- 1:37This is Tony Ricardo. Oh, I've been hoping to get in touch with
- 1:40it. You was that your polite threat to kill me if I don't leave
- 1:44Carol sharp alogn Yeah, I received it, and I have a sneaking suspicion
- 1:47the police department might be interested in Oh please, I guess they acted a
- 1:52bit hastily. Perhaps you let me talk to me. You want to take
- 1:55the threat back that still stands, then you don't leave me much choice.
- 2:00Talk to me first. Believe me. You won't be sorry, but I
- 2:02might be dead. Is that it I want to see? You can't do
- 2:06it now? But where can I reach you? Sunrise three? Okay?
- 2:10Meantime, don't get trigger happy? Tonight and every weekday night Bob Bailey in
- 2:23the transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action Packed Expense Account America's Fabulous freelance
- 2:29Insurance Investigator US truly Johnny Dollar. Expense account submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar,
- 2:47location, New York City to the Universal Adjustment Bureau, Hertford, Connecticut.
- 2:53Following is an accounting of expenditures during my investigation of the matter of the
- 2:55medium well done Expencer con adem seven eighty five cents cav fair from the bell
- 3:05Towers to the eighteenth Precinct Station and Sergeant Randy Singer. So, yeah,
- 3:09I meant to Carol's sharp huh yep, I put on an act that would
- 3:13have done credit to the theater. Gil told her she looked exactly like a
- 3:15girl I dreamed about as a kid, a girl named Carol. Oh no,
- 3:19she swallowed it. Not only that, but she gave me a lecture
- 3:22on vertical dreams and allied psychic phenomenon. You deserve an oscar. Also,
- 3:27she wants me to go with her and see this, Madam MORGANA MORGANA oh
- 3:30good? When to well, you're not figuring on skipping tonight's sayands a hold
- 3:32on, out of bits. I want to find out what this stuff is
- 3:35all about, so I'll be prepared for tomorrow. This dame you have lined
- 3:39up pretty good. She's got a big following ready to go. Oh what
- 3:43a minute? You said you have the file on Tony Ricardo. Oh yeah,
- 3:46yeah, I was waiting for you, eh. Anthony Ricardo alias Ricky
- 3:51Marino, alias Tony the Tip. Here's his picture. Height five nine,
- 3:55weight one seventy two eyes, brown hair, bars, grace expected member of
- 4:00the Duchy's spurling outfit. Twelve Arettsviction started as a rum runner back. This
- 4:05is Tony Riccardo. It's the guy I would have sworn. The man I
- 4:10talked over the phone was in his twenties, late twenties and more. You
- 4:13talked to him after leaving an unpleasant little note under my door at the towers.
- 4:16He called me on the phone and what kind of note? Oh,
- 4:18nothing, particularly, just a gentle suggestion I lay off Carol sharp threat.
- 4:23Huh, still got it. But I'm sure that voice couldn't have come from
- 4:26this old Geesey and well, frankly, I kind of wondered about the sharp
- 4:29girl being interested in him, even though the final does show he's always surrounded
- 4:31himself with a bunch of young onesy. You know, he's probably handed out
- 4:34more mink coach. Oh, Johnny, you wait a minute, Old Tony's
- 4:38got a couple of kids here. Angela goes under the name of Angela Richards.
- 4:44At least she used that name at Brentmark, Brent Moore and Sarah Lawrence
- 4:46College at Bronxville, and the old boy tried to keep the stigma of his
- 4:50passed away from her. I guess, hey, I see I had to
- 4:55a doctor over in Hackensack, respectable housewife. Mm hmm, Oh what about
- 5:00the other Anthony Junior, aged twenty six. That was last year. Let's
- 5:05see that makes him twenty seven now Rutgers University class. Not much, gentlemen,
- 5:12unless I must my guess, he's a chip off the old block.
