- 0:00Speaker: Actually, as the more I think about the alignment cards, the more
- 0:02I'm realizing everywhere something is vying to be a- to align us.
- 0:09Mm.
- 0:09And so it has to be, we have to be really particular and strategic
- 0:15about what we choose to have in front of our faces, what we choose
- 0:19to have running through our heads.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Welcome to the Christian homemaking podcast, Simply Convivial.
- 0:24I'm Misty Winkler, homemaker, homeschooling mom of five,
- 0:27grandma, and author of the book Home is for Hospitality: Why
- 0:32Your Home and Homemaking Matter.
- 0:34Convivial means living together with joy, and that's the kind of home atmosphere
- 0:39that we want to create in our homes.
- 0:42That's why I run Convivial Circle, a community helping women to excel at
- 0:46homemaking and do life cheerfully.
- 0:49And today I'm joined by a member of Convivial Circle, Sarah Middlestead.
- 0:54Sarah has been married to her husband, Andy, for 23 years.
- 0:58They met at the local church in their college town, and ended up staying there
- 1:02to grow in faith and raise their children.
- 1:04Their home school has graduated one student, and currently
- 1:08has two more enrolled.
- 1:10Sarah truly enjoys homemaking and loves reading, growing flowers,
- 1:14learning, teaching, and talking shop, which is what we're gonna do today.
- 1:18Thank you, Sarah.
- 1:19Speaker: Yeah.
- 1:19Thank you, Misty.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Well, this is Organize October, and we're talking all about alignment
- 1:26cards and organizing our attitudes.
- 1:29And you have quite a few alignment cards, and they're kind of unconventional.
- 1:34Some of them are a little unconventional.
- 1:36And so I'd love for you to just tell us a little bit about what
- 1:38you have going on right now for that, and how they've been helping.
- 1:42Speaker: Yes.
- 1:42So I love to write alignment cards, to put them on my
- 1:48favorite colors of sticky notes.
- 1:51Um, I've not been as great at actually reading the alignment
- 1:54cards, which turns out- ⦠that really is the most important part.
- 1:59So I find that when I'm teaching something to my kids or if someone
- 2:03asks you to come on a podcast to talk about alignment cards- Yeah
- 2:07all of a sudden you really start working hard at learning what you need to teach-
- 2:12⦠or looking at your alignment cards.
- 2:14So that's what I've been trying to do, and lo and behold, it has
- 2:19been a really helpful thing for me.
- 2:21I brought with me my current alignment cards.
- 2:26We'll see.
- 2:27Iâ¦
- 2:27This may pop up backwards on your screen, but at least these are the actual
- 2:32ones that I pulled from above my sink.
- 2:35And I even note, like, there's mistakes on them, and I'm battling
- 2:41perfectionism one sticky note at a time, so I didn't fix them.
- 2:44This is what they look like.
- 2:46Um, I'll start with the unconventional one.
- 2:49So I have this little, it's a window cling- Of Peter Rabbit and his mother.
- 2:56And I found this book at a thrift store, and it had window clings of
- 3:02the Beatrix Potter illustrations.
- 3:04And I just love this little illustration so much.
- 3:08Mother looks nurturing.
- 3:10She's taking care of Peter.
- 3:12And so I have that over the sink, over our kitchen sink, as a
- 3:16reminder to be like Mother Rabbit and be nurturing to my children.
- 3:22Um, another one I have here, it says, "God was with the boy."
- 3:28I listen every day to Jackie Hill Perry read the ESV Bible.
- 3:33It's a Crossway podcast.
- 3:35And there was one morning I was listening, and I heard her
- 3:40say, "God was with the boy."
- 3:43And I remember that was a time, it was shortly after my son had left for
- 3:48either going to his summer camp or going back to school, I'm not sure.
- 3:51But it was just such an encouragement to me that, yes, my son has left
- 3:56our home, uh, but God is with him.
- 3:59So that's another one that I keep above my window as a reminder
- 4:02that God is with the boy.
- 4:05Um, the man.
- 4:06He's a man now.
- 4:08Um, let's see.
- 4:09Would you like me to keep reading them?
- 4:11Yeah.
- 4:11I have two.
- 4:12Okay.
- 4:12Yeah.
