- 0:26Nobody can, yeah. No one could Hello everyone,
- 0:30welcome to another brand new episode of Did that Age Well,
- 0:33and I want to start before we get into the episode, of course,
- 0:37on Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I know that you've heard me talk
- 0:42on this podcast before about how awesome spider moving company
- 0:46is. I just wanted to share that
- 0:48yesterday they actually did help me move into my new place and I
- 0:54couldn't be happier with how great of a job they did.
- 0:56They got there not just on time but a little early.
- 0:59They helped me move all of my heavy stuff and made it look
- 1:03super easy. I had a bunch of random stuff
- 1:06around the house that still kind of needed to be packed up and
- 1:09they helped me out. No complaints and I'm just so
- 1:14happy and relieved that they worked so hard for me and made
- 1:16this whole stressful process way less stressful.
- 1:19So so I can now say proudly that I can personally vouch for
- 1:24Spider Moving and Storage. They did a phenomenal job and I
- 1:29couldn't recommend them enough. So if you want to get a free
- 1:31quote for local move, cross country move residential
- 1:35commercial, go ahead and visit spidermovingcompany.com.
- 1:40And you can also follow them on Instagram at Spider Moving Co.
- 1:45And I'm pretty sure that those are correct.
- 1:47But if they are incorrect, listen to whatever is in the
- 1:51show notes and not to me. And yeah, thank you so much
- 1:59Spider for sponsoring dude. IDK studios, you guys rock.
- 2:03Happy to have you as a partner. OK.
- 2:06And without further ado, my guest today, my new friend.
- 2:10You know her from City cast Denver.
- 2:12You know her as the most popular kid in school in Denver.
- 2:16It's pre Davies. Hi, Molly.
- 2:18Thanks for having me. Thank you.
- 2:19So much for being here. That ad read was stellar, by the
- 2:22way. Wow, thank you so much.
- 2:24You were just like. Off the cuff.
- 2:26It was great. Look, it's very, it's very
- 2:29recent experience, you know, thinking of how, how I felt just
- 2:33yesterday. When you were moving.
- 2:34When I was moving, it's kind of a core memory at this time.
- 2:38I love it. Well now I know who to go to.
- 2:40That was just a great ad read. Oh my gosh.
- 2:41Well, I'm so glad. I really, I really genuinely
- 2:44hope that you do. And next time, if you have to
- 2:46move, which I hope that you don't.
- 2:48Well, I like to have something in my I don't, but I'd like to
- 2:50have that in my back pocket when someone says, Hey, I need to
- 2:53know, you know what I mean? I'm the I know a guy person.
- 2:55I so I love to have a guy. Person to be is the I know a guy
- 2:59person and kind of exactly why you should be doing what you do
- 3:03professionally. I know.
- 3:05Too many. I know too many people.
- 3:06And too many people. There are so many, and you know
- 3:09of them. I do.
- 3:10I know them all. Yeah.
- 3:11So. So what have you been up to?
- 3:12What's going on with City Cast? What's going on with you?
- 3:14Well, I just got back from a trip to Paris in Copenhagen,
- 3:18which was incredible. Thank you.
- 3:20It was, yes. I don't know, lifetime
- 3:24achievement. I've never traveled that.
- 3:25Far. Oh my God, that's so exciting.
- 3:28Yeah, So my husband Greg and I and our son went on a little
- 3:32trip. I met my husband out there
- 3:34because he was on tour already. He's a musician.
- 3:36And we stayed with my cousins Patrick and Macarena in
- 3:40Copenhagen too. And it was just a really lovely
- 3:43experience. So I just, I'd like just got
- 3:46back. So I'm actually just getting
- 3:48back into work. And so folks have been listening
- 3:50to City Cast number. I have not disappeared.
- 3:53I'm still here and you will hear me soon enough.
- 3:57But yeah, just, you know, getting back into the group.
- 4:00Yeah, totally. So I can't wait for the rumors
- 4:02and conspiracy theories to say about where you've been.
- 4:06They're like, did they kill Bree?
- 4:08They. Killed Bree, but you're not
- 4:11going to hear about it because they can't talk about her on
- 4:13City Cast here. She just, I don't know where she
- 4:16went. No, they're very nice.
- 4:18We have a very generous vacation policy and so we all get to take
- 4:22trips during the year and it's that's great.
- 4:25It's one of the lovely parts about working there.
- 4:27That is so cool and you have great Co workers who, yeah, you
- 4:31know, do stuff. We're all, yeah, we're all kind
- 4:33of utility players in this really sense.
- 4:35So we can all host, which is nice.
- 4:38That is great. But that is the main thing I do
- 4:41there so totally. Yeah, well, Congrats and welcome
- 4:44back. Thank you.
- 4:45Did it. Do you feel like it gave you a
- 4:47little travel bug? Like oh, now I want to be a a
- 4:50lady who travels. A little bit, yeah.
- 4:52Because I have to be honest with you, I'm not super travel
- 4:55oriented, but my husband is because he's a touring musician
- 4:58and this is what he's done his whole life.
- 5:00And he, he's the one that really was like, hey, I'm already going
- 5:04to be out there, right? So that's like a plane ticket
- 5:07taken care of, of course. So why not you and Montgomery
- 5:11come out? And and then the cool part was
- 5:13it was like a short trip flight wise, and it wasn't too
- 5:16expensive from Paris to Copenhagen.
- 5:18And we had a free place to stay with my cousins and it was
- 5:22phenomenal. So God, yeah.
- 5:25So I think we'll be doing more traveling for sure.
- 5:28I think you will too. And I, I, I love.
- 5:31I didn't realize that your cousins lived there.
- 5:33I thought you were all meeting up there.
- 5:34No, my cousins are, I do my, my cousin Patrick and his wife
- 5:39Macarena are both engineers and they met in engineering school
- 5:44in Copenhagen. He's from Grand Junction, she's
- 5:46from Leon, Spain. And they came back to the States
- 5:51for a while and she got a really great job offer and they were
- 5:54like, we're having a kid. It's a really cool place to
- 5:58raise kids. So, you know, all the the
- 6:01different, it's a very different, it's a very different
- 6:04culture in Copenhagen than America, obviously.
- 6:08But I was like, you know, you guys are raising your kid in a
- 6:11culture that's neither of yours and how do you feel about that?
- 6:14And they were both like, it's kind of awesome.
- 6:16They were like it. Rocks, like you literally
- 6:18walked. No, truly.
- 6:19Like we walked to a park and their son Edward's like 15
- 6:23months old. And so he was just in a stroller
- 6:25and he was asleep. And Makarina just put him under
- 6:27a tree and, and walked over to the playground.
- 6:30And I was like, you're going to leave?
- 6:31You can just leave him under. The baby, she goes, yeah, I
- 6:34mean, that's it's OK here. And so it was a really cool
- 6:37experience. That is so cool.
- 6:38Highly recommend. Different seeing somewhere
- 6:41outside of what you know, will make you think differently
- 6:44about. I mean, I think about this city
- 6:46that I live in every day. And so it was cool to see other
- 6:50cities and how the cultures function within those cities.
- 6:53You know that. Is so beautiful.
- 6:55Yeah, it was cool. I love that.
- 6:56So you could say you kind of had your own little Ferris Bueller's
- 6:59Day Off. Oh my God.
- 7:00Your own little vacay. I watched OK, I will get into
- 7:04this, but I did watch it on the plane and but I yes, but saying
- 7:08as I'm saying that as I've watched it hundreds of times, of
- 7:11course so but I was like, I'll just watch it on the plane and
- 7:14then I watched it when I got home and then.
- 7:16So fun. I could watch this movie.
- 7:19Every day I could too. Honestly, it's so easy.
- 7:24To watch yeah, yeah, I'm a John Hughes fan and I love I grew up
- 7:29on his movies and the feelings of his movies are just very
- 7:35comforting and and I mean, my favorite movie of his is 16
- 7:40candles, but like, it's highly. Problematic.
- 7:44Your favorite is 16 candles. I just love the characters.
- 7:50I know, I know, it's terrible and I but it's but this is the
- 7:56first John Hughes movie I ever saw.
- 7:59Oh, really? So.
- 8:00Oh, cool. Yeah.
- 8:01OK. So you have like a, a very close
- 8:04relationship to John Hughes then?
- 8:06I do. And I didn't realize that until
- 8:08I realized the movies that he had, yeah, were in like, my
- 8:11favorite Christmas. I'm a Christmas person.
- 8:13Oh yeah. And my favorite Christmas movie
- 8:15of all time is National Lampoons Christmas Vacation, which is a
- 8:17John Hughes movie. And if you watch that and you
- 8:19watch Ferris Bueller, there's a lot.
- 8:21Even Home Alone, you see the things that he does in every
- 8:25movie. He's very good with a sound
- 8:28design. And there's some of my favorite,
- 8:32like trope character tropes in all his movies, like Clueless
- 8:35Dad. I love a Clueless.
- 8:37Dad. Oh my gosh, I love a dad.
- 8:38That's just an oaf. He's a dumb Ferris's.
- 8:41Dad is like the most clueless dad and he's got.
- 8:45It's just he plays it so well. He does just coasting through
- 8:49life, being an ad exec or whatever, just.
- 8:53You got to increase your ad budget and like.
- 8:55This guy I and then he closes the door and then he but he has
- 8:59these like really low key amazing lines like the very end.
- 9:04Dad and mom meet at the front door, Jeannie's inside and mom's
- 9:08like, Oh my God, I had to pick her up at the at the police
- 9:10station da da, da, da, da. And the dad just goes, I think
- 9:13we should shoot her. And I was like, I so much of who
- 9:20I outwardly AM came from these characters in the in this in
- 9:24John Hughes movies. Totally, totally.
- 9:27And I think especially when I think about movies like Home
- 9:30Alone and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, the high
- 9:34jinks, high jinks, the goofs, the gags.
- 9:37The gags, the like the the devices that he uses, like he
- 9:41uses so many pieces of older technology to do these
- 9:44incredible things. In Ferris Bueller, it's the
- 9:46phone, of course, the phone is everything.
- 9:48Yep. And the intercom, the inner, the
- 9:51intercom, which again is like home alone.
- 9:53You see similar things like it's just, I don't know, it's, it's a
- 9:57throwback, but it feels timeless in a really interesting way.
- 10:01Yeah, there's so much, like, so much young ingenuity.
- 10:07There's so much like, how do I take all of these, you know, at
- 10:12the time, modern tools and use them to be an absolute shithead?
- 10:16Ferris Bueller's keyboard. Yes, that makes all the coughing
- 10:19noises, the tape he has playing of the snoring like the.
- 10:24Tape at the doorbell. Oh my God, yeah.
- 10:26Oh, it's so good. Oh, it's, I could like recite
- 10:29that whole thing. It's so good.
- 10:30It's so good. Yeah, I think that for me, one
- 10:33thing I love about John Hughes is really kind of these like
- 10:38more of the family fun style movies.
- 10:43I'm less of a fan of the really the ones that like really lean
- 10:46into the teen angst, like 16 Candles, Breakfast Club, Eat
- 10:50Breakfast Club. I'm kind of just like, OK, yeah.
