- 3:49Speaker 3: Hi, Hi, beauty, how are y'all?
- 3:59Speaker 5: I don't mind if you don't mind, introduce yourself and.
- 4:04Speaker 2: In Madison.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Okay.
- 4:06Speaker 5: My name is Shannon Gearrett. We are from Dallas, Texas.
- 4:12Speaker 2: I have been a mommy of us.
- 4:14Speaker 5: Find a Bit for the Baby for thirteen years and
- 4:17Speaker 5: this is my little she ro is what I like
- 4:20Speaker 5: to call her. So your name, I'm Madison, and she's thirteen,
- 4:26Speaker 5: she's in eighth grade and she is a true girl teenager.
- 4:30Speaker 3: So yeah, I know how that goes.
- 4:34Speaker 5: Can welcome you, We welcome you, and we're glad to
- 4:38Speaker 5: be here with us tonight. Miss Don Ramsey, if you're there,
- 4:42Speaker 5: if you could join us?
- 4:48Speaker 4: Hello?
- 4:48Speaker 6: Can you all hear me?
- 4:50Speaker 2: Yes, ma'am? How are you hid?
- 4:55Speaker 5: And if you don't mind, miss Don, can you introduce yourself?
- 5:03Speaker 5: I think her scream may have frozen. Can you hear us?
- 5:14Speaker 2: Okay? Now I can hear yes, Okay, can you introduce yourself? Okay? Sure.
- 5:21Speaker 6: My name is Dawn. I have a channel called ice
- 5:25Speaker 6: Slate Spina biffada. I'm from Chicago, forty two years old.
- 5:33Speaker 6: I was born with Mino maningosil spina biffada and I'm
- 5:42Speaker 6: just happy to be here, okay.
- 5:45Speaker 5: And for those who don't know anything else, you want
- 5:48Speaker 5: to know.
- 5:51Speaker 2: That's it right now.
- 5:53Speaker 5: Spina biffada is a congenital defect of the spine in
- 5:57Speaker 5: which part of the spinal cord is ninjas are exposed
- 6:02Speaker 5: through the gap and the backbone, often causing paralysis of
- 6:06Speaker 5: the lower limbs. It's not it's also considered the snowflake
- 6:12Speaker 5: disorder because no two people have it the same. So, Maddie,
- 6:17Speaker 5: if you would like to answer, how does spain a
- 6:22Speaker 5: vi at your life? And if you don't want to answer,
- 6:29Speaker 5: your mom can for you, like on a daily basis,
- 6:41Speaker 5: she also has the male.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Her effects are mainly her bladder and about.
- 6:51Speaker 5: Difficulty, so she does have to cathorize on a daily basis.
- 6:56Speaker 5: We are on a bowel regiment. She fortunately she has
- 7:00Speaker 5: heard all her mobility and she has been ooh opal
- 7:10Speaker 5: since she was I think two thinks she started walking
- 7:13Speaker 5: at two and a half.
- 7:16Speaker 3: She's had.
- 7:19Speaker 5: One, two, three, three surgeries that were geared towards finding bifferda.
- 7:23Speaker 5: So again most of her complications are but batter, bladder
- 7:27Speaker 5: and vow.
- 7:28Speaker 3: So she had a bladder augmentation actually last.
- 7:30Speaker 5: Year, so we are a year into recovering from that,
- 7:36Speaker 5: and then she also has the VP shunt.
- 7:39Speaker 3: Fortunately we've never had any revisions to that.
- 7:44Speaker 5: So for the most part, her biggest thing is just
- 7:46Speaker 5: cathorizing stand on top of being independent in her inconsonence issues.
- 7:52Speaker 5: So okay, and how does find a bit for the
- 7:58Speaker 5: affect you.
- 8:03Speaker 6: I have bladder control issues, vowel issues, I believe. Also
- 8:14Speaker 6: it affected my vision and that's because I had a
- 8:20Speaker 6: history of hydrocephalis. But I don't have a shunt. And
- 8:29Speaker 6: I was walking. I was kind of like Madison. I
- 8:34Speaker 6: was walking, but then as I gotten older, it's you know,
- 8:40Speaker 6: my balance wasn't great and I couldn't stand to walk
- 8:46Speaker 6: no more than five minutes. And I used to fall
- 8:53Speaker 6: all the time too. But I did walk with leg
- 8:56Speaker 6: braces and crutches. And also I I've experienced pressure wounds
- 9:04Speaker 6: and I lost.
- 9:05Speaker 2: A limb.
- 9:08Speaker 6: My left leg and this this was recently. So yeah,
- 9:14Speaker 6: that's about it. That has really affected my.
- 9:19Speaker 2: You know body.
- 9:21Speaker 6: But I try to take better care of myself, you know,
- 9:25Speaker 6: and I do live by myself, so which is the
- 9:29Speaker 6: awesome thing. I did achieve that, right, So that's and
- 9:36Speaker 6: I also have a learning disability.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Okay, did you got questions?
- 9:44Speaker 7: No, I don't have questions, but I do want to
- 9:46Speaker 7: let don know that I can kind of relate because
- 9:49Speaker 7: I'm also currently now dealing with a author. Yeah, I agree, because.
- 9:59Speaker 2: My parents was told, huh m, can you hear us?
- 10:15Speaker 2: Can you hear us? I don't think she can hear me.
