- 0:15Speaker 2: Live studios in New York Idaho and Michigan this This.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Is TrekCast, the galaxy's most unpredictable Star Trek podcast. Today
- 0:33Speaker 1: on the show, we're going to talk about Season 4,
- 0:37Speaker 1: Episode 9 of Stranger Worlds, once on a time. Plus,
- 0:44Speaker 1: we've got Star Trek news and your listener feedback. I
- 0:48Speaker 1: am Scott Bauters with Daniel Reyes. And now, convinced more
- 0:53Speaker 1: than ever of the Flat Earth Theory... That's right. It's
- 0:57Speaker 1: Dan Lombardo.
- 1:01Speaker 3: The flat earth. That's true. I did think of that.
- 1:03Speaker 1: I thought about that, too.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Are they going to throw some shade at those lunatics?
- 1:09Speaker 1: I thought for sure they were going to.
- 1:10Speaker 4: I was hoping for lizard people, but you know.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Yeah, either way.
- 1:16Speaker 4: If we're going to have the flat earth, let's go
- 1:17Speaker 4: all the way.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Yeah, right.
- 1:19Speaker 4: Let's do it all.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Yep.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Robot birds.
- 1:21Speaker 5: What?
- 1:22Speaker 4: You say that like that's fake.
- 1:26Speaker 3: We know that the birds aren't real.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Oh, don't really laugh. I've been getting over a cold, so. Oh, no.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Speaking of cold, hoodie weather in New York.
- 1:36Speaker 4: Two thumbs up.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 1:38Speaker 4: We're getting there in Idaho. The mornings are super cold,
- 1:41Speaker 4: but by the day, it's like 80. Yes.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Yes. It's that time of year where you have to
- 1:45Speaker 3: pick out two outfits. You have to wear one to work.
- 1:49Speaker 3: You have to change at lunch.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Yep.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:52Speaker 1: That's why I dress in layers. Lots of hoodies. Lots of, yeah. Yeah.
- 1:56Speaker 1: I hate hoodies that can't unzip. I need them to
- 2:00Speaker 1: be able to come off easily.
- 2:02Speaker 4: I also need to zip.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:03Speaker 1: I wouldn't, I wouldn't wear that hoodie.
- 2:05Speaker 4: I mean, yeah, same.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Okay.
- 2:06Speaker 1: So this is yours. That's one reason, but this, right.
- 2:11Speaker 3: Um, this hoodie is one feature that I like about
- 2:14Speaker 3: specifically about this hoodie. Okay. Just like the size of
- 2:19Speaker 3: this hood.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
- 2:21Speaker 3: Right. Goes over. This is, oh my goodness. This is a,
- 2:25Speaker 3: This is Elaine on the couch watching television. Don't want
- 2:30Speaker 3: the light in my eyes hoodie. I'll pull it down
- 2:35Speaker 3: just above my eyes.
- 2:36Speaker 4: That looks like its own pocket dimension.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Yes, it is.
- 2:39Speaker 3: It really is.
- 2:41Speaker 1: It really is.
- 2:42Speaker 3: I wear this hoodie and I want to go, no, no, no.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Electricity comes out of my fingers. That's how big this
- 2:49Speaker 3: hood is.
- 2:49Speaker 4: That's awesome. That's awesome. Good morning.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Good morning. We had a garage sale this weekend. In fact,
- 2:58Speaker 1: after this, I'm going to continue the garage sale. So Friday,
- 3:02Speaker 1: the weather was perfect. Seventy, sunny, a lot of people.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Made a few strips of latinum.
- 3:10Speaker 5: Nice.
- 3:11Speaker 1: And yesterday, we had two people show up for a
- 3:14Speaker 1: grand total of $ 2. Nice.
- 3:16Speaker 6: Wow.
- 3:17Speaker 1: So we just sat out there all day, just hung out.
- 3:20Speaker 3: Were you talking stuff up? Were you like, you know,
- 3:22Speaker 3: this shirt. this shirt was worn by one of the
- 3:25Speaker 3: hosts of Trek cast.
- 3:26Speaker 1: That's right.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Star Trek podcast.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Yes.
- 3:30Speaker 3: And it was screen. It was screen used.
- 3:32Speaker 4: That's right.
- 3:33Speaker 3: So in these three episodes, I mean.
- 3:35Speaker 1: That's called Providence. Yes.
- 3:37Speaker 3: Yes.
- 3:38Speaker 4: Providence.
- 3:40Speaker 1: This piece here is a collective.
- 3:41Speaker 3: It's only going to go up in value.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Yeah. I think I did. That's exactly how my, my,
- 3:46Speaker 1: my late father, he was a, he had a Ferengi ring.
- 3:50Speaker 1: blood running through his veins. He was a wheeler dealer
- 3:53Speaker 1: type of guy, you know? And so he loved garage sales,
- 3:56Speaker 1: both putting on garage sales and going to garage sales. And,
- 4:00Speaker 1: you know, he would talk something up or give a
- 4:02Speaker 1: sob story if he was trying to buy something, you know,
- 4:05Speaker 1: like it was, it was great.
- 4:07Speaker 3: The great thing about hosting a garage sale is you
- 4:10Speaker 3: can totally like, you can totally oversell it. You can
- 4:14Speaker 3: get in there like a used car salesman and, And
- 4:17Speaker 3: if it's too much, people just assume you're being funny
- 4:20Speaker 3: because it's a yard sale.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Yeah, because nobody cares.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Whereas if you do that at a car dealership, people
- 4:25Speaker 3: get turned off and walk away.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, I put on a full production selling
- 4:29Speaker 1: like a $ 2 knick-knack on Friday.
- 4:32Speaker 3: What do I got to do to send that home
- 4:33Speaker 3: with you?
- 4:34Speaker 1: Right. That's great. I'm like, you know you can't live
- 4:37Speaker 1: without that. I mean, you're not going to walk away
- 4:39Speaker 1: from that, are you?
- 4:40Speaker 4: I don't know, man. I'm pretty convinced that Facebook Marketplace
- 4:43Speaker 4: has killed garage sales.
- 4:46Speaker 3: It hasn't.
- 4:47Speaker 4: You don't think so?
- 4:48Speaker 3: It hasn't. And I'll tell you why. I'll tell you why.
- 4:52Speaker 3: It takes a bit of work to put stuff on Marketplace.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Okay.
- 4:56Speaker 3: To run a garage sale, you pull the shit out
- 4:58Speaker 3: of your house, spread it out on the driveway. Right.
- 5:01Speaker 3: And at the end of the night, you push it
- 5:03Speaker 3: out to the end of the road and it doesn't
- 5:04Speaker 3: come back in.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Right.
- 5:06Speaker 3: So I still find great deals at yard sales because
- 5:11Speaker 3: people are... People are too lazy to take pictures and
- 5:14Speaker 3: post it and, okay, you know, I'll meet you at
- 5:16Speaker 3: the library parking lot at this time because I don't
- 5:18Speaker 3: want you to come to my house or meet me
- 5:20Speaker 3: at the police. Some people don't want to do that.
- 5:23Speaker 3: You know who doesn't want to do that? Well-to-do people.
- 5:25Speaker 4: They don't have time.
- 5:26Speaker 3: They don't have time for that. They don't have time
- 5:28Speaker 3: for that.
- 5:28Speaker 4: They don't want to make 20 bucks.
- 5:31Speaker 3: But they will sit on the driveway and sip coffee
- 5:34Speaker 3: for six hours on a nice summer day and watch
- 5:38Speaker 3: their stuff play. go out the door at bargain prices
- 5:42Speaker 3: because they don't really need the money. They're just, they
- 5:44Speaker 3: just want to hang out with the neighbors and clean
- 5:46Speaker 3: the house out.
- 5:47Speaker 1: That's the thing with us too. It's like, uh, we
- 5:50Speaker 1: probably sold $ 10, 000 worth of stuff for 200 bucks, you know?
- 5:56Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 5:57Speaker 4: That's how it is.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Yes.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Whereas my garage sales are terrible. My garage sale is
- 6:02Speaker 3: the driveway full of shit that I couldn't sell in marketplace.
- 6:05Speaker 4: Yeah. Oh, yeah, you need that He-Man sword.
- 6:10Speaker 1: We're going to have it again next weekend because it's
- 6:12Speaker 1: already out in the garage. It's already on tables. But
- 6:16Speaker 1: after that, anything that doesn't go, I'm taken straight to
- 6:19Speaker 1: the Salvation Army.
- 6:20Speaker 4: I picture Dan's garage. That's a very rare nunchuck from
- 6:23Speaker 4: a Michelangelo. That's very hard to find.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Oh, my goodness. Hard to find stuff, too. I've been
- 6:31Speaker 1: looking for... Oh, this would be a great platform to
- 6:33Speaker 1: see if anybody's got this. In 1989... I was playing
- 6:38Speaker 1: with my friend's RoboCop figure, okay? And somewhere around the
- 6:46Speaker 1: corner of Amherst and Kent, I lost the gun to it.
- 6:50Speaker 3: It's okay, because the gun looks horrendous on that figure.
- 6:53Speaker 3: I know the exact figure you're talking about.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Yeah, since then, my friend has given me crap about it.
- 6:59Speaker 1: We're still friends. His name's Mark. And so he tells
- 7:02Speaker 1: me every once in a while, you owe me a
- 7:04Speaker 1: gun from a 1989... RoboCop.
- 7:09Speaker 4: I bet you could 3D print that.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Now, that's a good idea. That's a good idea. Yeah.
- 7:16Speaker 4: I bet somebody has got the file on some free website.
- 7:20Speaker 4: You download it and just 3D.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Print the gun. For his birthday sometime or for Christmas,
- 7:24Speaker 1: I want to get that gun.
- 7:25Speaker 4: Do you have it?
- 7:28Speaker 1: I will.
- 7:29Speaker 3: Okay.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:31Speaker 4: You'll find it.
- 7:31Speaker 1: I will.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Well, I mean, I'm going to... I'm going to a
- 7:36Speaker 3: show later today.
- 7:37Speaker 4: Oh, there you go.
- 7:38Speaker 3: I've never been to it before. It's called the collector takeover. Okay.
- 7:41Speaker 3: So I'm sure there will be a bunch of stuff there.
- 7:45Speaker 3: If not, I mean, I have a network of people.
- 7:48Speaker 4: That's right.
- 7:49Speaker 3: That I deal with all the time. So, I mean,
- 7:50Speaker 3: there's a couple of Facebook groups where I could say, Hey,
- 7:53Speaker 3: I need this for my buddy. And I mean, I've
- 7:57Speaker 3: helped so many people out over the years. Probably somebody
- 7:59Speaker 3: be like, yep, I'll send it to you.
- 8:01Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Yep, I'll send it to you. I probably won't even
- 8:03Speaker 3: need to give my address because we have sent stuff
- 8:06Speaker 3: back and forth through the mail so many times. And
- 8:09Speaker 3: I may actually already have it. I have to look.
- 8:13Speaker 4: Do you need an FFL for transporting guns over state borders?
- 8:18Speaker 3: No, because it's considered a replica.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Okay.
- 8:24Speaker 4: Not an antique?
- 8:25Speaker 3: So I'm good except in the big cities.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Chicago, Detroit, I'm surprised that Daniel knows the term FFL.
- 8:35Speaker 3: I know, right?
- 8:36Speaker 4: I live in North Idaho.