- 5:15Are you know where I can find him? All I have is his phone
- 5:17under what is it? Wait'll I see him? Talk to him? That
- 5:21may be too late, is what I think he is? Why not ask
- 5:25this medium about him tonight? Yeah? That? Hey, come on,
- 5:28we're late. Let's go alright. I'm eight a dollar twenty cab to an
- 5:35old brown stone house somewhere over in the west forties, way west, in
- 5:40a district that had seen better days. We were greeted at the door by
- 5:44a tall, gray haired, old gentleman dressed in black except his white gloves
- 5:47that somehow reminded me of a pall ber. Come in, mister Singer and
- 5:53mister Dollar Terrible is about to begin? Psychometry? Is the mood this evening?
- 6:00Follow? Please? How do you know our names? I had to
- 6:02give them to him when I made the appointment. What's this psychometry? Press?
- 6:10Ah? Music gives me the creeps? Yeah? Into the temple please
- 6:15and be seated. The temple turned out to be an old dining room a
- 6:20bare wooden floor, heavy drapes over the windows, and as nearly as I
- 6:24could see, a bunch of chairs around in the circle, fill with people.
- 6:28The sockets in the ancient chandelier that hung from the ceiling had red bulbs
- 6:30in them that barely glowed. We could highly see a thing, although I'm
- 6:34sure the light went up very slightly when we made our entrance, and then
- 6:38down again, as though somebody was controlling it with a rheostat. Our eyes
- 6:42were almost used to the semidarkness by the time we seated ourselves in the circle.
- 6:46Nobody spoke, and the weird music from that scratchy record was beginning to
- 6:49get on my nerves or put me to sleep or something. I'm not quite
- 6:54sure what. Then suddenly there was a flash of light and a puff of
- 6:58smoke, and so help me what the same Brandish client is a party greeting
- 7:08greetings, friends of the unknown, friends of the mystics of Boat and the
- 7:14Indian Boy, and the seventh son of a seventh son of Harrish New the
- 7:19Mighty. And then she stood in the center of the circle where the flash
- 7:24had gone off. Are we all in the moon? She stood there,
- 7:27draped and what looked, even in the dim light, what looked like a
- 7:30slightly soiled bed sheet pulled in around her ample middle with a hunk of coarse
- 7:33rope. She wore a sort of turban or maybe it was just an old
- 7:38dish towel wrapped around her head. A faint older of gin pervaded the room.
- 7:42I guess her feet were bare, for she made no noise as she
- 7:45walked slowly around the circle, holding on a shallow metal tray, taking a
- 7:47collection. So soon, I wondered, each of you, place upon the
- 7:53tray some object very close to you, something you had had a long long
- 7:59time that has become a part of you. You'll get it back. And
- 8:03if the spirits are with us, and there are no dissenting minds among us,
- 8:09if Botan, the Indian boy from the world beyond, is willing to
- 8:13act as our control, we shall learn many strange things this night. Place
- 8:22something close to you upon the train, Oh, wullis Watson. You must
- 8:28not speak, but keep the moos, keep the mood. Are we all
- 8:35in the moods? Yes? Sweet and Now, dear friends, while I
- 8:43editate and establish contact with the spirit world, Henningway will pass among you.
- 8:50For the tiny assurance that you join us in all sincerity. Now join hands
- 8:58to create the flux that will join our thoughts and minds and hearts and open
- 9:05the doors to enlightenment for all of us. Five dollars photo, Are you
- 9:11with us? To no? Five dollars? Please? Botann will you answer
- 9:16us? Are you with us? Now? Is that Botan that answers our
- 9:22call? Oh, the little sister hyacin Ah, it is Phota, We
- 9:33may begin. I hold this ring, I feel the paramagnetic forces arising from
- 9:43it. This belongs to a businessman south of here. I seem to see
- 9:48clothing hanging in a large warehouse, and the sound of many machines, sewing
- 9:56machines, and many young ells working at the machine. One by one,
- 10:03she picked the objects off the tray, held them in her hand, and
- 10:05gave a kind of character reading with the owners. Occasionally, somebody in the
- 10:09circle would respond in a way that made it sound like she'd guess right.
