- 0:14Hello, welcome back to the Easy Double Podcast episode 22.
- 0:18I'm joined in All Green for Island by Owen Smith.
- 0:23Must be a big day in Ireland today.
- 0:25Something going on? Yeah, my local team are in All
- 0:29Ireland final, which is, it's very unusual because we are
- 0:33normally very, very bad. But yeah, we're in All Ireland
- 0:35final today. So the whole county will be up
- 0:38in Dublin to Washington play. So I'm heading after this.
- 0:41It's exciting. Sounds like a big Sunday.
- 0:43Any Guinness line though, I'm sure there'll be lots for the
- 0:46community like. There'll be lots, there'll be
- 0:48plenty of Guinness, Drake, but not on my, not on my behalf.
- 0:53Have you, have you ever been able to successfully?
- 0:56Well, I'll welcome Dean before I go into this because I'm going
- 0:58to ask him as well. Welcome to the pod, Dean.
- 1:01How are you doing? Yeah, well, thanks mate.
- 1:03How are you doing? Yeah, I'm very well.
- 1:05Thanks. So I was just going to ask, has
- 1:07anyone ever successfully split the G on a Guinness?
- 1:11I can like confidently say I've had like 3 Guinness in my whole
- 1:14life. It's probably like two more than
- 1:16me. And yeah, I've never split the
- 1:20GI. Don't like it.
- 1:21I don't know how people actually drink it.
- 1:23But no, I've never split the. GI think the game of doing that
- 1:28might be the only way I'd be drinking it, to be honest,
- 1:32because yeah, I feel like you're chewing on it rather than
- 1:34drinking it. So I'm not a huge fan but.
- 1:36That's potentially why we're running instead of talking about
- 1:40running on a Sunday Avo evening rather than at the pub.
- 1:44I can appreciate people drink, like maybe have one because I
- 1:48don't know, whatever, but then like the people who drink it all
- 1:51day and all night, like it's got some stomachs on them.
- 1:55There's a thing, well, if you put like a drop of Ripena in it,
- 1:59it actually tastes like all right, but it's like totally
- 2:02frowned upon. But like, there's a thing where
- 2:04like, there's like Guinness shit and like the day after you drink
- 2:08a load of Guinness, it's just, it's not good.
- 2:11There's a there's an Instagram page called Shit London Guinness
- 2:14and when people get poured an awful pints of Guinness they
- 2:18they send them in and this page reposts it and tags the pub
- 2:21where it's been poured. So it's basically the whole of
- 2:24London. Yeah, anyway, we have a
- 2:29ridiculously large agenda, so spending 5 minutes speaking
- 2:32about Guinness isn't the best way to start, but here we are.
- 2:36We've been listening to some of the feedback about the audio
- 2:38quality. We tried to make some steps to
- 2:42correct it. But yeah, you'll have to see how
- 2:45we get on because it might be a work in progress.
- 2:47But hopefully you can understand us at least and you can stick
- 2:50with us because there is a big episode coming.
- 2:54So just to go over it, we've got running news with meets, a
- 2:58couple of meets in Ireland actually.
- 3:00Owen raced at 1:00 and then there was also some Australians
- 3:02there too. We've got Monaco Diamond League
- 3:05where there was a couple of Australian records going down
- 3:08and and there was a couple of meets in the US as well, so
- 3:11plenty to talk about there. We'll have the usual training
- 3:14week with Owen's race included a couple of other interesting
- 3:18talking points including a contract on the table for Seth
- 3:22O'Donnell and things going on with the London Diamond League
- 3:27start lists, which is next week. Hopefully we'll have time for
- 3:30YouTube Diaries. Also.
- 3:33Hopefully a double trouble will come up at the end and we've got
- 3:35a couple of listener questions. So plenty to be cracking on with
- 3:40boys. I did want to mention that last
- 3:45week we kind of, I alluded to the fact that I can't remember
- 3:48exactly what I said, that we were trying to working on
- 3:51something interesting for the pod where maybe we're going to
- 3:54create a bit of a community space for the listeners to get
- 3:57involved and kind of everyone can interact and share their own
- 4:01opinions and network, I guess like that.
- 4:04So yeah, just to say that this is in the works and you may have
- 4:08seen us allude to something on the Instagram Story the other
- 4:12day, a bit of a teaser with a slightly different version of
- 4:14the logo. So keep your eyes peeled on the
- 4:17Instagram because that's where the updates are going first,
- 4:20which is easy double pod in case you don't already follow, and we
- 4:24will follow you back because we're nice like that.
- 4:28As seen on Grant Fisher's Instagram during the week,
- 4:32because he ran the mile last week and he ran 348.
- 4:36Maybe he posted that. He's now the second person ever,
- 4:41behind only Kajalcha to go a sub 350 in the mile, sub 30 in
- 4:46minutes in the 5K, and sub 27 in the 10K.
- 4:50And he put a pile on a pole to see which is the most difficult.
- 4:54So what would you boys say on that one?
- 4:58That is so tough. Like they are all incredibly
- 5:02hard and what has been done least I feel like so many people
- 5:07have broken 13 for the 527 for the 10.
- 5:12Have too many people broken 27 for the 10?
- 5:17I think so. I just think the mile is such a
- 5:20hard distance and like the four minute barrier is massive and
- 5:23like to go 10 seconds under that.
- 5:25Like I'd nearly say 350 miles just come from me because I have
- 5:28no faster fibers in my body whatsoever.
- 5:31I'm in the Jake card horse sort of club.
- 5:34So yeah, I'd probably go 350 for the mile, you guys.
- 5:39In terms of what's most difficult or most?
- 5:43Impressive. Yeah, probably.
- 5:46I think, I think, I think the same.
- 5:48I mean, they're all pretty amazing.
- 5:50What like no Aussie has ever run under 27 minutes, while a few
- 5:56have run under 13 and there's a few guys under 350, right?
- 6:00So, you know, maybe the first Australian to go onto 27 would
- 6:05be a pretty special barrier to, but I think the toughest one
- 6:09probably is. The world record, though, is
- 6:11343, isn't it? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:14Just or the other kid. El Guruge still isn't.
- 6:16It El guruge, yeah. Funnily enough someone just
- 6:19shared Stefan actually shared a video of the last lap of that
- 6:23mile weirdly on Instagram before and I was watching it and
- 6:26there's actually two of them that go to the line.
- 6:28The guy who finished his second is 2/10 behind them maybe and it
- 6:33still that was from 99 still stands today.