- 10:25Speaker 7: She can't hear you.
- 10:27Speaker 5: May you may have to go out and come back.
- 10:31Speaker 5: Oh yeah, she definitely don't have to go out and
- 10:33Speaker 5: come back.
- 10:34Speaker 7: Yeah, but yeah, no, I definitely can relate to what
- 10:38Speaker 7: she's going through because who Maddie.
- 10:44Speaker 5: Yeah, Maddie has gotten wounds and things on her on
- 10:47Speaker 5: her feet that she won't even know that they're there
- 10:51Speaker 5: becaucause there's no feeling there.
- 10:53Speaker 3: So we have the experience. That's part that's you don't
- 10:59Speaker 3: really have to know, is that you should have it.
- 11:02Speaker 5: We went on a vacation to Orlando and at a
- 11:05Speaker 5: water park, I mean she's just running around playing and
- 11:09Speaker 5: made it back to the hotel and before we knew it,
- 11:11Speaker 5: somebody just like, somebody's bleeding and it was nobody knew.
- 11:15Speaker 3: So yeah, but she's dealt with that a few times
- 11:18Speaker 3: as well.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:20Speaker 7: I actually stepped on the nail and didn't realize it
- 11:22Speaker 7: and started and started bleeding.
- 11:24Speaker 5: Was like, okay, well, for me, I also have that
- 11:28Speaker 5: same type of spina bifida with all the letters. And
- 11:35Speaker 5: for me, I started walking about three or four. I
- 11:40Speaker 5: went from from what I can remember, from crawling to
- 11:45Speaker 5: pulling myself up on things and and going from there.
- 11:50Speaker 5: I had to wear like a baby diaper until like
- 11:54Speaker 5: maybe third yeah, third grade because of the incontinence and
- 12:00Speaker 5: things of that nature. And it has definitely been a challenge.
- 12:07Speaker 5: School has been crazy. So Shannon, my question you, does
- 12:14Speaker 5: Madicine have to deal with being bullied and picked on
- 12:18Speaker 5: because of her circumstances?
- 12:21Speaker 3: Oh? So she hasn't in a while. I can't recall
- 12:26Speaker 3: in her younger grade years.
- 12:29Speaker 2: I remember, I.
- 12:31Speaker 5: Want to say, in kindergarten is maybe when we first
- 12:33Speaker 5: noticed it and it wasn't more of like a bullying
- 12:36Speaker 5: issue it would be. I think one time a little
- 12:40Speaker 5: boy like she was going up the letter to go
- 12:43Speaker 5: down the slide, and a little boy like kind of
- 12:46Speaker 5: pushed her out the way and went in front of
- 12:47Speaker 5: her because she said she was taken too long, but
- 12:50Speaker 5: you know, physically it just took her longer to get
- 12:52Speaker 5: up the letter.
- 12:52Speaker 3: So things like that, I think her biggest things have been,
- 12:56Speaker 3: like phil.
- 12:56Speaker 5: Day has not always been fun for her, especially a
- 13:00Speaker 5: fifty days where they give awards.
- 13:03Speaker 3: And she had issues again.
- 13:07Speaker 5: In her early years, she used to wear pull ups
- 13:10Speaker 5: to school as well, and some kids would ask her,
- 13:13Speaker 5: why do you still.
- 13:14Speaker 3: Having to pull up? I don't wear those anymore.
- 13:16Speaker 5: So things like that, but not She was in a
- 13:20Speaker 5: bullying incident in the sixth grade, but it wasn't spinning.
- 13:23Speaker 3: It was just young girls and.
- 13:27Speaker 5: And yeah, so it wasn't spinning a bit of related,
- 13:30Speaker 5: but most of hers have just been because she does
- 13:33Speaker 5: things a little slower, or when she did used to
- 13:36Speaker 5: wear her pull.
- 13:36Speaker 3: Ups and things to school.
- 13:37Speaker 5: So, okay, since she had her surgery, you not have
- 13:42Speaker 5: to wear those anymore. No, so she stopped wearing the
- 13:48Speaker 5: pull ups to school. I would probably say second or
- 13:53Speaker 5: third grade.
- 13:54Speaker 3: It was the fourth grade. She's say in fourth grade.
- 13:57Speaker 3: She probably would know better than I would, so no.
- 14:02Speaker 5: So now with the surgery, nothing really changed besides how
- 14:10Speaker 5: often she cathorizes, and she no longer takes the bladder
- 14:16Speaker 5: medications that she were taking. Okay, so it seems like
- 14:22Speaker 5: it helps you a lot of ways.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Well that's good, Madison.
- 14:27Speaker 5: I want to say to you, you are a beautiful
- 14:30Speaker 5: little girl. And you know, life in itself is hard,
- 14:39Speaker 5: but you have the capability of doing and becoming whoever
- 14:43Speaker 5: you desire to be. So you know, no matter what
- 14:48Speaker 5: it looks like or even if you feel like you're
- 14:52Speaker 5: different from everybody else, you're beautiful and.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Disky's the limit for you.
- 14:57Speaker 5: So I want you to take that and walk with
- 15:01Speaker 5: it and keep your head up high because you're beautiful baby.
- 15:08Speaker 3: Yeah, and remember.
