- 0:39SPEAKER_03: Welcome in everybody to the Talk and Tech Podcast, Powered by the Nation, Part of the Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:44SPEAKER_03: I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:48SPEAKER_03: And first off, I want to say I apologize for the audio on my end.
- 0:51SPEAKER_03: My microphone is being stupid.
- 0:53SPEAKER_03: It's ridiculous.
- 0:54SPEAKER_03: It's not working, much like Texas Tech offense wasn't working in the NCAA tournament.
- 0:59SPEAKER_03: So I apologize, but you're going to have to deal with it.
- 1:02SPEAKER_03: Tristan, what's up, my man?
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: Too soon.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: You completely derailed my incoming insult.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: I was going to say your this podcast is not powered by a microphone on your side.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: That's ridiculous.
- 1:12SPEAKER_03: Good joke.
- 1:13SPEAKER_03: Good joke there, guy.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: But you just had to stick a fork, yeah, fork, right into the wounds of what we are feeling still to this day.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: Um, due to NC State.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: I think NC State is the worst program to ever exist.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: They're they're they're they're they're the worst.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: Where we they they totally paid off the refs.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: We didn't totally just get our lunch smashed and smeared across the floor at all.
- 1:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:44SPEAKER_03: Um this is the the most mad I've been.
- 1:48SPEAKER_03: What are we four days at five days?
- 1:52SPEAKER_05: It feels like a year.
- 1:53SPEAKER_03: It feels like a year, but I am I'm still so mad at how Texas Tech played in the NCA tournament.
- 2:00SPEAKER_03: Um some people have kind of gotten over it, but I have not.
- 2:05SPEAKER_03: I'm still very much upset.
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: It's the year 2024, and people are all about like self-love and mental health and all that.
- 2:13SPEAKER_03: And I'm all about I'm all about taking myself down with the ships.
- 2:19SPEAKER_03: I'm upset.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: So but yeah, no, this shit sucks.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: Um, but in the lost episode, it's funny because what a hypocrite we sound like.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: Because in the lost episode, you and I both got on this very podcast and you had a microphone that didn't work.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: It didn't work, and said, so I guess your words didn't really count, but I have to stand by mine that we would be very pleased if we if we lost, like we'd still remain, not we would be, but we would remain pleased if we went out the first round.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: And if I'm getting if I'm gonna be completely honest here, I still feel that way.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: Like I I I obviously the fan in me is like, what a worthless sack of but like here I am sitting at this chair, sipping on my Waterloo.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: Thank God it's the last week of Linz.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: It's holy week, but I'm not feeling the the holy love here with from Texas Tech.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: Um so it's not a beer yet, but I still feel satisfied that we went in, got it in, but were ultimately upset by a much lower seed.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: But I here I am trying to say I still feel okay about it.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: I'm trying to just force the words through my mouth at this point, but honestly, dude, I still do feel okay about it.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: I mean, like what a it's the we the season accomplished what we ever could have wanted in a year one Grant McCastan, as we really talked about in the last season.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: And this is something we've we repeated over and over again in the episodes.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: So my first feelings outside of this is yes, I'm upset, but and I'm I'm extra upset with the way we performed.
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: It would have been one thing to go down, you know, going tooth and nail, but it's not it, it really felt like we were out of it.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: Um, pretty much the entire second half.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: Like first half was not inspiring, but the second half, it just really felt like we're getting smashed.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: Um, but dude, again, I still feel okay with how it all ended up.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: So I just wanted to get those words in because I know you're about to go on a rant.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: You're about to just lean into that laptop speaker and just spew that coors banquet uh words of wisdom and anger and fury out onto the people.
- 4:34SPEAKER_03: The coors banquet is what's keeping me going now.
- 4:37SPEAKER_03: Okay, so I need these to make me feel whole.
- 4:40SPEAKER_03: Um look, I'll feel that way in a week.
- 4:44SPEAKER_03: Oh well.
- 4:45SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna I'm gonna feel that way in a week, exactly what you just said.
- 4:48SPEAKER_03: Yes, this was a great season.
- 4:50SPEAKER_03: Yes, it's a very successful first season with a first-year head coach Graham Castlin, but I don't want to talk about that yet.
- 4:56SPEAKER_03: I could talk about that next week on how once we get a couple portal editions or whatever, everything's gonna be sunshine and roses.
- 5:03SPEAKER_03: But right now, this game was pure and utter disappointment.
- 5:08SPEAKER_03: From the players that stepped on the floor to the way that Grant coached the team, to the way that we just let a team push us around.
- 5:18SPEAKER_03: I mean, we did not look like the Texas Tech that ended the season on a three-game winning streak, played well against BYU in the Big 12 tournament.
- 5:27SPEAKER_03: Like that toughness that Grant McCasslin speaks a ton about, and that the players have bought into this tough culture, you know, that was not present in the NC State game.
- 5:38SPEAKER_03: NC State was absolutely the tougher team.
- 5:42SPEAKER_03: And I do not, I'm so tired of hearing that they were hot.
- 5:45SPEAKER_03: Yes, they're still hot, they're going to the Sweet 16.
- 5:48SPEAKER_03: They won five games in the ACC tournament.
- 5:50SPEAKER_03: I get it, but that team is not better than Texas Tech.
- 5:54SPEAKER_03: And I will say that until I probably die.
- 5:58SPEAKER_03: But NC State was absolutely the tougher team.
- 6:01SPEAKER_03: And the thing about this tournament, the unforgiving thing about the NCAA tournament is that the best team does not always win.
- 6:08SPEAKER_03: And that's what makes the tournament great.
- 6:10SPEAKER_03: And if it wasn't happening to my team right now, I wouldn't be as upset about it.
- 6:15SPEAKER_03: Like to the casual viewer, yes, the NC State story is great.
- 6:19SPEAKER_03: NC State in Oakland in the round of 32 was awesome from a you know outside perspective.
- 6:25SPEAKER_03: But because my team got absolutely smacked in the face by NC State, I'm gonna be a little upset about it.
- 6:32SPEAKER_03: Um like you said, the second half was so disappointing because they went out and just did the same damn thing that they did in the first half, which was pass it to their bigs down low, and no doubles, no anything different on the defensive side of the floor.
- 6:53SPEAKER_03: We just let Rob Jennings or Warren or whoever was guarding one of their bigs to just let them feast on us.
- 7:00SPEAKER_03: And clearly Warren was not fit to play.
- 7:05SPEAKER_03: I mean, he was slow in everything.
- 7:08SPEAKER_03: We let this Napoleon dynamite looking MFer go crazy on us.
- 7:13SPEAKER_03: Dude averages four points a game, and he had 21 against us because our team did not bring it.
- 7:21SPEAKER_03: We like I'm I'm getting a little more upset than what I probably should have.
- 7:27SPEAKER_03: Uh Pop Isaacs, three of 16 from the field in the biggest game of the year.
- 7:32SPEAKER_03: Um your team was injured.
- 7:35SPEAKER_03: I'm not trying to make that an excuse, but Darien's coming off an injury in the Big Toll tournament.
- 7:40SPEAKER_03: That was the first game Warren Washington's played in a while.
- 7:42SPEAKER_03: He was still dealing with the foot injury.
- 7:44SPEAKER_03: Pop was apparently playing with an injury all season.
- 7:47SPEAKER_03: Uh, your Devin Cambridge hasn't played since the beginning of the season.
- 7:51SPEAKER_03: This team was meant for so much more.
- 7:54SPEAKER_03: And injuries plus a really, really bad end of the year did us in.
- 7:59SPEAKER_03: And that sucks.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: I I'm just imagining you.
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: You said that I'm gonna say that Texas Tech was the better team until I die.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: I'm just imagining you as like an 85-year-old man.
- 8:11SPEAKER_02: Like the year was 2024.
- 8:16SPEAKER_02: Texas Tech was in the first round.
- 8:19SPEAKER_02: Listen here, Sonny.
- 8:20SPEAKER_02: That NC state team wasn't shit.
- 8:23SPEAKER_02: This is why we need to put you in a home, granddad.
- 8:26SPEAKER_02: This is it's time.
- 8:28SPEAKER_03: Oh, put me in a home.
- 8:30SPEAKER_03: I don't care.
- 8:30SPEAKER_03: That like I and and it makes me more upset because because, and like I've told you non-stop since that game, the path was there, it was so there for Texas Tech to go far in this tournament.
- 8:44SPEAKER_03: You had you had Oakland next if you just got to go.
- 8:50SPEAKER_04: You had Oakland next, and then the sweet 16, you would have been in freaking Dallas for the Sweet 16.
- 9:00SPEAKER_04: This is I hate it.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: I hate it.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: I hate it.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: I think I think the path was too perfect.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: Like, we needed some sort of like road to hell for us to do well.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: I mean, because I feel like our our uh our uh final four run was a pretty tough stretch.
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: Like we beat some damn.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I feel like I feel like we just need competition that makes you say, oh shit, every time you look at the schedule, rather than oh, this is a very winnable game.
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: This is I guess that's what the team needs.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: So I'm just imagining Steven being pushed into retirement home uh in his 80s, saying, I refuse to die until tech wins a national championship.
- 9:43SPEAKER_03: So the path is there! The path was there, it was so there.
- 9:50SPEAKER_03: I don't know if we would have gotten past Marquette.
- 9:52SPEAKER_03: We would have been playing them in the Sweet 16 if we won.
- 9:54SPEAKER_03: And where is Marquette?
- 9:56SPEAKER_03: Oakland.
- 9:57SPEAKER_03: Uh uh.
- 10:04SPEAKER_03: Illinois?
- 10:06SPEAKER_03: What's your final answer?
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: I uh I would have guessed Illinois as well, but I'll go Indiana.
- 10:12SPEAKER_01: Just just uh mix it up.
