- 0:03Miller Condon coming up on 1:30 on a Friday.
- 0:07How many more of these before we get to a Football Friday?
- 0:09Well do we count pre season? Yes, whatever it takes.
- 0:12Well, what's that first week in August?
- 0:14Uh huh. So we got 2 more left here in
- 0:16May. Yeah, so about 10. 6, maybe
- 0:1811/10/11, We're getting close there.
- 0:21Are it's been better? Don't wish away my summer over
- 0:23there, Miller. OK, but.
- 0:25I am. Let's get to Bill Seals.
- 0:27We shortchanged him timing wise yesterday.
- 0:30Wanted to make that up to him and Bill joins us.
- 0:32Bill Trenton, Kent, cyclonereport.com for Bill
- 0:35Seals, part of the Rivals network.
- 0:38Bill, good to talk to you. I guess I'm going to start with
- 0:40you is and we wouldn't have had this part of the conversation
- 0:43yesterday. As we just found out today,
- 0:45Wendy Winterstein, the president of Iowa State is going to retire
- 0:49in 2026. Trent and I kind of batted
- 0:52around a little bit does what she's meant to the athletic
- 0:55program by all accounts, Bill. And if you're, you know, a fan
- 1:00of sports at your university, you want sports to matter.
- 1:03And they apparently due to Wendy Winterstein.
- 1:06I would think that Jamie Pollard would be would consider her an
- 1:11ally. And that's not always the case,
- 1:14is it? Well, no, I, yeah, I think the,
- 1:18the connection with those two working relationships been
- 1:21wonderful. I mean, I, I think that I, I
- 1:25don't know if there were any inklings that she was going to
- 1:27retire because the, with with Pollard extending his contract
- 1:33and you've got now Osselberger Campbell on for the long term.
- 1:36What through a 2032. I, I wonder maybe if they were
- 1:41were counting on working with Wendy Winters team for most of
- 1:45those years. So I, I question maybe if if
- 1:48anybody knew about this outside of her, her circle.
- 1:51So yeah, he's been great for the athletic department and you
- 1:55know, really even for for some of his warts, I obviously not
- 1:58knowing how to fly a plane real well.
- 2:00Steve Lee. Other than.
- 2:03That athletically though, I think at least was also very
- 2:08good for athletics at Iowa State.
- 2:10So they're on a, they're on a little bit of a roll here in, in
- 2:14hiring presidents that have been a lot more friendly, I think to
- 2:17ISU athletics and maybe some of those in the 70s and 80s were.
- 2:22So we'll we'll just have to see how this search goes.
- 2:25But yeah, I think athletics, they've got to find someone that
- 2:27prioritizes that. Help a foreigner out here you 2
- 2:31What? Who gets to sit on?
- 2:33Is it a committee that hires will hire the next Board of
- 2:36Regents? It's a Board of Regents.
- 2:38So is there is this comprised of any former athletes, student
- 2:43athletes? Are these all business people,
- 2:45bottom line? Mostly all business people that
- 2:48are on that Board of Regents. So yeah, I would imagine they're
- 2:53probably going to spearhead the the search on, on this and and
- 2:56handle most of that. I don't know if they'll set up
- 2:58some kind of committee or or how that really works.
- 3:02So when we look at that and we look at Jamie Pollard recently
- 3:05has been talking about the situation, I don't want to say
- 3:08dire because that's not fair, but there are concerns about the
- 3:12viability of financially where it is.
- 3:14Don't believe us? Listen to him.
- 3:15Absolutely. He's been saying as much.
- 3:18When do you hear those comments? When do you hear what Jamie
- 3:20Pollard is saying? Is it trying to get the fan base
- 3:23round up and get those coffers open up?
- 3:25How do you read into it and does it leave you concerned when you
- 3:28look at the future of Iowa State athletics?
- 3:30Well, I think they're already taking the, the steps necessary
- 3:34to try and get it as much as they, they can out of the fan
- 3:37base. But you know, after a while you
- 3:39just wonder if it, if it gets to be tapped out to an extent that,
- 3:43you know, they rose the, I think the ticket prices that the sales
- 3:47tax wasn't included or was included before.
- 3:50Now it's an added charge. So they, I think they gained
- 3:52what about 7:00, what, 7% on, on season tickets more than what
- 3:58they did the year before that raised the donation levels.
- 4:02And you know, now's the time to do it.
- 4:04Gosh, if you're Jamie Pollard, you've got football that's
- 4:07coming off the season. It had basketball's been
- 4:10tremendous women's basketball on the programs.
- 4:13They're doing very, very well And and the, the APR scores are
- 4:17great. So now's a great time to do
- 4:20that. But I, I, you wonder what some
- 4:22of the of Pollard's comments, maybe if he's angling for a
- 4:26larger piece and he talks a lot about what Arizona State had
- 4:32with the endowment or whatever you want to call it from the,
- 4:36the state of Arizona and, and supplementing the budget for the
- 4:40athletic department there. And you wonder maybe if he's
- 4:43angling for some money from the state in a way to help
- 4:47subsidized the Iowa State athletics program.
