Latest / Twin Cities Territory / Twins on a three-game winning streak as Mick Abel nears return
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: We are back. The four point three percenters are back.
- 0:03Speaker 1: The Twins had started off this series in Texas with
- 0:07Speaker 1: two straight wins, a four to two win on Monday
- 0:10Speaker 1: a dominant twelve too win on Tuesday. They are now
- 0:14Speaker 1: thirty five and forty after those two wins against the
- 0:17Speaker 1: Rangers and on the way back up the standings. They've
- 0:21Speaker 1: now won three straight games for the first time since
- 0:24Speaker 1: May twentieth to twenty fourth, when they finished off a
- 0:28Speaker 1: series against Houston then swept the Red Sox in Fenway.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Zach Pierce here from the Athletic along with Dan Hayes
- 0:33Speaker 1: wo Wrong Way. Dan Hayes is over there the Athletics.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Minnesota Twins. Beat Writer and Tyler Duffy in the middle
- 0:39Speaker 1: are longtime Major League former Minnesota Twin guys. The Twins.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Just a week ago, we were very somber tones. They'd
- 0:46Speaker 1: fallen to eight games under five hundred, a season worst,
- 0:49Speaker 1: hit that mark a couple of times in the past week,
- 0:52Speaker 1: and this is about as good a way to respond
- 0:54Speaker 1: as possible, with three straight wins and everything really looking
- 0:57Speaker 1: pretty good in Texas this week.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Dan Yeah, first of the bullpen game and working out
- 1:03Speaker 2: and early offense from Josh Bell and then Byron Buckston
- 1:06Speaker 2: with a big hit in the middle, and then last
- 1:08Speaker 2: night just an explosion to you know, offense, just coming
- 1:13Speaker 2: through and clutch early and then just a lot of
- 1:16Speaker 2: it in the middle and taking down a good pitcher.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Both nights, just getting wins on a team that's also
- 1:24Speaker 2: sort of in that same area, Like the Rangers were
- 1:27Speaker 2: only one under five hundred coming in, but they're middling,
- 1:30Speaker 2: they're kind of frustrated with where they are, and the
- 1:33Speaker 2: Twins are taking advantage. And it's what the Royals did
- 1:35Speaker 2: to the Twins a week earlier, that ugly home series
- 1:38Speaker 2: where the Royals won three or four and the Twins
- 1:41Speaker 2: had some winnable games in there. It's definitely what the
- 1:45Speaker 2: Twins need right now. This is what we've talked about,
- 1:48Speaker 2: where they got to strike and keep themselves relevant because
- 1:52Speaker 2: already we're seeing the trade lists come out. I know
- 1:55Speaker 2: that Buster only from ESPN had a list on the
- 1:58Speaker 2: top trade candidates.
- 1:59Speaker 3: Today.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Byron Buckston is number two on the list and Joe
- 2:04Speaker 2: Ryan's number four, and yesterday Buster.
- 2:07Speaker 1: In the list about the most down there.
- 2:11Speaker 2: He is, you know, and yesterday Buster had the executive's
- 2:16Speaker 2: most under.
- 2:17Speaker 3: Fire the twelve executives most under fire.
- 2:19Speaker 2: And Tom pollad not Jeremy zol was listed, which you know,
- 2:23Speaker 2: I think I've made that point and argued a few
- 2:26Speaker 2: times that Tom poll adds really the one on the.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Seat here versus versus oul.
- 2:31Speaker 2: But you're you're getting to that point where people are
- 2:33Speaker 2: going to start bringing this up. It's June seventeenth, and
- 2:36Speaker 2: so you want to be trending in the right direction.
- 2:38Speaker 2: The twins are especially offensively and you know, getting healthy
- 2:43Speaker 2: on the pitching side of things, which will really help
- 2:46Speaker 2: because we we've we've talked about the offense being good
- 2:48Speaker 2: and how many runs they have given up being their deterrence,
- 2:52Speaker 2: so very encouraging a couple of days, and now they
- 2:55Speaker 2: go into this day off, this rare mid series day off,
- 2:59Speaker 2: where they have a chance to go fresh, reset the bullpen,
- 3:02Speaker 2: and get kind of fired up for the rest of
- 3:05Speaker 2: the road trip.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Go to the World Cup with you. Yeah, Dan, are
- 3:08Speaker 1: you going? Did you buy a fourteen hundred dollars ticket
- 3:10Speaker 1: to England Croatia?
- 3:11Speaker 3: You know what?
- 3:12Speaker 2: The YouTube or the GoFundMe came up short and came
- 3:16Speaker 2: up about thirteen hundred and ninety eight dollars short of
- 3:19Speaker 2: the fourteen hundred dollars.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Ask I got two dollars. My dad sent two dollars.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Oh that's nice, it was, it was, But no, no,
- 3:29Speaker 2: I'm gonna work and do some other stuff and then
- 3:32Speaker 2: go out to dinner with friends.
- 3:33Speaker 1: So well, that's good. Yes, the Twins are off today
- 3:37Speaker 1: Wednesday to seventeenth. If you have not seen the reason
- 3:40Speaker 1: why they have a mid series day off because they
- 3:42Speaker 1: finish tomorrow in Texas, it's because of the World Cup
- 3:46Speaker 1: game across the street from the Rangers Stadium, England and Croatia.
- 3:51Speaker 3: Yes, right, yeah, good match man, it's a good it's
- 3:54Speaker 3: a fun match.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Look at you. What's your analysis of the starting eleven?
- 3:59Speaker 1: Who do you what do you think who should be
- 4:00Speaker 1: in there?
- 4:02Speaker 3: You're a funny guy.
- 4:03Speaker 1: All right, we'll move on. I said last I said
- 4:06Speaker 1: last show, we were not going to have any more
- 4:07Speaker 1: World Cup talk, and here we are. But yes, it
- 4:11Speaker 1: was pretty much a perfect two games, I would say
- 4:14Speaker 1: for the Twins. They had a bullpen game on Monday
- 4:19Speaker 1: in which the bullpen did not allow a run. Mike
- 4:21Speaker 1: Parraides allowed to but he was the starter technically. Overall
- 4:25Speaker 1: for the two games, the bullpen was went six and
- 4:27Speaker 1: the third one hit, no runs, nine strikeouts, probably the
- 4:30Speaker 1: best stretch of two games the bullpen has had. It's
- 4:34Speaker 1: also their third straight game allowing four or fewer runs.
