he just eats spiderwebs
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: and stuff and Uh he found. Yes, yeah, you do,
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: Uh for sure. Um, he's awesome, awesome. But anyway, we
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: we're going through kind of just making this pass, you know,
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: on this property and kind of really skirting a big
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: agg field that ended up being a cut wheat field
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: in the summer, so it was kind of like not
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: a whole lot of benefit at the time, but we
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: were in there, so we went, we're finding some rubs
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: and stuff. Well he finds his scrape, and um, we
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: realized that it's being it's being used, you know. And
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: I think that this scrape was in a spot that
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: you know, Casey found because he's a fullback, you know,
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: like and dudes just don't want to go busting through
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: brush and that kind of thing. So I think that
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: there's an aspect that this scrape hadn't really been found
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: by anybody yet. Um. And it's also set in kind
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: of a um I don't know, Uh, the spot wasn't
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: like when you look at maps of this place, Um,
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: it's a lot of acreage, and you know, I don't
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: think that you would pick this spot out of all
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: the spots that you you would find on this you know,
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: because it's just not it's mostly agg fields. Um, it's
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: kind of an out of the way, um little strip
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: in between agg fields. And you know it's far enough
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: in as well. Um, you know it was there's a
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: little bit of elevation, at least for us, maybe not
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: for other people, but um, you're kind of walking up
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: and down a little bit and kind of some ridge
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: ridges and hills and stuff. And it's about six it's
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: like six hundred fifty yards I think is when I
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: measured at straight line, you know, so it's getting close
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: to that half mile distance. Um. And for a lot
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: of guy is man when you're talking about you know,
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: early season kind of warm, I don't think they're wanting
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: to walk in too far and get after it too
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: hard until the run a lot of times. So I
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: don't know that maybe those are some of the factors
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: that led to nobody having discovered this. Yet there's something
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: else that I know you've mentioned the past, um, is
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: that you had the flexibility to actually hit up there
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: and do this hunt on a weekday, whereas especially in October,
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: you know, guys are using their rutcation dates in November.
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: The only opportunity they have to really go in October
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: is on weekends. You shot the steer on a Friday, Thursday, Thursday.
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: I shot him on Thursday, and I drove around the
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: next day on Friday because I had a buddy that
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: was up there hunting with me, and um, I was
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: just driving looking fields for him, you know. And there
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: was a lot more people Friday afternoon than there was,
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: you know, when I hunted on Thursday. So definitely it
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: was a difference. You know. That's a great point. So
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: what about another example for you? For you, Casey, you
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: were hunting public lamb buck and I think it was Kansas.
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: Is that where you killed your big big buck last year?
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: Is that question? Is it? Maybe it's purposeful. He didn't
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: label it, so if you don't want to tell, you
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: don't have to. It was Kansas. It was in Kansas.
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: It looked like a Kansas type of hunt. Uh. So
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: you were you were hiking in there and you were
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: saying that your head into this spot that looked good
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: or something, and then you'd pass some ladder stands on
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: your way in and the sign was actually getting worse.
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: But for some reason you picked up this spot, uh,
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: and you end up having this great, big, old, tight,
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: tall ten point giant come in YadA, YadA YadA and
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: killed him. Awesome. Why was he in there? Why weren't
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: other hunters in that spot mucking that thing up? Why
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: did that work out from a hunting pressure, that's the standpoint.
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: That's that's a good question. I don't say that sarcastically
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: as I mean that. Uh, you know, and it sounds
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: like you watched that video, so thanks for watching, man,
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: But that was only on that whole hunt, you know. So, Um,
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: I'd see a possum about four thirty and then of
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: like giving in it, you know. So it's tough, and
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: I was the whole time. I'm Mr Optimist is even
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: second guessing himself, you know, like it's just right deal.
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: But I would tell you, um the reason. Uh and
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: and this is counterintuitive to the advice I would give
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: on a normal basis, So I guess you have to
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: kind of interpret this how you will. But um, I
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: looked at the map and got a broader picture, and
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: I knew by the way, dear act in that area
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: is you know, kind of Western Midwest stuff. Is that? Um?
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: You know, food sources are everything because it's arid, right,
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: so when you're wheat, they live and die by it.
