- 0:04Welcome to inspiration and transformation from the banks of the Gunga with Sadvi Bagwati Saraswati,

- 0:23vocational training, upliftment and empowerment programs to women and children. Sadvi is also
- 0:29Secretary General of the global Interfaith Wasash Alliance and director of the world famous International
- 0:35Yoga Festival. Joined the musings of an American Sanyasi as Sadvi shares the wisdom
- 0:40and teachings of her Guru, His Holiness Pujiaswami Chintenant Saraswatiji, Welcome everyone to
- 0:51inspiration and transformation from the holy banks of the Sacred Gunga River in the land
- 1:02of Rishikesh, India. What happens when perfectionism leads to such disturbance inside that
- 1:11you end up quitting? Perfectionism is actually a defense mechanism. We yearn for
- 1:32perfectionism, we learn for perfection. Rather, we learn for perfection because inside
- 1:38of us we feel lacking in some way and so that constant, constant drive
- 1:47that everything has to be perfect. Everything I do has to be perfect,
- 1:52everything everyone else does around me for me has to be perfect. This is
- 1:57actually a defense mechanism keeping me from having to sit in my own humanity,
- 2:07because the truth is the only thing that's perfect is God. So on the
- 2:14core level, we're all perfect, like every flower is perfect, every tree
- 2:20is perfect. Everything in creation is perfect at the car as our attachment to
- 2:36the body, to the story, to the role, to my identification,
- 2:40this false identification as my body, as my career, as my role,
- 2:47as my bank account, as my name, and fame, popularity whatever,
- 2:53as that grows, well, I want it all to be perfect because striving
- 3:00for that perfection keeps me from having to sit in the awareness of my own
- 3:10humanity, of that sense inside me which most of us have on some level
- 3:17or another that I'm not quite good enough, not quite beautiful enough, not
- 3:23quite smart enough, not quite successful enough, not quite popular enough. And
- 3:30so if I can just make everything perfect, then I don't have to look
- 3:38at that inside of me. So I'm all for sincerity. We should do
- 3:46our best. But perfectionism actually is a virus. It does lead to disturbance.
- 3:54It does lead to suffering, because almost nothing in life can't not be
- 4:05improved upon, right, I mean, the only things really that could be
- 4:09quote unquote perfect would be things that are like solutions to math problems, where
- 4:14there actually is only one absolute solution. Otherwise, you have a beautiful garden,
- 4:19it's gorgeous. Could you improve? Of course, you're a beautiful singer.
- 4:27You're amazing. Is somebody out there better than you are? Of course?
- 4:34You're baking a cake, it's wonderful. Is it the best cake ever
- 4:41baked? Does it have absolutely exactly the perfect blend of sugar to this to
- 4:49that? Then probably not? But does it matter? We give up our
- 5:00joy and our peace in this unfulfillable craving for perfection that will really never come
- 5:13unless you're solving a math problem instead of that, as far as who you
- 5:20are, as far as your spiritual practice, realize you're already perfect because you're
- 5:28divine your consciousness. What is not perfect about a soul? What is not
- 5:36perfect about consciousness? There's no where to improve that which we're working on our
- 5:54human existence a skill, we have a task, we're doing, a job,
- 5:58we're doing some ask respect of our emotions. Well, it's great,
- 6:02do your best, learn as much as you can strive. This is what
- 6:09Bugwan Krishna tells us in the bug of Aguita. Stand up, do it
- 6:15to the very best of your ability. But you don't have any control over
- 6:21that outcome. And as far as you're in your humanness, you're never going
- 6:30to be perfect. And so in our humanness we have to work on letting
- 6:39go of enjoying the journey, the work, striving, doing our best,
- 6:46fulfilling our highest potential than raising the bar going even higher. Why not keep
- 6:57learning, keep improving? Why not? It's beautiful, But never ever ever
- 7:04hold perfection as the goal A You'll never get there be it's going to constantly
- 7:14disturb you. And see if you find that you are a serial perfectionist,
- 7:21it means there's probably some stuff inside you need to look at. Can you
- 7:28exhale into your humanity? Here I am and yeah, I get angry sometimes
- 7:38Here I am can't carry a tune. Here I am you know, good
- 7:49at some things, not good at other things, touched by some things,
- 7:54not touched by other things. Here we all are in our humanity, and
- 7:58it's beautiful. Like any flower garden or fruit garden, different types of fruit,
- 8:07even within the same species of fruit, different sizes, some are juicy
- 8:11or some are less juicee It's part of the package. But find within you
- 8:26that perfect vine, because that's the core of who you are. It's already
- 8:31perfect, regardless of your bank account, regardless of your career, regardless of
- 8:37your physical body, regardless of your followers on Facebook or your relationships or anything
- 8:46anchor into that. And then enjoy your humanity. Do your best at the
- 8:54things you're good at, learn to do things that you're not so good at,
- 9:00but give up the whole idea of perfection. The only thing you should
- 9:03try to be perfect about is your sincerity. If you can't do it sincerely,
- 9:09don't do it at all. Be perfect in your sincerity that whatever you're
- 9:16doing, you're giving it. You're all. Bakito is just in God's hands.

