- 0:03Speaker 1: Hike and everybody. I'm Dan Horde and this is the
- 0:05Speaker 1: Bengals Booth podcast, the Hurting for Certain edition as the
- 0:10Speaker 1: injury ravaged Bengals followed to five and six with a
- 0:13Speaker 1: thirty five to twenty laws at home to the Cleveland Browns.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Coming up, you'll hear radio replays, locker room interviews, and
- 0:20Speaker 1: Dave Lapplem will join me for postgame analysis. Plus, in
- 0:24Speaker 1: this week's fun Facts interview, you'll get to know offensive
- 0:27Speaker 1: lineman Cordy Glenn, who unfortunately wound up inactive this week
- 0:32Speaker 1: with a bad back. Join the club. All of that
- 0:36Speaker 1: is straight ahead, but first, here's a quick reminder that
- 0:38Speaker 1: you can have the latest edition of this podcast delivered
- 0:41Speaker 1: right to your phone, tablet, or computer by subscribing on iTunes, Stitcher,
- 0:47Speaker 1: or pod Bean. It's the greatest invention since the library.
- 0:53Speaker 1: I walked into my neighborhood branch of the public library
- 0:55Speaker 1: this weekend with my twelve year old son and said
- 0:58Speaker 1: to him, how cool is it that there's a place
- 1:01Speaker 1: where we can borrow any book, DVD or magazine that
- 1:04Speaker 1: they have for free? His response, da Dad, Like I said,
- 1:11Speaker 1: he's twelve. That's an increasingly common response now let's get
- 1:15Speaker 1: to the game. Since the start of the season. Here
- 1:18Speaker 1: are some of the Bengals players who have gone on
- 1:21Speaker 1: season ending injured reserve tight ends Tyler Eifert, Tyler Croft
- 1:26Speaker 1: and Mason Shrek, defensive lineman Carl Lawson, Ryan Glasgow, Josh
- 1:31Speaker 1: Tupo and Adolphins Washington, and linebacker Preston Brown. Then there
- 1:37Speaker 1: are the guys who don't have season ending injuries but
- 1:40Speaker 1: had to miss the Cleveland game, a list that included
- 1:43Speaker 1: aj Greene, Drake Kirkpatrick, Nick Vigil, Cordy Glenn, and Josh Malone.
- 1:49Speaker 1: If those thirteen names were a blur, think of it
- 1:51Speaker 1: this way. The Bengals didn't have their best wide receiver,
- 1:55Speaker 1: their best tight end, two of their three starting linebackers,
- 1:59Speaker 1: one of their top two cornerbacks, and their starting left tackle.
- 2:03Speaker 1: To say that injuries are just an excuse is silly.
- 2:07Speaker 1: The roster has been decimated. Then there are the Browns, who,
- 2:12Speaker 1: according to interim head coach Greg Williams, are as healthy
- 2:15Speaker 1: as they have been since training camp. They looked at
- 2:19Speaker 1: on their opening drive on Sunday, marching seventy eight yards
- 2:23Speaker 1: on ten plays to score. They'll line up in an
- 2:25Speaker 1: eye formation backfield, Nick chubbed the deep back, Mayfield gives
- 2:30Speaker 1: it to him and Chub scores. The rookie quarterback Baker
- 2:33Speaker 1: Mayfield was six for six on that drive. Here's his
- 2:36Speaker 1: former Oklahoma teammate, Jordan Evans. Do you think he has
- 2:40Speaker 1: given that team a confidence they didn't have before? Yeah,
- 2:43Speaker 1: for sure. I mean, I just know that's what he
- 2:44Speaker 1: brings in any lockhoom oh. That's just the kind of
- 2:46Speaker 1: player he's always been. That's what he was at Ou
- 2:49Speaker 1: and then this is what he brought to the Cleveland
- 2:51Speaker 1: And obviously you're seeing. The Bengals answered with a decent drive,
- 2:54Speaker 1: but a fifty four yard field goal attempt by Randy
- 2:56Speaker 1: Bullock was blocked, giving the Browns great field position. Four
- 3:01Speaker 1: plays later, Cleveland was in the end zone again. Shotgun snap.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Mayfield looking scanning the field, moving to his left, throws
- 3:09Speaker 1: into the end zone, touchdown Calloway with the catch on
- 3:13Speaker 1: the back line of the end zone, and with one
- 3:15Speaker 1: thirty seven left in the first quarter, the Browns are
- 3:18Speaker 1: up by two touchdowns. Boy, I'll tell you it's a
- 3:20Speaker 1: hot knife through butter, There's no question about it. And
- 3:23Speaker 1: that hot knife continued to carve up the Bengals. As
- 3:26Speaker 1: the Browns third possession went ninety six yards, Mayfield catches
- 3:30Speaker 1: the shotgun snap short drop screen caught at the ten.
