- 0:01SPEAKER_01: Welcome to everyone to critics.
- 0:05SPEAKER_01: On rock and tomatoes, it tells us why critics got it wrong.
- 0:09SPEAKER_01: I'm your host, Yanet Code.
- 0:11SPEAKER_01: Formerly pretentious films for 10 years later, beat the error of its way.
- 0:16SPEAKER_01: My guest today is writer and comedian, not Burry.
- 0:23SPEAKER_02: Hi, thanks for having me.
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: How are you doing today?
- 0:27SPEAKER_02: I'm alright.
- 0:28SPEAKER_02: You know, I just logged off of work and uh I'm excited to make the transition from couch to floor.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: Wait, are you sitting on the floor right now?
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: I am.
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: I'm sitting on a very uh expensive floor poof that I bought at the beginning of quarantine.
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm sure it's made good use now.
- 0:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's sufficiently broken in.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: After what is it like seven, eight months of this?
- 0:58SPEAKER_02: It's day.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: I did the math earlier this week.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: You did the days.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: Because we started March 13th was when the actual shutdown started over here in the States.
- 1:11SPEAKER_02: So it's been over 220 days, I think was what it was at the beginning of this week.
- 1:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that sounds about right.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: Which is very bleak.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: Because the time moves so weird, like it doesn't feel like it's moving at a steady pace.
- 1:27SPEAKER_02: You're like, I guess it hasn't been that bad.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: And then you like do the actual math, and you're like, no, it's pretty bad.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: Someone just said to me that it was like the it's the end of October, and I was like, oh wait, it is.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because I'm I haven't done anything since March, I don't think.
- 1:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I was like, I'm really glad like I was lucky to keep employment throughout, and like I have a very steady job, and like it's very comfortable, luckily.
- 1:53SPEAKER_02: Um what do you do?
- 1:54SPEAKER_02: So it's you should I am uh CRM.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: CRM specialist.
- 2:01SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, so just very like data administration and like systems administration, a lot of just like troubleshooting, so it's not too bad or too heavy, but it's very strange because my life is literally just work now with nothing outside of it, and it's just like I just wake up, do work, log off, and then I'm already home.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's the thing, it's just like oh.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: So you came onto here to talk about the movie Leap Year.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: Yes, the a the Amy Adams romp.
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: Yes, from the great year of 2010.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: The great year of 2010 when things were easy.
- 2:45SPEAKER_02: A decade ago.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: Oh, that sounds that doesn't sound nice.
- 2:51SPEAKER_02: It literally, I remember it came out like around New Year's, I think, of 2010.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I just looked it up and it it was before January the actual yeah, before the actual leap year.
- 3:02SPEAKER_02: I think 2010 was a leap year.
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: So I think they timed it.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: That makes sense.
- 3:07SPEAKER_02: Um if they didn't, I'd be upset.
- 3:09SPEAKER_03: Like what what a stupid one year out?
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: Um but yeah, it came out and I was like, wow, what a like sweet movie to start the year and like Valentine's Day, where it's like a rom-com that doesn't completely make you ill if you're single.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: But the hit the question is, why not if it was released on the on a leap year, why not just release it on the day instead of a month and a half early or two or two months early?
- 3:38SPEAKER_02: You have to let people like plan up to it.
- 3:42SPEAKER_02: Like imagine if they were like, you only get this one day, like we're gonna release it on the week.
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: Release it the week of it.
- 3:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 3:51SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: I can't tell you.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: I feel like two months early.
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: It's also I feel like it's hard to release things around Valentine's Day.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's true.
- 3:59SPEAKER_02: Like just in February in general, because people are like super riddled with plans, and so they're like, maybe if we release it early, people will like it'll build up momentum that and like credibility that people have watched it, and they're like, Oh, this is so good, we should make that our Valentine's Day plan.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: They probably thought, yeah, this is gonna be a huge hit.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: We're gonna release it, everyone's gonna see it.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: It's gonna stay in it stay in theaters for two months, and everyone's gonna want to keep going.
- 4:25SPEAKER_02: Let me I'm trying to think, okay, so they had a budget of 19 million dollars, and they made 32.6 million at the box office.
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: So whatever they did worked, considering the quality of the movie, in my opinion.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: They were net positive.
- 4:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they made they well, yeah, they made money, but fairly.
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: Listen, not everything can be Oscar material.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: Hey, no, no.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: I I haven't said anything about the movie specifically yet.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: What so what is your history with it?
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: Did you see it when it first came out?
- 5:05SPEAKER_02: I think yeah, I did see it.
- 5:06SPEAKER_02: I did see it in theaters.
- 5:08SPEAKER_02: My sister actually.
- 5:10SPEAKER_02: I think my sister was the one who showed me the movie because she wanted to watch it.
- 5:15SPEAKER_02: So I think we watched it over a break together.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: And I I really like all of college is just like blanked out from my memory.
- 5:23SPEAKER_02: It's all like trauma that I cannot recall.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: Um, so I'm assuming I think we probably watched it over a summer break when we were together at home.
- 5:35SPEAKER_02: Um and I'm trying to think, what was 2010?
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: I was I was in university.
- 5:43SPEAKER_02: Oh, I was in high school.
- 5:44SPEAKER_02: I was not even in university.
- 5:46SPEAKER_02: Definitely high school definitely.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: I was thinking I was still in university.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: How are you in university then?
- 5:51SPEAKER_02: I was in university 2012.
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: Um, 2010, I was in high school, so it we probably definitely saw it like over summer, because I think we probably rented it when rentals were still a thing.
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: Um, but we watched over the summer.
- 6:10SPEAKER_02: I was like very single in high school, like not super social butterfly.
- 6:16SPEAKER_02: So definitely was like, oh, this is cute, like still a romantic, like this is sweet.
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: Um, and thought it was just like a fun light movie to watch.
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:30SPEAKER_02: And do you remember do you know how many times you've seen it since it's always on Netflix, I feel like, like off and on.
- 6:39SPEAKER_02: So I want to see what it's like.
- 6:40SPEAKER_02: Oh, they take it off and on.
- 6:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like yeah, it wasn't on the the UK one.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: I had to find it somewhere else.
- 6:46SPEAKER_02: I know, I uh suggested it and I was like, it's definitely gonna be on Netflix, and I was like, oh of course, the one time I have to rent it.
- 6:52SPEAKER_02: Um I'm trying to think.
- 6:56SPEAKER_02: I wanna say like at least once a year, or like once every other year.
- 7:03SPEAKER_02: I mean that's it.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: That's it.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I know what pretty like I've seen it.
- 7:06SPEAKER_02: Like it's just one of those movies where you're like, yeah, I can turn this on.
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: It's funny you don't need to think about you can just like have it on in the background.
- 7:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and there's nothing upsetting in it.
- 7:17SPEAKER_02: Like the story moves along at a nice pace.
- 7:22SPEAKER_02: Like the corny things are not overly corny, where you're like, yeah, okay, this is like sweet.
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: I guess I have emotions.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: So let's let's go over the synopsis just uh uh just for people who haven't seen it.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: So it's a um a movie about a woman who a woman from Boston who uh has been with her boyfriend for four years, I think, and he hasn't proposed, and then uh he's going on a trip to Ireland, he's going on a trip to Dublin, and he find and she hears about from her dad, she hears about a rumour not a rumour, uh uh a um tradition that they have there where on the leap day of uh on the leap year, on the day of the leap year, um the woman can propose to the man in Ireland and it's a normal thing.
- 8:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: So she decides I'm I'm going to try.
- 8:26SPEAKER_02: Alright.
- 8:26SPEAKER_02: So let me let me build this movie experience up for people because I've seen this many a time.
- 8:32SPEAKER_02: So the movie opens on Amy Adams, whose name I just um looked up was Anna in the movie.
- 8:41SPEAKER_02: Anna Brave.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: Who has an who has such a memorable name?
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, her name is Anna Bray.
- 8:46SPEAKER_02: Um, she's like some like she's like like living the life in Boston.
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: Like she's made a life for herself, like a fancy interior designer, and like No, she's not an interior designer, she's a stager.
- 9:00SPEAKER_02: She's a stager, right?
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, because it's like a scam.
- 9:03SPEAKER_02: Um, she's a stager of these like high-end luxury homes, and like she wants to live like this life of like privilege and luxury and status.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: She's a very type A person as well, isn't she?
- 9:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, with her surgeon boyfriend, and so they're celebrating.
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: Played by Adam Scott.
- 9:21SPEAKER_02: Adam Scott, which is infuriating for like we'll get into that, but yeah, she's some type of fancy like heart surgeon, I think.
- 9:32SPEAKER_02: And they're having dinner, and she's like clearly excited, and you're like, you're like rooting for her, you're like, oh, this is her moment, she's about like the perfect life.
- 9:42SPEAKER_02: Like she's uh like yes.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: Have you hang on, hang on.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: Have you never seen a rom com before?
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: Do you not know what happens at the start of every rom com?
- 9:50SPEAKER_02: But like you don't know, like you could get engaged, and then the engagement often where you're like, all right, you know, like I want this for her.
- 9:58SPEAKER_02: Like she is type A, she has this boyfriend, like um, and surprise he doesn't propose, and then he goes to Dublin.
- 10:10SPEAKER_02: Gives her earrings, yeah, and then he like runs off to like some surgery and leaves her alone.
- 10:15SPEAKER_02: You're like, oh, this woman is like lonely and like pining for this life that is like.
- 10:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like it's contingent on like these accomplishments for her, and like so the it's like the the setup is like really well done, in my opinion.
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: Like, you get everything you need in like the first five to fifteen minutes.
- 10:37SPEAKER_02: It really goes straight to the point.
- 10:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, immediately after that, you you meet her dad, and you realize why she's a type A personality, he's like an alcoholic.
- 10:47SPEAKER_02: Um, but like they're Irish and she knows nothing about her heritage aside from her father being an alcoholic, which is a bad stereotype, in my opinion.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: Especially for an Irish person to make them an alcoholic.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: Um but also he played by John, he's played by John Lithgow.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: It's only in one scene and never again.
- 11:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, just this one scene to like unload this Irish history.
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: He comes in as a drunk man, gives the gives her the purpose of like where to go, and then leaves and is never seen again.
- 11:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like nothing.
- 11:24SPEAKER_02: Like she doesn't update her dad when she goes and stuff like that.