- 10:53Like it's hard being a Gen. X teen.
- 10:54We got it, OK, blah, blah, blah, but but this one, I really, I
- 11:02feel like it hits that sweet spot of like a great point being
- 11:07being very like sympathetic to the teen struggle and this idea
- 11:12of being young and adults are just kind of like out to ruin a
- 11:15good time. Yeah, or your big sister is out
- 11:18to ruin your good time. Or your big sister is like the
- 11:22way that she the whole time you're like she's a narc, she's
- 11:26a narc, she's a narc and then. She saves him.
- 11:29She. Saves.
- 11:29Him and I identify with her so much 'cause I am the older
- 11:33sister that. Was a narc.
- 11:35And my brother is the like rambunctious, always getting in
- 11:40trouble. He, my brother never ratted on
- 11:43me one time, never one time. And I probably ratted on him a
- 11:47million times and he's like a solid like, and I was like, man,
- 11:51I really, I really was Jeannie Bueller.
- 11:55Wow. And just like tough her like
- 11:57she's just a bitch. She's just a bitch.
- 12:01She's a bitch to everyone. She's a bitch to her parents.
- 12:04She's a bitch to her brother. She's a bitch to to Grace, to to
- 12:08Principal Rooney's secretary. Yeah, like, and then you only
- 12:13see her soften a little bit when she falls in love with Charlie
- 12:15Sheen for five. Minutes at the police station
- 12:19because he said says you do your eye makeup wrong or whatever
- 12:23she. Goes, He goes, I love, I just
- 12:25love this scene. This vignette is so you don't
- 12:28have to see the movie to enjoy this moment.
- 12:30Yeah. He says, oh, my God.
- 12:32He says, you know, you wear too much eye makeup.
- 12:35And she just gives him this, like, what the fuck look?
- 12:37And he goes, My sister wears too much makeup and people think
- 12:41she's a whore. He's like, so straightforward
- 12:44about it, but he's also the only truth teller to her in the whole
- 12:47movie. That is true.
- 12:48I don't like that they established his wisdom and his
- 12:53ability to give sage advice by being like, look, he clocked
- 12:57hurt, you know that mug? He said, Girl, that's not it.
- 13:01I don't love that. But I do love that she did fall
- 13:04in love with the only person who would tell her the truth.
- 13:07Yeah. That would just be real to her
- 13:08face and be like maybe you need to get over it and leave your
- 13:11brother alone. Mind your own.
- 13:12Business, yeah, and maybe it's not actually a personal affront
- 13:16to you that he's more fun, but. He's just coasting through life.
- 13:19Yeah, when he's like, you could do that too.
- 13:21Like you could skip he. Would support.
- 13:23Her like he would be like, yeah, let's all hang out.
- 13:26You know what I mean? That that scene you you
- 13:28mentioned at the end where he's, he's like facing off with Rooney
- 13:33at his back door. His parents are about to come
- 13:34and she opens the door and saves him.
- 13:36It's such a sweet moment that you see a sibling relationship.
- 13:42It's a really cool example of a how a sibling relationship can
- 13:44really work sometimes, even though weirdly they got together
- 13:48in that movie. I know that is, that is.
- 13:51You know what I mean behind the scenes, and that is a.
- 13:52Weird thing for people who place those siblings in in movies then
- 13:56end up dating. But I mean, other than that,
- 13:59they they just played those characters.
- 14:01So. Yeah.
- 14:02So well, yeah. And they thought they didn't
- 14:04really look that much like each other.
- 14:06No. So, you know, at least that
- 14:07part, it's like, OK, we knew that they were siblings because
- 14:10they told us that, not because we were like, oh, they look the
- 14:13same. And then they ended up dating.
- 14:14That would have been a bummer. And the parents, The parents on
- 14:18that movie. That is crazy.
- 14:19And got married and had kids, isn't that?
- 14:22I don't know. I love this race, truly.
- 14:25I guess on Ferris Wheeler's day. I guess it is.
- 14:27How could it not be though? It's so romantic to play hooky,
- 14:31You know, it is so romantic to just like, have some silly high
- 14:34jinks and say, what are we going to do today?
- 14:36And does he not seem like the it's like the most thought out
- 14:39planned day, but it's played as like everything's on a whim,
- 14:45which kind of also makes me nostalgic for a time when you
- 14:49couldn't like just like have to get in line on, you know, like
- 14:53on a queue on an app to get something done to go do the
- 14:56ticketing. Da, da, da, da.
- 14:57Like he walked up to the box office and got tickets at
- 15:00Wrigley Field. And like, you know, like it was,
- 15:03it was a little bit of a, oh, that was a better time, even
- 15:06though none of it's probably realistic.
- 15:07He wasn't. He wasn't making a reservation
- 15:10or a fake name on OpenTable or whatever.
- 15:12You know what I mean? Abe Froman Sausage, King of
- 15:15Chicago would not play that well on and through.
- 15:17And nothing is worse than watching a character in a movie
- 15:21or on TV do something on the Internet.
- 15:23Like, Can you imagine how terrible my.
- 15:24God, that would be, he'd be like the entire movie would just be
- 15:27people, like on their phones being like, Oh no, like Rezi's
- 15:31telling me I can't do that because I have to create a new
- 15:34login. You know what I mean?
- 15:35Like that? Where I just logged into my
- 15:37school portal and just counted myself absent.
- 15:39Like end of the movie. End of his movie.
- 15:43But you know what I did Love Actually in this movie, and I
- 15:45think that it's probably because of the weird nostalgia element
- 15:49when he was on his computer and he was and he was fixing the
- 15:53number of. Absent nine 9 * 9 times I don't
- 15:59remember him being absent 9 times.
- 16:02I I love that scene. The computer scenes are funny
- 16:05because I wonder if younger folks have any frame of
- 16:09reference for what they're even looking at.
- 16:11Like, probably not. I learned how to type on a brown
- 16:14computer. I mean, I was there.
- 16:15But like, it looks so crazy archaic.
- 16:20There's like that scene, and then there's the scene where
- 16:22Ferris is like, there's like a naked woman on his computer when
- 16:26he's like talking to Cameron. And that, I would say, is the
- 16:29only time this was. There's a lot of rarities in
- 16:31this movie as an 80s movie, and one of them is it doesn't have
- 16:35boobs for no reason in it. A lot of 80s movies are just
- 16:37boobs for no reason. Yeah, absolutely.
- 16:39And this one. The only time you have boobs for
- 16:41no reason is the. Computer, the computer.
- 16:43And it's sort of like, well, yeah, I mean that that probably
- 16:46would be what would be. Something a teenage boy would be
- 16:49doing. And it's it's not as like, yeah,
- 16:51it's not as distracting as you find and like Revenge of the
- 16:55Nerds or, you know, or even in 16 Candles, there's like, right,
- 16:59this crazy boob scene for no reason.
- 17:00It totally. And it's, and it's like, it's
- 17:02just there. It's not like he's like.
- 17:04Oh, God, You know, he's just like talking on the phone, like
- 17:07it's so good. It's so good.
- 17:09Oh. So funny, you know.
- 17:10Okay, have you seen the movie The Mountain head?
- 17:12No, okay, it just recently it got nominated for an Emmy.
- 17:17It was it was a straight to streaming movie on HBO and it
- 17:23was like a compelling concept. But the entire time it's just
- 17:28like people looking at their phones being like, Oh my God,
- 17:30did you see this? And it was just like, OK, I'm
- 17:33tired of people standing around and being like, did you see
- 17:35this? It's the worst part of real life
- 17:38interaction. I don't want to see it.
- 17:40I don't need to see. It in a movie like it doesn't
- 17:43work as a device the way old school landline yes telephone
- 17:48does. The way that that Cameron was
- 17:51able to just use his goofy. Voice Oh I love.
- 17:55It to disguise it like that could they're prank.
- 17:57Call. I mean, they're prank calling
- 17:59the. Principal time you could prank
- 18:01call a. Principal I don't know, but I
- 18:03loved I we did like slumber party prank calls.
- 18:07Oh, I. Loved that.
- 18:08I I missed that. We used to go down to the
- 18:10payphone like a couple blocks from my best friend's house and
- 18:14at there was like a little little grocery store.
- 18:17This God, this was the 80s in Brighton, Co, which is tiny.
- 18:21There was a little market Schwartz's and we would go to
- 18:23that pay phone and prank call the babysitter that was watching
- 18:26us. No, I think as an older, like,
- 18:30you know, I became a babysitter. Obviously I was like, God, we're
- 18:33a bunch of little Dicks. Totally just.
- 18:36Torturing a person that's in charge of babysitting.
- 18:39Us, yeah, 'cause they were the ones who were there to ruin the
- 18:42fun. Unfortunately true.
- 18:43Unfortunately, we all become. I know.
- 18:46Grown-ups who ruined. This poor 15 year old girl that
- 18:49was probably babysitting us. Ohh God bless her, I know
- 18:52wherever she is. Wherever she is, thank you for
- 18:54your service. A woman who's probably only five
- 18:57years. Old.
- 18:57I know, I know. That's what I'm thinking about
- 18:59right now. I'm like, Oh my God.
- 19:01You're like we are peers now. Truly, I'm like kids I used to
- 19:03babysitter, like married and divorced now you know what I
- 19:06mean? They have they have kids who
- 19:08have kids. Yeah.
- 19:09Yeah, totally. It's not so funny.
- 19:12Were you like a A school skipper?
- 19:13We know you were a prank caller, but were you a school skipper?
- 19:16Not really. I was kind of a goody goody in
- 19:18terms of just like I didn't like getting in trouble.
- 19:21And that's where like truly my brother is like the, I could
- 19:24care less. He went to like 10 different
- 19:26schools, like school is whatever.
- 19:30And I was always like by the book very much.
- 19:32I remember when I played hooky a couple of times, I was
- 19:35terrified. And our, you know, I went to
- 19:41George Washington High School and we wouldn't really go very
- 19:44far. So we'd like go to the Denny's.
- 19:46And if you went to the Denny's, it was like surefire, you're
- 19:48going to get caught because they would just.
- 19:49Call the school. Yeah, they're like you are
- 19:52obviously as a teen, you obviously go to school down the
- 19:56street. Wednesday, yeah, 1:00 and you're
- 20:00here smoking a cigarette because it was 1996, of course and and
- 20:04you're drinking a coffee because that's what you could afford.
- 20:06I'm I'm calling the school. This is.
- 20:09Yeah, you're definitely a student.
- 20:11Were you a? Were you a ditcher?
- 20:13Not in high school, but I was in college.
- 20:15Oh, college. Yeah.
- 20:16College, Oh my God, I love to skip school.
- 20:20I love anytime that anyone was like, I kind of wanna skip
- 20:23class, they would call me and be like, hey, do you wanna skip
- 20:26class? I'd be like of course.
- 20:28Hey, I know we're paying for school now, yeah, but.
- 20:31Yeah, yeah, very cool. It's very, it's definitely
- 20:34giving Like I went to private liberal arts school because I'm
- 20:37like, what is what is money and time?
