- 0:19Speaker 1: Donald J. Trump's leadership. I'm Christy nom the United States
- 0:23Speaker 1: Secretary of Homeland Security. Under President Trump, attempted illegal border
- 0:28Speaker 1: crossings are at the lowest levels ever recorded, and over

- 1:00Speaker 3: All right, guys, welcome back e y l international.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Yes we're back North.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Yes, that's a fact. Game of Thrones. What they say
- 1:12Speaker 3: the North.
- 1:15Speaker 4: We say we are that's that's that's the whole city
- 1:19Speaker 4: slang now.
- 1:20Speaker 5: So if you don't, yeah, the North North Nets, Stark.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Nets, stark right and John Snow the bass of John Snow.
- 1:35Speaker 3: Shout to John Snow. So yeah, your Lisia. The good
- 1:37Speaker 3: thing about your Lisia is that you know it started
- 1:41Speaker 3: in Choice basement, Choice living room. We're still here, yeah,
- 1:45Speaker 3: right outside, right right outside of New York City, shout
- 1:48Speaker 3: out the Greenberg. And now we reached all over the world.
- 1:51Speaker 3: It's crazy what you can do with the iPhone. And
- 1:54Speaker 3: you know, we have a huge listenership, not only in
- 1:56Speaker 3: America but pretty much everywhere. And our second biggest market
- 2:01Speaker 3: outside of the United States is Canada, specifically Toronto.
- 2:05Speaker 2: The great City of Toronto.
- 2:06Speaker 3: That's a fact. So you know, we made it an
- 2:08Speaker 3: initiative this year to try to do more content relative
- 2:11Speaker 3: relative to people in other markets, and Toronto is number
- 2:15Speaker 3: one on our list. We got a dope event planning
- 2:17Speaker 3: for Toronto. Whenever it's quarantine, like you gotta pull up
- 2:20Speaker 3: to that you in town. So our guest today was
- 2:25Speaker 3: just like a no brainer. He actually commented on my
- 2:28Speaker 3: post and I realized that he was following me, and
- 2:30Speaker 3: I was like, oh, this is dope. So I hit
- 2:32Speaker 3: him up. I'm like, Yo, you're interested in coming on
- 2:34Speaker 3: the podcast. He's like, yeah, for sure, let's set it up.
- 2:35Speaker 3: And you know, within a couple of weeks we got it.
- 2:38Speaker 3: We got it set up. So if you are a
- 2:40Speaker 3: fan of music, like the music period me and Joy y'all,
- 2:45Speaker 3: you definitely notice gentleman's name. So Director X is his
- 2:48Speaker 3: professional name, but his birth name is Julian Christian Luz
- 2:52Speaker 3: and he used to previously before Director X, it was
- 2:54Speaker 3: Little X, And I mean resume just reads like a
- 2:58Speaker 3: who's who. He's worked with everybody from US Shure, jay Z, Shwan,
- 3:00Speaker 3: Paul and Theli to Tato, Justin Bieber, Kanye, Drake, Nicki
- 3:04Speaker 3: Minaj's t I. He did most recently, Drake in Futures
- 3:08Speaker 3: Life is Good video.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Love that video.
- 3:09Speaker 3: He did French Mantana's famous video Drake and Rihanna.
- 3:13Speaker 4: I was about to say you left Rihanna. He did
- 3:15Speaker 4: Rihanna's first video Umbrella trying to replay.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, yeah, that's not good.
- 3:20Speaker 3: Drake hotline blank, That's classic.
- 3:23Speaker 2: One of my son's favorite videos.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Drake started from the bottom.
- 3:26Speaker 2: We can go on yeah a lot.
- 3:27Speaker 4: Hell yeah, f Wright is I mean yeah.
- 3:31Speaker 3: The list goes on, but not only music videos. He
- 3:37Speaker 3: also has three movies under his belt across the line.
- 3:40Speaker 3: One point in.
- 3:41Speaker 4: Super Fly, Yeah, shout out to love verd love that
- 3:43Speaker 4: movie to I love that.
- 3:45Speaker 3: That's his favorite, that's his favorite movie.
- 3:50Speaker 6: Across the line, and.
- 3:53Speaker 3: Okay, yeah, and then also you helped out on one
- 3:57Speaker 3: of our favorite all.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Time classic Belly classic.
- 4:01Speaker 3: Yes, that's a classic. That's a classic for sure. So yeah,
- 4:04Speaker 3: you know, this is gonna be a dope conversation. We're
- 4:06Speaker 3: gonna cover a variety of different topics that we haven't
- 4:08Speaker 3: covered before as far as you know, being a director
- 4:10Speaker 3: and being on the other side of the camera capturing
- 4:13Speaker 3: moments and capturing musicians and talent and actors and things
- 4:16Speaker 3: in that age. A lot of time people think they
- 4:17Speaker 3: can only make a living and entertainment on one side, being
- 4:20Speaker 3: an entertainer, but there's other sides to it. Being a
- 4:24Speaker 3: director is actually the most important thing. Like if you're
- 4:26Speaker 3: not capturing that moment, it never.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Happened exactly exactly.
- 4:30Speaker 4: And I think what is magical about this story is
- 4:33Speaker 4: like a lot of people think they have to be
- 4:34Speaker 4: formally trained, but you're gonna learn today, Like yo, sometimes
- 4:37Speaker 4: some things come natural to you and you just got
- 4:39Speaker 4: to go with God's bless you with.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Yeah, so before we start, pleasure, thank you, thank you
- 4:44Speaker 3: for joining us. We appreciate it for sure. So let's
- 4:48Speaker 3: get right into it. So, like I said, I mean,
- 4:49Speaker 3: it's crazy because one of my friends shot out to
- 4:51Speaker 3: Greg Barnett another ey he hit me up like a
- 4:54Speaker 3: couple weeks ago, like, are y'all planning to have any
- 4:56Speaker 3: directors on any movie? Directors anything like that. I'm like,
- 4:58Speaker 3: it's funny you say that. Actually just woke. So I'm
- 5:02Speaker 3: interested to know because there's there's a professional I feel like,
- 5:06Speaker 3: correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel like there's
- 5:07Speaker 3: a professional path to get into being a director, and
- 5:10Speaker 3: then there is the alternative path, so that the professional
- 5:14Speaker 3: path is like going to college, like you can go
- 5:16Speaker 3: to studying and all of that, and then the other
- 5:19Speaker 3: alternative path is networking, you know, working your way up internships,
- 5:24Speaker 3: and I guess they kind of both combined. But we
- 5:26Speaker 3: see a lot of especially in our culture, like you know,
- 5:28Speaker 3: Jim Jones used to direct video. Did you know that? Yeah?
- 5:31Speaker 3: So what was your path into becoming one of the
- 5:35Speaker 3: greatest directors in hip hop history? Like how did how
- 5:39Speaker 3: did you go from living in Toronto, Canada being you know,
- 5:45Speaker 3: being world well known? Uh, how did that happen?
- 5:49Speaker 7: So doing logos?
- 5:50Speaker 6: So I started doing flyers and then I started doing
- 5:53Speaker 6: around the city everywhere.
- 5:58Speaker 7: All Right, I have myself. If I go to a party,
- 6:00Speaker 7: I find the party promoter, I'd say, who.
- 6:02Speaker 6: Does your flyers? And my line was, who does your flyers?
- 6:04Speaker 6: So he sucks something better?
- 6:09Speaker 7: Didn't know who. I'd never seen that. I didn't know
- 6:10Speaker 7: if anything's distant the competition.
- 6:13Speaker 6: So that got me going down the path of I
- 6:17Speaker 6: want to be a graphic design.
- 6:18Speaker 7: I was going to be a graphic design So there's a.
- 6:20Speaker 6: Part of this where I tell people, especially young people,
- 6:23Speaker 6: follow your interests. Well, I was interested in drawing, and
- 6:26Speaker 6: then I was interested in hip hop, and then hip
- 6:28Speaker 6: hop and drawing got me drawing the flyers for hip
- 6:31Speaker 6: hop parties, right, and then I wanted to make those
- 6:34Speaker 6: flyers better.
- 6:35Speaker 7: So then I started getting.
- 6:36Speaker 6: Into computer programs so I could print out. So now
- 6:38Speaker 6: I'm doing graphic design work. I'm doing stuff. And then
- 6:41Speaker 6: I was able to get that program you know, his
- 6:43Speaker 6: computers got more and more. My father worked at Teshiba,
- 6:45Speaker 6: so I was Eventually I think I got the program.
- 6:48Speaker 6: Somehow I started learning the program. So I used to
- 6:51Speaker 6: have to go to friends homes to use it. If
- 6:53Speaker 6: at first, I have to travel very far to use
- 6:56Speaker 6: this program.
- 6:57Speaker 7: But Correll draw is the program.
- 6:59Speaker 6: But I again, I graphic design, the basics of how
- 7:02Speaker 6: you work something like that.
- 7:04Speaker 7: I'm still like fifteen sixteen. Then I move out of
- 7:09Speaker 7: my home real young and I'm.
- 7:11Speaker 6: At my I'm living in my friend's basement studio. So
- 7:13Speaker 6: they're all there making hip hop. They want to be rappers.
- 7:16Speaker 7: I start writing some rhymes for them.
- 7:18Speaker 6: I go to a poetry reading with a friend of
- 7:20Speaker 6: mine that reads poetry and at the end say if
- 7:22Speaker 6: anyone wants to come.
- 7:23Speaker 7: Up, come up.
- 7:23Speaker 6: I go up and read a rhyme I root for
- 7:25Speaker 6: my friend. They say, hey, I like that thing you wrote.
- 7:28Speaker 6: Come to another one. So now I'm a graphic designing
- 7:32Speaker 6: graphic designer poetry guy.
- 7:35Speaker 7: I'm going, I mean, and this is again follow your interest.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Yeah, everything needs to be a big and if you
- 7:41Speaker 2: like depression, now is everything is a master plants and success.
- 7:44Speaker 7: No one's the saying do you like to sing the
- 7:47Speaker 7: fucking sin? Do you like to draw and draw?
- 7:49Speaker 6: Do you like the Paint Paint. Who gives a fuck
- 7:51Speaker 6: if you're going to be a dud? Like there's this
- 7:53Speaker 6: there's this undercurrent of our culture that if you're not
- 7:57Speaker 6: if you're doing something to not be the most successful person.
- 8:00Speaker 7: In the world, And what are you doing? Right? You're rapping?
- 8:04Speaker 7: Just the rapping. You're not rapping. No, I just like
- 8:06Speaker 7: the Red Road. You know, I'm not bad.
- 8:10Speaker 6: Like I doesn't mean I'm trying to you know, maybe
- 8:12Speaker 6: I'll do a show like It's whatever, wherever it comes from.
- 8:15Speaker 7: Do what's interesting. Right.
- 8:17Speaker 6: So I'm probably seventeen now, I'm doing graphic design and art,
- 8:22Speaker 6: and I'm thinking I'm gonna be a graphic designer when
- 8:24Speaker 6: I grow up. That ship before that when I was
- 8:26Speaker 6: in when I was in junior high, in the first
- 8:29Speaker 6: year high school, I thought I was gonna be a.
- 8:30Speaker 7: Comic book artist. So my common I was comic books,
- 8:32Speaker 7: hip hop. You know what I'm saying. Just keep going.
- 8:35Speaker 6: But it's always evolving. There's always art and the expression.
- 8:39Speaker 6: So there's a show up here called Rap City.
- 8:41Speaker 7: This is before you.
- 8:42Speaker 6: Guys have rap Sticky and that was our video channel
- 8:45Speaker 6: up here, and they do a poetry episode, so that
- 8:48Speaker 6: I come in. A bunch of us are reading poems
- 8:50Speaker 6: and I real home and as they're doing the show,
- 8:53Speaker 6: and I'm looking around the studio and said, I say
- 8:56Speaker 6: to the producer, Hey, there's a guy out here named
- 8:59Speaker 6: Big C.
- 9:00Speaker 7: Know Big Seed now in the music industry, but Big
- 9:01Speaker 7: C was an intern on Much Music.
- 9:03Speaker 6: He was like and he was on the scene, and
- 9:05Speaker 6: O was around, and he was working. We thought he
- 9:08Speaker 6: was working on Much Music.
- 9:09Speaker 7: And now he's a unit of system, right, so he's
- 9:10Speaker 7: doing an internship. But we didn't know that. So everyone
- 9:12Speaker 7: thought Bigs he was rich because he went to go
- 9:14Speaker 7: inside Much be.
- 9:16Speaker 4: So like so like for us, Much Music, in my
- 9:19Speaker 4: mind is like what t r L was for y'all,
- 9:21Speaker 4: for us was MTV, So it was MTV.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Yeah, music and TV.
- 9:27Speaker 7: This is the rap city. So I'm looking around.
- 9:29Speaker 6: I go yo, and I knew C had got a
- 9:30Speaker 6: job at BMG. He stepped up in the world. But
- 9:33Speaker 6: what happened to the Big C's job? She goes, Oh,
- 9:35Speaker 6: no one's doing that, and I want I want to
- 9:37Speaker 6: do it, So okay, next thing, I know, I'm the
- 9:40Speaker 6: intern that Much Music, I'm carrying lights and ship.
- 9:44Speaker 7: I'm you know, I'm the Internet much music.
- 9:47Speaker 6: I'm doing Rap City and other show called Soul in
- 9:49Speaker 6: the City all that. So now while I'm there, I'm
- 9:51Speaker 6: looking at the cameras and the lights and hey, this
- 9:54Speaker 6: is interesting, this is creative. Maybe I'll get into like
- 9:56Speaker 6: TV or a film. And at the same time, I'm
- 9:58Speaker 6: also looking at music videos. This is just when Hike
- 10:01Speaker 6: wayiamed to show it up.
- 10:02Speaker 7: So when I go when I would be at.
- 10:05Speaker 6: Home watching Rap City, there'd be these certain videos just
- 10:09Speaker 6: didn't look like it just looked better felt specially wu
- 10:13Speaker 6: Tan can't be so simple flavoring or remix class And.
- 10:20Speaker 7: Then so Vibe magazine does there's a little one pager
- 10:25Speaker 7: on it. So at this time, so now.
- 10:27Speaker 6: I'm doing logos and for my school project, when I
- 10:31Speaker 6: decided when I get signed, I want to be a director,
- 10:33Speaker 6: and I'm watching Hip's work. I go to school and
- 10:36Speaker 6: I make my I do my final year.
- 10:41Speaker 7: A video. I make a music video, so I have
- 10:44Speaker 7: my contact. So I take one of my poems that
- 10:47Speaker 7: I did with a friend.
- 10:49Speaker 6: And we make a video about it, right, and it's
- 10:53Speaker 6: it's actually a story about you know, this kid getting
- 10:55Speaker 6: shot at school because they're you know, people are talking
- 10:57Speaker 6: ship and whatever. So the misunderstanding of violence, and so
- 11:02Speaker 6: now I got so see how it all comes together.
- 11:04Speaker 7: I got my poem, I got my artistic sentence. I
- 11:05Speaker 7: got the much music internship.
- 11:07Speaker 6: So I'm able to shoot the performance with one of
- 11:11Speaker 6: their EG cameras, one of the cameras they shoot the
- 11:14Speaker 6: news with, right, so I have a higher quality performance.
- 11:18Speaker 6: I shoot the narrative with a handicap, and then every.
- 11:22Speaker 7: Night for about a week or two, I would go
- 11:24Speaker 7: in a bunch of music.
- 11:25Speaker 6: This is before heavy security. They thought I still work there,
- 11:27Speaker 6: even though my internship was done. I would go in
- 11:30Speaker 6: after hours and work on the machines and.
- 11:33Speaker 7: Put together my ed so you're edit.
- 11:34Speaker 6: I would do it by hand, right, so I'd be
- 11:37Speaker 6: watching it. I'd do the lyrics and I would write
- 11:39Speaker 6: out and I was so I did down to the frame,
- 11:41Speaker 6: the d mark and the outlook, so editors understand the
- 11:43Speaker 6: insanity of what this is.