- 6:35Some of those races when they're like, when there is a bit of
- 6:38competition that sort of gets the most out of, you know, like
- 6:40some of them where they're just straight time trials, if you're
- 6:42not having your day, it's sort of, God, it must be hard.
- 6:46I, I reckon that the, the 10K is the hardest there.
- 6:50And I did because I knew I was going to ask you, is this a
- 6:53little bit of reading into it? And in terms of those barriers,
- 6:56the 10K has the fewest amount of people who've broken 27.
- 7:01So there's 89 for the five KA, 148 have broken 13, and for the
- 7:06mile 103 have broken the 3:50. So data says that it's the 10K,
- 7:13but obviously that could be biased based on like how many
- 7:16people are running these races because we know there's fewer 10
- 7:20KS than 5 KS on the track. And this is based on the track.
- 7:24Yeah. Yeah, 20 What's 25 laps of the
- 7:27track? 10K is it?
- 7:28Yeah. Yeah, they're not.
- 7:29It's not, It's not that well run.
- 7:32And perhaps the miles may be understated as well, because if
- 7:35you did the 1500 meter equivalent to the conversion to
- 7:38the mile, there would be a lot more.
- 7:41And for what it's worth, Fisher is actually ranked highest
- 7:45amongst the 10K compared to the other two.
- 7:48But I mean that's no really no surprise because he is more of a
- 7:51distance guy isn't he? So it's it's bizarre that he's
- 7:53broken that 350 barrier, to be fair, right.
- 7:57Then moving on to the results, the main one that we've had this
- 8:01week was the Monaco Diamond League.
- 8:03And I know we kind of put a lot of hype into the men's 800 based
- 8:07on the field. And I guess it did live up to it
- 8:12in the sense that Emmanuel Wanjani, who's the Kenyan guy
- 8:15who's been in formal year, he's only 20 years old.
- 8:19He won in a 141.44, which was a meet record and a world lead
- 8:25time this year. But it didn't quite get the the
- 8:28world record barrier that perhaps we're theorizing might
- 8:31go. Josh Howey, the American guy was
- 8:34in second in 142.01 and Sujathi, the Algerian in 3rd in a 142.2.
- 8:42But then perhaps most impressively for a lot of our
- 8:45listeners, Pete Ball was in fourth in a new Australian
- 8:49record in 142.55, which lowers his own record.
- 8:54And it was by actually like 1.3 seconds as well.
- 8:57So it's like a massive jump. So yeah, what what do you think
- 9:01about this one? What is the world record for
- 9:03800? Is it like 40.9 or something?
- 9:06Yeah, I think so. It's still from 2012, isn't it?
- 9:10From the Olympics? Rhodesia.
- 9:12In the Olympic, I think. Is that right?
- 9:14That super fast Olympic final. Like you'd presume it's going to
- 9:17be close to going down outcome like Tokyo like.
- 9:21Yeah. I mean, that's literally like
- 9:23that's, yeah. And Joshua, that's all.
- 9:25But Joshua came out of nowhere this year and there's a 142 guy.
- 9:28Yeah, remember when he ran maybe the American record like 6
- 9:31months ago or something during the indoor season?
- 9:34And because he was almost that unknown, there was like question
- 9:37marks about like, oh shit, how like legit is this guy?
- 9:40Where's he come from? But he's certainly like backed
- 9:43it up since in the outdoor track.
- 9:45Peter Ball, he'll be chuffed to that as well.
- 9:48Those times are just so fast, like I think people like.
- 9:52Around that time when he ran like 144 like dead or
- 9:56thereabouts and like the Olympics was when he when they
- 9:59previously had the record. That's like good for 10th in
- 10:01that race. On the weekend, but those times
- 10:04are just the 8 hundreds just evolved a lot in the last what,
- 10:07five years where just everyone's just running so fast.
- 10:10And it's the same with like the 1500 meters, like it's like the
- 10:13Ingebritt Ingebritton effect, you know, like everyone, because
- 10:17he runs so fast now everyone's trying to keep up with him and
- 10:20now they're running fast. And now these qualifying, I
- 10:22think these qualifying times are so fast as well.
- 10:24So it's like everyone's focusing on not only their finishing kick
- 10:29but also just running quick races.
- 10:31So I don't know it was. It was pretty cool.
- 10:34I think looking at the qualifying time for the 800
- 10:36there, I mean like compared to the others, lots of the
- 10:39qualifiers are like insanely hard to get, aren't they?
- 10:42But like these lads and making the qualifying time look soft
- 10:45because it's 144.5 and as you've just suggested, they're the top
- 10:50ten in this race were below that.
- 10:53But it is literally like the I think maybe there was 8th
- 10:58Olympic finalists in this race or something like that.
- 11:00So there's no surprise. Did you see that one young you
- 11:03though? He just like he went by himself
- 11:06and then Josh how he kind of like closed a little bit, but
- 11:09the rest of them were kind of bunched up and I noticed and
- 11:13what I watched it back to see like kind of how people's race
- 11:16went and maybe 550 through. So like on the back straight
- 11:22before they come round on the second lap, Ball was actually
- 11:25last and then he's just out kicked like the whole field
- 11:28almost. Yeah, he judged it really,
- 11:31really well, didn't he? Sort of came up there, had like
- 11:34a bit of an inside run to finish, and then the first two
- 11:37were sort of a bit of a cut above like that.
- 11:39Josh Hoey ran pretty bravely to sort of try and go with Wan
- 11:42Yoni, I think. Did the commentators mention
- 11:45like it was really well paced? I think because they went
- 11:47through pretty much exactly what they needed to because it looked
- 11:51fast. Everyone was sort of trying to
- 11:53get out and get into position quickly, weren't they?
- 11:55It was like a hot start. Then they settled in right on
- 11:58pace. But then yeah, that Wan Yoni was
- 12:00just like he was, he just looked too good, like he just, he was
- 12:04just clear. And then it was how he was like
- 12:06trying to close the gap but sort of couldn't.
- 12:08And then the rest were all sort of racing for 3rd.
- 12:12You'd say that when you're new, you would have to be the
- 12:14favorite. Now for Tokyo, wouldn't it be
- 12:16after that? Yeah, if you're, if you're
- 12:18offering anything over what, 3? To one, you'd probably take
- 12:21that, I think, yeah. Because Marco A Roth has perhaps
- 12:25in the past been like the other guy who you'd think is the the
- 12:29top achiever then I don't know. He he didn't have a great run
- 12:32based on his own standards. And you think it does the the
- 12:36fact that he's been running some fifteens in Grand Slam as he
- 12:39changes training slightly and he's just dropped off a little
- 12:41bit. You don't know.
