- 1:38Speaker 8: Welcome to the Writer's Roundtable with Rusty Burson, Robert Cessna,
- 1:43Speaker 8: and your host, Chip Howard. The Writer's Roundtable is brought
- 1:47Speaker 8: to you by Intec and First Financial Bank.
- 1:51Speaker 5: Welcome in.
- 1:53Speaker 1: And it's a Monday, and Cease has had a terrific weekend.
- 1:57Speaker 1: He is raring to go, ready to go. He's had
- 2:00Speaker 1: a great weekend.
- 2:03Speaker 5: He's in a good mood. Rusty's in a good mood.
- 2:05Speaker 5: So we should have a great show today.
- 2:09Speaker 7: Yeah, well, you know, ain't him in a good game? Oh,
- 2:12Speaker 7: wait a minute. No, they didn't.
- 2:14Speaker 1: See, Cecil's told me the parking was unavailable at Austin
- 2:19Speaker 1: Airport when he flew out Friday.
- 2:21Speaker 5: And I'm going, that's the weirdest thing. I've never heard
- 2:22Speaker 5: of that. And then I went, ah, the Austin City
- 2:25Speaker 5: Limits Festival. He said, yeah, but.
- 2:29Speaker 5: They come from all over the world. It's incredible.
- 2:32Speaker 7: Seven hours, had to wait for the next flight, had
- 2:33Speaker 7: to park in a hotel off about three miles away
- 2:38Speaker 7: and take Uber back.
- 2:39Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:39Speaker 4: Unbelievable. At least you didn't lose as often as Mike
- 2:41Speaker 4: Elko this weekend. As far as I'm concerned, he's 0-3
- 2:45Speaker 4: this week. He lost the game, he lost the press
- 2:48Speaker 4: conference after the game, and he lost the press conference today.
- 2:51Speaker 4: That was crap. I told Chip before this, I was like,
- 2:56Speaker 4: You had all weekend to give that? If you're sorry,
- 3:00Speaker 4: you say you're sorry. He never once said I'm sorry.
- 3:03Speaker 4: He never once said I'm sorry for saying that stupid thing.
- 3:06Speaker 4: You know, we've all said stupid stuff after we're upset.
- 3:10Speaker 4: And you know what? I've done it a lot. The
- 3:12Speaker 4: first thing I do is like, hey, I go back
- 3:14Speaker 4: to that person and say, that was a really dumb
- 3:15Speaker 4: thing I said. I apologize. You caught me at the
- 3:18Speaker 4: wrong time. In the heat of the moment, I was just,
- 3:21Speaker 4: I said something really stupid. And I am very sorry. No,
- 3:24Speaker 4: he didn't come even close to that. I mean, that
- 3:27Speaker 4: was pathetic. It's so, I don't know.
- 3:31Speaker 7: Don't be wishy-washy. Tell us how you feel.
- 3:34Speaker 4: I told Chip, too, this is, to me, what Saturday was.
- 3:39Speaker 4: It was secret newsletter moment.
- 3:40Speaker 10: Oh, wow.
- 3:41Speaker 4: It was losing in four OTs at K-State moments for
- 3:44Speaker 4: your fifth loss in the second half.
- 3:47Speaker 10: It was.
- 3:48Speaker 4: Losing to UCLA. And then making up about a racial letter.
- 3:53Speaker 4: It was Appalachian State. You're going to look back at
- 3:57Speaker 4: this one day and you're going to be like, oh,
- 3:58Speaker 4: there it was. There it was.
- 4:00Speaker 7: I don't know if we can top that, Jim.
- 4:04Speaker 5: Let's go. Let's go home and go eat early.
- 4:08Speaker 11: Well, the deal is I try to see every side.
- 4:15Speaker 11: And Elko's very competitive, and he's very sensitive.
- 4:23Speaker 7: And that's a tough combination.
- 4:26Speaker 4: And he's about as good blocking out the noise as
- 4:29Speaker 4: Reuben Owens is blocking a defensive back on a blitz. Wow.
- 4:34Speaker 7: Wow. Just keep going. Give him the– oh, wait a minute.
- 4:38Speaker 7: He does have a mic. Because– He's had these little
- 4:42Speaker 7: escapades before or whatever. He ran it about the defense
- 4:46Speaker 7: after the Vegas first year.
- 4:47Speaker 5: You wrote about that.
- 4:50Speaker 7: A professional press conference after losing to Texas. It wasn't.
- 4:55Speaker 7: And sometimes, like you said, people around me that really
- 5:01Speaker 7: know me, They go, I don't want to be there
- 5:03Speaker 7: when you have the meltdown. Because when I have a meltdown,
- 5:05Speaker 7: which my family can, I'm not me. I need a
- 5:08Speaker 7: Snickers bar. I do like Snickers. You know, so I
- 5:12Speaker 7: try to give some people a benefit. Because when I
- 5:15Speaker 7: lose it, I lose it. Luckily, I lose it very
- 5:19Speaker 7: few times. But when I lose it, I actually feel good.
- 5:21Speaker 7: Because sometimes you've got to get that out of you.
- 5:24Speaker 7: So trying to see every side differently. And I hope
- 5:28Speaker 7: somebody close to him. You're a coach. You're going to
- 5:31Speaker 7: lose at least 30% of your games probably. You've got
- 5:34Speaker 7: to learn how to handle the losses. You're going to
- 5:37Speaker 7: have bad questions. You're going to have people that hate you.
- 5:40Speaker 7: You're going to have jerks. And he has a rough
- 5:43Speaker 7: time handling that.
- 5:44Speaker 4: Look, I hope I'm wrong about all this moment. I
- 5:48Speaker 4: wasn't upset with the game at all because I expected it.
- 5:50Speaker 4: It was exactly what I expected from the game. I
- 5:52Speaker 4: told Cease leaving here, they're going to lose by 20.
- 5:55Speaker 5: I was wrong.
- 5:55Speaker 4: I missed it by one point. But I was not
- 5:57Speaker 4: surprised at all. When he came out in the press conference,
- 6:00Speaker 4: he had a harmless question. There wasn't even a dressing
- 6:04Speaker 4: message board. He was given a softball.
- 6:07Speaker 7: The last question of the press conference.
- 6:09Speaker 4: Yeah, just to lob up, say, you know, hey, guys,
- 6:11Speaker 4: I know you're frustrated. Stick with us. We'll get this
- 6:14Speaker 4: thing turned around. And everybody would have been happy.
- 6:16Speaker 7: What do you tell your fan base?
- 6:18Speaker 4: Everybody would have been happy. It's an easy question. It
- 6:19Speaker 4: was so easy. But then he had to go off
- 6:22Speaker 4: on some tangent. Now, listen.
- 6:23Speaker 9: Listen.
- 6:24Speaker 4: I've been there like 10, 11 years. I tweeted something
- 6:27Speaker 4: that I probably shouldn't about Jake Spavadal. And, you know,
- 6:31Speaker 4: I've been hard on him. And I said, no, the
- 6:33Speaker 4: problem is not Jake. It's above him. Referring to Kevin Sumlin.
- 6:37Speaker 4: And Tex-Ags tore me apart. I mean, the message boards
- 6:41Speaker 4: basically told me to go wherever, right? So guess what
- 6:44Speaker 4: I did, Chip, for the last 11 years? I've not
- 6:48Speaker 4: gotten on the message boards. I love Tex-Ags radio. I
- 6:51Speaker 4: love what Billy does. I don't go on those message boards. Obviously,
- 6:55Speaker 4: Mike Yelko is. Obviously, Marcel is. Because they're so sensitive.
- 7:00Speaker 4: And it's just, it's like, don't go there. I.
- 7:05Speaker 7: You've got to stay off the message boards.
- 7:07Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 7:07Speaker 7: Because I had some interaction with my readers or whatever,
- 7:12Speaker 7: and they said, I agree with you on this, I
- 7:13Speaker 7: don't agree on that. I said, hey, look, stay off
- 7:16Speaker 7: the message boards, number one. Yep. And once again, it's like,
- 7:21Speaker 7: you know, don't do this. If you're an alcoholic, don't
- 7:24Speaker 7: go down a liquor road.
- 7:26Speaker 13: Right.
- 7:27Speaker 7: And it's like, if you know you're going to be
- 7:29Speaker 7: tempted by anything, don't go there.
- 7:32Speaker 4: Right.
- 7:34Speaker 7: And sometimes human element, we just have to do it.
- 7:37Speaker 7: We know it's going to be there. You know, you
- 7:39Speaker 7: got to go there.
- 7:39Speaker 4: I said it was like, you know, you know, the zappers,
- 7:42Speaker 4: you know, the bugs.
- 7:43Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 7:43Speaker 4: June bugs are drawn to it.
