Latest / Sidekick's What Just Shipped / HubSpot buying groups: put the whole committee on the company record | Shipped May 2026
Transcript
- 0:00Dana (AI host): Your rep knows who the champion is, who holds the budget, and who's quietly blocking the deal.
- 0:05Dana (AI host): Your CRM shows one contact.
- 0:07Rob (AI host): HubSpot's buying groups put that whole committee on the company record, as an org chart.
- 0:12Dana (AI host): And by the end, you'll know who can edit it, and what to clean up before anyone sees it.
- 0:19Narrator (AI voice): This is Sidekick's What Just Shipped, presented by Sidekick Strategies.
- 0:22Narrator (AI voice): Your hosts, Rob and Dana, are AI.
- 0:25Narrator (AI voice): The voices are synthetic, the research is real, and humans check every claim before it reaches you.
- 0:34Rob (AI host): Two AI hosts here, Rob and Dana, and between us we've never once been the champion on a deal.
- 0:40Dana (AI host): Today I'm playing a sales manager who runs pipeline reviews from a flat contact list.
- 0:45Dana (AI host): Convince me.
- 0:46Rob (AI host): Fair. Our first write-up, from May 20, 2026, covered two connected pieces.
- 0:52Rob (AI host): A Buying Group card and an Account Map card, both on the company record.
- 0:56Dana (AI host): Start with the buying group.
- 0:58Rob (AI host): It's a visual layout of the stakeholders on a deal.
- 1:00Rob (AI host): Who's the champion, who controls the budget, who might block it.
- 1:04Dana (AI host): Where did it come from?
- 1:05Rob (AI host): Our research says it's HubSpot's native rebuild of OrgChartHub, an app HubSpot acquired in 2025.
- 1:13Rob (AI host): So no separate install.
- 1:14Dana (AI host): Okay. Why should a manager care?
- 1:16Rob (AI host): Because the stakeholder map usually lives in a slide deck or a rep's head.
- 1:21Rob (AI host): Our September write-up says that means it isn't shared at handoff, and it isn't visible to the manager coaching the deal.
- 1:28Dana (AI host): That part I believe. How do I get it on the page?
- 1:31Rob (AI host): HubSpot's buying groups help page says you first customize the company record layout and add the Buying Groups card from the card library.
- 1:39Rob (AI host): It's not there by default.
- 1:40Dana (AI host): Then what?
- 1:41Rob (AI host): Four ways to build one.
- 1:43Rob (AI host): From a template, from scratch, auto-built with AI, or by asking Breeze Assistant to draft it from a company or deal name.
- 1:51Dana (AI host): Auto-built from what, exactly?
- 1:53Rob (AI host): From information on the associated contact records.
- 1:57Rob (AI host): And only for companies with fewer than one hundred associated contacts. You edit it after.
- 2:02Dana (AI host): So big accounts start from a template or by hand.
- 2:05Rob (AI host): Right. Templates are an outline of a typical buying committee.
- 2:09Rob (AI host): Personas, job titles, and the pain points and value propositions for each.
- 2:14Dana (AI host): And when I fill a template, do I hunt for every contact?
- 2:17Rob (AI host): Sometimes not.
- 2:18Rob (AI host): HubSpot can suggest a contact for a persona based on job title, and you accept or dismiss it.
- 2:24Dana (AI host): What if the person isn't associated with that company yet?
- 2:28Rob (AI host): Search only shows the company's associated contacts by default.
- 2:32Rob (AI host): There's a switch to search all contacts in HubSpot.
- 2:35Dana (AI host): Who builds the templates?
- 2:36Rob (AI host): Creating or editing personas takes Super Admin permissions.
- 2:40Dana (AI host): And roles on each person?
- 2:42Rob (AI host): In the editor, you click a contact and choose Set buying role.
- 2:46Rob (AI host): You can pick more than one.
- 2:48Rob (AI host): You can also draw custom relationship lines with notes, and add department labels.
- 2:53Dana (AI host): Anything that shows me who's gone quiet?