- 4:50Because it it, it's after a point, though, it's going to be
- 4:55a lot of money to get think you're going to get out of Iowa
- 4:58State fans on an annual basis. If you got to add, what, 20 to
- 5:02$25 million to the budget, that's probably a lot to ask of
- 5:06Iowa State fans. I think it's maybe a a bigger
- 5:10source of revenue that he's angling for.
- 5:13I did see some fans not not happy that she's retiring, but
- 5:17wonder. I guess put it this way, they're
- 5:20more so wondering if it it opens up more of a pathway to serving
- 5:23beer at at the athletic event. I I still think Pollard's the
- 5:27roadblock there, don't you? Well, yeah, I think Pollard,
- 5:31I'm, I'm not sure Wendy Winterstein was was a fan of of
- 5:35that either. But yeah, I think it, it's a
- 5:38Pollard, a very public opponent of doing beer sales at Jack
- 5:45Trice Stadium. I think that's going to continue
- 5:47to be the case. Over to football recruiting,
- 5:50that's going to be heating up here pretty soon.
- 5:52But I did see on Rivals an article last week from your
- 5:56guys's Auburn site. Evan Jacobson was there a little
- 5:59bit. He's got an official set up.
- 6:01Evan from Waukee just took an official visit to Stanford.
- 6:04That certainly opens your eyes. Dad has doctor in front of his
- 6:07name. That's another part Notre Dame,
- 6:10Florida State, Auburn, Texas A&M, Stanford, those are the
- 6:13official visits that he has set up.
- 6:15He's taking a taking a ton of visits to Iowa State.
- 6:18Does it feel like the shift is moved on from ISU or is there
- 6:22still hope in Cycloneville? Well, I think there's still
- 6:25hope. I, I've been, I, I've known Evan
- 6:28for a long time. My, my son and him used to play
- 6:31baseball against each other years ago.
- 6:33So yeah, we, we go back a few years, great kid.
- 6:37And he's going to make a, he's going to make a great decision.
- 6:41I'm sure that that is best for him.
- 6:43But yeah, I, I have been texting with him a little bit to here in
- 6:46the last couple days. He did tell me he's still
- 6:48playing, planning to take an official to Iowa State.
- 6:51That's going to be one of those. It's going to be a midweek 1
- 6:54though, won't be on the weekends when they're getting a lot of
- 6:57kids in, but your kids can take 10 of those now instead of five
- 7:01that you saw a couple years ago. So he's going to use a lot of
- 7:04those and it's going to be a midweek visit in the first
- 7:08couple weeks of June. So still expect him in another
- 7:11one that I reported on too. Now that we're on the topic of
- 7:14tight ends, that Kevin Sullivan, he was another one that I kind
- 7:18of thought maybe the Iowa State was out on, but good news for
- 7:22Cyclone fans with him. He's going to be coming in on an
- 7:25official as well. He's out of Kansas City,
- 7:28Rockhurst High School. So another Midwest kid.
- 7:31This Midwest is loaded with the tight ends this year.
- 7:36Gosh, it's incredible the number of of kids that play that
- 7:39position out of that. Well, Campbell calls it the six
- 7:42hour radius. Well, you take a six hour radius
- 7:45from Ames and you're looking at probably 10 to 15 teen kids at
- 7:49least right now that are going to go play power for football
- 7:52that are tight end. That's incredible.
- 7:54That is the Adam Gorney who works as part of Rivals.
- 7:59Let's get to the jet. Tamala, which I don't think
- 8:01anyone could view this as positive news.
- 8:05That seemed like Tamala was very high on Iowa State.
- 8:08In fact, he'd committed. But all of a sudden, here comes
- 8:11Alabama. Now, Alabama came in late for
- 8:13Brock Purdy. We know how that turned out, but
- 8:15Tamala Alabama's in early on on this kid.
- 8:19What's the likelihood that Tamala holds his commitment to
- 8:23the clones, with Alabama potentially kicking the tires
- 8:27and and making him a part of the Crimson Tide?
- 8:32Yeah, well, it's, it's certainly is an is a good question, Kenny.
- 8:36I think it's, it's probably going to depend on how the the
- 8:39visit goes down there. Gorni did that report here a
- 8:44short time ago on the Alabama premium message board that
- 8:49Tamala is planning to visit down there at some point.
- 8:52So he would to an extent be opening up his recruitment to to
- 8:56go down there on a visit to ball class.
- 8:59You you always I think the first thing you look at as well.
- 9:02So they have any other quarterbacks committed.
- 9:05They do not in 2026. You go back to these schools
- 9:11too. They they hit the portal so hard
- 9:13at that level anymore. It's they, they plug holes that
- 9:17way. But you do go back to Alabama's
- 9:19class of 2025. They did bring in one
- 9:22quarterback there, Keelan Russell, a kid out of Texas that
- 9:27was a four-star. But you got to imagine the
- 9:29pipeline there is going to be loaded It.
- 9:32It was interesting. There's just a little subtleties
- 9:36that US reporting guy recruiting guys catch on to.