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: Marquette sounds very Midwestern.
- 10:17SPEAKER_01: I'm with you.
- 10:20SPEAKER_03: It's in Milwaukee, it's in Wisconsin.
- 10:23SPEAKER_03: Damn it, damn it, nothing is going right for me.
- 10:30SPEAKER_03: No, I I mean we would have been playing Chaka Smart again.
- 10:33SPEAKER_03: That would have been funny.
- 10:34SPEAKER_03: That would have been funny.
- 10:35SPEAKER_03: Um in Dallas.
- 10:37SPEAKER_03: In Dallas, by the way.
- 10:39SPEAKER_03: But I don't know how many Marquette fans are making the trip down to Wisconsin.
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: We would be mitigated.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: I feel like Marquette's got a huge base in DFW.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: I feel like I feel like that Milwaukee DFW pipe DFW pipeline is.
- 10:52SPEAKER_03: We would have absolutely taken over that stadium.
- 10:58SPEAKER_03: And no, we can't.
- 11:00SPEAKER_03: Because we're out, because we played like crap.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: Um so it was the story at the end of the day just getting absolutely booty smacked in the paint.
- 11:11SPEAKER_03: Yes, you made you made no adjustments to their big guys, nothing.
- 11:18SPEAKER_03: DJ Burns ate your shit up when he was in there.
- 11:22SPEAKER_03: I mean, Rob, he was already undersized, he's clearly not as strong.
- 11:27SPEAKER_03: Warren was not ready to play.
- 11:29SPEAKER_03: He was not, I mean, this is the problem with putting in a guy without having any sort of ramp up games towards the end of the season.
- 11:38SPEAKER_03: I'm not saying Warren should have played earlier, but I am saying if he wasn't ready to play, why did you play it?
- 11:44SPEAKER_03: Like, I I get it's his final game of college basketball, I get it, but Warren was a zero for you in one of the biggest games that you needed him.
- 11:54SPEAKER_03: And I it's not really this isn't meant to blame him.
- 11:58SPEAKER_03: Like, he's obviously dealing with a big foot injury, like he was a step slow on everything, and when he was in, it was not good.
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: That's an interesting take.
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: So you are you you really think that we should have just since we were kind of making it work without him, we should have stuck with that plan rather than asking him to tough it out in the big game.
- 12:18SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 12:18SPEAKER_03: I don't know what the right plan was.
- 12:20SPEAKER_03: I I like I would rather have, you know, if you asked me before the game, would you want Warren to play even if he's a little hurt?
- 12:28SPEAKER_03: I would have said yes.
- 12:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
- 12:30SPEAKER_03: I I would have.
- 12:31SPEAKER_03: But after watching this game, after watching Middlebrook's, I I mean, Ben Middlebrooks went at Warren Washington several times and won the battle almost every time.
- 12:43SPEAKER_03: So I hate blaming the guy.
- 12:46SPEAKER_03: I hate railing on him playing on a hurt foot, but that's what lost you the game.
- 12:53SPEAKER_03: Not just Warren, but stuff like that.
- 12:55SPEAKER_03: You were a step slow, you were not playing up to par, you were not intense enough.
- 13:00SPEAKER_03: This is the NCAA tournament, and it seemed like Joe Tucson was the only one that came ready to play.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: That's I think that's I think that's ultimately how I feel too.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: I really feel like there was a lack of intensity, a lack of emotion, a lack of grit and grind.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: It just kind of felt like we're phoning it in of any in of any game of the year to phone it in.
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: An interesting choice for it to be the NCAA round one.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: But um, overall, dude, like we we keep saying, really frustrating results here.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: I obviously it's we we don't need to you know explain why we're upset to the to the listeners, they feel the same way.
- 13:36SPEAKER_01: Um, but again, dude, I I just I'm gonna I'm gonna go ahead and go back to the silver lining here.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: A good season and a great foundation to build this basketball program.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: Grant McCasslin's basketball program up here.
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so hats off to him.
- 13:52SPEAKER_01: And I obviously not the way we would have wanted it to go, but I do stand by that just making the tournament and being such a well-seeded team is is good enough for year one.
- 14:02SPEAKER_01: And I know fans like really don't like saying good enough, but like it really was.
- 14:09SPEAKER_03: It was.
- 14:10SPEAKER_03: It was it was good enough, it was a good season.
- 14:12SPEAKER_03: It I'm like just because I'm frustrated right now after uh you know the stuff is still fresh, it I am gonna look back and say, okay, this was year one at Grandma Castle, and you were a sixth seed, you finished third in the Big 12.
- 14:23SPEAKER_03: It was a really good season, yeah.
- 14:25SPEAKER_03: Um, in a really deep league.
- 14:27SPEAKER_03: So that like that's not gonna get lost, but right now, we when the stuff is still fresh, you still need to talk about why this team stunk in the final game of the year.
- 14:38SPEAKER_03: And so, you know, that was we kind of laid it out, you know.
- 14:43SPEAKER_03: So, but yeah, you're right.
- 14:44SPEAKER_03: It was a good season.
- 14:46SPEAKER_03: There's gonna be a much more silver lining here in uh the next few days.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: Uh now that the offseason's beginning, we're gonna start seeing how this next team is gonna shape up because you know, probably more so than any other sport in college athletics.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: You know, every every year you watch, it seems like you're seeing a totally different team, aside from it's uh like one or two veterans, you know.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: So it'll be interesting to see how things roll out.
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: Um, do you have any final thoughts on the last on the on the game before we like kind of talk about the tournament as a whole?
- 15:17SPEAKER_03: No, I mean I I think I I it's it's tough for me to watch the rest of the team.
- 15:22SPEAKER_03: 100% it's really hard.
- 15:25SPEAKER_03: Like, I love college basketball, I love the sport, I love the you know, like I said, well, the people didn't hear it because it's on the last episode that we tried to record last week, but uh this is the best sporting event of the year.
- 15:36SPEAKER_03: It still is, even if my team lost.
- 15:38SPEAKER_03: Uh, I'm just it's really hard for me to watch.
- 15:40SPEAKER_03: Like, it was hard for me to watch Oakland and C State.
- 15:43SPEAKER_03: It was, and I know there were so many fun storylines, you know, DJ Burns versus Jack Golkey going and raining threes for Oakland, you know.
- 15:52SPEAKER_03: That's the type of stuff that makes the tournament great.
- 15:54SPEAKER_03: But when your team was supposed to be the one playing the other team, it's hard to watch.
- 16:00SPEAKER_03: And that's the fan in me that that I kind of dislike sometimes, but it kind of is what it is.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I I agree with you, dude.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: Like, yeah, I need I need some healing time before I can get right back into it.
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: Um, but you know, it's just kind of funny.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: Here, I I'm I'm I'm I'm looking at the tournament here, you know, the the bracket, and honestly, not a whole lot of like high seeds pushing it far here.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: It looks like NC State, damn it, is the only one like pushing on.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: And that's double digits here.
- 16:32SPEAKER_01: So uh all in all, I mean it's it's been kind of a fairly predictable tournament here.
- 16:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, it's definitely more chalk than I think it normally is, especially last year.
- 16:42SPEAKER_03: You had Florida Atlantic and San Diego State in the final four, like teams you weren't really expecting.
- 16:47SPEAKER_03: But yeah, I think all four one seeds are still in it.
- 16:50SPEAKER_03: Uh a lot of the two seeds are still in it, three seeds.
- 16:53SPEAKER_03: So uh it's definitely not, you know, one of the more fun tournaments, but these teams are I and it seems like there's been more blowouts than normal for NCAA tournament.
- 17:04SPEAKER_03: Like there's been some good games.
- 17:05SPEAKER_03: Houston AM was a really good game, but the majority of them are just like kind of blowouts.
- 17:11SPEAKER_03: It's a little disgraceful.
- 17:14unknown: Yeah.
- 17:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, yeah, well 100%.
- 17:17SPEAKER_01: But hey, who cares at the end of the day?
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: Um, obviously, I I'm just gonna kind of put a a light vote of confidence towards our remaining Big 12 friends out there with Houston, you know, still having an amazing inaugural Big 12 season, Iowa State being plucky out there, uh, Arizona, you know, obviously they're not they're not our bros quite yet, but you know, I'm still gonna give them the big thumbs up.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: And uh so yeah, I mean, so it's still a good show out from uh from our boys out there, but keep it up and uh we'll see how this all things falls.
- 17:48SPEAKER_03: Shout out to our guy TJ Shannon, Illinois.
- 17:51SPEAKER_03: That thing is rolling, he's fantastic.
- 17:54SPEAKER_03: It it kind of sucks again, rooting for a guy who's no longer in a tech uniform, but it's not like TJ went to Kansas uh at Kevin.
- 18:03SPEAKER_03: So uh he's definitely listening to this podcast.
- 18:07SPEAKER_03: I know it.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: Well, he DG like every time we post one.
- 18:11SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 18:12SPEAKER_01: Unbelievable.
- 18:12SPEAKER_03: Guys, he says not enough K Mac.
- 18:15SPEAKER_03: It's like get over it, all right?
- 18:16SPEAKER_03: Uh all right, let's talk about the off-season.
- 18:20SPEAKER_03: Um we are in off-season for Texas Tech basketball.
- 18:24SPEAKER_03: The portal does not rest.
- 18:26SPEAKER_03: The transfer portal is open.
- 18:28SPEAKER_03: The there are already plenty of names in it, high-level names that are going to join different teams next year.
- 18:34SPEAKER_03: Um first off, your initial thoughts just on the state of college basketball, the transfer portal.
- 18:44SPEAKER_03: Do you like it?
- 18:45SPEAKER_03: Is this just something we have to expect?
- 18:47SPEAKER_03: What's what's kind of your thoughts?