- 7:45Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 7:45Speaker 4: It's kind of like that message boards because a lot
- 7:47Speaker 4: of people are just drawn to it. And my wife said, no, no,
- 7:49Speaker 4: you missed it. It's like Aggies are going to like
- 7:52Speaker 4: flies going to dog poop. They know it's going to stink,
- 7:55Speaker 4: but they can't they can't help it. They're just going
- 7:57Speaker 4: to keep going to it.
- 7:58Speaker 1: That's why people watch NASCAR for the wrecks.
- 8:01Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, you're right.
- 8:02Speaker 7: Okay, funny you should mention, as a kid, we had
- 8:05Speaker 7: a local racetrack. And everybody went there on Friday night,
- 8:11Speaker 7: bike at Speed Hill. And so I got old enough,
- 8:13Speaker 7: some of my neighbors took me. And he goes, you
- 8:15Speaker 7: want to go? And I go, great. And he goes,
- 8:18Speaker 7: you know. Somebody got killed a couple months ago, and
- 8:21Speaker 7: I was probably like 12 or 13 or something else.
- 8:23Speaker 7: I go, wow, you missed all the good stuff. And
- 8:25Speaker 7: he goes, good stuff? What are you talking about? Because
- 8:29Speaker 7: I said someone died. I go, yeah, good point. But,
- 8:32Speaker 7: you know, it's like kids say the darndest things. I
- 8:35Speaker 7: always remember that when everybody looked. I said you missed
- 8:38Speaker 7: the good stuff, you know.
- 8:40Speaker 4: Like Dallas-Fort Worth in the minor league hockey. You remember
- 8:43Speaker 4: those games?
- 8:43Speaker 5: Oh, the Blackhawks.
- 8:45Speaker 4: The fights and the wings.
- 8:46Speaker 5: Yeah, loved that.
- 8:47Speaker 7: And what you said is, and I reference this to
- 8:50Speaker 7: my column today, that tells me as the game's imploding,
- 8:55Speaker 7: Mike Yelka sometimes thinks of what's going to be out there,
- 8:57Speaker 7: what's going to be said bad about you. And, you know,
- 9:01Speaker 7: and luckily, I think, Chip, you more than me, you're on.
- 9:07Speaker 7: What do you call it, talking head, people hate you.
- 9:10Speaker 7: And I always love when people, every once in a
- 9:12Speaker 7: while someone goes, you know, I don't like that Chip Howard.
- 9:14Speaker 7: I never listened to him.
- 9:15Speaker 5: You know what he said the other day?
- 9:16Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, yeah. And so we get that sometimes.
- 9:21Speaker 4: But at 49 years old, 50 years old, where he is. 52, 53.
- 9:24Speaker 4: So here's what you have to understand. There's a difference between,
- 9:28Speaker 4: we preach this in this Kairos training, there's a difference
- 9:32Speaker 4: between reaction and response. Reaction is the heat of the moment.
- 9:37Speaker 4: You don't ever want to do that. And I've learned
- 9:39Speaker 4: this in 30 some odd years of marriage. It's like,
- 9:41Speaker 4: you don't want to react when you're most, you want
- 9:44Speaker 4: to respond because when you respond to something, you've had
- 9:48Speaker 4: time to think about it. So what he did on
- 9:51Speaker 4: Saturday was a reaction, not a response. He had a
- 9:56Speaker 4: chance to make a response today and he failed, in
- 9:58Speaker 4: my opinion.
- 10:00Speaker 5: It's funny you should bring this up because I want to....
- 10:06Speaker 1: I heard Lucci today and I really like the way
- 10:10Speaker 1: he responded.
- 10:12Speaker 5: I really do.
- 10:13Speaker 1: He responded with calmness, A sensibility he could have fired
- 10:19Speaker 1: right back.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Sure.
- 10:20Speaker 5: Easily.
- 10:21Speaker 1: And I'm sure a lot of people did on the
- 10:23Speaker 1: message boards. I don't have a doubt about that. But
- 10:26Speaker 1: but the head of the guy, he said, well, Johnny
- 10:29Speaker 1: Manziel called me and told me not.
- 10:33Speaker 5: To do do it. He said, I'm taken.
- 10:38Speaker 4: So the voice of reason is Johnny Manziel. The voice
- 10:40Speaker 4: of reason is Johnny Manziel. Oh my gosh, that's awesome.
- 10:43Speaker 5: Is that awesome?
- 10:44Speaker 4: That is fantastic.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Well, who should know more about reacting rather than responding
- 10:49Speaker 1: than Johnny Manziel, right?
- 10:51Speaker 4: Right.
- 10:51Speaker 5: So I just, I thought it was funny. I thought
- 10:54Speaker 5: it was appropriate. And you're right, as a public figure,
- 11:02Speaker 5: You know, he didn't get this at Duke, Rusty. Here's
- 11:04Speaker 5: the thing.
- 11:05Speaker 7: Bottom line, you're right.
- 11:05Speaker 5: You know, he didn't get that at Duke. He could
- 11:09Speaker 5: have been 3-8, 3-9. He wouldn't have gotten that at Duke, okay?
- 11:14Speaker 5: He just wouldn't. And now if he's a basketball coach,
- 11:19Speaker 5: that's a whole other issue. Right. But he's a football
- 11:23Speaker 5: coach at A & M, and he has to know that.
- 11:25Speaker 5: He's been around long enough. And he's given a period
- 11:29Speaker 5: of grace, which he should be given when he steps in.
- 11:32Speaker 5: He did okay. He did great last year, right?
- 11:35Speaker 10: Yep.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Lots of expectations this year. Lots of expectations. I will say, Cease,
- 11:47Speaker 1: I had this team at, I think, 9-3.
- 11:49Speaker 5: That's what I had.
- 11:50Speaker 4: Yep, me too.
- 11:51Speaker 5: I think 9-3.
- 11:51Speaker 4: Me too.
- 11:52Speaker 7: Hey, no big deal. Win six games.
- 11:54Speaker 1: But the preseason– message boards every year it's it's 12
- 11:59Speaker 1: and 0 and then it's 16 and 0 right i
- 12:02Speaker 1: mean that's just that's the mindset of the fan because
- 12:06Speaker 1: fan is short for fanatic and that's the mindset and
- 12:11Speaker 1: so he's he's had this period of grace until now
- 12:17Speaker 1: and this isn't the season that anybody expected and.
- 12:21Speaker 5: It started early right It started early.
- 12:24Speaker 4: And I'm with you on that.
- 12:26Speaker 5: He didn't lose me on the season. I'm not defending him.
- 12:28Speaker 5: I'm just, I'm just, I'm explaining.
- 12:30Speaker 14: Right.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Right.
- 12:32Speaker 5: But, but you're right. I mean, this stuff started early
- 12:35Speaker 5: and now it's built to this. Oh my gosh. We're in,
- 12:39Speaker 5: we're in Defcon five now.
- 12:40Speaker 4: So he, he lost all my family, you know? And
- 12:42Speaker 4: so my family are very fiercely loyal.
- 12:44Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 12:45Speaker 4: Like my daughter who's in school right now, she had,
- 12:49Speaker 4: She had an issue with the postgame. Her issue was
- 12:52Speaker 4: when he said, we're building something. And she said, we're
- 12:55Speaker 4: building what? I mean, like, it's falling apart. And so,
- 13:00Speaker 4: but they didn't lose this at the game.
- 13:04Speaker 5: That's what I'm saying.
- 13:05Speaker 4: He lost the press conference.
- 13:07Speaker 5: What he said was.
- 13:08Speaker 4: Just like, that's going to stick with him. And it's
- 13:10Speaker 4: kind of like... You've seen coaches lose it like that.
- 13:13Speaker 4: I'm a man.
- 13:14Speaker 5: I'm 40.
- 13:16Speaker 4: That's still with him.
- 13:17Speaker 7: Yes, it is.
- 13:18Speaker 4: Or Les Miles, the bizarre stuff he did at LSU.
- 13:24Speaker 4: If he was still coaching, that was still with him.
- 13:27Speaker 4: These are things that are hard to forget, especially as
- 13:30Speaker 4: an Aggie fan. Because Aggies are very forgiving. Very forgiving.
- 13:35Speaker 7: But they remember, too.
- 13:36Speaker 5: They do remember.
- 13:38Speaker 7: It's just what you rattled off.
- 13:40Speaker 5: And the deal is.
- 13:41Speaker 7: He could go on unless he wins a national championship.
- 13:46Speaker 7: But whatever he does, the next 11-2 season, if he's
- 13:49Speaker 7: lucky enough to have one, someone's going to say the
- 13:51Speaker 7: first time he loses a game. You remember back in
- 13:53Speaker 7: 2026 when he did that? He's got to live with that,
- 13:57Speaker 7: and he's got to try to live with it better
- 14:01Speaker 7: because here we are. There's national talk shows. There's a
- 14:05Speaker 7: very small segment of fans. that fit what he talked about.
