- 0:24Speaker 1: a hater. It is that time of week where we
- 0:26Speaker 1: have a guest join us. Check him out on FS1,
- 0:29Speaker 1: 3 o'clock Eastern, First Things First. Nick Wright, what's going on?
- 0:33Speaker 2: Bo, great to see you. Great to talk to you.
- 0:35Speaker 2: How are you this morning?
- 0:36Speaker 1: Dude, I'm good. I'm loving that, like, we're getting to
- 0:39Speaker 1: a place. It's very interesting. And I don't think people
- 0:41Speaker 1: understand this. You and I have... More times than people
- 0:45Speaker 1: would recognize where we are in dead on alignment, right?
- 0:50Speaker 1: Where I will be at your house and we're talking
- 0:52Speaker 1: about something and one goes first and the other is like, oh,
- 0:55Speaker 1: that is exactly what I was going to say. Which
- 0:57Speaker 1: makes it even more fun to me when we are
- 1:00Speaker 1: completely divergent or largely divergent, which is often in spirit,
- 1:05Speaker 1: usually your discrimination against skinny people. which I find to
- 1:08Speaker 1: be odd because he kind of in the crew, right?
- 1:10Speaker 1: Like I don't, I don't, I don't really understand it. Now,
- 1:12Speaker 1: first I'll tell people two places where Nick and I
- 1:14Speaker 1: were in complete alignment. I got a text from Nick
- 1:18Speaker 1: where he saw that. I said that the Pacers should
- 1:21Speaker 1: have fired Kevin Pritchard, but that dumb shit he said
- 1:24Speaker 1: on Twitter. And Nick was like, I forced this into
- 1:26Speaker 1: the rundown of my show.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Just so I could say the exact, You can't make
- 1:31Speaker 2: a trade that's a 52-48 coin flip and then be like, man,
- 1:35Speaker 2: I actually thought it was 75-25 because of karma. Like,
- 1:39Speaker 2: you can't. It's the GM equivalent of being in Vegas
- 1:43Speaker 2: walking past the roulette wheel and that stupid little sign's like, wow,
- 1:47Speaker 2: red's come up seven in a row. I guess black
- 1:50Speaker 2: is due. So, yes, that was bad.
- 1:52Speaker 1: That was exactly what he said. And then I saw
- 1:55Speaker 1: that Nick said the thing that I had been meaning
- 1:57Speaker 1: to say but I forgot, which was... bringing your kids
- 2:01Speaker 1: to press conferences after a loss is actually some suck-ass shit.
- 2:05Speaker 1: You did not use those words. I did not. But
- 2:07Speaker 1: Joel Embiid definitely plays the shield game. But you bring
- 2:12Speaker 1: them to the press conference after a 4-0 sweep? Come on, man,
- 2:15Speaker 1: you can't do that.
- 2:16Speaker 2: I don't know what his intention is, but I know
- 2:19Speaker 2: what the impact is. And the impact of, like, it
- 2:23Speaker 2: should just be a general rule of decorum, which is,
- 2:28Speaker 2: if there's any chance this tough questions need to be asked,
- 2:33Speaker 2: I shouldn't bring my kids like a legitimate question to
- 2:36Speaker 2: ask and beat after that press conference would have been,
- 2:39Speaker 2: do you think you're going to be traded? Not, I
- 2:43Speaker 2: don't even know if he's tradable because of the contract,
- 2:45Speaker 2: but do you think you're going to be traded? But
- 2:48Speaker 2: can you ask that question? If there's a child sitting
- 2:51Speaker 2: there and you're like, wait, am I going to be
- 2:53Speaker 2: breaking news to this kid that he might have to move?
- 2:57Speaker 2: And so I think it started with good intentions. It
- 3:02Speaker 2: started with Steph Curry always winning and bringing Riley and
- 3:05Speaker 2: everyone loved it, but there were no tough questions to
- 3:08Speaker 2: be asked. Steph, to his credit, to my recollection, the
- 3:13Speaker 2: press conference after he got thrown out of the finals
- 3:16Speaker 2: game for whipping his mouth guard into the front row
- 3:18Speaker 2: when LeBron was walking him down, He didn't have Riley
- 3:21Speaker 2: on his lap that day. And so I just think
- 3:23Speaker 2: there's a time and a place for it. But that's
- 3:25Speaker 2: where we're aligned. I'm curious where we're misaligned on Wimby.
- 3:31Speaker 1: We're not so much misaligned. We're misaligned on the fundamental, right? Like,
- 3:36Speaker 1: you know, you're kind of operating on the assumption just
- 3:38Speaker 1: like you did with my man Chet. I don't like
- 3:40Speaker 1: Chet as much as I used to because Victor don't
- 3:42Speaker 1: like Chet that much. You know, you just think all
- 3:45Speaker 1: the skinny guys going to break down. You don't think
- 3:46Speaker 1: we tough enough. You know what I'm saying? Like, I
- 3:49Speaker 1: feel like you're holding out as the last skeptic. Like,
- 3:51Speaker 1: I give you credit for this. You will hold a
- 3:54Speaker 1: take as long as it goes. It seems very obvious
- 3:56Speaker 1: to me that this is the best player in the
- 3:57Speaker 1: NBA for the next 10, 12 years. Like, help me.
- 4:01Speaker 2: 10, 12 years is a long time. So listen, I've
- 4:07Speaker 2: said this before, but it was never more apparent than
- 4:10Speaker 2: last night in the broadcast where they framed a game
- 4:16Speaker 2: that Wimby was fortunate to be playing because he avoided
- 4:20Speaker 2: what would have been a totally reasonable, if not a
- 4:22Speaker 2: little punitive suspension of as if he was the one
- 4:27Speaker 2: who got elbowed in the neck. The entire conceit of
- 4:32Speaker 2: the broadcast was this Wimby's hero return as if he
- 4:38Speaker 2: had been the one who was wrong. And it included
- 4:43Speaker 2: how the game was officiated early when Nas Reed gave
- 4:47Speaker 2: him a little shove to the back and they called
- 4:50Speaker 2: it a delay of game technical foul. And again, I
- 4:54Speaker 2: felt like I was a crazy person. I was like,
- 4:57Speaker 2: everything about this is it's as if Nas had elbowed
- 5:02Speaker 2: Wimby and Wimby valiantly fought through it as opposed to
- 5:06Speaker 2: a 22-year-old who... at 20 was studying all-star skills game competition,
- 5:13Speaker 2: fine print rules, pretending he didn't know what a flagrant
- 5:17Speaker 2: two was right after seeing Nas behind him and clocking
- 5:21Speaker 2: him in the neck. And so I, I, he's obviously
- 5:27Speaker 2: a transcendent talent. He's obviously a great player. And if
- 5:31Speaker 2: we do get Spurs thunder, which I'm not, I don't
- 5:34Speaker 2: think the Timberwolves are quite dead, dead yet, but their
- 5:37Speaker 2: own life support, I'll probably be rooting for the Spurs
- 5:40Speaker 2: because I find the Thunder so irritating. But I can't.
- 5:44Speaker 2: It is the just snap double standard for certain guys
- 5:50Speaker 2: bothers me. If Luka got thrown out of a playoff
- 5:53Speaker 2: game for yelling at a ref, people wouldn't frame the
- 5:56Speaker 2: next game as his valiant return to work. So I
- 6:00Speaker 2: just didn't like it.
- 6:00Speaker 1: So I do agree with you on this, right? That
- 6:03Speaker 1: I don't want to say that I enjoyed him elbowing
- 6:07Speaker 1: Nas Reed. I did enjoy his full on indifference to
- 6:12Speaker 1: the fact that he had done so after the fact.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Like I appreciate even if whether or not he knew
- 6:17Speaker 1: a flagrant to meant an ejection. I feel like it's
- 6:20Speaker 1: on the board that maybe, you know, we don't see
- 6:22Speaker 1: flagrant twos every day.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Right.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Like maybe it's on the board that he does not
- 6:25Speaker 1: know that that means automatic ejection. What I do appreciate
- 6:29Speaker 1: is that he didn't act like an ejection was something crazy.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Right?
- 6:33Speaker 1: It seems that the decision has been made. I'm going
- 6:35Speaker 1: to elbow this dude in the head and if they
- 6:37Speaker 1: put me out of here, they're going to put me
- 6:38Speaker 1: out of here. What I did think was interesting was
- 6:41Speaker 1: how few people framed it truly in the context of
- 6:44Speaker 1: they lost that game and it's because of you and
- 6:46Speaker 1: these guys that you're going to play against next round
- 6:48Speaker 1: are going to have a week to rest up and
- 6:51Speaker 1: get right and your team won't because you lost your
- 6:53Speaker 1: shit and you elbowed this dude in the head. But
- 6:55Speaker 1: I do appreciate that he didn't act like he didn't
- 6:58Speaker 1: elbow the dude in the head.