- 11:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but he's like, well, like he hasn't proposed, and like, because he's equally surprised.
- 11:31SPEAKER_02: You're like, alright, this guy is not getting the message to like tie things up with this type A immaculate woman, like that is Amy Adams.
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: And so she's like, he was like, Well, why don't you just propose to him?
- 11:46SPEAKER_02: Because it's leap year, and in Dublin, where your boyfriend is going to a conference, um, leap year is the one day that women can propose.
- 11:56SPEAKER_02: So you're like, all right, this is kind of backwards, but like I guess hashtag feminism.
- 12:01SPEAKER_02: Um, but you're like, all right, a woman that's like gonna go after what you she wants.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: You're like, maybe like this is how she is happy.
- 12:08SPEAKER_02: Like she, yeah, like this is the one accomplishment that she's not gonna wait for, like, she's gonna go after it for herself.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: She's gonna get an SA.
- 12:15SPEAKER_02: And you're like, all right, I'm gonna support her.
- 12:17SPEAKER_02: And like the entire time she's like, it's like I she's a very likable, unlikable character.
- 12:24SPEAKER_02: Like, there are definitely movies where like the person is so insufferable where you're like, I don't want to root for these people.
- 12:31SPEAKER_02: Like, I realize like these character flaws are like the entire point, like they're gonna overcome, but you're like, I don't want to root for this person, they're just awful.
- 12:39SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't care why they're awful, there's no excuse to be this miserable, and like she's not miserable at all.
- 12:47SPEAKER_02: Like, she's just driven, she knows what she wants, and like she doesn't like blame anybody or get in anybody's way.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: She's just like, Well, this is what I'm doing.
- 12:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and you're like, you know what?
- 12:57SPEAKER_02: Good for her.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I agree with you there.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: I I will say though, I found both of them slightly annoying at first.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: I was like, You're making your own problems, both of you, at first.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then I grew to I grew to the like them as it went on.
- 13:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because they're like both very like very human people, like they're not their flaws or like their grumpiness.
- 13:19SPEAKER_02: Like, I feel like usually people when they're especially in movies where they're just given these quips, that's their entire character.
- 13:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 13:27SPEAKER_02: Like they're just completely bitter.
- 13:29SPEAKER_02: Like, I mean, there are people like that, but like those aren't the people you want to watch in movies.
- 13:35SPEAKER_01: No, those are very annoying people.
- 13:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I those are out of my way to avoid in real life.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: This is supposed to be escapism, right?
- 13:50SPEAKER_02: Um, but yeah, so she flies to Dublin and then she oh but the travel's over.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: She tries to fly to Dublin.
- 14:01SPEAKER_02: Tries to fly to Dublin, like everything on earth is like trying to halt her from this from this happening.
- 14:07SPEAKER_02: You're like, all right, now I'm really rooting for her because this woman is like going through the thick of it, just trying to make it overseas, and like the travel doesn't make sense.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: And I was like, It makes no sense.
- 14:18SPEAKER_02: It makes no sense.
- 14:20SPEAKER_02: I know that's the biggest clip in the movie where I'm like, you know what?
- 14:22SPEAKER_02: I don't watch rom-coms for like logistics, and I'm not from Europe, so I can't really tell you.
- 14:30SPEAKER_02: Like, I know this is unrealistic.
- 14:32SPEAKER_02: No, no, like, no, what are they like fishermen?
- 14:35SPEAKER_02: Like, no fishermen are like, yeah, let me take this random traveler from the states to her location because the planes are down due to weather.
- 14:45SPEAKER_02: Like, why are they they're risking their lives already on the raging seas?
- 14:50SPEAKER_02: Why why are they taking random passengers from the state?
- 14:57SPEAKER_02: It makes no sense, but like it happens so quick that you're like, alright, this is just quirky thing.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: It just goes boom, boom, boom.
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: So it starts, it starts with like um there's turbulence on the plane, that you find out it's got to be redirected to Wales.
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: So she lands in Wales, there's gonna be no flights until the next day.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: She can't wait, she's very impatient about it.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: She's got only a few days to get to Dublin.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: So she's like she decides to get on the boat.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: Uh to Ding and then the boat's gonna take her to Dingle.
- 15:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: But it doesn't, I think.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: It takes her somewhere else.
- 15:34SPEAKER_01: It drops her off somewhere else, I think.
- 15:37SPEAKER_02: Um Cork?
- 15:39SPEAKER_02: Is that what it's called?
- 15:40SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 15:41SPEAKER_01: Maybe it drops her in Cork.
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: Possibly.
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: My Irish geography is not strong, so if those if those are like very close or very far, I don't know.
- 15:50SPEAKER_02: No, I think Dingle was later in the movie.
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: I've got it written down early on, so it must be early.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: I was writing it as it was going.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: I wasn't like maybe maybe she's supposed to get to Dingle and that's what it was, and then she could they drop her in court.
- 16:06SPEAKER_02: Okay, yeah, okay, yeah.
- 16:07SPEAKER_02: I feel like she's supposed to get to Dingle and then like take a train.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:11SPEAKER_02: Okay, because she's definitely in Dingle later and misses the train to double.
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: Oh, is that where Dingle is?
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 16:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like the the We're just skipping all over this movie.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: No one has seen this movie, they're like, what we're making this movie more complicated than it actually is, but that's because it's like such a simple movie, isn't it?
- 16:31SPEAKER_02: Bibliography doesn't make sense if you're from Europe and watch the movie.
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: Um but if you have like no rec you're not familiar with Ireland, this movie is great.
- 16:41SPEAKER_02: You're just like, I will I will accept the plot holes that I'm not aware of.
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: Um but yeah, she lands in Cork, and I think she stays at this hotel bar.
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: She wanders into a pub and uh and you find out there's been no bus or train from there since the 80s.
- 17:01SPEAKER_02: Right, so you have to drive.
- 17:04SPEAKER_01: Um come on.
- 17:07SPEAKER_02: I mean, it makes sense.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: If you're like down, like I don't know, there's definitely like in like Bumblefuck, Pennsylvania, like I it's like if you're saying it's Cork, Cork is like a popular place.
- 17:20SPEAKER_02: I would not know.
- 17:22SPEAKER_02: So like anybody who's never been to Cork will be like, alright, I guess it's just the rural outer skirts of wherever they are.
- 17:30SPEAKER_02: And like it's by the ocean, so you're like, yeah, I guess I don't understand why public transportation doesn't go to somewhere where it rains heavily off of a cliffside.
- 17:41SPEAKER_02: Like I mean, like, I'm sure once I traveled, I was like, oh yeah, that there's definitely public transportation, but I don't know, the way they build it up, it's just like it's hard to build up these worlds in a present reality.
- 17:58SPEAKER_02: Where so like I feel like with rom-coms, you just have to have that extension where you're like, alright, I'm gonna I'm gonna accept this world that they're building and immersing me in it.
- 18:08SPEAKER_02: Definitely, and like because as soon as you start questioning everything, the movie just goes to shit.
- 18:14SPEAKER_02: Like and I feel like that's most things, like most movies, like unless there's a glaring, like in no universe does this fly, then you're like, alright, that's just something I have to accept for the plot.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: Like, it's not crucial to the plot to have like I don't know.
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: To have locations that have transportation.
- 18:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, it's just like, alright, I get why this has to happen, and also like I get it as well.
- 18:44SPEAKER_01: I'm flying, I'm just I'm I'm kinda teasing.
- 18:46SPEAKER_01: It doesn't matter.
- 18:48SPEAKER_02: You're like, alright, this movie just turns into like this woman had to travel for three days instead of two.
- 18:56SPEAKER_02: You're like, alright, I accept this plot hole.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: Um it doesn't matter, it doesn't matter.
- 19:02SPEAKER_01: So, but yeah, so the whole thing is like nobody will drive her to Dublin in this pub.
- 19:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and it's like because they're all drunk.
- 19:10SPEAKER_02: They're like, why wouldn't they're all drunk except for the guy behind the bar who is like younger, dark and broody, yeah, um what's his name?
- 19:20SPEAKER_02: Declan.
- 19:21SPEAKER_02: Declan is a very hot name, like compared to Jeremy.
- 19:28SPEAKER_01: So I mean, I mean there's a thing in the UK, you won't know them because there's it's for any reason, but there's um like a double act called Anton Deck.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: And they are if you look them up, you'll see why because like they are the most popular two like hosts on UK TV.
- 19:47SPEAKER_01: If you look up Anton Deck, you'll see why it is not.
- 19:52SPEAKER_01: I'm like looking at you like Declan's a hot name.
- 19:55SPEAKER_02: It's a hot name compared to Jeremy.
- 19:57SPEAKER_02: Um if you don't have like personalities associated.
- 20:06SPEAKER_02: Just phonetically.
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: It's just not a hot name in the UK.
- 20:10SPEAKER_02: I think not in the UK, but phonetically, I just feel like it's more pleasing than Jeremy.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay.
- 20:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:19SPEAKER_02: There's just a lot of E sounds in Jeremy.
- 20:24SPEAKER_02: Um, anyway, but Declan is like this dark rooting innkeeper.
- 20:29SPEAKER_02: I guess it's an in pub hybrid.
- 20:31SPEAKER_02: It's just a pub.
- 20:33SPEAKER_02: It's like a B and B but alcoholic.
- 20:36SPEAKER_01: I mean, yeah, like it's very common here.
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: Like, we have a lot of those places, like, yeah.
- 20:43SPEAKER_02: You can tell like her type A personality doesn't mesh with like these country people who are just like, Yeah, we're just living life and nothing should be taken that seriously.
- 20:55SPEAKER_02: And you're like, you know what, they live by the countryside, and the simple life kind of sounds kind of nice.
- 21:01SPEAKER_02: Like um, like they're just enjoying their way of life, but she's like totally not with it.
- 21:07SPEAKER_02: And she's like, Well, I would like to get out of here because I have things to do because the leapier is only in a few, like, leapier days only in a few days.
- 21:16SPEAKER_02: So, like, she's gotta do all her shopping, she's gonna find whatever she's gonna propose to her boyfriend with.
- 21:24SPEAKER_02: Um personally, I think if you're getting if you're going to propose, go ahead and buy yourself a ring.
- 21:30SPEAKER_02: Like, like get what you want.
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: Buy yourself a ring.
- 21:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I buy myself a ring and be like, can I wear this?