- 12:42Moving on to the women's 1000 meters.
- 12:45So this was won by Nelly chapter chair in 229.77.
- 12:52In second was Anderson Wiley of the USA in 230.71.
- 12:58And then third was Jess Hall in a 230.96 in a new Australian
- 13:03record. I think she takes that back from
- 13:07Abby Caldwell, doesn't she? Yeah.
- 13:08Did you watch this race as well, Ron?
- 13:10Did you watch the Timely? Yeah, it was.
- 13:13They went through pretty quickly here, didn't they?
- 13:16Yeah, there was a like a Aussie, fellow Aussie was doing the
- 13:19pacemaking, weren't they? And she was sort of almost
- 13:21getting trampled, I think because they were all trying to,
- 13:23they were all pretty eager early, but I think maybe a bit
- 13:27too fast through 400 they were saying.
- 13:29Yeah, maybe one second or so they were saying, weren't they?
- 13:32But Jess was like, right there, wasn't she?
- 13:34She was keen As for it. Yeah, yeah.
- 13:36I think they went through like 400 and like 58.4 or something
- 13:40like that, which I think if you're trying to run 2. 30 That
- 13:43was sort of. Suggesting that maybe you run
- 13:45that pretty evenly. Like I know in an 800 I was
- 13:48thinking about this, but like in an 800 you positive split, don't
- 13:51you? So you run your first lap
- 13:53quicker than your second lap, but then in a 15, maybe it's you
- 13:56sort of trying to close quickly, like get out fast, settle and
- 13:59then close quickly. So I was wondering what the
- 14:01right pacing strategy is for 1000 meters.
- 14:04And maybe it's pretty even, but I think now sort of suggesting
- 14:07maybe a 58.4 was maybe a bit too fast.
- 14:10And it seemed like it was based on the fact that they didn't
- 14:13hold that, you know, they slowed.
- 14:15Yeah, the last 200 they lost a bit of time, didn't they?
- 14:18The the 800 split in itself was 158.4.
- 14:22So if you think about some of the women's 800 races, like
- 14:26largely if you're running 158, you win in the race and then
- 14:29they've ran on for another 200 meters after that, so.
- 14:33Yeah, it's brutal. But Congrats suggests on the on
- 14:35the new record. You'd wonder why faced if your a
- 14:38gun wasn't in it. Yeah, Is it just too short
- 14:41backup from the world recording? Was it Eugene or whatever last
- 14:44week? Because she she sort of had that
- 14:47what breaking the the mall like she sort of had a few big weeks.
- 14:51Maybe it was one too many, but she'd be in she.
- 14:54She wins that, surely. Yeah, she's got as well.
- 14:58She's got the the world lead this time this year already.
- 15:02So maybe the fact that she's already ran like a good 1K this
- 15:05year, she's not really incentivized to do another.
- 15:08You don't know, but yeah, you'd imagine she wants to cash in on
- 15:11this, the shape that she's in, which I think it might be
- 15:15further down in the agenda. But she's confirmed that she's
- 15:18running a 3000 in C Elsa or something in a couple of weeks.
- 15:24So maybe it's funny because we said about that head to head
- 15:27between her and Chibet over 3K. Maybe we'll get to see it there.
- 15:31What happened to Mary Maura that she came last?
- 15:33Well, like a long way. Yeah, I don't know.
- 15:35She was sort of in the race and the commentators mentioned she
- 15:38sort of just like part way through started fighting early,
- 15:40I think. Yeah, I don't know, just yeah,
- 15:44out of form perhaps. I'm not sure there's.
- 15:46A couple of bad ones in a row for her, isn't it?
- 15:49Sarah, someone from Sarah Lillian, though, 233.
- 15:52Yeah, that's fine. 3 seconds off Jess all.
- 15:56Yeah, she's been having a call to be too fair.
- 15:58Yeah, and good to be getting a start in the Monaco like Diamond
- 16:02League. Pretty cool.
- 16:03Yeah, she's like leveled up this year.
- 16:04Yeah, because she was, I think maybe the last few seasons, some
- 16:07of those European races like pacing, some of these diamond
- 16:10leagues. So it's cool to see the
- 16:11progression. Next we had a men's 5000 meters.
- 16:15So there's whispers of a world record attempt here and
- 16:19obviously the guy to take it up was Yarmouth Kajalche, the big,
- 16:24tall Ethiopian, and he's ended up winning in 1249.46 from the
- 16:30homegrown athlete, the French guy, Jimmy Gracia, who's I think
- 16:34European record holder on the 5K in the road.
- 16:37I was going to say in the track, but the Swedish guy, I'm
- 16:41Grenous, isn't he? And then Beilu of Bahrain was
- 16:45third and 1253.51. So weird the way we we get so
- 16:51used to seeing so many under 13 minutes now.
- 16:55Like in that race there's 123456 like 8 people under 13.
- 17:01It's just crazy. Yeah, and the race felt like a
- 17:03bit of a disappointment, like, and it was Yeah, that's, that's
- 17:08the standard I think of the 5K at the minute, like because
- 17:11Kajolsa is sort of just I, I, I feel like his best chance of
- 17:15winning because he's, he sort of notoriously struggles in those
- 17:18major championships. Like he say he seems to he wins
- 17:21all these diamond leagues and then it gets to like a made the
- 17:25the end of season championship and he like doesn't even feature
- 17:30in the podium. But they're often not not run
- 17:33this way. Like I feel like the best chance
- 17:35he has is just to take take everyone to this point where
- 17:38they can't. Like his ability is just to push
- 17:41past what is a sustainable 5K pace and then keep lapping like
- 17:45he because he blows up with like one to two laps to go, but no
- 17:47one is close to him. Like he's literally like half a
- 17:50half the straight away from everyone.
- 17:51It holds on I I wonder if if he had the if he did that in a in
- 17:56one of those championships, he might win it.
- 17:58You have to give him kudos. Like when you see the the pain
- 18:00that he's clearly in, like and it's like 03 laps to go and
- 18:04you're like. Oh my God.
- 18:05Such a long ways to go like. Yeah, and he just, and he does
- 18:10it. Every time pacemaker drops out
- 18:12he then sends it for about. Two or three.