- 11:45Speaker 7: For a full three minute and fifty second piece. Zero
- 11:48Speaker 7: zero one dash over to dash one.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Before dash ye, yeah, zero one.
- 11:54Speaker 3: But you know what I'm saying.
- 11:55Speaker 7: All it takes. Because I learned my lessons from doing it. Edit,
- 11:59Speaker 7: I'm prepared, and I did one of.
- 12:00Speaker 6: My projects in my internship. This editor who's gonna help
- 12:03Speaker 6: me edit this project? I did with him and I
- 12:06Speaker 6: just walked in with tapes and he didn't have time
- 12:08Speaker 6: and we just kind of so this time I walked
- 12:10Speaker 6: in with paper. Yeah, two weeks preparing it, going through
- 12:14Speaker 6: the edit session, handle the paper, we assemble it.
- 12:17Speaker 3: I got.
- 12:17Speaker 7: This is back in the days, there was.
- 12:19Speaker 6: No There was no use singing a song and then
- 12:23Speaker 6: making a music video where.
- 12:24Speaker 7: You're lip syncing it.
- 12:25Speaker 6: That was impossible unless you have unless you have professional equipment.
- 12:30Speaker 6: That could not happen period of a story. If you're
- 12:33Speaker 6: gonna edit something together, you guys do two VHS tapes
- 12:36Speaker 6: and you played one and you get wired the other and.
- 12:39Speaker 7: You're positing like you know what I'm saying that we
- 12:41Speaker 7: can do this.
- 12:41Speaker 6: Crude kind of stuff. But now I'm my thing with
- 12:44Speaker 6: the much music people. I got slow motion, I got souls,
- 12:47Speaker 6: I'm lip singing shit we all take for granted shit.
- 12:48Speaker 7: We can do on our phone. I needed a full on.
- 12:51Speaker 6: Multimillion dollar edit bay and a multimillion dollar TV station
- 12:55Speaker 6: to you know what I'm saying.
- 12:56Speaker 4: Yeah, and so you touch yourself all these skills.
- 12:59Speaker 7: No, I'm in there with the editor. Remember that I'm
- 13:02Speaker 7: just an intern. They wouldn't let me breathed.
- 13:04Speaker 6: In that room without someone in there to book over me. Right,
- 13:06Speaker 6: So I'm in there with an editor. But I made
- 13:08Speaker 6: these relationships, so I had I had my performance shot
- 13:12Speaker 6: had a better quality because I made a relationship with
- 13:14Speaker 6: the cameraman. I had an edit that was a professional
- 13:17Speaker 6: edit because I made a relationship with the editor.
- 13:19Speaker 7: But now I got this piece. So I got this videotape.
- 13:21Speaker 6: At the same time, I was also I printed up
- 13:23Speaker 6: screen printed a bunch of T shirts with some of
- 13:26Speaker 6: my art.
- 13:27Speaker 7: And of course I had.
- 13:29Speaker 6: A kind of like a four page portfolio of my
- 13:32Speaker 6: logos and my flyers.
- 13:33Speaker 7: And just the things I drawn.
- 13:35Speaker 6: So I discovered Hype Williams. I see the article in
- 13:39Speaker 6: Vibe magazine. I write Vibe Magazine, I write men about
- 13:42Speaker 6: Mimi Belvet.
- 13:43Speaker 7: If you don't know what me me Bell.
- 13:44Speaker 4: Is No, No, I don't know me.
- 13:46Speaker 7: She she manages for Ell. She's one of these producers
- 13:51Speaker 7: of hidden figures. Right.
- 13:54Speaker 6: Just so again I tell these kids, people you meet,
- 13:57Speaker 6: this is over twenty years ago. People you meet in
- 14:00Speaker 6: the game, you're gonna know a good deal of people.
- 14:03Speaker 7: You rubbing Shoulders with right now, you will keep on
- 14:05Speaker 7: rebel Shulders with for twenty three years? You know what
- 14:07Speaker 7: I'm saying. M Andre Herrel and Russell Simmons, how long
- 14:10Speaker 7: have they've been Franis thirty four years?
- 14:12Speaker 3: Yeah, all our relationships exactly.
- 14:16Speaker 7: The sounds this goes.
- 14:17Speaker 6: So now I have the I have a poetry video
- 14:24Speaker 6: edited professionally.
- 14:25Speaker 7: It looks like, Hey, this looks like some kid. That's
- 14:27Speaker 7: some talent.
- 14:29Speaker 6: I got a T shirt with a screen printed art
- 14:32Speaker 6: of mine. I got a little package of my art,
- 14:33Speaker 6: and I write a letter, Hey, I want to you know,
- 14:36Speaker 6: I want to inter for Hype Williams.
- 14:38Speaker 7: How do I get a hold right? Send this whole package?
- 14:40Speaker 7: Don't hear back? Don't hear back.
- 14:42Speaker 6: So then I finally just call because the number is
- 14:43Speaker 6: in there. So I call Vibe Magazine and I.
- 14:47Speaker 7: Say, and they I get me me. Okay, if I
- 14:50Speaker 7: want to get something to Hype Wiams, who should I
- 14:51Speaker 7: send it?
- 14:52Speaker 6: So I knew ian to know back then I shouldn't
- 14:54Speaker 6: ask Hype Williams. Though, So she gave me like Akila
- 14:58Speaker 6: turner and phone number two their office and hung up
- 15:00Speaker 6: on me, not rudely, but.
- 15:03Speaker 7: That is enough I'm lucky.
- 15:04Speaker 6: I got my little So now I got the numbers
- 15:06Speaker 6: of the office and the person I'm calling the office,
- 15:08Speaker 6: I send them the package, and I actually send to
- 15:11Speaker 6: another friend of mine who is working for a director.
- 15:14Speaker 6: I can't even remember his name, and she.
- 15:17Speaker 7: Never I didn't know. She didn't send him mind, she
- 15:19Speaker 7: didn't show him mine.
- 15:21Speaker 6: So again, don't this this. When you're young, you expect
- 15:25Speaker 6: something from your friends. Don't don't don't expect shit from anybody,
- 15:30Speaker 6: but don't expect shit from your friends. Don't think that
- 15:32Speaker 6: the people you work with are your friends and then
- 15:34Speaker 6: therefore should be doing the things you think your friends
- 15:36Speaker 6: should do. You'd stop all that shit right now. Save
- 15:39Speaker 6: yourself the headaches, save yourself the heartaches. If people are
- 15:41Speaker 6: cool with you, because guess what, people who see it,
- 15:44Speaker 6: you don't.
- 15:44Speaker 7: Have to be a friend fucking say hey, you got
- 15:46Speaker 7: to have a kid come in. That's not People don't
- 15:49Speaker 7: do that because they want to be your friend. They
- 15:50Speaker 7: do that because kid like you, come work over here.
- 15:54Speaker 7: You can help me, you know what I'm saying. So
- 15:57Speaker 7: my friend doesn't even which is good.
- 15:59Speaker 6: If I'm learning under that, I know where right, So
- 16:02Speaker 6: I can't even remember his name, not to.
- 16:04Speaker 7: Disrespect, but I can't.
- 16:07Speaker 2: Ever remain nameless.
- 16:09Speaker 7: Yeah, but again it's a good lesson in friendship. The
- 16:12Speaker 7: girls Incredibles is good, but you can't.
- 16:13Speaker 6: Don't expect your friends to also somehow be your I
- 16:17Speaker 6: don't know what, be your parents, be your business manager.
- 16:19Speaker 7: I don't know what the fun but they're your friends.
- 16:21Speaker 7: Let that be. And my crew we have a thing
- 16:24Speaker 7: like you're fired and see you at the barbecue?
- 16:26Speaker 2: Really friends, you.
- 16:28Speaker 7: Know what I'm saying. That didn't work out? What you know?
- 16:31Speaker 7: Three your friends? You know what I'm saying.
- 16:39Speaker 8: So because they work it out home, ain't the job
- 16:44Speaker 8: for you?
- 16:50Speaker 7: Is that real? Can can your friendship survive that?
- 16:53Speaker 6: So anyways, now I got the package, I said to
- 16:57Speaker 6: the hype, I'm calling them and calling them, calling them.
- 16:59Speaker 7: And you versus good.
- 17:00Speaker 6: Around that time, I had a summer job with Cardinal
- 17:03Speaker 6: of Fish out He had organized.
- 17:05Speaker 4: This like they had a yeah we had we had
- 17:09Speaker 4: this summer.
- 17:10Speaker 7: We had a riot out here, so that you need
- 17:12Speaker 7: some ship, so they gave us there.
- 17:15Speaker 6: There's like these jobs in the arts and great lesson
- 17:18Speaker 6: and investing in the arts.
- 17:19Speaker 7: You might hear like we're gonna pay a bunch of
- 17:20Speaker 7: black kids to make music and all kind d of stuff,
- 17:22Speaker 7: and you said, what the fuck? Whathever waste the money?
- 17:24Speaker 6: And no, no, damn your ninety percent of those kids
- 17:27Speaker 6: a good kids ended up in the entertainment business, working producing.
- 17:31Speaker 6: I'm a director. I became a director. I left town,
- 17:34Speaker 6: I came back. I brought millions of dollars to the city.
- 17:36Speaker 7: Cardinal has put the city on the map, you know
- 17:38Speaker 7: what I'm saying.
- 17:38Speaker 6: So investing in the arts and investing into your children
- 17:41Speaker 6: is a good idea.
- 17:42Speaker 7: They go on to do this work. So I was
- 17:44Speaker 7: in a program like that, and Cardinal organized a trip
- 17:47Speaker 7: to New York.
- 17:48Speaker 6: So the New York trip was, you know, we'd go
- 17:50Speaker 6: see record labels and I get out.
- 17:52Speaker 7: I'm on my hustle. I'm on my hustle. I got
- 17:54Speaker 7: my backpack full of work. So we're like, hey, we're
- 17:57Speaker 7: gonna go see you know, low records. And we'd be
- 18:01Speaker 7: walking and talking to someone out said hey, man, can
- 18:04Speaker 7: I show you something? Yeah? Sure, and I'll showing my video.
- 18:07Speaker 7: Can I show you something? I show I showed it
- 18:08Speaker 7: if I could have n if I saw a moment,
- 18:10Speaker 7: I'll show you.
- 18:11Speaker 6: And I'm always surprised that in the years since.
- 18:17Speaker 7: Everyone could have a reel on their phone.
- 18:19Speaker 6: There's maybe I could think of two kids who came
- 18:22Speaker 6: up to me and said, look at this on my phone,
- 18:25Speaker 6: and one of it was just a few months ago,
- 18:26Speaker 6: and one before one before that was years ago.
- 18:29Speaker 7: You know what I'm saying.
- 18:29Speaker 6: Now, I sometimes don't like to put kids on the
- 18:32Speaker 6: game because if you weren't doing this and now you
- 18:34Speaker 6: heard me do it.
- 18:35Speaker 7: Now you've got some of this should be in me,
- 18:38Speaker 7: you know, and.
- 18:42Speaker 6: You gotta you gotta have to work on yourself and
- 18:43Speaker 6: work on your own, like really, if you got the
- 18:46Speaker 6: hustle to figure.
- 18:47Speaker 7: It out, you know what I'm saying.
- 18:49Speaker 6: Uh, But either way, I would walk in these offices.
- 18:52Speaker 6: I have my tape, I had my back, I have
- 18:53Speaker 6: everything on me in all time. I could make you
- 18:55Speaker 6: a party flower on the spot showing people my work
- 18:58Speaker 6: doing the thing.
- 18:59Speaker 7: But now I'm also in New York. I'm calling up
- 19:01Speaker 7: pipes office. Have you looked at it? And you looked
- 19:02Speaker 7: at it? Have you looked at it? And then one
- 19:04Speaker 7: day a call and they say we don't even know
- 19:06Speaker 7: who We don't because they say not yet, not yet.
- 19:09Speaker 7: Whatever a call to say not yet, not yet, so okay,
- 19:11Speaker 7: when you got it, you haven't watched it. Then one
- 19:13Speaker 7: day I called They're like, we don't know who, we
- 19:16Speaker 7: don't what who?
- 19:17Speaker 3: What what are you talking about?
- 19:21Speaker 7: Oh? Really? Oh cool? So I called it. But hey,
- 19:24Speaker 7: what's the address there? You gotta give me address?
- 19:26Speaker 3: Goes?
- 19:26Speaker 7: What what's up?
- 19:33Speaker 4: Yeah, that's what somebody see my tape?
- 19:40Speaker 7: Yeah, if we're the tape, where's the shirt? Where's all
- 19:42Speaker 7: that ship? Give it back? So? Hey you got again?
- 19:49Speaker 6: Man, you go with this, go your young energy.
- 19:53Speaker 7: You're too young to know your mistakes. So you just
- 19:54Speaker 7: flying from you know what I'm saying.
- 19:57Speaker 6: So I go to the office, one person in the office,
- 19:59Speaker 6: and you're someone's watching this.
- 20:03Speaker 3: I'll go.
- 20:04Speaker 4: So it's so it's like the reception is at the death.
- 20:07Speaker 4: She's the only one there, Like, yo, you're watching I
- 20:09Speaker 4: don't give this is it?
- 20:10Speaker 7: Yeah? The dude, the dude there, Yeah, he's only one
- 20:11Speaker 7: in the office. You're watching this. Someone's watching this. Bro.
- 20:18Speaker 3: That's now that's the fact. I mean, that's how. That's
- 20:20Speaker 3: the kind of energy that you got to have. Like, yo,
- 20:22Speaker 3: it's not you can't take you can't take no fun answer.
- 20:25Speaker 2: You take pride in what you did. I mean, I
- 20:28Speaker 2: just want people to see the art.
- 20:29Speaker 7: You look. So he looks at it. It's some emotion
- 20:31Speaker 7: and all, and.
- 20:32Speaker 9: Tell you you should wait a minute. Chelsea's coming back
- 20:37Speaker 9: someone someone you need to show the producer. So Chelsea
- 20:40Speaker 9: shows up again, Chelsea. I just worked with Chelsea the
- 20:42Speaker 9: other day because she's working in Atlanta with Toyle Harry.
- 20:47Speaker 2: People you know from yes thirty years the.
- 20:49Speaker 3: Beginning, and then now they all all over the world
- 20:51Speaker 3: doing amazing things the world.
- 20:53Speaker 7: Hey up, hey, ask you that a minute.
- 20:55Speaker 6: I need you like the relationships, this is all important.
- 20:58Speaker 6: Chelsea looks at it and I say to her, I
- 20:59Speaker 6: just I know.
- 21:00Speaker 7: I'm good enough to work for free.
- 21:02Speaker 3: Powerful, that's powerful. Now I don't want that, people say,
- 21:06Speaker 3: you say, I know, because a lot of times people
- 21:07Speaker 3: don't want to do that either. They don't want to
- 21:09Speaker 3: right out the gate. They want to get compensated. It's
- 21:11Speaker 3: not wrong being conversated, but sometimes it's like you have
- 21:14Speaker 3: to do internships. Sometimes you have to not get conversated
- 21:18Speaker 3: at first so you can get compensated on the back end.
- 21:21Speaker 2: And you took it to another level.
- 21:22Speaker 4: You said I'm good enough to work for free, like
- 21:24Speaker 4: I'm gonna work for free and I'm good enough to
- 21:26Speaker 4: do it.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Let me in, let me in the do it.
- 21:29Speaker 3: What's yeah, yeah you are okay.
- 21:33Speaker 7: Come back in the month. I come back to Toronto
- 21:36Speaker 7: and it's like I'm in a small town.
- 21:39Speaker 6: You know.
- 21:45Speaker 4: Now, we gotta put this in context because people they
- 21:48Speaker 4: think Toronto is amazing, and it is amazing places. But
- 21:50Speaker 4: this is prior to this is Drake and the Overo
- 21:53Speaker 4: movement in the Weekend, way.
- 21:54Speaker 3: Prior to this, way before no.
- 21:58Speaker 4: One did that era and we said, we said Carnal,
- 22:01Speaker 4: but people don't even know who that is. So Carnal
- 22:03Speaker 4: fished out. It was a big deal at that point.
- 22:05Speaker 6: Cardinal like Cardinal's my generation, like the little older generation.