- 7:00Speaker 2: And I also, listen, Wimby doesn't, this is where track
- 7:04Speaker 2: record and all this stuff really, really matters. He doesn't
- 7:07Speaker 2: have a track record as a dirty player. So I
- 7:10Speaker 2: can chalk this up as a one-off lost his temper,
- 7:14Speaker 2: you know, lost his head for a moment. And now
- 7:17Speaker 2: he's kind of on a dirty player probationary period in
- 7:20Speaker 2: my head because he has, since he's such a young player,
- 7:23Speaker 2: he doesn't have much of a track record of anything.
- 7:25Speaker 2: But assuming he gets through the next year or two
- 7:27Speaker 2: without any instance like this again, it gets wiped from
- 7:30Speaker 2: his record. And, you know, he's just, clean moving forward.
- 7:34Speaker 2: But that last, and I don't, I agree with you.
- 7:39Speaker 2: I like that he kind of owned it once, you know,
- 7:42Speaker 2: Harrison Barnes explained to him what a flagrant two meant.
- 7:46Speaker 2: I just, a lot of what has been taken by
- 7:52Speaker 2: the audience as wimpy criticism is really very often media criticism.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Because It is... I've been doing the TV show for
- 8:05Speaker 2: nine years. I think Wimby is the first superstar to
- 8:14Speaker 2: be thrown out of a game in a playoff game
- 8:18Speaker 2: with the game in the balance. Joker got thrown out
- 8:21Speaker 2: when that game was over and the series was over
- 8:23Speaker 2: when he whacked campaign and we criticized him for it,
- 8:26Speaker 2: but it had no tangible impact on his team. Steph,
- 8:29Speaker 2: when he threw the mouthpiece... He was actually angry. The
- 8:33Speaker 2: reason he threw the mouthpiece was because he had just
- 8:35Speaker 2: been called for his sixth foul.
- 8:37Speaker 1: It was hilarious. Oh my God. That was so funny.
- 8:40Speaker 2: And that was, you know, that was moments before rigged
- 8:44Speaker 2: for ratings or money. Sorry. I saw it live. We'd
- 8:47Speaker 2: heard around the world. And, but so Steph, it was
- 8:51Speaker 2: already out of the game. It's just the difference between
- 8:54Speaker 2: watching it from the bench or from the locker room.
- 8:57Speaker 2: You just don't see that. super in Luca fouled out again.
- 9:03Speaker 2: He didn't get a technical, didn't get a flagrant fouled
- 9:06Speaker 2: out of a finals game. And Brian Windhorst, who I
- 9:10Speaker 2: adore went on sports center 30 minutes later and read
- 9:14Speaker 2: him the riot act and said like, this is why
- 9:17Speaker 2: you've got them. Like, this is the problem with Luca Donchic.
- 9:21Speaker 2: And so it's so rare to have the discourse immediately be,
- 9:28Speaker 2: you know, from the Wimby perspective, as opposed to, again,
- 9:33Speaker 2: to use weird language, the victim's perspective, I thought was off.
- 9:38Speaker 1: And to be fair to Brian, I saw that Brian
- 9:40Speaker 1: was one of the people who came out and was like, hey,
- 9:42Speaker 1: you cost your team a win. Yes, he did.
- 9:44Speaker 2: With Victor, right? And Victor's Brian's guy. Brian didn't pull
- 9:48Speaker 2: any punches on that.
- 9:49Speaker 1: So this is what, the thing that I, where the NBA,
- 9:53Speaker 1: I don't want to say lost me here. Like, They
- 9:56Speaker 1: were not going to suspend Victor for game five after
- 9:59Speaker 1: the ejection in game four. So early in game four,
- 10:02Speaker 1: I think that if that had happened halfway through the
- 10:04Speaker 1: third quarter, rather than early in the second, then there
- 10:08Speaker 1: is possibly a suspension because that really was egregious. Like
- 10:11Speaker 1: you got to, Draymond's going too far to me with the,
- 10:15Speaker 1: what if I had done that? Yeah, but that's you.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Like you, you, you, you, you, you make it somebody else.
- 10:23Speaker 1: And now the point could be, you know, it could
- 10:25Speaker 1: be perhaps made, but there's a reason why we don't
- 10:28Speaker 1: let you get away. That's like when our test got
- 10:29Speaker 1: suspended for seven games for that elbow with James Harden,
- 10:34Speaker 1: he'd already helped incite a riot previously.
- 10:37Speaker 2: Right, the better comp is maybe, because I showed the
- 10:41Speaker 2: Artest video and Wilds correctly pointed out, he's like, bro,
- 10:44Speaker 2: that's Artest's fault, fans. He's on lifetime probation.
- 10:49Speaker 1: J.R.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Smith missed a game during the playoffs for a much
- 10:53Speaker 2: less egregious elbow, but to your point, his elbow came
- 10:57Speaker 2: late in the fourth, and so he didn't really get
- 11:00Speaker 2: penalized much there. Can we talk about the Draymond piece
- 11:02Speaker 2: just for a second?
- 11:03Speaker 1: Yeah, go ahead.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Or do you, I don't want to side.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Do you realize? Does Draymond not remember his own words?
- 11:13Speaker 2: This is the very rough, loose timeline. Draymond almost broke
- 11:18Speaker 2: a teammate's jaw. He then stomped on Sabonis' chest. He
- 11:21Speaker 2: then did a spinning back fist against a different Eastern European.
- 11:24Speaker 2: I think it was a Nerkich. He then put Rudy
- 11:27Speaker 2: Gobert in a headlock. He then checked himself into counseling
- 11:31Speaker 2: because he said he had anger problems.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Yes. That's what happened.
- 11:36Speaker 2: So if, yes, if in the midst of all of that,
- 11:39Speaker 2: you had thrown one, you had a fifth incident, of
- 11:42Speaker 2: course it would be looked at differently. And that's what's
- 11:45Speaker 2: so weird. Like Draymond knows that. Draymond's got to on
- 11:50Speaker 2: an intellectual level know my track record is why if
- 11:54Speaker 2: I did this, people would, you know, be calling for
- 11:58Speaker 2: a harsh punishment. I don't, so I don't know why
- 12:00Speaker 2: he pretended not to know that, but go ahead.
- 12:02Speaker 1: He's not like Ndamukong Suh did. You remember Ndamukong Suh
- 12:05Speaker 1: used to do wild shit, and then he's like, what
- 12:07Speaker 1: are you talking about? And we're like, yo, something's wrong
- 12:08Speaker 1: with that guy. That was the only explanation. But where
- 12:12Speaker 1: the NBA lost me was, it seems very, very clear
- 12:15Speaker 1: that the decision was made, we're not going to have
- 12:17Speaker 1: any hanky-panky in this game, right? I'm sorry, but after
- 12:22Speaker 1: Victor elbows somebody and takes him out like that, The
- 12:27Speaker 1: Timberwolves are allowed one good, really hard foul. Right. Like
- 12:34Speaker 1: it's only right. It's only fair. Somebody's supposed to be
- 12:37Speaker 1: able to go in there. And even it's a flagrant one.
- 12:39Speaker 1: That's fine. Some classic Rick Mahorn, Kevin McHale on Kurt Rambis, shit,
- 12:44Speaker 1: something like that. You get to do that. Right. Like
- 12:48Speaker 1: Minnesota being the type of team that they are. The
- 12:51Speaker 1: only way that you're convincing me that nobody, Jaden McDaniels,
- 12:54Speaker 1: whoever it was, that nobody was like, all right, we're
- 12:56Speaker 1: going to get this one is if it was not
- 12:57Speaker 1: made very clear to them. Ain't going to be no one.
- 13:00Speaker 1: And there should have been one. The people won.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Well, and that's why I found the way the game
- 13:05Speaker 2: was officiated at the beginning. So outrageous. And again, the
- 13:09Speaker 2: Spurs won by a hundred like that. It didn't determine
- 13:12Speaker 2: the game and the Spurs, the Spurs have lost three
- 13:16Speaker 2: playoff games this year. And it's, you know, one Wimby
- 13:20Speaker 2: missed with a concussion. One Wimby got thrown out. And
- 13:24Speaker 2: I guess, Oh, one was game one of this series
- 13:26Speaker 2: when Wimby wasn't scoring. So they, you know, they, they
- 13:29Speaker 2: right now look, it looks like I was wrong again
- 13:32Speaker 2: in these playoffs that they look like the better team,
- 13:35Speaker 2: but the refs went the other way with how tight
- 13:39Speaker 2: they were calling it early. And with that technical delay
- 13:42Speaker 2: of game, they called on Nas Reed for just jostling Wimby,
- 13:45Speaker 2: which was essentially to me, the way John Goble, who
- 13:51Speaker 2: that John Goble's whole crew, it's just a disaster. The, the,
- 13:57Speaker 2: The way they called that game, it was like they
- 14:00Speaker 2: agreed with Mitch Johnson that, you know what, Wimby has
- 14:04Speaker 2: been getting roughed up. It was, you know, justifiable vigilantism
- 14:09Speaker 2: and we're going to protect him. And that was, that
- 14:12Speaker 2: part was just stunning to me. Like legit stunning.
