Luna: Oh, I love the beach. Especially shell hunting. Lucas: Perfect. Because today we're learning how to talk about shells in Cantonese. Luna: 贝… something? Lucas: Close. 貝殼. That's 'shell' — bèi hòk. Luna: 貝殼. Bèi hòk. Lucas: And if you want to say 'this is a shell', you say 呢個係貝殼. Luna: 呢個係貝殼. Nē go haih bèi hòk. Lucas: Let's try it. Imagine you're holding a shell. Point at it and say 呢個係貝殼. Luna: 呢個係貝殼. Lucas: Exactly. Now if you found a shell — maybe you picked it up — you can say 我執到一個貝殼. Luna: 我執到一個貝殼. That's 'I found a shell'? Lucas: Yes. 執到 means 'found' or 'picked up'. 一個 is 'one'. So 我執到一個貝殼. Luna: 我執到一個貝殼. That sounds great. Lucas: Now, let's say the shell is beautiful. You can say 好靚. Luna: 好靚. Hóu leng. Lucas: So if you find a pretty shell, you can say 我執到一個貝殼, 好靚. Luna: 我執到一個貝殼, 好靚. I can imagine saying that on the beach. Lucas: And if someone asks you 'what did you find?', they might say 你執到咩? Luna: 你執到咩? What's the 咩? Lucas: 咩 is 'what'. So 你執到咩 means 'what did you find?'. Luna: 你執到咩. And I can answer 我執到一個貝殼. Lucas: Right. Or you could say 我執到一個貝殼, 好靚. Luna: Okay, let me practice the whole conversation. You ask me 你執到咩? Lucas: 你執到咩? Luna: 我執到一個貝殼, 好靚. Lucas: Perfect. And I could reply 呢個係貝殼, 好靚. Luna: So 呢個係貝殼 is also useful. Lucas: Absolutely. Let's do a quick scene. Imagine we're walking on the beach. Luna: Okay. I see something shiny. 你執到咩? Lucas: 我執到一個貝殼. And you? Luna: 我執到一個貝殼, 好靚. Lucas: 呢個係貝殼, 好靚. Good. Luna: This is fun.
