Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Fully aligned.
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Uh, and that is because skills can be taught, but character can't.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to the R1 Podcast with Tony Beatros.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: Uh, today I'm going to talk about hiring in a kingdom business, what I look for beyond the resume.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Uh, if I'm building a team to help build the kingdom, then skill alone is simply not enough.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Uh, and what I will say is that uh I have personally been blessed with uh many mentors in my life and many uh an abundance of wise counsel, and uh uh uh the majority of our team members uh have come from uh uh direct referrals from uh people that I know, like, and trust, and uh who have uh values the same as mine or similar to mine.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Uh so what I have learned from hiring the wrong people.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Uh and and and let me clarify this they are the wrong people doesn't necessarily mean that they are bad people.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: Uh that's something that I think is very important to clarify.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Um, but I've hired bad admins, bad salespeople, uh uh the wrong vendors, the wrong agents, uh, the wrong salespeople, and the wrong admins.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Uh and it's ultimately come down to uh their values are different than our company values, um, in that uh oftentimes uh can be figured out if you know the right the right questions to ask up front, that can be figured out up front.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Um, but also sometimes it might take time and you might not know for a month, two months, three months um what their values are, especially if they know how to uh put on a a mask and and show themselves to to to be aligned with values.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: So our four key fillers, um filters, uh excuse me, uh are alignment with our values, alignment with our core values.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: So um uh one is uh we are very rooted in faith.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Um uh the best team members that I've found have all been hungry, uh hungry to grow, hungry for more, hungry uh to serve.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: Uh and they've also uh balanced that hunger with humility.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Uh and uh uh another thing is coachability.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: They're uh been humble enough to be coachable and to be teachable, and uh you you really can't grow unless you are humble and you are coachable and you are teachable.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: Um we also value ownership over output.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: Um if I have somebody who is performing uh but really has no ownership over what they're doing, uh, which which assumably those those will go out hand in hand, but sometimes they don't, uh then they're probably not a good fit.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Versus if I have someone who is uh maybe taking uh a bit of a uh output uh decrease, uh they're not they're not uh out if they're if they're outputting less than than was expected, but they're taking ownership, we're creating a plan, uh, you know, maybe we have to do a performance improvement plan, but uh if they're willing to take the ownership, willing to take accountability, then that's a very good sign.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Uh now they should also be a cultural and spiritual fit.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Uh we are explicitly a faith-driven company, uh, and while we don't only work with Christians, we don't only hire Christians, we don't uh discriminate, uh it it can be a good thing for them to be a fit.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: Um and they don't have to be Christian, they could just be a purpose-driven uh individual.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: Um and then our our culture uh is very uh people-oriented.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: Uh it's it's almost like a second family.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: Okay, because if if you're working eight hours a day, um you know you're spending more time with those that you work with than with your family.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: And so it might have might as well be people that you enjoy being around.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: Uh the way I interviewed for alignment is I ask questions such as tell me about three people in your life who know you and and you know them, uh, and and uh be five values about each of them that uh you admire.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: And uh what I am looking for, and this is their core values.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: Uh, when you start to see repeated values from from multiple of the individuals that I mentioned, you can get an idea of okay, this this person values uh integrity, this person values hard work, um, and and so on and so forth.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: Uh now red flags versus green flags.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, if someone is just about money, for instance, probably not a you know a good flag, uh not a good uh green flag.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: And and and and don't get me wrong, there's nothing about uh money that is bad.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: It's the love of money that is bad.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: Uh however, if you are just driven by money, you're not driven by purpose, you're not driven by serving, you're not driven by uh anything outside of money, then you're probably not a good fit.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Even though you can make great money here, okay?
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: Um a green flag might be someone who um, for instance, one of our uh core team members, he has uh extensive uh blue-collar experience where he's working very, very hard.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: Uh he's getting married within the next year, and uh he's young and he's hungry.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: And so and and and he's also uh been referred to me by a close mentor of mine.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: Um and he's uh really been both eager to put into work, he's put into work, and he uh has been humble to continue to learn.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: Oftentimes you can find that some who put into work and uh reap the fruit, uh they they they lose their hunger because they're they they they believe that they've they've made it.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: Uh and that that can be at different levels of success.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: Uh for entrepreneurs, it might be uh, you know, I made my first hundred grand, I made my first million, I made my first ten million, I made my first hundred million, I made my first exit, I sold my first company, I sold my second company, I made my first billion.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: You know, it it could be different levels, but uh whenever you feel like you've made it is when you will usually still have to be humble, stop being coachable, stop being teachable, and ultimately stop growing and start dying.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: And so personally, I'd rather hire someone who is underqualified uh but fully aligned.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: Uh and that is because skills can be taught, but character can't.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: Um so if you if you're willing to put into work to learn, to to be trained, and and you're coachable, then I can I can help you.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: But if you are not coachable, I I can't do much.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: If you're you can't help someone who doesn't want help.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: So um you know one one of one of the things for me that I uh keep top of mind is Matthew 25, which is uh, you know, he who he who is faithful with little is uh will be faithful with much.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: Uh and so this is a principle that I try to look at, both the the big pieces of my life, the small pieces of my life, every piece of my life, and say how can I how can I steward this?
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: How can I uh serve God by how I interact with this?
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: Whether it be how do I interact with this money, how do I interact with this relationship, how do I interact with um uh you know my my routine, uh a different different piece in my life.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: How do I interact?
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: How do I steward?
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: Uh and and and and ultimately um over time you'll you'll find that your team reflects your stewardship.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: So if you are a uh a good and faithful steward, uh you will you will more than likely have a uh a high quality, high performing team uh backing you because you have made the right decisions and uh who to hire, who to let go, uh how to train, how to uh equip um your people, and you'll have a strong team to reflect that and ultimately uh find more and more freedom as a business owner.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: So uh with all that said, if you enjoyed this episode, um please share it with a friend who might also enjoy.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: Uh I want to thank you so much for watching this episode, and uh I hope to catch you on the next one.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
