- 0:48She's a happy girl.
- 1:03God's desire is for us to live lives of obedience, not only to glorify Him,
- 1:09but also to protect us and guide us toward what is truly best and safest for our lives.
- 1:16When we read the laws of the Old Testament, we may wonder how they really apply to us today.
- 1:22But when we dig deep enough, we always find God's heart of protection for His
- 1:27people woven throughout.
- 1:29Join us in this episode of the Woman at the Well Ministries podcast as Erica
- 1:34Close teaches from Deuteronomy chapter 5, focusing on verse 29.
- 1:40Oh, that there were such an heart in them that they would fear me and keep all
- 1:45my commandments always, that it might be well with them and with their children forever.
- 1:51Thank you all so much for joining us in this podcast of Woman at the Well Ministries.
- 1:57It is such a joy to share with you out of the book of Deuteronomy.
- 2:01I'm so thankful that we get to live on this side of the cross,
- 2:06but there are so many life lessons in the Old Testament that have spoken to
- 2:12my heart for years, and so I am so thankful that I get to share some of those with you today.
- 2:18So today we are in Deuteronomy chapter 5, and while we're focusing on Deuteronomy
- 2:245.29, we're going to go ahead and read all of Deuteronomy chapter 5.
- 2:30So that's verses 1 to 33.
- 2:35And Moses called all Israel and said unto them, Hear, O Israel,
- 2:39the statutes and judgments which I speak in your ears this day,
- 2:44that ye may learn them and keep and do them.
- 2:47The Lord our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.
- 2:51The Lord made not this covenant with our fathers, but with us,
- 2:55even us, who are all of us here alive this day.
- 2:59The Lord talked with you face to face in the mount out of the midst of the fire.
- 3:04I stood between the Lord and you at that time to show you the word of the Lord,
- 3:08for ye were afraid by reason of the fire, and went not up into the mount,
- 3:13saying, I am the Lord thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt from the house of bondage.
- 3:19Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
- 3:22Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that
- 3:27is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth.
- 3:32Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them.
- 3:36For I, the Lord thy God, am a jealous God, visiting iniquity upon the fathers
- 3:41of the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me,
- 3:46and showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.
- 3:51Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain, for the Lord will
- 3:56not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
- 4:00Keep the Sabbath day to sanctify it, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee.
- 4:05Six days thou shalt labor, and
- 4:07do all thy work. But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God.
- 4:12In it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter,
- 4:18nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle,
- 4:25nor thy stranger that is within thy
- 4:27gates, that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou.
- 4:32And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the Lord
- 4:36thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched-out arm.
- 4:41Therefore the Lord thy God commanded thee to keep the Sabbath day.
- 4:46Honor thy father and thy mother, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee,
- 4:50that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee in the land
- 4:55which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
- 4:57Thou shalt not kill, neither shalt thou commit adultery, neither shalt thou
- 5:03steal, neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbor.
- 5:07Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbor's wife, neither shalt thou covet thy
- 5:12neighbor's house, his field, his manservant, or his maidservant,
- 5:17his ox, his ass, or anything that is in thy neighbor's.
- 5:22These words the Lord spake unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst
- 5:27of the fire of the cloud and of the thick darkness with a great voice, and he added no more.
- 5:33And he wrote them in two tables of stone, and delivered them unto me.
- 5:39And it came to pass, when ye heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness,
- 5:43for the mountain did burn with fire, that ye came near unto me,
- 5:47even all the heads of your tribes and your elders.
- 5:51And ye said, Behold, the Lord our God has showed us his glory and his greatness,
- 5:55and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire.
- 5:59We have seen this day that God doth talk with man, and he liveth.
- 6:05Now, therefore, why should we die? For this great fire will consume us.
- 6:10If we hear the voice of the Lord our God any more, then we shall die.
- 6:15For who is there of all flesh that hath heard the voice of the living God speaking
- 6:21out of the midst of the fire as we have and lived.
- 6:26Go thou near, and hear all that the Lord our God shall say, and speak thou unto
- 6:31us all that the Lord our God shall speak unto thee, and we will hear it, and do it.
- 6:37And the Lord heard the voice of your words when ye spake unto me,
- 6:41and the Lord said unto me, I have heard the voice of the words of this people,
- 6:46which they have spoken unto thee.
- 6:48They have well said all that they have spoken. Oh, that there were such an heart.
- 6:53In them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always,
- 6:58that it might be well with them and with their children forever.
- 7:02Go say to them, Get you into your tents again.
- 7:06But as for thee, stand thou here by me, and I will speak unto thee all the commandments,
- 7:11and the statutes, and the judgments, which thou shalt teach them,
- 7:16that they may do them in the land which I give them to possess it.
- 7:19Ye shall observe to do therefore as the Lord your God hath commanded you.
- 7:25Ye shall not turn aside to the right or to the left.
- 7:28Ye shall walk in the ways which the Lord your God hath commanded you that ye
- 7:33may live and that it may be well with you and that ye may prolong your days
- 7:37in the land which ye shall possess.