- 10:13Other Times she'd just make with a lot of generalities that could apply to any
- 10:16one. Finally, she picked up my watch. This watch, I see
- 10:20tall buildings of stone and strange signs on them. I don't know what they
- 10:26mean. Try mutual universal adjustment, Brandy, And I see great chiefs of
- 10:37papers, carefully folded, and on each one it says policy policy. I
- 10:43don't understand unless insurance. Yes, it's fantastical. Way does she get STI
- 10:50wide with them? The watches from a young man, clever, energetic.
- 10:56I will have many things to tell him at another time, but he must
- 11:01see me again of them. And now this other object that lay beneath the
- 11:07watch, I see a police badge, the cops. Cops. Let me
- 11:15rated get out of here anyway, Clara, your filthy hands off me.
- 11:22You're not going anywhere until I have a talk with you. Anyway, ran
- 11:26On, I'm out of known. He wanted a pinch. There isn't going
- 11:28to be a pinch if you'll just shut up and stand still, iminine.
- 11:31I wasn't doing no harm on this officer. And all the money goes to
- 11:35charity. All right, all right, settle down? Where's the light switch?
- 11:37Got it ready? I'll never live this down now, Look office,
- 11:41you look, Clara Belle. All we wanted some answers is some questions,
- 11:45and you won't pinch me. And if you tell the truth, Johnny,
- 11:48Yeah, just now, did you know so much about me. It certainly
- 11:50wasn't from holding that watch. Okay, so it wasn't, though some there
- 11:56are who can do it that way that I've heard. Well, go on,
- 12:00no pinch, no pinch. Well, when your friend called to arranger
- 12:05being here tonight, Henningway, well he would walk out on me. Well,
- 12:09Henmingway asked where you come from? So we know if the spirits was
- 12:13propitious there? That's what we always say. And I told him Hartford,
- 12:18that's right. So what's Hartford insurance? If a client's in insurance? He
- 12:22responds, like you done? So I keep pushing it, and if he
- 12:26ain't well, at least he thinks I'd done pretty good by describing the place
- 12:28he comes from. Yeah, what about the clothing maker right at the beginning?
- 12:33Easy, he called from a hotel, So he calls the hotel back
- 12:35and gets his address. You told him he was from the south of here.
- 12:39Sure would buy in New Jersey. Only business down there, of any
- 12:43account is clothing and small farms. Where'd you find that? At State directory?
- 12:48Any library and anybody could see he was a businessman, not a farmer.
- 12:52Well, I'll be and hooking him that way tonight. You could have
- 12:54had him coming back as long as he could afford it him. Sure,
- 12:58if it hadn't been for you. Okay, Now what about the others?
- 13:01Some we get the dope on and some we guess that. But there's always
- 13:05enough good ones to keep going so easy. And yet I must confess she'd
- 13:11had me stop for a while. We talked with her a bit longer.
- 13:16Randy wanted to watch your step, and we left, took a taxi back
- 13:18to my hotel. Well, learn anything, I should hope to tell you?
- 13:26What are the church going spiritualists think of her kind? I hate him
- 13:28and I don't blame him. Are you still going to see Madam Morgan and
- 13:33MORGANA tomorrow night? Mm? Yeah, Well, mister, that one won't
- 13:39be so easy to expose if you can expose it. Johnny Dollar, this
- 14:01is Carol. Johnny, Oh, hello Carol. I've made the arrangements for
- 14:03us to go to the seance tonight with Madame MORGANA MORGANA good What time?
- 14:07Eight o'clock? Only it's across the river in New Jersey. Do you have
- 14:11dinner with me? I'd love to, but we'd better make it pretty early.
- 14:13Pick you have a new penthouse at six, I'll be waiting. Expense
- 14:26accounts submitted by special Investigator Johnny Dollar location, New York City to the Universal
- 14:31Adjustment Bureau, Hertford, Connecticut. Following is an accounting of expenditures. During
- 14:35my investigation of the matter of the medium well done, some pretty strong pressure
- 14:41was being put on Carol Sharp to change the beneficiaries of her one hundred and
- 14:45ten thousand dollars life policy. And she was very much under the influence of
- 14:48a psychic medium who insisted that she be named as one of the two new
- 14:52beneficiaries. The other was to be a Tony Ricardo, whose father made quite
- 14:56a record for himself in the bootlegging gangs Todays of the Roaring. I met
- 15:01him at Susan Palmer's oyster Bar over in Radio City. I must admit I
- 15:05was surprised that the sort of fellow he turned out to be. I guess
- 15:07it was a little well extreme to threatening you that way, mister Doller.