- 14:10Speaker 7: He called them the right, who they are, but don't
- 14:13Speaker 7: give them the platform.
- 14:14Speaker 4: He was, he was national news yesterday. Andy Staples was
- 14:17Speaker 4: at a podcast about him and we went on and on.
- 14:20Speaker 4: Andy Staples, one of the most respected journalists out there
- 14:22Speaker 4: covering college football.
- 14:23Speaker 5: You don't want to be. Paul Feinbaum.
- 14:25Speaker 4: I mean, they're out there making comments about what a
- 14:28Speaker 4: stupid comment that was. And that this is like, you
- 14:32Speaker 4: already have had a really rough season and, You just
- 14:35Speaker 4: made it way worse for yourself.
- 14:36Speaker 5: Way worse. Yeah.
- 14:37Speaker 7: Two more gasoline on the fire.
- 14:39Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 14:39Speaker 7: And it's like, it should have never been there. And
- 14:43Speaker 7: I talked to a fellow person in the business today
- 14:46Speaker 7: and said, like, you got to remember. He had that
- 14:49Speaker 7: five or ten minutes cooling off period. I mean, they
- 14:51Speaker 7: didn't put him in right away. And he made it
- 14:53Speaker 7: on the last comment.
- 14:54Speaker 12: Right.
- 14:54Speaker 7: So he handled everything. He took responsibility time after time again.
- 14:58Speaker 4: Yeah, he said all the right things.
- 15:00Speaker 7: Didn't throw anybody under the bus except himself.
- 15:03Speaker 15: Right.
- 15:03Speaker 7: But then let me throw all the Aggies under the bus.
- 15:07Speaker 10: Right.
- 15:07Speaker 4: Every one.
- 15:08Speaker 7: And, okay, I get it. He didn't see that coming.
- 15:11Speaker 5: Right.
- 15:13Speaker 7: Man, I'm kind of surprised he didn't see that coming.
- 15:15Speaker 4: At first, I had to go back and rewind because
- 15:17Speaker 4: I thought he said Robert Cesspool.
- 15:20Speaker 5: Well, I always have to laugh.
- 15:21Speaker 7: Because growing up, a lot of people, when my friends
- 15:25Speaker 7: got mad, they'd call me Cesspool or Ceasepool. Think about it.
- 15:28Speaker 7: Everybody calls me Cease. And I go, you don't want
- 15:30Speaker 7: to go there, Elko. You're in bad company when you
- 15:34Speaker 7: did that. And we can laugh because... Because it's not us.
- 15:38Speaker 7: It's not us. And when he does... But I'm telling.
- 15:42Speaker 4: You, I relate to that. But you've got to come
- 15:46Speaker 4: out with, I'm sorry about that. That was really not
- 15:48Speaker 4: a very smart thing for me to say. And he
- 15:50Speaker 4: didn't address that. And that was, to me, the huge
- 15:54Speaker 4: elephant in the room. That should have been the first
- 15:55Speaker 4: thing he came in on. Come in hot and say, listen,
- 15:58Speaker 4: thanks for being here, Billy Lucci. Let me just say
- 16:01Speaker 4: right up front, what I said at the press conference Saturday,
- 16:04Speaker 4: that was not smart of me to say. And I
- 16:08Speaker 4: want to apologize. And had he done that today, He
- 16:12Speaker 4: would have won a lot of people back. And instead,
- 16:15Speaker 4: they're still hanging around.
- 16:18Speaker 5: So let me just read what he said.
- 16:22Speaker 4: The regrets.
- 16:23Speaker 5: Okay, yeah.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Just to address the post-game conversation, again, I think in
- 16:30Speaker 1: the heat of the moment, I think I answered a
- 16:32Speaker 1: question in a way I certainly regret. I think everybody
- 16:36Speaker 1: knows I have a tremendous relationship with Billy. I appreciate Billy.
- 16:40Speaker 1: I appreciate him being here today. There's nothing about Billy
- 16:44Speaker 1: and I that have ever been off since 2018. I
- 16:48Speaker 1: think everybody knows I appreciate our fan base and everything
- 16:52Speaker 1: that they're about. Everything that they need at Texas A
- 16:56Speaker 1: & M. And outside of that, I leave it alone.
- 17:00Speaker 1: So I just regret. I regret the way it was taken.
- 17:04Speaker 1: I regret the way it came out. I regret the
- 17:08Speaker 1: way it ran. That was certainly never my intention, and
- 17:12Speaker 1: certainly throughout the course of that interview, at no point
- 17:16Speaker 1: ever did I lend any blame to any other than myself.
- 17:21Speaker 1: I am the reason why this team is struggling. I
- 17:24Speaker 1: have owned that since this has started. I continue to
- 17:28Speaker 1: own that. It's my job to figure out how to
- 17:31Speaker 1: get it better. That's a complete comment for those of
- 17:34Speaker 1: you that did.
- 17:37Speaker 7: Well when I walked in and you come out of
- 17:41Speaker 7: left field a little bit on me I didn't expect
- 17:43Speaker 7: you to say what you said but I will say
- 17:48Speaker 7: I usually sit up in the front your chipsets we
- 17:52Speaker 7: all have our kind of seats I'm in the back
- 17:55Speaker 7: and as I'm trying to input everything real quick I
- 17:59Speaker 7: did notice he never said I'm sorry You know, which
- 18:03Speaker 7: you brought up, which I didn't, personally, I didn't think
- 18:08Speaker 7: at the time that would matter much because I still
- 18:12Speaker 7: had a time to go back and look at it
- 18:13Speaker 7: because it's a hectic Monday. I got to do a
- 18:15Speaker 7: lot to do. I do my column after the show.
- 18:18Speaker 7: So I go, okay, I need to go back and
- 18:20Speaker 7: look at that. And I immediately thought it's like a
- 18:24Speaker 7: lot of people that have a rough time saying I
- 18:27Speaker 7: love you. You know, and it's at least my thoughts.
- 18:30Speaker 7: Some people having a rough time saying i'm sorry or
- 18:35Speaker 7: some people just really having a rough time with words
- 18:39Speaker 7: and that's my initial thought at the time.
- 18:41Speaker 4: So i think in fairness i grew up in a
- 18:44Speaker 4: household where my mother couldn't say she was sorry my
- 18:48Speaker 4: mother was never wrong okay ever good i mean she
- 18:52Speaker 4: might acknowledge that she's wrong but.
- 18:54Speaker 7: She'll never say it i've been around people like that and.
- 18:56Speaker 4: So I'm hypersensitive to that. Like if people say, go
- 19:03Speaker 4: back and read the first part, I think.
- 19:06Speaker 5: Is that what he said?
- 19:06Speaker 1: I think in the heat of the moment, I answered
- 19:09Speaker 1: a question the way I certainly regret.
- 19:10Speaker 4: I think?
- 19:11Speaker 5: No, you did.
- 19:12Speaker 4: In the heat of the moment, you answered it.
- 19:14Speaker 7: No, you guys can, once again, as I always say,
- 19:17Speaker 7: read between the tea leaves. I thought, okay, my initial
- 19:22Speaker 7: reaction was, he's having a rough time even saying he
- 19:24Speaker 7: regrets it. I mean, because he just has a rough
- 19:31Speaker 7: time with his emotions. And, you know, this is me speaking,
- 19:34Speaker 7: and God knows how many times I'm wrong. And my
- 19:37Speaker 7: wife just said amen, and my kids. I mean, that happens.
- 19:41Speaker 4: Me too. Me too.
- 19:42Speaker 7: But I'm just thinking to myself, man, he can't say
- 19:44Speaker 7: I'm sorry. I mean, it's just not in his nature.
- 19:47Speaker 7: And I go, we all have our issues. agendas or
- 19:51Speaker 7: hidden problems, so to speak.
- 19:53Speaker 4: Yeah, that's my buzzword probably.
- 19:55Speaker 7: I can relate with that or whatever. But I immediately thought, hmm,
- 20:00Speaker 7: he never said I'm sorry. And as he went on,
- 20:02Speaker 7: every time he said regret, I thought he had a
- 20:05Speaker 7: rough time because– It was just a quick reaction, and
- 20:11Speaker 7: he probably doesn't– at the time, I don't think he
- 20:13Speaker 7: realized how much that meant to everybody, that you can't
- 20:16Speaker 7: say that. He's not the president of the United States,
- 20:19Speaker 7: but he's the president of A & M football. And
- 20:21Speaker 7: there's millions of people out there. What's affected by that?