- 15:13Speaker 6: Remember always and this is what I used to quote
- 15:18Speaker 6: to myself and I still do. But I can do
- 15:21Speaker 6: all things through Christ Jesus. That strengthens me. Remember that
- 15:27Speaker 6: your final that does not define you, and it does
- 15:33Speaker 6: not control who you are.
- 15:40Speaker 3: I do have a question.
- 15:41Speaker 2: You got question?
- 15:43Speaker 7: Yeah, I got a question for Shannon. How is it
- 15:46Speaker 7: being a mother of a child from a mother's perspective?
- 15:51Speaker 2: Who?
- 15:52Speaker 5: That's a lovely question. So, but a little backstory. When
- 15:59Speaker 5: I found that I was pretty well manned. I was
- 16:01Speaker 5: twenty one in college, so you're talking about I already
- 16:05Speaker 5: feel like I screwed up because I'm in school, and
- 16:09Speaker 5: then I find out four months later like your whole
- 16:12Speaker 5: life has changed.
- 16:13Speaker 3: So of course it started out scary.
- 16:17Speaker 5: I think the biggest thing for me is I've had
- 16:19Speaker 5: like a very very good support system, but I think
- 16:25Speaker 5: the early years were a lot harder because I just
- 16:27Speaker 5: didn't know.
- 16:29Speaker 3: So it's like, every time we had an appointment, I
- 16:31Speaker 3: felt like they were saying something else. I'm like, look, yeah,
- 16:33Speaker 3: I'm men, tell me this last time. Yeah.
- 16:38Speaker 5: So I think I think her early years were a
- 16:41Speaker 5: lot harder. But the older she gets, I don't want
- 16:46Speaker 5: to say it gets easier. I think I just find
- 16:49Speaker 5: a way to it just better. And you know, it's
- 16:53Speaker 5: one of those things like I gotta stay strong.
- 16:56Speaker 3: If I'm worried, She's gonna worry, right.
- 16:58Speaker 5: So a lot of times I still freaking. I'm like,
- 17:02Speaker 5: what what's happening, Let's go get your stuff.
- 17:04Speaker 3: We got to go to the doctor, and she'd be like, Mama,
- 17:06Speaker 3: I'm fine.
- 17:07Speaker 5: So it's been it's been difficult, but there has been
- 17:11Speaker 5: a lot of joyous times because I've been allowed to
- 17:14Speaker 5: like see God work, you know, in ways that I
- 17:18Speaker 5: probably would have never seen had I, you know, birth
- 17:21Speaker 5: this little miracle baby. So there has been a lot
- 17:25Speaker 5: of difficult a lot of hospital stays, you know, a
- 17:33Speaker 5: lot of blaming myself somewhere in there, you know.
- 17:37Speaker 3: But I think for the.
- 17:38Speaker 5: Most part, I've learned a lot from it and i'm,
- 17:41Speaker 5: you know, still learning. It's not over, so yeah, but
- 17:45Speaker 5: it's it's been a lot of joy in that too.
- 17:47Speaker 7: And the doctor to scare you do it's not necessarily
- 17:52Speaker 7: the truth, you know. And I'm glad that you were
- 17:55Speaker 7: able to keep your child and see that God can
- 17:59Speaker 7: do anything. And I mean she is she is beautiful.
- 18:05Speaker 7: I love that girl. She's my sister. So it's like
- 18:08Speaker 7: you just see God doing what he do and do.
- 18:11Speaker 7: They don't know everything God knows, and like said, she
- 18:15Speaker 7: can be anything or whatever you want to be, whatever
- 18:18Speaker 7: she wanted to.
- 18:18Speaker 3: As long as you put your mind to.
- 18:19Speaker 7: My mom used to always say, as long as you
- 18:21Speaker 7: put your mind to, when you can do whatever you
- 18:23Speaker 7: want to do.
- 18:23Speaker 2: In life and can't nobody stop you.
- 18:28Speaker 3: That's right.
- 18:30Speaker 5: Yeah, Shannon, if you don't mind, could you explain the
- 18:35Speaker 5: surgery that she recently had. M So it was kind
- 18:40Speaker 5: of bladder augmentation, uh, But essentially what they did was
- 18:43Speaker 5: they went in and took part of her intestines and
- 18:47Speaker 5: attached it to her bladder to make her bladder larger.
- 18:51Speaker 5: So before she had the surgery, I don't remember the
- 18:55Speaker 5: exact numbers, but if I was to guess, I think
- 18:59Speaker 5: she was.
- 19:00Speaker 3: Only holding.
- 19:04Speaker 5: Like her bladder was the size of it was still
- 19:07Speaker 5: the size of like a two year old baby.
- 19:11Speaker 3: Trying to hold yurine. So after the surgery and the
- 19:13Speaker 3: way that they elarged it, now she holds three times
- 19:17Speaker 3: more than the average okay, which can be a.
- 19:20Speaker 5: Good bath because it can hold so much that she's fine.
- 19:26Speaker 5: And six hours later it's like, oh, crap, I forgot
- 19:29Speaker 5: to go to the bathroom because it wasn't bother me,
- 19:33Speaker 5: but to the surgery yet, So they took part of
- 19:35Speaker 5: her intestants, they enlarged her bladder.
- 19:38Speaker 3: She was hospitalized for a week. It was a six
- 19:41Speaker 3: hour surgery.