- 2:55Rob (AI host): There's an Activity Heatmap switch.
- 2:57Rob (AI host): You choose sales or marketing activity, filter it, and set the timeframe.
- 3:03George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): Hey, it's George B. Thomas from Sidekick Strategies.
- 3:07George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): Full honesty, this is my AI voice clone, made with my permission.
- 3:12George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): A stakeholder map only helps if your reps actually work the deal inside HubSpot.
- 3:18George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): Our Sales Hub training happens inside your portal, with your pipeline and your deal stages, and each role learns the tools it needs.
- 3:27George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): Thirty days later, we check adoption. Ask about Sales Hub training at Sidekick Strategies dot com.
- 3:36Dana (AI host): My turn to poke holes. Who can actually edit these?
- 3:39Rob (AI host): This is the part neither of our write-ups covers.
- 3:42Rob (AI host): HubSpot's page says you need an assigned Sales or Service seat to create or edit a buying group.
- 3:48Rob (AI host): Core and View-only seats can view them, but can't edit.
- 3:52Dana (AI host): So my ops person on a Core seat can look but can't fix it.
- 3:56Rob (AI host): As written, yes.
- 3:58Dana (AI host): Now the Account Map.
- 3:59Rob (AI host): It draws parent and child company relationships.
- 4:02Rob (AI host): Our write-ups put it on the Related Companies card and in the middle pane of the company record.
- 4:07Dana (AI host): Built from what?
- 4:08Rob (AI host): Your existing company associations.
- 4:11Rob (AI host): HubSpot's parent and child help page says a parent can have many children, but each child can only have one parent.
- 4:18Rob (AI host): And you can set those up in bulk with an import.
- 4:21Dana (AI host): And what does the map show me besides boxes?
- 4:24Rob (AI host): Our write-ups say deal activity across related companies.
- 4:27Rob (AI host): So you can see which subsidiaries have open deals and which are whitespace.
- 4:32Dana (AI host): That's the land-and-expand pitch.
- 4:34Rob (AI host): It is. And our research makes the same case for customer success.
- 4:38Rob (AI host): The map and the buying group stay useful at renewal, when you need to know who the economic buyer is now.
- 4:44Dana (AI host): So messy hierarchies show up on screen.
- 4:46Rob (AI host): Both write-ups say the same. Clean associations first, or the maps show the gaps.
- 4:52Dana (AI host): Here's what I really want to know. Is this finished?
- 4:56Rob (AI host): That's our freshness check.
- 4:57Rob (AI host): As of our October 30 check, HubSpot's buying groups page still says a Super Admin can opt the account into the Buying Groups beta.
- 5:05Dana (AI host): But your September write-up says it shipped.
- 5:07Rob (AI host): It does. And our May write-up said private beta.
- 5:11Rob (AI host): So treat it as a beta you turn on, until HubSpot says otherwise.
- 5:15Dana (AI host): What else didn't line up?
- 5:16Rob (AI host): Plans, and the map. Our May write-up named Professional for Sales Hub and Service Hub.
- 5:22Rob (AI host): Our September write-up and HubSpot's page say Professional and Enterprise.
- 5:27Rob (AI host): And we couldn't find a HubSpot help page for the Account Map itself, so those steps come from our write-ups only.
- 5:33Dana (AI host): Okay. Here's my plan as the skeptical manager.
- 5:36Dana (AI host): This week, add the card to one team's company layout.
- 5:39Dana (AI host): Check that your reps have Sales seats, not Core.
- 5:42Dana (AI host): Before anyone builds anything, agree on what each role means.
- 5:45Dana (AI host): Our September write-up says the labels have to mean the same thing to everyone.
- 5:49Dana (AI host): Then build one template for your most common committee, and fix the parent and child links on your top ten accounts.
- 5:54Rob (AI host): And bring one buying group to the next pipeline review.
- 5:58Rob (AI host): So, buying groups.
- 5:59Rob (AI host): Templates, AI drafts, a heatmap, and a beta switch that's still on HubSpot's page.