- 3:34Speaker 1: The Joku to the five goes airborne. He is carried
- 3:38Speaker 1: toward the goal line and he scores. Wow. Wow, unbelievable
- 3:43Speaker 1: effort buying Joku. He looked like he was crowdsurfing into
- 3:47Speaker 1: the end zone. Incredible. It was twenty one nothing Cleveland
- 3:51Speaker 1: here again, as Bengals linebacker Jordan Evans, that's when we
- 3:54Speaker 1: knew it was kind of ugly. Obviously we didn't lose,
- 3:58Speaker 1: no hope. He saw us coming back to his m
- 4:00Speaker 1: but yes, that's when it was a sly dang. We
- 4:02Speaker 1: got to do some right and then came in a
- 4:03Speaker 1: half Timahow makes my justustments and it came up short.
- 4:06Speaker 1: But it got worse before it got better. Third down
- 4:09Speaker 1: in three at the Cincinnati fourteen yard line, shotgun snap
- 4:12Speaker 1: blitz coming, Mayfield lobs one down the sideline. It is
- 4:18Speaker 1: a catch for a touchdown on a magnificent grab by
- 4:22Speaker 1: Nick Chubb as he pulled it off the helmet of
- 4:25Speaker 1: the defender on the play, Brandon Wilson, and fell on
- 4:29Speaker 1: his back into the end zone for the contested catching
- 4:32Speaker 1: the touchdown. Boy, what a tremendous strow. I mean, Wilson
- 4:36Speaker 1: never found the football in the first half. Baker Mayfield
- 4:39Speaker 1: through for two hundred forty five yards with three touchdowns,
- 4:43Speaker 1: no interceptions, and a passer rating of one fifty two
- 4:47Speaker 1: point five. Here's the reigning Heisman Trophy winner after the
- 4:51Speaker 1: game the first half to you kind of feel like
- 4:55Speaker 1: your days at Oklahoma where everything was clicking at all
- 4:57Speaker 1: or now a little bit, Yeah, we're everything's even to
- 5:02Speaker 1: be working. That's the way we wanted here in Cleveland.
- 5:04Speaker 1: The Bengals finally got on the scoreboard with less than
- 5:07Speaker 1: a minute to go in the half. Three receivers out
- 5:09Speaker 1: to the left for Cincinnati. Now Ross goes in motion
- 5:12Speaker 1: to the right, mixing in the backfield at Dalton's right,
- 5:15Speaker 1: Andy back to throw his pass right thought by John
- 5:18Speaker 1: Ross for a Bengals touchdown with thirty two seconds remaining
- 5:23Speaker 1: in the half, the fifth touchdown catch of the year
- 5:25Speaker 1: for Ross, twenty eight seven Browns at the break your safety,
- 5:29Speaker 1: Jesse Bates on what you have to do when it
- 5:32Speaker 1: gets ugly. I think the biggest part is just wearing
- 5:35Speaker 1: about your self control, which you can control. I'm mean,
- 5:37Speaker 1: coming together as a team. Unfortunately, it's tough to do
- 5:41Speaker 1: that when you're down twenty eight zero. But you know,
- 5:44Speaker 1: they just gotta play play by play. At least things
- 5:46Speaker 1: couldn't get any worse, right, think again. Dalton, waiting for
- 5:51Speaker 1: the shotgun snap play clock had won. The snap goes
- 5:54Speaker 1: sailing over his head. Daltons scrambling to pick it up,
- 5:57Speaker 1: and the Browns recover it inside the ten. They scoop
- 6:00Speaker 1: up the ball and it's going to be marked at
- 6:03Speaker 1: the seven yard line. Dalton injured his thumb on the play,
- 6:06Speaker 1: went to the locker room and never returned to the sideline.
- 6:09Speaker 1: According to the NFL Network, see Rappaport. X rays were
- 6:12Speaker 1: negative and Andy's thumb isn't broken. It's too soon to
- 6:16Speaker 1: say how long he'll be out. Two plays after the fumble,
- 6:20Speaker 1: Mayfield established a new career high with his fourth touchdown.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Pass second in goal from the six, Landry goes in motion, Baker.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Mayfield will drop back to throw, looking left, looks back
- 6:30Speaker 1: to the right, runs to the right, throws into the
- 6:32Speaker 1: back of the end zone a leaping catch by Darren
- 6:35Speaker 1: Fells on the back line for a Cleveland touchdown. That
- 6:39Speaker 1: made it thirty five seven. Jeff Driscoll took over at quarterback.
- 6:43Speaker 1: It actually made things interesting. Price snaps it back. Driscoll
- 6:47Speaker 1: fakes a hand off to Mix and throws it over
- 6:49Speaker 1: the middle, crossing route caught and Tyler Boyd runs into
- 6:52Speaker 1: the end zone for a Bengals touchdown, then whips the
- 6:55Speaker 1: football into the crowd after hauling in Jeff Driscoll's touchdown pass.
- 7:01Speaker 1: With a big lead, Cleveland stopped throwing the ball and
- 7:03Speaker 1: tried to run out the clock. Mayfield only attempted four
- 7:07Speaker 1: passes in the second half, and the Bengals pulled within
- 7:10Speaker 1: two scores first and goal at the two, Driscoll tries
- 7:13Speaker 1: to run a quarterback Snea Mixon shoves him from behind.