- 14:16Speaker 1: Nobody knows the referees by name like people who put
- 14:19Speaker 1: money on games. I was like, John Goble. And I
- 14:23Speaker 1: was like, oh, he must be an official.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Well, yeah. Well, so his brother's an official, too. But
- 14:27Speaker 2: Goble is the one that Austin Reeves, with LeBron looking
- 14:32Speaker 2: over his shoulder at the end of the game a
- 14:34Speaker 2: couple games ago when they had the little huddle at midcourt.
- 14:38Speaker 2: And Austin Reeves was basically like, you can't talk to
- 14:40Speaker 2: me like that. That was John Goble. Yeah, I don't
- 14:43Speaker 2: like that.
- 14:45Speaker 1: I don't like.
- 14:46Speaker 2: games officiated by John Goble.
- 14:49Speaker 1: My official knowledge is fading a little bit. Like all
- 14:51Speaker 1: my guys are aging out, you know, aging out or
- 14:53Speaker 1: just moving to the side just a little bit. Like
- 14:55Speaker 1: I used to know more of them by name than
- 14:58Speaker 1: I used to. Let me ask you this though about
- 14:59Speaker 1: the Spurs. Are you surprised at how good they are
- 15:02Speaker 1: separate from Victor? Because I did not expect them to
- 15:05Speaker 1: be top to bottom this good. And I think we
- 15:06Speaker 1: are They are really young. Like, De'Aaron Fox is 28.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Harrison Barnes, I want to say, is 32. Everybody else
- 15:14Speaker 1: is 20. And Luke Cornett is 30. Everybody else is
- 15:16Speaker 1: 26 and under.
- 15:19Speaker 2: And their best guys are 22 and under.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Yes.
- 15:22Speaker 2: I mean, I'm the biggest surprise by me, and this
- 15:26Speaker 2: is maybe, or for me, I should say, maybe just
- 15:30Speaker 2: because I didn't watch enough Rutgers, but I don't know
- 15:32Speaker 2: if anyone's going to hold that against me.
- 15:34Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 15:35Speaker 2: I had no idea Dylan Harper was going to be
- 15:37Speaker 2: this good this quickly. Castle, you saw it at UConn
- 15:42Speaker 2: and you saw it building. And Castle's a legitimately just
- 15:48Speaker 2: excellent defensive player and really good offensive player. But Dylan
- 15:52Speaker 2: Harper looks like he's going to be a superstar. And
- 15:58Speaker 2: for him to be this good in his first playoff run,
- 16:01Speaker 2: I think he's 20 years old, is really stunning. I'm
- 16:06Speaker 2: really interested in, as this draft is coming along, how
- 16:11Speaker 2: last year's top four stacks up against this year's top
- 16:16Speaker 2: four long-term, where you've got Flagg, Harper, Knipple, Edgecombe versus
- 16:22Speaker 2: what we think is going to be the top four
- 16:24Speaker 2: of DeBansa, Peterson, Caleb Wilson, and Cam Boozer in one
- 16:28Speaker 2: order or another. But the Spurs all year, won the
- 16:35Speaker 2: non-Wimby minutes. Two of those wins against OKC, Wimby was
- 16:41Speaker 2: on a low minutes restriction. Like they really, they have
- 16:46Speaker 2: nine guys they really, really trust. And as long as
- 16:50Speaker 2: they have Wimby or Cornette on the floor, they have
- 16:53Speaker 2: excellent rim protection. And when Wimby's on the court, they
- 16:58Speaker 2: have maybe the best rim protection in NBA history. Yeah,
- 17:01Speaker 2: they've been, it's really shocking to me how mature they've
- 17:06Speaker 2: already looked so far this postseason.
- 17:09Speaker 1: Yeah, like I thought that this was a next year
- 17:12Speaker 1: sort of proposition, right? And no, that's not happening. And
- 17:15Speaker 1: as soon as somebody tells Victor Wimbenyama, don't take a
- 17:18Speaker 1: single three for the rest of the season, boy, the
- 17:20Speaker 1: sky's the limit once that happens.
- 17:22Speaker 2: So how much of that, so let's circle back to
- 17:26Speaker 2: the skinny guy thing. Because I think the only flaw
- 17:33Speaker 2: in his game, relates or flaws in his game relate
- 17:38Speaker 2: to his body and obviously what makes him so special
- 17:41Speaker 2: is you know the length and all of that but
- 17:44Speaker 2: I think I think because of how cautious they were
- 17:49Speaker 2: with him minutes wise in the regular season he is
- 17:52Speaker 2: not he doesn't have 40 minute playoff conditioning and I
- 17:56Speaker 2: don't think you'll have it anytime this postseason and the
- 18:00Speaker 2: threes thing I think is simply because he gets pushed
- 18:04Speaker 2: around in the low post. If he comes, if at
- 18:09Speaker 2: any point in his career, he doesn't, people always use
- 18:13Speaker 2: the Giannis comp because Giannis came in so skinny, he's
- 18:15Speaker 2: now so big.
- 18:16Speaker 1: Yeah, but that wasn't the same.
- 18:17Speaker 2: No, and if he got Giannis' body, it's game over
- 18:21Speaker 2: for everybody. But if he could just get closer to
- 18:26Speaker 2: mature Rudy Gobert size, then I feel like offensively, He
- 18:33Speaker 2: won't ever have to shoot another three if he doesn't
- 18:35Speaker 2: want to, because the reason he doesn't just live on
- 18:37Speaker 2: the block is because he can get pushed out of that.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Yeah, no, Giannis wasn't skinny for the reasons that I'm
- 18:43Speaker 1: skinny because it's just like that. Giannis was malnourished, right?
- 18:46Speaker 1: Like that was legitimately about three squares a day. And
- 18:50Speaker 1: then I had never even thought of that. Now that
- 18:53Speaker 1: I think about how Yance talks about his upbringing and
- 18:55Speaker 1: like what they had to do, he just didn't. That's
- 18:58Speaker 1: a really good point. I didn't even think about that. Yeah, no,
- 19:00Speaker 1: there's a whole thing, especially in football, with having the
- 19:03Speaker 1: ability to identify guys who just never had adequate nutrition.
- 19:06Speaker 1: And those are the guys that go from being 230 pounds,
- 19:10Speaker 1: maybe coming into school and then turn into being 315.
- 19:13Speaker 1: And it's really just a matter of three squares and
- 19:15Speaker 1: an adequate like workout program. And that was the thing
- 19:17Speaker 1: that happened with Giannis. With Victor, that hasn't been the issue, right?
- 19:20Speaker 1: They've got to figure this out a different way. I
- 19:22Speaker 1: do want to say, ask you to do this about
- 19:24Speaker 1: the Spurs before we get out of here I had
- 19:26Speaker 1: largely believed that De'Aaron Fox was a guy who played
- 19:29Speaker 1: losing basketball and now I don't even think it matters
- 19:31Speaker 1: because he has he wanted to be there to play
- 19:34Speaker 1: with this guy and he sees what that means and
- 19:36Speaker 1: now all he really has to do is De'Aaron Fox
- 19:38Speaker 1: things and throw it throw oops and the team is
- 19:40Speaker 1: fine I just want you to tell the people about
- 19:42Speaker 1: the first time you saw De'Aaron Fox play basketball so.
- 19:45Speaker 2: My son, who is my co-host on What's Right with
- 19:50Speaker 2: Nick Wright, was a big-time high school basketball prospect. Not
- 19:56Speaker 2: on De'Aaron Fox's level, but a mid-to-high-major D1 prospect.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Yeah, 6'8, Texas high school, first team, all-district junior. Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Like, legit. And so he... He played on the same
- 20:09Speaker 2: summer league team as Quentin Grimes, who Grimes' sidebar was
- 20:13Speaker 2: two years younger than everyone on the team and was
- 20:16Speaker 2: just so clearly a pro at 15 years old. But
- 20:21Speaker 2: we also traveled around Texas in the summer to these
- 20:23Speaker 2: AAU tournaments. And one time I walk into a gym
- 20:28Speaker 2: and there's De'Aaron Fox's team is just starting. And this,
- 20:33Speaker 2: you know, my, I feel like every time I tell
- 20:37Speaker 2: this story, Maybe it gets a little more exaggerated, but
- 20:41Speaker 2: I swear I saw him score 40 points in the
- 20:47Speaker 2: first half of a running clock AAU basketball game because
- 20:52Speaker 2: he's just so much faster than everyone. He's got the
- 20:54Speaker 2: ball and got a layup. They pressed get a steal
- 20:57Speaker 2: ball layup, and he was.
