- 0:00Hi everybody and welcome back to the Elon Musk Podcast podcast
- 0:03where we discuss the critical crossroads this Shaped, SpaceX,
- 0:07Tesla X, Boring Company, and Neuralink.
- 0:11I'm your host, Will Walden. Today's episode focuses on a
- 0:14significant development in the tech industry.
- 0:16Jack Dorsey, CEO, Block, Inc, has implemented major changes to
- 0:21the company's performance management system and appointed
- 0:23a new Chief Technology Officer. Now this comes alongside notable
- 0:28reduction in the company's workforce.
- 0:30The reason why we're covering Jack Dorsey is because of Blue
- 0:34Sky, one of Jack's companies and it's a competitorofx.com.
- 0:39In a recent internal memo, Dorsey outlined his vision for
- 0:43instilling a culture of excellence within Block.
- 0:46This vision includes the elimination of traditional
- 0:49annual performance reviews and performance improvement plans or
- 0:53PIPS. And these changes are part of
- 0:56Dorsey's broader strategy for restructuring his company, which
- 0:59also involves reducing the workforce by 10% to a total
- 1:03headcount of 12,000 people. Now Jack Dorsey, who Co founded
- 1:08Block, formerly Square and previously founded Twitter,
- 1:12critiqued the company's former methods for evaluating employee
- 1:16performance. In his communication to staff,
- 1:18he announced the removal of Performance improvement plans,
- 1:21or Pi PS, which were traditionally used to provide
- 1:24employees with feedback on their shortcomings and ways to
- 1:27improve. Usually when an employee gets
- 1:30APIP, it means they're probably not going to be around very much
- 1:33longer, and Dorsey's new strategy emphasizes ongoing
- 1:36performance evaluation rather than relying on delayed feedback
- 1:40mechanisms inherent in PIPS. Now, Dorsey's memo underscored
- 1:44the need for continuous performance evaluation.
- 1:47He expressed dissatisfaction with the existing performance
- 1:50management practices, noting that they do not effectively
- 1:54promote excellence. The new system will use
- 1:56milestones such as product launches as opportunities for
- 1:59providing immediate and personalized feedback rather
- 2:02than waiting for scheduled review cycles.
- 2:05And under the new system, employees failing to meet
- 2:07expectations can face immediate dismissal.
- 2:11This approach is intended to prevent underperformance and
- 2:14ensure that only high performing employees remain with the
- 2:17company. Dorsey's approach represents A
- 2:20departure from traditional corporate performance management
- 2:23practices moving towards a more dynamic and immediate evaluation
- 2:27process. In addition to these performance
- 2:30management changes, Dorsey announced the appointment of a
- 2:32new Chief Technology Officer. Donji Prasanna, a long standing
- 2:37employee and the Chief scientists at Block has been
- 2:39appointed to this role. Now this move signifies A
- 2:43strategic shift in the company's technological direction and an
- 2:46emphasis on enhancing shared technology platforms across
- 2:49various business units. Block, known for its square
- 2:53register POS system, has seen substantial growth, particularly
- 2:56in sectors like Bitcoin transactions.
- 2:59However, Dorsey has observed that the rapid increase in
- 3:02employee numbers has not been commensurate with the company's
- 3:06growth and performance, and this disparity has led to the
- 3:09decision to scale back the workforce and include more
- 3:12stringent performance evaluation criteria.
- 3:15Starting next year, Block will implement a new performance
- 3:18rating system. Employees will be categorized as
- 3:22exceeds, meets or falls below expectations.
- 3:26This system is designed to create clear, accountable
- 3:29conversations about performance, ensuring that all employees are
- 3:32aware of where they stand and what is expected of them in a
- 3:35timely manner. Now, the changes at Block come
- 3:38at a time when the company is performing well in the market.
- 3:40Notably, Block has seen a significant increase in Bitcoin
- 3:43revenue and a corresponding surge in its share price.
- 3:47These financial successes under score the importance of Dorsey's
- 3:50move to maintain a high performance, efficient workforce
- 3:55and now moving on to SpaceX. Elon Musk recently shared an
- 3:59image on Friday highlighting the last batch of four version 1
- 4:02starships at the company's Starbase facility.
- 4:05The photo reveals the final V1 starships making is a
- 4:09culmination of this version's development.
- 4:11SpaceX introduced the first Version 1 Starship prototype in
- 4:142020, specifically crafted for orbital test flights, and while
- 4:18several prototypes have been built, the version one series
- 4:21represents a significant step in the Starship's evolution.
- 4:24Musk and a recent update on X indicated that the forthcoming
- 4:28Starship models will be equipped with advanced Raptor engines.
- 4:31These next Gen. engines are expected to outperform current
- 4:34models in several aspects. In recent post on X, Musk
- 4:38expressed his enthusiasm for the new Raptor engines, noting their
- 4:41robustness and the elimination of the need for a heat shield.
- 4:45He mentioned that these engines would offer increased thrust and
- 4:49incorporate multiple enhancements, and the role of
- 4:51Spacex's Starship is crucial in Musk's ambitious plans for space
- 4:56exploration, including manned missions to the Moon and to
- 4:58Mars. Now, Starship's second launch
- 5:00occurred on Saturday of last week, successfully completing
- 5:03its stage separation. However, an explosion followed,
- 5:07affecting the booster and the spacecraft lost communication
- 5:10with the SpaceX team after ascending to about 150
- 5:13kilometers in space past the carbon line.
- 5:17Now the test launch aiming for a complete round trip flight to
- 5:20the Pacific Ocean splashdown unfortunately did not achieve
- 5:23its final objective, but overall it was a success.