- 18:49SPEAKER_01: Honestly, dude, um, I don't know yet.
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: I feel like we just kind of kind of I feel like right now it's a wait and see sort of thing.
- 18:57SPEAKER_03: It's it's it's really a new concept, this transfer portal buzz.
- 19:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I don't have a strong opinion about it yet.
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: I I will say to give the NIL portal credits, I NIL portal, I guess they really are connected anymore.
- 19:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they're one of the same.
- 19:13SPEAKER_01: But I to give it credit is it kind of keeps it fresh in a way.
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: Like it most most of the time you're looking for the same names whenever you're watching the sports.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: Um, but to have new guys to cheer for mixed in with the oldies, it's kind of intriguing in a way because you get to see new styles of ball in the court because everybody plays it a little differently.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: Um, so that part is kind of interesting to me.
- 19:39SPEAKER_01: And obviously, uh, as men, our gossip is this like this is our gossip recruiting, uh, transfers, uh drafting.
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: That is gossip to us, and this is kind of the the the the knee deep of it, you know.
- 19:53SPEAKER_01: So it's kind of intriguing to see the drama unfold from it.
- 19:57SPEAKER_01: Um but I don't have a strong opinion about it yet.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: My only my biggest worry about it is the lack of continuity that lower programs will be able to hold on to.
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: Like it's Cinderella runs, I feel like might be getting tougher to do because as soon as you have a strong season, other programs are gonna poach your boys, including your coach.
- 20:21SPEAKER_01: So, not that that changes too much, because obviously that's kind of a tail of all this time with coaches, especially especially.
- 20:27SPEAKER_01: But we'll have to for me, I know it's a boring answer, but it's a bit of a wait and see.
- 20:31SPEAKER_01: And to give it credit, the variety is kind of fun.
- 20:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, I can agree.
- 20:36SPEAKER_03: There's there's goods and bads that come with it.
- 20:38SPEAKER_03: It's obviously, I think a lot of kids get really bad advice when it comes to the transfer portal from uh you know, quote unquote agents in IL, you know, related stuff.
- 20:50SPEAKER_03: Um and it and it ends up, you know, really wrecking the kids' kind of career.
- 20:55SPEAKER_03: Uh, and it sucks.
- 20:56SPEAKER_03: So that part of it is no good, but there are parts of it that are fun, it makes it interesting.
- 21:02SPEAKER_03: Like you said, it keeps it fresh.
- 21:03SPEAKER_03: It always gives you, it gives first year programs or maybe a program that just had a bad season a real opportunity to turn it around like at an insane rate now.
- 21:14SPEAKER_03: I mean, if you hire the right guy and he attacks the transfer portal real quick, he can turn that team around in a year.
- 21:20SPEAKER_03: I mean, you you even saw what Grant McCassin did with our team this year.
- 21:23SPEAKER_03: I mean, he completely turned that thing around.
- 21:25SPEAKER_03: Um, but and he uh the transfer portal was a big part of that.
- 21:28SPEAKER_03: You know, Warren, Joe, Devin Cambridge, uh, you know, those guys are it's uh we had some really good additions.
- 21:35SPEAKER_03: So um let's talk about tech.
- 21:38SPEAKER_03: Who leaves?
- 21:39SPEAKER_03: Who's gonna not be a Texas Tech Red Raider come the 2024 25 basketball season?
- 21:44SPEAKER_03: Obviously, Warren Washington and Joe Tucson, those guys are out of eligibility.
- 21:48SPEAKER_03: They will not be Red Raiders next year, they will not be college basketball players next year because they have to go and get themselves a job.
- 21:55SPEAKER_03: Um, it's a tough, it's a tough scene.
- 21:58SPEAKER_03: How bummed out are you about that?
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: That those I'm bummed out.
- 22:02SPEAKER_03: I I really enjoyed what Joe Tucson brought to Texas Tech this year.
- 22:06SPEAKER_03: And yeah, dribble Joe.
- 22:08SPEAKER_03: When Warren was healthy, he was absolutely dynamite to watch.
- 22:12SPEAKER_03: I loved watching Warren when he was healthy.
- 22:14SPEAKER_03: Obviously, the end there was not good, but that's not his fault.
- 22:18SPEAKER_03: I mean, he tried to come back and he gave it a go, but ultimately it just it was a tough finish to the season for him.
- 22:25SPEAKER_03: But um, yeah, I'm gonna miss Joe.
- 22:27SPEAKER_03: Joe's a leader.
- 22:28SPEAKER_03: Joe's Joe's explosiveness, his uh, you know, he was a fireball, man.
- 22:33SPEAKER_03: Especially the last game.
- 22:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you could see he in that first half against DC State, he held it down on both sides of the floor.
- 22:41SPEAKER_03: He was absolutely electric.
- 22:42SPEAKER_03: And he was one of the few, and I'll get into like what we need to improve on for next year's team, but he was one of those dogs, dude.
- 22:50SPEAKER_03: Like, yeah, you need those guys on your team.
- 22:53SPEAKER_03: It they could be extremely talented and be a dog, or they could just be a contributor and be a dog, a hustle guy.
- 23:00SPEAKER_03: I mean, not a Brock Cunningham hustle guy flagrant, but a guy who's actually smart about it and provides winning plays for you no matter what, and the experience.
- 23:10SPEAKER_03: I mean, he was it was you know his fifth year, sixth year of college basketball.
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: So you can't beat that part of it.
- 23:15SPEAKER_01: No, no one percent.
- 23:17SPEAKER_03: It's gonna suck to lose those guys, but they are 100% gone out of eligibility.
- 23:21SPEAKER_03: You know, they're not gonna return.
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: So it'll be like stick a mustache on them.
- 23:26SPEAKER_03: Hey, if we get Mo Tucson.
- 23:28SPEAKER_02: I dude, I was gonna make the same joke.
- 23:31SPEAKER_03: Mo to Mo Croissant, Mo Croissant in here.
- 23:38SPEAKER_03: Come on back, Mo.
- 23:40SPEAKER_03: We'll take you.
- 23:41SPEAKER_03: Transfer from Texas Technical College.
- 23:44SPEAKER_03: I am 18.
- 23:47SPEAKER_03: I am 12.
- 23:50SPEAKER_03: All right, so the next couple guys are they have eligibility remaining, but I would not expect them uh to be Red Raiders.
- 23:59SPEAKER_03: Kyron Lindsey already entered his name in the transfer portal as of today.
- 24:03SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, that was a given.
- 24:05SPEAKER_03: He was not with the team for the final few weeks of the season.
- 24:08SPEAKER_03: Uh, some attitude issues with him, obviously did not vibe with the coaching staff all that well.
- 24:13SPEAKER_03: Um, and yeah, he's gone.
- 24:15SPEAKER_03: He's not gonna be at Texas Tech.
- 24:16SPEAKER_03: More like Byron.
- 24:19SPEAKER_03: There you go.
- 24:20SPEAKER_03: I've only seen that joke 70 times.
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm the original.
- 24:24SPEAKER_01: It was the first thing on this podcast right now.
- 24:28SPEAKER_03: You and you and Raider Ty.
- 24:30SPEAKER_03: You and Raider Ty were the originals.
- 24:33SPEAKER_03: Good Byron.
- 24:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 24:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 24:36SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, I I don't I don't have any worries about losing Kyron Lindsay.
- 24:41SPEAKER_03: He didn't contribute, he didn't contribute a lot this year.
- 24:44SPEAKER_03: And it's you know, if you're not gonna buy into the system, if you're not gonna buy into Grant McCastlen's team, then we don't want you.
- 24:50SPEAKER_03: So what's your sending?
- 24:52SPEAKER_03: You know, good luck at your next stop.
- 24:54SPEAKER_03: Um DeMarian Williams, another guy.
- 24:56SPEAKER_03: Stop the three.
- 24:58SPEAKER_03: DeMarion Williams, another guy who is not gonna return.
- 25:01SPEAKER_03: He has not officially entered his name in the portal yet, but um, he was also not with the team down the stretch uh at the end of the year, did not go to the tournament.
- 25:09SPEAKER_03: I don't think he was at the Big 12 tournament with the team.
- 25:12SPEAKER_03: So um clearly is just gearing up to enter the transfer portal and uh finish off his career elsewhere.
- 25:18SPEAKER_03: Again, contributed basically nothing his entire two years at Texas Tech, which was uh disappointing.
- 25:25SPEAKER_03: Uh, you can officially call the DeMarion Williams experiment a failed experience experiment coming in the last year of Mark Adams, uh, obviously not contributing last year.
- 25:37SPEAKER_03: Grant kept him on, uh, not sure why, because he didn't play at all this year.
- 25:41SPEAKER_03: And uh, you know, he's gonna he's gonna transfer out uh eventually.
- 25:45SPEAKER_01: He got that something, and that that something was nothing.
- 25:51SPEAKER_03: He got a little he got a little NIL money, is what I'll say.
- 25:53SPEAKER_01: He got a little must interview well.
- 25:56SPEAKER_01: He got the check super he used all the buzzwords like synergy, and I would compare Demarion Williams to a crypto bro.
- 26:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 26:10SPEAKER_03: Um, so yeah, again, hasn't officially entered, but he's probably going to.
- 26:15SPEAKER_03: Uh another couple guys that maybe some might surprise some people.
- 26:18SPEAKER_03: Uh, I'm not saying it's officially gonna happen.
- 26:20SPEAKER_03: It hasn't officially happened, but there's definitely rumors swirling of Kerwin Walton and Lamar Washington potentially testing the transfer portal.
- 26:30SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, uh it makes sense.
- 26:33SPEAKER_03: Why, but why does it make sense with Balton?
- 26:36SPEAKER_03: It makes sense with Kerwin because he's gonna get probably a pretty good NIL deal at another place due to his stats this year.