- 18:14Laps and then he's fucked and then he's dropping like two or
- 18:18three seconds a lap and but wins and it's like, well, you know,
- 18:21like fair play to him. Like no one else is going at
- 18:23that pace. And yeah, it was set up super
- 18:25fast again. What was it?
- 18:26What were they going like 61 seconds of lap thereabouts?
- 18:30Yes, I've got 739 for the 3K splits.
- 18:34And was he? He might have even been.
- 18:36Solo by that point, wasn't he? Reckon so, yeah.
- 18:40But yeah, it was a gutsy run. Did you see the the Let's Run
- 18:44guys, some of their comments, reflections on the race?
- 18:48No, that was sort of. They were.
- 18:49They were mentioning just. So like because Ethiopia?
- 18:52Notoriously like dominates the 5K right, and we've got like the
- 18:56world champs coming up, but they were sort of saying like Gabriel
- 19:00what like is not looking that and they basically listed went
- 19:03through all of the all of the athletes and saying that none of
- 19:06The Ethiopians are looking that impressive at the minute and May
- 19:09but and then that we've got and then the US has like Grant
- 19:11Fisher, Graham blanks and Nico Young and so they're like we're
- 19:17on. They're like, look, maybe
- 19:18someone gets us, but. They're up and.
- 19:21About so I don't know, it's probably not a bad shout to be
- 19:24fair. So they're they're excited.
- 19:27That's their their early take on on things is that the US are
- 19:31well positioned to to meddle at the in the 5K.
- 19:35So they'll be praying that Jacob doesn't make his comeback still,
- 19:38I think. It's OK, just nowhere I think
- 19:40no. Caveat did that.
- 19:41Yeah, exactly. In that race, I'm going actually
- 19:45stepped off after I think it was around 3200, which I'm not sure
- 19:50what happened there, but hopefully he's not injured.
- 19:53Yeah, I did say that. Not sure.
- 19:54Just quickly to round this meet out there was we wouldn't
- 19:57usually talk about sprints too much, but it was interesting
- 20:00because Noah Lyles was back for the 200 meters and he sought
- 20:04vengeance against the Olympic champ let's Elita Bogo.
- 20:08So Lyles won in 19.88. Which was a bit of a statement
- 20:13because I don't think the wind was that good either.
- 20:15No, it's like it was a negative .9.
- 20:17Why was it a negative Headwind. Headwind.
- 20:20Yes, I'm so sure he'll be chuffed with himself there
- 20:22because that must be his opener this season.
- 20:25He's he's pulled out of a few, hasn't he?
- 20:27Yeah, why do you know why Gout Gout doesn't get a run in that?
- 20:31So he ran in the was it the Monaco's under 23 race and won
- 20:36it. But like he won that.
- 20:37And I think their their headwind was worse.
- 20:40Like I think it was like native 1.7 maybe and he won it in like
- 20:4420, like 20.2, which would have been good enough for, I don't
- 20:48know, maybe fifth or something like that in that 200.
- 20:50Like I wonder why he didn't get a start.
- 20:53Yeah, I remember listening to an interview with then if it's like
- 20:55his agent or his manager or whatever, and from how he was
- 21:00describing their plans for like a season and stuff, it sounds
- 21:03like they're trying to, like, protect them almost.
- 21:05And I guess keeping them out of these like, major races where
- 21:08there's so much attention might be part of the strategy, not
- 21:12exposing them to stuff too early.
- 21:14But yeah. Yeah, fair enough.
- 21:17Yeah, his time, I've seen a conversion with like a flat
- 21:21wind, like a neutral wind, and it was like 19.9.
- 21:25Oh wow. Yeah.
- 21:26Yeah, I did not make that much. That's huge, like 3 1/2 tenths.
- 21:32Tenths. Lastly, again, the steeple, I
- 21:34wouldn't usually comment on the steeple but it's 3000 meters
- 21:37steeple for the men and the long term best in the world guy for
- 21:42this event. Alba Carly came through with the
- 21:45win in 8/03 from a Japanese guy who was also in 803.
- 21:50But why I'm mentioning it is because how the race played out.
- 21:53It was, it was pretty mad because I assume you've seen it,
- 21:57Dean Albacali was chasing a world record.
- 21:59Bosnian almost end up losing the race.
- 22:02Yeah, yeah, he had like 2 Moroccan.
- 22:05Fellow Moroccan pacemakers set him up for a crack at the world
- 22:08record and he was on pace until he wasn't.
- 22:11And then what maybe 3 laps to go, started to tighten up.
- 22:14And then this Japanese guy sort of like leapt out of the pack
- 22:17with like maybe a lap to go, if that and just started like
- 22:22clawing him back and was making ground very quickly and overtook
- 22:25him maybe over the final back, no a bit before the final
- 22:29barrier maybe. And then Elba Kali just did what
- 22:31he needed to to get the win, even though he wasn't having the
- 22:35best day, still just made sure he got the got the win.
- 22:37And this guy ran like a Japanese national record.
- 22:40Was it like a 5 second PV or something like that?
- 22:42Yeah. So he had a good day.
- 22:46Go on. Oh, you know, we're talking
- 22:49about magical barriers. I think the magical barrier in
- 22:51the staples 8 minutes I think like that's always the yeah is
- 22:55the the magical mark, I think. I'm not surprised.
- 22:58As good as the guy the Japanese guy's run is, I'm not surprised
- 23:01he's ran a national record, because when you think of
- 23:04Japanese people, you don't think of steeplechasers, do you?
- 23:09No, no, no. I think.
- 23:13Condon. Oh, do you remember when Geordie
- 23:15Beamish maybe was it World champs where he sort of finished
- 23:18like 4th or 5th and there was a couple of Japanese behind like
- 23:22El Bakali And was it Germa? Like they were sort of out in
- 23:26front, but so they maybe occasionally like have a couple
- 23:30of decent ones. But yeah, they're not.
- 23:31You don't think of them in the same vein as you do, like the
- 23:33Marathon or the Rhodes do. Where's the American guy who
- 23:38came second in the Olympics? He was further back than the
- 23:42results that we can see there. He was like 828 or something,
- 23:45and there was a fall at one point.
- 23:47So I don't know if he was involved in it or not, but yeah.
- 23:51But this point and Kenny Rooks. Yeah, where's that Matthew
- 23:55Wilkinson chap come from? That's the first I heard of him
- 23:57to run. 8810 is pretty good. Yes, good point.
