- speaker-0: I remember driving home from the first time I had it done and I was like, it was the best thing I've ever done in my entire life. I paid for a facial. The lady put a vitamin C mask on my face and left me for 45 minutes. ⁓ my gosh. Hello Lisa. speaker-1: What about you? Hello, how are you Lisa? speaker-0: Good. It's been a wild ride, but before we get into it, let me introduce us. Hi, I'm Lisa, your cohost of the Hi5 Best Podcast, and this is... speaker-1: Lisa Smith, also co-host of High Five Hot Mess Podcast. speaker-0: And we like to say we show up, we glow up, and then we spill something every single time, every step of the way. And that's just who we are. So we're going embrace it, especially this week. How's your week been? I like I haven't talked to you in like 100 years this week. speaker-1: You know... It's so weird that we haven't talked because we typically talk all the time. But I think going into this week, I really set an intention that, you know, it's going to be great. It's going to be positive. I knew there was a lot of things going on, but wow, did it kick my trash. I, I feel like I feel like it was a very intense energy this week. And I might have not reacted to certain things in the positive way that I thought I would be, how I was hopping into the week all positive and slipper. I'm a little, I'm a little, I'm a little, yeah, I'm not going to lie. speaker-0: Tori. speaker-1: And you know what it really is, is like, I think that I might have misunderstood conversations or, mean, I have to take responsibility for my reaction, right? But wow, we do know that energy can be heavy sometimes and it can be a little bit intense. that's what I think happened is... speaker-0: It's also, I don't want to interrupt, like Lisa, it's Mercury's in retrograde, day two in the year of the fire horse. it is like, know that talk, and again, Lisa and I talk about this all the time, but the year of the fire horse is a big deal. It only happens once every 60 years, something crazy like that. And to have Mercury retrograde the first part of the new year, it's February 25th through March 20th. It is... tectonic shifts in the good, tectonic shifts in the bad, you might get something really big and then something really big gets taken away. It's going to give you whiplash and it's going to be high energy, high chaos. speaker-1: Yeah. and you know, Mercury retrograde. like anybody that knows me knows that I talk about it all the time. always, well, it's Mercury. Mercury's in retrograde. That's why our computers just went down. Mercury's in retrograde. That's why someone just lost their ever loving mind. But it's true. It really impacts like communication and technology and things like that. And Mercury isn't going backwards. It kind of looks like it. But it does have a pretty intense energetic shift. Three times a year, we have to go through this. to your point, it's right. Like to happen right at the beginning of the year of the fire horse is pretty intense. But like, did you feel it? Because I think I felt it. Like I felt like I was a hot mess this week. speaker-0: So I don't think I was a hot mess this week, but it's because I had a different start to my week than you did. So I had my hair done and my hairdresser, she was like, yeah, like you're a Pisces and Mercury retrograde, like buckle up. I'm not talking seatbelt, I'm talking like three point harness buckle up. And I was like, I didn't know really what... that meant. So I had to Google it. Like I always do everything. Dear co-pilot, am I going to die? And again, even if I do die, I'm good because I have a whole funeral plan, which you know all about. You're an active participant. And it went, that is not, you're missing out because it's going to be great. One day I'll tell the story. But it basically just said that you need to slow your roll because I'm Pisces, my birthday's coming up. that has a lot and it's a water sign, right? So conflict. And it basically said slow your roll and spend more time doing reflection rather than action, which for me is very hard because I'm all action all the time. speaker-1: That's one of your strengths. and it can, I mean, that's what I just admire about you is because you get shit done all the time. speaker-0: You get shit done too. both, are both bad ass ladies who get shit done. Yeah, it is different, but like I want to, I want to read you something that has been living referee in my head all week. Yeah. Yeah. And then it's a bit of a ride, but just hang in there with me because I think it's worth it. So I'm going to read this quote. It came from an article by Justin Brown. speaker-1: Different. speaker-0: who I did not know before I read this article but have since looked into and he is kind of like a loneliness guru. speaker-1: Where did you hear about the article? speaker-0: I read it, so I was dupescrolling, like I always do. I don't know, like listen, I don't know why AOL thinks I'm so interested in 70 year old ladies in bikinis, but I am not. Like, I've never even once. speaker-1: Okay. Is that on your algorithm or