Latest / The Gill Athletics Track and Field Connections Podcast / BONUS: The Podcast About Podcasts – Featuring Sprint Culture/Unconventional Voices of T&F
Transcript
- 0:00It's bonus time. Here we go.
- 0:02This month in February of 2025, we are doing a podcast about
- 0:06podcast. We want to introduce you to
- 0:08other track and field themed podcasts that are out there that
- 0:11might be great for your listening pleasure.
- 0:14So all month we're introducing a new podcast each and every day,
- 0:17showing you who they are, what they are, how they are, why they
- 0:20got started and even their favorite episodes and most
- 0:23popular. And hopefully this adds to your
- 0:26podcast listening library. So here we go.
- 0:28Let's get started with today's podcast about podcast.
- 0:32OK? Why don't we start with kind of
- 0:34a 30,000 foot level 30 second version.
- 0:37Introduce yourself 1st and what your relationship is to our
- 0:40great sport, and then tell us what we've actually got it.
- 0:43This is kind of cool. We're doing a double feature
- 0:44today. You're an overachiever.
- 0:46You've got 2 podcasts. So tell us the name of both
- 0:49those podcasts and then we'll get into it.
- 0:51All right, so the two podcasts that I got 1 is called
- 0:54Unconventional Voice of Track and field, who I do with my now
- 0:57wife, Jay Johnson. We're both former Olympians, I
- 1:02should say former Olympians. We're both Olympians.
- 1:05I'm a former sprinter. She's a former long jumper.
- 1:08And that podcast was basically, you know, we we wanted to just
- 1:14be a bit more edgy and to talk about some things that may may
- 1:18not be the typical conversations.
- 1:20And I know everyone says that, but we were really hitting home
- 1:23on some themes that were seen as untouchable and they were
- 1:27important. And we kind of dived into stuff
- 1:30like that. And other podcasts I have came
- 1:32just after that. It's called Sprint Culture and
- 1:36it originated with my guest host being Justin Gatlin.
- 1:40But over time I started doing it with Nathaniel Mitchell, Blake
- 1:43sprinter from the UK and and also Aaron Brown, another
- 1:48Canadian sprinter that he's still competing.
- 1:53He's still competing now. So I think it was a cool dynamic
- 1:55to have, you know, Justin and it was a vet's been through a lot
- 1:58obviously. And then Nathaniel and and and
- 2:02Aaron are still competing. So they still have their foot in
- 2:05the water and not even the foot they're in there.
- 2:08So it was a cool dynamic for us to kind of bounce off with
- 2:12different debates and stuff. And that's strictly in sprints.
- 2:15Because I feel like, I mean, the long distance community has a
- 2:19really strong culture. They're they're it's they
- 2:23survive very well within their own community.
- 2:27And I feel like the sprints are only very prominent once the
- 2:31Olympics come around, maybe during the World Championships,
- 2:34but then there's no actual culture outside of that.
- 2:37So it's there. But I was just trying to bring
- 2:41it out in podcast form and all the dialogue and the
- 2:45conversations and the debates and yeah, that's, that's where
- 2:49that podcast came from. So a nice 1-2 punch that I feel
- 2:53good about. And yeah man, I I love talking
- 2:57track and field. I love that.
- 2:59So with the two podcasts, by the way, I don't know that I knew
- 3:03you and her were like we just talked about before we hit
- 3:06record about you having a new child and I was like, oh, his Co
- 3:09host. She just had a child.
- 3:10I'm you know, I'm not that bright here.
- 3:12Anson, bring it together. You're married.
- 3:14Congratulations man, that's a big deal for you guys.
- 3:17It's funny you say that because I saw that as a compliment.
- 3:22She saw it as, you know, something to be concerned about
- 3:28because I was always saying, you know, everyone knows we're
- 3:32together. Obviously.
- 3:32Look how we talk to each other. And she was, she used to always
- 3:35say, no, they have no idea. You never say anything about us.
- 3:38And I'm like, people know, come on.
- 3:40And we were, I was on a call with, with Trayvon Brammel,
- 3:45American Sprinter, and he was on speaker and she just happened to
- 3:48be in the room and she asked him and she, she, she said, she said
- 3:52straight, she was like, did you even know that me and Anson were
- 3:55together? And she was like, oh, that's
- 3:57Jade. He's like, that's Jade.
- 3:59So, so, so, so that she was like, see, and I, I, I, I
- 4:02thought it was cool because we actually, you know, we don't
- 4:07come across. It's it's it's very
- 4:08professional, the way we communicate on the show, which
- 4:10is good. And she likes that aspect of it
- 4:13too. It's just that she I always
- 4:15thought that people just knew that we were together.
- 4:17But it is a cool aspect of that show that we are able to
- 4:20maintain dialogue that doesn't necessarily seem to lovey dovey
- 4:25and cuffly. You know, at the end, at the end
- 4:27of the day, we're talking track field.
- 4:28We're trying to be objective about things and we really want
- 4:31people to, you know, we want credible credibility to what
- 4:34we're saying and stay focused on what's important.
- 4:37What a what a great lesson of marriage.
- 4:39The husband is wrong and the wife is always right.
- 4:41So that that makes a lot of sense.
- 4:42Well, let's dive into these two different podcasts here.
- 4:45So the unconventional track and field podcast and Sprint
- 4:48culture. First of all, let's start with
- 4:50what is the significance of the name?
- 4:52You kind of give us a little bit of background there and and,
- 4:54and, and help us keep the two separate.
- 4:56So for the unconventional, the name is because of blah blah
- 4:59blah, spring culture blah blah blah.
- 5:02Right, So unconventional voices of track and field kind of
- 5:06touches back on what I was talking about earlier.
- 5:08The, the dialogue, the the themes, the topics, the
- 5:13directions of the conversations go and even the way it's
- 5:16produced. It's not it's not traditional by
- 5:21any means. We actually our theme song in
- 5:26the intro is was produced by Usain Bolt.
- 5:30It's it's the clockwork rhythm. It's it's called the clockwork
- 5:34rhythm RIDTIM. So rhythm, but it's Jamaica, you
- 5:38know, so they're rhythm. So we actually got clearance
- 5:42from him to use that beat in the beginning of the show.
