- 0:35Speaker 2: Husker backfield. We are live on YouTube. You can also

- 0:45Speaker 2: and anywhere you can get your podcasts. Every day we
- 0:49Speaker 2: will be talking a different topic here for Nebraska Sports.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Today's topic is the backfield. We'll be going through the
- 0:57Speaker 2: running backs and the quarterback position for the upcoming season.
- 1:05Speaker 2: I want to start it off with this. All new guys,
- 1:09Speaker 2: well backups for the quarterback here with t J. Lettiz
- 1:13Speaker 2: played some games last year for US, but all new
- 1:16Speaker 2: guys pretty much in the backfield, and that leaves a
- 1:19Speaker 2: lot of question marks heading into the season. I don't
- 1:23Speaker 2: know that's a good thing or a bad thing. And
- 1:26Speaker 2: it's just really the standard here in college football moving forward,
- 1:32Speaker 2: and so we're gonna have to take some chances. And
- 1:35Speaker 2: we've seen it work out really well obviously with Indiana.
- 1:38Speaker 2: That's an outlier that is probably not going to happen
- 1:42Speaker 2: very often, but there's potential there if you want to
- 1:46Speaker 2: have the hope and be the optimist in the room
- 1:49Speaker 2: that that could work out well. And starting here some
- 1:52Speaker 2: of the key positions at quarterback and running back. The
- 1:56Speaker 2: pessimistic side is because of all these new faces and
- 1:59Speaker 2: not much stability from what the Huskers had last year,
- 2:03Speaker 2: is we don't know and is there a stud in
- 2:07Speaker 2: this room? We don't know? Starting here at the quarterbacks,
- 2:13Speaker 2: Anthony Calandria transfer from UNLV one and the Mountain West
- 2:17Speaker 2: offensive player of the year a year ago. And the
- 2:21Speaker 2: key question here is what is this offense going to
- 2:24Speaker 2: look like with what Dana Holgerson in year three two
- 2:29Speaker 2: year two and a half year three now under coach
- 2:34Speaker 2: Holderson versus what he was able to do with with
- 2:38Speaker 2: Dylan Rayola. Dylan and Anthony are very different players, as
- 2:45Speaker 2: a lot of us probably know. Dylan obviously had the
- 2:49Speaker 2: arm talent, but lacked the mobility and that really wasn't
- 2:55Speaker 2: an issue talked about much by by media the fans.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Heading in into Bill, we pretty much saw the impact,
- 3:04Speaker 2: the negative impact that it had on this offense and
- 3:07Speaker 2: lack of creativity that you could do because defense has
- 3:09Speaker 2: truly just had to play the pass. We saw that
- 3:12Speaker 2: in Cincinnati last year in Game one where all they
- 3:18Speaker 2: were given this was five eight yard passes and nothing
- 3:21Speaker 2: beat because those safeties did not have to come up
- 3:23Speaker 2: and worry about the quarterback run game. I still think
- 3:29Speaker 2: Tilan was a good quarterback and still left potential to
- 3:32Speaker 2: have a very good career in both college and in
- 3:36Speaker 2: the pros. Unfortunately it didn't work well here for multiple reasons.
- 3:44Speaker 2: I don't know, we never will know that the locker
- 3:47Speaker 2: room impact that Dylan had. Uh you know, obviously when
- 3:52Speaker 2: somebody leaves and is gone, you want to be very
- 3:55Speaker 2: negative and assume the worst case. All. He wasn't the
- 3:59Speaker 2: locker room guy. He didn't. He didn't you know, wasn't
- 4:03Speaker 2: good for the culture, and that could have been the case.
- 4:06Speaker 2: You know. You at the time, we all thought it
- 4:09Speaker 2: was the best thing ever because he was bringing in
- 4:11Speaker 2: recruits and he was the savior, and he was the
- 4:13Speaker 2: one that was supposed to fix Nebraska football, being one
- 4:16Speaker 2: of the top quarterbacks coming out of his class. Well,
- 4:21Speaker 2: now he's gone and new guys are coming in, the
- 4:27Speaker 2: key one being Anthony Calandra and what we do know
- 4:34Speaker 2: is he may or or we don't know. He may
- 4:37Speaker 2: or may not have been Rule's first pick. I know
- 4:42Speaker 2: there were definitely rumors of Kenny Minshee from Notre Dame,
- 4:46Speaker 2: and when that fell through. We'll mention there were three
- 4:50Speaker 2: guys they brought in, and Calandria had it. He was
- 4:55Speaker 2: the one that they felt, Okay, this is the guy
- 4:57Speaker 2: moving forward for our offense. Anthony is going to bring
- 5:01Speaker 2: a very, in my mind, high risk, high reward type
- 5:06Speaker 2: of game. We've had the quarterbacks that have brought the
- 5:10Speaker 2: high risk part before, even under Rule, recently with Jeff
- 5:15Speaker 2: Simms and how his tenure started at Nebraska. The key
- 5:21Speaker 2: concern with Calandria is going to be the turnovers. I
- 5:26Speaker 2: trust that coach Holverson and the offensive staff can contain
- 5:30Speaker 2: that down. But he's going to do some things that
- 5:33Speaker 2: you're going to be like, wow, that was awesome, that
- 5:38Speaker 2: was impressive, and then there's gonna be some things that
- 5:41Speaker 2: you wish didn't happen. Dylan, for the most part, I
- 5:46Speaker 2: thought was a very bal secure quarterback. We did. He
- 5:49Speaker 2: didn't turn over much until you know, towards I guess
- 5:52Speaker 2: the end of his time here and before his injury
- 5:56Speaker 2: where there are some passes that were you know, aerrently throwing.