- 8:37Speaker 1: What do you know?
- 8:39Speaker 3: Daniel worked for, I don't remember how long ago.
- 8:43Speaker 4: Yeah, a couple years ago, yeah.
- 8:44Speaker 3: Daniel worked for a firearms accessory manufacturer.
- 8:48Speaker 4: Yeah, oh, fun fact, they went out of business.
- 8:52Speaker 3: Did they?
- 8:52Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, that trend went out. So you now have
- 8:56Speaker 4: a rare gun holster.
- 8:58Speaker 1: I don't.
- 8:59Speaker 3: I don't.
- 8:59Speaker 1: I gave it away. Oh, did you?
- 9:01Speaker 3: Okay.
- 9:03Speaker 1: I didn't like it.
- 9:03Speaker 3: I was like, somebody will like it. Yeah, that's fine.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Whatever. Are we avoiding the main topic?
- 9:12Speaker 3: We absolutely are.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Okay.
- 9:14Speaker 3: And we're going to keep avoiding it. We'll talk about
- 9:20Speaker 3: random stuff. So when I buy lots of toys sometimes,
- 9:23Speaker 3: I'll get pieces. I'll get pieces of a toy and
- 9:26Speaker 3: I won't throw them away or trade them or whatever.
- 9:28Speaker 3: So the 1978 Mego Buck Rogers toy line, I got
- 9:36Speaker 3: the top half of this character.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Can you say how you do?
- 9:40Speaker 3: Character's name is Draco. So I've never seen the show
- 9:45Speaker 3: in 30 or 40 years, but he had no legs.
- 9:48Speaker 3: But it's the same construction as G.I. Joe figures. So
- 9:51Speaker 3: I thought, you know what, I'm going to put him
- 9:52Speaker 3: in a pair of bell bottoms. So there's shipwrecked bell bottoms. And, uh,
- 9:56Speaker 3: he looks like, he looks like he should, except for
- 9:59Speaker 3: the holster. He, looks like he should be at woodstock
- 10:02Speaker 3: or something i was gonna.
- 10:03Speaker 4: Say is he wearing like a like a belly shirt
- 10:06Speaker 4: oh no that's.
- 10:07Speaker 3: No he's just he's got like a it's like a
- 10:09Speaker 3: high belt it's like okay the light on it was
- 10:12Speaker 3: like like he's like cut off belly shirt he's got
- 10:15Speaker 3: a nice nice full man shoe oh that is nice
- 10:18Speaker 3: go in there It.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Looks like what Klingons would wear for their formal attire.
- 10:22Speaker 3: That's it. That's what it is. This is a Klingon
- 10:24Speaker 3: bar mitzvah outfit. That's what that is.
- 10:27Speaker 4: That's right. Since you're going to the toy show.
- 10:30Speaker 3: What are you looking for?
- 10:31Speaker 4: Okay. So I have this, right? It's a He-Man and
- 10:36Speaker 4: a Hot Wheel thing. Okay. Okay. It's like him in
- 10:39Speaker 4: a racer. I know they make a Batman one of these.
- 10:41Speaker 4: They're newer. They're within the last five years.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Hot Wheels. But what is it? The characters on top
- 10:47Speaker 3: of it?
- 10:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:49Speaker 4: Yeah. If you see the Batman.
- 10:51Speaker 3: Yeah. I'll let you know.
- 10:53Speaker 4: All right.
- 10:54Speaker 3: Anything else? Anything else? Show and tell? We got anything?
- 10:58Speaker 3: Got this tape measure here.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Watch. Watch.
- 11:00Speaker 4: Oh, look at that.
- 11:01Speaker 3: Look at this. Look at this. It goes back in.
- 11:05Speaker 3: It goes back in.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Maybe we'll have time at the end of the episode
- 11:07Speaker 1: to talk about another another franchise that I'm really digging
- 11:11Speaker 1: right now.
- 11:11Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 11:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:12Speaker 3: I got one of those upstairs.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:15Speaker 4: I'm digging that show, man. I'm digging that show.
- 11:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:19Speaker 1: For those of you who are listening to this podcast,
- 11:22Speaker 1: not watching it, I just showed a Green Lantern ring.
- 11:27Speaker 3: I showed a tape measure, which, fun fact, could defeat
- 11:31Speaker 3: your Green Lantern ring because it's yellow.
- 11:35Speaker 1: It's yellow. Yes, it is.
- 11:36Speaker 4: Is it yellow because it's powered by fear?
- 11:38Speaker 3: Yes, because there's nothing scarier than cutting a piece of
- 11:44Speaker 3: wood too short. That's right. I'm going to run to
- 11:46Speaker 3: Lowe's and get another one. Yep. Yep.
- 11:49Speaker 1: I know that all too well.
- 11:50Speaker 4: God damn it.
- 11:52Speaker 3: You know, they say measure twice, cut once.
- 11:54Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 11:55Speaker 3: Yeah. Measure twice, cut twice because you suck at measuring.
- 11:59Speaker 4: That's me.
- 12:00Speaker 3: That really goes. All right.
- 12:04Speaker 4: Well, should we get to the news? Yeah.
- 12:06Speaker 5: I know.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Star Trek news.
- 12:09Speaker 3: All right.
- 12:10Speaker 4: So there's actually quite a bit of Star Trek news.
- 12:13Speaker 4: In fact, our first one, Dan, you'll be happy to know,
- 12:15Speaker 4: we got to check out the Mount.
- 12:16Speaker 3: What up at the Mount?
- 12:22Speaker 4: All right. So our first news story comes to us
- 12:23Speaker 4: from the Wall Street Journal, you know, because we keep
- 12:26Speaker 4: track of what they're up to all the time. But
- 12:29Speaker 4: apparently Paramount is in advanced settlement talks with California's attorney
- 12:35Speaker 4: general to make this whole California or attorney generals between
- 12:40Speaker 4: like 11 other states or 12 other states, whatever it is.
- 12:43Speaker 4: go away, that whole lawsuit. So, yeah, the talks are
- 12:47Speaker 4: going right now. Don't have a settlement just yet, but
- 12:51Speaker 4: they are expecting a settlement soon. So, I don't know,
- 12:55Speaker 4: earlier this week there were reports that Paramount was going
- 12:58Speaker 4: to leave California. So I think that's what put the
- 13:01Speaker 4: pressure on these settlements. And so this could all be
- 13:04Speaker 4: over soon and Warner Brothers and Paramount will be merged
- 13:07Speaker 4: and you'll get Harry Potter on the Enterprise pretty soon.
- 13:11Speaker 3: So I've got.
- 13:12Speaker 1: Your Harry Potter right here.
- 13:16Speaker 3: It's funny because I remember one of the sticking points
- 13:18Speaker 3: is who's going to control CNN.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. OK.
- 13:22Speaker 3: CNN, who El Presidente just kicked out of the White House.
- 13:25Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly.
- 13:26Speaker 3: It's like we really are living in the worst timeline.
- 13:31Speaker 7: Oh, yeah.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 13:33Speaker 3: At this point. Yeah. I can't wait until this era
- 13:37Speaker 3: of politics is over.
- 13:38Speaker 4: Mm hmm.
- 13:40Speaker 3: And I'm both whether you, no matter what side of the,
- 13:42Speaker 3: it doesn't matter what side you're on.
- 13:44Speaker 4: Cause I, Oh yeah.
- 13:44Speaker 3: I'm, I'm talking about him and I'm also talking about
- 13:47Speaker 3: the off the wall, crazy reactions to him that the other,
- 13:52Speaker 3: that the other side has. I'm just tired of all
- 13:54Speaker 3: of it.
- 13:55Speaker 4: I'm so tired. All right. The next news story comes
- 13:57Speaker 4: to us from TV line.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Nice.
- 13:59Speaker 4: And speak. Yeah. Well, speaking of next. Yeah. Speaking of
- 14:08Speaker 4: criticism and puppets and puppets. Yeah. Season four EP has
- 14:18Speaker 4: heard your criticism and he says there's a method to
- 14:20Speaker 4: our mess.
- 14:21Speaker 1: So, yeah.
- 14:22Speaker 4: So Akiva Goldsman did a big interview talking about, hey,
- 14:26Speaker 4: you know, we get a producer.
- 14:28Speaker 1: OK, take me a second.
- 14:28Speaker 4: Executive producer of Strange New Worlds.
- 14:32Speaker 3: Yes.
- 14:32Speaker 4: I did a big interview talking about the less than
- 14:35Speaker 4: desirable fan fan reception of strange new world season four. Uh,
- 14:40Speaker 4: he says, we, we get it. We love those two.
- 14:43Speaker 4: He talking about classic Star Trek episodes. He goes, but
- 14:47Speaker 4: he points that, that it's in our title, in our
- 14:50Speaker 4: title and our worlds are genres. So it's strange new
- 14:55Speaker 4: genres guys. That's strange. Um, yeah. Um, yeah. So he
- 15:01Speaker 4: says we, we only get 10 episodes every year. and
- 15:04Speaker 4: they wanted to jump around in different genres. He says
- 15:06Speaker 4: they did that in the original series. Kind of, but
- 15:09Speaker 4: not to this extent. Yeah, he says, we are Star
- 15:13Speaker 4: Trek fans deeply, and we want to try to respond
- 15:17Speaker 4: to the fandom, and we really just can't please all
- 15:20Speaker 4: the people all the time.
- 15:21Speaker 3: So please none of the people, none of the time.
- 15:23Speaker 3: Got it. Just to be fair.
- 15:27Speaker 4: I was going to save this for later, but I
- 15:31Speaker 4: can just show you this now, too. There's a website
- 15:35Speaker 4: called Series Graph. And they basically bring together all of
- 15:43Speaker 4: the ratings for a show from across the internet. And
- 15:47Speaker 4: they've turned it into a graphic so you can easily
- 15:49Speaker 4: see how well a show is being received or not.
- 15:53Speaker 4: And so here's Strange New World Season 4. The latest episode,
- 15:58Speaker 4: one on at a time, is the lowest rated episode
- 16:02Speaker 4: of all time. at a 4.3. These are out of 10. Um,
- 16:08Speaker 4: and then the overall series season four is at a 6.2
- 16:12Speaker 4: out of 10 compared to past seasons, which were like 7.8
- 16:16Speaker 4: or eight, eight, uh, or 7.1. So I'd have.
- 16:20Speaker 1: To agree with that. Those numbers at the bottom.
- 16:23Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 16:24Speaker 1: 7.1, 6.2.
- 16:26Speaker 3: I mean, statistics are great, but they don't, these things
- 16:30Speaker 3: don't occur in a vacuum. And what I mean, what
- 16:32Speaker 3: I mean by that, what, what episode number is this
- 16:35Speaker 3: for the season?
- 16:36Speaker 4: Nine, nine.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Okay.
- 16:37Speaker 3: Um, if this was the first episode of the season,
- 16:41Speaker 3: it would have been fine.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:43Speaker 3: But we have had, we had eight other unenjoyable or
- 16:47Speaker 3: seven or six. However, I know there were a couple
- 16:49Speaker 3: that were in there that were okay, but you know,
- 16:52Speaker 3: it was like the fifth or sixth dud.
- 16:54Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 16:56Speaker 3: People are getting tired of it.
- 16:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:59Speaker 4: Um, well you can see in that graphic five and
- 17:01Speaker 4: less and there's, you know, five episodes, half the season.
- 17:05Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 17:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Um, yeah.
