- 3:00Welcome back to the Duckfellas Podcast, episode 15. And we got Fuki back.
- 3:08Hey, guys. What is up, my guy? It's good to be here.
- 3:13Anyways, fuck that guy.
- 3:17Damn. Bro. Wow. Gotta let him rip right away. I guess. My God.
- 3:24So how you been, Fuki? I was so pumped to see both of you.
- 3:28To you guys tonight too i feel like it's been way too long and then just immediately
- 3:32i'm getting harassed oh it's yeah it's been too long all right i guess it does
- 3:38happen like that what have you been up to pookie nobody's nobody's seen you
- 3:42in a while work tired working in the cold,
- 3:48that uh that was no fun i know that feeling all too well oh look at that your
- 3:54acorn cow buddies are Sticking up for you. Yeah, good.
- 3:59Coming in for the defense. Be nice to Pookie. I need all the help I can get.
- 4:05See, told you your fans missed you. Got to give the people what they want.
- 4:11It's all right, guys. I'm back. Don't worry.
- 4:14I'm sure the last one sucked. Whoa!
- 4:20Maybe a little bit. The last one kind of sucked because Zach was here.
- 4:24Fair point. Poor guy. No hope.
- 4:32So, what do you have going on there, Cade? Oh, just working on race car shit now.
- 4:40It's pretty much like we get done racing, I flip the switch to hunting season,
- 4:43and then get done with hunting season, and I flip the switch right back to race car shit.
- 4:51It's just a nonstop grind, dude.
- 4:54Yeah, that sounds terrible. Just a constant cycle of spending a shitload of money.
- 4:59Yes, yes. I just got part of my engine bill back today, and I was like, Yeah,
- 5:06that one sucks. I am financially irresponsible. Let's go buy a new shotgun.
- 5:15That's a good idea. It is. It's a great idea. Got any ideas on what you're going to buy yet?
- 5:21I'm leaning towards the Maxis. I don't know which one I want to get.
- 5:24The Wicked Wing is sexy. I'm going to be so mad if you get it before I do.
- 5:32Honestly, I've heard a lot of good things about the Weatherbeast,
- 5:34too. I was looking at those at Shields. They're substantially cheaper.
- 5:39Have you talked to Dawson about the G-Force?
- 5:44Yeah, I shot his, and I'm sure I could get used to it, but I didn't love it.
- 5:49I shot it one day out in Altoona, and I was like, eh.
- 5:53Your gun you got now is a gas gun, isn't it? Yeah. Yeah, that makes it a little
- 5:58harder to get used to the Minertia guns. Mm-hmm.
- 6:01If you don't have it shouldered just right, it will not cycle.
- 6:04Yeah. Yeah. I didn't have any problems with that, but just...
- 6:08Probably just from it being gas to inertia, it was... It felt so fucking weird. Mm-hmm.
- 6:17Well, I should be closing on the house on Friday. Good news.
- 6:22Good news. Fingers crossed. Straight to homeless.
- 6:25I can't wait to be homeless, honestly. I know Ellie's looking forward to it.
- 6:29She's been just sleeping on random people's couches anyways.
- 6:32Well, if you need us, don't call us. No, I definitely don't plan on calling you. Yeah, good, good.
- 6:39Little to no help.
- 6:41Let's move into like some of the news around the hunting world right now.
- 6:45Regular waterfowl season is coming to a close here pretty quick all over the country.
- 6:50I know the Central Flyway goose season is still open. I think that goes to like
- 6:55the 15th of February or so.
- 6:58And everyone else is switching gears to little white devils.
- 7:03Yeah, the white devils. That's another interesting topic right now.
- 7:08All the controversy.
- 7:12Yeah I'd say there's Quite a bit of that right now,
- 7:17I haven't had much time to look into it So you're gonna have to Take the reign,
- 7:24So obviously they had the What is it?
- 7:27World Championship Snuggles hunt What do they call it nowadays?
- 7:31I think it's something like that.
- 7:34So every team I guess I'm not too hip on it either But every team has a judge
- 7:40that gets assigned to them that goes out with them on their hunt to make sure
- 7:43there's no cheating and that everything goes well.
- 7:47So it was a group of younger guys. Like, I think the oldest guy was 20.
- 7:50So all pretty young group of guys won the contest with 94 or 96 birds.
- 7:58But supposedly they did not tag their birds correctly, which I think is,
- 8:06To me, in the conservation season, I mean, why do your birds need to be tagged?
- 8:09Because as long as all the birds are with you, you can kill as many as you want,
- 8:14basically however you want.
- 8:17Yeah, that doesn't really make sense. Like you're saying, there's no limit, obviously.
- 8:22They have a judge with them. I don't understand why you would have to tag them.
- 8:26Right. I mean, maybe just to make sure that they don't stop and kill a couple
- 8:31or pick a couple up in a ditch on the way back to max sherrywings?
- 8:35The judge would know that, right?
- 8:37But it depends on if he's riding a different vehicle or not.
- 8:40There are 10-man teams, so I don't think everybody can fit in one vehicle.
- 8:44Right, but you would still know when you leave the field what you have for him.
- 8:47How many do you have? Yeah. Yeah.
- 8:50Yeah, I don't know. It's a huge deal right now for the Snow Goose guys that competed in that.
- 8:57I know Web's – I've seen a post. Webb's Sporting Goods is stepping up and putting
- 9:03something together for what they're calling the real winners.
- 9:08So, it's pretty bad.
- 9:14Max is taking a huge hit right now just because they just got bought out by
- 9:17the same people that own Bass Pro and Cabela's.
- 9:20Yeah. So they're saying, like a lot of people are saying it was rigged,
- 9:25set up, they wanted, who they wanted to win.
- 9:28And those guys, I think only had two or three less birds. Like I think I've
- 9:32seen a number of 92s, what their total bird kill count was.
- 9:36So it wasn't like it was a landslide victory for the kids. And then these guys
- 9:40were just happened to show up with a few birds and ended up winning.
