- 0:00When Hashem your God brings you into the land that you are about to
- 0:04enter and possess, you shall pronounce the blessing
- 0:08at Mount Gerizim and the curse at Mount
- 0:11Ebal. In the book of Deuteronomy, we see a big
- 0:16contrast over and over between blessings
- 0:20from God for obedience and curses from
- 0:24God for disobedience.
- 0:27Where do you stand today? Do you stand at Mount Gerizim,
- 0:32the Mount of Blessing, because you're walking in obedience
- 0:35to the Lord by the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit,
- 0:39and you— because you love Him, you obey Him? Or are you
- 0:42standing at Mount Ebal,
- 0:46and the cursing of God is coming upon you because
- 0:49of the disobedience? Listen in as we unpack this and
- 0:53do a deep dive. Welcome to the Daily
- 0:57Audio Torah. Today is August 23rd. Now let's continue
- 1:02our journey reading through the entire Bible in one year.
- 1:06This week we are reading from the Israel Bible for the Old Testament and from
- 1:10the King James for the New Testament.
- 1:14Deuteronomy 11:26-12:10.
- 1:20See, this day I set before you blessing and curse.
- 1:25Blessing if you obey the commandments of Hashem your God that I
- 1:29enjoin upon you this day, and curse if you do not
- 1:33obey the commandments of Hashem your God, but turn away
- 1:37from the path that I enjoin upon you this day and follow other gods
- 1:40whom you have not experienced. When Hashem your God
- 1:44brings you into the land that you are about to enter and possess,
- 1:49you shall pronounce the blessing at Mount Gerizim and
- 1:53the curse at Mount Ebal. Both are
- 1:56on the other side of the Jordan beyond the west road that is in the
- 2:00land of the Canaanites who dwell in the Arabah near Gilgal
- 2:04by the terebinths of Moreh, where you are about to
- 2:07cross the Jordan to enter and possess the land that Hashem your God is assigning
- 2:11to you. When you have occupied it and are settled in it,
- 2:15take care to observe all the laws and rules that I
- 2:19have set before you this day. These are
- 2:23the laws and rules that you must carefully observe in the land that Hashem,
- 2:27God of your fathers, is giving you to possess. As long as
- 2:31you live on earth, you must destroy all the sites at
- 2:35which the nations you are to dispossess worshiped their gods,
- 2:39whether on lofty mountains and on hills or under any luxuriant
- 2:43tree. Tear down their altars,
- 2:46smash their pillars, put their sacred posts to the
- 2:50fire, and cut down the images of their gods,
- 2:54obliterating their name from that site. Do not
- 2:57worship Hashem your God in like manner, but look only to
- 3:01the site that Hashem your God will choose amidst all your tribes
- 3:05as His habitation, to establish His Name there.
- 3:09There you are to go, and there you
- 3:12are to bring your burnt offerings and other sacrifices,
- 3:16your tithes and contributions, your votive and freewill
- 3:19offerings, and the firstlings of your herds and flocks.
- 3:23Together with your households you shall feast there before Hashem your God,
- 3:27happy in all the undertakings in which Hashem your God has blessed
- 3:32you. You shall not act at all as we are now acting
- 3:36here, every man as he pleases, because you have
- 3:40not yet come to the allotted haven that Hashem your God
- 3:44is giving you. When you cross the Jordan and settle in the land that
- 3:48Hashem your God is allotting to you, and He grants you safety
- 3:51from all your enemies around you, and you live in security,
- 3:55then you must bring everything that I command you to the site where
- 3:59Hashem your God will choose to establish His name.
- 4:06Job 8:1-11,
- 4:1420. Bildad the Shuhite said in reply, How long will
- 4:18you speak such things? Your utterances are a mighty wind.