- 17:07Speaker 3: I mean, I watched this, I half watched the episode.
- 17:10Speaker 3: I watched the whole episode, but I half watched it.
- 17:12Speaker 3: I was on my phone the whole time. I just didn't,
- 17:15Speaker 3: I just didn't care. I just didn't care.
- 17:16Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 17:17Speaker 3: All right.
- 17:17Speaker 4: We'll get, we'll get to that. Cause we, we got
- 17:20Speaker 4: one more new story.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Okay.
- 17:21Speaker 4: And our last new story comes to us from, uh,
- 17:25Speaker 4: Trek movie.com. This is also, Oh no. Where did Dan go?
- 17:28Speaker 3: No, no, I'm still here. I just need a little
- 17:30Speaker 3: privacy for a minute. That's all.
- 17:31Speaker 1: Okay. Oh, God. Oh, no.
- 17:35Speaker 4: Anyways, TrekMovie.com. Also from Akiva Goldsman talking about Star Trek
- 17:40Speaker 4: Year One. And he says he does not see it happening.
- 17:45Speaker 4: So this is the big TOS kind of reboot that
- 17:50Speaker 4: people have been talking about, how the producers have been
- 17:52Speaker 4: saying they want to do. That they tell us that
- 17:55Speaker 4: we want, allegedly. And that it's just probably not going
- 18:00Speaker 4: to happen, man.
- 18:01Speaker 3: Which.
- 18:02Speaker 4: Also leads credence to Kurtzman is not going to get
- 18:06Speaker 4: a new deal or not renew his current deal. It's
- 18:09Speaker 4: not for sure yet, but all signs are pointing towards
- 18:12Speaker 4: that right now.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Can I say something? Oh yeah, go for it, man.
- 18:20Speaker 1: How often does a fan base of anything, besides just saying, hey,
- 18:24Speaker 1: I want more. I'm a big Friends fan. I want
- 18:26Speaker 1: more Friends. Or I'm a big NCIS fan. I want
- 18:29Speaker 1: more NCIS.
- 18:30Speaker 3: How often.
- 18:32Speaker 1: does a franchise not only say, I want more of something,
- 18:35Speaker 1: but the fan base gives you a clear roadmap on
- 18:42Speaker 1: how to make it happen and have the showrunners go, yeah, no,
- 18:47Speaker 1: we're not going to do that.
- 18:49Speaker 4: Star Trek Legacy.
- 18:52Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 18:53Speaker 4: I know Dan doesn't like this comparison, but the allegory
- 18:58Speaker 4: to pro wrestling and Star Trek If you follow both,
- 19:03Speaker 4: they're right there. And it's crazy. WWE for a long time.
- 19:08Speaker 1: Right now they have the same writers, I think. Right.
- 19:11Speaker 4: WWE for a long time was just kind of doing
- 19:14Speaker 4: whatever the hell they wanted. People would complain about it
- 19:16Speaker 4: on the internet. And it got so bad that this
- 19:20Speaker 4: billionaire named Tony Khan decided, well, I'm going to just
- 19:24Speaker 4: do what the fans want. And he started his own
- 19:27Speaker 4: promotion called AEW. Similarly... People complained on the Internet. They
- 19:32Speaker 4: wanted a certain thing with Star Trek. And so this
- 19:35Speaker 4: multimillionaire just said, well, I'm going to make my own
- 19:36Speaker 4: Star Trek show and created the Orville.
- 19:39Speaker 1: Right.
- 19:39Speaker 4: Then fans love the Orville. They really liked what they
- 19:42Speaker 4: were doing there. AEW, like people are loving it and
- 19:46Speaker 4: it continues to grow. It's getting bigger and bigger internationally.
- 19:51Speaker 4: and they're doing what the fans want. They're pretty responsive
- 19:55Speaker 4: to what fans want and, and they're growing like crazy.
- 19:59Speaker 4: Same with the Orville. Like they, they went from super
- 20:02Speaker 4: jokey to getting more and more serious and more and
- 20:06Speaker 4: more Star Trek like episodes. And it was great.
- 20:09Speaker 3: Yeah. You know?
- 20:11Speaker 4: So the allegory's there. It's not just Star Trek fans.
- 20:16Speaker 4: You can go further along if you go into the
- 20:20Speaker 4: similarities between the two fandoms, but they're there. They're there.
- 20:26Speaker 1: But how long can showrunners ignore it before those showrunners
- 20:30Speaker 1: get fired for not giving the fans what they want?
- 20:33Speaker 4: Well, if it's wrestling, they can keep going. It doesn't matter.
- 20:36Speaker 3: So, yeah.
- 20:38Speaker 4: Similarly with Star Trek, as long as As long as
- 20:40Speaker 4: they're still in the position, it's fine. But, you know,
- 20:44Speaker 4: they signed long contracts. So that's the other thing.
- 20:46Speaker 3: I think they also there comes a time I have
- 20:49Speaker 3: to realize that this product that we have can be
- 20:54Speaker 3: profitable at this scale. It's not profitable at this scale.
- 20:59Speaker 1: Right.
- 20:59Speaker 3: So we should stop trying to make it profitable at
- 21:03Speaker 3: this scale. All of the things that you're changing to
- 21:05Speaker 3: try and make it profitable at this scale are making
- 21:11Speaker 3: it not likable by the people who are already into it,
- 21:15Speaker 3: who already want to buy your product. I guess what
- 21:19Speaker 3: I'm saying is, would you rather have strong sales at
- 21:22Speaker 3: this scale or weak sales at this scale?
- 21:26Speaker 1: There's also word of mouth, because you know there's one
- 21:28Speaker 1: thing I'm not doing as a huge Star Trek fan
- 21:30Speaker 1: that co-hosts a Star Trek podcast. I'm not telling all
- 21:33Speaker 1: my friends, hey, you need to watch all the seasons
- 21:35Speaker 1: of Stranger Worlds. Because I was saying that for Lower Decks.
- 21:39Speaker 1: I was saying that for Strange New World season one
- 21:42Speaker 1: and two, but I'm keeping my mouth shut with season
- 21:46Speaker 1: three and four.
- 21:47Speaker 3: I mean, you know, if it's one thing that fans are,
- 21:51Speaker 3: it's honest. When people ask me, if someone wants to
- 21:54Speaker 3: get into Star Trek, I've gotten several people into Star
- 21:57Speaker 3: Trek over the years. I don't tell them to start
- 22:02Speaker 3: with the original series.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Of course not. No way. No way.
- 22:06Speaker 3: That's going to turn people off. That's absolutely going to
- 22:08Speaker 3: turn a modern... person off um i don't tell them
- 22:12Speaker 3: to start with tng season one yeah nope if they're
- 22:16Speaker 3: starting tng it's season three yeah correct when the uniforms
- 22:20Speaker 3: change yep and the and the beard is in full
- 22:23Speaker 3: effect that's when they start i will sometimes say uh
- 22:27Speaker 3: watch these two or three season one or season two
- 22:31Speaker 3: episodes like the measure of a man measure or something
- 22:34Speaker 3: like that um same thing with deep space nine I
- 22:38Speaker 3: tell them, watch the pilot episode and then skip to
- 22:41Speaker 3: when Worf shows up. That's all you need. That's all
- 22:46Speaker 3: you need. And then I tell them, if you fall
- 22:49Speaker 3: in love with the show and you want to go
- 22:51Speaker 3: back afterwards and watch the others, that's fine. If you
- 22:56Speaker 3: get to the end of Season 7 of TNG and
- 22:59Speaker 3: you're about to watch All Good Things, watch Encounter at
- 23:03Speaker 3: Farpoint first. Then watch All Good Things so that the
- 23:06Speaker 3: show makes sense for you. But You know, you don't
- 23:09Speaker 3: have to watch it all. I haven't told a single person.
- 23:14Speaker 3: You have to watch Modern Trek other than Picard season three. Yeah,
- 23:19Speaker 3: that's it.
- 23:20Speaker 4: I recently told somebody start with season four of DS9,
- 23:24Speaker 4: The Way of the Warrior.
- 23:26Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And I do not have
- 23:30Speaker 3: Robocop's gun. Do have Dr. McNamara. Oh, that's a villain.
- 23:36Speaker 3: Same line. But I don't have the gun, but I
- 23:39Speaker 3: will look.
- 23:40Speaker 1: Okay. I will look.
- 23:41Speaker 3: You know, it's funny. It just, it just occurred to
- 23:43Speaker 3: me talking about scaling and you can't be successful at
- 23:47Speaker 3: this scale. You can't be successful at that scale. You know,
- 23:50Speaker 3: it's no secret. I collect GI Joe's. Right. That, that
- 23:54Speaker 3: franchise is in quite a lull right now. And they
- 23:59Speaker 3: have done several relaunches over the years with varied levels
- 24:06Speaker 3: of success. And, and what they, what they, a conclusion
- 24:11Speaker 3: they came to somewhat recently in the last five or
- 24:13Speaker 3: 10 years is we have a group of fans about
- 24:17Speaker 3: this big. What do, what do those fans want? Well,
- 24:21Speaker 3: they want figures like the original four inch O-ring ones
- 24:25Speaker 3: they had when they were a kid and they want
- 24:29Speaker 3: six inch highly detailed versions of those same characters, uh, similar.
- 24:35Speaker 1: To Marvel legends.
- 24:36Speaker 3: Guess what they're selling? They're selling those. They're selling those.
- 24:42Speaker 3: And they're not selling as many of those as they're
- 24:46Speaker 3: selling Paw Patrol.
- 24:51Speaker 4: But they're profitable. Yeah.
- 24:56Speaker 1: They're around. We all have them displayed prominently.
- 24:59Speaker 3: I got the Ferengi bank. I'm looking at him across
- 25:03Speaker 3: the room. Most of my stuff is in storage. I
- 25:06Speaker 3: just happen to have these these things.
- 25:08Speaker 4: I got a little lunchbox of Aura. And then I
- 25:12Speaker 4: also got the Enterprise little lunchbox.
- 25:15Speaker 1: Look at those blue eyes.
- 25:16Speaker 4: There you go.
- 25:19Speaker 3: Striking blue eyes.
- 25:22Speaker 4: That's right. Show and tell on the internet.
- 25:25Speaker 3: Yeah, let's do show and tell.
- 25:27Speaker 1: Speaking of blue eyes, I explained to everybody last week, Dan,
- 25:30Speaker 1: when you were gone, why you always wear the sunglasses.
- 25:33Speaker 3: Why is that?
- 25:34Speaker 1: It's because when you gave your little video thing last week,
- 25:38Speaker 1: you didn't have the sunglasses on.
- 25:40Speaker 3: I realized that afterwards.
- 25:41Speaker 1: And your piercing blue eyes. I couldn't take my eyes
- 25:45Speaker 1: off of them.
- 25:46Speaker 3: That's right.
- 25:46Speaker 1: I was mesmerized by it.
- 25:47Speaker 4: Blue eyes.
- 25:49Speaker 1: My goodness.
- 25:51Speaker 3: Danny's got blue eyes.
- 25:54Speaker 4: Man, he's got pipes, too. Look at that.
- 25:57Speaker 1: I printed it out, and it's going to hang on
- 26:00Speaker 1: my wall.
- 26:01Speaker 3: It's taped to the bedpost.
- 26:03Speaker 4: That's right.
- 26:04Speaker 1: Yeah, it's taped to the bedpost. Wow.