something? speaker-0: No, it's in my AOL newsfeed. It's all old ladies in bikinis, which again, shout out ladies, but I'm of the mind that like, can I just get a break? Like I don't, I'm turn 55. I don't wanna wear a fucking bikini anymore. Like, can I just get a break? speaker-1: You don't have to wear one. speaker-0: Anybody else out there that's feeling bad too? Don't worry about it. ⁓ so the top of the article is, psychology says the most dangerous form of loneliness isn't being alone. It's being surrounded by people while performing a version of yourself that none of them would recognize if they saw you at home on a Sunday afternoon. speaker-1: I kind have to think about that for a second. I mean, if I was ever home on a Sunday afternoon. speaker-0: you're not. But I think it more like, talks more... So when I was becoming sober and all my sober journey, the doctor that I was working with basically said, you're bored and you're lonely and that's why you drink so much. I'm an alcoholic, right? And that's when I learned that you can be married, happily married and have friends, but it is not their job to keep you entertained or keep you not from being bored. And then one of the hardest parts of quitting drinking was how isolated I felt because when everybody else is hammered or even drinking four or five glasses of wine, for me, I don't have that filter. I don't have that shield. This is all I'm bringing to the game. I always kind felt left out and people thought it was weird because I wasn't drinking. And it was uncomfortable and the performative side. So this was one of the things that when I read through the article, he was like, so I was at a work dinner and you know how those things can be. We've been through enough of them in our life. And there was someone at the table that was the life of the party, everyone's favorite person at work, everyone's work husband. They were just cracking jokes left and right. Everybody's laughing and having a great time. and he leans over and tells this person, yeah, I've been performing this role for so long, I don't even think I'd recognize myself anymore. Wow. And for me, like head to toe goosebumps, because I often feel like I am somebody who talks more than I listen. And I always feel that I really am, like I'm always performing like a role, right? And that's when I went and... saw a psychiatrist when I graduated from therapy and psychiatry, she was really like the first person to be like, look, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you are an introvert. speaker-1: So crazy because knowing you in all the different settings I know you in, you do not come across as an introvert. speaker-0: Correct, but you're one of the people that have seen me at home on a Sunday. Mm-hmm. I don't talk for like speaker-1: And you don't want to Don't talk to me. ⁓ speaker-0: You've seen me at dinner where my switch goes off. ⁓ yeah. we got to like, my cup is empty, we got to go. So like, she was like, you're an introvert, and you emote, emote, emote all day long. And then you come home and you completely shut down. And that's not good for your relationships at home. And it's not good for your relationships at work, because you're probably, you probably are not the life of the party in the way that you think you are. And it just, it never really kind of like, I never really got it until speaker-1: Yep. speaker-0: Like last night. So my friend that was my best friend in high school, right or die. she was my maid of honor at my wedding. And you know, people kind of do different things and go in different places. But she called me and she's like, Hey, let's get together and have coffee. was like, hell yeah, I would love to do that. So, I mean, I've seen her in like a month. And so we got together and I caught myself performing. speaker-1: Peace. speaker-0: Like I was telling her a story like I was on stage like blah blah blah blah blah and then this person and that person haha aren't I hilarious and and I noticed like her eyes the light was dimming like this was not what she came for you know. So I pulled myself back and I was like okay like listen more than you talk and we ended up having a great time we ended up like swapping stories and like She's a very spiritual person, I'm not, and we all have these weird experiences. We spent the whole time talking about that and it was awesome. I'm happiest about is that I caught myself in the moment and I'm really trying hard to not be so performative and be okay if I'm not well loved or liked in every room that I'm in. I really didn't think that that mattered to me, but I caught myself doing it again today at a work meeting. where like I felt like I wasn't contributing like everybody else was so I felt like I had to tell this story to keep everyone entertained and it's like what am I doing? Like I don't need to tell them, I don't need to share, I don't need to create someone that isn't there and if I stop doing that then maybe I'll be more present for stuff in other places. speaker-1: love that you had that kind of epiphany and you could