- 9:44Right I don't know we'll see
- 9:47what comes out with it but I that's I seen
- 9:50that last night and I was like wow that is wild yeah I'll
- 9:53be curious to see like what continues to come out with this and maybe if it
- 9:57wasn't a rule specifically for this competition or something like that where
- 10:02even though it was in the like where it doesn't really matter to tag birds but
- 10:07maybe that was a rule like when they entered this competition yeah that that caused all this,
- 10:14that's the only way it really makes sense, honestly.
- 10:17It has to be something like that. I mean, I guess, I don't know,
- 10:20I don't really snow goose hunt anymore, but maybe we did it wrong when we did do it.
- 10:25We never tagged our birds down there for transport. I mean, you can kill as
- 10:28many as you want and more or less however you want, so why would you worry about
- 10:32tagging them? Yeah, no shit.
- 10:35Seems like a lot of extra work. Yeah.
- 10:39Yeah, but anyway, I mean, Hats off to the guys that ended up winning it,
- 10:44and then hats off to the younger group of guys that got, I guess,
- 10:48I don't know if they got disqualified completely, but, I mean, still a good day.
- 10:54You kill 90 birds in a day, that's pretty awesome.
- 10:57Yeah, that's pretty badass. We definitely could have done that goose wars if
- 11:00we would have been able to.
- 11:02Yeah. Now, that would have been wild. I mean, 90 honkers in a hunt, that's crazy.
- 11:0890 snow geese is cool but not near as
- 11:11cool as 90 honkers would be no 90 yeah that
- 11:14would be disgusting this poor garage would look like a
- 11:17pillow factory dude i'd be sick when it came to cleaning birds i don't know
- 11:22i wouldn't be able to make it no we definitely would have like had to make everybody
- 11:27that was involved come help like oh you're not sticking the three of us or i
- 11:34think Zach came over too.
- 11:35So four of us with 90 birds. Can you imagine that?
- 11:40Absolutely. Terrible. Terrible.
- 11:44Obviously, flooded corn is a raging topic still.
- 11:49All over Facebook and social media. I mean, it's going crazy right now still.
- 11:55I don't look to see it die off for a while. I look to see it be a big issue
- 12:00for the whole entire offseason and if not in the duck season next year. Oh, it'll go.
- 12:06Until something changes or it doesn't change and it gives people a reason to
- 12:12shut up, it's just going to keep going until something happens. Yeah.
- 12:16I mean, it's going to take a pretty big study by some pretty reputable biologists
- 12:20to come out and say, that is not the problem.
- 12:23Or, yeah, no, that's the problem. Let's fix it. yeah even
- 12:28then do you guys feel like you heard less about
- 12:31it though when the south guys
- 12:34just got all that weather and just got a massive push of
- 12:37birds because i feel like for that week
- 12:40where they were just getting hammered with snow and it seemed like everyone
- 12:45that i follow or or watch from the south were just absolutely murdering birds
- 12:51down there and for a week straight i didn't hear anything about flooded corn. I've still seen it.
- 12:57Yeah, I personally don't pay much attention to the down south stuff,
- 13:01but I still saw plenty of memes making fun of it. Yeah. Uh,
- 13:07I don't know. I talked to a few guys down there that said they didn't really
- 13:11see an influx in birds, but then you got some people that say they did see some. Who knows?
- 13:17I mean, obviously, we're not there, so I don't know if you guys know anybody
- 13:20down there that hunts. Mm-mm. Nope.
- 13:23Trash. I know. But while we're on that topic, Pookie, since you weren't here
- 13:28last week, let's hear a little bit of your input on flooded corn and your take
- 13:33on it, just quick. Oh, gosh.
- 13:37I'm so tainted in this subject because all I have to listen to is you two with it.
- 13:44So do I think that it affects birds? Yeah, absolutely.
- 13:47I do. Like, is somebody going to actually put in the time to do the study and come out and say that?
- 13:53Who knows? It's going to have to be somebody a lot more important than us and
- 13:56with a lot more money and time than we have. That's a fucking fact.
- 14:00I don't know. If Cade would just quit spending money on race car stuff,
- 14:04Maybe he could help fund that study. That would definitely help for sure.
- 14:08You know, for a fact that if I quit spending money on your words here,
- 14:15my beer money, if I quit spending money on that, I just spend it on duck hunting shit. You know, this.
- 14:21That sounds like a way better plan. Yeah, but I wouldn't spend it on that.
- 14:25I'd spend it on boats and shit.
- 14:28Boats and hoes. We have to have something to do during the summertime.
- 14:32That is fair. That is fair.
- 14:35Yeah. Yeah. Another one that I've seen kind of step into the light recently has been motion decoys.
- 14:42I know we played on touching on that here towards the end of the episode.
- 14:46But I've started to see people ask, like, why are these still legal or why are
- 14:50they banned? in certain areas. Yeah.
- 14:54That's starting to become an argument in that. It seems like more and more.
- 14:57I feel like motion decoys are like how cell cams were like a couple years ago,
- 15:04where it's just this big wave and then you'll see individual states start to
- 15:09ban them and then everybody just kind of collectively goes in or kind of follows suit with it. Yeah.
- 15:15The worst thing is like I've always hunted places that you can use that shit
- 15:20so I have no experience without it.
- 15:23Yeah, I've never hunted anywhere you can't use them.
- 15:28Well, let's jump into this episode here.
- 15:32We're going to talk a little bit about some of the springtime meetings coming up for the Iowa DNR.
- 15:40It's kind of a thing that a lot of people, once hunting season's over,
- 15:44they just forget about it.
- 15:45And then come October, they're like, oh shit, it's hunting season and go right
- 15:49back to it and right back to bitching about the same stuff.
- 15:52Yep. And they say, oh, I wish they'd change this. Well, nothing's ever going
- 15:57to change until we go out and do something about it or voice your opinion in
- 16:02person to some people that have the power to make changes.
- 16:07I know the DNR is going to be conducting a series of meetings here.
- 16:12Was it the beginning of March we talked about?