- 26:08Speaker 4: I'm learning so much about you guys right now.
- 26:13Speaker 1: Oh, thank God. I forgot to send a link to
- 26:15Speaker 1: this to my mom. Oh, yeah.
- 26:17Speaker 4: Oh, thank God. Oh, yeah. All right. Well, should we
- 26:22Speaker 4: get to the main topic?
- 26:25Speaker 3: Didn't we already do it? We already did it.
- 26:26Speaker 1: Kind of.
- 26:27Speaker 4: We already did it. Yeah, we're going to talk about lanterns.
- 26:30Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 26:30Speaker 4: All right.
- 26:31Speaker 3: Fun will now commence.
- 26:36Speaker 1: No seven.
- 26:37Speaker 3: No.
- 26:37Speaker 1: No.
- 26:38Speaker 4: Okay, so, yeah, we're talking about season four, episode nine,
- 26:44Speaker 4: one on at a time. This is the sequel to,
- 26:49Speaker 4: what is it, the season one episode, Once Upon a Time.
- 26:53Speaker 4: What was it called?
- 26:53Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 26:54Speaker 1: Whatever. Yeah.
- 26:55Speaker 4: Yeah. It was in the recap. They made sure you remember.
- 27:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:02Speaker 4: I will say this. As I first watched this episode,
- 27:05Speaker 4: like the first five minutes, I was okay with it.
- 27:08Speaker 4: And then it fell off a cliff hard. I guess
- 27:12Speaker 4: that's a great question. At what point did you fall
- 27:15Speaker 4: off the cliff with this episode? What made you go like,
- 27:18Speaker 4: what is this bullshit? Where did it veer off for you?
- 27:20Speaker 1: As soon as I knew it was going to be the...
- 27:22Speaker 1: another episode of this is fantasy fairy tale. I, I
- 27:28Speaker 1: am not a fan of fan. Um, I, and, and
- 27:31Speaker 1: Star Trek for the most part has always been, you know,
- 27:34Speaker 1: rooted in sci-fi, not fantasy. There are two separate genres. Now, yes, they've,
- 27:38Speaker 1: they've delved into fantasy before. Um, but, uh, for the
- 27:43Speaker 1: most part, Star Trek is a sci-fi series, a sci-fi franchise. Um,
- 27:46Speaker 1: that was interesting. The, uh, you know, there were some
- 27:49Speaker 1: interesting parts of it. Uh, number one and, uh, Yeah,
- 27:53Speaker 1: having a romantic relationship, I thought one, and Erica. Wowzer.
- 27:59Speaker 1: They certainly used a push-up dress for La'an in this episode.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Good Lord. There were some interesting callbacks. And did anybody
- 28:08Speaker 1: catch at the end? I know I'm jumping to the
- 28:10Speaker 1: end of the episode, but Chief Engineer is gone.
- 28:13Speaker 4: Yeah, they wrote her out.
- 28:15Speaker 1: Yeah. No farewell. No fanfare. No goodbye.
- 28:18Speaker 3: Nope.
- 28:19Speaker 1: Just a one line, oh, by the way, Pele is
- 28:21Speaker 1: going to stay with the other ship.
- 28:23Speaker 4: Yep, she's gone. They said, we've only got six episodes left,
- 28:27Speaker 4: so see you later.
- 28:29Speaker 1: So for an over-the-top character, they gave her the most
- 28:31Speaker 1: underwhelming goodbye, or no goodbye at all.
- 28:35Speaker 3: I'm fine with it. Yeah.
- 28:37Speaker 1: So, whatever. Yeah, I thought it was silly. I thought
- 28:42Speaker 1: it was goofy, especially when Spock and Captain Hare decided
- 28:46Speaker 1: to go to the ship as their own doppelgangers, and
- 28:48Speaker 1: they tried to, you know... fit in, which was absolutely ridiculous.
- 28:54Speaker 1: Getting drunk, going to the bridge. I don't understand why
- 28:58Speaker 1: this episode was made. There wasn't a need for it.
- 29:01Speaker 3: Because they wanted to have fun. It was probably a
- 29:05Speaker 3: blast making it. It probably was.
- 29:06Speaker 4: I don't doubt they had a lot of fun making it.
- 29:08Speaker 3: Yeah, they had a lot of fun making it. We
- 29:09Speaker 3: didn't have a lot of fun watching it. Unfortunately, the
- 29:14Speaker 3: purpose of the show is for us to have.
- 29:15Speaker 1: Fun, not them. That's why they're getting paid. I feel
- 29:20Speaker 1: like I should be getting paid.
- 29:22Speaker 3: Yeah. So make it make sense. Why did this latter
- 29:27Speaker 3: place exist? I'm confused. I know it's based on.
- 29:31Speaker 1: Daniel, you're the story guy.
- 29:32Speaker 3: I know it's based on the book that... Rekia? Is
- 29:37Speaker 3: that her name?
- 29:38Speaker 1: Mbenga's daughter? Explain it to us like we're Star Wars fans.
- 29:42Speaker 3: Oh, shots fired. Wow. Well, okay, so.
- 29:47Speaker 4: So it was like a group of aliens that recreated
- 29:50Speaker 4: that storybook for Mbenga's daughter, right? Originally.
- 29:55Speaker 3: I remember that.
- 29:57Speaker 4: And so... from what I understood, they were just out
- 30:00Speaker 4: there living their best life as the storybook character. Cause
- 30:03Speaker 4: that's what those aliens do, I guess. And so they
- 30:07Speaker 4: just came across the flat earth and it was storybook time. Um,
- 30:13Speaker 4: which for me.
- 30:14Speaker 3: What, yeah, but that doesn't make sense.
- 30:17Speaker 4: Cause, Oh, I'm not saying it makes sense.
- 30:19Speaker 3: I'm just saying my bank and bang. I never say
- 30:22Speaker 3: it right. Yeah. Bank is character. There was no character
- 30:26Speaker 3: in the, he played the character. So how is he
- 30:30Speaker 3: there again as the character, but it's not him?
- 30:33Speaker 5: Right.
- 30:34Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm not saying any of this makes sense. I'm
- 30:36Speaker 4: just saying this is the logic they gave us that
- 30:38Speaker 4: did not make sense. And that's why so many people
- 30:40Speaker 4: felt like it felt happenstance because there was no logic
- 30:46Speaker 4: to it. There was no... So that's part of the
- 30:50Speaker 4: thing in story structure, right? Things need to have a
- 30:53Speaker 4: structure to them for you to care, right? Because if
- 30:56Speaker 4: you give me a set of guidelines, then I know Well,
- 30:58Speaker 4: if it falls out of those guidelines, things aren't making
- 31:01Speaker 4: any sense anymore. And this is all bullshit.
- 31:03Speaker 1: Right.
- 31:04Speaker 4: So for me, the thing that that got me that
- 31:09Speaker 4: almost immediately is when they scan the planet, they're like, oh,
- 31:13Speaker 4: it's our storybook planet. And they're talking about whether or
- 31:16Speaker 4: not they should go down and investigate. And Mbega talks
- 31:21Speaker 4: about like, well, you know, Lon, you've been going through
- 31:24Speaker 4: a lot of stuff emotionally. And that's what these aliens
- 31:27Speaker 4: are there to do. I think you should go down to,
- 31:29Speaker 4: like they literally say, a potentially dangerous planet, and you
- 31:33Speaker 4: should go have group therapy.
- 31:35Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 31:36Speaker 3: What?
- 31:37Speaker 4: What kind of medical logic is that?
- 31:39Speaker 3: So are these, so the people that are down there
- 31:43Speaker 3: that look like our crew, are they holograms? Are they aliens?
- 31:48Speaker 3: Are they clones of the crew? What are they?
- 31:51Speaker 4: We don't know. They don't tell us. They just hand
- 31:54Speaker 4: wave that.
- 31:55Speaker 3: Well, unfortunately- That's not good enough.
- 31:59Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 32:00Speaker 3: Because if they're holograms, the transporter would have known that.
- 32:06Speaker 4: And never brought those people aboard.
- 32:07Speaker 3: And never brought them up. If they were aliens, the
- 32:10Speaker 3: transporter would have known that and would have never brought
- 32:13Speaker 3: them up. Right. If they're clones, if they're perfect duplicates
- 32:19Speaker 3: of the people on our crew, and the aliens that
- 32:23Speaker 3: created all this have the ability to do that, then
- 32:27Speaker 3: Rekia could have just been cured four years ago. So
- 32:30Speaker 3: it doesn't make sense.
- 32:30Speaker 4: None of it makes sense. That's the problem. The more...
- 32:33Speaker 4: You just scratch the surface of the story. Makes no sense,
- 32:36Speaker 4: you know? They just literally went, we have the costumes.
- 32:39Speaker 4: We want to do a fantasy episode. Let's do it,
- 32:42Speaker 4: you know? And I know people are pointing to the
- 32:45Speaker 4: Q in Sherwood Forest episode. But you had Q, so
- 32:49Speaker 4: that's what gave it the logic.
- 32:50Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 32:51Speaker 4: You know?
- 32:52Speaker 1: He can do anything.
- 32:53Speaker 4: A character we knew and liked.
- 32:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:54Speaker 4: Well, not even that. Just, you know, he... his abilities
- 32:57Speaker 4: gave you the reason to why it all worked the
- 32:59Speaker 4: way it did.
- 32:59Speaker 3: Yeah. Right.
- 33:01Speaker 1: It rooted the fantasy in sci-fi.
- 33:04Speaker 3: Right. Right.
- 33:06Speaker 4: Whereas this just happened, you know, for no reason. If
- 33:09Speaker 4: things just happen for no reason, it's, it's what I've
- 33:12Speaker 4: told you guys before. What story structure, like things need
- 33:14Speaker 4: to be there for this and then this, but if,
- 33:19Speaker 4: but if it's just, and then this happens and then
- 33:21Speaker 4: this happens and that happens, right. it's just a string
- 33:24Speaker 4: of things that don't connect. And what do I care?
- 33:27Speaker 1: Right.
- 33:27Speaker 4: It's like when a little, little, little kids tell you
- 33:29Speaker 4: stories and you're like, I don't know what any of
- 33:31Speaker 4: this has to do with anything, buddy.
- 33:33Speaker 1: What do you mean?
- 33:33Speaker 4: There was a giraffe that all of a sudden you
- 33:35Speaker 4: showed up down the street and now you want an
- 33:37Speaker 4: ice cream.
- 33:37Speaker 3: Right.
- 33:38Speaker 4: It doesn't, it doesn't make any sense.
- 33:40Speaker 1: Right.
- 33:40Speaker 4: You know, but if I tell you, yeah, I tell
- 33:43Speaker 4: you one of my car tires popped and then all
- 33:45Speaker 4: of a sudden I swerved on the freeway and I
- 33:47Speaker 4: hit another car. Well, that makes sense because therefore this,
- 33:49Speaker 4: therefore this, therefore that, you know, you know, they.
- 33:52Speaker 3: Could have done a story like this and there's ways,
- 33:56Speaker 3: there's ways to do it. Um, this could have been,
- 33:59Speaker 3: you could have had, okay, they, you know, there, there's
- 34:03Speaker 3: a colony, there's a colony or something. They rescued people
- 34:06Speaker 3: from this colony. Some kid on the, uh, on the planet,
- 34:10Speaker 3: he's really injured. They got to get him to a
- 34:12Speaker 3: star base, him or her star base. Uh, and Benga's is,
- 34:16Speaker 3: is keeping this kid alive. Um, And the kid is like,
- 34:20Speaker 3: am I going to die? No, you're not going to die.