- 21:01Speaker 2: Even if my stats are a little off because I,
- 21:03Speaker 2: because I know I've always said it was 40 points
- 21:06Speaker 2: in the first half of running clock AU game. But
- 21:08Speaker 2: every time I say it, I'm like, that doesn't even
- 21:09Speaker 2: seem fucking possible, but I know I saw it. But
- 21:14Speaker 2: he is to this day, the fastest person I've ever seen,
- 21:19Speaker 2: like on the court up close and personal. And so
- 21:22Speaker 2: I always, and then he went to Sacramento and you know,
- 21:25Speaker 2: my wife's family's from Sacramento and, So I always, you know,
- 21:28Speaker 2: had a soft spot for him and liked him. I
- 21:32Speaker 2: really thought that the one light, the beam year, they
- 21:34Speaker 2: were going to beat the Warriors. I still think they
- 21:36Speaker 2: would have. People forget he broke his finger in game
- 21:38Speaker 2: five and it threw off that series a bit. But
- 21:42Speaker 2: I thought it was really, to your point, mature of
- 21:46Speaker 2: him when he's getting out of Sacramento to say most guys,
- 21:49Speaker 2: if they've spent their career in one small market, don't
- 21:52Speaker 2: want to go to another. He went Sacramento to San
- 21:55Speaker 2: Antonio and, and it was because he clocked that he
- 21:58Speaker 2: wanted to play with Victor. Now, with that said, what
- 22:01Speaker 2: kind of sucks for him is if they don't win
- 22:03Speaker 2: the championship, he's the most likely trade piece because of
- 22:08Speaker 2: the salary that, you know, they could use his salary
- 22:12Speaker 2: to get a star if they wanted or, you know,
- 22:15Speaker 2: some maneuverability. But, yeah, I mean, he's the veteran presence
- 22:19Speaker 2: on the team with seven career playoff games prior to
- 22:22Speaker 2: this year.
- 22:23Speaker 1: Yeah, it's Ian Harrison Barnes.
- 22:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:24Speaker 1: It's those two guys. Now, before we get to the break,
- 22:26Speaker 1: I just want to ask you one thing about the
- 22:29Speaker 1: Cavs and Raptors. And I think it's the only question
- 22:30Speaker 1: that matters here. And this is even after Donovan Mitchell
- 22:33Speaker 1: just put up 39 points in one half. The only
- 22:35Speaker 1: question that matters is, can they win this series without
- 22:40Speaker 1: Jim Harden messing the whole thing up?
- 22:43Speaker 2: I don't think so. And I... It is.
- 22:50Speaker 2: It's whenever James Harden, cause he was very good at
- 22:54Speaker 2: the end of game three and he was solid throughout
- 22:57Speaker 2: game four in this piston series. And obviously the story
- 23:02Speaker 2: of game four is Donovan Mitchell going full sleepy Floyd
- 23:06Speaker 2: with 39 in the second half. Every time he has
- 23:10Speaker 2: either a good or solid or excellent playoff game, people come,
- 23:15Speaker 2: come for me. And they're like, what do you have
- 23:17Speaker 2: to say now? And I'm, I'm stunned. It might just
- 23:21Speaker 2: be intentional. People know they're wrong, but they think it's
- 23:27Speaker 2: an opportunity to troll. No one has ever argued that
- 23:33Speaker 2: James Harden doesn't have great playoff games. He has a
- 23:36Speaker 2: ton of great playoff games. This is not an instance of,
- 23:41Speaker 2: it's not, with respect, Julius Randle. a player who just
- 23:46Speaker 2: every year the playoffs come and he goes from fringe
- 23:49Speaker 2: all-star to almost unplayable. The argument with Harden is he
- 23:56Speaker 2: will at least once and very often twice a series
- 24:02Speaker 2: have such an unspeakably bad performance that you will wonder,
- 24:09Speaker 2: is he concussed? What's happening? Does he... Is he okay?
- 24:15Speaker 2: And so James Harden playing well when his team's down
- 24:19Speaker 2: 2-0 or 2-1 is not a shocker. It's the game fives, sixes,
- 24:26Speaker 2: and sevens, or what we saw when the series is
- 24:31Speaker 2: in the balance is where you just know a two
- 24:35Speaker 2: for 11 is coming. You don't know when it's coming,
- 24:38Speaker 2: but a three for nine or two for 11. And
- 24:41Speaker 2: so because of that, I think the Pistons are safe.
- 24:45Speaker 2: With that said, Jalen Duren averaging 20 and 10 all
- 24:50Speaker 2: year and now having, and he's played in two long
- 24:54Speaker 2: series now, having one playoff game with more than 12
- 24:58Speaker 2: points is wild. The fact that Orlando and Cleveland and
- 25:03Speaker 2: their depth, and I'm sorry, in their front line, I mean,
- 25:07Speaker 2: he has scored 15, he had 15 and 15 in
- 25:10Speaker 2: that game seven, which was awesome. But that's his playoff
- 25:14Speaker 2: high this year, and every other game's 12 or less.
- 25:18Speaker 2: The Pistons have to get more from him unless Harden's
- 25:22Speaker 2: just going to give it to him.
- 25:23Speaker 1: I say Cavs-Raptors, and obviously it's Cavs-Pistons. Two thoughts on that. One,
- 25:29Speaker 1: it's one thing if you're Duren and you play the
- 25:32Speaker 1: type of game you play and Wendell Carter can body
- 25:35Speaker 1: up with you and he can stop you, right? Yes.
- 25:39Speaker 1: It's another thing when the tall boys from Cleveland are
- 25:43Speaker 1: doing it because the criticism they've had with them for
- 25:45Speaker 1: years is that they're not big. They're just tall. They're
- 25:48Speaker 1: really good, too. But the question has always been whether
- 25:51Speaker 1: you could have both of them.
- 25:53Speaker 2: Right.
- 25:53Speaker 1: Like Evan Mobley, what Carl Towns is doing right now
- 25:56Speaker 1: for the Knicks tells you in a lot of ways
- 25:59Speaker 1: what you can maybe get out of Evan Mobley if
- 26:00Speaker 1: he was just a little bigger. Put him at the
- 26:04Speaker 1: high post, run the offense through him. He can do
- 26:06Speaker 1: all those things, but he's just not sturdy enough. Those
- 26:09Speaker 1: are the people that Durant should feast on, and he's not.
- 26:12Speaker 2: And that's what he feasted on. What's crazy is that's
- 26:15Speaker 2: why he's going to be second team All-NBA, because he
- 26:18Speaker 2: feasted on it all year long. He stepped his game
- 26:22Speaker 2: up when Cade went down. And so that has been
- 26:28Speaker 2: really disappointing and surprising. I assumed, I guess totally incorrectly,
- 26:34Speaker 2: that he was a guy, I thought he had very
- 26:37Speaker 2: little chance, Bo, of being like a playoff riser. Like
- 26:41Speaker 2: this guy's 20-10 in the regular season. We're coming to playoffs,
- 26:45Speaker 2: he's 25-12. Didn't seem like he had that type of game.
- 26:47Speaker 2: But I also thought he was going to be kind
- 26:50Speaker 2: of inoculated from being a playoff dropper. I just thought
- 26:53Speaker 2: he was going to give you what he always gives you.
- 26:57Speaker 2: And if they're going to get out of this series,
- 26:58Speaker 2: he has to get back to who he was in
- 27:00Speaker 2: the regular season. And that, by the way, probably concludes
- 27:04Speaker 2: the Cavs-Pistons discussion for, you know, not just your podcast.
- 27:10Speaker 2: I don't know if it's going to make the TV
- 27:11Speaker 2: show this week. I'm just telling you that it is
- 27:15Speaker 2: not that captivating of a series.
- 27:19Speaker 1: The long-run question we're going to have is... if James
- 27:23Speaker 1: Harden is becoming playoff unplayable. And that happens to guys
- 27:26Speaker 1: who are regular season playable. Montrezl Harrell became playoff unplayable.
- 27:30Speaker 1: And that's why he is somewhere hilariously speaking another language.
- 27:35Speaker 2: Enos Kanter. It's why he's trying to ruin the country.
- 27:38Speaker 1: Yes.
- 27:40Speaker 2: He had to find a different grift. Yeah.
- 27:41Speaker 1: You get to a place where you can't play. You
- 27:44Speaker 1: just can't play the seven games.
- 27:47Speaker 2: So on that note, because I am interested in this.
- 27:53Speaker 2: Harden has a $ 42 million player option. The assumption from
- 27:58Speaker 2: everyone was that Cavs, you know, when they traded for him,
- 28:02Speaker 2: had agreed he's going to opt out and they will
- 28:04Speaker 2: extend him. I don't think if you're Cleveland, you can
- 28:09Speaker 2: do that. Year 18, Jim Harden?
- 28:13Speaker 1: Say it again? Year 18, Jim Harden.
- 28:15Speaker 2: I don't think you can do that. Even at a
- 28:19Speaker 2: lower number. So does... Does Harden opt in? Because you
- 28:25Speaker 2: don't ever see stars opt in to player options.
- 28:29Speaker 1: No.
- 28:29Speaker 2: But if I'm Harden, I don't know where I'm getting
- 28:33Speaker 2: anywhere close to $ 40 million. I mean, I guess there
- 28:37Speaker 2: might be a team that says, we just want, because
- 28:40Speaker 2: in the regular season, he is still super valuable. He
- 28:44Speaker 2: raises your floor. He plays all the time. He's durable.