- 19:43Speaker 5: And I think that's that back to the question about
- 19:46Speaker 5: being a parent's final b if.
- 19:47Speaker 3: I think that's the hardest part of sitting in the
- 19:48Speaker 3: waiting room trying to figure out what y'all doing back
- 19:51Speaker 3: there to my baby?
- 19:51Speaker 2: What is how she doing?
- 19:53Speaker 3: Can somebody come tell me? Can I just look through
- 19:54Speaker 3: a window?
- 19:57Speaker 5: So it was a six hour surgery that kept her
- 19:59Speaker 5: in the hospital for She came home with drainage tubes
- 20:04Speaker 5: and her belly and.
- 20:05Speaker 3: In her her bladder.
- 20:10Speaker 5: And she kept those for a week, and she also
- 20:15Speaker 5: had staples that she kept for two weeks. So the
- 20:17Speaker 5: way that they did the surgery is they ended up
- 20:19Speaker 5: opening her as if she had a cesarean. She has
- 20:23Speaker 5: a bikini cut. They were going to do it the
- 20:27Speaker 5: vertical way just because he said he needed more space
- 20:32Speaker 5: to go in or you know, do what he needed
- 20:34Speaker 5: to do.
- 20:34Speaker 3: But they came out of surgery and said.
- 20:37Speaker 5: We were able to do a bikini cut because by
- 20:39Speaker 5: the time we put her on the table, she was
- 20:40Speaker 5: so tiny that I can get in there and do
- 20:43Speaker 5: what I needed to do. So yeah, it was like
- 20:45Speaker 5: a bikini cut.
- 20:46Speaker 2: But the.
- 20:48Speaker 5: Main reason for the surgery was because she was having
- 20:50Speaker 5: a lot of bladder leakage, getting a lot of ut
- 20:53Speaker 5: eyes just because her bladder was so small and it
- 20:56Speaker 5: was holding on in so much bacteria that kept reflecting
- 20:59Speaker 5: into her keys, knees, and she kept She had about
- 21:04Speaker 5: three or four runs with sis and so finally it was.
- 21:07Speaker 3: Doctor said okay, so it's time. So yeah, yeps for
- 21:13Speaker 3: like three years, so we finally said.
- 21:15Speaker 5: Yes, miss Donne, you said that you don't have a shunt.
- 21:23Speaker 5: How how how did they go past not having to
- 21:30Speaker 5: give you one.
- 21:32Speaker 6: Or do you know, I really don't know, but well,
- 21:37Speaker 6: let me just explain. Because by my parents believing in
- 21:41Speaker 6: God mm hmm, they prayed about the situituation, you know,
- 21:50Speaker 6: and that what they was telling my parents was I
- 21:55Speaker 6: needed this shunt or else I was going to die
- 21:59Speaker 6: in three days. They gave me three days to live, okay,
- 22:04Speaker 6: but they was explaining to them that, you know, as
- 22:09Speaker 6: I grow, they're gonna have to you know, keep placing
- 22:13Speaker 6: a shunt in, you know, and they was telling them
- 22:16Speaker 6: about the side effects and all of that different kind
- 22:19Speaker 6: of stuff. And my my mom just simply asked, God,
- 22:25Speaker 6: you know, either hello from that.
- 22:30Speaker 2: Or take our.
- 22:30Speaker 6: Home with with you, because I guess she just didn't
- 22:35Speaker 6: want to see me suffer. And that's a lot on
- 22:39Speaker 6: a child to keep, you know, going in and you know,
- 22:46Speaker 6: placing shunts in their head as they grow. So, you know,
- 22:51Speaker 6: my my parents just believed in God.
- 22:55Speaker 2: They didn't want that to happen.
- 22:57Speaker 6: And so I my parents took me to church and
- 23:02Speaker 6: they prayed over me, and there was no sign of
- 23:06Speaker 6: hydrocephalis that even though they still say I do have
- 23:11Speaker 6: like water in the brain, but it's not where it
- 23:15Speaker 6: affects me where I would need an emergency surgery. It's
- 23:21Speaker 6: like it's no build up, it's a little, just a little.
- 23:27Speaker 5: So you said, okay, and Shanny you said that Maddie
- 23:34Speaker 5: also has a shunt.
- 23:35Speaker 3: She has a VP since she was a week old.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Okay.
- 23:42Speaker 5: Yeah, I've had mine since since birth and I've never
- 23:47Speaker 5: had to have a revision that I'm aware of.
- 23:50Speaker 2: So and.
- 23:54Speaker 3: We've had some scares, but every time we get there
- 23:58Speaker 3: and they do like a thorough check, it's like, okay,
- 24:00Speaker 3: it's not this, She's fine here. So she's never had
- 24:03Speaker 3: a revision.
- 24:04Speaker 5: There was a point where they did think that it
- 24:07Speaker 5: was time to remove it because they didn't show much usage.
- 24:12Speaker 5: But I actually had her nerves surgeon that said, I
- 24:15Speaker 5: wouldn't advise that she's you know, she told me she removed,
- 24:18Speaker 5: you know, a shunt and it just didn't go well
- 24:22Speaker 5: for that particular kid. So she just said, if it's
- 24:24Speaker 5: not bothering her, just leave it alone, right, And she
- 24:28Speaker 5: she never had any issues with it, So I don't
- 24:31Speaker 5: I don't fully know if she's using it now. They
- 24:33Speaker 5: do check it every year, but she hasn't had hasn't
- 24:38Speaker 5: had to have a revision.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Okay, Diddy, there's a question.
