- 0:42Speaker 1: we need to talk about what transpired Thursday night. Yeah,
- 0:46Speaker 1: it wasn't good. Half the starting lineup was just missing
- 0:48Speaker 1: from practice. Yeah, just like an optional day or something
- 0:51Speaker 1: on their part. Just quit. So John is Quinn still
- 0:54Speaker 1: GM there? Who's the GM in Titans? John Robinson was
- 0:59Speaker 1: like honest, like honestly, like sometimes I like, are you
- 1:04Speaker 1: having the flue about any repercussions on the cloak that
- 1:08Speaker 1: Bill was wearing for those for those of us, he
- 1:12Speaker 1: has no time for you. Come on, let's get to
- 1:15Speaker 1: the over routes. Um. So he does it again. Um,
- 1:18Speaker 1: and that makes Patriots fans even more miserable. Will you
- 1:22Speaker 1: yearn for the days of your then have Max. He
- 1:25Speaker 1: wants to be coach harder, rights, harder, harder. That's wrong.
- 1:33Speaker 1: I want to be coached harder. This is Patriots Unfiltered,
- 1:37Speaker 1: fueled by Duncan. All right, welcome to Patriots Unfiltered. It's
- 1:43Speaker 1: Wednesday here at Gillette Stadium. And uh, what a lively
- 1:47Speaker 1: show yesterday. I was just that we were talking about
- 1:49Speaker 1: it before. But just a great job, Matt. I mean,
- 1:51Speaker 1: it captured so much of the spirit. It was a
- 1:53Speaker 1: good show. You're working blue as usually, you know, not
- 1:55Speaker 1: like we had to pat ourselves in the back. But
- 1:57Speaker 1: I thought it was a really good, lively conversation about
- 2:00Speaker 1: the current state of affairs with the Patriots. And I
- 2:03Speaker 1: think we looked at it from all different angles as
- 2:06Speaker 1: objectively as both sides. Yeah, we don't just like, you know,
- 2:09Speaker 1: hammer away at everything and we don't just tell you
- 2:11Speaker 1: everything is great. Yeah, we just of course give the
- 2:13Speaker 1: past to Bill Belichick, of course, as the caller called
- 2:15Speaker 1: in yesterday. And I didn't care because I feel like
- 2:18Speaker 1: that sort of means that we're doing our job. Like
- 2:20Speaker 1: if people are kind of you know, attacking us, are
- 2:23Speaker 1: being too negative, and sometimes attacking us are being too.
- 2:27Speaker 1: You know, people behind people hear what they want to hear.
- 2:30Speaker 1: But I think that means that we're probably offering some
- 2:33Speaker 1: balance to the show. And you know, it's not an
- 2:36Speaker 1: easy thing to do when there's so many issues, Like
- 2:41Speaker 1: it'd be so like I keep saying this about the offense,
- 2:43Speaker 1: it'd be so easy if you just said, you know,
- 2:45Speaker 1: the receivers are doing great, the running game is awesome,
- 2:48Speaker 1: the past protection is great. Quarterback just can't get him
- 2:50Speaker 1: in the ball. Just gotta do something about the quarterback.
- 2:52Speaker 1: That's easy, well, not easy, but you know what I mean,
- 2:55Speaker 1: it's easy to identify. Yeah. Well it's funny now too,
- 2:57Speaker 1: because every I feel like every day you get someone
- 2:59Speaker 1: new chimes in with an article. So I know Karen
- 3:03Speaker 1: talked to SCARNECKI. Uh, you've got Charlie Weiss weighing in.
- 3:07Speaker 1: I mean, everybody's got their own thing, like Charlie Weiss
- 3:10Speaker 1: is it's the weapons, Scarnecki is. You don't say this.
- 3:12Speaker 1: I mean, you know, everybody's got an opinion, Dan Orlovsky,
- 3:15Speaker 1: you know, it's just each new person kind of brings
- 3:18Speaker 1: a new angle to it. And so it's there's just
- 3:20Speaker 1: so much to digest and dissect and at the end
- 3:23Speaker 1: of the day, it's, uh, it's tough to pinpoint one thing.
- 3:26Speaker 1: It's a lot of things, right, Yeah, I mean we
- 3:29Speaker 1: were talking before the show, and you know, I was
- 3:31Speaker 1: thinking about our conversation afterwards, and I told you guys
- 3:35Speaker 1: before the show, like, you know, what if? What if?
- 3:39Speaker 1: The plan all along for Bill was to bring in
- 3:41Speaker 1: Bill O'Brien, and Nick Saban said, hey, can you just wait.
- 3:45Speaker 1: He's got one more year left. Can you wait on that?
- 3:48Speaker 1: And so Bill had to go back to the drawing
- 3:50Speaker 1: board and rather than bring in somebody else, thinking I'm
- 3:54Speaker 1: gonna have Bill next O'Brien next year, he elevates or
- 3:58Speaker 1: he puts Patricia over there as sort of a placeholder.
- 4:01Speaker 1: I trust the guy. You know, he's smart. It's not
- 4:04Speaker 1: going to be a complete disaster. He'll he'll be a
- 4:07Speaker 1: placeholder until next year when we get um, you know,
- 4:12Speaker 1: Bill O'Brien. Bill O'Brien will also be the quarterbacks coach.
- 4:16Speaker 1: I'll make Judge. I'll bring Judge back over to special
- 4:19Speaker 1: teams to be the coordinator and make that better. I
- 4:22Speaker 1: like I like your theory, I like you, I like
- 4:24Speaker 1: your and and so now in twenty twenty three, all
- 4:26Speaker 1: of a sudden, your coaching staff becomes this kind of
- 4:30Speaker 1: mess that people think it is right now to actually
- 4:32Speaker 1: his strength. I guess my question to that might be,
- 4:36Speaker 1: are they setting a foundation for the Bill O'Brien offense
- 4:38Speaker 1: or is Matt Patricia and Bill Beli O'Brien's going to
- 4:43Speaker 1: come in. That's the flaw in my thinking, your pook.
- 4:47Speaker 1: So that's the flaw in my thinking. So if if
- 4:49Speaker 1: Patricia is in fact a placeholder and you're gonna bring
- 4:52Speaker 1: in a Brian in twenty twenty three, why then change
- 4:55Speaker 1: the offense? Well, you could just have Bill O'Brien come
- 4:58Speaker 1: in with Mac Jones and just say we're going Alabama. Yeah,
- 5:03Speaker 1: you know, well, Joe Phill O'Brien, the offense, Bill O'Brian
- 5:07Speaker 1: no longer needs any teaching after two years and running it,
- 5:11Speaker 1: and so we go. So so the conversation in my
- 5:14Speaker 1: head continued along these lines, and then I'm thinking, Okay,
- 5:18Speaker 1: could the changes that they were trying to make in
- 5:20Speaker 1: this spring be a foundation for more Alabama RPO? And
- 5:25Speaker 1: so the question I would have for you do Sir
- 5:27Speaker 1: Evan when he gets here is you know, do you
- 5:29Speaker 1: need to incorporate zone stretch kind of running if you're
- 5:33Speaker 1: going to run RPO, because you got to get people
- 5:35Speaker 1: on the move, you know, and so like, you know,
- 5:39Speaker 1: did they want to kind of establish that type of
- 5:42Speaker 1: offensive line movement in anticipation of more RPO. I mean,
- 5:45Speaker 1: we can consult our residents. Yeah, you and I are qualified,
- 5:48Speaker 1: but I would say I don't. I don't think so.
- 5:50Speaker 1: I mean, I think that they can exist, you know,
- 5:52Speaker 1: independently of those is not necessarily tied to those, to
- 5:55Speaker 1: those things that. But one other point that you're flirting
- 5:57Speaker 1: with here, and I think it's a bigger point that
- 5:59Speaker 1: we haven't really talked about much as just you know,
- 6:01Speaker 1: Bill Belichick seventy years old, and you know, I think
- 6:03Speaker 1: we all agree he's not in the position to be
- 6:04Speaker 1: burning seasons at this point. And I don't ever expect
- 6:08Speaker 1: him to completely flip his you know, general philosophy of
- 6:11Speaker 1: the last twenty years and go all in and just
- 6:14Speaker 1: totally take a blowtorch to the whole organization after he leaves,
- 6:17Speaker 1: but cash in and just try to get that, you know,
- 6:19Speaker 1: another super Bowl because he's got to answer Brady or
- 6:21Speaker 1: you know that kind of stuff. And I just don't
- 6:24Speaker 1: know what the balance is because one hand, I don't
- 6:27Speaker 1: I don't want him to blow the franchise up, But
- 6:28Speaker 1: I also think like the clock is ticking, buddy, Like
- 6:31Speaker 1: you know, you don't have it a year or to
- 6:33Speaker 1: just like, well, we'll just kind of mess around this
- 6:35Speaker 1: year and see what happens, and then next year we'll get, um,
- 6:38Speaker 1: you know, the guys that we actually want to run
- 6:40Speaker 1: the offense. So you know, that's just what I wonder
- 6:42Speaker 1: with him at this point in his career. What does
- 6:43Speaker 1: he want to be doing. Does he want to you know,
- 6:45Speaker 1: just stick to his guns absolutely and do everything that
- 6:48Speaker 1: we talked about yesterday in terms of team building and
- 6:50Speaker 1: all that, you know, or does you know or is
- 6:53Speaker 1: there some element of, hey, I gotta I don't have
- 6:56Speaker 1: much time to have like if I want to win
- 6:58Speaker 1: games and have fun with this and you know, be
- 7:00Speaker 1: part of a winning organization again, I gotta make some
- 7:02Speaker 1: moves that maybe might have been outside of you know,
- 7:05Speaker 1: what WEEK might have come to expect over the last
- 7:06Speaker 1: twenty years and what I'm saying, Like, so the premise
- 7:09Speaker 1: there is that breaking that record is dictating decisions. And
- 7:17Speaker 1: I know, I know a lot of people will disagree
- 7:21Speaker 1: with this, but I honestly don't think that Bill like,
- 7:24Speaker 1: I think he cares about the record. I'm not saying
- 7:26Speaker 1: he doesn't care about the record, like if it happens,
- 7:28Speaker 1: he'll be really it'll be really cool and and all
- 7:32Speaker 1: that stuff. But I do believe him when I think
- 7:35Speaker 1: when he says, you know, there's a balance between what
- 7:38Speaker 1: is good this year and also planning for the future.
- 7:41Speaker 1: I don't think that's changed, you know, I don't think
- 7:44Speaker 1: that now it's all in for every season because I
- 7:46Speaker 1: gotta break that record. I don't see that. I know
- 7:49Speaker 1: there's gray area between it and I mean, you gotta
- 7:51Speaker 1: win games, like that's the bottom line. You gotta win games.
- 7:53Speaker 1: You want to break that record, win games you want
- 7:54Speaker 1: to win, you know, get the playoffs and be relevant.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Win games. One of those things I have a hard
- 7:58Speaker 1: time understanding. And I don't hear. I think Robert Kraft
- 8:01Speaker 1: might be more pressure to win now than the record, right,
- 8:03Speaker 1: I don't have a I don't hear a lot of
- 8:05Speaker 1: people criticize sort of the pursuit of the record, because
- 8:08Speaker 1: the pursuit of the record is what Mike just said.
- 8:11Speaker 1: In order to do it, you have to win games,
- 8:12Speaker 1: and that's what everybody ultimately wants, right, So it's not
- 8:15Speaker 1: like you, well, he's being selfish, he wants the record. Yeah,
- 8:18Speaker 1: I think there's probably part of him that says, yeah,
- 8:20Speaker 1: I do want that record. It doesn't mean a lot,
- 8:23Speaker 1: but I want to win games, right, So I think
- 8:26Speaker 1: it's you know, I think it could be considered a
- 8:29Speaker 1: selfish pursuit, but ultimately it's doing what you want as
- 8:33Speaker 1: a fan, as a as a coach, as an owner,
- 8:35Speaker 1: as a player. You want to win games. You don't
- 8:37Speaker 1: want to go, you know, a tear down rebuild if
- 8:41Speaker 1: you're if you're part of the organization of any organization,
- 8:44Speaker 1: like I'm just going to half ask my way through
- 8:45Speaker 1: the next six years of five win games. We could
- 8:49Speaker 1: have and it's not important for this discussion. We could have,
- 8:51Speaker 1: you know, a week's worth of shows on whether or
- 8:54Speaker 1: not you go all in, and that's not the right
- 8:56Speaker 1: thing for a team, Like, that's not what this is about.
- 9:00Speaker 1: I think it's you know a lot of teams have
- 9:01Speaker 1: gone all in and had success with it. It doesn't
- 9:03Speaker 1: mean you have to stink and be a dumpster fire
- 9:06Speaker 1: there you know, thereafter and and there's so many layers
- 9:10Speaker 1: to this, and one of them is his kids, you know, like, okay,
- 9:14Speaker 1: so my two sons are coaches on my team. I'm
- 9:18Speaker 1: you know, I'm not going to be around forever. You know,
- 9:20Speaker 1: I can see the end. I'm on the eighteenth hole here,
- 9:23Speaker 1: but my kids aren't. They hopefully have a long future
- 9:27Speaker 1: in the NFL. I would love to set them up
- 9:30Speaker 1: as part of a winning organization, having been part of,
- 9:34Speaker 1: you know, a super Bowl or at least a you know,
- 9:36Speaker 1: a perennial playoff team, because nothing helps a coach get
- 9:40Speaker 1: another job than being part of a winning program. You know,
- 9:46Speaker 1: Like he's a human being and a father. How can
- 9:48Speaker 1: you not think of your kid's future. And nothing's better
- 9:51Speaker 1: for his kid's future than to be part of a
- 9:53Speaker 1: winning team in the NFL. You know, that's a great
- 9:56Speaker 1: That's a great other layer too to the whole thing
- 9:59Speaker 1: of I mean, I guess it just boils down to
- 10:01Speaker 1: winning solves everything. You know, every all these problems. You
- 10:04Speaker 1: win games, it's not gonna be, it's not gonna be
- 10:06Speaker 1: continue to be as tough as it's been, you know.
- 10:09Speaker 1: So then we get back to the whole Patricia thing,
- 10:11Speaker 1: which everybody that's the narrative this week, you know it
- 10:15Speaker 1: seemed apparent to everybody except me, because I said, you know,
- 10:18Speaker 1: if you're ahead, if you if you rose to the
- 10:20Speaker 1: level of a head coach of this league, it says something,
- 10:23Speaker 1: you know, And I thought it would be okay with
- 10:25Speaker 1: Judge and Patricia. I'd love to make fun of you,
- 10:27Speaker 1: but yeah, I can't. But so far I've been wrong.
- 10:30Speaker 1: You know, I can admit it, but far, but games
- 10:34Speaker 1: like like if he stuck with him, maybe Patricia would
- 10:36Speaker 1: improve it. Maybe next year he'd be better. I don't know,
- 10:39Speaker 1: but let's just say that I am wrong and it
- 10:42Speaker 1: hasn't worked out, and it's not going to work out.
- 10:45Speaker 1: It seems like everybody except me saw this coming. They
- 10:48Speaker 1: saw this train coming down the track except for Bill, right,
- 10:51Speaker 1: And there's no way that everybody is smarter about football
- 10:55Speaker 1: than Bill. So he knew. He had to have known
- 10:58Speaker 1: it was a risk. And if it was, just like
- 11:01Speaker 1: I said at the beginning, just a placeholder for Patricia,
- 11:04Speaker 1: to me, it makes a little bit more sense. Yeah,
- 11:06Speaker 1: so this is where I was. You know, we kind
- 11:08Speaker 1: of talked about this a little bit yesterday. We never
- 11:10Speaker 1: really delved deeply into it. But I do feel like
- 11:17Speaker 1: where Bill maybe misread it, is I feel like Bill
- 11:21Speaker 1: felt when he set it up this way, that you're theory,
- 11:25Speaker 1: like Matt Patrici is a good football coach, he can
- 11:27Speaker 1: figure this out now. I think there are some intricacies
- 11:30Speaker 1: that he sort of overlooked to the art of play
- 11:33Speaker 1: calling without the experience of having ever done it and
- 11:35Speaker 1: things like that, But that's less important to me. I
- 11:38Speaker 1: think what he overlooked was we were all, as you said,
- 11:42Speaker 1: we were all like, this isn't gonna work right. It was.