- 4:37Speaker 1: They've obviously won all three of them. They'd only done
- 4:39Speaker 1: that four times in the seventeen games before that, just
- 4:42Speaker 1: been getting hit around. Obviously, they remain in last place
- 4:48Speaker 1: in the American League with in terms of runs against,
- 4:51Speaker 1: but the bats obviously showed up Tyler. Pretty much everything
- 4:55Speaker 1: went their way and it seems like a really good
- 4:57Speaker 1: time just given the struggles of recent weeks.
- 5:00Speaker 4: Yeah, it's it's huge to come, you know, after a
- 5:03Speaker 4: rough little stretch there, to come to a team who's
- 5:06Speaker 4: also kind of in the mix but maybe not, and
- 5:09Speaker 4: you know they're going through their own struggles and to
- 5:12Speaker 4: just handle your business like that's, you know, the name
- 5:14Speaker 4: of the game most of the time, you know, in
- 5:17Speaker 4: these close games, it's just taking care of your job
- 5:19Speaker 4: at that moment. And you know, we were talking about
- 5:22Speaker 4: it before he came on, Like even Josh Bell just
- 5:24Speaker 4: taking the single in the first inning yesterday is like
- 5:27Speaker 4: it's a big swing and it's one of those moments
- 5:29Speaker 4: where maybe a younger guy is trying to swing for
- 5:32Speaker 4: the fences or trying to do too much in a moment.
- 5:35Speaker 4: And he took his bat and said, I have Byron
- 5:38Speaker 4: buckson over there. I just got to touch this baseball
- 5:40Speaker 4: and driving a run and you know, put a put
- 5:43Speaker 4: a starter, you know, put some more pressure on a
- 5:45Speaker 4: starter in the first inning. Like it's that's just small
- 5:48Speaker 4: part of it. I mean, hitting Homer's early. You know,
- 5:51Speaker 4: obviously there was no shortage of hard contact yesterday. But
- 5:55Speaker 4: to come on the road and you know, settle in
- 5:58Speaker 4: quickly and beat win a close game and then just
- 6:01Speaker 4: beat the brakes off of a team, you know, game two,
- 6:03Speaker 4: like that's all you can ask for. And you know,
- 6:06Speaker 4: it's it seems to be there's little shuffles in the lineup,
- 6:09Speaker 4: things like that. I think larnk led off yesterday, if
- 6:11Speaker 4: I'm not mistaken. And so it's just like little changes
- 6:15Speaker 4: in tweaks. Shelty's trying to work with his pieces that
- 6:18Speaker 4: he's got. You know, we've got pitching, like Zebby looked
- 6:22Speaker 4: great yesterday. You know, he's he's a pitcher.
- 6:24Speaker 1: At the end of the day.
- 6:25Speaker 4: He's not going to punch out fifteen, you know, or
- 6:28Speaker 4: I mean he might next time out. You never know,
- 6:30Speaker 4: but he's he's a pitchable guy, and so sometimes you're
- 6:33Speaker 4: gonna give up hits, you know, guys like that, when
- 6:35Speaker 4: you're not blowing people away all the time, it's like
- 6:37Speaker 4: it's gonna happen. And in today's game, nobody cares how
- 6:39Speaker 4: hard you throw anymore or anything like that. So it's
- 6:42Speaker 4: it's so tough week to week to know why anything's happening.
- 6:45Speaker 4: But you know, at the end of the day, winning
- 6:47Speaker 4: a game putting up twelve runs like, you can't ask
- 6:49Speaker 4: for much else. And from the bullpen standpoint, you know,
- 6:53Speaker 4: keeping it close or giving up nothing like that's all
- 6:56Speaker 4: you can ask for. And you know, giving up four
- 6:58Speaker 4: or less that's kind of a good rest for a win,
- 7:00Speaker 4: no matter who you're playing. And so you can roll
- 7:03Speaker 4: out of bed and know your your guys are going
- 7:04Speaker 4: to keep them before like that's that's a good way
- 7:06Speaker 4: to win.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I was gonna say, I'm well aware that most
- 7:09Speaker 1: teams are better when they allow for a fewer runs, but.
- 7:12Speaker 4: Right, but that's a good bench number there.
- 7:14Speaker 1: The thing for the Twins is because they have allowed
- 7:17Speaker 1: so many overall, they're they're they're doing that more often
- 7:21Speaker 1: than other teams allowing five or more runs, so it's
- 7:24Speaker 1: especially important to them to hold that To hold that
- 7:27Speaker 1: number are significant for them, I should say, to hold
- 7:29Speaker 1: that number down. And yes, Trevor Larnick with a very
- 7:32Speaker 1: hilarious leadoff sequence yesterday where he challenged the first pitch
- 7:35Speaker 1: of the game was correct and then just decided to
- 7:38Speaker 1: hit a home run on.
- 7:39Speaker 4: The next Yeah, so just to prove it right.
- 7:45Speaker 1: But everything clicked for the offense on Tuesday. Obviously, Dan
- 7:51Speaker 1: uh and the Twins are now up to number two
- 7:54Speaker 1: in the American League and runs scored. I think it's
- 7:57Speaker 1: seventh overall because the National League has a bunch.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Of Yeah, seventh in baseball, which is yeah, you're right,
- 8:02Speaker 2: the National League is kind of pacing everybody, but.
- 8:07Speaker 3: It's very opportunistic group.
- 8:09Speaker 2: And we'll get into the runners in scoring position a
- 8:11Speaker 2: little bit later, but I mean they are just on
- 8:14Speaker 2: fire right now. And you know, look, this is probably
- 8:19Speaker 2: a little bit of every like you've got Royce Lewis
- 8:23Speaker 2: going again, and Byron Buckston has been just doing this.
- 8:27Speaker 2: I don't know, inhuman it doesn't it doesn't see it
- 8:31Speaker 2: seems like Superman, you know what he is doing. He
- 8:34Speaker 2: didn't homer last night, but he got on base a
- 8:37Speaker 2: couple of times and just reake Tavoc and going into
- 8:40Speaker 2: last night he had homered twenty three times in forty
- 8:42Speaker 2: eight games. He did not homer once in the first
- 8:45Speaker 2: fourteen games, and then because of the World Baseball Classic,
- 8:48Speaker 2: losing his rhythm, cold weather whatever, but almost homering every
- 8:52Speaker 2: other game, and Byron needed just another player kind of.