- 24:44Speaker 5: I see that I call on you because I know
- 24:48Speaker 5: you have a brother that yes, so you may be
- 24:52Speaker 5: able to.
- 24:54Speaker 7: I mean, I don't know if it's prevalent in either
- 24:58Speaker 7: or sex. But for my my background, because my family
- 25:02Speaker 7: is from Haiti, and I think that it was a
- 25:06Speaker 7: genetic thing for us because my parents had had me first,
- 25:12Speaker 7: then they have my other brother who doesn't have anything
- 25:15Speaker 7: wrong with him, and then they have another brother who
- 25:17Speaker 7: has the same exact spine fit for that I have.
- 25:20Speaker 7: So I think it's a genetic genetic thing. I really
- 25:23Speaker 7: believe it's prevalent in Haiti, but I don't know in
- 25:26Speaker 7: other cultures if how prevalent it is for.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Men or women.
- 25:30Speaker 7: But I mean being on social media, you see both.
- 25:34Speaker 7: You see both men and women, you know, so it's
- 25:38Speaker 7: not I don't think it's a higher risk on any sex.
- 25:41Speaker 7: To be honest with you, I don't believe it.
- 25:44Speaker 5: And I will say when I had my son, they
- 25:48Speaker 5: wanted to have him tested for everything. But when I
- 25:50Speaker 5: take her to her Spinea Bee for the events, it's
- 25:53Speaker 5: like equal across the board. There's just as many young boys.
- 25:58Speaker 3: So that that's what I would believe.
- 25:59Speaker 8: Yeah, Okay, I think women just like the the event,
- 26:09Speaker 8: the events that you take her to, do you know
- 26:13Speaker 8: that's everywhere.
- 26:15Speaker 5: Or is that just spepecific for Texas. So the one
- 26:21Speaker 5: that we are a part of it is called the
- 26:23Speaker 5: Spina Bit of the Association of North Texas. I don't
- 26:27Speaker 5: know if they have them anywhere else, but she's been
- 26:29Speaker 5: a part of it, oh since she was I think
- 26:32Speaker 5: we went to the first event when she was one.
- 26:33Speaker 3: They do Christmas parties, Easter.
- 26:35Speaker 5: Egg hunts, they have a family camp that they do
- 26:38Speaker 5: every November, but then they age out of the family
- 26:41Speaker 5: camp and they go to the summer.
- 26:42Speaker 3: Camp where it's just kids, counselors, doctors, and nurses.
- 26:47Speaker 5: So they do a lot. They have a Spina Bit
- 26:49Speaker 5: to walk every year. So she's been doing all of
- 26:52Speaker 5: that ever since.
- 26:52Speaker 3: She was two. Wow, that's awesome. That's really great.
- 26:59Speaker 5: Yeah, So what I want to say to you now, Shannon,
- 27:03Speaker 5: is there anything that you don't know about Spina Bit
- 27:09Speaker 5: that either either of us could say to you that.
- 27:14Speaker 2: You know, would help you along along the way with her.
- 27:21Speaker 5: I'm sure there's a lot that I know.
- 27:28Speaker 3: I think.
- 27:32Speaker 5: My biggest don't know moments with her is how do
- 27:35Speaker 5: you feel about it? Right? Even with school, like, how
- 27:40Speaker 5: do you feel going to school?
- 27:42Speaker 3: You know, do you feel different?
- 27:46Speaker 5: Because Madison is pretty quiet and she will she to
- 27:49Speaker 5: you every everything's okay, mama, You're.
- 27:52Speaker 3: Doing everything right, and it's okay.
- 27:54Speaker 5: I'm fine, I'm great, I'm happy, and that they could
- 27:57Speaker 5: they could honestly be the case. But yeah, so I
- 28:01Speaker 5: don't know how to break through to her to say
- 28:05Speaker 5: open up.
- 28:06Speaker 3: But I don't know. Maybe it'll come and do time.
- 28:10Speaker 5: But Spina beff Spina Biffita specifically, Yeah, I'm a researcher
- 28:15Speaker 5: and that just comes from being in school, and then
- 28:17Speaker 5: i'm you know, I teach at the school, so I
- 28:20Speaker 5: research a lot a lot of stuff, and then I
- 28:24Speaker 5: talked to a lot of people, you know, like you
- 28:26Speaker 5: guys and y'all know. I don't mind asking questions, but
- 28:31Speaker 5: I can't think of anything at this moment. A lot
- 28:34Speaker 5: of my questions arise when something with her is different, right,
- 28:38Speaker 5: and I'm like, we ain't never had this symptom with this, Yeah,
- 28:42Speaker 5: I know, I'm text d D before.
- 28:44Speaker 3: And I'm like, the doctor said this, have you heard
- 28:46Speaker 3: of this? You know, things like that.