- 16:15Yes. I think it's early March. We don't have exact dates yet,
- 16:19but I know as soon as we get those, we'll get a little spreadsheet built up
- 16:23and put it on here for display and on our page.
- 16:27We will blast that shit.
- 16:31100%. Nobody that follows us or is in touch with Iowa hunting will have the
- 16:40excuse that they didn't see it. I like that.
- 16:43I mean, the biggest thing is these meetings are, it's a way for everyone to
- 16:48get out there and make arguments towards any of the things that you want to see changed.
- 16:53Right. You know, bring some facts to the deal. Don't just show up and say,
- 16:58we don't want flooded corn. Cancel it.
- 17:03That's not quite how that works. Yeah, it's definitely not going to work.
- 17:06Or we want our season to start a month later.
- 17:11You got to have reasons why. Right. Or a little bit of facts or evidence.
- 17:17If you have photos and videos of just massive amounts of ducks in your area,
- 17:22either before the season starts or after the season starts, whatever you're
- 17:24for, whether it's earlier or after, then bring it with you. Show it to them.
- 17:30And the biggest thing is, too, Like, if you're wanting to make a month swing,
- 17:34that's probably a little too far out of touch.
- 17:38Like, you got to take it in smaller increments than that.
- 17:42Yeah. From what I've learned in the past, smaller bites, smaller nibbles at
- 17:46a time is your higher success rate when it comes to anything with the government.
- 17:51Yeah. Anything with the government. Mm-hmm.
- 17:54So let's start with Pookie here, just because I like picking on him.
- 17:57What is one thing that you'd like to see change in Iowa for waterfowl hunting?
- 18:03I don't necessarily know if I can or, like, have one thing specifically that
- 18:10I would like to see change.
- 18:11One thing that I think will change is how long our season is.
- 18:16Like, I think that'll be the first thing that we do see change.
- 18:21And I mean really yes it's less hunting but,
- 18:26I'm fine with it like I understand
- 18:30like why they would be doing it or the science
- 18:33that is behind the reasoning for it so to me being a very logical person and
- 18:40numbers and everything like I mean it makes sense when you think about it so
- 18:45yeah I don't necessarily know if there's like one thing that I'm like,
- 18:50oh yeah, no, I would really like to see this change, but I do think that our
- 18:54season will get shorter.
- 18:56Yeah, a lot of people are not going to like that. No. No.
- 19:01The thing is, though, like, obviously your number of days goes down,
- 19:06your opportunity goes down, but if they time it out right
- 19:09and you can get the season in that right kind of sweet spot where everybody's
- 19:12happy, I feel like that'd be better for everything, honestly.
- 19:17Better for the Ducks, better for our mental health.
- 19:24Yeah, that's going to be a thing, though, where we really got to push on them
- 19:27to where if the federal government is going to push that down the line to shorten
- 19:35the seasons in the flyways,
- 19:37then we'd like to have a voice in when the season starts, right?
- 19:41Right. So, I mean, the only way you're going to have that voice in it is by
- 19:44telling them, like, look, we've heard mumblings of this.
- 19:47Can you give us the proposed dates where if we go to a 45-day season or a 30-day
- 19:52season, what are you looking at for dates or what are you going off of to pick your dates? Right.
- 19:59So that'll be, I mean, I do see that possibly happening too.
- 20:03Who knows? I mean, I'm telling you.
- 20:06To me, really, like you're never going to please anyone anyways.
- 20:11So it's going to get shorter at some point, like whether we like it or not.
- 20:16Like I think that that's a very real thing and that's absolutely going to happen.
- 20:20But at the same time, like you're always going
- 20:23to have people that'll bitch and complain about it but they're
- 20:26the same people that you don't see out of the boat ramp when it's 10
- 20:29degrees outside and november so like we're gonna have people complain but how
- 20:36many like i would be curious to see what percentage of hunters actually maximize
- 20:43that whole 60 days even when it gets cold out even when it sucks like.
- 20:49There's 60 days and i know for a fact that there is
- 20:52not many people that hunt more than tyler anyways
- 20:56and you didn't even hunt all 60 days this year no
- 21:00i actually hunted honestly less this year than i did
- 21:02last year i'm pretty sure yeah still had
- 21:05just about as much time off but i mean there was a lot
- 21:08of days we just didn't go that kind
- 21:11of goes on the same thing too though like you and i are both completely against
- 21:16hunting in the rain what did we do this year every time it rained we were out
- 21:20duck hunting because we were like well we got nothing better to do beats sit
- 21:23on the couch let's go it yeah but i got smarter and i bought rain gear for that last year before,
- 21:32see my rain gear took a yeah yeah so i'm gonna put that on your bucket list
- 21:38of things to buy this summer also?
- 21:41Yes. Yes, absolutely. We may say we're not going in the rain.
- 21:44We will. We tend to almost always go in the rain. Yeah. We will.
- 21:48It's fucking terrible. Or the snow. That snow was so fucking wet.
- 21:53That was the heaviest snow. That was one of the heaviest snows that I've hunted
- 21:55in. I know we've talked about that before, but that was wild.
- 21:59It was snowing softballs.
- 22:01Wasn't it? Did my dad say gerbils?
- 22:05I forgot about that. Yeah. that was good,
- 22:10so what's did you ever touch on what you wanted to see change or what you thought might change,
- 22:16what I would like to see if it stays the way it is and this is something that we've talked about,
- 22:21before I feel like our lake I'm probably going to steal this from you so you
- 22:25should have went before me but I feel like our lake should be in the south zone
- 22:30it is the biggest lake in Iowa,
- 22:33that what I would love to see is everything gets pushed back a week.
- 22:39And then our lake gets shoved in a south zone. That would be ideal.
- 22:44Will it happen? Probably not. We might get one or the other.
- 22:47Yeah, I don't know. If we get enough people behind that, I think that is the
- 22:50one thing that's very possible for us to push through. Yeah.
- 22:53I mean, this is the year to make those changes. You have to make them this year.
- 22:56Otherwise, it's five years from now. Yeah.