- 26:44SPEAKER_03: And I mean, if you're Texas Tech, like this guy's kind of a one-trick pony, not gonna lie to you.
- 26:50SPEAKER_03: Uh, he wasn't fantastic on the defensive end.
- 26:53SPEAKER_03: He especially wasn't fantastic on the hustle stats, you know, the rebounding and uh trying to keep guys off the boards, uh, didn't really contribute a ton on the offensive end outside of his shooting, but his shooting was elite.
- 27:06SPEAKER_03: And I'll give him that.
- 27:07SPEAKER_03: Kerwin was really good this year at his role, which was being a shooter, sharpshooter coming off screens, um, you know, and nailing it.
- 27:16SPEAKER_03: I think he shot over 50% per three this year.
- 27:18SPEAKER_03: That's an awesome stat.
- 27:20SPEAKER_03: Uh, and teams are gonna look at him in the portal and they're gonna pay him, they're gonna give him that payday.
- 27:25SPEAKER_03: And I'm not sure Texas Tech is going to offer him as much NIL as another school.
- 27:30SPEAKER_01: But has he seen your McDonald's McNuggets meme?
- 27:34SPEAKER_01: Like that stops if he leaves.
- 27:36SPEAKER_03: If he was more active on social media, maybe he'd stay.
- 27:40SPEAKER_01: Steven, you know what's kind of interesting as we talk about this in the way you're talking about, like, oh, he can go get a big time deal somewhere else.
- 27:46SPEAKER_01: It almost feels like we are talking about a professional sports organization concerned about their player budget, you know?
- 27:54SPEAKER_01: Like, and it's just it's it's just not a way that we've ever talked about college sports until now.
- 27:59SPEAKER_01: It's just weird.
- 28:00SPEAKER_01: It's like, oh, well, if he goes, sure, it's a loss on the shooting end, but that frees up a lot of cash to get a more complete player you're looking for, kind of way.
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: And it's just it's a it's just so weird to talk about college this way.
- 28:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's literally how you you have to think about it as free agency.
- 28:15SPEAKER_03: It is every year you are in free agency, every player is on a one-year contract, and that is how this works now.
- 28:23SPEAKER_03: That's how that's the state that we're in.
- 28:25SPEAKER_03: And a lot of people don't like that, and I don't necessarily like that, but uh, you know, you either live with the trend or or you really fall behind.
- 28:33SPEAKER_03: So Texas Tech has a really, really good NIL base right now for both football and basketball and many, many other sports.
- 28:41SPEAKER_03: So I, you know, if you're Texas Tech, you are staying with the times and trying to compete with the best of them, which is a good thing, but yeah, it all feels a little slimy because it kind of is.
- 28:52SPEAKER_01: And and Lubbock is famously a trendy town, so it's what we do.
- 28:57SPEAKER_01: Said it for years.
- 28:58SPEAKER_01: Cutting edge.
- 28:59unknown: Cutting edge.
- 29:00SPEAKER_03: Lubbock, Texas, baby.
- 29:02SPEAKER_03: Um, so yeah, I would just don't be surprised if Kerwin enters the portal, is what I'll say.
- 29:07SPEAKER_03: I I like again, I don't know officially.
- 29:10SPEAKER_03: I you know, we talk to some people, but it's not like no true.
- 29:14SPEAKER_03: Shoot our guy Kerwin a text and ask him what he's up to.
- 29:17SPEAKER_03: Um, but uh but yeah, it seems like it seems like Kerwin may enter the portal.
- 29:22SPEAKER_03: And Lamar Washington, just based on playtime, he didn't get he didn't get a lot of it.
- 29:27SPEAKER_03: He actually played a lot more under Mark Adams in year one.
- 29:31SPEAKER_03: Um, and then year two came around, he just really couldn't find a role.
- 29:34SPEAKER_03: It was kind of due to the team just being guard heavy.
- 29:37SPEAKER_03: I mean, we just had a lot of guards on this year's team, and Lamar couldn't really break in to the rotation.
- 29:42SPEAKER_03: And when he did break into the rotation, it was because we were limited on bigs and he almost had to play out of position there at the four of the three.
- 29:49SPEAKER_03: So I can see him personally just not wanting that same role and wanting to get playtime at a different spot.
- 29:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:57SPEAKER_01: Is that it?
- 29:58SPEAKER_01: Is that the only two you're thinking like for sure?
- 30:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think those are the ones that I would lean more than 50% right now are gonna leave the team that have eligibility remaining.
- 30:09SPEAKER_01: So that leaves that leaves five players going.
- 30:12SPEAKER_01: That doesn't sound like a whole lot.
- 30:14SPEAKER_01: Like that doesn't sound like an insurmountable, like you're you're looking at a step back sort of season next year.
- 30:20SPEAKER_03: Well, that's six, and I mean it is three of your starters.
- 30:23SPEAKER_01: No, no, I I can count.
- 30:25SPEAKER_03: No, you can't count.
- 30:26SPEAKER_02: I can't count.
- 30:27SPEAKER_03: You can't, it's a tough one.
- 30:29SPEAKER_03: I didn't want to I'm sorry, man.
- 30:31SPEAKER_03: I didn't want to call that out, but yeah.
- 30:32SPEAKER_02: Why'd you do that to me?
- 30:33SPEAKER_03: Kristen struggles with counting, it's been a lifelong issue.
- 30:37SPEAKER_03: We're we're having him see a therapist about it.
- 30:40SPEAKER_03: Uh, but no, that's three starters.
- 30:41SPEAKER_03: That's Warren, Joe, and Kerwin, potentially.
- 30:43SPEAKER_03: I mean, that's a lot of production that you're gonna have to replace there.
- 30:47SPEAKER_03: So uh yeah, it may be kind of minimal with the amount, but uh yeah, you're gonna have to replace a lot.
- 30:54SPEAKER_03: And you no longer, you no longer have bigs, you need some bigs.
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: So, well, I guess I'm wrong as hell.
- 31:01SPEAKER_01: So perhaps this is an issue.
- 31:04SPEAKER_01: So, but I I guess we can count on Grant making the right moves.
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: I mean, he did great in the portal this year, but yeah, obviously you want to see a step forward, and it kind of sucks to know that you're losing a crabble of production.
- 31:18SPEAKER_01: Then can you maintain that pace and improve on it?
- 31:21SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, you there's plenty of options in this portal.
- 31:24SPEAKER_03: Uh, and Texas Tech, like I mentioned earlier, is very well set on the NIL front.
- 31:30SPEAKER_03: So um, that should not be something that we're worried about.
- 31:34SPEAKER_03: There's gonna be guys, and also the off season is long.
- 31:38SPEAKER_03: Like we're getting we got Joe Tucson in July, we got Kevin O'Banner in July of the last couple of years.
- 31:45SPEAKER_03: So you're still thinking about the KO, huh?
- 31:47SPEAKER_03: I love KO.
- 31:49SPEAKER_03: I miss that guy so much.
- 31:51SPEAKER_03: Uh there's uh it people want stuff to happen immediately.
- 31:55SPEAKER_03: They saw uh one of the kids that actually was signed on to Texas Tech before he went through a medical thing last offseason and ended up going to Charlotte, has since again entered the transfer portal and already committed to Iowa State for next year.
- 32:10SPEAKER_03: Some people are looking at that guy and they're like, oh my god, we're falling behind.
- 32:13SPEAKER_03: Texas Tech's falling behind.
- 32:15SPEAKER_03: Iowa State already has a dude.
- 32:16SPEAKER_03: They're in the Sweet 16, they're so far ahead of us.
- 32:18SPEAKER_03: But it's like, guys, the offseason is long, and this staff is really gonna take a look at who they need to add and that fit Grant's system and that fit his style.
- 32:30SPEAKER_03: So, yeah, not every big name that's gonna enter the transfer portal is somebody that this team is gonna go after, but they're gonna try to get the right guys, and I think for the most part, Grant got his kind of right guys to be successful this year with Warren's and Joe Toussaint and Devin Cambridge and uh, you know, Chance McMillan and all those guys.
- 32:52SPEAKER_03: Darien Williams, who was probably the best transfer portal edition, uh, who I have failed to mention.
- 32:57SPEAKER_03: But no, I I I like this staff style, and just because stuff does not happen immediately does not mean that they won't happen.
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but I prefer to know that we're gonna be really good now.
- 33:09SPEAKER_01: I want that, I want that feeling now.
- 33:11SPEAKER_03: We all would, my friend.
- 33:13SPEAKER_03: We all would, but we don't get that sometimes.
- 33:16SPEAKER_03: Sometimes you gotta wait a little bit, you know.
- 33:19SPEAKER_01: Well, tell me where this portal is.
- 33:21SPEAKER_01: I'll go to I'll go keep a watch.
- 33:24SPEAKER_03: Go sit outside with your lawn chair, just watch this portal go.
- 33:29SPEAKER_03: Um, who's gonna stay for Texas Tech?
- 33:32SPEAKER_03: That's the big question right now.
- 33:34SPEAKER_03: Uh, the firm answer for 100% these people are gonna stay is nobody.
- 33:39SPEAKER_03: And I'm sorry to admit there's no firm 100 about Grant McCasslin.
- 33:45SPEAKER_03: Okay, Grant is gonna stay.
- 33:48SPEAKER_03: Not but not even 100%.
- 33:49SPEAKER_03: I'm like at a 98 right now because I don't know, who knows?
- 33:53SPEAKER_03: Somebody uh Kentucky could fire a Calpari and then go after Grant McCasslin.
- 33:57SPEAKER_03: Who knows?
- 33:58SPEAKER_03: No, I I say that, I'm kidding.
- 34:00SPEAKER_03: I think Grant McCastlin will be back next year for Texas Tech.