- 8:56Speaker 3: Get to that level of energy, and Royce is there
- 9:01Speaker 3: and then all the rest of the guys are falling
- 9:03Speaker 3: into place.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Cody Clements having an outstanding June, have featured him today
- 9:07Speaker 2: in the Athletic. You know he's his ops is somewhere
- 9:10Speaker 2: around nine hundred in June, but five homers, hit a
- 9:14Speaker 2: monster three run homer last night. Josh Bell had a
- 9:17Speaker 2: couple of big RBIs like we like Duff mentioned there
- 9:19Speaker 2: the RBI in.
- 9:20Speaker 3: The first.
- 9:22Speaker 2: It's a collective group effort, like it's really nobody really
- 9:25Speaker 2: is blowing people away bucks And like Buckston's got twenty
- 9:29Speaker 2: three homers, he also has like thirty five or thirty
- 9:32Speaker 2: eight RBIs is it's not a very.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Yes, nobody is.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Nobody's statistically just like posting jaw dropping numbers aside from
- 9:43Speaker 2: Buckston's home runs and his slug but collectively it works.
- 9:49Speaker 2: And when you get that Royce lewis middle of the
- 9:51Speaker 2: order guy who's been consistently coming through the way he
- 9:54Speaker 2: has and it's only a week.
- 9:55Speaker 3: I know, it's only a.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Week that he's really been going, but it just has
- 9:59Speaker 2: a feel about it, like and Royce is a vibes guy.
- 10:02Speaker 3: When Royce says those vibes going, it's different. It's when
- 10:05Speaker 3: he can carry a team when he is not being
- 10:08Speaker 3: asked to do is carry the team by himself.
- 10:10Speaker 2: This time, there's just there's a bunch of other guys
- 10:12Speaker 2: contributing and putting up good RBI numbers, and you know,
- 10:15Speaker 2: I think that that's really been the.
- 10:18Speaker 3: Key to this they you know, I like how they've
- 10:23Speaker 3: done it. The runners in scoring position.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Before we get to runners in scoring position, Dan, we
- 10:28Speaker 1: just have to take a quick break to talk about
- 10:30Speaker 1: Sea Geek. As you all know, I have been trying
- 10:36Speaker 1: to find my way to a Minnesota Twins game this year.
- 10:39Speaker 1: I still have not been to one, which is pretty terrible,
- 10:43Speaker 1: but especially after being offered tickets by TC Bear himself
- 10:46Speaker 1: at the Twin Cities or Minneapolis Saint Paul airport anyway.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Sea Geek is your home for MLB tickets. It's got
- 10:56Speaker 1: with over thirty five million downloads. It is the number
- 10:58Speaker 1: one rated ticketing app in the world. They're over seventy
- 11:02Speaker 1: thousand events listed on seat geeked in. You could even
- 11:05Speaker 1: still get to that World Cup game if you wanted to.
- 11:07Speaker 1: There's just anything you want. But we're gonna talk today
- 11:09Speaker 1: about MLB because that's what our code is good for.
- 11:13Speaker 1: MLB's in full swing. You can get tickets to any
- 11:15Speaker 1: game you want. And with sea geek being MLB's official
- 11:18Speaker 1: ticket marketplace, your tickets are fully guaranteed and instantly fulfilled
- 11:22Speaker 1: in your account after purchase. I love using seat Geek.
- 11:25Speaker 1: I'm gonna do it to find those Twins tickets. As
- 11:27Speaker 1: you can see there, they have that great system where
- 11:29Speaker 1: you can find out if you're getting a good deal
- 11:31Speaker 1: on your seats or not. Green dots mean it's good,
- 11:33Speaker 1: red dots mean it's bad. It's already on a scale
- 11:36Speaker 1: of one to ten, very visual, very satisfying. Plus every
- 11:40Speaker 1: ticket is backed by their buyer guarantee. And of course
- 11:44Speaker 1: I have a code for you guys, and that code
- 11:47Speaker 1: is right there on the screen. It is Territory ten.
- 11:50Speaker 1: You can use code Territory ten for ten percent off
- 11:52Speaker 1: your next set of MLB tickets at seat Geek. That's
- 11:55Speaker 1: ten percent off any MLB tickets with promo code Territory ten.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Sure you click the link in the description to download
- 12:02Speaker 1: the app and have the code automatically added to your
- 12:05Speaker 1: account so you can use it later. Thank you, Seek Geek.
- 12:10Speaker 3: I mean, go ahead, Tony in the town.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Next week, show hey, Toni's coming to town and get
- 12:17Speaker 1: ten percent off to see the greatest player in the game.
- 12:22Speaker 1: It's that simple. So anyway, Dan, sorry to interrupt you,
- 12:24Speaker 1: but back to Runners in Scoring Position and Cody Clemens
- 12:26Speaker 1: by the way, too, you mentioned who uh since May
- 12:29Speaker 1: twenty ninth hitting three oh eight with a one oh
- 12:32Speaker 1: three to one ops, six homers, thirteen rbi. Uh, he's
- 12:36Speaker 1: been heating up Twins have.
- 12:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:39Speaker 1: We started the season talking about the Runners in scoring
- 12:41Speaker 1: position and hoping the Twins could keep it up. And
- 12:44Speaker 1: now we're at seventy five games and they're still in
- 12:46Speaker 1: the top six and basically every you know, major hitting
- 12:50Speaker 1: statistic in that space, and that's just been huge for
- 12:53Speaker 1: their success.
- 12:54Speaker 3: It has.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Cody last night got walked intentionally to load the bases.
- 12:59Speaker 3: That was fun. That was to bring up Royce Lewis,
- 13:03Speaker 3: which is, you know, I get the strategic play there.
