- 0:00Hey, welcome to the Integrate This EdTech podcast.
- 0:02I'm David Berner and I am joined by Brittany
- 0:05Blackwell, host of the Resilient Teacher podcast.
- 0:10And we're super happy to have you here. You've
- 0:11been running around the conference like we have.
- 0:13And so it's nice to have someone here we can
- 0:16relate to a little bit. It's been fast and furious,
- 0:17I feel like, the last two days. What has your
- 0:21experience been like here since you got in? I've
- 0:24been to ISTE. This is my third year coming to
- 0:26ISTE and I... I love it. I mean, it is, they're
- 0:29so, it's so fast paced, but it's a lot of connections
- 0:34and a lot of meeting new people and connecting
- 0:38with old people. And I think that's the biggest
- 0:40part about ISTE is like the connection component.
- 0:44And yeah, just a big fan of ISTE. Okay. And so
- 0:49you said three years. Yeah. Three for me, too.
- 0:52Jeremy's on like six, I think, or something,
- 0:54so he's doubled up. But as you've gone around,
- 0:57like I've been following your TikTok, and so
- 1:00make sure you follow Brittany's TikTok as well.
- 1:02But what kind of things have stood out to you
- 1:05as you've gone around and now you've gone to
- 1:06like some demonstration type things? What have
- 1:08you seen so far? Yeah, so one of the first...
- 1:12One of the demonstrations that I went to was
- 1:14the Code AI. They were formerly Code .org and
- 1:19now they're Code AI. And they had this experience
- 1:21space where you kind of go in and it starts with
- 1:26something very human, which I really liked. It
- 1:29asked like who was the student that changed it
- 1:34all. And I think that really is just a really
- 1:38cool component of something that says AI, because
- 1:41it's bringing us back to the human part of teaching.
- 1:46And so it asked us that question. And then after
- 1:49that, it kind of asked us a few questions about
- 1:51how we would do different things within our classrooms
- 1:57to find our digital literacy archetype. No surprise,
- 2:05I got the maker, which was kind of cool. But
- 2:08it was just a really cool experience because
- 2:10it made me think about how I feel about AI in
- 2:14the classroom and how students use AI. So that
- 2:17was one really, really cool exhibit that I went
- 2:21to. Okay. And that's a huge topic of conversation
- 2:24right now, right, is like how teachers are using
- 2:27AI, how students are using AI. Is the use effective?
- 2:30Is it tied to... Sound pedagogy. Yeah, are we
- 2:34just using technology for technology sake? There's
- 2:36a lot of those conversations going on right now
- 2:38And so as we look at the the teachers ton of
- 2:42teachers here and thinking about teachers back
- 2:44at districts You know like we're from or any
- 2:46of the states What what type of things are you
- 2:50seeing? You know referring to your the resilient
- 2:52teacher podcast. Yeah, you focus specifically
- 2:55on teacher burnout Okay, so take us through that
- 2:58first. Like what do you how do you normally set
- 3:00that up and? think about any topic that you bring
- 3:04to the podcast. I actually have on my website
- 3:07a quiz that teachers can take to actually determine,
- 3:10like, what do they need to do? What's their roadmap
- 3:14to burnout recovery? Because each individual
- 3:16person is different, right? Like, you have...
- 3:19I was a special educator, so I think of everything
- 3:21as, like, individualized. But there are, like,
- 3:24four main paths that you can go down. And typically,
- 3:27what I've been seeing is, like... a lot of teachers
- 3:29go down the systemized path. Like, they just
- 3:32need systems, they need routines, they need ways
- 3:35to make it their own, and they're often using
- 3:39different people's idea of what's the right thing
- 3:44to do. And so, like, when I think about AI, I
- 3:46think about that as part of systemization, systemization
- 3:50and automation, right? And so, teachers can really
- 3:56consider what What's the thing that they love
- 3:59about teaching? And we don't want to systemize
- 4:02that. We don't want to delegate that. We want
- 4:04to continue doing that because that's what brings
- 4:06us joy, right? But the things that we hate, everybody
- 4:10has something that they hate doing as a teacher.
- 4:13For me, it was attendance. I hate attendance.
- 4:15I'm never going to remember to do attendance.
- 4:17And so I might automate that. Like how could
- 4:20I automate that? Simple, like just creating an
- 4:24alarm that tells me I need to... take my attendance
- 4:27and then I take the attendance. But something
- 4:30as simple as that is so profound and it's like
- 4:35one less thing that you have to think about.
- 4:38Teachers are so burned out by decision fatigue.