- 23:00I was going to pick that one, but then I realized that one of you two jackasses
- 23:05would probably take that one, so I can pick my own. Ha ha ha ha ha,
- 23:11We'll touch more on yours here after this because I have that wrote down to
- 23:14really talk about and present because it's one of our biggest things we're all
- 23:19pushing for. And a lot of people we hunt with push for.
- 23:23Mine is I'd like to see the Iowa DNR come up with a way where we can track how
- 23:30many birds are actually harvested in Iowa a year and in like regions.
- 23:37Like say Riverton like all your big areas what is it Riverton Hawkeye Saylorville
- 23:43Red Rock yeah you got the areas over there in Mississippi drawing a blank on
- 23:49those for some reason right now,
- 23:51but I'd like to see a way for us to be able to track that better for harvest numbers to,
- 23:56help allocate funds properly to areas
- 24:00that are producing the most hunters and the
- 24:02highest number of birds harvested a year in general
- 24:05what you mean the the 10 plus that
- 24:08we put on the the hip registration isn't good
- 24:11enough but it helps out a ton for the
- 24:14guy that hunts three times a year right i mean
- 24:18i don't know you you can't you can't tell me that it wouldn't be super easy
- 24:26to add like four more options in each one of those questions because all of
- 24:32that data gets transmitted electronically through that app that goes
- 24:36immediately into a spreadsheet anyways.
- 24:39Like, I don't know.
- 24:40To me, that would be a really easy, like, realistic fix that we could have.
- 24:46Yeah, dude, you could literally do, like, the normal ones they have,
- 24:50but instead of 10+, you do, like, a 10 to 25, and then a 25 to 50.
- 24:54It wouldn't be that hard. Right.
- 24:56Or custom, then enter in your own number. Right.
- 25:01Yeah, so not everybody actually tracks all that too either.
- 25:08No. I would say you would definitely want to keep it in a range personally because
- 25:13I would rather have it in a range than people guess and guess wrong because
- 25:18then your numbers are more inaccurate in my opinion.
- 25:25So here's another thing, which August says this here.
- 25:31August Bach said Odessa had a country daily count board when you got back to the ramp.
- 25:39Yeah, so a daily count board, which keeps tracks of how much each party kills a day, I'm guessing.
- 25:45That's what I was going to talk about next was we had a setup similar back home
- 25:49where we had sign-in boxes.
- 25:51And in those boxes, there was kill cards, which you signed in.
- 25:56Each person that was hunting signed in that day, a time in and a time out.
- 26:00And then you filled out a little harvest card for each hunter.
- 26:05And it has every species of bird on there for ducks and geese.
- 26:10And you put down how many of each that you killed, and you submitted it in a little box.
- 26:14I mean, call me crazy, but I don't think that would be that hard for the biologist
- 26:18of that area to swing in there once a week, grab the cards.
- 26:23Here's an even crazier idea. They have these cool things called QR codes.
- 26:27You can do it all on your phone nowadays.
- 26:30Technology's wild. Yeah, dude, it'd be so easy for them. It wouldn't even be funny.
- 26:34You know what? I'll just set up the big whiteboard out at the ramp,
- 26:37and we'll just make everybody make tallies on it.
- 26:42There's Pookie. He's back. Yep.
- 26:44He just wants the whiteboard so he can sit behind it and huff the marker.
- 26:49Definitely getting the non-toxic ones out there. Yeah. I'm going to have to be child-friendly.
- 26:55I mean, I think that's our biggest downside right now in Iowa is we have no
- 26:59way to actually track birds.
- 27:01They put out these harvest reports every year, right?
- 27:04Where are they pulling those numbers from? I have no idea.
- 27:08It's just a guess. Yeah. It's just an approximate number by what people are
- 27:13putting down on their hip registration, I'm guessing.
- 27:16Yeah. I mean, like at Red Rock, you have the biologist there damn near every
- 27:22day testing for bird flu.
- 27:24So he has a rough idea, but it's not like he's digging through everybody's ducks
- 27:28like, hey, did you guys shoot your limit today?
- 27:30Yeah, but you know how many times I've told that guy we didn't kill shit because
- 27:32I didn't want him telling everybody else the boat ramp? Yeah.
- 27:36Because he does he'll tell you exactly how the party before you did exactly
- 27:40or five parties before him yeah I mean that guy with the white Ford over there
- 27:45how many did he shoot today?
- 27:46Well ten yeah yeah I mean I'm all for like figuring out what areas are doing
- 27:55the best so that we can allocate funds and or allocate resources to those areas
- 28:00or other areas that are doing worse to try and make the numbers better right? Right.
- 28:05But I'm not all about, I'm not like, I'm not going to sit there and tell everybody
- 28:08exactly how I do every single day.
- 28:09Like, I'll tell the state what we're doing every day so that we can figure that
- 28:14out. Unless it's that biologist.
- 28:18Yeah, but he's not our area's biologist. He's just there doing DNA testing. Yeah, that's true.
- 28:23Like, he's not assigned to our set area. The guy that's assigned to our area
- 28:27sits in that little shack up there, up the road from the boat ramp,
- 28:30and I don't ever see him leave.
- 28:33Anyways. Anywho. We'll move on from that, because that's just a whole other
- 28:39tale for a whole other time, probably. The DNR's knocking on our door.
- 28:43Yeah, no, it wouldn't be the first time.
- 28:46JK. Yeah, speak for yourself.
- 28:50I'll take that back. I did have them knock on my door one time,
- 28:53because they were there to do that inspection on the boat for the title.
- 28:57Yep, same. This year, actually. Didn't that take you like eight months to get back?
- 29:03Yeah, but he was off work. I'll give him a break. And he had to track that boat
- 29:08through like three or four different states. Yeah.
- 29:12That's wild. Fucking nightmare.
- 29:14The thing was attached to like South Dakota, North Dakota, Wisconsin,
- 29:18and Minnesota, I think. Yeah.
- 29:22That boat's seen a thing or two. Yes, and it's about to see a lot more.