- 11:46Speaker 1: It was March, it was April, May, it was June,
- 11:48Speaker 1: and that was the topic of conversation everywhere. It was
- 11:51Speaker 1: my station EEI you know here, that's all we all
- 11:56Speaker 1: talked about. But what Bill I think overlooked is he
- 11:59Speaker 1: doesn't care what we're talking about. But I think Bill
- 12:02Speaker 1: overlook the fact that that's where his players were talking.
- 12:05Speaker 1: And I don't think that they bought in. Yeah, I
- 12:08Speaker 1: don't think they bought in from the start. It started
- 12:10Speaker 1: with Mac And this is where I, you know, people
- 12:13Speaker 1: you know, sort of give me a little blowback because
- 12:17Speaker 1: I haven't been a huge Max supporter, and I haven't
- 12:19Speaker 1: been from the side. I feel like he's out. I
- 12:21Speaker 1: don't think he's a stiff. I've said that a million times.
- 12:23Speaker 1: I don't. I think there are guys that that are
- 12:25Speaker 1: worse than him. I think he's he's average. But where
- 12:30Speaker 1: I give him a lot of the blame for this
- 12:33Speaker 1: that I don't really see any blame being assigned to
- 12:36Speaker 1: him really is. I think that as the leader of
- 12:40Speaker 1: the offense, if you don't embrace it, the other guys
- 12:43Speaker 1: aren't going to follow, right, So when people say so,
- 12:46Speaker 1: are people lying or were people exaggerating when they say that,
- 12:49Speaker 1: they look no, the opposite. I think the Jacoby Myers
- 12:52Speaker 1: and the Kendrick Bowens of the world and the Hunter
- 12:54Speaker 1: Henry's of the world, they do like Mac yeah, and
- 12:57Speaker 1: they do feel like it started back in this bring.
- 13:00Speaker 1: They saddled him with defensive coaches and they didn't support him,
- 13:03Speaker 1: and it just got worse as things unfolded during the season,
- 13:06Speaker 1: culminating on the Monday night game when you get you know,
- 13:09Speaker 1: like they're calling for Zappi and they're bullying him. That's
- 13:12Speaker 1: that's where he even played. That's a good point. These
- 13:14Speaker 1: guys are grown men in the locker room who have
- 13:16Speaker 1: achieved a lot in their career, in the college careers
- 13:19Speaker 1: and even if they're young, and if you don't, if
- 13:22Speaker 1: they sense that you don't know what you're talking about,
- 13:26Speaker 1: oh yeah, they tune you out. Yep. And I go
- 13:30Speaker 1: back to the Jason mccordy comment. I know, I say
- 13:33Speaker 1: this story a lot. Forgive me for repeating myself, but
- 13:36Speaker 1: that Jason mccordy comment on NFL network, you know, with
- 13:39Speaker 1: his new role on that Good Morning Football show. And
- 13:43Speaker 1: I think it was around July or so, I don't
- 13:46Speaker 1: have the the time frame exact, but he said that
- 13:50Speaker 1: if this was in my lock if this was me,
- 13:53Speaker 1: if I was in that locker room, I'd be wondering
- 13:55Speaker 1: what we're doing. You know, I'm paraphrase. His twin is
- 13:57Speaker 1: literally in the lock and his twin brother is in
- 14:00Speaker 1: the locker room. I said to you guys at that time,
- 14:02Speaker 1: that's that's might as well be Devin saying it. This
- 14:05Speaker 1: is there's uncertainty going on. We heard things about Macket,
- 14:09Speaker 1: some of the charity things that he appeared at in
- 14:11Speaker 1: the summer that you know, he let it be known
- 14:13Speaker 1: that he was a little confused as to what the
- 14:15Speaker 1: direction of the offense was going to be, you know,
- 14:18Speaker 1: with what they were doing. I'm not telling you they're wrong.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Like I don't think mac Jones was wrong to take
- 14:24Speaker 1: a step back, you know, heading into a second season
- 14:26Speaker 1: and say, what are we doing putting a defensive coordinator
- 14:29Speaker 1: in charge? But it's one thing to question, it's another
- 14:32Speaker 1: thing to completely ignore. And I feel like they just
- 14:35Speaker 1: never gave it a chance. Yeah, they never gave it
- 14:38Speaker 1: a chance. Yeah. So it's it's interesting stuff. Now. One
- 14:42Speaker 1: of your guys, Deuce, was on the radio this morning,
- 14:45Speaker 1: Mark Daniels, and he was talking about this very subject
- 14:50Speaker 1: and he, you know, he was saying that, you know,
- 14:52Speaker 1: ever since he's covered the team, he's never seen as
- 14:54Speaker 1: many guys, both on and off the record, be complaining
- 14:59Speaker 1: about I think that's a great point that Mark makes
- 15:02Speaker 1: because but I can never remember it. But then you know,
- 15:06Speaker 1: he he you know, talked about what they're saying, and
- 15:10Speaker 1: all the stuff that he talked about were stuff that
- 15:12Speaker 1: we knew, stuff that has been on the record. He
- 15:15Speaker 1: didn't talk about stuff off the record yet. And I
- 15:18Speaker 1: really hope that like when this stuff does come out,
- 15:22Speaker 1: like people like Mark days, you know, as I knew,
- 15:25Speaker 1: like if you know it, like you don't have to
- 15:26Speaker 1: say who said it. Yeah, But like tricky Capital j journalism.
- 15:33Speaker 1: You mean to kind of navigate the water. Yeah, it's
- 15:36Speaker 1: also a weird element this year were being back in
- 15:37Speaker 1: the locker room. He didn't really get this stuff. The
- 15:39Speaker 1: last couple of years he didn't get well. He mentioned that, Yeah,
- 15:41Speaker 1: we didn't we didn't have the locker room to say
- 15:43Speaker 1: that they would have been happy there. Um. One thing
- 15:46Speaker 1: I was thinking though of while you're talking, and I know, Bill,
- 15:49Speaker 1: this week too late make wholesale changes. Um, but we've
- 15:53Speaker 1: been kind of seeing the same thing for multiple months, right, Like,
- 15:56Speaker 1: do you think that Max's injury kind of bought them
- 15:59Speaker 1: more time? I'm to stick with what wasn't working instead
- 16:02Speaker 1: of you know, had Mac been healthy through the all
- 16:05Speaker 1: of September into October and it continued to well here's
- 16:08Speaker 1: what I'll push back there. I think the opposite. Yeah, ahead, Freddie,
- 16:11Speaker 1: when he got hurt, they didn't do they didn't keep
- 16:14Speaker 1: doing it. They changed it. And then when he came back.
- 16:18Speaker 1: So this is great. I have some stuff. I have
- 16:19Speaker 1: something I brought. I brought some you got highlights and everything.
- 16:23Speaker 1: I brought some prep work. So one of the things
- 16:25Speaker 1: that I thought was really interesting. Yesterday we touched on it.
- 16:28Speaker 1: We didn't really again, didn't get into it too deep.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Was the Phil Perry exchange with Bill Belichick toward the
- 16:33Speaker 1: end of the press conference. It was, you know, Phil
- 16:36Speaker 1: asked him about the comments that he made on Monday
- 16:41Speaker 1: on w EI when he was asked, point blank, you know,
- 16:46Speaker 1: can change just be made to the offense, you know,
- 16:48Speaker 1: more or less? And he said that this at this point,
- 16:52Speaker 1: you know, he used phrases like at this point, it's
- 16:54Speaker 1: too late, like you know, things like that, and and
- 16:56Speaker 1: the basis of it was that he he well Von
- 17:01Speaker 1: Miller off for the year after undergoing ACL surgery, so
- 17:05Speaker 1: he went from missing one game to the rest of
- 17:06Speaker 1: the season. Um. He talked about it basically being, uh,
- 17:13Speaker 1: you know, thirteen games into the thirteen weeks into the season,
- 17:16Speaker 1: you can't just sort of you know, And and he
- 17:19Speaker 1: was asked and Phil asked him some follow ups yesterday,
- 17:21Speaker 1: and I thought there was one, uh, one one toward
- 17:24Speaker 1: the end where he talked very specifically about UM trying
- 17:30Speaker 1: to find the exact one. Okay. They went back and
- 17:35Speaker 1: forth a little bit and and Phil got to the
- 17:38Speaker 1: point where he was like, okay, so what is this
- 17:41Speaker 1: He asked, you know, in twenty and eighteen. They sort
- 17:44Speaker 1: of changed the offense towards the end of the year,
- 17:47Speaker 1: accentuating the things that they did, leaning into the strength right,
- 17:51Speaker 1: and he said, well, we do that all the time.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Bill said, you know, okay, so how would you consider this,
- 17:55Speaker 1: like what would you have to do? And he and
- 17:57Speaker 1: he talked about you know, Bill says, so whether that's
- 18:00Speaker 1: going conservative, not conservative, the same, different, whatever it is,
- 18:04Speaker 1: that's what the intent of it all is. That's what
- 18:06Speaker 1: it always is. So that's not going to change what
- 18:09Speaker 1: they'll be, I don't know changes. What they'll be is
- 18:13Speaker 1: the changes, but it's a combination of what they do,
- 18:15Speaker 1: what we do, what we think we can do well.
- 18:17Speaker 1: Any idea that any idea can be a bad idea
- 18:21Speaker 1: if you can't execute it. So if you can execute it,
- 18:24Speaker 1: then it's potentially a good idea. If you can't do it,
- 18:27Speaker 1: then it's not going to work. If your team physically
- 18:30Speaker 1: can't do whatever it is you're trying to do for
- 18:33Speaker 1: whatever reason, then it's probably not a good idea. Find
- 18:36Speaker 1: something that you think you can do and that's a
- 18:38Speaker 1: good way to attack your opponent, then probably it's going
- 18:40Speaker 1: to be worth talking about. I thought this was really
- 18:43Speaker 1: interesting and it was toward the end of several different questions.
- 18:47Speaker 1: It was like it was a fourth question back and
- 18:50Speaker 1: forth with Phil. And it was not confrontational at all.
- 18:52Speaker 1: By the way, it was very good conversation between Phil
- 18:56Speaker 1: and Bill at the end of the press conference yesterday.
- 19:02Speaker 1: What I think he's telling you there is you guys,
- 19:05Speaker 1: can you know? And this is as much directed at
- 19:07Speaker 1: mac Jones from last Thursday night as anything else. You
- 19:11Speaker 1: guys can like call for a more aggressive approach. We
- 19:15Speaker 1: can go downfield, we can do this, we can do that.
- 19:18Speaker 1: If you can't execute it right, it doesn't make a
- 19:20Speaker 1: lot of sense. Okay, here's mac Jones's forgive me, I
- 19:25Speaker 1: don't have the acronym down and Evan's not here. What's
- 19:28Speaker 1: adot average depth of targets? Okay, I mean I knew
- 19:34Speaker 1: what it was based on the content, you know, on
- 19:36Speaker 1: the context of the numbers, but I just want to
- 19:38Speaker 1: make sure I'm not giving you the wrong terms. So
- 19:41Speaker 1: mac Jones's average depth of target before the ankle injury
- 19:44Speaker 1: was third in the NFL at ten point four yards
- 19:47Speaker 1: per attempt. Since the ankle injury, it's twenty ninth in
- 19:51Speaker 1: the NFL at six point zero Jones has improved from
- 19:55Speaker 1: five to one touchdown to interception ratio in the last
- 19:58Speaker 1: four games in a ninety seven passer rating. Both our
- 20:02Speaker 1: improvements over the two to five touchdown interception ratio within
- 20:05Speaker 1: seventy six point two rating that he had in the
- 20:07Speaker 1: first three weeks. So all of this, this smash is
- 20:12Speaker 1: telling me that they don't think they can run the
- 20:15Speaker 1: offense that they tried to start the season with or
- 20:18Speaker 1: that wants to run, and that's why they've gone conservative. Yeah,
- 20:22Speaker 1: because now at the same time, I'll give you yeah,
- 20:30Speaker 1: and I've got an answer to this. No, my opinion, Yeah,
- 20:33Speaker 1: I'm tired to what Max said on the sideline. My
- 20:36Speaker 1: thing is go ahead, go ahead. I'm gonna get the
- 20:38Speaker 1: next part of this. And we talked about this early
- 20:40Speaker 1: in the season. You gotta let this guy make mistakes,
- 20:44Speaker 1: you know, like they're so afraid of him making mistakes.
- 20:47Speaker 1: And he played in a box last year. It worked,
- 20:50Speaker 1: It didn't make a ton of mistakes for a rookie,
- 20:52Speaker 1: and they had a tenant seven record, got to the playoffs.
- 20:56Speaker 1: But at some point a quarterback in this league has
- 20:59Speaker 1: to know his limits, has to be allowed to like
- 21:02Speaker 1: make mistakes and they're just so afraid to let that happen.
- 21:07Speaker 1: So you think they put the governor back on. I
- 21:08Speaker 1: think they put the governor back on. Think they put
- 21:11Speaker 1: the governor back with Fred and no? Okay, So here's
- 21:15Speaker 1: now after all those numbers and you can see the
- 21:17Speaker 1: improvement on paper. Yeah, but so but this is what
- 21:21Speaker 1: he's telling. But but this is what the numbers. But
- 21:24Speaker 1: if you break up New England season to this point
- 21:26Speaker 1: into halves, this is Phil Perry writing now, not Bill's quotes.
- 21:30Speaker 1: Including two stops from from Zappi. The team's number of
- 21:33Speaker 1: offensive touchdowns yards per game, third down conversion percentage, and
- 21:37Speaker 1: red zone success rate are all down in their last
- 21:40Speaker 1: six games. So you are protecting the football, yes, great, great,
- 21:45Speaker 1: not moving the ball, and you're not scoring points, which
- 21:48Speaker 1: are the two things that Bill Belichick requires out of
- 21:50Speaker 1: his offense. Ye okay, So here's where I kind of
- 21:54Speaker 1: get a little bit like I just I have like
- 21:57Speaker 1: palms raised on what it's going to take. So at
- 22:01Speaker 1: the end, field kind of surmises Belichick, using the phrase
- 22:03Speaker 1: quote physically can't do might be the difference to what
- 22:07Speaker 1: this team has been dealing with on the might be
- 22:09Speaker 1: a reference to what this team has been dealing with
- 22:11Speaker 1: on the offensive line. Having more aggressive attack usually requires downfield,
- 22:16Speaker 1: you know, takes a little bit and generally speaking, a
- 22:18Speaker 1: little bit more sustained blocks. So he writes, perhaps personnel
- 22:23Speaker 1: issues like issues on the offensive line leading to the
- 22:26Speaker 1: team's offensive philies. Perhaps it's coaching. In all likelihood, it's both.
- 22:30Speaker 1: That may not lead too much in the way of
- 22:33Speaker 1: hope for the Patriots offense moving forward, but it in
- 22:36Speaker 1: Belichick has said changes aren't imminent in order to achieve
- 22:39Speaker 1: that satisfactory level. But what doesn't he add in there
- 22:42Speaker 1: as a possible reason mac Jones in his ability to
- 22:47Speaker 1: protect the ball while being more aggressive, like that's not
- 22:51Speaker 1: part of this. Yeah, And I just think that he
- 22:54Speaker 1: continues to scate because of the coaching situation. I think
- 22:57Speaker 1: it's it's really interesting, Paul, because it's such a conversation
- 22:59Speaker 1: we talked about philosophically of them needing to push the
- 23:03Speaker 1: ball down the field more, and that's what we kind
- 23:05Speaker 1: of took away from early in camp, which just like, God,
- 23:07Speaker 1: this is all they're doing, just chucking it down the field.
- 23:10Speaker 1: And then you know, during the middle part of the
- 23:12Speaker 1: season where it was getting frustrated, or starting to get
- 23:14Speaker 1: frustrated here, everyone's like, can we just go back to
- 23:16Speaker 1: a mac tidwell, you know, and then which led to
- 23:19Speaker 1: the zappy came in and Fred is absolutely right. The
- 23:22Speaker 1: governor went on, they had success, and can't they just
- 23:26Speaker 1: do that? Yeah, and now we've done that and they
- 23:28Speaker 1: don't have success. You're not turning the ball over, but
- 23:31Speaker 1: you're not. And I mean, I love the stats that
- 23:32Speaker 1: you brought up about because that's what it's about. It's
- 23:34Speaker 1: about third down, it's about red zone, it's about points.