- 13:07Speaker 2: But even the Twins were like, that was interesting because
- 13:10Speaker 2: Royce has been so good, but you know, he did
- 13:12Speaker 2: bring up a righty riding matchup. It made the double
- 13:14Speaker 2: play available at any base. But like a sign of
- 13:20Speaker 2: respect for Cody Clemens, who they acquired for cash on
- 13:23Speaker 2: April twenty sixth, twenty twenty five. Last night his first,
- 13:27Speaker 2: his second indiing home run was his thirtieth a Twin
- 13:30Speaker 2: in six hundred and seventeen played appearances. You talked about
- 13:35Speaker 2: a guy who they liked the talent because this is
- 13:37Speaker 2: a Golden Spikes finalist. He's a third round pick in
- 13:39Speaker 2: twenty eighteen. Like the pedigree is there, right, there's a
- 13:43Speaker 2: good player in there.
- 13:44Speaker 3: But for the first four years of his pro career
- 13:48Speaker 3: three plus, he really didn't get opportunities.
- 13:50Speaker 2: He was a guy came off the bench, he hit
- 13:53Speaker 2: home runs, but he just didn't get chances. And the
- 13:56Speaker 2: Twins gave him one because at the time they got him, Lewis,
- 13:59Speaker 2: Willie Castro, and Luke keishall were all injured and so
- 14:03Speaker 2: the Twins just needed an able bodied guy. But when
- 14:06Speaker 2: you acquire somebody for cash that's been DFA, it is
- 14:09Speaker 2: an absolute lottery ticket. You just you're hoping it works
- 14:12Speaker 2: because there are talented guys that come out of that,
- 14:14Speaker 2: but you don't know if it's gonna work. And I mean,
- 14:16Speaker 2: right now, he's flourishing. He is hitting lefties better than
- 14:20Speaker 2: they ever has. His ops is six ninety seven. There
- 14:23Speaker 2: was such a significant drop for him going into this year.
- 14:27Speaker 2: His career mark was like, it's like a seven ninety
- 14:29Speaker 2: seven ops against right handers and like a five to
- 14:32Speaker 2: twelve against left handers. Now, he hadn't had a ton
- 14:35Speaker 2: of opportunity against left handers. We're talking like one hundred
- 14:38Speaker 2: and fifty plate appearances in his career, but it was
- 14:40Speaker 2: enough of a deterrent that teams were like, no, we're
- 14:42Speaker 2: just gonna sit you.
- 14:43Speaker 3: At this point.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Right now, Derek Shelton is saying, we're not even really
- 14:46Speaker 2: pinch hitting for him. We believe in him, and he's
- 14:49Speaker 2: rewarding him. I mean, almost a seven hundred ops there
- 14:51Speaker 2: is really good. His ops plus is somewhere around one
- 14:54Speaker 2: point fifteen one sixteen for the season. Right now, he's
- 14:58Speaker 2: just opportunistic in that three run homer. You know, talking
- 15:02Speaker 2: to brooks Lee, Brooksley made fun of him. Those two
- 15:04Speaker 2: love to trash talk each other. Brooksley said, I was stunned.
- 15:08Speaker 2: He's like, what, he's a buck sixty five. I'm not
- 15:10Speaker 2: sure why they were scared of him, And and then
- 15:14Speaker 2: afterwards Lee said, but honestly, you know, they had a
- 15:17Speaker 2: really good plan. They were both thinking, look up and
- 15:21Speaker 2: over from Kumar Rocker and if you got it, swing,
- 15:24Speaker 2: swing hard. And Cody clementson a one hundred and five
- 15:28Speaker 2: mile hour screamer because that fence isn't very tall on
- 15:31Speaker 2: right field. It's probably about twelve feet off the ground
- 15:33Speaker 2: where he hit the wall for the home run and
- 15:35Speaker 2: it put them up five nothing.
- 15:37Speaker 3: It was a huge swing.
- 15:38Speaker 2: He's had a lot of those of his thirty I
- 15:40Speaker 2: believe eleven or twelve have given have tied the game
- 15:46Speaker 2: or put the Twins in the lead, including that monster
- 15:49Speaker 2: three run homer he hit it home on Friday night
- 15:51Speaker 2: and that nine to eight comeback victory against Saint Louis.
- 15:55Speaker 2: He he just does it. Even this is how like
- 15:59Speaker 2: important he is. He even suggested on Friday that Royce
- 16:02Speaker 2: Lewis changed his walk up song to Ei by Nelly,
- 16:06Speaker 2: and Royce did it and Homeward in that game, and
- 16:09Speaker 2: Royce said he's not changing it now, so like he's
- 16:11Speaker 2: gonna give it a try. Because so Cody Clemens is winning,
- 16:15Speaker 2: you know, on the field, moving around, playing wherever they
- 16:17Speaker 2: want him, thirty eight innings in center, hitting lefties, hitting
- 16:21Speaker 2: big home runs, and changing walk up songs.
- 16:23Speaker 1: That's the perfect walk up song for Royce Lewis for
- 16:25Speaker 1: some reason, I don't know, just vibe.
- 16:28Speaker 3: It just makes sense.
- 16:32Speaker 1: As we inch closer to that trade deadline. Obviously, there's
- 16:36Speaker 1: been a lot of focus on Byron Buckston and Dan
- 16:38Speaker 1: has his entire career writing on that, but there's also
- 16:43Speaker 1: there's also sort of that other side tyler to things
- 16:46Speaker 1: like Cody Clemens emerging.
- 16:48Speaker 4: Yeah, I hate to say it, but it's it is
- 16:51Speaker 4: baseball at the end of the day. And he's an
- 16:54Speaker 4: inexpensive utility player who's left handed and who's hitting for
- 16:59Speaker 4: power year, and he's a guy that doesn't have protection
- 17:03Speaker 4: like some other players on our team does, and things
- 17:06Speaker 4: like that. You know, he's going to look very attractive
- 17:09Speaker 4: to some teams and there's a potential world where he's
- 17:14Speaker 4: in another lineup. You know, after that deadline passes and
- 17:17Speaker 4: you know it's but to that point you hear all
- 17:20Speaker 4: the vibes and all the things, and it's like, man,
- 17:22Speaker 4: you just hope it doesn't. You hope the front office
- 17:25Speaker 4: takes that into account before they make a move like that,
- 17:29Speaker 4: which I think they would at this point. Like if
- 17:31Speaker 4: we're picking up momentum and speed, it's like, hey, we're
- 17:34Speaker 4: not going to make moves. Maybe we hold pat with
- 17:36Speaker 4: what we've got. You know, there's there's so much that
- 17:38Speaker 4: goes into it. But he is a guy like for
- 17:41Speaker 4: me as another team, this guy can play everywhere on
- 17:44Speaker 4: the field. He can do pretty much everything. He's you know,
- 17:47Speaker 4: he's a seemingly like he's turning into a leader as well.