- 4:22Will Hashem pervert the right Will the
- 4:25Almighty pervert justice? If your sons sinned
- 4:29against Him, He dispatched them for their transgression. But if
- 4:33you seek Hashem and supplicate the Almighty, if you are blameless
- 4:37and upright, He will protect you and grant well-being to your righteous
- 4:42home. Though your beginning be small, in the end you will grow very
- 4:46great. Ask the generation past, study what their
- 4:50fathers have searched out. For we are of yesterday and know nothing;
- 4:54our days on earth are a shadow. Surely they will
- 4:57teach you and tell you, speaking out of their understanding.
- 5:01Can papyrus thrive without marsh? Can rushes
- 5:05grow without water? While still tender, not yet
- 5:09plucked, they would wither before any other grass. Such is the
- 5:13fate of all who forget Hashem; the hope of the impious man comes
- 5:17to naught. Whose confidence is a thread of gossamer,
- 5:21whose trust is a spider's web. He leans on his
- 5:24house; it will not stand. He seizes hold
- 5:29of it, but it will not hold. He stays fresh even in
- 5:33the sun; his shoots spring up in his garden.
- 5:37His roots are twined around a heap; they take hold
- 5:40of a house of stones. When he is uprooted from his place, it denies
- 5:44him, saying, I never saw you. Such is his
- 5:47happy lot, and from the earth others will grow.
- 5:52Surely Hashem does not despise the blameless; He
- 5:55gives no support to evildoers. He will yet fill your mouth
- 5:59with laughter and your lips with shouts of joy.
- 6:05Your enemies will be clothed in disgrace; the tent
- 6:09of the wicked will vanish. Job said in reply,
- 6:13Indeed, I know that it is so. Man cannot
- 6:16win a suit against Hashem. If he insisted on a trial
- 6:20with Him, He would not answer one charge in a thousand.
- 6:24Wise of heart and mighty in power, whoever challenged Him and
- 6:28came out whole? Him who moves mountains without
- 6:32their knowing it, who overturns them in His anger, who shakes
- 6:36the earth from its place till its pillars quake, who commands
- 6:40the sun not to shine, who seals up the stars, Who by
- 6:44himself spread out the heavens and tread on the
- 6:48back of the sea? Who made the Bear and Orion and
- 6:52Pleiades and the chambers of the south wind?
- 6:56Who performs great deeds which cannot
- 7:00be fathomed and wondrous things without number?
- 7:04He passes me by, I do not see him. He goes
- 7:07by me, but I do not perceive him. He snatches away, who can
- 7:11stop him? Who can say to Him, What are You doing?
- 7:15Hashem does not restrain His anger; under Him Rahab's helpers
- 7:19sink down. How then can I answer Him or choose my arguments against
- 7:24Him? Though I were in the right, I could not speak out, but I
- 7:27would plead for mercy with my Judge. If I summoned
- 7:30Him and He responded, I do not believe He would lend me His
- 7:34ear. For He crushes me for a hair, He wounds
- 7:38me So much for no cause.
- 7:42He does not let me catch my breath,
- 7:46but sates me with bitterness. If a trial of strength,
- 7:49he is the strong one. If a trial in court,
- 7:52who will summon him for me? Though I were innocent, my mouth
- 7:57would condemn me. Though I were blameless, he would prove me crooked.
- 8:00I am blameless, I am distraught. I am sick
- 8:04of life. It is all one; therefore I say, He destroys the blameless
- 8:08and the guilty. When suddenly a scourge brings death,
- 8:12He mocks as the innocent fail. The earth is handed
- 8:16over to the wicked one; He covers the eyes of its judges. If it
- 8:20is not He, then who? My days fly swifter than
- 8:24a runner; they flee without seeing happiness.
- 8:27They pass like reed boats, like an eagle swooping onto its prey.
- 8:32If I say, I will forget my complaint, abandon my sorrow,
- 8:36and be diverted, I remain in dread of all my suffering.