- 34:05SPEAKER_01: All right, so who are you at least hopeful?
- 34:07SPEAKER_01: Like, or at least who do you think there's a good chance they're coming back.
- 34:11SPEAKER_01: I'll give you my percentages here.
- 34:14SPEAKER_03: I think Darren I think Darren is coming back.
- 34:18SPEAKER_03: Two thirds.
- 34:20SPEAKER_03: That's one third?
- 34:22SPEAKER_03: That's pretty good.
- 34:22SPEAKER_03: That's all that's a fraction.
- 34:24SPEAKER_03: Uh I think Darien Williams is coming back.
- 34:27SPEAKER_03: I think it's like a 90% right now that Darien Williams is going to be a red writer next year.
- 34:31SPEAKER_03: And honestly, that's the dude that you need to keep the most.
- 34:34SPEAKER_03: He is still got a few years, two to three years, I think, of eligibility left here at Texas Tech.
- 34:41SPEAKER_03: If he wants it, you pay the man, you give him his NIL, you do whatever you need, you keep Darien Williams.
- 34:47SPEAKER_03: And I think he's really good for the system.
- 34:50SPEAKER_03: He's really a McCasslin type of guy, and he flourished this season, and he's only gonna get better.
- 34:55SPEAKER_03: So, yeah, Darien I would say is like a 90% chance.
- 35:00SPEAKER_03: That's way more than two-thirds.
- 35:02SPEAKER_03: That's way more than two-thirds, yes.
- 35:04SPEAKER_03: I'll give you a nine-tenths on that one.
- 35:06SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 35:07SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 35:08SPEAKER_03: Um, I also think Chance McMillan will be back.
- 35:10SPEAKER_03: He has already stated that he is coming back to Texas Tech.
- 35:14SPEAKER_03: I'm not taking that.
- 35:15SPEAKER_03: I I'm gonna always take what the player is.
- 35:17SPEAKER_01: Believe the man, Steven.
- 35:19SPEAKER_01: Believe the man.
- 35:20SPEAKER_03: Always take what the player says with a grain of salt right after their season ended because their energy and their emotions are high.
- 35:27SPEAKER_03: And then all of a sudden he gets a wad of cash from a school that is absolutely tampering, and then he goes off and leaves.
- 35:34SPEAKER_03: So again, I'm not gonna say 100% on any of these players are coming back to Texas Tech, but Chance McMillan, I think, has a very high chance.
- 35:43SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna say another 90% chance that we get chance back in the nine out of 10.
- 35:50SPEAKER_03: Another nine out of ten, baby.
- 35:51SPEAKER_03: You got it.
- 35:52SPEAKER_03: You're getting it, you're getting it.
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: 9 out of 10.
- 35:56SPEAKER_01: That can that fraction cannot be reduced.
- 35:59SPEAKER_03: My next one is uh my next one is pop.
- 36:03SPEAKER_03: Pop Isaac's, uh, I would put him at 75 right now.
- 36:07SPEAKER_03: Three-fourths for all of you mathematicians out there.
- 36:11SPEAKER_03: I think Pop comes back next year.
- 36:13SPEAKER_03: Not just because he said it in a quote, but because I think he and McCasslin really vibe.
- 36:20SPEAKER_03: I think they've developed a relationship that's strong enough for him to want to come back.
- 36:24SPEAKER_03: Now, Pop is going to get some offers this offseason.
- 36:28SPEAKER_03: He is going to get some blue blood programs, some big programs coming after him in the transfer portal, just like he had last offseason.
- 36:36SPEAKER_03: But I think ultimately he's going to choose to come back to be at Texas Tech.
- 36:40SPEAKER_03: And I am 100% great with that.
- 36:45SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, I mean, I feel like if if you're going to say there's a star on the program, it's Pop Isaacs.
- 36:51SPEAKER_01: And obviously, I think you want to keep your star just for, you know, momentum purposes, leadership purposes, um, and a guy, you know, you can work around.
- 36:58SPEAKER_01: So I think we'd all like to see pop back.
- 37:00SPEAKER_01: He had some awesome flashes, some clutch flashes, but also some uh fairly disappointed runs, obviously.
- 37:07SPEAKER_01: The last game being one of them.
- 37:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I mean the three for 16 performance in the NCA tournament is not gonna look good.
- 37:13SPEAKER_03: Uh, there's people already in our mentions and in um on social media saying, no, I don't even want pop back.
- 37:20SPEAKER_03: He's too inconsistent.
- 37:21SPEAKER_03: Uh yeah, yeah.
- 37:22SPEAKER_03: If you haven't seen it, yeah, it's absolutely going around.
- 37:25SPEAKER_03: Uh, and I just don't agree with those people.
- 37:27SPEAKER_03: So I would love to have uh a really, really talented scorer and leader on this team back, and a guy who's now had two full seasons in the Big 12, knows this conference, knows how to play.
- 37:40SPEAKER_03: I absolutely want Pop Isaacs back.
- 37:42SPEAKER_03: I know he's inconsistent.
- 37:43SPEAKER_03: He needs to get better at that, but um, you know, I'll take him.
- 37:46SPEAKER_03: Let's just not go back to the Bahamas.
- 37:50SPEAKER_03: No more out of the country.
- 37:51SPEAKER_03: How about that?
- 37:52SPEAKER_03: No more out of the house.
- 37:53SPEAKER_03: No more out of the country, no more Maui, no more Bahamas, no more shrimp cocktail.
- 37:58SPEAKER_03: No more anything.
- 38:00SPEAKER_03: Okay, no more anything.
- 38:01SPEAKER_03: We're gonna stay in the States, we're gonna stay out of trouble, and we're gonna have ourselves a good season next year.
- 38:06SPEAKER_03: Let's do that.
- 38:07SPEAKER_03: So good family fun for the police.
- 38:10SPEAKER_03: Good old family fun.
- 38:13SPEAKER_03: The next two, I'm gonna go 50-50 on.
- 38:16SPEAKER_03: And there are two backup bigs that had to take on bigger roles this year, one being Bob Jennings, the other being Emily Yalaho.
- 38:25SPEAKER_03: Um I think one of those guys is gonna stay.
- 38:28SPEAKER_03: I don't know which one it is, but I think with how we're gonna approach this portal and how I think we should approach this portal, you don't really keep either of these guys in your mind.
- 38:39SPEAKER_03: And you say, oh, we have Yalaho, or oh, we have Rob Jennings, you know, we can't go after somebody.
- 38:45SPEAKER_03: Like, F all that, man.
- 38:47SPEAKER_03: Both of those guys, I like that.
- 38:49SPEAKER_03: I think they've both took major strides this year, being thrown into a situation that they weren't quite prepared for.
- 38:55SPEAKER_03: And they kind of stepped up in a lot of different, you know, situations.
- 38:59SPEAKER_03: But you if you're Grandma Castlin and you're this staff, you do not say, oh, if I get this guy, Rob's gonna leave.
- 39:08SPEAKER_03: You know, you don't ever say that.
- 39:10SPEAKER_03: You go get that player.
- 39:12SPEAKER_03: If you think that big is going to be good for you, you go get that player, and then you worry about the consequences potentially later.
- 39:18SPEAKER_03: Really?
- 39:19SPEAKER_01: You don't you don't want to prioritize your missing gaps?
- 39:22SPEAKER_03: What do you mean?
- 39:24SPEAKER_03: This is a missing gap.
- 39:25SPEAKER_03: Our missing gap right now is a big guy.
- 39:27SPEAKER_01: Okay, all right.
- 39:28SPEAKER_03: And both of those guys play big.
- 39:30SPEAKER_03: I mean, they play four or five.
- 39:32SPEAKER_03: But if there's a four or five in the transfer portal right now that you think can be better, you go get them.
- 39:38SPEAKER_03: You don't worry about it.
- 39:39SPEAKER_03: That's it's it's a tough, it's a tough situation, but that's that's where we're at right now.
- 39:45SPEAKER_01: You you gave it a 50%.
- 39:46SPEAKER_01: What's that infraction?
- 39:49SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna stop with the fractions, all right?
- 39:53SPEAKER_03: 50% is 50%.
- 39:54SPEAKER_03: I think one of those guys stays as your backup big for next year.
- 39:58SPEAKER_03: I do like the strides that Rob took, but again, he's undersized.
- 40:02SPEAKER_03: He's 6'7 on a good day.
- 40:04SPEAKER_03: Uh, he his true position really is the four.
- 40:07SPEAKER_03: Um, and it I just don't know about him playing the five again.
- 40:11SPEAKER_03: You you don't want the young raw kid?
- 40:13SPEAKER_03: The young Emily?
- 40:15SPEAKER_01: Like right now.
- 40:17SPEAKER_03: I like the finish.
- 40:18SPEAKER_03: Listen, I love the fins.
- 40:20SPEAKER_03: Love them.
- 40:21SPEAKER_03: I would honestly, if you're asking me who I would rather have, it's a tough, it's tough.
- 40:28SPEAKER_03: Because Rob You keep saying Rob.
- 40:31SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 40:32SPEAKER_03: I mean Bob.
- 40:33SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry.
- 40:34SPEAKER_03: Uh I think Yallaho's got more potential.
- 40:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
- 40:39SPEAKER_03: I think he does.
- 40:40SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 40:41SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 40:41SPEAKER_03: I mean, right now, Rob's a better player.
- 40:43SPEAKER_03: Bob, sorry, Bob's the better player, but I think long term I'd rather have Yallaho on the team.
- 40:49SPEAKER_01: I would agree.
- 40:50SPEAKER_01: I mean, just from the young, and he's he's like what Grant's first recruit?
- 40:55unknown: Yeah.
- 40:56SPEAKER_01: So that's crazy, isn't it?
- 40:59SPEAKER_03: So keep him, keep him.