- 22:09Speaker 7: So there's people trying to make music. Things going on
- 22:13Speaker 7: a little little trunck, but is still a pipe dream.
- 22:16Speaker 6: Still, it's still it's still rough either way. I come
- 22:21Speaker 6: back and it's just it's I'm just like, I gotta go.
- 22:22Speaker 6: It doesn't feel like anyone's doing anything. You just know
- 22:24Speaker 6: when you get that small town. Yeah, So I leave
- 22:29Speaker 6: two weeks early. I come back to New York and
- 22:33Speaker 6: Chelsea the day I walked to your God.
- 22:35Speaker 7: Is and how you have to trust your instinct. The
- 22:38Speaker 7: day I walk into office was the day Chelsea had quit.
- 22:42Speaker 2: Mm hmm.
- 22:43Speaker 6: So the executive producer, Aquila looks at me and she
- 22:47Speaker 6: says that goes, I don't know who you are, what
- 22:49Speaker 6: this is. I don't know what's going on because I
- 22:53Speaker 6: I thought he's supposed to be an intern, all right,
- 22:55Speaker 6: So I.
- 22:56Speaker 7: Just I did a George Constanza. I just showed up
- 22:58Speaker 7: the next.
- 23:00Speaker 3: With my time card, black business.
- 23:11Speaker 6: You know, they're making these videos and ships so crazy.
- 23:14Speaker 6: They said that, all right, he's here, and then I
- 23:18Speaker 6: just showed up and went to work. I'm here, you
- 23:20Speaker 6: know what I'm saying. And at that time I just
- 23:23Speaker 6: stayed by my aunt and he's flatbush. She literally the
- 23:27Speaker 6: only TV with table was the morning in their bedroom.
- 23:31Speaker 7: The the other TV was like an old school.
- 23:34Speaker 4: Like radio air over the air, yeah, turning ob antennas
- 23:38Speaker 4: all that.
- 23:38Speaker 7: Yes, CBS in the kitchen, so like uncomfortable. So there's
- 23:44Speaker 7: no there's no getting lost in TV. There's no getting
- 23:46Speaker 7: lost in technology. I touched their computer once and like,
- 23:50Speaker 7: you know, I'm doing all this stuff they don't want
- 23:52Speaker 7: to do.
- 23:52Speaker 6: My mother's best friend she's like, yo, don't ever touch
- 23:55Speaker 6: the computer again.
- 23:58Speaker 7: So they don't want me on the computer. They don't
- 23:59Speaker 7: want me. Actually there's TV there. Just you can sleep here.
- 24:02Speaker 7: I'm in a little room. Also, make your guest room
- 24:05Speaker 7: a little uncomfortable. Don't make lavish guest.
- 24:07Speaker 6: Rooms when you when young hip hop boys, because your
- 24:10Speaker 6: homeboys are gonna think that's their room.
- 24:14Speaker 7: So I'm staying in an uncomfortable guest bedroom and nothing
- 24:18Speaker 7: to do when I get home. So I just spent
- 24:20Speaker 7: all my time in office. And then I look around
- 24:23Speaker 7: the office say, oh, your tapes, because.
- 24:25Speaker 6: Would be okay, go get again the stacking of knowledge.
- 24:28Speaker 6: I was an intern at Much Music and National TV station.
- 24:31Speaker 6: They had a tape library system like.
- 24:33Speaker 7: An old school one, like when you go to the
- 24:35Speaker 7: old school library, go to finish. But Big Dog that
- 24:39Speaker 7: was the name. Come Big Dog Films. At Big Dog.
- 24:41Speaker 6: The tapes are all in a box in the corner
- 24:43Speaker 6: and they go find the Wu Tang video and you
- 24:44Speaker 6: just go searching like a fucking scavenger.
- 24:47Speaker 7: And all this time, and then.
- 24:49Speaker 6: They came in the office one day and there's suddenly
- 24:52Speaker 6: the all the tapes are on shelves with stickers on them.
- 24:55Speaker 6: And I had a little thing, Oh, if you're looking
- 24:57Speaker 6: for a tape. Now what you do is you look
- 24:59Speaker 6: up and then this.
- 25:01Speaker 7: Card has the code.
- 25:02Speaker 6: So a ditchy beta is a cl a half inches
- 25:05Speaker 6: and three quarters tape as that.
- 25:06Speaker 7: So I had all the codes and ability the fuck
- 25:08Speaker 7: is this kid?
- 25:10Speaker 6: They'd go, they leave and come back and all the
- 25:12Speaker 6: furniture be rearranged because the way they used to have
- 25:16Speaker 6: it is that the.
- 25:17Speaker 7: Door would open and people will.
- 25:18Speaker 6: Go in, but the desk was here, So here's the
- 25:20Speaker 6: door and here's the desk, and people would just walk
- 25:23Speaker 6: by the desk.
- 25:24Speaker 7: So one day they came and the desk was here
- 25:26Speaker 7: and here's the door. So now you walked in and
- 25:28Speaker 7: met a receptives and there's chairs. You feel me, I
- 25:32Speaker 7: constantly do, constantly doing shit like this. I didn't ask anybody.
- 25:36Speaker 7: They would just come in and some new shit that
- 25:37Speaker 7: happened to office play was better.
- 25:40Speaker 2: Yeah yeah yeah, So in.
- 25:43Speaker 7: This now I begin.
- 25:44Speaker 6: Then I meet Hype and I'm always drawing and I'm
- 25:47Speaker 6: always doing and they see my drawings and then eventually
- 25:49Speaker 6: I'm getting frustrated. I'm paying you know, on PA on sets,
- 25:53Speaker 6: and then they say we want no more interns. Because
- 25:55Speaker 6: at the same time, if I was with Hype, until
- 25:57Speaker 6: two three o'clock in the morning working on something. I'm
- 26:00Speaker 6: not showing up.
- 26:03Speaker 4: Yeah, how how was that first interaction when you when
- 26:05Speaker 4: you finally met him, like you had been trying to
- 26:07Speaker 4: get him?
- 26:08Speaker 3: I think because people might not know who Hype william is,
- 26:10Speaker 3: because we got a lot of young people that listen
- 26:12Speaker 3: to that true.
- 26:12Speaker 2: Very true. This generation is different.
- 26:16Speaker 3: Williams is, like I guess you could call him the
- 26:18Speaker 3: godfather of the million dollar budget videos, like the Once
- 26:22Speaker 3: upon a Time music video. Music video is still important,
- 26:25Speaker 3: but music videos but.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Very every very every important everything.
- 26:28Speaker 3: In the in the nineties and the early two thousands,
- 26:30Speaker 3: and Hype Williams was he was it. He was. He
- 26:33Speaker 3: was the go to guy for any of those bad
- 26:36Speaker 3: boy videos, not jay Z first one that.
- 26:41Speaker 6: The average hip hop person said, there's a director.
- 26:45Speaker 7: You know the directors name.
- 26:47Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, director, like the Spike Lee of music videos.
- 26:57Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, Like when you saw a Spike Lee joint,
- 26:59Speaker 4: you knew it it was Spike Lee. When you saw
- 27:01Speaker 4: Hype Williams Villia video, you knew it was it because
- 27:04Speaker 4: it looked different and it looked like nothing else. It
- 27:07Speaker 4: was high production, it was it was a movie.
- 27:09Speaker 3: I remember, I think it was a movie.
- 27:11Speaker 7: It was artistic, it was beautiful, but it's still true
- 27:13Speaker 7: to the culture.
- 27:14Speaker 3: I think. I think it was nas or Diddy, one
- 27:15Speaker 3: of these guys, and they was like, you know, a hype.
- 27:17Speaker 3: He he would do a video on the projects and
- 27:19Speaker 3: make you think it was rome. Like the way he
- 27:21Speaker 3: put it together. It just looked so intriguing to people,
- 27:25Speaker 3: and it was just like amazing, like the cinepography of it.
- 27:28Speaker 3: It was just like, Yo, this is the most amazing
- 27:31Speaker 3: place in the world and they could be like the gutter.
- 27:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:33Speaker 4: He I feel like he's the reason they made that
- 27:35Speaker 4: that they used to have that show.
- 27:36Speaker 2: Making a video on MTV.
- 27:38Speaker 4: It was like because you had to see the behind
- 27:40Speaker 4: the scenes of what he was actually doing to put
- 27:43Speaker 4: out these masterpieces.
- 27:44Speaker 7: Yeah, and again he's a cool dude from Queens and
- 27:47Speaker 7: he was really what hip hop.
- 27:48Speaker 6: He really was the culture it all came together is
- 27:50Speaker 6: real art now we get it with the Kanye's.
- 27:53Speaker 7: And the Virgil is like artists, you know what I mean. Yeah,
- 27:56Speaker 7: and he was that. He's in that zone.
- 27:58Speaker 6: So you know, well he came in with days like,
- 28:01Speaker 6: oh it's get built kid, You're a genius. So I
- 28:07Speaker 6: know everyone wants is they got the Hey kid, you're
- 28:08Speaker 6: a genius, but a lot of us don't.
- 28:10Speaker 7: So building building relationship builds. Finally say start drawing storyboards.
- 28:13Speaker 7: So now I'm not interuring anymore. I'm drawing storyboards. Now
- 28:16Speaker 7: I'm getting paid. Now I can buy a little watch,
- 28:18Speaker 7: Now I can buy a little clothes. You know what
- 28:19Speaker 7: I'm saying. I was able to leave my aunt's house.
- 28:22Speaker 7: I got an apartment now and well, you know, sharing
- 28:24Speaker 7: a room.
- 28:25Speaker 3: So the storyboard is like the treatment for the video.
- 28:28Speaker 7: No, the storyboards is drawing it out. It's part of
- 28:30Speaker 7: the sales pitch and what we're gonna shoot.
- 28:32Speaker 3: Okay, so that goes, That goes helps it helps people
- 28:35Speaker 3: understand what.
- 28:36Speaker 7: It's gonna be.
- 28:36Speaker 4: That goes back to your I'm thinking like pre previous
- 28:39Speaker 4: knowledge now, like when you were doing comic books.
- 28:41Speaker 2: It's kind of prepared you for this moment completely.
- 28:44Speaker 6: It all comes together, got right, And this is before
- 28:48Speaker 6: Like you could have just get on the computer and
- 28:50Speaker 6: whip up a treatment the way you get a pitch
- 28:51Speaker 6: deck in a second.
- 28:53Speaker 7: To do something like a normal pitch deck that you
- 28:55Speaker 7: get on the thing and get a PDF, you'd have
- 28:57Speaker 7: to print it out.
- 28:58Speaker 6: You have to cost hundreds of dollars because commercials did that.
- 29:01Speaker 6: When you did in those days, when you did a
- 29:03Speaker 6: commercial treatment, you did the thing and then you printed
- 29:05Speaker 6: it and sent it to the client. It will cost
- 29:08Speaker 6: hundreds of dollars to do these things. So and that's
- 29:11Speaker 6: just the print that the writer.
- 29:12Speaker 7: Is very expensive.
- 29:14Speaker 6: But anyways, so back then the treatment was just a
- 29:17Speaker 6: written document.
- 29:18Speaker 7: You got a typed out page and imagine it.
- 29:20Speaker 3: So the treatment for people that might not know the treatment,
- 29:22Speaker 3: correct me if I'm wrong, It is like it is
- 29:24Speaker 3: the step by step of what actually happens. Like I
- 29:26Speaker 3: wake up, I brush my teeth, I go to It's
- 29:29Speaker 3: like it's like you're writing out play by play what's
- 29:32Speaker 3: gonna visually be seen.
- 29:33Speaker 7: It's video.
- 29:34Speaker 2: It's the script. I feel like the script.
- 29:35Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, a script, but not really.
- 29:40Speaker 2: Wroteatment.
- 29:42Speaker 7: You're making a client understand what the video I want
- 29:45Speaker 7: to make for you? Is this right? And whichever way
- 29:48Speaker 7: you explain.
- 29:49Speaker 6: So in those days, now a treatment has pictures and
- 29:51Speaker 6: all this ship with the technology.
- 29:53Speaker 7: Back then you faxed them printed out. That was what
- 29:55Speaker 7: you got. You got a paper with.
- 29:58Speaker 6: Words on it in a fast mate.
- 30:00Speaker 7: And then I came on.
- 30:01Speaker 6: So now you got a storyboard, you got pictures, someone
- 30:04Speaker 6: drew pictures.
- 30:05Speaker 7: Oh, this is what it's gonna bean.
- 30:07Speaker 6: And then as then you sometimes need the storyboards to
- 30:10Speaker 6: explain to the crew, this is what we're doing, this
- 30:13Speaker 6: is what happens there. You know what I mean, big production,
- 30:15Speaker 6: big movies, they storyboard out action scenes.
- 30:17Speaker 7: It's like, this is just how a production warns. So
- 30:19Speaker 7: I'm a storyboard artist, right, and I'm always with him.
- 30:23Speaker 6: Now, I'm with him going you know, I'm with him
- 30:25Speaker 6: when he's working on stuff, when he's colored correct, I'm
- 30:27Speaker 6: just with him, soaking up knowledge, soaking up knowledge, cerking
- 30:29Speaker 6: up knowledge. But when I used to run packages, I
- 30:33Speaker 6: used to run we used to work a lot with
- 30:34Speaker 6: Deaf Jam, used to I used to run packages of
- 30:36Speaker 6: the deaf Jam, Rockefeller and bad Boy.
- 30:38Speaker 7: All the time. So there's people who know me as
- 30:41Speaker 7: got to run the package.
- 30:41Speaker 6: And just but that beauty of the music industries that
- 30:44Speaker 6: the interns become, the soon to become that if you don't.
- 30:47Speaker 7: Want to get paid, you don't want to. If you
- 30:49Speaker 7: are like I don't get paid, I'm not coming in.
- 30:51Speaker 7: I mean, you get everyone's on a different path.
- 30:54Speaker 6: But in those days, the way you got him was saying,
- 30:56Speaker 6: I'm working for free.
- 30:58Speaker 7: And now you're in and they see that you're good,
- 31:00Speaker 7: and then up you go, up, you go up.
- 31:01Speaker 6: You so again, a whole bunch of my friends that
- 31:04Speaker 6: are still in the game, that are still working in
- 31:06Speaker 6: the music video on the label side, do the hiring
- 31:09Speaker 6: of the directors were interns together?
- 31:11Speaker 7: You know what I'm saying.
- 31:12Speaker 4: That's that's that's that's the story, Puffy Andre Herrell, that's
- 31:15Speaker 4: the story. Uh we just I spoke to Charry Bryant,
- 31:18Speaker 4: same thing. She was an intern at Rockefeller. Yeah, they interned,
- 31:22Speaker 4: and now she's the head of co head of rock Nation.
- 31:24Speaker 4: And like you said, Kenny Burns intern like people don't
- 31:27Speaker 4: even they don't really understand internships and the value of
- 31:30Speaker 4: them and the value of, like you said, being able
- 31:32Speaker 4: to work for free and then grind your way all
- 31:34Speaker 4: the way up. It's just a thing. It's like a
- 31:36Speaker 4: lost talent at this point.
- 31:37Speaker 7: It is. In the films side.
- 31:39Speaker 6: I get asked a lot still, but the way I
- 31:41Speaker 6: get asked is is what I feel is lacking.
- 31:44Speaker 7: But either way, so now, uh running backages of doing
- 31:49Speaker 7: storyboards and and over at Death Jam, they.
- 31:53Speaker 3: Have uh mega Cormega Cormega.
- 31:58Speaker 7: Yeah, I was coming back to Toronto videos.
- 32:00Speaker 3: Okay, so that's another key.
- 32:01Speaker 7: I've come back to Toronto and again back to your friends.
- 32:04Speaker 7: People know you one way, so they knew me as
- 32:06Speaker 7: a guy who drew and did poetry. And I come
- 32:07Speaker 7: back like, hey, I'm directing now I'm working with hypelans.
- 32:10Speaker 3: Like sounds good.
- 32:13Speaker 7: This is the other guy's high.