- 5:45And, you know, it was, it's, it was a testament to us kind of,
- 5:51you know, bring in something not typical, especially, you know,
- 5:54we really wanted to, we wanted to bring light to not only
- 6:01current themes, but current and past people, you know, and the
- 6:05fact that Usain Bolt was, you know, was a theme song.
- 6:08We had it cleared and all that was a lot of people don't even
- 6:11know that, but it was, you know, it was, it's, it's not.
- 6:16It was just to highlight the fact that this is not your
- 6:20typical. And when people listen, they
- 6:23realize that very quickly. Yeah.
- 6:27And what about Sprint culture? Sprint culture kind of came up.
- 6:33I actually have a clip of it that I'm going to put out
- 6:34eventually about how we came up with the name.
- 6:36But it was I was on a live on Instagram with Justin Gatlin and
- 6:43Will Collins, the Fast University and Adam Bolden
- 6:47actually was on as well. And I just said we were on a
- 6:52live couple a few days before that and we were I was talking
- 6:55about how the sprints don't actually have a culture and how
- 6:58it's it's kind of just basically what I said to you a little
- 7:00while ago. I was just not weak.
- 7:02It's kind of weak and weak, but not weak.
- 7:06And I was I was on the show and I was like, I was like, you know
- 7:09what, I should just call this show spree culture.
- 7:13It makes total sense. It's just would be just
- 7:15basically what it is, what we're trying to bring out.
- 7:18So yeah, that's makes sense to be.
- 7:21Yeah. So that's how that's how that's
- 7:23how that hit home. And it it really clicked.
- 7:26It really clicked. Yeah, I love that.
- 7:28What tell us what kind of style we could expect from listening
- 7:32is is unconventional. I'm gonna say just you and her
- 7:35as ever guest and then Sprint culture.
- 7:36Sounds like you maybe have gone through a few different Co hosts
- 7:40with that one. Yeah, unconventional is myself
- 7:45and Jade, we, we did some we did some response videos after some
- 7:52diamond leaks in in 2021. But we're usually it's usually
- 7:57just the two of us when we're just talking.
- 7:59I, I will say that she, she is, she's more so highlighted in
- 8:06unconventional because Jade is, she's, she's very opinionated.
- 8:12She's very fierce. And I, I like to allow her to
- 8:18get a lot of what she has to say out because she, she gives a
- 8:23perspective of a field athlete, which usually isn't captured
- 8:30often. A lot of field athletes don't
- 8:32really do content. It's really, it's very, it's
- 8:35very track based a lot of the time.
- 8:37I talk a lot of sprints. So, I mean, people get tired
- 8:40hear me talking about sprints all the time.
- 8:41But but she comes in, she's, she's, she's not scared to,
- 8:45she's not afraid to talk about anything.
- 8:47And you know, I kind of lead her in a lot of the dialogue.
- 8:50I say a lot too. So don't get me wrong, but it's,
- 8:53it's, it's a lot of her perspective And I think being a
- 8:57field athlete and being a woman as well and you know, the, the
- 9:01UK athlete doesn't, I mean, the UK accent doesn't hurt.
- 9:05You know, we kind of we kind of gear a lot around some of what
- 9:09she's saying. I kind of lead her.
- 9:10She's she's a lot more edgier than me in that show Sprint
- 9:14culture. I, I come out with the hood on
- 9:20you see me without the hood today and it's like an alter ego
- 9:24and it's just this guy's talking sprints.
- 9:27And it's just, it's, you don't know what may come up.
- 9:30You know, it's a little bit more I say, I say unconventional is a
- 9:33lot more polished, so to speak. And spring culture is a little
- 9:40bit more raw. Like I produce shows off of
- 9:43some, some, some of them are just on Instagram live.
- 9:45A lot of them are in studio, but you know, it's just Instagram
- 9:49live. You never know who's going to
- 9:50show up. You know, Fred Curly might jump
- 9:51in one day. Devin Allen may jump in one day
- 9:56like I said adult comes on like people a lot of people were were
- 10:00hearing about what was going on and if they weren't if they
- 10:02didn't come actually on they're in the chat talking.
- 10:04You know what I'm saying we'll get Trayvon Burmell who'll come
- 10:06on and he'll be in the chat. No one's been in the chat for
- 10:10bullets in the chat sometimes like it's every anybody who's
- 10:13anybody who's been in the chat during Instagram lives with
- 10:16Sprint culture would come on for his for first Sprint culture
- 10:19live. But you know, we we it's kind of
- 10:21leading the direction more of a show now.
- 10:23So I started getting more in the in the studio for season 2 and
- 10:26in this upcoming season 3, we got a new look in a different
- 10:31studio and it's going to be it's going to be a lot more of a
- 10:37produced show in this upcoming season.
- 10:40So I'm I'm excited about that. But yeah, it both shows have
- 10:44have very, very distinct feels and they're they're very clear
- 10:50cut. They're very, very different.
- 10:51They're very different. But you know, they're both,
- 10:53they're both great shows. Yeah, I, I love kind of
- 10:56visualizing this difference as you're explaining them because
- 10:59you could think that it's like, well, isn't this really just one
- 11:01show? What are you doing?
- 11:02But I can hear very distinct flavor culture.
- 11:05Your word comes up a lot there, a show versus, you know, reviews
- 11:08of Diamond Leagues and things like that.
- 11:10I could see where you're very distinct in these two different
- 11:12podcasts. Yeah, 100%.
- 11:15I would say, I'd think, I'd think Spring Culture is more of
- 11:17a show per SE and an unconventional voice of the
- 11:22track field. Is, is more of a podcast.
- 11:25You know, it's, it's, it's, it's structured very well and it's
- 11:30very, it's very precise in how it moves.
- 11:34So a lot of people like podcasts like that.
- 11:36Spring Culture is, yeah, it's produced, but you just, you
- 11:39never know where the conversation is going to go.
- 11:41And that's really Sprint talk. Really it's, you know, it's
- 11:47almost like the barbershop where it just, you know, the cookouts,
- 11:51barbecues, family gatherings, It's, it's kind of, it's kind of
- 11:55like that. And it's that's, that's the feel
- 11:58of that. When you talked earlier about,
- 12:00you know, distance culture versus Sprint culture and it's
- 12:02like, you know, there's really not a culture for Sprint and
- 12:03you're like, but then you kind of change the back.