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: Out there, right, So I knew being close to that
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: winter wheat is going to be more important because I
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: killed that dear on November twenty three, okay, which is
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: still definitely within the month of November. So deer or
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: rutton and even on beyond that, you know, I think that, um, yeah,
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: rut dates matter, but um if bucks or anything like people,
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: they have things on their mind a lot of times,
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: you know, so uh, But at the same time, I
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: had to interpret the situation. Uh what matters more this
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: sign that I'm seeing or that food source that's over there,
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: And I think that what was going on is that, um,
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: that buck was cruising for late Estrus does, and all
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: the sign I was seeing on the way in was
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: rutt sign. And that's all well and good if it's
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: November eight and they're just in their raging, But that
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: deer is cruising for for late November does, and those
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: does are by all means going to that winter wheat
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: at that point, that is where they're gonna live. You know,
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: they're gonna go over there and eat. Now. I didn't
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: see any that evening, but I couldn't see all the
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: you know, I'm on public and you just can't see
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: all the egg field, right, but I think that's what
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: he was doing. I think that he was cruising up
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: and down the thicker habitat um waiting or trying to
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: smell a late estres dough and uh, in that moment,
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: I made a decision that helps me inevitably kill that buck.
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: Was it the right decision ten times out of out
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: of ten? Maybe not? But um, it did work out
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: that time. You know. I think that it's funny. Um,
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: You hear a lot of people talk about making good
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: choices and making right decisions, and even those guys are
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: only making the right choice two percent of the time,
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: you know, and most of us are it will do
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: will do good to you know bad? You know barely,
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: you know, the tenth of a percent or whatever it
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: might be. You know. So, But in that scenario, I
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: think what really helped was to instead of zoom in
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: and try to find specific trails, which I did that
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: as well. I found a that if you watch that
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: video where the deer ends up jumping the fence onto
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: private Um, all right, that was the trail that I
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: had seen on the map and decided that would be
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: a good place to set up because it was kind
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: of in a corner of a winter wheat field. Um,
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: but you know, on the broader picture, it was the
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: idea of where was the best food within a couple
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: of square miles and that's where it was. So h yeah,
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: I think that was kind of what led to that deal.
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: As a heck of a buck. That certainly was ever
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: And uh I love it because uh I don't have
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: a lot of mounts. That's that's actually the first year
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: i've ever its shoulder mounted. And M really happy with it.
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: You know, it's just beautiful to be able to have
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: something like that to hang in your house. And I've
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: got a year and a half old and We're sitting
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: the recliner and we'll be rocking or whatever and he'll
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: point up and go, d you know, No, it's just
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: the coolest thing. You know. I know you're a fellow,
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: you kind of understand. Man, It's it's awesome. Yes, that's
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: the best. Uh So I want to I'm gonna pose something,
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: and I want to make sure you guys both know
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: this is a safe space, all right. You're in the
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: trust tree, and and any answers to these questions cannot
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: this cannot be used against you. Okay, So whatever you're
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: about to tell me cannot be used against you or
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: held against you anyway. All right, you both understand, Yes, sir,
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: we're with you, so we'll give I'm gonna throw the
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: fullback under the bus first, Oksey, you're up first. All right,
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: let's go big. If there was one thing that Tyler
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: could do to be a better deer hunter, Like if
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: you could change one thing, like right now, tell me
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: you gotta do this different, you gotta do this better,
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: you gotta fix this thing you keep screwing up. What's
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: that one thing it would be that you would tell Tyler?
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: Um you sure this is a trust and be detailed detailed? Yeah, man,
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: you might have should have prefaced me a little bit
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: on this because we might have already ironed all this out.
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: You know, we've been hunting together like four or five years.
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: So um no, but I can think about it. Um so. Uh.
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: Tyler is a very pensive person. He spends a lot
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: of time thinking about things. Uh, and this is why
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: we hunt together. Well, I don't. I I am a
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: go with your gut, make observed A I process things
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: very fast. That's not always a good thing though. Um.