- 21:45SPEAKER_01: And now can can you pay me back for this ring?
- 21:48SPEAKER_02: Are you on board with this?
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: Or like no why do I feel like you would do this as well?
- 21:56SPEAKER_02: Because I would.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: I'm like the least I will never understand like fancy proposals.
- 22:05SPEAKER_02: Like to me, like I feel like if you're in love with someone, any gesture is romantic.
- 22:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: So if you're romance Except except for something later on in this movie that we will talk about.
- 22:16SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, for sure.
- 22:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I know exactly what you're talking about.
- 22:19SPEAKER_02: Um, but like I feel like romance, if it's contingent on the size of the gesture, there might be some issues.
- 22:28SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: Um I completely agree.
- 22:31SPEAKER_02: Like you're like compensating for something else that's missing in the relationship.
- 22:36SPEAKER_02: Um so like I don't know.
- 22:40SPEAKER_02: I think it's I always think that proposals like shouldn't be just like like I definitely agree the older I've gotten where I'm like, I'm like, women shouldn't have to propose because it should just be like I should just be able to bring it up in conversation and be like, yeah, like is this happening?
- 22:56SPEAKER_02: And the guy would be like, yeah, and I'm like, all right, so hopefully you propose soon, and I don't have to like like live in anxious anxiety that someone wants to spend their life with me.
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: Why hide why are you hiding this?
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: That's why Yeah, I'm like, why does it have to be a secret that I'm going to propose?
- 23:16SPEAKER_02: Like, I understand, like, okay, like I want to make it a gesture, like, but it's coming.
- 23:20SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, yeah, that except like I don't want to know down to the date.
- 23:24SPEAKER_02: I would like them to put some forethought into it, but it doesn't have to be like I shouldn't have to be like, is he going to spend is he ever going to do it?
- 23:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like and I think like so many rom-coms and like a lot of society, like, doesn't talk because it's like romantic.
- 23:39SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, it's not romantic that a man magically has decided, yes.
- 23:48SPEAKER_02: You are the lucky one.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: Can you believe it?
- 23:52SPEAKER_01: He chose you.
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: He could have had anyone in the world and he chose you.
- 23:59SPEAKER_02: And also, like getting married and spending your life with another human is a really like large commitment where I'm just like, yeah, I would like to discuss this.
- 24:10SPEAKER_02: I would like, I don't want to be blindsided.
- 24:13SPEAKER_02: Like, imagine if you're like, you're the only person who thought about it.
- 24:17SPEAKER_02: That just seems like you're in a world of hurt.
- 24:20unknown: Yeah.
- 24:21SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, I was like, I was like, I don't think you're so then like when people have these like from they're like, I had a no idea, and I'm like, that's relief.
- 24:30SPEAKER_02: That's relief that we're seeing.
- 24:32SPEAKER_02: That's not excitement.
- 24:35SPEAKER_02: But anyway, but yeah, so she's like, Yeah, I have to propose, and like she tells everyone her plan, and it's so funny.
- 24:43SPEAKER_02: It's so funny to me too, because like the culture things that Americans do, like we think everything is like great and fantastic, and other people are like, Yeah, no, like this is not a thing.
- 24:55SPEAKER_02: Don't do that.
- 24:56SPEAKER_01: Because every Irish person usually tells it to it's just like, what are you talking about?
- 25:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, what are you what are you saying?
- 25:02SPEAKER_02: Like, that's not a custom.
- 25:05SPEAKER_02: Or like, why does that why is that what if it was never a thing?
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: They should have made it so it's like never a thing, but it's just her drunk dad telling her this thing.
- 25:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it'd be so funny actually.
- 25:14SPEAKER_02: If like I wish they had made that a bit, like, what is she talking about?
- 25:19SPEAKER_02: Like, do you know what she um but anyway, but yeah, so like she's things just don't go well, and you know, just based on their names alone, Anna and Declan, that these two are gonna be together, and it's like they don't get along, they're but they're both very likable in their unlikability.
- 25:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and there's like But I wrote down like the first thing I wrote down about him is like why is he being such a dick to her?
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: Because like at the in the beginning, he is horrible to her, yeah, he's so rude for no reason.
- 25:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he is very rude and bitter, and you're like, why is he like a bartender because he doesn't like people?
- 25:56SPEAKER_02: And then like, yeah, he is like very harshly unlikable, so you're like, but I think it's because like they do it so that you want to root for her proposing for this guy, like possibly because if he's if he's too likable, you're like, fuck Jeremy, like you got like a hot pub bartender you just have a fling with, but I feel like they have to give her motivation to be like, no, Jeremy's the one, like like all other men are unbearable to me except Jeremy.
- 26:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but if if he was like coming out and being like very nice and like, yeah, sure, I'll drive you in, like, get in the car and you don't have to pay me and all of this stuff.
- 26:32SPEAKER_01: It's just like he's a great guy.
- 26:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's it's like a motivation where you're like, I'm gonna do this out of spite.
- 26:39SPEAKER_02: Where it's not not like necessarily where like your motivations are always other people, but it is like kind of a little push to be like, no, I know I'm right.
- 26:47SPEAKER_02: So like I'm really determined to make it happen.
- 26:50SPEAKER_02: Um so like I feel like he adds that little like motivation for her to be like, I'm gonna make it to double.
- 26:57SPEAKER_02: Like everyone says I'm stupid, but you especially, like yeah.
- 27:02SPEAKER_02: Um and yeah, so I mean it's just a fun like journey.
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: I was just gonna bring up like what happens at the beginning, like one when they first meet and he's she stays at the the the the pub.
- 27:15SPEAKER_01: So she like she gets a room there and she tries to plug in her phone and uh breaks the bed, breaks the wardrobe, and then fuses the entire like causes a power cut throughout the entire village.
- 27:29SPEAKER_02: He makes her a nice sandwich, despite the kitchen being shut.
- 27:33SPEAKER_02: Like, and it I feel like you get these in- It's a ham sandwich, isn't it?
- 27:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and it's just like I don't know, like you get these inklings, like even though he's very unlikable, like you see him like doing things like to be like like you see him like try trying to like not be as bitter and cynical.
- 27:49SPEAKER_02: Like you see him like happily putting together the sandwich and being like, alright, he's not like the most miserable person, he's just like cynical.
- 27:56SPEAKER_02: Like we all know people like that.
- 27:58SPEAKER_02: He's just cynical because of what's happened in his past, and you find out later, but yeah, and you're like, Alright, like I like I want to root for this guy, like he does have a nice side, it's just not in her presence.
- 28:08SPEAKER_02: Like maybe that'll turn.
- 28:10SPEAKER_02: And then like you just see, like from the beginning, there's just so like she's just so type A, and he's like, What are you doing?
- 28:18SPEAKER_02: Like, he's like very much like type B, like, I just want to enjoy things, and like I don't want to be a rush.
- 28:24SPEAKER_02: If they work out, they work out the way they do.
- 28:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and it's you can tell like something went down in his past where he's just like super laid back now because he's just like, I'm so jaded that life is what it is.
- 28:35SPEAKER_01: Um that's also like a very Irish thing as well, of like being very like calm and just like just going with the flow.
- 28:42SPEAKER_01: That's a very Irish thing.
- 28:43SPEAKER_02: So maybe I should move there.
- 28:45SPEAKER_02: I would like to learn their ways.
- 28:47SPEAKER_01: Um move there on move there on a leap year and then propose to some guy.
- 28:52SPEAKER_02: When is the Google?
- 28:54SPEAKER_02: When is the next leap year?
- 28:56SPEAKER_01: Um I actually think it's coming up.
- 29:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm about to I was like, if 2010 was a leap year, it's like what every four years?
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: 18, 18, 20, 22.
- 29:08SPEAKER_02: Oh man.
- 29:09SPEAKER_02: I mean, maybe when the pandemic finally ends, I will make my way to Ireland.
- 29:14SPEAKER_02: Um but yeah, so they go, so it starts, it comes out that he will drive her because he needs money for the pub.
- 29:22SPEAKER_02: The pub is shutting down.
- 29:24SPEAKER_02: You're like, this man is just like really struggling, something's gone down in his past, his pub, like the like his likelihood and like whatever he's like so everything attached to is just like he he's going to lose, also, in addition to whatever shit he's been dealing with.
- 29:42SPEAKER_02: And so he's like, Alright, this woman is like the one thing that could maybe keep me afloat.
- 29:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 29:47SPEAKER_02: Um, so he's like, I will drive you, and she's like, What?
- 29:51SPEAKER_02: And she's like, Okay, fine.
- 29:52SPEAKER_02: And like they come up with this deal where he's like, I can drive you in X amount of days, and then they go on a journey, and they just come across all these things that it's like a bunch of trouble.
- 30:02SPEAKER_02: It's it's funny.
- 30:03SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's like kind of like a Mark Twain novel.
- 30:06SPEAKER_02: If Mark Twain wrote rom comms that had a description of Mark Twain.
- 30:12SPEAKER_01: Mark Twain wrote Leapier is very reminiscent of Mark Twain.
- 30:20SPEAKER_02: Anything that is a journey is a Mark Twain, Mark Twain story for me.
- 30:26SPEAKER_01: Oh no, to me, it's this is more like this it's more reminiscent of the Odyssey too.
- 30:32SPEAKER_02: Well, they did, there was an ocean.
- 30:35SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, so things happen.
- 30:40SPEAKER_01: So they like that he drive he starts driving her um alongside her suitcase, her Louis Vuitton.
- 30:47SPEAKER_02: Louis Vuitton.
- 30:48SPEAKER_02: I think honestly, I think the clips are so funny in the movie.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: Like I love all the Louis Vuitton stuff.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: It was really funny.
- 30:54SPEAKER_02: No, the Louis Vuitton bit is so funny where he just like, oh Louis, like dragging along Louis.
- 31:00SPEAKER_02: Um and it's like she's very attached to like her things because like she didn't have them.
- 31:05SPEAKER_02: Like you meet her like alcoholic dad.
- 31:07SPEAKER_02: So like these people have very like strong set personalities, and like you know exactly where each of them are coming from.
- 31:14SPEAKER_02: And so like you root for them both so hard.
- 31:18SPEAKER_01: And he hit he has his little car, which she immediately destroys because she like knocks it and it goes right, it rolls out and into the like rolls into this little creek, yeah.
