- 0:00America's true porn is celebrity culture and that we're fucking
- 0:06addicted to losing ourselves in strangers lives and being
- 0:11parasocial and you know, like. They're watching porn right now,
- 0:15watching us do that. Got to put some respect on New
- 0:17Mexico. When you say New Mexico, people
- 0:19are like Breaking Bad. Sickening, but they're going to
- 0:21say. But the vibes are meth.
- 0:39Hello DJ Lulu's and welcome back to Delulu.
- 0:42And today we are joined by gusty next pop culture icon.
- 0:46I literally mean this like I'm sure if McKee, because the fact
- 0:49that we have you here right now and you're going to be the
- 0:51biggest fucking mega star in the world.
- 0:53I mean this like I genuinely mean this.
- 0:55I heard your album and everything, but we are joined by
- 0:58Miss Everything herself, Magdalene Hi.
- 1:02Hi honey, that was such a sweet intro.
- 1:05Shaking, we have pop superstardom.
- 1:07In our mix. Are you kidding me?
- 1:08Hi. How?
- 1:09Are you welcome in? I'm so happy to be.
- 1:12Here, this is so cool. We met last week.
- 1:14We did, and we fall in love. Connected instantly.
- 1:18It was so funny. Literally, we were in line for a
- 1:20carpet that we're doing together and I was telling you how my
- 1:23shoe was falling apart. And then when we're leaving this
- 1:26event, your shoe literally fell. Apart my full heel came off it.
- 1:30Literally came off. You limped out of that venue.
- 1:33That's what I get for buying vintage.
- 1:35I mean, it was so cute though. I know you.
- 1:37Walked. It was part of the performance.
- 1:39100% you're committed. Damn heels fall apart.
- 1:43But Magdalene, this is your introduction to the fucking
- 1:47world, and we're so excited to get to know you.
- 1:49But can we get to know a little bit more about you?
- 1:52Give us a little bit of the lore.
- 1:54I know that you have actually been on the scene for like a
- 1:57decade now. You've done a lot.
- 1:59Yeah, I've been around the block you.
- 2:00Have been around the block. But just not in the yeah, not in
- 2:03the pop scene. I was in the indie world for a
- 2:05moment in. The indie world and now you
- 2:08crossed over to Pop. So give us the Laura.
- 2:10What was going on over there? I've toured in indie rock bands
- 2:15for like 5 years. That was my early 20s.
- 2:17Was touring in the indie rock bands.
- 2:20I played in a band called Current Joys in a band called
- 2:22Surf Curse. Oh.
- 2:23My gosh, I love current joys. Me too, they're really cool.
- 2:27I live It was honestly the most formative years of my life and
- 2:31how awesome. Like what?
- 2:32A rock star existence. Dude so crazy like I so young
- 2:36too and I just kind of like fell into it honestly.
- 2:38Like I, I was in college and I dropped out and I had a friend
- 2:49named Rob Tilden. His he has a project called Boyo
- 2:53and he grew up in LA and he was like in the scene, the indie
- 2:57rock scene, like with girl pool and like current joys and surf
- 3:00curse and like everyone playing at the smell, which is like this
- 3:03iconic downtown venue, like in a back alley way that like
- 3:08everyone kind of got their start at.
- 3:09And I just like didn't have a lot of friends that I connected
- 3:14with at school. And I was just like, fuck this.
- 3:18Like I, it's a miracle I graduated high school.
- 3:20I was going to school for music and I like still couldn't pass.
- 3:22I just like don't. Well, in school you don't need
- 3:26school. You're.
- 3:26Fine, thanks. I was like the most uninspired
- 3:29I've ever been. I told they got that.
- 3:31It just doesn't. It feels like, like, kind of
- 3:33like, like caged like that. You're gonna feel like
- 3:36suffocated, you know? Yeah, I just like don't.
- 3:39It made me. I was so uninspired.
- 3:41It's like when I like tried to take like guitar lessons or
- 3:44piano lessons, like it felt like a chore and I didn't want to do
- 3:47it anymore. Like I had to just teach myself.
- 3:49Oh yeah. Or else, I don't know, it just
- 3:51like feels like. A chore.
- 3:52Presenting it, yeah. I don't know.
- 3:54I just don't do well in a school context.
- 3:56I'm off like ADHD down. Yeah, it's like maybe more Type
- 3:59B. You want like the freedom?
- 4:00I'm so type B babe, like I'm fighting for my fucking life.
- 4:03Every day so I'm super type. AI could see that yin and Yang
- 4:09honey. There you go, we love it.
- 4:11Yeah, but yeah, so my friend Rob kind of like introduced, he was
- 4:14like, yeah, yeah, come hang out with my friends and took me to
- 4:17some shows and I met that kind of that whole crew of people
- 4:21and. But none of them really knew I
- 4:23played music and I, you know, like I went to school for
- 4:26songwriting, but I grew up in New Mexico.
- 4:27So like we don't nobody tours through New Mexico.
- 4:31Like I would like busk outside of Starbucks.
- 4:33That was like the extent of my performance experience.
- 4:36Like there wasn't shows to even go to like you.
- 4:39Gotta get out of there then 'cause you wanted to do like an
- 4:41artist project you wanted. To do music, fuck yeah.
- 4:43And just like a. Big music scene over there.
- 4:45No, there's no music scene. Maybe a little more now, I don't
- 4:49know. It's kind of like period.
- 4:51Not actually. It's like getting gentrified as
- 4:53fuck after quarantine but. You're going to bring respect to
- 4:57New Mexico's name. Yeah, we've got to put some
- 4:59respect on New Mexico. Like right now when you say New
- 5:02Mexico, people are like Breaking Bad.
- 5:04Which sickening. Best show ever.
- 5:06Sickening. But but they were going to say.
- 5:08But the vibes are meth, you know what I mean?
- 5:11Breaking Bad, the vibe is giving.
- 5:14We got to change. That we got to change the
- 5:16narrative. Yeah, we're rebranding New
- 5:21Mexico, OK. Absolutely.
- 5:24But yeah, I mean, New Mexico, amazing place, gorgeous,
- 5:26culturally rich, like, amazing place.
- 5:29But no, there's not a lot going on there.
- 5:32So, yeah, I, like, hadn't played shows and stuff.
- 5:34I, like, knew I wanted to do music since I was a kid.
- 5:37I've been writing songs since I was, like, a little kid.
- 5:41Yeah. Like I used to punish my play
- 5:42dates, like been like we're writing a song, but and I like
- 5:46went through my old journals like as a child and I was like
- 5:48writing so. You were about it.
- 5:50Oh no, I been, I'm true to this. I'm true to this.
- 5:54And I was musical theatre like I've just been.
- 5:56I've always done it. I don't know.
- 5:58It was never like a what's Maddie going to do?
- 6:01Growing up, It was always like. You're going to be a superstar.
- 6:07Thank you. I'm trying.
- 6:08With this, then, you know, you're doing musical theater and
- 6:10you said you've been songwriting forever.
- 6:11Do you like performing more than making the music?
- 6:14Writing the music, I'm curious about that because I just
- 6:18performed for the first time, like ever, like last week, and I
- 6:21surprisingly loved it. But I usually love writing the
- 6:24music. So I was like, interesting.
- 6:26I didn't know that about me. Yeah, I think I love it for
- 6:30different reasons, because I making the music.
- 6:33I think this experience making music is very different than
- 6:36it's ever been in the past. Like I was self produced because
- 6:39I had a project before this called Your Angel.
- 6:41And then I have this kind of run of singles.
- 6:44Yeah, Magdalene's like a new project, but this run of
- 6:48singles. But I've been self produced like
- 6:51I've always been self produced. And I would just sit in my house
- 6:54alone and produce and write it myself.
- 6:56And then after the fact, I'd have some friends like touch it
- 6:58and whatever. And that was always like very
- 7:02sacred and spiritual for me and very like, I don't know, I think
- 7:09I always like growing up would like lock myself, like making
- 7:13music was how I like process the world around me always.
- 7:16So that's like how I but I feel like ever since I've moved into
- 7:21pop, I think it still feels that way making it, but like the
- 7:25performance of it feels so cathartic and the I feel like
- 7:28I'm like tapping into a part of myself that is like was there
- 7:32when I was a kid when I did musical theater and stuff.
- 7:35And then I kind of pushed down after because I was like indie,
- 7:38like, I don't know, the swag of like indie bandits.
- 7:40Like we're in the clothes. We fucking walked on the street
- 7:44from from the street to the stage.
- 7:46Like we don't give a fuck. And like, yeah, it's like a
- 7:49whole different. There's no theatrics.
- 7:51Like it was just like, yeah, like T-shirt.
- 7:53Like I would be like fucking like, beer in one hand,
- 7:56cigarette in another, like playing the keys, You know what
- 7:59I mean? So.
- 8:00And I feel like I just kind of like lost touch with my, like,
- 8:03theatrical, like you're a kid. It totally is.
- 8:07Yeah. But I just kind of like, I don't
- 8:08know, I, you know, Oh, Liv, Lovely.