- 10:39Brought to you by RAIN and this station. Welcome back to inspiration and
- 10:46transformation. I'm so glad to have you all back here with me. So
- 10:54there's two pieces and they are equally important. Number one, we are not
- 11:07separate from the world. There's not world. And then me we are part
- 11:16of the world. We are in fact creating the world. Each of us
- 11:24is an active co creator of the world. And what that means is that
- 11:31when that world is in trouble, we need to access our tools, our
- 11:41resources, our energy, our abilities to actually help solve the problems in the
- 11:54world. The highest spiritual goal is not how can I coexist in peace detached
- 12:05from our world which is falling apart. That is not the highest teaching.
- 12:13If you look at our our scriptures, take the bag of a Gita spoken
- 12:22on the battlefield of the war of Take the Ramayan, Take so many of
- 12:28the poor danas. The stories. There are stories for the most part of
- 12:37divine incarnations doing battle with demons and killing them. Whether it's a specific demon,
- 12:58whether it's simply those who have gotten swept up in the demonic forces.
- 13:09You could say, of ignorance, of greed, of lust. So,
- 13:16whether it's an actual assorda daksha, whether it's Doriada in his in his ignorance,
- 13:33in his greed, in his ega, what you've got is divine incarnations
- 13:46actively engaged personally as well as through inspiring others. Right, Baguan Krishna inspires
- 14:00Argune in the pond this, but guan Ram gets an entire army of the
- 14:07animal kingdom to join him in this fight. None of them are saying,
- 14:16Oh, don't worry, sit this one out, it's fine. Yes,
- 14:22let the demonic energies. Let the dark energies just win over killing people and
- 14:30bringing violence and adharma to the land. Now the teaching is always stand up,
- 14:41fight this, bring back light to the darkness, bring back dharma to
- 14:50adharma. And so when the problems of the world are there and they impact
- 14:56us and we feel sad, we feel angry, those are catalysts to action.
- 15:09Those are very different from being angry because someone you know was rude to
- 15:16me in our board meeting and made me look really stupid in front of the
- 15:18boss, Or angry because someone posted a nasty comment, you know, and
- 15:24tweeted something obnoxious about me, Or angry because you know, the person driving
- 15:33in front of me was so slow that I was late for the airport and
- 15:35missed my flight. The anger that we feel about poverty in the world,
- 15:45about injustice in the world, about the destruction of our planet Earth, that's
- 15:52a catalyst. That's a catalyst to action. That anger is energy. The
- 16:00tears that we cry when we see children begging on the road, when we
- 16:08see our planets water drying up. This is an energy. It's an energy
- 16:18to catalyze action. And so the first part of what to do is figure
- 16:26out how you can act, because we can't all do everything. And so
- 16:32if we don't get really clear with what what abilities I have, what opportunities
- 16:40I have, what resources I have, then we do feel despair because then
- 16:45it feels helpless and hopeless. There's too much. It can't make a big
- 16:53enough impact in enough different sectors, and so we feel despair. So we
- 17:00need to be able to figure out, with what I've been given, what
- 17:07can I do, how can I align my energies with forces that are working
- 17:15for good? And so, whether it's making sandwiches and feeding them to the
- 17:22poor, whether it's buying a bunch of blankets and going out and distributing them,
- 17:29whether it's starting an NGO, whether it's starting a tech startup and giving
- 17:36all the money you make to an NGEO, whatever it may be. We've
- 17:40all got different skills, different opportunities, different abilities, different resources to serve
- 17:49in the world. What my hands can do, my liver cannot. But
- 17:57what my liver can, dons cannot, and I actually need them both for
- 18:06the body to function. And so in the world we need everybody doing every
- 18:12thing that is their dharma. So figure out what can you do and then
- 18:22do that with as much sincerity as you possibly can, with as much efficiency
- 18:30effectiveness as you possibly can. And the second part, though, is to
- 18:40realize simultaneously, not either or not, like a ping pong ball back and
- 18:45forth, but simultaneously to realize it's all God and it's all perfect. And
- 18:56the reason it has to be simultaneous us is if I simply think it's all
- 19:04God and it's all perfect, well, hunger is absolutely not perfect. Violence
- 19:14against women is not perfect, and it's all God and it's perfect. Meaning
- 19:25if I've got them both simultaneously, what it means is that my anger,
- 19:33my pain at that which is happening in the world, and my focus on
- 19:41what I can do to be of service is a crucial part, a fundamental
- 19:52part of the perfection of the universe. We are not separate from God.