- 23:36Speaker 1: I mean those And Bill looks at it and says,
- 23:39Speaker 1: if I can get a quarterback who doesn't turn the
- 23:41Speaker 1: ball over in four games, I'll have a chance to
- 23:42Speaker 1: win those games. Now I would counter with saying, yes,
- 23:46Speaker 1: is Sam Ellinger is the other team's quarterback, you'll have
- 23:48Speaker 1: a chance to win that game. Right, Zach Wilson's the
- 23:50Speaker 1: other team's quarterback, you'll have a chance. I don't think
- 23:53Speaker 1: they had any chance of beating the Buffalo Bills the
- 23:55Speaker 1: other night playing offense the way they played. You know,
- 23:58Speaker 1: and you go back to the first game of the
- 24:00Speaker 1: season against the Dolphins, and you know that that initial
- 24:04Speaker 1: drive where they go right down the field and Mac
- 24:06Speaker 1: throws the interception in the end zone to part intended
- 24:09Speaker 1: to Parker. You know, I'm perfectly fine blaming that on Mac.
- 24:15Speaker 1: You know, he didn't put it high enough. Whatever, Try
- 24:18Speaker 1: it again, but it's like, up, we can't do that again.
- 24:21Speaker 1: We can't throw it into the end zone. Well, they
- 24:23Speaker 1: try to begin the next weekend. We're rewarded with it
- 24:26Speaker 1: when Agalore made a great catch. Well, now I don't
- 24:28Speaker 1: want to live off of that. Yeah, but there's by
- 24:30Speaker 1: balance that you can't find. And that's why and like
- 24:32Speaker 1: I see, and that's you get to Max. Max's frustration
- 24:35Speaker 1: on the sideline and this short stuff isn't working like
- 24:37Speaker 1: and that's what I think that they probably need to
- 24:39Speaker 1: try to figure out here in these next few games,
- 24:41Speaker 1: is how do we get established a confidence level with
- 24:43Speaker 1: Mac with the short stuff, with his you know, with
- 24:45Speaker 1: the governor on but by still being able to use
- 24:48Speaker 1: play action and shots down the field and and have
- 24:50Speaker 1: more aggression than But I think in this league, a
- 24:53Speaker 1: quarterback needs to create his own governor. He needs to
- 24:56Speaker 1: figure out his own went to throttle up, throttle down,
- 25:00Speaker 1: because he has to understand what he can and can't do.
- 25:03Speaker 1: And if you don't let him do it, experience it.
- 25:06Speaker 1: He's never gonna learn. Yeah, I agree with you that.
- 25:10Speaker 1: I just think it's it's it's a painful process in
- 25:13Speaker 1: this league to be a quarterback from from a rookie,
- 25:16Speaker 1: but you have to go through that, you have to
- 25:18Speaker 1: go through it. Yeah. It makes me wonder what Mac
- 25:21Speaker 1: would say, truthfully, you know, what did you learn from
- 25:23Speaker 1: those early games where you were turning the ball over
- 25:26Speaker 1: a ton? You're making bad decisions? I mean, and that's
- 25:28Speaker 1: like it's not even just like the interception itself. It
- 25:31Speaker 1: was a lot of those was just the decision of like,
- 25:33Speaker 1: you can't throw that ball, you know, right? So has
- 25:36Speaker 1: he taken stuff from that? And and you know, I
- 25:38Speaker 1: mean this conversation is kind of like making me perk
- 25:40Speaker 1: up a little bit of like, all right, what could
- 25:42Speaker 1: they could they maybe find a middle ground? Like I mean,
- 25:44Speaker 1: you know, it's it's it's got a lot at this
- 25:46Speaker 1: point that that's going to be the key for next
- 25:48Speaker 1: year is to figure out where they can settle into
- 25:51Speaker 1: because bombs away is not they're not suited for that.
- 25:55Speaker 1: But you can't win doing it the way they did
- 25:57Speaker 1: Thursday night either, So they're gonna have to figure out.
- 26:00Speaker 1: I agree with Fred that's a big part of a
- 26:02Speaker 1: quarterback's development is figuring out when and how those kinds
- 26:06Speaker 1: of chances can be made. You know, you and I
- 26:09Speaker 1: disagreed a little bit. Freddie on the postgame show. I
- 26:12Speaker 1: felt one of the when when Mac I think I
- 26:15Speaker 1: might be having my time off on this Again. I
- 26:17Speaker 1: thought Matt's frustration came on that possession in the fourth
- 26:20Speaker 1: quarter when it was third and fourteen something like that,
- 26:24Speaker 1: and they threw a little They threw a pass that
- 26:26Speaker 1: traveled two yards to Jakobe myers Um and he got
- 26:30Speaker 1: like five set up like a fourth and seven or
- 26:32Speaker 1: something like that. Again, I don't have the exact totals now,
- 26:37Speaker 1: but they were on the Bill's side of the field
- 26:39Speaker 1: fourth and seven ish, and they punted, and I think
- 26:43Speaker 1: Bill wanted I mean, I think Mac wanted to go
- 26:45Speaker 1: for it. I think that's when he went to the sideline.
- 26:48Speaker 1: And you know, in other words, if we're not going
- 26:51Speaker 1: to go for it on third and fourteen, if it's
- 26:53Speaker 1: not two downs, then we can't run a shallow cross, right,
- 26:58Speaker 1: you have to go for the stick, you know. I
- 27:00Speaker 1: think that that's was part of his problem with that
- 27:03Speaker 1: that's the talk of the same stuff on Like like
- 27:07Speaker 1: Fred said that, like the whole the whole thing this
- 27:09Speaker 1: week has been all about the offense and the coaching
- 27:12Speaker 1: in Patricia and all that. So like, yeah, I mean,
- 27:15Speaker 1: sometimes you just gotta play the hits. This is what
- 27:17Speaker 1: we're talking about. But I think that's what Mac was
- 27:19Speaker 1: upset about, and Fred, you and I disagreed. I thought
- 27:21Speaker 1: Bill kind of coach that game the other night to
- 27:25Speaker 1: keep it, you know, reasonably close, and didn't coach it
- 27:29Speaker 1: to win. Yeah, Like I think he felt like, well,
- 27:31Speaker 1: if I go for it here, I'm gonna give the
- 27:33Speaker 1: ball at midfield, it's gonna be thirty one man. You
- 27:35Speaker 1: know it's gonna be thirty one to seven. And you
- 27:37Speaker 1: know if if I throw the ball down the field
- 27:39Speaker 1: and I turned the ball over, it's it's it. We're
- 27:41Speaker 1: gonna get embarrassed on national time. Like I would argue, like,
- 27:45Speaker 1: what's the difference between losing twenty four to seven or
- 27:48Speaker 1: twenty four to ten ultimately, which I thought kicking the
- 27:50Speaker 1: field goal was ridiculous too, But twenty four to ten
- 27:53Speaker 1: and you know, thirty four to ten, well, who cares?
- 27:56Speaker 1: I mean, I know we kind of laugh at like
- 27:58Speaker 1: when people say this, but any credence to the idea
- 28:01Speaker 1: that they're gonna play them again and that game might
- 28:05Speaker 1: be more meaningful than this game possibly, you know, so
- 28:10Speaker 1: you you do certain things. I don't know, I know,
- 28:13Speaker 1: And I almost asked Bill about that once. I was
- 28:15Speaker 1: just and I talked myself out of it because I
- 28:17Speaker 1: felt like I wouldn't get anything interesting of do you
- 28:20Speaker 1: ever hold back or do you ever play a game
- 28:23Speaker 1: with an eye twitter? I mean, I'm sure he would
- 28:24Speaker 1: have been like, no, we just played that. We put
- 28:26Speaker 1: everything into this one game and that's it, you know.
- 28:27Speaker 1: But but I do wonder, with all the advanced scouting
- 28:30Speaker 1: and everything that they do, if if there is some
- 28:32Speaker 1: element of you know, just thinking ahead and or you know,
- 28:35Speaker 1: at these running plays that you're going to counter off
- 28:37Speaker 1: of in the next game, not like, oh, we're gonna
- 28:39Speaker 1: do anything crazy to surprise them and overre not gonna
- 28:42Speaker 1: play our best player in this And what did Evan
- 28:43Speaker 1: say yesterday? I thought I thought he made a comment
- 28:45Speaker 1: about the they their offensive game plan seem predicated on
- 28:50Speaker 1: breaking tackles because the Bills. The Bills defense had missed
- 28:53Speaker 1: a fair share of tackles when there this year and
- 28:57Speaker 1: he and he was like, and Evan counter by saying,
- 28:59Speaker 1: you know, yeah, when they were missing you know, at
- 29:02Speaker 1: times eight of their eleven starters on defense. Yeah, you know,
- 29:06Speaker 1: they played some games really with a very low amount
- 29:09Speaker 1: of starters on defense and they had most of those
- 29:12Speaker 1: guys back. Yeah the other day, that would be that
- 29:14Speaker 1: would be disheartening. I mean, it just sounds like a
- 29:16Speaker 1: you know, a blogger coming up with the game plan
- 29:18Speaker 1: for the team off like, well, it says here that
- 29:19Speaker 1: they've missed a lot of times, we're gonna go try
- 29:22Speaker 1: to make I mean, that's not a bad thing. If
- 29:25Speaker 1: they're not good at tackling, then put them in a
- 29:28Speaker 1: position to have to make one on one tackles. I
- 29:30Speaker 1: don't know what would the plan of been if von
- 29:32Speaker 1: Miller was in there, Like, I mean, then when you're
- 29:34Speaker 1: even more hampered of like how throw the ball down
- 29:36Speaker 1: the field and sustained blocks all that stuff. It's uh,
- 29:39Speaker 1: I mean, I think a lot of this does tie
- 29:41Speaker 1: into the offensive line is everything. There are multiple issues
- 29:44Speaker 1: going on, but yeah, you know, so much of the
- 29:46Speaker 1: offense of doing what you want to do. I mean,
- 29:48Speaker 1: just listening to Little Plug Paul's great new Paths from
- 29:51Speaker 1: the Past with Logan Mankins, it was outstanding. Um, you know,
- 29:54Speaker 1: he just comes with a quote of, you know, talking
- 29:56Speaker 1: about the Super Bowl forty two. Yeah, you know, the
- 29:58Speaker 1: offensive line as we didn't play that well. Very often,
- 30:01Speaker 1: when the offensive line doesn't play well, you're not gonna win.
- 30:03Speaker 1: You know what. I really liked about that line. He said,
- 30:05Speaker 1: we didn't play well. And then he immediately stopped and
- 30:07Speaker 1: he said, I didn't play well. Right, that's right. I
- 30:12Speaker 1: don't want to Hi, it's bad I did it. It
- 30:14Speaker 1: was twenty eleven, the year he played on the on
- 30:16Speaker 1: the torn acl Was that was that the year? I
- 30:18Speaker 1: think I don't remember. I think it was. Yeah, yeah,
- 30:21Speaker 1: but they kicked him out the tackle when they had
- 30:23Speaker 1: too when he played just as well a tackle. Yeah.
- 30:26Speaker 1: It was about that too. A little little side, I mean,
- 30:28Speaker 1: it's a pump paulse and Matt's tires a little bit.
- 30:31Speaker 1: But it was one of my favorite episodes. He's just
- 30:33Speaker 1: such a likable guy. Saw spoken and we all know
- 30:35Speaker 1: how he was on the field, and um, you know,
- 30:37Speaker 1: you never heard much from Logan Mankins while he was here.
- 30:40Speaker 1: He just kind of showed up and played his ass
- 30:42Speaker 1: off and he was the offensive version of Gilmore. Yeah,
- 30:45Speaker 1: I said a lot, but he said it really quietly.
- 30:47Speaker 1: People didn't realize he was saying. So. My favorite moment
- 30:50Speaker 1: with Mankins on the field is in Denver. We're getting
- 30:52Speaker 1: we're getting beat and he's having a hard time and
- 30:55Speaker 1: he's on his knees in front of the defensive lineman
- 30:57Speaker 1: plays over. This is after the whistle and he's on
- 31:00Speaker 1: two knees and he just rears back and punches the
- 31:03Speaker 1: guy in the nuts. I mean, I did punch the guy.
- 31:05Speaker 1: Didn't ask him about that, you know, I do remember
- 31:08Speaker 1: it though. I'll never forget that. It was like he
- 31:11Speaker 1: didn't care. He just he just rear back and punched
- 31:14Speaker 1: the guy in the nuts. The great stories probably be
- 31:18Speaker 1: ready with him and matt Light getting ready to take
- 31:20Speaker 1: on Channing Crowder or you know, just I mean, it's
- 31:22Speaker 1: just you love those guys. I mean, they were just
- 31:25Speaker 1: such a THEO was that the bearded band of brothers
- 31:28Speaker 1: like that. They were every year and um, it's a
- 31:30Speaker 1: great group. It was. It was. Yeah, good check it out.
- 31:34Speaker 1: I just wrote up a thing on it too. It
- 31:35Speaker 1: passed from the past. We'll do a clip. I was
- 31:37Speaker 1: talking to Mattie about it tomorrow. So yeah, I mean
- 31:40Speaker 1: we talked about it on our staff meeting yesterday. Those
- 31:44Speaker 1: are going to have increased importance as we get it
- 31:47Speaker 1: further away from the dynasty. Yeah, you know, to kind
- 31:49Speaker 1: of capture all the thoughts of those players that were
- 31:53Speaker 1: involved in that. You know, I just as the fan
- 31:56Speaker 1: in me, and I mean I've said this before, but
- 31:58Speaker 1: what I always just love about those kind of things
- 32:00Speaker 1: is you know, you watched the game as a fan
- 32:02Speaker 1: and unfolds and you know they win or lose, and
- 32:04Speaker 1: you're elated or you're you're really upset, but you never
- 32:06Speaker 1: really you know, feel connection to the team as far
- 32:09Speaker 1: as that you know, they come in, well, we gotta
- 32:10Speaker 1: go back to the drawing board, you know. But to
- 32:11Speaker 1: hear the players like to hear Logan, they get to
- 32:13Speaker 1: talk about the six AFC Championship and be like, I
- 32:16Speaker 1: don't know how we lost that game. You know, I
- 32:18Speaker 1: couldn't believe it. I'm saying, you know what else he said,
- 32:20Speaker 1: we'd have won that, Yeah he did. I couldn't believe it.
- 32:23Speaker 1: He's like, I mean, we obviously would have won that
- 32:24Speaker 1: Super Bowl against Chicago and it's the only one I
- 32:26Speaker 1: could not But it was. It's just cool when you
- 32:31Speaker 1: hear those guys and you hear they were, you know,
- 32:33Speaker 1: experiencing the same emotions that you were. We were making
- 32:36Speaker 1: travel plans at halftime, and I mean when at ran
- 32:39Speaker 1: that interstelling back, yeah, it was like and then it
- 32:42Speaker 1: just collapsed. I remember there was a couple there were
- 32:45Speaker 1: a couple of guys there. Um you know that you
- 32:47Speaker 1: know one one in particular. I used to work with
- 32:50Speaker 1: The Herald, this guy named Jerry Sparr who had kind
- 32:53Speaker 1: of like what Greg Bernard does now, like his own website,
- 32:56Speaker 1: and he was like making arrangements and he had a
- 32:59Speaker 1: books on then and then like this is all at
- 33:01Speaker 1: half time because you knew the prices, you knew the
- 33:04Speaker 1: prices were gonna skyride. And he was like, I just
- 33:07Speaker 1: wasted so much more. He's like so mad after they
- 33:10Speaker 1: lost Evans here and to pic in the same building
- 33:24Speaker 1: as me. He's back from Bill. So tell us what
- 33:28Speaker 1: Bill Belichick had to say today. It was an interesting
- 33:31Speaker 1: press conference because it was normal press conference. And then
- 33:36Speaker 1: Andrew Calhan from The Herald came in and tried to
- 33:40Speaker 1: hold his feet to the fire a little bit about
- 33:42Speaker 1: the offensive coaching staff and the play calling and things
- 33:46Speaker 1: like that. So it was it was mostly normal, right,
- 33:49Speaker 1: like you know, normal press conference, asking about different players,
- 33:53Speaker 1: asking about guys that are on ir He did mention
- 33:56Speaker 1: that Christian Barmore still undecided whether or not he's going
- 33:59Speaker 1: to come out out West with the team or not
- 34:02Speaker 1: he because he will be eligible to play in the
- 34:04Speaker 1: Raiders game technically, so if he travels or doesn't travel,
- 34:08Speaker 1: is going to dictate whether or not he's gonna be
- 34:10Speaker 1: out there for practice most likely, So still undecided on that.