- 24:02Yeah, I don't know. There wasn't another American on
- 24:04the start line who had the BYU vest on, which wasn't Kenny
- 24:07Rook, so he well could well be from that same training group as
- 24:10well. One, because James, well, James
- 24:13Corrigan is BYU as well. He became 11 there.
- 24:16It's probably some college kids. Must be he's run like 811.
- 24:21They paid their pay base already, yeah.
- 24:24I've seen a graphic actually on that Kenny Rock.
- 24:27So he, for context, won silver in the most recent Olympics,
- 24:31didn't he? And they were comparing kind of
- 24:33like his flat track times versus like the rest of the field.
- 24:38And they just don't stack up at all.
- 24:39Like the the fact that he's been able to win a silver medal at
- 24:43the Olympics is insane because when you put them in a flat 5K
- 24:47or a flat 3K against the best in the world, he's miles off it.
- 24:52It's crazy what like a race can do for you, like the atmosphere
- 24:56and just how it changes everything.
- 24:59Which we will get to. In in the day and age where like
- 25:07everything's kind of black and white, like the fastest person
- 25:09wins. You need those type of stories
- 25:11though, don't you? Like it's good for the sport.
- 25:13Yeah, absolutely. So moving on from Monaco and
- 25:18going to Cork City on Wednesday night in the week.
- 25:23First up there was a women's 3K which was won by the British
- 25:27athlete Megan Keith in 838, which is rity damn quick.
- 25:32There was an American second Ellen Fulton in 842 and then a
- 25:36New Zealander third, Kimberly May in 845.
- 25:40There was 2 Australians further down the field in 6th and 7th,
- 25:43Holly Campbell and Kara Fame Ryan.
- 25:46They each run 852 and 854. There was a men's.
- 25:51I'm sorry. Gone with the women's race you
- 25:54won Megan Keith, that she actually broke the meet record,
- 25:58which was held by Sonya O'Sullivan.
- 26:00So, umm, yeah. She like with like AK to go.
- 26:05She just went for home and she just opened up a massive gap.
- 26:08So. And she like, I think she came
- 26:10last in her Olympic breaks or something like that.
- 26:12He'd like a rough two years just gone.
- 26:15And so it's great to see her back running, running super,
- 26:17super fast. And Wednesday was sort of the
- 26:20start of the Irish heat wave that has rocked us, so it was
- 26:26pretty warm as well. Did the home crowd Boo her when
- 26:28she broke Sonya's record? No, no, no, we're not that bad.
- 26:32We're not that bad. It's because she's Scottish.
- 26:36If she was full on English then she'd get booed.
- 26:41It's funny, like the English, the English fall in the middle
- 26:43of everyone's hatred. Like there's a rivalry, rivalry
- 26:46with the Welsh, rivalry with the Scottish, rivalry with the
- 26:49Irish, and all those other nations get on with each other
- 26:52fine, but everyone just seems to hate English.
- 27:01Anyway, moving on, you can tell us more about that meat because
- 27:06there was a men's three thousands as well.
- 27:08Well, there was a couple of men's three thousands, so the
- 27:12the A race with the the professional athlete team was
- 27:15won by a British guy again Henry Mccluckey, I think he's an
- 27:19Adidas athlete in 736 which gives him the 10th fastest all
- 27:25time UK 3000 meters I think. Was that a meet record as well,
- 27:29Owen? Yeah, yeah, I've never heard of
- 27:32this kid before either. Henry Mcloughy, have you?
- 27:35He's had a few like decent pacing jobs and stuff and like
- 27:40he's had a few GB vests but like kind of like European ones
- 27:43mainly. I don't he hasn't had like a
- 27:45major champs run yet, but yeah some run.
- 27:48Did you watch this race on? Yeah, yeah, I stayed to watch
- 27:52the I just went but left before the miles at the very end
- 27:57because the race so the event like finished at like 9 or half
- 28:02nine and the cork is like 3 hours away from my home.
- 28:05So by the time half nine hit like to drive back up and I was
- 28:09in work the next day. So I just dipped after after
- 28:12this 3K actually. And yeah, it was touch and go,
- 28:16like any of them could have won it.
- 28:17And when it was a Sprint finish in the end.
- 28:19But that Valentin soccer from Uruguay, he's another sort of 1
- 28:23to watch because he ran well in Dublin as well.
- 28:26But like when you're running like 736, like it's crazy fast.
- 28:31Like, and to even put that into more perspective like that took
- 28:34them 5K. Lads are going nearly going
- 28:36through in that Monaco Diamond League or what are they going?
- 28:39They're nearly there. Yeah.
- 28:41Would they go through 737 or 39? Yeah.
- 28:44Like it's it's crazy. And that's another good run from
- 28:48Jackson, Jackson Sharp like 738. But yeah, again, like Jeff put
- 28:53into contacts that it was very warm.
- 28:55So yeah, I'd say all them boys be happy with that.
- 28:57Yeah, what's the case split? It's like 232 or something.
- 29:01Average pace, like it's insane. And you've got Stewie Mcswain
- 29:05making his comeback as well. He finished 7th and midfield and
- 29:097:44. He was just off the pace or at
- 29:12the very start he was sort of like pushing.
- 29:14And then what, let's say 12 weeks ago, he just, yeah,
- 29:18shocked. He started fading a little bit.
- 29:21Still working on getting that full fitness back.
- 29:24Yeah. So I mean unfortunately you
- 29:28can't comment on the mile then if you didn't see it, but there
- 29:30was a mile won by an American guy, Marco Langan in 350 port
- 29:35354.59 another Uruguayan, which I don't know why this guy keeps
- 29:41coming up this year like we've commented on him a few times.
- 29:44Santiago Catroff 355.51 and then oh God, there's one of those
- 29:51Irish dodgy names again in 3rd. Oh shit, how the hell do you say
- 29:57that? Locate what's his.
- 30:01Name Louie Louie. Was it Sean Dean in the in the
- 30:09coffee shop the other day? Literally told us about that one
- 30:11as well. Louis, look, hey, he was third
- 30:16in the 356. Wait so that Santiago to trophy
- 30:20came from Monaco to Cork? He's a primer.
- 30:24That is crazy. But that Marco Langan, he
- 30:27finished so strong. I watched this on YouTube.
- 30:29He finished so strong and he was like like with 50 meters to go,
- 30:33he starts celebrating and just as he crossed the line, he sort
- 30:35of rolled his ankle and then he was running in Dublin.