- 7:17Speaker 1: The Bengals are signaling touchdown and the officials agree a
- 7:22Speaker 1: two yard quarterback sneak for the touchdown by Jeff Driscoll,
- 7:26Speaker 1: and the Bengals have pulled within two touchdowns with seven
- 7:29Speaker 1: fifty seven to go. Driscoll went seventeen for twenty nine
- 7:33Speaker 1: for one hundred and fifty five yards, one touchdown and
- 7:36Speaker 1: a passer rating of eighty four point seven. We scored
- 7:39Speaker 1: some points there, and you know, got some momentum gone,
- 7:42Speaker 1: and you know, I think everybody in our sideline thought
- 7:44Speaker 1: that we were going to get it done. The Bengals
- 7:45Speaker 1: had two more chances. They drove to the Cleveland twelve
- 7:49Speaker 1: yard line before a false start turned third and three
- 7:52Speaker 1: into third and eight. Two plays later, Driscoll threw an
- 7:55Speaker 1: incomplete pass to Autumn Tight on fourth down to end
- 7:59Speaker 1: the drive. Then, on the Bengals final drive, Driscoll threw
- 8:02Speaker 1: a forty six yard pass the Tyler Boyd that would
- 8:05Speaker 1: have given the Bengals a first down at the four
- 8:07Speaker 1: yard line with a minute and a half to go,
- 8:09Speaker 1: but it was wiped out by an illegal shift penalty
- 8:12Speaker 1: that basically ended the threat. Here's Driscoll. We just came
- 8:16Speaker 1: up short, and um, you know that was unfortunate there
- 8:19Speaker 1: at the end, the way that I finished, but you
- 8:22Speaker 1: know it was it was It was good to give
- 8:25Speaker 1: our team a chance when when I came in there,
- 8:28Speaker 1: and uh, obviously got a lot of things to clean up,
- 8:30Speaker 1: and you know that that'll come come down the road,
- 8:34Speaker 1: but you know, I'm just happy the way that I
- 8:36Speaker 1: competed out there and gives chance. The final score thirty
- 8:38Speaker 1: five to twenty to end two significant losing streaks for
- 8:42Speaker 1: the Browns, a seven game head to head losing streak
- 8:45Speaker 1: against the Bengals and a twenty five game road losing streak,
- 8:49Speaker 1: allowing Cleveland to avoid tying the Detroit Lions all time
- 8:54Speaker 1: NFL record. The Bengals, on the other hand, have dropped
- 8:57Speaker 1: three straight and five out of six after a four
- 9:00Speaker 1: and one start. Here are Tyler Boyd and Jesse Bates
- 9:04Speaker 1: and where they go from here? Hate losing, you know,
- 9:06Speaker 1: I'm very competitive guy, and uh, coming back in after
- 9:10Speaker 1: a game like that, you know, I'm hurt about, you know,
- 9:12Speaker 1: But in theday, I'm gonna continue to play. I'm never
- 9:15Speaker 1: gonna stop play. I'm gonna give it all, no matter
- 9:17Speaker 1: what the score Births say, and I'm gonna just just
- 9:20Speaker 1: continue to try to do whatever I can to to
- 9:22Speaker 1: make place. Do you guys see the talent that we
- 9:24Speaker 1: have in this room, and you know the injuries that
- 9:26Speaker 1: we have. Hopefully we can get those guys back and
- 9:28Speaker 1: get them healthy. So we got five games left and
- 9:31Speaker 1: we're gonna see what we're about. The Browns have had
- 9:33Speaker 1: ten straight losing seasons and are still below five hundred
- 9:36Speaker 1: this year at four six and one, But that didn't
- 9:39Speaker 1: stop them from doing some serious trash talking this week.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Prior to the game, safety to Marius Randall said the
- 9:45Speaker 1: following quote. If they don't have a j green, they're
- 9:49Speaker 1: getting their blanks beat. He threw a log on the
- 9:53Speaker 1: fire during the game when he intercepted a pass, ran
- 9:56Speaker 1: over to the Bengals sideline and handed the football to
- 9:59Speaker 1: Hugh jack said. Then after the game, Baker Mayfield had
- 10:03Speaker 1: some interesting things to say about his former head coach.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Look like you had a very brief encounter I saw
- 10:09Speaker 1: before the game and then again after the game with
- 10:12Speaker 1: Hugh Jackson. Didn't have a chance to say anything to you.
- 10:15Speaker 1: If so, maybe what did he say and what was
- 10:16Speaker 1: that like? Um, he said, good job, good game. Yeah
- 10:23Speaker 1: that was brief. I didn't feel like talking you or
- 10:27Speaker 1: him me. I don't left Cleveland, goes down to Cincinnati.