- 15:11That's putting it mild. But this whole spiritualism business and the whole it has
- 15:15on Carol, Wow, that hasn't me terribly concerned. You don't like spiritualists.
- 15:18I didn't say that you know just as well as I do. There
- 15:20are a great many fine honest spiritualistness city. But is any other fielder of
- 15:24frauds, racketeers? So I've heard it's not only true religions, but businesses,
- 15:28professions, anything. You sure? Sure? But I'll look here,
- 15:31Tony Dollar. I will not have you or anyone else leaving Carol on this
- 15:35medium who's already has such a hold on it. Do you understand? Pardon
- 15:39me, Tony? Your background is showing what I say, Come off with
- 15:41this kind of act won't work. What are you talking about? Do you
- 15:45think I don't know? Your one of the two. Carol wants to name
- 15:46his beneficies of her policy you in that medium. That's not my doing.
- 15:50Who's doing? Is it? Medium? Morgan? I'm organa. It's been
- 15:54taking Carroll's money by the hundreds a week after week. Now you've come along
- 15:58and encourage you and dolla. I tell you to stop it. Tony.
- 16:00Maybe that story you gave her about dreaming of her over and over when you
- 16:03were a kid and couldn't even have known about it was true, But I
- 16:06don't believe Tony, that was made up out of whole cloth. I still
- 16:11this funny decision to switch your policy around is the case I'm assigned to Wait
- 16:15a minute, Yes, I had to meet her somehow, so I use
- 16:19that device, knowing she might fall for it because of her implicit belief in
- 16:22such things. But now you're encouraging this whole thing. You're even gonna see
- 16:26this more guna moganna with her at night, because if she is a phony,
- 16:29it's the only way I can show this to Carol. Wow. I
- 16:33hope and pray that you can, mister Donna. Some of the best psychic
- 16:37investigators in the country have been stumped byre Ow are you gonna go about it?
- 16:41I won't know until I've seen her operate. Even then, I may
- 16:44not know. Or maybe this medium isn't a fraud. Oh come on,
- 16:47of course she is. But you can't prove it. But you or somebody
- 16:49must. Carol will change your policy and then turn up dead. We'll be
- 16:56easy, mister Dolla. Have the tendities sayances with Carol, many of them.
- 17:02There been times when I've almost been convinced myself. Wait, there's some
- 17:07more coffee. Please? No, no, no more for me. Thanks.
- 17:08You're gonna need it, Tony, because I'm gonna keep you here until
- 17:11you've told me every detail you can remember this Matam Morgan and organis seance procedure.
- 17:17Right, I help you all I can. You'd better. I'm still
- 17:19not forgetting that if I fall down on this job, you'll cut into Carrol's
- 17:22insurance for I need thirty thousand dollars. In spite of your sweet talk,
- 17:27I'll say this for Tony Ricardo. He was thorough and I began to believe
- 17:32that he was serious and his concerned for Carol. I had him twelve ten
- 17:34cents one fold. Call to Tommy Green. No, no, Johnny,
- 17:38no trouble at all in getting the rundown on Carrol's family that you has for
- 17:41keep talking. Apparently they're doing all right. They're in march On, PA.
- 17:45Neither the mother or two brothers will ever have to really get out and
- 17:48dig for a living. They're all man left and well set up. Eh.
- 17:51Yeah. One of the boys, Harold's turned out pretty well, works
- 17:55in some office over there, even though he doesn't really need to. What
- 17:56about the other boy? That'll be Day, The black sheep of the family
- 18:02travels with a fast crowd, tears around the country in a sports car that
- 18:04sort of thing. Oh right, now, he's somewhere here in New York
- 18:07just playing around. But Johnny, are you getting anywhere on this case?