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: But this is about Tyler. It's not about me right
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: about my faults. So Tyler sometimes will get a little
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: bogged down in a decision when uh, and this isn't
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: often right, but that that is something that can affect
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: his hunt. And I think you probably agree, Um, it's
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: it's in Um. Sometimes it's time to just be an
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: Indian and make some choices and go after it. Which
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: it sounds very cliche, but there there are times like that,
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: like you just have to live and buy, live and
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: die by the situation, you know. And I would say that, Um,
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: Tyler has worked on that and is is really good
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: at it now, but that's still something that you you
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: struggle with. He's she's not in his head. He's just
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: trying to think about something mean to say me. Alright, yeah,
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: so now let's let's flip it around. How do you
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: feel about the description. I think it's hilarious because the
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: first thing that the first thing I was thinking is
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: Casey settles sometimes with a spot and it worked out
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: in Kansas, you know what I mean? But like, um,
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: I will stand So I actually killed a buck. I
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: haven't released the video yet, but um, I killed a
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: buck on public and Kansas as well this past year
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: and I, UM, I walked past a bunch of good
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: sign and then walked back to it. And maybe I
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: learned something from Casey's hunt. I don't know because I
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: killed this year late late and um in the late season. Yeah,
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: and so UM, I walked past this spot and got
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: in there and started thinking. And the wind wasn't like
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: I wanted it, and like so many things, you know,
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: just analyzing everything, and I'm I'm thinking, and like if
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: a camera dude was with me at the time, he
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: would have been thinking I was crazy. You know, I'm
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: just sitting there staring at the ground pretty much thinking. Know. Yes,
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: I know your podcast a lot, so uh, you know
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: we've been listeners, are you you for a long time?
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: You know you've you've had a podcast for a long time,
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: and you you have a great product, um, And we've
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: kind of drawn some similarities in your personality and Tyler personalities.
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: You are a lot of lots of things. UM. So
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: it sounds like a bunch of some good stuff. Tyler.
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: I really like what you're describing here. Yeah, you think
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: Casey's terrible? Were going to ask him the same questions, so, UM,
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: I would say, like you know me, I'm sitting there thinking,
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: thinking thing and I finally go back to the better
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: sign that I saw found. I knew that looking on
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: on the map that um there was a creek crossing
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: there or whatever. So I put all this stuff together
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: and think about it, and a lot of times I'll
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: get to the spot and I'll spend another twenty minutes
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: thinking about which tree I need to be in, you know,
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: And Casey's just like he just let's do that, you know.
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: And it's and like he said, like, I think that
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: that balances me out pretty well when we're hunting together. Um,
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: you know, both of those characteristics. So like, it was
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: just hilarious because the first thing I thought before he
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: ever answered was that sometimes he is just like, oh, yeah,
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: this is gonna work. We're gonna kill you, which is
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: funny because um, uh, I feel like, uh, Tyler is
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: never the guy who would like leave home without his bow.
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: And that is a dent. Was it two years ago?
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: I don't remember. One year I was glassing a place.
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: We were in separate areas, and uh, I got out.
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: I thought I was gonna make a stalk on do
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: your decided not to got back in the truck put
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: it reversed and then saw my bow in the reverse camera.
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: I was about to run it over right. And that's
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: just Tyler would never be moving fast enough for that
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: to happen, you know. That's and that's that's the difference
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: of us. And I think that honestly, man, Like, Um,
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: there is a very much a a loner mentality or
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: a a lifestyle or mantra that people have in white
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: tail hunting specifically. Um, And I think that not that
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: some people don't function will and I'm not criticizing them,
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: but I don't want to understate the importance that I
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: feel having a quality hunting partner, not just buddy, but
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: just somebody that you really can rely on and that
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: kind of helps you make better decisions and helps you
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: go on hunts, and just somebody to really deep dive
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: in the thought process with, you know. Like that's just
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: it's been valuable for Tyler and Eyes is like we've
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: you know, become closer and better friends and hunting partners
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: that we can just bounce these ideas off of each other.
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: And UM, I can't tell you how many times I
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: was like, oh, man, look at the spot on the map.