recognize it over the last couple days, but give yourself some credit. We were in an industry for so many years where we were on stage every day and we weren't... speaker-0: We were not strippers. were in retail sales. speaker-1: We were not asked to come with our authentic self. We were asked to come as a persona of a role that we needed to play. So I think, I mean, I definitely, mean, you couldn't, when you entered the room, you were on stage, you were on camera, right? Like when you ⁓ were doing store visits or whatever that looked like, ⁓ meetings. So yeah, it was... ⁓ Yeah, give yourself some credit because we kind of grew up that way. But I love that you recognize that and ⁓ it's definitely something for me to think about as well. speaker-0: We sure did. ⁓ I mean, I know it's a little heavy, but I think it kind of feeds into what we were just saying with like, this has been a heavy week for a lot of people. And I want to give a shout out. My parents have passed away and I have no children. The only person I have to take care of is myself and my husband is very independent. He takes care of himself. And we're very, I'm exhausted all the time just taking care of myself. So I want to do a shout out. to all the people who are taking care of their parents that didn't think they were going to be taking care of their parents, to all of those people that are taking care of their spouses, their children, their extended family. ⁓ They're giving, giving, giving, and ⁓ they continue to have this well of energy to do all of this stuff because I don't have that. And it's this week specifically. was really hard. Like I felt like every single day just never ended. It was like all day long, every single day. Like we didn't get to talk at all because everything, like life just got in the way. speaker-1: I just kind of kind of spiraled a little bit and I felt the same way. felt like every day I wasn't doing something good enough. In all areas, I was just like falling short and ⁓ I was kind of emotional. I don't know really where that was coming from. The reaction didn't match the crimes this week. So if that makes sense. So, so I need to just probably do some inward. Yeah. Cause it was, uh, I was like, who is that girl? Don't know who it is, but I the other one back. speaker-0: Yeah. Check yourself before you. Justin Brown, the guy that, loneliness guru, I'm going to work on that. I'm going look into that. You're going to look into like, why are we doing time that doesn't match the crime? we'll keep each other updated on any progress that we make. speaker-1: I definitely want to look into that because I think there is something to the word lonely, right? Just like you said, you can be married, you can have friends, you can have a job, you can have kids, you can have all of that, but you can truly be lonely because you're ⁓ not doing anything for yourself or filling your personal bucket. And I definitely think that that is something that we have. of a quest to do this year, right? Like, it was very intentional for us to kind of look at things to figure out how we can be better. mean, and it's not just one year thing, but I think it just like helped us kind of start focusing on, hey, what will make me happy? know? will bring me peace? What will bring me peace? And so I'm definitely speaker-0: Yep. Peace. speaker-1: Definitely, love that article. Thanks for sharing. speaker-0: Yeah, no problem. And I'll keep everybody updated on it. But so because we are both feeling so heavy, let's get into our pop culture obsessions and like feeding our brain trash. speaker-1: Okay, great. I mean, I didn't have a ton of time to watch a lot of my favorite shows this week, but I did. I'm preparing because as you know, I'm a super fan of Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. Absolutely love the ladies, love the show. I'm excited. speaker-0: I love that. This week- what about you? I worked a lot like you did and I had a lot of commitments to things I had to go do. I didn't get to read it all. It was my husband's birthday so that was our big focus area. We did binge watch How to Get to Heaven from Belfast. speaker-1: Mmm, I've never watched that. speaker-0: I love Irish shows. on Netflix, if I think it's Netflix, if it's not, don't get mad, but we'll find it together. All strong female leads and each individual person is someone you're really rooting for, which is important to me. I absolutely loved it. All right. Love it. back to like my dinner that I had or my coffee friend that I had. you know, we spent, like I said, we spent the whole time swapping ghost stories and swapping like... weird personal experiences that we've had, and I've had quite a few. But I was talking to her about our board, right? Because again, I will talk to anyone about the podcast. You're checking me out at Smiths? Okay, hey, guess what? Have you heard about my podcast? Here's my link. Make sure you check it out. I am shamelessly promoting everything because it is our love project. It's our passion project. I'm shamelessly promoting it and one of the things I was