- 32:15Speaker 6: And I was really again thinking, in my younger mind,
- 32:17Speaker 6: you know me, you should because people know you, don't
- 32:20Speaker 6: mean they're gonna do shift you because they're your friends,
- 32:22Speaker 6: don't mean they're gonna do shit. Ain't no, ain't no
- 32:24Speaker 6: reason for no one to shifting. You know what I'm saying,
- 32:26Speaker 6: to get bitter and angry and how could they kid?
- 32:30Speaker 6: And again, the way the universe works, if I had
- 32:33Speaker 6: done work with them, I would have felt beholden to
- 32:35Speaker 6: them because my old loyalty thing right would have what.
- 32:39Speaker 7: I was expecting for them.
- 32:40Speaker 6: I would have done you know what I mean, Hey,
- 32:41Speaker 6: I know you Let me help you save all that,
- 32:45Speaker 6: save all that.
- 32:46Speaker 7: So no one in my hometown wants to give me
- 32:49Speaker 7: a shot. Cool. I don't owe nobody nothing either, and
- 32:52Speaker 7: no one can say shift to me. So, uh, finally
- 32:55Speaker 7: someone gives me a break. I code at something with
- 32:57Speaker 7: a guy and I make my first video.
- 32:59Speaker 6: And for my first video, I go and talk to
- 33:01Speaker 6: a couple of street men trying to do the management
- 33:03Speaker 6: team and they go and uh, you know, I gassed
- 33:06Speaker 6: them up and we do another. They do every one
- 33:08Speaker 6: of their videos.
- 33:08Speaker 7: So I got two videos. Showed those two videos that
- 33:11Speaker 7: I did in Toronto.
- 33:12Speaker 6: To Steve Carr, who was one of the directors at
- 33:14Speaker 6: Big Dog Films. He makes a call on my behalf,
- 33:16Speaker 6: this is what you want to happen, right. He makes
- 33:18Speaker 6: a call over a big label says, this kid's really talented.
- 33:21Speaker 7: She can't join. He gives me.
- 33:25Speaker 6: So I get the Tracy Lee Buster Rhymes pired MC
- 33:29Speaker 6: video This remixed song so way to Court?
- 33:31Speaker 3: Where did Cormega come into play?
- 33:33Speaker 7: This comes later?
- 33:34Speaker 3: Okay, I got it back up with this.
- 33:36Speaker 7: So I do this video.
- 33:39Speaker 6: Mark Pitts is for by Storm Records again. Just saw
- 33:43Speaker 6: him on the side of Usher.
- 33:44Speaker 4: Everyone's big manager, usher manager.
- 33:47Speaker 6: Usher managers, not that and not that everyone you need
- 33:49Speaker 6: is gonna be around, but a hell a lot of
- 33:51Speaker 6: people you needed to be around a lot of me.
- 33:53Speaker 6: So Mark Pitts gives me this shot, they believe, and
- 33:56Speaker 6: I shoot this video. It's a white background video, and
- 33:58Speaker 6: then I sucked it off.
- 33:59Speaker 8: It's good enough to be like a video on TV
- 34:04Speaker 8: like no one, but it wasn't great one.
- 34:05Speaker 7: No one watched that video was like who did this?
- 34:08Speaker 7: And I was devastated. After I did it, I went
- 34:11Speaker 7: home devastated. I fucked it up.
- 34:13Speaker 6: I know I did all this and I'm gonna be sucky.
- 34:15Speaker 6: I'm gonna be shitting whatever.
- 34:16Speaker 7: And I was able to call Hype and Alan Ferguson,
- 34:18Speaker 7: and Alan Ferguson.
- 34:19Speaker 3: Was a DP.
- 34:19Speaker 7: He married Slag and Hype is Hype and Hype Hype
- 34:23Speaker 7: gave me a big pep talk. Adam gave me a.
- 34:25Speaker 6: Lot of technical stuff, which was helpful, but Hype gave
- 34:28Speaker 6: me the pep talk that that feeling that you suck
- 34:31Speaker 6: you gotta fight.
- 34:31Speaker 7: That feeling that you're not good enough. You need to
- 34:34Speaker 7: fight that right, and then you know again.
- 34:37Speaker 6: The philosophy of music music video it needs to be
- 34:39Speaker 6: about something. I didn't quite understand that at the time,
- 34:41Speaker 6: but he needs to be about something, okay, And then
- 34:44Speaker 6: from that I go to the bookstore and start because
- 34:47Speaker 6: before I was hanging with hype and wasn't really studying,
- 34:50Speaker 6: kind of like what I said about the editor when
- 34:51Speaker 6: I wasn't prepared.
- 34:52Speaker 7: And then the next time I said, okay, now I
- 34:54Speaker 7: see the mistake. Let me go get it right. So
- 34:56Speaker 7: I looked at it said okay, standing beside hype is
- 34:59Speaker 7: not This is helpful, but that's not learning. And you know,
- 35:03Speaker 7: and you have that as a director, A bunch of
- 35:05Speaker 7: your friends are like, they came and they see you
- 35:06Speaker 7: doing it. They're like, I could this looks like you said, no, motherfucker,
- 35:09Speaker 7: you can't. But what they say that you're paying for
- 35:11Speaker 7: my you're paying for the ten thousand hours. You're not
- 35:13Speaker 7: paying for my time.
- 35:14Speaker 3: You're paying for the time took this like this, you
- 35:17Speaker 3: know to them, you know that the same yeah, yeah,
- 35:19Speaker 3: ten thousand hours.
- 35:21Speaker 7: Yeah. So I had not studied.
- 35:23Speaker 6: So in this suppressed hey, I go to the bookstore
- 35:28Speaker 6: and buy books about filmmaking like this, I've got everything,
- 35:31Speaker 6: hair make, I buy everything everything. Because the beauty of
- 35:34Speaker 6: growing up or group, yeah, growing up as a director
- 35:37Speaker 6: around Hype is that he knew every department.
- 35:39Speaker 7: So to me, that's what a director meant. You know
- 35:41Speaker 7: every department. Hype.
- 35:42Speaker 6: We walk in and talk to the makeup and then
- 35:43Speaker 6: he talked to the hair and have detailed conversations with them,
- 35:46Speaker 6: then walk over here and talk to the art department,
- 35:48Speaker 6: and then talk to the VP. In every single department.
- 35:49Speaker 6: He's having intricate, knowledgeable conversations.
- 35:52Speaker 7: About their department.
- 35:53Speaker 6: So I said, okay, that's what I need to do.
- 35:55Speaker 6: So I got a book on hair and makeup. I
- 35:57Speaker 6: got a books on like I got all these books
- 35:58Speaker 6: and I start.
- 35:59Speaker 7: Reading it and reading it. You're reading it, and then
- 36:01Speaker 7: Cormega now is going to go do this little back.
- 36:04Speaker 7: Then you pay some money for a promo thing. So like, hey,
- 36:07Speaker 7: Cormega wants to do this promo thing. We don't got
- 36:09Speaker 7: a lot of money. X you want to do it?
- 36:11Speaker 6: Somehow I get it because again, I have relationship a
- 36:13Speaker 6: death cham. I've been running packages and I directed a
- 36:15Speaker 6: few things and say, okay, the pennies that they got,
- 36:19Speaker 6: but I got this shot to shoot this thing for Cormega.
- 36:21Speaker 7: And his idea was.
- 36:22Speaker 6: Kind of whatever with the relationships, but we're gonna make
- 36:26Speaker 6: a scene from where visually I was gonna make it
- 36:29Speaker 6: is he wanted to do this interrogation scene from Scarface.
- 36:33Speaker 7: I wanted to look like the interrogation screen scene from Clockers.
- 36:36Speaker 3: If you remember that, that's one of the best movies.
- 36:39Speaker 2: That's one of his favorite movies time when.
- 36:42Speaker 7: It interrogated, everyone's kind of glowing group, right glowing. Yeah,
- 36:45Speaker 7: Malik say E shot that, and again Hype worked with Elik,
- 36:49Speaker 7: so I have this relationship. I call him Aleak and said,
- 36:50Speaker 7: how did you do that? And he gave me some point.
- 36:52Speaker 7: So now I got technical knowledge. We got their scene.
- 36:54Speaker 6: I'm gonna shoot the Cormega scene. And the lesson is
- 36:58Speaker 6: you give thro the clive, give the client what they
- 37:00Speaker 6: asked for, but make it new.
- 37:02Speaker 7: So I made the mine. So I shoot that scene.
- 37:05Speaker 6: But I also did, all right, give me half a record,
- 37:08Speaker 6: and I'm gonna shoot. I'm gonna shoot a little music video.
- 37:11Speaker 6: So I got I shoot his commercial. But then I
- 37:14Speaker 6: shoot a little music video and I'm jel it and
- 37:17Speaker 6: and I'm now as I'm doing it, I remember I
- 37:18Speaker 6: looked at it like, well, scrim that light I stopped.
- 37:21Speaker 6: I go, oh fuck, I said that super technical thing.
- 37:25Speaker 6: And I'm right that all that reading had seeped into
- 37:28Speaker 6: my knowledge. A scrim for filmmakers, a scrim is a
- 37:32Speaker 6: is a disc that so you have a light, a
- 37:34Speaker 6: scrim goes in front of it to knock the light down,
- 37:37Speaker 6: basically a dimmer. But don't have you know what I'm saying, certainly,
- 37:40Speaker 6: so it's a technical film. Shit scrim that light and
- 37:44Speaker 6: oh fuck, and had seeped in.
- 37:46Speaker 7: I'd finally understood it, and that then I finally made
- 37:51Speaker 7: something I liked. I made something good. I had my knowledge.
- 37:53Speaker 7: I was on my way.
- 37:55Speaker 6: The preparing, the studying, the opportunity, all the things. Take
- 38:00Speaker 6: something that's given to me, you can get something that
- 38:02Speaker 6: I can work with. These were the beginning steps of
- 38:05Speaker 6: me really knowing and learning. So it's not just enough
- 38:09Speaker 6: to be around when you get hired.
- 38:11Speaker 7: You got to do good work. You got to constantly
- 38:14Speaker 7: working to improve. And that those were that was the
- 38:18Speaker 7: knowledge based.
- 38:19Speaker 6: So from there I was constantly pulling references, studying this,
- 38:22Speaker 6: studying that, studying other directors.
- 38:24Speaker 7: So just there's a constant watch the people. You want
- 38:29Speaker 7: to achieve a level of success as or whatever it is,
- 38:34Speaker 7: it's your marker, like that person. I want to get
- 38:36Speaker 7: to that level and working the rech that level.
- 38:39Speaker 2: Yeah you said you said that. I've heard you say
- 38:42Speaker 2: this before.
- 38:42Speaker 4: Like a good director can see when a director has
- 38:46Speaker 4: not made a good product right that there are certain
- 38:48Speaker 4: things that a good director will know, uh visually when
- 38:52Speaker 4: they look at at the product. What are some of
- 38:54Speaker 4: those things that you see right away? It's like, you
- 38:55Speaker 4: know what, they didn't take time to do this, or
- 38:57Speaker 4: it's lacking this. What are some of those things I
- 39:00Speaker 4: can tell.
- 39:00Speaker 6: I can tell how intelligent director is by give me
- 39:04Speaker 6: three music videos.
- 39:05Speaker 7: I don know if you're intelligent, I don't know if
- 39:07Speaker 7: you can tell a story. I can tell your visual
- 39:09Speaker 7: uh visual talent. A lot of stuff I can tell
- 39:13Speaker 7: just on the way they did the Rectorence.
- 39:16Speaker 3: So as far as on the business side, so the budget, right,
- 39:21Speaker 3: this is something I was always interested especially I don't
- 39:23Speaker 3: know what the budgets are now, but that's a question.
- 39:25Speaker 3: But before that, so when it was million dollar, this
- 39:28Speaker 3: is nothing that young people might not know. There used
- 39:30Speaker 3: to be like a million dollar movie videos and they
- 39:34Speaker 3: was like spinning like that was like the I think
- 39:36Speaker 3: hype had like the first million dollar was it with
- 39:38Speaker 3: did he on the on the hypnotize? Was that hypnotized?
- 39:41Speaker 2: That was a million I think buster rhymes.
- 39:43Speaker 3: Rhymes yeah, But did he had the million dollar joint
- 39:45Speaker 3: hypnotize and all that. So where do budgets come from.
- 39:49Speaker 3: Does that come out of the artist's pocket or are
- 39:52Speaker 3: the label fronting net definitely get into the recoup thing.
- 39:56Speaker 6: But infamouspectively they sold CDs, so you know it's it's
- 40:01Speaker 6: it's kind of fucked up record companies. They invest in you,
- 40:04Speaker 6: but they want on them. Well it is obvious they
- 40:06Speaker 6: invest but they want the money back. They want their
- 40:07Speaker 6: money back on the investment. But you are the investment,
- 40:09Speaker 6: so you don't see money till they get their money back.
- 40:14Speaker 6: But of course, the way these big corporations.
- 40:16Speaker 7: Do accounting is they never make money back. Like Star
- 40:19Speaker 7: Wars by their account has never made money. Star Wars
- 40:26Speaker 7: that's never made money, right, you know what I'm saying.
- 40:29Speaker 7: You never get No, you don't get no matter how
- 40:31Speaker 7: many records you sell, you just never psen. But you
- 40:33Speaker 7: have to recoup it.
- 40:34Speaker 6: So those million dollar budgets, that's your money essentially, right.
- 40:39Speaker 6: I mean, like if your ship flops, they're not going
- 40:40Speaker 6: to chase you down, like take your house at home,
- 40:43Speaker 6: you know what I'm saying, Like make you work for
- 40:44Speaker 6: the rest they take. They bite the bullet if it
- 40:46Speaker 6: doesn't work out. But if shit works.
- 40:48Speaker 7: Out, they want their money back.
- 40:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:50Speaker 4: So at this time are you are you feeling pressure
- 40:53Speaker 4: to make sure that this product takes off.
- 40:55Speaker 2: Or you just like, you know what, I'm gonna do
- 40:57Speaker 2: my best work.
- 40:58Speaker 6: Yeah, the pressure is in, like I got to show
- 41:00Speaker 6: up for them, the pressures that I got to do
- 41:01Speaker 6: good work for me because I'm competing as other directors.
- 41:03Speaker 7: So directors are already in their own competition, you know
- 41:06Speaker 7: what I mean.
- 41:07Speaker 6: So in their like now there's Hike Williams, Paul Hunter,
- 41:12Speaker 6: Chris Robinson, Liberal X, Benny Boom, Eric White, Dave Myers,
- 41:17Speaker 6: you know what I'm saying.
- 41:19Speaker 2: Forgot that.
- 41:21Speaker 6: See at the bottom of those screens fat cats, and
- 41:25Speaker 6: there's tons of people. So you were all in those
- 41:27Speaker 6: battles together and everyone kind of had like, you know,
- 41:29Speaker 6: me and Chris Robinson was that. That was the back
- 41:31Speaker 6: and forth, hi wayns All Hunter, that was.
- 41:32Speaker 7: The back and fort. You know, everyone had their their back.
- 41:36Speaker 6: And forth that they did, and that's the competition. Because look, man,
- 41:42Speaker 6: if you in those days, if you did a shitty
- 41:44Speaker 6: video for a hit record, you could live off that.
- 41:46Speaker 6: You're gonna get a bunch more work. But eventually people
- 41:49Speaker 6: are gonna see that your videos all.
- 41:50Speaker 7: Suck and you're gonna die off. The key is to
- 41:53Speaker 7: do good work, even for bad songs.
- 41:55Speaker 6: And then when you get a good song and you
- 41:57Speaker 6: do good work, that boom hit song dope video off.
- 42:02Speaker 6: So record you got it bad with a massive video off.
- 42:06Speaker 3: So let me ask you this because it's interesting as
- 42:09Speaker 3: far as like making the comparison between music and movies.
- 42:13Speaker 3: So the all right, so you hype Williams, you guys
- 42:17Speaker 3: at you know, you have your own company, right, So
- 42:19Speaker 3: if somebody wants to commission you did he wants to
- 42:22Speaker 3: commission you for a video, right, and it's a million
- 42:24Speaker 3: dollar budget back, then how does that work? They give
- 42:28Speaker 3: you a million dollars and then you have to break
- 42:30Speaker 3: it down and actually pay item by item and do
- 42:32Speaker 3: it or so you're okay.