- 12:05You're like, no, there is. And I kind of was thinking about
- 12:08verbalizing that is like, you know, Sprint culture is strong,
- 12:10but it's undefined. And that's kind of sounding what
- 12:12the Sprint culture podcast is like.
- 12:14It's strong. We know what we're talking
- 12:16about, but we're we're Barber. I love the, the the
- 12:18visualization of that barbershop talk of like, you don't know
- 12:21what we're talking. We don't necessarily have here
- 12:22the 10 topics. We want to make sure we get
- 12:24where you might have that unconventional voices of like,
- 12:27Hey, let's make sure we talk about Diamond League and this
- 12:29signing and what, you know, we got more of a structure.
- 12:31There's less structure, so less definition, but the culture
- 12:35seems very strong in Sprint's culture.
- 12:37You'll feel it. You'll definitely feel it once
- 12:39you're in it. And I think once you see it and
- 12:42feel it, then we're we're defining it for you.
- 12:46And a lot of people that come in, they know right away that
- 12:51this is they can feel it, you know, they can feel it.
- 12:54And, and a lot of the sprinters, you know, depending on how
- 12:58they're running, may or may not like the show because we're when
- 13:04I was, each host brings something different.
- 13:06When I was doing with Justin, he gave a lot of good insight
- 13:08because of his experience and his ups and downs and all that
- 13:10stuff. But he was a little bit more PC
- 13:15and you can see it. And really in those early
- 13:16stages, I was kind of, I was kind of showing him the ropes as
- 13:21far as being on air. Now you can see on his podcast,
- 13:23he's, he's come a long way. In the early stages, I was kind
- 13:26of, you know, he was kind of learning through me, being on
- 13:28with me because I, I don't know if, you know, I have a
- 13:31broadcasting background. I used to work at CBC for about
- 13:3410 years, Canada's, Canada's NBC, you know, so, so he was
- 13:39learning a lot through me and being on with me and, and, and,
- 13:42and he's come a long way. He's doing, he's doing fantastic
- 13:44right now. So he was a bit more PC.
- 13:47When I'm talking to to Nathaniel or or Aaron, they're actually
- 13:53pretty good at saying, you know, saying some things that may not
- 13:59be so easy to say when you're current athlete because they
- 14:03still got to crash past with a lot of these people.
- 14:05But they're still not able to go where I go.
- 14:08A lot of times where if I had, if I see something that wasn't
- 14:11good, I'll say it. If there's something was funny,
- 14:14I'll say it. If something, you know, someone
- 14:18sucked, I wouldn't I won't say they sucked, but because I'm I'm
- 14:21so respectful, but someone didn't have a bad, if someone
- 14:23didn't have a good performance, I'll point it out.
- 14:25If I don't think someone's going to compete well, I'll say
- 14:27straight that I don't think they're going to compete.
- 14:28Well, I don't, I don't really. I'm, I'm not too concerned too
- 14:32much with getting too wrapped up in the sprinter's feelings
- 14:36because the reality is, no matter what, a sprinter will can
- 14:38like you one day and I'll let you the next day.
- 14:41It's because of one little thing you say.
- 14:43But we want to be as objective as possible and give a, a good
- 14:47understanding to people what's going on, or at least a distinct
- 14:50perspective of what we believe is going on.
- 14:53So I'm the edgier one on spring culture no matter who comes on
- 14:57most of the time. But, and I, I had Adam Bowden on
- 15:01my show a couple of times and he was as a, as a, as a guest host,
- 15:05he was, it was great having Adam on.
- 15:07We have a great dynamic, better than he wants to admit.
- 15:10Because I can kind of, I do kind of get on his nerves.
- 15:13He's probably going to say that, but we're meant to, we're meant
- 15:15to do a show together, man, Adam, we're meant to do a show
- 15:19together. But but yeah, we've we've had
- 15:21some good times. Awesome, I love that now knowing
- 15:24that there's Min and Max to these things, what would you say
- 15:27is the average length of each one of the episodes for the two
- 15:30podcasts? Unconventional would average
- 15:34about an hour consistently. Sprint culture varies.
- 15:40You get you get an episode that may maybe close to an hour.
- 15:44You can get an episode to be about 15 minutes.
- 15:48So those would vary. It would be some some quick hit
- 15:52episodes. So those vary a bit more, but
- 15:56unconventional was was a bit more clear cut unless we had
- 15:59some, we had some bonus episodes here and there where those are,
- 16:02those are pretty short. But across the board, those are
- 16:04usually, you know, close to an hour, 45 minutes to an hour,
- 16:07yeah. That kind of, you know, pun
- 16:09intended tracks along, right. Unconventional is a little bit
- 16:11more structured. So we're going to be about an
- 16:13hour on most of ours and there's a little bit more free form.
- 16:15It could be 15 for cult spring culture, it could be two hours,
- 16:19who knows? Yeah, I like that.
- 16:21That track's long there, so. Not 2 hours, though two hours is
- 16:24the the lives made like our lives on this.
- 16:27But if I if I put them out there, the lives we don't even
- 16:29keep up. I don't even keep the lives up
- 16:31because a lot of times that's my, that's my protection for the
- 16:34sprinters. I won't just leave the lives
- 16:35because sometimes they'll say some stuff that they probably
- 16:37don't want to be out there, so I won't.
- 16:39So I'll cut it down to about an hour or less.
- 16:44You mentioned you have a background in this, which makes
- 16:47a lot of sense. Now, hearing the voice and the
- 16:49setup, this makes sense. You have background in
- 16:51broadcasting, but why? First of all, when did you
- 16:54start? How long have these two podcasts
- 16:56been going? And then why?
- 16:57What was the motivation? There's a lot of other things
- 16:59you were doing and could be doing.
- 17:00Why start a podcast? And not only one you thought you
- 17:03know to be an overachiever, you'd knock out two of them.
- 17:07Unconventional started, it was just after COVID actually.
- 17:14And me and my wife always had really good track and field
- 17:19conversations. And she's she's very good on
- 17:23camera. She's a very, she's a very good
- 17:25speaker. She had, she had done some work,
- 17:27some, some some play by play color commentary back in the
- 17:33day. That's actually how we met.