- 20:40I mean, I went to the what was then like the low cost City
- 20:43College, which is metro at the time, and now it's Metropolitan
- 20:47State University or whatever, but it was literally downtown.
- 20:50Yeah, you might as well. Just there was a bar on campus,
- 20:53right? Like it's like you expect us to
- 20:56go to class. Truly, I need to go smoke.
- 20:58Cigarettes. Yes, Somewhere, somewhere,
- 21:00anywhere, anywhere but right here in this class.
- 21:04But, but I do think that I probably would have been better
- 21:08off if I had gone to class more. Let's say that like I still did
- 21:11fine, Like I, I did fine. I graduated on time, whatever.
- 21:14But I it took me 8 years to get a bachelor's degree in
- 21:21journalism, which you know what? You don't even need a degree to
- 21:24be doing what I'm doing. But I'm just going to say it
- 21:28kind of it worked out for you. Look, you majored in journalism.
- 21:32I work in media. So look are.
- 21:35You look at you. Now like all the haters look up
- 21:40to 8 years baby. Yeah.
- 21:42Hey, you know what? It's not a race.
- 21:44I know it's truly I had to be an alcoholic in the middle of that
- 21:48and get sober to get out of. School, yeah.
- 21:50So definitely, you know, so you know what, here we we made it.
- 21:56Like I always say, everybody's path is different.
- 21:58You don't know what it's going to look like.
- 21:59There's no straight line. Just do your do what you can do.
- 22:03We do what we can. You know, I remember when I was
- 22:05a sophomore in college, my first semester of sophomore year when
- 22:09I was just drinking like a fish and I was taking the minimum
- 22:13number of credits to a full time student.
- 22:15And every day I'd be like, I can't go to class.
- 22:18It's too much. It's just too much.
- 22:22But then the times when I like got it together and I was taking
- 22:25like I was taking like more than 18 credits and I was like, OK, I
- 22:29just got to like. Just hammer it.
- 22:30Out. Just hammer it out.
- 22:31I almost feel as though like when I had more flexibility, I
- 22:36had I had less motivation to go to class.
- 22:39Yeah, you know what I mean? Oh.
- 22:40Yeah, for sure. Yeah.
- 22:41And I, I think about it now as like a, an adult adult.
- 22:44I mean like, man, I would be, I would be pissed at 18 year old
- 22:49me. Like what are you doing, man?
- 22:51Like, just shit's not that. Hard.
- 22:53It's just not that. Hard.
- 22:54You're taking math for liberal arts majors or whatever.
- 22:58Like you're literally you're. Doing high school level algebra,
- 23:01True college. At that maybe like and you're
- 23:05getting again, you're getting a degree in journalism.
- 23:07Not to diss all of my friends with journalism degrees, but
- 23:09like. But you know, not the.
- 23:11Hardest degree? Famously not the hardest shout
- 23:16out to my friends with like hospitality management degrees,
- 23:19but which again, love love you all that have the love they're.
- 23:23Like, hope you're making, you're probably making a lot of money,
- 23:26probably making a lot more money than we are.
- 23:30I remember that I wanted to go to hair school, like right out
- 23:32of high school. And my parents were like, no,
- 23:34you have to go to real college, which is such a bullshit thing
- 23:38to say. Like, that's not a real career.
- 23:40And then I remember, like, talking to my girlfriends that
- 23:42were hairdressers and like, they were making way more money than
- 23:46I was. They were doing way harder
- 23:47physical work. I mean being a hairdresser is
- 23:50hard but like they were making way more money than I ever made
- 23:53in journalism. For sure, and I'm sure they
- 23:56still are. Oh, yeah, and also they were, I
- 23:59mean, no offense, but like they were getting paychecks after
- 24:02like, you know, a couple of years.
- 24:04Yeah. And.
- 24:07I was, I mean, I was up until this current job I have with
- 24:12City Cast, I was never a salaried employee with like
- 24:16benefits or anything in any journalism job ever.
- 24:20It's actually why I left journalism for four years,
- 24:22because I was like, I can't live like this.
- 24:24Anymore I'm like I'm, I'm grown. I I had health.
- 24:28Insurance $12,000 a year. Like what dude?
- 24:31But you get free concert tickets like, well, OK, it's cool.
- 24:36It seems really cool for a little bit.
- 24:37It does until you want to like, make moves in your life and
- 24:40you're like, OK, I want to like buy a house and stuff.
- 24:43And it's not going to happen when I'm making like $50 a story
- 24:46or whatever. Yeah, so.
- 24:48And kids and. Yeah, totally.
- 24:50I mean, that didn't happen for me till I had a full time like
- 24:54real journalism job and that didn't happen till I was 40.
- 24:57Yeah. So not to say it's not out there
- 25:00of. Course, again, everybody's if
- 25:02you're, if you're a young aspiring journalist, just do it.
- 25:06Please do it. I have so much respect and love
- 25:08for the profession. But of course, but I I also like
- 25:11worked retail through all most of that as well.
- 25:15So I was always working retail and doing freelance work at the
- 25:18same time. So I'm like a 17 year veteran of
- 25:21retail and I have such deep respect for, of course, folks
- 25:24that do that work. And those are some of my best,
- 25:27oldest friends in the world are the folks I met folding shirts
- 25:31and, you know, selling makeup and dealing with bananas people.
- 25:36And, you know, it's like a real training ground for life when
- 25:39you have to do those kinds of, no kidding, customer service
- 25:41jobs. But yeah, you know.
- 25:43Kidding. And look at you, one of God's
- 25:45strongest soldiers. Look at me now.
- 25:50I host a podcast. Look at that.
- 25:52It's great. Except for when you tell people
- 25:54outside of the podcast, we're like, what do you do?
- 25:57And I'm like, I have host a podcast.
- 26:00They're like for a job. They're like, that's a job.
- 26:03I get that. So much of them all, yeah, yeah,
- 26:06it's a job. I actually, that's what I asked
- 26:08them when they came to me and I was offered the job.
- 26:11I was like podcasting, like that's what I had a podcast out
- 26:15of an anarchist bookstore where we definitely didn't make any
- 26:18money, but we actually like have this is a company and they
- 26:23that's what they do for this whole thing is we're a network
- 26:25of podcasts, right? It's pretty incredible.
- 26:27It is. Pretty incredible the honestly
- 26:29that anyone makes money in podcasts I.
- 26:31Didn't know anybody did. Yeah, only like Amy Poehler
- 26:34makes money in podcasts. Right.
- 26:36I mean, we could get into the celebrity podcast world versus
- 26:39the everyone else, but that's a whole other.
- 26:41Show whole other show. I know someone right now who
- 26:45they don't listen to this podcast so it doesn't matter,
- 26:47but they are getting trying get into podcasting to make money
- 26:52and I'm like, let me know how it goes.
- 26:53Like, yeah, Nick is laughing off.
- 26:56I know. I'm like, oh.
- 26:59And these guys dude IDK they hustle so hard.
- 27:02They are like, Oh my God. Like it's yeah.
- 27:06It's not like, oh, I'm in it to make a bazillion dollars.
- 27:09I mean, we'd all love to. Wouldn't that be great?
- 27:11And we all deserve to. Yeah, but it's like any creative
- 27:14profession. It's not.
- 27:15Yeah, the the end product is consumed without thinking about
- 27:19so much work that goes into the creation of it, right, You know?
- 27:23Yeah, but that's the road we chose.
- 27:24And here we are, and here we are, and here we are.
- 27:28Back to the movie So. Let's go back to the movie.
- 27:30Okay, so this actually is, I think, a nice segue into what I
- 27:33think is one of my favorite things about Ferris Bueller's
- 27:37Day Off, which is kind of the nihilism of it all.
- 27:41It is so Gen. X in the way that it's like yeah
- 27:43so we gotta enjoy being young because after this I mean we're.
- 27:47Never going to see each other again.
- 27:49Yeah, the conversation that Sloane and Cameron are having
- 27:51where they're laughing about their little like, I guess I'll
- 27:54go to college, and then it's like, then do what?
- 27:56And it's like, I don't know. Yeah, probably.
- 27:58Be mean to kids, you know. I didn't think about that.
- 28:01So I, I'm like, I'm a Gen. X cusp person, right?
- 28:05I was born in 1980. And so I, I don't really
- 28:08identify with millennials, but I, I don't necessarily, I
- 28:13identify more with Gen. X, but it isn't until I start
- 28:16really the popular culture that I've consumed my whole life that
- 28:19I really see what you're saying. Because I, to me it's like,
- 28:24there it is cheerful nihilism, maybe a little bit.
- 28:27And but Ferris Bueller is like almost the opposite of that.
- 28:31And that he is going to do whatever he's going to do and
- 28:35he's going to have a really good time doing it.
- 28:37And Cameron, on the other hand, is like, this world sucks.
- 28:40And that is such a Gen. X attitude.
- 28:43Like, I mean, I could get into this.
- 28:46I talk about it all the time on the show, but my on my show.
- 28:48But my son, who's four years old, is obsessed with Nirvana.
- 28:52And I love Nirvana too. But hearing the lyrics again as
- 28:56an adult and thinking about him in a different way, I'm like,
- 28:58God, this is such a bummer, right?
- 29:00Like, everything sucks. Like never.
- 29:03Whatever, whatever, Never mind. Like no wonder he.
- 29:08I know, like, I mean truly, but also like what, what was there
- 29:14to look forward? I don't know.
- 29:15It's like every generation has this, you know, what do we have
- 29:17to look forward to? But I don't know.
- 29:20It's that's an interesting thing.
- 29:21I didn't think about the Gen. X miss of this movie.
- 29:24Right. There's this sort of this
- 29:26quality of that I think is so John Hughes, that it's like if
- 29:30you're a teen, you have to make the most of every moment because
- 29:34one day you're going to be an adult and that sucks.
- 29:39It does. So you just have to make the
- 29:42most of it while you can, I guess.
- 29:43OK, here's my question for you, Bree.
- 29:45Do you think that Ferris Bueller went on to be the same,
- 29:51carefree, do whatever he wants and chase his bliss kind of guy?
- 29:55Or do you think that adulthood, college, career, all of that
- 30:00made him into a disgruntled adult like everyone else?
- 30:05I mean, I think based on the like class indicators we get in
- 30:10John Hughes movies in general, but especially in this movie, I
- 30:14bet Ferris Bueller just fucking coasted.
- 30:16He's doing fine. He's an exec some.
- 30:18He was an exec somewhere. He's a Neppo baby.
- 30:21Yeah, he's working at his dad's an executive company.
- 30:24He's like, I'm a creative director, 'cause I like the
- 30:26vibe. Yes, he's a vibes guy and I bet
- 30:30he did great and I bet he just coasted on that and he married a
- 30:34hot woman and, you know, lives in upper middle class.
- 30:38He probably moved to LA or something, but I think he did.
- 30:42I think he did just fine. And you think he's happy and
- 30:46fulfilled? Yeah, yeah.
- 30:48OK. Because again, like I keep
- 30:51talking about my husband, but my husband is this like very just
- 30:54like naturally happy person, just like the outlook is always
- 30:58pretty good. He's always just having a good
- 31:00time. And he'll tell, He'll tell you.