- 29:28One thing i wanted to say real quick here is if you're if you're listening in
- 29:32to this podcast on apple or spotify or whatever you listen on don't forget that
- 29:37you can watch live and add your,
- 29:40input to the podcast as we do it on facebook or youtube if there's things that
- 29:46you'd like to say i've seen we had some comments on spotify this past week,
- 29:51I mean, I've responded to them, but I don't see those near as quick as I will
- 29:55see them on here, or any of us will see them.
- 29:59So, don't just keep that in the back of your mind. If you've got time on a Monday
- 30:02night, swing in and listen in and throw out your comments or your hate. Preferably the hate.
- 30:12Big end of the hate. Yes. So,
- 30:17The The biggest one that I know we've all been pushing for And a lot of people
- 30:21that hunt our area has been screaming Is that we'd like to see the waterfowl
- 30:24zone change The borderlines for the south zone When they They came out in 2021,
- 30:31Or 2020 With the new borders They were They were better A lot of people were
- 30:36happy But then there were some of them Some of us that Weren't very happy A little disappointed,
- 30:43What the What is that change that we're looking to have?
- 30:47You want to touch into that, one of you two, a little bit?
- 30:50You got it, Pookie. Let it rip.
- 30:53Yeah, so essentially just adding our lake into the south zone.
- 30:58With, honestly, whatever configuration they will let us, and by all standards,
- 31:05the easier the better for all people.
- 31:09So it's definitely going to have to be a paved road for that hard line that splits zones.
- 31:15I know that we've made a couple different maps of it as well to where the central
- 31:22and south zone will split,
- 31:25but I mean, it's hard for, I guess I would say for sure us as a group,
- 31:31because we're definitely more focused on the central and south,
- 31:35and not so much on the north, because we personally don't hunt up there a bunch, but,
- 31:41Yeah, I mean, just if we could push Red Rock into the south zone.
- 31:50The maps that we have is very attainable for that to happen.
- 31:55Yeah, and I feel like a lot of people that hunt Red Rock would absolutely love it.
- 32:00Trent commented here that he'd like to see the Mississippi River in the South Zone.
- 32:05The problem, Trent, is that none of you Mississippi River guys can ever agree on anything at all.
- 32:13Every time I hear people talk about it, it's like 50-50 on people against it
- 32:19or for it. But me personally, I think you're right.
- 32:21I think it should be all in the south zone, just like the Missouri River is.
- 32:24I mean, they're the same thing.
- 32:27Mississippi River is actually a bigger river. Mm-hmm.
- 32:30And they don't, it doesn't freeze. I mean, hardly ever anymore. Yeah.
- 32:36I know. So, like, on those border changes, I have it pulled up here.
- 32:41Like Pookie was saying, it's got to be, like, pretty much easy lines to go off of.
- 32:46We've got two proposals that we are taking
- 32:49to the DNR this year Option one is
- 32:52So the south zone borderline runs highway
- 32:5592 across Iowa And so this one would go northwest off of 92 along highway 5
- 33:03Up to Carlisle And then it would continue north on highway 65 to 163 Where it
- 33:10would then follow 163 all the way back down to 92,
- 33:15That's one option, it's a smaller section that we're splitting off,
- 33:19a little bit harder to follow line, I think, personally. I think that one's
- 33:23going to be harder to get through.
- 33:25The other option is, as you're coming across 92, when you hit Indianola,
- 33:31you go straight north on Highway 65 to meet up with Highway 565, the bypass,
- 33:39and then come down 163 to 92, just like Option 1 on the second half.
- 33:44But I think that one is a lot easier line to follow.
- 33:49Right. I would agree, for sure.
- 33:52Because really it's going to boil down to how hard does it make the DNR to enforce
- 33:57these laws and follow these borders?
- 34:02Yeah, because if it's a pain in the ass, they are not going to go for it.
- 34:06No. No, if it makes their job harder, they're not about it. Yeah,
- 34:10and I don't blame them. Yeah, I mean, I don't like my job being harder.
- 34:14Right, which the DNR is actually, so like how we're set up out of post,
- 34:20the DNR, which makes no sense to me personally,
- 34:24even though they're not under our umbrella of the DPS,
- 34:28like they are a state agency as well, but how we're
- 34:31set up in post they're set up in districts that do not match
- 34:34up with our posts so like for me
- 34:37to try to understand that like really really confuses me because i know all
- 34:41the dnr guys around here obviously i work around them every single day too but
- 34:46like to comprehend that their district is essentially the same as ours but it's
- 34:54a different number i'm like why,
- 34:57You're making this very hard on me.
- 35:00Nobody cares if it's hard on you. Yeah, I guess not.
- 35:04I won't help anymore. Boom roasted. Damn.
- 35:12Now, it's been a thing happening for a while.
- 35:15I know a lot of guys that hunt our area are for this, and a lot of guys that
- 35:20goose hunt in general, that don't duck hunt, are for this. So we've got a lot
- 35:25of people in the, in the yay section for it.
- 35:29I don't know how many are in the nay for it. Cause I just, people don't respond
- 35:32to when it comes to stuff like this.
- 35:35Right.
- 35:38But if you would like, and if you are able to attend those meetings in March,
- 35:44I can send over or you can reach out to any of us and we can send over the document,
- 35:50with all the stuff we have in that doc regarding this zone change and the reasons why we want it.
- 35:57It'll be awesome if we can get people at every single meeting throughout the state of Iowa this year.
- 36:03At least one person would be huge yeah you know if there's if there's people
- 36:08putting that bug in their ear constantly and constantly annoying them they're
- 36:12gonna they're gonna look into figuring out how they can fix this or get people
- 36:16off their ass yeah the age old term squeaky wheel gets to grease,
- 36:20we just gotta find the right squeaky wheel.
- 36:24August keeps asking why won't 20 and north work then 20 and 80 then 80 south
- 36:31easy simple and splits two huge water sources.
- 36:35The reason that won't work, August, is because certain people fought years ago
- 36:41to get the Missouri River put in the south zone, so they made a whole other
- 36:45zone for it when it was north and south, and they called it the Missouri River Zone.