- 17:34We met at the World Indoor Championships.
- 17:36I was there with CBC and she was there with, I believe it wasn't,
- 17:40she wasn't there with BBC. She was, she was there with, she
- 17:42might have been there with World Athletics, I can't remember.
- 17:45But she was there for, for, for a color commentary, color
- 17:51commentary gig. And that's how we've kind of
- 17:53reconnected. And then one thing led to
- 17:54another and you know, here we are.
- 17:56So we have great track and field conversation.
- 18:00She's very, very, very opinionated, very, very, very
- 18:03opinionated. And, and she is a stance.
- 18:07And then she's she she can, she's very eloquent.
- 18:09She can express herself very well.
- 18:11And you know, some of the conversations were funny and
- 18:14some of the conversations we have some back and forths.
- 18:17But unconventional isn't it's not a debate show.
- 18:19Unconventional is more us talking stuff through spring
- 18:24culture is a debate show that ends up being a lot of debates.
- 18:30You know, it's funny, as I'm speaking about it, I know the
- 18:32the differences. But as I'm speaking about it,
- 18:34I'm actually even making it more clear for myself as far as the
- 18:39differences between the shows. But yeah, so we used to have a
- 18:43lot of conversations during, you know, before.
- 18:46And one day she was just like, it was actually just after we
- 18:49had an argument, oddly enough, and we weren't even talking.
- 18:53And she just wandered into the living room one day.
- 18:55It was like, we should make a podcast.
- 18:59I was like, what? She was like, yeah, we should
- 19:01make a podcast. And she left the room.
- 19:05I don't know. When we spoke again, it wasn't
- 19:07right away, but she said it. And then I thought about it.
- 19:10I was like, we got a lot of time on our hands right now.
- 19:13So, and that's how it started, man.
- 19:15And, and, and did as as it went on the, the production level
- 19:19raised. But from the beginning, it was
- 19:21good. It was good.
- 19:23I, I, I was in, I gotta be honest, unconventional.
- 19:27Unconventional is a very good podcast.
- 19:29It's a very good podcast. I just happened to be listening
- 19:32to a lot of them recently because when I knew I was gonna
- 19:35talk to you, I wanted to, cuz we took a little break.
- 19:38Obviously she had, we just had a baby.
- 19:40I don't know if people know that, but we just had a baby and
- 19:44there was a lot of stuff going on to where we had to kind of
- 19:46drift away from the podcast. I'm actually, I was doing Spring
- 19:49Culture and I'm trying to get a track and field network off of
- 19:51the ground called the Track and Field Network.
- 19:53You see the logo right here. So we could actually do some
- 19:58talking about that later because I like what you do and we can
- 20:01have. Work together in the future but
- 20:05yeah, it was we kind of drifted away from unconventional.
- 20:08But now things are starting to settle down things are getting
- 20:10bigger I'm kind of getting tracking on that work in a good
- 20:12place spring culture. I got the rolling, I got staff,
- 20:15so I'm ready to get back into unconventional, but
- 20:18unconventional was a very, it's a very, very good podcast.
- 20:20And even if you watch, if you listen to it now, we, we
- 20:23basically told the future, man, we told the future everything
- 20:26that's happening right now. We discussed and what should be
- 20:29happening. And because we were ripping into
- 20:31a lot of stuff that wasn't happening that needs to happen
- 20:33in order for the sport to go the direction that it needs to go.
- 20:36I think that we're kind of doing that now, but I know that I know
- 20:40the right people were listening because I'm seeing where we, we
- 20:43laugh about it. Sometimes we're like, Yo, I know
- 20:46they heard us talking about this because it's way too clear cut
- 20:49that, that, that they were hearing this stuff.
- 20:51So that would be a cool way to, if you go back and listen to
- 20:54unconventional now, it would be, it would be cool to kind of see
- 20:57how things have developed now if with what we were articulating
- 21:00in those times. So unconventional.
- 21:03Started right as COVID was hitting, so maybe around 2020 or
- 21:0620. Late 2020-2021.
- 21:08What about 2021? Yeah, and what about Sprint
- 21:10culture and. Then Sprint culture started in
- 21:132022 just before just after the just after the World
- 21:22Championships in Oregon. And I used to just go live
- 21:28sometimes on Instagram. And before I knew it, it was
- 21:31we're getting a lot of good views and the lives.
- 21:34And Justin came in on one of the lives one day and then he
- 21:37contacted me and he was like, yo, man, we should, we should, I
- 21:40don't know, we should, we should do this more often type of
- 21:42thing. And I was, I didn't know exactly
- 21:47what I wanted to do, but I just knew I liked being live.
- 21:49I, I, I, I used to go live playing video games a lot on
- 21:52Twitch. So I'm very comfortable alive.
- 21:56There's something about being live.
- 21:57I, I, I like a lot of people hate being live.
- 22:00Yeah, it's it's. It's a different skill for sure.
- 22:03Absolutely. It's funny, it's funny.
- 22:04I only realized it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a skill when I'm on
- 22:07live with people because they, I can see it's, they're a little
- 22:11bit tense, but I something about it, man, I, I just, I just it,
- 22:15it feels good, you know, And that's how spring culture
- 22:18started. It was a live show.
- 22:21So that that just LED into a show once I was going live
- 22:27during 2022. And then, yeah, we just, we just
- 22:32kept on doing it, man. And then now it's gotten to the
- 22:33point where you know, it's it's, it's a produced show, so.
- 22:37So in business, Anson, you know, like here at Gill, you know, we
- 22:41manufacture track equipment. We have lots of different people
- 22:44that will buy our equipment. We have moms and dads that'll
- 22:46buy like a discus or something for Christmas or for their kids
- 22:50for track season. We sell the athletic directors,
- 22:52contractors, but our ideal customer profile, like the
- 22:57person that we have in mind when we design new products, market
- 23:00trade shows, etcetera, is the high school and college track
- 23:04coach. That's our ideal.
- 23:06Other people may benefit from it, mom and dad, architects,
- 23:09etcetera, but we are singularly focused on those track coaches.
- 23:12The same can be said for your podcast here.
