- 0:52Speaker 2: All right, let's get started with Al.
- 0:55Speaker 3: He's got his football on.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Sam go ahead.
- 0:58Speaker 1: When you're looking at the tape, is the people not
- 1:02Speaker 1: being in a right spot? Is it?
- 1:07Speaker 2: Is it the people out of position?
- 1:11Speaker 4: Is it?
- 1:12Speaker 5: Is it technique? What was the problem?
- 1:15Speaker 2: Because I don't even remember the last time somebody ran
- 1:19Speaker 2: the ball like that on us. Yeah, yeah, Well in
- 1:22Speaker 2: the first half, Williams and Quorum combined for nineteen for
- 1:26Speaker 2: one oh nine. That was just in the first half alone.
- 1:30Speaker 2: There were a couple of you know, you probably if
- 1:33Speaker 2: you think about it, you'd probably know the answer. Because
- 1:36Speaker 2: the run game it starts up front, and if guys
- 1:40Speaker 2: are getting blocked and moved, then you start to have
- 1:43Speaker 2: issues at the second level with guys being able to
- 1:46Speaker 2: fill in their gaps properly. And in the first half,
- 1:50Speaker 2: like for instance, Jordan Davis did not have a great
- 1:53Speaker 2: first half. He had a really good second half, but
- 1:55Speaker 2: he did not have a great first half. Jalen Carter
- 1:59Speaker 2: and I spoke to someone today who seems to think
- 2:01Speaker 2: he's injured, but he's got the non factor in the
- 2:04Speaker 2: In the run game, he was getting moved, so he
- 2:07Speaker 2: was not a factor at all. And they had some
- 2:09Speaker 2: major issues setting the edge in the run game, and
- 2:13Speaker 2: the Rams must have noticed something on tape, And I'll
- 2:16Speaker 2: be curious as we go forward, because they were running
- 2:19Speaker 2: to the nickel and a lot of times Dejene was
- 2:23Speaker 2: lined up pretty tight to the formation and he just
- 2:27Speaker 2: couldn't set the edge. He was too tight. So they
- 2:29Speaker 2: had success running to the edge.
- 2:31Speaker 6: So my question was, I know we talked like Mike
- 2:34Speaker 6: Quick a couple of weeks ago. He said the basically,
- 2:37Speaker 6: the quick game or the up tempo cannot be a
- 2:39Speaker 6: foundation of the offense. But see it seems to work
- 2:42Speaker 6: better with Hurts. So what can they do to use
- 2:45Speaker 6: it so it's more effective in the places they call
- 2:48Speaker 6: for it. I know you have to have positive plays
- 2:49Speaker 6: to run it, but it seems for my untrained you
- 2:52Speaker 6: know fan I that things just seem to click.
- 2:55Speaker 2: When they run. Are you talking about no huddle tempo? Yes, oh,
- 3:00Speaker 2: okay tempo. Last year they used a lot of no
- 3:03Speaker 2: huddle tempo and it was very effective normally normally, and
- 3:07Speaker 2: nothing's one hundred percent, but normally you go no huddle
- 3:10Speaker 2: tempo after positive plays. In other words, you don't go
- 3:13Speaker 2: no huddle tempo on third and twelve. So normally, if
- 3:16Speaker 2: you can let's say it's first down and you gain eight,
- 3:19Speaker 2: you know, you can race up to the line. The
- 3:22Speaker 2: defense might be a little discombobulated, you get them staying
- 3:25Speaker 2: with the same personnel whether they want to or not,
- 3:27Speaker 2: and you just start, you know, running plays. Hurtz is
- 3:30Speaker 2: a veteran enough to be able to do that. We
- 3:32Speaker 2: saw him do it very well last year. They did
- 3:34Speaker 2: it more Chris in this game than in the first
- 3:37Speaker 2: two games. I would expect to continue to see more
- 3:40Speaker 2: of its situationally, so to me, I would I mean, again,
- 3:44Speaker 2: I'm not Kevin Pittulo I'm not Nick Siriani. I would
- 3:47Speaker 2: expect to see it. I think it works for them.
- 3:49Speaker 2: It worked really effectively a year ago. It's a veteran offense.
- 3:53Speaker 2: You've got a veteran O line. You know, there shouldn't
- 3:56Speaker 2: be any issues with people not understanding what you're trying
- 3:59Speaker 2: to get done. So I would expect to see more
- 4:01Speaker 2: of it. Like what you do on the tape, it's unbelievable.
- 4:05Speaker 6: But what I was going to ask specifically, is what
- 4:08Speaker 6: got you to the love of the tape?
