- 0:16To love letters. through welcome to love letters
- 1:04from God. Today we're going to be looking
- 1:08at Solomon's life a little more. Last week we started looking at
- 1:14Solomon's life and he was the one who wrote the book of
- 1:19Proverbs and and some of the Psalms.
- 1:24And he was a very wise man. But what we're going to be
- 1:30understanding here as we read through his some part of his
- 1:34life and he didn't use his wisdom in a in a good way
- 1:41always. So let's turn to the book of
- 1:46First Kings, chapter 4. And we're going to start with
- 1:53verse 20. Judah and Israel were as
- 2:02numerous as the sands by the sea in multitude, hearing and
- 2:09drinking and rejoicing. So Solomon reigned over all
- 2:15kingdoms, from the river to the land of the Philistines as far
- 2:23as the border of Egypt. They brought tribute and served
- 2:28Solomon all the days of his life.
- 2:33Now Solomon's provision for one day was 30 cores of fine flour,
- 2:4260 cores of meal, 10 fatted oxen, 20 oxen from the pastures,
- 2:52and 100 sheep, besides deer and gazelles and roebucks and fatted
- 3:03fowl. For he had dominion over all the
- 3:07region on this side of the river, from Tipsa even to Gaza,
- 3:15namely all the kings on this side of the river.
- 3:20And he had peace on every side all around him.
- 3:26And Judah and Israel dwelt safely, each man under his vine
- 3:34and his fig tree. From Dan as far as Mersheba, all
- 3:41the days of Solomon. Solomon had 40,000 stalls of
- 3:48horses for his Chariots and 12,000 horsemen and those
- 3:58governors. Each man in his month provided
- 4:03food for King Solomon and for all who came to King Solomon's
- 4:10table. There was no lack in their
- 4:13supply. They also brought barley and
- 4:17straw to the proper place for the horses and the steeds.
- 4:25Each man according to his charge.
- 4:30And God gave Solomon wisdom, an exceedingly great understanding
- 4:36and largeness of a heart like the sand on the seashore.
- 4:43Thus Solomon's wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the men of the
- 4:48East and all the wisdom of Egypt, for he was wiser than all
- 4:55men. Then Ethan the Israelite, then
- 5:00Heman, Chalcal, and Darda, the sons of Maho, and his fame was
- 5:07in all the surrounding nations. He spoke 3000 Proverbs, and his
- 5:16songs were 1005 also. He spoke of trees, from the
- 5:24cedar tree of Lebanon, even to the hyssop that springs out of
- 5:30the wall. He spoke also of animals and of
- 5:35birds and of creeping things and of fish, and men of all nations,
- 5:44from all the kings of the earth who had heard of his wisdom,
- 5:49came to hear the wisdom of Solomon.
- 5:54Pretty smart guy, you know, God gave him all that wisdom.
- 6:00He had asked for wisdom, and God said that was a good idea.
- 6:05I'm glad you did that instead of asking for a long life or riches
- 6:10and so on. And with his wisdom, God said
- 6:16you're going to have a long life and so on.
- 6:20Solomon used his wisdom to write Proverbs, and we have read
- 6:24Proverbs before. And but he also used it in a bad
- 6:33way. And he wrote the book of
- 6:36Ecclesiastes to show his mistakes and how his wisdom
- 6:44didn't really do everything for him that he thought it would.
- 6:49So turn over to the book of Ecclesiastes now and we're going
- 6:53to look at chapter 2. I said in my heart, come now, I
- 7:03will test you with mirth. Therefore enjoy pleasure.
- 7:10But surely this also was vanity, I said of laughter, madness, and
- 7:20of mirth. What does it accomplish?
- 7:24I searched in my heart to gratify my flesh with wine,
- 7:32while guiding my heart with wisdom, and how to lay hold on
- 7:37folly till I might see what was good for the sons of men to do
- 7:45under heaven all the days of their lives.
- 7:50I made my works great. I built myself houses and I
- 7:56planted myself vineyards. I made myself gardens and
- 8:02orchards, and I planted all kinds of fruit trees in them.
- 8:08I made myself water pools from which to water the growing trees
- 8:15of the Grove. I acquired male and female
- 8:19servants, and I had servants born in my house.
- 8:26Yes, I had greater possessions of herds and flocks than all who
- 8:32were in Jerusalem before me. I also gathered for myself
- 8:39silver and gold and the special measures of kings and of the
- 8:45provinces. I acquired male and female
- 8:50singers, the delights of the sons of men, and musical
- 8:56instruments of all kinds. So I became great, and I
- 9:02excelled more than all who were before me.