- 23:15Many different people, athletes, coaches, fans may participate
- 23:19and listen to episodes, but you're really in, you know, you
- 23:22got a different culture. I don't want to overuse that
- 23:24word for each, the two different podcasts here, but you're really
- 23:27speaking to a certain type of person.
- 23:30Tell to us about your ideal listener profile.
- 23:32Who are the people that are going to get the most out of
- 23:35unconventional voices and the most out of Sprint culture?
- 23:38They're probably different and, you know, with nuances there.
- 23:42Yeah. I would say that for
- 23:44unconventional, we're trying to cover the male and female crowd
- 23:50for one, and for two, it's geared more towards, it's geared
- 23:57more towards an an adult audience, forward thinking, big
- 24:01picture people, you know, people who like to understand and
- 24:07discuss themes and then how they relate to everyday life.
- 24:14And also, you know, from an athletic standpoint, yeah, we,
- 24:19we talk about the stats and results and stuff like that.
- 24:21But we talk a lot about, we talk a lot about the life that
- 24:28happens throughout the sport. You know, whether it's, you
- 24:35know, the, whether it's drama, whether it's, you know,
- 24:39shortcomings, whether it's, you know, some, some, some theme
- 24:44that's being discussed or has, has come up is we, we, we, we,
- 24:48we try to talk about the conversations underneath the
- 24:53conversations. So we're not just giving news.
- 24:57It's not a, it's not a, hey, you're going to get news, you
- 25:00know, up to date news. Like we didn't even
- 25:03unconventional, wasn't even consistently a certain time.
- 25:06We, we, we would just come out when it was time to come out.
- 25:09It was, it was consistent as far as the amount we were doing, but
- 25:11it wasn't like, OK, every Wednesday it's going to be this.
- 25:14And that was unconventional as well.
- 25:17But yes, but we, we, we want, we wanted to get below the surface
- 25:24as far as a lot of things. So that's, that's how that was
- 25:28Sprint culture. That's, that could be geared
- 25:33more towards somewhat of a younger audience, so to speak.
- 25:35I'm I'm trying to geared more towards a little bit older now,
- 25:39because I find that the sprints, at least from what I've seen,
- 25:49they haven't really geared towards the the audience that
- 25:53has, you know, that watches a lot of mainstream sports.
- 25:58A lot of the mainstream sports fans are, you know, they're
- 26:01middle-aged people and, you know, I don't know if it's
- 26:04because I just had a kid or something, but it's, it's I I I
- 26:08I Sprint culture was meant to be.
- 26:11It was we're still keeping it edgy.
- 26:12It's still going to be funny, but I think we're we're, we're
- 26:14kind of gearing more towards now, you know, getting a bit
- 26:20more into the, the, the, the, the, the culture of the athletes
- 26:26of the past. So, you know, tapping into some
- 26:28of the fans of former athletes as opposed to the current
- 26:32athletes and who their fans are, which are young.
- 26:34We're still going to get them. But I'd say that spring culture
- 26:39is more likely to kind of gear towards the younger crowd more
- 26:43than unconventional. But we are fearing the direction
- 26:47of you know, you know, the the older audience, but still edgy,
- 26:52but you know a lot more, a lot more intelligent dialogue and
- 26:56discussions as far as what's going on, but you know, still
- 27:00keeping the edge you. Know as you go through this
- 27:04journey over years and when you do something like a podcast and
- 27:06you're being recorded so it's on wack so I can go back and listen
- 27:08to the very first one and the 100th one or what not.
- 27:11If you're not evolving through that process, well then I just
- 27:16kind of feel bad for you. So I like how you, you know,
- 27:19obviously get married and having kids, those changes.
- 27:21If you're not evolving, it's a little bit like, well, man, I'm
- 27:23not sure this is the right. Like what am I listening to this
- 27:26for if it's just the same thing over and.
- 27:27Over so I. Appreciate that now you know you
- 27:30have been behind the mic on every single one of these this
- 27:34kind of A2 parter questions. Most of the time these are not
- 27:37the exact same answer here for you.
- 27:40What has been and again, two parter in regards to the two
- 27:43different podcasts here. What's been your favorite
- 27:45episode that you've ever recorded?
- 27:47And then kind of like I said, it's not necessarily the same
- 27:50answer. What's been the most popular,
- 27:51most downloaded episode as well? So what's been your favorite and
- 27:55maybe if it's a different one, what's maybe been the most
- 27:57popular episode for each one of the shows?
- 28:00For unconventional voices of track and field, my favorite
- 28:04episode was an episode called Are You Not Entertained?
- 28:11And even the cover art for the episode, if you go on Spotify or
- 28:16on Apple podcast or any platform, you'll see it's a it's
- 28:20a picture of Russell Crowe from Gladiator.
- 28:25And he's like in a fighting pose.
- 28:27And it's are you not, Are you not entertained?
- 28:31But it, it was, we're basically going in on why the sport was so
- 28:37boring, right? And you know, a lot of times you
- 28:42don't want to have these conversations if you got a track
- 28:44field podcast because you want to boost it up.
- 28:46But this is more like, Yo, these things need to change, man.
- 28:49It was more like what we're seeing here.
- 28:52We have to talk about, we have to air out because this needs to
- 28:56change and this we need to start doing this.
- 28:59And why I like it so much. Is it it?
- 29:03Like I said before, this was the one of the main episodes that I
- 29:07swear this episode has been like a blueprint for a lot of what's
- 29:09happening right now. From from saying that, you know,
- 29:14you know, another organization is going to have to, you know,
- 29:18come in to make World Athletics, kind of, you know, bring the
- 29:22bootstraps up and make some changes as far as they're
- 29:24they're concerned or you know, the way, the way.
- 29:29I don't want to say too much, but it's it's in that episode,
- 29:33episode 3. It's we, we told the future
- 29:36band. Yeah, I remember that episode,
- 29:38actually. Yeah, really.
- 29:39Yeah. So it was it was AI would say
- 29:42that was what that was my favorite for that and for for
- 29:45for Sprint culture. I would say episode episode 4 I
- 29:55was with I had Justin Gatlin on and I had I had a bulletin on
- 30:01and it was the title of it was did Marcel Jacobs win a Rio
- 30:06Olympics Right and. OK, now I see the two
- 30:11differences. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 30:14And this is, you know, it was such a great debate with with
- 30:19Ado and Justin because they both believed that it was more
- 30:22difficult. And that was kind of like with
- 30:24no crowd, like, come on, it was it was we talked about a lot of
- 30:27things in in that episode, you know, spoke about Cindy
- 30:30McLaughlin, you know, running a 60 indoor.