- 36:50And now they want three zones, so they turned north, central,
- 36:54south, and they included the whole Missouri River in the south zone.
- 37:00So, I don't know. I don't know how they pick their lines. Yeah,
- 37:05if you were going to use 80 as a split, it would definitely make sense to just
- 37:09have two zones at that point.
- 37:11Like, just go back to two zones if you were going to split it at 80.
- 37:1480 is close enough to the middle of the state.
- 37:18That would make the most sense.
- 37:20I would, if we could, if we went to two zones, I wonder if we could have two splits.
- 37:25If we didn't, say we stayed on the 60-day season, and if we went to two zones,
- 37:31north and south, and then we included, we could make the borders whatever we
- 37:34wanted for the rivers, if we could have two splits in a year.
- 37:38That'd be sweet. Because that would be cool. Mm-hmm.
- 37:41And I would be all for having, say, 80 be the split line for north and south,
- 37:47and then you have whatever it is now for the river over there in Missouri and
- 37:51then let the Mississippi River guys just have whatever the hell they want.
- 37:57But that would be I mean I think you'd get all people in support of that.
- 38:02Yeah it used to be two zones for years August but they changed that was like
- 38:0710, 15 years ago now they changed that.
- 38:10August is old enough he definitely remembers that. Right.
- 38:15Yeah. Chad asked where the meetings are.
- 38:18I don't know where the meetings are for this year.
- 38:23I know in the past they have them kind of randomly all over the state and it's
- 38:27usually all within a week, I believe.
- 38:29I think it's like, it's either five consecutive days and then a few more days
- 38:33the next week or something like that. And they kind of scatter them all over.
- 38:38I can do some work with that and figure out the dates, times,
- 38:41location for that. We'll put it out on a post. Yeah, for sure.
- 38:46Yeah, that way we can And kind of get it out to you guys. As soon as we hear
- 38:49something, we'll get it out there.
- 38:51The DNR will post it on their page, too. They normally do, at least.
- 38:55From what I've seen in the years past. And there's usually somebody that shares
- 38:58it in Iowa Waterfowlers, which most of us are in. Yes.
- 39:06Old dad had to get the juices flowing in there again this week, I saw.
- 39:12You just had to get the juices flowing in Iowa waterfowlers again this week. Well, yeah, yeah.
- 39:17Somebody's got to do it. I mean, God, everybody's just being boring lately.
- 39:21The hunting season's over. Let's just be lame.
- 39:26Grow up. Grow up.
- 39:32We talk shit year-round here. That is a fact.
- 39:37It actually probably gets worse after season. It does, indeed.
- 39:41Poor Pookie. That dude's cooked.
- 39:49I'm surprised he still shows up, honestly. I don't blame him for taking a two-week
- 39:54hiatus because he does get ripped on.
- 39:5724-7. Mental health reasons. Yeah, no, I get it. What'd your therapist say?
- 40:03Yeah, that I shouldn't be friends with you guys anymore.
- 40:07What a loser that guy is. I know. I know.
- 40:11Tell him to man up. To touch on that doc that you had mentioned earlier as well
- 40:17too, like we want to hear from everyone, like the good and bad to both sides of it.
- 40:22Because, I mean, there's obviously stuff that like we don't think about or like
- 40:27we don't take into consideration too.
- 40:29So with what Cade was saying about like the people that are nay against it,
- 40:34how they don't say anything, like no we want to hear those things
- 40:37that way we can make those changes to it
- 40:40and i mean this doesn't this isn't just
- 40:43to benefit us this is to benefit all of the
- 40:46hunters in the state of iowa like we just want to make it better in general
- 40:50too so any like recommendations i mean i mean this tyler probably might but
- 40:57like no question is dumb so no there are stupid questions yeah i knew it I knew that. Yeah.
- 41:04They're stupid questions, but it's okay. You can ask them.
- 41:08Yeah. I mean, reach out. Cause like if, if people don't say it and we don't think of it,
- 41:14then good chance it's not going on that dock and it's not going to be something
- 41:19that like could potentially be presented within legislation.
- 41:24Absolutely. Definitely.
- 41:28Definitely. I mean, this is the year to step up and voice your opinion.
- 41:32You know, don't slack around and come again next season. You're bitching and
- 41:39moaning about the same thing.
- 41:40I mean, you can still bitch and moaning if you went out there and tried to make
- 41:44the change or voiced your opinion.
- 41:47But just with all the controversy, like more so not in our states and everything
- 41:53about the flooded corn and everything and how, like,
- 41:56these legislators from other states and the DNR from other states are, like, just constantly,
- 42:03people are just at them all the time.
- 42:04Like, I feel like this is probably, if not our best, one of our better opportunities
- 42:09to actually, like, get shit done that we want to see get done. Yeah, I would agree.
- 42:18Definitely, definitely look forward to seeing and what we can come up with this offseason.
- 42:23Between working with the DNR and hopefully, hopefully we have the ISC to help
- 42:27us navigate certain avenues when it comes time.
- 42:32Yes, sir. Moving on, we will step into some motion decoys and should they be banned?
- 42:40This is a great topic to have August in the comments for, cause he's hunted for like 95 years.
- 42:46He's seen motion decoys and no motion decoys.
- 42:51Oh, 95 years. Dang, that had to hurt, August. You are old as shit.
- 42:58Judging by his typing, he's driving down the road again.
- 43:03He's probably using voice to text. Oh, I definitely thought he was just like
- 43:08sitting at his kitchen table, just one finger in that thing.
- 43:12Do you think he's using a typewriter to type it out and then he's scanning it in somehow? I hope so.
- 43:19Poor guy. He can't even defend himself. I mean, he can, but it's going to take him 17 business days.
- 43:24Dude, this podcast will be over, and we'll be through the next one before he responds.
- 43:33I did see something on this. So Jason commented, need to raise the sales tax and fund iWill.
- 43:40I didn't ever know about this until I seen something Facebook the other day
- 43:45about iWill and how iWill passed it, but hasn't raised the sales tax to fund it yet.