- 17:50Speaker 4: Like Dan mentioned, he's got the pedigree like he's been
- 17:52Speaker 4: around baseball his entire life. He's not going to get
- 17:55Speaker 4: into trouble on the field doing something that you know
- 17:57Speaker 4: is a bonehead play things like that. It's just he
- 18:00Speaker 4: checks all the boxes for any team. But luckily for
- 18:04Speaker 4: now we've got him in the middle of our line
- 18:06Speaker 4: up and you know, hopefully come whatever the date is.
- 18:09Speaker 4: I know it moves around, but you know, whenever that
- 18:12Speaker 4: deadline passes, it would be sad, but you know, hopefully
- 18:14Speaker 4: he gets to stay here because that's he's He's definitely
- 18:17Speaker 4: a big piece right.
- 18:17Speaker 3: Now, breaking the hearts of four point.
- 18:23Speaker 1: It's the reality. Just like just like Dan warning everybody
- 18:27Speaker 1: before the season to enjoy their time with Joe, Ryan
- 18:30Speaker 1: Tyler is doing the same.
- 18:31Speaker 3: Now.
- 18:32Speaker 4: Well that's what we don't even talk about right.
- 18:37Speaker 1: One more net Like, obviously home runs and basis clearing
- 18:41Speaker 1: doubles are are obvious runners in scoring position moments that pop.
- 18:46Speaker 1: But there was a subtle one yesterday to Dan that
- 18:48Speaker 1: that stood out to you. I know it was. It
- 18:50Speaker 1: was a twelve two win, so who knows. The Twins
- 18:52Speaker 1: may have won easily either way, but a key uh
- 18:55Speaker 1: sort of under the radar, if you will, runners in
- 18:58Speaker 1: scoring position hit and the sing may have helped that
- 19:01Speaker 1: set that tone.
- 19:03Speaker 3: Yeah, and and Duff touched on it a little bit.
- 19:05Speaker 2: But Josh Bell like, okay, look, here's here's the situation, right,
- 19:08Speaker 2: Warna gets that bomb, Buck gets on Buck Steele's second base,
- 19:13Speaker 2: Buck gets to third on the grounder. Royce Lewis is
- 19:16Speaker 2: up with a man on third and royce Lewis chased
- 19:18Speaker 2: and he said he's he actually said it's been weird.
- 19:22Speaker 2: He's had a little bit of a tough time seeing
- 19:24Speaker 2: the ball in this park the last two days. And
- 19:27Speaker 2: you know, that's a like Globe Life Park has been.
- 19:31Speaker 2: It's not a very big hitters park. You know, to
- 19:35Speaker 2: get one out there is tough. And you know, there
- 19:38Speaker 2: have been some of these talks that like the Rangers
- 19:40Speaker 2: have become more of a pitching team. So it doesn't
- 19:43Speaker 2: shock me to hear Royce say that it's hard to
- 19:45Speaker 2: see in there for hitters. He struck out, and he
- 19:47Speaker 2: struck out on a three to two, you know, slider
- 19:50Speaker 2: off and all of a sudden you got two outs.
- 19:52Speaker 2: And Kumar Rocker has been a good pitcher. He came
- 19:55Speaker 2: out with a three fifty six the ra he left
- 19:57Speaker 2: with the four seventeen era last night, but his last
- 20:00Speaker 2: six outings like a two to sixteen era and looking
- 20:04Speaker 2: like a really solid starting pitcher. And you had him
- 20:07Speaker 2: on the ropes and Josh Bell just punched it in
- 20:09Speaker 2: the left field and like, I feel like that just
- 20:12Speaker 2: changes the inning for Kumar Rocker and sends him to
- 20:16Speaker 2: like if Kumar Rucker gets through Royce, Lewis and Josh Bell.
- 20:20Speaker 3: Uh.
- 20:20Speaker 2: He gets back to the dugout and he's like, all right, fine,
- 20:22Speaker 2: you know there was the bending, but it didn't break,
- 20:25Speaker 2: and you give up just a run instead. You go
- 20:28Speaker 2: back deflated because you're getting up a run. But Josh
- 20:31Speaker 2: Bell is this is Josh Bell in a nutshell this year.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Like it's it's crazy when you look at it. Overall,
- 20:37Speaker 2: I think Josh Bell is like a two thirty nine,
- 20:39Speaker 2: two forty average for the season. It's not very impressive,
- 20:42Speaker 2: but he's hitting three thirty eight with runners in scoring position.
- 20:47Speaker 2: And the second on the team, brooks Lee, who also
- 20:50Speaker 2: has sort of a low average overall in the season,
- 20:53Speaker 2: it's hitting three thirty nine with runners in scoring position.
- 20:56Speaker 2: And this team is so opportunistic with runners in scoring
- 21:00Speaker 2: and it is a streaky stat and it is a
- 21:02Speaker 2: fluky stat, but now we're talking about seventy five games
- 21:07Speaker 2: of it, and they are what do we say, fourth
- 21:10Speaker 2: and average Zach and fourth and OPS in the league
- 21:14Speaker 2: with runners in scoring.
- 21:14Speaker 3: Position as a team, and.
- 21:16Speaker 2: This is like that, Yeah, overall, you look at this
- 21:19Speaker 2: group and they're not that impressive from an overall standpoint.
- 21:23Speaker 2: I mean, like OPS plus wise, I don't even think
- 21:26Speaker 2: they're at one hundred. I think there were ninety seven
- 21:28Speaker 2: going into yesterday, and yesterday it might change it a
- 21:30Speaker 2: little bit, put them at ninety eight or ninety nine.