- 4:42Like every day you're making tons and tons of
- 4:44decisions and so you think about like when you're
- 4:49in the classroom and a student comes up to you
- 4:51asks you a question. And you have to think and
- 4:54decide in that moment, how do you react? There
- 4:59are so many things that they do. And so to remove
- 5:01some of those decisions and automate those or
- 5:04systemize those can relieve a lot of burnout
- 5:07for teachers. So that's just one component of
- 5:10like why teachers can burn out and the way that
- 5:13I kind of think about that. Has there has there
- 5:15been anything that you've seen or talked about
- 5:17on podcasts like Jeremy and I are both tech integration
- 5:20specialists, right? And we so we working with
- 5:23schools Helping them helping teachers understand
- 5:26Whether it's through professional development
- 5:28training or like tutorial videos that kind of
- 5:31thing How can someone in our position like a
- 5:34support position? How how can we help? teachers
- 5:38From that burnout, right? Kind of take some of
- 5:42the things off their plate to help them out Yeah,
- 5:44so like with technology, I think again that if
- 5:48we're just thinking about decision fatigue, right?
- 5:51think about how many Technology things that they
- 5:56have to learn and know and use each day There
- 6:01are just so many if you think about like attendance
- 6:04may be tracked in one app and then you've got
- 6:06your grades in another app. You've got your curriculum
- 6:11in another app. And so it becomes so many things
- 6:15that it's like, where do you go and how do you
- 6:19do it? And it feels a little bit overwhelming.
- 6:21And so anything that can become like, I hate
- 6:24this term, but like a one stop shop or a hub
- 6:28or a place that they can just do one thing really
- 6:32well. That, I think, would reduce a lot of the
- 6:37decision fatigue, a lot of the even technology
- 6:40burnout, because I think sometimes teachers,
- 6:42they know that the technology is there, but it's
- 6:45just another step to get to it, that it becomes,
- 6:48okay, well, I'll just do something that I already
- 6:49know how to do, because right now I'm overwhelmed.
- 6:53I can't really think of that. I think at the
- 6:55beginning of the year, too, is like a really
- 6:58great time to I guess, show the flashy thing
- 7:03that you want teachers to adopt, because if you
- 7:08introduce something in the middle of the year,
- 7:11their brains are already, they're at capacity.
- 7:16And so I think those are the two main things
- 7:18that I would say. can help technology integration.
- 7:23So yeah, and you mentioned like systems and the
- 7:26where they kind of they should stay where they
- 7:28are helpful. Do you think that you brought this
- 7:31up? Like even even just thinking about it as
- 7:34you're talking about it, you know, all the different
- 7:36systems that like from a tool perspective, so
- 7:40your SIS, right? Your your learning management
- 7:43system, all these things like even just like
- 7:45signing into those. Yeah, navigating the different
- 7:48platforms. Like those are all things that some
- 7:51of us might think of as like, you know, second
- 7:53nature for you're really good with technology.
- 7:55But for some people might be more cumbersome,
- 7:57like, OK, I've got to move from this to another
- 7:59one and keep like my like keep processing all
- 8:03this stuff. Right. Do you feel like we focus
- 8:06too much on having those for the sake of like
- 8:10simplicity, but they might actually bog down
- 8:13teachers a little bit? Of having different. Yeah,
- 8:17like having all those different systems where
- 8:20they've got to... So because they have to manage
- 8:22all of those, do you think that that creates
- 8:25a hindrance to like their ability to think clearly
- 8:29or work with kids closely? I think it could.
- 8:35Like I mentioned earlier, every teacher, every
- 8:39student obviously is very... are different individuals.
- 8:43And so, like, what might work for me, like, as
- 8:47far as, like, having one place where everything
- 8:49is single sign -on, for instance, is just, like,
- 8:52super helpful. For other teachers, it really
- 8:56might be that they compartmentalize in that way,
- 8:59where they are like, okay, this tool does this
- 9:01one specific thing, and I only need to know this.
- 9:04That might help teachers who are... not really
- 9:08good at technology. Maybe that is supportive
- 9:10of them. But I would think for me personally,
- 9:13it would support me to have different features
- 9:17within one tool to be able to do. Yes, like the
- 9:24one -stop shop. So then you can go in there and
- 9:25like, I can do all my things here. Yes. And that
- 9:28takes a little bit of sense of. having to manage
- 9:32all that off of their plate. Yeah, and I think
- 9:34that like the management part of it too is like
- 9:37you only have to know this one platform and so
- 9:41the Interface is going to be more than likely
- 9:44the same like as you go into different apps and
- 9:47different things like that You don't realize
- 9:50it but each app it might have a waffle or it
- 9:53might have a hamburger. And like the idea between
- 9:57where is the waffle? Oh, it doesn't have a waffle,
- 10:00it has a hamburger, you know, for like just knowing
- 10:05where certain features live within an app. Like
- 10:08I'm thinking about like this, I had two different
- 10:11curricula that I had to use that our district
- 10:14purchased and I had to go onto the platform.
