- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to Yukon Football and Coaches Show. Jim Morrow
- 0:02Speaker 1: with us. A little later in the show, we'll hear
- 0:05Speaker 1: from Wes Ho the center, and the d lineman Jack Barton.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Quick thought on those guys, Coach, they played their first
- 0:11Speaker 1: games in Yukon uniforms. That's always a big deal. You're
- 0:14Speaker 1: starting with a new club. What kind of impression are
- 0:17Speaker 1: you making. What was your take on Wes Ho how
- 0:19Speaker 1: he did and Jack Bartin, who had to step in
- 0:22Speaker 1: for price Yates, one of your best defensive linemen.
- 0:25Speaker 2: I was impressed with both of them. You know, Wes
- 0:28Speaker 2: had a tough task. Man that he was lined up
- 0:30Speaker 2: against was the guy. He was a big old fiscal
- 0:33Speaker 2: guy and he did a great job. And then you
- 0:36Speaker 2: know Jack played well. Jack Brian had to play more
- 0:38Speaker 2: than we want him to have to play. You try
- 0:39Speaker 2: to limit how much you're playing your defensive lineman and
- 0:43Speaker 2: trying to keep them fresh. But to tell you what,
- 0:46Speaker 2: they're both really great kids, and they're good football players,
- 0:49Speaker 2: and as we go through this year, they're going to
- 0:51Speaker 2: do some really good things for us.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Yeah, we're going to find out about them a little
- 0:54Speaker 1: bit more later in the show.
- 0:56Speaker 3: The two Minute Time out.
- 0:57Speaker 1: You must have felt like you were back in the NFL.
- 0:59Speaker 1: You got an extra time out, or they didn't call
- 1:01Speaker 1: it a warning. They called it a two minute time out.
- 1:04Speaker 2: In college, yeah, they called it a two minute time out.
- 1:06Speaker 2: But you know, I'm glad they added that rule. I'm
- 1:09Speaker 2: glad they took out the clock stoppage after a first down.
- 1:14Speaker 2: You know, I'm glad they let us have the coach
- 1:16Speaker 2: to quarterback communications system. I'm glad they gave us the
- 1:19Speaker 2: stuff on the sidelines. You know, it was a little
- 1:22Speaker 2: bit more what I'm used to in my career, and
- 1:25Speaker 2: I think they're all positive developments for the game of football.
- 1:27Speaker 2: College football, Yeah, I mean it's you know, it's nice
- 1:31Speaker 2: to have that extra time out. It changes certainly the
- 1:36Speaker 2: way that you call a game and manage will.
- 1:39Speaker 3: Not call a game.
- 1:39Speaker 2: It changes how you manage in the end of the game.
- 1:42Speaker 2: And you know, I'm kind of used to it, and
- 1:47Speaker 2: I hope I don't screw it up too often.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Can you clarify that communications system for those who haven't
- 1:54Speaker 1: been following exactly what happens, because now you can talk
- 1:58Speaker 1: to the quarterback, not scifically, maybe you can, but then
- 2:03Speaker 1: you get a defensive player you can speak with through
- 2:05Speaker 1: his helmet, but only for X amount of seconds correct
- 2:09Speaker 1: that you can actually be communicating.
- 2:11Speaker 2: So it's a coach to player communications system. And so
- 2:16Speaker 2: you can have a designated player on each side of
- 2:19Speaker 2: the ball, only one during any specific play that you
- 2:23Speaker 2: can communicate with up until fifteen seconds left on the.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Play clock or the snap of the ball.
- 2:31Speaker 2: So you're able to as an offensive coach, communicate with
- 2:36Speaker 2: your quarterback into his helmet. Now he can't communicate back
- 2:38Speaker 2: to you, but you can communicate to him in a reminders,
- 2:42Speaker 2: play calls, tips, things you're seeing, and then at fifteen
- 2:46Speaker 2: seconds it's cut off. So defensively is the same thing.
- 2:50Speaker 2: One of your defensive players can be wearing the helmet.
- 2:53Speaker 2: For us, it can be anyone. We change it up
- 2:55Speaker 2: on offense, it's usually I wouldn't say usually it's going
- 2:58Speaker 2: to always be the quarterback, which is better every team
- 3:00Speaker 2: I would imagine in the country.
- 3:01Speaker 3: So I think they're real positives for our game, for
- 3:04Speaker 3: the sport.
- 3:05Speaker 2: I also think having the ability to look at the
- 3:08Speaker 2: video immediately after a play is a real positive just
- 3:14Speaker 2: in terms of teaching your players during a game how
- 3:17Speaker 2: to play any game better and you're able to see
- 3:19Speaker 2: where you had breakdowns or what the breakdown was, and
- 3:23Speaker 2: good good teaching tools during a game.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Yeah, you were talking about the fact that you can
- 3:29Speaker 1: review video on a tablet on the sideline, which even
- 3:32Speaker 1: the NFL can't do. They can only look at still pictures. Correct.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Yeah, so that in the NFL you get you give pictures,
- 3:40Speaker 2: and you know you can you get a pre snap,
- 3:43Speaker 2: you get a post snap, you get it into the
- 3:45Speaker 2: snap photos so you can see what's going on. But
- 3:49Speaker 2: we are able to use video, and so we are
- 3:52Speaker 2: able to get a sideline angle, an end zone angle,
- 3:57Speaker 2: and a broadcast angle of every play immediately. And now
- 4:02Speaker 2: we don't look at it immediately because you don't have time.