- 4:12Um, so I have one.
- 4:14We've been talking inside Convivial Circle about excuses, and so one of my
- 4:19alignment cards is a quote from Benjamin Franklin that you gave us, Misty.
- 4:24"He that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else."
- 4:29So that's one that I have up.
- 4:30And also, when you When you go on a podcast to talk about alignment
- 4:36cards and God's kindness, he gives you a chance to use them really well.
- 4:41So this fourth alignment card that I have hanging over my sink is from
- 4:47Ephesians 4:20, and it says, "With all humility and gentleness, with patience,
- 4:53bearing with one another in love."
- 4:55Now, I have a little bit of a bougie habit that when I make my coffee in the
- 5:00morning, I like it to go in a hot cup.
- 5:02So I have to warm the water up, and I've been trying to, when I'm standing at the
- 5:07sink warming my water up that I'm going to use then to heat my coffee cup up,
- 5:13I've been reading my alignment cards.
- 5:15So this morning, we had, we had a busy weekend, full weekend of good
- 5:19things, but we were tired this morning, and I found myself just
- 5:25being really short with my husband.
- 5:28And so then I'm heating up my coffee, my- I'm heating the water to heat up
- 5:34my coffee cup, and I read this verse, and it aligns me to what is true.
- 5:43So I was remembering, and I even texted my 20-year-old son this morning, there was
- 5:48a time in our youth fellowship at church, it probably was five or six years ago, and
- 5:55I like to ask our kids, "What's something that you want to remember from teaching?"
- 5:59that they hear.
- 6:00And my, my young teenage son had said that the teacher that night at our
- 6:06youth fellowship had said, I'm gonna actually, I have to read it from my
- 6:10paper here, that, "A crooked stick will always look crooked when you
- 6:15hold it up to something straight."
- 6:18And so as I was thinking about that this morning, thinking about alignment cards,
- 6:23I thought- I don't look so bad when I hold myself up to something that's crooked.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Mm.
- 6:31Speaker: But when I held myself up this morning to Ephesians 4:2, "With
- 6:37all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in
- 6:40love," I, I look crooked because I am.
- 6:44The word of God is straight.
- 6:46And so I think that's one thing that alignment cards do is when we
- 6:51pick something that's straight, we see more clearly what is crooked
- 6:56when we compare it next to that.
- 6:59Yeah.
- 6:59So, um, that, yeah, that was a good morning, and I, I did go
- 7:05to my husband and apologize.
- 7:07He's probably around the corner listening right now.
- 7:09Um, but I think that that is what alignment cards do isâ¦
- 7:16In fact, I looked up the word alignment, and it means to put
- 7:18yourself in line with something.
- 7:20So, which is probably why you chose the name alignment card.
- 7:25Um, and so when we pick something that is good and true and beautiful, something
- 7:33that is straight to compare ourselves against, and we put ourselves in line
- 7:38with that, we're c- we're taking our thoughts captive in an active way.
- 7:44Speaker 2: Yes.
- 7:44Oh, that's such a good picture, too.
- 7:46Yeah.
- 7:47Speaker: Yeah.
- 7:48Yeah.
- 7:48Speaker 2: And we were talking inside Convivial Circle a little
- 7:52bit earlier today on the possibility of having a fake alignment card.
- 7:59Speaker: Ah.
- 7:59Speaker 2: You have-
- 7:59Speaker: Yeah.
- 8:00Yes.
- 8:01I, I mean, I think that everywhere we go something is trying to align us.
- 8:07Mm-hmm.
- 8:08Um, it's kind of like we go read the Westminster and the
- 8:14Heidelberg Catechism with our kids and we're trying to indoctrinate
- 8:19them, but we're choosing- Yes.
- 8:21what we're going to indoctrinate them with.
- 8:22So your kids are going to be indoctrinated.
- 8:25We are going to be aligned by something and so we should choose
- 8:30really carefully what that is.
- 8:33Uh, I think in particular social media is going to align us, um,
- 8:39in probably not in a way that we would want to actually be aligned.
- 8:43And it becomesâ¦
- 8:44It's sneaky.
- 8:45I think we don't always notice what is, what we are being aligned to, what
- 8:50we're putting ourselves in line with.
