- 0:58Speaker 1: Hello, Legame, Mornan Fellas.
- 1:01Speaker 3: All right, so we're just discussing this. Uh, it's it's
- 1:04Speaker 3: pretty crazy. The Broncos feel like they're comfortably in a
- 1:06Speaker 3: playoff spot right now. The issue is they are currently
- 1:10Speaker 3: losing or have lost tie breakers. The teams in front
- 1:12Speaker 3: of them, and now with the Colts and the Bengals
- 1:15Speaker 3: still left on the schedule, they could lose tie breakers
- 1:17Speaker 3: for teams that are behind them as well. We're looking
- 1:21Speaker 3: at the Colts remaining schedule. It's like the easiest thing
- 1:25Speaker 3: you can have. It's Titans, It's Jags, and who is
- 1:27Speaker 3: the other team?
- 1:27Speaker 2: Vic Didville Jacksonville Titans and Giants?
- 1:31Speaker 1: Giants.
- 1:32Speaker 3: If they beat the Broncos this weekend, they have a
- 1:35Speaker 3: really good opportunity with the tiebreaker just to jump them
- 1:37Speaker 3: because of that, is this essentially a playoff game for
- 1:40Speaker 3: the Broncos, Like, is this one they need to win
- 1:42Speaker 3: this weekend?
- 1:45Speaker 5: Well, I think all four are because AFC record is
- 1:48Speaker 5: the is the tiebreaker. If anything derails the Broncos other
- 1:52Speaker 5: than I had to head with one of these teams,
- 1:56Speaker 5: it's because, uh, if they somehow tie Miami, for example,
- 2:01Speaker 5: that means they will lose the AFC record tiebreaker because
- 2:06Speaker 5: Miami has one more.
- 2:08Speaker 1: AFC win right now than the Broncos do.
- 2:10Speaker 5: So if they somehow tie, the Broncos aren't winning that tiebreaker.
- 2:16Speaker 5: Broncos aren't winning a tiebreaker with the Ravens right now.
- 2:20Speaker 5: They wouldn't win a tiebreaker with the Chargers, you know,
- 2:22Speaker 5: you get another crack at them next week, and if
- 2:26Speaker 5: you lose to the Colts.
- 2:28Speaker 1: You don't win a tiebreaker with the Colts.
- 2:30Speaker 5: So yeah, I think they have to approach all four
- 2:33Speaker 5: of these games like playoff games because they're they're all
- 2:36Speaker 5: AFC games, and potentially three of them are against teams
- 2:43Speaker 5: they could be somewhere in the playoff tie breaking you know,
- 2:48Speaker 5: Swamp with you know, the Chiefs and the finale. It's
- 2:52Speaker 5: a totally different thing whether you know who needs what
- 2:55Speaker 5: by that time or you know how much that will
- 2:58Speaker 5: matter to either team.
- 3:01Speaker 2: When they were approached by the NFL to flex that
- 3:04Speaker 2: Chargers game, right and it's not going to be next Thursday,
- 3:07Speaker 2: the intent there, and I could see why the Broncos
- 3:10Speaker 2: did it because they looked at it and said, well,
- 3:11Speaker 2: this will give us extra time to prepare for Cincinnati
- 3:15Speaker 2: and that's the game we need to win. As you
- 3:18Speaker 2: look at it now, maybe they did themselves a disfavor.
- 3:22Speaker 2: The Chargers game is one that really would have been
- 3:25Speaker 2: valuable winning that game if you're tied with the Chargers.
- 3:30Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I think I think had they not
- 3:34Speaker 5: been able to flex the Bengals out of that.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Thursday game. They wouldn't have done it, Vic.
- 3:42Speaker 5: I think they only did it because they were directly
- 3:45Speaker 5: impacting a team they were going to face. So they
- 3:49Speaker 5: get extra time for a team they were going to face,
- 3:54Speaker 5: and they rolled the dice that the Chargers will be
- 3:57Speaker 5: as equally, you know, on equal footing going into a
- 4:02Speaker 5: Thursday game as they would and so they're on equal
- 4:06Speaker 5: footing with the Chargers and they have an advantage.
- 4:09Speaker 1: They tank over the Bengals, and I think that was
- 4:11Speaker 1: the thank it gotcha.
- 4:13Speaker 4: It's all very interesting to me, Jeff, how we're sitting
- 4:16Speaker 4: here and I feel very calm about this weekend's games.
- 4:21Speaker 4: Brent and Vic also think.
- 4:23Speaker 1: That just means you got a new prescription.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Mostly not, but it could be.