- 8:40I know that You will not acquit me; it will be I who am in
- 8:43the wrong. Why then should I waste effort? If I washed
- 8:48with soap, cleansed my hands with lye, You would dip me
- 8:52in muck till my clothes would abhor me. He is not
- 8:56a man like me that I can answer him; that we can go to law
- 8:59together. No arbiter is between us to
- 9:03lay his hand on us both. If he would only take his rod
- 9:07away from me and not let his terror frighten me,
- 9:10then I would speak out without fear of him, for I know myself not
- 9:14to be so. I am disgusted
- 9:18with life. I will give rein to my complaint, speak of the bitterness
- 9:22of my soul. I say to Hashem, Do not condemn me.
- 9:26Let me know what You charge me with. Does it benefit You to defraud,
- 9:30to despise the toil of Your hands while smiling on the counsel
- 9:34of the wicked? Do You have the eyes of flesh?
- 9:37Is Your vision that of mere men? Are Your days the days
- 9:41of a mortal? Are Your years the years of a man, that You would seek
- 9:46my iniquity and search out my sin? You know that I am not guilty.
- 9:50And that there is none to deliver from your hand.
- 9:54Your hands shaped and fashioned me, then destroyed every part
- 9:58of me. Consider that you fashioned me like clay; will
- 10:03you then turn me back into dust? You poured me out like milk,
- 10:07congealed me like cheese.
- 10:11You clothed me with skin and flesh and wove me of bones
- 10:15and sinews. You bestowed on me life and care; Your providence
- 10:19watched over my spirit. Yet these things You hide
- 10:23in Your heart. I know that You had this in mind: to
- 10:26watch me when I sinned, and not clear me of my iniquity.
- 10:30Should I be guilty, the worse for me, and even when innocent
- 10:35I cannot lift my head. So sated am I with shame and drenched
- 10:39in my misery. It is something to be proud of, to hunt me like a
- 10:43lion, to show Yourself wondrous through me, time and
- 10:46again. You keep sending fresh witnesses against
- 10:50me, letting your vexation with me grow. I serve my term,
- 10:55and I am my own replacement. Why did you let me come out
- 10:59of the womb? Better had I expired before any eye saw
- 11:03me. Had I been as though I never was, had I been carried
- 11:06from the womb to the grave. My days are few,
- 11:10so desist. Leave me alone. Let me be
- 11:14diverted awhile before I depart, never to return,
- 11:18for the land of deepest gloom, a land whose light is
- 11:22darkness, all gloom and disarray,
- 11:25whose light is like darkness. Then Zophar
- 11:30the Naamathite said in reply, Is a multitude of words unanswerable?
- 11:35Must a loquacious person be right? Your prattle may silence
- 11:39men, you may mock without being rebuked, and say, My doctrine is pure and
- 11:45I have been innocent in Your sight. But would that Hashem might speak
- 11:50and talk to you Himself! He would tell you the secrets of wisdom,
- 11:53for there are many sides to sagacity,
- 11:56and know that Hashem has overlooked for you some of your iniquity.
- 12:01Would you discover the mystery of Hashem? Would you discover
- 12:05the limit of the Almighty? Higher than heaven, what can you
- 12:09do? Deeper than Sheol, what can you know? Its measure
- 12:13is no longer than the earth and broader than the sea.
- 12:17Should he pass by or confine or call an assembly,
- 12:21who can stop him? For he knows deceitful men.
- 12:25When he sees iniquity, does he not discern it? A hollow
- 12:29man will get understanding when a wild donkey is born a
- 12:33man. But if you direct your mind and spread forth your hands toward him,
- 12:37if there is iniquity with you, remove it, and do not
- 12:41let injustice reside in your tent. Then,
- 12:45free of blemish, you will hold your head high, and when in straits,
- 12:49be unafraid. You will then put your misery out of
- 12:53mind, consider it as water that has flowed
- 12:57past. Your life will
- 13:00be brighter than noon, you will shine like
- 13:04the morning. You will be secure, for there is hope, and entrenched
- 13:09you will rest secure. You will lie down undisturbed.
- 13:13The great will court your favor. But the eyes of the wicked pine
- 13:17away. Escape is cut off from them.
- 13:20They have only their last breath to look forward to.
- 13:271 Corinthians 15:1-28.