- 21:32Speaker 2: But they are under the league average as an offense
- 21:35Speaker 2: as a whole, and yet they are seventh in runs,
- 21:38Speaker 2: and it's because they have been so consistent with runners
- 21:41Speaker 2: in scoring position. They're just good vibes. Guys are putting
- 21:44Speaker 2: together good at bats and I think that that Bell
- 21:47Speaker 2: one just exemplified what they're about, because you know, Rocker
- 21:52Speaker 2: never recovered from that.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Yeah, fourth and average fourth in ops and number one
- 22:00Speaker 1: and their batting average on balls and play, which certainly
- 22:03Speaker 1: helps as well. Take a quick break, we'll be right back.
- 22:07Speaker 1: We'll talk Zebbie, Matthews, mckabel, and Tee up the final
- 22:11Speaker 1: game of this Rangers series right after this.

- 23:16Speaker 1: My favorite part of these two games might have been
- 23:21Speaker 1: Zebie Matthews having the exact opposite kind of game that
- 23:25Speaker 1: he had last time out in what was an eleven
- 23:28Speaker 1: nothing lost to the Tigers. The Twins almost got him
- 23:31Speaker 1: back to even and run differential across the two games,
- 23:34Speaker 1: but seven innings pitch, two runs, eight hits, four strikeouts,
- 23:37Speaker 1: Dan it wasn't necessarily lights out across the board, but
- 23:41Speaker 1: coming off a bullpen game, yes, the Twins have the
- 23:43Speaker 1: day off on Wednesday, but kind of exactly what you need,
- 23:45Speaker 1: I think Tyler, to have him come up and respond
- 23:48Speaker 1: that way.
- 23:50Speaker 4: Yeah, especially when you tax your guys, which granted, everybody
- 23:53Speaker 4: threw well and so it was pretty clean as far
- 23:55Speaker 4: as the bullpen game would go. But you know, when
- 23:58Speaker 4: you can have a start that deep into a game,
- 24:01Speaker 4: it's it's just a relief for everybody. I've said this
- 24:03Speaker 4: a few times throughout the year, but you know, for
- 24:06Speaker 4: for Shelter even it makes managing that game easier knowing
- 24:10Speaker 4: that at some point, okay, we're past this sinning now,
- 24:14Speaker 4: We're past these guys now, and now it's like, okay,
- 24:16Speaker 4: we got our back end, Hi, sir, we got our
- 24:19Speaker 4: back end. Guys uh coming in to slam the door.
- 24:22Speaker 4: And it makes those decisions easier. It takes stress off
- 24:25Speaker 4: for a lot of people. And you know, it's it's
- 24:27Speaker 4: a momentum builder. You know, the starter comes out and
- 24:30Speaker 4: he's just shoving Hi. You want to say hi, hey buddy.
- 24:37Speaker 1: Everyone.
- 24:40Speaker 4: But yeah, so it's you know, anytime a guy, especially
- 24:43Speaker 4: after a bullpen day and leading into an off day
- 24:45Speaker 4: even for that matter, you know, some of those guys
- 24:47Speaker 4: have been thrown a lot, maybe needed an extra day.
- 24:50Speaker 4: That's stuff that goes a long way, that gets overlooked
- 24:53Speaker 4: throughout the course of the year. And when a guy
- 24:55Speaker 4: can step up like that, especially after his last one,
- 24:58Speaker 4: have a good, good.
- 24:59Speaker 1: Doubting that, you know, that's all you can ask for.
- 25:04Speaker 3: Yeah, No, it was huge, you see.
- 25:08Speaker 2: I think even Roy would agree that, No, it was
- 25:11Speaker 2: a monster out and like, look they were so they
- 25:14Speaker 2: were taxed.
- 25:15Speaker 3: I was ready to write this story.
- 25:17Speaker 2: I talked to Shelty about it ahead of the game
- 25:21Speaker 2: about you know, you have this part of the bullpen
- 25:24Speaker 2: that you can access and they're they're kind of getting
- 25:26Speaker 2: to become firm between the Bonda Andrew Morris and jo
- 25:31Speaker 2: wndros Gomez.
- 25:32Speaker 3: Like, you feel good about that part of your bullpen.
- 25:35Speaker 2: But all those guys, you know, Eric Orsey, Taylor Rogers,
- 25:39Speaker 2: all those guys that he uses in lanes to get
- 25:42Speaker 2: out of spots, had been used like four times in
- 25:44Speaker 2: six days and then they're feeling it. They're they're they're
- 25:48Speaker 2: getting used a lot because the team has won and
- 25:50Speaker 2: played a lot of close games. So Zebby going deep
- 25:53Speaker 2: the offense, giving Zeby the space to operate.
- 25:56Speaker 3: Those were big deals.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Last night at a time where we would have seen
- 26:01Speaker 2: the sixth, seventh, and eighth guys get chances. We would
- 26:04Speaker 2: have seen Adams. We would have if Zebby goes five.
- 26:07Speaker 2: We see justin Lawrence. We see Cody Laws and Travis
- 26:11Speaker 2: Adams in leverage spots, which you know, all those guys
- 26:14Speaker 2: can are are capable, they're in the big leagues, they're capable.
- 26:17Speaker 2: But also it's been a crapshoot with what you're going
- 26:20Speaker 2: to get in big spots from them, and so absolutely
- 26:24Speaker 2: for Zebby to go deep like that, and you know
- 26:26Speaker 2: it's funny. Zebby got hit pretty hard and Detroit, but
- 26:29Speaker 2: afterwards he was kind of like he wasn't as hard
- 26:34Speaker 2: for a guy to give up seven runs over six
- 26:36Speaker 2: and three homers.
- 26:36Speaker 3: I think he thought two of those.
- 26:38Speaker 2: Homers were you know it was I remember it was
- 26:41Speaker 2: like nine eate degrees with the humidity of the balls
- 26:44Speaker 2: flying out of Detroit. And I don't think he took
- 26:46Speaker 2: it as badly upon want himself as as he could have,
- 26:50Speaker 2: because it wasn't like walks and stuff like that loaded
- 26:54Speaker 2: up the bases. He thought he had pitched better than
- 26:56Speaker 2: he did, and then it could turn around. And you
- 26:59Speaker 2: saw last night because he was in Bend but don't
- 27:02Speaker 2: break mode. He was throwing strikes. He's putting the ball,
- 27:05Speaker 2: you know, being efficient, putting the ball in play, making
- 27:07Speaker 2: sure it was being put in play, and letting his
- 27:09Speaker 2: defense work for him. And sometimes that can be a
- 27:12Speaker 2: little bit of a suspect strategy with the Twins with
- 27:16Speaker 2: their defense, but it worked last night.