- 9:40Well, a short time after Tamala tweeted out his offer from
- 9:44Alabama yesterday that Alabama had also offered another kid and
- 9:49another 2026 quarterback, well, Iowa State's quarterbacks coach
- 9:53Jake Waters retweeted. That it was.
- 9:56Sure that everybody in Jet Tamala's camp saw that.
- 10:01You know, Jet is not the sole focus of Alabama's 2026
- 10:05quarterback recruiting when they offered a couple kids and in one
- 10:09day and who knows what the next couple weeks will hold.
- 10:11Whereas Iowa State has kind of has made him long a priority for
- 10:16this class and got him in the fold pretty early.
- 10:19Speaking of guys that they're looking at, Jaden Kuhn on the
- 10:22basketball front, commits to Creighton had an Iowa offer, he
- 10:25had an Iowa State offer. Where were the Cyclones sitting?
- 10:29We heard earlier from Tom Cacard.
- 10:31Felt like kind of a less last couple of weeks it was trending
- 10:33towards the Blue Jays. Anything from the Cyclone front?
- 10:36Did they feel like they had a good shot at Coon?
- 10:38Yeah, I he he was not one that they really focused on, to be
- 10:42honest with you. It was a really early offer, but
- 10:45I'm not sure that that was a committable offer.
- 10:48Per Southeast, Iowa State shifted its focus to to to a few
- 10:54different kids in that 2026 class.
- 10:57Now a lot, a lot of these a lot of these kids in that that 2026
- 11:01are out on the the spring and summer circuit and picking up a
- 11:04lot of offers and, and still kind of dragging things out.
- 11:07So that was kind of interesting maybe to an extent that he
- 11:10committed at this point when we're right in the middle of
- 11:14what the EYBL and three SSB and the Nike, Adidas, Under Armour,
- 11:19all that stuff's going on. Iowa State does have a couple of
- 11:23early commits in 2026 at the guard position.
- 11:27They've offered some in in the like the small forward, that
- 11:31position range for Iowa State. Jack Conan would fit that would
- 11:37fit that bill. He's one that they're looking
- 11:39out out of Wisconsin. So they they've seem to
- 11:42prioritize other ones though. But yeah, I think if they would
- 11:45have pushed for him, they probably would have gotten him
- 11:48even even before now. You, you, you factor in the
- 11:51coaching change in Iowa. I think if Iowa State wanted
- 11:54them and pushed really hard, kind of with the trans position
- 11:57there, they probably could have gotten him.
- 12:00Definitely stability. Iowa State has a big step up on
- 12:02that one and we know change is also coming over there in Omaha
- 12:06as Greg McDermott will be hanging it up here pretty soon,
- 12:09though Huss makes his way over to take over in that role when
- 12:12he does eventually retire. One more for you and Bill.
- 12:16This is something on the basketball front.
- 12:19I've heard a lot more on the women's side, but you would do
- 12:21in the recruiting that you do. I've heard that this class of
- 12:252026, there are so many kids that aren't committing.
- 12:28And when we get to kind of commitment time this summer,
- 12:31maybe you're not going to get the same kind of level of
- 12:33commitment that we have because we're still waiting.
- 12:36What is going to be handed down with the NCAA?
- 12:39What's going to happen as it pertains to the financial part
- 12:42of that? You guys are rivals.
- 12:44Are you hearing something similar that maybe the the
- 12:47timeline is going to be changing this summer for a lot of
- 12:49prospects? Yeah, are are are you referring
- 12:52to football, basketball or both? Basketball was the one that I
- 12:55heard mostly, but I do wonder if that'll also trickle down to the
- 12:58football side of things or well, you know what, football,
- 13:00everybody's going to be fully invested, so maybe it won't hit
- 13:03football. Well, I think that that I that T
- 13:06JS made it very clear that the high high school's going to
- 13:09continue to be a priority for them.
- 13:12Iowa State, I think that's as you know, as as an A's fan like
- 13:15I am, maybe that's the moneyball approach for for Iowa State
- 13:19right now to use that term. They're they're going to go
- 13:21there as probably a lot cheaper to to when you you're recruiting
- 13:26high school kids versus trying to go out and and outbid
- 13:30somebody else in the transfer portal market for somebody next
- 13:34next March. So they're going to and that's
- 13:36that's T JS thing too. That's what made him such a
- 13:40great assistant when he was working his way up through the
- 13:42ranks. He was the high school guy and
- 13:44that all the connections and Wisconsin, Iowa State's done
- 13:47great there. They've already got two kids on
- 13:50board in 2026. Heck, they've even got Josiah
- 13:54Harrington in the 2027 class from the Eastern Iowa committed
- 13:59as a as a a sophomore. So, yeah, I mean, he's going to
- 14:02continue to prioritize perhaps. I think maybe the one exception
- 14:06will be the posts. Iowa State's tended to go to the
- 14:10portal for those kids. And then in the Big 12, you need
- 14:13you need grown men that are 2223 years old.