- 19:59If it's all God, we are God. If it's all perfect, we
- 20:03are perfect. So is that anger, So is that pain? So is
- 20:11you deciding and pledging to work to bring about change. If I don't fulfill
- 20:22my dharma, then it's no longer all perfect, because then I've dropped the
- 20:30literal ball on my part of that perfection. I am part of that perfection.
- 20:41So yes, it's all God. It's all perfect in the big scheme
- 20:48of things. When we have the ability to see the full tapestry and all
- 20:53of our threads interweaving together and in this intersection of time and space right here,
- 21:06right now, on this physical plane of existence, there's a lot to
- 21:14be done, and so we use all of that as catalysts for the energy
- 21:23to do that which must be done as our our thread, our perfect thread,
- 21:33in the perfect tapestry of God's creation. This is OTRFM, part of

- 22:55for the animals. Training wild animals to do things they don't understand takes four

- 23:10the Ethical Treatment of Animals five seven six two two pet a Welcome back.
- 23:17This is Sadvi Bagavati Saraswati with inspiration and transformation. There is a really tragic
- 23:29irony about the fact that whenever especially young people die because older people, we
- 23:38all sort of expect that eventually older people are going to die. But when
- 23:42especially someone who we don't expect that they're going to die, gets very sick
- 23:48or dies almost inevitably, it seems that they were the sweetest, the purest,
- 24:02the most good, the most giving, the most honest, the most
- 24:07caring. And it is this really interesting, tragic irony as you say that
- 24:17so many people who are really good people suffer, and then those who,
- 24:26as you say, are really bad people don't seem to suffer. Now,
- 24:33the dilemma with that is our definition of suffering and our idea of what determines
- 24:45a karmic path. So if we understand karma simply to be that wealth,
- 25:00health, success, longevity are rewards, an illness, failure, loss,
- 25:15early death are punishments, then it makes no sense those who should be rewarded
- 25:26are being punished, those who should be punished or being rewarded. And yet
- 25:33that's not actually how it works. The law of karma has nothing to do
- 25:38with rewards and punishments. There's no objective sense that wealth is good and poverty
- 25:49is bad, that health is good and sickness is bad, that success is
- 25:56good and failure is bad. Our karmic journey has one goal and only one
- 26:04goal, in mine our ultimate freedom, ultimately our moksha, our enlightenment,
- 26:17our god realization, self realization. Now that which we get in life,
- 26:27that which manifests as the current destiny, based on all of my past karmas
- 26:37from this life and other lives is exactly that which is most conducive for me
- 26:45to take my next step closer to awareness, to awakening. And for some
- 26:55it happens in poverty, for some, it happens in wealth, For some,
- 27:00it happens in illness, for some it happens in vibrant health. It
- 27:07depends where we are on our karmic journey. But you could look at somebody
- 27:12who's succeeding, and I have no idea where they are in their karmic journey
- 27:21and what role this current very sort of superficial level success is playing in their
- 27:30ultimate karmic journey. Versus someone who's failed or lost. We have no idea
- 27:38what role this very momentary, superficial level of failure or loss, What is
- 27:45that playing? What role is that playing? We don't know. But what
- 27:52we do know is that whatever befalls us, our question always needs to be
- 28:00the same, which is, how can I use this experience to get closer
- 28:07to God? How can I use this experience to peel back the layers of
- 28:17me, of ignorance, of false identification. The second piece about this that's
- 28:27important is when we see someone who, as you say, as a bad
- 28:33person, meaning they're dishonest, they're cruel, they take advantage, they harm
- 28:40others, and we see them succeeding. We look at them and we think
- 28:47they're being rewarded. They're doing such bad things, but they're being rewarded.