- 31:02Like, it's not that easy. I have to really try.
- 31:04Some days are harder than others, but I always just try to
- 31:06look for the positive. And so I see a lot of that in
- 31:09the Ferris Bueller attitude is like, it is truly, it is.
- 31:13It is a choice attitude, but also I truly believe people are
- 31:16born with the kernel of who they really are.
- 31:20And I identify Cameron so much more and with Jeannie, with his
- 31:25sister. Like totally.
- 31:26I would love to be the Ferris Bueller.
- 31:28Yeah, wouldn't we? Or I'd.
- 31:29Love to be Sloane Peterson who's like, just effortlessly
- 31:33gorgeous. Just.
- 31:35So cool, so cool. But like, I am a Cameron genie.
- 31:39Nihilist, cynical, angry, of course, bratty person.
- 31:44Her brattiness, Jeannie's brattiness is like, it informed
- 31:47so much of who I was as a teenager, and I didn't realize
- 31:50until watching it again. And I was like, this is how I
- 31:52acted all the time. It's so funny too, 'cause she's
- 31:54still likable even though she's, oh, you love her, we love her.
- 31:58I love her, 'cause she's like rooting for her, you know, she's
- 32:01overacting like all the time. Like everything's super
- 32:04dramatic. The phone, the phone call to the
- 32:06police. I'm very cute.
- 32:09I am very alone and I'm very protective of my body.
- 32:13It's so like, I don't know, it's just she's, she's such a good
- 32:17visceral character. Yeah, but I mean, she and Ferris
- 32:20both kind of, I think they're both self-centered.
- 32:25Oh yeah, you know, but it most. Just as characters are,
- 32:27honestly. Of course you got to be.
- 32:29So I mean, if a, if a character is always thinking of other
- 32:33people, what are they? What's that character Boring?
- 32:36They're boring. If you're obsessed with everyone
- 32:39else, then you're just the Dean of students.
- 32:42You're which I also love that basically they show us that his
- 32:46job is so unimportant that he can leave the office and just
- 32:50and try and track. Down kind of Dick around all
- 32:53day. You know what, let's talk about
- 32:55him really quick because I think that's the where that did that
- 32:57age well question comes very prominently and I wanted to talk
- 33:00about this at the top. But so Jeffrey Jones that plays
- 33:05Ed Rooney, the principal unfortunately is a the sexual
- 33:10predator was caught with child sexual abuse materials
- 33:13soliciting a minor. So that part of this did not age
- 33:17well. When he's like sneaking into the
- 33:19house, when he's going in the dog, the door, when he's sort of
- 33:23like, you know, sneaking up on an underage girl.
- 33:27Yeah, it. Changes the child.
- 33:29That really kind of changes the context.
- 33:31But I will say, like, I know this separating art from the
- 33:35artist is like not a conversation I want to have
- 33:37right now. But he does play this character
- 33:40character so well that it is like becomes an archetype of a
- 33:45school principal, yes, like you see him in other principals
- 33:49later on. Yes.
- 33:50And I and I and his interplay with his secretary Grace is like
- 33:55incredible. Some of the best scenes in that
- 33:59movie. Absolutely, you know.
- 34:01Yes, I love it. I love that he is just.
- 34:04He's been so disempowered by children by.
- 34:10And by his secretary. And by his secretary, who is so
- 34:13county. I love her.
- 34:14She's he's. Like, I don't trust him any
- 34:16farther than I can throw him. And she goes, well, I wouldn't
- 34:18be throwing anybody with your bad back.
- 34:20Yet he makes you look like an ass is what he does it.
- 34:24And she does so good at cutting him down.
- 34:29And yeah, but his like, yeah, his drive to just find this kid
- 34:33that's ruining it's again, it's like all the miserable people
- 34:37let themselves be made miserable by this kid who's having a great
- 34:42time. That like, it's that idea that
- 34:45like someone else having fun is taking something away from you.
- 34:49Yes, this thing, it's the scarcity.
- 34:51Mindset of fun. Rooney and Rooney and Jeannie
- 34:55are on the same trajectory where they're like, I take it
- 34:58personally there he gets to do whatever he wants and it's like,
- 35:02well, maybe you could also do whatever you want.
- 35:04It's really. And that's where Charlie Sheen
- 35:06comes in and says. And says.
- 35:08Kind of a state of mind. Man, yeah, I'm afraid.
- 35:10Guy that's like so cracked out he looks.
- 35:13So busted. He really does.
- 35:15I think that Charlie Sheen just woke up and showed up as is.
- 35:18I know. You know what I mean.
- 35:19He didn't have to go in the makeup chair.
- 35:21They said they were part. That's just go ahead and lean
- 35:24into that. Yeah.
- 35:25Yeah, yeah, exactly. I found that this movie really
- 35:32was not so much about the stuff that happens, the plot, if you
- 35:38will, what a plot, stuff that happens, but if.
- 35:42But it really is more about this sort of like, yeah, I wouldn't
- 35:47call it a hero's journey because I don't think that Ferris really
- 35:50changes that much, but he changes other people around him.
- 35:54Yeah. And that, to me, is like such a
- 35:58cool part of Ferris Bueller's Day Off that Cameron learns how
- 36:02to stand up to his dad. Let his hair down a little.
- 36:05Bit I love their friendship. It is so.
- 36:08You can really see their friendship and that they've been
- 36:11friends for a long time, at least in the storyline.
- 36:13And. And he really understands the
- 36:16world that Cameron has to inhabit.
- 36:19You know, the his house is like a museum.
- 36:22Yeah, very cold. Totally.
- 36:24You can't touch anything. And like, his family's so messed
- 36:27up. You know, that's also a classic.
- 36:29Like John Hughes. It's like, they're like, my
- 36:32parents don't understand me. They're divorced.
- 36:34Yeah, which is again, I I listened to this podcast called
- 36:39Bands playing where she love bands playing.
- 36:42Yes, he saw like it's great. But she so she dissects bands
- 36:46and artists like from their beginning, like from the very
- 36:48beginning. And one of the things that she
- 36:50said, I think it was a quote that she actually got from Time
- 36:52magazine. But it was like, grunge is like
- 36:56the Gen. X is the sound of, you know,
- 36:59kids, kids coming out of divorce.
- 37:02Like, it was that first age group where parents were really
- 37:05like, I mean, the women had the opportunity, Yeah.
- 37:09For the first. Time to get divorced.
- 37:11Yeah. And so I think that's why it
- 37:13plays such a big, it's such a big part of plots in John Hughes
- 37:19movies sometimes or, or, but there's also the nuclear
- 37:21families always together and the parents love each other.
- 37:25And you know, like 16 Candles parents love each other.
- 37:27National Lampoon's parents love each other.
- 37:30Pretty Pink's a little different.
- 37:32And Breakfast Club is a little different because it's really
- 37:34about the teenagers. But it, I think Home Alone is
- 37:38the greatest example of when you're like, it's like the per I
- 37:43mean, these people, we don't even know what they do for a
- 37:46living, but they have an incredible home.
- 37:48Oh, yeah, everybody's happy. Like, I mean, the allegedly, I
- 37:52know it's true. We don't see the dark parts.
- 37:54But like, I mean, Ferris Bueller's parents, like, they're
- 37:57both clueless Ding dongs. Yeah.
- 38:00Although his mom's like the power broker, real estate agent.
- 38:03Totally. But like, yeah, they're, they
- 38:05have very little common sense and they're.
- 38:09They've really failed their ways, their way up, kind of.
- 38:12They're just like hot suburban Chicago people.
- 38:17Who are making great money, yeah, and.
- 38:20They have, they have two kids and a dog and they're just
- 38:24living life, loving life. Yeah, it's interesting the the
- 38:29this archetype of the family that John you sort of put into
- 38:33yeah play. But you're right that the people
- 38:35the troubled kids are usually like from divorce.
- 38:37Divorce. Or as Cameron says, it's like
- 38:40with the car. My dad loves the car and he
- 38:43hates his wife. He doesn't even drive it.
- 38:48He just rubs it with a diaper. And also that I feel I should
- 38:53know the architect of the house that is like Camerons.
- 38:57Bam. Oh yeah, I can't remember.
- 38:58Like a famous house. It's a famous house and that
- 39:01just that showroom that his dad has, you can just feel.
- 39:06You can palpably feel what a absolute Dick Cameron's dad is
- 39:10like. It's the it's the friend's house
- 39:12where you're terrified of their parents.
- 39:14You can't touch anything. Yes, you're like, don't touch
- 39:16that. Don't and like, don't piss off
- 39:18these people's parents. Like totally.
- 39:20I'm sure. I'm sure Ferris is like the
- 39:23nightmare friend to. Cameron's parents, they're
- 39:25always like, you shouldn't be hanging out with that kid who's
- 39:27going to get you in trouble. Yeah, you know.
- 39:29Even though he's like, not really in trouble.
- 39:32Right. He's sort of a little.
- 39:35He's not causing harm. To anyone.
- 39:37That's the thing. Like you know he's causing
- 39:39trouble in like the fun. Way he's not like he's a bad.
- 39:42Kid hurting anyone, right? No one's getting hurt here.
- 39:46No, he's like, he's not like your friend who deals drugs or
- 39:50like you're free. Yeah, totally.
- 39:52He's not like. Not that my friends that dealt
- 39:53drugs are bad. People are lovely people.
- 39:55They're also doing a service that someone's got.
- 39:58It's a job and someone has to do it.
- 40:01All my friends that are drug were drug dealers in high school
- 40:03and college are great parents now.
- 40:05I just want to put that out there, seriously.
- 40:07It takes what it takes, you know what I mean?
- 40:09We all get there. Again, it's not a race, but but
- 40:12it is like, yeah, he's not, he's not hurting anyone.
- 40:16In fact, he's bringing joy to all the strangers that he.
- 40:20Interacts with Let's talk about the parade scene then.
- 40:24Let's talk about the parade. That, that scene, I just want to
- 40:29say I hadn't watched this movie in a long time.
- 40:31And again, this was my comfort movie as a kid.
- 40:34We, so we, we had a little video store of the street from our
- 40:38house about 3 blocks called Video Movie madness.
- 40:41Jim and his husband, I can't remember his name, ran it.
- 40:44It was like our haven. They were friends with our
- 40:46parents. We could rent whatever there was
- 40:48a room, we could rent whatever we wanted.
- 40:50Like they, they knew and also like we would rent movies for
- 40:53like weeks and he would call and be like, hey, someone else wants
- 40:57to rent that movie. Could you please send one of
- 40:59your kids up with it 'cause I need to rent it.
- 41:03But we would rent Ferris Bueller's Day off.
- 41:05I can't believe we didn't buy it.
- 41:06We just rented it all the time and.
- 41:08Why would you buy it when you can have it for free?
- 41:11But. We want, we paid like 199 or
- 41:14whatever, and then we had it for three weeks.
- 41:16But the parade scene was always my favorite moment as a kid.
- 41:20And we'd get on the coffee table and we'd dance like with Ferris.
- 41:24But watching that scene again as an adult, I had this like
- 41:27unexpected reaction where I started bawling and I was like,
- 41:31whoa, what is going on? And I was like, unpacked.