- 4:09Speaker 2: It is unbelievable what you do well. First of all,
- 4:12Speaker 2: I didn't play football, so because I grew up in Queensland,
- 4:15Speaker 2: New York, my high school didn't have a football team,
- 4:17Speaker 2: so I played basketball and baseball. But the way I guess,
- 4:20Speaker 2: I just was maybe coached at a young age playing
- 4:23Speaker 2: those sports. I always saw the games cerebrally, you know,
- 4:26Speaker 2: the games I played. I thought about them so and
- 4:30Speaker 2: I started NFL films in nineteen seventy nine, And in
- 4:33Speaker 2: nineteen eighty four, Steve Sable walked into my office and
- 4:35Speaker 2: I was just a young guy, had been here five
- 4:37Speaker 2: years doing what everybody else was doing documentary films, and
- 4:41Speaker 2: he said, you know, I think I have an idea
- 4:43Speaker 2: for maybe a matchup show, and you're the guy. And
- 4:47Speaker 2: then he walked out of my office and I'm sitting
- 4:48Speaker 2: and going okay, And from that moment on, it was
- 4:52Speaker 2: all on me. And that's when the show started because
- 4:55Speaker 2: it was the summer of eighty four, and I just
- 4:59Speaker 2: you know, if I were to look back on the
- 5:00Speaker 2: early years, I probably either laugh or cry or both.
- 5:03Speaker 2: But we got the coaching tape in ninety one or
- 5:06Speaker 2: ninety two, and that was like the Rosetta stone that
- 5:09Speaker 2: opened up. I had to learn the whole game, and
- 5:11Speaker 2: I'm still learning to this day. I had to learn
- 5:13Speaker 2: the game through the coaching tape, and I'm grateful to
- 5:17Speaker 2: so many people for taking time for teaching me, you know.
- 5:20Speaker 2: But I'm also a grinder, as you guys probably know,
- 5:23Speaker 2: you know, I don't. I always think there's way more
- 5:26Speaker 2: to learn, way more to see, you know, you never
- 5:28Speaker 2: have the answers, truly the answers. So I just grind
- 5:33Speaker 2: away and grind away and grind away, and just keep
- 5:35Speaker 2: watching football and talking to as many people that I can.
- 5:39Speaker 2: But the Matchup Show has been on the air since
- 5:41Speaker 2: nineteen eighty four. It's the longest running studio show in
- 5:45Speaker 2: the NFL.
- 5:45Speaker 6: What is happening in the league now that Eagles did
- 5:49Speaker 6: it twice and other teams did it?
- 5:51Speaker 2: About blocking the field goals?
- 5:52Speaker 4: What are you seeing?
- 5:53Speaker 5: This was?
- 5:55Speaker 2: You know, I don't know, I don't study that, but
- 5:57Speaker 2: this week I think there were more black field goals
- 5:59Speaker 2: than I've seen in the life ten years.
- 6:01Speaker 5: You know.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Now, Mark, here's what the Eagles did.
- 6:04Speaker 3: So they knew that he that John Carty had a
- 6:06Speaker 3: loa trajectory on his kicks.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Yeah, they already had.
- 6:10Speaker 3: That yet, So they knew this. And apparently it was
- 6:15Speaker 3: because they because you know, they've got the Microsoft surface
- 6:18Speaker 3: so they could see it. So that Jordan they talked
- 6:21Speaker 3: to Jordan Davidson, Jalen Carter about it, and that was
- 6:25Speaker 3: they got it. They saw it and they adjusted, like
- 6:28Speaker 3: that's great coaching. Now, the issue with it, we don't
- 6:31Speaker 3: really get any special teams. That's not what this is about.
- 6:33Speaker 3: But we can talk more about it tonight or tomorrow
- 6:35Speaker 3: night if your show off. But the issue with the
- 6:37Speaker 3: five month returns was embarrassing. That can't happen. They're lucky
- 6:42Speaker 3: and they didn't turn it over. They didn't, but they're
- 6:44Speaker 3: very luck Yeah, Mark.
- 6:46Speaker 2: The only the issue for me is because I watched
- 6:49Speaker 2: so much tape and you know, and there's only so
- 6:51Speaker 2: many hours in the day. I'm just not a special
- 6:52Speaker 2: teams guy. And I'll be the first to admit it.
- 6:55Speaker 2: I don't know a lot about it. Its coach, I
- 6:57Speaker 2: don't know a lot about it.
- 6:58Speaker 5: So my question was, I guess, if Jordan Davis continues,
- 7:03Speaker 5: I guess this next like three three games stretch throughout
- 7:08Speaker 5: the entire season, is that similar or better production than
- 7:12Speaker 5: what Milton Williams gave us last year?
- 7:15Speaker 2: No, because what has to happen with Jordan Davis. He's
- 7:18Speaker 2: been a dominant run defender for most of the three games.