- 8:52Uh, that makes me think our pastor often says from the pulpit that when
- 8:57a ship is sailing if you get off by just one degree or two degrees you
- 9:04end up in a really different place than you set out in the beginning.
- 9:09Mm-hmm.
- 9:09And so alignment cards are going to keep us in line so that we're not
- 9:15getting off one degree, two degree because those add up and all of a
- 9:20sudden you find yourself someplace you did not think you were going to go.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:24Yeah.
- 9:24It's the inputs.
- 9:25Like, the inputs matter.
- 9:27Yeah.
- 9:27Who you're hanging out with- Yeah
- 9:28what thoughts you're having on repeat make a big difference.
- 9:33Speaker: Yeah.
- 9:33So I think with social media it is aligning us and not all of us should
- 9:41get off of, off of social media, but some of us probably should.
- 9:44Um, and I am one of those people just because I have an obsessive personality.
- 9:51I can't handle social media.
- 9:53Um, I don't have the self-discipline so I just don't do it.
- 9:56Um, and I, I'm thankful for that because I think it really does align.
- 10:04It's sending us messages that we align ourselves to whether we know it or not.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 10:10So do you find it's just time on screen or time reading other people's things
- 10:17or is it the messages that are there?
- 10:20Would you say that something like Convivial Circle is
- 10:24social media in that same way?
- 10:26Speaker: I would say it's interesting that you bring that up because I do
- 10:31have to be careful with Convivial Circle to not be on it all the time.
- 10:34Yeah.
- 10:34Like, it still does require a discipline.
- 10:37Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 10:37Speaker: But it, there is with Convivial Circle though, the messaging is different.
- 10:43So I think it is a two-part.
- 10:45There is the time, um, if I were to be neglecting my duties around the home in
- 10:52order to post more on Convivial Circle, that would be, that would be a problem.
- 10:58Um, but the messaging is good messaging.
- 11:03Does that, does that work?
- 11:05Yeah.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Okay.
- 11:05Yeah.
- 11:06I don't know, that just popped into myâ¦
- 11:09Iâ¦
- 11:09'Cause yeah, like, what's the, the differencing, differences there?
- 11:12Speaker: Yeah.
- 11:13Yeah.
- 11:14It's aâ¦
- 11:14And it's a goodâ¦
- 11:16I think that it is two-part, yeah.
- 11:17Mm-hmm.
- 11:18Being careful of time, ob- obsessively checking, compulsively checking- Right
- 11:23⦠which are ditches that I fall into- Yes ⦠and have to be on the lookout for.
- 11:27I
- 11:27Speaker 2: mean, there is- Yeah
- 11:28there is an element where just seeing the bright colored lights on the screen
- 11:34is itself, you know, that affects our minds, um, and is a cer- particular kind
- 11:40of distraction no matter what it is.
- 11:43Speaker: Yeah.
- 11:43Speaker 2: And then there's, you know, on, say, Facebook, Instagram,
- 11:50YouTube, any of them, there's an algorithm there- uh, exaggerating
- 11:56that tendency in the screen- Yeah
- 11:58and, um, keeping you there that can reveal Circle doesn't have an algorithm.
- 12:04So there's that at least.
- 12:05Speaker: Yes.
- 12:05I appreciate that.
- 12:06Yeah.
- 12:07Yeah.
- 12:08And that algorithm, that's aligning us.
- 12:10Right.
- 12:10That is trying to put us in line with something.
- 12:14Actually, as the more I think about the alignment cards, the more I'm
- 12:17realizing everywhere something is vying to be a- to align us.
- 12:23Mm.
- 12:23And so it has to be, we have to be really particular and strategic
- 12:29about what we choose to have in front of our faces, what we choose
- 12:33to have running through our heads.
- 12:35Um, and I think alignment cards do that.
- 12:39It helps me to take these little pockets of time when I have my
- 12:43coffee in the microwave for 30 seconds or I'm washing out a dish.
- 12:49I've been really trying to, okay, I'm actually gonna read the alignment
- 12:53cards, and I do find it helpful.
- 12:55Um, another kind of unorthodox one I've done is I realized that when
- 13:00I put sticky notes on my window over the sink, I actually couldn't
- 13:05really see the writing really because the sun was shining through.