- 42:35Speaker 7: So the way it works is king again, listen to
- 42:39Speaker 7: the average way. So you guys have a.
- 42:40Speaker 6: Record together and you're signed to a record label and
- 42:43Speaker 6: they're gonna do a big, big record. We're gonna pay
- 42:46Speaker 6: a million dollars for a million dollars, they probably know
- 42:48Speaker 6: who they're want.
- 42:49Speaker 7: But let's say they're bidding it when you did the job.
- 42:52Speaker 7: So let's say they go to the top three year.
- 42:54Speaker 7: They take your record and they send it to the
- 42:56Speaker 7: top three directors in the game.
- 42:58Speaker 6: We got a million dollars the video, y'all right on it.
- 43:01Speaker 6: So the top three directors all.
- 43:03Speaker 7: Write a treatment.
- 43:04Speaker 6: Oh, you're gonna wake up in the morning, You're gonna
- 43:06Speaker 6: brush your teeth.
- 43:06Speaker 7: And then there's like two girls that come in.
- 43:08Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying, whatever, don't forget the fireworks, Yeah.
- 43:16Speaker 7: Fireworks and girls the cars.
- 43:18Speaker 6: So three treatments you get, and you're gonna read those
- 43:21Speaker 6: treatments and you say, who's the director.
- 43:22Speaker 7: Okay, Hype Williams and he wants to do this, Uh,
- 43:25Speaker 7: Paul Hunter, he wants to do that. So and so.
- 43:27Speaker 6: So there's these things come in and you have to
- 43:29Speaker 6: decide between the level.
- 43:31Speaker 7: Of director and their idea is their idea or so?
- 43:33Speaker 7: But either way, you finally pick one person, Okay, we
- 43:37Speaker 7: want to do this treatment.
- 43:38Speaker 6: That treatment has now become a contract. You said, I'm
- 43:44Speaker 6: getting this, I'm gonna wake up in the morning, and
- 43:46Speaker 6: then the girls and the thing, and then the ferrari
- 43:48Speaker 6: and the but.
- 43:49Speaker 7: That's ilegally minded, okay, and then you get your contract.
- 43:54Speaker 7: In the contract. Even in the contract says, we own up.
- 43:57Speaker 7: This is a work for hire. Don't ask us for
- 43:59Speaker 7: money later, we own this, We own.
- 44:01Speaker 6: This if they basically it says, and they're like if
- 44:05Speaker 6: we discover any galaxy in the universe and they like
- 44:07Speaker 6: hip hop, don't ask this for money. Literally, that's the music.
- 44:11Speaker 6: That's the music, music industry contract.
- 44:14Speaker 7: There's no situation which you get fucked, the more money whatever,
- 44:19Speaker 7: so you and then they give you like if you
- 44:21Speaker 7: have the money, you do it.
- 44:22Speaker 6: You get another bid, you finish it, and then they
- 44:24Speaker 6: give your other bid, and that's how it goes. That
- 44:27Speaker 6: is how a music video gets made.
- 44:29Speaker 3: So now, all right, so we talked about the era
- 44:33Speaker 3: of the million dollar videos. But I'm interested to notice
- 44:36Speaker 3: because it's like back then, I guess the goal was
- 44:39Speaker 3: to be on BT on TRL one O six in
- 44:42Speaker 3: part and now you know, you know, I hate to
- 44:46Speaker 3: reference the kid, but it is what it is, you know,
- 44:49Speaker 3: with the with the Takashi situation and yet.

- 47:42Speaker 3: As you know, even before you got arrested with gumbolling
- 47:44Speaker 3: all of those videos and they was like doing crazy
- 47:47Speaker 3: numbers on YouTube. Now YouTube is the thing right where
- 47:49Speaker 3: it's like now you just the goal is to get
- 47:52Speaker 3: one hundred million views of fifty million views on YouTube.
- 47:54Speaker 3: And especially when he first came out, I don't know
- 47:57Speaker 3: what the wreckt that he was using, but I'm assuming
- 47:58Speaker 3: it was just a neighborhood the direct the Bobby schmurder
- 48:01Speaker 3: like cel phone, right, So I'm assuming that that cut
- 48:04Speaker 3: the budget for videos drastically because now you can make
- 48:10Speaker 3: a video on your iPhone. It might not be the
- 48:12Speaker 3: same quality obviously. So my first question is what's the
- 48:16Speaker 3: top budget now that a record label would pay. And
- 48:21Speaker 3: then the second question is what is the goal now
- 48:24Speaker 3: for it? Has it switched to YouTube, has it switched
- 48:29Speaker 3: to getting clicks on social media? Like how has the
- 48:32Speaker 3: times changed the business of actually producing videos?
- 48:37Speaker 6: I mean, if you now when you make a video,
- 48:39Speaker 6: you making it goes out. Look at the end of
- 48:42Speaker 6: the day, Yeah, Drake could make a video.
- 48:45Speaker 7: With his cell phone. But Drake ain't going to make
- 48:47Speaker 7: a video with your cell phone. Drake wants to trailer.
- 48:49Speaker 7: Drake won strength. He wants the people. If you want
- 48:53Speaker 7: to hire me for these people. So this is my life.
- 48:57Speaker 7: So yeah, I don't do cell phone videos. Feel me.
- 49:01Speaker 7: When I pulled up, I'm doing a production.
- 49:04Speaker 6: There's trailers, and there's trucks, and there's lights, and there's unions,
- 49:08Speaker 6: and there's food, and there's rules, and.
- 49:09Speaker 7: It's gonna cost you hundreds and thousands of dollars.
- 49:12Speaker 6: Right terror Swift wants a trailer and her makeup artist
- 49:15Speaker 6: and her stylist and raver.
- 49:17Speaker 7: They're not doing it with a cell phone. She wants
- 49:19Speaker 7: to look great. She wants to the fucking guy who
- 49:21Speaker 7: just shot the lorial commercial.
- 49:23Speaker 6: That's the DP she wants to shoot her video. Well,
- 49:25Speaker 6: guess what, he don't shoot on cell phones, you know
- 49:27Speaker 6: what I'm saying. So as much as the technology is
- 49:31Speaker 6: great that you can go and do something great and
- 49:33Speaker 6: creative with you and your friends, but at the end
- 49:36Speaker 6: of the day, the reality is the talent. You know,
- 49:39Speaker 6: the cream rises to the top, and as it keeps
- 49:41Speaker 6: on rising, so do the prices.
- 49:44Speaker 7: Right, So if you want that work that looks great.
- 49:46Speaker 7: Maybe you got lucky in your homeway. Around the way
- 49:48Speaker 7: is the next, you know, meet next type, the next
- 49:53Speaker 7: he's gonna he's you You.
- 49:54Speaker 6: It just so happens your homeboy has a career in
- 49:57Speaker 6: filmmaking and he's super talented, gives you something great, that's amazing.
- 50:01Speaker 7: But that's a rare I've seen a lot of these videos,
- 50:04Speaker 7: you know.
- 50:04Speaker 2: Yeah, gum cameras.
- 50:09Speaker 4: Speaking speaking of the of the Drake video at the
- 50:12Speaker 4: end of Life is good, there's like a play.
- 50:14Speaker 7: On on on on.
- 50:16Speaker 2: You know, he's directing it and you're kind of working.
- 50:18Speaker 4: For him, and that's something that that you kind of stresses, well,
- 50:20Speaker 4: the difference between working for the artists and working with
- 50:23Speaker 4: the artist.
- 50:23Speaker 2: You won't you want to talk about that because I
- 50:25Speaker 2: know you highlight that a lot.
- 50:27Speaker 6: Yeah, look, man, it's it's a bit of semantics, but
- 50:30Speaker 6: it's good to understand.
- 50:33Speaker 7: Yeah, we're working with one another, but in reality, you
- 50:35Speaker 7: need to know who you're working for and who you're
- 50:38Speaker 7: working with it.
- 50:40Speaker 2: Yeah, Drake is working with Drake is working with me.
- 50:43Speaker 6: I'm working for Drake, I'm making his product. I'm getting
- 50:49Speaker 6: after I'm done. He takes it and goes with it,
- 50:52Speaker 6: you know what I'm saying.
- 50:53Speaker 7: And yeah, in a proper work, it's a banter. We
- 50:56Speaker 7: go back and forth, and it is. It is a
- 50:58Speaker 7: collaborative thing.
- 50:59Speaker 6: Well, there are people who do forget in these creative
- 51:04Speaker 6: things that get so caught up and.
- 51:05Speaker 7: Making it theirs.
- 51:06Speaker 6: They forget who hired, they forget who they're working for. Yes,
- 51:09Speaker 6: we're collaborating, but my art director isn't working with me.
- 51:14Speaker 7: He's collaborating with me, but he's working for me.
- 51:18Speaker 3: So just to double back. So all right, So even
- 51:22Speaker 3: now today, mid six figures is still a price target
- 51:27Speaker 3: that major artists would pay for a music video still
- 51:32Speaker 3: to this day, like it hasn't dropped to the point
- 51:33Speaker 3: where it's like ten thousand dollars fifteen, Like Drake is
- 51:36Speaker 3: still gonna paying his label. Whoever, Look what these videos do.
- 51:41Speaker 7: Look, life is good. That video sing for a moment?
- 51:48Speaker 7: What would that song?
- 51:49Speaker 6: What would have happened if that record was just it
- 51:51Speaker 6: was just like your video cars and girls and stuff.
- 51:57Speaker 6: You feel me as opposed to just a little bit
- 51:59Speaker 6: of a just a little bit of fun. Because this
- 52:01Speaker 6: is entertainment, It is the entertainment business.
- 52:04Speaker 7: You got you and your girls in the cars. Yeah,
- 52:06Speaker 7: you're living in your fantasy, but are you entertaining me?
- 52:08Speaker 7: Are you putting work in.
- 52:09Speaker 6: It's like going to a show and the guys out
- 52:11Speaker 6: there doing is fucking performing, and you're like, this guy
- 52:13Speaker 6: ain't working, He's just kind of going through the motions
- 52:15Speaker 6: as opposed to someone who's they're working, and then you're like, fuck,
- 52:18Speaker 6: puts on a show. Entertaining the job is entertained. So yeah,
- 52:23Speaker 6: no matter what, when you spend you better be.
- 52:25Speaker 7: Trying to entertain. That's the key, key, key. But at
- 52:27Speaker 7: some point, entertaining people cost fucking money. So I got
- 52:30Speaker 7: an idea. I'm in a garbage truck and then I
- 52:32Speaker 7: work in a fast food place and them all right,
- 52:34Speaker 7: well we got a vacation. I gotta rent that. If
- 52:36Speaker 7: you want that big idea, you gotta pay the big money.
- 52:38Speaker 7: That's just the way it is. And there's certain artists.
- 52:40Speaker 6: That they when you're generating undred millions of news two
- 52:43Speaker 6: hundred million, five hundred million views, you can afford it.
- 52:46Speaker 6: And it's a good investment because you know what I'm saying,
- 52:49Speaker 6: that was a great investment on the future's part. There's
- 52:52Speaker 6: a great investment on this part.
- 52:54Speaker 7: To make a video that big. So, like I said, bro,
- 52:58Speaker 7: it's there's, there's, there's always gonna be the top level.
- 53:01Speaker 7: And at the top level again, Taylor Swift ain't doing
- 53:05Speaker 7: your cell phone video some kid around the way.
- 53:07Speaker 3: So let me ask you this because because it's also
- 53:10Speaker 3: the climate has changed to where you know, it's a
- 53:12Speaker 3: lot of independent artists, probably way more independent artists now
- 53:15Speaker 3: than there were years ago in the nineties or two thousands.
- 53:19Speaker 3: So for an independent from the artists standpoint right, independent
- 53:21Speaker 3: artists not signed to a label. I'm trying to get
- 53:24Speaker 3: my buzz out there. What advice would you get? They
- 53:27Speaker 3: don't have a budget to pay you or you know,
- 53:30Speaker 3: somebody of your caliber, but they still want to you know,
- 53:32Speaker 3: they have good, good quality music and they want to
- 53:35Speaker 3: put some visuals to it. Would you reckon the most.
- 53:38Speaker 6: Talent, find the most talented friend, or find the most
- 53:41Speaker 6: talented person that can work in your budget. Look at
- 53:43Speaker 6: the work and say what I want you know, look
- 53:45Speaker 6: at look at look at their work and say whatever
- 53:47Speaker 6: I want my work to look at this way, we
- 53:49Speaker 6: do the best you can with the money you got
- 53:50Speaker 6: and entertain The key has got to be that are
- 53:52Speaker 6: you entertained is your video you're trying to entertain?
- 53:56Speaker 7: Are you putting your absolute most effort into entertain with
- 53:59Speaker 7: them money that you got because these videos mean something
- 54:04Speaker 7: back in back in the day, Madonna, Lenny Kravitz, Janet Jackson.
- 54:08Speaker 7: There's a certain caliber director they work.
- 54:09Speaker 6: With, a certain caliber, certain budget rings like it says something,
- 54:14Speaker 6: how you visually got it to the world.
- 54:16Speaker 7: And then as you make more money, you.
- 54:18Speaker 6: Should be investing into your advertising. It's not a mistake
- 54:22Speaker 6: that the super Bowl.
- 54:24Speaker 7: You know, technically they can.
- 54:26Speaker 6: Do it with their cell phone, but the competition is entertainment.
- 54:29Speaker 6: During the super Bowl, you better be bringing with your
- 54:31Speaker 6: fucking commercial. Well, you better be bringing it with your
- 54:34Speaker 6: fucking video.
- 54:36Speaker 7: You're in the.
- 54:37Speaker 6: Fucking you're show business. You're in the entertainment industry. That
- 54:41Speaker 6: doesn't stop.
- 54:42Speaker 7: There isn't you know what I'm saying. Yeah, you got
- 54:44Speaker 7: to put this effort in and like I.
- 54:45Speaker 6: Said, when you get when you can invest more money.
- 54:48Speaker 6: And it makes sense because I have people come to
- 54:50Speaker 6: you know, you know I can handle that one hundred, bro,
- 54:54Speaker 6: you know I mean two hundred I got that.
- 54:55Speaker 7: Yeah, But here's the thing, bro, auture doesn't reach.
- 54:58Speaker 6: In his pocket and hand me too. Hundre thousand dollars
- 55:01Speaker 6: a record company said, I can make money with Usher.
- 55:04Speaker 6: I'm putting up the two hundred for the back end.
- 55:08Speaker 7: How it comes back, you know what I'm saying.
- 55:10Speaker 6: Yeah, So there's got to make sense, Like it's not,
- 55:14Speaker 6: because what would happen a lot. There's almost like this
- 55:17Speaker 6: secret industry of rich kids making music videos.
- 55:20Speaker 3: Oh yeah, every now and then.
- 55:21Speaker 6: You know what I'm saying, every now and then, just
- 55:24Speaker 6: some kid's dad is a billionaire and he was so
- 55:27Speaker 6: he's goes.
- 55:27Speaker 7: And so I did want this kid.
- 55:32Speaker 6: Was like this kid's manager, This kid spent on this video,
- 55:36Speaker 6: spent more than Rick Ross had on one of his videos.
- 55:41Speaker 7: That I work.
- 55:41Speaker 11: You feel what I'm saying, Yeah, like big money, a
- 55:44Speaker 11: big proper production with the trucks and the lights and
- 55:46Speaker 11: the profession, like it's a production, and the manager is
- 55:50Speaker 11: Jlo's manager, and like the.
- 55:52Speaker 6: Dad had paid all these big dang equals, so the
- 55:55Speaker 6: best make.
- 55:55Speaker 7: The best everything.
- 55:57Speaker 6: But the key element in the middle was j Lo
- 55:59Speaker 6: doesn't pay everyone to manage her. Jailo has fucking talent,
- 56:03Speaker 6: and everyone comes in because they see the potential. Then
- 56:07Speaker 6: they invest and then they get it. Back, so people
- 56:10Speaker 6: confuse the look for that. They Oh, well, I got
- 56:13Speaker 6: the same manager and I got the same hair makeup,
- 56:15Speaker 6: I got the same director, I got spending more money,
- 56:19Speaker 6: I gotta be a hit.
