- 0:02Happy Friday morning everybody from Arnold, MO, home of the big
- 0:08one. Alright, I know you see it.
- 0:11It's a sad day, October 3rd, and the legendary swimming pool is
- 0:17closed. But we still got the hot tub.
- 0:23All right. We we wear that hot tub out in
- 0:25the winter. Kim and I really like it.
- 0:28So the swimming pools closed. It's a sad day.
- 0:31That means we got to get ready for winter.
- 0:34The leaves fallen. OK, drinking coffee over on
- 0:43Facebook and I'll post it right here because I took a picture of
- 0:49it, A man said, Kenny Wallace, tell us about the days you drove
- 0:56the number 28 Texco Haviland Ford Thunderbird and respond
- 1:03right here. There's Louis the Legend, by the
- 1:05way. There he is.
- 1:09Respond right here. What day do you compare yourself
- 1:14to with the 28 Texco Haviland Ford Thunderbird?
- 1:17Was it Davy Allison? Was it Ernie Irvin?
- 1:23I drove it when Ernie Irvin got hurt and I'll tell you a couple
- 1:28stories about it. I know we got a lot of big Ford
- 1:30fans out there. I love Ford, I love Chevrolet.
- 1:35Hey, you know the one I forgot to tell you about here lately
- 1:38was I drove for Dodge too. Yes, when I drove for Bill
- 1:41Davis, yes, Only vehicle I've ever had.
- 1:46I had a Dodge Ram pickup truck and it literally blew a motor.
- 1:51The only vehicle that I've ever had were blew a motor in a
- 1:55passenger vehicle. Yeah, sure did.
- 1:59OK. And and Dave Jumper will
- 2:02remember that. Donnie's brother, Dave Jumper.
- 2:05Dave's got a repair shop and never forget that.
- 2:10Have you has your has your passenger vehicle ever blew a
- 2:13motor? Pretty rare, isn't it?
- 2:16OK, I'll never forget when Ernie got hurt.
- 2:21It was a very sad, tough day for everybody.
- 2:25I got a phone call from Robert Yates.
- 2:29Herman, do you want to drive the Texaco, you know, car?
- 2:35And I'm like, oh, my God, yeah. What?
- 2:37I mean, it was under tough circumstances.
- 2:40Somebody was going to drive it. It might as well been me.
- 2:46So I was honored and I had some what I call legendary runs in
- 2:52that car and I'm going to tell you about two of them.
- 2:57First one was Martinsville, and we all know Martinsville's My
- 3:00Jam. I've won two Xfinity races
- 3:03there. We have two grandfather clocks.
- 3:06Dong Ding Dong got a grandfather clock here at the house and one
- 3:12up in the up in the shop up in the party home up there.
- 3:17So Larry McReynolds says, Herman, let's go test.
- 3:20I said, all right. And they'd always they'd always
- 3:25run bad at Martinsville. So they knew I was good there.
- 3:30So they said, let's go test. Let's try to get this car
- 3:34running good here at at Martinsville.
- 3:37So I'm just going to clean it all up and tell you exactly what
- 3:40got that car going. Back in the day when Penske
- 3:45shocks came along, there was a lot of bleed.
- 3:47A lot of the fluid would go through the piston and then hit
- 3:51the Shim stack, so on so forth. Maybe I'm not explaining it
- 3:56right. Let me make something very
- 3:58clear. When I know, when I know about
- 4:02something really good, I know all about it.
- 4:04It's it's like it's like a motor.
- 4:06I cannot build a motor, but I can definitely change the valve
- 4:11springs, set the valve lash. I can maintain Tuna motor as
- 4:16good as anybody. I don't build motors.
- 4:19I don't put the Pistons in and the rods and all that.
- 4:22So when it comes to shocks, I don't build shocks.
- 4:25But I know about shocks. OK, So what we did, we'd go down
- 4:30the front straightaway at Martinsville and I'd go to get
- 4:33on the brakes and the front end would fall down way too easy and
- 4:36then it would get loose. No wonder Ernie and Davy never
- 4:43ran good there. But it but it was it was our
- 4:47test that got that Texaco for Haviland Thunderbird, which is a
- 4:52mouthful got that thing going. What we did is we, we back in
- 4:57those days, we, we plugged the shaft, we, we made the fluid go
- 5:02only through the Shim stack. In other words, we, we stiffen
- 5:07the front shocks up if you want to dumb it down.