- 7:40While the focus was on the importance of obedience in the last chapter of Deuteronomy, chapter 4.
- 7:46God now brings us into the first of the chapters in Deuteronomy where the law is just laid down.
- 7:54Don't be mistaken that this chapter is just a list of do's and don'ts.
- 7:58This chapter is rich in its revelation of God's heart and what he desires for
- 8:04his holy nation and for those who follow, including you and me.
- 8:10Chapter 5 of Deuteronomy opens up with a commemoration of the time at Horeb,
- 8:15also known as Mount Sinai or the mountain of the Lord.
- 8:18We read about that in Exodus 20 and verse 1, where the Lord gave Moses and the
- 8:23people the Ten Commandments.
- 8:26Moses reiterates that the covenant that was made with their forefathers still
- 8:30holds for the Israelites today, lest they think that they are not held to the
- 8:35covenants and the commandments that were given to the earlier generations.
- 8:39Moses also reminds them that God Himself spoke to the Israelites,
- 8:43giving them the Ten Commandments.
- 8:45In times past, one couldn't look upon God and live.
- 8:50With the giving of the Ten Commandments, God himself spoke these commandments
- 8:55specifically and personally for the Israelites and all of those that were to follow.
- 9:01Verses 6-22 of chapter 5 recounted the actual commandments themselves.
- 9:07But as Moses recounts the commandments, he elaborates on the person of God himself.
- 9:13God is the only true God, and there is no other God beside him.
- 9:18Because there is no other God, there is nothing else in this world that can
- 9:22be of more importance to us.
- 9:25Just as our God is fair and allows consequences for our actions,
- 9:30he is also merciful and his mercies are everlasting.
- 9:34Because they commemorate God himself, his name, and the Sabbath day are holy.
- 9:41They're not to be used or abused in any way that does not bring glory to God.
- 9:48Because we have a God who loves us and cares for us, He has given us rules to
- 9:53protect us from the sinful world that we live in.
- 9:56We're to honor and respect our parents. In the same way, our lives are to be
- 10:00lived in respect of others and the possessions that God has given them.
- 10:05Each and every one of us are created in the image and likeness of God.
- 10:09We must love and respect each other, because in doing so, we're loving and respecting God himself.
- 10:17As we move on to verse 24, we read of the Lord giving the commandments to the Israelites.
- 10:23The Israelites were so afraid of the voice that they had heard.
- 10:27And they told Moses that he should talk to God, but that they should hide away and not talk to them.
- 10:33But when we read that part, we come to a verse that totally reveals the heart of God.
- 10:39Verse 29 of chapter 5 reads, Oh, that there were such an heart in them that
- 10:45they would fear me and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well
- 10:50with them and with their children forever.
- 10:52Here we see God's greatest desire for His people.
- 10:56He doesn't want the people to be afraid of Him and His voice.
- 11:01No, God wants His people to fear Him out of love and respect.
- 11:06His desire is to be reverenced, not run from.
- 11:11This verse so displays the love that God has for his people.
- 11:15Instead of them running from him, he wants them to run to him.
- 11:20He desires that all of the energy that is put into disobedience be put into the pursuit of God.
- 11:28As this chapter closes, we see again that God desires a relationship.
- 11:33He asks Moses to stand by him and to walk closely by him, not turning to the left or to the right.
- 11:41He wants a walking relationship with his people. He doesn't want a sitting in
- 11:45the pew sort of relationship, but a relationship that walks in the ways of God,
- 11:50like we read about in verse 33.
- 11:53He wants a relationship where we are taking him with us wherever we go.
- 11:59God's desire is that we would obey him and love him and relate to him for who
- 12:05he is, the God of the universe.
- 12:09So often we treat God as if he were a puppet on a string or someone who is only
- 12:14there when we need him, but absent when all is well.
- 12:18God is the one and only God. He can't be ignored or replaced,
- 12:24but he's to be reverenced, followed, and praised.
- 12:29Most importantly, though, this God of the universe wants us to love him as much as he loves us.
- 12:37We know that God sent his only son to die on the cross for our sins.
- 12:41That is the perfect definition of love.
- 12:44Besides our faith, all God wants in return is for us to live close enough to
- 12:50him that we might have a personal relationship with him.
- 12:54God's desire is for a relationship that is based on love.
- 12:58His desire is that we obey him so
- 13:01that as we read in verse 29 it might be well with them and with their children
- 13:07forever god wants the very best for us and he asks for the very best in return
- 13:13keep in mind however that what he asks is nothing in comparison to what he's given to us.
- 13:22The love of God is the greatest and most immeasurable substance in the universe.
- 13:29His love is the same for each and every person ever created,
- 13:33and yet His love is so personal.
- 13:35God loves the world. We know that. We read about that in verses like John 3, 16.
- 13:41But He wants a relationship with you.
- 13:45Cultivate that relationship with Jesus. Walk with Him in the ways that He asks,
- 13:50not turning to the left or turning to the right, but walking the straight and narrow path with Him.
- 13:58Remember that you are loved. Jesus loves you.