- 30:36I would say too much. But that was it was really it
- 30:37was a really good episode. A lot of lot of debate, a lot of
- 30:40laughs, a lot of it got heated. I don't, I don't.
- 30:43I don't cursed Adobold. Did.
- 30:47Wow. Yeah, that takes something.
- 30:49Yeah, but he he, I love it. I love his personality when he
- 30:53comes on my show. It's great TV.
- 30:55And This is why I was joking around saying we should do a
- 30:58show together. I just, I just think I I like
- 31:00when he looses up a bit, you know, it's, it's, it's cool.
- 31:03And so I'd say that, but there was also an episode I did, I
- 31:06think it was the episode after episode 5.
- 31:09And I had Devin Allen and Fred Curly on and Justin was on as
- 31:14well. And it was it was saying it was
- 31:17called Fred Curly's just being truthful.
- 31:20And it was episode where he the European Indoor championships
- 31:24just finished and Marcel Jacobs end up coming second to his
- 31:28countrymen checker rally. What's his first name?
- 31:31I can't remember, but Marcel came second.
- 31:34And I asked, I asked Fred about it and he kind of laughed,
- 31:38right. And I don't know if you
- 31:40remember, there was this big thing when when Fred was like, I
- 31:43basically asked him. I was like, he he was saying the
- 31:46real dogs, no, people don't run indoors.
- 31:48The real dogs come out outdoors. And I said, is Marcel a real
- 31:52dog? He's like, I don't think so,
- 31:54truthfully. And that that flew everywhere.
- 31:58It's funny because yeah, and that was that went.
- 32:02And I swear when I when it happened, I was like, you know,
- 32:04this is going to be a thing. And it's funny.
- 32:06It was that episode was it was the night well, over here, like
- 32:11I said, I'm five hours ahead. So it actually I I would have
- 32:15been recording the show like one in the morning.
- 32:16It was actually my birthday at about 1:00 in the morning.
- 32:18It wasn't my birthday there, but it was my birthday here.
- 32:21And that's when the show really was like shifted like, OK, this
- 32:25is a thing now. This is a thing because that was
- 32:28everywhere. And it's like we really were
- 32:30creating the culture of the rivalry and the way these guys
- 32:33actually are wired and think and talk and how they view each
- 32:37other. And so that was that was a, it
- 32:41was a good episode. I mean, Devin was on there.
- 32:43He said a lot of cool things. But Fred came on.
- 32:45He used to always come in the lives randomly, but he used to.
- 32:47He, he, he, he'll get some, He'll get some quotes out there,
- 32:50man. I love it.
- 32:51I love it when Devin was there too.
- 32:54Hey, great guy, loved. Devin, that was cool.
- 32:56Yeah. Would would you?
- 32:57Consider when you think about your downloads and stuff, are
- 32:59those the two maybe more popular episodes as well?
- 33:02Or do you have any that like blew up for clips like that or
- 33:06you know, anything like that? That that that Fred Curly
- 33:09episode, that was big. That was what I wanted.
- 33:11Yeah. That was really, really
- 33:12downloaded a lot and people were stealing the clip from all over
- 33:16the place. I don't really care at that
- 33:18stage because really I'm I'm more about the sport as a whole
- 33:22just getting big so that those two shows, you know, they have
- 33:27two different types of perspectives.
- 33:28But it's overall like that just hit home the fact that I just
- 33:32want take it whatever, like I just want it to be.
- 33:37So I want track and field to be viewed the way I view it, which
- 33:39is with the track and field network.
- 33:41But the long game as far as that's concerned is to have a
- 33:47bunch of different personalities, a bunch of
- 33:48different types of shows in one place.
- 33:51The track and field network is pretty cut and dry, right?
- 33:54And the these are two types of shows that could be on there
- 33:57and, you know, a show like yours or a show like, you know, some
- 34:00of the other track and field podcasts that I like.
- 34:03And not even that I like, just that people like, I just want
- 34:06different perspectives and I want different, different
- 34:08things. But the overarching voice of
- 34:12track and field is not going to be one voice.
- 34:14It's going to be a bunch of voices.
- 34:16And it's it's it's about creating, you know, it's about
- 34:22unspreading the fingers and making the 1st and, you know,
- 34:25actually having impact. So yeah, those I wasn't really
- 34:32too out. Now I kind of trip a bit more
- 34:34when people steal content. But back then when people were
- 34:38stealing that clip and putting their, I was like, this is good.
- 34:41Yeah, it's good for the sport. I love that now.
- 34:44And so you had some fairly extensive background in
- 34:47broadcasting and media, but you've been doing these podcasts
- 34:51now for we're getting on our fourth year here for, you know,
- 34:54unconventional. What have you learned as a host?
- 34:56And, you know, maybe I don't want you necessarily to speak
- 34:59for Jade, but maybe Jade plays a part in this.
- 35:00What have you learned in these three to four years of these
- 35:03different shows, different aspects?
- 35:06Not necessarily, you know, well, I learned how Marcel runs the
- 35:10100. You know, things like they could
- 35:11be hardware, software, interviewing skills, production,
- 35:16post production. What have you learned as the
- 35:18host of these shows? Well, I've learned a lot, but if
- 35:22I was going to pick something that stands out, I would say
- 35:25that a lot of emphasis is put on being first a lot of the time
- 35:34and I don't, I don't really buy into that.
- 35:40Are you talking first for like track and field or first in
- 35:43podcasting world here? 1st, 1st That's a good question
- 35:47actually. Yeah, I'm at 1st as far as
- 35:50response to news. Yeah, perfect.
- 35:53Good. OK.
- 35:53Keep going and I think that everyone, a lot of people are
- 35:58going to try to be first. So cool.
- 36:01But I think that at least the bangle that I'm coming from is
- 36:05that I, I, I like to, with whatever show it is, take time
- 36:09as far as how I'm going to evaluate a situation and how I'm
- 36:15going to convey the message. And I find that, you know, it's,
- 36:24that works for me. And I, I find that the response
- 36:26is, is to me better because I, I, you know, you, you, you
- 36:36always want to get to a party early.