- 31:28SPEAKER_02: And it's like you're like it's funny, it's like you none of them do things that make you hate them, where they're just all like, oh that fucking sucks.
- 31:38SPEAKER_02: Where you're like, you've done things and you're like, oh my god, everyone hates me now, and it's like there are things you do where it's just like shit just happens and you feel awful about it, and it's like every mishap in this movie is like one of those circumstances.
- 31:51SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, although like there's one point like right after this where she storms off and she takes takes her suitcase and she's walking along, and he's like following her behind and saying, like, oh, we'll just get a tow truck for this, just wait, but she doesn't want to, and then like these guys stop off and they're like, Oh, um, basically like weird vagabond, yeah.
- 32:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like he's like, Don't get in that, don't get in that I wouldn't go with them.
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: He's like, She's like, you know, it's fine, and they take the suitcase, put it in the in the van, and drive off without her.
- 32:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that part is very questionable because like the first time I watch I feel like after you watch things, you're like, Alright, I know that's safe.
- 32:31SPEAKER_02: Like, because I already know how it turns out.
- 32:33SPEAKER_02: But the first time you're like, is this man just gonna let her be abducted by strangers in Ireland?
- 32:40SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, that that's his well, not only is that his money to save the pub, it's a human woman.
- 32:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:47SPEAKER_00: It does seem very odd initially.
- 32:50SPEAKER_02: But you're like, I don't know, I feel like he's also like maybe close enough where he's just like, alright, I can run up reasonably, or like it's also like also in their universe, whereas like they're just gonna be able to do it.
- 33:03SPEAKER_02: In the universe, this is fine.
- 33:05SPEAKER_02: There's not much happening in Cork, so he's like, I'll be able to find her wherever she is, I guess, or like report it because it's a thing.
- 33:11SPEAKER_01: I mean, literally, they go, they they walk to the next pub, and the guys are in the pub.
- 33:17SPEAKER_02: In the pub, yeah.
- 33:18SPEAKER_02: And you're like, Alright, so this man, you're you're you're like sufficiently quelled, you're like, alright, this man knew.
- 33:24SPEAKER_01: It's immediately resolved.
- 33:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there's not too much tension for you to like question it.
- 33:29SPEAKER_02: You're like, alright, whatever this bad decision is, it's over.
- 33:33SPEAKER_01: And he does beat them up to get the suitcase back.
- 33:35SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 33:36SPEAKER_02: So then you're like, alright, Declan's like hot, like Declan's hot, like he's he can take three guys.
- 33:45SPEAKER_02: He can he can beat up three guys, he like gets her panties back, her very expensive lingerie.
- 33:51SPEAKER_01: It's just like they're so gross, they're like wearing them on their heads and stuff and smelling them.
- 33:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I remember I was just like, why are men like this?
- 34:02SPEAKER_02: Where it's just like, I know men don't do this, but at the same time, I would believe that they would.
- 34:08SPEAKER_01: There are definitely men that do that.
- 34:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:10SPEAKER_01: I wouldn't doubt that there are in real life there are men that do that.
- 34:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, definitely.
- 34:16SPEAKER_02: So you're like, Declan's one of the good ones.
- 34:19SPEAKER_02: The bar is pretty low, but yeah, the bar is very low if that's the options.
- 34:23SPEAKER_01: Uh between Declan, Jeremy, and those guys.
- 34:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 34:27SPEAKER_02: Um Yeah, where you're the bar for men is just it's always moving and never up.
- 34:39SPEAKER_02: Like I feel like it's it's never level either.
- 34:42SPEAKER_02: It's never level.
- 34:43SPEAKER_02: Like when I think of the bar for men, when people are like, it's so low, I'm like, it's like off kilter.
- 34:50SPEAKER_02: Like it's definitely like a limbo stick that isn't even.
- 34:55SPEAKER_00: Where's Jeremy on this?
- 34:57SPEAKER_02: He's like on the higher end, but like definitely balancing on top.
- 35:02SPEAKER_02: Like not a challenge, yeah.
- 35:06SPEAKER_01: Um so they find out that it's gonna be they find out they're gonna get a train, and it's two and a half hours until the next train.
- 35:13SPEAKER_01: And so he suggests going up to the castle that's like in the distance.
- 35:15SPEAKER_01: He's like, that's only 15 minutes to walk up there.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: She doesn't want to go.
- 35:20SPEAKER_01: So I eventually goes with him.
- 35:22SPEAKER_02: She's almost he's also in heels.
- 35:24SPEAKER_02: Like the the issue that they came across with the car was that she got poop on her heels and was trying to script it off and then knock the car, like set the car off down the hill.
- 35:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 35:35SPEAKER_02: So I'm just like, I don't really logistically know why this man is like, let's ask this woman in heels to go hiking, but he's a man, I guess.
- 35:43SPEAKER_02: So whatever.
- 35:44SPEAKER_02: Like women can't.
- 35:45SPEAKER_01: I think he's just very bored.
- 35:46SPEAKER_02: Inherently, yeah.
- 35:48SPEAKER_01: And also don't based on what he tells her at the top.
- 35:51SPEAKER_02: Why would she not change out of her shoes?
- 35:53SPEAKER_02: Like a type A person is on the go.
- 35:56SPEAKER_02: Like, they have a pair of sensible shoes they can wear to get things.
- 36:00SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 36:01SPEAKER_02: So like that plot hole doesn't make sense to me.
- 36:04SPEAKER_01: Um in a rom com, you can't have a woman without heels on.
- 36:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that is the dumbest.
- 36:11SPEAKER_02: I once I turned 23, I think I was like done with heels.
- 36:16SPEAKER_02: I was like, if I have to be anywhere for longer than like aside, like if I have to be anywhere where I'm gonna be standing for longer than two hours, heels are out.
- 36:26SPEAKER_02: Like, absolutely no way.
- 36:27SPEAKER_02: Like maybe a a p like a chunky one, but even still, like if I if I know I'm not gonna have access to chairs, I'm going in like platform sneakers or like platform, like like docks, where I'm like, I need height, but I don't need fashion.
- 36:42unknown: Right.
- 36:43SPEAKER_01: How tall are you anyway?
- 36:44SPEAKER_02: I'm five six.
- 36:46SPEAKER_01: Okay, so you're not that short exactly.
- 36:48SPEAKER_02: I'm not that short, right?
- 36:50SPEAKER_02: So I'm just like at that point, like I feel like sometimes heels are just more of like a status thing where like I want people to be intimidated by me.
- 36:59SPEAKER_02: And so it doesn't have to be a heel, it just has to be something that's tall.
- 37:05SPEAKER_00: Or and if it's just a giant boot.
- 37:08SPEAKER_02: It's like a plat, like it's sometimes I'm like, you know what?
- 37:10SPEAKER_02: Like, docks are more intimidating than heels in my life.
- 37:14SPEAKER_02: Docks are definitely more intimidating.
- 37:16SPEAKER_02: A woman in docks, I'm like, I'm not fucking with her.
- 37:22unknown: I don't know.
- 37:23SPEAKER_01: That's definitely true.
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: Um but so he takes her to the cast and he he gives us he gives us whole monologue about um like the hist like the meaning behind this castle and everything.
- 37:34SPEAKER_02: Like uh like uh what is the word?
- 37:37SPEAKER_02: Like ruins, like castle ruins on a cliff side that is very clearly CGI for the year 2010.
- 37:45SPEAKER_02: Looking back at it, like it's good CGI.
- 37:48SPEAKER_01: It's not bad.
- 37:50SPEAKER_02: It's not bad, it's moderately okay.
- 37:52SPEAKER_01: There's way worse CGI when they're driving in their car.
- 37:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because that looks so much more fake.
- 37:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so bad.
- 37:58SPEAKER_02: Um, but it's like overlooking the cliff side.
- 38:00SPEAKER_02: So, like, if you watch this movie being like, I want to go to the castle and where they've been, you're gonna be disappointed going to Ireland.
- 38:07SPEAKER_02: I don't know how you could be disappointed because it's a beautiful country.
- 38:10SPEAKER_01: You're not gonna be disappointed going to Ireland, you're gonna be disappointed that that's a lot of people.
- 38:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you're gonna go to this castle and be like, where's the fucking ocean?
- 38:16SPEAKER_02: Or like, what are you talking about?
- 38:19SPEAKER_02: This doesn't exist on a cliffside.
- 38:21SPEAKER_02: Um but like they go to Castle Ruins, it's like sun, the sun is setting, it's super romantic.
- 38:27SPEAKER_02: He's talking about this old like Irish lore, which I have not looked up the validity of it.
- 38:33SPEAKER_02: Um it's and again, I was just like, I don't need to know if it's real or not.
- 38:38SPEAKER_02: Like fairy tales aren't real to begin with, so whatever.
- 38:42SPEAKER_02: Somebody can make it up, and it's a fairy tale.
- 38:45SPEAKER_02: Um, so he tells her this very romantic story, and she's like, Oh, and like they're obviously like you can tell they have like camaraderie now, especially because you just beat up these three guys, and it's like, all right, they're gonna be stuck on this journey together.
- 38:58SPEAKER_02: They've gone through like stuff, like you can tell, like they want to laugh about things together.
- 39:03SPEAKER_01: Because like they're not quite there, but they're like just they're not, but then like, all right, they're gonna be buddies.
- 39:08SPEAKER_02: Um, like she's just like joking, she's like, Are you flirting with me?
- 39:11SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm here to propose, you should know that.
- 39:13SPEAKER_02: And you're like, it's like very things, like it's things you've definitely thought about, but like have never said out loud.
- 39:19SPEAKER_02: So it's funny to hear them said out loud where you're like, I should like break the ice with this, or like make sure no one ever thinks this way, even if they don't think that right now.
- 39:29SPEAKER_02: Um so and he was like, What?
- 39:32SPEAKER_02: What are you talking about?
- 39:33SPEAKER_02: She's like, You're trying to kiss me, and I'm about to compose like what and he's like like you just see the change of face, and it's like it's just funny back and forth where they're never on the same page as each other.
- 39:47SPEAKER_02: Um and then they miss the train because they've been hiking.
- 39:51SPEAKER_01: But but again, 15 minutes up, how long have they been up there?
- 39:55SPEAKER_01: They've been up there two hours.