- 41:35Well, it was just so much feeling about how much I enjoyed
- 41:38this movie as a kid. But then I was watching it and I
- 41:40was like, it's one of those, it's one of those pop culture
- 41:43moments that's like trying to it's reminds you that this the
- 41:4680s and 90s, like we see no color, everybody's beautiful and
- 41:50the same kind of thing because they do this like pan of Chicago
- 41:55and you see all these different types of people dancing
- 41:57together. Yeah, it is very like it's the
- 42:00first time in the first of all, it's the first time in the movie
- 42:02that we see. See black people that's a well
- 42:05we see one other black we see two other black folks because we
- 42:08see a black student in Ben Stein's class and we see the
- 42:13black nurse, but that is one of the did not age with.
- 42:16Forgot about, but it's forgot about her fucking Chicago.
- 42:19It's Chicago that seems stuck out to me in a way, because I
- 42:23said, oh, now this actually looks like Chicago, You know
- 42:27what I mean? It's like, it's like how white
- 42:29Seinfeld makes New York. Exactly.
- 42:31It's the same thing. It's like Chicago, Yugo is
- 42:33historically a black city. It's like a black cultural city
- 42:38and we don't you're right. It's when we actually see the
- 42:41most black folks and that was one of the did not age.
- 42:43Wells for me was there's not a lot of black people in a movie
- 42:46about Chicago. About Chicago.
- 42:48Like that's why I was, I was so glad when finally it was like,
- 42:53there was there was this like group of people.
- 42:56I won't call them a choir because they weren't.
- 42:59A dance group. It was a dance group, I.
- 43:01Love the dance group. I that was immediately when I
- 43:03started crying as I was like, oh, this is me.
- 43:06I remember feeling this enjoying this scene so much watching
- 43:10people dance together in unison. But it is, it's a like, it's a
- 43:14black dance group, you see, like.
- 43:17At the German American parade. What is even that?
- 43:21Parade. I love it.
- 43:23I love that there was a German American parade in the middle of
- 43:26the week. That's the other thing is like
- 43:29it's like on a Wednesday or something like what is going on?
- 43:33And then the like the girls on the float just like go ape shit
- 43:37crazy like flipping their skirts up and down.
- 43:39Also, did you know that Donka shade in that version is by
- 43:42Wayne Newton? What?
- 43:44When he was like a kid, I thought it was Brenda Lee, but I
- 43:48googled it and it's in the credits.
- 43:50Wow. Yeah.
- 43:51That is news to me. It's.
- 43:53Bizarre. Bizarre.
- 43:54But yeah, that parade scene. That parade.
- 43:57Scene well that's so beautiful that you had a moment to really.
- 44:01I was like examining myself. I was like, why am I crying?
- 44:04What is going on? But it was just like.
- 44:07Sometimes you just need to. It just unlocked a thing that I
- 44:10was like oh man I have not felt this in so long.
- 44:13I forgot how much this movie. It's so beautiful to see people
- 44:18gather together. Yeah, that was the other thing.
- 44:20Marching and having a parade for fun.
- 44:24I think especially in the, I mean, this is like any moment in
- 44:28history, to be fair, but like the the feeling of divisiveness
- 44:32in the moment that we're in right now and the fact that like
- 44:34people are genuinely terrified to leave their homes.
- 44:38I agree with you. When I saw that, I was like, oh,
- 44:40the carefreeness of this moment. This very also pre 911 moment 2
- 44:48is like this just, I don't know, this unity is this like unity?
- 44:53And like how often do we mutually enjoy something in a
- 44:58public space where there's not people aren't afraid to dance.
- 45:02And yes, there was so much good, weird, funny dancing happening.
- 45:06Yeah, a lot of choreographs. Like everyone, the entire city
- 45:11of Chicago is dancing. People can hear the music from
- 45:15the 17th floor of the office building.
- 45:18You know what I mean? His dad's, his dad's like, yeah.
- 45:22And everyone's just dancing and having fun.
- 45:25And that's not to say that that, like, public demonstrations
- 45:29aren't important. You know, it's like, we got to
- 45:32get, we got to get out in the streets when we need to fight
- 45:36against things. But to see people gathered for
- 45:40the German American parade, they're not there.
- 45:44They're not protesting anything. And then here to watch a
- 45:47teenager lip sync. Yeah, to it's twisted.
- 45:51Out yeah just to just to be like look we're all having fun on a
- 45:55weekday I and we are in Chicago I love what the Chicago of it
- 46:00all I mean it's so. John, it feels like a very love
- 46:03letter to Chicago movie, too, because you see these scenes,
- 46:07you know, like the museum scenes and the even the restaurants and
- 46:11the drive, you know, the the driving.
- 46:14They're on the lake. Yeah, I forgot about that part.
- 46:17They're on the lake at the very end.
- 46:18Cameron's like. Catatonic.
- 46:21And then weirdly Sloan's like, did you watch me change out of
- 46:23my clothes? And he was like.
- 46:24Yeah, I was like. Why did we have to do that?
- 46:27This bumped me out and I also I really didn't like how they made
- 46:32like Sloan make the eyes at her boyfriend's dad she's.
- 46:37Like. I'm like, you didn't need to do
- 46:40that. They I mean that's that is a
- 46:42failure is like the she doesn't get she doesn't get a full
- 46:47character, which is not uncommon for movies not.
- 46:50Uncommon for those girls, but I mean she's like.
- 46:54But you still get a sense of who she is.
- 46:56And that's something else I would say is sort of timeless or
- 47:01like something that really ages well in that movie is if you
- 47:03look at Cameron Ferris and Sloan's outfits, they're way
- 47:09cooler than they don't look super 80s.
- 47:12None of them have super 80s hairdos.
- 47:16I I would say Jeannie like has the most 80s ish outfit of like
- 47:19a main character. But I those 3 outfits you could
- 47:24wear today and they would look awesome.
- 47:26You could have worn them in the 90s and they would look awesome.
- 47:29I just like, I love. I don't know who did the costume
- 47:32design, but it's one of the. Yeah, the costume design and the
- 47:36fact that I think one of the hardest things to do as a
- 47:39costume designer is is to work on a movie where it all takes
- 47:43place in one day. Yeah.
- 47:45And the the way that they nailed it that that the costumes
- 47:48captured everything that they needed to about each character.
- 47:52Yes, in one day. So cool.
- 47:55It's so cool 'cause like her fringe jacket is very 80s, but
- 48:00she's got this like timeless hairdo and like her, I don't
- 48:04know, it's just like it. She just it, it, it exudes how
- 48:08cool the characters are. Even Cameron is.
- 48:11You can tell Cameron cool. You can tell Cameron has good
- 48:14music taste. Like, you can just tell.
- 48:16I mean, Ferris is, is more obvious because the way they,
- 48:19they decorate his room, there's like a Carrie Voltaire poster
- 48:22and a damned poster and like a Simple Minds poster.
- 48:24And you're like, this guy's the coolest, definitely the coolest
- 48:27kid at school. Totally.
- 48:28But then you see his outfits and it's like that.
- 48:31I love that vest. The vest.
- 48:34The vest with a white shirt. Yeah.
- 48:37And he looks he's on a parade. He's on a parade.
- 48:40He looks amazing. It looks like a gap ad almost.
- 48:43It's like, so I don't know, it's so timeless and just like
- 48:47looking back at other movies of that era, it's just not time
- 48:51stamped that way. And it also, I think it a lot of
- 48:5580s movies are time stamped in the idea that there is one type
- 49:00of popular guy like Ferris Bueller, even though he is, you
- 49:04know, he meets all of these conventions of like, you know, a
- 49:07guy who can get away with stuff. Like we already said, he's like
- 49:09a white rich kid in the Chicago suburbs.
- 49:11He's good looking, all of that, but like he isn't the like, you
- 49:16know, he's not meeting the he's. Kind of an everyman.
- 49:20Yeah, he's a very. Rare like he's a guy that you
- 49:24could see hanging out with like the drama kids, but also could
- 49:27was friends with the football players, the sluts, the geeks,
- 49:31the Bordos, motorheads, bloods. They all adore him.
- 49:36And it's truly like, yeah, he's really like the campus everyman.
- 49:40And yeah, that is such a thing that usually in the 80s, it's
- 49:44always like the nerd. There's just always, you know,
- 49:47the the John Cusack's or there's Matthew Broderick, which is like
- 49:54kind of surprising when I he's the most cool he will ever be in
- 50:00that movie. To me, I think that character is
- 50:02like the most cool, but it is like the, IT is, again, an
- 50:05archetype of this effortlessly cool teenager.
- 50:10It's like almost like a James Deanie, Dylan McKay kind of
- 50:13thing. But he's not a jerk.
- 50:14And he's not, yeah, he's not like sort of elusive or like,
- 50:19you know what I mean? He's like, he's popular.
- 50:20He's like, I don't know how to explain it, but he's, he's not
- 50:23student council, but he's like, he's like the, I don't know.
- 50:26He's like, he doesn't feel a sense of obligation to anybody
- 50:32but his friends. Like he feel, he's kind of like,
- 50:35you know, he does what he wants whenever he wants to, but he
- 50:40doesn't have anyone who is trying to cut down.
- 50:43He's not going to put people in harm's way in order to like get
- 50:49what he wants. And he's it's not at the expense
- 50:51of other people other than like the adults who are.
- 50:54Right. But it's not like Jake Ryan and
- 50:5716 Candles who's just like kind of a piece of shit Jack guy
- 51:01who's hot and has a nice car. Totally.
- 51:04You know, and it's like, well, you definitely had to like you,
- 51:07you've. Had bad behavior.
- 51:08He's picked on people. Yeah, totally.
- 51:10Ferris doesn't pick on people. Ferris Bueller does not pick on
- 51:13people. He does not punch down, No, he
- 51:16does not punch down and I love that about him.
- 51:18Yeah, I think that's also what makes him a really likable,
- 51:22again, a timeless character. That's why we root for him.
- 51:25Yeah, You know, that's why we still root for him.
- 51:27That's why we're like, we don't want him to get caught.
- 51:30If he was Jake Ryan, I would be like, I want that piece of shit
- 51:33to get caught. I'm sorry.
- 51:34I'd be like, he's hot, but he deserves to.
- 51:36Be humbled Jake Ryan treats his girlfriend like shit.
- 51:40Yeah, like pimps her out for date rape.
- 51:42Oh my God, again, I'm sorry that I said that is my favorite John
- 51:46Hughes movie, 16 Candles, but it's pretty gnarly when you get.
- 51:51Down Oh, it is. People ask me all the time, like
- 51:54what's a movie that aged bad? And I you're like, go always say
- 51:5816 candles 16. Candles.
- 51:59Revenge of the Nerds? Yeah.
- 52:01It's tough. To watch, yeah, tough to watch.
- 52:04But this movie doesn't have that.
- 52:06No, it really doesn't. Again, there's like no random
- 52:08boobs. There's no like anti feminist, I
- 52:13don't know, like jokes. There's no.
- 52:17It's truly sort of apolitical, It really is, in an interesting
- 52:21way. They're at the German American
- 52:23parade having a blast. They're not.