- 6:00Speaker 2: You know, when you don't run the ball, you don't
- 6:01Speaker 2: fumble it. He had that going for him. So we're
- 6:05Speaker 2: gonna We're gonna see Calandria run the ball a lot more.
- 6:08Speaker 2: He's a He's a dual threat, true, a true dual
- 6:11Speaker 2: threat quarterback, and with that is going to potentially lead
- 6:17Speaker 2: to more turnovers, uh, play making a capability. Is there
- 6:25Speaker 2: part that we're going to see play out in the
- 6:27Speaker 2: field with the rest of the squad is going to
- 6:29Speaker 2: be his locker room presence, And again we will not
- 6:32Speaker 2: know what that's like. But if he's got good control,
- 6:35Speaker 2: good leadership of this group, nothing against those guys that
- 6:38Speaker 2: came in last year and you know, filled in for Dylan.
- 6:41Speaker 2: I I think t J. Latif obviously is still in
- 6:44Speaker 2: in the backfield and still a backup quarterback for us,
- 6:48Speaker 2: but I don't know that he was ready to step
- 6:50Speaker 2: into that leadership role quite yet or as Calandria has
- 6:53Speaker 2: that experience and has that that moxie to come in
- 7:00Speaker 2: and lead a room in year one. So again exciting
- 7:05Speaker 2: for him. I think that Calandria is going to bring
- 7:08Speaker 2: an element to this offense that can I think this
- 7:12Speaker 2: is even a real quote unlock some things that coach
- 7:18Speaker 2: Holberson wants to do. So excited to see that. But
- 7:21Speaker 2: at the same time, I'm not like, over head, over heels,
- 7:25Speaker 2: this guy is going to come in and everything is
- 7:27Speaker 2: going to be great with this offense, because there's just
- 7:29Speaker 2: a lot of unknown there's a lot of moving parts.
- 7:32Speaker 2: We'll talk about the offensive line here in future episodes,
- 7:36Speaker 2: which we've heard to have be potentially one of the
- 7:40Speaker 2: strongest units we've had in quite some time, but the
- 7:44Speaker 2: lack of potential just true Big Ten playmakers around him,
- 7:51Speaker 2: I don't know what we have. I think there's potential
- 7:55Speaker 2: there for a lot of these guys, but do we
- 7:57Speaker 2: have a top five player at really any position, not
- 8:02Speaker 2: just quarterbacks and running backs, but the top five player
- 8:04Speaker 2: in the Big Ten at any position specifically on the
- 8:08Speaker 2: offensive side of the ball. You know, maybe a couple
- 8:11Speaker 2: of those offensive linemen, maybe Luke linden Meyer at tight end.
- 8:16Speaker 2: But I think that's the question is will we be
- 8:18Speaker 2: able to mesh things well and put things together around
- 8:22Speaker 2: Anthony Calandria. The other key point here to talk about
- 8:27Speaker 2: with the quarterbacks is who's going to be number two.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Is it going to be t J. Latiff? Is it
- 8:34Speaker 2: going to be Danny Klen. I think a lot of
- 8:36Speaker 2: people might think it's going to be Latif since he
- 8:39Speaker 2: was here last year, you know, played some games with
- 8:42Speaker 2: this offense. Maybe it's more comfortable with Holderson's play calling.
- 8:47Speaker 2: But Danny Klen comes back to Nebraska after being gone.
- 8:51Speaker 2: He was played a couple of games at Virginia, started
- 8:54Speaker 2: a couple of games at Virginia last year, and he's
- 8:56Speaker 2: a homegrown kid and he's coming back. And I think
- 9:01Speaker 2: the positive here that we could take away is there's
- 9:04Speaker 2: two guys that have backfield quarterback experience division not just
- 9:11Speaker 2: Division one to Power five experience at playing quarterbacks. So
- 9:16Speaker 2: I think Calandria's the locked in number one, even if
- 9:22Speaker 2: it's not official, it is what's gonna happen. And these
- 9:26Speaker 2: two were gonna have behind him regardless of who starts
- 9:29Speaker 2: at number two, to to back up Anthony here in
- 9:33Speaker 2: case something were to happen. And I think that's solid option.