- 39:58SPEAKER_02: Yes, like I just don't understand yeah, the time doesn't make sense, or maybe like he thinks it's 15 minutes, but it takes her much longer because she's had to hike up and heal.
- 40:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's what I imagine.
- 40:09SPEAKER_01: It must have taken them long, it must just be longer than 15 minutes to get up.
- 40:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it must have been longer because she probably had to slow down, and then they have they try to they hear the train coming in and they're like, oh fuck, and like try to run back, and then she takes a tumble in her heels, and it's very unfortunate.
- 40:26SPEAKER_02: Falls in the mud, it's raised, it's like pouring starts pouring down because it's eyelid.
- 40:31SPEAKER_02: It's like all of course it is every like comedic trope that is happening happens, and it's like very funny because it's just like the way they time the comedic trophes is like perfect, or like they're perfectly placed in a way that makes sense, um rather than just working everything around these like tragic mishaps.
- 40:50SPEAKER_00: Um so many of them.
- 40:55SPEAKER_02: There's so many, and it's they're all so funny.
- 40:58SPEAKER_02: Um and so she gets to the train, and then this is where she ends up in Dingle because the train, whatever, ticket, booth, operator, attendant is just like, well, that was the last train because of the rain.
- 41:13SPEAKER_02: And that it's not gonna come for a couple days because it's the weekend in Cork and public transportation doesn't work on Sunday.
- 41:21SPEAKER_01: They they keep making this whole thing about nobody like does anything on a Sunday.
- 41:25SPEAKER_02: Like, no one wants to go in.
- 41:26SPEAKER_02: It's like very like emphasizing like no one wants to go into Dublin, and you're like, alright, so like you get the sense that like whatever happens in Dublin, it's not gonna be great.
- 41:36SPEAKER_02: Um, very smart writing, in my opinion.
- 41:41SPEAKER_02: Um so then they stay with this man and his wife in their house, yeah, in a BB, and they're like a very older couple that's like very in love, but also very traditional, because then they have to they have to convince, like they're like, you're married, right?
- 41:58SPEAKER_02: Because we only have one room, and you can't stay together in the same room if you're not married.
- 42:02SPEAKER_02: What kind of people would we be?
- 42:04SPEAKER_01: We just sent single Italians away.
- 42:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 42:08SPEAKER_02: So um, yeah, they have this dinner oh the dinner scene where they're just like going around, like talking, like they have an Italian older couple together and they're talking about love and like asking about them because they're just so disgusting.
- 42:28SPEAKER_02: They do the like being in love keeping the flame alive, and because you're like, alright, we got there, like we have to fill up the romantic tension, but we haven't been able to do it, like there hasn't been an opportunity because things just keep going wrong, so now they're having like this nice dinner, um, and things just keep going wrong.
- 42:50SPEAKER_01: But the the so first of all, the the the the hosts couple uh they kiss.
- 42:57SPEAKER_01: Then the Italian couple kiss and they like full on it's like they're about to like just do it.
- 43:02SPEAKER_02: Like there's a like there's 100% fondling going on under the table.
- 43:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 43:09SPEAKER_02: And then they're like, alright, the government could be like you guys are so in love, you should kiss.
- 43:14SPEAKER_02: And like they've just spent like all day making this dinner for the host together, right?
- 43:20SPEAKER_02: Am I thinking that right?
- 43:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, because you have to kill the chicken.
- 43:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like they say that they're married so that they can sleep in the same room, and then they prepare chicken, and then um they have to kiss um at this dinner table.
- 43:36SPEAKER_01: But I I it's so weird that the other couples are like, oh kiss, kiss in front of it when it's cold, kiss it, do it.
- 43:43SPEAKER_02: Like, no, and he's like, fine, I'll just fucking do it.
- 43:45SPEAKER_02: And then it's like you're like, yes!
- 43:47SPEAKER_01: So passionate.
- 43:48SPEAKER_02: It's a good kiss, like compared to the other kisses that are just like nonchalant.
- 43:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 43:55SPEAKER_01: The first one is like a grotesque.
- 43:57SPEAKER_01: The second one is quite disgusting.
- 43:59unknown: Yeah.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: Like such a hard contrast, and you're like, Oh, this is like a very romantic, like kiss.
- 44:03SPEAKER_02: Like I don't know.
- 44:05SPEAKER_02: It's it's yeah, and it's like it's like a rom-com where it's like nice to watch movies too, I think, where like romance isn't and intimacy isn't contingent on like intercourse.
- 44:20SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 44:20SPEAKER_02: Because there are a lot of movies that rely on like sexual tension leading to intercourse, and like this movie is just like, no, like they it just have to this movie is a PG as well.
- 44:31SPEAKER_02: So but like this movie is just like, oh, they have really good chemistry, and like okay, they kiss each other, but like they don't cross each other's boundaries again because like she clearly wants to be married, and he's like, I'm just gonna kiss you, yeah, so that we can like get past this dinner, and so then you have this romantic tension.
- 44:54SPEAKER_02: It's very sweet where they're just like, Okay, we're moving on, and then they have to sleep together in the same bed again.
- 44:59SPEAKER_01: Then they share a bed and they share a bed and she is so terrified.
- 45:05SPEAKER_02: She's like, Oh my god, I have she's like, I've she's like, Oh my god, I have not felt a sexual emotion ever in my relationship with Jeremy, and now I'm sleeping in a bed with a man and confused, and he's just like, Alright, guess I'll fall asleep.
- 45:23SPEAKER_02: Like they're both awake, but she does, she looks petrified, and you're like, Type A, Miss Type A has feelings for someone.
- 45:31SPEAKER_02: Um so they make it through the night.
- 45:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they wake up and he's like got his arm around her the next morning.
- 45:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they're like cuddled up.
- 45:40SPEAKER_02: It's very sweet where it's just like, okay, I like someone, but I don't want to cross the boundaries.
- 45:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 45:45SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 45:46SPEAKER_02: It's like very innocent where I'm just like, man, I wonder if like it just like reminds me of like, I don't know, like when you're dating or you like someone like back when you were like a teenager in college, where like things are innocent, and you're like, I'm not gonna, I'm not gonna fuck this up.
- 46:02SPEAKER_01: Can I can I touch her shoulder?
- 46:06SPEAKER_02: And it's like he like removes it very gently.
- 46:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's like, I didn't do this.
- 46:13SPEAKER_01: It's the most nervous you ever see him.
- 46:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 46:15SPEAKER_02: And it's like, I don't know, it's very like very humanizing of him, especially because he's been like unlikable throughout the thing.
- 46:23SPEAKER_02: Um and so then they go and they're like, Alright, we have to they wake up and they're like, they're like, okay, can we like can you drive us into Dublin?
- 46:33SPEAKER_02: And he was like, Oh, I wish you he was like, You should have waken up earlier.
- 46:37SPEAKER_02: The wife's already gone.
- 46:38SPEAKER_02: I can't take you because the wife took the car, and they're like, You gotta be like, oh great.
- 46:44SPEAKER_01: Uh and they're like, oh we'll wait until she comes back.
- 46:47SPEAKER_01: He's like, No, she's in Dublin.
- 46:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 46:49SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, we missed the entire wedding scene.
- 46:53SPEAKER_01: What wedding scene?
- 46:55SPEAKER_02: They crash a wedding.
- 46:57SPEAKER_01: That's way later.
- 46:59SPEAKER_02: Is that later?
- 47:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's like near the end.
- 47:03SPEAKER_01: No, it's not way later, sorry.
- 47:06SPEAKER_01: No, it's right after this.
- 47:07SPEAKER_01: We missed the wedding.
- 47:07SPEAKER_01: It's right after this.
- 47:08SPEAKER_01: Oh, it's after the dinner?
- 47:09SPEAKER_01: It's right after this.
- 47:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 47:11SPEAKER_01: Because they uh they will cause the hailstones.
- 47:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they have to hitchhike, and there's hailstones, and so they run and they run straight into a wedding.
- 47:21SPEAKER_02: I was like, we missed the wedding.
- 47:23SPEAKER_02: Um, so yeah, they hitchhike.
- 47:25SPEAKER_02: Okay, I forgot.
- 47:26SPEAKER_02: They hitchhike because they have no other way to get it.
- 47:30SPEAKER_01: Because they have there's no other way to get.
- 47:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 47:31SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 47:32SPEAKER_02: And she's like, she's like, I can't wait.
- 47:34SPEAKER_02: And he's at this point, he's just like, It's nice where you're like, he's like accepted that she's the way she is.
- 47:40SPEAKER_02: And he's like, Alright, I'll do it.
- 47:41SPEAKER_02: Again, he just goes along with it.
- 47:43SPEAKER_02: He's like, I'll go along with you.
- 47:44SPEAKER_02: I need my money, and also you have no idea what you're doing.
- 47:49SPEAKER_01: Um you will get ripped off everywhere.
- 47:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, so like, yeah, they're like buddies at this point, just traveling together and hitchhiking.
- 47:59SPEAKER_02: And it's also like he like it comes out like he also needs to get to Dublin.
- 48:05SPEAKER_02: Like he has motivations of going to Dublin.
- 48:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 48:08SPEAKER_02: And it like slowly unravels why like it's not the it's not purely the money.
- 48:12SPEAKER_02: Um, and you learn that at the wedding.
- 48:14SPEAKER_02: And like the wedding is like it's for sure the reason why the vows have like this set of vows has blown up, and I think it's because of the movie.
- 48:23SPEAKER_01: Like I was gonna say, I hate this set of vows so much.
- 48:30SPEAKER_02: I have no idea.
- 48:30SPEAKER_01: You think so?
- 48:31SPEAKER_02: I think it's of this movie because I want I like I don't know what else it's in.
- 48:36SPEAKER_02: I feel like someone like uh had to be like a small subset of people, like it's just the ripple effect where like yeah, people have used these vows and then like put them in captions and now it's just slowly rippled.
- 48:50SPEAKER_02: But I'm like, I like this came from this movie.
- 48:52SPEAKER_01: Um type of verse, but it's the uh the stay steal, lie, and cheat speech I wrote now, which is just like if you if uh if you're gonna steal, steal what my heart or something like that, if you're gonna be like, and like I like may you never lie like or lie, steal or cheat.
- 49:11SPEAKER_02: And it's like if you must like steal, like steal my breath or whatever, and like if you must lie, I like want to like steal my breath away or take my breath away.
