Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So Elbow's done it, first Labor prime minister since Hawk,
- 0:03Speaker 1: to go back.
- 0:03Speaker 2: To back today, the Australian people have voted for Australian values,
- 0:12Speaker 2: for fairness, aspiration and opportunity for.
- 0:17Speaker 1: All, and he gets a bigger majority, which means that
- 0:22Speaker 1: you gave Paul, who told you about on Friday, was
- 0:23Speaker 1: pretty much on the money. The trivia on the opposition
- 0:26Speaker 1: benches grim. No federal opposition leader has lost their electric
- 0:31Speaker 1: seat during and Australian election general election until Dutton lost
- 0:36Speaker 1: his at the weekend. Le's the Yeomans Australia correspondent, Good.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Morning, Good morning Ryan.
- 0:42Speaker 1: It's never one thing that loses you an election or
- 0:44Speaker 1: wins it was it uncertainty about Trump, was dust and
- 0:48Speaker 1: crap on the campaign trail. I mean, I don't get
- 0:51Speaker 1: the sense that this was we love Elbow.
- 0:54Speaker 3: Was it?
- 0:56Speaker 2: No?
- 0:56Speaker 3: And you're right, there wasn't one thing. The Liberals were
- 1:02Speaker 3: pretty crap on the campaign trail, putting it bluntly. Look,
- 1:07Speaker 3: there's never ever really one thing that the whole electorate,
- 1:12Speaker 3: the whole voting population votes for a reason. The Liberals
- 1:18Speaker 3: just had a really bad campaign and people didn't like
- 1:22Speaker 3: Peter Dutton as a possible Prime minister, and the fact
- 1:26Speaker 3: that he lost his seat like John Howard did. John
- 1:28Speaker 3: Howard lost his seat back in and was at keven
- 1:32Speaker 3: O seven two thousand and seven, wasn't it. John Howard
- 1:36Speaker 3: lost his seat. Tony Abbott lost his seat eventually, So
- 1:40Speaker 3: now Dutton's lost his and he's lost it to a
- 1:44Speaker 3: woman by the name of Ali France, and it was
- 1:47Speaker 3: her third time going up against him in his seat Queensland,
- 1:50Speaker 3: Seed of Dixon. She was just just kept eating away
- 1:56Speaker 3: at his small majority and got there in the end.
- 2:00Speaker 3: It's not just though every state went towards labor. And
- 2:07Speaker 3: one of the comments on Saturday night was that Victoria
- 2:11Speaker 3: is generally a very labor state. It's one of the
- 2:15Speaker 3: most progressive states in the country and Victoria was lagging
- 2:18Speaker 3: behind because it wasn't as far ahead showing the swing
- 2:23Speaker 3: to labor as everyone else it was. It was sort
- 2:26Speaker 3: of like very very funny to watch, to be honest.
- 2:29Speaker 3: But now in Victoria, even labor there has It's gone
- 2:35Speaker 3: from no liberal MPs in city at all in any
- 2:41Speaker 3: of the metropolitan areas. Same with South Australia. In Tasmania
- 2:45Speaker 3: they had two liberal MPs down there. They lost both
- 2:48Speaker 3: of those. So all of Tasmania is now labor except
- 2:51Speaker 3: for one seat, and that's in Hobart where there is
- 2:54Speaker 3: an independent who was a long standing independent in Hobart.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Every state has gone to labor and it's been just
- 3:03Speaker 3: a pretty amazing sort of thing. You know, when some
- 3:05Speaker 3: of the polls were saying that there was a possibility
- 3:08Speaker 3: of a labor minority government or even a liberal win,
- 3:12Speaker 3: or it just went hold my beer, not now going,
- 3:17Speaker 3: We're going all the way.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Great, great analysis of it. Leslie really appreciate that. This morning,
- 3:22Speaker 1: Leslie omens our Australia correspondent.