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: You know, at like eleven PM or whatever one lad
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: been and Tyler was like, yeah, but what about your
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: Like how are you gonna access it? And I'm like, oh,
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: that's right. Yeah, there's like really hardly any way to
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: get there, you know, but uh yeah, I really see
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: a lot of value in that for sure. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: So I gotta be fair. Uh and and give you
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: a chance to send a blow my way. You've heard
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: the wire Dump podcast over the years. You you've maybe
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: heard me discuss what I do and how I do
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: things enough times that something has stood out to you
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: where he said, mark you want Have you ever screamed
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: at the radio and said just stop doing that or
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: do this? Is there anything that you need to get
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: off your chest? Now? This is your chance we both
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: get to go right. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah you can
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: both if there's that many. Man, you seem like a
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: sand guy, and I don't want to like just you know,
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: teach your horn for you anything, but um I would
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: say I have a funny one and then actually a
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: hunting one as well. Uh if it's safe space, right,
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: safe space? Yes, I think as Texans when you say
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: balance and challenge or egg, I gotta tell you the
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: story you might know this guy. Uh hes he works
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: with you. Yeah, so, uh, Garrett Long, Garrett Long. We
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: were about to eat supper with him one time and
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: he was talking about egg fields and I literally had
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: no idea what he's talking about. It's you know, egg
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: like with a but I mean I had the blankets
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: look at my face and Tyler. Tyler saw me and
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: had to tell me he's talking about, you know, like agriculture.
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: But do we really like that? I'll over emphasized it
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: for sure. Field hag field. Yeah, that's good. Yeah, that's good.
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: And I don't keep working on that and you need
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: to beat you ye, for sure. But it's just funny
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: as a Southern like it sticks out for sure. But
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: and I think you've addressed this too, man, and I
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: appreciate that. But I think that, um, you've struggled with
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: pre shot buck fever. So yeah, and I think and
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: I don't know because I haven't hunted with you, um,
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: but I think that you've kind of addressed that. But
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: I think you'd recognize that that's a problem you've had two,
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: Is that right? Yeah? Definitely definitely something I struggled with
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: and had my moments and work in progress still right,
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: I mean always. I mean it's cool to get excited, man,
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: you know, like that's not It's not a bad thing
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: by any means, you know, but uh, it just you
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: gotta make sure it doesn't impede um you in your goal.
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: You know, absolutely absolutely what's next? Uh if I had to,
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: if I do I have to say one? You know
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: you don't have to, but if something, if something came
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: to mind, you couldn't time to throw me into the
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: display to Actually you're the only way to meeting Yeah,
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: I was. I was just wondering if I had to
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: say one, because there's a lot of them. You can
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: you can, you can set it out, or we can
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: we can just move on. Yeah, let's let's move on. Man.
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: I I thank you. Okay, Casey's gonna here we go. Uh,
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: I would say, uh kind of in the same boat
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: as me. Sometimes what Casey thought about me, at least
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: as the analysis print paralysis, UM, I thought, you know,
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: just sometimes just like you know, you obviously this stuff
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: is such a passion for you, man, and and you've
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: been doing it for so long. You just you know,
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: you want to make big decisions and make them right.
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: And uh, sometimes uh, that's a tough thing to do, man,
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: because there's so many variables and you have time. It's
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: not like, you know, like in a football game, you
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: just kind of like either you throw it or you don't,
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: and it's either picked off or it gets caught for
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: touchdown ors and in complete, you know. So it's a
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: little different with deer hunting. You you make most of
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: the time until the bucks right in front of you.
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: You're making decisions that you kind of have some time
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: to make, you know. I wonder if it would be
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: this is this is the only a weird nerd like
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: me would ever think of this. But I wonder if
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: you put like a self imposed time restriction on your decisions.
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: So it's like every time I got to spotting, like
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: I gotta pick a tree, and I might sit there
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: and do what you're talking about, Tyler, and like debate
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: back and forth this and that. I need to just
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: have like a an app ready to go on my
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: phone at all times. Okay, decision time, and I hit
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: that button. I've got five minutes and I have to
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: make a decision in those five minutes. I wonder if
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: that would help. The issue would be once you get
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: into your tree, you sit there for hours thinking about
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: how dumb you are. Decision very very true, a lot
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: of self loving Yeah exactly. Yeah, but uh, Mark, I
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: do think that after a mean to you, it's probably
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: good for us to be nice to you. Um. I
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: think what's cool is that like even through your you know,
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: your media outlets that you have it, we have seen
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: the growth in the change you know, you've you've taken
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: steps and done things to address things that you've had
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: a hard time with, you know, And I think that
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: all of us, um, self evaluation is huge man. Like,
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: as a hunter, you have to be able to self evaluate.