- 28:48Speaker 5: So a lot of minds come from when they present
- 28:50Speaker 5: something to me that I've never heard. But I'm also
- 28:55Speaker 5: a part of like a like the Spina Bitch from
- 28:57Speaker 5: North Texas group here. They have a mom's group on Facebook,
- 29:00Speaker 5: and so moms would like just throw out questions or
- 29:03Speaker 5: saying I went to the doctor and you know, they
- 29:05Speaker 5: told me this, and so I learned a lot of
- 29:07Speaker 5: stuff that they can too. So I honestly can't think
- 29:11Speaker 5: of anything at this moment outside of how do I
- 29:16Speaker 5: make sure my baby is okay?
- 29:20Speaker 2: So as a mom, I will say.
- 29:24Speaker 5: Just keeping the lines of communication open, being available when
- 29:32Speaker 5: she needs you, being able to listen, not to answer,
- 29:40Speaker 5: just be a listening ear. Yeah, yeah, yeah, definitely. School
- 29:47Speaker 5: for me was hard, Like if I could have been
- 29:49Speaker 5: a third grade dropout, I would have been doing yeah,
- 29:54Speaker 5: And like you know, it's he is a cruel and
- 29:58Speaker 5: these kids, you know, yeah, they're different, and you.
- 30:05Speaker 2: Know it's it's not fair to go to school to.
- 30:11Speaker 5: Try to get an education and you have to worry
- 30:14Speaker 5: about if you're going to have an accident or if
- 30:17Speaker 5: somebody's gonna pick on you. And see for me, I
- 30:20Speaker 5: walk funny, so they so they tell me I don't.
- 30:25Speaker 5: So you know, I've always had people like walking behind me.
- 30:31Speaker 2: Copying the way that.
- 30:32Speaker 5: I walk, and you know, you can't see that something's
- 30:36Speaker 5: wrong because it's you, you know. So I'm like, I
- 30:41Speaker 5: couldn't understand, for the loved goud why I had to
- 30:45Speaker 5: get picked on so much. And I think that's, yeah,
- 30:53Speaker 5: I applied. I think that's the mother that you are,
- 30:56Speaker 5: Thank you man, And I think that's what One of
- 31:00Speaker 5: my biggest things too, is Maddie, Like, if I don't
- 31:03Speaker 5: tell somebody.
- 31:04Speaker 3: She has, they don't know, right, And.
- 31:09Speaker 5: We're grateful for that, but I think sometimes it puts
- 31:15Speaker 5: her like in.
- 31:15Speaker 3: A gray area, right, she always becomes that outlier.
- 31:19Speaker 5: So she looks just like you, but she struggles with
- 31:23Speaker 5: these things, and so I'm hard on her in regards
- 31:28Speaker 5: to her independence because I'm like, you know, you know
- 31:35Speaker 5: the things that you need to do, and other kids
- 31:38Speaker 5: they don't know and they don't care. So you know,
- 31:41Speaker 5: you need to go to the bathroom and take care
- 31:42Speaker 5: of your business. Go to the bathroom and take care
- 31:45Speaker 5: of your friends business. Your friend's still gonna be sitting
- 31:47Speaker 5: at the cafeteria table right when you get right now,
- 31:51Speaker 5: she's had gratefully, Maddie has had friends in fifth, sixth,
- 31:56Speaker 5: and seventh grade who will whisper to her, I think
- 31:59Speaker 5: you had an accident, and she'll go to the bathroom
- 32:03Speaker 5: and take care of business.
- 32:04Speaker 3: But that's not always the case. She's been to a
- 32:07Speaker 3: birthday party and they in the bounce house and somebody's like, ooh,
- 32:10Speaker 3: what's that. It's sinks in here, and.
- 32:12Speaker 5: She's had an accident, but they don't understand, and you
- 32:16Speaker 5: know it doesn't bother her. But I'm like, stay on
- 32:19Speaker 5: top of it because you know, I don't want you
- 32:22Speaker 5: to be in that position. So well, I'm going to
- 32:27Speaker 5: support Maddie and I'm gonna say, listen, I fully understand it,
- 32:31Speaker 5: because you want to be as normal as possible. So
- 32:34Speaker 5: I I fully understand that you're like, I don't want
- 32:38Speaker 5: to be kind to go to bath you know, it's
- 32:40Speaker 5: a struggle at at our young age.
- 32:43Speaker 7: We know we're supposed to do it, but we want
- 32:45Speaker 7: to be normal, you know. So it's kind of hard
- 32:48Speaker 7: to like. But I mean, I understand telling her and
- 32:51Speaker 7: she gets it, but she's like, why can't be normal?
- 32:54Speaker 7: Type scenario? You know what I'm saying. Yeah, with you
- 32:56Speaker 7: just feeling at her and talking to her, that helped
- 33:00Speaker 7: her because for me, I always carried on like I'm
- 33:04Speaker 7: good when in an actuality I wasn't. Yeah, so it's
- 33:09Speaker 7: good that you're keeping that communication because nobody would have
- 33:11Speaker 7: been able to tell.
- 33:12Speaker 2: For me, Madison is quiet.
- 33:14Speaker 3: I was not quiet, you know what I'm saying.
- 33:16Speaker 7: So everybody thought I was good when the actualety I wasn't.
- 33:21Speaker 7: So I get what Madison is same.
- 33:23Speaker 3: But she don't want I don't want to have to
- 33:25Speaker 3: keep going. My friends is over here.
- 33:27Speaker 2: But yeah, and she.
- 33:29Speaker 7: Gets old that she's gonna realize I gotta do this
- 33:31Speaker 7: and she's gonna set herself up. But I understand it.