- 8:12Sorry. Greatest show ever.
- 8:13Sue Sylvester is one of the most brilliant characters ever.
- 8:16She's. So iconic she's.
- 8:17So funny I I started rewatching Glee recently actually.
- 8:20I'm going to have to do. That it's I've been cackling by
- 8:24myself in my house, cackling out loud.
- 8:27It's so funny. Personally think it aged really
- 8:29well. And you know what?
- 8:30Spill. Everyone and I hated her growing
- 8:33up to Rachel Berry. Rewatching, I'm like that bitch
- 8:38literally like stood on visit. She believed in herself.
- 8:41She lifted people up around her. I was like, she was actually the
- 8:43realist bitch in that show. She was.
- 8:44The original delulu. She was about it.
- 8:46Literally, yeah. She was absolutely.
- 8:49And you know what? I got that because yes, people
- 8:51hated on her, but I was like. No, she's me.
- 8:53She. She she knew she was a star and
- 8:55she was and she was, and she was right.
- 8:58Period. Period.
- 9:00Yeah, it's good for her. Precisely.
- 9:01I feel like I'm a Rachel Berry rising personally.
- 9:03So like I got. A yeah, 100%.
- 9:06You see that for me, I actually really do.
- 9:09Because she's also got a really type A moving, honest and.
- 9:11She's yeah. You guys have the same like
- 9:13essence? Oh my God, I don't know if
- 9:14that's good or bad, but that will take.
- 9:16It not derogatory, not not Rachel Berry derogatory.
- 9:19Rachel Berry Complimentary. Yes.
- 9:22We love it, we take it, we take it.
- 9:24So we love Glee. You've loved Glee.
- 9:25Music athlete was a big influence for you too.
- 9:28Totally, totally. Yeah.
- 9:30I kind of lost touch with that for some reason.
- 9:33Really just like going to. The indie scene.
- 9:35Yeah, and I guess. It's a different crowd.
- 9:37Too, I think like in my early 20s, looking back in hindsight,
- 9:43I was like so repressed, like I think I'm just like a very like
- 9:47I've like traumatized person. And I think that like in my
- 9:51early 20s, like sifting through that to like.
- 9:55Like processing it too and like going through it and dealing
- 9:57with that and then. Also like.
- 9:59Just trying to make art at the same time.
- 10:01For sure. I think it just like it for a
- 10:02second, I like kind of I left New Mexico and I was like
- 10:06different traffic. Like I would talk about my past
- 10:08self like as if it was a different person.
- 10:10Like I kind of was just like, no, this is my new life.
- 10:14And yeah, I don't know, something just like kind of got
- 10:17lost along the way. But then I, I feel like, I like,
- 10:20and I think honestly, that's just like going through your
- 10:2220s. I think it's like you're, you're
- 10:24working through, you know, you're like becoming an
- 10:27independent human being and you're kind of like growing up.
- 10:30And I feel like the older you get, the closer to your child's
- 10:34self, like inner child you become because the more you get
- 10:39to know yourself, the closer you get to like the essence of who
- 10:42you truly are. So maybe that had something to
- 10:45do with it and more of the. Freedom for it too, because I
- 10:47think especially when you're in your early 20s and I'm 29, so
- 10:50when you're in your early 20s, it's like really easy to be
- 10:53impressionable. Like, go with the crowd, see
- 10:54what's up, especially in the scenes that you're in and the
- 10:56people that you. You're figuring it out.
- 10:58You're just doing everything 100%.
- 11:00And it's also really fun. Totally.
- 11:02It has to happen. Oh yeah, Canon event for sure.
- 11:06Definitely. I mean, I feel like your New
- 11:08Mexico roots is it's bleeding through in your art right now
- 11:11too, because the DJ Jesus music video and we're gonna deep dive
- 11:14on that because I love that video so much.
- 11:16It's on the mood board funny, but you have like this glam
- 11:20desert aesthetic, you know what I mean?
- 11:22And I just feel like you bring this grittiness and even like
- 11:25this rock edge to like what is going to be and it already is
- 11:29iconic pop music. You know what I mean?
- 11:31Because you remind me of like I was reading your comments on
- 11:33your TikTok and you were getting Madonna ex Lady Gaga love child
- 11:37allegations and honestly. Literally honor Oh my mother's.
- 11:42Absolutely. And I see it 100%.
- 11:44That's why I'm like, gags that you're sitting on the Duluth
- 11:47couch right now. Oh my.
- 11:48God, like what? What?
- 11:49That's crazy. You're an.
- 11:50Icon. What the fuck?
- 11:51Wait. But.
- 11:53I see the influences like especially the New Mexico, like,
- 11:55is that intentional when going into this project because this
- 11:57is a different project for you. You said that you had a
- 11:59different project before, and then this is like your artist
- 12:02name, your new presence, like what's going on here?
- 12:06I think that, yeah, this project is the truest to who I am, I
- 12:12think that I've ever been. And I think when I was like
- 12:15making other pop music, it was almost this like character that
- 12:18I put on in Magdalene. Of course, like is an unhinged
- 12:22bitch. Like, really, it's a character
- 12:25as well, but it's very much like the essence of me and my
- 12:28upbringing. And I think the album itself is
- 12:30very like, it kind of goes from like my teenage years up until
- 12:35present time and like tells that story like a musical almost.
- 12:39And I was going to say absolutely, I think.
- 12:42Plays like a It plays like a musical.
- 12:44Thank you. I love that.
- 12:45That's a huge compliment. I love the album just get into
- 12:48it everyone please know in advance I said on slush puppies
- 12:52episode I love the album. I'm going to say it here like.
- 12:55Thank you, honey. Really a great album, but thank
- 12:57you. Yeah, that's so.
- 12:58That's interesting because I was wondering because like with
- 13:00Magdalene, it's such a powerful stage name and it's such a
- 13:03powerful presence. It obviously has the religious
- 13:05undertone. So I was wondering like how
- 13:08connected you are as a person to this artist project, but you're
- 13:12saying it's like personal to you too?
- 13:13Yeah, extremely. I mean, it is like me, you know,
- 13:16I think just an exaggerated kind of unhinged version, but it's
- 13:21like very much the most me thing I've ever created.
- 13:25I. Feel so.
- 13:27Good. Oh, it's so fulfilling.
- 13:28I think like the whole desert trash of it all like I think
- 13:32that desert trash. I think when you grow up in the
- 13:35desert, like the desert is a very specific environment.
- 13:41I think that growing up in the desert is like very.
- 13:44And anybody you talk to who did like.
- 13:46Because a couple reasons and specifically New Mexico, I think
- 13:50like humans aren't meant to survive in the desert first of
- 13:52all. So it's almost like the land is
- 13:54energetically like rejecting like, like humans being there
- 14:00and also like a lot of like genocide happened on that land.
- 14:06It's it there's a deep, deep heaviness to it has a lot of
- 14:10trauma. Yeah.
- 14:11And I think that like, yeah, the desert Santa Fe where I grew up,
- 14:15it's like an energy vortex, like, and it's so gorgeous, but
- 14:18it's met with this like, really dark, like underbelly and like,
- 14:22a lot of tragedy happens there. I lost a lot of friends really
- 14:25young. Like, there's a lot of drugs
- 14:26there. There's a lot, you know, it's
- 14:28like, it just an intense. Yeah.
- 14:30Like the desert is just weird and weird shit happens in the
- 14:32desert and it attracts very strange people.
- 14:35And I think that like when you grow up in a place like that, it
- 14:38like truly shapes you as a human being.
- 14:40Obviously anywhere anyone grows up, but.
- 14:43Especially in a place that can feel energetically turbulent.
- 14:46Right. And that's so the beauty is so
- 14:48stark, like people travel to Santa Fe because it's so
- 14:51beautiful. I think it's most beautiful
- 14:52place on the planet. Like it's gorgeous.
- 14:54And I think that that like you should, it's honestly a really
- 14:57special place. It's bizarre.
- 15:00You'll kind of feel the heaviness, but it's sick because
- 15:02it's like the native culture is super preserved and like
- 15:06enriched and like it's very culturally rich in a way that
- 15:10like I think a lot of places in America aren't.
- 15:13And I feel like privilege in hindsight, I didn't realize it
- 15:17growing up, but in hindsight, I'm like, like most my teachers
- 15:19were made native. Like I got to like learn the
- 15:21like actual history of America and like it was a really cool
- 15:26place to grow up in that sense, but it was really hard in other
- 15:28ways. And I think it, you know, like,
- 15:30for some reason, the desert landscape feels so crucial to
- 15:34this project. Like it's just like a part of it
- 15:37for me. Too, Definitely, yeah.
- 15:39I think you're carrying that part of your identity with this
- 15:41project too, because especially saying it's the most you, yeah.
- 15:44It just feels the, I don't know, it just has to be that way, Just
- 15:47feels where it lives. And we made it in the desert.
- 15:49We went out to Joshua Tree to make it.