- 9:35Speaker 2: I don't. I think you know your your Division one schools,
- 9:41Speaker 2: It's it's not common to have depth back there quarterback.
- 9:45Speaker 2: You're gonna see a drop off after your QB one.
- 9:47Speaker 2: That's that's not uncommon, but to have guys that have experience,
- 9:50Speaker 2: I think is big, especially if it comes to play
- 9:55Speaker 2: in a big game where they have to come in
- 9:57Speaker 2: and get thrown in to the Wolves. Let's move on
- 10:01Speaker 2: to the running back position here. This is a unique
- 10:05Speaker 2: running back room in the sense that there's five guys
- 10:09Speaker 2: right now, and I will say truly five that we
- 10:13Speaker 2: don't know who's going to get the first snap in
- 10:16Speaker 2: that game one against Ohio and again mixed emotions. Here
- 10:23Speaker 2: do we have a stud a guy that can break
- 10:27Speaker 2: out and be your Emmitt Johnson from a year ago.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Here's as an optimist what you got to think and
- 10:37Speaker 2: trust and hope and is running backs coach E J. Barthel.
- 10:41Speaker 2: He's a developer. He knows exactly what he wants. He
- 10:44Speaker 2: knows how to train and groom running backs into this
- 10:51Speaker 2: style of back that he's after, and he did that
- 10:54Speaker 2: with Emma Johnson. We're sitting here a year ago. Nobody,
- 10:57Speaker 2: not a single person, could have predicted us to have
- 11:00Speaker 2: the year that EMMITTT. Johnson had. That being said EMMITTT. Johnson,
- 11:07Speaker 2: well it might not have been the clear cut number
- 11:09Speaker 2: one favorite. We felt that he was potentially a step
- 11:13Speaker 2: above the rest of them. These guys this year, I
- 11:17Speaker 2: think we may see more of a committee style approach here,
- 11:22Speaker 2: but we don't know. There's been some offseason movement as
- 11:28Speaker 2: far as bringing in a couple of guys we'll start.
- 11:32Speaker 2: We'll start first with the guys that played last year.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Isaiah Mosey and Makai Nelson and Quintin Ives all three
- 11:40Speaker 2: guys on the roster last year. I think all potential
- 11:43Speaker 2: to play significant snaps depending on how things go here
- 11:48Speaker 2: in fault camp. McKay Nelson had the incident that assumingly
- 11:54Speaker 2: has been dealt with with charges being dropped right now
- 11:59Speaker 2: when he was down in Florida. I do not know
- 12:04Speaker 2: and don't really have a prediction as to how that's
- 12:06Speaker 2: going to go in the season. My thought is, if
- 12:11Speaker 2: we have five guys, you know, and unfortunately something like
- 12:14Speaker 2: that's going to if you're if all things being equal,
- 12:19Speaker 2: that's probably gonna bump you down on the depth chart.
- 12:22Speaker 2: But obviously what you can do on the field matters too.
- 12:27Speaker 2: So I don't know what that means for Mikai Nelson
- 12:31Speaker 2: and his future Nebraska, but he is in that rotation
- 12:37Speaker 2: as of right now. Ptending any other news and potential
- 12:42Speaker 2: suspensions that could be coming, whether that be internal or external.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Quentin Knives is one that I think has gotten thrown
- 12:52Speaker 2: behind some of these other names here. I think he's
- 12:54Speaker 2: a very solid back. You know you're gonna hear that
- 12:57Speaker 2: his body, you know, got into better all down type
- 13:01Speaker 2: of back here, Isaamh Mosey. You know he moved his
- 13:07Speaker 2: body the other way to making himself an all down back.
- 13:09Speaker 2: When you looked at him last year, he maybe thought
- 13:12Speaker 2: slot receiver, wide receiver, moreflex guy. He put on some
- 13:15Speaker 2: weight here and has also potential to be an all
- 13:18Speaker 2: down type of back. And then bringing in Jamal Rule
- 13:22Speaker 2: as a true freshman from North Carolina, very big talk
- 13:26Speaker 2: out of the spring game. Everybody's excited to see him play.