- 10:33Speaker 1: I don't know. That's just somebody that was in our
- 10:35Speaker 1: locker room asking for us to play for him and
- 10:37Speaker 1: then goes to a different team. He played twice a year.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Everybody can have their spin on it, but that's how
- 10:42Speaker 1: I feel. So you have a little bit of a
- 10:44Speaker 1: bad taste in your mouth. I mean, it's just like
- 10:46Speaker 1: any rivalry game. That's just how it is. Now, That's
- 10:47Speaker 1: how'm gonna treat it every time we play him. But
- 10:49Speaker 1: it's it's nothing, you know, there's no hate. That's just
- 10:52Speaker 1: how it is. That's how I'm gonna treat it, and
- 10:53Speaker 1: I think that's our team's treat it too. You've always
- 10:56Speaker 1: been able to find motivation and put a chip on
- 10:58Speaker 1: your shoulder and all kinds of ways. Is that now
- 11:02Speaker 1: that it's over. Did the presence of Hugh add any
- 11:04Speaker 1: of that for this game a little bit? You know,
- 11:07Speaker 1: we have a lot of guys that have history with Cincinnati.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Orson Charles was playing like a maniac today. He kept
- 11:13Speaker 1: saying that they're the people that cut him, so, you know,
- 11:15Speaker 1: and then our QB coach Kenney's mpez was there for
- 11:18Speaker 1: fifteen years, so we have history with Cincinnati. That's what
- 11:20Speaker 1: happens when you have a division rival you play him
- 11:22Speaker 1: twice a year. There's going to do that. So yeah,
- 11:25Speaker 1: but the best thing about that is our guys handled it. Well.
- 11:28Speaker 1: That's up for debate, but this isn't. The Browns won
- 11:31Speaker 1: the game and the winner gets to do the talking.
- 11:33Speaker 1: The Bengals will see them again two days before Christmas,
- 11:37Speaker 1: maybe with a few more healthy bodies. Now time to
- 11:40Speaker 1: bring him my broadcast partner Dave Lapham for postgame analysis,
- 11:43Speaker 1: and we begin with perhaps the biggest bright spot for
- 11:46Speaker 1: the Bengals the play of backup quarterback Jeff Drescoll. He's
- 11:50Speaker 1: a pro, you know, he prepares like he's a starter,
- 11:54Speaker 1: even though he realizes that he may not get that
- 11:56Speaker 1: many snaps. But due to his preparation when because of injury,
- 12:00Speaker 1: and you hate for it to be that way, your
- 12:03Speaker 1: starter goes down to injury, you know, you have to
- 12:05Speaker 1: step up and you have to be ready, and he was.
- 12:06Speaker 1: And his team responded because they knew he was ready
- 12:08Speaker 1: once they saw him making some of the throws he
- 12:10Speaker 1: made and doing what he was doing and competing as
- 12:12Speaker 1: hard as he was competing. They all did the same thing.
- 12:15Speaker 1: He lifted the boat, you know, because it would have
- 12:18Speaker 1: been easy for Abay to get their chin on their
- 12:19Speaker 1: chest when Andy went down with the thumb injury. But man,
- 12:22Speaker 1: he lifted him. He lifted him. I heed he led
- 12:24Speaker 1: a comeback, which is significant. Thirteen play drive. I mean,
- 12:29Speaker 1: he was doing a great job of keeping the defense
- 12:31Speaker 1: off the field that was struggling. The reason their numbers.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Was so much better in the second half. Is you
- 12:35Speaker 1: know they weren't on the on the field. I mean
- 12:37Speaker 1: Cleveland ran forty snaps in the first half. They went
- 12:40Speaker 1: on the field for forty snaps in the second half.
- 12:42Speaker 1: I mean Driscoll took him on multiple you know, long
- 12:45Speaker 1: extended drives and yeah, I mean got an admire a
- 12:48Speaker 1: guy like him, and he's got skills. Dan, he can
- 12:50Speaker 1: really throw it. He was accurate with his feet and strength.
- 12:55Speaker 1: He can extend and create plays and you know, design
- 12:57Speaker 1: quarterback runs. He can do. He can do a lot
- 12:59Speaker 1: of things for you. So you know, now they get
- 13:02Speaker 1: some tape on him and it'll be a little bit different.
- 13:03Speaker 1: But he had to just execute the game plan. He
- 13:06Speaker 1: didn't run much of when Andy Dalton was getting ready
- 13:08Speaker 1: for the Cleveland Brown. So I took my cap to
- 13:10Speaker 1: the guy because it's easy to you know, talk about,
- 13:13Speaker 1: oh yeah, i'm working, I'm preparing, I'm getting ready in
- 13:15Speaker 1: case they have to play. He did it, you know,
- 13:17Speaker 1: in tough circumstances when they were getting they were getting smoked.
- 13:21Speaker 1: He came in and faced the music and brought him
- 13:24Speaker 1: back some Right now, Lap, it feels like the nightmare
- 13:28Speaker 1: that you can't wake up from the blowout Laws to
- 13:31Speaker 1: Kansas City the Saints. Now this game that turned out
- 13:34Speaker 1: to be fairly closed but was twenty eight nothing at
- 13:36Speaker 1: one point in the second quarter. Yeah, it's it's really
- 13:40Speaker 1: it's not just losing games, it's how you know you're
- 13:42Speaker 1: losing games in this one in five stretch. That is
- 13:45Speaker 1: the most disturbing and disappointing to you know, fans and players,
- 13:48Speaker 1: obviously in coaches. But there's nothing you can do about
- 13:52Speaker 1: it except you know, do everything you can to be
- 13:55Speaker 1: positive and try to turn it around. I mean, if
- 13:57Speaker 1: you're dwell on negativity, it's just going to take it
- 13:59Speaker 1: down the ativity cesspool. And that's the easier said than done,
- 14:02Speaker 1: because all there's going to be in the outside is negativity,
- 14:06Speaker 1: and you know, you just have to really evaluate yourself.
