Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: One six point seven Light FM. Good morning, It's Christine.
- 0:03Speaker 1: I'm here with producer Kristin and Victor is in for
- 0:06Speaker 1: Cuby this morning. Victor, I would like to introduce you
- 0:08Speaker 1: to our friend in Hollywood, Harry Medvad. Good morning, Harry,
- 0:11Speaker 1: This is Victor.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Hey. Good morning, Hey, Victor, Hey.
- 0:14Speaker 3: How are you appreciate you hanging with us this morning.
- 0:17Speaker 3: We've got a lot going on, especially with some of
- 0:18Speaker 3: the biggest movies in the history of the box office,
- 0:21Speaker 3: thinking about Spider Man, the big debut last week and
- 0:24Speaker 3: obviously expecting I should say, big numbers again this weekend.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Yeah. Now, it's been crazy. Every single weekday has been
- 0:31Speaker 2: like a weekend at the box office. And I actually
- 0:33Speaker 2: want to ask you guys. People are going back to
- 0:36Speaker 2: the movies and trops. I have my philosophy of why
- 0:39Speaker 2: people are we connecting as audiences at the movie theaters.
- 0:42Speaker 2: What do you think is going on here? It's really
- 0:44Speaker 2: a phenomenon. What's happening?
- 0:47Speaker 1: Well, I think it's a sense of community, right, It's
- 0:50Speaker 1: just more fun. There's more energy when you're with other
- 0:53Speaker 1: people and enjoying an experience together, and you're giving people
- 0:56Speaker 1: movies that they really want to see.
- 0:58Speaker 2: That's important too, Thine hundred percent, you nailed at Christina.
- 1:02Speaker 2: I mean, in my opinion, Hollywood is finally delivering the goods.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:05Speaker 2: For a while, people stayed away from the movies. They said,
- 1:08Speaker 2: I can watch it at home. I got my couch.
- 1:09Speaker 2: It's beautiful and as good as streaming. So but there's
- 1:12Speaker 2: a couple of things going on. Hollywood is delivering really
- 1:14Speaker 2: great movies. So even a film like Spiderman Brand New Day,
- 1:17Speaker 2: or The Odyssey, which is based on you know, a
- 1:20Speaker 2: three thousand year old bun we all read in high school.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Many of us read in high school and forgot. But
- 1:25Speaker 2: these films feel like they feel like originals. You know,
- 1:28Speaker 2: they're like you Toy Story five, it's a fresh story.
- 1:32Speaker 2: But not only that, the theaters are just so much
- 1:34Speaker 2: better than they used to because when I was a kid,
- 1:36Speaker 2: I remember the sticky floors, the kind of like just
- 1:39Speaker 2: really gross concessions. There was nothing healthy to eat, you know,
- 1:42Speaker 2: the seats were just not moving, you know, they were
- 1:44Speaker 2: really uncomfortable. That doesn't happen anymore. It's really rare that
- 1:47Speaker 2: you find a theater like that. Most of the theaters,
- 1:49Speaker 2: I mean, in the last three years they've invested one
- 1:51Speaker 2: point five billion dollars in upgrading the theaters and making
- 1:55Speaker 2: them really beautiful, wonderful places where you want to linger
- 1:58Speaker 2: longer because there's just really great lifebies where you're can
- 2:00Speaker 2: have a drink or dine in or you know, have
- 2:03Speaker 2: a dinner date during the movie, So dinner in a
- 2:06Speaker 2: movie doesn't have to be dinner somewhere else is at
- 2:07Speaker 2: an active theater. So I'm just super excited. But I
- 2:10Speaker 2: think the main thing is that it's the slate of movies.
- 2:12Speaker 2: There's something for everyone now. Yeah, the one that I
- 2:15Speaker 2: want to talk about this week, and I mean Spider Man,
- 2:16Speaker 2: Brand New Day and Odyssey. You're still killing it. It
- 2:19Speaker 2: was a boss office all time record last weekend, four
- 2:21Speaker 2: hundred and thirty million for one weekend. Wow, crazy for
- 2:26Speaker 2: all the movies combined. But the movie that's opening this
- 2:28Speaker 2: week and that I love so much is a comedy.