- 34:15Speaker 1: The question about the play calling was essentially, you said
- 34:19Speaker 1: yesterday you feel good about the system. What about it
- 34:23Speaker 1: do you feel good about? You know, what is it
- 34:24Speaker 1: that you feel good about? Exactly? And he Belichick of
- 34:28Speaker 1: course corrected a little bit, I think from a response
- 34:31Speaker 1: that he gave yesterday and said, look, you know, we
- 34:33Speaker 1: can do everything better. I'm not saying that we can't
- 34:35Speaker 1: be better in that aspect of offense. But he continues
- 34:39Speaker 1: to harp on consistency and execution. Let's just do what
- 34:44Speaker 1: we're doing better versus trying to reinvent the wheel in
- 34:48Speaker 1: week thirteen and change it up on the fly. Yeah,
- 34:51Speaker 1: I mean, there is something to be said about like,
- 34:54Speaker 1: you know, let's see if we can do this right first,
- 34:57Speaker 1: because we're making mistakes. So let's what happens if we,
- 35:01Speaker 1: you know, minimize the mistakes before we start making wholesale changes.
- 35:06Speaker 1: I get that, you know, and I get his point about, look,
- 35:09Speaker 1: they're not going to go to the veer offense. But
- 35:11Speaker 1: I think I don't know if I haven't said this
- 35:12Speaker 1: on the yesterday, but he's like play callers get changed
- 35:16Speaker 1: all the time in the NFL. Like it's not like
- 35:18Speaker 1: like you don't have to change the whole offense. You
- 35:20Speaker 1: could just you know, make it, make a simple change
- 35:22Speaker 1: like that. Um, but how many how many times though
- 35:24Speaker 1: when you see those things happen? Is it just scapegoating? Yeah?
- 35:28Speaker 1: You know, I mean I tell you it's the right
- 35:30Speaker 1: move every time. I remember Frank. But I think the
- 35:33Speaker 1: point Mike is trying to make is it happens all
- 35:35Speaker 1: the time. Yeah. But like Frank Reich with that with
- 35:37Speaker 1: like their offensive corners fired like a week before and
- 35:40Speaker 1: then he got fired. Yeah. Well, coaches you know, take
- 35:43Speaker 1: play calling duties, they give away you know, it's like
- 35:46Speaker 1: it happens all the time. That I said yesterday, The
- 35:49Speaker 1: Green Bay Special teams coach, they were terrible on special teams.
- 35:53Speaker 1: He got fired, they brought in a new guy. Didn't
- 35:56Speaker 1: Charlie Weiss lose play calling duties at one point or
- 35:59Speaker 1: didn't something happened with him happen I'm aware of, Yeah,
- 36:03Speaker 1: but you know it does happen a lot. But I
- 36:05Speaker 1: also just think that what difference does it really make?
- 36:08Speaker 1: Like I just I think that like the way that
- 36:10Speaker 1: they do it, Like if you had another play caller
- 36:12Speaker 1: in there right now, he's just gonna be calling the
- 36:14Speaker 1: same places that Matt Patricia's basically calling. Well, Like I
- 36:16Speaker 1: don't know how much wiggle room this play caller really
- 36:19Speaker 1: has to, Like I just I picture them all in
- 36:22Speaker 1: a room doing it together, and regardless of who's the
- 36:24Speaker 1: guy in the iramac they need a new setup, like
- 36:28Speaker 1: they need like this is the stuff that Evan's been
- 36:30Speaker 1: harping on all Like they don't really have a good
- 36:32Speaker 1: plan all the time. They don't have great design all
- 36:34Speaker 1: the time. So it's just where do you go from there?
- 36:36Speaker 1: They don't have a good to me is they don't
- 36:38Speaker 1: have a good foundation, Like what do they do well
- 36:41Speaker 1: and what is their identity as an offense where they
- 36:44Speaker 1: can fall back on it and say this is what
- 36:47Speaker 1: we're gonna do to get down the field. To me,
- 36:50Speaker 1: I think there's a couple things. One, the Broncos just
- 36:53Speaker 1: changed their play caller, Nathaniel Hackett handed it over to
- 36:57Speaker 1: a Clint Kobi act their pass game coordinator. Week obviously
- 37:01Speaker 1: didn't work out very well for their offense last week,
- 37:03Speaker 1: but it just happened in Denver, so it's not like
- 37:06Speaker 1: this is like completely foreign to happen in the NFL.
- 37:09Speaker 1: I think the other thing is, once we get down
- 37:12Speaker 1: the stretch here a little bit, and let's say they
- 37:15Speaker 1: are out of the playoffs, it would be nice to
- 37:18Speaker 1: know if Nick Kayley can do it right, because you
- 37:21Speaker 1: have to go into next season. It's kind of like
- 37:22Speaker 1: in twenty twenty when they insisted on playing Cam Newton
- 37:25Speaker 1: down the stretch and we never figured out what they
- 37:27Speaker 1: had in Jared Stidham because they wanted to stick with Cam. Well,
- 37:31Speaker 1: if you're stick with Matt Patricia in the final two
- 37:33Speaker 1: weeks of the year when you're mathematically eliminated from the
- 37:35Speaker 1: playoffs and you're not really learning about the other coaches
- 37:38Speaker 1: on the staff. And the third thing I would say
- 37:40Speaker 1: is just they last week they came out with a
- 37:43Speaker 1: game plan of this quick game, get the ball out
- 37:46Speaker 1: of max hands, get it to the skill players, try
- 37:49Speaker 1: to create yards after the catch, and then next week
- 37:52Speaker 1: they'll come out with a completely different plan. And when
- 37:56Speaker 1: they had Brady, when they had Josh McDaniels, when they
- 37:58Speaker 1: had a good solid foundation, I think you could do that,
- 38:03Speaker 1: or you can change a week to week and be
- 38:05Speaker 1: a game plan offense and do what's best against a
- 38:07Speaker 1: particular defense. Now I just want to see them execute
- 38:10Speaker 1: ten plays well, like can you what can you execute well?
- 38:13Speaker 1: And can you execute a group of plays consistently weekend
- 38:16Speaker 1: and week out. I think we get lost sometimes in
- 38:19Speaker 1: this game plan offense, game plan defense minutia where they're
- 38:23Speaker 1: trying to reinvent the wheel during the week a little bit,
- 38:25Speaker 1: and it's like, but that's not what you do well
- 38:27Speaker 1: or what do you do to the point I I mean,
- 38:29Speaker 1: I've been thinking about it too, and it made me
- 38:31Speaker 1: wonder if you know, even the with Josh, there was
- 38:34Speaker 1: always like a basis, and I wonder if at this
- 38:37Speaker 1: point they were just like, well, we don't We're just
- 38:39Speaker 1: game plan we're doing We're changing up every why do
- 38:41Speaker 1: we even need the basis, you know, like that it
- 38:43Speaker 1: feels like they threw that out. They threw the baby
- 38:44Speaker 1: out with the bath water soda speak with some I
- 38:47Speaker 1: don't know. I mean it's it's and I don't think
- 38:50Speaker 1: you can ignore the fact that when even if you
- 38:53Speaker 1: have a good plan, like let's say Minnesota, like they
- 38:57Speaker 1: came out, they ran pretty good offense that night, but
- 39:01Speaker 1: then when it's time to adjust in time to like
- 39:03Speaker 1: get into it, like you have guys like you say,
- 39:05Speaker 1: like you know Josh always had like a baselet well
- 39:08Speaker 1: they they had those hours in years and you know,
- 39:11Speaker 1: hundreds of games to fall back on. Oh yeah, you
- 39:14Speaker 1: know might work here. They're gonna do this. They adjusted
- 39:17Speaker 1: to this. We're gonna do what we did back in uh,
- 39:19Speaker 1: you know the last time we played Minnesota and like
- 39:21Speaker 1: that that you know, whatever game. And I don't know
- 39:24Speaker 1: if they have that catalog to fall back on their
- 39:26Speaker 1: defensive guys and it goes it goes back. I think
- 39:28Speaker 1: never done it. To what Fred said, And I'm not
- 39:31Speaker 1: saying that that, you know, but there needs to be
- 39:33Speaker 1: some kind of a little bit of leeway with a
- 39:35Speaker 1: new play caller. And I'm not saying this to be
- 39:37Speaker 1: like Matt Patrician. We need to give him time. Like
- 39:39Speaker 1: and you know, before this show, I was talking about
- 39:41Speaker 1: if they just promoted Nick Kaylee and it looked the
- 39:43Speaker 1: same as it does right now, you know, would everybody'd
- 39:45Speaker 1: be killing Kaylee like they killed Patricia Um. But you know,
- 39:49Speaker 1: I just that that's where I live of, Like, all right,
- 39:51Speaker 1: how much leeway do you give any new offensive coordinator
- 39:54Speaker 1: or play caller at the beginning? What was it like
- 39:56Speaker 1: for Josh in two thousand and five? You know, what
- 39:58Speaker 1: was How does he go from becoming you know, the
- 40:00Speaker 1: guy in two thousand and five after Charlie left to
- 40:02Speaker 1: designing the two thousand and seven offense, and you know,
- 40:05Speaker 1: putting Randy Moss and Wes Welker in such position to
- 40:08Speaker 1: have dominant seasons, You know, I'd love to think that
- 40:11Speaker 1: Nick Kayley could develop into that guy. I just I
- 40:13Speaker 1: don't know. I don't know. Everybody talks about Nick Kayley
- 40:16Speaker 1: like he's the great White Knight um to save us,
- 40:18Speaker 1: And I don't know, I don't know anything about Nick Kiley,
- 40:21Speaker 1: like at least be right, But I mean, I mean
- 40:25Speaker 1: I would say, what did Josh? I mean that was
- 40:27Speaker 1: like Josh mcknell's eighth year in the offense. Well, but
- 40:31Speaker 1: I mean fourth, I mean he got what two thousand, No,
- 40:35Speaker 1: but I would say that certainly when he came in,
- 40:38Speaker 1: he was eighted greatly by Tom Brady's presence, Like anybody
- 40:41Speaker 1: would argue against that, and these guys don't have that luxury.
- 40:44Speaker 1: I just think some of their their concepts against Minnesota
- 40:47Speaker 1: that they were running from the shotgun that we're working,
- 40:50Speaker 1: those are I think are things that we've seen for
- 40:52Speaker 1: two years now work. And not to excuse the play calling,
- 40:56Speaker 1: but their offensive line it's not gonna it wasn't holding
- 41:00Speaker 1: up last week to run those plays. And that's really
- 41:03Speaker 1: been a big thing. I think that you know, you
- 41:06Speaker 1: want to get into what's actually going on on the
- 41:08Speaker 1: field and the personnel and not so much about the
- 41:11Speaker 1: play callers. That's happening is that they have just been
- 41:17Speaker 1: you know, Belichick said it yesterday. The availability has been
- 41:19Speaker 1: inconsistent on the offensive line. David Andrews coming in and
- 41:22Speaker 1: out of the lineup, Trent Brown coming in and out
- 41:24Speaker 1: of the facility because he's got this illness, you know,
- 41:27Speaker 1: right tackle. They're on their fourth right tackle now with
- 41:29Speaker 1: Connor McDermott. Cole Strange has been on the rookie seesaw
- 41:33Speaker 1: right where he's up and down with his play. Really
- 41:35Speaker 1: the only guy that's been in the same spot that's
- 41:37Speaker 1: Ben solid as Mike on WINU and I think that's
- 41:40Speaker 1: why they don't want to move him around, is because
- 41:42Speaker 1: he's like the one thing that they have right. So
- 41:44Speaker 1: in some respects, you have to look at it and
- 41:47Speaker 1: look at the play to play execution a little bit too,
- 41:50Speaker 1: and say, well, okay, against Minnesota, when they didn't have
- 41:53Speaker 1: the pass rush that a Buffalo has, or that a
- 41:56Speaker 1: Jets team has or a Colt's team has, they're able
- 41:58Speaker 1: to block some of these downfield passing concepts. And then
- 42:01Speaker 1: they get into the Buffalo game and every time they
- 42:03Speaker 1: try to drop back past it's a disaster up front.
- 42:06Speaker 1: So there's a lot going on with the offensive line too.
- 42:10Speaker 1: But I just I think that the foundational elements of
- 42:15Speaker 1: this offense is a where they lack it. You mentioned
- 42:17Speaker 1: McDaniels foundation. McDaniel's foundation was power eye Like his foundation
- 42:22Speaker 1: was under center, full back in the backfield. You know,
- 42:25Speaker 1: we're going to be a power run team. We're gonna
- 42:27Speaker 1: play action off the power run like that was always
- 42:29Speaker 1: what they could fall back on on first and second down,
- 42:33Speaker 1: which is really when your foundational elements come out. Third
- 42:36Speaker 1: down is sort of the game plan stuff, that's sort
- 42:38Speaker 1: of your passing game stuff. First and second down is
- 42:40Speaker 1: what you are identity wise as an offense, and they
- 42:43Speaker 1: just don't have that identity anymore. I want to, I
- 42:46Speaker 1: want to. I want to dig a little deeper on
- 42:47Speaker 1: this Nick Kiley thing because I just looked it up,
- 42:49Speaker 1: and I guess what's not sitting with me is that
- 42:52Speaker 1: how long Matt Patricia been annoying? How long has he
- 42:55Speaker 1: coached in the NFL? Twenty plus years? He's been a
- 42:58Speaker 1: head coach, right, Nick Keilles coach seven years of tight ends? Here,
- 43:01Speaker 1: he was ten year coach in college on the defensive
- 43:04Speaker 1: side of the ball. So I'm just the next job,
- 43:08Speaker 1: I'm saying, are saying, I know, But are we saying
- 43:11Speaker 1: seven years coaching the tight end group is paramount? Is
- 43:16Speaker 1: greater than a twenty year Yeah. And if I would
- 43:20Speaker 1: also also coached on the head, you'd give the seven
- 43:22Speaker 1: year tight end coach. I would say anybody that's coached
- 43:24Speaker 1: offense would have an edge over a guy who's only
- 43:26Speaker 1: coached defense for the most part. But he's been but
- 43:28Speaker 1: I mean he was assistant offensive line coach for a year,
- 43:30Speaker 1: but a head coach too. That's something that's nothing for me. Nothing.
- 43:34Speaker 1: Would you would you want to hire Bill as your
- 43:36Speaker 1: offensive coordinator tomorrow? He's been a head coach and the
- 43:39Speaker 1: most successful one that's ever done it. Yeah, I would.
- 43:41Speaker 1: I wouldn't probably. I mean this to me, this is
- 43:44Speaker 1: Bill being the offensive coordinator to a degree, Like this
- 43:47Speaker 1: is the offensive he puts out there right like, I
- 43:49Speaker 1: thank you. The sample is not very good, if that's
- 43:51Speaker 1: like where you want to go at the conversation. I mean,
- 43:54Speaker 1: he's the greatest head coach in the history. I wouldn't
- 43:56Speaker 1: want to hire him to He would not be hiring
- 43:58Speaker 1: my list of offensive coordinator candids tomorrow. Yeah, And he's
- 44:01Speaker 1: the best head coach he's ever done it. I'd hired
- 44:03Speaker 1: him to anything. You would hire him to your lawn?
- 44:06Speaker 1: I get it. That might take a while. I'm not
- 44:09Speaker 1: saying it to like you know, but I just we
- 44:11Speaker 1: get so into like he's never even coached offense before,
- 44:14Speaker 1: you know, like and and there's certainly validity to that.
- 44:17Speaker 1: And I'm not trying to say that there isn't. But
- 44:19Speaker 1: at the same time, I don't think anyone has really
- 44:20Speaker 1: mentioned that Nick Kaylee was a ten year coach on
- 44:22Speaker 1: the defensive side of the ball. But because he's coached
- 44:24Speaker 1: tight ends were like, let's just hand him the keys.
- 44:26Speaker 1: It's got to be better than mat Patricia. Well, people
- 44:28Speaker 1: just see. But that last part I would agree with
- 44:30Speaker 1: the first part, like he would not have been high
- 44:32Speaker 1: on my list of candidates to replace Josh McDaniels, but
- 44:36Speaker 1: based on what was left, he's would be the highest
- 44:39Speaker 1: on the list. It's either you or you, like we've
- 44:43Speaker 1: talked about. I think it was before you show, you know.
- 44:46Speaker 1: You know a lot of people think, oh, well, you know,
- 44:47Speaker 1: Bill wanted to keep Nick. You know, he didn't let
- 44:50Speaker 1: him go, but he was the only guy that couldn't
- 44:52Speaker 1: go because he was on the contract. And Bill might
- 44:54Speaker 1: have been like, Josh, you're not taking everybody, you know,
- 44:57Speaker 1: And it might not have been like, oh, I've I've
- 45:00Speaker 1: tapped Nick Kayley for anything special. It might have been
- 45:02Speaker 1: just frustration, like you're not taking everybody. I need some
- 45:06Speaker 1: type of continuity, you know, I gotta keep somebody, you know.