- 15:51Is that where? You guys filmed the music video
- 15:52for DJ Jesus? No, we filmed that in Santa
- 15:54Clarita. Oh, that was also super sick.
- 15:57But you made the album Joshua Tree.
- 15:59Yeah. Clock OK, let's get into that
- 16:02but I I do want to talk about DJ Jesus, I want to talk about the
- 16:05song I want to talk about the video and I want to talk about
- 16:07everything I love this song I literally wanted to post this on
- 16:10my Instagram story. I did post it and I deleted and
- 16:12I post it again. But basically I was like, I have
- 16:14not been this excited about a lead single from a pop girl in a
- 16:18really long time. And the only reason I deleted it
- 16:20was because I was like, Oh my God, all my pop star friends are
- 16:22going to see this and be like, hey, you know what I mean?
- 16:24So I was like, OK, wait, let me rephrase this.
- 16:26They don't watch the show. So I'm going to say it here, but
- 16:29I have not been genuinely humanly excited about a song in
- 16:32a long time. So like Charlie, our publicist,
- 16:35my publicist, he was telling me about you and this song like
- 16:38weeks ago. And I'm very much like, I'm very
- 16:41critical. I'm very skeptical because you
- 16:43have to hear the song. And I was like, OK, Charlie.
- 16:45And he plays it for me. And the second it starts, I was
- 16:47like, oh, yeah, this is good. I immediately locked in.
- 16:49I was like, oh, this is good. This is a smash immediately.
- 16:53And I was like, holy shit, what is this?
- 16:55And then he was like, you have to see the music video.
- 16:57And then I was like, what is going on?
- 17:00You created such a world. Like, honestly, can I be the
- 17:03first to throw the industry plant allegation at you?
- 17:06Like everywhere. So quality.
- 17:08Thank you. Nepotism.
- 17:10Allegation clash that yeah, nepotism industry plant.
- 17:13That's the goal. Let's get those allegations
- 17:15rolling. Alligate it for you Reddit.
- 17:18Run with it. It's.
- 17:19Because hunt to be industry plant allegations.
- 17:22I'm like, I wish honey, that's a compliment.
- 17:24I fucking I would give anything to be an industry plant to.
- 17:27Plant me Hollywood. You heard it.
- 17:29Here first, I know if I'm a plant, they're not doing a very
- 17:31good job planting me, I'll tell you that much.
- 17:33What are I? Literally tell my team I'm like
- 17:35if it's the end of 2026 and I don't get industry plant or
- 17:38nipple baby allegations, we fail.
- 17:40Yeah, we. We need to go harder, we need to
- 17:43try harder, but like, I'm going to allocate that for you because
- 17:45everything is so quality. The song itself, it is just so
- 17:48dynamic and interesting and fresh.
- 17:50What? And then the music video, I, I
- 17:53asked you, I was like, this had to be fucking expensive, holy
- 17:56shit. Because it looks so well done.
- 17:58It was so cinematic. It is on the mood board for when
- 18:01I'm doing my videos, but it's so dynamic.
- 18:04Let's talk about the song. How did the song come about?
- 18:07The song came about, I got put in a session randomly with slush
- 18:12puppy and which I really slipped through the cracks.
- 18:15I think like I don't I think he wasn't really like taking new
- 18:19sessions at the time. Like I don't know how it ended
- 18:22up that I ended up in that room, but it was just us.
- 18:25And he was like literally think DJ Jesus, because I remember him
- 18:28being like, oh, it's so crazy. Like I haven't had a session
- 18:31with a new person in like months like but work.
- 18:35And we just like clicked immediately and had so much fun
- 18:39and like it. The song just came out so fast,
- 18:41like, we made it in like a couple hours, Yeah.
- 18:44And we made the majority. We made the whole song, except
- 18:47then after the fact we added a bridge.
- 18:49Yeah. He played me the first run.
- 18:52Oh. Really.
- 18:53He played it for me and I was like, holy crap.
- 18:55It was very, very done. You know what?
- 18:57I mean, yeah, 100%. I mean, Sam's fucking amazing.
- 19:00Way more elements for the final but like.
- 19:02Yes, but Sam Smash is it first pass?
- 19:04Always, always. Oh my God, He's yeah.
- 19:06We just like connected so much. We had so much fun.
- 19:10It was so easy. We worked so well together.
- 19:12Like we just had such a fun. And we, I think we work very
- 19:15similarly. Like we're both just like, you
- 19:18know, like I feel like it comes pouring out of both of us and
- 19:21we're like, yeah, yeah, yeah, like we just kind of like, yeah.
- 19:24And I think I fuck with working with Sam a lot because he just
- 19:27like lets the session happen. Like sometimes I feel like you
- 19:29work with people and it's like they're overthinking it.
- 19:32They're thinking too much about like, well, this part of the
- 19:34line, like the end of the day, it's like just let it fucking
- 19:37run. And if the song sucks at the
- 19:39end, then don't put it out, but just let the session be.
- 19:41Let it be what it's gonna be. Don't like think about it.
- 19:44Just like make something. And Sam works that way.
- 19:46It's just like, like you just like make it.
- 19:48Witness that. It was crazy yeah.
- 19:50Literally everything you're describing, like I, I have never
- 19:52written or worked like that. I'm very meticulous about
- 19:54things. But it was very much like record
- 19:56this. Yeah, you know, it's like.
- 19:58That's how you get the best shit, babe.
- 19:59Oh, it's the best. Shit that's crazy.
- 20:01And then DJ Jesus is a smash. That's the first one that y'all
- 20:03did together. Yeah, the day we met.
- 20:05That's crazy. And then?
- 20:06Like the first time we met. Y'all decided to keep going,
- 20:08like, keep making music like. How did that come about?
- 20:12Honestly, Sam's so funny, dude. He like, he's like, we finished
- 20:16the session. He like had another session.
- 20:19And then I just like my phone was ringing at like 8:00 that
- 20:23night and I look and it was him and I was like, what the fuck?
- 20:25I pick up and he's like, hey, I want to get dinner.
- 20:27And I was like, yeah. And he just like, I don't know,
- 20:33Sam's funny that way. I think like when he like
- 20:36someone or like think someone is a good person, he's just like, I
- 20:38want to be your friend. And so we just like became
- 20:41friends. Like he just called me that day
- 20:42and was like, I want to go to dinner.
- 20:43And then we were just like homies after that.
- 20:45And I think we worked so well together.
- 20:47And he really like saw the vision.
- 20:51And so, yeah, we just, he like made time for me and worked at
- 20:55night and after his sessions and stuff to, you know, do it with
- 21:01me and yeah, so fun. That's incredible.
- 21:06Yeah, the project is so strong and cohesive and like, I know he
- 21:10did the majority of the album. Yeah, yeah, he did all that.
- 21:13He Yeah. I think, like, the thing that
- 21:16makes Sam a really amazing producer is he like, obviously
- 21:22technical skill. He's so he's a great musician.
- 21:25He's a great producer. Yeah, yeah.
- 21:28He's a great writer and producer.
- 21:29But also Sam has this ability to, like, see in someone what's
- 21:34special and makes them different and then, like, pull it to the
- 21:36forefront. And I think sometimes it's hard
- 21:38to, like, see that within. It's hard to perceive yourself.
- 21:41But he just has this gift where he has, like, a deep intuition
- 21:45and, like, sees what makes someone special and pulls it out
- 21:47of them. And I feel like he did that for
- 21:49me, like, especially with like the way I sing and stuff.
- 21:52Like if you listen to the music I was putting out before this,
- 21:56like I'm very like dreamy and whatever.
- 21:59And. And he was just like, you're not
- 22:01using your voice the way you should.
- 22:03Oh, yeah. And I was like, what's the fuck?
- 22:05Yeah. He was just like, you can like
- 22:06go operatic. You have this low.
- 22:08He was like, what are you doing? And I was like.
- 22:10Fuck I like that though. Like he's stepping in.
- 22:12No, no. And he's so honest and real and
- 22:14he just like, clocks you and like this 24 year old little
- 22:18fucker, I'm like, God damn it, you're right.
- 22:21Yeah. He like, clocked me.
- 22:22I was like, Jesus fucking Christ, like, you're right.
- 22:25Yeah. And here we go.
- 22:26But he just kind of pulled out this voice that I would, like,
- 22:28always sing in when I was alone or like singing other people's
- 22:30songs or singing musical theatre songs or whatever.
- 22:32And he was just like, why aren't you doing that?
- 22:34And I was like, why? Are you singing if you're not?
- 22:35I don't know. I was like, I don't know,
- 22:37actually, that's a really good question.
- 22:39Here we are. We're.
- 22:40Going to do it now, yeah. Damn.
- 22:41That's crazy. Yeah, so I feel like this album
- 22:43was like very much a collaboration in terms of like,
- 22:47him bringing things out of me that I wasn't necessarily like,
- 22:50accessing before a. 100%. Yeah, which is really special
- 22:53and fun and like, exciting. I mean it really shows too, like
- 22:56it feels like it's fun, like making it.
- 22:58You can hear it too in the music and how it translates too.