- 34:22Speaker 3: I'm afraid I'm going to die. Can you tell me
- 34:23Speaker 3: a story? My dad used to tell me stories when
- 34:26Speaker 3: I was scared, when I was scared and I'm really scared.
- 34:29Speaker 3: And he says, I used to have a daughter your age.
- 34:31Speaker 3: Let me tell you a story that I used to
- 34:33Speaker 3: read to her. And bang, you're back in this world
- 34:37Speaker 3: that we've seen before in the first season. And since
- 34:40Speaker 3: he's telling a story, you can do whatever you want.
- 34:46Speaker 3: None of it has to make sense in the end.
- 34:49Speaker 3: Cause it's just a story. Yeah.
- 34:51Speaker 4: That would have been great. And like, they're fighting the
- 34:53Speaker 4: fear monster on that story. And so, yep. It dovetails
- 34:57Speaker 4: into the original.
- 34:57Speaker 3: You have, you have him narrating it.
- 34:59Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 35:00Speaker 3: Well, which is tough. He's difficult to understand, but you know,
- 35:03Speaker 3: you try really hard to have him narrate it.
- 35:06Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 35:06Speaker 3: You know, he spends an extra week at post. That's right. Yeah.
- 35:10Speaker 3: And you know, you can, you can, you can even,
- 35:14Speaker 3: you can tell by his narrations, that he's changing the
- 35:18Speaker 3: story as he goes to better suit the needs of
- 35:22Speaker 3: this child, the fear that this child has right now.
- 35:25Speaker 3: I would have totally bought that. That would have made sense.
- 35:28Speaker 3: That would have made sense. Or the first part of
- 35:34Speaker 3: the episode is a real away mission that they've been on.
- 35:38Speaker 3: And then this story that he's telling the kid is
- 35:41Speaker 3: the medieval equivalent of that. So he's telling the same story,
- 35:46Speaker 3: but with, with swords and horses and wizardry instead of
- 35:51Speaker 3: phasers and transporters and buffers and, and all of this stuff,
- 35:56Speaker 3: a thousand percent better. Yeah, I do.
- 35:58Speaker 4: I would have accepted. They met some other aliens who,
- 36:02Speaker 4: you know, to them stories are precious. And so they
- 36:04Speaker 4: got to tell them a story to make first contact
- 36:07Speaker 4: go well, whatever, something, give me a reason for this.
- 36:12Speaker 4: Not just, Hey, we're going to have you go do
- 36:14Speaker 4: group therapy, uh, therapy lawn. It'll be fine. Go on
- 36:18Speaker 4: that flat earth. We have no idea what's going to
- 36:19Speaker 4: happen down there.
- 36:20Speaker 3: Good luck.
- 36:20Speaker 4: You know, it didn't make sense. It didn't make sense.
- 36:22Speaker 1: That dress. That looks like a T-1000. Yeah. Grenade. Yup. Yup.
- 36:30Speaker 4: They just took a bunch of tinfoil and said, wrap
- 36:32Speaker 4: it around her.
- 36:33Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 36:34Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 36:35Speaker 1: I half expected it to like, let's start screaming.
- 36:42Speaker 3: And then it falls in the lava.
- 36:45Speaker 4: Dude, when she turns into a dragon, flies out into space,
- 36:48Speaker 4: fights the Enterprise, the dragons can survive in space, but
- 36:52Speaker 4: the minute she turns back, that's a problem?
- 36:55Speaker 1: The first thing that I said when she turned into
- 36:57Speaker 1: a dragon, I was like, aw, she needs a donkey! Yeah!
- 37:02Speaker 4: Oh, dude, I thought of Ultra Beast. Remember that game?
- 37:06Speaker 1: Oh, yeah! Yeah, for Sega.
- 37:09Speaker 4: Yeah. Ultra Beast. That's right. Gosh. Jacob, I love the
- 37:15Speaker 4: Flat Earth. I bet the Flat Earthers loved it.
- 37:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 37:18Speaker 1: Oh, I'm sure they did. I'm sure they did. See? See? See?
- 37:21Speaker 1: It's real. It's real.
- 37:23Speaker 3: It's real.
- 37:24Speaker 4: Speaking of that, one of the- What did you think
- 37:26Speaker 4: about when bringing up Benny Johnson?
- 37:28Speaker 1: Russell. Benny Russell.
- 37:30Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 37:31Speaker 1: He was the author of the book.
- 37:33Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 37:33Speaker 3: But he wrote sci-fi. He didn't write fantasy.
- 37:35Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 37:36Speaker 3: Like, so close, guys.
- 37:37Speaker 4: You should have made a Jake.
- 37:38Speaker 6: So close.
- 37:39Speaker 4: Even though he's behind the times.
- 37:41Speaker 1: So close.
- 37:42Speaker 3: There were quite a few Princess Bride references. Somebody said
- 37:49Speaker 3: As You Wish, which is a reference to that. Pele
- 37:52Speaker 3: was in that movie. She was the wizard's wife. Miracle Max.
- 37:59Speaker 3: They make reference to Miracle Max. This one's a deep cut.
- 38:02Speaker 3: What was she eating at the time? She was talking
- 38:07Speaker 3: about that. She was eating chocolates. In her scenes, they
- 38:10Speaker 3: were creating the pill to bring Wesley back to life.
- 38:14Speaker 3: And they coated it in chocolate because she said the
- 38:18Speaker 3: chocolate coating makes it go down easier.
- 38:21Speaker 4: That is a deep cut.
- 38:24Speaker 3: That is a deep cut.
- 38:25Speaker 4: You know what that deserves?
- 38:27Speaker 3: Warning!
- 38:29Speaker 1: Warning!
- 38:29Speaker 4: Nerd alert!
- 38:31Speaker 6: Nerd alert!
- 38:32Speaker 4: 100%. Yeah. I didn't mind that it was a fantasy episode.
- 38:40Speaker 4: What I mind is that it wasn't anything to it.
- 38:43Speaker 4: It was just random bullshit.
- 38:45Speaker 3: Yeah. You know, so this was number nine. So we
- 38:48Speaker 3: only have one more.
- 38:49Speaker 4: We only got one more.
- 38:51Speaker 1: I'm looking forward to next week's episode. I think it's
- 38:53Speaker 1: going to be a good one. Tomorrow's enterprise.
- 38:54Speaker 3: I didn't, I didn't look at the preview.
- 38:57Speaker 4: I didn't look at it either.
- 38:59Speaker 1: Um, yeah, I haven't seen the preview. All I've done
- 39:02Speaker 1: is read the synopsis.
- 39:03Speaker 3: So I know sometimes, um, the last episode of a
- 39:07Speaker 3: season of a show, um, is sometimes is a shift
- 39:13Speaker 3: in what's happening to prepare the viewer for a different
- 39:17Speaker 3: direction for the next season star trek often did cliffhanger
- 39:22Speaker 3: uh modern trek does cliffhanger did cliffhanger episodes yeah yeah
- 39:28Speaker 3: for the season finale so I'm hoping, I'm hoping that's
- 39:33Speaker 3: what we get.
- 39:34Speaker 4: I mean, they shot season four and five basically back
- 39:36Speaker 4: to back.
- 39:37Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, and they're talking about next season is not
- 39:40Speaker 3: like this season. So I'm right. That's okay. Well, give
- 39:46Speaker 3: me a little bit of next season, this season right now. please.
- 39:50Speaker 4: I've also heard though reports that season five is full
- 39:54Speaker 4: of big swings. So people are just guessing everything right now.
- 39:58Speaker 1: So do you think the right, like when they took
- 40:01Speaker 1: a big swing with like the crossover episode and they,
- 40:05Speaker 1: they knocked it out of the park, do you think
- 40:07Speaker 1: they were like, Oh, let's just do that. You know,
- 40:09Speaker 1: when they did the lower decks crossover episode, which was
- 40:11Speaker 1: a little silly, they're like, Oh, let's just, let's go
- 40:14Speaker 1: for sillier and sillier. You know?
- 40:16Speaker 4: So I was thinking about this, like, What made them go, oh,
- 40:20Speaker 4: let's do a whole season of gimmicks. This is the way.
- 40:22Speaker 4: I really think, and I have no proof of this.
- 40:26Speaker 4: I have no inside information or anything. But I really
- 40:30Speaker 4: think they saw the success of WandaVision. And WandaVision was
- 40:35Speaker 4: doing different eras of TV every week. And they went, oh,
- 40:43Speaker 4: people like that.
- 40:45Speaker 3: Let's do stuff. But that made sense for the story
- 40:48Speaker 3: that WandaVision was telling.
- 40:49Speaker 4: That's the difference.
- 40:51Speaker 3: I remember watching that show in real time, and as
- 40:55Speaker 3: all that was happening, I was like, what are they doing?
- 40:58Speaker 3: What the hell are they doing? And then in the end,
- 41:01Speaker 3: you find out that watching those shows was her escape
- 41:07Speaker 3: from living in a war-torn society. So that, in her mind,
- 41:11Speaker 3: that's what a perfect life looks like. She had the
- 41:17Speaker 3: opportunity to recreate her own existence from the ground up.
- 41:20Speaker 3: That's the templates that she used. It made sense for
- 41:24Speaker 3: the story.
- 41:25Speaker 4: But not only that, even as the different TV eras
- 41:28Speaker 4: were going, the complexity of her emotions changed, right? So
- 41:32Speaker 4: from the 50s style, it was very simple. Is she
- 41:34Speaker 4: really happy? Yes or no? So then you find out
- 41:38Speaker 4: she's not really happy. Then the 60s one, right, where
- 41:42Speaker 4: it's a little more brightly colored, it's a little more,
- 41:44Speaker 4: you know, what is it, Brady Bunch, and you find
- 41:49Speaker 4: out deeper about her emotions and what's going on. So
- 41:52Speaker 4: the further it goes, the deeper her emotions go, and
- 41:54Speaker 4: the more you find out how troubled she really is, right?
- 41:58Speaker 4: And that's what was going on and made it connect.
- 42:01Speaker 4: That's what made it interesting. These are all just random
- 42:04Speaker 4: things just to do random things, and they didn't learn
- 42:07Speaker 4: that lesson from WandaVision. That's what I'm guessing. Like, I
- 42:10Speaker 4: literally think they were in the writer's room and said, well,
- 42:13Speaker 4: let's do our own WandaVision. That was possible.
- 42:14Speaker 1: Speaking of writer's room, has the writing staff changed, you know?
- 42:19Speaker 4: I don't know. I know the show producers are pretty consistent.
- 42:24Speaker 1: Maybe this is successful. Have they actually taken the writers from,
- 42:27Speaker 1: you know, because I remember us. Oh, it was. OK,
- 42:32Speaker 1: there was a CBS did something like 15 years ago.
- 42:37Speaker 1: They took the writers from Two and a Half Men
- 42:41Speaker 1: and the writers from CSI, and they had them write
- 42:46Speaker 1: an episode for each other.
- 42:47Speaker 3: Oh, did they?
- 42:48Speaker 1: Yes, they did. Yes, they did. And both were decent episodes.