- 28:50Speaker 2: he helped stimulate your city's nightclub economy. There's a lot
- 28:53Speaker 2: of good things to having James Harden in the regular season. Um,
- 28:57Speaker 2: but I'm really curious what he does with that player option.
- 29:00Speaker 2: I'm also curious because I think that might have a
- 29:04Speaker 2: little bit of an impact on where we see LeBron James.
- 29:06Speaker 1: Yeah. Now last thing before we go into break about
- 29:09Speaker 1: that series, it is the most aggressive Tobias Harris that
- 29:11Speaker 1: I've ever seen. And I just want to take this
- 29:13Speaker 1: moment to point out that Tobias Harris, um, At the
- 29:17Speaker 1: end of this contract, this is his last year of
- 29:19Speaker 1: his contract, he has made over $ 300 million in the
- 29:23Speaker 1: NBA and has received literally one third team All-NBA vote
- 29:28Speaker 1: his whole career. No all-star team, no all-defense team, no
- 29:33Speaker 1: six-man of the year, no votes for any of these things,
- 29:37Speaker 1: and $ 300 million. Brother, we salute you.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Tobias Harris was... First Things First started in September of 2017,
- 29:49Speaker 2: and he was one of our first-ever in-studio NBA guests.
- 29:55Speaker 2: It was that season or right after that season that...
- 29:59Speaker 2: I just remember him being in there. And he was
- 30:03Speaker 2: just about to get his second contract extension. Like, second
- 30:08Speaker 2: big contract. He had gotten one already. That was nine
- 30:12Speaker 2: years ago. And with everything that you're saying... He, after
- 30:19Speaker 2: not having back-to-back 20-point games all year, had seven straight
- 30:24Speaker 2: recently in the playoffs. He's been absolutely, from the 3-1
- 30:30Speaker 2: down in Orlando to the 2-0 lead against Cleveland, he
- 30:37Speaker 2: has been the Pistons' second-best player, which is, you know, again,
- 30:42Speaker 2: goes back to the Durant stuff. And also, Osar Thompson's
- 30:45Speaker 2: having a rough series. But it's a testament to him who,
- 30:49Speaker 2: you know, this was my guy, you know, the now-fired
- 30:52Speaker 2: Daryl Morey. This was his vision with him in Philly.
- 30:55Speaker 1: Yep, I'd say. Coming up next, we'll talk about LeBron
- 30:58Speaker 1: James and where we go from here with him on
- 31:01Speaker 1: The Right Time. You can predict the playoff action all

- 32:05Speaker 1: All right, we are back with Nick Wright. We mentioned briefly,
- 32:08Speaker 1: you know, I want to take some LeBron, the time
- 32:11Speaker 1: to get into this LeBron thing. But I was talking
- 32:14Speaker 1: to a buddy of mine in Philly about, I wonder
- 32:16Speaker 1: what Daryl's going to do now to fix the team.
- 32:17Speaker 1: And they're like, what makes you think Daryl's going to
- 32:19Speaker 1: be the one to do these things? And then I
- 32:21Speaker 1: looked up and Daryl Morey got fired. And I got
- 32:24Speaker 1: to say, like, he did well in the draft. You know,
- 32:27Speaker 1: I'm not the biggest Daryl guy, but I don't feel
- 32:30Speaker 1: like what happened to this team is Daryl's fault.
- 32:32Speaker 2: Well, here's the thing that is... And these were sports
- 32:36Speaker 2: a little unfair a couple ways. And again, I am
- 32:40Speaker 2: a big Darryl guy. I like him a lot personally.
- 32:42Speaker 2: I don't pretend to be fully unbiased on this. I
- 32:47Speaker 2: have a relationship with the guy. But I try to
- 32:50Speaker 2: be fair and transparent about it. And there were obvious... Listen,
- 32:56Speaker 2: he went... Joel Embiid has a three-year $ 190 million extension
- 33:00Speaker 2: that hasn't kicked in. Paul George... up until recently, looked
- 33:04Speaker 2: like he might have the worst contract in the league.
- 33:07Speaker 2: George ascended enough at the end where maybe that stabilized
- 33:11Speaker 2: to a degree. There are some really big, you know,
- 33:16Speaker 2: you'd like things that haven't gone right. And so people
- 33:19Speaker 2: get fired for that. Like, I don't think it's outrageous
- 33:21Speaker 2: that they fired him. What I do think is wildly
- 33:27Speaker 2: unfair to me is he is getting annihilated for Jared
- 33:34Speaker 2: McCain playing well for Oklahoma City when it is so
- 33:39Speaker 2: clear he got a mandate from ownership to get under
- 33:43Speaker 2: the luxury tax, and that's why they traded Jared McCain.
- 33:47Speaker 2: So they got a first-round pick in four seconds for
- 33:50Speaker 2: Jared McCain. He said he thought they were selling high.
- 33:54Speaker 2: You then see the guy just shooting flames out his
- 33:56Speaker 2: ass from three against the Lakers, and it's like, man,
- 33:59Speaker 2: we sure could have used him. But that was something... he,
- 34:03Speaker 2: you know, I, no GM wants to just give away
- 34:07Speaker 2: a player and get no player in return when you're
- 34:10Speaker 2: trying to win right there. And you're going to be
- 34:12Speaker 2: judged on right there. And you say, you know, drafted. Well,
- 34:17Speaker 2: the maxi pick and development is one of the best
- 34:21Speaker 2: draft accomplishments of the last decade. He was, where was,
- 34:26Speaker 2: I'm going to check real quick. Uh, where was Maxie taken?
- 34:30Speaker 2: I know he was, was he late lottery? No, he
- 34:32Speaker 2: wasn't even in the lottery. I want to say he
- 34:33Speaker 2: was like early twenties, right?
- 34:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:35Speaker 2: He was 21st pick and he's one of the 15
- 34:38Speaker 2: best players in the league. And so, and you know,
- 34:42Speaker 2: people are killing him on the McCain thing. The flip,
- 34:45Speaker 2: the opposite of the McCain thing was stealing Quentin Grimes
- 34:48Speaker 2: from Dallas. But you know, it, let me ask you
- 34:51Speaker 2: this and then we can do LeBron just quickly. If
- 34:55Speaker 2: they had just lost game seven to Boston, down 3-1,
- 35:01Speaker 2: get it to game seven and lose, as opposed to
- 35:04Speaker 2: winning that game and then getting curb stomped by the Knicks,
- 35:08Speaker 2: I'm not sure if he's fired. I think if it's like, oh,
- 35:12Speaker 2: we got unlucky with the Embiid appendectomy, we kind of
- 35:15Speaker 2: acquitted ourselves well in this series, no one gave us
- 35:18Speaker 2: a chance, but because they won it, And people got
- 35:22Speaker 2: their hopes up and then they just get eviscerated. Now
- 35:25Speaker 2: he's fired. So I don't know.
- 35:27Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I think what did him in ultimately is
- 35:31Speaker 1: going to be the thing to do him in is
- 35:32Speaker 1: the embeding station that every single one of us would
- 35:34Speaker 1: have signed and be to. There was really no other option.
- 35:37Speaker 2: No choice.
- 35:37Speaker 1: Yeah, they were too good. They were too good to
- 35:39Speaker 1: tear it down. Like, I think that's the part to
- 35:41Speaker 1: be fair to him is they were too good to
- 35:42Speaker 1: tear him down. But also Daryl's a dude making a
- 35:45Speaker 1: shitload of money from a guy that did not hire
- 35:47Speaker 1: him in the first place, who I'm sure has his
- 35:49Speaker 1: own numbers walk he thinks can do this but let's
- 35:52Speaker 1: talk about LeBron with the Lakers I am inclined to
- 35:56Speaker 1: agree with you I think the LeBron time in LA
- 35:59Speaker 1: has been a little weird and I don't know how
- 36:01Speaker 1: good it's felt for Lakers fans but I do think
- 36:04Speaker 1: that people have forgotten what an irrelevant franchise they were
- 36:06Speaker 1: before LeBron showed up like they're definitely better for the
- 36:10Speaker 1: time that he spent there they won a championship I
- 36:13Speaker 1: thought it was going to go a little better than
- 36:14Speaker 1: it has but I can't say it's gone poorly, right?
- 36:17Speaker 1: It's also a new era of the NBA where parody
- 36:19Speaker 1: has been kind of mandated by regulation in the cap
- 36:22Speaker 1: and everything else. But I have no idea what is
- 36:26Speaker 1: the move for him at this point. I don't know
- 36:29Speaker 1: if I'm running a team, if what, it's kind of
- 36:34Speaker 1: like when Barry Bonds became available in 07. Now the
- 36:36Speaker 1: difference is nobody liked Barry Bonds. Barry Bonds was one
- 36:39Speaker 1: of the 10 best players in baseball and nobody picked
- 36:40Speaker 1: him up because they just decided there wasn't a good
- 36:42Speaker 1: fit for him in a place um you have suggested
- 36:46Speaker 1: if i'm not mistaken you tell me if i'm wrong
- 36:48Speaker 1: here that the knicks would be a great place for
- 36:50Speaker 1: lebron and i thought you liked us being friends because
- 36:52Speaker 1: i just don't know how it would be possible to
- 36:54Speaker 1: be around you if new york if lebron is actually
- 36:57Speaker 1: in new york city.