- 33:35Speaker 7: I get it. Yeah, I get at that young age,
- 33:37Speaker 7: you just want to be like everybody else.
- 33:39Speaker 3: Yeah, and that's.
- 33:40Speaker 2: Hard to be a kid.
- 33:43Speaker 3: And yeah, basically, yeah, that we started this.
- 33:48Speaker 5: Thing a couple months back, just because I know she's
- 33:52Speaker 5: not a talker in regards to stuff like that.
- 33:56Speaker 3: And so I said, okay, so on a sheet of paper, write.
- 33:58Speaker 5: Down everything you want to say to me, and you
- 34:01Speaker 5: can give it to me and say, Mamma, don't read
- 34:02Speaker 5: this till you get to work, or read this when
- 34:04Speaker 5: I go to school. And I'm like, you know it
- 34:07Speaker 5: can be you know the way that you said this
- 34:10Speaker 5: to me made me feel like this, Right, whatever you
- 34:13Speaker 5: don't feel like you can verbally say to me, write
- 34:16Speaker 5: it to me. And so I think the very first
- 34:20Speaker 5: letter had me interiors at work, but it was helpful, right.
- 34:25Speaker 5: So we try to find ways to where, you know,
- 34:29Speaker 5: we can communicate. And I've noticed over the past few
- 34:32Speaker 5: months like she started to verbally open up about some
- 34:35Speaker 5: things that she wouldn't have.
- 34:38Speaker 3: Last year. So I think we're getting somewhere.
- 34:41Speaker 7: As long as you keep that lot of communication open,
- 34:44Speaker 7: she knows she can come to mommy, and and that's
- 34:48Speaker 7: a blessing in itself.
- 34:49Speaker 3: I'm not saying I didn't have.
- 34:50Speaker 7: That, but I, you know, didn't want to put that
- 34:53Speaker 7: weight on my mom you know what I'm saying, because
- 34:55Speaker 7: she was already taken care of me and all the
- 34:58Speaker 7: other stuff, So I didn't want to put that weight
- 35:00Speaker 7: on her. But for you to have that communication with
- 35:02Speaker 7: her is a blessing. I'm telling y'all, both my heroes,
- 35:05Speaker 7: both of y'all.
- 35:09Speaker 6: Absolutely, it's a blessing to have parents. It's a blessing
- 35:16Speaker 6: to have parents that is very supportive family as well,
- 35:22Speaker 6: you know, because I have a great support of family,
- 35:26Speaker 6: and honestly them no people that I trust, you know,
- 35:34Speaker 6: especially when when you're dealing with bladder issues in my case,
- 35:42Speaker 6: I've had, I've been teased all my life, but it
- 35:48Speaker 6: still goes on and I'm adult. You know, people is
- 35:52Speaker 6: just crueling and ignorant and that kind of makes me
- 35:57Speaker 6: not one. It kind of makes me not want to date.
- 36:02Speaker 6: You get what I'm saying.
- 36:04Speaker 7: Because of that situation.
- 36:06Speaker 2: I'm like, I'm cool, but let let Jesus Christ be.
- 36:12Speaker 6: You know, that's the type of attitude that I have,
- 36:15Speaker 6: because I mean, you show me your attitude.
- 36:19Speaker 2: I'm gonna show you.
- 36:20Speaker 6: Man, I'm gonna trust God.
- 36:23Speaker 3: You know.
- 36:24Speaker 6: It's differ and so I'm still dealing with it.
- 36:28Speaker 7: Yes, it's difficult to explain. It's difficult to have to
- 36:31Speaker 7: explained because when you see me, you don't know the
- 36:33Speaker 7: inner of me. So yes, approach that situation of explaining, well,
- 36:39Speaker 7: I have this I deal with and I have this
- 36:40Speaker 7: ideal with that's a little that's that's a little hard
- 36:44Speaker 7: to kind of do.
- 36:45Speaker 2: Yeah, it is, Yeah, I get it. It is so
- 36:52Speaker 2: with me.
- 36:53Speaker 5: I I I deal with abandonment issues because I was
- 36:57Speaker 5: adopted in things of that nature. So now when I
- 37:01Speaker 5: meet new people, I lead with with everything. I have
- 37:08Speaker 5: spina benefita, I have hydrocephalus, I had an ulcer on
- 37:12Speaker 5: my gun and I had.
- 37:13Speaker 2: To have all my teeth removed. I show.
- 37:17Speaker 5: I mean, the only way you're going to get to
- 37:20Speaker 5: know the real need is for me to be able to.
- 37:23Speaker 2: I mean, here's the thing.
- 37:25Speaker 5: If they're gonna run, they're gonna run. But if they're
- 37:28Speaker 5: gonna stay, they're definitely gonna stay. And nothing that goes
- 37:32Speaker 5: on with you will make them run. So you know,
- 37:35Speaker 5: I don't I don't hide nothing from nobody no more,
- 37:38Speaker 5: because I mean, I just anymore.
- 37:42Speaker 2: Either. But I think what miss Billy come out, what really.