- 18:12Yeah? Tell me, I think I am, especially after what you just
- 18:15told me. Item thirteen another phone call. It's time to Sergeant Randy Singer,
- 18:22eighteenth Precinct Headquarters. Yeah, Jenny, got a real easy one for
- 18:26you. What's that? Find A man name is David Sharp, home address
- 18:30mock Chunk, Pennsylvania, Chunk, Pennsylvania. Got it? Description none though
- 18:34he's probably in his twenties. Wow, it's not. And he's probably staying
- 18:37at a hotel here in the city. Well, yeah, but where what
- 18:40part of the city? Let me know when you find out wild you No,
- 18:42wait a minute. A Kida expense account Item fourteen, one hundred and
- 18:48six dollars eighty cents, and it includes cabs to several camera shops, one
- 18:51mini ature camera without an f two lens, a couple of rolls, a
- 18:53special film, some very special flash bobs, and a tiny flash holder.
- 18:57Item fifteen tex back to the towers to clean up and dress for my date
- 19:02with Carol. Then the phone rang, Jenny Dellen, we located David Sharp
- 19:07for you. Johnny, just dumb luck Now, who knows, Randy,
- 19:11maybe your psyche? I leave us and not half that stuff. Where is
- 19:14he found? I'm staying at the third hotel we call the ambar Ran Over
- 19:18on his fifty third Street, not two blocks from that palatial joint where you're
- 19:21staying. Is he there now? No? But he always comes in just
- 19:23for dinner time. He still haven't told me why you're interested in him.
- 19:26I'm not sure myself, but do me a favor. Would you like what
- 19:30when he shows up? Put a tail on him. I want to know
- 19:33where he goes, how long he stays, and when he comes back.
- 19:36But you won't say why, not until I'm sure I know why. Thanks
- 19:38Randy, But I haven't said that. Thanks why. Dinner with Carol could
- 19:45have been one of the pleasantest things in years, But I'm afraid I was
- 19:48preoccupied with matters at hand, and she with anticipation. She's promised to try
- 19:52to hear from Daddy again tonight. Oh, Johnny, I so want to
- 19:56speak to him again. Finally I signed the check, We hopped into a
- 20:00taxi and headed across the river to the Jersey side. We ended up at
- 20:03a rather plain but nice home somewhere on the outskirts of my guess at Union
- 20:07City. We were met at the door by a matron of about forty five,
- 20:11I should say, who looked like an ordinary respectable housewife, except perhaps
- 20:14for her quick, discerning eyes. Good evening, Carol, my dear,
- 20:18Oh, and you must be mister Johnny Dollar. Yes, Madame Morgan and
- 20:22morgana. Yes. Do come in and meet the others who are here to
- 20:26form the circle tonight. Thank you, Cherl, Thank you. Harold told
- 20:30me nothing about you except your verridical dreams of her. An amazing experience,
- 20:36isn't it. Perhaps you're really psyche? Oh? I doubt that, But
- 20:41all our friends thought my kid brother Richard was before he died a couple of
- 20:44years ago. Richard Richard. That name has been haunting me ever since Carol
- 20:49telephoned. You don't suppose what matter? Oh? No, of course.
- 20:56Not. Now Here in the parlor are the others who will be with us
- 21:00tonight. I present mister Johnny Dollar, Missus Dorothy Jess, mister John Crowd,
- 21:07mister Samuel Frolake, and of course you all know Carol. Sharp,
- 21:11Good evening. I see no reason why we shouldn't start the atmosphere has seemed
- 21:17almost electric tonight, very conducive to good contact with the shall we say,
- 21:22the nether world. And oh, oh, yes, you may smoke if
- 21:26you like, mister Dollar. We're very informal. Oh, I'm sorry,
- 21:32just sort of a nervous habit, I guess flicking this lighter. Oh incidentally,
- 21:36I I hope you tell these people of your dreams after we're finished it.