- 52:26They're it's a very like, I think because Ferris Bueller is
- 52:32sort of an everyman. Yeah.
- 52:35He is. He's someone who we all want to
- 52:38root for. We want him to have a good day.
- 52:41We also don't want him to get caught.
- 52:43We also love all of the the like sort of pranks that he sets up
- 52:47to to facilitate his day. The the ending, the ending chase
- 52:55scene is like one of the best parts of the movie, frankly.
- 52:59But like you're like, you know, you're like, Oh my God, is he
- 53:02good? Even though you've seen it,
- 53:03You're like, you know. You still are like, oh, what are
- 53:06we going to do? Also, I didn't realize until I
- 53:09was like researching for this conversation that that is not
- 53:13like a sound design for the movie.
- 53:16That is an English beat song that like, and I really did not
- 53:22realize it was like an actual song.
- 53:23But there's also, in true John Hughes fashion, there's sound
- 53:27effects layered on top, of course, that make it work so
- 53:29good. But that the choreography of
- 53:32that chase scene. Is perfect.
- 53:35Again, it's the John Hughes hijinks.
- 53:37Yes, there's got to be a goofy chase scene.
- 53:41Where like all these different things have to happen in the
- 53:43right timing for it to work. And like the his mom screaming
- 53:48at Jeannie while she's driving like a total lunatic.
- 53:51And Jeannie's just like on cloud 9 because she just met the
- 53:54hottest weird guy she's ever met in her life.
- 53:57And then, and then you then they go over to the dad who's just
- 53:59like behind the the grandma. Also, elderly people in John
- 54:04Hughes movies are the butt of like every.
- 54:06They are. They are just disposable.
- 54:08They are totally disposable. Lol she's old old the.
- 54:13Lady driving and she can't see over the steering wheel but like
- 54:17all that is happening in succession.
- 54:18Or like when he jumps the fence and there's like hot girls
- 54:22sunbathing. Yeah, again, it's a weekday.
- 54:25It's a weekday. But I don't care because it's
- 54:28like we're a little removed from reality.
- 54:30Yeah, for sure. Enough.
- 54:32Enough removed that you're not. I'm not in the moment being
- 54:36like. But they wouldn't be there.
- 54:37It's a weekday. Yeah, you're like, oh, wait, of
- 54:39course he has to go back and charm someone.
- 54:41Of course, for a second, Ferris Bueller, hi.
- 54:43Nice to meet you. Ferris Bueller keeps going.
- 54:46It's so good. Yeah.
- 54:47Oh, it, it really is. I OK, I have to return to one
- 54:53other thing that I completely forgot, and it's really not that
- 54:56big of a deal. But again, when we're talking
- 54:58about Ferris Bueller's Day Off, there's not a ton to criticize
- 55:03when they're going up to the garage attendant who's going to
- 55:07be watching the car and the first thing he says is, do you
- 55:09speak English? I was like, bitch, I know.
- 55:13That also, again, felt like a very 80s.
- 55:16There's actually 2 moments where that happens because Jeannie
- 55:19screams screams at the 911 operator as well.
- 55:23And that is such a white person thing to do.
- 55:28To be like this guy is working class.
- 55:30Also, it's like another vaguely white.
- 55:32Guy like he's a white president I guess.
- 55:34Is he vaguely ethnic? Too right?
- 55:36I don't know. But I do love that he goes.
- 55:38What country do you think this is?
- 55:43And he's, I mean that. That guy's such a good character
- 55:45actor. I was looking him up.
- 55:46I can't remember his name, but he was the original drummer for
- 55:49Sonic Youth. No way.
- 55:50I know weird stuff. So cool, weird stuff.
- 55:52OK, you know what I also loved is when he and his friend OK one
- 55:55of the other black people in this movie.
- 55:57Yes, the other, the other, the one other Lieutenant guy, Yeah.
- 56:01OK, so they're driving in the car, they're having a joyride.
- 56:05And his friend is the one that at first looks terrified.
- 56:09And then his his look turns into Glee.
- 56:13He's joyful. And it's like no matter what, at
- 56:17any age, at any stage in life, you're going to have your Ferris
- 56:20Bueller's and your Camerons. And one of them is going to be
- 56:23scared. And one of them is going to be
- 56:24like, OK, let's just do this. And a joyride is going to be a
- 56:28blast no matter who you are, where you are.
- 56:31And it's come from everyone. Everyone's going to have that
- 56:36moment. Feeling of like, yeah, we're
- 56:38doing something we're not supposed to do, but it's like
- 56:40really not hurting anybody. So also it's again, John Hughes
- 56:46movies are a lot of series of vignettes and that is another
- 56:49one of those where you could see a scene with those guys and not
- 56:52need to know anything else about the movie.
- 56:53Also I feel like do they play like the Star Wars theme?
- 56:57Now I can't. Remember feel like when they're
- 56:58first like taking the car and taking it out and it's like
- 57:02another one of those like audio cues that John Hughes does to be
- 57:05like totally, this is going to be fun, this out of the.
- 57:09And it is. And it's just a moment with
- 57:11these two characters that we don't know anything about.
- 57:12Yeah, that's one thing I love too about John Hughes movies is
- 57:15side characters are so interesting even when they
- 57:18don't. Maybe they have 3 lines or maybe
- 57:21the the girl that picks up the phone and talks to Ferris
- 57:24Bueller or the two guys that are like they get the phone first.
- 57:27He's like, oh shit, I hope Ferris isn't really going to die
- 57:30because he's going to Get Me Out of summer school.
- 57:32And you're like, I want to know more about that guy.
- 57:34Like the side characters are almost as good as like they
- 57:39could be their own thing. Exactly.
- 57:41Like there could be a spin off about any person in this movie.
- 57:45Oh totally. And you know what?
- 57:46I'm so glad this reminds me when I said spin off.
- 57:50I'm so glad that there is no sequel.
- 57:52I. Agree.
- 57:53If this movie had a sequel it would suck.
- 57:55And actually, I think that they tried to do a sitcom in the 90s
- 58:00and it was like based on Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
- 58:03Obviously John Hughes was not involved at all, but it flopped,
- 58:06obviously. And I think that it's just like
- 58:09this. I don't think that Ferris
- 58:11Bueller's Day Off could get made today because it the breaking of
- 58:16the 4th wall doesn't really happen in feature films anymore.
- 58:19It's really more of like a TV mockumentary thing.
- 58:23Something like this wouldn't get funded because it's just one
- 58:26stand alone piece. It has no potential for sequels.
- 58:30Especially at the level that John Hughes was making movies at
- 58:33versus like this would be like a more already, I don't know,
- 58:36early Wes Anderson level film if it was going to be made in
- 58:40current day. Right.
- 58:41But I agree with you. Yeah, it just could not.
- 58:44How would you sell? This.
- 58:45How would you sell it? The way that people sell similar
- 58:49movies is by saying, oh, it's like Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
- 58:52Like it's yeah, no, I mean it. Truly is.
- 58:54That's a really good point. And yeah, I agree, the stand
- 58:57alone nature of it is what makes it really beautiful because you
- 58:59don't need to know anything else.
- 59:01And I don't want to. I'm not curious.
- 59:03I love the I love the look into this world that I get for one
- 59:08one day. And I it's there's it's just one
- 59:13of those things that was like written and it doesn't need to
- 59:15be expounded upon anymore. And I also read that like John
- 59:18Hughes wrote the 1st 50 pages of this the script in one night
- 59:23because there was an in a writers strike coming.
- 59:25Yeah, so he was just like. Excuse me, Let me just make this
- 59:29fucking amazing movie, Yeah. In like a week, he was just
- 59:32like, all right, here it is. And and it's yeah, I I never
- 59:36thought about that, but you're totally right.
- 59:37I don't want anymore. I don't want more, I just.
- 59:39Want this? The fact is this is a movie
- 59:42about a specific moment in time that is so fleeting.
- 59:46And it's really like, you got to make the most of it.
- 59:48It's it is Carpe diem. Yeah.
- 59:50And if we add on to it, it completely ruins the the entire
- 59:56concept that we started with, which was you're young and you
- 59:59got to like, live it up on this last day.
- 1:00:01This is your last year. It's senior year.
- 1:00:04You can't. You can't follow that up.
- 1:00:06Like I don't want to know what the fallout of Camerons daddy's
- 1:00:10car going through the window. I don't want to know what
- 1:00:15happens with Jeannie and Charlie Sheens character.
- 1:00:19His name is Garth Volbek or something.
- 1:00:21I'm good to Google. I know.
- 1:00:23Which is great because he was actually had a whole Side Story
- 1:00:25that they cut. Oh yeah, the director's cut of
- 1:00:28this was originally it was like 2 1/2 hours, which honestly I
- 1:00:31could have watched. I I mean I could, but this is
- 1:00:34where every good piece of art has had editing done to it I
- 1:00:38think. I agree and.
- 1:00:41The editing on this movie made it perfect because it didn't
- 1:00:44need to be. We didn't need anymore.
- 1:00:46Right, like I, I remember reading that there was a deleted
- 1:00:49scene where they ate like French food where they were like you
- 1:00:52gross and they ain't pancreas. And that's why when he says in
- 1:00:57the limo, we ate pancreas, not the limo.
- 1:01:00In the cab. Yeah, in the cab.
- 1:01:02I'm mixing up Home Alone 2 of course with of course, of course
- 1:01:06we need pizza in a common mistake.
- 1:01:10So yeah. And he says like we ate pancreas
- 1:01:13and it's not I'm not like, wait, what?
- 1:01:15I didn't see that. It's like.
- 1:01:17We knew they went to a fancy restaurant and the best part of
- 1:01:20that is not what they were eating, it was that he had that
- 1:01:23interaction with the the maitre. D Yeah, exactly.
- 1:01:28Abe Froman The sausage. The sausage of Chicago to get
- 1:01:33Snooty. Yeah, he's.
- 1:01:35So that's again a side character I would watch more of.
- 1:01:38I want to watch more about that. I would watch.
- 1:01:40I want to watch that man run that restaurant.
- 1:01:42Me too. I want to know.
- 1:01:45I want to know who his boss is. I want to know what made him
- 1:01:47like that. You know what I mean?
- 1:01:48Yeah. I want to know more about him.
- 1:01:50I want to see a day in the life. I want to see his day.
- 1:01:53He's such a good character. It's so good.
- 1:01:56He's. Like I took a bunch of notes,
- 1:01:58I'm trying to think if. There's any?
- 1:01:59Yeah, Let's see. Let's see what else we we might
- 1:02:02need to. Oh OK, I watched again.
- 1:02:06I watched this last night. My husband didn't tell me till
- 1:02:09after we watched it that it was the first time he'd watched it.
- 1:02:12No way. And the funniest part is he
- 1:02:14goes, I thought this was the movie where the guy stands
- 1:02:17outside with the boom box and I was like, this is where our six
- 1:02:22year age difference is so painful to me.
- 1:02:24Where I'm like, I am Gen. X and you are a millennial.