- 36:37But I mean, you don't want to get to the party early if you,
- 36:40if you take a shower, you know what I'm saying?
- 36:44You know, say put yourself together and you show up and you
- 36:47make entrance. I, I look at it more like that,
- 36:49you know, and, and you know, but that's not the typical way that
- 36:53a lot of people look at how they present their content.
- 36:55But that's definitely how I do it.
- 36:57And you know, that's that's working for me.
- 37:00Would you say that gives you, when you have that kind of
- 37:02posture towards, you know, breaking news or news in
- 37:05general, when you kind of allow more information, do you see,
- 37:10think you get a little bit more of a new, a nuanced response to
- 37:13it since you're not, you know, when you when it first breaks,
- 37:16no one knows anything but the initial thing that they see when
- 37:18there's nuance behind it and you've talked to other people or
- 37:22perspective behind it and you talk to other people maybe
- 37:24allows you to be a little bit more nuanced with your actual
- 37:26response and conversation about the the topic.
- 37:29Yeah, 100%. And, and I'm less likely to look
- 37:31back at something I said and, and wish I could take it back.
- 37:36Yeah, you know what I'm saying. And I'm more likely to stand
- 37:39behind what I say and I prefer it that way.
- 37:44And not only that I can, I can get it.
- 37:46I can, I'm able to convey what I'm trying to say in the, in a
- 37:49more, in a way that's going to settle in.
- 37:52But a lot of people still aren't going to agree, which is cool.
- 37:55But at least I'm I'm OK with what I said and how I said it
- 38:00and I'll get it across the way I want to.
- 38:02And I could that would go for Jade as well.
- 38:04She she you know, I think she would be she'd be more OK with
- 38:11get saying what you have to say right away.
- 38:13But me myself, I'm cool with and she's cool with this as well as
- 38:19as far as just, you know, not needing to be first, not just
- 38:24just responding with, you know, a lot of times you respond too
- 38:27fast. You might not have enough to you
- 38:29might not have anything really to say anyways, but you just
- 38:31want to be first. And I that's not really that
- 38:33wasn't. I'm trying to shower before I go
- 38:36to the party man. We all appreciate that, Anson.
- 38:40Thank you for that. All right, my friend, we got our
- 38:44last two questions here. 1 is where can we find the podcast
- 38:47you kind of eluded and, and maybe they're both the same
- 38:49because you're the same producer behind that you mentioned
- 38:51Spotify and Apple. Yeah, so unconventional Moisture
- 38:55Track and field is on Spotify and Apple Podcasts and various
- 38:59other podcast platforms. Yeah, once you hit Apple, you
- 39:01hit like 100 other apps. Yeah, exactly, exactly.
- 39:04So that's more so your listening pleasure.
- 39:08There's we've got some visual clips in the second two seasons
- 39:12that came out on YouTube, but. Do you put that?
- 39:16Do you put the whole show on YouTube or no?
- 39:17No, I don't put, we don't put the, we don't put the whole
- 39:19show. For we're audio focused.
- 39:21Yeah, well, actually season 1, the full shows were on, but
- 39:24after that we was more audio focused and we we did some
- 39:27clipping for YouTube and Sprint culture is is somewhat the
- 39:33opposite. The the full episodes.
- 39:35Yeah, they're on. They're on Spotify and on Apple
- 39:41Podcasts and all that stuff. But more of the focus was
- 39:44visually on YouTube. So you know, it has, it has more
- 39:50of a YouTube presence for Sprint culture, but it's, it's still
- 39:53really good just to listen as well.
- 39:55And it's on all those platforms as well.
- 39:57And does it maybe more start out on Instagram Live as well or or?
- 40:03Yeah. So the I I'd consider it a a
- 40:06live recording, so to speak, that would happen on Instagram
- 40:10Live that turned into produced episodes.
- 40:14But now in this upcoming season, we may, we may or may not have
- 40:23the Instagram Live aspect to it, which people love.
- 40:27So I don't know. I'm still, I'm still
- 40:28deliberating as far as that, but.
- 40:30Maybe more studio on that, but maybe we'll we'll see.
- 40:33Yeah, yeah. We'll see.
- 40:34Yeah, we'll see. But.
- 40:35Something tells me, you know, as you were talking about the
- 40:38different aspects here today, your eyes kind of lit up when
- 40:42you talked about Instagram Live and live.
- 40:44So something tells me even if you pivot to more of a studio,
- 40:46there's going to be some live aspects somewhere, somehow.
- 40:50Whether it's the set up, the preview, I don't know.
- 40:52It feels like it's going to be hard to keep you away from some
- 40:54kind of live aspect with your shows.
- 40:56Well, I, I, I distinguish between a lot of my, my lives
- 41:00now I'll say it'll, I'll have on the screen, it'll say Sprint
- 41:03culture live. So you'll know that this is the
- 41:05Sprint culture. This is Sprint culture live.
- 41:07And then Sprint culture is the produced episodes.
- 41:10So yeah, the live aspect I'm not going to get away from because
- 41:15like I said, I love being live. Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
- 41:17I never know who's going to show up.
- 41:18Somethings gonna happen. Yeah, yeah.
- 41:20And people can never know when that live sign is gonna show up
- 41:23on Instagram. So that's one of their toes.
- 41:25Yeah, I love. It I love it All right, last
- 41:27question here Anson, the average podcast listener listens to
- 41:30between 7:00 and 10:00 different podcasts.
- 41:33It's part of the reasoning by we're doing this series with
- 41:37other podcast here for you. I'm just curious, I'm assuming
- 41:40since you create podcasts, maybe you're a podcast listener.
- 41:42What's your favorite podcast that you listen to that's not
- 41:45your own and not maybe track related either?
- 41:50Well, you know why? I actually just came across this
- 41:52podcast fairly recently. It's a podcast called The Finish
- 41:58Line and it's from these, these two guys.
- 42:02One of them is named Anderson Amaroli.
- 42:04He's a, he has a, he has a platform called the final leg on
- 42:09YouTube. And, and this other guy named
- 42:12coach Rob. And he also, he has a lot of, he
- 42:15has a lot of content on YouTube as well.