- 13:09And so I have a few where I've taken, um, mask- like, painter's tape, and
- 13:16I have that on the molding and have written on that, and that I really like.
- 13:21Um, so I have written on a piece of tape, um, " Quick to hear,
- 13:27slow to speak, slow to anger."
- 13:30And so th- that is something that I need on repeat to see.
- 13:36Speaker 2: I haven't seen that before.
- 13:37I like that, just write, right on the tape.
- 13:39Yeah.
- 13:39And that, that tape is gonna be safe on the paint.
- 13:42Yeah.
- 13:43And it's color.
- 13:44Yeah.
- 13:45Speaker: Yeah.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Awesome.
- 13:46Speaker: Yeah.
- 13:47Yeah.
- 13:47I have found that to be more successful in actually noticing
- 13:50it, um, for those particularâ¦
- 13:54Those are less words, so it works better on the tape-
- 13:57Speaker 2: Mm-hmm
- 13:58⦠Speaker: than a full quote or a full verse.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Right.
- 14:00Right.
- 14:01Speaker: Yeah.
- 14:02Speaker 2: See that.
- 14:02Speaker: Inside Convivial Circle someone had said that they put alignment, uh,
- 14:06alignment cards on their computer.
- 14:09And I just thought that that was genius.
- 14:11And so I did takeâ¦
- 14:14So I have rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances.
- 14:19Those are cards on the computer that myself and my girls use.
- 14:24And so, and I al- I do, I choose my favorite colors.
- 14:28I choose, you have your purples, I have my blues and my greens.
- 14:31Those are the colors that I like.
- 14:33Speaker 2: That's right.
- 14:34And it draws your attention and you're like, "Oh, this is me."
- 14:37Yeah.
- 14:37Speaker: Yep.
- 14:38Speaker 2: So, like, just on the, like, the perimeter of the monitor on your-
- 14:42Speaker: Yeah, just on the perimeter.
- 14:44Yep.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Nice.
- 14:45Speaker: Yeah.
- 14:46And then because I am always battling perfectionism I never
- 14:51know what to do with the old cards.
- 14:54It seems really sad to throw them away, so I have a file folder of alignment cards.
- 14:59I don't know, someday when I'm dead and gone my children
- 15:02will have to go through them.
- 15:03They'll be all stuck together and splattered with spaghetti sauce andâ¦
- 15:07Faded from the sun, but they'll, there'll be a folder for them.
- 15:11Mm-hmm.
- 15:12Speaker 2: That's whatâ¦
- 15:12How often do you change them out?
- 15:14Or does there, is there a particular thing that prompts you to change them out?
- 15:18Speaker: Yeah.
- 15:18I, I have enjoyed inside Convivial Circle for the last couple months
- 15:23I have used the ones that you have put on the brain dump papers.
- 15:27And so I have liked doing that.
- 15:29Um, I don't really know.
- 15:31I just find quotes that I really, really like, and then I keep them up for a while.
- 15:36But when I start to not even notice them at all, that's when I've been taking
- 15:42them down and putting up a different color, um, trying the tape, trying
- 15:47putting something on our computer because I'm just, I'm getting used to
- 15:51seeing them where I always see them.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 15:54Yeah.
- 15:55That's great.
- 15:56Speaker: What do you do with your old alignment cards?
- 15:58Speaker 2: I throw them away.
- 16:00Speaker: I knew it.
- 16:01I knew it.
- 16:02Okay, but do you have, do you have something where you
- 16:04keep your favorite quotes?
- 16:06Speaker 2: Yes.
- 16:07Speaker: Okay.
- 16:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:08Yeah.
- 16:08I have a document on my computer that, where I keep, like, you know, it's a
- 16:13commonplace that's searchable basically.
- 16:16Speaker: Oh, yes.
- 16:17Yeah.
- 16:17Very nice.
- 16:18' Speaker 2: Cause I have to find all those quotes for the texts every day.
- 16:22Speaker: Yeah.
- 16:22Speaker 2: So
- 16:23Speaker: I love those.
- 16:25I, I love those too, I never delete the text thread because I might
- 16:29need that one, that one quote.
- 16:33I keep them all.
- 16:34I've never deleted a text message from you.