- 23:01We had so much fun and it just this group of people who made it
- 23:04like it poured like especially after we went to the desert, we
- 23:07started it there and then came back and finished it and it was
- 23:10just everyday like song Kong song.
- 23:11Like we made this album so fast. It was like pouring out of us.
- 23:14Oh my. Gosh, wait, how long was like
- 23:16the sessions for? Like like after we after Joshua
- 23:21Tree, it was probably like 2 to three months holy.
- 23:24Shit. Like it just like came pouring
- 23:27out of all of us. Like we all just like tapped
- 23:30into the Magdalene vibe and like everyone was just like tapped
- 23:33into that energy and like the world and the story and like
- 23:38everyone was just like in the character of Magdalene.
- 23:40It was so funny. Like all of us were like walking
- 23:42around, like talking, like Miss Hannigan, like it was desert
- 23:46glam. Miss Hannigan down.
- 23:49Oh my God, love. Embodied, embodied down.
- 23:52OK, I love that. Wait, so why do we know DJ Jesus
- 23:55was the first single for your album The Lead?
- 23:58How do we know? Because it was the first song
- 24:00you did. Yeah, you know, kind of crazy.
- 24:02I don't know. We all were just like, yeah, it
- 24:04is. You're like.
- 24:05This is the one. Yeah, I just feel like it always
- 24:07was we. Agree, when I listened to the
- 24:09album and we got to that song I was like gag.
- 24:12It was like the first song we made for the album.
- 24:15It just felt like it captured it and like, I don't know, it just
- 24:19was none of us. It wasn't even like a
- 24:20conversation. We all were just like, yeah,
- 24:22obviously DJ Jesus is the lead single.
- 24:25Yeah, from my perspective too, just because like with
- 24:27Magdalene, DJ Jesus, there's a lot of religious undertones on
- 24:30this album as well. It's just like really like a
- 24:33really good representation for this project.
- 24:36The religious undertones. Yeah, DJ Jesus.
- 24:38Oh. Yeah, yeah, the.
- 24:38Album itself and then, you know, Magdalene, everything, like it's
- 24:41all tied together. It's super cohesive.
- 24:43Thank you. We're.
- 24:44Gonna get into that. OK, we're gonna get into that.
- 24:46But first I want to talk about the music video for DJ Jesus.
- 24:49Can I say one thing? Yes, please.
- 24:51The Lulu it's So what? Thanks.
- 24:56My God that video is insane. Thank you.
- 24:59And then you being kidnapped, the cultiness of it, and then
- 25:03you told me that you had like your fans in the video.
- 25:06Yeah, you just like your. Fans.
- 25:07That's crazy. They looked so sickening hot.
- 25:10I was like, why are your fans so hot?
- 25:11What? Dude, they're they were so
- 25:13sickening and cool. Like, yeah, I live for them.
- 25:16It was so fun. Yeah I just like posted because
- 25:19I have no money babe. Like I we DIY the fuck out of
- 25:22that video. Never.
- 25:23Have imagined that what the frickity frack it is.
- 25:25Oh my God, I worked so hard on that video because I produced it
- 25:28myself. It is so good.
- 25:30I'm I couldn't like. That's so good.
- 25:32Thanks, honey. Yeah, no, the extras were
- 25:34everything like we like I just posted on my story.
- 25:38I shouted to the girlies like I posted on my Instagram story and
- 25:42then looked through the people who responded and like picked
- 25:46out, but not even that like I just kind of quickly just was
- 25:48like D Ming people who like. Looked cool, like we're gonna
- 25:51make this. Happen and they showed up and
- 25:52they were like the best fucking vibe ever was freezing fucking
- 25:55cold. They were like in their tiny
- 25:57little, I don't know, it was coldest, but well during the day
- 25:59it was kind of hot and then when the sun started going down so
- 26:02then your body really doesn't have time to adjust.
- 26:04It's like it was freezing. They had such they were all such
- 26:08troopers and like so down, so worth it.
- 26:11They were everything. Oh my God, they were
- 26:12coordinated. And you had a cameo by Snow
- 26:14Wife, Miss Snow wife. How sick is that?
- 26:17I mean, you're. My sister.
- 26:18Yeah, it's my sister. Literally.
- 26:20Literally. I live for her.
- 26:21She literally just like was there because she is just a
- 26:26supportive, amazing friend in person and was just like, yeah,
- 26:29like, come hang out. I have nothing to do today.
- 26:32And then the director was like, snow get in.
- 26:34And so she just was like, OK, yeah, it's my sister.
- 26:39I live for her. She's everything.
- 26:41Yeah. And Slash works with her a lot
- 26:42too. Yes.
- 26:43Yeah, that's so cool. But me and Snow actually met
- 26:46like before she was doing music, like when she was like 19
- 26:49randomly through my friend Lucy Blue, who passed away a couple
- 26:56years ago. But she, it feels like she like,
- 27:01gifted us to each other, you know, But then we didn't see
- 27:04each other for a few years. But I, we have followed each
- 27:07other. So I always saw like, what she
- 27:08was doing. Yeah, what's up?
- 27:10And then, yeah, then I got put in a random session with Sam.
- 27:13And then, like, I put it together.
- 27:15They like, work together. And I was like, oh, what's the
- 27:17fun? Yeah.
- 27:19And then like we had met once and Lucy was like Maddie Snow,
- 27:24like wants to, wants to do music.
- 27:27Like we talked to her about it and she we like sat outside this
- 27:30party. We're at like, randomly at like
- 27:32Leonardo Dicaprio's like house girl.
- 27:34What is your life? What?
- 27:35I don't know. Like we're, I don't know.
- 27:38And we're sitting outside and yeah, I was just kind of like,
- 27:43she was like, Oh yeah. Like telling me about like,
- 27:45different people who are coming into your life and whatever.
- 27:49And I was just like, oh, that sounds sketchy.
- 27:50You don't do that. Like, this is cool.
- 27:52You are the like, you know what's best for you.
- 27:54Like you're you know what the fuck?
- 27:56And then, yeah, she took off. And like, we didn't see each
- 27:59other and we reconnected. I love her.
- 28:02Absolutely. That's so sick.
- 28:04She's a good girl. Oh yeah, you guys are super
- 28:05cool. I feel like you're both in this
- 28:06world of like just really like that, you know, the Ellie scene
- 28:10and the Pop gurlies, you guys bring so much more edge and like
- 28:13just so cool and hip and like I just, it's so fresh to me, you
- 28:16know? Thanks.
- 28:17I feel like you both have that energy which is super cool.
- 28:19We're just some real bitches and.
- 28:22Then she was a real bitch for gang in the video.
- 28:24Yeah, no, that's my sister. She's everything.
- 28:26Was that big ass cross you were carrying during the bridge
- 28:28actually heavy? No, it's like wood.
- 28:31It's like, I mean maybe no no no I could carry it myself, OK T
- 28:35like I could lift it myself. It was literally just like 2
- 28:38planks of wood painted black. I would not have imagined this
- 28:41was a DIY video. Honey.
- 28:43Like I was like, damn, a record label invested.
- 28:46Baby, I do not have a record deal that.
- 28:49Is so. Like clock that they're about
- 28:51it. Lock in.
- 28:54Oh my. God, they're going to like that.
- 28:56I need the I'm like, I don't have any money left for the next
- 28:591 so somebody come on. We got to get on this.
- 29:02Project. 100% Oh my God, pay me. Pay me please.
- 29:09OK, we'll pray to DJ Jesus. What's happening then?
- 29:13What video? Sickening.
- 29:14Oh my God. What's your favorite part about
- 29:15it? I loved when you're in the
- 29:17trailer and then they had like the microphone stuff like hooked
- 29:21up to them like an. Injected into their veins.
- 29:24What so camp? Oh my God.
- 29:26And you looked so crazy, but like, Oh my God, it was so.
- 29:30Good damn. Thanks, honey.
- 29:31You're. Performing for your life.
- 29:33Oh, always. Rent was due.
- 29:35Yes, period. Oh, I'm so proud of that video.
- 29:38Really you should. Be I've watched it so many.
- 29:40Times. Thank you.
- 29:42Yeah, I wanted to capture just like the cult of Christianity,
- 29:45you know what I mean, One. 100% and you did.
- 29:48Thank you. Oh.
- 29:48My God, you got them dancing. We had them possessed on the
- 29:52dance. Oh my gosh, at the end of the
- 29:54bridge when they all start looking up and the light comes
- 29:57up on. Them, and then it reveals and
- 29:58they're also such baddies. Baddies.
- 30:02Oh my God, that video I why I can literally tell you're video
- 30:05frame by frame right now. Like the flyer, the car, the
- 30:10kidnapping, the trailer. Oh my.
- 30:13I'm about a storyboard. Literally I.
- 30:16Love that. Video Oh honey, that's so sweet.
- 30:18Thank you. Oh my God, absolutely.
- 30:20You're a huge inspo for me personally too because I'm like
- 30:22what the fuck you did on a budget?
- 30:23What? Girl, if you put your mind to
- 30:26it, you can make anything happen.