- 27:17Speaker 3: They played some good defense behind him. He made a great.
- 27:20Speaker 2: Play on that line drive double play that he caught,
- 27:23Speaker 2: you know, I think it was their third hitter, and
- 27:27Speaker 2: hit a liner right back at him and doubled off
- 27:29Speaker 2: the runner on first base, like Zebi did a good
- 27:32Speaker 2: job and it was much needed because again that bullpen
- 27:35Speaker 2: was really really on fumes. And now they get the
- 27:38Speaker 2: day off and that's two days off and instead of
- 27:41Speaker 2: being four of six when they come back on Thursday,
- 27:43Speaker 2: they're four of eight.
- 27:44Speaker 3: They got Joe Ryan. That's you need.
- 27:47Speaker 2: Them for that game when Joe Ryan pitches, because it's
- 27:51Speaker 2: promises to be a low scoring game or a competitive
- 27:53Speaker 2: game that Twins have a chance to win and sweep.
- 27:56Speaker 1: Right. The other pitching forform Mients of note on Tuesday
- 28:02Speaker 1: was Kyle Hagashioka, making his major league pitching debut in
- 28:06Speaker 1: the ninth inning for the Rangers man that was Tyler, Like,
- 28:10Speaker 1: is the thinking there, I'm gonna intentionally throw it as
- 28:14Speaker 1: slow as like a ten year old to throw you off.
- 28:17Speaker 1: It was majestic, those floaters.
- 28:20Speaker 3: It is.
- 28:21Speaker 1: I think it's one.
- 28:22Speaker 4: Honestly, they've probably figured out analytics wise, like hey, don't
- 28:27Speaker 4: try to just throw strikes because they're gonna pummel you.
- 28:30Speaker 4: It's it's see how soft you can throw it, because
- 28:33Speaker 4: you know, who was a brock Holt. I think for
- 28:36Speaker 4: a while had the record for like slowest strike thrown.
- 28:39Speaker 4: There's like thirty eight miles an hour or something. But yeah,
- 28:42Speaker 4: I think these guys got tired of one giving up bombs,
- 28:46Speaker 4: but two, like it's kind of a liability out there,
- 28:48Speaker 4: like guys squares one back up back at you, like
- 28:52Speaker 4: it's gonna be a rocket that you're not used to
- 28:54Speaker 4: necessarily seeing coming at you like that.
- 28:55Speaker 1: But yeah, it's one.
- 28:57Speaker 4: It's and in the moment, like you know, at that
- 29:00Speaker 4: point the gloves are off, everybody's like all right, we're good,
- 29:02Speaker 4: like you know, enjoying it for what it is. And
- 29:05Speaker 4: it's actually shocking that that's his first pitching outing for
- 29:08Speaker 4: a guy it's been around as long as he has.
- 29:10Speaker 1: But yeah, that's funny.
- 29:12Speaker 4: You try to put some sort of magic on those
- 29:14Speaker 4: before you throw them, because you know it's a it's
- 29:17Speaker 4: one of the the hitters aren't afraid to take that
- 29:19Speaker 4: home run for sure, even though nobody else counts it.
- 29:22Speaker 4: They're they're trying to get there when those guys come
- 29:24Speaker 4: into the game.
- 29:25Speaker 1: At least when you throw that slowly, plenty of time
- 29:27Speaker 1: to brace yourself for the hit, you know, yeah.
- 29:29Speaker 3: Just shield yourself right.
- 29:33Speaker 2: With MLB identified those if we do a sky report,
- 29:37Speaker 2: MLB identified those as sliders, and it was thirty had.
- 29:42Speaker 3: A little spin on it.
- 29:44Speaker 2: He was sitting thirty eight to forty two miles an
- 29:47Speaker 2: hour with his slider last night.
- 29:49Speaker 1: It's a slider change up, slider change up.
- 29:52Speaker 3: Hey, one point about that.
- 29:54Speaker 2: It gave Kyler Fedco a chance and he's went over
- 29:57Speaker 2: four in his debut the night before, which he.
- 30:00Speaker 3: Didn't get hit. Yeah, he he didn't get the hit,
- 30:06Speaker 3: but he got a sackfly off of Hi got Shioka
- 30:11Speaker 3: and like it was it was cool. Look, I'll just
- 30:14Speaker 3: say this.
- 30:15Speaker 2: I did a little more diving into Fedco over the
- 30:18Speaker 2: two games and figured out this is a guy whose
- 30:21Speaker 2: career was a session essentially on life support. Twice, he
- 30:24Speaker 2: went on the development list at the minor league level twice.
- 30:28Speaker 2: He going into spring training I think he said last year,
- 30:32Speaker 2: maybe it was in twenty four. He was expected to
- 30:35Speaker 2: start at Wichita this season, and in spring training he
- 30:40Speaker 2: was playing at Cedar Rapids and backing up.
- 30:43Speaker 3: He's like, I knew my.
- 30:45Speaker 2: Career was like I could be released the any time,
- 30:47Speaker 2: like for a guy who like he's very aware, and
- 30:50Speaker 2: they asked him to make wholesale changes and do the.
- 30:53Speaker 3: Bat speed program.
- 30:54Speaker 2: They said, look, dude, you've been a slug like you've
- 30:58Speaker 2: been a contact guy, a good decision guy your whole career,
- 31:01Speaker 2: and now we need you to become a power hitter
- 31:04Speaker 2: because if your first base and left field, you need
- 31:06Speaker 2: to hit for power. And he has transformed himself and
- 31:09Speaker 2: that's why you see him just taking some huge hacks
- 31:13Speaker 2: at pitches when he's up there, and he's done a
- 31:16Speaker 2: good job. I think he has forty five home runs
- 31:18Speaker 2: the last two years and the miners or something like
- 31:20Speaker 2: that in fifteen this year. I know it was thirty
- 31:22Speaker 2: last year, I believe, but look just like cool for
- 31:26Speaker 2: him to get that moment, even though it's a position
- 31:28Speaker 2: player get the RBI, his famili's here, and you know
- 31:33Speaker 2: he's he's definitely earned it. It's one of those things
- 31:35Speaker 2: where it's like you love those stories because this guy
- 31:37Speaker 2: could have been out of baseball really easy, and he
- 31:40Speaker 2: gets an RBI out out of that hilarious moment in
- 31:43Speaker 2: the ninth inning and gets his first good positive baseball
- 31:48Speaker 2: memory other than, of course the debut, which is amazing,
- 31:51Speaker 2: Like just getting there is such an achievement, but he's
- 31:53Speaker 2: like a twelfth round pick and very realistic about what
- 31:56Speaker 2: he's up against.