- 30:38A lot of these boys, they run in the Cork and then they run up in
- 30:41Dublin as well two days after. So people were talking, might
- 30:44have been injured, but now he's, you know, they're just college
- 30:47kid. That's common God.
- 30:49There was a couple of other noticeable names in the field as
- 30:52well. So there was Callum Davis who I
- 30:55was going to know, Australian guy who finished fourth in
- 30:59356.22, Joe Wigfield of Great Britain, we've referenced him a
- 31:05few times before in fifth in the 356.46 and Matt Ramsden of WA,
- 31:12Perth in 357.26. So good to see Rambo back
- 31:17racing. But I did give Joe a message the
- 31:21night before and say there's there's a few names in that
- 31:24field for you to try and get a few scalps.
- 31:27Would you even happy with that result?
- 31:29I reckon so he's kind of like he's not quite at the level to
- 31:32be winning these races. I don't think he's still like
- 31:35kind of progressing and moving up.
- 31:37So to be able to be competitive in this field, I think is is
- 31:40great for now. But he's he's run a sub four
- 31:43mile on the road as well. He's run maybe 358 on the road.
- 31:46So he has, he is very talented like.
- 31:49Oh and actually I should give a shout out, there's a lad around
- 31:53where I live called Philip Maron and for the last like 2-3 years
- 31:58he's ran 4 flat 400.3400.1 and he got into this race here and
- 32:06he ran at 3:57. So massive, big PB and it really
- 32:10just goes to show if you stick at it and you just get into the
- 32:13right race, anything can happen. Huge breakthrough.
- 32:16Yeah, massive. Like to knock 3 seconds off and
- 32:19like he on a Saturday morning, he trains on the same track eye
- 32:22trainer. And like his coaches were saying
- 32:24that like he's he is there. Like once it was such a like big
- 32:29monkey off his back that like he wasn't just going to like just
- 32:33get under 4. He was going to like absolutely
- 32:35hammer. So when yeah, to get like 357,
- 32:39I'd like to break 4 minutes for the mile.
- 32:41It opened so many more doors for you like to get into different
- 32:44races and all. So yeah, no Philip Maron.
- 32:47Fair play. Would would you be able to do
- 32:50any sessions with him or is it like slightly just to close
- 32:53above? And when it comes to cross
- 32:56country like season, we could probably do a bit of work
- 32:58together. But at the moment like he's
- 33:02focused on 1500 like miles. So yeah, now if I try and do
- 33:07that type of training, he I just wouldn't be able to hack it.
- 33:12Like he's running sub 62nd lap there is it for the mile?
- 33:16Yeah, it's a break for 60 seconds, isn't it, I think.
- 33:19Yeah, yeah. So no, that is not me.
- 33:24There's no space for 62nd 4 hundreds in the double threshold
- 33:28life moving on then you can tell us about your race as part of
- 33:32your do you do your full week because you had a down week,
- 33:35didn't you? And you can tell us how all that
- 33:36went. We'll go to Dublin on was it
- 33:40Saturday night, the Morton Games in Dublin.
- 33:42There was a 5000 meters for the men here which was won by
- 33:46Valentin Soca of Uruguay again. So he was the guy who finished
- 33:50second in Cork in the 3000 meters.
- 33:53He ran 1318.88. In second was Matt Strangio of
- 33:59the US in 1320 and 3rd Miguel Martinez of Spain in 1321.
- 34:05So of note in this field, Owen. Further down we've got your boy
- 34:09Efrem Gede who's run 1325. We've got Sundra Mowen, the
- 34:14Norwegian marathon record holder who's run 205 in 1326.
- 34:20We've got Phil Sussman who's on the GB marathon team at the
- 34:24minute, who's run 1329, and then we've got Owens, other man from
- 34:28the YouTube Diaries section, Cormac Dalton in 1334.
- 34:33So yeah, again it was extremely warm this evening.
- 34:39The your man Soca like he's got wheels.
- 34:42He just kicked them all and Jack O'Leary who came forward, he ran
- 34:47like a an 18 second PB as well. So I think with after 2K in the
- 34:53race, he got disconnected from that lead pack and yeah, he just
- 34:57started reeling them all in and then massive, massive run.
- 35:01Like there's a massive breakthrough run for him from
- 35:031322. And from the day I heard he, I
- 35:07don't think he was happy after that race.
- 35:08I think he just stormed off. So he might have been expecting
- 35:12a little bit more. And like, Cassandra Moen, a
- 35:14marathoner, and Phil Sessman, Like, it just goes to show,
- 35:17like, you need to be able to run, like, fast to run.
- 35:22Like, if they're running a 131330, let's say, 5K, when they
- 35:27jump right back down to the marathon pace, that is going to
- 35:29feel so easy for them boys. They're just going to be
- 35:32chilling. So yeah.
- 35:35Did you hear? Do you still listen to the four
- 35:39guys, Ryan and they were talking about because Sandra Moen I
- 35:44think recently left Renato Canova to be coached by MTC,
- 35:49Nick Badot, I think. And they were talking about
- 35:52because I think like Sandra Moen does so much or had, I think
- 35:57under overdone so much like specific marathon stuff.
- 36:02And so somebody's marathon training was like really dulled
- 36:04but sort of hadn't worked on speed.
- 36:06That was sort of the guys were commenting a bit because maybe
- 36:08they'd spent some time with him. I think that was them.
- 36:11Was that right, Ron? Am I?
- 36:12Recalling this correctly. And they were.
- 36:14Saying. Yeah.
- 36:15And they were saying that he sort of got him back into a
- 36:18speed block and feels a little bit like it feels a little bit
- 36:23foreign, but it's obviously now starting to convert.
- 36:26Right, so. That's a pretty solid time.
- 36:28Like it's still not at the same time as some of these like
- 36:31speedier mile 3K type guys, but interesting to see what whatever
- 36:37Nick's got him doing is sort of helping him get his ceiling
- 36:40back. So then like you say Owen, when
- 36:42he goes back to the marathon, it will probably might set him up
- 36:46to get back towards that sort of two O 5 sort of shape because he
- 36:49sort of ran that two O 5 some years ago now.
- 36:52Yeah, I was going to say that that 1326 for him, I don't think
- 36:55it was quite APB. Maybe he's run like 22 or
- 36:58something before, but he hasn't been close to his two O 5 shape
- 37:02for a while either, has he? So this is probably like a good
- 37:05sign really. Yeah, it's pretty cool.