- 30:27You just got to be a hustler and a finesser.
- 30:29We loves to hear it and any record labels or investors,
- 30:32let's get on this. Let's go ahead and reach out
- 30:35magdalene10000@gmail.com. Please contact her PR for any
- 30:41press opportunities. Charlie at.
- 30:43So let's talk about the debut album.
- 30:46Oh my God, DJ Jesus is just a taste of what is coming up next
- 30:50and you're going to be rolling out a few more singles before
- 30:51the album comes out. But this album is so looking
- 30:54sickening. What?
- 30:55Oh my God, I'm so gagged by you girl.
- 30:57Like you were giving the girls and the gays everything they
- 30:59could ever want. Like as a gay all I want is to
- 31:02be gagged genuinely. And.
- 31:04I'm like, wait. Yeah.
- 31:06You're doing it boots. Good.
- 31:08That's the goal. Let's talk about the album.
- 31:10So do you. Is this, is this like a concept
- 31:12album for you? I know there's a lot of
- 31:14religious undertones in this project with the titles, with
- 31:17the lyric, like what's going on here?
- 31:20I think even more than religion, I feel like it's kind of end up
- 31:25being like American, like a commentary on America.
- 31:28And then religion obviously ties into that.
- 31:30Yeah, very much, especially right now.
- 31:33And you know, how religion plays into like our politics and
- 31:37whatever. Very.
- 31:38Socially aware. Yeah, I mean, I think it's hard
- 31:42times. It's scary times right now.
- 31:44So it's kind of like hard not to.
- 31:46And I think I've always, like been somebody who like, writes.
- 31:49I'm like, so confessionally and like this album, like it just
- 31:54like brought out like a lot of like satirical anger and like,
- 32:01it's kind of like, it's, yeah, it's definitely like very
- 32:05theatrical that way. It's kind of funny.
- 32:07It's kind of like stupid. It's kind of, you know, it's
- 32:10camp, but it is a commentary. A musical we talked about.
- 32:14It plays like theater to me. Thank you.
- 32:17Jesus, I'm so sorry of a golf. It plays like theater to me,
- 32:20especially with the opener and going into the album, especially
- 32:23with the opener, I wouldn't have expected that.
- 32:24I'm not going to give anything away, but when the when the
- 32:26album opens, I'm like, oh, very interesting and different from
- 32:29like something you would expect from like coming off a DJ Jesus.
- 32:32I know. I feel like anytime I send the
- 32:34link to people, they're like, yeah, I clicked on it and I
- 32:35thought I was listening to the wrong thing for a second.
- 32:37I looked with you, yeah. Oh my gosh, yeah.
- 32:40You, like, sat there in the car with Charlie and we were
- 32:44listening to the album and we were gagged.
- 32:46And as it progressed, I was like, this is literally, this
- 32:48feels like a play. Oh.
- 32:49Thank you, that's how I want it to feel A. 100% like the musical
- 32:52theatre influence is like really apparent on it.
- 32:54Like it's really dramatic and big and like bold and like what
- 32:58a bold debut. Oh, that's what the press are
- 33:00going to say when the album comes out.
- 33:01Oh, I hope I point out first. So maybe like a bold, ambitious
- 33:05debut album? Oh.
- 33:07OK, you might need. To write that.
- 33:09We're copywriting that. We're copywriting that.
- 33:10We're like. Don't let the press take that.
- 33:13Don't let the press take that one, OK?
- 33:14They can have it. They can have it.
- 33:16Talk about it, please. You're so generous.
- 33:18Yes, I mean anything, anything from my DJ Jesus, that's you.
- 33:21That's you to me. What a great album.
- 33:24Thank you. So going through bringing the
- 33:26process of the album, like you said, you started in Joshua
- 33:27Tree, you worked on it for the next two to three months.
- 33:29You wrapped it up like this is like you, yeah, this albums you
- 33:34fuck. That's crazy and it's so good.
- 33:36Thank you. Yeah, it's kind of a crazy
- 33:38experience. It definitely like I didn't
- 33:40intend for. I didn't go into it like being
- 33:46like, oh, this is a concept album about this.
- 33:48It kind of just ended up and it is very personal in a lot of
- 33:52ways. Like just like I feel like there
- 33:54are songs that are very personal and like about my teen years and
- 33:58kind of my experiences, like because I definitely got wrapped
- 34:02up with some like gnarly people when I was young and that was
- 34:05doing a lot of drugs. And I'm like sober now and
- 34:08whatever I've had like an I've lived many lives.
- 34:12But yeah, yeah, 100% it really feels like that.
- 34:18And but yeah, I didn't really expect for like the like the
- 34:23America of it all. Like that just ended up coming
- 34:26out. And I guess it makes sense why.
- 34:27I mean, it's like, so there's, I mean, this country is really
- 34:32crazy right now and really like disgusting shit is happening.
- 34:36So it's kind of hard not to talk about.
- 34:38Your opinion on something in America?
- 34:41Yes. OK, let's talk about it.
- 34:42Let's get into it. You're.
- 34:43It feels like you're very socially aware about everything.
- 34:46I would love to know what are your thoughts on porn in the
- 34:49USA? What do we think about it?
- 34:54I think that. What do we have to say about
- 34:58this? I think that America's true porn
- 35:02is celebrity culture and that we're fucking addicted to losing
- 35:09ourselves in strangers lives and being parasocial and you know,
- 35:15like they're. Watching porn right now.
- 35:16Watching us do. This yes.
- 35:17And like it's it. It's like women are the Jesus of
- 35:21the world. It's like these like female
- 35:23celebrities are like, you know, lifted up and put on a pedestal
- 35:27and everyone wants them to be sexy and beautiful and perfect
- 35:32and serve choreo. And it's like the second day do
- 35:35say something wrong, wear the wrong thing, put out a bad song.
- 35:39It's like America just fucking crucifies you, you know what I
- 35:42mean? And it's like this fall from
- 35:44grace. And I think like and.
- 35:46It feels like they're like, really rooting for that fall
- 35:48from grace, especially in women in America.
- 35:51In America. Especially in pop stars.
- 35:54Yeah, 100%. But it is like people are
- 35:56fucking addicted to celebrity culture and like knowing.
- 35:59And I think especially like, like when I was growing up, you
- 36:04know, it was more like tabloids and stuff and totes.
- 36:07But there was this wall there. It was like all speculation.
- 36:09It was paparazzi and people were obsessed.
- 36:11But it's like now with social media where it's like direct,
- 36:14like celebrities posting their shit and like, yeah, it's like
- 36:18people are fucking addicted to it.
- 36:19Like it is like they're porn. Like people get off getting so
- 36:24and deeply involved in this like also fake scenario they've
- 36:28made-up in their head around these people.
- 36:31It's fucking weird. No, it's so weird.
- 36:34It's like sinister. Honestly I'm such a victim in
- 36:37that too. I love celebrity culture like
- 36:40it's. Entertaining.
- 36:41It's super entertaining. Yeah, there's just a line with
- 36:43it. It's like, obviously they're
- 36:45meant to be consumed, but it's like, I think when it comes to
- 36:49like people's like personal shit and like speculation, it's like,
- 36:53what are we like doing? And it obviously it's like
- 36:57human, but sometimes it like gets taken way too far.
- 37:01People get really obsessed. Like I think the obsession
- 37:05around it where people get so involved in or like fighting
- 37:08each other in comment section and you know what I mean?
- 37:10It's just like it's a little too.
- 37:12Invested. It's a little too invested.
- 37:14It's a little bit like, let's clock back into your own life,
- 37:17babe. Yeah, absolutely.
- 37:18Touch some grass. Touch some grass.
- 37:19We'll figure it out. Yeah.
- 37:20Stream DJ Jesus Stream. Jesus.
- 37:23First of all, congratulations on DJ Jesus, because actually, as
- 37:26of today that we're filming this episode, today is the release
- 37:28date for DJ Jesus. Yay.
- 37:30What a moment in pop culture. Wait, let's.
- 37:32Oh, DJ. Yeah.
- 37:35Different DJ. I love it.
- 37:42OK, cunt, so cunt. OK, I don't want to jump ahead
- 37:46or get too ahead of ourselves, but you know, with DJ Jesus,
- 37:49what's coming after this, We have the music video out, we're
- 37:51rolling out the singles, we're rolling out this project, this
- 37:53album. What can we expect next?
- 37:55We're so excited. Next single will be performed in
- 38:00the USA. In the USA, what?
- 38:03Yeah, what's this? One about.
- 38:06What we just talked about, you know what I mean?
- 38:09But it's a very campy, yeah, kind of satirical way of saying
- 38:14it. Oh yeah.
- 38:15I'm excited to put it out. But we're such a.
- 38:17Bold title for a song too. I know I think it might be hard
- 38:21to market, but. You know.
- 38:22Slash was talking. About that on his episode
- 38:24because he has a song called Horror.
- 38:26Yeah, impossible, right? Yeah, it's no worries.
- 38:30No, no, we keep pushing. Good art rises.