talking to her about was the board, right? And I was like, yeah, we're going to get a tarot reading and we want to see a psychic. And she was like, okay, but what about Oracle cards? I'm like, I don't know what that is, but I came home and put it on the board. So looking it up, I speaker-1: never had an oracle card reading. Tarot, yes, tons of tarot, lots of psychic. ⁓ speaker-0: So, a hard reading is, think, like, she is very spiritual and I am not spiritual. So, that is just proof that you can come from two different perspectives and still find value in one another and how you communicate. I'm not preaching. I'm just saying. Yeah. You can have differences of opinions, big ones, and still be friends. speaker-1: Okay, read me the definition because I have a question. speaker-0: Okay, hold on. Okay, Oracle card reading is a flexible and intuitive practice used for self-reflection, guidance, and meditation rather than a rigid future-based prediction. Unlike Tarot, Oracle decks vary in structure and theme, allowing you to connect to your inner wisdom, choosing a deck, and ⁓ asking open-ended questions. how to then it tells you how to perform it and it says tips for beginners make sure that you understand what it is you're asking like make sure it's something that's really going to resonate trust your intuition and ⁓ they act as a tool for personal development speaker-1: Okay, I mean, to be honest, I'm sure some of the readings that I've gotten used Oracle cards because they do, I mean, I've had them where they'll say, they'll ask a question and then pull the cards out, you know, instead of just laying the cards out and then reading from that because there's so many different scenarios and different meanings for how the cards are placed and how they look together. And then if they're upside down, it means something different. So, ⁓ I'm sure that that's happened before because they've asked a question and then pulled cards out. But I don't know. ⁓ I'm not an expert, but let's do it. It's on the board, right? Yep. speaker-0: It's on the board. put it on the board. It's there. And have you discovered anything that you want to put on the board? speaker-1: Yes. So I actually had hair done this week. Okay. And I was talking to my hairdresser just kind of about the same thing, just like, I know she's kind of going through, you know, something and she knows everyone, right? Like when you're a hairdresser, you kind of know all the things. And she's been doing this for a long time and I've known her almost my whole life. And she, I was telling her, know, like, I'm just, I want to gather as many really great experiences this year. I'm sure you know of some really great ones, right? And, or what have you tried that maybe I should try? ⁓ Just because I trust her and I know that she'll always give me some good advice and she brought it. So. She was talking to me about how one of her clients goes to this ⁓ spa type place where I live. ⁓ they are, they're a reflexology ⁓ based business. And ⁓ she said that it's, you know, very reasonably priced from what she heard. She hadn't done it yet. So you're like, yeah. She was like, I don't want to try it, but she only says amazing things about this place. And she's like, but I would love to try it because, mean, it focuses on pressure points in like your feet, your hands, your ears. And it's really a focus on reducing stress and just helping you stay in a peaceful state. Or do like, ⁓ gosh, I can't remember what it's called, but seeds, ear seeds that they put, and they're like little tiny, tiny dots. And they put them like in your ear. Like I was looking at. speaker-0: seed they're not putting seeds like they're speaker-1: You're seeds in your ear. They're like, it's like. speaker-0: Don't put race in mine here! speaker-1: Almost looks like a little rhinestone or something like, okay. So anyway, um, but she says like the massages are, are amazing because they do like hand massages, your feet, um, and, and all of that. So I'm, I looked into it price point. Looks very reasonable. Um, they do like 30 minutes, 60 minute, 90 minute, and then they have like this membership thing. So anyway, I'm going to look into it. Okay. want to try a session and. tell you what I think. And then if we could ever get together and do it together, I would love that because I, I'm going to add it to the board because I really honestly think that this is something, I mean, it's non-invasive. It doesn't need to take up a ton of your time or a ton of your money, right? And so I'm going to look into it and I definitely sooner than later, I think I need to try it because of how I'm feeling. speaker-0: board though. speaker-1: You know? speaker-0: Take your time Lisa, you can't pour from an empty cup girl. speaker-1: ⁓ I know. Yeah. So I'm looking forward to it. That's what I'm going to do. ⁓ And then I'm going to report back and let's get it on the board though, because they do do a lot of other things there as well. So I will get, I'll get us a brochure or something. can kind of. speaker-0: I have an actual board in my office