- 56:20Speaker 3: You know you don't got the talent the sauce and
- 56:23Speaker 3: soul separately, SA sauce soul separately.
- 56:26Speaker 7: Yeah, exactly.
- 56:28Speaker 6: So if just now, let's say you you got some
- 56:31Speaker 6: money in your pocket and you can afford a big
- 56:33Speaker 6: video and a.
- 56:34Speaker 7: Lot of artists.
- 56:36Speaker 6: I see a lot of people pustling thinking if I
- 56:38Speaker 6: spend big money, I'll get I'll get the same results
- 56:41Speaker 6: because I spent the same money.
- 56:42Speaker 7: And it's no.
- 56:44Speaker 6: You might have the money, but the level of artist
- 56:46Speaker 6: you are, you're amount of fans where you're trying to build,
- 56:49Speaker 6: it might make sense for you to make a ten
- 56:50Speaker 6: thousand dollars so phone video and do your best within.
- 56:54Speaker 7: That money to make a great piece of entertainment. You
- 56:56Speaker 7: know what I'm saying. But just go spend one hundreds
- 56:58Speaker 7: of thousands of dollars when you don't have when you
- 57:00Speaker 7: don't have a fan base for that to make sense.
- 57:04Speaker 4: The way up now, you got your start interning with hype,
- 57:08Speaker 4: I'm wondering now are there people that have interned with
- 57:10Speaker 4: you that are now out here just crushing it, like
- 57:12Speaker 4: killing the game.
- 57:13Speaker 2: As far as the video production, Karina Evans.
- 57:17Speaker 6: Karina directed God's Plan, Koreina directed Nice for What. Koreata
- 57:22Speaker 6: is directing episodes of TV shows.
- 57:24Speaker 7: Now she's you know, she's a twenty three year old
- 57:27Speaker 7: light skinned black girl. Right at the time that everyone
- 57:30Speaker 7: was like, we need more women and more women of color.
- 57:33Speaker 3: And then she did God's Plan video Video of the Year,
- 57:37Speaker 3: God's Plan that was that was a tough thing.
- 57:39Speaker 2: Yeah, Video of the Yeah, Nice for What was up
- 57:41Speaker 2: there too?
- 57:41Speaker 3: That was tough.
- 57:42Speaker 6: The credits ont is director X presents a Kreina.
- 57:46Speaker 7: Evans film that.
- 57:49Speaker 2: Toronto Connections.
- 57:49Speaker 3: That's tough. So let me ask you this be cuz
- 57:52Speaker 3: talking about that and you would seem like making a
- 57:58Speaker 3: four minute music video is a lot different than making
- 58:02Speaker 3: a movie, right, So how what's the difference between the
- 58:06Speaker 3: movie side of things? Because you've you've done you have
- 58:08Speaker 3: movies on the ybel as well being a director for
- 58:11Speaker 3: a movie as opposed to being a director for a
- 58:15Speaker 3: music video.
- 58:17Speaker 7: The amount of days you shooting in this video one, two,
- 58:21Speaker 7: maybe three days?
- 58:21Speaker 6: You will be over thirty forty days, fifty maybe one hundred,
- 58:26Speaker 6: depending on the type of movie, but on an average
- 58:28Speaker 6: like thirty to.
- 58:29Speaker 7: Forty days for a proper Hollywood production invest it.
- 58:33Speaker 3: What's the politics though, because al right, so in like
- 58:36Speaker 3: music video, it's like, Okay, Drake wants you reinn, especially
- 58:39Speaker 3: now you got your name, they can kind of demand it.
- 58:41Speaker 3: I would assume on the Hollywood side it's harder, especially
- 58:47Speaker 3: for like New like if you're trying to be do
- 58:48Speaker 3: the independent, trying to get funding, and it just seems
- 58:51Speaker 3: like that from the outside it's more politics.
- 58:55Speaker 6: Yeah, but look, here's the thing that directings understand. The
- 59:02Speaker 6: OSCAR for Best Picture goes to the producer of the movie,
- 59:09Speaker 6: you know what I'm saying, not the director.
- 59:11Speaker 3: So what's the difference. What's what's the difference between the
- 59:13Speaker 3: producer of the movie and director of the movie.
- 59:16Speaker 7: The producers the one who puts the deal together. The
- 59:17Speaker 7: producers the one who can hire, who hires.
- 59:19Speaker 4: The producer can fire you, right, so the producer can
- 59:23Speaker 4: fire the director. I felt like they think that was
- 59:26Speaker 4: Star Wars, correct.
- 59:29Speaker 7: No, George Lucas. George Lucas directed.
- 59:34Speaker 2: The later the later ones.
- 59:35Speaker 4: I think they try to have somebody else do it,
- 59:38Speaker 4: or maybe somebody somebody else did it and the jj
- 59:40Speaker 4: Abrams came back and took over.
- 59:43Speaker 7: Are the producer prints it all together?
- 59:46Speaker 3: So can you can? You can you kind of go
- 59:47Speaker 3: over the hierarchy and and and and movies? Just like
- 59:50Speaker 3: as a producer, it's the director, the casting director, Like,
- 59:53Speaker 3: what's the different roles that are on the movie set?
- 59:56Speaker 7: Well, they say, you have, let's say like super Fly,
- 1:00:00Speaker 7: you have a studio, then you have a.
- 1:00:02Speaker 6: Production company, and then you have the director. So Superfly
- 1:00:05Speaker 6: the producer Joel Silver, he made the Matrix. Yeah, his
- 1:00:10Speaker 6: company talks to my agent, we have this script for Superfly.
- 1:00:14Speaker 6: My agent says, you should have director X look at it.
- 1:00:18Speaker 7: I read their script.
- 1:00:19Speaker 6: I thought it was irresponsibly violent, and I told them
- 1:00:22Speaker 6: I didn't want to do it.
- 1:00:24Speaker 7: One it was irresponsibly violent.
- 1:00:26Speaker 6: And two it wasn't Superfly in this version there the
- 1:00:29Speaker 6: first version of Superfly that I was sent.
- 1:00:32Speaker 7: He wasn't trying to get out.
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: He was just like, all in, just keep trying.
- 1:00:36Speaker 7: To get in deeper.
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: I'm moving.
- 1:00:39Speaker 6: So I'm like and then like irresponsibly by like they're
- 1:00:42Speaker 6: having a shootout on Miami.
- 1:00:44Speaker 7: Beach, and then like and then and not even I
- 1:00:49Speaker 7: hit them.
- 1:00:49Speaker 6: Like though, this is why black kids getting shootouts and
- 1:00:52Speaker 6: shopping malls, because movies like this never.
- 1:00:54Speaker 7: Have consequences, you know what I'm saying, Like they just have.
- 1:00:58Speaker 6: A shootouts and shop They're just shooting out on ninety
- 1:01:00Speaker 6: each and then never say like yo, lo.
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: Not even that.
- 1:01:05Speaker 6: I'm like, are there's no video cameras, there's no surveillance
- 1:01:07Speaker 6: cameras in your.
- 1:01:08Speaker 7: World, but there's no police.
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: That's interesting that what Joe Sieguel knows, Joe Silver, Joe Silver, Yeah, Matrix.
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: It's extremely interesting to me that why he wants to
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: do a remake of Superfly because he loves black Boy, he.
- 1:01:20Speaker 7: Loved those ter.
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: Well.
- 1:01:24Speaker 7: But so now okay, So then I find out what.
- 1:01:27Speaker 6: What had happened was that the script they sent me
- 1:01:29Speaker 6: wasn't actually Superfly, but they got the rights to superflyes,
- 1:01:31Speaker 6: so they just put the name. And I'm like, I'm
- 1:01:34Speaker 6: not I'm not one the level of isolence doing that.
- 1:01:38Speaker 6: Two of this isn't Superfly.
- 1:01:41Speaker 7: They called me back to.
- 1:01:42Speaker 6: We want to make the movie you want to make.
- 1:01:44Speaker 6: I said, all right, well we're making Superfly. So if
- 1:01:47Speaker 6: you watch the old Superfly and my Superfly. It's Superflies.
- 1:01:50Speaker 6: All the same characters are back. It's the same story.
- 1:01:53Speaker 6: We move and twist some things around, but the things
- 1:01:55Speaker 6: we move and twist around are still respectful of the original.
- 1:01:59Speaker 6: I treat it like Hoods Shakespeare, right, because I got
- 1:02:04Speaker 6: hired to remake Superfly.
- 1:02:06Speaker 7: So I'm going to remake it right. And then what
- 1:02:08Speaker 7: we did on the violence side is that we made
- 1:02:10Speaker 7: it a little cartoon. You know, the bad guys were white,
- 1:02:14Speaker 7: they have white guns. It's it's it's an action. It's
- 1:02:16Speaker 7: a Joel Silver action, a Wick.
- 1:02:18Speaker 6: It's fast and furious, and we deserve to have mindless,
- 1:02:22Speaker 6: stupid movies. You feel what I'm saying, Like people, no
- 1:02:26Speaker 6: one wants it John Wick, and it's like, oh my god,
- 1:02:28Speaker 6: what what message is this sent to the youth and
- 1:02:30Speaker 6: the Russian American community there, They's just then nigga can
- 1:02:36Speaker 6: beat up everybody and bad guys are fucking bad and
- 1:02:38Speaker 6: there's not you know what I'm saying, like, it's it's
- 1:02:40Speaker 6: this imaginary world, well Superfly, Yeah, it's it's drugs in
- 1:02:45Speaker 6: the same way, fast and furious does heists?
- 1:02:47Speaker 7: You feel me? There's no there's no good advice for a.
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: Drug dealer in Superfly, no underlining, no underlining.
- 1:02:58Speaker 7: That's a good idea, nobody you got something right. Instead,
- 1:03:05Speaker 7: things become so what what what? What Control was was
- 1:03:10Speaker 7: a symbol. There are symbolic of flashy drug uples. You
- 1:03:14Speaker 7: know what I'm saying. You live in Cleveland and you
- 1:03:16Speaker 7: ain't got a job, but you got a fucking braith
- 1:03:20Speaker 7: wearing all the white all the time with you know
- 1:03:23Speaker 7: what I'm saying. Like, and I remember there was like
- 1:03:26Speaker 7: on Instagram, there was one page. I haven't seen him
- 1:03:28Speaker 7: in a while, man, I guess what happened. They're like
- 1:03:30Speaker 7: the coke Import Boys was the name of their crew,
- 1:03:32Speaker 7: Like the Import Boys. I'm like, really pure sports cars.
- 1:03:37Speaker 7: The Import Boys. I'm like, y'all, why don't you just drive.
- 1:03:41Speaker 6: Yourself to jail? So that that was what still Control represented.
- 1:03:47Speaker 6: But again he does come food, his hair is straight.
- 1:03:50Speaker 6: I didn't want kids to look at Uba Fly and
- 1:03:52Speaker 6: see their world that.
- 1:03:54Speaker 7: Looks like my life. That looks like my world. And
- 1:03:55Speaker 7: then the subconscious brain starts going, you know, like the
- 1:03:58Speaker 7: wrong movie gets hot in the hood, the hood gets hot.
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: Nice carface changed the whole change everything.
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: Yeah, remember when the wires poppably done me.
- 1:04:09Speaker 6: It was inspirational to you know, like I didn't want
- 1:04:12Speaker 6: to do that. So ours is a fun, dumb it's
- 1:04:15Speaker 6: and it's again it's a Joel Silver action movie.
- 1:04:17Speaker 7: Right. He doesn't have the social conscious that we have.
- 1:04:19Speaker 7: You try here and there, but he must make a
- 1:04:21Speaker 7: fun movie because he doesn't have a social conscious.
- 1:04:23Speaker 6: When he made Predator, he wasn't putting the weight of
- 1:04:25Speaker 6: the world and is back when he made The Matrix.
- 1:04:27Speaker 7: He was people kicked them, kick people in the face
- 1:04:29Speaker 7: and beat up the bad guys. And it's fun.
- 1:04:32Speaker 6: Super Flies fun as fun. It's a great enjoyable movie.
- 1:04:35Speaker 6: It's really a movie for teenage boys.
- 1:04:38Speaker 7: Fifteen year old you seeing Superflies, do you imagine how
- 1:04:40Speaker 7: your brain would fry?
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: Girls, the car of the house and the like.
- 1:04:45Speaker 7: It's a great time for that.
- 1:04:47Speaker 11: And that's what that is.
- 1:04:48Speaker 7: But again, the politics of that is, I'm directing a
- 1:04:52Speaker 7: Joel Silver picture. Joel Silver isn't producing a director X film,
- 1:04:55Speaker 7: if that makes sense, the same.
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: Thing I'm working those right, you're working for him with me.
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: Yeah, that's important for people to understand because it's like
- 1:05:03Speaker 3: a lot of times they don't understand anything like a director,
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: especially a movie director. It's like they have full rights
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: over everything, and and it's like they're they're they're like
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: a quarterback. You got the chair, but you still got
- 1:05:14Speaker 3: a coach that can kind of push and and and
- 1:05:17Speaker 3: make different things. And so it's like you got a
- 1:05:21Speaker 3: owner who can come down exactly. There's a whole situation. Yeah, definitely.
- 1:05:28Speaker 4: I got a question as just as a fan of
- 1:05:31Speaker 4: music and of movies as well, Like we always in
- 1:05:33Speaker 4: our heads we hear a song and we're like, damn,
- 1:05:36Speaker 4: like we kind of pictured the videos in our head
- 1:05:38Speaker 4: of how it should go. Has there ever been a
- 1:05:40Speaker 4: video or a song that you were like, damn, I
- 1:05:43Speaker 4: wish I had the opportunity to make that.
- 1:05:46Speaker 7: Some of them.
- 1:05:47Speaker 6: More so, there's like songs that they didn't pick me
- 1:05:50Speaker 6: and then they chose someone else and it was horrible.
- 1:05:52Speaker 7: I'm like, man, I would have gave you the fucking
- 1:05:54Speaker 7: you know what I'm saying.
- 1:06:01Speaker 3: So let let me ask you this some Toronto once again,
- 1:06:04Speaker 3: shout out to Toronto. Toronto not only has a crazy
- 1:06:07Speaker 3: music scene right now with Tory Lanez Drake, the Weekend,
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: a bunch of people, and they just won the NBA
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: Championship two years ago.
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: Right last ye last year.
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: Yeah, but a little known fact Toronto has a very
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: big movie industry, very big movie industry in Toronto. What's
- 1:06:26Speaker 3: the scene right now in Toronto is for well, obviously
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: now COVID everything is shut down, but for up and
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: coming entrepreneurs, speaking specifically for people in Toronto right now,
- 1:06:35Speaker 3: are there opportunities in the music I mean, in the
- 1:06:40Speaker 3: the movie industry or is that kind of who you
- 1:06:43Speaker 3: know Hollywood type of vibe.
- 1:06:46Speaker 7: It's how you get in. It's very.
- 1:06:49Speaker 6: It's hard to get but you gotta find your way
- 1:06:51Speaker 6: in the same way that and everyone gets in a
- 1:06:53Speaker 6: different way. Maybe you know someone you gotta find your
- 1:06:57Speaker 6: way in. This is the film industry.
- 1:06:58Speaker 7: Beca's just not an offense you can walk up to.
- 1:07:01Speaker 7: But you have the Internet. I found hype with a magazine.
- 1:07:06Speaker 6: And mail in a phone, fucking determination, So you have
- 1:07:11Speaker 6: the motherfucking Internet.
- 1:07:12Speaker 7: If you can't figure this ship out, you're not gonna
- 1:07:14Speaker 7: survive on set. That'd be very real with you. This
- 1:07:17Speaker 7: is not hey, do it for me business. This is
- 1:07:20Speaker 7: figure the ship that's figured it out. Because when I
- 1:07:23Speaker 7: go to work, there is.
- 1:07:25Speaker 6: Literally a stopwatch with thousands, tens of thousands of dollars
- 1:07:29Speaker 6: connected to it.