- 49:23SPEAKER_02: Um, like lie, like may you lie with me like all the rest of like the days of your life and then cheat, like cheat death.
- 49:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I'm like, oh, this is the speech, this is where it came from.
- 49:34SPEAKER_02: And of course, I watched the movie, it's like very sweet.
- 49:38SPEAKER_02: It's it is a sweet speech.
- 49:39SPEAKER_02: Like it's you're like, thank god, it's not some random like wedding speech, but now like watching it now, you're like, this is so corny because it's been overused everywhere.
- 49:50SPEAKER_01: So much, so much, it's used all the time.
- 49:53SPEAKER_02: It's like, all right, like if your love is so novel, maybe come up with something creative and inspired, but I guess not.
- 50:03SPEAKER_01: Hey, not everyone's a writer.
- 50:05SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 50:09SPEAKER_01: But um yeah, Declan gets upset, basically, hearing all this, and he um he storms off of the wedding.
- 50:17SPEAKER_02: He storms off, yeah.
- 50:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's just straight up not vibing at the wedding they've crashed.
- 50:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 50:24SPEAKER_01: So you're like, obviously, something's gone on with him there.
- 50:26SPEAKER_01: You're like, I oh, I see something I see from his past now.
- 50:29SPEAKER_01: I can kind of see what's going on.
- 50:30SPEAKER_02: She's very drunk.
- 50:31SPEAKER_02: She likes, oh, again with the heels, she has heels that are not properly secured, and it like nearly concuss-I don't know how it doesn't concuss the bride.
- 50:40SPEAKER_01: Um I mean, she's got a big dent in her head, like a gash out there.
- 50:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there's like just a divot in her forehead.
- 50:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 50:47SPEAKER_02: And then Anna gets really drunk because she's embarrassed, which is relatable at this wedding.
- 50:54SPEAKER_02: She wants to be married, she's just like ruined this wedding experience for the bride, like these strangers.
- 51:00SPEAKER_02: And Declan is brooding, and she's like, What's going on?
- 51:03SPEAKER_02: And we find out that um she's like, you know, like he's yeah, he's brooding, and then she's super drunk, and then he she throws up on him.
- 51:13SPEAKER_01: She goes, they go to kiss, basically, and they flirt and they go to kiss, and she throws off everywhere of all they can.
- 51:20SPEAKER_01: And then so he carries her away, and they wake up the next morning on a bench, and she leaves him sleeping, and you and then you see the bus, the coach drive off, and he sees it going away.
- 51:30SPEAKER_02: And he's like torn, he's disappointed, you're like, Oh, he really liked her.
- 51:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's so angry, he's so annoying.
- 51:36SPEAKER_02: He's so angry that like he's like and like it's so funny, like those moments too where you're like, oh, like he I don't know, it's like nice where you're like, okay, like he just jet he genuinely liked her.
- 51:49SPEAKER_01: She gets to see a real moment from him that he's not like hiding from her.
- 51:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 51:54SPEAKER_01: Because she's standing behind him with with cups of coffee that she's gone to get.
- 51:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 51:58SPEAKER_02: And it's like very sweet.
- 52:00SPEAKER_02: And it's just like, like, even where it's just like, oh, like, even if like it's not romantic, like it doesn't feel like a romantic, like, oh, I've lost her, where he's just like, oh fuck, like she left without me.
- 52:11SPEAKER_02: Like, I like this is just a person I was connecting with, and like, yeah, I've just lost this genuine connection, or like this friend that I was hoping to make.
- 52:21SPEAKER_01: Um, and then she's like, or the money.
- 52:27SPEAKER_02: Um, but she uh but yeah, she hasn't left and she's bought two tickets for him, and he's like, Oh, and she's like, Yeah, of course you're coming with me.
- 52:34SPEAKER_02: And you're like, these are buddies, and it's sweet.
- 52:38SPEAKER_01: Um, she's like, There's one in 20 minutes, it's fine, we'll wait.
- 52:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and they actually make it this time against all.
- 52:44SPEAKER_01: They finally get to Dublin.
- 52:46SPEAKER_02: They finally get to Dublin.
- 52:48SPEAKER_02: She asks why it's so important for him to be in Dublin, and it comes out that um his he had a fiance who ran off with his mother's cladar ring, which is an Irish yeah, which is an actual Irish tradition.
- 53:03SPEAKER_02: Um and if anybody doesn't know what a cladar ring is, um I didn't.
- 53:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so it's like a ring that has like a heart and a crown, and the direction that you wear it like tells people their status.
- 53:18SPEAKER_02: Um which is like smart.
- 53:20SPEAKER_02: I was like, everyone should fucking wear cladar rings, because like it's not enough to do wedding rings, in my opinion.
- 53:27SPEAKER_02: Like, like single, like it's smart.
- 53:30SPEAKER_01: Like I like this whole like I don't want a big, I don't want a big proposal, but I want a uh huge ring.
- 53:39SPEAKER_02: No, I don't want a huge ring.
- 53:40SPEAKER_02: Like, and I'm not saying like you don't need a big proposal, but like it'd be so much easier if everyone had a signifier as to whether or not they were singles, you don't have to like waste time like around the topic.
- 53:52SPEAKER_02: You're just like, like, it's nice when you see someone with a wedding ring, you're like, alright, I don't know.
- 53:57SPEAKER_02: No, no romantic intent.
- 53:59SPEAKER_02: Like, not that that's like my first primary, like, that's my my intention, but like I'm a woman of a certain age where if I'm interacting with a man, I'd like to know like my boundaries, or like know that he's not approaching me because he has expectations of like whatever interaction we're about to have.
- 54:21SPEAKER_02: Although I guess a wedding ring doesn't necessarily stop that.
- 54:24SPEAKER_01: Um but it's at least like a step up for it.
- 54:27SPEAKER_01: It's like some kind of interesting.
- 54:29SPEAKER_02: So the platter ring is like this heart crown ring, and if it's like facing outwards, I think that means you're single, but if it's facing inwards, if it's facing inwards, it means that your heart is taken.
- 54:43SPEAKER_02: I forget which way it is, but it's just like one way or the other.
- 54:46SPEAKER_02: That's cool.
- 54:47SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, it's very neat, and it's like not like super flashy, which I think is very sweet, also.
- 54:53SPEAKER_02: It's just a sentiment.
- 54:54SPEAKER_02: Um whoever listens to this in the future, this is not an excuse for you to get me a rink-a-dink ring.
- 55:04SPEAKER_02: I mean, I'll appreciate it, but don't be like you said you didn't want anything flashy.
- 55:08SPEAKER_02: No, I never said that.
- 55:10SPEAKER_02: I just think they're sweet.
- 55:13SPEAKER_03: Um whoever stalks me to be future.
- 55:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, your future, your future fiance is gonna get you.
- 55:24SPEAKER_00: It's gonna listen to everything, every every single thing that you do.
- 55:32SPEAKER_02: If there's no rock, it better be pristine.
- 55:36SPEAKER_01: But hang on, hang on.
- 55:38SPEAKER_01: You are getting your own ring, you're because you're the one proposing.
- 55:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 55:42SPEAKER_01: So you can do what you want.
- 55:47SPEAKER_02: I'm manifesting my life as a spinster woman in Ireland.
- 55:57SPEAKER_00: Just g every four years you get to try and propose to someone.
- 56:01SPEAKER_02: And if this ends up being myself.
- 56:03SPEAKER_02: Um, anyway.
- 56:06SPEAKER_02: Anyway, so he wants his cladar ring back because it's his mother's.
- 56:10SPEAKER_02: And you also learn that this pub that he's he needs the money for, he started with his fiance and his best friend, both of whom ran away together, which is really sad.
- 56:22SPEAKER_02: To Dublin.
- 56:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, to Dublin, and you're like, alright, Dublin fucking sucks.
- 56:27SPEAKER_02: Um and he's come because he wants his mom's ring back.
- 56:32SPEAKER_02: And um and but then like he goes to the hotel with her to make sure that she goes back, and also because she wants to pay him.
- 56:41SPEAKER_02: And like Jeremy, Jeremy, oh yeah, yeah, Jeremy, Jeremy, like, is super surprised.
- 56:48SPEAKER_02: Like, she lets Jeremy know that she's on her way, so it's not a surprise that she's there.
- 56:54SPEAKER_02: Um, but Jeremy's like relieved, and you're like, she's like been in touch with him once throughout this entire ordeal.
- 57:00SPEAKER_02: Um he's like relieved, he's like, wow, so much shit.
- 57:04SPEAKER_02: And I was like, what kind of man wouldn't just be like, I need to go take a rental car?
- 57:08SPEAKER_02: It's easy to get a rental car in a city.
- 57:11SPEAKER_02: Like, what type of like devoted boyfriend would not just take a rental car out four hours to get his car.
- 57:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, literally, it's gonna be like four hours of the city.
- 57:20SPEAKER_02: After she's had like the worst trip in the world, he's like, She'll figure it out.
- 57:24SPEAKER_01: I'm like, Yeah.
- 57:26SPEAKER_02: Um, so you're like, I don't like Jeremy at this point.
- 57:30SPEAKER_02: Like, no one likes Jeremy, and it's like it's also really disappointing that like they give like it's um Adam Scott, and he has like no comedic purpose in this movie.
- 57:40SPEAKER_02: So you're like, what is Adam Scott doing in this movie?
- 57:42SPEAKER_01: He does nothing in this movie, but this is also like pre.
- 57:45SPEAKER_01: I feel like this is pre uh his like romantic comedy style.
- 57:51SPEAKER_02: Was he like I mean he was in Parks and Rex in 2010, wasn't he?
- 57:55SPEAKER_01: Or was that not?
- 57:56SPEAKER_01: I think I think that was like a year later he joined.
- 57:59SPEAKER_02: Okay, so he hadn't hit, okay.
- 58:00SPEAKER_01: Um before Parks and Rick, he wasn't really doing like he was in uh Stepbrothers as like the villain brother.
- 58:07SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 58:08SPEAKER_02: But yeah, okay, I guess that makes sense.
- 58:11SPEAKER_02: I was just thinking, you like you watch this and you're like, this is just a waste of Adam Scott in this movie.
- 58:15SPEAKER_01: Like Yeah, it really is.
- 58:17SPEAKER_02: It's right, and you're like, what am I rooting for?
- 58:20SPEAKER_02: Like the only thing I have to root for this guy is his is that he's a surgeon, I guess.