- 13:29Speaker 2: And then with all the MacKaye Nelson news, we went
- 13:34Speaker 2: out and grabbed Tyke Hayes' former Penn State running back
- 13:37Speaker 2: was at Iowa Western, and we grabbed him a few
- 13:42Speaker 2: weeks ago here. I think the question with that is
- 13:48Speaker 2: was he acquired because of the McKai Nelson news, And
- 13:52Speaker 2: I don't think there's any reason to say the answer
- 13:55Speaker 2: to that is probably yes. Rule mentioned in Big Ten
- 13:59Speaker 2: media days. How you got to treat this like an
- 14:02Speaker 2: NFL roster. And if you have a guy that gets
- 14:05Speaker 2: suspended or hurt or there's question marks about his availability
- 14:09Speaker 2: for the season, what would you do In the NFL?
- 14:11Speaker 2: You're gonna go find another guy that can fill that void.
- 14:14Speaker 2: And and and we did that with Taike Hayes, and
- 14:17Speaker 2: who knows where he's gonna fit on the on the roster.
- 14:22Speaker 2: I think, you know, there's potential for him to have
- 14:25Speaker 2: the first snap if he picks things up very very well.
- 14:28Speaker 2: I think he's got some some talent there, just like
- 14:32Speaker 2: these other guys do as well. But his his struggle,
- 14:35Speaker 2: his hurdle is gonna be adapting to obviously the style
- 14:40Speaker 2: of play here at Nebraska and and what coach Holberson
- 14:43Speaker 2: wants to do. So all five of these guys, when
- 14:46Speaker 2: you take it into consideration, they've had less than one
- 14:49Speaker 2: hundred snaps at the Vision Division one level. I am
- 14:56Speaker 2: concerned by that, But at the same time, you want
- 14:59Speaker 2: to put trust in to what coach Barthow does here
- 15:01Speaker 2: at the running back position. If you had to have
- 15:06Speaker 2: me guess a leading rusher for this season, I'm gonna
- 15:11Speaker 2: go with Isaiah Mosey. I think he's going to get
- 15:15Speaker 2: the first snap, and I think he has potential here
- 15:18Speaker 2: to lead this backfield and has more of the higher upside.
- 15:21Speaker 2: But I think you're gonna see all these guys gets
- 15:24Speaker 2: get their opportunity, especially early on in these first three
- 15:26Speaker 2: games of the year, and in different aspects too. I
- 15:31Speaker 2: think we will want a guy that can play more
- 15:36Speaker 2: of the all down type of back but I think
- 15:39Speaker 2: this offense is adaptable enough where we'll be able to
- 15:42Speaker 2: play guys where they are able to fit in based
- 15:46Speaker 2: on their strengths. Lastly, here, if I had to give
- 15:53Speaker 2: an overall grade to this backfields unit, and I want
- 16:02Speaker 2: to preface this by saying, you know, it's all on
- 16:05Speaker 2: a scale, right so if you want a degrade, our
- 16:09Speaker 2: best backfield we've had and maybe just even say in
- 16:13Speaker 2: in my lifetime, and and you know two thousands and
- 16:16Speaker 2: twenty tens and that's an A, and then an F
- 16:18Speaker 2: is the worst. I would give this backfield right now
- 16:23Speaker 2: just a flat C and no more or no less
- 16:29Speaker 2: for all the reasons that I mentioned earlier. I think
- 16:31Speaker 2: there's a ceiling of you know, creeping up into the BS.
- 16:36Speaker 2: And I also think there's a floor that could could
- 16:40Speaker 2: fall off if if nothing really materializes into anything good
- 16:46Speaker 2: on this side of the ball. So you know, I
- 16:48Speaker 2: think you're year two and a half, year three under
- 16:50Speaker 2: under coach Holderson in his style and now having the
- 16:56Speaker 2: the tools if you were to say here, and the
- 16:59Speaker 2: pieces to on his offense. I coach Rules mentioned that
- 17:02Speaker 2: too on we haven't given Dana everything he needs yet. Well,
- 17:07Speaker 2: eventually we have to and why not now and it
- 17:11Speaker 2: needs to be now before it's too late. So again
- 17:16Speaker 2: I think potential there is there, and it's a lot
- 17:19Speaker 2: of unknown, but that's why we gotta love the month
- 17:22Speaker 2: of August and leading up to the college football season.
- 17:28Speaker 2: We'll be back tomorrow on the Return to Glory podcast.
- 17:33Speaker 2: I shouldn't say we Wednesdays are for Wacky Daki Wednesday,
- 17:38Speaker 2: so well, Dak wasn't here. Dak will be doing a

- 17:51Speaker 2: so we will see what we get with him tomorrow
- 17:55Speaker 2: on Wacky Daki Wednesday, and we back daily Monday through
- 17:59Speaker 2: Friday as we head into the season to talk about
- 18:03Speaker 2: all of the Huster Football daily topics and breaking news again.

- 19:21Speaker 1: We