- 13:33Now let me, Paul, remind you, dear brothers and sisters,
- 13:36of the good news I preached to you before. You welcomed it then and still
- 13:40do now, for your faith is built on this wonderful message.
- 13:44And it is this good news that saves you if you firmly
- 13:48believe it— unless, of course, you believed something that was
- 13:51never true in the first place. I passed on to you
- 13:55what was most important and what had also been passed on to me:
- 13:59that Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures
- 14:03said; He was buried, and He was raised from
- 14:06the dead on the 3rd day, as the Scriptures said. He was seen by
- 14:10Peter and then by the 12 apostles. After that, he was
- 14:14seen by more than 500 of his followers at one time,
- 14:18most of whom are still alive, though some have died
- 14:21by now. Then he was seen by James
- 14:24and later by all the apostles. Last of all, I saw
- 14:28him too, long after the others, as though I had been born
- 14:32at the wrong time. For I am the least of all the apostles,
- 14:36And I am not worthy to be called an apostle after the way I persecuted
- 14:41the church of God. But whatever I am now, it is all because God
- 14:45poured out his special favor on me, and not without
- 14:49results. For I have worked harder than all the other apostles,
- 14:54yet it was not I but God who was working through me by his
- 14:57grace. So it makes no difference whether
- 15:01I preach or they preach. The important thing is
- 15:05that you believed what we preached to you. But tell me
- 15:08this: since we preach that Christ rose
- 15:12from the dead, why are some of you saying there will be no
- 15:15resurrection of the dead? For if there is no resurrection of
- 15:19the dead, then Christ has not been raised either.
- 15:22And if Christ was not raised, then all our preaching is useless,
- 15:27and your trust in God is useless,
- 15:30and we apostles would all be lying about God. For we
- 15:34have said that God raised Christ from the grave. But that can't
- 15:38be true if there is no resurrection of the dead. If there
- 15:42is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised.
- 15:45And if Christ has not been raised, then your faith is useless
- 15:49and you are still under condemnation for your sins.
- 15:54In that case, all who have died believing in Christ have perished.
- 15:58And if we have hope in Christ only for this life, We are the most
- 16:02miserable people in the world. But the fact is
- 16:06that Christ has been raised from the dead. He has become the first
- 16:11of a great harvest of those who will be raised to life again.
- 16:14So you see, just as death came into the world through a man,
- 16:19Adam, now the resurrection from the dead has begun through
- 16:23another man, Christ. Everyone dies because all of us
- 16:27are related to Adam, the first man. But all who
- 16:30are related to Christ, the other man, will be given new life. Life.
- 16:34But there is an order to this resurrection.
- 16:37Christ was raised first. Then when Christ comes back,
- 16:41all his people will be raised.
- 16:48After that, that the end will come when
- 16:52he will turn the kingdom over to God the Father, having put down all
- 16:56enemies of every kind. For Christ must reign
- 16:59until he humbles all his enemies beneath
- 17:03his feet. And the last enemy to be destroyed is
- 17:08death. For the Scriptures say, God has given him authority
- 17:12over all things. Of course, when it says authority
- 17:15over all things, it does not include God himself, who gave
- 17:19Christ his authority. Then, when he has
- 17:22conquered all things, the Son will present himself to God,
- 17:26so that God, who gave his Son authority over all things,
- 17:29will be utterly supreme over everything everywhere.
- 17:37Psalm 38:1-22.
- 17:41O Lord, don't rebuke me in your anger.
- 17:44Don't discipline me in your rage. Your arrows have
- 17:47struck deep and your blows are crushing me. Because of your anger,
- 17:51my whole body is sick. My health is broken because
- 17:56of my sins. My guilt overwhelms me.
- 17:59It is a burden too heavy to bear. My wounds fester
- 18:03and stink because of my foolish sins. I am
- 18:06bent over and wracked with pain. My days are
- 18:09filled with grief. A raging fever burns within me
- 18:14and my health is broken. I am exhausted and completely crushed.
- 18:18My groans come from an anguished heart.