- 7:21Speaker 2: The next step is because he's playing a lot more
- 7:24Speaker 2: snaps now, so he's playing in passing situations. Is he
- 7:27Speaker 2: needs to now become a pass rusher. Milton Williams was
- 7:29Speaker 2: a very good pass rusher. Milton Williams could win one
- 7:32Speaker 2: on one in the pass game in multiple ways. Jordan
- 7:36Speaker 2: Davis right now can't do that. Occasionally, he gets a
- 7:39Speaker 2: strong power bull rush just because he's such a big man,
- 7:42Speaker 2: and if he can win the leverage game, he can
- 7:44Speaker 2: push a guy back. But he's not a refined pass rusher.
- 7:47Speaker 2: That's the next step in his development. Hopefully it happens.

- 10:23Speaker 7: All right, So, I you know what, this is probably
- 10:25Speaker 7: our first game where we got kind of a sample
- 10:28Speaker 7: with the Dori Jackson and Jacorean Bennett. So I wanted
- 10:31Speaker 7: to get your thoughts on how you thought both of
- 10:33Speaker 7: those guys fared well.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Benett only played twelve snaps. He played in the last
- 10:37Speaker 2: possession of the game, and obviously Nikoua caught some balls.
- 10:40Speaker 2: But it's not as if they burned him, you know,
- 10:42Speaker 2: for fifty yard plays. I like Bennett. I'd like to
- 10:45Speaker 2: see him well. I answered it this way. It's clear,
- 10:48Speaker 2: and I don't know what the Eagles are going to do,
- 10:50Speaker 2: but it's clear they're looking for a corner to play
- 10:52Speaker 2: opposite Mitchell. All the way, Bennet got hurt. I think
- 10:55Speaker 2: on the last play.
- 10:55Speaker 3: We'll see if he shows something injury. We'll just be
- 10:57Speaker 3: aware of that.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Yeah, So you know, I think that you know, there's
- 11:00Speaker 2: they're probably you know, how he's good at this. We'll
- 11:02Speaker 2: see if there's a trade available, We'll see what's out there.
- 11:05Speaker 2: But I don't think they're they're thrilled with the situation,
- 11:08Speaker 2: you know, because what they're doing is I don't know
- 11:11Speaker 2: if deep down Vic wants to have Mitchell be a
- 11:14Speaker 2: matchup corner. I don't think that's the way he truly
- 11:17Speaker 2: wants to play. I could be wrong, you know. I
- 11:19Speaker 2: don't want to sit here and say I know it's
- 11:20Speaker 2: in Vic Fangio's head. I certainly don't. But normally I
- 11:25Speaker 2: don't think he you know, now he did that at
- 11:27Speaker 2: times with Certan when he was in Denver, but my
- 11:30Speaker 2: sense is his normal way of playing his defense is
- 11:34Speaker 2: not to do that.
- 11:34Speaker 4: Yes, my question regard run the offensive line, I was
- 11:37Speaker 4: wondering if you maybe could comment on with Apsen, Makai
- 11:39Speaker 4: Becton and I know Stein's playing, well, what are you
- 11:42Speaker 4: seeing versus last year's offensive line play in this year's
- 11:45Speaker 4: offensive line place? It seems like we're starting at Beck.
- 11:48Speaker 2: I think it is nowhere near as good and you
- 11:50Speaker 2: know how you know that. I actually looked at the
- 11:52Speaker 2: stats today. Last year, on average, Barkley led the NFL
- 11:57Speaker 2: by a wide margin and not having for contact until
- 12:01Speaker 2: four and a half yards, so he was already at
- 12:03Speaker 2: the second level. This year, the first contact is happening
- 12:07Speaker 2: at two yards. That is a major, major difference. So
- 12:11Speaker 2: that means he's being contacted at the first level of
- 12:14Speaker 2: the defense. So he's not able to get through the
- 12:17Speaker 2: first level without being contacted. So the old line has
- 12:20Speaker 2: not been performing anywhere near as well in run blocking.
- 12:24Speaker 2: And you know, it's my understanding that Jeff Staalin pretty
- 12:27Speaker 2: much controls all the run game elements, so it's it's
- 12:29Speaker 2: not a Knick Siriani issue. It's not it's not a
- 12:33Speaker 2: Kevin Patool issue. It's you know, Jeff Stalin, you know,
- 12:36Speaker 2: and he's great. So we'll see if it gets figured out.
- 12:39Speaker 2: But they just haven't played as well through three games.
- 12:42Speaker 3: All right, guys, great job here is phenomenal.
- 12:44Speaker 2: This is probably the guys really appreciate everybody showing up.
- 12:47Speaker 3: A good job for the new people. Also, see you
- 12:49Speaker 3: guys later.