- 45:10Speaker 1: I also, I think he leaves next year. That's I mean,
- 45:12Speaker 1: that's what I think. Well, I think, you know, you've
- 45:14Speaker 1: got a taste of having been offered something and now
- 45:17Speaker 1: it's in your head, you know, right right right? Well,
- 45:22Speaker 1: and that's the other one. Am I missing out on
- 45:23Speaker 1: by staying here? That's what I pushed back on pre show.
- 45:26Speaker 1: It was just that I don't get the whole point
- 45:27Speaker 1: of we can't promote him because then he'll leave, Like
- 45:30Speaker 1: if you don't promote him, he's goes because like you
- 45:34Speaker 1: might as well take a shot and and and give
- 45:36Speaker 1: the guy a chance. And it was also a message
- 45:38Speaker 1: to the other coaches. But here's the other thing. So
- 45:41Speaker 1: he was gonna go because Josh probably would have taken him,
- 45:44Speaker 1: Josh who knows him. But is Nick this commodity otherwise?
- 45:48Speaker 1: That's my point. I have no idea what Nick Kayley.
- 45:52Speaker 1: Just to tell the whole story here, Tom Pellisera does
- 45:55Speaker 1: a list every year of like rising star coaches in
- 45:58Speaker 1: the league. Nick Kayley has been on that list for
- 46:00Speaker 1: like three straight seasons. Okay, you know so, and that's
- 46:03Speaker 1: Tom Peli Sara, it's a national reporter. Yeah, you know me,
- 46:06Speaker 1: all right? So is that based on the eighteen season coach?
- 46:10Speaker 1: I have not. I have no idea what Nick Kaylee
- 46:12Speaker 1: is as a coach, right, And I do know of
- 46:13Speaker 1: the list that I was talking about it. I always
- 46:16Speaker 1: laugh at some of the names on it. There's some
- 46:17Speaker 1: bad names and there's some good names. Right. A lot
- 46:19Speaker 1: of these media guys, they just fashioned themselves as you know, coachmakers,
- 46:24Speaker 1: you know, kingmakers, you know, guy, I guess I don't
- 46:27Speaker 1: know what. No one could deserve that job more than
- 46:28Speaker 1: this guy. There's even like it's like, who's who's like
- 46:31Speaker 1: to reserve Dolphins wide receiver coach? Right, Dolphins wide receiver
- 46:34Speaker 1: coaches Southern hot? He must really hot. Then you find
- 46:38Speaker 1: out that his agent is the same as the right
- 46:40Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, those two guys went to the same
- 46:44Speaker 1: college and were there together. Oh that's why I don't
- 46:48Speaker 1: always take some of those things. And Idsen on the
- 46:51Speaker 1: list probably too, right, Like every every year, I mean,
- 46:53Speaker 1: Mayo is always on it. And people have always said,
- 46:56Speaker 1: how did he ascend to a head coaching candidate so fast?
- 46:58Speaker 1: And guy, it's a great guy right with the media,
- 47:02Speaker 1: always has been Oh great relationship. He worked for a
- 47:05Speaker 1: private company and they said he was good. You know,
- 47:07Speaker 1: it's like great relationships with there's so much that goes
- 47:10Speaker 1: on behind the scenes that we don't know and we
- 47:12Speaker 1: will never know, you know, like we have no idea
- 47:15Speaker 1: like what's going on with this coaching staff and the
- 47:17Speaker 1: conversations and the factions and who's you know, speaking out
- 47:22Speaker 1: and who's not and opinions, and we have no idea. Yeah,
- 47:25Speaker 1: that's why just the quick, quick little preview Cardinals. I've
- 47:28Speaker 1: been watching Hard Knocks. I just flip that on last night.
- 47:30Speaker 1: I plowed through a couple of episodes, and it's always
- 47:32Speaker 1: what the Cardinals worked so hard. Yeah, I love that
- 47:36Speaker 1: kind of stuff. But I mean, it's it's funny you
- 47:37Speaker 1: said that, because those are the times when you do
- 47:41Speaker 1: actually see what's going on behind the scenes of the
- 47:43Speaker 1: coaching meetings, and you know, even just to see like
- 47:46Speaker 1: the coaching staff, which by the way, it's weird. It's
- 47:48Speaker 1: like they're in like an auditorium and and what's his face?
- 47:50Speaker 1: The coach like sits up on the on this he
- 47:52Speaker 1: sits up on the stage. You better you might want
- 47:55Speaker 1: to know that name it I'm just saying. But he's
- 48:00Speaker 1: just like on the stage, and like all the coaches
- 48:02Speaker 1: like just kind of are spread out in the in
- 48:03Speaker 1: the audience of the of the auditorium, and he's just
- 48:05Speaker 1: kind of like sitting in a chair up on the stage,
- 48:07Speaker 1: like dictating to giving a ted talk a little bit.
- 48:09Speaker 1: And that's what it felt like. I totally well, it
- 48:11Speaker 1: used to be the offensive line coach until he got
- 48:13Speaker 1: caught groping people in Mexico. I haven't gotten to that part.
- 48:16Speaker 1: It hard, but just so many of the details of
- 48:19Speaker 1: coordinating an offense, and I get into all the scheme
- 48:22Speaker 1: stuff like why aren't they using a guy like this
- 48:24Speaker 1: or why aren't they running this player that play? But
- 48:26Speaker 1: it's also just this the details of route spacing, drop
- 48:30Speaker 1: back timing, you know, uh, executing handoffs on third and
- 48:34Speaker 1: one on the opening drop you know, stuff like that
- 48:38Speaker 1: that you just see. It would fundamentals on the offensive line.
- 48:44Speaker 1: Fundamentals on the offensive line. Like you know, we were
- 48:48Speaker 1: talking about this earlier, another pre show thing when um,
- 48:53Speaker 1: you know, evaluating this draft class, because we were talking
- 48:55Speaker 1: about this a little bit yesterday. Can I fairly evaluate
- 48:58Speaker 1: Cold Strange and Taekwon Thornton in the prism of this
- 49:01Speaker 1: offense right now? Like, how am I supposed to say that?
- 49:05Speaker 1: You know, Cole Strange has not played particularly I would
- 49:07Speaker 1: say strange. Yes, Thornton, I just don't know how you
- 49:10Speaker 1: can do that, because it's strange getting the coaching that
- 49:13Speaker 1: he needs on his technique and on his fundamentals. For
- 49:16Speaker 1: Matt Patricia, I don't know. I mean maybe maybe not,
- 49:18Speaker 1: But isn't like alignment only Like, Okay, your technique is
- 49:22Speaker 1: one thing and your results are kind of right that
- 49:25Speaker 1: Like with Thornton, he's not really being given a huge
- 49:28Speaker 1: chance to establish himself a role in this offense. So
- 49:31Speaker 1: I totally get That's why I'm not ready to say, well,
- 49:34Speaker 1: I'm not get another second round receiver bus like no,
- 49:37Speaker 1: like I'm not ready to do that with Thornton. I'm
- 49:40Speaker 1: not gonna go and say, you know, if Dante was
- 49:42Speaker 1: still here, would Cole Strange be better? Obviously everybody would
- 49:44Speaker 1: be better if Dante was still here, agreed, If Carmen
- 49:47Speaker 1: Priscilla was still here, would Cole Strange be better? He
- 49:50Speaker 1: probably would be better, right, So, like that's just the
- 49:52Speaker 1: thing is I have a bad game. You look at
- 49:57Speaker 1: the tape, and it's good to have a coach to say,
- 49:59Speaker 1: here's what you did wrong, let's work on yeah, right,
- 50:01Speaker 1: you know, I mean I also think what Mac was
- 50:03Speaker 1: saying too after the game the other night, that he
- 50:04Speaker 1: wants to be coached harder. Yeah he does. He's like
- 50:08Speaker 1: the guy in Da Vinci Code would create a self flagellation.
- 50:12Speaker 1: That just it does stand out to me that when
- 50:16Speaker 1: have you ever heard that come out of this building
- 50:19Speaker 1: that they're not coaching the players hard enough. Like that's
- 50:22Speaker 1: just intense for Bill Belichick's coaching staff to not be
- 50:25Speaker 1: lacing into players when there's errors on the tape and
- 50:28Speaker 1: they have to make corrections and things like that. I
- 50:30Speaker 1: mean some of the stories that you've heard of Belichick
- 50:33Speaker 1: ripping players and team meetings and stuff like that. I
- 50:35Speaker 1: mean Julian Edelman goes on TV sometimes and share some
- 50:38Speaker 1: of the stories. Edelman, the guy from Foxborough High makes
- 50:41Speaker 1: this catch, you know, like things like in front of me,
- 50:45Speaker 1: I can't complain, Yeah I can't. Right, I've heard, like
- 50:50Speaker 1: players say and coaches like, if you know, if this
- 50:53Speaker 1: organization's structure is like going to school, the Patriots is
- 50:58Speaker 1: like getting your PhD. It's like football university. It's like
- 51:01Speaker 1: you learn, so you know, like, and that's the opposite
- 51:04Speaker 1: of what we just heard from Mac. I want to
- 51:05Speaker 1: be coached harder, right, you know, And I think to
- 51:08Speaker 1: Evans point though, like that's why, like a lot of
- 51:10Speaker 1: the players are out of my cross heres right now.
- 51:12Speaker 1: Like I like early in the season, I was kind
- 51:14Speaker 1: of like, come on, Mac, you gotta do better, you know.
- 51:16Speaker 1: And I'm just and I still have issues with you know,
- 51:18Speaker 1: him overall as a player, but I just, you know,
- 51:20Speaker 1: I agree with the larger point of just like I
- 51:23Speaker 1: feel like they're being undercut at the start and it's hard.
- 51:26Speaker 1: It's hard for them to you know, be able to
- 51:28Speaker 1: show what they truly are as players when you're not
- 51:31Speaker 1: doing what the Patriots traditionally have done and put your
- 51:34Speaker 1: players in the best position to succeed. Yeah, we were
- 51:37Speaker 1: talking about Hunter Henry a little bit as well, and
- 51:40Speaker 1: he's got an out in his contract after this year.
- 51:43Speaker 1: They can save ten million bucks on the salary cap
- 51:45Speaker 1: if they cut Hunter Henry going into next year. And
- 51:49Speaker 1: he's another one of those players too that he has
- 51:52Speaker 1: really struggled the block, like really struggled to block all
- 51:55Speaker 1: year long. But when you actually watch the assignments that
- 51:58Speaker 1: they're giving him, he's blocking a lot of edge rushers,
- 52:01Speaker 1: like a lot of defensive ends or stand up outside
- 52:03Speaker 1: linebackers like Matthew Judon types, and he's being asked to
- 52:07Speaker 1: block these guys one on one on these passing plays
- 52:10Speaker 1: like he's an offensive tackle, and to degree you have
- 52:13Speaker 1: to say, well, how many times do you have to
- 52:15Speaker 1: see him fail at it? Right? And you know, if
- 52:19Speaker 1: he's out there blocking you know, off ball linebackers and
- 52:22Speaker 1: safeties and corners versus blocking you know, Greg Russo coming
- 52:27Speaker 1: off the edge, like, it's probably gonna look a whole
- 52:29Speaker 1: lot different for a guy like Hunter Henry in the
- 52:32Speaker 1: blocking game. So it just there's so many things from
- 52:36Speaker 1: assignments to game plans to details like that they just
- 52:40Speaker 1: don't do well. That's right. It's like a hard decision
- 52:42Speaker 1: of like I'm like, I can't, like, I can't cut
- 52:44Speaker 1: Hunter Henry right now. I can't pound the table for
- 52:46Speaker 1: that because I don't know what the heck can do, Like,
- 52:48Speaker 1: you know, I wish it was John. All Right, we're

- 1:02:32Speaker 1: gonna just say this, the reason why I don't get
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: into college football in the fall is because I have
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: what's called a girlfriend and I had shot fireball Saturday.
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: I spend it with Jess. There you go. I'm going
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: to truly enjoy my Saturday this week. And I thought
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: you said we weren't doing we weren't doing personally. That's
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: another great moment from and if you want more of that,
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: exchange that that chemistry after this show, Catch twenty two
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: that remains one of the greatest evident Alex. I'm gonna
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: use that on the show. I thought we weren't the
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: first time I've heard that since. And then that was
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: he went to the Juggle. I can't believe he's recovered.
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: He was down. It's good stuff. He was down, but
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: luckily at a college football Saturday and he was fine.
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: Oh he's going to Army Navy. So he's he's all
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: excited this week. Oh yeah, wow, good for him. I
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: am planning on going to that next year. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: they're they're sending them. Um, it's the holiday season. You
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: know who's ready? They are. FedEx is ready for the holidays.
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: What else are they ready for? I don't know, but
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: they're ready for the holidays and they're getting those packages out.
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: You know, Amazon was down today, like the whole website
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: was down. You couldn't place an order. So I placed
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: an order on Amazon yesterday. Yeah, and evidently I had
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: a I had an account that I haven't used in forever,
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: goes back to Prebeth. Really, it was back to when
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: I lived in my parents. Was that right shipped? My
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: shipping came up. It was my my original effort address
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: A couple of times like I'm gonna have to change,
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: Oh no, it's going to California on one. Yeah, I'm
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: just I'm not going to say it. We said no personal.
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: Oh you could take personal shots at me Prebeth and
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: the internet. Oh no, that's a good personal that's a
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: really good persons that's been around since the mid nineties.
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: Amazon though, Yeah, Amazon, Well, I was trying to do
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: the math in my head, like it was funny because
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: I had um I was living in an apartment in
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: everyt but I had everything shipped to my parents house
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: because there was like a verification phone number and I
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: had to figure it out like the last two you know,
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: complete the rest of the phone number, last two digits
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: eight zero, and I'm like, every phone number from your
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: that's not my cell phone. It's not my old cell phone,
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: it's not my home phone, it's not my parents house.
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: It was my apartment in Everett, the last two numbers.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: So I figured that out and then I went in
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: and did it in like the pre you know when
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: it pre fills. Yeah, it was my original address. Wow,
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: they keep that stuff. Then on Amazon. I assume Beth
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: is like a prime member and you Amazon boxes like
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: that's not the last listen, come in like left and right.
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: It hasn't been thirty years between Amazon purchases and the
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: plough House skills. Just paul Amazon purchases. Wow, she's got
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: you covered. Yeah. Yeah, she got mad because she goes
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: she didn't pay for shipping, did you? I was like
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: no time. No. I was like, okay, because we don't
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: pay for shipping. All right? The prime members Yeah, what's
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: the prime membership? Now? Like one hundred and fifty? I
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: don't know. Five five passive. I've got to have it now, right,
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: I have it now? You want to watch football on Thursdays?
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: Five five past five hundred is the ticket. Hut Line
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: web radio at pagris dot com is the email address.
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: Let's get to the caller. It was. He tiptoed into it.
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: He did, he was he was a little afraid. Don't
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: be afraid. I know they had Amazon back then. He
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: just threw that out there. Yeah, uh all right, computers
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: did they have those? That's what I was thinking. Right,
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: Let's go to while Elder, North Carolina. That's fact. Yeah,
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: Like I said, I like ya argument and like stout
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: and everything, but I still would have offersive guys then
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: defensive a guy and if you trained on under mc Daniels,
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: Like I said, it can't be no worse than what
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: it is now. He can't be Yeah, yeah, Nick with Kayley, Yeah,
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: I would have did it from from the jump. He
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: was the greatest coach and he you know that from
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: the team. I know, I know you want your boy,
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: but that's your boys, not it's a specialty. That's not
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: a specialty. So I wouldn't level would have did that.
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: So I'm next, y'all question, does everybody thinking that Bill
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: O'Brien gonna come to New England next year trying to
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: be the old team? What if you get a coaching
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: job he's in college or the pros didn't What happened
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: to that idea? Yeah, that's not a good idea. Somebody else, Yeah,
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: you're I don't know. I think he stays anyone like
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: who like anyone? I think he stays. Apparently the bars
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: if you've coached seven years offense, you're are guys. No,
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: But I think it's a I think the larger point
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: that I'll take away from Eldred's call is what if
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: Bill Bill O'Brien gets a hit grin and you don't
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: have a Belichick Tree offensive coordinator guy to think What
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: do you think he would do if Bill Bill O'Brien
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: is not the the offensive coordinixt year, what do you
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: think he would do? I hope that he would find
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: another offensive coordinator. I think it's mad Patrician. No, I
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: think I think you're right. I think that's what would happen.