- 9:06In Jerusalem also my wisdom remained with me.
- 9:13Whatever my eyes desired, I did not keep from them.
- 9:19I did not withhold my heart from any pleasure, for my heart
- 9:25rejoiced in all my labour, and this was my reward from all my
- 9:32labour. And then I looked on all the
- 9:36works that my hands had done, and on the labour in which I had
- 9:42toiled, and indeed all was vanity and grasping for the
- 9:50wind. There was no profit under the
- 9:54sun. Then I turned myself to consider
- 10:00wisdom and madness and folly. For what can a man do who
- 10:09succeeds the king only what he's already done.
- 10:15Then I saw that wisdom excels folly, and light excels
- 10:21darkness. The wise man's eyes are in his
- 10:26head, but a fool walks in darkness.
- 10:31For I myself perceived that the same event happens to them all.
- 10:38So I said in my heart, as it happens to the fool, it also
- 10:44happens to me. And why was I then more wise?
- 10:50And then I said in my heart, this also is vanity, for there
- 10:56is no more remembrance of the wise than of the fool forever,
- 11:02since all that now is will be forgotten in the days to come.
- 11:07And how does a wise man die? Just like a fool does?
- 11:14Therefore I hated life, because the work that was done under the
- 11:18sun was distressing to me, for all is vanity and grasping for
- 11:25the wind. Then I hated all my labor in
- 11:30which I had toiled under the sun, because I must have it to
- 11:35the man who will come after me. I must leave it to the man who
- 11:40would come after me, and who knows whether he will be wise or
- 11:46a fool. Yet he will rule over all my
- 11:51labour which I toiled in, and in which I've shown myself wise
- 11:57under the sun. So this also is vanity.
- 12:03Therefore I turned my heart and despaired of all the labour in
- 12:08which I had toiled under the sun.
- 12:12For here there is a man whose labour is with wisdom and
- 12:17knowledge and skill, yet he must leave his heritage to a man who
- 12:25has not laboured for it. This also is vanity and a great
- 12:30evil. For what has man for all his
- 12:34labour, and for the striving of his heart with which he is
- 12:39toiled under the sun? For all his days are sorrowful,
- 12:47and his word burdensome. Even in the night his heart
- 12:53takes no rest. This also is vanity.
- 12:59Nothing is better for a man than that he should eat and drink,
- 13:06and that his soul should enjoy good in his labor.
- 13:12This also I saw was from the hand of God.
- 13:17For who can eat, or who can have enjoyment more than I?
- 13:23For God gives wisdom and knowledge and joy to a man who
- 13:28is good in his sight. But to the Sinner he gives the
- 13:33work of gathering and collecting that he may give to him who is
- 13:39good before God. This also is vanity and grasping
- 13:46of the wind. So here you go.
- 13:51Here's a man that's got everything.
- 13:54He can accomplish whatever he chooses.
- 13:59He's wise enough to gather all the money he wants, he can have
- 14:03all the pleasure he wants, he can build his empire as great as
- 14:08he wants. But he's going to die just like
- 14:12everybody else, and the fool that hasn't accomplished
- 14:16anything is going to die too. Both of them are going to.
- 14:22When they're dead, they're dead. Not much to feel happy about,
- 14:31but we're going to find out what Solomon will realize as we go
- 14:36through this and read this in later passages.
- 14:41He comes to the conclusion that serving God is the best answer
- 14:48for everything. As you serve God, God helps you
- 14:56through all your troubles and distresses.
- 15:00Yeah, you're going to one day die.
- 15:04But if you if you have served him, he's going to care for you.
- 15:10One thing about this love letter that God has given us is that he
- 15:15shows us the good and the bad. And in this particular case,
- 15:20he's, he's showing us that the wisest man in the world could
- 15:27not bring happiness to himself without God.
- 15:33So put God in your life, make him a partner in your life, and
- 15:41your life will prove to give you more accomplishments than it
- 15:46would otherwise. Shall we pray?
- 15:50Our Father in heaven, your love letter gives us all the
- 15:55information you want us to know, and we so much appreciate that.
- 16:02This story of Solomon shows us that no matter how smart we are,
- 16:09no matter how much money or how much education or how much of
- 16:15anything we have, if we don't have you, we really don't have
- 16:21anything. So help us to understand.
- 16:26We need you. And along with that, your love
- 16:30letter tells us that you sent your son to provide what we
- 16:36needed and he came willingly. And we're so glad he did.
- 16:41And we offer this prayer in his name.
- 16:46Amen. And that's it for today.