- 14:17And, you know, I don't think maybe they're going to develop
- 14:19as many of those post guys. They'll continue to go to the
- 14:22portal and see what works there. And you know, football too, if
- 14:27we hit on in on that real quick, I think they they've done
- 14:31continue to do a great job in getting they always got to
- 14:35rework for kids, it seems like. Well, Iowa State's got what, 13,
- 14:39I think last time I I checked 13 committed, which is a huge
- 14:45amount really when you compare it to other other schools out
- 14:48there. Kansas, you look real close at
- 14:51them. They're another one of those.
- 14:52It's locked up a lot of kids early.
- 14:54But on the other hand, you're in the combine season right now
- 14:57too. And as you're seeing, a lot of
- 14:59them are, are getting offers a couple other Iowa State commits.
- 15:03It's not just Jet Braden Thomas, one of the safeties, he's going
- 15:07to go visit Michigan State. Daniel Howard out of Chicago,
- 15:11also Michigan State with him. I think he's gotten a couple
- 15:15other ones. So that's kind of the one of the
- 15:17perils of locking up a lot of that class so early is now
- 15:21you've got to re recruit them and you got to do it in the
- 15:23middle of high school spring combine season.
- 15:27Bill Seals cyclonereport.com Keep up to date on all the
- 15:30recruiting news, etcetera cyclonereport.com Part of
- 15:33Rivals. And congratulations to Connor.
- 15:35Your son graduate in high school today.
- 15:37Yeah, we got to meet him last year.
- 15:38Nice young man. And moving on to Grandview,
- 15:41right? Yeah, he's going to go play.
- 15:43He's got some scholarship money to go play tennis there.
- 15:45So pretty exciting. He's going to be close to home
- 15:48with that. Kind of funny how things work.
- 15:50He plays baseball. Well, he'll he'll still be on
- 15:53the team this year. So Trent, you come out, call
- 15:55some games, they'll be he'll be around playing out the the
- 15:59senior season and then turn the focus to sports management on
- 16:03the academic side and then playing some tennis.
- 16:06And take over for dad at cycle and report.
- 16:08There you go. You never know, right?
- 16:11Maybe. Maybe he'll pick something that
- 16:12pays a little better. Thank you, Bill.
- 16:17Again, apologize for yesterday that made it up to you here
- 16:20today. Thank you, buddy.
- 16:21Talk to you next week. Thanks.
- 16:23Yup, see ya Bill Seals cycle report.
- 16:24Good for him son. Graduating little scholarship.
- 16:27Yeah, absolutely is. Big kid, big kid.
- 16:31I bet his forehand is. Wrong.
- 16:33Absolutely. Melory Condon, Transplays of the
- 16:36day. Circus Sports sponsor those.
- 16:37That's next. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 16:40Network. Melory Condon, welcome back.
- 16:42Our final segment for the week. When does your high school
- 16:45baseball coverage start? Next week either yeah, Thursday
- 16:48or Friday, kind of looking at the schedule, trying to map
- 16:51things out. Summer's a little tighter than
- 16:53they have in the past with 10 you softball.
- 16:56We got T-ball with young Jack, so trying to find and those
- 17:00pockets that work scheduling wise for me.
- 17:02But yeah, either Thursday or Friday.
- 17:03Next week is when we'll kick things off as the seasons begin
- 17:07and also well going to do a couple softball games also this
- 17:11summer. Why wouldn't you?
- 17:11Yes of course. Get out there and maybe I'll
- 17:14have a new Stack girl that'll come along with me and young
- 17:16Ella. We'll teach her how to keep book
- 17:18for the old man so we can do 1 less thing.
- 17:20I love it. All right, let's get to your
- 17:22place of the day. Circus Sports sponsor those
- 17:24download the app available here in the state of Iowa.
- 17:26Likewise, if you're in Illinois, they are available in Illinois,
- 17:29Illinois as well. What are you betting?
- 17:31We have 4 picks for tonight. Let's start.
- 17:34I'm grabbing Boston, you know, and as I thought about it a
- 17:37little bit deeper right before we came on, if it's close, the
- 17:40Knicks are going to win. So if you're going to take
- 17:42Boston, why don't I just grab the money line?
- 17:44I now I have 2 1/2 year. I officially, I took it earlier.
- 17:47You can get about plus 1:25-ish on the Celtics.
- 17:52I just. I don't think that 2 1/2's going
- 17:54to matter. I think either Boston's going to
- 17:55win it outright or the Knicks are going to win relatively
- 17:57comfortably. 7810 points, something like that.
- 17:59I'd. Love to see a Game 7 but I want
- 18:02to see the Knicks. I know.
- 18:03It's kind of a basket both sides argument.
- 18:05Although I'm not sure the the Pacers may have something to say
- 18:08We'll. Get ahead of ourselves.
- 18:09I'm right there with you. I think that's going to be a
- 18:11tremendous series 3 baseball plays tonight.
- 18:14Let's open up. Made a lot of money last year on
- 18:18our boy Francis. I'm not making much money on him
- 18:22this year. No, he's been brutal.
- 18:23So we're going to go the other way.
- 18:25Jack Flaherty, another guy that you don't like.