- 4:28Speaker 4: I don't The Colts are unique, but they don't frighten
- 4:31Speaker 4: me because I've looked at all of their numbers and
- 4:32Speaker 4: have looked at a lot of different things. Jeff, they
- 4:35Speaker 4: don't really do anything well really. I mean, they can
- 4:39Speaker 4: be middle of the pack maybe mostly they're in the
- 4:42Speaker 4: twenties and sometimes low twenties and different things. What do
- 4:45Speaker 4: you think they do well besides Richardson busting people up
- 4:48Speaker 4: running from the quarterback spot.
- 4:51Speaker 5: Well, I think what they do is they are the
- 4:53Speaker 5: team where you beat them for fifty nine minutes and
- 4:58Speaker 5: then he On corks at eighty five five yards touchdown
- 5:02Speaker 5: up the sideline because you blow one coverage in the game.
- 5:07Speaker 5: That's so if they hang close, they pop a big
- 5:11Speaker 5: play somewhere. They won't do anything right for three quarters
- 5:17Speaker 5: and then they pop two big plays on people. You know,
- 5:20Speaker 5: the running back gets loose, or Richardson just drops back
- 5:24Speaker 5: and heaves it.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Uh, that's what they do.
- 5:27Speaker 5: They're They're like a maddening, you know, Migraine team because
- 5:32Speaker 5: at the end of the game, I'm sure all of
- 5:34Speaker 5: the you know, the six teams they've lost to have
- 5:37Speaker 5: all looked at the stats and said, we should have
- 5:40Speaker 5: won that game because they just pop a big play
- 5:44Speaker 5: out of nowhere, Like he'll he'll miss eight throws in
- 5:48Speaker 5: a row and then suddenly he'll hit a big one,
- 5:52Speaker 5: you know, down the numbers, and that that's the thing
- 5:54Speaker 5: you got to watch for, is you just can't keep
- 5:57Speaker 5: that let them hang around, so they're one big play matters.
- 6:00Speaker 3: That's what I'm saying, Jeff, Like this is like playing
- 6:02Speaker 3: a college offense. Like they run true read option. They
- 6:06Speaker 3: have a conventional running game with Jonathan Taylor, but they
- 6:08Speaker 3: have no issues putting Anthony Richardson on just quarterback power
- 6:13Speaker 3: and saying run some people over because he's got like
- 6:16Speaker 3: a forty seven percent completion percentage this year and they
- 6:19Speaker 3: need to find waste of manufacture yards because they can't
- 6:22Speaker 3: do it consistently through the air.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Well.
- 6:24Speaker 5: If there's any fan base that knows exactly what this
- 6:28Speaker 5: looks like, that I welcome you to twenty eleven. I mean,
- 6:31Speaker 5: this is exactly what the Broncos did with Tim, and
- 6:36Speaker 5: it's exactly why they did it with Tim. His completion
- 6:40Speaker 5: percentage was like forty nine percent. I mean, they they
- 6:43Speaker 5: put him in read options, they put him in power.
- 6:46Speaker 1: They they did what the cults are doing right now.
- 6:50Speaker 3: So with that one thing I mentioned earlier this week,
- 6:53Speaker 3: I know it's probably gonna be a little bit more
- 6:55Speaker 3: time until Riley moskeets back in the lineup. If there
- 6:57Speaker 3: was a game where it doesn't hurt you as much
- 7:00Speaker 3: him being in, isn't it this one with the guy
- 7:03Speaker 3: who completes forty seven percent of his passes. You know,
- 7:05Speaker 3: Jameis Winston. I know, if there's the pick sixes. But
- 7:07Speaker 3: he can beat guys. As we saw last or two
- 7:09Speaker 3: weeks ago. If Rollie Muss was gonna miss a game,
- 7:12Speaker 3: if it's like this one hurts the least.
- 7:14Speaker 1: Maybe, But I mean, this is one where you can't
- 7:16Speaker 1: have the bust. You can't play.
- 7:18Speaker 5: You can't play fifty eight plays right, and then the
- 7:21Speaker 5: fifty ninth play you drift and you give up the
- 7:25Speaker 5: sixty yard touchdown.
- 7:26Speaker 1: That's how this team beats people.
- 7:28Speaker 5: They hang around, hang around, and then they pop on
- 7:31Speaker 5: they get they answer a question right as it were,
- 7:35Speaker 5: and that's what you have to avoid. Yeah, you know,
- 7:38Speaker 5: it wouldn't be as big a deal to have Riley
- 7:40Speaker 5: Moss and man coverage, you know, battling the way he does.
- 7:46Speaker 5: But they can't have the backups or the replacements drift
- 7:50Speaker 5: in coverage because they think the balls never come in
- 7:53Speaker 5: their way because the one time it does, it's gonna
- 7:56Speaker 5: be a touchdown.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Hey, did Bill Belich get picked out of the NFL club?