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: You would fail experiment again. I think you could get
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: another assistant. Oh, I know you, I know, I'm just
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: saying I think that what what happened is that Patricia
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: would still be holding the same position he does now,
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: but maybe you get him more experienced assistant, like a
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: couple of years ago when they brought a jet fish
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: for example, or somebody like that that that's been around
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: the block, but not necessarily making him the offensive coordinator
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: by a title. But the Bill O'Brien thing, that's the
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: biggest thing to me with the Bill. Everybody just assumes
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: that Bill O'Brien wants to come back, like I am
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: assuming that he would he would come back. But it's
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: a great point. I know nothing as to why. I
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: don't know if you watch. Isn't his family here at all? Yeah?
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: But he might just want to be a head coach
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: somewhere and right or what if the an offensive coordinator
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: job opens up elsewhere in the NFL with a better situation.
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: That was step two. If he might just want to
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: be a head coach, that might not be my avenue
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: to get there. If his if his goal is to
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: be a head coach again at some level of football,
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: then honestly there's no better place than Alabama to that
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: pipeline is is Razor Sharp like you go? Lane Kiffin
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: gets the Old Miss job, Steve Sarkisian gets the job
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: at Texas. You know that that just goes. Didn't Brian
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: Dabile do it too before? So every two years that
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: that offensive coordinator, regardless of if he's coaching up Tua
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: and Mac Jones and DeVante Smith and Jalen Waddle, all
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: the talent he adds around him, he still gets a
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: head coaching job. So if he wants a head coaching job,
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: then I don't know what coming to New England to
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: be the offensive coordinator here does not That's a that's
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: a lateral movement. But what if he says, you know what,
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: I've been a head coach. I don't want to be
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: a head coach. I'm okay with being an OC. Why
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: is he leaving Alabama just to be back in the NFL? Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: And maybe he wants to be closer and you might
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: and maybe he has hopes that maybe when Bill leaves,
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: like you like Matt Patricia for example, like you know,
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: like I'm he goes, I'm sick of getting death threats.
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: I was getting death threats. Like maybe he's like, I'm
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: never gonna be a head coach again. I don't want it.
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: I don't want it. You know, we're about shadow shit now.
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: I don't think he can get it off. But you
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: know that's besides the point. Adam Gaze is a name
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: that I would consider. I would definitely, you know, they're
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: playing them this weekend, and I kind of mentioned it
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: quickly earlier, but I'd be really monitoring the situation in Arizona.
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: If Cliff Kingsbury gets fired, I'd have him on a
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: plane tomorrow. But like what about like you know, we
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: talk about the Big twelve, you know, and how they
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: don't play defense there, and like there seems to be
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: like some good offensive minds in that conference, you know,
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: like it could be somebody we don't we don't even
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: know about, you know, Yeah, I mean I think the
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: question somebody like that. No, my question is just if
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: he would hire somebody he had that like in a
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: big position like this, that has no experience here. That's
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: my that's my question of you know, the Chatochets of
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: the world, the Bill O'Brian's guys that have been here
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: for a long period of time and know how it works.
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: I just if he wasn't willing to go outside the
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: organization and try something different like the Patricia moved to
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: me just signaled a very important thing to him is
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: having somebody that he knows and trusts. Well, that's the
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: thing that why I think if it's not Bill O'Brien,
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: it's gonna be Matt Patrician. Yeah, because he does. He
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: does like hiring from within, you know, he likes to
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: keep it, you know, all inside, like people who speak
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: the same language. I understand it to a degree. I mean,
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: I think now it's been you've been kind of pillaged,
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: and the pipelines are are a mess across the board
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: in terms of you know, who's coaching war. But I
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: don't know. I think there's a couple candidates. I just
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: hope it's somebody. I don't know how you can go
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: back into next season unless they explode in these last
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: five games. I don't know how you Yeah, you're failing now,
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: I mean go back again. Oh we got one more year,
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: run it back in position. Yeah, I think you know. Thanks,
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: Not not to disagree with Eldric or anybody that says this,
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: but just because I agree with Paul that there there's
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: definitely a chance that it is Matt Patricia again next year,
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: helping him by building out the rest of the coaching
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: staff around him, getting an actual offensive line coach off
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: his plate and would make it better, and maybe getting
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: a quarterbacks coach he met. Elder mentioned Adam Gaze, who
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: I think if they made him the offensive coordinator, people
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: would also want to pull their hair out based of
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: how it won in New York and at the end
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: in Miami. But he's at least somebody that's coach quarterbacks before,
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: has a resume doing it in the NFL, has coached
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: Peyton Manning, has coached some you know, quarterbacks in Miami
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: and New York, and maybe not always successfully, but at
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: least he has done it in the past. At this level,
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: you'd be funny as if they hire like Adam Case
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: and uh, he's the offensive assistant. That's what I'm saying. Yeah,
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: you know anything, but yeah, yeah, you know, Evan brought
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: up something a little while ago that you know, like
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: Bill gets criticized. Um, and you know about the situation
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: they're in now because people said, well, Josh mcdails, he
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: wasn't gonna stay forever, and there was no plan. There
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: was no plan, Mike right, there was no plan. And
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: jet Fishes is a name that you throw out there.
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: I wonder if that was quote unquote a plan. Yeah, like,
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: let's bringing this guy. Yeah, let's bring in this guy,
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: make him the quarterbacks coach or haven't worked with the
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: order back at the very least, I don't remember his
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: exact title was. And then maybe you know, two years,
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: three years in the system. If Josh leaves, we have
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: a guy that we feel good about. Stupid Arizona. Yeahlar
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: Melvin's a tennis he'll he'll be back in Hey. I
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: got a cool question really not about the pages, but
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: about just the NFL in general. Why do like teams
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: or quote unquote sources um leak out information that possible
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: was that if they work intern with a team. I'm
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: trying like, for example, like right before the Giants and
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: that when not the Giant Cowboys saying that Odell Beckham pain.
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: Why would they leak out and say something that wrong
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: with us with his medical when he's been to other
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: teams and they didn't really put anything out there. What
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: benefit though the sources get from putting information out there
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: like that nationally? I mean it depends on who the sources.
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: You know, you look get the source and who you know.
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: You look at the information and you say, who benefits
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: from this information? And trying to drum up more interest
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: for the player? I mean it's an agent or you
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: trying to scare off other teams. Yeah, drive down the price. Yeah,
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: there are different ways to look at it. It could
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: be an effort to drive down the price. Uh. It
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: could also be an effort in Dallas. Everything is magnified
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: in Dallas, right, I've heard that. Um, maybe Dallas is saying,
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: don't blame us when we don't sign that, right, Yeah,
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: because he's kind of yeah, it's not there, you know.
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: So that's how Dallas could benefit from leaking that information.
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: I mean, they pulled out all the stops for Odell.
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: They got Luca don Chi coming over to him on
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: the side up. Did you see that MAVs game, Like god,
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: crowd is chanting like the Royals. You know, they got
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: Micah Parsons and Travan Diggs taking him on the high rollers,
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: you know, suite to the Mavericks game. And then if
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: they don't get him, they say, well, our doctor said
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: was so like the Patriots wouldn't necessarily have to put
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: out pr spin if they talk to somebody and didn't
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: sign him. Dallas kind of does, like Jerry Jones really
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: strongly believes in that, you know, because really there's no
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: one there's no way that Dallas should not sign him, right, Jay,
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: it's a native, he's a Native Texan. I believe they
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: are a contender. They have the quarterback in place, they
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: have all the pieces that he wants. He said up
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: multiple times that his dad was a huge Cowboys fan
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: growing up and that's where he wants to be. Ideal
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: Kansas City, Buffalo Dallas. Those to me, those are the
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: three that make a lot of sense. He also has
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: been talking with the Giants, I know, and that to
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: me doesn't make any sense. Yeah, that wouldn't make that.
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: That's the other team that's strongly puss not if you're
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: not catching any passes. He wouldn't catch any passes to
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: Buffalo for O B J. No offense. That's in Dallas,
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: in Texas. That's that's now no good. I sometimes get
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: and guilty Melvin of taking the reports at face value.
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: Sometimes that happens. I know, I always question everything, but
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: sometimes I take it at face value. I wonder if
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: there's any truth to that and he can't be a
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: part of your offense before say the middle of January,
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: Like they were talking on ESPN yesterday, how much you're
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: gonna pay him if you're gonna sign him. You got
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: to sign them for next year. You know, you can't
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: just sign them to So maybe you could play in
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: the divisional round. Yeah, God, a player like that in
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: that situation, Oh, because you at least Yeah, I mean
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: there's possibility if if things didn't work out and all
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: of a sudden, I'm not getting offers anywhere and you
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: found out it was the team right hip of violations
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: and whatnot. That stuff is very hard to prove. Yeah,
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: but yeah, it be an uphill battle, but you could
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: somebody might try to cross that line at something. All right,
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: Thanks Melvin, strictly talk Patriots Lars is in Camp Pendleton.
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: What's up, Lars? Hurrah been a while, thank you for
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: your service, or it's not. Hooray Matt's coming to choke
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: you out right now. Yeah, it's been a while. Hey,
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: I think I owe I'm not sorry Elder an apology.
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: I think I'm was programmed by Paul's show to not
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: appreciate the wide receiver talent enough. But I've always kind
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: of rolled my eyes when Elder's mobbying for uh faster,
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: bigger wide receiver and lasting like decade. But I don't
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: know if it's the Jefferson and Digs back to back
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: and then Hopkins and Adams on the horizon. I guess
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: I just like I haven't bought up a pat that
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: I just couldn't call it then, but just that the
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: league has kind of changed with the topping bide receivers,
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: and I just think about the way the papers have
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: gone about trying to acquire talent to that position, and
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: it's either on the scrappet, you know, like clearance rack,
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: or in the draft and it never seems to work.
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: And I'm just thinking about the Colm people who changed
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: hands last year, and so I have to question one
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: you know, you do you get think like that top
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: end wide receiver would be worth say two history of
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: the receiver suite have acquired over the last couple of years,
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: taking like porn Agalore Parker. Um, So are you saying,
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: like would you rather have Jamar Chase or born in Agalore? Yeah?
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: Is that the question? Like, I mean, like a top
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: end receiver over is that multiple? Yeah? I mean I
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: don't think. I don't even think Fred would say no
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: to that. Fred loves Justin Jefferson. Yeah, right, question. I
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: was going to get other receivers in addition now, but
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: I'm talking about like I guess like the Hollywood Brown,
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: A J. Brown, Parker Hill, you know not Parker An Adams,
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: you know the guy who change hands for for high
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: Craft Capital and are a sign for big money. And
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: I think like if you add up an Angalore and
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: a Parker, they get pretty close to those top twenty
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: receivers the second they've had the second most money in
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: their money. Yeah. Sorry, I thought top production. Yeah, no,
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: not production like resource allocations. Are you look there? I looked.
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: I did a little show prep. There's three teams that
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: have two top twenty five UH reginable value by receivers,
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: and they're all guys you would want any one of them?
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: Uh and lock it in that calf Evans and Godwin
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: and uh, let's see it was oh and Williams an
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: alp on the Chargers. Those those guys are both like
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: twenty million plus a year. So my question would you
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: think one of those like why haven't you traded the
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: first round pick and whatever else back that involved and
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: paid someone twenty five million bucks? And he put a
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: bunch of number three behind that guy. And just with
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: me as career respondent, that took a choir here, I
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: don't Yeah, yeah, the only one in that whole list
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: that he d toled off of all those guys that
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: change hands that I wouldn't necessarily be willing to give
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: the twenty plus million in the first round picked for
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: his Hollywood Brown. I mean, all the rest of those
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: guys A J. Brown and you know Digs and Hollywood Brown.
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: Hopkins is already happening, Hopkins on the roster. So they
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: traded for Hollywood Brown to be their number two. And
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: I'm fine, Like, I think Hollywood Brown's fine player. I
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: just don't put him in that he's not a Yeah,
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: he's not one of those elite receivers. He's a good player.
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: I mean they've they've tried the last few years to
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: kill Harry first round pick. I mean it's just they're
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: getting the wrong guys, you know. I think that's what
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: it is. And part of it is the overall philosophy
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: of the league has changed, and you need those guys.
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: But I still think death is important. I mean, Jamar
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: Chase T. Higgins. I mean, you know, like you need,
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: you need good by probably have the best wide receiver
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: corps in football. And it also gets easier maybe miamis, yeah,
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: but it also gets easier on those guys when you
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: have that top guy and all the attentions going to them,
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: and now they're getting matchups and you know so I
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: mean would Agalore or Bourne or Myers or any the
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: guys that they have in the roster now look better
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: with of course, and so they just have to continue
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: to invest in that resource. And I mean the offensive
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: line is certainly a priority this offseason. I would say
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: linebacker is certainly a priority, and I would just say
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: wide receiver continues to be a priority. You're gonna have
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: major turnover there. I have no problem investing multiple draft
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: picks in that I'm terrified a free agency though, but
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: I think twenty twenty one did me wrong. And you know,
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: because I don't think there's been I mean, there's been
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: a lot of high impact trades, but I'm not sure
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: that it's been the wide receivers. I think you're looking
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: for guys like the Patriots, God like Corey Davis, good player,
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: you know. And I think that was a good move
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: for the Jets because it gave them a veteran to
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: go with their young guys. Yeah, you know, and if
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: they could get a quarterback, and you know, I'm not
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: necessarily sold on Mike f and White yet Garrett Wilson is,
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: but you know, you get Garrett Wilson, Elijah with a
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: with a veteran, and Corey Davis that can work. But
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: most of those got like Kenny Galladay, he's been well,
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: that's why for that giant. So we're talking about this
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: earlier too, pre agency guys that are going to be
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: free agents in twenty twenty four, right, because a lot
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: of these right so that those are the guys that
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: get disgruntled because their negotiations for their new contracts aren't
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: going well. And eventually they ask out right. So a
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: couple of those guys are like te Higgins is going
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: to be a twenty twenty four free agent or scheduled
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: to Jerry Judy is scheduled to be a twenty twenty
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: four free agent. So I don't know if those names
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: necessarily are in the A. J. Brown category, but I
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: think the point of has the lead changed? Yeah? Absolutely,
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: I mean you pull up the thinks no, And this
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: is I think a big problem about what's going on
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: right now with this team. You pull up the AFC
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: standings right now. I'll just run through them quickly. Buffalo,
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: Stefon Digs, Kansas City, Travis Kelsey, Baltimore, Mark Andrews, Tennessee
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: somehow does it right? But they had AJ Brown and
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: then they traded away, and then their gym gets fired
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: because he traded AJ Brown, Cincinnati, Jamar Chase, Miami, Tyree
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: kill Jalen Waddle and how the Jets who have Garrett Wilson,
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: who is a problem. So every single one of these
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: teams you can point to it. I think with Tennessee
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: you point to the running back and you can say
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: they have a stud weapon, they have a superstar weapon
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: that on Tuesdays when you get into your game plan meetings,
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: you have to decide how are we going to defend
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: this guy? Right? And I was doing some early Raiders Preppers,
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: reading some of their writers, and they have seen a
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: lot of their run game success. They're third in the
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: league right now, an EPA on the ground and I
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: was looking into why that is that's been and stuff
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: like that. And they've seen more too high safety shells
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: than any team in the league because Davante Adams demands
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: the safety attention. So now all of a sudden they
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: have lighter boxes and now Josh Jacob's got all sorts
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: of room to run great, So it's great. These are
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: the chess matches that it's not just about the production,
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: is my point. It's also about what it does, what
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: it allows you to do and right, you know, and
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: something you said I think yesterday, if not it was
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: last week, that really resonates too. Like That's why I asked,
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: do you think build thinks that it's changed? And a
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: lot of people do. Remember on the draft shows when
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: they made the aj Brown trade, and you know, we
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: were all like, you know, what, you think the Patriots
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: would ever make it trade? Like that and we all
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: said no, And I think that they would be the opposite.
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: And I think I don't know if you said it yesterday,
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: but like the Titans move that was so Patriots, Yeah,
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: and never made that point about John Robinson taking a
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: page right out of the Patriots playbook. So like to
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: you a point, Mike, keep trying in the draft, keep
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: trying in the draft so they can trade him after
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: the third year when he got When the guy wants
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: to get paid, like Deebo Samuel wanted to get paid,
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: they paid him. Terry McLaurin wanted to get paid, they
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: paid him, you know, a J. Brown. They ended up
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: moving him. But like, I'm not sure that I think
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: the Patriots would be in we're going to move him,
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: yeah camp, rather than you know they would they would
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: just sit there and say, well, who do we have
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: on our list? Now? I think that Treylon Burke's kid.