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: You have to be able to not just leave a
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: hunt and say, well I didn't get one. You need
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: you know? Why is the question? Yes? Why? And this
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: is all relative, right, Like, if your goal is to
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: go out and just have an opportunity to go hunting,
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: then maybe you don't need to do that. But if
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: your if your goal is to go out and become
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: a better hunter, then I think that, uh, you know,
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: for sure, you need to be able to self evaluate,
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: um and not be too proud to know your own flaws. Yeah.
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: Another thing that I like about you, Mark is and
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: I'm really just have I appreciative of what you do
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: and that you have a big voice, because I think
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: that you're very solid um solidly in the middle, like
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: understanding of different uh mentalities and different thoughts in different
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: ways of hunting, and obviously a proponent of conservation man,
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: and just you know, getting people involved, um, you know,
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: speaking to the experts and speaking to the guys who
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: also you know, are new to this. But I really
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: appreciate and I'm glad that you have a big voice
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: because uh, you do a really good job. Man. I
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: do appreciate you guys saying that. And I didn't I
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: didn't pay him to say this. Guys, everyone else listening,
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: this wasn't pretty planned. You can yeah you can't. Could
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: we have PayPal take a sound clip? And uh and
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: on that note, it is time to wrap it up.
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: So where where can people go to see all the
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: stuff you guys are doing. It's uh, it's good stuff.
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: I've enjoyed it, and I'm glad we've got to have
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: this conversation. So everyone that's listening to this and enjoyed
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: it is gonna want to go see these big giant
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: bucks that you're finding out there and secretly chasing down
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: in secret states. So what where can they find it? Yeah? Sure, man,
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: so um our podcast is the Element Podcast, and that's
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: kind of uh uh similar to a lot of podcasts
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: where you have a weekly show and then we have
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: some special things we do that are more intensive when
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: it comes to like map scouting or we do have
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: a false series called Big Bug Breakdowns where we do
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: storytype stuff. But hopefully you'll be on that this year. Man,
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: if you shoot a big buck, we'll have you on.
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: Sign me up. Yeah. And then uh, we have you
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: know the social media outlets that everyone hates to love,
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: you know, Facebook, Instagram. All that is the Element Wild
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: dot com. Funny enough, the Element was taken, so we
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: had to add the Wild on the then and then yeah,
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: the website, yeah, the the Element Wild dot com is
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: is our You're at the Element Wild. I guess I
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: got that. Yeah, yeah, sorry, it's all yeah, unfortunately the
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: Element Wild because we don't have twenty grand to spend
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: on the Element dot com, you know. Yeah, and then uh,
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: our YouTube channel, Tyler is actually our master YouTube expert.
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: He's a he's a great video editor and does a
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: really good job on that. So if you just search
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: the Element or the Element Hunting on YouTube. You'll be
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: able to find all the hunts that we've discussed today
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: and some others as well. I would advise not going
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: back too far because it gets real weird. I feel
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: the same way about my old stuff too. Yeah, thank
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: you guys for taking the time to chat this is
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: This has been fun, and uh, I definitely want to
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: circle back with you after the season or mid season
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: or something and see how all this is going for you. Sure, absolutely,
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: Mark sounds great, man. I hope you have a great
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: dear Season'd appreciate it. Right back at you, all right,
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: And that's a rap for us today. Definitely check out
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: what these guys are doing on YouTube, check out their podcast.
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: It's all good stuff, lots to learn from. So until
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: next time, appreciate your listening. Best of luck. If you've
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: got a hunting trip coming on up, if you're heading
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: out to go chase Western critters, or have an early
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: season late August or early September opener for white tails,
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: shoot straight, have fun. It's here. The good stuff has arrived.
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: One white tail season is kicking off and I couldn't
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: be more excited. So good luck out there, have fun,
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: and until next UM, stay wired to hung MHM