- 41:01SPEAKER_03: He's a Grant guy, keep him.
- 41:03SPEAKER_03: Um I would expect one of those guys to not be a Texas tech Red Raider and one of them to be.
- 41:09SPEAKER_03: So uh, but again, this stuff is very fluid.
- 41:12SPEAKER_03: We'll see what happens.
- 41:14SPEAKER_03: Uh, the last one that's kind of uh really a 50-50 for me is Devin Cambridge.
- 41:19SPEAKER_03: Um, he's got another year if he wants it.
- 41:22SPEAKER_03: He obviously tours ACL earlier this season.
- 41:26SPEAKER_03: And the two options for him and what we're what we're talking to people about is overseas to go pro or return to Texas Tech.
- 41:36SPEAKER_03: I don't think there's a reality where he enters the transfer portal and tries to play for another school.
- 41:41SPEAKER_03: I think he's really just weighing his pro opportunities right now and seeing what works best for him.
- 41:46SPEAKER_03: And honestly, for a guy that is an undersized four that relies a lot on his explosiveness and athleticism in his game to succeed, you know, you're coming back from a major knee injury.
- 42:00SPEAKER_03: How good are you going to return back to that player that you were before the knee injury?
- 42:05SPEAKER_03: And if your best option right now is to go overseas because that overseas team is offering you more money to go over there and a guaranteed contract instead of going back to college basketball and potentially just not performing well enough to get a pro opportunity in the future, you got to go pro, man.
- 42:23SPEAKER_03: Like that's my thoughts on it.
- 42:25SPEAKER_01: So, all right.
- 42:26SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 42:26SPEAKER_01: So you're you're you're pretty much encouraging the guy to get gone and go get paid.
- 42:31SPEAKER_03: I would not be upset if Devin Cambridge came back.
- 42:35SPEAKER_03: I want to state that here for the listeners.
- 42:38SPEAKER_03: I think he would be good for Texas Tech next year.
- 42:41SPEAKER_03: I think he's enough of a dog to really get back and you know become a successful player again.
- 42:47SPEAKER_03: I don't think one injury has ruined him.
- 42:49SPEAKER_03: But if you're just weighing your options right now and you're still dealing with a major injury, I mean, I if I were Devin Cambridge, I would go pro.
- 42:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 42:58SPEAKER_01: No, I mean, absolutely, you gotta get that guaranteed uh kickback.
- 43:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, uh that college basketball would all obviously be a gamble outside of you know getting an education and similar NIL money, of course.
- 43:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 43:10SPEAKER_01: And a second chance at going pro.
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: But yeah, no, I'm with you.
- 43:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so that's where we're at with the roster.
- 43:18SPEAKER_03: Um, we didn't mention our guy Jackie franchise.
- 43:21SPEAKER_03: Uh, he's still a walk-on, you know, potentially a walk-on next year.
- 43:24SPEAKER_03: We'll see.
- 43:25SPEAKER_03: Uh but let's let's hit on some priorities that we need to hit in the transfer portal for this basketball team.
- 43:33SPEAKER_03: First off, you need to go for two solid big guys.
- 43:36SPEAKER_03: I'm talking 6'10 and up uh because that was a major downfall for this team this year.
- 43:42SPEAKER_03: Was you had two guys really that were gonna be your bigs, and both of them got hurt.
- 43:47SPEAKER_03: One for the whole season and one for a major part at the end of the season, and your depth really showed at your bigs.
- 43:55SPEAKER_03: So, you know, you really got to go for two solid ones.
- 43:58SPEAKER_03: Um, I'd love It if we got some true big, you need true bigs, like you need at least one true big and one that is 610, 6'11 to potentially take over um or develop him as a prospect.
- 44:13SPEAKER_03: Maybe he's a freshman uh or going into his sophomore season, something like that.
- 44:18SPEAKER_03: That's fine, but you need to be bigger.
- 44:21SPEAKER_03: That's the main concern for Grandma Castlin, and that is high priority right now is getting bigger.
- 44:28SPEAKER_01: So that just flat out that that ahead of everything.
- 44:32SPEAKER_01: Don't even question, don't even think about anything else.
- 44:35SPEAKER_03: I mean, that's not no, that's not how the portal works.
- 44:38SPEAKER_03: That's not how these staffs work.
- 44:39SPEAKER_01: No, and you always put in a ticket for just that, and you see when it spits out.
- 44:44SPEAKER_03: No, that's how the portal works.
- 44:46SPEAKER_03: No, but that should be high priority for those guys.
- 44:48SPEAKER_03: The other one is just strength.
- 44:50SPEAKER_03: I put strength and length.
- 44:51SPEAKER_03: You like that?
- 44:52SPEAKER_03: Uh little high-energy dogs.
- 44:56SPEAKER_03: Joe Tucson.
- 44:57SPEAKER_03: That's what we need.
- 44:58SPEAKER_03: He didn't have the length, but he had the strength and the dog mentality that you need.
- 45:02SPEAKER_03: Uh, think like Marcus Sanosilva or like Odiace or Deshaun Corpru.
- 45:08SPEAKER_03: Like, think those types of guys.
- 45:10SPEAKER_03: The the dudes that'll just grind in their strong, you know, does do not care who they're playing.
- 45:17SPEAKER_03: Mentally, they're gonna play the same exact way every single night.
- 45:20SPEAKER_03: That was what Joe did.
- 45:21SPEAKER_03: And so I need more of those at every position.
- 45:24SPEAKER_03: Get them at every position.
- 45:26SPEAKER_01: That was like a Texas Tech player, too.
- 45:28SPEAKER_01: That is our archetype, you know.
- 45:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like that's what I like it.
- 45:33SPEAKER_03: I like it.
- 45:34SPEAKER_03: Look at you using big words.
- 45:36SPEAKER_03: Proud of you.
- 45:36SPEAKER_03: Um look at you.
- 45:39SPEAKER_03: And then you need uh you need shooters.
- 45:41SPEAKER_03: You need shooters.
- 45:42SPEAKER_03: Uh Pop can only do so much.
- 45:44SPEAKER_03: Kerwin was a big part of this team and and really led to some good basketball for you.
- 45:48SPEAKER_03: But if you just had that danger on the wing, uh some of your guards, uh, you need some shooting, you need some ball handling.
- 45:55SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, these are all priorities.
- 45:57SPEAKER_01: So what about really good players?
- 46:00SPEAKER_01: Is that on the list?
- 46:01SPEAKER_01: It's on the list.
- 46:02SPEAKER_03: I think it it's kind of one and the same with what I just said.
- 46:05SPEAKER_01: All right, cool.
- 46:05SPEAKER_01: I just wanted to make sure we didn't miss that.
- 46:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, we didn't miss it.
- 46:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, get some good players.
- 46:10SPEAKER_03: And don't like, I think people get too into the names.
- 46:16SPEAKER_03: You know, they'll see a name that pops into the transfer portal, and like the reporters will be like, oh, this is the guy.
- 46:23SPEAKER_03: This is a top five guy in the portal.
- 46:25SPEAKER_03: You need to get him.
- 46:26SPEAKER_03: That's not always the case, man.
- 46:28SPEAKER_03: Like, there were plenty of those top five guys in the transfer portal that teams got this year that didn't end up being much because they weren't fit for the system, they weren't right for the team.
- 46:39SPEAKER_03: And Grant McCasslin has a specific type of player that he wants in his program.
- 46:44SPEAKER_03: So if we don't have our name in the top guys list, that's not always a bad thing.
- 46:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for sure.
- 46:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I'd rather get what we need rather than be flashy.
- 46:53SPEAKER_01: I mean, Grant McCastlin does not seem like a flashy dude at all.
- 46:57SPEAKER_01: I I just I think he's just more of what do we need to win?
- 47:00SPEAKER_01: Let's just do that.
- 47:00SPEAKER_01: Like he yeah, he wasn't a flashy hire, and I don't think he's gonna do flashy things.
- 47:05SPEAKER_03: No, he wants to win, he wants to get the right guys that are gonna buy into a winning program.
- 47:09SPEAKER_03: So I like what he's doing, and I'm I'm cool with it.
- 47:12SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm fine with being patient.
- 47:14SPEAKER_01: All right, do you feel better now?
- 47:16SPEAKER_03: I do, I feel a little better.
- 47:18SPEAKER_01: Was that like a little therapeutic?
- 47:20SPEAKER_03: Successful first season for Grandma Castlin.
- 47:23SPEAKER_01: All right, sir.
- 47:26SPEAKER_03: I said it.
- 47:27SPEAKER_03: I said it as a first, it was a successful first season.
- 47:30SPEAKER_03: Um all right, man.
- 47:32SPEAKER_03: Anything else?
- 47:33SPEAKER_03: Basketball.
- 47:34SPEAKER_01: That was like an hour.
- 47:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that was a lot.
- 47:37SPEAKER_03: It was a lot.
- 47:38SPEAKER_01: Every time we get on this podcast, it's like I needed this.
- 47:41SPEAKER_03: I needed this.
- 47:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know you did.
- 47:43SPEAKER_01: I I know you need this release, otherwise you're gonna, you're gonna, you're gonna I'm gonna go off the deep end.
- 47:52SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna start breaking shit.
- 47:56SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna go find the biggest stick outback and break it, baby.
- 48:02SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be done.
- 48:05SPEAKER_03: Spring football started last week.
- 48:07SPEAKER_03: Joey Maguire and Co.
- 48:09SPEAKER_03: are back.
- 48:10SPEAKER_01: Don't don't give me hope.
- 48:11SPEAKER_02: Don't I am still reeling from last season?
- 48:18SPEAKER_02: So you're not drinking the Kool-Aid yet?
- 48:20SPEAKER_01: Of course I'm drinking the Kool-Aid, Steve.