- 4:05Speaker 2: You look at it between series, but it provides you
- 4:07Speaker 2: with a ton of information that's really really helpful. And
- 4:11Speaker 2: you know, I mean, listen, we're not gaining an advantage
- 4:15Speaker 2: because our opponent has the same thing, but it's very
- 4:17Speaker 2: helpful in terms of teaching your players during a game.
- 4:20Speaker 2: What adjustments are necessary for us to have success.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Let's talk about the Merrimack Warriors here. Quickly they lost
- 4:27Speaker 1: at Air Force. They were down twenty one to nothing.
- 4:29Speaker 1: They scored on the final play of the game twenty
- 4:31Speaker 1: one to six final. Their head coach, Mike Chimetti, has
- 4:35Speaker 1: been at Merrimack a long time now, the head coach
- 4:38Speaker 1: for the first time. He was a defensive coordinator for
- 4:41Speaker 1: all those years, a lot of those years. They're a
- 4:43Speaker 1: team that's won their a conference, the NEC or got
- 4:46Speaker 1: to the championship game back to back years, so there's
- 4:49Speaker 1: some tradition of winning there. And you know, from what
- 4:53Speaker 1: I'm seeing and reading and doing a little research here,
- 4:56Speaker 1: they're pretty good defensive team. I mean, they held air
- 4:59Speaker 1: Force to just three scores.
- 5:01Speaker 3: They're a very good defensive team.
- 5:03Speaker 2: You know, as you said, Mike is a defensive guy
- 5:06Speaker 2: who's a deemsive coordinator or a linebacker coach or assistant
- 5:09Speaker 2: head coach and a dB coach. I mean, so he's
- 5:12Speaker 2: been in a defensive role his career and you know
- 5:16Speaker 2: they play that way. They're very physical, they're gritty, they're tough,
- 5:21Speaker 2: they know what they want to be on defense. They're
- 5:24Speaker 2: gonna come up and play a lot of bump and
- 5:25Speaker 2: run and challenging. They're gonna be physical in the line
- 5:28Speaker 2: of scrimmage. They're going to tackle well. And you're right,
- 5:32Speaker 2: there's when there's a tradition of winning and you get
- 5:35Speaker 2: used to winning, you know how to win. I mean,
- 5:37Speaker 2: that's the hell of an advantage. And they've done a really,
- 5:41Speaker 2: really fine job there of cultivating a culture where you know, hey,
- 5:46Speaker 2: they expect to win regardless of who they're playing. So
- 5:48Speaker 2: it's gonna be one great challenge for us. I think
- 5:50Speaker 2: our guys are excited about it. I know we'll be
- 5:53Speaker 2: up for it. And it's gonna be a tough task.
- 5:56Speaker 2: And you know what, we need a tough task after
- 5:59Speaker 2: that game the other day. We need to come out
- 6:01Speaker 2: and play a good team and we need to play well,
- 6:04Speaker 2: and I expect that we will.
- 6:06Speaker 1: You talked about being aggressive, not passive. You want to
- 6:09Speaker 1: see a lot of body language energy. How does that come?
- 6:14Speaker 1: Where does that come from? Is that the leaders of
- 6:16Speaker 1: your team putting it in people's minds or just setting examples.
- 6:21Speaker 2: It's got to come from each and every individual on
- 6:23Speaker 2: your team. You know, it comes from within. I mean, yeah,
- 6:27Speaker 2: your leaders have to demonstrate it, but you know, you
- 6:31Speaker 2: either have it or you don't. And I want guys
- 6:34Speaker 2: that have it and that juice, that passion, that emotion,
- 6:38Speaker 2: that that intensity, you know that game day spirit. If
- 6:43Speaker 2: it doesn't matter what the score is. I'm always going
- 6:45Speaker 2: to play the same. I'm always going to be the same,
- 6:47Speaker 2: I'm always going to act the same. I'm going to
- 6:48Speaker 2: bring the same energy. And you have to cultivate it.
- 6:52Speaker 2: You have to talk about it, you have to demand it,
- 6:54Speaker 2: and then your guys got to be about it. And
- 6:57Speaker 2: I expect it to be a lot better on Saturday.
- 6:59Speaker 2: You know you're going to get down in some games, right,
- 7:01Speaker 2: I mean, it's going to happen as football, it's any
- 7:05Speaker 2: competitive sport. There's gonna be some games where it's tough sledding.
- 7:08Speaker 2: And if you can't overcome adversity, then you're not going
- 7:13Speaker 2: to be successful. And that's been.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Anything in life, as we all know.
- 7:16Speaker 2: So it's just trying to teach these young men what
- 7:20Speaker 2: it takes to be successful not just on Saturdays on
- 7:22Speaker 2: the football field, but you know, every single day in
- 7:25Speaker 2: their lives as players, as people, as fathers, as sons,
- 7:30Speaker 2: as eventually husbands, you know, and Mike, you know, it's
- 7:35Speaker 2: not easy and uh, you can't get down, man, you
- 7:38Speaker 2: got to keep fighting. So we're just trying to teach
- 7:40Speaker 2: them that all the time.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Now I'm with your coach, Nothing worth having comes easy,
- 7:45Speaker 1: as that's a fact of life, all right, We appreciate you.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Wes Hoe.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Coming up, Jack Barton, We continue with the Yukon Football
- 7:51Speaker 1: Coaches Show in just a moment onlear Field,