- 20:26Speaker 1: Well, we'll say this again. He doesn't hide his emotions.
- 20:33Speaker 7: No, he doesn't.
- 20:34Speaker 5: His emotions are on his sleeve constantly, right?
- 20:38Speaker 4: Yeah, what he said, what gives you confidence that you
- 20:41Speaker 4: can turn this around?
- 20:42Speaker 5: Yeah, well, you know what? It's interesting about that, though.
- 20:46Speaker 5: I will say this, Rusty. As confident as he has been.
- 20:52Speaker 1: I haven't seen that the last couple of weeks. I've
- 20:56Speaker 1: seen more of, man, like last week before this Missouri game.
- 21:02Speaker 1: You know, I don't have that answer. Sometimes it's too honest.
- 21:07Speaker 1: He is very honest to a fault. And it's like, man,
- 21:14Speaker 1: we're doing all we can do right now, right? All
- 21:16Speaker 1: that I know how to do.
- 21:18Speaker 5: Let me put it that way, right?
- 21:20Speaker 1: And that's an interesting place to be for a guy who.
- 21:25Speaker 5: Is confident in his ability.
- 21:27Speaker 1: But I think the team follows the coach, too. I
- 21:32Speaker 1: don't think that confidence is nearly what it's been. And
- 21:38Speaker 1: he doesn't have an answer. And if he did, we'd
- 21:42Speaker 1: probably see it on the field. And he knows stuff
- 21:48Speaker 1: that we already think is that this team is just
- 21:51Speaker 1: not very good as it's put together.
- 21:53Speaker 5: He put it together. And the pieces don't fit. And
- 21:58Speaker 5: he knows the pieces don't fit.
- 22:02Speaker 1: And he knows it's going to be a long season.
- 22:05Speaker 7: Getting back to one of your points about his emotion
- 22:09Speaker 7: and quickness, I'll go back to a few times when
- 22:12Speaker 7: he does try to be very cordial and interact with
- 22:15Speaker 7: the media better than some other coaches. There's a couple
- 22:19Speaker 7: times when someone asks a question and he'll get a
- 22:21Speaker 7: smile on his face and he'll go, let me try
- 22:25Speaker 7: to be nice. You chuckle because I'm saying to myself,
- 22:32Speaker 7: A Sumlin or a Fisher would just give a coach
- 22:35Speaker 7: speak answer and go dah, dah, dah. But he exactly
- 22:39Speaker 7: says how he feels like. In other words, boy, that's
- 22:42Speaker 7: a stupid question. But I'll try to be nice.
- 22:46Speaker 1: Well, he just told the guy, he said, I thought
- 22:49Speaker 1: I answered that question at the beginning.
- 22:51Speaker 12: Right.
- 22:51Speaker 4: And he did.
- 22:52Speaker 5: And he did.
- 22:53Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 22:53Speaker 5: But, and then he gave, you know, another answer.
- 22:57Speaker 7: But you're going to have that. I ask, I always say,
- 23:01Speaker 7: there's no such thing as a bad question. Because if
- 23:03Speaker 7: you get a response.
- 23:04Speaker 5: Only bad people who ask the question.
- 23:06Speaker 7: There you go. There you go. But, you know, to
- 23:09Speaker 7: me it goes back to, man... The guy is so competitive,
- 23:13Speaker 7: he almost needs what he calls a life skill coach
- 23:15Speaker 7: or something. I mean, seriously, he needs somebody after he goes,
- 23:18Speaker 7: here's what you did wrong, coach. I mean, today, you know,
- 23:21Speaker 7: because— Let me throw.
- 23:23Speaker 5: Something out here, Cease. You know that in the old days,
- 23:29Speaker 5: sports information directors who were in charge of coaches would
- 23:33Speaker 5: do that stuff.
- 23:34Speaker 7: Correct.
- 23:34Speaker 4: Yep, correct.
- 23:35Speaker 5: Right? They handled those guys. That's not the case anymore.
- 23:39Speaker 7: Johnny Keith was hired.
- 23:41Speaker 5: Yes.
- 23:42Speaker 7: To go ahead.
- 23:43Speaker 5: Yes.
- 23:43Speaker 7: And tell Jackie.
- 23:45Speaker 5: Yes.
- 23:45Speaker 7: You're a jackass, Jackie.
- 23:47Speaker 4: Yes.
- 23:47Speaker 7: And he did.
- 23:48Speaker 5: Yes.
- 23:48Speaker 7: And then, because Jackie was losing the media time after time.
- 23:52Speaker 5: Yes. So he brought, Keith was great.
- 23:55Speaker 7: Yeah. He wasn't a yes guy. At what he did.
- 23:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 23:57Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly.
- 23:58Speaker 7: Exactly.
- 23:59Speaker 5: They don't have that anymore.
- 24:00Speaker 7: And he needs someone.
- 24:01Speaker 5: There's nobody. And there was an interesting question.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Maybe you asked that question, Cease, about who do you
- 24:07Speaker 1: go to when things get bad.
- 24:08Speaker 5: It was a really good question. Okay. And he said,
- 24:11Speaker 5: I have a group of people.
- 24:12Speaker 7: And I thought he would.
- 24:13Speaker 5: And I believe it.
- 24:13Speaker 4: I do, too.
- 24:14Speaker 5: But he doesn't have media people.
- 24:17Speaker 1: No, a media person that is savvy with that going, hey, coach.
- 24:24Speaker 4: I remember.
- 24:26Speaker 7: Is Mike McKenzie around?
- 24:27Speaker 10: No.
- 24:27Speaker 4: Oh, my God. There are so many examples that come
- 24:30Speaker 4: to mind. But I remember early in his career, Kobe
- 24:33Speaker 4: Bryant said something or was accused of sexually abusing somebody.
- 24:38Speaker 4: And he came out right away and his wife was angry.
- 24:42Speaker 4: He apologized profusely. Yes. And his image was really restored.
- 24:48Speaker 4: I mean, so it came back. But Americans in general.
- 24:52Speaker 5: Are very forgiving if they do it.
- 24:55Speaker 7: Darryl Strawberry, for example.
- 24:56Speaker 4: Absolutely, yeah, that's a great example.
- 24:58Speaker 7: Time goes on and in because we're all human. I mean,
- 25:01Speaker 7: come on, I hope a lot of listeners went to
- 25:03Speaker 7: church on Sunday. I slept in. I was exhausted. I
- 25:07Speaker 7: wish I'd have been there, but God, I need help
- 25:09Speaker 7: every day. And you'd hope people do that way, but man,
- 25:13Speaker 7: he needs help.
- 25:14Speaker 16: I think.
- 25:15Speaker 4: I think, Chip, you point out a great point. I mean,
- 25:18Speaker 4: that he doesn't have a media person telling him, hey,
- 25:21Speaker 4: this is what you.
- 25:22Speaker 7: Need to do.
- 25:22Speaker 5: Or one that he respects enough to tell him what
- 25:25Speaker 5: to do.
- 25:25Speaker 4: Correct.
- 25:26Speaker 5: One who's too afraid to tell him.
- 25:28Speaker 7: It's hard to take tough love or tough criticism.
- 25:31Speaker 4: It is.
- 25:31Speaker 5: Oh, it's very hard for everybody.
- 25:33Speaker 7: Because know what he wants to do.
- 25:34Speaker 5: For everybody. But a head coach.
- 25:37Speaker 1: These guys are– this is a multimillion-dollar industry we're talking about, right?
- 25:41Speaker 1: And the head coaches know this, the majority of them now, right?
- 25:46Speaker 4: Right.
- 25:46Speaker 1: I mean, they understand. And consequently, we don't get much
- 25:53Speaker 1: visceral reaction anymore. You don't get a lot of coaches.
- 25:59Speaker 1: You get a few, and they always make headlines. But
- 26:02Speaker 1: they've been told better. They won't give you anything. They
- 26:06Speaker 1: won't tell you anything. They won't show you anything. Because
- 26:10Speaker 1: they don't want it on.
- 26:12Speaker 5: True.
- 26:15Speaker 7: Elko is refreshing a lot of times because he's so honest.
- 26:18Speaker 5: Absolutely.
- 26:18Speaker 7: But now it's got him in trouble a little bit.
- 26:20Speaker 7: Or not in trouble, but showed the bad side of it.
- 26:23Speaker 4: You know, another... Case in point, I guess, with Lane Kiffin,
- 26:27Speaker 4: after they lost to Ole Miss, came in there, and
- 26:31Speaker 4: it was hard to really hate him because of how,
- 26:35Speaker 4: I mean, broken down he was. You know, he was
- 26:37Speaker 4: talking about his dad and all the memories. And he
- 26:40Speaker 4: had– it's like, oh, man, that's very human.
- 26:43Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah.