- 48:23SPEAKER_01: Get out of here, dude.
- 48:24SPEAKER_01: I can't wait for the football season to start.
- 48:26SPEAKER_02: You you figured me out.
- 48:28SPEAKER_02: You got me.
- 48:30SPEAKER_03: Um, not to not to just, you know, I brought you up and not to bring you down.
- 48:36SPEAKER_03: We still have five months until the first game.
- 48:39SPEAKER_03: Is that long?
- 48:40SPEAKER_03: It's a while.
- 48:41SPEAKER_03: That's a five months.
- 48:43SPEAKER_03: Five months is a long time of just baseball.
- 48:46SPEAKER_01: It really is, dude.
- 48:47SPEAKER_01: And baseball is kind of making us question life decisions right now.
- 48:52SPEAKER_01: I mean, they did they did just win on the road against BYU and put the smack down on the Jacks, in-state rival Stephen F.
- 49:03SPEAKER_01: Austin.
- 49:04SPEAKER_01: Um Nacadochis and Lubbock just don't mix, man.
- 49:08SPEAKER_01: That's those are two towns.
- 49:10SPEAKER_01: You put them together.
- 49:11SPEAKER_01: It's like oil and water, dude, at the end of the day, you know.
- 49:14SPEAKER_01: Um, and here we got UCF coming up.
- 49:16SPEAKER_01: And you know, UCF is being kind of frisky.
- 49:19SPEAKER_01: So we got to match ahead of us, but again, kind of making us question things.
- 49:23SPEAKER_01: So there's your baseball rundown.
- 49:27SPEAKER_03: Our talk on baseball is that they played again.
- 49:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, well, listen, spring football's here.
- 49:38SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 49:39SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm drinking the Kool-Aid.
- 49:41SPEAKER_03: I don't care.
- 49:41SPEAKER_03: I I'm gonna get hurt again.
- 49:43SPEAKER_03: I'm ready, I'm ready to get hurt again because Joey McGuire is in front of a camera and he fires up everybody.
- 49:49SPEAKER_03: So, you know, am I gonna be a little more level-headed this year?
- 49:53SPEAKER_03: Probably not, but I'm gonna sure try.
- 49:56SPEAKER_01: What what is our what is like the football slogan right now?
- 49:59SPEAKER_01: You know how every like every tenure kind of has a bit of a slogan, you know, with with like with Kingsbury, it was like fearless.
- 50:06SPEAKER_03: I'm cool with no slogans, I'm cool with no hashtag.
- 50:09SPEAKER_03: I'm cool with no we us are no I just I'm cool with that.
- 50:13SPEAKER_01: I I just mean that I have a great pitch.
- 50:16SPEAKER_01: What's your pitch?
- 50:18SPEAKER_01: Text tech football.
- 50:19SPEAKER_01: Are you ready to hurt again?
- 50:21SPEAKER_01: Question mark.
- 50:22SPEAKER_01: Like, that's perfect, dude.
- 50:24SPEAKER_01: Signed, sealed, and they can play it off.
- 50:26SPEAKER_01: Oh, we mean the other team.
- 50:27SPEAKER_01: And we're like, oh, okay, yeah.
- 50:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 50:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's it.
- 50:33SPEAKER_03: No, I mean, they had they actually asked Joey McGuire about it in his like kickoff press conference for spring football.
- 50:40SPEAKER_03: Like, you know, he brought it up.
- 50:42SPEAKER_03: He was like, I know guys are saying, you know, we were hyped up last year, had a poor season, but I'm drinking the Kool-Aid because I believe in this team.
- 50:50SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, okay, Joey, what the hell?
- 50:52SPEAKER_03: You got me.
- 50:53SPEAKER_01: You saw the bitch.
- 50:54SPEAKER_01: I'm in.
- 50:56SPEAKER_03: I'm so in.
- 50:57SPEAKER_01: Um coach says his team's gonna be good.
- 51:01SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 51:02SPEAKER_01: He did it again.
- 51:04SPEAKER_02: I have to keep doing it.
- 51:08SPEAKER_01: Man whose job depends on it says he's gonna be good at job.
- 51:13SPEAKER_03: He's uh he's more though.
- 51:15SPEAKER_03: He's so much more if you know it.
- 51:17SPEAKER_01: Like I we love Jillian McGuire.
- 51:19SPEAKER_03: He will fire you up no matter.
- 51:22SPEAKER_03: We could be 0-7, and he's gonna try to fire you up.
- 51:26SPEAKER_03: Now, it's a lot easier to buy into in the offseason when you have a whole you know few months ahead before you can.
- 51:31SPEAKER_03: You can just daydream inputs and good things are happening.
- 51:35SPEAKER_03: But hey man, I mean, you got a new team, you got a fully switched up receiver room, you got uh uh uh a bunch of quarterbacks coming in.
- 51:45SPEAKER_03: Um I I'm excited.
- 51:47SPEAKER_03: I'm excited for the for football season.
- 51:49SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, it's not even just the new receiving core and uh, you know, or you know, new players and all that, dude.
- 51:54SPEAKER_01: You're looking down the barrel of a new era for Texas Tech football for the Big 12.
- 51:59SPEAKER_01: So now is the time to make a statement going forward.
- 52:03SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 52:04SPEAKER_03: No, you said it right.
- 52:05SPEAKER_03: You said it right.
- 52:06SPEAKER_03: Um, two guys that are gonna be pieces for you next year are not playing spring ball.
- 52:11SPEAKER_03: That is Jalen Conyers, the Arizona State transfer, and uh Mike the Hudson both are not gonna be a part of Springball dealing with injuries that they suffered.
- 52:20SPEAKER_03: Uh burns.
- 52:21SPEAKER_03: So yeah, not great.
- 52:24SPEAKER_03: Now, not not great, but Joey McGuire did say that they would be back by summer, which is a good thing, gives them enough time to ramp up before fall.
- 52:33SPEAKER_03: So uh not what you shouldn't be too worried about those guys right now.
- 52:36SPEAKER_03: Um, and you got a lot of returners and linebacker.
- 52:39SPEAKER_03: I I'm excited.
- 52:40SPEAKER_01: A good way to look at that is summer in Texas starts really early.
- 52:44SPEAKER_01: So, you know, it's it's hot as hell.
- 52:47SPEAKER_01: What next month?
- 52:49SPEAKER_01: So let's we that's that's what he's talking about, right?
- 52:53unknown: Sure.
- 52:54SPEAKER_03: Whatever your whatever your heart desires.
- 52:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 52:57SPEAKER_03: Um Baron is he said he feels good.
- 52:59SPEAKER_03: He said he's back to 100%.
- 53:01SPEAKER_03: This is according to him.
- 53:03SPEAKER_03: So take that with a grain of salt.
- 53:05SPEAKER_03: Dude, it's been a long time.
- 53:07SPEAKER_03: It yeah, but like it takes some time to let injuries heal, okay?
- 53:11SPEAKER_03: And he was dealing with a few of them last year.
- 53:12SPEAKER_03: It was an angle, it was keys on it, walk it off.
- 53:17SPEAKER_03: You'll be all right, Baron.
- 53:19SPEAKER_03: Um, he's QB1.
- 53:21SPEAKER_03: Hey, he's ready.
- 53:22SPEAKER_03: I'm ready.
- 53:22SPEAKER_03: I'm ready to see Baron Morton.
- 53:25SPEAKER_03: I'm ready to see Baron Morton QB one.
- 53:27SPEAKER_03: I'm ready.
- 53:28SPEAKER_01: When was the last time we had no controversy?
- 53:31SPEAKER_01: Last year.
- 53:33SPEAKER_01: What you didn't there wasn't like some discussion that between Chuck and Morton.
- 53:37SPEAKER_03: No, he named Tyler Shuck the starting quarterback in like June last year.
- 53:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, there was no competition.
- 53:43SPEAKER_03: And then, but of course, we dealt with injuries because of course there was the fan competition of saying it's me barren.
- 53:49SPEAKER_03: Now, what I'm excited about is actually the backup quarterback competition because we got some real dudes here that are vying for the backup QB, one of which Jake Strong, who was the third string last year going into his sophomore season at Texas Tech.
- 54:05SPEAKER_03: Well, I guess his redshirt freshman season.
- 54:07SPEAKER_03: I think he could still redshirt because he didn't play in four games last year.
- 54:10SPEAKER_03: So that's good.
- 54:11SPEAKER_03: But we brought in a transfer, Cameron Brown, who's kind of a dual thread guy, can run, uh, can pass.
- 54:18SPEAKER_03: He came from, I don't know if it was division two.
- 54:20SPEAKER_03: Community college, right?
- 54:20SPEAKER_03: Or was it community college?
- 54:22SPEAKER_03: It might have been, but he's coming in.
- 54:24SPEAKER_03: And then you got the guy, the true freshman, Will Hammond, who we're all kind of excited about.
- 54:30SPEAKER_03: Um, and all three of those guys are gonna be fighting for the backup QB spot.
- 54:33SPEAKER_03: So we'll see.
- 54:35SPEAKER_01: So are do you do you imagine redshirts being tossed out once those things fall into place?
- 54:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, you got a red shirt, probably Hammond, I imagine.
- 54:43SPEAKER_03: I don't know if he's gonna come in right away and be a true freshman and just kick butt.
- 54:48SPEAKER_03: But yeah, yeah, you know, I don't know.
- 54:50SPEAKER_03: We'll see.
- 54:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, I probably not, right?
- 54:53SPEAKER_01: You you gotta assume that Hammond's gonna get the red shirt with the especially with the transfer that happens, thinking that that transfer is kind of a placeholder for Hammond, you know, kind of buying him a year.
- 55:03SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 55:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I think a lot of people are ruling out Jake Strong.