that I'm tracking all this stuff, like a full life size on the board. Doug walked into the room and he's like, what is all this? I'm like, ⁓ this is a board. These are our experiences. We're seeking to be blissfully happy. We're seeking to find peace. And he's like, that looks expensive. I'm like, it smells expensive and it's happening. So just relax. speaker-1: And we will take it chunk by chunk, we'll take it piece by piece. And you know, I'm just excited to try something and also focus on some things that I've wanted to do for a long time. Yeah. And something new. So anyway, I'm excited about that. So reflexology. speaker-0: definitely add that to the board. ⁓ And we have had an experience together and I'm going to launch us into that. So Lisa and I, like we talked about, we want to have experiences and we're going to share them with you through the lens of it's just a high five experience, is this a hot mess experience, like how did it go for us? So the first one that we did together ever was we went to a head spa. I As the only hobby I have is going to the spa was surprised as I was listening to the demoted podcast with Natalie and Corporate Bro. It is currently on hold, but it is a great podcast. They have lots of episodes. If you want to go listen to it, it's about the shenanigans that happen at work. ⁓ Like their company retreat, you'll remember this. Remember the crazy shit that used to happen at retreats or like corporate week? Like they have all these stories that they tell that they got from listeners. It's a great podcast. Anyway, Natalie was in Japan and she was talking about how she and her friends spent their day at a head spa. it was such a great experience. I was like, what is a head spa? So I'm like looking it up. I'm like, is it dirty? Like what is a head spa? And so essentially I learned what it was and I found one locally, which surprised. me probably more than anybody else because I don't live in a Mecca with all this cool stuff. But so the fact that I have two here in town should tell you something. And I also want to say that I did not use the Fresher website. I actually have a Fresher app. So it is an app and it's awesome. You can go and it's not, I'm not being sponsored. This is just me helping everybody out. You can pull up book things around you and it will tell you what's available. It helps you book things, it gives you the price, it tells you what it is. It's a great app. I use it for lots of things. I get lots of discounts by using that, which I love. I looked this place up and I went and I have since brought everyone I've ever met since kindergarten to a head spa with me because I feel like it's my place in the world to make sure everybody has this experience. But I want Lisa to share her experience and how it went for her. Because it was her first time. speaker-1: Yeah, it was. So I've been seeing this treatment on social media and things like that for a while. And there's quite a few like little spas and salons that here where I live that actually advertise this treatment. And I really wanted to look into it, but things have just gotten kind of so hectic. And then when you had brought it up, I was like, ⁓ yes, I would love to try this because as we know, anything ⁓ hair related, I'm all in if it's going to help my situation. And so I was really excited and you had actually booked the appointment and booked a hair... What treatment was it again? It was some like for hair loss. speaker-0: It was the anti-hair loss treatment for you and then mine was the basic one. speaker-1: Yes. So we go into the spa. It's really pretty. Everything looks great. It's super clean. Everyone's so nice. We got to pick our essential oil, what we wanted for our treatment before we went back. And then they take you back and you are with your... I mean, I don't even know what they call them. Technician. You're a technician. mine was Danielle, yours was Maddie, right? Yep. And they were great. They were great. They sit you down kind of like a hair salon booth. That's kind of what it looked like. And they start, you know, running their fingers through your hair, like kind of playing with your hair. And then they get these cameras out. and they start taking pictures of your scalp. And that is to show buildup, scalp, health, things like that. So they take before and after pictures. And so they kind of talk, also talk to you about just what are your concerns or what is your routine look like and things like that. And what are you looking for? know, what are you looking for in the experience? I thought that was really great that they took the time to kind of talk to us and get to know us a little bit because it's kind of, I mean, it's a two hour process. So they're with you for a while. So you really kind of got to, you know, know who's working on you, I think, and feel comfortable, I guess. So then they walk you back into this room and it's a big room with like little pod stations. That's how I could like... speaker-0: Yes. speaker-1: ⁓ describe it. And so there's multiple people in this large room, but it's