- 37:07And, and cool as you're getting older to know you can sort of
- 37:09get quicker again if you sort of, you know, do the specific
- 37:13training. And same with Sussman, that was
- 37:16a 16 second PB for him and a scene like through his Instagram
- 37:20and stuff, he seems to be like made-up with that.
- 37:22And he said along the lines of like track season done.
- 37:26So that suggests to me that there was like a clear objective
- 37:30to run a track season, increase the five KPB and then go and
- 37:34apply it back to the marathon. So I'm sure he'll be keen to
- 37:37jump back into a big block now. Yeah, and he's running Tokyo.
- 37:41Is he at World Champs? Assessment.
- 37:44Yeah, I actually don't know what the the rest of the squad looks
- 37:49like in terms of who's qualified.
- 37:51It should look really, because it'd be pretty interesting.
- 37:55So obviously we talk about the Australian marathon teams and
- 37:58stuff so much. We'll have to preview.
- 38:00That in the later. Yeah, well, on the yeah, maybe
- 38:04we'll, we'll go into more depth and prepare on it because it's
- 38:07worth a good chat. Do also the men's, the Morton
- 38:11games, there was a men's mile home favorite Andrew Koskaran
- 38:15took the win in 351.12. Cattle Doyle was second in
- 38:21351.26. Dara Macclenny was third in
- 38:26351.99. This was a mad field as well,
- 38:30like you've got Nick Griggs, Brian Face, Stuart Mcswain, Matt
- 38:34Ramsden, Charles Wheeler. Like the Irish is where it's at
- 38:40drawing the crowds. Guys like top five are Irish,
- 38:45all running. 3, 351-350-1351, 250-2352.
- 38:51Like the standard of running in Ireland at the moment is like,
- 38:54it's probably the best it's ever been.
- 38:55Like, did you just watch this race now?
- 38:57Like coming down the home straight, Kyle Doyle was coming
- 39:02up on Andrew Costner's shoulder and Andrew Costner kept on
- 39:05pushing them out and out and out.
- 39:06So they literally were in lane four and five coming up to the
- 39:10home straight. Yeah, it's crazy.
- 39:13But Andrew Costner had him in the end.
- 39:14Dermat Delheny. He's not even a Miller he'd be
- 39:17focusing on the 5K for, so for him to run, for him to be a 351
- 39:21miner now leading into a 5K, like it's only going to be good
- 39:26things. Nick Griggs wouldn't be a miler
- 39:28either. Like he's more of distance focus
- 39:30as well. And Brian Fay, like he came from
- 39:32nowhere to run like he was easily tent and he picked off so
- 39:37many just on that home straight. Yeah, unbelievable running from
- 39:41the Irish there. And I'd say Stewie was pretty
- 39:43happy with that as well. Like the 353.
- 39:47Yeah. And I'll savage running from the
- 39:48boys. So in terms of like Islands 1500
- 39:52team, how many of these make that all?
- 39:55And how many is on the team? 3 I think.
- 39:58So Costkar and Doyle and then like your man James Gormley, he
- 40:04would have been on the indoor team.
- 40:06He finished 11th there today or there on Friday.
- 40:10So he's there, thereabouts. Like Dermot Kenny would say,
- 40:14call himself a 5K guy, I'd say, and he finished a couple of
- 40:18years ago, he finished fourth in the 3K European Indoor and then
- 40:24he fell off. He had a really rough few years
- 40:27and injuries kept on getting sick.
- 40:30And it's just after clicking for him again there.
- 40:32Nick Griggs is only under 23. That's an under 23 national
- 40:36record for Ireland. So yeah, Irish running is in a
- 40:41is in a really, really, really good place at the moment.
- 40:44You know, just referencing the like the GB marathon team and
- 40:48you talking about the Irish 1500 team there.
- 40:51I feel like with Australia, like we get so much insight into the
- 40:55athletes and where they're at and like what the next plans are
- 40:58because they're on like lots of podcasts and they talk openly
- 41:01about it and stuff. But just don't feel like you get
- 41:03the same access with the British and the Irish athletes.
- 41:06So you don't really know much about them until you see them
- 41:09race essentially, do you? I was lately just talking about
- 41:12that there yesterday night. Whatever.
- 41:15I think it's just the socials. They're way more active in
- 41:18Australia, whereas in Ireland and England it's like more
- 41:20private. But now it is slowly changing.
- 41:23It's just like they're way, way behind even like events like
- 41:27being active on let's say Instagram and all that sort of
- 41:29stuff and like pushing like we've this athlete coming all
- 41:32this like Ireland, England, they just don't have that yet.
- 41:35So it's only a matter of time to be honest.
- 41:37You'll Start learning more about the athletes and their stories
- 41:40and all. And like, I feel like when you
- 41:41know the athletes story, you can really, really get behind them.
- 41:45Same with Jake, like you sort of want to roof from because he's
- 41:48sort of like the underdog. So yeah, times are changing.
- 41:53But even like when you consider like the Australian stars like
- 41:56Brett, Andy, Izzie, calm, like Stewie and stuff, like as
- 42:02talented as they are, they're also like very personable and
- 42:05almost like approachable. Like you feel like you kinda you
- 42:08know them because you get like exposed to them so much through
- 42:11media. But think about the like, Josh
- 42:14Kerr or Mary Karis or something that they're almost like they're
- 42:17just so like cut off from everything.
- 42:19There's, I don't know, it's mad, isn't it?
- 42:21They're like untouchable. Yeah, great.
- 42:23I imagine trying to get Josh Kerr on a on a Patreon series
- 42:26like just wouldn't happen with it, no.
- 42:30No. I've slide into his DMS anyway,
- 42:33see what's happening. Watch this space.
- 42:44Owen conscious. You're going to have to drop out
- 42:46soon. Did you want to tell us about
- 42:47your week? Yeah, so my week, what day did
- 42:53this week start on what date? And it was the 7th, just Roman
- 43:00Strava. Yeah, 7th. 7th So coming off the
- 43:05Sunday, which was a pretty hard long run, I done just 45 minutes
- 43:10in the morning just chilling at 438 pace, like get out the door,
- 43:14shake the legs. And then that evening I done an
- 43:17easy double and I got 35 minutes in with some strides.
- 43:22Just again get the legs moving. Being conscious that I'd race in
- 43:25a couple of days. Tuesday I normally have a double
- 43:28threshold day, but with the race on the Wednesday I just done 45
- 43:33minutes and it was 6 by 100m strides.
- 43:37Then race day I'd done 40 minute shake out in the morning.