- 14:09Speaker 1: And it is Dan, It's I've never seen I've seen injuries,
- 14:13Speaker 1: but I've never seen a team that has suffered more injuries,
- 14:17Speaker 1: multiple injuries at multiple positions. I mean, you can survive
- 14:20Speaker 1: an injury at positions two, three, four or whatever, but
- 14:24Speaker 1: multiple injuries to multiple positions. I mean one of the
- 14:27Speaker 1: positions to head and suffered an injuries quarterback that's not anymore,
- 14:31Speaker 1: Andy Dalton. You know, we don't know the extent of
- 14:33Speaker 1: that thumb injuries we speak right now, but man, it
- 14:36Speaker 1: could be extensive. I mean it could be the end
- 14:37Speaker 1: of the season potentially if you broke it. So, I
- 14:41Speaker 1: mean the quarterback position, running backs have you know, miss games.
- 14:44Speaker 1: I mean there's there's not offensive line has has had
- 14:48Speaker 1: you know, minor injury. You know, Billy Price missed a
- 14:50Speaker 1: lot of games. But I mean when you only have
- 14:52Speaker 1: like four guys in a position group and three of
- 14:54Speaker 1: them an injury reserve, like the tight ends, and you've
- 14:57Speaker 1: been hit as hard as the linebackers has been hit,
- 14:58Speaker 1: and your sign you know, three defensive linemen basically off
- 15:02Speaker 1: the street and practice squads so you can practice. I
- 15:04Speaker 1: mean you can't even give a good look. It's not
- 15:07Speaker 1: just during the games. All these injuries. The trickle down
- 15:09Speaker 1: effect is as you're prepared during the week, you don't
- 15:11Speaker 1: have enough bodies to prepare properly. So you know, it all,
- 15:15Speaker 1: it all causes issues. And you know, people can say excuses,
- 15:19Speaker 1: and yeah, you're right, I mean you can't make excuses,
- 15:21Speaker 1: but man, these are hard, cold facts of life in
- 15:24Speaker 1: the National Football League and the Bengals run, you know,
- 15:26Speaker 1: an injury hecks like I've never seen Baker Mayfield through
- 15:29Speaker 1: four touchdown passes for the first time in his NFL career.
- 15:32Speaker 1: He's got two or more in five consecutive games. He
- 15:35Speaker 1: only threw four passes in the second half. Otherwise he
- 15:38Speaker 1: could have had monster statistics in this game. I mean
- 15:42Speaker 1: his six quarter quarterback rating. The Atlanta Falcon game, he
- 15:48Speaker 1: was one fifty one point three. In the first half
- 15:50Speaker 1: of this game, he was on one hundred and fifty, So,
- 15:53Speaker 1: I mean, you know, six quarters of play at the
- 15:55Speaker 1: quarterback position by rookie to have a quarterback rating of
- 15:59Speaker 1: over one hundred and fIF is extraordinary, It really is.
- 16:02Speaker 1: I mean, but there were a lot of wide open
- 16:06Speaker 1: vacations or vacated areas in the in the Bengal secretary,
- 16:10Speaker 1: I mean, it was linebacker level, deep level. There were
- 16:16Speaker 1: things for him to take advantage of, and he did. Yeah,
- 16:19Speaker 1: he's he's a smart football player. He gets the ball
- 16:22Speaker 1: out of his hand quickly, he throws it straight, he
- 16:25Speaker 1: puts some velocity on it. He's gonna be around for
- 16:28Speaker 1: a long time. Cincinnati Bengals are looking at a Cleveland
- 16:32Speaker 1: Brown team that's ascending because of the play of the quarterback.
- 16:35Speaker 1: When you have a quarterback like that that can play
- 16:37Speaker 1: at that level in this league, you know you have
- 16:39Speaker 1: a chance. And they have a lot of other players,
- 16:41Speaker 1: and I mean, Chubb's the real deal. In the first half,
- 16:44Speaker 1: two of the four touchdowns that they made were incredible.
- 16:47Speaker 1: Chubb's catch was unbelievable, and Joeku made an unbelievable play
- 16:51Speaker 1: when he hurtled and then pushed forward and his team, yeah,
- 16:55Speaker 1: just pushed everything, pushed into the end zone. I mean,
- 16:58Speaker 1: that was a football team that wanted to end that
- 17:00Speaker 1: streak of losing on the road, and they did. They
- 17:04Speaker 1: The only thing I didn't like about the football game
- 17:06Speaker 1: was multiple times it turned a little bit nasty, and
- 17:11Speaker 1: Peppers and randall those guys. You know, hey, to the
- 17:16Speaker 1: victor goes to spoils. But you don't have to be
- 17:18Speaker 1: a jerk in being a victor. You know, be a
- 17:22Speaker 1: victor with class, don't be a victor with jerk. You
- 17:24Speaker 1: don't have to take be a jerk in victor. You
- 17:25Speaker 1: don't have to take you know, laps around the football
- 17:28Speaker 1: field and taunting the Bengals and taunting coaches on the sideline.
