Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Can You Break It Up Into Little Doables?
Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, Emily Abadi here, you are listening to five
- 0:24Speaker 1: Minute Friday from hurdle Man. What a hot week here
- 0:28Speaker 1: in New York. I am loving being in one place,
- 0:31Speaker 1: but let me tell you it is a hot place
- 0:34Speaker 1: to be. My focus right now is really getting my
- 0:39Speaker 1: feet under me, getting ahead of some work in September.
- 0:41Speaker 1: I'm going to have a fair bit of travel, so
- 0:44Speaker 1: I am trying to get my ducks in a row,
- 0:46Speaker 1: organize my life, get things in order so that I
- 0:50Speaker 1: can be a little bit more cool, calm and collected
- 0:53Speaker 1: when I am no longer in one place. This week
- 0:56Speaker 1: also marks the beginning of my Chicago marrit On training.
- 1:01Speaker 1: There I said it, I am gearing up for a
- 1:03Speaker 1: lucky number. Sixteen. Is number sixteen a lucky number? I
- 1:06Speaker 1: am unsure, but it will be lucky for me. I
- 1:09Speaker 1: am setting out to do something that is both exciting
- 1:12Speaker 1: and scary, and that is ideally run my fastest marathon
- 1:17Speaker 1: ever at my oldest age yet. I ran Chicago back
- 1:23Speaker 1: in twenty nineteen and it was such a special experience,
- 1:25Speaker 1: one that I've talked about so many times here on
- 1:27Speaker 1: the show, and so I'm excited to give it another
- 1:29Speaker 1: go with the fitness that I have now, and I'm
- 1:32Speaker 1: really ready to work for it now. With that said,
- 1:38Speaker 1: the beginning of marathon training is always humbling, but the
- 1:41Speaker 1: beginning of training for a marathon is quite challenging when
- 1:46Speaker 1: it is as hot as it is here right now.
- 1:49Speaker 1: So for context, I think the real feel today was
- 1:52Speaker 1: something like one hundred and one degrees. When I got
- 1:55Speaker 1: out for my run this morning, it was maybe seventy
- 2:00Speaker 1: too ish, but that humidity, it comes, it comes to
- 2:04Speaker 1: get you on deck. This morning I had a workout
- 2:08Speaker 1: that felt a bit intimidating. I had a warm up
- 2:12Speaker 1: mile and then one rep at six forty five pace
- 2:17Speaker 1: for three quarters of a mile. I would walk for
- 2:21Speaker 1: two minutes, and then another rep that was a quarter
- 2:23Speaker 1: of a mile at a faster pace, and then I
- 2:26Speaker 1: would walk for a minute and repeat that once before
- 2:28Speaker 1: my cool down mile. And I went into this quite
- 2:32Speaker 1: nervous about the whole thing candidly, but most of all
- 2:37Speaker 1: I was approaching it with do the best you can
- 2:40Speaker 1: with what you have, Like I knew that maybe I
- 2:42Speaker 1: wouldn't be able to hit the pace targets considering how
- 2:47Speaker 1: warm it is. And I do want to say that
- 2:49Speaker 1: if you are a runner. You are someone that's getting
- 2:51Speaker 1: out there right now. There is so much importance and
- 2:54Speaker 1: so much to be said about having grace with yourself,
- 2:58Speaker 1: because it would be bizarre if you you could perform
- 3:00Speaker 1: at your best under these conditions. It's not normal. So
- 3:03Speaker 1: there's that. So yes, I had that grace with myself
- 3:06Speaker 1: and I told myself, just do the best you can
- 3:08Speaker 1: with what you have and give your best in any
- 3:11Speaker 1: given moment. And that's how I approached the workout and
- 3:16Speaker 1: I went in and it was hard, and I just
- 3:19Speaker 1: kept saying to myself, focus on the mile you're in,
- 3:23Speaker 1: or focus on the rep that you're in, and it
- 3:26Speaker 1: might feel hard right now, but just get through this
- 3:28Speaker 1: next rep, get through this next one minute and thirty seconds,
- 3:31Speaker 1: three minutes and thirty seconds, whatever the time might be right.