- 8:01Speaker 2: Is that why he's going back to college?
- 8:04Speaker 1: You know, I think it's one of the most amazing things.
- 8:08Speaker 5: You know, just talking to people already about it and
- 8:10Speaker 5: texting people, I think there's some of that. I think
- 8:16Speaker 5: This is him basically saying, if you won't give me
- 8:20Speaker 5: the control I want to coach again, I'm going to
- 8:22Speaker 5: go get it somewhere. And I think you might see
- 8:27Speaker 5: this a little more until they change the nil and
- 8:32Speaker 5: the portal, if you know, unless they changed it in
- 8:35Speaker 5: some fashion. I know a lot of NFL guys suddenly
- 8:39Speaker 5: look at college football is one year free agency on
- 8:44Speaker 5: the roster, and that gives you a lot more control.
- 8:47Speaker 5: It used to be people thought, well, you have more
- 8:50Speaker 5: control over your team building in the NFL because you
- 8:54Speaker 5: can move the pieces around.
- 8:57Speaker 1: You can move them around.
- 8:58Speaker 5: Faster in college right now, at least under the current system.
- 9:03Speaker 5: And I think that's the attraction for him. It's more
- 9:07Speaker 5: transactional is the word people are using, and that appeals
- 9:11Speaker 5: to him. And I was fortunate enough to be asked
- 9:15Speaker 5: to be on the Hall of Fame Centennial committee and
- 9:19Speaker 5: Bill was on there too, and I spent two days
- 9:23Speaker 5: sitting next to him in the meetings, and you know,
- 9:25Speaker 5: I got a chance to talk to him about general
- 9:28Speaker 5: football things in between the breaks and everything, and.
- 9:34Speaker 1: I could see in a room full of.
- 9:36Speaker 5: College players, if he is that guy, the guy he
- 9:41Speaker 5: was in those meetings, that that could appeal to some
- 9:45Speaker 5: college football players, and I think it's a side of
- 9:48Speaker 5: him he doesn't show very often, and if he shows
- 9:51Speaker 5: it to college football players, I think he could have
- 9:54Speaker 5: some success.
- 9:55Speaker 4: Jeff, what do you think about his idea as to
- 9:58Speaker 4: make North Carolina Simple a feeder team to the National
- 10:03Speaker 4: Football League. I mean he's basically said, we're gonna run
- 10:06Speaker 4: pro style offense. If you want to get to the league,
- 10:08Speaker 4: I'm going to get you there. And obviously he hired
- 10:12Speaker 4: Michael Lombardi to be the general manager of North Carolina Football.
- 10:17Speaker 4: This is pretty big stuff. These guys know the NFL.
- 10:20Speaker 4: Is that a selling point you think for some of
- 10:22Speaker 4: these guys? And will he treat it like an NFL team?
- 10:26Speaker 5: Well, I I would say, I give you two words
- 10:29Speaker 5: to somebody who did it before, Nick Saban Uh. Nick
- 10:33Speaker 5: is generally credited with when he did it summ at
- 10:36Speaker 5: Michigan State, and he did it some at LSU. But
- 10:40Speaker 5: when he got to Alabama. When he first got to Alabama,
- 10:43Speaker 5: I knew general managers and scouts who went to Tuscaloosa
- 10:47Speaker 5: and said, Saban's the first guy we've seen with a
- 10:51Speaker 5: draft board essentially for high school prospects and Saban at
- 10:56Speaker 5: that time had hired a bunch of young twenty some
- 11:00Speaker 5: thing want to be coaches and worked them twenty hours
- 11:04Speaker 5: a day, and they basically constructed a personnel department like
- 11:08Speaker 5: you would have in the NFL. And Nick was doing
- 11:10Speaker 5: it twenty years ago at Alabama and look at the
- 11:14Speaker 5: success he had. And Nick is a former Belichick assistant,
- 11:18Speaker 5: and I think I think Bill saw how Nick did it,
- 11:22Speaker 5: and that's how they're gonna do it at North Carolina.
- 11:24Speaker 1: So this is a model.
- 11:27Speaker 5: But really, Saban's already done it and people have copied it.
- 11:31Speaker 5: Your big time Power five schools right now are all
- 11:35Speaker 5: doing it this way because of the portal. The portal
- 11:40Speaker 5: looks like an NFL team's personnel board when they have
- 11:44Speaker 5: all the other team's rostered players. That's how they prepare
- 11:48Speaker 5: for free agency. It's how they prepare for the draft.