- 1:07:30Speaker 7: And if I go past this line, then it.
- 1:07:33Speaker 6: Starts to stack and then double and then triple, and
- 1:07:35Speaker 6: then there's pedal. There's there's police that come along and
- 1:07:38Speaker 6: say move this truck and turn it like it is.
- 1:07:42Speaker 6: High levels of responsibility in your and getting shipped done.
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: Yeah, so you.
- 1:07:48Speaker 7: Can't figure out how to get it. You're not gonna
- 1:07:50Speaker 7: know how to fucking maneuver ship.
- 1:07:52Speaker 4: So you get a timeline on on on your production,
- 1:07:55Speaker 4: and if you don't meet that timeline that there's fees.
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: That you have to pay out of your pocket.
- 1:08:00Speaker 7: The production does. But again, if the production has to pay.
- 1:08:03Speaker 6: If if my call time is at eight and we
- 1:08:06Speaker 6: said we're gonna be packed up and driving.
- 1:08:08Speaker 7: Away at at eight am.
- 1:08:10Speaker 6: We're gonna show up and at eight pm we're gonna
- 1:08:12Speaker 6: be done. But then a PM comes around and not
- 1:08:15Speaker 6: only am I not packing my trucks, I'm nowhere near
- 1:08:17Speaker 6: the packing my trucks.
- 1:08:18Speaker 7: I need two more hours. Those two more hours, well,
- 1:08:20Speaker 7: we made a deal that now I'm going in the overtime.
- 1:08:23Speaker 7: Overtime lasts as long. But what if I need more
- 1:08:25Speaker 7: time pass to overtime, Well, now I can go to
- 1:08:27Speaker 7: the double over time.
- 1:08:28Speaker 6: I go to the triple overtime, then I get a
- 1:08:29Speaker 6: meal penalty. Well, everyone's supposed to eat. Now I can't
- 1:08:32Speaker 6: stop to eat because we're almost done. Okay, Well, if
- 1:08:34Speaker 6: we're not gonna eat, I get a we get mealk.
- 1:08:36Speaker 7: Now everyone gets more money. You feel what I'm saying.
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: This is how this shit works.
- 1:08:40Speaker 7: It's there's consequences.
- 1:08:42Speaker 6: So again, if you can't figure out how to get
- 1:08:44Speaker 6: into the film industry, you're not gonna survive in.
- 1:08:47Speaker 7: The film industry. I don't know. I wish I could
- 1:08:51Speaker 7: tell you there's some way, but you've got to figure
- 1:08:53Speaker 7: this out. This part of getting in this is did
- 1:08:57Speaker 7: you ever in school in grade school to the incubate
- 1:08:59Speaker 7: A and then you see like a chick?
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, and do you remember the.
- 1:09:04Speaker 7: Teacher said, don't help them out of the A?
- 1:09:07Speaker 6: Right, If a chick can't make it out of the A,
- 1:09:10Speaker 6: it can't make it out of the A if you
- 1:09:12Speaker 6: help it out.
- 1:09:13Speaker 7: There's a double If it's not strong enough to get.
- 1:09:15Speaker 6: It can't make it out, and it wouldn't be if
- 1:09:17Speaker 6: you help it out and it wasn't strong enough to
- 1:09:19Speaker 6: make it out, it wouldn't be strong enough to live
- 1:09:21Speaker 6: and then if you help it out, if it was
- 1:09:23Speaker 6: strong enough to make it out.
- 1:09:24Speaker 7: But you helped it out, it didn't develop the strength
- 1:09:27Speaker 7: it needed to live, and it's going to die as well.
- 1:09:29Speaker 7: So there's no scenario and you helping that ship out
- 1:09:32Speaker 7: of the a that is good for the chick.
- 1:09:35Speaker 3: Now, I'm glad you said that because I sat down
- 1:09:36Speaker 3: on Instagram a few weeks ago, like, sometimes you can
- 1:09:38Speaker 3: actually hurt somebody by trying to help them. Sometimes it's
- 1:09:41Speaker 3: like you you're you're enabling people and you're helping them,
- 1:09:44Speaker 3: You're you're actually hurting them because they're just they're skipping
- 1:09:48Speaker 3: vital steps that are needed, Like you're taking them from
- 1:09:51Speaker 3: point A to point Z, but by doing that, they're skipping.
- 1:09:54Speaker 4: That journey and once by themselves, they won't so long.
- 1:09:57Speaker 7: Yeah, it's the egg analogy, and it is the one
- 1:10:00Speaker 7: to use. It's the one for these kids. If I
- 1:10:02Speaker 7: help you, if you're good enough to do this, you
- 1:10:05Speaker 7: can do it on your own.
- 1:10:06Speaker 6: And if you're good enough to do this and I
- 1:10:08Speaker 6: help you, I'm gonna hurt you. You're not that, like
- 1:10:11Speaker 6: you said, those steps you're gonna miss.
- 1:10:13Speaker 7: The egg analogy is the best analogy which is like
- 1:10:15Speaker 7: I don't like saying too much about what I would do.
- 1:10:18Speaker 7: You know what I'm saying. I can tell you my
- 1:10:19Speaker 7: story about what I did. Yeah, you figure it out now. Now.
- 1:10:22Speaker 3: I respect that. I respect that because it's like everybody's
- 1:10:24Speaker 3: journey is different, and your journey that you that you
- 1:10:27Speaker 3: did twenty years ago is completely different than somebody that's
- 1:10:29Speaker 3: gonna do it right now in twenty twenty.
- 1:10:31Speaker 6: You gotta get out of the egg on your own.
- 1:10:33Speaker 6: Once you're out of the egg and I see you
- 1:10:34Speaker 6: on set, well, now we're in a different conversation. You
- 1:10:36Speaker 6: made it here, You're good enough to be here.
- 1:10:38Speaker 7: You're in the league.
- 1:10:39Speaker 6: Now, now this a thing going on, you.
- 1:10:41Speaker 7: Know what I mean. But till then that that they
- 1:10:45Speaker 7: don't just handle you shit and you should have want it.
- 1:10:47Speaker 7: It's not gonna I get the dream, bro. I was young.
- 1:10:51Speaker 7: I remember when I was dropping a package off the
- 1:10:53Speaker 7: puff and I had my tape.
- 1:10:56Speaker 6: Hey can I show you something? And you look now,
- 1:11:01Speaker 6: I at like this video opera and like this shut
- 1:11:05Speaker 6: it on film, like I'd come up. It wasn't my
- 1:11:06Speaker 6: old though, you know what I'm saying. It was some
- 1:11:09Speaker 6: artsy fartsy cool kids shit and he looked at it.
- 1:11:14Speaker 6: What's your name?
- 1:11:15Speaker 7: Little x cool?
- 1:11:19Speaker 6: Later on in the future we worked together and did
- 1:11:21Speaker 6: kind of all I've done, all kinds of stuff apof
- 1:11:23Speaker 6: and you know what I'm saying, he is a great
- 1:11:25Speaker 6: inspirational guy.
- 1:11:26Speaker 7: Again, relationships that you have twenty years later, you know
- 1:11:28Speaker 7: what I'm saying, twenty years later, still know the epact.
- 1:11:31Speaker 7: But he didn't see my work. He said, oh my god,
- 1:11:33Speaker 7: oh the like And of course I wanted that.
- 1:11:36Speaker 6: Who wouldn't want to be fucking treated like a genius.
- 1:11:39Speaker 6: But it doesn't always happen that way. Sometimes the guy
- 1:11:41Speaker 6: will and later you don't know how this is all
- 1:11:44Speaker 6: gonna work out. But following your interests, following your passion,
- 1:11:49Speaker 6: studying your craft, Altill now like Alton now, I still watch,
- 1:11:56Speaker 6: especially on YouTube.
- 1:11:58Speaker 7: YouTube if you want it to be is.
- 1:11:59Speaker 6: A film's will Now people do very in depth, especially
- 1:12:03Speaker 6: now that ideal in story. For me, the new level
- 1:12:05Speaker 6: is story structure, character development, that the things that make
- 1:12:10Speaker 6: you want to watch.
- 1:12:10Speaker 7: The show past the visual and I.
- 1:12:13Speaker 6: Study it and I study it and I study it,
- 1:12:15Speaker 6: and YouTube has tons of great people that have really
- 1:12:17Speaker 6: insightful ideas about this.
- 1:12:19Speaker 7: And then I also read the books about it, and
- 1:12:21Speaker 7: I do my homework. And at this time in.
- 1:12:23Speaker 6: Quarantine, I've been studying my craft. If I'm bored, I
- 1:12:28Speaker 6: can watch these videos about my craft. So following your
- 1:12:32Speaker 6: interest studying your craft, hustling.
- 1:12:35Speaker 7: You know what I mean, and just and doing that work,
- 1:12:38Speaker 7: so then you're ready when that moment happens, then you're ready.
- 1:12:42Speaker 7: But uh, and that's that and that's that's information I
- 1:12:46Speaker 7: can give you. As far as like how I would
- 1:12:48Speaker 7: use Google, I'm not telling a like that, how I'm
- 1:12:51Speaker 7: already ship if you ain't. If you had to figured
- 1:12:54Speaker 7: out that, you should have your shit on your phone?
- 1:13:01Speaker 3: So what what's what's the next? What's next for you?
- 1:13:03Speaker 3: As far as like, are you moving more into the movies? Netflix? Streaming?
- 1:13:08Speaker 3: Like music? Where do you see your own personal look?
- 1:13:13Speaker 6: I'm working on, you know, all the stuff I'm a
- 1:13:15Speaker 6: director out of all the categories, right, So there's movie stuff,
- 1:13:18Speaker 6: there's goals and conversations, and TV. There's goals and conversations,
- 1:13:22Speaker 6: and music videos, goals and conversations.
- 1:13:23Speaker 7: Commercial goals and conversations, right, so all this stuff is
- 1:13:27Speaker 7: going on.
- 1:13:27Speaker 6: What I'm really happy about is that on the commercial side,
- 1:13:31Speaker 6: I did a short film for Pere Moss.
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: You know wait, we went to this fashion show in Brooklyn.
- 1:13:38Speaker 3: What's his name, Kirby, Kirby Kurbye shouts to Valencia. We
- 1:13:42Speaker 3: went to his fashion show.
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: Amazing fashion showk Yeah, amazing.
- 1:13:47Speaker 6: So I wrote and directed a short film for him.
- 1:13:49Speaker 6: Technically it's a fashion film, and here we go. This
- 1:13:52Speaker 6: was a low budget project. This was a low budget project. Okay,
- 1:13:56Speaker 6: we had nowhere near the kind of money. But here's
- 1:14:00Speaker 6: the entertained. Here was the passion, the studying of story structure,
- 1:14:04Speaker 6: the Kirby and I really working together, working together.
- 1:14:10Speaker 7: Yeah, technically I'm still working for him though. The money
- 1:14:14Speaker 7: is not the thing that makes it. It's his thing,
- 1:14:17Speaker 7: you feel me.
- 1:14:18Speaker 6: Yeah, But we're collaborating doing this thing together and it's
- 1:14:22Speaker 6: and that was really one of the best client uh director.
- 1:14:26Speaker 6: That experience was really the people working together to make
- 1:14:29Speaker 6: something better. Always no one gets that's mine. And now
- 1:14:32Speaker 6: I get to just like to get people that want
- 1:14:35Speaker 6: to force their decision as opposed to going with the
- 1:14:37Speaker 6: best decision do.
- 1:14:40Speaker 4: I just saw him with director of credits. He just
- 1:14:42Speaker 4: did Wallet's new video.
- 1:14:45Speaker 3: So we made this, We make this thing.
- 1:14:47Speaker 7: I look, it's not it's called Seven Mothers. You could
- 1:14:50Speaker 7: check out it's also on my page.
- 1:14:51Speaker 6: But Pierre Ma's Seven Mothers and people cry when they
- 1:14:57Speaker 6: watched this thing all the time, constantly. Right, It's a
- 1:15:01Speaker 6: story about Kirby, his mother dad when he was seven
- 1:15:04Speaker 6: and these well seven or eight, but then these seven
- 1:15:07Speaker 6: women raised him.
- 1:15:09Speaker 7: And it's a story about family and but based in
- 1:15:12Speaker 7: black culture and the church. And I had something I
- 1:15:15Speaker 7: wanted to say.
- 1:15:16Speaker 6: It's something I show students because the story structure, it
- 1:15:18Speaker 6: is textbook story structure.
- 1:15:20Speaker 7: Like I'm saying, so all these things, and we made
- 1:15:24Speaker 7: the very low budget thing.
- 1:15:25Speaker 6: And then when award season comes because it commercial is
- 1:15:28Speaker 6: big on awards, awards a big part of commercials, and
- 1:15:31Speaker 6: we're getting nominated for really prestigious awards.
- 1:15:35Speaker 7: We're winning prestigious awards that our little low budget short.
- 1:15:41Speaker 6: Film is nominated beside Apple and Spotify and tinderft like big,
- 1:15:48Speaker 6: over the top, big budget projects and here's this one
- 1:15:51Speaker 6: little fashion film that we did for probably a third.
- 1:15:56Speaker 7: Of the money. But the philosophy be all the things
- 1:15:59Speaker 7: which to do, you.
- 1:16:00Speaker 6: Know, entertained and entertaining people doesn't always mean it's fucking
- 1:16:05Speaker 6: a fucking show and you feel great sometimes the entertainment
- 1:16:07Speaker 6: is breaking your heart and making you think about.
- 1:16:10Speaker 7: Someone you love and think about how a spirit can
- 1:16:15Speaker 7: still speak to you.
- 1:16:15Speaker 6: From beyond the grade, and how the universe brings things together.
- 1:16:18Speaker 6: You know what I'm saying, That can still be entertainment.
- 1:16:20Speaker 6: You're really tugging on your heart springs.
- 1:16:22Speaker 7: So we're there the entertain We're here to do that
- 1:16:23Speaker 7: work and all that studying. And it ain't easy to
- 1:16:26Speaker 7: go being nominated.
- 1:16:28Speaker 6: Becauside an Apple project or Christian Dior or you know,
- 1:16:31Speaker 6: Tom Ford or this ain't little brands, This ain't little things.
- 1:16:35Speaker 6: But with the right philosophy, with the right approach, with
- 1:16:39Speaker 6: the right heart, with the right collaboration, with all these
- 1:16:41Speaker 6: things going the right way, you're a little.
- 1:16:43Speaker 7: Private that can make big waves. And so that is
- 1:16:46Speaker 7: something as of you know with Superfly, the TV shows what.
- 1:16:51Speaker 3: I've got a lot going on.
- 1:16:52Speaker 6: Man, I'm a working director, but it's projects like that
- 1:16:55Speaker 6: that really means something, really means something heartfelt. And then
- 1:16:59Speaker 6: the payoff isn't in the pay and we weren't calculating it,
- 1:17:02Speaker 6: we weren't making.
- 1:17:03Speaker 3: Like God, we just made it and then the return
- 1:17:08Speaker 3: was at so so before we wrap it up, I
- 1:17:10Speaker 3: wanted to talk. I know Troy had questions about.
- 1:17:13Speaker 4: The Yeah, yeah, because some of the things you're doing now, man,
- 1:17:17Speaker 4: I thought it was just amazing operation prefrontal cortex. I
- 1:17:21Speaker 4: know that's something that that you're very passionate about and
- 1:17:23Speaker 4: studying the brain studies. And you know there there were
- 1:17:27Speaker 4: some events that happened in your life that kind of
- 1:17:28Speaker 4: triggered it as well. And I heard that there's work
- 1:17:31Speaker 4: that you're doing in prisons and you want to incorporate
- 1:17:34Speaker 4: in schools. And that's something that I've seen in my
- 1:17:35Speaker 4: school in my district for sure, is like, uh, we
- 1:17:38Speaker 4: have like this meditation thing. We call it the Mindfulness
- 1:17:40Speaker 4: Room and hope hopefully it becomes something that that gets
- 1:17:44Speaker 4: picked up by other school districts because it is helpful
- 1:17:47Speaker 4: for kids.
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: I wanted you to talk about your experience with that.