- 36:58Speaker 2: I think listen i do think that assuming the knicks
- 37:02Speaker 2: don't win the championship i think that the if they
- 37:05Speaker 2: win the championship it's moot i i think the knicks
- 37:08Speaker 2: would be a good fit i can i Real quick,
- 37:11Speaker 2: before we look forward, can we look back on the...
- 37:15Speaker 2: Because I'm... I am dismayed at not only the revisionist
- 37:22Speaker 2: history about LeBron's tenure with the Lakers, but the revisionist...
- 37:30Speaker 2: I don't know what's contemporary analysis, I guess. LeBron James,
- 37:36Speaker 2: in his time with the Lakers... the Lakers had as
- 37:41Speaker 2: much team success as the Nuggets have had in Nikola
- 37:46Speaker 2: Jokic's entire career and the Bucs had in Giannis' entire career.
- 37:52Speaker 2: One finals trip, one championship, one other deep playoff run,
- 37:59Speaker 2: and that's it. Would anyone in the world argue that
- 38:04Speaker 2: that the Yokeage Nuggets era has been a failure. The
- 38:09Speaker 2: Bucs-Yannis era has been a failure. Of course not. And
- 38:13Speaker 2: when LeBron got to the Lakers, nobody was saying, oh,
- 38:20Speaker 2: he's about to win a bunch of championships there. It was,
- 38:24Speaker 2: he's 34. It's the Western Conference. They have been the
- 38:29Speaker 2: worst team in the league for six years. It was, it, it,
- 38:34Speaker 2: The expectations from the general public were low, and within
- 38:39Speaker 2: two years, they're champions. And the next year, they're the
- 38:42Speaker 2: Vegas favorite to repeat until Solomon Hill somersaults into his ankle.
- 38:47Speaker 2: And so I just... I think LeBron's time with the
- 38:50Speaker 2: Lakers was a huge success, and I don't know how
- 38:53Speaker 2: anyone can read it any way differently.
- 38:56Speaker 1: I did think that... I think the read is... I
- 39:00Speaker 1: don't think it's been unsuccessful. I think it's fair if
- 39:02Speaker 1: one has found it to be a bit disappointing, right?
- 39:05Speaker 1: Because Jokic and his team having that run comes with
- 39:08Speaker 1: Jokic exceeding our initial expectations for him. The Giannis tenure,
- 39:13Speaker 1: I think, is actually interesting because it has some terribly
- 39:16Speaker 1: embarrassing postseason flameouts that we do not really hold against him. Again,
- 39:22Speaker 1: because I think the expectations that we started with were
- 39:26Speaker 1: just a little bit different. I just... Did you read
- 39:30Speaker 1: yaron weisman's book uh um i've not.
- 39:33Speaker 2: Read the whole thing i i have it and i
- 39:35Speaker 2: need to read the whole thing i've not.
- 39:36Speaker 1: Yeah yeah it's it's a good read um and i
- 39:39Speaker 1: think it kind of just speaks to it's been an
- 39:41Speaker 1: awkward time period for him there just because he showed
- 39:45Speaker 1: up into the land of Kobe staying, right? Like, I
- 39:48Speaker 1: don't think anybody has, I think everybody underestimated what the
- 39:52Speaker 1: awkwardness would be for him simply being on the Lakers.
- 39:57Speaker 2: I think that's true. It's also been awkward because for
- 40:00Speaker 2: the last four years, the team has operated as if
- 40:03Speaker 2: they are annoyed. He isn't worse. They have operated as
- 40:07Speaker 2: if we had a plan that, For by 2022, for
- 40:11Speaker 2: you to be washed adjacent, and so we can move on,
- 40:15Speaker 2: and so they have just been stuck in neutral. And
- 40:19Speaker 2: that's why, when they got Luka, and... everyone's like, well,
- 40:24Speaker 2: you need a lot of time, a whole offseason or more,
- 40:27Speaker 2: to build, to get the right types of players to
- 40:30Speaker 2: play around Luka. That would be true for about 26 teams.
- 40:34Speaker 2: You know the one team it shouldn't be true for?
- 40:36Speaker 2: The guy who Luka modeled his fucking game after in LeBron.
- 40:40Speaker 2: You know what players you need to have around Luka?
- 40:43Speaker 2: The exact players you need to have around old LeBron.
- 40:47Speaker 2: And so that part's been frustrating. So I, yeah, I mean,
- 40:50Speaker 2: I think that to move forward, I understand if he
- 40:54Speaker 2: wants to stay with the Lakers. That would bum me
- 40:58Speaker 2: out because I don't, I understand he is not, if LeBron,
- 41:04Speaker 2: at this point in his career, if LeBron's your best player,
- 41:08Speaker 2: you're not winning the championship. So he's in a different
- 41:11Speaker 2: part of his career and he needs to go somewhere
- 41:13Speaker 2: where someone else can be, you know, the highest usage.
- 41:17Speaker 2: I get that. But the delta between that and taking
- 41:21Speaker 2: a full-time backseat at the end of his career to
- 41:24Speaker 2: Austin Reeves is too big for me. I enjoyed watching
- 41:29Speaker 2: this LeBron playoff run, as brief as it was, because
- 41:33Speaker 2: we got to see hand on the joystick in full
- 41:36Speaker 2: control LeBron again. And so I think Cleveland, if they
- 41:41Speaker 2: move on from Harden, with Donovan being the number one
- 41:45Speaker 2: scorer and best player, but LeBron kind of controlling the offense,
- 41:50Speaker 2: or The Knicks are interesting if they, like say the
- 41:54Speaker 2: Knicks make the finals and just get waxed in the finals,
- 41:59Speaker 2: losing five and it's bad. Then I do think a LeBron,
- 42:04Speaker 2: Mikael Bridges sign and trade, because Bridges is the exact
- 42:08Speaker 2: type of player you need alongside Luka, is, and the
- 42:12Speaker 2: Knicks might be, you know, not, the Knicks might like
- 42:17Speaker 2: the idea of having a shorter contract in that salary
- 42:20Speaker 2: spot I think that could make a lot of sense
- 42:23Speaker 2: for a lot of people.
- 42:26Speaker 1: I think there appears to be a huge difference between
- 42:29Speaker 1: 82 game Austin Reeves and seven game Austin Reeves. And
- 42:33Speaker 1: the Lakers need to be very, very careful about what
- 42:35Speaker 1: they ultimately decide to do with him, because I think
- 42:38Speaker 1: there's a ride high with him because he has exceeded
- 42:40Speaker 1: all expectations that anybody has had. But he is not granted.
- 42:43Speaker 1: There's been an injury factor this year, but he has
- 42:45Speaker 1: not been the same player in the postseason this year
- 42:47Speaker 1: or last year. as to what he had been previously.
- 42:51Speaker 1: That's where the Lakers, I think, have themselves in a
- 42:54Speaker 1: bit of a bind.
- 42:56Speaker 2: Yeah, but I don't know what they're going to do
- 42:57Speaker 2: because he's a true unrestricted free agent and the Nets
- 43:01Speaker 2: will just offer him the max. Yeah. So maybe he'll
- 43:05Speaker 2: take a little less to stay with the Lakers. And
- 43:08Speaker 2: I think he wants to stay with the Lakers and
- 43:10Speaker 2: he and Luke have an amazing relationship. He and Brown
- 43:12Speaker 2: have a great relationship, but I don't know if Brown
- 43:14Speaker 2: will be there. But listen, this is... Austin Reeves has
- 43:18Speaker 2: improved so much each and every year from undrafted to
- 43:21Speaker 2: where he is. I'm not going to put a ceiling
- 43:24Speaker 2: on what he can do next because he's earned the
- 43:28Speaker 2: right to say he's gotten better in every way. But
- 43:31Speaker 2: Austin Reeves, this goes back to the theme of today's show,
- 43:34Speaker 2: my overall skepticism of skinny athletes. I have a huge
- 43:40Speaker 2: problem with professional basketball players who don't have defined muscular
- 43:46Speaker 2: structure in their arms.
- 43:47Speaker 1: The Paul Pierce class of player.
- 43:50Speaker 2: Well, at least Paul was big. But yes, to the...
- 43:56Speaker 2: And for Paul, I have no idea how much that
- 44:01Speaker 2: level of alcohol consumption affects your body type. But Austin
- 44:07Speaker 2: has to get stronger. He might not be able to
- 44:10Speaker 2: get faster. He can get stronger. And OKC bullied him.