- 28:52But what we don't know is what actually their internal experience is about. I
- 28:59tell you this personally, I've been in so many situations, so many where
- 29:07we arrive in some city, let's say many many, many members of the
- 29:15community are there to receive the home to which we're going. Let's say is
- 29:23a home of people who are seem to be leaders in the community, very
- 29:30very successful, very very well to do. You know, lots of fancy
- 29:36cars in the driveway, big big house. Everybody comes over, and you
- 29:41know that everybody else is thinking, Wow, I wish we could be like
- 29:45them, aren't they lucky? And yet the moment everybody else leaves and we're
- 29:55left just sitting with that family, the tears start and you have no idea
- 30:03the suffering that is happening in those homes. They don't share it. They
- 30:11don't tell iejetto maintain Cardinal We're very worried. Kisamnie while Ka soochangay sadiejit ChEI.
- 30:19So we put on this happy face, especially if we look like we're
- 30:23big, big successes. But what I can tell you is that inside story
- 30:33is actually how much suffering there is the other last piece of this, because
- 30:41of course we know that the law of calm is perfect, we just don't
- 30:48know when things are going to blossom. You plant seeds, Some of them
- 30:52blossom right away, some take months, some take years. Somebody cheats you
- 31:02today, there's no way of knowing when that seed is going to blossom.
- 31:07Somebody helps you today, no way of knowing when that seed is going to
- 31:11blossom. But the last peace of this, when we think about people who
- 31:18are very very good, very wonderful, and especially in younger ages, when
- 31:26they suffer so much disease death, remember that, according to our philosophy,
- 31:37the whole teaching of karma and reincarnation, we're actually only here in a physical
- 31:45body in order to work our way through all of our karmic debt. We're
- 31:52here because we have to be here because in our last birth we didn't quite
- 31:57get full moksha, full freedom, full enlightenment. We didn't finish our karmic
- 32:05debts in the last life, so we came back. But we have a
- 32:12lot of people who in their previous life were very very very close. Maybe
- 32:22there were just one or two remaining karmas that needed to be worked out,
- 32:29or something left in a karmic bank account that needed to be withdrawn before they
- 32:36ultimately attain moksha and stop stop the cycle of birth and rebirth. And these
- 32:45tend to be in many cases those who suffer and die young. Their work
- 32:52was done. They came as these almost enlightened being. Hence the fact that
- 33:00they were so good that they were the ones who were like angels on earth.
- 33:08But they finished their work quickly. They didn't need a full eighty nine
- 33:14hundred years to get through as much of their karma bank account as they could.
- 33:20They were done much sooner, and so they left. But we have
- 33:27to stop thinking in our minds of illness and death as somehow a punishment.
- 33:36It isn't. It's the karmak unfolding of our own path to God. And
- 33:45so in order to really understand that, you would have to have to have
- 33:52a vision that enabled you to see an entire tapestry. I mean, I'll
- 33:55give you a give you an example. So we just finished Navarati, and
- 34:02during the time of Navarati we had this beautiful Ramlila taking place. Now,
- 34:10of course, the ram Lilah is just the essence the Tsar of the Ramayan.
- 34:16There's not actually the time in a couple hours a day of singing and
- 34:20dancing and drama to get into all of the details. But for me,
- 34:27one of the most powerful teachings in the Ramayan, and it explains to me
- 34:38this very very well, is if you begin, you begin with the story
- 34:51of when King Dashat had no no officer spring, right, he wanted offspring,
- 35:01he had no offspring. Now at that time he's out hunting. At
- 35:12the same time that he's out hunting, we have the very very very beautiful
- 35:22being whose name is escaping me at the moment sunk it Kumar, Chauvin Kumar.
- 35:32Thank you, I remember the Kumar was the Schovin that took a moment.