- 26:43Speaker 4: And I don't know if a media person told him, like,
- 26:46Speaker 4: you know, don't come in there firing.
- 26:48Speaker 5: I mean, I know that they were chanting, blank you, Lane.
- 26:52Speaker 4: You know, but– you've got to handle this and defuse anything.
- 26:57Speaker 4: And so that was the great way to do it.
- 27:01Speaker 4: I don't know that Elko probably needs a guy to
- 27:03Speaker 4: come in here and say, this is what.
- 27:05Speaker 5: I advise you to do. He needs someone to do that.
- 27:07Speaker 7: Because what he needed to do was the Saban rat
- 27:10Speaker 7: poison deal. I mean, he just needed to say who
- 27:12Speaker 7: that small group was. Don't put a name to somebody
- 27:15Speaker 7: and do the whole group because not everybody takes rat poison.
- 27:19Speaker 1: Right.
- 27:19Speaker 7: You know what I mean? And it's, And it's easy
- 27:21Speaker 7: for us to sit here and second-guess after the second.
- 27:24Speaker 7: Because it's not going to go away. So, you know,
- 27:27Speaker 7: I mean, what's going to make it worse, let's be honest,
- 27:31Speaker 7: a two- or three-game winning streak would put it in
- 27:34Speaker 7: the rear view mirror. But it's not going to happen.
- 27:36Speaker 7: This team's not going to do that.
- 27:37Speaker 4: No, I mean, a two-game winning streak would really put
- 27:40Speaker 4: it in the rear view mirror.
- 27:40Speaker 5: Because they'd beat Alabama.
- 27:41Speaker 4: Yeah, because they'd beat Alabama.
- 27:43Speaker 7: I mean, anywhere in the rest of the season, it's
- 27:44Speaker 7: not going to happen.
- 27:45Speaker 4: It's going to be hard. This weekend could be the
- 27:47Speaker 4: last win. I mean, I'm not saying it will. But
- 27:50Speaker 4: when you start looking at it on paper, like maybe Tennessee.
- 27:53Speaker 4: Tennessee's not very good. They barely beat Arkansas.
- 27:57Speaker 7: A rivalry game, which you said last week when I
- 28:00Speaker 7: said Texas was so much better than Oklahoma.
- 28:03Speaker 5: What'd I say? And I'm kicking myself for picking Texas.
- 28:06Speaker 1: I told Kurt Bowles last week, I said, you know,
- 28:10Speaker 1: if I had any guts, I saw it coming because
- 28:13Speaker 1: it's a rivalry game.
- 28:15Speaker 5: I've seen it all my life.
- 28:16Speaker 1: I know how these things work. You go in, this
- 28:19Speaker 1: team's so much better. This team's terrible. The coach is
- 28:22Speaker 1: on the hot seat. Everything you could possibly have. That
- 28:27Speaker 1: could happen in November. And you know what? I want
- 28:31Speaker 1: you guys to think about this during the break because
- 28:33Speaker 1: I said we need to pause.
- 28:35Speaker 5: We need to think before we talk. So I want
- 28:37Speaker 5: you to think about this.
- 28:40Speaker 1: Is that game the only game left this season on
- 28:46Speaker 1: this team's calendar?
- 28:47Speaker 7: But I'm also going to say it. When Franchoni won
- 28:50Speaker 7: his last game in Texas, that was just a rivalry.
- 28:51Speaker 7: They played one of their best games.
- 28:53Speaker 4: No doubt.
- 28:53Speaker 7: Because it was a rivalry.
- 28:54Speaker 4: No doubt.
- 28:55Speaker 7: He was at the lowest part of his career. He
- 28:57Speaker 7: won the game.
- 28:57Speaker 5: He'd actually already been told he was fired.
- 28:59Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 29:00Speaker 5: All right. On that happy note, let's take a break.
- 29:03Speaker 5: We'll come back.

- 33:18Speaker 4: Welcome back.
- 33:22Speaker 1: It's the theme song for Coach Elko this week. Robert Sessa,
- 33:28Speaker 1: Rusty Burson, the writer's roundtable for a Monday brought to
- 33:31Speaker 1: you by Intec and First Financial Bank. So we hadn't
- 33:38Speaker 1: talked anything about the team, and maybe that was the
- 33:41Speaker 1: whole point to begin with. I kind of thought about that,
- 33:43Speaker 1: but anyway, uh, I don't think there's any point in
- 33:46Speaker 1: talking about the Citadel. But I want to go back
- 33:51Speaker 1: to this idea, cease of confidence, because you heard Marcel coming.
- 33:57Speaker 1: And again, to his credit, he's coming in every week
- 34:02Speaker 1: and facing all.
- 34:04Speaker 5: He may not give you the answers you want.
- 34:05Speaker 7: He says the right things.
- 34:07Speaker 1: But he's coming. He's showing up, right? So from Elko's,
- 34:12Speaker 1: it's like he says... And I wrote down some quotes
- 34:17Speaker 1: from the first part that I played. Everything is on
- 34:19Speaker 1: the table. We're exploring every option, personnel, tempo, style. He said,
- 34:31Speaker 1: let's see. Well, right about that. One of the issues
- 34:38Speaker 1: is when the offense is dying, there's more than one thing. Yes,
- 34:43Speaker 1: the quarterback play isn't good. And we've said that, I think, repeatedly.
- 34:46Speaker 1: The quarterback play isn't good. Would the whole offense be better?
- 34:52Speaker 1: Possibly with a quarterback. I just watched a game in
- 34:57Speaker 1: Dallas where both quarterbacks were terrible. But the winning quarterback
- 35:05Speaker 1: made two plays at the end of the game.
- 35:06Speaker 5: So I had to play.
- 35:08Speaker 1: They made two throws at the end of the game.
- 35:10Speaker 5: But they didn't make a mistake. They didn't make a mistake, right?
- 35:14Speaker 5: So here... When things are going bad, you have a turnover.
- 35:18Speaker 5: That's going to kill you.
- 35:19Speaker 1: You have a guy when it's second and four. If
- 35:22Speaker 1: you've made six yards running and jumps off sides, then
- 35:27Speaker 1: it's second and nine.
- 35:28Speaker 5: That's going to.
- 35:29Speaker 1: Change what you want to do. Then you have several drops.
- 35:33Speaker 1: When he does make a good throw, you have some drops.
- 35:36Speaker 1: We hadn't seen quite as many this year as we've had.
- 35:40Speaker 7: No, we haven't.
- 35:41Speaker 5: But we have seen them, right? Yeah. When you're struggling,
- 35:47Speaker 5: you better have everything going perfectly right now, which would,
- 35:52Speaker 5: in my mind, be what it would take.
- 35:54Speaker 4: And you left out Reuben Owens. That was one of
- 35:57Speaker 4: the plays that stuck out in my mind the most.
- 35:59Speaker 4: He's in there for one reason, to pick up a blitz.
- 36:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 36:02Speaker 4: And the guy runs right past him.
- 36:04Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 36:04Speaker 4: I mean, right past. It doesn't lay a finger on him.
- 36:07Speaker 4: And Marcel gets sacked.
- 36:08Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 36:09Speaker 4: That's not Marcel's fault.
- 36:10Speaker 12: Right.
- 36:11Speaker 4: I mean, nobody touched that guy. I mean, like.
- 36:14Speaker 5: The line play has not been good. Right?
- 36:16Speaker 7: Right.
- 36:16Speaker 5: They can't run the football.
- 36:18Speaker 4: Right.
- 36:22Speaker 7: I'm a big Steelers fan. So yesterday... I.
- 36:25Speaker 4: Can attest to that. He was watching the Steelers on
- 36:27Speaker 4: his phone while eating with his family.
- 36:29Speaker 7: I'm getting around this. Aaron Rodgers, in his first 10 passes,
- 36:34Speaker 7: the average time he threw was 1.78 seconds.
- 36:37Speaker 5: Okay.
- 36:38Speaker 7: Because their line is that bad.
- 36:39Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 36:40Speaker 7: Their line is that bad.
- 36:41Speaker 8: Okay.
- 36:41Speaker 7: And I was listening to you driving over, Chip, and
- 36:43Speaker 7: I thought to myself is, what I think the biggest
- 36:46Speaker 7: difference from this year's team to last year's hit on
- 36:49Speaker 7: me we don't realize what one second will do. Their
- 36:54Speaker 7: line was so good last year, he got that maybe
- 36:57Speaker 7: one extra second all the time. And in football, that
- 37:01Speaker 7: one extra second, maybe that guy can go five more
- 37:04Speaker 7: yards and he's open. Maybe he can do that. But now,
- 37:07Speaker 7: what do we hear? Receivers can't get separation because they
- 37:10Speaker 7: don't have time. That offensive line was so good, and
- 37:13Speaker 7: they ran. The hole was there. And I think this
- 37:17Speaker 7: gets always back to me. The SEC is such a
- 37:19Speaker 7: line of scrimmage.