- 18:29Yeah, been a big. Fan now.
- 18:30He has been very good himself. 4.61 ERA, one in five record.
- 18:34I guess I'll go with Flaherty and live the -115 there.
- 18:38Give me the Nationals. They're looking to bounce back
- 18:40against the Orioles, who are looking to bounce back.
- 18:42Two teams going in the wrong direction.
- 18:44I'll just take the better picture.
- 18:45Mackenzie Gore's so much better than Povich, so we'll jump on
- 18:49that one. Nationals plus 110 and then one
- 18:51more tonight. Never bet against the streak
- 18:53unless it's your team. Give me the Brewers tonight. 11
- 18:56game-winning streak for my Minnesota Twins.
- 18:59The collision. Maybe it's just the bad vibes
- 19:01that I normally have. Joe Ryan.
- 19:03Joe Ryan against Patrick, it's advantage.
- 19:06Minnesota bullpen double header 2 days ago, then had the weird
- 19:10game yesterday. We'll take the Brewers.
- 19:14The Cubs trail the White Sox 2 zip in the second inning.
- 19:17The Cubbies do have runners at second and third.
- 19:20One out. Kate Horton gave up A2 run home
- 19:23run in the first inning. So we'll see if the well just
- 19:28got another out. So we'll see where it goes.
- 19:30Anyways, we know we're going to go on out of here and turn
- 19:34things over to the drive that's coming up with Heather and
- 19:37Lucas. They take you until 5:00
- 19:39overtime Iowa at that point. Appreciate you being with us
- 19:42here. Trent and I talk sports with
- 19:44you. Miller Condon, welcome back.
- 19:46Hour number two of our program. We're here until 2.
- 19:49Coming up back to the drive, Heather and Lucas take you until
- 19:525. Overtime Iowa.
- 19:53At that point, bottom of the hour.
- 19:56Bill Seals will join us. cyclonereport.com.
- 19:58Trent will make his plays of the week or weekend.
- 20:01Circa sports sponsor those. Speaking of Circa, the VP of
- 20:04operations, Mike Palm joins us. Mike, Trent and Ken, thanks for
- 20:08coming on. How are you?
- 20:10Oh, not too bad here watching the the the Black Eyed Jewson
- 20:17undercard here on the book. We got it all on and and about
- 20:21to get ready for White Sox and Cubs.
- 20:23Yeah, it's a big day, no doubt, in the winds blowing out it.
- 20:26Wrigley feels that, and the total is correspondingly huge.
- 20:29I mean, it's what, 11 1/2? I think right now.
- 20:32A lot of runs going to be scored on the North side, Mike.
- 20:36Yeah, it should be a fun day at the ballpark for everyone.
- 20:38Involved, no doubt about it, a lot of ground to cover with you.
- 20:41I want to start with the NFL schedule coming out and what
- 20:44says seemingly another level or another layer rather of when the
- 20:48schedule comes out. Everybody does their own thing.
- 20:51Now, one of my things, and I think I speak for a lot of
- 20:54people, is going to Thanksgiving and going to Christmas when it
- 20:58comes to Circus Survivor. That's what this contest is
- 21:01meant in the space that it's carved up in the sports
- 21:04landscape. What are you guys going to do
- 21:08when it comes to Christmas with all the teams repeating both
- 21:11Thanksgiving and Christmas Day? There's no games between.
- 21:16You will get a game on Saturday and then of course on Sunday.
- 21:18Have you figured out what you're going to do with Week 17 yet?
- 21:22We're taking a meeting at 4:30 this afternoon, Pacific Time,
- 21:26Jeff Benson, myself and Derek, and talking through that very
- 21:32question. I'd be surprised if we do
- 21:35something different. I just, it just makes it harder
- 21:38having the same team repeat on those two holidays.
- 21:41But I'm not sure that we do anything out of what we have
- 21:43done before. Christmas Day is its own region
- 21:47and and Thanksgiving, the Black Friday, is its own week.
- 21:51So there is a Saturday game, the 27th, but I have not seen
- 21:56confirmation if it's just one single game.
- 21:58It's Peacock's getting an exclusive game.
- 22:00It'll be on Saturday the 27th of December that is out there.
- 22:03Have you guys heard are they planning multiple games as
- 22:06they've done plenty of times in the past on that Saturday or is
- 22:09it just going to be 1 game? We assume that there's going to
- 22:13be two games. OK, we.
- 22:15Just. Have 3, but we don't know who,
- 22:18who, who are they flexing and and how soon are they going to
- 22:20let him know? Obviously that's very important
- 22:23that that needs to be known before, you know, it would help
- 22:30obviously for everyone when they're in context of goods like
- 22:32that. As you think back to these
- 22:34contests over the last couple of years, a week out from making
- 22:37it, everybody know what the guarantees are going to be, Are
- 22:40there any rule changes etcetera. Do you sense more buzz for this
- 22:44year, Mike, or is that kind of the same?