- 38:34Always, always, always, always. And it's going to keep going.
- 38:36So that's the next single that's.
- 38:38Next single. It's gonna like stay in this
- 38:40world that we're in with DJ Jesus.
- 38:42Yeah, I think so. I think like the album.
- 38:46I think DJ Jesus is kind of like the most like poppy.
- 38:50I'd I'd say the album is. It's very rock leaning.
- 38:53It's very rock leaning definitely in like a like.
- 38:57I've been describing it like like a fever.
- 39:00You can't sweat out. Panic at the Disco meets
- 39:02Chicago. The Musical meets like The Fame,
- 39:04Lady Gaga. You actually absolutely nailed.
- 39:07It you know what I mean. Yes.
- 39:08Like I feel like that's the vibe and DJ Jesus is the most like
- 39:11pop song on it. Yes, yeah, 100%.
- 39:16I was playing the album for Nathan and he was like, this is
- 39:20giving like early The Fame, Lady Gaga.
- 39:22He was like, not the Fame Monster, but The Fame and I was
- 39:23a clock. Yeah, I've been getting that a
- 39:25lot, which is such a huge compliment 'cause obviously the
- 39:27album was like so. 100% and that era of music was, in my opinion,
- 39:32the best era of pop music. It's so good and.
- 39:35You're bringing it back. Thank you.
- 39:36Oh, thank you, DJ Jesus. I live 100%.
- 39:39But yeah, it's very it's a very rockling project.
- 39:41Like for sure listening to the album, getting to know it and
- 39:44starting to live in that world for it.
- 39:46It's like it's very symph driven.
- 39:48It's maximalist. It's can't be.
- 39:50It's satirical, it's fun, and like there's a lot of rock
- 39:53elements on it too. Yeah, totally.
- 39:55But not like pop rock, like a color Clarkson type thing.
- 39:57But like what you're saying, like you actually.
- 39:59Like rock star. Like almost.
- 40:00It's almost. Chicago thing, yes.
- 40:01Yeah, Chicago. It's like a little punky at
- 40:04times. It's a little like like NCR
- 40:07Panic at the disco Queen rock where it's like the harmonized
- 40:11guitar. So like huge, like like rock
- 40:14opera. But you know what?
- 40:16I mean, definitely very glam too.
- 40:18Yeah. Oh my God, I'm so excited for
- 40:19the future video. Is that a label or investor are
- 40:21going to fund? Thank you.
- 40:24Clock, clock, clock. So what is the visual like
- 40:27aesthetic for this Aaron album? Obviously you have a very
- 40:30distinct style and like, I love everything that you've been
- 40:32doing and obviously the DJ Jesus video kind, but what are we
- 40:36imagining for this world with this album?
- 40:39I mean, I think along the lines of DJ Jesus.
- 40:43I think it's giving very like punk cabaret.
- 40:47Hell yeah. Rockstar desert trash unhinged.
- 40:53I was a bitch. Glittery desert.
- 40:55You know, like, OK, here's how I would describe if it was me.
- 40:57Let's say like you have an ATV in the desert and it's kicking
- 41:00up all this dust, but the dust is glitter.
- 41:03That's how I'm seeing that. Work.
- 41:05I live for that. Yeah, it's very like sun kissed
- 41:08desert trash fucking like. Uh huh.
- 41:12Out covered in dirt, like piles of dirt.
- 41:15Really. Yeah, it's like glamorous, but
- 41:18you're. The outfit is dirty as fuck,
- 41:20like you've been trapped out. Like the way I view it is like
- 41:25yeah, it's worn. It's like this like group of
- 41:27people living on the fringe of society in the desert in a cult.
- 41:31And it's like this cabaret circus that they put on out in
- 41:35the middle of nowhere. And it's like these songs I.
- 41:38Mean what? A world.
- 41:39You know what I mean? Like actually kind of your
- 41:41nails, you're going to be like, wait, yes.
- 41:44It's exactly that. Because I feel like right now,
- 41:47without context, it's like, huh? Yeah, what?
- 41:49Is she saying no? But honestly?
- 41:51When you hear the album, it'll make sense.
- 41:53You're nailing like what a strong visual identity and
- 41:55artistic identity too. Thanks.
- 41:57So, you know, when you started working on this project with
- 41:59Slush, like, you know, you guys are hammering it out.
- 42:02Like, was it intentional? Because I know there's a lot of
- 42:05songs on the album with like, this religious undertone with
- 42:08the titles and the lyric and stuff.
- 42:09Like, was that intentional? Because Magdalene, this is like,
- 42:12I'm not religious, guys. That's a religious thing.
- 42:15Yeah. Like how intentional was that?
- 42:21Somewhat, somewhat. I think that like, women in pop
- 42:26music throughout pop history have.
- 42:30Oh, yeah. Like referenced, yeah, religion.
- 42:34Yeah. Turned religion on its head.
- 42:36And a lot of gay artists have done that.
- 42:38And I think that like, it's just.
- 42:42I think the reason that is is like those people are the most
- 42:45oppressed by that religion. And I think that turning it on
- 42:48its head is kind of this like, fuck you a little bit and owning
- 42:53it. Yeah.
- 42:54And just like, I think like using it to your for, to your
- 42:58advantage or your narrative. And you know what I mean?
- 43:03Magdalene. The name.
- 43:04I'm just like, I'm named after Mary Magdalene.
- 43:07Oh, really? Like for real for real.
- 43:09Yeah, Madeline, I know that. Yeah.
- 43:12OK, Clock. So that was just kind of like
- 43:15natural oh, that. Makes so.
- 43:17Much sense, yeah. But I think, yeah, I think the
- 43:20religious undertones, I mean, I grew up my family.
- 43:23I grew up in New Mexico, but my family's from Texas.
- 43:25And I was always surrounded by a lot of like conservative
- 43:29Christianity. And that also shaped my view of
- 43:32the world. Not how I thought, but just I
- 43:37was very aware of. I'm happy you said that.
- 43:38I was like, Oh my God, wait, where are we going?
- 43:40You're like shit, cut the cameras, cut the cameras.
- 43:43Like wait, Charlie, I'm about to panic.
- 43:45Yeah. No, no, no, see, not you.
- 43:47Yeah, no, not me, but because I mean, New Mexico's super
- 43:50liberal, but you know, it's I have family and I went to summer
- 43:53camp in Texas whenever I was very aware of that side of. 100.
- 43:57Percent America Group in orange. County like South of.
- 43:59Oh my God, yeah, Orange County's SO hub clock.
- 44:02Clock exactly, so you get exactly.
- 44:04They're living for Trump over there.
- 44:05They're living. It's living.
- 44:07Oh my God, it's I would. Literally.
- 44:09Scary Drive home, see my parents, and they'll be like
- 44:11giant Trump cutouts in the yards of.
- 44:13People, how insane is that? Oh my God, it's horrifying.
- 44:15Because I think it's really easy when you're like surrounded by
- 44:18especially like in LA, like you're surrounded by such like
- 44:21minded people. It's like easy to think that
- 44:23that's the whole world. And it's like, it is crazy when
- 44:26you go to like a place like Orange County.
- 44:29I remember I was there over the summer and there was like a
- 44:30fucking Trump parade. And I was like, whoa, like,
- 44:33okay, work. Like, yeah, like this shit is,
- 44:36this shit is like really out here.
- 44:37It's very scary dairy. Yeah, it is.
- 44:39It's really freaky. Yeah.
- 44:41But yeah, it's just been always super on my radar.
- 44:44And I think like I've always felt a little rebellious when it
- 44:47comes to religion and I love that.
- 44:51But like I'm a very spiritual person.
- 44:52I think I feel very rebellious when it comes to man made
- 44:56religion because there's such a difference between like religion
- 44:59and spirituality in my opinion. And even like believing in God,
- 45:04like a Christian God, Like I don't even I don't, that's
- 45:08different to me than like the corporation of the fucking
- 45:11Christian Church. You know what I mean?
- 45:13Wait, I have a question. Do you feel or have you thought
- 45:16about like I just thought of this right now because it's
- 45:18never like registered to me. Do you feel like maybe
- 45:21Christians might see the project you or DJ Jesus or the video as
- 45:25blasphemy or like controversial? Has that been something that
- 45:29like you thought about when you're like, I'm just doing?
- 45:31Yeah, for sure. I know it's perceived as
- 45:34sacrilegious, and it's kind of sacrilegious in nature, you know
- 45:39what I mean? But it's a commentary and it's
- 45:41like, you know, it's meant to start a conversation.
- 45:44It's like not, of course I know what I'm, you know, what people
- 45:48are going to say about that, But sometimes I think like art needs
- 45:53to be a little polarizing and push the boundaries in order to
- 45:57start important conversations. And like, if that, if the, you
- 46:02know, reaction to that is me getting a bunch of hate from
- 46:04Christians and work, and I hope people are having conversations
- 46:07in my comment section about it, you know what I mean?
- 46:10And I've already seen that, like I've already seen people in my
- 46:13comment section kind of debating back and forth about it.
