- Lucas: Hello again, and welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna! Episode 32, can you believe it? Lucas: I know, time flies. Today we've got a fun topic — things you might find in a classroom or on a desk. Luna: Ooh, like what? We already learned fruits and vegetables, so this is new territory. Lucas: Exactly. We're going to learn four objects: kitabu, kalamu, dawati, and kiti. Luna: Kitabu... that sounds familiar. Is that book? Lucas: Yes! Kitabu means book. Let's say it together: kitabu. Luna: Kitabu. Lucas: Good. Kalamu is pen or pencil. Luna: Kalamu. That's nice. Lucas: Dawati is desk, and kiti is chair. Luna: Dawati, kiti. Okay, I'm with you. Lucas: Let's practice with some simple sentences. To say 'this is a book', you say 'Hiki ni kitabu'. Luna: Hiki ni kitabu. Lucas: Perfect. And for 'this is a pen', it's 'Hii ni kalamu'. Luna: Hii ni kalamu. Why hiki and hii? Lucas: Great question. Kitabu uses the noun class for 'ki-' words, so we say 'hiki'. Kalamu is in a different class, so 'hii'. But don't worry too much — we'll practice more. Luna: Okay, so 'Hiki ni kitabu' and 'Hii ni kalamu'. Got it. Lucas: Let's try a little scene. Imagine you're in a classroom and you point to your desk. Luna: Hiki ni dawati? Or hii? Lucas: Dawati is also 'hiki' — so 'Hiki ni dawati'. Luna: Hiki ni dawati. And chair? Kiti? Lucas: Kiti is also 'hiki'! So 'Hiki ni kiti'. Luna: Hiki ni kiti. Okay, so kitabu, dawati, kiti all use hiki, and kalamu uses hii. Lucas: You've got it. Let's repeat all four: kitabu, kalamu, dawati, kiti. Luna: Kitabu, kalamu, dawati, kiti. Lucas: Now let's put them in sentences. Say after me: Hiki ni kitabu. Luna: Hiki ni kitabu. Lucas: Hii ni kalamu. Luna: Hii ni kalamu. Lucas: Hiki ni dawati. Luna: Hiki ni dawati. Lucas: Hiki ni kiti. Luna: Hiki ni kiti. Lucas: Excellent. Now, a quick story. Yesterday, I was at my desk studying, and I had my kitabu and kalamu. Luna: Sounds like a productive day. I had my kiti and dawati too, but I was just sitting. Lucas: That's okay. Let's practice a little more. Point to something and say what it is. Luna: Okay... Hiki ni kitabu. Hii ni kalamu. Hiki ni dawati. Hiki ni kiti. Lucas: Perfect. You know, we learned 'nina' for 'I have' earlier. Want to try 'I have a book'? Luna: Sure. Nina kitabu? Lucas: Exactly. Nina kitabu. And 'I have a pen'? Luna: Nina kalamu. Lucas: Yes. And 'I have a chair'? Luna: Nina kiti. Lucas: Great. Let's do one more round of the main phrases. Repeat: kitabu. Luna: Kitabu. Lucas: kalamu. Luna: Kalamu. Lucas: dawati. Luna: Dawati. Lucas: kiti. Luna: Kiti. Lucas: And the sentences: Hiki ni kitabu. Luna: Hiki ni kitabu. Lucas: Hii ni kalamu. Luna: Hii ni kalamu. Lucas: Hiki ni dawati. Luna: Hiki ni dawati. Lucas: Hiki ni kiti. Luna: Hiki ni kiti. Lucas: Fantastic. That's all for today's episode of Learn Swahili with Fexingo. Keep practicing with your kitabu and kalamu! Luna: Yes, and I'll see you at my dawati with my kiti. Until next time, kwaheri! Lucas: Kwaheri! Practice these words and we'll see you next time.