- 35:37Thank you. Chavin Kumar is out. He's carrying his parents on the
- 35:42pilgrimage. His parents are blind. He's taking them manyatta. They stop at
- 35:49a hermitage. He leaves his parents and the hermitage. He goes to the
- 35:52river to fetch water, fetches the water. As he's fetching water, King
- 36:00dash It at this hunting he hears a noise, thinks it's a deer,
- 36:07flings his arrow from his bow and it hits Chavin Kahmar. Now he rushes
- 36:15to see what he thought was going to be this dear and he sees Chauvin
- 36:20Kahmar, and obviously he feels horrible. He was a good man. Chauvin
- 36:29Kumar says, there's nothing you can do for me. My life is flowing
- 36:32out of me. He said, But my parents are in this hermitage.
- 36:38Please take this water to them. They're blind. Tell them what has happened.
- 36:45So King dasha It takes the water. He goes Chauvin Kahmar's parents hear
- 36:52him, and they say, Chauvin Kumar or Chauvin Kumar. What's he going
- 36:59to say? Right? So he's silent, and again they say Chauvin Kumar.
- 37:06Finally he tells them what happened, and they curse him. They curse
- 37:14him that, as we are dying today of a broken heart due to the
- 37:22loss of our son, so you will die of a broken heart due to
- 37:28the loss of your son. Now we had no sons, but now you
- 37:32look at how the entire Karmic tapestry had to be woven. He had just
- 37:39been cursed by people of very pure heart that he was going to die of
- 37:47a broken heart from the loss of his son. Fast forward, bagwan Ram,
- 38:00this embodiment, the epitome, the divine embodiment of righteousness, goodness,
- 38:08integrity, honesty, everything we strive for. But Guan Rahm was the embodiment
- 38:15of that. You couldn't be more good than Rahm was. Yet what happens
- 38:29this day of the coronation. He ends up getting sent out into the jungle
- 38:40as King Dashrat watches helplessly as Ram Lakshman Sita go as he cries for him.
- 38:57With his final words, he's actually calling out Shreven Komarsni because he remembers.
- 39:07And I love that story when we think about the tapestry of Karma,
- 39:15because otherwise you look at the Ramayan, you look at bagwan Ram, and
- 39:17you say, why, why, Why would someone who's the embodiment of goodness
- 39:28forget that he was the divine for a moment suffer so much like that?
- 39:35How could he possibly be sent away from the kingdom, sent into the jungle
- 39:42Because his father needed to die of a broken heart at the loss of his
- 39:50son, and in the same way, when we look at the suffering a
- 39:59very good pe If we simply can step back far enough to see where all
- 40:07of the karmic threads interweave, we would see a tapestry that would show us
- 40:16threads like that. This is OTRFM, part of the IOM Radio network.

- 41:52seven five seven six two two peta welcome back. This is sad Vi bag
- 41:59Of at the Urswati with Inspiration and Transformation cult. Rick literally means the wish
- 42:10fulfilling tree. Just last week, a very very sweet young girl was asking
- 42:23me whether if we whisper what we want in none the's ear do we get
- 42:31it. She was actually part of the part of the ram Leila troop and
- 42:40they had gone up to the nil Kandamaha. They have men there. She
- 42:45wanted to know whether if she she whispered in none of these ear what she
- 42:50wanted, would she get it. And we have in our in our beautiful
- 42:55spiritual heritage, all of these different opportunities to get our wishes fulfilled. And
- 43:07yes, there's power, of course, whether we say the divine is working
- 43:14through a particular type of tree, whether we say the divine is working through
- 43:20none, whether we say the divine is just working through the divine, nameless,
- 43:27formless, infinite, however we conceive of that divine, can our wishes
- 43:36be fulfilled? Of course, the dilemma is we have no idea what to
- 43:40wish for, and so we end up really stuck because a sometimes we wish
- 43:49for something that we think we want, we actually get it and we realize
- 43:57what an awful mess it was. Sometimes, by God's grace, we wish
- 44:00for something we don't get it. We realize later, thank God, I
- 44:06didn't get it. But the other dilemma is that when we wish for something
- 44:14that we don't get, we assume that the divine, whether in the form
- 44:23of a tree, whether in the form of a bull, whether in the
- 44:28form of any form or no form, that God is like a vending machine
- 44:35that we're just gonna go and we're gonna ask for what we want, and
- 44:39we're gonna do our ceremonial perichromas around or we'll tie the string, or we'll
- 44:45say the prayer, or we'll give our ductiona or we'll do the puja,
- 44:52as though we were simply putting money in a vending machine, and then when
- 44:58it doesn't give us what we want, we think the machine is broken.