- 37:20Speaker 5: It is.
- 37:22Speaker 4: I mean, you can go back in history of A
- 37:24Speaker 4: & M, all right? Johnny Manziel, when he won the Heisman,
- 37:26Speaker 4: that was a great offensive line. Kellen Maughan, 2020, when
- 37:30Speaker 4: A & M went to the Orange Bowl, great offensive line.
- 37:33Speaker 4: So Kellen Maughan was the last quarterback here that I
- 37:36Speaker 4: can recall who actually got better as his career progressed.
- 37:41Speaker 5: A lot of it was.
- 37:41Speaker 4: Because that offensive line was so good that year. And
- 37:44Speaker 4: you're right. I mean... Marcel has thrown a lot of
- 37:47Speaker 4: bad passes this year. I'm not going to take any
- 37:49Speaker 4: blame off of that. But he is running like he
- 37:53Speaker 4: knows it's coming. He's got to make a quick decision.
- 37:57Speaker 4: And when he gets rid of it very, very quickly,
- 38:00Speaker 4: it's usually a good play. When he holds on to it,
- 38:03Speaker 4: that's when things get real dangerous.
- 38:05Speaker 7: And getting back to what you also said coming ahead
- 38:08Speaker 7: on me, how many times do I cover a game
- 38:11Speaker 7: and the winning team had like 14 penalties for 130 yards?
- 38:15Speaker 7: But they also had eight or nine explosive plays.
- 38:17Speaker 5: No explosive plays.
- 38:18Speaker 7: They were so good. This team cannot make explosive plays.
- 38:22Speaker 7: So every time they have a holding call, drives over.
- 38:24Speaker 7: I mean, Chip, they can't do it.
- 38:26Speaker 4: Chip, I'm watching the first half, and I'm like, man,
- 38:29Speaker 4: it's like watching the Rangers and Astros compete for the
- 38:31Speaker 4: title because how can you be so bad and still
- 38:35Speaker 4: be in it?
- 38:35Speaker 5: Yes.
- 38:36Speaker 4: Because that's what A & M was like. It's like, jeez,
- 38:39Speaker 4: they're in this game. They're going to touch that.
- 38:41Speaker 7: They were.
- 38:42Speaker 4: I'm in there.
- 38:42Speaker 5: Well, the defense played really well.
- 38:44Speaker 14: Oh, terrific.
- 38:45Speaker 4: First turnover. Then they got worn down.
- 38:47Speaker 7: Yeah, first turnover, I go, A & M' s going to
- 38:49Speaker 7: be up 7-0. Twice, I thought they should have been
- 38:51Speaker 7: up 7-0.
- 38:52Speaker 5: Oh, that first quarter, they should have.
- 38:53Speaker 7: And then what happens if you're up 7-0? Because this
- 38:55Speaker 7: team does not have any confidence.
- 38:57Speaker 5: They do not.
- 38:57Speaker 7: They don't do anything to get confidence. They had a
- 38:59Speaker 7: chance to get that confidence.
- 39:00Speaker 4: Yeah, it's night and day. I'm watching Indiana. you know,
- 39:03Speaker 4: and how they're down double digits, and they're just confident
- 39:06Speaker 4: they're going to come back.
- 39:07Speaker 5: Yes.
- 39:07Speaker 4: They've done it before.
- 39:08Speaker 5: Yes.
- 39:09Speaker 4: You've done it before. You don't see any of that
- 39:11Speaker 4: at A & M.
- 39:12Speaker 5: Yeah. And it's a reflection of coaching.
- 39:14Speaker 1: So let me throw, well, let me throw something else
- 39:17Speaker 1: out at you as well, because you've got so many
- 39:21Speaker 1: new players from year to year, right? You don't have
- 39:24Speaker 1: a chance. There's holdovers from last year's 11-win team. I'm
- 39:30Speaker 1: not saying there's not, but the majority aren't, right? I mean,
- 39:34Speaker 1: you're not building that. You talk about offensive line play.
- 39:38Speaker 7: Trey Zun, a leader.
- 39:39Speaker 5: You talk about offensive line play.
- 39:41Speaker 1: Those are the guys that need the most. Well, now
- 39:43Speaker 1: they're going out and trying to get.
- 39:45Speaker 5: Seniors from some other team who has... supposedly developed over
- 39:51Speaker 5: all this time. Well, that's good.
- 39:53Speaker 1: But he had been playing with the other five, four guys,
- 39:57Speaker 1: you know, that he's going to be in the line
- 39:58Speaker 1: of scrimmage whiffs. It is a whole nother ball game.
- 40:02Speaker 5: Again, no excuses.
- 40:04Speaker 1: Other teams are doing it too. Other teams are doing
- 40:07Speaker 1: it and winning. I'm not excusing anything. I'm explaining the
- 40:11Speaker 1: possibility of why you're seeing some things the way they are.
- 40:15Speaker 5: Those aren't going to change.
- 40:16Speaker 4: And it might best be he did a really good
- 40:19Speaker 4: job evaluating talent last year and not nearly as good
- 40:22Speaker 4: this year.
- 40:23Speaker 5: I don't think he has the team he thought he had.
- 40:26Speaker 5: I really don't. I do not think he has the
- 40:28Speaker 5: team he thought he built.
- 40:30Speaker 7: Once again, back to getting back to honesty, he said
- 40:32Speaker 7: it about the passing. And when you talked about it,
- 40:34Speaker 7: he's too honest because he does. I don't think Horton
- 40:37Speaker 7: is who they thought they would be. No, I think,
- 40:39Speaker 7: you know, I don't think some of the defensive line lineman,
- 40:42Speaker 7: they got in or the offensive line or the offensive lineman.
- 40:46Speaker 7: It's not who they were. And thus you've got holes.
- 40:49Speaker 7: And once again, it's such a drop off from the
- 40:51Speaker 7: guy you're paying 200, $ 300, 000 to the guy that's getting nothing.
- 40:56Speaker 7: I mean, there's a reason he's getting nothing, you know,
- 40:58Speaker 7: and it's, It's getting back to our confidence. And when
- 41:02Speaker 7: things go wrong, they go wrong. And let's not forget expectations.
- 41:07Speaker 7: Aggies thought they were done with the 8-5 seasons. Now
- 41:11Speaker 7: they'd be lucky to have an 8-5 season.
- 41:13Speaker 4: Yeah, they are done with 8-5.
- 41:15Speaker 5: It looks like it.
- 41:18Speaker 7: We can laugh, but it's not a laughing matter.
- 41:19Speaker 5: Yeah, it does look like it. And as we talk, unfortunately...
- 41:23Speaker 5: Our message boards are lighting up.
- 41:25Speaker 7: If you don't want to hear the bad, don't go
- 41:27Speaker 7: to the message board.
- 41:28Speaker 4: Two and seven, one and eight is a real possibility
- 41:31Speaker 4: in the league. I mean, it's just that's the reality.
- 41:34Speaker 7: That's the SEC.
- 41:34Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 41:35Speaker 5: Unless something changes. Yeah, exactly. You know.
- 41:38Speaker 4: Dramatically.
- 41:39Speaker 1: If you could see something on the horizon that could
- 41:42Speaker 1: possibly change.
- 41:43Speaker 4: I mean, every week there's a shocker. Who thought South
- 41:46Speaker 4: Carolina was going to go into Florida?
- 41:47Speaker 5: Oh, my gosh.
- 41:48Speaker 4: And beat them.
- 41:48Speaker 7: Florida, two bad losses in a row. They were overrated.
- 41:51Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 41:52Speaker 7: They won a game and everybody thought.
- 41:53Speaker 4: Probably.
- 41:53Speaker 7: And that happens.
- 41:54Speaker 5: Probably.
- 41:55Speaker 7: But when you guys hit on something, if one thing
- 41:57Speaker 7: could work, I thought K.J. Edwards getting him more snaps
- 42:00Speaker 7: was good, but he couldn't run because there was no holes.
- 42:03Speaker 7: They couldn't get holes against that Missouri line, not like
- 42:05Speaker 7: they could the other teams. And sometimes it is about matchups.
- 42:09Speaker 7: And if they could just get something to work.
- 42:12Speaker 4: Yeah, but like you said, that quarterback hasn't thrown an
- 42:15Speaker 4: interception all year long. And right off the bat, A
- 42:17Speaker 4: & M picks one.
- 42:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 42:19Speaker 4: Zero interceptions.
- 42:20Speaker 5: First one of the year.
- 42:21Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 42:21Speaker 5: And you're like, okay.