- 11:52Speaker 5: So yeah, it's you know, the two are merging. Yeah,
- 11:55Speaker 5: and it'll continue to do this and unless they somehow
- 11:59Speaker 5: closed the portal or change some of the.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Nil and legay to take it a step further. You know,
- 12:04Speaker 2: agents play such an active role in NFL free agency
- 12:08Speaker 2: in college sports today. In college football specifically, there are
- 12:12Speaker 2: random dudes calling players, dming players because social media allows
- 12:16Speaker 2: that now and saying, hey, what's it going to take
- 12:20Speaker 2: for you to transfer? We got something, we got something cooking,
- 12:23Speaker 2: And they'll be brokering deals from a couch in Schenectady
- 12:28Speaker 2: for a player in California. It's the craziest thing I've
- 12:31Speaker 2: ever seen agents getting actively involved in where an athlete
- 12:35Speaker 2: plays football.
- 12:37Speaker 5: And some of them are seventeen eighteen years old. Now,
- 12:39Speaker 5: I mean it's you know, look at the recruit of
- 12:43Speaker 5: Flip to Michigan from LSU, the quarterback Underwood. I've been
- 12:48Speaker 5: told that was an eleven million dollars deal to do it,
- 12:51Speaker 5: And I mean, that's that's that's where we're at in
- 12:55Speaker 5: college football, and guys for entering the portal, you know,
- 12:59Speaker 5: after one year at schools, you know, even after good seasons,
- 13:04Speaker 5: you know, guys are entering the portal. They just want
- 13:06Speaker 5: a different environment or a different position, coach, or a
- 13:09Speaker 5: better deal. So I think Belichick sees this this sort
- 13:13Speaker 5: of one year free agency and he can build a
- 13:16Speaker 5: team however the hell he wants. And you know, look,
- 13:20Speaker 5: I know he's irascible and all of the things. You know,
- 13:25Speaker 5: I've been on the receiving end. When I've asked questions
- 13:27Speaker 5: he didn't like. I mean, it's it's all there, we
- 13:31Speaker 5: all know it. But if nobody thinks this guy can
- 13:35Speaker 5: coach football, then you're just mental. I mean, the guy
- 13:39Speaker 5: won more than anybody. And yeah, the quarterback may be
- 13:44Speaker 5: the greatest winner of all time. But great quarterbacks need
- 13:49Speaker 5: great coaches like great coaches need great quarterbacks.
- 13:52Speaker 3: Yeah, it always makes me laugh. And when I'm looking
- 13:54Speaker 3: on Twitter now and I see so and so has
- 13:57Speaker 3: agreed to a new deal to stay at Arizona State
- 13:59Speaker 3: or something like that, You're just like cash. It's bizarre.
- 14:01Speaker 3: One last thing for you, Legy, You always appreciate the time.
- 14:05Speaker 3: Going back to one final question about the game this weekend,
- 14:08Speaker 3: the Bronco is the best thing they do. It feels
- 14:10Speaker 3: like he's get pressure on the quarterback like their elite
- 14:13Speaker 3: level NFL's best at pressuring quarterbacks and getting sacks. Anthony
- 14:18Speaker 3: Richardson has taken eleven sacks in nine games this year.
- 14:20Speaker 3: He does not get sacked very often. Is that a
- 14:23Speaker 3: byproduct of him being a monster like Ben Roethlisberger? Is
- 14:26Speaker 3: that a good offensive line? How do the Broncos navigate
- 14:28Speaker 3: that part of it.
- 14:30Speaker 5: Well, it's they can't break the rule and they did
- 14:33Speaker 5: a little bit against Lamar Jackson is it's one of
- 14:37Speaker 5: the oldest pass rushing adages ever. Don't go deeper than
- 14:41Speaker 5: the quarterback. And that's how you got to keep him
- 14:44Speaker 5: him dead. You know, you can't let him, you know,
- 14:49Speaker 5: get vertical and escape because you went too wide. If
- 14:54Speaker 5: you allow a quarterback who can run a vertical escape route,
- 14:58Speaker 5: that's a thirty yard gain almost every time. And then
- 15:02Speaker 5: you know, part of the issue against Baltimore is the
- 15:05Speaker 5: minute you play man coverage, which is what the Broncos
- 15:08Speaker 5: are really good at because they have the best corner
- 15:11Speaker 5: in football. The minute you play man coverage, you turn
- 15:15Speaker 5: your back to the quarterback and a quarterback who can
- 15:18Speaker 5: run will destroy that. And that was some of the
- 15:21Speaker 5: issue of Baltimore is they could not play the coverages
- 15:25Speaker 5: they wanted to because anytime they turned their back, Lamar
- 15:29Speaker 5: immediately made that a run as soon as he had
- 15:32Speaker 5: the ball in his hands.
- 15:34Speaker 3: Yeah. Jeff lakewalld ESPN dot com joins us every single Thursday.
- 15:37Speaker 3: Thank you, leg you. I appreciate it.