- 46:15And that's like all I want with that, you know, that's like why
- 46:18I'm, I think like I want to be the type of musician that like
- 46:21pushes culture forward, you know, that's.
- 46:23Genuinely what pop culture is. It should be, and I think
- 46:26there's a lack of it right now. Oh.
- 46:27There is, and you're bringing it back.
- 46:28Let's go. Well, don't give me so much
- 46:31credit, but. No, you are though, like I like
- 46:33I listen not to glaze you or nothing, but like genuinely I'm
- 46:37like I haven't seen another artist like debut and be so
- 46:40interesting to me. OK.
- 46:41Sunny, that's so nice. Thank you.
- 46:43I'm. Tapped in I already heard the
- 46:44song because you sent it to me a while ago but like every teaser
- 46:48you did I was like yes I was like wait I'm so excited wait
- 46:51gag like thank you Oh my God and it's just going to keep getting
- 46:55there and I'm. Excited.
- 46:56I'm so proud of it. I worked really fucking hard on.
- 47:00It incredible debut. Genuinely what?
- 47:03Like you should be proud of it. How do you feel like shaping the
- 47:05album when you guys were making it?
- 47:07You and Slush? Is he the executive producer on
- 47:09it? Him and Dylan Harrison.
- 47:12OK, how was like crafting this world together like making this
- 47:15album? It was so so fun and I think all
- 47:19of us brought because I produced 2 so we all did I.
- 47:23Saw that in the credits. Yeah, yeah, clock.
- 47:25But then the majority. But then, you know, sometimes
- 47:28it's just easier for me to get on the computer than try and
- 47:30explain what I'm wanting. But just 'cause I can.
- 47:35But yeah, I think like Sam really brought, well, Sam's a
- 47:40great pop writer. Sam makes great pop music, but I
- 47:43feel like he also really brought the like, rock of it all.
- 47:45And Sam's fucking amazing at guitar.
- 47:48And he also kind of comes from that world as well.
- 47:50And yeah, he like we really keyed about Panic at the Disco
- 47:54when we met. Like, I feel like that was a
- 47:55big. And Sam lives from musical
- 47:58theatre. Like, I didn't know that he Oh
- 48:00my God, you get him singing some musicals, baby, he'll like
- 48:02perform for you. But I.
- 48:04Need to see that. Yeah, he kind of brought that.
- 48:06And then Dylan, like Dylan is such as student of pop music and
- 48:10Dylan's young, Dylan's 21 and he's like Sam's Sam brought him
- 48:14in and he's amazing. And he's such a student of pop
- 48:18music. He has great fucking taste.
- 48:20He just like knows. He's also worked with Adela.
- 48:23Yeah, he worked with Adela. And a wife as well.
- 48:26Yes, sickening. He's everything.
- 48:28He, he's so talented. And yeah, he really brought like
- 48:33we really like connected about like Madonna and really Madonna
- 48:37like, yeah, we're both obsessed. And I feel like he kind of
- 48:41brought this like like like the early 2000s, like very
- 48:46primitive, like use of synths. Like before you could like
- 48:50program everything, like synth lines were super like primitive
- 48:53and whatever. We just like, I feel like we
- 48:54loved like like 2005 to 2010 pop music and like, but like not, I
- 49:02feel like, like the essence of it, not necessarily like making
- 49:05it sound like that, just like the essence of that era.
- 49:09Absolutely. You captured that vibe in that
- 49:11world too, because like exactly what you're saying, it's like,
- 49:14it's just, it's not sounding like that, but like the Sonic
- 49:17world, it exists there. Yeah, totally.
- 49:19And just like the. Yeah, just like the context of
- 49:22it, I feel like it just has the essence of it, but it doesn't
- 49:25necessarily like sound like it. Yeah.
- 49:28It feels very modern too, just in general, like as a whole
- 49:31projects, it sounds like it belongs.
- 49:33Like it's a very exciting thing. Exciting, bold, pop, ambitious
- 49:37debut Clock clock. I love it.
- 49:40Wait, what a New Girl? Like I want to tell you, like, I
- 49:44genuinely think it's like one of my favorite albums right now is,
- 49:46well, it's when it comes out, but like I'm so excited about
- 49:50it. Like I love cohesive projects.
- 49:52Me too, I. Love the flow of it.
- 49:54I love the pacing of it. Thank you.
- 49:56I love the slower moments on it too, like it's just like really
- 50:01well-rounded. Thank you so much.
- 50:03Yeah. I love making albums.
- 50:04I feel like for years, like I kept being told like by industry
- 50:08people, like, it's singles, music videos don't matter.
- 50:12I'm just like, honestly, fuck you.
- 50:14Like, I would rather not be super huge and make cohesive
- 50:18works of art that have sickening visuals in a world around it,
- 50:22Then like, just do. Yeah.
- 50:24Then just like, do singles, like, oh, I don't fucking care.
- 50:27Like that's just, it's not fulfilling to me.
- 50:28I'm like, then and then why am I like doing it?
- 50:31It's just not as fun. Like that's why I like, that's
- 50:34why I love pursuing music. It's like getting to make a Oh
- 50:40yeah work of art. Oh my God, yes.
- 50:42You know what I mean, Body. Of work.
- 50:43Yeah, it's so fun and fulfilling and like creative, especially
- 50:47when it's like you bring the visuals in and it's like this
- 50:49well-rounded, just like explosion of creativity and
- 50:52expression and like my, my inside my brain.
- 50:56Like it's so fucking fun. It's so satisfying.
- 50:58And then getting to perform it and like build the show and the
- 51:02costumes and the props and like, I'm doing live band again, which
- 51:06I stopped doing for a SEC. Wait, when are you performing?
- 51:09I want to see. I don't know yet.
- 51:11OK, but when you are and. I'll yeah, I'm going to be on
- 51:14tour. I can't really say with who yet,
- 51:15but. Oh my God, you're touring?
- 51:17What gaggery? This year, yeah.
- 51:20Guys, we all need to go. What?
- 51:22Everyone needs to come. We I'm so I'm the. 1st it's
- 51:26going to be so fun. I'm so excited.
- 51:30Yeah, so. I'll let you know.
- 51:33OK, yeah, we'll hold hands. Oh.
- 51:34My God, please, I love that. Oh my God, I'm I'm going to be
- 51:38pop and busty to DJ. Jesus.
- 51:40Period. Period.
- 51:41Block Okay Bestie Magdalene, I ask every guestie on the show
- 51:47what their most delulu take is. What you got from me.
- 51:50Your most delulu take could be silly, funny, controversial,
- 51:52serious, whatevs. Whatever is your most delulu
- 51:55take? I think my favorite thing to say
- 51:59to people on the Internet, because everyone gets really
- 52:02triggered by this, the Angelenos, the New Yorkers,
- 52:07everyone's always arguing about which place is better.
- 52:10And honey, I've lived in both. Fuck both of them.
- 52:14And let me just say this. It's all the same people going
- 52:18back and forth. It's all the same bitches,
- 52:20people arguing about LA people versus New York people.
- 52:23It's all the same people moving back and forth between both
- 52:27places. Oh my God, I want to defend this
- 52:30take, but I also lived in New York and I moved to LA and I do
- 52:34plan on living in New York again.
- 52:36So you know what Clock TI. Love them both but it's like.
- 52:41They're both garbage for different reasons.
- 52:43I'm like what? Everyone get over themselves,
- 52:46who gives a fuck. It's all the same shit and it's
- 52:49like the like, it's the same thing, just different versions.
- 52:55You know what I mean? It's like LA, people have a
- 52:56problem because it's like the influencer of it all and
- 52:58everyone's couch chasing whatever work that's true in New
- 53:02York. It's everyone's too cool for
- 53:04school and it's like like the like, how fucking niche is the
- 53:09shit you're making? Like same shit, just different
- 53:11versions. Both fucking suck.
- 53:13Blame. You know what?
- 53:15Not even a Zulu take. I'm going to cosign that.
- 53:17Thank you. Someone who lives in Los Angeles
- 53:18currently and someone who lived in New York.
- 53:21Like, you're so right. Honestly, at the end of the day,
- 53:23all pretentious. All pretentious, both amazing
- 53:26cities of and I think I'm I'm mostly talking about because I
- 53:31obviously have to exist in like the creative industry and it
- 53:34like that's what breeds the ugliness.
- 53:36New York and LA are huge cities that have a lot of normal
- 53:38fucking people living in them. I'm talking about, I think, the
- 53:43stereotypes that are created by the entertainment industry that
- 53:47I just happened to have to, like, be participating in. 100%
- 53:52and I see it. But yeah, there's lots of normal
- 53:54ass people in both cities. They're just normal cities, but
- 53:57we just have to participate in the worst part honestly.
- 54:00So insidious, I know. I mean, yay fun.
- 54:03I'm happy. Los Angeles and New York are
- 54:06both massive inspos for me and my project and my lyric.
- 54:09So very interesting. Like, you know what I mean?