- 3:35Speaker 1: And if that's not a metaphor for life. As I
- 3:38Speaker 1: finished and I felt so proud of myself, then I
- 3:41Speaker 1: don't know what is breaking it into little doables. There
- 3:45Speaker 1: are so many moments in our day today where things
- 3:50Speaker 1: feel bigger than us, things feel unachievable, that are impossible
- 3:55Speaker 1: right just because of the sheer size of the goal
- 3:59Speaker 1: or the task. But when you break it into little
- 4:02Speaker 1: doables when you have grace with yourself along the way,
- 4:06Speaker 1: when you get to this point that you can honestly
- 4:08Speaker 1: say I am giving this everything that I have, then
- 4:12Speaker 1: you have to trust and believe that everything you have
- 4:14Speaker 1: in that moment is good enough. Some days you're going
- 4:18Speaker 1: to show up and you only have fifty percent to give.
- 4:22Speaker 1: But my question to you is are you willing to
- 4:25Speaker 1: give thee hundred percent of the fifty percent? Having grace
- 4:28Speaker 1: with yourself knowing that every day isn't going to be
- 4:31Speaker 1: a fifty percent day, but some days are and that
- 4:35Speaker 1: is just fine. I hope that helps you today. I
- 4:38Speaker 1: hope that you are willing to give one hundred percent
- 4:42Speaker 1: of whatever it is that you feel capable of meeting
- 4:45Speaker 1: the world with and know that breaking it up into
- 4:47Speaker 1: little doables might just be the secret to you finding
- 4:52Speaker 1: the level of success that you are after. My question
- 4:57Speaker 1: for you this week, what's something that you're working on
- 4:59Speaker 1: right now now that you could benefit from breaking it
- 5:02Speaker 1: up into little doables? What is something that you are
- 5:05Speaker 1: working on right now that you could benefit from breaking
- 5:09Speaker 1: it up into little doables? And now a listener question. Hey, Emily,
- 5:16Speaker 1: I want to ask you about your playlists. Do you
- 5:19Speaker 1: have and use self curated playlists on streaming music? How
- 5:23Speaker 1: many do you have and do you create them for
- 5:25Speaker 1: different workouts? I love this question. I have a playlist
- 5:27Speaker 1: for yoga, running, and weightlifting. You sound like me. This
- 5:30Speaker 1: is not to say that I always stick to them
- 5:32Speaker 1: one hundred percent, but I like knowing that they are
- 5:34Speaker 1: specific and can get me in my groove. Thank you
- 5:37Speaker 1: all the best and keep going. Mindy d in n Jay,
- 5:41Speaker 1: New Jersey. Hey, Mindy, great question. I too have a
- 5:44Speaker 1: few different playlists. I have a running playlist that I
- 5:47Speaker 1: do not update nearly enough. It's called Happiness and it's
- 5:51Speaker 1: just one that I made for myself and Apple Music.
- 5:54Speaker 1: I also have like a yoga friendly chill playlist. I
- 5:58Speaker 1: do not have a weightlifting playlist, and if I'm being honest,
- 6:01Speaker 1: more often than not, I'm listening to podcasts when I'm
- 6:05Speaker 1: lifting weights in the gym. I totally agree with your
- 6:09Speaker 1: sentiment on having different playlists to get you in different grooves.
- 6:12Speaker 1: I think it really helps. And I also think that
- 6:13Speaker 1: that's beneficial because it takes the decision fatigue out of it.
- 6:17Speaker 1: The more decisions that anyone has to make when it
- 6:19Speaker 1: comes to moving their body. The more barriers that there
- 6:24Speaker 1: might be, the more excuses that can come up. So
- 6:26Speaker 1: if you have a playlist that you use for when
- 6:28Speaker 1: you're lifting weights, a playlist that you use for when
- 6:31Speaker 1: you go on a walk or when you go on
- 6:32Speaker 1: a run, one that you dance to, whatever the case
- 6:34Speaker 1: may be, again, just one less thing that you have
- 6:37Speaker 1: to think about when it comes to getting up, getting
- 6:40Speaker 1: out and getting active. I have been asked to compile
- 6:43Speaker 1: Spotify playlists in the past. I can think about that.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Maybe I'll make it a little side project next week,
- 6:49Speaker 1: and if I do, I will share them, I promise
- 6:51Speaker 1: with you in the weekly Hurdal newsletters. So if you're
- 6:54Speaker 1: not subscribed yet, the link to get in on the
- 6:57Speaker 1: sub stack in the newsletter that lands every single Friday
- 7:00Speaker 1: in your inbox is in the show notes. Make sure