- 45:06I need a different guru, I need a different man, I need a
- 45:10different mon there, I need a different religion. It's not working. This
- 45:16vending machine is not working, and we become broken. The divine gives us
- 45:30what we need, that which, as I was just saying, is that
- 45:37which is the most conducive for us to take our next step closer to God.
- 45:45And God doesn't play favorites. So the dilemma becomes if I go to
- 45:50the cultiction, I say I should be number one in my class, Well,
- 45:59if I get that, that means that somehow God decided that I was
- 46:01more important than all of the other students in the class. Also praying I
- 46:07should be number one, it would imply that somehow any of these divine embodiments
- 46:14were somehow playing favorites. And if you just got there first, that you
- 46:21could be made number one in class, or you could be the one who
- 46:25got this thing that everybody wants. But God doesn't play favorites. God's not
- 46:35going to give you somebody else's job just because you came and prayed at the
- 46:38culprish for it, or give you someone else's anything, because that would imply
- 46:49that God didn't love that other person as much as they love you. So
- 46:54this is where we have to know what to ask for. The wishes that
- 47:05get fulfilled are those that are in alignment with the divine flow of the universe.
- 47:13If I go and I say to culpric I would like Gunga to start
- 47:16flowing in the other direction. Please should go from Gunga Sagar to gomuk Tika
- 47:24all fast. I'll do my puja. Justestrascope us up the mountain. It's
- 47:34not going to work, because there is a flow of Gunga, just like
- 47:39there's a flow of the universe, there's a flow of the divine and God's
- 47:46not going to reverse the flow that impacts everybody else on earth just because you
- 47:53asked him to. So we learn to pray for actually that which is in
- 48:05the divine flow and that which takes us closer to God. So we pray
- 48:10for surrender. We pray to be free of our ego. We pray to
- 48:16be free of ignorance. We pray to be free of anger. We pray
- 48:23to learn how to forgive. We pray to have more and more a buck
- 48:30thee more and more gan to be able to have every minute, in every
- 48:37moment be karma yoga, to use every action as yoga. We pray to
- 48:50make our will God's will to come into alignment with the divine we get.
- 49:02We get a full moon when the moon doesn't ever change shape. The moon's
- 49:08shape is always the same. But we get a full moon when the moon
- 49:14comes into better alignment between the Sun and the Earth. When we have a
- 49:21new moon, am of us Ya, you could say the moon had gone
- 49:25out of alignment. She was not able to reflect any light of the Sun
- 49:31on to the Earth. But could you imagine if the moon and am of
- 49:36us Ya said I'm not going anywhere and started trying to make the Sun move.
- 49:45I want to reflect light onto the Earth, but this is where I
- 49:50am and the Sun has to come to me. Well, she wouldn't get
- 49:57very far. She'd never to be able to reflect light because the Sun,
- 50:05unlike the moon, unlike the Earth, isn't actually moving in orbit around us.
- 50:15So the only way to get that alignment is for the moon to move
- 50:21in the same way in our lives when we are looking for that light for
- 50:28whatever we are hoping for. Instead of expecting the rest of the universe to
- 50:36move, or expecting God to somehow make the rest of them universe move for
- 50:42us, we pray for the wisdom, the humility, the ability, the
- 50:51clarity to be able to move into alignment. We pray to be able to
- 51:00use every minute, in every moment getting closer to God. So if those
- 51:07are your wishes, they'll always be fulfilled. And otherwise, yeah, there's
- 51:15definitely a power. I mean, there's the power of miracles. God is
- 51:21the miracle. So whether it's miracles through the tree, miracles through none of
- 51:25the miracles, through any other infinite way, they happen. But as Pujaswamiji
- 51:34always says, the greatest miracle is you. So use your wishes to make
- 51:42yourself happen and to really experience that miracle of you in this life. This
- 51:54brings to a close this hour of inspiration and transformation. Thank you so much
- 52:04for joining me. I'm so glad to be together with you all each week,
- 52:10and I look forward to being together again next Thursday. Same time on