- 42:54Speaker 1: The NCIS episode was a little comedic, and the Two
- 42:59Speaker 1: and a Half Men episode was just a regular episode
- 43:01Speaker 1: of Two and a Half Men. And they just did
- 43:03Speaker 1: it just for the hell of it. And I'm wondering,
- 43:06Speaker 1: has there been a shift in writers? Did the producers
- 43:11Speaker 1: at Kurtzman see a writing group that he liked and
- 43:15Speaker 1: grabbed them? There's got to be a reason for this.
- 43:20Speaker 4: Yeah, so I do know this, right? Every year, Paramount
- 43:24Speaker 4: does what they call a Writer's Fellowship. I know this
- 43:27Speaker 4: because I was going to apply to it, but ultimately
- 43:30Speaker 4: I decided I want to do film, not TV, so
- 43:33Speaker 4: I didn't go for it. But the way it works is,
- 43:36Speaker 4: You have to write two writing samples, right? The first
- 43:40Speaker 4: writing sample has to be what they call a stunt
- 43:45Speaker 4: script for any one of their current shows. You pick
- 43:49Speaker 4: whatever their current show is that you like, and you
- 43:52Speaker 4: write a script in that show style. Then you have
- 43:54Speaker 4: to give them your own original pilot for a TV series.
- 43:59Speaker 4: And so you walk in with two, with two writing samples,
- 44:03Speaker 4: one to show that you can write, but two to show,
- 44:05Speaker 4: you know, you can write their style as well. So
- 44:08Speaker 4: on the list.
- 44:08Speaker 3: So he's an orangutan, but he's also a dentist. That's right.
- 44:12Speaker 4: That's right. That's right.
- 44:15Speaker 1: Yes.
- 44:15Speaker 4: Top hat monkey goes West. Here we go.
- 44:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 44:20Speaker 4: So, so the strange new worlds was on the list.
- 44:22Speaker 1: Right.
- 44:23Speaker 4: And, and you could write one of their episodes. And
- 44:26Speaker 4: so the idea is, you know, You show you can write,
- 44:30Speaker 4: and maybe you can write on this episode. Throughout the fellowship,
- 44:35Speaker 4: you're learning to write in the Paramount style, and maybe
- 44:38Speaker 4: you will be brought on board for that show that
- 44:41Speaker 4: you showed interest. So maybe they're getting writers out of
- 44:45Speaker 4: that because ultimately they pick between 12 to 14 writers
- 44:49Speaker 4: and they put them in that fellowship. That's every year,
- 44:51Speaker 4: and that's where they get some new blood. But, you know,
- 44:55Speaker 4: they change out writers all the time too, like in
- 44:57Speaker 4: any show.
- 44:57Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 44:58Speaker 4: You know, it's also what we talked about before. We're like, oh,
- 45:01Speaker 4: what color do you want your house painted? Well, that's
- 45:03Speaker 4: going to look ugly, but whatever. We're going to paint
- 45:05Speaker 4: it whatever, you know, the main guy says. It's the
- 45:07Speaker 4: showrunners that matter more than the actual writers.
- 45:09Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 45:10Speaker 4: Because the showrunners will read a script, and if they
- 45:13Speaker 4: like it or not, they may even change a few
- 45:15Speaker 4: things depending on what they want. And ultimately, it's going
- 45:18Speaker 4: to be whatever the showrunner wants.
- 45:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 45:19Speaker 1: We're just so down because one of the worst emotions
- 45:22Speaker 1: that a person can have is being disappointed.
- 45:25Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 45:26Speaker 4: And that's what all of us are.
- 45:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 45:27Speaker 4: We're not even mad, we're just disappointed.
- 45:29Speaker 1: Yeah, we're just disappointed. I mean, you know, when you
- 45:31Speaker 1: look at your kid and you're like, I'm not mad,
- 45:33Speaker 1: I'm disappointed, the look of, like, you know, sheer.
- 45:37Speaker 4: Horror on their face is even worse.
- 45:40Speaker 1: I just want to go up to Paramount and say, listen,
- 45:42Speaker 1: I'm not mad, you're making track, I'm just very disappointed.
- 45:45Speaker 1: What were you going to say, Dan? I don't like
- 45:47Speaker 1: your friends like Alex Kersman.
- 45:50Speaker 3: I think when Dr. Orangutan DDS comes out, you won't
- 45:53Speaker 3: be disappointed. No, no, but yeah.
- 45:57Speaker 4: I've got the infograph of how this season has been received,
- 46:03Speaker 4: and it's been pretty bad.
- 46:05Speaker 3: It's a 6.2.
- 46:06Speaker 4: I mean, there's no episode over 9, right? They're all 8s,
- 46:14Speaker 4: the 3 that have been higher up.
- 46:16Speaker 1: Well, what's scary about this graph is if you extrapolate
- 46:19Speaker 1: into next year based on the fact that these seasons
- 46:22Speaker 1: were shot back-to-back, Yeah. I mean, it might as well
- 46:25Speaker 1: just be an extension. Those six episodes might as well
- 46:27Speaker 1: be an extension of season four, you know.
- 46:30Speaker 4: I just saw it, Dan.
- 46:32Speaker 3: Put it up. Put it up.
- 46:33Speaker 4: I'm going to. I'm going to.
- 46:35Speaker 3: Coming this fall from CBS. Yeah. Available also on Paramount +.
- 46:42Speaker 3: Here it is.
- 46:43Speaker 4: This is great.
- 46:43Speaker 3: Dr. Orangutan, DDS.
- 46:46Speaker 6: Yes.
- 46:47Speaker 1: Oh, my God.
- 46:52Speaker 4: I can't wait to write this show. And the thing is,
- 46:56Speaker 4: you would think comedy, but it's actually a drama.
- 46:58Speaker 3: It is a drama. It is a drama.
- 47:01Speaker 1: It's a drama.
- 47:04Speaker 4: Why do I feel like the orangutan needs to speak
- 47:07Speaker 4: in a British accent? Even though that makes no sense.
- 47:13Speaker 3: He's dead, Jim.
- 47:19Speaker 4: Just in dental work.
- 47:20Speaker 3: Oh, he's dead now.
- 47:23Speaker 1: Oh, my God.
- 47:24Speaker 4: Yeah. This episode was rough, man.
- 47:27Speaker 1: Well, at least when this is over, we have another
- 47:30Speaker 1: season to look forward to.
- 47:32Speaker 4: Looking forward.
- 47:33Speaker 1: All the other Star Trek that's coming out. Oh, wait.
- 47:35Speaker 4: I mean, we got Starfleet Academy and one more season.
- 47:39Speaker 1: That may or may not come out. Yeah.
- 47:41Speaker 4: Oh, it'll come out. They spent way too much money.
- 47:43Speaker 4: They're going to unleash that.
- 47:45Speaker 3: Do I have to?
- 47:46Speaker 4: You know what I could see, though, with Starfleet Academy
- 47:49Speaker 4: is they're going.
- 47:50Speaker 1: To dump it all at once. Straight to VHS.
- 47:53Speaker 4: Mm-hmm. Well, okay.
- 47:56Speaker 1: VHS. Yeah.
- 47:58Speaker 3: People are like, I can't even watch it. Exactly. Exactly.
- 48:03Speaker 4: I don't know if you saw, but they released that
- 48:07Speaker 4: Golden Axe show, which is by the same showrunner as
- 48:10Speaker 4: Lower Decks, Mike Mahon.
- 48:11Speaker 3: Okay.
- 48:12Speaker 4: And they unleashed all the episodes all at once. It's
- 48:15Speaker 4: not a week to a week.
- 48:15Speaker 3: Where is that?
- 48:16Speaker 1: Golden Axe. On Paramount +. Based on the video game?
- 48:19Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. Yes, we asked for Altered Beast. They gave
- 48:22Speaker 3: us Golden Axe.
- 48:23Speaker 4: That's right. That's right.
- 48:24Speaker 1: Right. Yeah.
- 48:26Speaker 4: I watched the first episode. It's fine. It's Lower Decks,
- 48:30Speaker 4: but fantasy.
- 48:31Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 48:32Speaker 3: When does Echo the Dolphin come out?
- 48:35Speaker 1: Yes.
- 48:36Speaker 4: I was waiting for ToeJam & Earl, but you know.
- 48:39Speaker 3: ToeJam & Earl.
- 48:43Speaker 1: Wow.
- 48:43Speaker 3: Alex Kidd in Miracle World.
- 48:45Speaker 4: That's right. King Chameleon.
- 48:48Speaker 3: Wonder Boy in Monsterland.
- 48:50Speaker 4: There you go. There you go.
- 48:51Speaker 1: Jack and Dexter. Oh, yeah.
- 48:53Speaker 4: All the obscure titles.
- 48:55Speaker 3: Ho-Jam and Earl.
- 48:57Speaker 4: Oh, God. Yeah. What do we think about Kirk turning
- 49:00Speaker 4: into a werewolf?
- 49:01Speaker 1: I thought the effects were pretty good. I kept thinking,
- 49:04Speaker 1: you know, this is better than anything Once Upon a
- 49:06Speaker 1: Time ever had.
- 49:07Speaker 3: Well, they already had the VR template from Altered Beast.
- 49:12Speaker 1: Right. So they probably just ported it over. They just
- 49:14Speaker 1: ported it over.
- 49:15Speaker 4: I legit thought, oh, it was Paul Wesley on the...
- 49:19Speaker 4: on the teen wolf show now to look it up
- 49:22Speaker 4: no he was on the vampire diaries so it wasn't
- 49:24Speaker 4: even a callback to that.
- 49:25Speaker 1: Yeah right well and you know the with the visual
- 49:28Speaker 1: effects i was watching an episode of uh stewart fails
- 49:31Speaker 1: to save the universe and in the opening sequence, um,
- 49:36Speaker 1: it's just a bunch of the writers giving messages to
- 49:39Speaker 1: the viewers and, and they're like, uh, in, in one
- 49:42Speaker 1: of them, like season in, in, uh, episode three or four,
- 49:46Speaker 1: it says our, our visual effects are pretty good, but
- 49:49Speaker 1: then again, any kid with an iPhone can do what
- 49:51Speaker 1: we're doing.
- 49:52Speaker 3: Right.
- 49:53Speaker 1: Right.
- 49:54Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 49:54Speaker 3: I haven't watched that. Is it worth watching?
- 49:57Speaker 1: It's, it's, it's horrible. It's absolutely worth watching.
- 50:00Speaker 4: It's like I said, man, the fact that they went
- 50:02Speaker 4: into a studio and said, give us millions of dollars
- 50:05Speaker 4: to make this bullshit. And they went, yup. And they went,
- 50:07Speaker 4: that's the amazing thing about the show.
- 50:09Speaker 3: Well, apparently, uh, uh, the, the golden age flash was
- 50:15Speaker 3: in the episode this week. He was fighting a Batman villain,
- 50:18Speaker 3: but right. I, I heard that too.
- 50:20Speaker 1: I haven't, uh, I haven't seen that episode yet, but yeah.
- 50:23Speaker 4: I saw like episode seven and it felt like it
- 50:25Speaker 4: was like the season one ender. I was like, Oh,
- 50:28Speaker 4: I guess we're done now.
- 50:28Speaker 1: We watched through episode four so far. We went to a,
- 50:31Speaker 1: that's fun. You know?
- 50:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 50:33Speaker 1: It's lower deck sliders, basically. Yeah. Yeah, it is.
- 50:37Speaker 4: It's dumb sliders. That's all it is.
- 50:39Speaker 5: Yep.