- 54:11Like I think there's, you know how you were talking about New
- 54:14Mexico and Santa Fe. Like there is that wicked energy
- 54:18here in Los Angeles too You. Know what I mean?
- 54:21Hollywood Hills are cursed bad juju.
- 54:24Oh my God, I'm scared. Yes, and it's so creepy.
- 54:27This industry is really. Creepy sinister bitch.
- 54:31Oh my God. You know what?
- 54:31It's crazy. I'm just saying it in like my
- 54:34perception, but I bet someone's gonna like, find this in
- 54:36clipping and be like, look at the Illuminati.
- 54:38Ryan's hinting, which I'm really not.
- 54:39I am. I am, I believe.
- 54:43Okay, Clock. I mean, I trust you.
- 54:45No, there's some weird shit going on in this city, let me
- 54:49tell you. I believe you and I agree.
- 54:50With you, I don't know what. It is.
- 54:52I feel like I'm contributing to it to be honest.
- 54:54Like I know eating into the. Culture.
- 54:55I feel like the city eats me. Yeah.
- 54:58Yep, Yep, there's some weird sinister shit going on in this
- 55:01industry, I'll tell you that much.
- 55:02We got to protect ourselves, girl.
- 55:04Yes, especially women in the music industry.
- 55:07We got to take care of each other.
- 55:08Some weird shit. DJ Jesus, please save us.
- 55:11Yes, period. Wait Oh my God this has been so
- 55:15fucking fun. I love.
- 55:16You. You're the cutest.
- 55:19Can I tell you when I met her? I am not a big I love you type
- 55:22person. We said I love you.
- 55:24I I was telling her I was like, girl, I do not tell people I
- 55:26love them. I love.
- 55:27You no. When we hugged her by we're like
- 55:28I love you. I actually do.
- 55:30I just love you and I was like, I'm listening to your album
- 55:31right now. And I did.
- 55:32And I loved it so good Oh my God so fucking good.
- 55:35I'm so excited to play the fuck out of it.
- 55:37Hopefully it goes on streaming soon so we can clock those
- 55:39streams y'all. But for now we are streaming DJ
- 55:42Jesus. Well bestie bestie Magdalene.
- 55:46We close out every show by manifesting together.
- 55:49Is there anything you want to speak into existence here on the
- 55:51Lulu right now? What do you want to manifest?
- 55:56I just want to manifest to see and be seen.
- 56:01Like I just want to like connect.
- 56:04Thank you. That's just like my goal.
- 56:06Like when I think of success for myself in this career, like I
- 56:09don't think about like money or like a record dealer number.
- 56:12No, fuck no. Like I think about like the
- 56:15crowd of people I'm playing to and like, yeah, connection,
- 56:18like, yeah, to make people feel seen and like in hand be feel
- 56:23seen by them in return. And like that's yeah.
- 56:28Like that's just I really want this year, like any success I
- 56:31find. Like I just want to tour and I
- 56:33want to play shows and I want to meet people who like the music
- 56:38and connect to it. And like I want to meet like
- 56:40little blue hair freak teenagers like I was who like feel
- 56:45isolated and misunderstood and like I hope they can see
- 56:48themselves in my music and like feel like they belong in those
- 56:52like crowds. Like I just want to create
- 56:54community. I think that like people have
- 56:56lost sight that like music is nothing without community and we
- 57:00fucking need it. And like that we're nothing
- 57:03without it. And even in with artists like we
- 57:06need to lift each other up and like everyone in pop is so
- 57:09competitive and wack like it's fucking stupid.
- 57:12Competitive gatekeeping? Like not actually rooting for
- 57:16you. No.
- 57:17And I'll tell you, like, I feel privileged to have come up in
- 57:19indie rock bands where we were all friends, we all lifted each
- 57:23other up, we all toured with each other and we were all more
- 57:26successful for it. And like, we need that in pop
- 57:30music and, like, just creating connections with the people who
- 57:34listen to you and like, yeah. And care and feel seen by you.
- 57:39Like, that's very fucking profound.
- 57:41And like, I feel I'm clocking you are.
- 57:45I love like, this even small amount of people that listen
- 57:49now, like I just live for them. And they're also cute and like,
- 57:53like, they just remind me of me when I was a teenager.
- 57:56And like, I just hope I can connect with.
- 57:58Yeah, like, people. Like, I just want to be the type
- 58:01of musician that, like, I would have been.
- 58:03Yeah. Like gagging for, you know what
- 58:06I mean? You're the type of musician I'm
- 58:08gagging for right now. I'm like, wait, thank you.
- 58:09Con. Con.
- 58:10Con. Con.
- 58:11Con. Con.
- 58:11Con. So that's my manifestation,
- 58:13CNBC. OK, that's already happening.
- 58:16That's like already happened because like, oh, that's also
- 58:19real. Like I'm connecting to your
- 58:20music. I love it.
- 58:21I feel seen. Thanks honey.
- 58:23Idea like it's just so good and also I just think that's
- 58:25beautiful. You just want to be like
- 58:27community and connection to. Yeah, it's important.
- 58:29The world fucking needs it right now.
- 58:30You know what? You're so right about the pop
- 58:32scene, though. Like people are so competitive
- 58:34and like, I'm a big cheerleader. I love me and.
- 58:38I. Listen to my friend's music like
- 58:41all the time. Like I actually genuinely give a
- 58:42fuck and I care about all of it. And I just feel like a lot of
- 58:45the girly pops and the people in the scene, in the industry in
- 58:48general, like not even just in pop music or pop stars or the
- 58:51pop world, just like entertainment industry, girl,
- 58:54they're waiting for you to fall on your face.
- 58:56Like, but it's like, you can't blame especially I see this with
- 59:00women. Like, I don't think men are held
- 59:02to this standard, but like women are turned against each other
- 59:07and they're pitted. And Even so subconsciously it's
- 59:09like you go into meetings and it's like, well, it's to this or
- 59:13to that. And like comparing you to these
- 59:14other girls and these this they have this number.
- 59:17Yeah, they have these numbers. So you need to do this blah,
- 59:19blah, blah, blah, blah. And it like, it festers this
- 59:21insecurity in you and then you just like in, you know, you just
- 59:25kind of fall into like being competitive and like feeling.
- 59:29It's like ingrained in you now. Yeah.
- 59:31And you feel like, yeah, you feel, like threatened.
- 59:33And it's like we like need each other and like, actually
- 59:37everyone will be more successful if we all put each other on and
- 59:40lift each other up and like completely.
- 59:42Subscribe to that. Like, I feel like that's what I
- 59:44want to do, you know, I want to help my friends.
- 59:46I want to see everyone win. I my philosophy is we all eat.
- 59:49There's room at the table. If I win, you win.
- 59:51One person's success doesn't take away from another's.
- 59:54But yeah, it's like, it's not anyone's fault but the
- 59:57industries. It's like women are turned
- 59:59against each other. It's evil.
- 1:00:00It's evil. And I think like women have so
- 1:00:04much like. We're compared to each other.
- 1:00:07Men never get compared to each other.
- 1:00:09Men, like women are just held to an fucking insane standard.
- 1:00:11Like I was saying earlier, like propped up on this insane
- 1:00:14pedestal and then fucking crucified and like men are not
- 1:00:17held to that standard period. It's hard being.
- 1:00:19DJ. Jesus, it's hard being DJ Jesus
- 1:00:21A. Million.
- 1:00:22Percent, yeah. Oh my God.
- 1:00:23Clock, clock, clock. Period.
- 1:00:25This was incredible. What maybe I would love to have
- 1:00:28you come back on. You didn't come on with Sam.
- 1:00:30Oh my God, me and Sam holding hands.
- 1:00:33Cute. What?
- 1:00:34Yes. Oh my God, you.
- 1:00:35Have my brother. OK, wait, that would be really
- 1:00:37fun actually. We're going to do it for real.
- 1:00:40Yeah, he was here. I know.
- 1:00:42We could have done it today, but we're going to do it.
- 1:00:44We're going to do it next time. OK, Hell yeah, That's so fun.
- 1:00:46This was so incredible. Like I had the best time talking
- 1:00:48to you and. Me too, thank you for having me.
- 1:00:51Seriously, this was so cool for me because like I was telling
- 1:00:53Charlie, I told my team like, obviously my favorite.
- 1:00:55Well, I don't know. Obviously my favorite guests are
- 1:00:57the ones I'm a giant fan of, so I'm like, wait, finally I get to
- 1:01:00lock them in a room and talk about their music.
- 1:01:03So fun. Exploring your world because
- 1:01:05it's so new to me too. And like, you're essentially
- 1:01:07debuting right now. Yes, definitely.
- 1:01:10It feels like it. Oh my God, you have such a great
- 1:01:13journey ahead of you with superstardom.
- 1:01:15I know you just want to connect and we're not making success
- 1:01:17numbers, charts, stats, our higher power at all but girl.
- 1:01:21But let's get those numbers up. And they're going, they're going
- 1:01:24up. Girl, you were going to do all
- 1:01:26of it. Oh my God, I'm so proud of you.