- 22:48I think it's about the same. I think the big leap that we
- 22:54made from 9 to 14 sort of gives people a better idea of what the
- 22:59range is. I don't think people do too far
- 23:03off on their guesses, although I've had drivers with people
- 23:06come up with the wrong answers. So I think people just look
- 23:11forward to the announcements and hope maybe there's something new
- 23:14or some new wrinkle, and in less than a week's time, everybody
- 23:17will. Mike, we earlier this week went
- 23:20down the rabbit hole. We were talking about the NFL
- 23:23schedule release and then wind it up on coach of the year, who
- 23:26the coach of the year is going to be kind of A2 parter here for
- 23:29you. Those kind of award markets very
- 23:32difficult for coach of the year because it's not the best coach.
- 23:35It's usually a coach that kind of comes out of nowhere and gets
- 23:37his team into the playoffs. And and secondly, do you find
- 23:40value in that? Does that have to be NFL just in
- 23:42general when we're talking about not MVPS but kind of that next
- 23:45tier of awards for different sports?
- 23:49They're tough to book, Trent. I mean, you, you put this coach
- 23:53of the year market up right now and there's not much varying
- 23:56about who you're going to put up there.
- 23:59Now, if you think somebody's team is really bad, you can make
- 24:01their odds a little longer, but to the point of a team taking a
- 24:06step forward and then based off expectations and is somebody
- 24:10going to, you know, win 13 games but they can't win it because
- 24:13they're expected to. And they do that every year.
- 24:15I mean, there really can't be that much variance at the start
- 24:19of the year on that kind of a market, which makes it would
- 24:23make, you know, if you're good at it, there's more value.
- 24:26But as a bookmaker, it's really tough.
- 24:29Mike Pom, VP of Operation Circus Sports joins us.
- 24:32Mike, I want to switch to golf for a second.
- 24:34Obviously it's kind of an apples to oranges question because the
- 24:37Masters is up so far in advance of the Masters, but I got to
- 24:40think that the pre tournament handle right on the Masters is
- 24:47that are multiple times X times more than it would be on the
- 24:51PGA. Just I don't know if it's a lack
- 24:53of buzz around this one. I mean, I love it.
- 24:55I love the blades on the calendar as opposed to August,
- 24:58but how big of a difference is it?
- 24:59Round one pre Round 1 masters to PGA?
- 25:04Well, it's no comparison. It's like just like saying what
- 25:09a Monday Night Football game would be compared to a Tuesday
- 25:12night Max game. It's just it's not close.
- 25:16And I was interested to see overall with what and when we
- 25:20wrap things up Sunday, what our handle was on on the PGA.
- 25:23And did it grow from last year because of how great the Masters
- 25:27was? I'm not sure it's going to, and
- 25:30the fact that maybe some of the the bigger names are up, not up
- 25:34near the leaderboard is really not helping the end game action.
- 25:38These bad names, I mean, how impactful is it for PGA if we
- 25:43had Rory up there and the rest of the leaderboard's the same,
- 25:46but just say, what are those monster names?
- 25:48How big of a difference would that make here for the PGA over
- 25:51the weekend? It would make a big difference.
- 25:54You might see two or three times the right, I mean, Bryce and
- 25:57three under Bryce and three under.
- 25:59So that's the saving grace there.
- 26:01But you know, Rory Scotty, if they're not really in the hunt,
- 26:07if they're 10-12 shots back, that really that really kills
- 26:11the action on especially tomorrow on Saturday.
- 26:15The the turn of the first round tournament leader got by the
- 26:18name of Ryan Gerard. I know you guys offer leader
- 26:21after the first after the first round did was there What was do
- 26:24you remember what his number was?
- 26:26I'd never heard of the dude. For starters, do you remember
- 26:29what he was? I think it was the 3:50 to 1:00
- 26:34or some 325 and we had five wagers, none of them bigger than
- 26:40$20.00 I think. But you so you did have some
- 26:43action on them though. Yeah, we had five different
- 26:45people better, but there's a couple fives and 10 and I think
- 26:49there was 120. Just a completely different
- 26:52world. So it's rivalry weekend in Major
- 26:54League Baseball coming up this weekend.
- 26:56We mentioned the Cubs and the White Sox to kick things off.
- 26:58Does that make any kind of impact at all in terms of
- 27:01handle? Is that something maybe in
- 27:02different states you see a different kind of bump, Anything
- 27:05that comes out of baseball and just a whole hum weekend.
- 27:08But we have rivalries all over the place.
- 27:11In general, interleague clay is not great for handle.
- 27:15So it might make a difference in Illinois and maybe a little bit
- 27:18in Iowa because of the Cubs. But it's, it's no, not really in
- 27:22particular that people care about, you know, the Brewers are
- 27:27playing a bunch of Twins and stuff like that.
- 27:29It's it's better when you have Division Rivals playing in terms
- 27:34of the handle. I want to switch to hockey with
- 27:37you. We have two potential series
- 27:41that could wrap up. Of the two, Toronto, Florida,
- 27:44Winnipeg at Dallas, which of the two, the one in the east or the
- 27:49one in the West, is more likely to see a Game 7 or none of the
- 27:52above? Well, you can't have a more
- 27:56likely. And then that if you're saying
- 28:00more like there you go to pick one of them, I'm going to say
- 28:03I'm going to say your Jets are more likely to get back home
- 28:06than Toronto. Reason being.