- 17:32Speaker 1: You know Randall gets his interception and gives it to
- 17:34Speaker 1: Hugh Jackson. You know, what are you supposed to do
- 17:36Speaker 1: something like that? I thought Huge showed a lot of class.
- 17:38Speaker 1: I would have fired it right back in his face mask.
- 17:40Speaker 1: But you know, I mean those kinds of things I
- 17:43Speaker 1: think are unnecessary. You know, I understand that you had
- 17:47Speaker 1: a long dry spell, but um, bottom line is show
- 17:50Speaker 1: class and to me, not gonna be very hard to
- 17:54Speaker 1: get it up in the bit to play up in
- 17:56Speaker 1: Cleveland because some of the things that some of these
- 18:00Speaker 1: guys did during the course of that football game I
- 18:01Speaker 1: thought didn't show enough class. Last thing, you've played on
- 18:05Speaker 1: teams where for whatever reason, things spiraled. Maybe it's injuries,
- 18:09Speaker 1: which is a big factor with this team, maybe it's
- 18:11Speaker 1: something else. How do you keep grinding for the rest
- 18:15Speaker 1: of the season. You have to realize you're a professional.
- 18:18Speaker 1: You know, it's your job. You're being paid to do it, um,
- 18:21Speaker 1: and you're being paid handsomely to do it, and there's
- 18:24Speaker 1: a million millions of people that would love to have
- 18:27Speaker 1: that job, and you have to look at it. It's
- 18:29Speaker 1: not a right, it's a privilege and just go out
- 18:32Speaker 1: and do the best you can. I mean, I thought, uh,
- 18:35Speaker 1: you know, Jeff Driscoll showed it. He got thrown into
- 18:38Speaker 1: the fire and in a situation where he wasn't really
- 18:41Speaker 1: expecting and stepped up and performed. And and you just can't.
- 18:47Speaker 1: You can't. You just can't succumb to the to the
- 18:51Speaker 1: all the all the negativity. You know, you have to
- 18:54Speaker 1: basically block it all out. It's going to be hard, though,
- 18:57Speaker 1: you know, because if you look yourself in the mirror,
- 18:59Speaker 1: you know, if you were involved in any of those penalties,
- 19:02Speaker 1: you know, you may cost the football team a game,
- 19:04Speaker 1: you know, and any mistakes that were made. You just
- 19:06Speaker 1: basically have to take care of your own business, you know. Rally,
- 19:09Speaker 1: your teammates. Try to be a positive impact, and your
- 19:12Speaker 1: teammates make sure you're not a negative impact. Don't accelerate
- 19:16Speaker 1: or continue the spiral downward. Try to be don't be
- 19:19Speaker 1: a reason for the spiral downward. Be a reason for
- 19:22Speaker 1: the turnaround and bringing it back up, you know. And
- 19:25Speaker 1: that's what that's what real pros have made out of.
- 19:27Speaker 1: That's what true pros have made out of. And you
- 19:29Speaker 1: know people are gonna say, oh, injuries, man, everybody has injuries.
- 19:32Speaker 1: That's very true. But twelve guys an injury, reserve, multiple
- 19:36Speaker 1: guys injured. You know this week, in practice, this game.
- 19:40Speaker 1: It's a reason. It's a fact. I mean, you can't
- 19:42Speaker 1: run and hide from facts, but it is. You know,
- 19:45Speaker 1: it's You can say it's an excuse all you want,
- 19:48Speaker 1: but they don't have near the football team. When there
- 19:51Speaker 1: were four and one, the team that they were running
- 19:53Speaker 1: out in that football field is not the team that
- 19:55Speaker 1: they're running out there now in this one in five stretch.
- 19:59Speaker 1: But everybody's got a roster spot for a reason. You're
- 20:01Speaker 1: a professional football player. Suck it up. Players do what
- 20:05Speaker 1: the coaches say. Coaches put together game plans. Players play coaches, coach,
- 20:09Speaker 1: do your job turning around thanks. Lap Up next a
- 20:12Speaker 1: home game against the five and six Denver Broncos, who
- 20:15Speaker 1: ended the Steelers six game winning streak this week after
- 20:18Speaker 1: ending the Chargers six game winning streak last week. Now
- 20:22Speaker 1: time for this week's fun facts segment, where you get
- 20:25Speaker 1: to know the person under the pads, in this case,
- 20:29Speaker 1: the biggest man on the current roster at six six,
- 20:32Speaker 1: three hundred forty five pounds. Time for some fun facts
- 20:36Speaker 1: at Bengals left tackle Corty Glenn from river Dale Georgia,
- 20:40Speaker 1: not too far from the Atlanta airport from what I understand.
- 20:42Speaker 1: Tell me a little bit about Riverdale. I mean that's
- 20:45Speaker 1: where I'm from. It's about fifteen minutes from an airport.