- 43:53And that was years ago that it passed. That doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
- 43:59I mean, I don't know all the facts on that. I have to do some looking into that
- 44:02unless somebody else that's in the comments knows more about it.
- 44:05But I did see that where they just, they got passed, but we were not funding it.
- 44:11Yeah, that doesn't make any sense at all. No. No.
- 44:17Yeah, we're not putting that one on the screen. No, I think we'll pass on that one. Yeah.
- 44:23Took him a while to respond, though. That typewriter's fucking smoking right now.
- 44:27I will say, though, he at least typed all the words outright.
- 44:32Oh, that's impressive. You could actually read it.
- 44:35Jason Ryan did say they voted on it in 2010.
- 44:39Oh, my gosh. That's a long... Jason Ryan was in high school in 2010.
- 44:44Dude, you guys were still, like, what? Shit in your pants? Shit in your diapers
- 44:48in 2010? Wait, you guys stopped?
- 44:52I was definitely in school in 2010. I'm trying to think what I was. I would have been 12.
- 44:59Good night. Jesus.
- 45:03Grow up. Motion decoys, Cade. Should they be banned?
- 45:08I don't know that they... Whoa, what do you got? What do you got?
- 45:10Let's just say, when you talk about it, what kind of motion decoys should we band?
- 45:17See, the only thing that I would say, obviously we use them.
- 45:22We have multiple different styles of them. We've got swimmers,
- 45:26we've got mallard machines, we've got spinners.
- 45:29We've got a pulsator that doesn't work. Two of them that don't work.
- 45:33Two of them that don't work.
- 45:35The only thing that i would i would say not like
- 45:38totally banning motion decoys in general but
- 45:42if they were gonna ban them i would love to see some
- 45:44of the shit that they would come out with if you just ban the motors don't ban
- 45:48the motion just ban the motors i think that would be seeing some of the shit
- 45:52especially nowadays with technology some of the macgyver shit that would come
- 45:56out of some of these just like all wind driven stuff then are you saying like like no motors at all.
- 46:03Just seeing how innovative they could get with,
- 46:06I mean, I guess we use motion when there isn't wind, really.
- 46:12Right, but you think about a jerk string. That's not motorized. Right.
- 46:17There's been a million different ways that people build pulley systems and they
- 46:21have a whole spread of detoys that move.
- 46:24But I feel like we're going the opposite direction of that. Oh, yeah.
- 46:28Everything is going motorized. Even jerk strings now have those motorized pullers
- 46:33and everything on them. I feel like we're going the- Those things are awesome.
- 46:38Yes, they are. Those things are wild. Yeah. But I feel like when it comes to
- 46:43the argument of motion decoys being banned, I think most people are talking about spinners.
- 46:49So if you get rid of, like you're talking motorized decoys, you still got the
- 46:55wind-driven spinner, or you got some now that are on a pull cord,
- 46:59like a jerk string type thing that people are using.
- 47:02I've seen that, and I'm like, holy shit, that's awesome. yeah we're gonna start
- 47:06poking holes on the side of the boat line defeated jerk strings I think we should anyway,
- 47:13I was thinking we'd just put Pookie outside and he can just have like six strings
- 47:16tied to him and he can just start going crazy over there son of a bitch I'm
- 47:20in be like the kid in Home Alone where he's just like pulling everything,
- 47:24I'm having my own dance party in the decoys leave me alone I don't know why
- 47:28the birds are flaring guys we gotta get him one of those I think you had one
- 47:32great big mallard hat I did I threw it away.
- 47:35Yeah, we got to get in one of those.
- 47:36Just let them go out there and have a freaking disco party. I'll do it.
- 47:41It helps. I'll do it. But I will order it right now off of Amazon.
- 47:48Yeah, but like I said when I started that thing, we use all kinds of different motorized decoys.
- 47:53I'm obviously not saying we should get rid of them, but I feel like if they
- 47:58do get rid of them, they should just ban the motors and let people get creative.
- 48:02Right. Yeah, no, I mean, you're definitely going to see some redneck ingenuity
- 48:07if you ban this stuff, right?
- 48:09Or if you get rid of, even just say you get rid of motion decoys like motorized,
- 48:13like you're talking about, you're going to see some MacGyver stuff like you've never seen before.
- 48:18You even kind of see it nowadays. Like Higdon does some pretty cool shit with
- 48:21wind-driven stuff and pole cord stuff.
- 48:25Yeah, yeah. How about that AVNX splasher that everybody was raving about that
- 48:29wouldn't shut off? Yeah. Yeah, honestly.
- 48:33Constantly just doing the 6-7 thing.
- 48:37I didn't even think about that, David. I will say, though, like,
- 48:41what I've heard about those things is that when they're in the water, they look amazing.
- 48:46I have heard that, too. They do. August has some. We hunted over them one day
- 48:51this year. And honestly, like, it was starting to ice up.
- 48:55And that thing kept a pretty decent little hole open. I was pretty surprised.
- 48:59Was it better than the Mallard machine? Hell no.
- 49:02Yeah, fuck that thing, man. No, we need five of those. Yeah,
- 49:06that's definitely on the list of more shit to purchase for next year.
- 49:11So, James put up a comment here. Why not have all campers and people that use
- 49:16public areas be, I'm guessing, in charge of the habitat fee to raise money to
- 49:22improve public areas and waterways? Ooh.
- 49:27A tough one because then you're relying on fundraisers
- 49:31stuff like that and people to actually put it on so in
- 49:34theory i think that that is a good
- 49:37idea my only worry would be all right
- 49:41so if you're gonna charge a fee like how
- 49:45many like less people are
- 49:48you gonna get to come out and do it then for that additional fee
- 49:51like are some of these public areas just not gonna get
- 49:54used because people don't want to pay that extra fee or how is that going to
- 49:58work i don't think so i don't know if you know many people that camp but they
- 50:02are fucking diehards oh yeah that doesn't matter if it costs them five grand
- 50:06they're going camping no thank you that's because you live in it now,
- 50:12no i don't it's parks still i don't know that could be it's an interesting way
- 50:18to look at it though, to raise money for certain areas. Yeah.
