- 0:16Speaker 1: Excited to visit today with Julie from the Saint Francis House.
- 0:20Speaker 1: They have their twenty third annual dinner and auction coming
- 0:22Speaker 1: up October fifth. We're going to talk more about that
- 0:25Speaker 1: in a minute, but first Julie, let's talk about the
- 0:27Speaker 1: Saint Francis House. For anybody that doesn't quite know what
- 0:29Speaker 1: you guys do. What do you do at the Saint
- 0:31Speaker 1: Francis House.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Well, first of all, thanks for having me on.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Always grateful to be able to share the message of
- 0:37Speaker 3: the Saint Francis House. We provide transitional housing for individuals
- 0:43Speaker 3: who are homeless in our community.
- 0:46Speaker 2: So people say, well, what does transitional mean.
- 0:49Speaker 3: We work very closely with our emergency shelters, Bishop Dudley
- 0:52Speaker 3: Hospitality House in the Union Gospel Mission because they are
- 0:55Speaker 3: considered emergency housing typically sixty days or less.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Saint Francis House is.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Where they can take that next step to stay sixty
- 1:04Speaker 3: days and longer. So here at the house, we have
- 1:08Speaker 3: people who stay sometimes that average is about six to
- 1:13Speaker 3: nine months. We have others that stay a year, and
- 1:15Speaker 3: a couple times we've had some people stay over a
- 1:18Speaker 3: year due to the lack of affordable and safe housing
- 1:21Speaker 3: in our community. So we have people that, as I said,
- 1:25Speaker 3: come from the two emergency shelters. We have people who
- 1:28Speaker 3: will walk in off the street. Some people are referred
- 1:30Speaker 3: from the hospitals. We have a strong relationship working with
- 1:34Speaker 3: individuals who are from the probation area as well as
- 1:38Speaker 3: the Southdakota Department of Corrections.
- 1:40Speaker 1: I love that. So let's talk about the capacity. How
- 1:43Speaker 1: much room do you have and are you typically full?
- 1:45Speaker 3: Well. When we moved into this building six years ago,
- 1:50Speaker 3: we had it planned for one hundred and twenty and
- 1:53Speaker 3: we've expanded to have one hundred and sixty eight beds
- 1:56Speaker 3: now because some of our rooms have added bunk, and
- 2:01Speaker 3: right now we are averaging around that ninety two percent,
- 2:06Speaker 3: which the minute I get off the phone with you,
- 2:09Speaker 3: it could change drastically and we could be at complete capacity.
- 2:14Speaker 3: Just the number of people who are coming in is
- 2:18Speaker 3: growing tremendously. We have right now just looking at individuals
- 2:23Speaker 3: wanting to come from the prison system because we know
- 2:26Speaker 3: that they're at over capacity. We have over two hundred
- 2:29Speaker 3: and forty four individuals who are currently in prison waiting
- 2:34Speaker 3: for the parole date that want to parole to the
- 2:35Speaker 3: Saint Francis House.
- 2:37Speaker 1: We moved to this area twenty years ago and we've
- 2:40Speaker 1: watched two falls grow a tremendous amount in that amount
- 2:43Speaker 1: of time. Now, as a community grows, there are some
- 2:44Speaker 1: growing pains that happen as well, But during that time
- 2:47Speaker 1: you have been able to help so many people right
- 2:51Speaker 1: there at the Saint Francis House.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Yes, most certainly, as we look at we did an
- 2:57Speaker 3: overview of the ten year snapshot, looking at from twenty
- 3:01Speaker 3: fifteen to twenty twenty four, and then most recently we've
- 3:04Speaker 3: added to the most recent dates. When you look at
- 3:08Speaker 3: one our recidivism rate, typically, we've said at about eighty
- 3:12Speaker 3: six percent of the individuals that come from the correctional arena,
- 3:16Speaker 3: the judicially impacted individuals do not return to present eighty
- 3:20Speaker 3: six percent. That's a pretty huge number compared to what
- 3:24Speaker 3: the state, the Self Code Department Corrections reports on their
- 3:28Speaker 3: website of about fifty percent of people who are not
- 3:31Speaker 3: affiliated with Saint Francis House. When you look at ninety
- 3:34Speaker 3: six percent of our guests are working in the community,
- 3:37Speaker 3: so we are dressing workforce development. And when majority of
- 3:42Speaker 3: our guests leave our program, they have paid off a
- 3:45Speaker 3: significant amount, if not.