- 5:09So when I went in the corner and I gave it break, the front end
- 5:12was slowly and it used to now when I get it on the brake
- 5:21transferred weight very slowly to the front.
- 5:23Then I could get in and turn left.
- 5:26So that was really good. That picks us up a lot.
- 5:28And then at the very end Larry says, OK, we need about 1/10,
- 5:32what do you need? And I said I need to rotate the
- 5:35middle better back in those days.
- 5:38Hey, you see the video out there, go to YouTube.
- 5:40Kenny Wallace spins Dale Earnhardt out Martinsville.
- 5:45So Earnhardt. I it's early in the race.
- 5:48Earnhardt's coming. I pull over.
- 5:50I let him go. Well, I don't pull over.
- 5:51I just let him go. But I let off the gas early and
- 5:56then I turned down and Earnhardt's all jammed up.
- 5:58He's not ready to go. I hit him and ass spin him out.
- 6:03I spin Dale Earnhardt out. The caution comes out, Earnhardt
- 6:07does a 360, Keep going. And everybody says, what did
- 6:10Earnhardt say to you when you spun him out?
- 6:13Earnhardt come up. He's laid low in that seat like
- 6:16this. Got that mustache, got the
- 6:17bubble goggles on, and he was my buddy.
- 6:20Dale Earnhardt was my friend. He come up to me.
- 6:23He looked over here and he said he knew.
- 6:29He knew I didn't mean to spit him out.
- 6:30He was like Herman, we went on, but we run 5th in that race and
- 6:37and as you all know, I've showed you pictures of the the rotor
- 6:42and the brake caliper. Everybody signed it, you know,
- 6:45Robert Yates, Doug Yates, Larry Mack.
- 6:48So anyway, what got that car going was we plugged the front
- 6:51shocks went to a 7-8 sway bar in the front, which is which is
- 6:57little. I hey, back in those days that's
- 7:00that was good that that was way better than this arrow nowadays.
- 7:03Back then we had mechanical grip.
- 7:05We didn't so much rely on air, but I got down that corner.
- 7:10Rotate that some bitch. I said, boys, we're ready.
- 7:13So we finished fifth, qualified I think 9th, but Larry Mack said
- 7:17that's the best we've ever qualified Herman at
- 7:20Martinsville. So what an honor to drive that
- 7:22Texaco Ford. I'll leave you with the next big
- 7:27one we go to. We go to Atlanta and at that
- 7:33time I'm driving a car and it's Goodyear versus Hoosier.
- 7:38Hoosier sits on the pole with Jeff Beaudine and I'm like, OK,
- 7:45so I go out to qualify and I'm on Goodyear tires.
- 7:49I like this son of a bitch. I, I drove that some.
- 7:52It's so hard. It was like, it's like, there's
- 7:54no way you can drive it this hard.
- 7:56Well, that, that car had massive power, but Robert Yates's
- 8:01motors, they never, they, they, you never felt the torque.
- 8:04In other words, they didn't go wait, wait.
- 8:07They just went like a diesel. So Robert Yates's motors back in
- 8:12those days just had massive girth.
- 8:17Girth, girth, that's what she said.
- 8:23So qualified second and Goodyear executives came to Larry
- 8:30Mccrells and said that's as fast as we could have ever expected
- 8:34our Goodyear tires to go see that.
- 8:38That's right, bitch. Herman Hader leg that mother
- 8:42out. All right, everybody, I hope you
- 8:44enjoyed those 20 in the race. I sucked.
- 8:47I was no good, but my best run in the Texaco car was fifth at
- 8:52Martinsville and there's a lot more stories, but we had 8
- 8:54minutes now, so hope you enjoyed it.
- 8:57Have a great Friday everybody and I'll see you trackside live
- 9:01this Sunday. Charlotte Motor Speedway, 11:00
- 9:05Special guest, handsome Harry. Harry Gant.