- 37:47Speaker 6: Made me come out of my shelle mm hmm, it
- 37:54Speaker 6: is when I started this my YouTube channel, and uh
- 38:03Speaker 6: so when I started, you know, talking about spina biffea
- 38:09Speaker 6: and things like that. Now I'm very blunt, like, Okay,
- 38:13Speaker 6: I have this problem because of spina biffida, and then
- 38:18Speaker 6: I find ways to help others that is going through
- 38:20Speaker 6: like leakage. You know, sometimes we can't find the hygiene
- 38:25Speaker 6: products in the regular stories. We can't use that because
- 38:29Speaker 6: it'll knock off our pH balance. So what can we
- 38:34Speaker 6: find to help our pH balance in our hygiene you know, so, I,
- 38:41Speaker 6: you know, review different products, and now I found something
- 38:44Speaker 6: that would that really helps me, you know so, And
- 38:48Speaker 6: and then I show them what's in my bag?
- 38:51Speaker 2: What do I carry in my bag? I may have
- 38:59Speaker 2: to share that I can share right now.
- 39:07Speaker 7: I can share right now?
- 39:08Speaker 2: Are you? I was low me? LOOI has helped me
- 39:13Speaker 2: a lot.
- 39:14Speaker 6: Oh wow.
- 39:15Speaker 2: And it actually.
- 39:18Speaker 6: Lasts for seventy two hours, even though I still take
- 39:21Speaker 6: my showers. I'm not gonna test it, but from what
- 39:25Speaker 6: I've from what I've I've experienced with Looie, Wow, it's
- 39:33Speaker 6: like twelve hours after I took my shower, I still
- 39:37Speaker 6: smell good. Even when I start, you know, self capitalizing myself,
- 39:44Speaker 6: I still smell good.
- 39:47Speaker 2: Listen to pull it up. You know what I'm saying.
- 39:52Speaker 5: Yeah, use a lot of over the counter stuff because
- 40:02Speaker 5: it irritates bacteria.
- 40:06Speaker 3: So that's something I'm struggling with.
- 40:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm trying.
- 40:11Speaker 6: It worked no problem because you know, I wear pull ups,
- 40:16Speaker 6: you know, and when it gets hot outside and you know,
- 40:20Speaker 6: it's all sweaty and stuff, you can smell it. But
- 40:26Speaker 6: loom has blocked that. Like it blocks the older. It
- 40:29Speaker 6: doesn't hide the older. It actually blocks the older. And
- 40:34Speaker 6: the person that evented evented that uh it's actually uh
- 40:39Speaker 6: o be gang.
- 40:43Speaker 2: So I was happy about that.
- 40:49Speaker 3: I'm questioning that.
- 40:50Speaker 2: I thought about it. In closing, I was gonna tell.
- 41:00Speaker 5: Miss Done if you can I know that you crochet.
- 41:05Speaker 2: Do you sell your work?
- 41:07Speaker 5: Oh?
- 41:07Speaker 6: Yeah, I sure do?
- 41:12Speaker 2: Yes? How can people find you? How can people find you?
- 41:17Speaker 7: I show my work on YouTube.
- 41:21Speaker 6: I also have a TikTok that's I slay spin a
- 41:26Speaker 6: bit for that as well, and Facebook and also Instagram
- 41:35Speaker 6: I'm blessed seventy eight eight, so that's how. And you
- 41:43Speaker 6: know I also sell it.
- 41:46Speaker 3: Your link.
- 41:50Speaker 6: Post my link in a chat. I don't know if
- 41:55Speaker 6: I can do. Let me see if not?
- 41:59Speaker 5: Right now when we get yeah, you can go back
- 42:03Speaker 5: and do the comments.
- 42:05Speaker 2: Yeah, and I'll tag you so that you're able to.
- 42:11Speaker 2: But yeah, I'll do that. How can we.
- 42:15Speaker 6: Not a problem?
- 42:17Speaker 3: How can you?
- 42:18Speaker 2: How can we help Maddie? What can we do to
- 42:22Speaker 2: support Mattie?
- 42:25Speaker 3: I don't know, man, what what? What? What? What can
- 42:28Speaker 3: they do to support you?
- 42:35Speaker 5: Can they like answer questions that you're not comfortable asking me?
- 42:47Speaker 7: Regardless?
- 42:51Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 42:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I would just.
- 42:52Speaker 5: Say keep sharing because a lot of stuff, like I said,
- 42:56Speaker 5: I learned through through platforms like this because because she's
- 43:01Speaker 5: young to a lot of stuff I don't know. Yeah,
- 43:03Speaker 5: and it's it's good to know, you know.
- 43:05Speaker 3: What adult hood may be like for her, So keep sharing,
- 43:10Speaker 3: keep answering all my questions.
- 43:12Speaker 2: Even we got onto you know, I got you.
- 43:16Speaker 7: We got you, regardless of whatever you want to know,
- 43:18Speaker 7: we got we got wet. We didn't have this type
- 43:23Speaker 7: of system when we were growing up, so to have
- 43:25Speaker 7: somebody else to give.
- 43:26Speaker 6: No, we did.
- 43:27Speaker 7: That's a blessing and a testimony for us.
- 43:31Speaker 2: So oh, whatever you need.
- 43:33Speaker 7: Any time of the day, you let us know, and
- 43:36Speaker 7: we got appreciated.
- 43:39Speaker 5: It does not even matter, that's right. We absolutely adore you.
- 43:47Speaker 5: And I intended to wear my my Maddy T shirt.
- 43:52Speaker 2: But the weather is but she grew out of her camp.