- 50:40Speaker 1: It's dumb sliders.
- 50:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 50:41Speaker 4: When you get to the cow planet, it's really... Oh, boy.
- 50:46Speaker 3: Okay.
- 50:46Speaker 1: Yeah, we just watched the Bernadette is a demon episode.
- 50:51Speaker 1: And one episode after that. The insane asylum. It's good.
- 50:55Speaker 3: So, is it kid-friendly?
- 50:56Speaker 4: Ish. There's some stuff that... Like, when they go to
- 50:59Speaker 4: the tribe and they're... all about hooking up with other people.
- 51:03Speaker 1: There are backgrounds where the bodies are exploding, but it's
- 51:07Speaker 1: in the background. They show it from inside a room.
- 51:11Speaker 4: Maybe they don't do anything full on, but they talk
- 51:14Speaker 4: about it.
- 51:15Speaker 1: My recommendations for watching shows this week are Reacher and
- 51:21Speaker 1: Ted Lasso.
- 51:24Speaker 4: I recommend go touch grass. Go outside and enjoy it.
- 51:27Speaker 3: I did five hours of yard work yesterday. You touched
- 51:30Speaker 3: a lot of grass. I touched enough grass. Yeah. My
- 51:33Speaker 3: body's killing me right now. Okay.
- 51:35Speaker 4: Well, let's get to listener feedback because we got people
- 51:38Speaker 4: already waiting. Listener feedback.
- 51:43Speaker 5: All right.
- 51:44Speaker 3: So, yeah.
- 51:45Speaker 1: If you want to send us an email, which I
- 51:46Speaker 1: have one. Oh, yeah. You can email us at trekcasttng
- 51:51Speaker 1: at gmail.com. Or you can send one to me at strongbeard1701.
- 51:59Speaker 1: at gmail.com.
- 52:02Speaker 4: We're also all over the social medias at Trek cast
- 52:05Speaker 4: TNG and, uh, yeah, everywhere.
- 52:09Speaker 1: Um, so we got, uh, I got an email from, uh,
- 52:12Speaker 1: Tim in Australia. Oh, okay. Now it's, it's, it's sort
- 52:16Speaker 1: of on the political side, but since we already touched
- 52:19Speaker 1: on the political side, he said we can read it
- 52:21Speaker 1: or not. It doesn't matter. He said, uh, he says,
- 52:23Speaker 1: maybe I'm seeing this from a living outside the U
- 52:26Speaker 1: S looking in point of view. I know you guys
- 52:29Speaker 1: don't get into real-world politics on the show. Leave that
- 52:32Speaker 1: to the political podcast. So up to you if you
- 52:34Speaker 1: want to read this. But maybe the writers were trying
- 52:36Speaker 1: to send a message in the last episode, the subplot
- 52:39Speaker 1: where a cowardly idiot gets put in charge, helped by
- 52:43Speaker 1: someone who pulls the wool over people's eyes, and everyone
- 52:46Speaker 1: blindly follows him because he's in charge.
- 52:49Speaker 3: Dot, dot, dot, dot, dot.
- 52:50Speaker 1: It's got a certain real-world feel right now.
- 52:53Speaker 4: I feel like that's reaching.
- 52:56Speaker 3: I think sometimes people see what they want to see.
- 52:58Speaker 1: Yeah. Right.
- 52:59Speaker 4: And that's a common trope in literature, too. The cowardly
- 53:02Speaker 4: leader that's being manipulated. Like, that's even in Lord of
- 53:05Speaker 4: the Rings. Like, the guy that's being controlled by Wormtongue
- 53:09Speaker 4: and all that.
- 53:10Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 53:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 53:11Speaker 4: Yeah, it's just a common trope. We got a voicemail.
- 53:16Speaker 4: The Penguin is back.
- 53:17Speaker 1: Yay. Yeah.
- 53:19Speaker 8: The latest episode of Star Trek. Okay, it is what
- 53:24Speaker 8: it is. Production, amazing. Costumes, amazing. Pike and Spock's characters,
- 53:34Speaker 8: fucking hilarious. But like I said, this would have been
- 53:37Speaker 8: the perfect Trillian episode.
- 53:39Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 53:40Speaker 1: Yep.
- 53:40Speaker 8: But it didn't go that way. But production, the acting
- 53:44Speaker 8: stuff were great. Yeah, it just didn't mean anything to
- 53:48Speaker 8: me anyway. But oh well, this episode looks great.
- 53:53Speaker 4: He's had enough of this.
- 53:55Speaker 3: I mean, this is the opposite of what made Star
- 53:59Speaker 3: Trek great. TOS looks like ass. It looked like ass
- 54:04Speaker 3: in 1960s. But the writing was good and the stories
- 54:08Speaker 3: were good. So we were okay with it. You flip that,
- 54:13Speaker 3: you know, the reciprocal of that. It looks great, but it's,
- 54:15Speaker 3: you know, the story's no good. It's not enough.
- 54:19Speaker 1: The dog in it was actually Christina Chong's own personal puppy.
- 54:25Speaker 4: Oh, that's right. Yeah, that's her actual dog.
- 54:26Speaker 1: Named Ewok.
- 54:28Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 54:29Speaker 3: Okay.
- 54:30Speaker 4: And if you want to leave us a voicemail, you can. 570-661-0001.
- 54:36Speaker 4: That's 570-661-0001. And I, too, will turn you into a
- 54:42Speaker 4: weird little creature and put you on the show. That's right.
- 54:45Speaker 3: So... That's right.
- 54:46Speaker 4: There you go.
- 54:47Speaker 1: That's basically how I got my start in TrekCast.
- 54:49Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 54:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 54:51Speaker 4: You would get us the... I forget their names.
- 54:55Speaker 1: The Packlets. Yeah, the Packlets.
- 54:56Speaker 4: The Packlets, yeah. Oh, I would love to hear their
- 54:59Speaker 4: review for this season.
- 55:00Speaker 1: You know what? It might be coming. It might be coming.
- 55:04Speaker 3: Best yet.
- 55:06Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 55:09Speaker 1: I do a good impersonation of my friend.
- 55:11Speaker 4: That's right. At least next week we get to see
- 55:15Speaker 4: our predictions and how they went. Alright, we got Chaz
- 55:22Speaker 4: and Jacob waiting on the line, so let's bring on,
- 55:24Speaker 4: we'll do one at a time. Let's bring on Jacob
- 55:27Speaker 4: first since he chimed in first. There we go, there's Jacob.
- 55:31Speaker 1: Hey, what's going on?
- 55:32Speaker 5: Hey, what's going on?
- 55:34Speaker 4: You got that low angle like you're about to do
- 55:36Speaker 4: a rap video.
- 55:38Speaker 5: Nah, Batman day from yesterday.
- 55:41Speaker 4: Oh yeah, there you go.
- 55:43Speaker 5: I'm trying to recover from that episode.
- 55:46Speaker 4: Okay, yeah. Since you got Batman day. Who's your favorite Robin?
- 55:51Speaker 5: The cartoons.
- 55:51Speaker 4: Okay, the cartoons.
- 55:53Speaker 3: Okay.
- 55:53Speaker 5: The cartoon version. There hasn't really been a good Robin
- 55:56Speaker 5: live action.
- 55:57Speaker 4: Okay.
- 55:58Speaker 5: Honestly, Robin from Titans. Probably the best one. Because you
- 56:02Speaker 5: get to see him become Nightwing later on.
- 56:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 56:04Speaker 5: And that Nightwing suit was just beautiful.
- 56:07Speaker 4: Yeah, it was a good suit.
- 56:08Speaker 1: Titan. You talking about the live action one? Yeah.
- 56:11Speaker 5: Yeah, on Max.
- 56:13Speaker 1: Got canceled after season four. Yep, I like that. I
- 56:17Speaker 1: like that too.
- 56:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 56:18Speaker 5: You got to see Red Hood. You got to see
- 56:20Speaker 5: all the Robins all together. That was pretty awesome. But
- 56:24Speaker 5: I will say this. Nemesis is better than this season.
- 56:28Speaker 4: That's rough.
- 56:30Speaker 1: I agree. That's a bold statement.
- 56:33Speaker 4: Perhaps we judged Nemesis too harshly.
- 56:38Speaker 5: Perhaps the judge of the Enterprise would be too harsh.
- 56:41Speaker 5: At least they explained it. It actually was a better writing.
- 56:45Speaker 4: What was your favorite part of this episode? Did you
- 56:47Speaker 4: have a favorite part?
- 56:50Speaker 5: I really didn't have a favorite part. I liked the
- 56:52Speaker 5: dragons thing, but I kept thinking dragons can breathe in
- 56:55Speaker 5: fire and space.
- 56:58Speaker 3: Can they fly in space? They have wings. Wings work
- 57:03Speaker 3: with aerodynamics.
- 57:05Speaker 1: They're magic. Because you notice that fake Pike and Spock's
- 57:11Speaker 1: magic worked on the ship.
- 57:16Speaker 5: I kept thinking, is this Dungeons and Dragons, City of Thieves.
- 57:20Speaker 5: That's what I kept thinking. Chris Pine was in that movie,
- 57:24Speaker 5: so I kept thinking.
- 57:25Speaker 4: Dungeons and Dragons.
- 57:28Speaker 1: Sure felt like that.
- 57:31Speaker 5: They might as well do a cartoon episode, like Lower
- 57:33Speaker 5: Decks style, because they were cartoons before.
- 57:36Speaker 4: Yeah, they might as well.
- 57:37Speaker 5: Did they even explain how they came back from being cartoons?
- 57:40Speaker 4: No, it just was a thing.
- 57:42Speaker 5: That's what I kept wondering throughout the whole crossover. How
- 57:44Speaker 5: did they come back as humans again?
- 57:47Speaker 1: Reality. The drug war off that they were on?
- 57:51Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, maybe.
- 57:52Speaker 5: See, that would have been a good full episode instead
- 57:54Speaker 5: of this.
- 57:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 57:56Speaker 4: I see Jasmine nodding to that. He's like, yep, totally
- 57:59Speaker 4: would have been.
- 58:01Speaker 3: Yep.
- 58:02Speaker 1: Are you looking forward to next week's episode?
- 58:04Speaker 3: I hope so.
- 58:04Speaker 4: Or do you just want it to end?
- 58:06Speaker 5: I'm just ready for this to end. Make it stop.
- 58:10Speaker 5: Make it stop. I'm going to re-watch Lanterns just to
- 58:13Speaker 5: forget about this.
- 58:13Speaker 4: Yeah, I was going to say, are you watching Lanterns?
- 58:15Speaker 4: Because that's pretty great.
- 58:16Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I've watched Strange New Worlds, and then
- 58:21Speaker 5: I'll watch the new episode of The Lanterns, just so
- 58:23Speaker 5: I can recover from whatever terrible episode we're watching.
- 58:26Speaker 4: Dude, I'm looking forward to Lanterns tonight. I'm so excited.
- 58:28Speaker 5: How many episodes in this season?
- 58:29Speaker 4: Three more. We're almost done.
- 58:31Speaker 5: Oh, man. Each episode just gets better and better and better.
- 58:35Speaker 5: Star Trek needs to learn from this.
- 58:36Speaker 4: I was thinking about it. If you were going to
- 58:40Speaker 4: reboot Star Trek, because that's clearly what they're going to
- 58:42Speaker 4: have to do.
- 58:42Speaker 3: At this point.