just, they've kind of got this projector going with like water and everything. And you can just hear, you know, soft, beautiful music. The lights are pretty low. So it's a very relaxing environment. have you take your shoes off, you get in like, you crawl into the pod. That's kind of gives you a little hug. You lay there and it starts massaging your whole body. So you're kind of just like. stationary, but getting a full body massage. And then you lay back and they start doing an amazing, like this amazing scalp treatment for like an hour. And my favorite part, well, there were so many different parts because they give you this amazing massage and ⁓ it was so great. But it's that water halo that just keeps kind of going back and forth. And it's just that like super soft trickle of water that's all over your head. then, and then when they, when she tells you that it's over, kind of super sad because you want it to continue. And, but then you have to get up and she takes you out and she does pictures of your hair again. Well, they do a blowout. They do your hair again, which is great. You're not leaving with like a wet, wet hair. Yep. blow your hair out, they style it. then she just, what I loved about my technician was she just really talked to me a lot about different options that I can try and different things to look for and ⁓ different products and things I could try. So really appreciated it. She was so great, so kind. And then we left and it was like, I couldn't wait to be able to go back. you know, another time. I loved it. It was so great. was awesome. speaker-0: I remember driving home from the first time I had it done and Doug was like, well, what did you think? Because I was talking to him on the phone, was hands free. And I was like, it was the best thing I've ever done in my entire life. And he was like, that sounds expensive. I'm like, so what? I would pay triple if they made me pay it because it was worth every single penny. Like you guys, I I was going It was like a religious experience. And I've had lots of different treatments. I've had lots of different things done, but this was different. Like when you walk in and they start playing with your hair, immediately you unclench, your shoulders draw, right? And I mean, there's just something about having someone play with your hair. And then they give you like a little shoulder massage and a neck massage. it's like, you're like, whatever, like whatever you want to do to me, I'm game. Like let's go. And I mean, for real, and it was, I had brought, I had such an amazing experience and I brought one of my very best friends who never treats herself to anything to one. And I thought, you know, she was gonna have, and I was like, what'd think? It's just like, that was really nice. And I'm like, what? Like I literally. speaker-1: You're like, We in the same place. speaker-0: Like I was speaking in tongues, like for real, like it was next level for me. So then I went and I was telling my hairdresser about it and I was like, have you heard of a head spot? She's like, there's one across the street, I want to try it. I was like, you've got to try it, let me know what you think. She's like, okay. So the next time I see her, I'm like, did you try it? She's like, holy shit. I'm like, right? Like it was, it was one of those things that unless you've done it, you just don't understand like it. how amazing you're going to feel after. Like I've got pictures of the two of us having it done and like my face, I'm just like, I'm blissed out. So when I say I want to be blissfully happy, this is my face. speaker-1: That's gonna help you get there for sure. speaker-0: Yeah, I mean, for sure for real. but let's talk, I just want to talk a little bit about cost because we're trying to keep it real here, right? So when I tip, I tip 20 % on any of my treatments. And this we didn't have any discounts because I booked it because there wasn't anything kind of happening going on. But the basic scalp treatment, which was is two hours. So you get the basic treatment plus the blowout is a separate cost. plus gratuity. So all in for two hours, was $178. then for Lisa's anti-hair loss, which was two hours, again, the treatment, the experience, plus the blowout, plus gratuity, we were only at $262. So worth it? Worth it. I paid more for stuff. Like I paid for a facial, that literally the lady put a vitamin C mask on my face and left me for 45 minutes. speaker-1: ⁓ my gosh, what does that do to speaker-0: And that's left and it like this was before I grew into my voice right where I have been like get the fuck back in here ⁓ But then I burned my skin. I paid like $300 for that. ⁓ I'm like whatever and then I had a two-hour massage once where literally the girl was sitting down Massaging me with her left hand as she was on her phone like watching something on her phone because I could see it What are you doing, man? speaker-1: This is awful. speaker-0: And that was $270, right? like, I don't like to say bad things about students. I don't do bad reviews. I don't do any of that. I just don't go back.