- 42:17And they came together and they made a, they made a podcast.
- 42:21I came across a very late and I was the first episode I listened
- 42:26to. They were talking about Grand
- 42:27Slam track and what, what Tara Davis has said about it and they
- 42:32really dove into it. It's very, it's very intelligent
- 42:35conversation and I was it's very, you know, it's produced
- 42:39well, it's and they're consistent.
- 42:43I I, I like, I really like their show together.
- 42:47So yeah, I'd say they might not even know actually, I messaged
- 42:51them. I messaged, you know, Anderson
- 42:53the other day and I was like, yo, I didn't know you had a
- 42:54podcast. I really like it, man.
- 42:56And he was, he's pretty appreciative of that.
- 42:59He's been on my radar for a while track and field network
- 43:01wise. But yeah, it's called the, it's
- 43:04called the finish Line and solid, solid track and field
- 43:09discussions. I I I like, I like that show.
- 43:12Do you have any favorites that aren't track related?
- 43:15Yeah, the typical Joe Rogan guy. There's another show slash
- 43:22podcast I really like called it, It is what it is.
- 43:26And also $1,000,000 worth of game.
- 43:29There's another podcast that's that's pretty good as well.
- 43:34Yeah, and I, I come across, I come across some shows sometimes
- 43:40that I may not go back to and I may, I may even forget what the
- 43:44podcast name is. But I think there's so many
- 43:46podcasts out now that you may not even necessarily remember
- 43:49all the shows you listen to, Right.
- 43:50But but you know, you know, it's, it's the world is the
- 43:54direction we're going right now. You know, a lot of different
- 43:56perspectives. A lot of people are stepping
- 43:58their game up as far as how they're presenting it.
- 43:59So Yep. Absolutely, yeah.
- 44:02All right, well, dear listener, you know, by listening to this
- 44:06on your app right now on this podcast, we're done.
- 44:07We're basically done with the show.
- 44:08So here is my challenge to you. We had a double dip today,
- 44:12right? So we had two podcasts, the
- 44:14Unconventional Voices of track and field and Sprint culture.
- 44:17So my challenge is on this exact same app you're using right now,
- 44:21you can hit pause right here, go to the search function in this
- 44:23app that you're using right here and just search Unconventional
- 44:26voices. That's going that's going to
- 44:28bring up that podcast or, and, or search Sprint culture.
- 44:33And here's how I like to kind of figure out a a new show.
- 44:36If I'm, if it's going to be one that I'm going to keep going.
- 44:37What's kind of the flavor of it is one is I listen to their
- 44:40latest episode. So listen to the latest
- 44:42unconventional voices and the latest Sprint culture.
- 44:44That'll kind of give you where they are, where they left off on
- 44:47unconventional voices and where they are with Sprint culture on
- 44:49their flavor, their style, their their aura, if you will.
- 44:52And then, you know, he mentioned some of his favorite ones from
- 44:55back in the day, the one with the Devon and Fred and Jay was
- 45:00in there. That's a good one.
- 45:01Go check out he if it's a favorite of his, it's probably a
- 45:03pretty good show. And then, and I remember this
- 45:06one, I think it was episode 3, the are you not entertained?
- 45:09Go back and listen to that one because that'll kind of give you
- 45:12the origin and just the whole style of what they're going for.
- 45:14And then make sure you hit the subscribe button because that's
- 45:16the best way to know when they publish their next one.
- 45:18Then you'll never miss 1. So go check out Unconventional
- 45:21track, unconventional voices of track and Field with Anson and
- 45:25his wife Jada. Beautiful new parents here, by
- 45:27the way, as well. We give congratulations to them
- 45:29on that. And then Sprint culture, which
- 45:31sounds like Sprint culture is Anson.
- 45:32And then whoever he just corrals into the show, which that makes
- 45:35for its own fun there. But go check those guys out
- 45:37right now. And I hope they add blessings
- 45:40and value into your life and specifically your podcast life.
- 45:43Anson, thank you so much. Can I say one more thing?
- 45:45Absolutely, Mike. Mike, I think it's really cool
- 45:47that you're doing this, man. I think it's really cool that
- 45:49you're highlighting some of the podcasts that you come across
- 45:51and the personalities and the creators, because a lot of
- 45:54people that get the space are usually trying to just look for,
- 45:57look out for themselves and fend for themselves.
- 45:59And I really think it's cool that you're looking at the big
- 46:01picture and, you know, you're highlighting a lot of these
- 46:04other podcasts that are supposed to be considered competition.
- 46:08And it's it's it's we're one we're one voice man.
- 46:12And I think it's really cool that you're doing this.
- 46:14So respect a big up to you for this man.
- 46:15For real. Thank.
- 46:16You thank you for that. I believe in diversity in voices
- 46:20and that's actually I love like if I were ever to start a
- 46:22different podcast, I would call it unconventional voices.
- 46:24I I just love that that is your podcast name there.
- 46:27I think, you know, we need to hear from, you know, we're very
- 46:30American based. Obviously we need to hear from
- 46:32more international voices. We need to hear from more women
- 46:34voices. We need to hear from more
- 46:35minority voices because that is what has made our sport the
- 46:38greatest sport. We can talk about TV ratings and
- 46:42attendances and all that on any other show any other time.
- 46:45But in regards to just the the essence of the sport, there is
- 46:48nothing that beats track and field.
- 46:49It is the basis of every other sport out there and it's been
- 46:52because of women and minorities and international.
- 46:55So we need to hear from those voices.
- 46:57And so I'm always very grateful for what you guys do because I I
- 47:00know what it takes to put on a podcast.
- 47:01It's it's it's easy and that's air quotes there, but it's also
- 47:05a lot of work. And so I'm just grateful for you
- 47:07and Jada for what you guys do for this show and all the Co
- 47:10hosts you've had. It's it's content that's
- 47:12valuable and it's making our sport better.
- 47:14And I'm just so grateful for that.
- 47:15So I'm, you know, part of my ethos in this world is to help
- 47:19spread that. And that's what this hopefully
- 47:21will do, just a small part to help spread that that that love
- 47:23that you deserve. Nice man, Nice.
- 47:27All right. Thank you, Yancey.
- 47:27Appreciate you. Cool.