- 21:44M Oh, dear, the atmosphere is tense. We should begin right
- 21:49away, you will, yes, oh, turn on music. The six
- 21:59of us sat down on a small circle. On the floor were three long,
- 22:03slender metal trumpets, like Halloween horns, but made of thin metal,
- 22:07spaced about the center of the circle. In the subdued conversation of the next
- 22:11few minutes, I learned it was through these that the spirit voices would come
- 22:15to us, that they would rise in the air, and the voices would
- 22:18issue from them from time to time. They're in the pitch black rum.
- 22:22I snapped the cap of my lighter as a reminder of what it was.
- 22:26You mustn't light it downny, you know no danger. This one hasn't even
- 22:29got a fleam in it. I knew who we get some messages to I
- 22:33think we will, mister Philic, I have a feeling we will. I
- 22:37have that feeling too, very strongly. From what Madame told us, you
- 22:42must have definite psychopauis, mister Donna. That should be helpful. Wait,
- 22:47wait, the power is here. I feel it almost as though she were
- 22:51suffering. Physical were ready. The medium side and guessed, and we waited
- 22:56and waited. It's hard to describe the ten that comes of waiting that way
- 23:00in a completely darkened room, and it's easy to see how well the imagination
- 23:04will work the powers of suggestion. There was a slight sound one of the
- 23:11trumpets. I heard it move. Yes, yes, so did I.
- 23:18That means that there was seemed to move towards your girl. I hope so.
- 23:25Yes, Yes, I can feel it near near me, Father,
- 23:32Father, Carol, Carol, oh father, can you speak to me?
- 23:40There's so many things I wish to ask you. Yes, dear, yes,
- 23:45yes. It may not sound like much to tell, and believe me,
- 23:49this was impressive. The deathlike silence broken only by the faint voice of
- 23:53the trumpet, the whispered questions by Carol, an occasional sigh from the medium,
- 23:59and the shudder at my special camera, which I hope sounded enough like
- 24:02my lighter had sounded. Yes, Carol, always do the things I tell
- 24:10you do. You're a good girl, my darling, and you'll give me
- 24:15great happiness in this lonely this father, father, good Bye, goodbye Johnny.
- 24:33Do you see? Do you see? Because only he and I know
- 24:34the things we talked? Wait, I feel the trumpet is still near us
- 24:40since you John for you? Yes, Richard, Yes John, Dick,
- 24:53I've waited so long to speak to you, Dick, my brother. The
- 25:03brief conversation I carried on with my dead brother Richard was amazing of things in
- 25:08my childhood that I thought nobody else even knew about, personal, intimate things
- 25:14that could only be known to a brother, someone equally close. It was
- 25:18fantastic, amazing, or inspiring, except for one thing. I never had
- 25:23a brother. I didn't tell this to anyone. I played it straight and
- 25:29even stayed around and discussed my trumped up dreams after the seance. But I
- 25:33needed proof, and I couldn't wait to get back to New York to the
- 25:36police lab where I could develop the infrared film in my little camera. Now
- 25:53here's our star to tell you about the fine, intriguing episode of this week's
- 25:57story tomorrow the wind up and a bit of heartbreak for a very chasing girl,
- 26:03johann Us, Won't you Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. Yours Truly Johnny
- 26:11Dollar is starring Bob Bailey is transcribed in Hollywood. It is produced and directed
- 26:17by Jack Johnstone, who also wrote tonight's story. Be sure to join us
- 26:21tomorrow night at same time and station for the next exciting episode of Yours Truly
- 26:26Johnny Dollar. Roy Rowan speaking, welcome back. This hasn't been my favorite
- 26:47serial so far, but I love the sudden shift when the phony syc at
- 26:52in part three found the policeman's badge, both in her temperament as well as
- 26:57in the scene. But we'll see how things develop in the next serial and
- 27:04whether Johnny has the evidence to cook the medium well done or if he was
- 27:10mistaken. Also if listeners revolt over those the last two months. All right,
- 27:15but that will do it for today. We'll be back tomorrow with Nick
- 27:19Carter and join us on Friday for the conclusion of the matter of the Medium
- 27:26Well Done. In the meantime, Sandra comments to Box thirteen at Great Detectives