- 18:21You know what I long for, Lord. You hear my
- 18:25every sigh. My heart beats wildly, my strength fails,
- 18:29and I am going blind. My loved ones and friends stay
- 18:33away, fearing my disease. Even my own family stands at
- 18:38a distance. Meanwhile, my enemies lay traps for me.
- 18:42They make plans to ruin me. They think up treacherous deeds
- 18:46all day long. But I am deaf to all their threats.
- 18:49I am silent before them as one who cannot speak. I choose
- 18:54to hear nothing, and I make no reply.
- 18:57For I am waiting for You, O Lord. You must answer for me,
- 19:00O Lord my God. I prayed, Don't let my enemies
- 19:04gloat over me or rejoice at my downfall.
- 19:08I am on the verge of collapse, facing constant pain.
- 19:12But I confess my sins. I am deeply sorry
- 19:15for what I have done. My enemies are many. They hate me though
- 19:19I have done nothing against them. They repay me
- 19:22evil for good. And oppose me because I stand for
- 19:26the right. Do not abandon me, Lord; do
- 19:30not stand at a distance, O God. Come quickly to help me,
- 19:33O Lord my Savior.
- 19:39Proverbs 21:28-29. A false
- 19:43witness will be cut off, but an attentive witness will be allowed to speak.
- 19:48The wicked put up a bold front, but the upright proceed
- 19:52with care.
- 19:57I want to speak to you today from our reading from Deuteronomy chapter
- 20:0111, and I want to do a deep dive on verse 29
- 20:08where it is written: When Hashem your God brings you into the
- 20:11land that you are about to enter and possess, you shall pronounce the blessing
- 20:15at Mount Gerizim and the curse at Mount Ebal.
- 20:20Both are on the other side of the Jordan beyond the west road
- 20:23that is in the land of the Canaanites who dwell in the Arabah near Gilgal
- 20:28by the Terebinths of Moreh. So there's
- 20:32a theme going on here: blessings for obedience
- 20:36and curses for disobedience. And Moses
- 20:40is making this comparison and this contrast over and over
- 20:45again. And it's literally engraved in
- 20:48the very landscape and geography of where they're
- 20:52going to go. So down in
- 20:56the valley between these 2 mountains is a town
- 21:00called ancient Shechem. And Shechem is where Joseph's
- 21:04bones are buried. They're in a tomb. And remember,
- 21:08when he died, he was in Egypt, but his last wishes that he told to
- 21:12his sons were, don't leave my bones in Egypt. When you leave Egypt,
- 21:15take my bones and put them in the land, and they are in Shechem.
- 21:20Now these mountains, these 2 mountains, Mount Ebal and
- 21:24Mount Gerizim, the Mount of Blessing, Mount Gerizim, and the Mount
- 21:28of Cursing, Mount Ebal, they're not huge mountains. They're just like very large
- 21:32hills, and in the valley between them is the town of Shechem.
- 21:37And so what he had them do was 6 tribes
- 21:40went up to the top of Mount Gerizim, and they spoke the the
- 21:44blessings that God would do for their obedience,
- 21:48and then the other 6 tribal leaders went to the top of Mount Ebal
- 21:52and they spoke the curses that God would do for
- 21:56their rebellion and disobedience. So in Deuteronomy
- 22:00chapter 29, these blessings
- 22:04and curses are unpacked in great detail.
- 22:07I'll share a little bit of that with you in Deuteronomy chapter
- 22:1129 Starting in verse 1, these are the words of the covenant which
- 22:15the Lord commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the
- 22:19land of Moab before they've crossed the River Jordan and gone into the land.
- 22:23They're renewing their covenant in Moab besides the covenant
- 22:28which he made with them in Horeb. Moses calls
- 22:32all the people together and he says to them, you have
- 22:35seen all that the Lord did before your eyes in the land of Egypt to
- 22:39Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land. The great trials
- 22:43which your eyes have seen, the signs and those great wonders.
- 22:47Yet the Lord has not given you a heart to perceive and
- 22:51eyes to see and ears to hear to this very day.