- 3:46Speaker 2: All, of their debt.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Currently, from twenty fifteen to twenty twenty five, our guests
- 3:54Speaker 3: have paid off three million, seven hundred and thirty six
- 3:57Speaker 3: thousand dollars in debt, So that's two fines and restitution, back,
- 4:03Speaker 3: child support, and other debts such as utility bills, landlords,
- 4:07Speaker 3: medical bills, sometimes parents because they have owed them money.
- 4:12Speaker 3: That is money that is going right back into our community,
- 4:16Speaker 3: the state of South Dakota, and some people when you
- 4:19Speaker 3: said the community grows and more people come, we sit
- 4:22Speaker 3: at about ninety two percent of our guests our South
- 4:26Speaker 3: Dakota residents, and that's by their birth certificate or their
- 4:29Speaker 3: state issued ID.
- 4:30Speaker 1: You guys have done so many amazing things for so
- 4:33Speaker 1: many deserving people, and there's probably people listening going how
- 4:36Speaker 1: can I help with this amazing mission. Well, I'm glad
- 4:38Speaker 1: you asked the twenty thirty and you will dinner in
- 4:40Speaker 1: auction as October the fifth. Let's talk about this event
- 4:44Speaker 1: and what folks can expect to have on that evening.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Well, this is our annual event that we raise our
- 4:50Speaker 3: funds for the daily operations of our agency, and so
- 4:54Speaker 3: we have I know it sounds like a big number,
- 4:57Speaker 3: but the tickets are going fast because we have had
- 4:59Speaker 3: people we have come every single year. We have approximately
- 5:03Speaker 3: one thousand seats to fill the Who Follows Convention Center
- 5:07Speaker 3: on Monday, October fifth. If people want to, go to
- 5:10Speaker 3: our website www dot Stfrancishouse dot com and you can
- 5:17Speaker 3: click on to register. There is no cost for tickets
- 5:20Speaker 3: because we have such amazing corporate sponsors that cover the
- 5:23Speaker 3: cost of the venue. Because then everything raised that night
- 5:27Speaker 3: between our silent auction, our live auction, our other events
- 5:33Speaker 3: that are going on, and especially our fundamission, which is
- 5:36Speaker 3: always the expanding program services that we have here at
- 5:40Speaker 3: the Saint Francis House. That all goes to meet the
- 5:45Speaker 3: guest needs by feeding them, housing them and getting those
- 5:48Speaker 3: program services to them.
- 5:49Speaker 1: And this is a great opportunity to get together with
- 5:51Speaker 1: your friends and do something good for the community. You
- 5:55Speaker 1: don't need to buy a ticket, but you should register
- 5:58Speaker 1: in advance let's talk about how we do that right now.
- 6:00Speaker 2: So it's very easy.
- 6:02Speaker 3: If you go to our website, and even if you
- 6:04Speaker 3: just google Saint Francis House, Sioux falls right on the homepage,
- 6:08Speaker 3: it has the link to register. You click on that,
- 6:11Speaker 3: you put in your name, your phone number, your email address,
- 6:15Speaker 3: and you are automatically registered. And then I will be
- 6:18Speaker 3: reaching out as well as my marketing team to see
- 6:22Speaker 3: are you wanting a table because a table seats eight
- 6:25Speaker 3: or ten, or are you just wanting to come with
- 6:28Speaker 3: maybe you and a friend or your spouse, because we
- 6:30Speaker 3: have open tables that we will seat people at.
- 6:33Speaker 2: So it is it is such a fun night.
- 6:36Speaker 3: We have Jonathan Larson from Larson and Larson Auctioneering.
- 6:38Speaker 2: He is a hoot. If you've ever not seen him,
- 6:41Speaker 2: just coming to see him as amazing.
- 6:43Speaker 3: And we also, most importantly Autoworks is donating nineteen sixty
- 6:50Speaker 3: nine Chevy pickup.
- 6:53Speaker 2: The raffle is twenty dollars tickets, unlimited tickets.
- 6:56Speaker 3: We're drawing the night of Monday, October fifth, so the
- 6:59Speaker 3: truck will be there and the funds are being split
- 7:02Speaker 3: between the Saint Francis House and the Union Gospel Mission.
- 7:05Speaker 3: So this isn't just about Saint Francis House. This is
- 7:07Speaker 3: about all of our collaboration and the work that we do,
- 7:11Speaker 3: partnering with all of our agencies to meet the needs
- 7:15Speaker 3: of those who need us the most.
- 7:17Speaker 1: So many wonderful people all getting together and folks, I