- 58:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 58:28SPEAKER_02: Um then he like he proposes to her right in the lobby.
- 58:33SPEAKER_02: It's so L.
- 58:35SPEAKER_01: This is what I'm talking about.
- 58:37SPEAKER_01: It's this is the worst proposal I've ever seen in my life.
- 58:40SPEAKER_02: It's so abrupt, it's awful, it's a horrendous proposal.
- 58:44SPEAKER_02: So, like, to the point of the movie, you're like, Yeah, this this is not what she wants.
- 58:48SPEAKER_02: Like, it's a nice thing where it's just like be careful what you want because if you really want it, you won't be disappointed.
- 58:54SPEAKER_02: But like, she shows up after this horrendous like what an inconsiderate person who's like had the most horrendous travel, they haven't even caught up, she hasn't been able to like freshen herself up or anything, done nothing, yeah.
- 59:06SPEAKER_02: She just got there, fresh to the hotel, and like he's proposes to her in the in front of the masses.
- 59:13SPEAKER_01: Um it's so that they can all film it, basically.
- 59:17SPEAKER_01: Like later on one day, he hasn't even put it on Facebook yet.
- 59:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like you hear him say, like, oh, can you send that to me?
- 59:21SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm gonna put it on Facebook later.
- 59:23SPEAKER_02: And you're like, Okay, so this man is like clearly about status, and like on Facebook as well.
- 59:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 59:30SPEAKER_02: Again, again with the Facebook.
- 59:33SPEAKER_01: Um Right, again, it was popular at the time, but that's oh god.
- 59:37SPEAKER_01: Um But yeah, so you see, and you see Declan watching this, and you see he's disappointed too, but it's also like he leaves because like right as it's happening, he leaves, and uh he calls his ex basically to go and like talk things over and get the ring back and everything.
- 59:55SPEAKER_01: Um and Anna goes home uh back to Boston.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_02: To Boston, so and the the whole like from the beginning, they've been trying to get into this luxury co-op like apartment building.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_02: Um and so you find out that they're having like an engagement party, she's not like super content, she's back with these people she doesn't really connect with, even though they're her friends, and you're like which is like really related to the thing.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_02: Again, another nothing wrong you get.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, it definitely happens, but it's again it's another her best friend is um I don't know her real name.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_01: It's D from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Caitlin something, and it's such a nothing wrong for her.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_01: She has nothing to do.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there's like Again, another person that's so funny that does nothing in this.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_02: It's like so disappointing where you're like the movie is more comedic in like circumstance than it is in character.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_02: Um so like you're just like there's all these missed opportunities to make these people so funny.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_02: Um but so like she's there, she's not having a great time, like she feels lonely in this crowded, beautiful apartment, and then like she talks, she pulls the fire alarm because of a conversation they've had before.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_01: But then there's a bit there is a bit first where you find out why he proposed, though.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and you find out you find out he proposed just to get the apartment.
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_02: Like, how'd you propose?
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_02: Like, did you did you you propose or did he?
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_02: And he's like, Well, like, we've been trying to get into this.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_02: She was like, like the friend is like, You've got the perfect apartment, you're about to have the perfect marriage.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_02: He was like, Yeah, like it just made like it goes, well, we had to like you couldn't have one without the other.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_02: And Anna's like, excuse me, what the fuck?
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and you would be why would you admit that in front of her?
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_01: If that if that's a real thing, like why would you say that in front of her?
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_02: Idiot, and like you can see these status people like like like frowning, and they're like sad for Anna.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_02: Um and you're like, damn, like we even we wouldn't stoop that low.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_02: So yeah, she pulls the fire alarm and he starts because she and Declan have talked about like what would be saved from a fire, and like he talks about the ring.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_02: Um and like she realizes there's nothing she wants in the apartment, and you just see fucking Jeremy trying to save all the valuables, like all his tech.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_02: He's like, We haven't posted the video yet, make sure we save the camera.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_02: Um, it's like thank god they didn't post it yet.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_02: And so then you see, like, she goes through this realization where it's like this life that she's built up for herself is not the life she wants.
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_02: And then she goes back to Dublin.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_02: Back to Ireland, yeah.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and she's like goes back to Ireland.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_02: You see Declan like trying to save his bar, and he's like, turn things around, like he's in a better mood, he's like invigorated.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_02: You see him like the car, like is in better shape, he's like like actually dressed nicely and like being like a good host to like guests at the pub.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_02: Well, yeah, kind of and um yeah, well it's like the pub had been saved, right?
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_01: Or what yeah, the pub's been saved, yeah.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the pub had been saved, so it's like invigorated, and he's running this pub really well, and like you see, and so you know that she I think they show her going back to Dublin, but you know that she showed her.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_01: I feel like they do show it, or they show like I feel like they show a plane or some something like that.
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they show so that you know you're back in Dublin, so you're like, she has to be around somewhere.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_02: Like so, like you show her in this pub, and then you get this food complaint, like the waiter is like they're food, the dry chicken, which is a callback to earlier.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, a callback to the beginning.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_02: Um, and he's just like, What are you talking?
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_02: Like, what's wrong with this person?
- 1:03:47SPEAKER_02: And he comes out and he's like classic grumpy declan, and like and also straight.
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_01: He's like, Who said something about my chicken?
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_02: Like, what's who said this?
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_02: And it's her standing up, and it's just like obviously like they're both like have like these they're always bickering and like yeah, getting at each other, and you can see like he's like super, he's like, Oh, it's like, oh, it's you, and you like you can't read his face because it's just like the mix of like, am I pissed?
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_02: Or like, yeah, what are you like what's going on here?
- 1:04:20SPEAKER_02: And like in leapier fashion, she proposes, and you're like, Oh my god, look at her! She went for it, yeah, and he leaves her to stay.
- 1:04:31SPEAKER_02: She just walks off.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_02: He's like leaves her in the restaurant, and then this is the most questionable part where she walks out to the cliff sides, and then you're like, Oh my god, this woman she's gonna jump.
- 1:04:43SPEAKER_02: Just about to tell Virginia wolf herself.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_00: What an ending that would have been.
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_00: That would have been like, oh, this is bold.
- 1:04:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you're like, what is this?
- 1:04:53SPEAKER_02: And like, it's so questionable how close she is to the cliffside.
- 1:04:57SPEAKER_00: I know, I know.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_00: It's so windy, you just click right on the cliffside.
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_02: So windy.
- 1:05:02SPEAKER_02: Again, she's in heels, which she cannot be trusted in.
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_02: And like you see, and he was and she's like, and they like have like this very like she's like very distraught because she thinks she's been rejected, and you can tell like he thinks it's funny that she stormed off.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but he's gonna give her a hard time about it, and you're like, Alright, it's gonna work out, and it's just like perfect, and then they clip they kiss on the perfect cliff side, and then um he proposes with the cladar ring, yeah, he's gotten back because it was the one thing he wanted to get from the fire, and it's because of her.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_02: Um which again, you're like, Did this man know that she was gonna come back?
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_02: Like, what a smooth or was he like I don't know, and it's just like or like what's the right thing.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_02: No, I think he just had the ring.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_02: Like he just No, but like he gets the ring back when he's in Dublin and it's Yeah, I think he just keeps it.
- 1:05:55SPEAKER_01: It just keeps hold of it.
- 1:05:57SPEAKER_01: I don't think he doesn't even do it.
- 1:05:59SPEAKER_01: I think he
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_02: know like do you think he like went back because he was like like do you think from the beginning he had wanted to get the ring back or did you think no like I think like he had a realization at the wedding or whatever that he wanted the ring because he realizes he can love another human again yeah which is like very sweet um but also you're like man this man just had faith that or he was just like I like I want to know if he was like she's gonna come back and gonna have this ring or if he was just like I'm just open to love again.
- 1:06:36SPEAKER_01: I think it's just that I'm open I think it's the thing that I'm I'm just open to love again.
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_03: Anyway.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_02: Or he just sees that other or he sees Jeremy's like this is not gonna work she'll be back she'll be back um so then it cut it cuts to them and it cuts to them they're like off on their honeymoon in it in the recovered car and Louis and Louis is strapped to the room Louis Vuitton um and then it's off into the bad CGI sunset roads travel for Mark Twain honeymoon part two and now you need you need to write this as a as like a Mark Twain version I don't know I mean isn't that the Mark Twain format it's like two unlikely friends kind of but yeah I'm pretty sure it's like it's just the comparison that I find so funny they're on a it's two unlikely friends go on a journey together I think that's the Mark Twain trope I'm pretty archetype um okay so you've pretty you've you defended it throughout the whole affair I don't feel like you need to like give any more defense in a couple of movie it's an easy it's an easy watch nothing is super nothing is super offensive or super stereotypical unless you're Irish I guess um yeah and maybe to Irish people they're like fuck this movie or something yeah I mean if I were Irish version I'd be like yeah this isn't great like you just with all the stereotypical things completely like defied geo geography and customs and public transportation um but it's a sweet movie I mean like my biggest qualms are that you just want more from like Adam Scott and um what only because it's him though if it was played by anyone else.
- 1:08:48SPEAKER_02: What's your last name?
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_01: I just thought of it.
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_01: Caitlin Olsen yeah but you just want to I think it's only because it's them if it was just any random person I don't think you'd want more of that character necessarily I don't I the character is so insignificant to the the purpose of this I don't really care that much that they're not in it really but yeah yeah it's like it's a quick movie nothing's heavy very quick it's like 90 minutes and like they're not like even like the drama like the backstory like the rom-con is very light like you have an alcoholic father but like she doesn't ruminate on it where it's just like this thing that's completely jaded like she's lived with it she's accepted it and like it doesn't seem like a thing right she loves her father but doesn't rely on him and like she's independent because of her upbringing and like he's clearly jaded about an ex but doesn't think all women are trash like he's just like jaded and he's like yeah this is some bullshit in my life like the only person that pisses you off really is Jeremy in the movie.
- 1:09:54SPEAKER_02: You really hate him I get why you do but yeah he's just like an inconsiderate boyfriend.
- 1:10:00SPEAKER_01: He is yeah but yeah that's again trope of like yeah if they wasn't if it wasn't for him like imagine he was just like a a very decent guy and she fell in love along the way that would be so much worse.