- 28:11A lot on the line tomorrow afternoon in Dallas, Not only to
- 28:15keep the not only to keep the dead season alive and a birth in
- 28:18the Western Grafos Finals. I think this game may well
- 28:22determine it will be the starting goalie for Team Canada
- 28:24and the 11. Yeah, yeah, could be and and it
- 28:28might. My take on this, Mike, and I
- 28:30know I'm from there and that's my squad.
- 28:32I don't think the Dallas Stars have a shot if this goes to Game
- 28:357 going back to Winnipeg. I really don't.
- 28:39Well, people said to me they mailed in the performance last
- 28:42night. I said they didn't just don't
- 28:44get any scoring chances against that team in Winnipeg.
- 28:48They, they, they just shut you down and you have to kind of
- 28:51find lucky bounces. I, I, you know, they've been
- 28:53suffocating. 2 shout outs in a row.
- 28:56Dallas needs to win. But hella, Buck has just been so
- 28:58bad, bad on the road. But the price is only $1.45,
- 29:03which will tell me obviously. And tonight you're almost at
- 29:062:50 with the Panthers, so it'll be interesting.
- 29:10If the game is tied later, Winnipeg could take a lead to
- 29:12the third period. I think the pressure all then
- 29:16becomes on the Stars. Do you get the sense that
- 29:19Edmonton's playing the best to hockey right now?
- 29:21Of course they're waiting for the winner of that series.
- 29:23Does Edmonton look like they deserve it?
- 29:25Favorite right now to you? Game five of the LA series this
- 29:31point, they've been the best team, but was it just the
- 29:35Knights really lack of scoring depth or is it that they've
- 29:39really played well in front of Stuart Skinner?
- 29:43I don't know. I like Edmonton to beat either
- 29:47Winnipeg or Dallas and make the final.
- 29:49I think we see a rematch, although in the East I think
- 29:51that goes six or seven games. If it's Florida and Carolina, I
- 29:54could. See it?
- 29:56Over 2 little basketball. We got a Game 7 coming up.
- 29:58We'll get to that momentarily. But before that, game six, MSG
- 30:03chance to Polish off off the Celtics tonight.
- 30:05What do you think we're going to see tonight?
- 30:07A Celtics team that comes out, nothing to lose.
- 30:11We going to see the Knicks maybe playing a little bit nervous out
- 30:15there. What do you think we're going to
- 30:17see and what should be a fun environment tonight at MSG?
- 30:20I like the Celtics tonight. I think the Celtics look better
- 30:23in Game 5 without Tatum. It sounds ridiculous, doesn't
- 30:26it? I thought they look better
- 30:29without Tatum. I'm not saying the Knicks are
- 30:31going to, you know, are going to lay an egg in Celtics.
- 30:34I just think this will be a good game tonight.
- 30:36I'd be shocked if the Knicks ran away with this and the game was
- 30:39the result was decided before the last five minutes of the
- 30:42game. I think the Celtics are very
- 30:43live still. What about the what?
- 30:45What about the West? OKC?
- 30:47Obviously young team. They're 7/7 and 1/2 point
- 30:50favorite. That veteran laden Nuggets team.
- 30:53Would you grab the points at First blush, Mike in this game
- 30:56on Sunday? I already took 7 1/2.
- 30:59Did you think it'd be a good game?
- 31:01I think and I and I have a little bit I, I, I, I put a
- 31:03little piece of money on plus 260 as well, but then I just go
- 31:07in the game. I put some pizza money on Stuart
- 31:09Skinner to win the the the cons money.
- 31:12We'll see if that goes. Hey, WNBA starts this week
- 31:15tomorrow afternoon on noon. Your time Indiana and Chicago.
- 31:19The Angel Caitlin rivalry. What do you do you?
- 31:23Expect a bigger right this season as opposed to last.
- 31:27We know last year took off like a rocket ship.
- 31:29Does it have another level to it, do you think, Mike?
- 31:32We'll see. You know, I wish the Cameron
- 31:34break was healthy because I think I mean, LA have a relevant
- 31:37team would help the right out here because we have so many
- 31:39Southern California people. Obviously Plum went there.
- 31:45They have a good fan base. They have exciting games.
- 31:47They turn out. They're very, very, they've
- 31:51developed their own clientele there.
- 31:53I think it will help if Rick comes back and and they're a
- 31:57playoff team that will help the overall right in the league.
- 32:01There's so much turnover. I mean, you get 8 new coaches.
- 32:04It's really hard. I think the handicap early that
- 32:07you have to watch these teams play a lot of new faces.
- 32:11It seems like there's more mobility than than in the NBA
- 32:14with with players moving around. So I can't bet the games.
- 32:18I took a little bit of money on the links and and Collier for
- 32:21MVP just to to have something in pocket, but that's about it for
- 32:25me. I think Dallas is interesting to
- 32:26watch with Becker's getting Deja Carrington, I think they'll be
- 32:30much, much better than they were last.