- 2:30Speaker 2: And it feels so good to laugh together with people
- 2:33Speaker 2: in a cinema because you watch a comedy at home,
- 2:35Speaker 2: if you're watching by yourself, you'll chuckle a little bit,
- 2:37Speaker 2: but you're kind of looking around like where's everybody?
- 2:39Speaker 4: Yeah, you want to do a last with you? Yes?
- 2:42Speaker 2: I exactly, and comedy's work when you have a huge audience.
- 2:45Speaker 2: This movie is called One Night Only, hopefully's playing for
- 2:48Speaker 2: more than one night only at your local theater. It's
- 2:51Speaker 2: from Will Gluck, the guy who directed Easya with em
- 2:54Speaker 2: A Stone. He also did Friends with Benefits with Justin
- 2:56Speaker 2: Timberlake Emila Cunis, and his last movie was a huge
- 3:00Speaker 2: prize box office hit called Anyone But You with Sidney
- 3:02Speaker 2: Sweeney and of course Glenn Pell. This movie stars two
- 3:08Speaker 2: rising stars, Colin Turner, who you might know is mister
- 3:11Speaker 2: Dua Lipa, he's also an eternity, a really lovely romantic
- 3:15Speaker 2: comedy and Monica Barbaro, who is absolutely fantastic. Some people
- 3:20Speaker 2: are comparing her to like a young Natalie Wood as
- 3:22Speaker 2: a comedian. She's so good.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Wow.
- 3:25Speaker 2: And this movie is just a love letter to New
- 3:27Speaker 2: York City. It's shot all over the city. It's shot
- 3:30Speaker 2: in the East Village, West Village, Soho. And I know
- 3:33Speaker 2: movie locations really well. I've never seen the little Red
- 3:36Speaker 2: Lighthouse underneath the George Washington Bridge in a movie before.
- 3:39Speaker 2: I don't know how they did it. How did we
- 3:42Speaker 2: not use this as a movie location? But it's just
- 3:45Speaker 2: if you love New York. This is your kind of movie.
- 3:47Speaker 2: There's a little bit of political commentary in the movie
- 3:49Speaker 2: that I think is a little bit over the top.
- 3:51Speaker 2: It's not for everyone's taste, but you kind of just
- 3:54Speaker 2: go with it. It's a dystopian comedy. I know it
- 3:57Speaker 2: sounds crazy, but the plot of the movie is that
- 3:59Speaker 2: there's just one night a year where single people can
- 4:03Speaker 2: get together, and it's It reminded me a lot of
- 4:06Speaker 2: like I don't know if you remember, there was a
- 4:07Speaker 2: Martin Scorsese comedy called After Hours. Reminded me of the
- 4:10Speaker 2: classic screwball comedy. It happened One night with Park Gable
- 4:14Speaker 2: and plot of cultor. I love that, Christine, and you're
- 4:16Speaker 2: gonna love this movie.
- 4:16Speaker 1: I was just gonna say, I'm gonna book Eric.
- 4:20Speaker 2: I think you guys will love it.
- 4:22Speaker 4: He needs to take a night off. You need to
- 4:23Speaker 4: go to the movies. This is great.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Well, Harry brought us some great news, you know, things
- 4:29Speaker 1: to look forward to.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Thank you, thank you, and let's keep it going. The
- 4:33Speaker 2: movies are great. And just I mean just I'm so
- 4:35Speaker 2: happy because I'm so happy to see people coming together
- 4:37Speaker 2: at the movies for and the one thing I will
- 4:40Speaker 2: say is all these films have in common. They're all
- 4:42Speaker 2: about loneliness. They're all about how we have to kind
- 4:44Speaker 2: of get out of the house and reconnect with each other,
- 4:46Speaker 2: and how we need to be together and work together
- 4:49Speaker 2: for common causes. So that's why films like Spider Man,
- 4:52Speaker 2: Brand New Day and and I think this film one
- 4:54Speaker 2: night and You're gonna do great business.
- 4:56Speaker 4: Yeah, they're really resonating.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Harry Medved of the Cinema Foundation, thank you for always
- 5:00Speaker 1: getting up early out in Hollywood and recommending such great films.
- 5:04Speaker 4: It's good to talk to you, Harry. Thank you.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Same here, Christine, Thank you. Hi. Victory, have a great
- 5:09Speaker 2: weekend you too.
- 5:10Speaker 3: Thank you.