- 44:14Speaker 2: And so this offseason... He doesn't have to come back
- 44:18Speaker 2: full Caruso where it looks like, you know, he's had
- 44:21Speaker 2: a body transformation, but he needs to get stronger. And
- 44:25Speaker 2: if I'm the Lakers, I'm going to be paying him
- 44:27Speaker 2: $ 50 million a year. I need him to come back
- 44:32Speaker 2: looking a little more Jack.
- 44:34Speaker 1: I think it's fair. I think it's fair, right? Because
- 44:38Speaker 1: he's not even, it's not even just that he's not Jack.
- 44:40Speaker 1: He's not Jack and he don't never have no professional haircut. Yeah.
- 44:45Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 44:47Speaker 2: That's the white guy from Arkansas thing. I give him
- 44:49Speaker 2: a pass on that.
- 44:50Speaker 1: Yeah, no, no, no. He's been playing basketball too long, man.
- 44:53Speaker 1: Any white man in the NBA who still lets white
- 44:56Speaker 1: people cut his hair, I know who you voted for.
- 44:59Speaker 1: Like obviously you have not immersed yourself in. He has
- 45:04Speaker 1: not immersed himself in the culture. If you can't go,
- 45:07Speaker 1: go get you a haircut with the other cats, you know,
- 45:10Speaker 1: you could do better than this. I know Luca. I
- 45:12Speaker 1: don't think Luca's still letting a white man cut his hair.
- 45:14Speaker 1: He from a whole nother country that ain't got black
- 45:17Speaker 1: people in.
- 45:17Speaker 2: My guess is it is a white guy cutting his hair,
- 45:20Speaker 2: but it's a white guy from Eastern Europe with the, like,
- 45:25Speaker 2: listen the mean streets of Slovenia got more in common
- 45:29Speaker 2: with Camden New Jersey than you think like the tough
- 45:34Speaker 2: parts of Eastern Europe had on a swivel like and
- 45:38Speaker 2: so so I don't know who's cutting Luca's hair but
- 45:42Speaker 2: I know that there's a lot going on in the
- 45:45Speaker 2: back of that business.
- 45:47Speaker 1: Yeah yeah no no I talked to a buddy of
- 45:49Speaker 1: mine he talked about he's been over there one of
- 45:51Speaker 1: them countries he's like 30-story buildings with window units, baby.
- 45:56Speaker 1: They over there keeping your head above water. Learning the
- 46:00Speaker 1: breaks when you can't. That's where they are. But no, if...
- 46:05Speaker 1: It's so interesting with LeBron in this place because... He's
- 46:09Speaker 1: still good enough to be good. I know that sounds obvious,
- 46:12Speaker 1: but I can't think of any other way to put
- 46:13Speaker 1: it right. He's still good enough to be good. He's
- 46:15Speaker 1: not good enough to be your number one option. He
- 46:17Speaker 1: did a much better job off the ball as a
- 46:20Speaker 1: tertiary figure than I thought that he could have or
- 46:23Speaker 1: would have been down to. I'm just kind of like. hey, brother,
- 46:27Speaker 1: you don't have to keep on doing this. And I
- 46:29Speaker 1: guess he wants to, but, like, the Lakers seem like,
- 46:31Speaker 1: for what his future ambitions seem to be, the perfect
- 46:34Speaker 1: place to go ahead and move into retirement, right? Like,
- 46:38Speaker 1: we've seen guys do that. Will Chamberlain is a great example,
- 46:40Speaker 1: where you wrap your career with the Lakers and then
- 46:42Speaker 1: you become an L.A. fixture from then on out. That
- 46:46Speaker 1: seems like the play, but that's easy for me to
- 46:49Speaker 1: say because I'm not the one who can still play
- 46:51Speaker 1: basketball really well and get $ 40, $ 50 million a year
- 46:54Speaker 1: for it. So.
- 46:56Speaker 2: it is so fascinating because the other element of this is, is,
- 47:03Speaker 2: has Bronny improved enough that in the, depending on the
- 47:07Speaker 2: Lakers off season goes, Bronny, Bronny is going to be
- 47:11Speaker 2: like their ninth man in the rotation. And if, if
- 47:16Speaker 2: he has the question, I would, if he has improved enough,
- 47:22Speaker 2: the question I would then have is, For LeBron, is
- 47:26Speaker 2: there an element of, I'll bring up my podcast for
- 47:28Speaker 2: the second time. If Netflix came to me and was like, hey,
- 47:35Speaker 2: we'll triple what you make doing the pod, but it's
- 47:41Speaker 2: just solo. It's just you, your son's not in it.
- 47:45Speaker 2: I think I would say not interested. Like my entire
- 47:49Speaker 2: enjoyment out of it comes from doing it with him.
- 47:53Speaker 2: There might be a part of LeBron that the thing
- 47:57Speaker 2: that is most fun to him was those playoff minutes
- 48:01Speaker 2: with Bronny and the idea of having real regular season
- 48:05Speaker 2: minutes with him might trump all of it. Flip side
- 48:07Speaker 2: of that is Bronny might, if he has earned his
- 48:10Speaker 2: way into the rotation, I don't know if he has
- 48:11Speaker 2: or not, he might feel the exact opposite. He might
- 48:14Speaker 2: be like, no, I want to do this on my own.
- 48:17Speaker 2: So there's that piece of it. There is the financial
- 48:21Speaker 2: piece of it. There is the fact that the Lakers,
- 48:23Speaker 2: when it looked like in January that LeBron finally had
- 48:26Speaker 2: fallen off the cliff, Baxter Holmes has that article where
- 48:31Speaker 2: Jeannie Buss is, you know, through sources or whatever, basically
- 48:34Speaker 2: saying how annoyed she's been the last couple of years
- 48:37Speaker 2: of the LeBron era. And that seemed to legitimately hurt
- 48:40Speaker 2: LeBron's feelings. So there's that piece of it. Then there's
- 48:44Speaker 2: also the, if he wants to win another championship as
- 48:49Speaker 2: a key piece, where is the best place for him?
- 48:53Speaker 2: So I'm going to throw out one that I do
- 48:55Speaker 2: not think is likely, but it piqued my antenna when
- 49:00Speaker 2: a month and a half ago, McMiniman included them in
- 49:03Speaker 2: his article about where LeBron could go. Because the team
- 49:07Speaker 2: is owned by one of his friends. Because the team
- 49:11Speaker 2: has on his coaching staff another one of his friends.
- 49:14Speaker 2: And it is your Denver Nuggets, Bo.
- 49:17Speaker 1: I see the vision.
- 49:20Speaker 2: And that is a fact.
- 49:22Speaker 1: Now, it'd be weird.
- 49:23Speaker 2: Seeing LeBron finish his career in Denver, I think, objectively,
- 49:26Speaker 2: would be weird. But because they got beaten round one...
- 49:33Speaker 2: it wouldn't look you know and because they appear to
- 49:35Speaker 2: be stuck like i don't know how they get back
- 49:38Speaker 2: to contention level that would be interesting and then the
- 49:41Speaker 2: one team we haven't talked about of course is golden
- 49:43Speaker 2: state but they that would just be like a almost
- 49:48Speaker 2: harlem globetrotters like come see the attraction you're not winning anything.
- 49:52Speaker 1: There and they don't like you man The fans. That
- 49:57Speaker 1: is a great point.
- 49:58Speaker 2: The fans do not like you.
- 50:00Speaker 1: You'd be doing the same thing you just did, but
- 50:02Speaker 1: even to a different degree. Like, the Lakers fans had
- 50:06Speaker 1: a rivalry with you that kind of didn't really exist, right? Like,
- 50:09Speaker 1: you know, you go to the Warriors, they don't like you.
- 50:14Speaker 1: And I'm not sure how much the guys on the team,
- 50:17Speaker 1: I'm sure they respect you. Not sure how much they
- 50:20Speaker 1: really like you. And Playing with Steph, man, in the
- 50:25Speaker 1: nature of that offense and everything else, that is a
- 50:27Speaker 1: taxing way to play basketball.
- 50:29Speaker 2: Yep, that's right. No, that's true. But the most important
- 50:33Speaker 2: point is the first one you made, that the fans
- 50:38Speaker 2: acted like the best thing that happened to Warriors fans
- 50:43Speaker 2: all year long was OKC sweeping LeBron. They had a
- 50:48Speaker 2: brief moment of, holy shit, is he going to blow
- 50:51Speaker 2: a 3-0 lead? But a lot of their, the last
- 50:55Speaker 2: few years when Steph Curry hasn't been a real fixture
- 50:58Speaker 2: of the postseason, their postseason enjoyment has been watching LeBron
- 51:03Speaker 2: come up short. That's a good point.
- 51:04Speaker 1: Yeah, no, this is like, it's amazing that he can
- 51:09Speaker 1: continue to play this long. but people are not supposed
- 51:12Speaker 1: to play basketball this long, right? Like it's just, it is,
- 51:15Speaker 1: it is exceeded all our understandings of the, like the
- 51:18Speaker 1: lifespan of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is a result of his, whatchamacallit,
- 51:23Speaker 1: stealing all his money, right? And his house flooding out
- 51:25Speaker 1: and everything else. Otherwise he doesn't keep playing this long,
- 51:28Speaker 1: but again, nobody's been as good as long as LeBron has.