- 31:58Speaker 1: For the record, ESPN identified all of higashi Okus pitches
- 32:02Speaker 1: asphis is, so.
- 32:04Speaker 3: Yes, they were. That was absolutely what they want.
- 32:07Speaker 1: Thirteen epis pitches is what I should say. You can't.
- 32:15Speaker 1: You can't let them out of the inning in thirteen pitches.
- 32:17Speaker 1: I mean, you gotta work the counts, you gotta try
- 32:19Speaker 1: to at least wait to wait for one to hit Tyler, like, hey.
- 32:22Speaker 3: Everybody's looking to go to Cancun for a day, okay,
- 32:24Speaker 3: Like they were. They were ready for the season to
- 32:26Speaker 3: be over for a day.
- 32:27Speaker 1: Tyler. If you're in the dugout and a hitter gets
- 32:30Speaker 1: out against a position pitcher, do you do you ras
- 32:32Speaker 1: them do you just say nothing?
- 32:33Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, it's it's one like you you picked the
- 32:36Speaker 4: right timing. Well, it's tough too if the guys already
- 32:40Speaker 4: had a bad day, because it does happen like guys,
- 32:42Speaker 4: the guy's already over and then it's like all right,
- 32:44Speaker 4: position players, and then this.
- 32:45Speaker 3: Guy's like, please don't shrink out, you know, it's like and.
- 32:48Speaker 4: Then they still get out and happened last Yeah, it's
- 32:52Speaker 4: a tough one, like it's a it's unfortunate, but yes,
- 32:57Speaker 4: you definitely, even if it's a few days later, like
- 33:01Speaker 4: it's safe, safe territory to go in and be like, hey,
- 33:04Speaker 4: so you know what you see with the gutknight, you
- 33:06Speaker 4: know you can have some fun with it.
- 33:08Speaker 2: But yeah, Tristan Tristan Gray, and yeah, Tristan Gray hit
- 33:13Speaker 2: a bomb on that's the thing was over five.
- 33:17Speaker 1: Like at least it was almost a home run, you know,
- 33:20Speaker 1: like the track.
- 33:22Speaker 2: Yeah, uh, he's the only guy he's only started that
- 33:26Speaker 2: didn't have a hit.
- 33:26Speaker 3: Last night they had a season high seventeen hits and
- 33:29Speaker 3: he went over five for somebody track.
- 33:32Speaker 2: But but I'll tell you what, man, he absolutely even
- 33:34Speaker 2: though he didn't have a hit, he made a fantastic
- 33:38Speaker 2: catch on a blooper or center field, like he looked
- 33:40Speaker 2: like a wide receiver going out and caught one over
- 33:43Speaker 2: his head like this in front of Buston, Like it's
- 33:46Speaker 2: one of those plays where you're worried they're gonna collide.
- 33:48Speaker 2: But Buxton was so deep that Buckston was not gonna
- 33:51Speaker 2: catch it. And Gray made a great catch, so he
- 33:53Speaker 2: can go home saying he contributed that got them through
- 33:56Speaker 2: an inning fast, but man, he came up about four
- 33:59Speaker 2: feet short of ending that.
- 34:00Speaker 3: Oh for in a in a good way, and like
- 34:03Speaker 3: you say, it's now for a couple of days.
- 34:06Speaker 1: We're running out of time because I sidetracked us there,
- 34:09Speaker 1: but really quickly. Dan h some some more positive news
- 34:12Speaker 1: for the Twins coming out of Triple A in the
- 34:14Speaker 1: form of Mick Abel.
- 34:16Speaker 3: Yeah, mckable.
- 34:17Speaker 2: Five innings, five strikeouts, one earned run, velocities all look good,
- 34:22Speaker 2: good swings and misses.
- 34:24Speaker 3: Was so efficient. You know, he was supposed to go four.
- 34:26Speaker 2: And sixty five pitches and at the end of four innings,
- 34:29Speaker 2: I think he was at fifty two pitches. So they
- 34:31Speaker 2: got him to get one more inning, which is a
- 34:34Speaker 2: huge deal when you're coming back it's the build up.
- 34:37Speaker 2: It's how many times does he get up so that
- 34:40Speaker 2: the body can get used to getting out there and
- 34:43Speaker 2: going high velocity max velocity for another.
- 34:46Speaker 3: Inn and so for him to get five.
- 34:49Speaker 2: I mean, look, I'm not going to say that, not
- 34:52Speaker 2: going to say that they're going to bring him up
- 34:53Speaker 2: on Sunday for sure, but he's ready, like they should
- 34:56Speaker 2: bring him up on Sunday, if not Monday, it'll be
- 34:58Speaker 2: whatever way they decided to slot him. And the bullpen
- 35:01Speaker 2: day is slotted for Sunday. I believe in Arizona, yep.
- 35:05Speaker 2: So you know it's definitely a spot where hey, you know,
- 35:09Speaker 2: mickabel looks ready to go. It's just do they give
- 35:12Speaker 2: him an extra day in there because he's coming back
- 35:15Speaker 2: and it's possible then he would come back Monday at
- 35:18Speaker 2: home against the Dodgers. But I think he's ready.
- 35:22Speaker 1: There you have it, Mickabele nearly back. Twins are off
- 35:27Speaker 1: today Wednesday, back for the finale in Texas on Thursday.
- 35:30Speaker 1: That's Joe Ryan against Jack Lighter. Twins couldn't ask for
- 35:34Speaker 1: a better picture on the mound to hope for another sweep,
- 35:37Speaker 1: and then they're off to Arizona. We'll be back with
- 35:39Speaker 1: you Friday. Before that series, we'll only have one game
- 35:42Speaker 1: to talk about, so I don't know. If you have