- 20:48Speaker 1: Grew up there, I mean that's where we're It all
- 20:52Speaker 1: started for me. I guess what kind of stuff were
- 20:54Speaker 1: you into as a kid. Oh, I was always into
- 20:57Speaker 1: sports in a neighborhoods uh y mca AAU. Just playing sports,
- 21:04Speaker 1: hanging out my friends, regular kids. Though. Your dad, Cordy Senior,
- 21:09Speaker 1: was a big time college basketball player and All Conference
- 21:12Speaker 1: college basketball player Louisiana Lafayette. What has he told you
- 21:15Speaker 1: about his hoops career? Uh? Well, I was younger, he
- 21:18Speaker 1: used his no do the whole you can't beat me.
- 21:21Speaker 1: Uh but uh now he's on me. He had a
- 21:25Speaker 1: good career. Man, It's really talented. I mean that's probably
- 21:28Speaker 1: where I get some of my athleticism from him. And
- 21:31Speaker 1: my mom's pretty athletic too, who was a good basketball player.
- 21:35Speaker 1: So I started playing basketball, uh first, and then I
- 21:39Speaker 1: later started playing football after that. Basketball is like my
- 21:42Speaker 1: first real sport. I read that he really wanted you
- 21:46Speaker 1: to play basketball to help your footwork for football is
- 21:49Speaker 1: that true. I guess so I don't know. I played basketball,
- 21:52Speaker 1: played soccer, and I play all of them. So good footwork, um,
- 21:57Speaker 1: good footwork sports. I guess you play aid soccer. A long, long,
- 22:01Speaker 1: long time ago, Clint Clint Bowling is looking over and
- 22:06Speaker 1: saying you were the goalie? Were you, in fact the goalie?
- 22:08Speaker 1: I was a four man. I was skilled athletic moving
- 22:11Speaker 1: squil We're doing fun facts with Cordy Glenn. Were you
- 22:16Speaker 1: always the big kid in class? Yeah? Definitely, definitely always
- 22:19Speaker 1: been a big kid. One of those guys who are
- 22:22Speaker 1: like the parents from the opposing team would say, hey,
- 22:25Speaker 1: I want to see his birth certificate, or he can't
- 22:27Speaker 1: be as young as my kid, all right, Yeah, definitely
- 22:30Speaker 1: just playing rolling up playing basketball. It always is like that.
- 22:33Speaker 1: It's always to be towering over woman. I'd be watered
- 22:35Speaker 1: in him too. You went from Riverdale to the University
- 22:38Speaker 1: of Georgia. Was that a slam dunk decision for you
- 22:41Speaker 1: being at Georgia kid or where? Did you seriously consider
- 22:43Speaker 1: some other schools? Yeah? I like Georgia. Um, I was
- 22:47Speaker 1: kind of um Jordan, Alabama and man, I just took
- 22:51Speaker 1: a visit to Georgia. I don't know, just felt like
- 22:53Speaker 1: homes I just made a decision like right then and
- 22:55Speaker 1: there just felt like kind of connected with everybody just
- 22:59Speaker 1: naturally and it was organic. So the best decision from
- 23:02Speaker 1: a lot of bulldogs in this Bengals locker room. Did
- 23:05Speaker 1: you room with A. J. Green at George J for
- 23:08Speaker 1: We're with AJ for a little bit? Yeah, describe what
- 23:11Speaker 1: that was like. It was cool man, were with some
- 23:14Speaker 1: young freshman whatever. So it wasn't too long. I mean
- 23:17Speaker 1: we had some good times too, quiet guys, so it
- 23:20Speaker 1: wasn't it wasn't too much talking of going on. We're
- 23:23Speaker 1: doing fun facts with Cordy Glenn from Georgia. It was
- 23:26Speaker 1: onto the NFL as a second round draft pick by
- 23:29Speaker 1: the Buffalo Bills. You were widely projected to go in
- 23:32Speaker 1: the first round. It didn't work out that way. How
- 23:35Speaker 1: tough was that first night for you? I think it
- 23:37Speaker 1: was tough. I mean, but I think a few of
- 23:39Speaker 1: me also just you know, especially to do something that
- 23:42Speaker 1: they're not doing it and uh, just being disappointed. I mean,
- 23:46Speaker 1: I think that's that was a great motivation for me
- 23:49Speaker 1: to just like you know, saying coming to the NFL
- 23:51Speaker 1: with a certain anger and a certain light Instra drive.
- 23:55Speaker 1: You already have a drive to see how you proved.
- 23:57Speaker 1: You proved yourself that you can be in the NFL,
- 23:58Speaker 1: but didn't have something on the top of that that
- 24:01Speaker 1: was that was good for them, and I think they
- 24:02Speaker 1: helped me out a lot. So I'm from the Buffalo area.
- 24:05Speaker 1: You worked there and lived there for six years. Weather's brutal.