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: I think he can play. Yeah, I think I think
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: they may have made the best of a bad situation.
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: You know. Unfortunately he's been banged up a little bit
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: and seeing an out of the lineup. But I've seen, yeah,
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: I've seen something. I've seen some flashes though. Yeah, I
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: liked him, and I just sa, I mean, is it
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: fair to Mac Jones? Will we ever get a true
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: sense of who Mac Jones is if he doesn't get
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: a chance to play with a guy like that? You know,
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: I mean it's it's just asking a lot. It's asking
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: a lot for him to to elevate a team. You know.
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: I wonder if Bill still thinks if I could get
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: someone this show told me they didn't have any concerns
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: about the offense. I just but it does go back
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: to Fred's thing, because when when the Cardinals and the
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: and uh and Vance Joseph, who's having the time of
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: his life when he uh, when they when they get
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: in on on Monday and they start to turn the
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: page to New England and they look at New England's offense.
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: Who on the Patriot's offense? Are you circling like we
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: gotta take this guy out? That's exactly what we want.
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: They have no idea. And that's the argument. They got
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: this depth and they can spread it around and you
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: know you don't take But the problem is is that
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: the one guy that maybe you in the passing game
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: is like Jacoby, because that's just who they target a lot, right,
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: so the Jacoby's the guy that you need to take out.
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: But if you have a good, good enough corner, you
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: don't necessarily to help to Jacoby, right, Like you know,
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: Byron Murphy's a solid cover guy and he's not going
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: getting yet. Right, So it's the same thing as last year.
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: You know, they put an extra guy in the box.
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: Now you can't run the football because you're running into
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: seven and eight man boxes all the time. You have
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: nobody on the outside that gives anybody any fear. And
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: you just look at how all these teams that have
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: these number one guys, just how defenses have to change
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: their entire game plan, like we're talking about DeAndre Hopkins,
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: Like you just have to change the entire game plan,
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: your entire strategy to cover that guy, and it opens
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: up things elsewhere. And that's why the Raiders have had
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: so much success running the football. Do you think that
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: they believe that Tykwon Thornton could be a number one
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: think that was part of it is that they think
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: that a role in the whole offense, right, Like, oh,
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: he's you know, our take the top off the defense guy,
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: and Jacoby is our you know, high volume targets. You know,
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: intermediate guy, and that's not that's not game breaking, Like,
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: that's not don't want that guy. Yeah, they'd rather have
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: this situation where and they're all pieces of the pub
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: And how many more of these kind of seasons do
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: you need before you I just think you need to
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: be so elite at quarterback to do it that way,
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: to like to you guys point like you always say,
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: like what would mac Jones be if he had that? Like, well, yeah,
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: I think most quarterbacks are like that, like they need
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: to have other guys help elevate their game as opposed
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: to Brady elevating everybody around him. Yeah, I mean, you know,
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: in that way, at least in theory. I mean I
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: can see, like, you know why you would say, well,
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: it's really hard to get a one A, but if
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: we had three or four really good bees, we could
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: probably make it work with a good quarterback. Yeah, I
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: get it. It makes sense. Like I said, I don't
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: think that the Patriots wide receivers stink. I just think
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: they have a bunch of complimentary pieces, and I think
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: it's hard to do it just that way. Like if
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: you if this group would look a lot better, not
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: you know, breaking any news and I think with a
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: stud to put everybody down a pair. And I think
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: has Evan read off those things? I mean tight ends too.
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: It's not just like that game breaking wide receiver that
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: you know it's it's it can be a I'm just
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: thinking about the Cardinals a little bit. I know we'll
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: talk about them more probably tomorrow, but like you're talking
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: about the defensive coaches and how they're gonna look at
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: the Patriots, I wonder if, like does Clip Kingsbury look
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: and say, Justin Jefferson, Stefan Diggs, I got one of those.
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: Yeah I can. I can move the ball and score
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: points in this game. Yeah, you know, like just look
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: at the last couple of weeks and they weren't able
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: to take away the number one. Why would you think
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: they're gonna completely eliminate Hopkins. I just think two in
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: Miami is such a great example of all of this
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: because Tah is not a physical marvel, right, Like he's
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: he's not Josh Allen, He's not Justin Herbert. But what
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: TA is good at or all these like secondary passer
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: traits like anticipation, accuracy. You know, I am manipulation, coverage, manipulation,
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: and I think that the guy here is good at
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: those things too. But in order to have an offense
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: that is predicated on those things, it has to be
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: built a certain way, and Miami built it perfectly for
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: to a great play caller. Tyree killed Jalen Waddle and
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: so he's it amplified all those traits of his and
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: it doesn't ask him to playmake outside the pocket or
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: throw sixty yard bombs all the time to create big plays,
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: and it allows him to do things that he's good
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: at and amplify those things. And I think on Thursday
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: night when Mac threw that interception that was an interception
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: but they got the call from Jordan Poyer, that was
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: a perfect example of the play broke down. It was
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: a second reaction or extended play. And Hunter Henry does
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: flash open down field for half a beat, but he
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: just doesn't have the arm and the physical tools to
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: throw across his body on the move and beat the
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: safety there with a good throw and it gets intercepted.
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: So in order to amplify things that Mac Jones is
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: good at, you have to go with the model like Miami,
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: and you have to make those secondary passer traits amplified
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: by having good playmakers around him. Brendan asked a simple
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: question at web radio at Patriots dot Com. He says,
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: what would the Patriots record be this year if the
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: team had prime Drew Bledsoe? Will you laugh? I would
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: actually thinking, I think they'd be better. Of course they
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: would be yeah, oh yeah, Drew would hang in there.
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: He'd be firing balls down the field. Teon Thorne, probably
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: have like four or five already. Yeah, like he would
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: make that pass you were just talking about, because he's
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: got the arms. They'd be better, There's no question about it. Now,
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: I don't think they'd be a threat because he would
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: throw too many picks. Well he's not. So then I was,
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: I was thinking of that last thing, and then I
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: was thinking, Paul, Paul, if you as if you had
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: to choose, if you had to choose between in the
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: Patriots Hall of Fame Bledsoe or Richard Seymour, who who
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: would get in? Only one can get in Seymour? What
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: I would say, Seymour, that's an argument for Drew Bledsoe. See,
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: I would say, bled Did I miss it wrong? No,
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: I'm I think making fun of me. No, I'm asking
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: is there an argument for Drew Bledsoe. I think in
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: terms in terms of like importance to the franchise and
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: all that stuff. To see you you put far more.
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: I mean that's the thing about being a Hall of
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: Fame voter, which Fred and I are. Um, it's you
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: you can have. And Fred is very much um you know,
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: fabric of the of the the organization, like his impact
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: on the team, and you know that kind of stuff.
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: And I mean you can make it the best player.
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: You can make an argument that that Drew Bledsoe is
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: every bit as important as any player you know beyond
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: Tom Brady who's ever played for the team. You could
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: make that arch also argument. But the coin in two
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: thousand and one without Richard Seymour. So no, no, no,
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: I don't know my answer. I don't know how you answer.
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: I'm the biggest bred so Bledsoe honk that you could
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: find a sitting in the other room. But I just
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: go I just go by talents, like I just think
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: Seymour was a better player. Fred goes by more than
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: just talent. And I think Fred makes a good argue.
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: It resonates for me as a kid in the nineties
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: who can specifically remember the day that Drew Bledsoe came,
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: became a part of that day. I became a season
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: tended holder, you know, like it was hope, we finally
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: had one of those guys like that. That's the day
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: I jumped on board for us. For some of the
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: you know generations just behind mine, it's two thousand and one.
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: That's you know, they that is what got their intention locally.
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: But you don't find the tay Law theory that they
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: would have won the Super Bowl on a one but
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: without Richard Withdrew babe. Just but the reason why they
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: won the Super Bowl No. One was because of Richard
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: Seymour than like, you know, well the game, you're talking
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: about the game itself, I'm talking about the season to
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: get there. I don't think they would have gotten to
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: the super Bowl if Drew coach quarterback the whole way.
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: I just don't. I just don't know. I don't know.
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: I think they would have been Okay, I don't think
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: they would have been a trend to the franchise. How
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: is anything more important than two thousand and one like that,
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: that's that's the pinnacle, Like two thousand and one is
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: what got the whole thing started. Yeah, before that, they
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: were they were. We know what they were, so it
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: pretty good. I think we're gonna get nineties. We're gonna
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: get nineties defensive right now. No, but they weren't bad.
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: I mean I think it's it was I kind of
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: I usually hesitate, and I balked at like they wouldn't
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: have you know, like I used to hear people that, like,
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: you know, uh, they wouldn't have gotten to the super
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: Bowl and ninety six without Terry Glenn. Like, I mean,
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: Terry Glenn had a phenomenal rookie season. How do I
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: know they wouldn't have gotten a super Bowl? I don't know.
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: Maybe someone else would have caught ninety passes. It's funny
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: because when you get to the playoffs, like how many
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: touchdowns that they actually get in the playoffs in two
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: thousand and one, I mean, Drew through one of them,
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: Brady through one or two others. I mean there were
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: maybe two. Brady scored one. I'm pretty sure they had
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: the same amount of touchdown passes in the playoffs. And
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: but the touchdown of David Patton and the Super Bowl
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: is an awesome throw. So it was the touchdown play.
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: It was the same play that Drew through the exact
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: same play. Well they turned it up before. Yeah, there's
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: actually a great clip. I lost control of my bodily
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: functions on this on that on that four play stretch.
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: The Pro Bowl Skills Challenge they like, used to interview
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: the quarterbacks, and the quarterbacks used to break down their
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: favorite play in their offense. And yeah, I have it
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: to clip somewhere um of Brady breaking down the play
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: that he threw the touchdown to David Patton too. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: that's right, fing forge banana fifty. So it is so
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: the little motion that he goes in they do call
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: it a fing motioning. I don't know if they call
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: it fing motion anymore, because who the heck knows what
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: they call anything now, But that's that's what it was.
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: This guy goed that way. Brian and I did a
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: thing when we still had the paper. I I bet
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: you Bryan could rattle it off like verbatim zero slot
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: right three thirty five max based throwback chip flare. Yeah,
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: that's of course, but that's of course. Uh L from
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: Wisconsin says, too long of a break between the game
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: and the shows was a rough weekend anyway. I have
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: a few things that like the thoughts on won the
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: field goal at the end of the Vikings game was
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: just embarrassing the Bills game. I think the Bills game.
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: The Bills game. Kicking the field goal at the end
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: of the Bills game. I'm gonna say, make guess. So
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: someone said, who is Mack to question the coaches? He
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: hasn't earned it. Now. I'm not a Mac guy by
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: any means, but he does have a year more experience
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: in an NFL offense than the coordinator. Fair point, who
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: is he? Bill said at the start of the season
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: that he should be held accountable. I think he can
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: say that because he knows he won't be You can
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: question all you want, but if there is zero threat
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: to his job, then it doesn't matter. You've all said it.
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: He doesn't have to worry about losing his job. In
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: that case, he can do whatever he wants and will
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: not be held accountable. The media asking questions isn't the
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: same Agree with that part. And I actually heard someone
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: say something along those lines this morning that it's easy
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: for Bill to say, you put it on me because
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: he knows he's not gonna get fired. He's got six
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: Super bowls. He's not going anywhere you don't care. I
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: think I think it was Tom Curran's podcast. I was
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: listening to a little of this morning. I think it
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: came up with him in Florio, your boy Florio, not
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: to defend my fellow media down here, but ask questioning
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: Bill about like I get that a little bit of people.
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: I think the questions are there, Yeah, people being like,
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: why doesn't the media, like you know, come after Bill
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: about this whole thing? And it's like other than like,
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: you know, fans and media getting off on the fact
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: that they challenge Bill, you know, at the press conference.
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: None of us make decisions around here, like it doesn't
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: actually make a difference whether or not we And that's
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: why I think the email is right. It's that doesn't count, right.
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: But I do think that we talked again before you
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: came on EV about the the back and forth with
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: Phil Perry and Bill yesterday, and you and I were
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: sitting there, and you know, I didn't think it was confrontational.
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: I thought it was just a very professional back and
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: forth and he's asking Phil's asking him more or less
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: why is it like this and why is it too late?
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: And why you know, what is the differences between as
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: his example, going in a different direction down the stretch
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: of eighteen to now, and I thought it was good
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: back and forth. I didn't. I didn't necessarily think it
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: was like whoa, he really held his feet to the fire. No,
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: it's just good football questions. And I think that you've
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: gotten now. They've won everything for twenty plus years. So
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: as much as I make fun of the media, I'm
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: really only kind of doing it half in jest. This
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: is one of the rare times where there's reasons every
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: week to go in there and ask him tough questions,
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: I think, and I think they have. I think they have,
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: but but but the emails point is right. The only
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: person that can really hold him accountable is Robert Craft.
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: Sure you know, um Chris with a tia and and
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: writes in not really. Tom E. Curran said definitively on
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: his podcast that BILLYO was not coming back here to
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: be what he was in twenty eleven, just an offensive coordinator.
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: It would require a guarantee that he would have a
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: shot to replace Belichick, the same guarantee that Josh was
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: looking for before he left Vegas. I don't know if
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: either of those are true. It's it's interesting, though because
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: walk me through this. You guys are smarter than me,
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: right sometimes about that. So Robert Craft goes to Billy
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: O'Brien and he says, you will have every opportunity to
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: replace Bill Belichick, even when the day comes that Bill
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: hangs him up. This is a good situation. This is
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: what you want. So Bill comes in and he's the
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: offensive Billy O'Brien comes in, he's the offensive coordinator, and
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: he's has this in his mind like you're only hit
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: for another couple or what am I going to listen
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: to you? Fun? I'm gonna set these things up the
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: way I want him because you're gonna be gone soon.
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: Owner told me that's that's something that makes sense to people. No, again,
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: you guys are smarter than me. Tell me how that works.
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: It doesn't I mean, does it? And does that come
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: from Robert like I mean like to say, negotiate that
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: kind of thing, because I mean, I guess I kind
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: of feel like it would be Bill hiring coaches, right
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: and reaching out to coaches and discussing what the setup
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: would be. And you know, if anyone were to get
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: one of those weird what are the like assistant head
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: coaches Sometimes like your random guys associate head coach on
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: the side, Like, what does that mean? I don't even
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: Dan Campbell in New Orleans before you got the Dante
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: was just like a reliable guy who if things go south,
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: you can, you know, have them fill in. Yeah, And
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: I'm not saying that it's impossible that not yet. I also,
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: you know, I heard them talking about this on the
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: radio yesterday. I think it's it's actually reasonable one of
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: your shows, one of my shows. Um, if if Bill
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: O'Brien's gonna wait around for Bill Belichick to call him,
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: he could be waiting for a long time, like Robert
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: might have to make the call. Like, I just, I
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: just I don't get the I get the reason why
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: everybody wants Bill O'Brien here. I still am trying to
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: figure out why Bill O'Brien would want to be here.
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: That's the piece of it that I can't wrap my
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: head around. Because on top of what Paul is saying,
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: I would also say that one of the things with
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: Belichick is that he surrounds himself by people that oha
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: gret that gratitude to him, right, like, you know, people
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: that he can that he has a clear hierarchy of
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: control over and everything that you hear about what happened
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: in Houston was that Bill O'Brien wasn't taken anything from
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: anybody down in Houston, And I just I look at
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: that situation and I think for Bill O'Brien and for
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: for Bill Belichick, that is asking for those two guys
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: to butt heads, right, Like when they get into the
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: point when they get into the draft room in April
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: and and they're they're up on the in the first
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: round and U and Billy O'Brien says to Bill, you
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: know this Addison kid from USC wide receiver can really play,
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: Like I think this kid's going to be a great
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: player in the league. And then and then Bill and
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: takes a nose tackle from you know, Kent State, Like
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: these are the these are the types of things that
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: are going to I don't think Bill O'Brien's gonna take that, like, right,
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: you know, Bill O'Brien's not that kind of guy. What
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: did Brady used to call him teapot? Right? Yep? So
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: he was it was accurate too, right, So that's not
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: gonna go over Well. There's also just an element of
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: this that, like you had Josh here for X amount
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: of years, then billy O came, Then you got Josh back.