- 50:23August says that AvianX is badass, but I remember him bitching about it one
- 50:27day that he had an issue with it.
- 50:29I can't remember exactly what it was. In seven business years,
- 50:32he'll reply and tell us what it was.
- 50:34You could give that guy a turd and 20 bucks to talk about it and say,
- 50:38hey, talk about how great this turd is, and he would say it's awesome. Yep.
- 50:42Just kidding. This is the best piece of shit.
- 50:49Thank you.
- 50:50My opinion on the motion decoys, I don't see a problem with a lot of them.
- 50:57I mean, I don't really know if they should be banned either.
- 50:59I don't know if I agree with banning them because just don't use them.
- 51:04If they're not working, don't use it.
- 51:06Yeah, and like you were saying, I mean, most of this shit's about the spinners.
- 51:10If they were going to ban the spinners, they should have done it when they first
- 51:13started coming off the shelves.
- 51:15Right. And even then, even if we ban them here, every Tom, Dick,
- 51:20and Harry that goes to Canada is still going to have one like they do now.
- 51:23I mean, they don't even put out duck decoys up there. They just put out a few
- 51:25goose decoys and a couple spinners. Well, like 15. Yeah.
- 51:31Every bird coming towards us has already seen everything that we have.
- 51:37Yeah. I don't know. That mallard machine's kind of slept on.
- 51:40I don't know of many people that use them, actually. No.
- 51:44You're giving away our secrets now.
- 51:48I agree with Trent on this. He says, ban them so I don't have to worry about
- 51:52them. Facts, buddy. One less thing to charge every day.
- 51:56I do remember you saying that on a previous episode. You were like,
- 51:59I wish they'd just fucking banned Spinner so I wouldn't even have to think about them anymore.
- 52:02I mean, I'm not saying I'd be mad if they banned them. I'm just saying I don't
- 52:06think they really need to.
- 52:07No. I don't think it's going to change anything if we're talking about improving the hunting quality.
- 52:13Right. I think there's a lot more things we can fix rather than,
- 52:16eh, fuck that, get rid of it. Yeah.
- 52:20But if you tell them that, they might just do it.
- 52:24Yeah. Let's take the easy route. Yep.
- 52:30Anything else you guys want to add on the motion decoys? Nobody go buy a mallard
- 52:35machine. They suck. That's my thing.
- 52:37Yeah. Everybody go just sell all your motion decoys in general.
- 52:42They're getting banned.
- 52:45You're going to get us canceled before we even take off. What do you mean?
- 52:50We were canceled on episode one. That is true.
- 52:56I'll take this time too to say we are joking 50% of the time at least the other
- 53:0250% of the time we are dead serious I would say if you hear one of us laugh
- 53:07we're fucking around yeah yeah probably,
- 53:11but if you have anything you'd like to add in the comment section before we
- 53:14do wrap this episode up make sure you go ahead and do that in the next few minutes
- 53:19before we wrap this shit up,
- 53:23free roast time on anybody you want. Woo!
- 53:28I know who August is picking. Yeah. We won't see it, though.
- 53:31It's going to take him 10 minutes to type that.
- 53:36I've got fat fingers. Leave me alone. That poor guy. He's not even on the podcast just getting ripped.
- 53:43Who is that guy? I couldn't agree more with that. We'll go ahead and...
- 53:49Oh, we pulled it up at the same time. Yep.
- 53:53Cade sucks and Tyler's ugly. What about Pookie, Zach? What, you're just leaving this guy out?
- 53:58Take it a little deeper, why don't you? I would say that he's picking on people
- 54:01that have all their fingers, but he didn't pick on Pookie.
- 54:07August says the old Mallard machines were awesome. What were the old ones?
- 54:12Like, were they different styles?
- 54:13It was basically the same thing. I mean, it had a little bit stronger motor,
- 54:17but it had a push button that you ran off a car battery.
- 54:21He's still got one. They were fucking sick.
- 54:25Thing is like you could you could bounce it like mine does or you could hold
- 54:29it down and make it look like it was like actually going down to get food oh
- 54:34like actually diving down yeah did you say a car battery though yes yeah so
- 54:39you had to bring a car battery with you to run that thing yes,
- 54:44oh rick says you need to learn to shoot cade he actually said shot you can't
- 54:49type either no that's We knew what he meant. No, we get it.
- 54:54Oh, yeah. And Zach also brings up a little soundbite. Let's hear it. No.
- 54:58Come on. Get that Bay country out. Let us hear a cluck or two.
- 55:01No. I'm not used to it yet. Maybe next week. Whisper me sweet nothings, please.
- 55:07How about Zach comes over here and blows a call first? All right, I'm out. I'm out.
- 55:15I'll save that for our calling tips and tricks episode.
- 55:19Yeah, I'm going to be busy for that one. Because we did find out last week we
- 55:23were dicking around after the podcast, and it actually doesn't sound bad through
- 55:26the microphone. Oh, hell yeah.
- 55:29I didn't mean it. I swear. I did.
- 55:36No, those actually, when you were calling into that mic last week,
- 55:39it didn't blow your eardrums out and sounded actually pretty clear.
- 55:43And that was crazy because I have the mixer set up, And the first time I didn't turn it down at all.
- 55:51It was funny, like I was, I blew it directly into the microphone.
- 55:56I kept like looking at Tyler and I just did like one cluck and he didn't move.
- 56:00And I'm like, oh, it must not be that bad.
- 56:03Yeah, no, it wasn't bad. I kept my headphones on the whole time.
- 56:06I was expecting him to go, Jesus Christ.
- 56:09I did turn my volume down on the laptop before we like that. Just in case.
- 56:16That's funny. That's the cool thing, though. Like you can just turn it down, turn it up.
- 56:21For sure way easier than mine set up here yeah that is fair,
- 56:28but I think that about does it for this episode um,