- 51:33Speaker 2: So what do you do? So that is the thing,
- 51:36Speaker 2: because it is, it's almost like, I don't know enough
- 51:40Speaker 2: about the Greek tragedies, but I'm sure there's a good
- 51:43Speaker 2: comp for this or maybe a Twilight Zone episode or something.
- 51:48Speaker 2: The curse of you'll never be bad.
- 51:52Speaker 1: Right.
- 51:52Speaker 2: Like you'll never be forced. Play your way out of
- 51:56Speaker 2: the league.
- 51:57Speaker 1: And apparently you'll never have a terrible injury.
- 52:00Speaker 2: Right.
- 52:02Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 52:03Speaker 2: You'll never be bad. Whenever you decide to stop, you
- 52:08Speaker 2: will truly be deciding to stop, not forced to stop, not,
- 52:13Speaker 2: and that's a, so this is why I said, I
- 52:16Speaker 2: think he's playing 25 years. I think he's playing two more.
- 52:20Speaker 2: I think he's going to do a, a, a true
- 52:24Speaker 2: quarter century of NBA basketball as the final, you know,
- 52:28Speaker 2: line on his resume.
- 52:30Speaker 1: Yeah. Like Michael Jordan suffered his first serious soft tissue
- 52:34Speaker 1: injury in Washington. Yeah. And I haven't read this book.
- 52:39Speaker 1: Joel Anderson has read it. He talks about it all
- 52:40Speaker 1: the time. I forget the name of it, but it's
- 52:42Speaker 1: a book about Jordan's time in Washington. And how miserable
- 52:45Speaker 1: it was?
- 52:46Speaker 2: Yes.
- 52:46Speaker 1: And it's like Etan Thomas looking at Jordan with the
- 52:49Speaker 1: ice packs on and just being like, why are you
- 52:52Speaker 1: doing this? But the answer seemed pretty clear. He was
- 52:55Speaker 1: doing this because he thought the Wizards were his team,
- 52:57Speaker 1: and then Apollyon shit-canned him right after, right? But it
- 53:01Speaker 1: was like, you don't have to do this. Why are
- 53:03Speaker 1: you doing this? And, like, Wizards' Jordan was a very
- 53:07Speaker 1: good basketball player. Obviously wasn't a Michael Jordan-level basketball player.
- 53:11Speaker 2: He was a good player.
- 53:11Speaker 1: Yeah, he was still a really... He was still a, like,
- 53:13Speaker 1: legitimate all-star-level player. You needed to figure out what you
- 53:15Speaker 1: were going to do with him, and there was always
- 53:17Speaker 1: a possibility on a given night he could give you 40. LeBron...
- 53:21Speaker 1: is physically sturdier than that. And LeBron has this computer
- 53:25Speaker 1: up here. So even if his body slows down, he'll
- 53:28Speaker 1: always be able to figure it out. And so, yeah,
- 53:30Speaker 1: you're right. He may wind up out here playing for
- 53:35Speaker 1: 25 years. I just wonder how much fun it is
- 53:37Speaker 1: for him at this point to keep doing this.
- 53:39Speaker 2: It's, it's really, it's really fascinating. I just looked it
- 53:43Speaker 2: up because I knew the book as well when nothing
- 53:45Speaker 2: else matters.
- 53:46Speaker 1: Yes.
- 53:47Speaker 2: Is the book on Jordan's time in Washington. Um, Yeah.
- 53:51Speaker 2: And the other, the other piece of it that, and
- 53:55Speaker 2: he mentioned it, and I do think this will really
- 53:57Speaker 2: matter is what Savannah and Zuri want him to do.
- 54:02Speaker 2: Like the, I mean, it's so, I remember one of
- 54:08Speaker 2: the like little soft reasons that people thought he left
- 54:12Speaker 2: Miami was because Riley spoiled, Riley revealed that Savannah was
- 54:18Speaker 2: having another baby. Um, Like, before the family had revealed it.
- 54:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I remember that.
- 54:23Speaker 2: It was intentional, obviously. It just, like, kind of slipped out.
- 54:26Speaker 1: It was at the exit press conference in 14.
- 54:30Speaker 2: That baby's now 11 years old.
- 54:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 54:34Speaker 2: He left Miami 11 and a half years ago. Like,
- 54:38Speaker 2: it's just... It is truly... Austin Reeves is one of
- 54:45Speaker 2: his longest tenured teammates ever. Yeah. And so... He really
- 54:52Speaker 2: has been with the Lakers a long-ass time, and whenever
- 54:57Speaker 2: he walks away, he'll truly be walking away. The comp
- 55:03Speaker 2: would have been Brady, but Brady's last year in Tampa,
- 55:08Speaker 2: he wasn't good. And he was 46 years old. It
- 55:12Speaker 2: was absurd how good he was so long. But the
- 55:16Speaker 2: year before his last year in Tampa, he almost won
- 55:19Speaker 2: NFL MVP. I think he led the league in passing.
- 55:22Speaker 2: But then his final year in Tampa, they were 8-9,
- 55:25Speaker 2: and you finally saw it. So I don't know. I
- 55:28Speaker 2: really don't know what he's.
- 55:29Speaker 1: Going to do. I just know if he comes to
- 55:31Speaker 1: New York. Man. It's just going to be too much. Look,
- 55:36Speaker 1: it's about to be enough already with the Knicks actually
- 55:38Speaker 1: being good, right?
- 55:41Speaker 2: Here's my thing if he comes to New York, Bo.
- 55:48Speaker 2: What's the upper bound of how much money I'm going
- 55:50Speaker 2: to spend on tickets? I don't know that there is one.
- 55:54Speaker 2: Cause I don't get free tickets. The Knicks don't, I
- 55:57Speaker 2: don't know. Like the people assume like the, the, I've
- 56:00Speaker 2: never gotten a single free ticket from the Knicks, by
- 56:03Speaker 2: the way, Knicks, if you're watching, I'll take them. Um, I, the,
- 56:07Speaker 2: but I, so I buy my tickets, you know, like
- 56:11Speaker 2: everybody and Knicks tickets are so exorbitantly expensive. And that
- 56:19Speaker 2: if they were to get Braun, I don't know, man, I'd,
- 56:22Speaker 2: That fancy car I got, I might sell.
- 56:24Speaker 1: No, because you every now and then will actually pay
- 56:26Speaker 1: for Knicks tickets and I will not. Like I'm just,
- 56:29Speaker 1: it's like if somebody, our guy compliment, he's got great seats.
- 56:32Speaker 1: If he calls me to go, okay, cool. Or like
- 56:34Speaker 1: somebody gets the Viacom seats, I might pull up. I
- 56:37Speaker 1: refuse to pay Knicks ticket prices. What they say is
- 56:41Speaker 1: maybe you just get in right before the game starts,
- 56:43Speaker 1: but I need a little bit more certainty in my life.
- 56:45Speaker 1: You understand what I'm saying?
- 56:46Speaker 2: By the way, quickly, before we go, speaking of our
- 56:51Speaker 2: friend compliment, Because I know he'll watch this and I
- 56:54Speaker 2: haven't talked to him in a bit. He's very busy.
- 56:56Speaker 2: He's very busy because he has created a new television
- 57:01Speaker 2: show based in Las Vegas about Vegas gangsters. And I
- 57:07Speaker 2: am here to tell you, I have not spent as
- 57:10Speaker 2: many hours as I have. In Vegas, I have not
- 57:14Speaker 2: grown my hair out as I have to not get
- 57:17Speaker 2: a cameo as some sleazy Vegas gangster. Like, Brian, I'm available.
- 57:24Speaker 2: I don't know what the SAG rules are, but I'll
- 57:28Speaker 2: do it for free. I need to show up in
- 57:30Speaker 2: that show.
- 57:31Speaker 1: That reminds me, I just got a residuals check for
- 57:33Speaker 1: my cameo appearance in Billions.
- 57:35Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying. You were great in Billions and
- 57:40Speaker 2: you played Bomani Jones.
- 57:41Speaker 1: Yes.
- 57:42Speaker 2: I'm saying.
- 57:42Speaker 1: You want to be somebody.
- 57:44Speaker 2: I don't need a line. I just want to be
- 57:46Speaker 2: one of, I can be a guy that gets thrown
- 57:49Speaker 2: into a dumpster for not paying a debt.
- 57:51Speaker 1: I don't care. I want to be in a Vegas monster.
- 57:52Speaker 1: But that's what I was about to say. Just so
- 57:54Speaker 1: we're clear, Nick doesn't want to play himself. He wants
- 57:57Speaker 1: to play a Las Vegas degenerate who is not Nick Wright.
- 58:02Speaker 1: Check him out. Three o'clock Eastern. First things first. What's right?
- 58:05Speaker 1: Podcast with the homie. The bonds a bird. My brother.
- 58:08Speaker 1: I appreciate you.