- 55:07SPEAKER_03: Uh, granted, last year's play was not great when he was in, but also he was a true freshman.
- 55:12SPEAKER_03: He's a three-star.
- 55:14SPEAKER_03: Uh, who's to say he's not developed under Zach Kitley in a whole offseason at Texas Tech?
- 55:19SPEAKER_03: So I'm not ruling out Jake Strong being awesome, you know.
- 55:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, for sure.
- 55:22SPEAKER_03: He very well could develop into a nice quarterback.
- 55:25SPEAKER_03: So, and then Cameron Brown, I think, is your wild card here.
- 55:27SPEAKER_03: You brought him in.
- 55:28SPEAKER_03: He he put up some crazy numbers at a at a lower level of football last year, but he's coming in and he's kind of uh he's the one who could surprise some people.
- 55:38SPEAKER_03: So it's just gonna be a fun, uh, fun race to watch.
- 55:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 55:41SPEAKER_01: I mean, but it is nice having a QB1 set in stone and one that should be a freaking stud.
- 55:48SPEAKER_03: So yeah, very excited about uh the future of Will Hammond, but also excited about a healthy Baron Morton lean.
- 55:56SPEAKER_01: Me too, dude.
- 55:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, now it's what fourth year in the program?
- 56:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was about to say, like, it feels like this has been a long time coming.
- 56:04SPEAKER_01: Like, he's been the chosen one, like the prophecy has been foretold for a few seasons now.
- 56:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and now it's time for him to like kind of come in and slay the dragon already, you know.
- 56:14SPEAKER_03: Fourth year in the program, third with the current head coach, third with the current offensive coordinator.
- 56:22SPEAKER_03: Like, this is gonna be the year that you got to show some stuff, and I'm excited to see what he brings to the table.
- 56:26SPEAKER_03: So he will.
- 56:28SPEAKER_03: Um anything else, spring football related.
- 56:31SPEAKER_01: Uh, yes.
- 56:32SPEAKER_01: Um, so this coming Wednesday, I believe, um, the Big 12 is gonna host a pro day, like conference-wide pro day.
- 56:43SPEAKER_01: Apparently, the tradition has been schools will host their own and scouts can come out and they'll have to pick and choose where they go.
- 56:51SPEAKER_01: But the Big 12 is gonna be the first to make it easy on the scouts in hosting just one big one for every team.
- 56:58SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be uh in Frisco at the star.
- 57:01SPEAKER_01: So, initial thoughts.
- 57:04SPEAKER_03: Um it's a good thing.
- 57:07SPEAKER_03: It's a good thing.
- 57:07SPEAKER_03: It's cool, it's innovative, it's a new idea, which is what Brett Yormark has shown that he brings as commissioner of the Big 12.
- 57:14SPEAKER_03: This is gonna be for late round picks in the NFL, it's gonna be for fourth rounder, fifth rounder, sixth, seventh round guys um to show more of their stuff.
- 57:24SPEAKER_03: I mean, guys that weren't invited to the NFL combine, so they're getting their shot here.
- 57:29SPEAKER_03: And it puts a spotlight on them.
- 57:30SPEAKER_03: I'm sure it'll be televised in some way.
- 57:33SPEAKER_03: So it's a good thing.
- 57:34SPEAKER_01: No, I think it's yeah, I think it's a really good thing.
- 57:36SPEAKER_01: I think any way you can elevate uh Big 12 players into the next level is a positive for every program in the conference.
- 57:43SPEAKER_01: Um, because and I I really see this being like a uniquely Big 12 thing for now, because um, whenever we look at the other power conferences like um uh uh the big the bit the Big Ten, the SC, and even the ACC, what good do do the top dogs of those conferences have in sharing that kind of day with their lowly peers?
- 58:08SPEAKER_01: You know, like what is what does Clemson get out of sharing a day with Wake Forest or Boston College?
- 58:14SPEAKER_01: What does Alabama get with sharing a day with Vanderbilt?
- 58:17SPEAKER_01: You know, what is what does Ohio State get out of sharing a day with Rutgers?
- 58:21SPEAKER_01: Um, since the Big 12 is now truly an insanely even prestige-wise, you know, or reputation-wise conference, like I feel like this is really gonna be a good benefit for all those players uh for you know a last-minute shove into the NFL.
- 58:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, it gives those guys another opportunity to showcase their talents, which is a good thing.
- 58:42SPEAKER_03: I mean, you you could take a lot of these guys at the Big 12, they would have like the senior bowl, or they would have, you know, some sort of end-of-year competition that they get invited to or camp that they get invited to to further showcase their talent, which is uh this is another one of those.
- 58:58SPEAKER_03: And it's great.
- 58:59SPEAKER_03: Uh, it it might show it might help for like a guy like Rabbit, who you know is is gonna be drafted this year, whether it's you know, third round or seventh round, we're not really sure yet.
- 59:11SPEAKER_03: I think he's being projected like third, fourth, fifth round, but it it gives that guy an opportunity to really show what he's made of.
- 59:19SPEAKER_03: And the scouts that you know have to these NFL scouts trying to look at 128 FPS teams is just a really hard thing to do.
- 59:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so they rely on these sort of combines and extra um sort of showcases to look at their prospects, which is it's a good thing, it's a it's a cool, innovative idea.
- 59:40SPEAKER_01: Hats off to Brett Yormark, he's a dog.
- 59:42SPEAKER_01: Thank you for all you do, sir.
- 59:44SPEAKER_01: Keep it up, keep it up, buddy.
- 59:46SPEAKER_01: Um, all right.
- 59:48SPEAKER_01: What else you got?
- 59:50SPEAKER_01: Dog, that's it.
- 59:51SPEAKER_01: Um, we last episode we we just kind of lit it on fire.
- 59:55SPEAKER_01: There was some extra goodies in there.
- 59:56SPEAKER_01: And I just want the listeners to know that it was the best episode we've ever recorded.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_01: Um, nothing will ever top it.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_01: And unfortunately, it's only downhill from here.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, sorry guys.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_03: Uh, last week will be probably what third, fourth lost episode that we've had in our uh our time at Telic and Tech.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_01: Which is weird because we do this in like really high-tech studios.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_01: With really insane equipment.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_03: Crazy that we lose, you know, we lose these recordings or end up recording something wrong with uh with an Amazon mic and garage band.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_03: It's crazy.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_03: On a laptop that doesn't even work.
- 1:00:34unknown: Shh.
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_03: The people don't know that while we record this.
- 1:00:39SPEAKER_03: This is an audio medium, all right.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_03: They don't know this.
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_01: All right, song of the week.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_01: Let's go.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_03: It keeps us humble.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_03: All right, you go first.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_03: You're you're first with Song of the Week.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_02: Fine.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_02: All right, Steven.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_02: I am gonna be obnoxious as hell.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_02: Another cover.
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_01: Yes! Another cover, baby.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_01: So Aaron Watson.
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_01: It wasn't, I know it hasn't been that long since I I've done an Aaron Watson song, and I know that he's not exactly a star in the Texas countries uh scene anymore, but last year he released an album where every single song is a duet with a a female singer, and he's covering exclusively female artists.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_01: It's a pretty cool album.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_01: So, you know, you're hearing a guy and girl singing rather than just one female.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_01: Um, but this one's a lady gaga song.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_01: So a poetry version of a lady gaga song, and that song is A Million Reasons, and it's with Aaron Watson and Morgan Miles, and I I I I think the song translates perfectly into country music.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_01: I mean, I feel that way about a lot of really good songs, but this it does it really well.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_01: So A million reasons, Aaron Watson and Morgan Miles.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_07: I've got a hundred million reasons to walk away.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_07: Maybe I just need one good one to stay.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_03: Very nice.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_03: You did do uh no, was that Cody Johnson, the nine to five?
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_03: No, that was Aaron Watson.
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_01: That was a single that pre- that precursed the album.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_01: So I know I'm kind of double dipping here, but no, that's fine.
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_01: I gotta, I gotta, I gotta dish them both out.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm interested.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_03: You know, Lady Gaga song with Aaron Watson.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_03: All right, we'll we'll we'll give it a listen there.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_01: Give it a try.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_01: What about you, sir?
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_03: My song of the week is I don't know, it's how you look at it.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_03: Uh, our basketball team decided to mail it in and one, two, three, cancun this thing.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_03: So my song of the week is gonna be Mexico by Jimmy Buffett.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_03: Um my god, because the boys, the boys got an early vacation, and that's it's upsetting to most of us, but hey, enjoy the sun, enjoy the off season, everybody.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_03: Summer's right around the corner.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_03: Throw on some Mexico by Jimmy Buffett.
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_05: Sun so hot, I forgot.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_01: Pour one out, first of all, for the recently late great Jimmy Buffett.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_01: Um and that's originally a James Taylor song, I believe.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_01: So an audio that's two covers for the song of the Look at that.
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_01: But I do really love the Jimmy version.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_03: Always, always.
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_03: It's uh I was listening, it came on uh came on the uh the playlist today, and I was like, okay, this is it.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_03: I'm feeling some vibes here.
- 1:03:33SPEAKER_03: It's it's getting a little warmer over here.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_03: I think again in the 80s, so we're excited.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_01: The river beckons, you know.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_01: Like I see myself on a tube very soon.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_03: Now that I'm here, now that I'm back in San Antonio, I'm ready to tube.
- 1:03:51SPEAKER_03: It's happening soon.
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_03: I I want to tube tomorrow.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_03: I would take off work in tube.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_03: All I want to do is tube.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_01: Well, with your boy moving down there very soon, it we shall happen this summer.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_01: Book it.
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_01: Book it.
- 1:04:05SPEAKER_03: We're excited.
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_03: Summer's right around the corner, everybody.
- 1:04:07SPEAKER_03: Get excited.