- 42:22Speaker 4: That's us.
- 42:22Speaker 8: Yep.
- 42:23Speaker 5: You got a chance.
- 42:24Speaker 7: That's what you're thinking.
- 42:25Speaker 4: You got a chance. You go down there, score, put
- 42:26Speaker 4: it at 7-0.
- 42:27Speaker 5: Then you throw an interception.
- 42:28Speaker 4: Then you throw an interception.
- 42:29Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 42:30Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 42:30Speaker 5: And that was a bad throw. Yeah. That was not
- 42:33Speaker 5: a good throw.
- 42:33Speaker 7: And then they have. second and four, and they get
- 42:36Speaker 7: a motion penalty.
- 42:37Speaker 4: Well, and then they come right back with that short punt,
- 42:39Speaker 4: 22-yard punt.
- 42:40Speaker 14: Yep.
- 42:40Speaker 4: So A & M' s.
- 42:41Speaker 7: Got it right back in there.
- 42:41Speaker 5: Yep.
- 42:42Speaker 4: And, you know, they got the field goal.
- 42:43Speaker 14: Yep.
- 42:44Speaker 4: I mean, that's a weapon. Oh, he's a weapon. You know,
- 42:49Speaker 4: I wasn't opposed to Elko kicking the field goal late, too.
- 42:54Speaker 5: Right.
- 42:54Speaker 4: You still needed three scores.
- 42:55Speaker 7: Yes.
- 42:56Speaker 4: So you haven't had success on offense. Go ahead and
- 43:01Speaker 4: get the points.
- 43:01Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 43:02Speaker 7: And hope something happens.
- 43:03Speaker 5: I'm with you. Yeah. Because that made it 20-6.
- 43:06Speaker 12: Right.
- 43:06Speaker 7: I don't think he regretted that.
- 43:10Speaker 5: He did not regret that.
- 43:12Speaker 7: It is what it is.
- 43:13Speaker 5: We'll take a break. We'll come back.

- 43:51Speaker 17: The Dallas Cowboys are left with more questions than answers
- 43:55Speaker 17: after a 24-16 loss to the winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- 43:58Speaker 17: last night. The cards seem to be in the Cowboys'
- 44:01Speaker 17: favor heading into the contest, with all-pro guard Tyler Smith
- 44:05Speaker 17: returning as well as facing a depleted secondary.
- 44:08Speaker 5: However.
- 44:09Speaker 17: Dallas turned out another underwhelming performance against a meddling opponent.
- 44:13Speaker 17: Head coach Brian Schottenheimer spoke after the game on what
- 44:16Speaker 17: needs to be done to be more consistent.
- 44:18Speaker 15: This weekend is going to be a process. We're going
- 44:21Speaker 15: to go through the process. We're going to figure it out.
- 44:22Speaker 15: We're going to put on the tape. We're going to
- 44:23Speaker 15: watch the tape. We're going to look at stats. We're
- 44:25Speaker 15: going to look at everything. We're going to make some
- 44:29Speaker 15: decisions that we believe will give us the best chance
- 44:31Speaker 15: to pick back up and play well next week. We're
- 44:34Speaker 15: just getting started. There's a lot of football left, but
- 44:36Speaker 15: we've got to play better. We know that.
- 44:38Speaker 17: The Cowboys will have 10 days to lick their wounds
- 44:40Speaker 17: before they face off against the Green Bay Packers next Sunday.
- 44:44Speaker 17: Kickoff is set for 7-20. Coverage on NBC. With your

- 46:43Speaker 1: What else caught you boys' attention this weekend? There were
- 46:46Speaker 1: a couple of really good football games on.
- 46:49Speaker 7: You asked us that Texas question. When did you want
- 46:51Speaker 7: that answer?
- 46:51Speaker 5: Oh, which question was it?
- 46:54Speaker 7: You said a Texas game, the only one that's left
- 46:57Speaker 7: that we went to break.
- 46:58Speaker 5: Oh, yeah, is it?
- 46:59Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 46:59Speaker 7: Am I right?
- 47:00Speaker 5: Is that the last game left?
- 47:01Speaker 4: Yeah, that's it.
- 47:02Speaker 7: Yeah, you asked the question.
- 47:03Speaker 4: That's the only one that I care about.
- 47:05Speaker 10: Right.
- 47:05Speaker 7: I think it is. Let's say, for example, you beat
- 47:10Speaker 7: South Carolina and Tennessee. Texas is the one that matters.
- 47:14Speaker 7: If he could beat Texas, he'd get a lot of
- 47:16Speaker 7: people back.
- 47:17Speaker 4: Yeah, that'd be big. Gives him momentum going into the offseason.
- 47:21Speaker 7: And like you said, it's a rivalry game. And he
- 47:24Speaker 7: hasn't done it.
- 47:25Speaker 4: How bad is Jeff Banks coaching at Texas?
- 47:27Speaker 5: Holy moly.
- 47:28Speaker 7: And heard his name mentioned. I go, wow.
- 47:30Speaker 4: Special teams.
- 47:31Speaker 1: You know, he was the guru for a while, right?
- 47:33Speaker 1: I mean, he was the guru. And they have been terrible.
- 47:37Speaker 5: Yeah. Terrible. In fact. Sark was asked about that right
- 47:41Speaker 5: after the game.
- 47:42Speaker 7: Yes.
- 47:43Speaker 5: He was asked about that. Wow. Yeah.
- 47:45Speaker 1: He's asked two questions. Among the two questions, would you
- 47:49Speaker 1: consider an offensive coordinator?
- 47:51Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 47:52Speaker 5: He said, no way, which is stupid. Yeah. And number two,
- 47:55Speaker 5: would you consider changing special teams coach?
- 48:00Speaker 4: Well, I think Jeff Banks is on the hot seat.
- 48:03Speaker 5: Oh, he's got to be.
- 48:04Speaker 1: Because this is at least the second year in a row.
- 48:08Speaker 1: The only reason he wasn't last year is because Ryan
- 48:12Speaker 1: Niblett kept returning punts, right?
- 48:16Speaker 5: It wasn't because any other phase of the special teams
- 48:20Speaker 5: was any good.
- 48:22Speaker 1: But Ryan Niblett returned punts, and so that covers up
- 48:25Speaker 1: some of the other special teams' problems.
- 48:28Speaker 7: Maybe his wife will get a new monkey.
- 48:30Speaker 1: How about that Kentucky LSU game?
- 48:36Speaker 4: Yeah, that was entertaining.
- 48:37Speaker 5: That was very entertaining.
- 48:39Speaker 7: Yes, it was. We listened to a little bit driving back, though.
- 48:42Speaker 5: Oh, my gosh. That was entertaining. But I'll tell you,
- 48:45Speaker 5: the two best teams, I think two of the best three.
- 48:48Speaker 5: I'm going to still throw my Miami team in there
- 48:51Speaker 5: until they prove me wrong. But Alabama and Georgia, oh,
- 48:55Speaker 5: my gosh, that was a game.
- 48:57Speaker 7: I did watch a lot of that game.
- 48:58Speaker 5: Oh, that was a game.
- 48:59Speaker 7: Talk about a lot of scrimmage games.
- 49:00Speaker 5: Have you ever seen Kalen DeBoer melt down before? Because
- 49:03Speaker 5: I haven't. He was always this calm, you know, guy, low-key. Oh,
- 49:10Speaker 5: my gosh. He melted down. And I think that non-interference
- 49:16Speaker 5: call started him, but that stupid play by his kid
- 49:18Speaker 5: on the field punching.
- 49:20Speaker 1: The guy, that put him over the top.
- 49:23Speaker 10: Well.
- 49:25Speaker 5: Why do these kids do stuff like that?
- 49:26Speaker 7: What are we talking about?
- 49:27Speaker 5: They're just kids.
- 49:28Speaker 7: We started out.
- 49:28Speaker 5: Emotions.
- 49:29Speaker 7: You got to hand your, if you're a competitor.
- 49:32Speaker 5: You have to. And you know what?
- 49:34Speaker 1: I don't think there's anybody that runs hotter than Kirby Smart,
- 49:38Speaker 1: but his team. most of the time plays from snap
- 49:43Speaker 1: to whistle, right, within themselves. Now, they play ferociously hard
- 49:48Speaker 1: on both sides of the ball, but you don't see
- 49:51Speaker 1: a lot of that other stuff.
- 49:54Speaker 5: Now, they don't know how to drive. They need to
- 49:56Speaker 5: get Ubers down there. Yes, they do. But on the field,
- 50:00Speaker 5: you don't see a lot of that stuff from his team.
- 50:04Speaker 4: You know, looking ahead, I can't wait. I'm going to
- 50:08Speaker 4: have to tape that A & M game or record
- 50:10Speaker 4: it because I'm not going to watch it live.