- 22:55In other words, they are spiritually blind,
- 22:58spiritually deaf, and their heart is not—
- 23:04it's like a heart of stone. And it goes on to say in
- 23:07verse 5, and I have led you 40 years in the wilderness. Your clothes have
- 23:11not worn out. Your sandals have not worn out.
- 23:14You have not eaten bread. You have drunk wine or
- 23:18similar drink, that you may know that I am the Lord your God.
- 23:22So he goes on to say in verse 9, therefore keep the words
- 23:26of this covenant and do them, that you may prosper
- 23:30in all that you do. And it goes on
- 23:34to say, all of you stand today before the Lord your God, your leaders,
- 23:38and your tribes and your elders and your officers, all the men of Israel,
- 23:42your little ones and your wives, also the stranger
- 23:45who is in your camp, from the one who cuts your wood to the
- 23:49one who draws your water. And goes on to say in
- 23:52verse 14, I make this covenant and this oath not with you alone,
- 23:57but with him who stands here with us today before the Lord our God,
- 24:00as well as him who is not here with
- 24:04us today. That includes you and me. We are
- 24:08included in this covenant. We were not there
- 24:11on that day when these words were spoken by Moses to
- 24:15the children of Israel, but that verse that I just shared
- 24:19is saying that those who were not there are included
- 24:22in this covenant. And it goes on to talk about
- 24:27all the different blessings that they would receive Um,
- 24:31and then also the curses, the curses that
- 24:36would happen to them. And then in chapter 30, again, the comparison
- 24:40and the contrast. Chapter 30 of Deuteronomy says, now it shall come to pass
- 24:44when all these things come upon you, the blessing and
- 24:49the curse which I've set before you, and you call them to
- 24:53mind among all the nations where the Lord your God drives
- 24:56you, In other words, you've been scattered.
- 25:01And you return to the Lord your God and obey his voice
- 25:05according to all that I command you today, you and your
- 25:10children, with all your heart and all your soul,
- 25:13the Lord your God will bring you back from captivity and
- 25:17have compassion on you and gather you again from
- 25:21all the nations where the Lord your God has scattered you.
- 25:24That's a promise He makes back in Deuteronomy chapter 30,
- 25:29and that's exactly what God has done. Up until
- 25:33May of 1948, the Jewish people were scattered to all the
- 25:37nations of the earth, and for hundreds and hundreds of years,
- 25:41actually a couple of thousand years, they were no longer a nation.
- 25:45And yet somehow their culture,
- 25:49their language, was preserved. They kept
- 25:53the Torah, they followed the Torah, they read the Torah reading cycle,
- 25:57and somehow their identity as a people and their culture
- 26:01was preserved. And in May of 1948, the miracle happened,
- 26:05and the nation of Israel was reborn. And something
- 26:09like 8 million Jews now live in Israel.
- 26:13He has regathered them, ingathered them.
- 26:18So how does this apply to us today? There's a blessing
- 26:22for obedience, and there's curses and consequences for disobedience
- 26:27and for rebellion. And so we
- 26:32obey because we love Him.
- 26:35We don't do it out of duty or obligation. We're certainly not able
- 26:40to be obedient to the commands and the decrees and
- 26:44the laws of God's covenant in our own
- 26:48self and our own flesh and our own efforts, we will fall and
- 26:52we will fail every time. But when we are filled with the Holy
- 26:55Spirit, when we have been born again, and we— because we love Him,
- 26:59we obey Him, that is Jesus— then
- 27:03there are blessings for our obedience to Him,
- 27:07and there are curses that people come under when there's
- 27:11disobedience. So the question is
- 27:14for us today is, where are we standing?
- 27:17Are we standing at Mount Gerizim, the Mount of Blessing,
- 27:21or are we standing at Mount Ebal,
- 27:24the Mount of Cursing? Where do you stand today?
- 27:29May you be under God's blessing and His
- 27:33favor because you love Him, And you obey
- 27:37him. Have a great day, and we'll see you tomorrow.
- 27:40Shalom.