- 1:02:29But my son, my 4 year old, goes, mom, why are grown-ups going to
- 1:02:33high school? And I was like, well, they're
- 1:02:38playing teenagers and like, it's always bad.
- 1:02:42I mean, Greece is like the greatest example of like 40 year
- 1:02:45olds in high school. But like, I was reading Sloan
- 1:02:48was the actress that put me as Sarah.
- 1:02:51I was 18. Yeah, but.
- 1:02:53I think she was. The youngest of she was 'cause I
- 1:02:55think various or Matthew Roderick's like 26.
- 1:03:00Or yeah, mid 20s and then Alan, Alan Ruck.
- 1:03:05Yeah, Alan Ruck. He was, he's, I mean, he's a
- 1:03:07babyface though. He was.
- 1:03:09He was. 29 it's so. Funny.
- 1:03:12It's like Andrea nine O 2 and O, who was 30 when she was.
- 1:03:16It's like, but he looked the most like a high schooler out of
- 1:03:19everybody. Yeah, he does.
- 1:03:20He does have a babyface, but I did find that funny.
- 1:03:22When my son pointed that on, I was like.
- 1:03:25Yeah, movies. This is how movies go, son.
- 1:03:27Sometimes, you know, sometimes your 4 year old is the one who
- 1:03:31says the wisest. He's a real truth.
- 1:03:33Mom, I love that. I love that about kids.
- 1:03:38Oh, you know, I, I did read that there was an earlier version of
- 1:03:44the movie that Sloan said to Cameron something they were like
- 1:03:50talking about their future. And they got very low scores
- 1:03:54among young female varies for viewers during the screen test
- 1:04:00where she said a girl can always bail out and have a baby and get
- 1:04:03some guy to support her. And they were like, oh, everyone
- 1:04:07hated that. And they were like, oh, it was
- 1:04:09meant to be an ironic criticism of gender politics, one of the
- 1:04:13producers said. But.
- 1:04:14You're like, but you don't give her enough.
- 1:04:16For us to. Work off of as a character for
- 1:04:18it to know if that would be. How would we know that?
- 1:04:21That's ironic. How would we know?
- 1:04:22Yeah, we don't get. We don't know her.
- 1:04:24She is woman like. Honestly I thought she was
- 1:04:27French when I was a kid because she doesn't really talk that
- 1:04:31much and she has a kind of a weird accent.
- 1:04:34Not really. She's from New York.
- 1:04:35Yeah, but like, you just don't get that much from her.
- 1:04:38That would have bummed me out. Yeah, so I'm glad that they, I'm
- 1:04:42glad that they did that because she she didn't have to be put
- 1:04:49into that little box and the test, the young female test
- 1:04:54scores went up 40 points when after that when they were
- 1:04:59moving. So yeah, pretty cool that by
- 1:05:02cutting a single line they made it way better.
- 1:05:06Because I mean, I think you would remember that line and be
- 1:05:08like, wait a minute. What?
- 1:05:10Why did she say that? Like it's like even the the
- 1:05:12conversation they have when they're in the Stock Exchange
- 1:05:16and he's like, you want to get married?
- 1:05:17And she's like, no. And he's like, I mean, other
- 1:05:19than you being the only cheerleader with a husband, it
- 1:05:21wouldn't be that weird. And I was like, OK, this is
- 1:05:24pretty cute. Yeah, it was funny it.
- 1:05:26Feels like kind of cute, although I never at any point
- 1:05:30other in that point in the movie think that Ferris is that
- 1:05:32serious about her. No, you know, and I mean, I
- 1:05:36think that because he is so laissez faire about everything
- 1:05:39in life when he does that 4th wall break and says, you know,
- 1:05:43and I would marry her, but you know.
- 1:05:46I probably won't. The 4th wall breaking is
- 1:05:49interesting, yeah. I.
- 1:05:51Almost forgot about it until I watched it again as a really and
- 1:05:55I was like wow this is a strange thing.
- 1:05:59That was something I was going to ask you as actually, I mean,
- 1:06:03now we're coming up on an hour, it probably could be a perfect
- 1:06:06time to ask you cancel or call back the 4th wall break.
- 1:06:12Do we need to bring that back in our movies?
- 1:06:15I'm trying to remember when else it works well, I don't I don't I
- 1:06:21don't have enough. I don't watch a ton of movies.
- 1:06:24And the person that watches the same 5.
- 1:06:25It's so funny. You had one of my best friends,
- 1:06:27Keith Garcia on and he has like gently forced me to watch
- 1:06:32somebody else. He's so good at it.
- 1:06:35But he also will be like, I'm going to tell you the plot of
- 1:06:38this movie because I know that you won't go see it.
- 1:06:41And I'm like you are correct. He knows you.
- 1:06:44He's, he's just, he's just my, he's my gateway to so.
- 1:06:48So I love to tell him all the movies I've never seen.
- 1:06:50Because he's like, he's like your, your movie fairy
- 1:06:53godmother. He isn't, He doesn't judge me
- 1:06:56for not having. He's not like, Oh my God, you
- 1:06:58haven't seen. He's like, that's why.
- 1:07:00He is the one who should be the like doing what he does because
- 1:07:06you know what if if I was like, Oh, well, you know, the person
- 1:07:09who picks the movies for the C Film Center is going to be like,
- 1:07:12you haven't seen blah. Blah blah.
- 1:07:14He has none of that. None of.
- 1:07:16That so he just wants to share because he just loves it and he.
- 1:07:20Contextualizes movies and so and I just brought him up because
- 1:07:23I'm like, God, he's probably would listen to this and be
- 1:07:25like, there's 10 movies I know off the top of his.
- 1:07:28Head of his head, he'd be like, in the past three years.
- 1:07:31These are the movies that. Yeah.
- 1:07:32You know, I'm trying to think when it happens, but what I
- 1:07:36thought about that part of the movie was it could, I could take
- 1:07:39or leave it and it wouldn't matter.
- 1:07:41I think that it it works, but it's not.
- 1:07:44It doesn't detract from it in any way, but it's not
- 1:07:47necessarily I wouldn't, I wouldn't miss it.
- 1:07:50I also felt pretty neutral about it.
- 1:07:52Like I think that it's fun, It's something a little different.
- 1:07:55And I think that the way that they incorporate it into like
- 1:07:58the post credits where it's like the movie's over, you know, it's
- 1:08:00still here. It's just like it's cute.
- 1:08:03It's a cute, funny little thing that brings a little bit more
- 1:08:06joy to the movie, but I don't know that it adds so much that I
- 1:08:11would really miss it if it was gone.
- 1:08:13Yeah, 'cause it's like a lot of like procedural him just telling
- 1:08:16you how he's doing things, like, especially with like the how
- 1:08:19he's tricking his parents. Like the part where he's like,
- 1:08:22oh, don't you don't want to go with a fever that'll end you.
- 1:08:24And you get, you got a nervous mom.
- 1:08:26You end up in the doctor's office.
- 1:08:27And like, it is pretty funny, but it it's like, yeah, I don't
- 1:08:31know. I don't know if it's necessary.
- 1:08:33Yeah, it's cute though. It's cute.
- 1:08:34And the singing in the shower part, obviously.
- 1:08:37And like his comments on fascism and like, which is also kind of
- 1:08:41empty commentary, but it's still like pretty cute.
- 1:08:44It's cute. I guess you get a little.
- 1:08:46I think if if Ferris Bueller wasn't so, if the character in
- 1:08:49Matthew Broderick in this moment wasn't like so cute and likable,
- 1:08:53it might be annoying. It would be annoying if he
- 1:08:55wasn't likable because of course, when you're watching
- 1:08:57this, you're like, oh, I want that guy to be my friend.
- 1:09:00Totally. And so I understand the appeal
- 1:09:02of being like, oh, it's like he's talking to me.
- 1:09:04Yeah, yeah. But.
- 1:09:07But is it something that I hope film makers bring back?
- 1:09:11I'm. I don't know that I need it.
- 1:09:13I think it's kind of fun when they do, but I just it's it's
- 1:09:18only done well every so often. Yeah, a lot of the time I think
- 1:09:23that when I see a fourth wall break, it makes me think of, no
- 1:09:26offense, The Disney Channel, sure, where they're like, I bet
- 1:09:29you wonder how I got here. I have a sister who's my
- 1:09:34sister's always 14 years younger than me and she's like Disney
- 1:09:37Channel era kid. And it's so funny because she
- 1:09:39grew up on all that shit. And I'm like, I cannot watch
- 1:09:44this stuff. Yeah, I just can't.
- 1:09:45But also I was like an A teenager, 2 adult when she was
- 1:09:49watching this, right? Yes.
- 1:09:50You know, not her fault, it's not her.
- 1:09:52Fault I like I was literally watching cable be invented so
- 1:09:56she. Got the better.
- 1:09:58Like we were talking about like e-news or something was going
- 1:10:01off the air and I was like, I just want everyone to know that
- 1:10:04I saw the first day that E wow did the channel existed.
- 1:10:09Wow, that's big and it's not your and it's not your younger
- 1:10:14siblings fault for for being for being born.
- 1:10:17Later my first day of high school.
- 1:10:19Yeah, It's not her fault. Not her.
- 1:10:20Fault for that I. Was like oh cool, mom goes into
- 1:10:22labor and she's supposed to take me to school.
- 1:10:24Yeah. Great, Great.
- 1:10:26Thanks a lot, Zoe. Your grandma had to take me to
- 1:10:30school. Yeah, but she's fine.
- 1:10:32My sister is lovely. She's an EMT.
- 1:10:34Yeah, she's out. She's saving peoples lives every
- 1:10:37day. Thank God bless her.
- 1:10:39I know her and my mom. My mom's been an ER nurse for 51
- 1:10:43years. Whoa, yeah, it's pretty crazy.
- 1:10:45And I, I couldn't RIP a Band-Aid off without throwing up.
- 1:10:49I don't know how they do what they do.
- 1:10:51But could not be me. I'm like, I decided to do
- 1:10:55journalism. I'm like, I could write about
- 1:10:58it. I'll report on the accident, but
- 1:11:03I will not be there. Can't look at it, can't hear
- 1:11:06about it. Yeah, totally.
- 1:11:08Yeah. You know, so funny.
- 1:11:10There are some jobs. OK.
- 1:11:12I feel as though sometimes people in writing, in media are
- 1:11:16like, yeah, you know, I'm like the modern truth teller, you
- 1:11:19know, I'm like saving lives by like, you know, bringing the
- 1:11:21news to the people. And it's like there are some
- 1:11:23jobs that are literally more important, like EMTs are.
- 1:11:26Yeah. I'm afraid it's not the same.
- 1:11:28No, you know, an ER nurse is just not the same.
- 1:11:32Truly, I'm like my brother is a mailman, like he delivers your
- 1:11:36mail. Yeah, like you need the mail.
- 1:11:38You need the mail, you don't really need my blog.
- 1:11:41Like I love to think that you do need my blog.
- 1:11:44Yeah, if you're missing my Live Journal or my Myspace blog.
- 1:11:48Totally My Zaga life, my music blog when I was 14.
- 1:11:53Oh, God knows, you know how it goes.
- 1:11:55I do. Oh God, I have so many dead
- 1:11:57blogs. Oh my God, me too.