- 32:31Year. What about futures?
- 32:32Did you guys see much of A interest in guys betting on
- 32:36futures? The only ones who are doing it
- 32:39are the ones that are that try to follow it really closely.
- 32:43There's a few, you know, $20 bets here and there for your
- 32:45favorite team, but this is a sport that you get very there's
- 32:49very little recreational playing lessons on your favorite team.
- 32:52The Preakness tomorrow, do you have an opinion?
- 32:54No, I don't, Kenny. I haven't even looked at the
- 32:56form yet. I'm glad journalism is running
- 32:59because there's at least some interest.
- 33:01If he wasn't running out of, you know, I don't know if we, I
- 33:04mean, we still have a lot of booths available.
- 33:06Let's put it back. Do you really?
- 33:07Well, not surprised. Good stuff, Mike Palm.
- 33:10Good stuff, Mike. Thank you.
- 33:11As always, We'll talk to you in a week's time.
- 33:13Appreciate it, Mike. All.
- 33:14Right. Thanks.
- 33:15Good. To talk to you, Mike Palm, VP of
- 33:17Operations. If you're listening in the
- 33:19eastern well across the river, you can download the Circa
- 33:22Sports Illinois. Circa is in Illinois, of course,
- 33:25they're here in Iowa as well. Circa Sports Iowa download you
- 33:28can find the best price really. I mean always on golf Yeah, I'd
- 33:32be surprised if you wouldn't there.
- 33:33So I following our conversation yesterday about you Stewart
- 33:37Skinner and you're asking questions Yeah.
- 33:39I got him at 325 to one. Do I think he's going to win the
- 33:43con? Smite if Edmonton wins right and
- 33:47McDavid is McDavid. But if But if Stewart stands on
- 33:51his head. Because it would have to be
- 33:55almost in a way, OK Edmonton wins.
- 33:58Get a couple of shut outs in there and dry sidle.
- 34:02Is. And McDavid kind of almost
- 34:04cancel each other out. Well, they're because they're
- 34:06both good. Right.
- 34:06They do what they're normally going to do, but Skinner comes
- 34:09out of nowhere and leads this team.
- 34:11I mean, Mcdavid's 4 to one or three to one or something like
- 34:14that. Stewart Skinner was 325 to one
- 34:17at DraftKings. So we get a couple shutouts,
- 34:21maybe a 2 to one win in there. They don't have any losses that
- 34:25are blowouts, they just he lost 3/2.
- 34:27Yep, Picard does not see the net again.
- 34:30They ride with Skinner the whole time.
- 34:31McDavid has Seiko six games, McDavid has three goals, Dry
- 34:35Settle has three. They each have 3 assists, but
- 34:37they're basically the same, right?
- 34:39Yeah. None of them are game winners.
- 34:40No. Also put that in there right at
- 34:423:25 to 1:00. I wonder what he is right now at
- 34:46DraftKings. So I look Circa dropped him
- 34:48'cause apparently he was 300 to one at Circa and when I went on
- 34:51he was 150 to 1. So I went to my DraftKings and I
- 34:54got 3 and 12:45. I mean I love taking these type
- 34:59of shots, right? And I think as as Mike said, and
- 35:01I agree with Mike, the team to beat in the West is the Edmonton
- 35:05Oilers. Are the Edmonton Oilers rematch
- 35:09of last year was a hell of a series win seven games.
- 35:12Florida, Edmonton. But there's, I mean, why not?
- 35:16Why not? Can you find them on there?
- 35:18I don't see it there. I was looking in another spot.
- 35:21Let me bounce around because I was.
- 35:23Con Smite. Con Smite because I was on the
- 35:26WNBA markets that I was looking at earlier.
- 35:29Team goals on net, Goalie props. Awards.
- 35:33It's under awards. There it is who win the con,
- 35:37Smythe. What's McDavid right now?
- 35:39McDavid is plus 350. This is at DraftKings plus 350.
- 35:44Frederick Anderson, 5 to 1. Is he really?
- 35:46Well, Carolina. Goalie along with Miko Miko
- 35:49Ratnin tricidal 10 to 1 so we're looking down here in this deep,
- 35:52deep range he. Was three and a quarter
- 35:54yesterday afternoon after work, so I bet it at home so about.
- 35:574:00 Well, it's not that anymore.
- 36:00Shy flee 100 to 1. I've got one of him too.
- 36:04Marshawn, he's 75 to. I can't find him.
- 36:08Hella Buck 60 to one, Yeah. Keep going.
- 36:10He's ready. He's in.
- 36:11There he is 80 to. One, He's now 80 to 1.
- 36:13You got the right number. Let smart monies come in, folks.
- 36:18They're moving markets over there, Miller.
- 36:20Yeah, my $5 move the market coffee money.
- 36:25Take a flyer. What 1500 fish if it scores, why
- 36:27not have a little extra on it? All right, time by speaking
- 36:30extra money. Let's see if we can put $1000 of
- 36:32extra money into somebody's pocket.