- 50:12Speaker 5: Which one?
- 50:13Speaker 4: A & M and Citadel.
- 50:14Speaker 7: Oh, okay.
- 50:15Speaker 4: Indiana and Ohio State, really. Intriguing.
- 50:19Speaker 5: Very intriguing.
- 50:20Speaker 4: In Bloomington.
- 50:20Speaker 5: Very intriguing game.
- 50:22Speaker 4: It's going to be rocking.
- 50:23Speaker 5: It is going to be rocking. Unfortunately, it's 11 a.m.
- 50:26Speaker 1: This big noon kickoff is killing every TV, you know,
- 50:30Speaker 1: decent game.
- 50:32Speaker 5: But it will be rocking. And I think, you know,
- 50:35Speaker 5: like you said, how many did they have won in
- 50:37Speaker 5: a row?
- 50:38Speaker 4: No. 15, 16.
- 50:40Speaker 5: They're five low.
- 50:42Speaker 4: They went, what, 15?
- 50:43Speaker 5: They went about 20-something, 22 in a row, right?
- 50:46Speaker 7: 15 or 16.
- 50:46Speaker 5: They've got a nice little winning streak going.
- 50:48Speaker 6: Yes, they do.
- 50:49Speaker 5: A nice little winning streak.
- 50:51Speaker 7: Coming off a big win, comeback win.
- 50:53Speaker 5: And like you said, they believe it, right?
- 50:55Speaker 4: They're not as good as they were last year, I think.
- 50:57Speaker 5: They're not.
- 50:58Speaker 4: Because their quarterback's not as good. Yeah, but they believe
- 51:00Speaker 4: in themselves.
- 51:00Speaker 5: They do.
- 51:01Speaker 16: Yep.
- 51:01Speaker 5: And they still have a pretty good coach.
- 51:03Speaker 7: Confidence.
- 51:05Speaker 5: Confidence. I love his commercials, by the way. Yeah, his
- 51:09Speaker 5: commercials are great. They're fantastic. And they get Ohio State
- 51:11Speaker 5: at home.
- 51:12Speaker 4: Yep.
- 51:13Speaker 5: And I know.
- 51:15Speaker 1: I don't think Ohio State defensively is as good as
- 51:19Speaker 1: they were last year.
- 51:20Speaker 4: Ohio State's a three-and-a-half point favorite, Matt.
- 51:22Speaker 5: Okay, it's a little surprising.
- 51:24Speaker 1: Three-and-a-half seems a lot, which means on the road, what, five.
- 51:29Speaker 5: Or six seats probably?
- 51:30Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah.
- 51:31Speaker 5: Because they'll give them a little bit at home. You
- 51:35Speaker 5: know what?
- 51:37Speaker 1: I would probably just pick Ohio State, but that's a
- 51:42Speaker 1: hard game.
- 51:42Speaker 5: I think it's going to be a good one.
- 51:44Speaker 4: I think it's going to be a good one, too.
- 51:46Speaker 4: I probably would.
- 51:48Speaker 5: I would think that this Indiana coach is smart enough
- 51:51Speaker 5: to know where Jeremiah Smith is on the field.
- 51:54Speaker 4: I bet you he does.
- 51:55Speaker 1: Most of the coaches he's played, they haven't been smart enough.
- 51:59Speaker 1: But I bet Cignetti's smart enough.
- 52:01Speaker 4: I bet he figures it out.
- 52:04Speaker 7: Cignetti's know that works.
- 52:08Speaker 5: So you've got, let's see.
- 52:12Speaker 1: Missouri Ole Miss is intriguing to me because you mentioned
- 52:15Speaker 1: they've won two big games in a row, right?
- 52:16Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 52:18Speaker 4: It's hard to win three in a row.
- 52:19Speaker 7: Boy, it really is.
- 52:20Speaker 5: It really is. And now they're going on the road. Yep.
- 52:22Speaker 5: And they've been rung out. I mean, so they're going
- 52:26Speaker 5: on the road now.
- 52:27Speaker 7: Yeah. The only thing that helps them actually is their defense,
- 52:32Speaker 7: I think, is really good.
- 52:33Speaker 5: They are.
- 52:34Speaker 7: Their defense does travel.
- 52:35Speaker 10: They are.
- 52:36Speaker 5: That defensive end's good. He's like third in the league
- 52:39Speaker 5: in sacks.
- 52:40Speaker 7: And their linebacker, Rodriguez, he's everywhere.
- 52:42Speaker 4: I want to see Kentucky and Oklahoma because Oklahoma has
- 52:46Speaker 4: a little momentum now, but Kentucky's really starting to gain confidence.
- 52:50Speaker 5: And so that game's enormous. Oklahoma's offense is just so terrible. Yeah.
- 52:57Speaker 4: They had one rushing yard in the first half.
- 53:00Speaker 5: Yeah, no, I know. They only had about 70 in
- 53:02Speaker 5: the whole game. They're just not very good. And their
- 53:07Speaker 5: quarterback is terrible.
- 53:09Speaker 7: But they went with, like, less than 300 yards.
- 53:11Speaker 5: 238 yards to be exact.
- 53:14Speaker 7: Almost less than 200.
- 53:15Speaker 5: A lot less than 300 yards.
- 53:17Speaker 7: You can't win a lot of games.
- 53:19Speaker 5: Unless you get 17 points.
- 53:21Speaker 4: I got a text from a former A & M player.
- 53:23Speaker 4: I won't mention who, but he texted me at halftime.
- 53:25Speaker 4: He said, I'm spending, like, $ 45 million on this roster. So, basically,
- 53:30Speaker 4: we're spending $ 22. 5 million per first down.
- 53:34Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 53:35Speaker 9: Yep.
- 53:36Speaker 7: Good analysis.
- 53:36Speaker 5: There were two first downs in the first half.
- 53:38Speaker 7: Wherever he is, he's in finance now.
- 53:41Speaker 4: Yes.
- 53:42Speaker 1: Okay, so that's the other issue, isn't it, guys? We've
- 53:46Speaker 1: talked about this forever. Now these guys are making six
- 53:49Speaker 1: and seven figures. It's like, hey, before it was, well,
- 53:55Speaker 1: we knew they were getting a little money. But before
- 53:57Speaker 1: it was just, oh, these college kids, you can't treat
- 54:00Speaker 1: them like you do pros.
- 54:01Speaker 5: You know, you can't.
- 54:02Speaker 1: Be critical for it and now it's like no no
- 54:05Speaker 1: no this kid's making four million dollars he needs to play.
- 54:08Speaker 4: Yeah i mean let's be honest marcel making three million dollars.
- 54:12Speaker 7: Yeah i know and he they're not getting their money's
- 54:15Speaker 7: worth no they're not and you know elko said in
- 54:17Speaker 7: fact they're not.
- 54:18Speaker 1: Getting their money's worth from the 45 million dollar roster
- 54:20Speaker 1: or whatever exactly.
- 54:21Speaker 7: Right because i was going to say is elko said
- 54:23Speaker 7: they haven't pointed figures because what's going to happen is
- 54:27Speaker 7: if you start pointing fingers, Reed's making three million. He goes, hey,
- 54:31Speaker 7: these linemen are making quarter of a million and they
- 54:33Speaker 7: can't block. You know, it's like, so that's going to.
- 54:37Speaker 5: The only.
- 54:37Speaker 7: NIL's tough.
- 54:38Speaker 5: There's a few defensive players that are probably making their pay.
- 54:46Speaker 5: The kicker is the main guy on the team that's
- 54:50Speaker 5: really earning his keep.
- 54:51Speaker 4: You're right, both of them.
- 54:53Speaker 5: Both the punter and the kicker.
- 54:55Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 54:55Speaker 5: Yeah. If everybody was as good as they were, we
- 54:57Speaker 5: wouldn't be having this issue right now. He nailed it
- 54:59Speaker 5: on the kicker.
- 55:00Speaker 7: He did. He went 72 yards in the end zone.
- 55:03Speaker 5: I mean, if he wasn't in the end zone, he'd
- 55:05Speaker 5: have been like 90. The last year and a half,
- 55:07Speaker 5: he's been kind of in and out and inconsistent. But
- 55:09Speaker 5: this year, he's All-American.
- 55:11Speaker 4: He looks Shane Leckler-like.
- 55:12Speaker 5: All-American. Gentlemen, stay out of the cesspool, and we'll try
- 55:17Speaker 5: next week.
- 55:18Speaker 4: Okay.
- 55:18Speaker 5: We'll be back next week.
- 55:19Speaker 7: They do have a game this week, don't they?
- 55:21Speaker 1: See?
- 55:21Speaker 5: Yeah, but we're not talking about that. See you next week.