- 1:11:58I think it would be fun to one day when I've got, you know, a
- 1:12:01few days off. Maybe I'll take a Ferris
- 1:12:03Bueller's Day Off and just try and track down on the Internet
- 1:12:06where. I don't want to see him.
- 1:12:09I even in the. Back.
- 1:12:10I don't need to see any of them. Please don't.
- 1:12:13Don't don't have to, I wrote. So many regrettable things.
- 1:12:16God, I mean, as I did too. As I did too.
- 1:12:20I recently went through a bunch of my old stuff because I'm
- 1:12:22getting ready to do the mortified.
- 1:12:26Show. Oh my God, yeah.
- 1:12:28It's so much fun. Oh my gosh, I cannot wait.
- 1:12:31Oh, it's so fun. So excited.
- 1:12:32But going through some of my old stuff and like the things that I
- 1:12:35wrote in earnest, especially in high school, like a lot of the
- 1:12:38creative work. I'm like girl.
- 1:12:41The self seriousness. The way that the way were.
- 1:12:44You like a poetry person? Or were you all of it?
- 1:12:47All of it the way that any, any adult in my life would have been
- 1:12:51like, yeah, you should go into writing.
- 1:12:53I'm like you guys should've. That's.
- 1:12:57Insane that you've got it. If someone should've stopped me.
- 1:12:59Someone. I can't believe that anyone read
- 1:13:01that and thought, yeah, go ahead.
- 1:13:04I had an editorial called In Defense of the Spice Girls
- 1:13:07published in my school newspaper.
- 1:13:09Incredible. I did mortified and I read my
- 1:13:12diary about amazing. I had a dream that Kurt Cobain
- 1:13:16and I did heroin at the mall. So he's really seriously in love
- 1:13:23with him. Of course he's a Pisces.
- 1:13:25Was a big deal. That's why he feels things like
- 1:13:29that. Yeah.
- 1:13:29And then I went married a Pisces musician, so.
- 1:13:32You know, and he's still alive. Yes, and he's still alive
- 1:13:36because he did not do drugs, hard drugs.
- 1:13:38Thank God. Yeah, thank God.
- 1:13:40People are like, I think your husband's on tour.
- 1:13:41Like, how do you do? I'm like, I actually have like
- 1:13:43the most chill. Yeah, he doesn't.
- 1:13:47He's a, he's like a life of the party guy, but he's not a
- 1:13:49partier. He calls me, tells me what's
- 1:13:51going on. Totally.
- 1:13:53And he's not like a reckless. I don't know.
- 1:13:55I think people think a thing about touring musicians.
- 1:13:58Yeah, they're like, oh, I bet he's and I'm like, he's a
- 1:14:00different guy. It's like he's still the same
- 1:14:03job. It's literally his job.
- 1:14:04He takes it very seriously. He's like good at his job.
- 1:14:08People like, oh, do you go on tour with your husband?
- 1:14:09I'm like, do you go to to work with your husband?
- 1:14:11Right. I don't like, I have a job too.
- 1:14:13Yeah, believe it or not, I have a job.
- 1:14:16It's called Podcast. Casting.
- 1:14:17I don't know if you've ever heard it.
- 1:14:21So my mom's so proud of me. Actually my mom listens to the
- 1:14:23show every day she does which that is so cool except I had to
- 1:14:28tell her to stop giving me feedback every day she's.
- 1:14:33So glad at first I used to, so when I started this podcast, my
- 1:14:36mom would listen to the episodes and it was sweet.
- 1:14:39And then and then I eventually was like really glad when she
- 1:14:44kind of stopped. I could tell when she stopped
- 1:14:46because she like stopped giving feedback.
- 1:14:48And I was like, OK, good. Like I love.
- 1:14:51I just, I was like, I love you Brooke, but I cannot get
- 1:14:54feedback every day. Yeah, and my aunt listens every
- 1:14:56day and she's so sweet, but she'll just text me and she'll
- 1:14:58be like, there wasn't like a sounded like the ad break was in
- 1:15:02a weird place or something. And I'll be like, Oh my God,
- 1:15:05thank you. Like she tells.
- 1:15:06Yeah, totally. I just.
- 1:15:07Yeah, I'm like, I love my family that they're supportive.
- 1:15:11Yes, but I don't. We don't.
- 1:15:14I get enough. I have enough haters.
- 1:15:15I'm good. No, I'm good.
- 1:15:16My family's not haters. Your family's up in the comments
- 1:15:20like this dumb bitch. I've got an EMT like your
- 1:15:23sister. Some of my family members have
- 1:15:26told me that they lurk, like on our subreddits and stuff.
- 1:15:29No way. Yeah.
- 1:15:30Just to see what's going on, 'cause I don't look at that
- 1:15:32stuff. Yeah, totally.
- 1:15:33They're like, I just gotta make sure you're OK.
- 1:15:35Yeah, totally. Make sure no one's like, doxing
- 1:15:37you. Oh, totally.
- 1:15:38Yeah, totally. I've been, I've kind of removed
- 1:15:40myself from the Internet, from that, that level of scrutiny,
- 1:15:44luckily, but I did, I did go through that when I was on
- 1:15:47Twitter. But yeah, you know, but now.
- 1:15:49So yeah. I left Twitter in 2023 after
- 1:15:55being on it since it started 2008.
- 1:15:59Wow, I know, so tragic it is. But you know what?
- 1:16:03It's good to have a life. You know what?
- 1:16:06Now look at us. Look, look at us now.
- 1:16:09We have lives. Not burdened by what?
- 1:16:13People on Twitter. Think I know?
- 1:16:15After someone called me fat for supporting abortion access, I
- 1:16:18was like, you know what? I'm done.
- 1:16:22It's enough. That's enough.
- 1:16:24I'm good. It's fine that you think that,
- 1:16:26but that's not related to my opinion.
- 1:16:28Right. So I mean, but anytime a woman
- 1:16:31has an opinion, she is ugly. Ugly, stupid, fat.
- 1:16:35Yeah. Just like what?
- 1:16:36Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:16:39Thanks. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:16:39I've heard it all. Heard about it.
- 1:16:42Thanks. Thanks a lot.
- 1:16:43New stuff. Thank you.
- 1:16:45Yeah. Well, that's why we have to
- 1:16:47enjoy every moment while we're young.
- 1:16:48That's true. Don't.
- 1:16:50I'm like, I've that ship sailed. Baby, Yeah, sorry guys, you
- 1:16:54cannot hurt me with your words like that.
- 1:16:57I do not care. We just don't care.
- 1:16:59No, but if you do have positive things to say, write a review or
- 1:17:03write something really nice in the comments.
- 1:17:05I think folks don't realize that like nice comments and rating
- 1:17:08and reviewing actually helps us a lot as podcasters.
- 1:17:10It really does. You're probably thinking what I
- 1:17:13don't. I'm not made of money.
- 1:17:14I can't pay you guys. Well, guess what?
- 1:17:17Pay us with your time by taking 30 seconds and writing the
- 1:17:22nicest thing that you can think of.
- 1:17:24Yes, you know, tell and tell a friend.
- 1:17:26And tell a friend and say, I heard the funniest thing the
- 1:17:29other day on this podcast. You'd love it.
- 1:17:34I heard the most interesting piece of news, local news.
- 1:17:37It was fascinating. It was.
- 1:17:38Fascinating. Listen to the interview.
- 1:17:41I'll send it to you. Send them a link.
- 1:17:42Send them a link, please. It's that easy to send them a
- 1:17:45link and then they'll report back to you with the homework
- 1:17:48that they did. And that's like one of the best
- 1:17:49feelings ever is when you send a friend a thing and then they
- 1:17:52tell. You.
- 1:17:53Yeah. Listen to it.
- 1:17:54So use that as a way to bond with your friends, everybody.
- 1:17:57Bree, thank you so much for coming on the show.
- 1:18:00And I want you to know that Ferris Bueller's Day Off was a
- 1:18:04very popular choice right after you were like, we should do it.
- 1:18:08Really. Yeah.
- 1:18:10I had. I had David and his partner on,
- 1:18:13and they were like, oh, can I mortify?
- 1:18:15Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:18:16And they were like, oh, can we do Ferris Bueller's Day Off?
- 1:18:18I said sorry, my girls already claimed it.
- 1:18:22I know I sent you a list of real bananas movies and I like.
- 1:18:25I don't know where she wants to go with this.
- 1:18:27I loved it all. We could have gone in any of
- 1:18:29those directions, but I'm so glad that we went in this one.
- 1:18:31This was such a thank you for inviting me and this was such a
- 1:18:34lovely experience because I don't get the opportunity to
- 1:18:37talk about popular culture in my everyday work life in in an in
- 1:18:42depth way and I don't really ever talk about movies.
- 1:18:44And it was revisiting this movie just brought up so many
- 1:18:48wonderful feelings that just, I don't know, I just I got to
- 1:18:52revisit something from my childhood that I hadn't thought
- 1:18:55about in a long time. And it was really enjoyable.
- 1:18:58It was like a nice it was the research was really fun.
- 1:19:01That is so fun. That's what we want here is fun
- 1:19:04homework. We want best homework.
- 1:19:06We want you to come on this show and say, wow, that was a perfect
- 1:19:09excuse to watch this thing. I love watching.
- 1:19:12I need to talk about the costume design of Ferris Bueller's Day
- 1:19:15Off. Thank you.
- 1:19:15Silly. And I get me a microphone to do
- 1:19:17it. Also, real quick, Louie
- 1:19:20Anderson, Cami, did you notice? OK, I just noticed this.
- 1:19:24I'm sure everybody's like no shit, Bree, but.
- 1:19:27Keith is in the background like. Come on, I'm just, I'm such a
- 1:19:30Louie Anderson fan. I mean, honestly, if if John
- 1:19:33Candy had been in this movie, it would have been perfect.
- 1:19:35Oh my gosh, he's. My I actually have a John Candy
- 1:19:38tattoo. You do?
- 1:19:39Because my old band had a song called John Candy's Long Story
- 1:19:41but I love John Candy's so I love SDTV alum period.
- 1:19:46Me too. But but the Louie Anderson cameo
- 1:19:49is really fun. Also, this is Kristy Swanson's
- 1:19:51first speaking part. Oh, I didn't know.
- 1:19:53That she, I guess she had a non speaking part in like pretty in
- 1:19:56pink or something, but she's Simone.
- 1:19:59Oh yeah, yeah, the beginning. My best friend's sister's
- 1:20:01boyfriend's brother's girlfriend knows this guy who saw this,
- 1:20:04knows this kid who saw Ferris mess on it. 31 flavors last
- 1:20:06night. I guess it's pretty serious.
- 1:20:09Thank you, Simone. No problem whatsoever.
- 1:20:11No problem. Whatsoever and Ben Stein in that
- 1:20:14movie is going God anyway anyway, but the perfect.
- 1:20:16Castings. Those were just like some fun,
- 1:20:18some fun other people we didn't talk about.
- 1:20:20Oh my gosh, yes, there's so so many other fun people that we
- 1:20:23didn't talk about but and so many other fun things.