- 1:10:12SPEAKER_02: Oh my god that'd be so sad I'm trying to think I'm sure I've seen that once before yeah I'm trying to think the mood like the soundtrack isn't super notable except for I don't remember a single song there's just the dream a little dream when they're sitting in the bed petrified together and you're like what is this choice?
- 1:10:36SPEAKER_02: It feels really out of place because you I don't remember any other music like no music whatsoever that song that is like what what it's so loud in the middle of the movie.
- 1:10:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah it's a nice movie I enjoyed it having seen it for the first time I knew nothing I didn't know anything about it going in and I I intentionally I knew I'd seen the poster and I knew it was like like set at leap year and set during the leap year and that was about it.
- 1:11:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah it's just very sweet I'm trying to think I mean who doesn't love Amy Adams?
- 1:11:10SPEAKER_02: She's just so likable yeah and like so personable um yeah I'll watch her in anything really it's not like the greatest like movie but like she does bring depth to a person that would otherwise be unlikable and like super type A.
- 1:11:25SPEAKER_02: Like Catherine Cliver playing this would be like oh God no um and Matthew good I don't think I've seen too much that he's in aside from like the crown oh is he in the crown oh wow he looks very different.
- 1:11:41SPEAKER_02: He plays um I think I'm pretty sure he's in the crown he plays like Princess Margaret's uh fiance like the photographer I think oh yeah it says Anthony Armstrong Jones whoever that is showing myself up with with my royals but yeah apparently yeah I'm trying to look up apparently he's done a lot of things but I haven't seen those things no I don't think I've seen anything with him he's a very good looking fellow he looks so different looking at him in this like other picture for without his beard yeah that is leapier that's leapier that is leapier so let's unless you have any final thoughts in it that you want to bring up let's move on to the final segment I think it's just a very light movie where you're just like I want to like and believe in love without being bitter about it when you can turn on because like they gotta go through some shit and you're like I'm happy for them both and will you will you be watching it again soon oh yeah for sure definitely once it's back on Netflix.
- 1:13:04SPEAKER_02: Once it's back on Netflix then I don't have to pay did you pay did you you didn't watch it uh recent like uh the last couple of days have you no not um recently I think I watched it I honestly think I w I think it's always on in the winter like on Netflix around Valentine's Day so I think I'm pretty sure I won't be back soon before quarantine.
- 1:13:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah oh my god that's so sad yeah it's coming back okay let's talk about like that did you manage to think of another movie then for the uh um okay I'll talk about I'll talk about Shakespeare and love cool I haven't seen it but I'm not gonna watch it so feel free to I would say that's one you can completely miss.
- 1:13:59SPEAKER_02: I mean it's the one Gwyneth Powstro I can't I can't what's her name?
- 1:14:05SPEAKER_02: Gwyneth Palthrow?
- 1:14:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah it's so Shakespeare and Love was the movie that Gwyneth Paltrow or maybe that was Emma that she won an Oscar for uh no I think it was Shakespeare in love.
- 1:14:18SPEAKER_02: Okay yeah I think it was Shakespeare and Love um and it also won an Oscar for Best Picture for whenever it came out and like I remember watching this movie and being like what like it is complete like shmoozy like romance like I wouldn't be so I feel like it has to be a rom-com because it's comedic in the way that it's set in Shakespearean times and so she wants to act and be a part of the theater and falls in love with Shakespeare.
- 1:14:55SPEAKER_01: Um so you have cross-dressing involved and Ben Athleck is in it and so it's like the basis the basis is basically like oh how the context of how Shakespeare came up with Romeo and Juliet was through this tragic love story that he couldn't marry this woman who was promised to someone else in court um and she's acting in this production yeah and it's it's not just seems so boring it's it's very boring I mean it's um Ralph Fiannis's little brother is the main lead and he's like very intriguing to look at like he has very distinctive features and Guinness Paltrow is like like stunning like she's in her youth but you're like it's one of those movies where you're like this was just a Harvey Weinstein Oscar campaign well yeah it's complete that's the biggest one where they say like that was the money campaign so much for because it beat um Sage in private Ryan which everyone was like that's a guaranteed win and yeah yeah you watch this movie and you're like there's nothing to root for Judy Dench is in it also as the queen for like five minutes.
- 1:16:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah doesn't she win an Oscar for like the shortest amount of time on screen or something for this movie.
- 1:16:20SPEAKER_02: Oh for this movie?
- 1:16:21SPEAKER_02: I think it's this movie.
- 1:16:22SPEAKER_01: Like this movie went an Oscar for like five minutes on screen.
- 1:16:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah it has crazy I don't know like people love this movie and I'm like it's a great movie but it's completely like overrated and like has all these accolades and if you're like the writing's not that great like the plot isn't super great it's whatever and I'm just like I don't know it was like people in court cheated on each other all the time like they had status and they had money like no one cared like they could have easily just gone about still having although I guess she like crosses the ocean or whatever like the whole point is that they can't be together no matter what because she's betrothed and so it's like the kind of a little bit Romeo and Juliet esque.
- 1:17:08SPEAKER_02: It is Romeo and Juliet in the context of like he's the tortured artist and this is how he writes Romeo and Juliet alright that's it okay buddy like great I don't know I'm not gonna watch I'm never gonna watch it yeah I've never been in love to the point where I've been heartbroken and been like I can't move on and you're like I'm it's gonna happen just I have to let it happen so you're like you watch this movie and you're like you're you had a fling and I guess this is the love of your life and it's hard but also you're an extremely successful play right now like you've achieved your dream and can do the thing you love and it just happened that the woman you love didn't work out so you're a white privileged man how much else can you brood about you're gonna be the most famous writer of all time I do not care I don't care I didn't get everything I wanted so I don't know this movie's just hard to root for and you're like mostly just a this love story and you're like it's supposed to be rich and deep and you're like I'm not getting anything else except this love story.
- 1:18:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah at all yeah so I would say Shakespeare and love I do not support I I wish that I had yeah I wish I had more exciting movies where I'm just like people I'm trying to think where it's like No it's fine like that's a that's a good choice because like there's people that love that movie so yeah yeah there I mean I mean we're on like I mean I'm talking about rom coms because I just love rom coms and I was vastly disappointed in Shakespeare and love because of all the accolades and like the like awards it's received.
- 1:19:16SPEAKER_01: I mean I've yeah I'm a huge rom com fan and I've never got around to watching it because I've like I'm not gonna like it I know I'm never gonna enjoy it and yeah plus the whole campaign stuff with Harvey Weinstein and just like uh that taints it's yeah I feel like anything now too like it's so hard watching movies that I do like from the one scene like production company because I'm just like it's all tainted like it's all it's all dirty yeah yeah I definitely agree with that okay so um before we go do you have anything you want to plug at the moment and how can we find you online?
- 1:19:58SPEAKER_02: I'm very online unfortunately um again we all are comedians and I'm like I'm trying I'm trying so hard to limit at least like which is like so counterintuitive to be like I just like I I'm not pressuring myself to not be on social media but I'm putting like this expectation on myself to stop this sounds so bad to stop interacting with people on social media like I just find myself consuming too much or like yeah scrolling through comments where I'm like if I'm not going to actually have an exchange like if I'm not invested in having a conversation about this thing then I shouldn't be like reading or consuming that content which is really hard because it's just like I want to reply to things also it's also just taking up a lot of my time and like emotional energy trying to come up with things that I don't actually want to talk about.
- 1:20:58SPEAKER_02: Um so I'm very online I'm on Twitter and Instagram and my handle is the same for both so it's at ng o c b u i i um and I just got a TikTok after telling myself I would stop that I would cut back on social media I got a TikTok although I was tick tock TikTok's very fun in terms of like creating and just putting stuff out there.
- 1:21:29SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm starting to enjoy it to be honest.
- 1:21:31SPEAKER_02: It's just like nice because I'm like I can be bad and who cares because it's like the algorithm is so random it's just like I don't even know if I'm gonna it's just like I don't know if my friends are gonna see this.
- 1:21:41SPEAKER_02: There's no pressure for it to be good or bad.
- 1:21:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah and it's just like who cares?
- 1:21:46SPEAKER_02: Um so it's it's kind of nice in terms of just like getting over creative blocks so I'm on that and then I also write a newsletter that I'm trying to write more regularly and it's called uh it's a Substack newsletter so it's bobaqueen.substack.com and I mostly just review things I either love or love to hate.
- 1:22:11SPEAKER_02: Perfect perfect if anyone's listening to this and loves to love or loves to hate stuff how I've reviewed Leafier and Only Living Boy in New York I write a wordy newsletter I mean it's usually like I try to keep under like a 10-15 minute read on movies so I will literally review movies live as I watch them in this newsletter.
- 1:22:35SPEAKER_02: So I'm trying to think I've reviewed Moonlight which um which I think more people should see moonlight like with Cher and the very young Nicholas cage and oh oh not moonlight I'm so sorry is it is that Moonlight Moonrise that's it's moon uh moonstruck moon I thought you were talking about moonlight about like Oscar winning movies um I was like yes everyone should see moonlight yes everyone should see moonlight that's an like incredible movie but Moonstruck as a romp com yes also very good like the share is incredible so I've talked about Moonstruck and I've also talked about um the kissing booth movies where I just I watched both of them back to back because I knew they would be bad um and I wrote about that and that's been the best performing newsletter uh as people told me I'm gonna go subscribe to that so so I can read those ones.
- 1:23:46SPEAKER_02: I know I'm I'm um I'm going to be reviewing Emily in Paris next oh no yeah that's an endeavor why are you doing this to yourself I love to be angry I feel like it's easy to take my anger and put it on things that are okay to be angry about like they're things that I can like control my anger.
- 1:24:06SPEAKER_02: Like I can channel my anger at like my current circumstances and having to isolate and the government being a complete bum fuck and just the state of the world and all of its atrocities into something that I can turn off.
- 1:24:23SPEAKER_02: Like Emily in Paris is awful and I know why it's awful and I know it ends.
- 1:24:29SPEAKER_01: Like I know it ends it may never end it's probably gonna come back.
- 1:24:37SPEAKER_01: Oh my god anyway thanks so much for coming on yeah thanks for having me that's the end of the podcast you can find me on Twitter for the username at YCove or at YanitCove on Instagram please remember to rate and review it on iTunes if you enjoyed it so I can end up making more and I'll see you next week for more movies the critic got rolled
