- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Thursday, it's the
- 0:168th of May and you have tapped on play and voila, here I am so
- 0:21that you and me, if we can continue our journey in God's
- 0:25Word, not our journey through God's word because we're not
- 0:27actually going to reach the end and say ha, done.
- 0:30Now this is daily in God's Word. And today is a bit of a treat.
- 0:34Today we are going to open up a new book of the Bible.
- 0:38Today we're going to begin reading through the book of
- 0:41Hebrews. And this is not, as one of the
- 0:45classmates of one of my sons said many years ago, New
- 0:48Zealander greeting Hebrews. Sorry, it's really hard to
- 0:53unhear that once you once you've heard that, No, this is an
- 0:57incredible book. We don't know a huge amount of
- 0:59the context of this book. Biblical scholars are pretty
- 1:02much settled in the fact that we don't know who this is written
- 1:06by. We don't know when it was
- 1:07written. We're not in fact, sure who is
- 1:09written to. There's some compelling
- 1:11arguments this way and that. But overall, the thing that we
- 1:14do know about this book is that it's contents are bang on the
- 1:18money. Hebrews creates this really
- 1:22compelling argument that says everything that we have in Jesus
- 1:27is so worth the cost of following him.
- 1:31And in fact, what this book does is it uses a lot of the Old
- 1:35Testament language and imagery as it pulls it apart to really
- 1:40unpack the full richness and meaning of what Jesus has
- 1:45achieved for us through his death and resurrection.
- 1:48So there might be language of the Old Testament scattered
- 1:51throughout this book, but boy, oh boy, this is talking to you,
- 1:54my friend, so that you can see the full potency of what Jesus
- 1:58has achieved for you. So let us read together this
- 2:02treat, this book of Hebrews starting in chapter 1.
- 2:16Long ago God spoke many times in many ways to our ancestors
- 2:22through the prophets, and now in these final days He has spoken
- 2:26to us through His Son. God promised everything to the
- 2:30sun as an inheritance, and through the sun He created the
- 2:35universe. The sun radiates God's own glory
- 2:39and expresses the very character of God, and He sustains
- 2:44everything by the mighty power of His command.
- 2:48When He had cleansed us from our sins, He sat down in the place
- 2:54of honour at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven.
- 2:59This shows that the Son is far greater than the angels, just as
- 3:03the name God gave Him is greater than their names.
- 3:08For God never said to any Angel what He said to Jesus.
- 3:12You are my Son to day I have become your Father.
- 3:17God also said I will be His Father and he will be my Son.
- 3:25And when he brought his supreme Son into the world, God said let
- 3:30all of God's angels worship him. Regarding the angels, he said He
- 3:36sends his angels like the winds, His servants like flames of
- 3:41fire. But to the Son he says, Your
- 3:46throne, O God, endures forever and ever.
- 3:50You rule with a sceptre of justice.
- 3:53You love justice and hate evil. Therefore, O God, your God has
- 3:59anointed you, pouring out the oil of joy on you more than on
- 4:04anyone else. He also says to the Son, In the
- 4:10beginning, Lord, you laid the foundation of the earth and made
- 4:15the heavens with your hands. They will perish, but you remain
- 4:20forever. They will wear out like old
- 4:23clothing. You will fold them up like a
- 4:26cloak and discard them like old clothing, but you are always the
- 4:32same. You will live forever.
- 4:37And God never said to any of the angels, Sit in the place of
- 4:42honour at my right hand, until I humble your enemies, making them
- 4:47a footstool under your feet. Therefore, angels are only
- 4:54servants, spirits sent to care for people who will inherit
- 4:59salvation. Jesus, you are incredible.
- 5:13You are our Saviour, so personal, so intimate, right
- 5:17here with us in your spirit, but at the same time in you is all
- 5:24of the glory and power of the God of the universe, Jesus.
- 5:30It's through you that the universe was created.
- 5:34You radiate all of God's glory, and you are the very character
- 5:39of God, and everything in this universe is sustained through
- 5:45you and your mighty power. Wow, oh we just lift you up and
- 5:53we worship you because you are incredible.
- 5:57Let us never forget that as well as being our friend, standing
- 6:03beside us with your arms around us, you are also a powerful God
- 6:10Almighty. Oh, and so we just praise you,
- 6:14our wonderful Saviour. And we just pray that as we read
- 6:18the book of Hebrews, as this book unfolds and explains about
- 6:23your majesty and all that you've done for us, that these words
- 6:27can seep deep into us. And we can know for sure that
- 6:32you are Lord, not only of the universe, but also of each one
- 6:38of us. And we pray this all in your
- 6:41mighty and wonderful name, Jesus, Amen.