- 24:09Speaker 1: How did you cope with that? Being at Georgia kid,
- 24:12Speaker 1: I think I think it was a lot like initially
- 24:15Speaker 1: when I first got there, like just being in the
- 24:17Speaker 1: South all the time, and just like, oh, I'm it's
- 24:20Speaker 1: like snow everywhere. All you see a snow. But then
- 24:23Speaker 1: once I when I was once I was there later
- 24:25Speaker 1: in my career, it's kind of it was cool. I
- 24:27Speaker 1: was all kind of get more used to that than
- 24:29Speaker 1: like being in Georgia. It's kind of crazy to shovel.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Did you get a snowplow? Did you hire somebody? I
- 24:37Speaker 1: used to shovel and then uh, I guess I got
- 24:39Speaker 1: a little spoiled and I hired somebody a snowplow my
- 24:42Speaker 1: driveway area other day. There's nothing wrong with that in Buffalo,
- 24:46Speaker 1: trust me. How about chicken wings? Did you develop an
- 24:48Speaker 1: affinity for true Buffalo chicken wings. Oh yeah, definitely. Um
- 24:53Speaker 1: like dust Ankle Bar they have, they have some of
- 24:55Speaker 1: the best wings by far. I think Ankle Bar is
- 24:57Speaker 1: like famous wings spot, that's where they're supposedly in. Yeah,
- 25:01Speaker 1: but I know, like a lot of guys lately in
- 25:03Speaker 1: Buffalo went the Doves. It's like the new spot, kind
- 25:06Speaker 1: of like new flavor. That's where a real Buffalonian goes,
- 25:09Speaker 1: as opposed to the anchor bar where the tourists go.
- 25:11Speaker 1: Absolutely so, Cordy got traded to the Bengals in March.
- 25:15Speaker 1: Did that come as a shock because here there really
- 25:18Speaker 1: hadn't been a lot of rumors that that might happen. Yeah,
- 25:21Speaker 1: I don't know how to explain it. It was a shock.
- 25:23Speaker 1: I mean, it's just a lot going on when it
- 25:24Speaker 1: kind of when it hits you initially. But will say
- 25:29Speaker 1: I was happy. I was welcome with open arms from
- 25:31Speaker 1: day one here and I really appreciate that. Just, you know,
- 25:34Speaker 1: just feeling one is It's definitely like as a player
- 25:37Speaker 1: or something you always want is to feel one in
- 25:39Speaker 1: and feel like you belong somewhere. A few more fun
- 25:42Speaker 1: facts for Cordy Gladden, who is the funniest coach you've
- 25:45Speaker 1: ever played for? And what made him so funny? Head
- 25:48Speaker 1: coach of old line coach? Either one funniest coach. Oh,
- 25:51Speaker 1: it has to be rich Ryan. It has to be
- 25:54Speaker 1: rich Ryan, definitely. You want to know why? Yeah, I
- 25:57Speaker 1: don't want to see why. I don't want to say
- 25:58Speaker 1: white Cat May the radio. Fair enough? All right? You
- 26:02Speaker 1: have a connection to basketball, start Dwight Howard. Correct. I
- 26:06Speaker 1: met him like a long, long, long long time ago,
- 26:10Speaker 1: Like I was like fifteen or sixteen. Yeah, did you
- 26:14Speaker 1: have any inkling that? Jeez, this giant guy is going
- 26:16Speaker 1: to be a multi millionaire some day. No idea was
- 26:19Speaker 1: telling me about it, but I just was like just
- 26:21Speaker 1: being a kid, like yeah, okay, whatever, But no, it
- 26:24Speaker 1: was cool to meet him, especially before he was famous
- 26:26Speaker 1: and stuff like that. What do you like to splurge on? H?
- 26:31Speaker 1: What I like to splurge on? I don't know if
- 26:33Speaker 1: I have something I just love a splurge. One might
- 26:37Speaker 1: like watching movies. I like to just do normal everyday things,
- 26:40Speaker 1: really go on walks, stuff like that. Do you have
- 26:44Speaker 1: any talents that most people don't know about? Signing autographs
- 26:49Speaker 1: while doing interviews is actually one that's happening, right, now
- 26:52Speaker 1: I'm good at being quiet. That is quite a skill.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Doesn't come into handy for people in my profession. All right,
- 26:59Speaker 1: Final one, I saw an old video where you said
- 27:02Speaker 1: you loved the nineteen ninety eight Atlanta Falcons, a team
- 27:05Speaker 1: that went to the Super Bowl lost to John Elway's Broncos.
- 27:09Speaker 1: I was there for that game. Actually you were nine
- 27:12Speaker 1: years old. How devastating was it when your beloved Falcons
- 27:16Speaker 1: lost in the Super Bowl. I don't know, Well, I
- 27:19Speaker 1: think what was a quarterback? Chandler? Chris Chandler, Chris Chandler.
- 27:23Speaker 1: I don't know if I was ever just like a
- 27:25Speaker 1: that hard by Falcons fan. I was kind of more
- 27:28Speaker 1: of a Michael Big fan. Well, I mean I remember,
- 27:30Speaker 1: I think I remember the game. I don't know if
- 27:32Speaker 1: I was. I don't know. I probably probably do hate it,
- 27:34Speaker 1: don't I can't even remember. Seemed like so long ago.
- 27:38Speaker 1: All Right, I appreciate the time, best of like the
- 27:40Speaker 1: rest of the year thing. And that's going to do
- 27:42Speaker 1: it for this episode of the podcast. If you haven't