- 1:17:51Speaker 7: I mean, look, George Floyd is I think it might
- 1:17:54Speaker 7: be his last.
- 1:17:54Speaker 6: Video with talking about the violence in our community. And yeah,
- 1:18:00Speaker 6: we have a beef with the police.
- 1:18:02Speaker 7: The whole world has. You can see the police are.
- 1:18:04Speaker 8: Out of control.
- 1:18:06Speaker 7: Well we got something else. Our young men are killing
- 1:18:09Speaker 7: each other everywhere you go.
- 1:18:10Speaker 6: Toronto is on fire with the with the gun violence
- 1:18:15Speaker 6: and they don't care. Literally, the last shoot the day
- 1:18:18Speaker 6: that George Floyd was killed a twenty one year.
- 1:18:21Speaker 7: Old and Kudini got killed out here.
- 1:18:23Speaker 6: When you see the security footage when they start shooting
- 1:18:25Speaker 6: at each other, there's a six year old standing in between.
- 1:18:31Speaker 7: Downtown Toronto in the middle of the day. Film me. Yeah,
- 1:18:35Speaker 7: and it's that fucking series. But when we've done police,
- 1:18:42Speaker 7: we've done all the programs. And I was shot myself
- 1:18:46Speaker 7: in my back that the bullet went through two people
- 1:18:48Speaker 7: and hit me. Luckily I shifted my body weight.
- 1:18:52Speaker 6: Might have been the difference between a whole other kind
- 1:18:55Speaker 6: of life of regular hospital visits and what happened to me.
- 1:18:58Speaker 7: They cut it out and I walked out. You know
- 1:19:00Speaker 7: what I'm saying. So I started I started pulling together.
- 1:19:06Speaker 7: I'm science minded. We could say I'm interested in science.
- 1:19:09Speaker 6: And I remember I'm reading something one day and I
- 1:19:10Speaker 6: come across some some something in some science journal and say, oh,
- 1:19:16Speaker 6: the criminal mind isn't like the normal brain.
- 1:19:17Speaker 7: The criminal brain and the normal brain aren't the same.
- 1:19:19Speaker 6: And I read it and it says the prefrontal cortex
- 1:19:22Speaker 6: is smaller, that's decision making, and the amygdala is bigger.
- 1:19:28Speaker 7: And that's emotional control.
- 1:19:30Speaker 6: So and then I'm reading something else and it says
- 1:19:32Speaker 6: something about children who are abused and something happens to
- 1:19:35Speaker 6: their brain and the prefrontal cortex is smaller. And then
- 1:19:38Speaker 6: I read something else and it's meditation changes their brain
- 1:19:42Speaker 6: and makes your prefront.
- 1:19:42Speaker 7: The cortex figure and it makes your mikdala smaller. I'm
- 1:19:45Speaker 7: hold on, that's the opposite.
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: Of the violent group.
- 1:19:48Speaker 6: And I start and I gather these studies together, and
- 1:19:51Speaker 6: it's very very clear childhood abuse to neglect change how.
- 1:19:54Speaker 7: The brain develops. Children who are abused to neglect that.
- 1:19:56Speaker 6: Their prefrontal cortex is too small, their migdala is too large.
- 1:20:00Speaker 7: Chronic stress changes the brain.
- 1:20:02Speaker 6: People who are are stressed out, their prefrontal cortext shrinks.
- 1:20:07Speaker 6: There a magdalah gets big, violent and aggressive people their
- 1:20:11Speaker 6: brain as distinct differences in the average person. Their prefrontal
- 1:20:14Speaker 6: cortex is too small, their mikela is too big.
- 1:20:17Speaker 3: And the prefrontal cortex is the part that decides decision making.
- 1:20:23Speaker 7: Right, yes, and the and the migdala is the part
- 1:20:25Speaker 7: of the brain.
- 1:20:27Speaker 3: That emotion emotions yeah, And.
- 1:20:31Speaker 7: It's also the part of the brain that decides to
- 1:20:33Speaker 7: fight or flight.
- 1:20:34Speaker 3: So this is when people people are people are making
- 1:20:37Speaker 3: decisions based off of emotion and not rational decisions. If
- 1:20:39Speaker 3: they have you, it's it's very interesting part.
- 1:20:42Speaker 7: Of the real decision making. The brain filters it. But
- 1:20:47Speaker 7: your migdala.
- 1:20:47Speaker 6: Decides if we're gonna if I'm gonna if I'm gonna
- 1:20:49Speaker 6: run away, or I'm gonna hit that you know that
- 1:20:51Speaker 6: blackout moment and just react because not only does the
- 1:20:54Speaker 6: magdala make the decision, it also can turn off your
- 1:20:56Speaker 6: prefrontal cortex, so literally you're not making a decision right, So.
- 1:21:01Speaker 7: This is what's happening.
- 1:21:02Speaker 6: And then if you are constantly stressed, say you live
- 1:21:05Speaker 6: in a bad neighborhood or you have a dangerous job,
- 1:21:07Speaker 6: he says, we.
- 1:21:08Speaker 7: Live in danger all the time. We don't got time
- 1:21:10Speaker 7: that you can figure out, figure shit out.
- 1:21:12Speaker 6: We go to fight or we're either gonna run or
- 1:21:13Speaker 6: we're gonna fucking fight. It locks it in the hippocampus
- 1:21:17Speaker 6: is learning and memory. The amygdala will lock in your.
- 1:21:21Speaker 7: Fight or fight response, so you just fight it. You
- 1:21:24Speaker 7: feel me, So there you go. But meditation does the opposite.
- 1:21:28Speaker 6: It gives volume to your prefunctal cortext enshrinks your amignalant
- 1:21:31Speaker 6: and gets volume to your hippocampus all the parts of
- 1:21:33Speaker 6: the brain. When you meditate, the parts of your brains
- 1:21:35Speaker 6: that should be big get The parts of your brain
- 1:21:38Speaker 6: that should be small get small. Like working out, you
- 1:21:40Speaker 6: work out all the time, the muscles that should get
- 1:21:42Speaker 6: you know, the muscles get big, the waste gets small,
- 1:21:45Speaker 6: the stomach gets small.
- 1:21:46Speaker 7: You know what I'm saying.
- 1:21:47Speaker 6: It's the beauty of exercising. This is exercising your brain. Okay,
- 1:21:53Speaker 6: and you do it through meditation. When you meditate, then
- 1:21:55Speaker 6: when you have big meditation, like in the schools, violent schools,
- 1:21:57Speaker 6: everything changes.
- 1:21:58Speaker 7: The suspension, stuff, lent.
- 1:22:00Speaker 6: Stuffs, the grades go up, the physicality all the time high.
- 1:22:03Speaker 6: You know, maximum security prisons, the most violent prison in Mexico.
- 1:22:07Speaker 6: They start meditating, the violence goes down, their awareness rises up,
- 1:22:10Speaker 6: all these great things.
- 1:22:11Speaker 7: Even with police officers meditate, they de escalate more, they
- 1:22:15Speaker 7: don't they're not as violent.
- 1:22:16Speaker 6: This is to reducing the violence in our in our community,
- 1:22:24Speaker 6: in general, in our cities.
- 1:22:25Speaker 7: We need so our plan because Operation Reefunts or Cortex.
- 1:22:29Speaker 6: Our mission is to reduce violence, gun violence, mass violent,
- 1:22:33Speaker 6: police violence with meditation We need to be in our schools.
- 1:22:37Speaker 6: Our schools saves our next generation. Right, we've got a school,
- 1:22:41Speaker 6: we got the worst.
- 1:22:42Speaker 7: Good of the world. They start meditating, that school's going
- 1:22:44Speaker 7: to change. We've changed the generation. Once those kids have
- 1:22:47Speaker 7: those tools, because once we get past.
- 1:22:49Speaker 6: The idea or past the fact that they're that the
- 1:22:53Speaker 6: the shape of their brain no longer is susceptible to
- 1:22:57Speaker 6: violence and aggression. Then we start getting into the use
- 1:23:00Speaker 6: of existing knowledge, better memory, better friendships, better social skills,
- 1:23:03Speaker 6: better physicality.
- 1:23:04Speaker 7: They start becoming better, fuller, happier human beings from the meditation.
- 1:23:09Speaker 7: You know what I'm saying. We need to get into our.
- 1:23:11Speaker 6: Community groups, into communities that are affected by violence.
- 1:23:14Speaker 7: Not every we all know this. The whole hood isn't
- 1:23:17Speaker 7: full of fucking gunmen. But you grew up around it.
- 1:23:20Speaker 7: Sh It's dangerous. You've lost friends. You've been too many
- 1:23:23Speaker 7: close calls. You know, shit like this. You've lost friends.
- 1:23:26Speaker 6: There's a lot of trauma living in these neighborhoods because
- 1:23:30Speaker 6: of the violence.
- 1:23:31Speaker 7: Meditation can help you with this. So we need the
- 1:23:32Speaker 7: community groups. We need the correctional system, and that is
- 1:23:37Speaker 7: you know, we need to be in those prisons helping
- 1:23:39Speaker 7: these guys figure the shit out so they can actually
- 1:23:41Speaker 7: come out of jail and live a good life. Everyone's
- 1:23:43Speaker 7: supposed to be able to live a good life. That's
- 1:23:45Speaker 7: the dream, right, not just being rich and falling, but
- 1:23:47Speaker 7: that you live a fulfilling life that you you know.
- 1:23:52Speaker 7: And then there is the.
- 1:23:53Speaker 6: Streets which needs another program. It's a mentorship called program
- 1:23:57Speaker 6: called Advanced Piece to bring that in a very if
- 1:24:00Speaker 6: you go to advanced Peace dot org you'll see a
- 1:24:02Speaker 6: very effective program mentorship program to reduce violence that will
- 1:24:07Speaker 6: save money drastically from city budgets because of the cost
- 1:24:10Speaker 6: of shootings.
- 1:24:11Speaker 7: A million dollars a shooting.
- 1:24:12Speaker 6: Yeah, right, And then we need to get our police meditating.
- 1:24:18Speaker 6: We need the police need to meditate and beyond forget
- 1:24:20Speaker 6: the bad cops, forget the white supremacists.
- 1:24:23Speaker 7: And that's why we didn't really touch on.
- 1:24:25Speaker 6: But white supremacists have infiltrated law enforcement worldwide.
- 1:24:30Speaker 7: That's the FBI says that, not just me. It's not
- 1:24:32Speaker 7: a conspiracy. That's what the FBI found. So let's not
- 1:24:37Speaker 7: let's put that to the side. Let's talk about cops
- 1:24:40Speaker 7: who actually are you know, they joined because they wanted
- 1:24:42Speaker 7: to do something good. Well, the stress of the job
- 1:24:46Speaker 7: is making them is changing.
- 1:24:48Speaker 6: Their brain, strengthen their prefrontal cortex. It's enlarging their maggo.
- 1:24:51Speaker 6: It's locking in their fight or flight response. It's making
- 1:24:54Speaker 6: them more aggressively, it's making them more violent.
- 1:24:56Speaker 7: I can tell you, man, when you have a job.
- 1:24:59Speaker 6: Where it is dealing with people who have been traumatized,
- 1:25:02Speaker 6: you you take it's a heavyweight. I do a day
- 1:25:05Speaker 6: of meetings with you know, the mother lost or son,
- 1:25:09Speaker 6: the guy who loves the people that are really in
- 1:25:11Speaker 6: the living the life.
- 1:25:13Speaker 7: It's crushing, it's hard, it's heavy, and that's the day
- 1:25:16Speaker 7: of meetings. Let alone. Being a social work in.
- 1:25:18Speaker 6: Your job is to like get off the phone with
- 1:25:20Speaker 6: the girl who's debuted and then get go no funk.
- 1:25:22Speaker 6: Like at some point the brain says that I can't
- 1:25:24Speaker 6: care anymore, I can't take this Twitter.
- 1:25:27Speaker 7: Meditation can believe that. But again, being a police officer.
- 1:25:31Speaker 6: We.
- 1:25:33Speaker 7: Costs go through some ship. Man to go through some ship, and.
- 1:25:35Speaker 6: The brain reacts to that. So it ship's dangerous out here.
- 1:25:38Speaker 6: You have time to be nice to people. Meditation can
- 1:25:41Speaker 6: relieve that it can get their bran back to a function.
- 1:25:44Speaker 7: They become better police officers with that.
- 1:25:46Speaker 6: So this is a This is how we make big,
- 1:25:49Speaker 6: big changes. This is how we at least in our.
- 1:25:51Speaker 7: Community, as we have to deal with systemic racism, as
- 1:25:55Speaker 7: we have to deal with everything the system throws at us.
- 1:26:00Speaker 6: Meditation can give us the ability to deal with the system,
- 1:26:03Speaker 6: to navigate it better right and then hopefully do the
- 1:26:07Speaker 6: work to undo the way the game is rigged against us.
- 1:26:12Speaker 6: But right now, we've been doing it the other way.
- 1:26:16Speaker 6: We've been trying to unrig the system, and we gotta
- 1:26:19Speaker 6: do us first because we don't know.
- 1:26:23Speaker 7: We don't know. You see what's happening with the system.
- 1:26:26Speaker 7: The whole shit is fucking wobbling. This should looks shaky
- 1:26:30Speaker 7: right now. So it's how you do it? How are
- 1:26:33Speaker 7: you going to handle yourself? This is what meditation can
- 1:26:36Speaker 7: help us do.
- 1:26:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm a big believer in meditation as well. And
- 1:26:43Speaker 3: a lot of times people have the misconception about meditation
- 1:26:46Speaker 3: because they think that it's you gotta like sit Indian style.
- 1:26:50Speaker 3: I mean, that's one part of it. But like for me,
- 1:26:51Speaker 3: like every morning before I get up, I just lay
- 1:26:54Speaker 3: in bed still for about twenty minutes sometimes even up
- 1:26:57Speaker 3: to any hour, and I just think and it's like
- 1:26:59Speaker 3: the best far on in the world to actually like
- 1:27:02Speaker 3: visualize think, and it's like, you know, it starts my
- 1:27:05Speaker 3: day off a lot better than if I had to
- 1:27:07Speaker 3: get up and just rush and just throw clothes on
- 1:27:09Speaker 3: and run out the house, which most people that's the
- 1:27:12Speaker 3: that's the that's their daily routine. And it's like you're
- 1:27:15Speaker 3: already starting your day off on a whole different frequency.
- 1:27:18Speaker 3: So I know firsthand the benefits of all of that
- 1:27:24Speaker 3: as far as you know, just you know, thinking about
- 1:27:28Speaker 3: things and putting things in the universe and meditating and
- 1:27:31Speaker 3: visualizing and all of these things are extremely important, and
- 1:27:35Speaker 3: a lot of times you don't really take it serious.
- 1:27:37Speaker 3: We kind of think, like, you know, we have a
- 1:27:40Speaker 3: lot of ignorant beliefs in superstitions. Yeah exactly, yeah exactly.
- 1:27:47Speaker 4: I saw you, you know, and that's that I struggle,
- 1:27:50Speaker 4: like being still and not having a thousand thoughts going.
- 1:27:52Speaker 4: I saw that you use you use music as one
- 1:27:55Speaker 4: of the key factors to help you do that. And
- 1:27:57Speaker 4: I saw like when you did it through speakers, you
- 1:28:00Speaker 4: your brain waves were at like eighteen percent, but when
- 1:28:02Speaker 4: you had headphones and you saw a drastic difference, which
- 1:28:05Speaker 4: is key. Like I was like, you know what, I
- 1:28:07Speaker 4: gotta try that. I have to go Yeah I didn't try, Yeah,
- 1:28:12Speaker 4: I said, I have to try it.
- 1:28:14Speaker 7: You do, we do. When you have the headphones on,
- 1:28:15Speaker 7: you find the right music. It just becomes very encompassing,
- 1:28:20Speaker 7: you know. And then not every meditation. I have diet
- 1:28:22Speaker 7: meditations on that babe, you should check out. And uh,
- 1:28:27Speaker 7: that is the techn The meditation technique.
- 1:28:30Speaker 6: I use is a lot of visualization and as you