- 10:20And they looked completely different like where
- 10:24where was the you know, where were the the Worksheets
- 10:29or where was where were the assessments? They
- 10:32didn't they weren't the same on each platform
- 10:34And so I think for some teachers that could be
- 10:38overwhelming I'm thinking like special educators
- 10:41and those who have to go into different things
- 10:43like that So yeah, I think that I think it could
- 10:46be okay. So and then like thinking about your
- 10:49your podcast And just your work in general the
- 10:52things that you're doing and around teacher resilience
- 10:55burnout is there like a certain number of tips
- 10:59or things you're like these are things that I
- 11:01could give you as a teacher like today and this
- 11:04would help you immensely like just think of these
- 11:06three things or One thing whatever you want to
- 11:09however many numbers you want to do. Yeah, you
- 11:11can do yeah so I think the number one thing that
- 11:16I tell any teacher who's burned out is to really
- 11:21look at the things that are giving you energy
- 11:25and the things that are taking your energy. There
- 11:28are always going to be things, whether you love
- 11:30them or not. You may love teaching, but you can
- 11:34still become burned out. And that's because you
- 11:36are having more energy taken than the energy
- 11:38you're putting in. So for some people, the things
- 11:43that bring them energy are creating resources.
- 11:45That is not me. Do not. give me creating resources,
- 11:49but for some people it does. And so putting everything
- 11:51into a bubble and then writing those things down.
- 11:55What are the tasks that you have to do as a teacher
- 11:57every day? And then draw an arrow out for those
- 12:01that are taking your energy and draw an arrow
- 12:04in for those that are giving you energy and then
- 12:06look at those. Like how many items are there
- 12:10on that? That's a lot of items and more than
- 12:13likely you have more energy going out than energy
- 12:16going in. How can you add more of the energy
- 12:20in so that it is a little bit more balanced?
- 12:22More than likely, and I tell this to people all
- 12:24the time, you're not going to have an equal flow.
- 12:29It's just, it's not realistic to think you're
- 12:32gonna have work -life balance. It's more like
- 12:35work -life alignment. How many of those things
- 12:37can you get that are coming into you so that
- 12:40you're able to give that out? Yeah, and I think
- 12:44even just as you're as you're talking about that
- 12:46even that exercise of doing that is super helpful
- 12:49because you probably don't really realize like
- 12:51you might have a massive imbalance like as I
- 12:53said, you have a bunch of arrows going out. Yeah,
- 12:56and you don't even realize how many arrows are
- 12:58going out and you look at those that are coming
- 12:59in. It's like, you know, it's like and teachers
- 13:03are the most like are so like in service of students
- 13:08that they will continue to give and to give and
- 13:10to give and so. their principal may ask them,
- 13:14hey, can you run this club? Or hey, can you do
- 13:16this other thing? And it's taking a lot of energy
- 13:20out that they're not even recognizing is impacting
- 13:24how they're showing up in the classroom. And
- 13:26so sometimes... it's important to see, OK, that
- 13:29is something that's taking my energy away. And
- 13:31I might need to step away from that because that's
- 13:33impacting how I show up in my classroom and how
- 13:36I'm serving my students. And that's the thing
- 13:38that really gives me energy. And so just to be
- 13:40aware of those things is just a huge, a huge
- 13:44component of your first step to burnout recovery.
- 13:47Yeah. And we just to connect this, we had a guest
- 13:49on earlier to Thomas Riddle, who said something
- 13:52that he was like, if you can't do that well,
- 13:56if you're not also taking care of yourself, right?
- 13:59So if you have that massive imbalance, it's going
- 14:02to actually impact your teaching even though
- 14:04that might not be your, you know, you're not
- 14:06intending to have that happen. It just naturally
- 14:08is going to happen because of the output that
- 14:10you're giving, right? Because you are putting
- 14:11students first, but it might not work out so
- 14:15well if you don't take care of yourself first,
- 14:17right? Absolutely. So one last question for you
- 14:20here. How can people see your work reach you?
- 14:24Anything that you have that's coming up that
- 14:26you want to plug and just talk about, like people
- 14:28should check out socials, all those things. Yeah.
- 14:31So I am on social media. I'm teaching my body
- 14:36and soul on Instagram and at Miss Princess Teach
- 14:38on TikTok. I never changed my name on TikTok.
- 14:42And so eventually I will. I will change that
- 14:45and it will just be my name. That will be much
- 14:47easier to find. But I have a website that's probably
- 14:51the best and easiest place because it will never
- 14:54change, teachingmindbodyandsoul .com. And the
- 14:58podcast is on there. I also stream on all major
- 15:01podcasting platforms, the Resilient Teacher Podcast.
- 15:04And yeah. That's pretty much where you can find
- 15:09me. If you are a burned out teacher, there's
- 15:12hope. You don't have to hate teaching anymore.
- 15:16You can live your best life inside and outside
- 15:17of the classroom. And so the best way to take
- 15:20that first step is to do that exercise we talked
- 15:22about just a few minutes ago. Or you can go to
- 15:26teachingmindbodyandsoul .com slash quiz and you
- 15:29can find your unique roadmap to burnout recovery.
- 15:33Awesome and we'll make sure we link everything
- 15:35in the show notes so you can click on those and
- 15:37check those out So Brittany, thanks for joining
- 15:40us. We appreciate it. Yeah, check out the integrate
- 15:42this podcast on all platforms and on YouTube