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: Now we want to bring billy O back. It's like,
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: at some point, can we just break the cycle and
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: start to find something new and maybe build something that
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: doesn't like have to connect to somebody who was here.
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: Davan's point about what billy O wants um, is it
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: out of the roma possibility that he gets a head
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: coach offer? No, no, I saw bids. You know, Bernard
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: has been kind of tweeting about this. He's he thinks back.
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: He said, like you know, he was putting out there
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: like you know, the Purdue job I guess just opened up.
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: But you know, would he be intrigued by a head coach,
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: by that kind of head coach rom which one which
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: which brom coach Brown which just called him coach coach
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: called good job. He's got tremendous potential. He sorry upside
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: he has upside um. But what if he what if
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: the Carolina Panthers want to hire Bill ob or Arizona
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: or you know whatever. And I don't know, Like I
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: looked at his resume from AFAR. I think this flaws
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: with everybody. Okay, but he took over what I think
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: is probably the worst possible situation you could ever take
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: over at Penn State, and he made Christian Hackenberg look
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: like a legitimate prospect, right, Yeah, no, but I mean
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: it was it wasn't the fluke. He played great that
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: first year, and I didn't play as good in the
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: second year, but he looked really good. Then he goes
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: to Houston and look what's happened in Houston since. And
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: it wasn't just because of Deshaun Watson. You could say, well,
- 1:42:37Speaker 1: he had Deshaun Watson. He was great, that they went
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: to the playoffs, that they won a playoff game with
- 1:42:41Speaker 1: like t J. Yates, like they had. He built a
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: good team. Now to Evans point about like the power,
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: I think the power was a problem. I think there
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: was all kinds of things going on with what's the
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: guy that Rick Smith was that back then the GM.
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: He kind of pushed him out, took over control, made
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: some bad was then you know, little Finger gets in. Yeah,
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: I'm glad you said that, though, Pau because it was
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: but a job in Houston was pretty good, I know,
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: and he's always been. I'm so glad you said that
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: because I was just thinking that a few minutes ago
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: when we were talking about him, and I'm like, there's
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: this impression that things were a disaster for Billing and
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: what a joke he was. And I'm like, what am
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: I misremembering, because it seems like he drafted a lot
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: of you know, DeAndre Hopkins, this talented guys, JJ Watt,
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: talented guys. They were always kind of in the playoffs.
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: They were in the playoffs. They were never a threat
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: to go to the super Bowl, but they were always
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: a threat to beat you. Always. They were a little like,
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: you know, they were a high to me, a higher
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: end version of what Tennessee has been the last few years. Yeah, Like,
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: I think they've been very dangerous, but probably not a
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: super Bowl team like Arian Foster. Yeah, I think he
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: was a good coach now and my biased absolutely really
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: liked the guy. Had a lot of good conversations with him,
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: loved running into him at the combined the year that
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: he made fun of me and Andy for finding ways
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: to be negative was one of my favorite moments ever.
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: He's like, you know, my my wife, every my whole
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: family is still back doing that. I see these things
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: of you, like, I don't know how you do it. Man,
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: we win to Super Bowl every year, and you find
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: a way. And I said to him, I explained to
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: my goal, you have to understand where it starts from.
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: These are all issues quote unquote that may or may
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: not allow us to host the AFC Championship games, right Like,
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: That's where I'm coming at with my criticism. Not like
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: these guys don't know what they're doing. I don't know
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: how they're even gonna win a game. It's how are
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: we going to host the AFC Championship games so we
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: can win another Super Bowl? And he's like, I guess
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: I could see that. I'm checking out now, coordinated the
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: but he he has rabbit ears. Oh he has rabbit ears,
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: absolutely and in a temper right Like, it seems like
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: that's a tough combination. That argument walking with with Brady
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: on the sideline in Washington was legend. Yeah, that's the
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: high top fade Shutter is in Manchester, UK. Whoever you
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: think is the best OC and DC the Patriots have
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: had over the last twenty two years. Cornell, Josh, if
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: you plug them into with this roster, how different do
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: you think the record would be? It's impossible? Yeah, Like
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: that's impossible. I don't know the best Well, all I
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: know is that last year they were ten and seven
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: in the top ten offense with Josh McDaniels as the
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: offensive coordinators. I know if you count Josh as the
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: best one, I don't know if you want to give
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: that to Charlie Weiss or Bill O'Brien, But I know
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: what the product was last year with the better offensive coordinator. Yeah,
- 1:45:26Speaker 1: and I would definitely say Romeo Cornell, But I just like,
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: how do you know what the impact would be on
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: the same player as playing with a different coordinator? Right?
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: I wrote it at the beginning of the season that
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: Bill is the reason I had hoped this team would
- 1:45:38Speaker 1: make the playoffs, but his roster and coaching structure is
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: why I feared this team would be failing. This coaching
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: structure has failed. The sooner it's fixed, the better, But
- 1:45:47Speaker 1: it has to be done with the right pieces, not
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: just the available pencil twiddlers. I have similar fears for
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: the short and long term future of this roster. There
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: is the odd bright spark, but little backbone. Yeah. I
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: just I think for the optics of it all, depending
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: on how the season ends, I'm not expecting any dramatic
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: change in like what they do in these last five
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: games to redefine what we think about the team overall.
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: But I just think they for the optics of it.
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: You have to do something on offense because people are
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: going to have the pitchforks out and interest is going
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: to be waning, and a way to get people back
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: in is to invest in the offense and bring it,
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: bring an established kind of guy in that we can,
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: you know, maybe Trumpet a little bit. It's hard for
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: me to see them bringing back Mattie p and it
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: going well in any in any sense of the word.
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: Jack and and arbaces John Jeff Braun took the head
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: coaching job at Louisvilleville. Did I say Jeff first? Brian?
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: Probably Jeff. I don't know that that makes more sense
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: because I wouldn't. I thought he did a decent job
- 1:46:48Speaker 1: at Purdue. They're not overly talented Purdue, and they find
- 1:46:51Speaker 1: a way to win seven eight games every year. Williams
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: and Philam, what's up, Willie? That's going on? Spring? How
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: are you doing good? Okay? Um? Oh yeah, I heard
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: you're a little smart. Common yesterday, Fred and Mike Sometimes
- 1:47:04Speaker 1: the old the cops Uh, hope, thank the cops getting
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: after the Will. That's what he gets. What never keep?
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: Look how you throwing up against When I got the podcast,
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: what y'all? I do continue listening. So I'm like, okay,
- 1:47:19Speaker 1: I'm listening to God was for y'all. I don't never
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: say anything bad Will. Yeah, I know you don't. I
- 1:47:27Speaker 1: know you know what you want to go The fred
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: don't care France is literally rid. My question is, um,
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: I guess y'all were touching on the receivers and whatnot.
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: I mean, how many times have you seen Bill at
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: the podium talking about Justin Jefferson. Oh he's a problem, Uh,
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: DeAndre Howkins, Stefan Diggs, they all problems and whatnot. I mean,
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: these are all receivers you could have had. I'm at
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: least one of them, you know, one out of the
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: group of basics. But you didn't. You didn't you didn't
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: want to go get You just refuse to get them
- 1:48:03Speaker 1: for whatever stubborn reason. And the thing about it is,
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: it's not your money. At the end of the day,
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: that kept my angel. So what you're worried about, it's
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: about cap all. Go get the go, get the go,
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: Get the talent yet so we could see what Mett
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: can do. You know what I mean, if it has
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: to be perfect, so be it, make it perfect in
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: it's almost like he doesn't want to deal with that
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: strong personality in the locker room, you know that that
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: the diva, the guy that you know just won't listen
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: to me. You know. I think it's cap allocation, though,
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: I think I think it really is. I think that
- 1:48:34Speaker 1: they don't want to have one guy that's taken up
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: thirty million dollars of the cap. They'd rather have three
- 1:48:40Speaker 1: guys that take up thirty million dollars of the cape.
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: That's that's just their mindset on it. Okay, but look
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: at Okay, I'm still but look at look at thirty
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: million does before you don't Oh, I'm not disagreeing with
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: you at all. I think I think everyone's just trying
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: to give you what he thinks. Bill's philosophy. They would
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: they want to in their mind, they've always thought of it.
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: Roster building is building one through fifty three, right, Like,
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: it's not just building the top ten, right. And I
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: think you hear a lot of the time, oh like
- 1:49:10Speaker 1: you know, this isn't mad and this isn't fantasy football
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: or whatever, because because they don't want to build a
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: roster that is top heavy, they want to build a
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: depth roster with good depth and stuff like that. Over
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: the years, you know, uh, they've had more players on
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: their roster making more than a million dollars and like
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: any other team in the league, because they really the
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: middle of the pack, right, They're they're like middle depth.
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: They take that really seriously. They want to have good, solid,
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: strong middle class middle class. Thank you. That's what I'm
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: looking for. Okay, one more thing and that's it, and
- 1:49:47Speaker 1: I have to I got to be very honest, all
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: just a side. And I'm gonna say this for the record,
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: If if if the Patriots look like this next season,
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: if Matt Patricia's dear if draft looks horrible in that
- 1:50:01Speaker 1: off season, I mean for you to scy looks just grazy.
- 1:50:04Speaker 1: I'm out. I'm sorry. I'm in a Patriots fan for
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: a long time. I love y'all to death. I'm gonna
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: continue listen to y'all stuff, but I can't. I can't
- 1:50:13Speaker 1: many where you gonna gona. You could take the Eagles,
- 1:50:20Speaker 1: You're in Philly. I like the point though, I thought
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: the same thing yesterday. I just saw the quote about Hopkins,
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: you know, and it's just as good as any player,
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: and I thought the same thing he thought. I'm like, man,
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: you get up there and you're hear him praising these guys,
- 1:50:35Speaker 1: and like, when don't you like to coach some of them? Like,
- 1:50:36Speaker 1: I mean, what was it like when you had Randy Moss?
- 1:50:38Speaker 1: Wasn't that was not pretty fun? Like I can't imagine
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: it's not appealing to him on some level. And I
- 1:50:43Speaker 1: thought he's been a He probably thinks though that, Okay, Yeah,
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: we had Randy Moss and we had to spend a
- 1:50:48Speaker 1: lot of time keeping him in line, and that's just that.
- 1:50:52Speaker 1: That excuse, though, is that's an excuse. I know, but
- 1:50:55Speaker 1: I'm just saying that. That's just I do think it
- 1:50:57Speaker 1: took a lot of time, and I think it was
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: worth it. Yeah, Yeah, it was it worth it for
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: at least a year. Yeah. James Pettigrew, the most interesting
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: Patriots fan of the World, writes in whenever I see
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: Marcus Jones make a play on offense or special teams,
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: I can't help thinking, Man, the third and fifth round
- 1:51:16Speaker 1: picks we're gonna get for trading him are gonna turn
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: into really sucky players down the line. Ouch. Yeah, I
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: actually don't think that, to be honest, I think he's
- 1:51:25Speaker 1: gonna be here for the long run. I think I'll
- 1:51:27Speaker 1: be here for a little while. Yeah, what did I miss?
- 1:51:29Speaker 1: I asked? I asked Bill about him today, and you know,
- 1:51:32Speaker 1: just about how do you kind of divvy up his
- 1:51:34Speaker 1: snaps right between offense, defense and special teams? And uh,
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: you know, how do you kind of go about doing that?
- 1:51:40Speaker 1: And he mentioned Troy Brown Julian Edelman. I think they
- 1:51:44Speaker 1: view Marcus at least so far. We'll see if it sticks,
- 1:51:48Speaker 1: but at least so far, I think they view him
- 1:51:51Speaker 1: in that, in that mold of you know, somebody that
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: can really contribute in all three phases, and I for
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: that reason, he will stay here, right, and he'll never
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: have value at one thing. Look at my big brain, however,
- 1:52:05Speaker 1: necessarily write with Fred's point, I think his value might
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: never be centralized. And also I think that those are
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: the types of guys that they see value in paying
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: because they look at it and say, this guy contributes
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: and every possible same thing. You're a sneaky bad guy. Uh.
- 1:52:25Speaker 1: David and Beth David and Beth to a Bantican to
- 1:52:34Speaker 1: Uh David and Bethleheim. Uh, for you stats guys, for
- 1:52:40Speaker 1: you stats guys. How much time has Mac actually had?
- 1:52:43Speaker 1: How does that time compare to other teams? How do
- 1:52:46Speaker 1: his pressure stats compare to other teams? Please rate the
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: old line, show you work, no peaking, awesome, This is
- 1:52:52Speaker 1: gonna be great, Chevin, what do you got? What do
- 1:52:56Speaker 1: you got? All right? So pressure stats are skewed on
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: this because it all depends on how you know quarterback
- 1:53:04Speaker 1: and control pressure stats to a degree too, right, like
- 1:53:06Speaker 1: quick release, So if you get the ball out, you know,
- 1:53:09Speaker 1: Tom Brady gets the ball out and two point two seconds,
- 1:53:11Speaker 1: so his pressure rate is not very good. But then
- 1:53:14Speaker 1: if you look at their offensive line has actually not
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: been very good this year, just on a per play,
- 1:53:20Speaker 1: you know, per player basis. So is that the quarterback
- 1:53:23Speaker 1: is at the offensive line. So I have a tough
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: time with pressure stats. But I think overall, when you
- 1:53:28Speaker 1: look at this offensive line, they have really struggled, in
- 1:53:32Speaker 1: particular at the tackle position. Trent Brown is for whatever reason,
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: not playing the same level that I think we all
- 1:53:39Speaker 1: think he's capable of playing. He's much better player last year,
- 1:53:42Speaker 1: even for them than he has been this year. And
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: then obviously right tackle has just been a revolving door
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: of nothing. So that has really been to me the
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: biggest issue. If they could keep you know, Andrews Strange
- 1:53:55Speaker 1: and on Windy on the interior, which has been the
- 1:53:57Speaker 1: majority of their snaps as and offense has been with
- 1:53:59Speaker 1: those three guys. Not terrible on the interior, it's not
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: terrible where he's about middle of the pack right now
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: in time to throw, which I think is a really
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: important indicator of overall pressure. Um so his pressure numbers
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: are not terrible, but that's again indicative more so, I
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: would say, and the fact that he does get the
- 1:54:22Speaker 1: ball out quickly and screen past his quick game like
- 1:54:26Speaker 1: that type of stuff is a part of their offense.
- 1:54:28Speaker 1: So some of that is skewed now in terms of
- 1:54:30Speaker 1: like what PF calls pass blocking efficiency, which just studies
- 1:54:34Speaker 1: sacks and pressures allowed by the offensive line, they're they're
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: lower in that category, so they're near the bottom of
- 1:54:41Speaker 1: the league in that category. And then the money quote,
- 1:54:44Speaker 1: how does Mack perform win under pressure? Terrible? So that's
- 1:54:48Speaker 1: that's the telling one. That's the biggest thing I think
- 1:54:51Speaker 1: that stands out about this team Statistically, when I look
- 1:54:55Speaker 1: at their offense right now, Mac Jones per PF is
- 1:55:00Speaker 1: fiftieth fiftieth in passing grade while under pressure, fifty out
- 1:55:06Speaker 1: of fifty one quarter there's thirty two teams. The only
- 1:55:10Speaker 1: quarterback that has graded out worse under pressure happens to
- 1:55:13Speaker 1: play for the New York Jets, Zach Zach Wilson. He
- 1:55:17Speaker 1: is forty fifth in passer rating while under pressure, and
- 1:55:22Speaker 1: his passer rating is so bad. I love this one.
- 1:55:26Speaker 1: His passer rating is so bad that if he just
- 1:55:29Speaker 1: spiked the ball into the ground every time he faced pressure,
- 1:55:33Speaker 1: it would be fire. Then what did occurred to nine
- 1:55:36Speaker 1: point six? Right? His completion rate while under pressure forty
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: three point eight. So this is the type of things
- 1:55:48Speaker 1: that you see with Mac. And when he's kept clean
- 1:55:51Speaker 1: and the players talk about all the time and he's
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: kept cleaning, great quarterback, he can get us the ball.
- 1:55:55Speaker 1: You know my argument, quarterbacks, everyone everybody else, right, So
- 1:56:01Speaker 1: that's that's been the big statistical thing, and especially when
- 1:56:05Speaker 1: you look at his pressure stats last year to this year,
- 1:56:08Speaker 1: it's quite a precipitous drop off in that respect. All right,
- 1:56:13Speaker 1: listen to me, Okay, all right, Bridgetone is the official
