- 0:00Hey everyone, and welcome back to Travel Tip Tuesday with the Travel Mug Podcast.
- 0:05This is Jenn, and I am joined by my partner in podcasting.
- 0:10Meggan.
- 0:11Meggan, I have a question for you today.
- 0:14Would you take an extreme day trip, meaning that you fly somewhere early in the morning and take a late flight back home that very same day, would you do this?
- 0:27So I have seen one guy do this a few times on, the Clock app.
- 0:33, He's an Australian fellow, I think living in England.
- 0:36And I personally have literally never considered this before in my entire life because Canada, like the size of Canada, probably just like blanked that out from my mind because why would I do that?
- 0:48But I mean.
- 0:50For the right circumstances and reasons, I probably would.
- 0:54And if I were in Europe, I'm sure I would, and I know of course I could go from like province to province in Canada, but that sounds boring.
- 1:01So maybe country to country.
- 1:03If I lived in Europe, maybe.
- 1:06Interesting.
- 1:06Yes.
- 1:07I have also seen it on the Clock app and the algorithms have brought this to me of course, 'cause I watched one and.
- 1:14Now I see a bunch.
- 1:15But the one guy I've actually seen is, , he's traveling from New York, like city to um, other countries.
- 1:24So obviously he's got a lot of flight options from New York City.
- 1:27So I definitely think this trend is not brand new, but it definitely is gaining speed or at least notoriety.
- 1:37I think there was a a Wall Street Journal article about it recently, so I think it's just more that we're hearing about it now.
- 1:44Sure.
- 1:45like I said, it does involve flying somewhere like first flight out at the crack of dawn or before the crack of dawn and then flying home that night.
- 1:55And there are a couple of like pros that I thought of.
- 2:00So one, you don't have to pay for a hotel.
- 2:02So that's a significant savings.
- 2:05You don't have to use any vacation time if you're going on a day that you're not working anyway.
- 2:11And then I thought it could be fun as trying out solo travel, like you're only gone for the day, so if you hate it, then whatever.
- 2:20It's just one day.
- 2:22You are dipping your little toe in.
- 2:23That's a great idea.
- 2:24That's a good way to think about it.
- 2:25Yeah.
- 2:26But it also has some cons.
- 2:28So obviously like flight delays happen, like.
- 2:33You have to depart at two.
- 2:34And your return flight is at six?
- 2:37Yeah, so like obviously like delays could affect your trip to the point where you don't Yeah.
- 2:42even get to go.
- 2:43Yeah.
- 2:44And then, I mean, there's the environmental impact of traveling for one day.
- 2:48I mean, I've seen people make the argument like, planes are going that way anyway, but like.
- 2:54You know, we're all adding to the problem Yeah.
- 2:57here.
- 2:58And then, I mean, the obvious con is like you're only there for really like hours and so you can only really do a few things.
- 3:06It is, like you said, dipping your toe in the destination.
- 3:11So I think if I were going to do it, I would definitely book a short, nonstop flight away.
- 3:18Like that would have to be how it is and from where we You gonna go to Moncton?
- 3:22Where you going?
- 3:25Maybe like.
- 3:27Toronto Toronto, the problem is, is we don't really have a lot of flights that are like, you could fly out early morning and back in the same day.
- 3:35So that's a problem.
- 3:35But anyway, if you live somewhere you can do this.
- 3:39, I would definitely choose a destination where the airport isn't too far from the city.
- 3:43You don't wanna land somewhere and then have like a two hour journey into the city or something.
- 3:49I will say, even though I haven't done an extreme day trip, that even short trips.
- 3:53Can be really fun.
- 3:55We have done two nights in Boston and we have another two night trip coming up to Toronto later this year.
- 4:03And you can definitely pack in a lot Oh yeah.
- 4:05in a short amount of time.
- 4:07And it, a lot of the things people say is like, you're not worried about like going for a rest because you're there to like power through and do as much as you can in a short amount of time, and then you're gonna get home and sleep in your own bed.
- 4:21And likely there's no jet lag.
- 4:23So like those factors aren't there as heavily.
- 4:27Yeah, so this definitely seems like you said more popular in the uk.
- 4:31There's even a website called Extreme day trips.com that is for people who are based in the UK and they have ready-made itineraries for some cities like Malaga, Spain, Dublin, Lisbon, Copenhagen, lots more.
- 4:44So if that's something you're considering, I would check them out, uh, 'cause they have done a lot of the work for you.
- 4:51I love that.
- 4:52So anyway, that's all we have for this week's episode.