- 58:43Speaker 5: Again, no.
- 58:44Speaker 4: Yeah what do you what are you inspired by are
- 58:46Speaker 4: you inspired by old trek are you listening to that.
- 58:48Speaker 5: My my thought about old trek see i okay.
- 58:51Speaker 4: I think that's that's the gut but i think really
- 58:55Speaker 4: you got to be inspired by black mirror because black
- 58:59Speaker 4: mirror did all sorts of really interesting stories that had
- 59:02Speaker 4: all sorts of different like uh philosophical and ethical questions
- 59:08Speaker 4: and so i think black mirror needs to be your inspiration.
- 59:13Speaker 5: I've never seen TOS all the way through. I've only
- 59:15Speaker 5: got a handful of favorite episodes. Since we finished Starfleet Academy,
- 59:20Speaker 5: about to finish this season, I'm almost willing to torture
- 59:22Speaker 5: myself through TOS.
- 59:24Speaker 4: Yeah, there you go.
- 59:25Speaker 5: I mean, why not at this point?
- 59:27Speaker 4: Couldn't be any worse.
- 59:28Speaker 1: Yeah, we're still like halfway through season two. We haven't
- 59:31Speaker 1: watched an episode in like six months.
- 59:33Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 59:35Speaker 5: I get to the gore episode. I get to the
- 59:39Speaker 5: gore episode and I'm just like skit, skit, skit, skit, skit.
- 59:42Speaker 5: Tomorrow's going to be fine. Yeah, that's just my two cents.
- 59:48Speaker 3: Okay.
- 59:49Speaker 4: Well, thanks for being here, Jacob.
- 59:51Speaker 1: Yeah, thanks, Jacob.
- 59:53Speaker 5: Good to see you.
- 59:54Speaker 1: Yeah, you too, buddy.
- 59:55Speaker 3: All right.
- 59:56Speaker 4: We also got Chaz who's on the line back in
- 59:58Speaker 4: the Celestial Temple once again. There he is. Yeah, it's real.
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: It's real.
- 1:00:03Speaker 6: They brought back Benny Russell for us.
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: Did you hear the heartbeat? What did you think of
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: the episode?
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: Oh, man.
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:00:13Speaker 6: It took me a few tries.
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: Oh, really? That bad?
- 1:00:17Speaker 6: Well, I watched it. I had it playing, but I
- 1:00:20Speaker 6: played on my phone. And so I completely missed the
- 1:00:24Speaker 6: middle plot, like what happened. So we played it last
- 1:00:27Speaker 6: night and I was like, oh, okay. That's why Kirk was.
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: It's tough to get through it sometimes because you see
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: all of these little different colored people need to get
- 1:00:40Speaker 3: on these different colored buses and you have to put
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: them on the bus in the right order. And if
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: you don't put them on the bus in the right order,
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: in the end, some people don't get on the bus
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: and then they can't get to the place that they
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: need to go and you lose.
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: So, I mean.
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: What's the guy going to do?
- 1:00:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:00:58Speaker 6: I was playing Star Trek Fleet Command. I was doing
- 1:01:02Speaker 6: something Star Trek in the meantime.
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: Sorry. All little people need to get on the correct
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: color show.
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: I'm crushing candy.
- 1:01:09Speaker 6: You're crushing candy.
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: I'm about to crush an omelet upstairs. That's what that
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: text was.
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: I smell one being cooked right now.
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: This show is cooked. I'm smelling that.
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: Worst episode ever. Yeah.
- 1:01:27Speaker 6: Well, what was it? There was the episode where the
- 1:01:31Speaker 6: doctor goes to pay a wolf, right? It was like heroes.
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: What is it? Oh, yeah.
- 1:01:37Speaker 6: Heroes and demons on the first season of Voyager.
- 1:01:41Speaker 4: Yep.
- 1:01:42Speaker 6: And, you know, that one. It made sense because Harry
- 1:01:45Speaker 6: Kim's Law and then they got to act out Beowulf
- 1:01:48Speaker 6: and all that. And this is what the whole episode
- 1:01:50Speaker 6: kind of reminded me of.
- 1:01:51Speaker 4: Yeah, but that's the problem.
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: They don't have a holodeck, so they don't have a
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: basis for these stories.
- 1:01:56Speaker 6: And that's the thing is they want to play on
- 1:01:58Speaker 6: the holodeck, but the problem is they did a prequel
- 1:02:00Speaker 6: and they're in the wrong era. And they need to
- 1:02:02Speaker 6: quit doing prequels.
- 1:02:04Speaker 4: But they're in Shackleton Canyon. They can do whatever the
- 1:02:07Speaker 4: hell they want. They can make a proto-holodeck. They did that.
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: They did that already.
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: Yeah, but then they boxed it up and put it
- 1:02:15Speaker 3: in the closet.
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: Yes, exactly.
- 1:02:17Speaker 6: Then they boxed it up and put it in the closet.
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: Also, wasn't there a Discovery episode where they showed them
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: on a holodeck?
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: Yeah, doing training.
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: They showed the Enterprise crew on the holodeck training. Okay.
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:02:32Speaker 6: But they made that archaic, though. It made more sense
- 1:02:35Speaker 6: on that one, I thought.
- 1:02:36Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: They didn't make it.
- 1:02:37Speaker 6: Where you could play out as characters, as D & D,
- 1:02:41Speaker 6: or whatever.
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: Jacob wants to know if any of you all play
- 1:02:43Speaker 4: Star Trek Online.
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: I have a lifetime membership that I haven't logged into
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: in about 15 years.
- 1:02:49Speaker 4: There you go.
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: At some point, I... Your character's just standing in the start.
- 1:02:54Speaker 6: It's like, go.
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: It's been so long. It's been so long. If I
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: logged in right now, my characters would... You know, sometimes
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: in those games, when they update the character... creation yeah
- 1:03:07Speaker 3: matrix and then you log in it's like everything's all
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: weird yeah like yeah so my guy.
- 1:03:13Speaker 6: Or your account your account's been scrubbed you don't exist
- 1:03:16Speaker 6: you have to put in a whole new password and
- 1:03:18Speaker 6: everything perhaps you've been idle too long so yeah sometimes
- 1:03:23Speaker 6: they do that.
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: Too yeah but i'll log in and it'll look crazy
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: it'll be like a klingon wearing a skirt or something
- 1:03:28Speaker 3: yeah oh wait yeah no never mind never mind i
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: was gonna say that's totally normal you got jaded now so.
- 1:03:36Speaker 4: So, Jasmine, are you watching Lanterns?
- 1:03:39Speaker 6: Yes, I'm watching Lanterns. Last week was better. We didn't
- 1:03:42Speaker 6: paint anybody naked, you know.
- 1:03:45Speaker 4: Yeah, I would say it was worse because we didn't
- 1:03:47Speaker 4: paint anybody naked. Are you going to get the Guile
- 1:03:53Speaker 4: popcorn bucket?
- 1:03:55Speaker 6: Oh, man, that popcorn bucket looks pretty interesting.
- 1:03:57Speaker 4: You guys see this? What's that? The Street Fighter popcorn
- 1:04:01Speaker 4: bucket that looks like Guile's hair?
- 1:04:04Speaker 6: What you do is you have your wife sit in
- 1:04:05Speaker 6: front of you and you can eat the popcorn off
- 1:04:07Speaker 6: her head.
- 1:04:09Speaker 4: How are you going to get her to wear that?
- 1:04:11Speaker 4: That's more of my question. We're going to go see
- 1:04:14Speaker 4: Street Fighter 2 in the theater.
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: And you're wearing a popcorn bucket on your head?
- 1:04:19Speaker 4: That's right. You're wearing a popcorn bucket on your head.
- 1:04:24Speaker 6: The funny thing is she probably would do that.
- 1:04:27Speaker 4: Oh, that's great. That's great.
- 1:04:30Speaker 6: Okay and uh one good movie in the theater is
- 1:04:33Speaker 6: uh resident evil yeah i've heard good things yes see
- 1:04:36Speaker 6: they took what they did the writer he didn't like
- 1:04:41Speaker 6: base it really off the video game like the video
- 1:04:43Speaker 6: game characters he just based it off a character going
- 1:04:46Speaker 6: through the city when everything happened you know when the
- 1:04:49Speaker 6: outbreak goes to right right so that's what they almost
- 1:04:53Speaker 6: needed to do to star trek you know maybe i
- 1:04:56Speaker 6: don't know just change it up a bit change the
- 1:04:58Speaker 6: formula I don't know. Somehow they got to bring in
- 1:05:02Speaker 6: the younger crowd because the Gen X, Gen Z, nobody's
- 1:05:08Speaker 6: watching it in that generation. They're talking about the Star
- 1:05:13Speaker 6: Trek Las Vegas. Everybody was old there. There was no
- 1:05:16Speaker 6: new fans. Everybody was at 40 and up.
- 1:05:20Speaker 4: Some franchises, they grow out. You're not seeing young Speed
- 1:05:27Speaker 4: Racer fans out there right now.
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: No.
- 1:05:30Speaker 4: You know it's just it's a different time.
- 1:05:32Speaker 6: Yeah it's like the franchise is slowly dying but they
- 1:05:37Speaker 6: need to figure out how to bring in the younger
- 1:05:39Speaker 6: crowd yeah i mean they had the younger crowd when
- 1:05:42Speaker 6: they rebooted the movies back in 09 but they waited
- 1:05:47Speaker 6: too long you know producing them like it took what
- 1:05:51Speaker 6: to 2012 for the sequel and then 2016 for the
- 1:05:54Speaker 6: third one and then we waited to discovery and that
- 1:05:58Speaker 6: it was 2017 and nobody latched on after that.
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: Dan has mentioned this before and I think he's right.
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: You know, maybe this franchise needs to die so that
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: later on it can be reborn.
- 1:06:09Speaker 5: Resurrected.
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: I don't think I said die. I think rest.
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: You didn't say die, but you said it needs to
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: go away.
- 1:06:17Speaker 6: Find a good showrunner in another decade. Somebody that's fine.
- 1:06:21Speaker 4: I'll do it.
- 1:06:22Speaker 6: No, that'd be awesome.
- 1:06:24Speaker 4: Please.
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:06:26Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: When you become a screenwriter and you're doing movies, remember us.
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: Maybe a little story by credit would be nice. We
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: can help you.
- 1:06:37Speaker 6: In 10 years, you could either write it with AI
- 1:06:40Speaker 6: or the AI would already kill this.
- 1:06:41Speaker 4: I'll bring Dan to be my security consultant. You'd be
- 1:06:47Speaker 4: surprised how many trucks you need, so I'll bring Scott
- 1:06:49Speaker 4: in to help us move.
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: Gear and everything.
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: I can be in charge of transportation.
- 1:06:55Speaker 4: There's a lot of semis. You need to move things
- 1:06:58Speaker 4: and yeah so as.
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: Long as i get access to the catered food i'm good.
- 1:07:05Speaker 4: You would oh yeah scott or uh jacob makes a
- 1:07:07Speaker 4: good point we've got skynet around the corner yeah they're
- 1:07:11Speaker 4: gonna kill us in the next 6 to 12 months so.
- 1:07:13Speaker 3: So speaking of scott's food truck uh i'm gonna let
- 1:07:17Speaker 3: you all go oh yeah yeah.
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: Yeah i think we're just about i think we're beating
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: a dead i forget he's an.