- 43:42So the whole plan like this wasn't an A race, so I still was
- 43:47conscious of like keeping out sort of a relatively high
- 43:50training load. So in the morning for 40 minutes
- 43:54and at like 446 pace. So yeah, again, just shaking out
- 43:58the legs. Then my mother and father
- 44:01actually drove me down to the race, which was really, really
- 44:05nice because they'd normally like all the years they would
- 44:08have brought me to like cross country events and all that sort
- 44:10of stuff. So it's really wholesome.
- 44:12Like you sort of forget about it.
- 44:14But like driving down with them for a race, it was really,
- 44:16really nice. And like it's a 3 hour drive so
- 44:20I could just lie down in the back, stretch out the legs, we
- 44:23stopped halfway, get some food. So yeah, I really, really
- 44:25enjoyed that. And then got down to the race
- 44:30and this was really, it was a new experience for me because
- 44:33there was like a call room. So 20 minutes before the race
- 44:37you have to go into a call room. So I only found that out after
- 44:43I'd done like my little 15 minute jog.
- 44:45So normally I do my warm up like an hour before the race.
- 44:50So it was sort of like good practice for nationals because
- 44:53nationals will be a call room as well.
- 44:55So ideally I'd now start my warm, let's say an hour and 15
- 44:59just so I can keep in the same routine.
- 45:01So yeah, anyway, I done a 15 minute warm up and then I, my
- 45:06coach told me to do 2 by 3 minutes a threshold just to get
- 45:10the legs moving. And I was halfway through my
- 45:13first 3 minutes and I could feel like I was getting warm and like
- 45:17I could feel my heart rate rising.
- 45:18So I was like, alright, I'll just call that 2 minutes.
- 45:21So I just done two by two minutes a threshold and then
- 45:24like I felt really, really good. So I knew I sort of on for one
- 45:28and then the race. So it was like a stacked field.
- 45:32It was like like 28 people in the race.
- 45:35But it's really cool because there's a really good atmosphere
- 45:37at it because it was it was a pretty like deep to me.
- 45:40It was like a bronze label meet. So like those big points on the
- 45:43line for like the elite athletes.
- 45:45So yeah, there was really, really good crowd and I hadn't
- 45:48run a track race since since the 5K in Perth back in January.
- 45:53So yeah, sort of just getting familiar with that again.
- 45:57So I just sat back for the first.
- 46:00Yeah, go on. Was it was it was it paced and
- 46:03did you like in terms of standard like it?
- 46:06What did you have a feel for? Sort of what, how quick it was
- 46:09probably going to be one or or sort of set up in.
- 46:13So yeah, last year it was one in 835.
- 46:18So I knew it'd be like their thereabouts, but and I knew my
- 46:24coach done some research on some of the lads in it and they were
- 46:26like in around like eight, 35830 shape.
- 46:29So sort of knew who to look out for.
- 46:31But like I wasn't really sure what shape I was in.
- 46:34I thought I'd run between like 8:40 and 8:35.
- 46:37So I was conscious of just like the first mile, just sitting
- 46:41like feeling good basically after the first mile.
- 46:45And I think it opened up in like a 72 and then some boys, yeah,
- 46:50yeah, it was slow at the start. And then some of the boys
- 46:53started dropping 60 sevens. And then I sort of just, I got
- 46:57sort of got boxed in at the start.
- 46:59So I sort of had to drop back a bit and try and move out.
- 47:02And then I was running lane 2 for a little bit and through a
- 47:05mile I felt like really, really good.
- 47:07So it's like, all right. So I started moving up a little
- 47:10bit, just latching on to the back of that lead pack and yeah,
- 47:14just I felt really, really good. And coming up to the home
- 47:18straight, you sort of got, you sort of got caught behind some
- 47:20lap runners. And so, yeah, I finished up
- 47:23running 827, which I was pretty shocked.
- 47:28And because I literally had done like 11 like decent track
- 47:31session on the Saturday leading up to the race on the Wednesday.
- 47:35So yeah, I was, I was pretty happy with how that turned out.
- 47:40And yeah. And wait.
- 47:42And you were just just behind the winner.
- 47:44Yeah, yeah, right. Behind the winner and looking
- 47:46back on it, I was when I was coming to the home straight, a
- 47:49lap runner got on my way. So we sort of have to stall for
- 47:52a little bit, sort of wait for him to like, get around him.
- 47:55So like, that probably broke my momentum a tiny bit.
- 47:58But look, I wasn't expecting to run 827.
- 48:02So if you told me I was going to run that, I would have liked to
- 48:05start laughing at you. Really.
- 48:07So yeah, no. Happy with where things are at,
- 48:11I just need to keep it up. It wasn't like you.
- 48:15It wasn't like you were ahead with 50 meters to go and started
- 48:18waving your arm around or anything like that.
- 48:21No, no, no, no, no. He was a high.
- 48:24Yeah. No, I was coming from behind.
- 48:27No bicarb. I did and it was funny.
- 48:30So when I was I took bicarb 2 hours before the race, had a cup
- 48:34of coffee and yeah apparently it worked.
- 48:40And it was funny when I was dead little athletes room.
- 48:43So after the race the elite athletes were just walking in
- 48:46getting ready and the boys had their same brand bicab.
- 48:50And I was like oh man, this tastes this watch of this tastes
- 48:54like shit. And it's like yeah I know.
- 48:56But the more I think he said the more in one tastes worse or
- 48:59something like that. And I was like hardly.
- 49:02But he hadn't, his one was like mint flavored and he was asking
- 49:05me like which one do I put in first?
- 49:07Because you get like 2 little packets and yeah, so I eat it
- 49:11with a spoon. But your man's like Oh no, just
- 49:14like naked. So in future I'll probably just
- 49:16naked because it is painful. It is genuinely the worst
- 49:20tasting thing ever. And it's like the consistency
- 49:23and Oh yeah, no, it's not good. And how was your stomach
- 49:26afterwards? Oh grand, yeah, I feel like my
- 49:29tummy like my stomach is good, like normally with all the gels
- 49:33and like I'm pretty good with taking like it.
- 49:35My tummy's like strong enough to call them if they get me, like
- 49:38even all them carb drinks. Somebody sometimes they upset
- 49:41people's tummy as well as mine seems to get on with it, which
- 49:45is good for the future hopefully.
- 49:47And and you're the next section. Just just your reflections in
- 49:53terms of where your shapes at and you know, did your coach
- 49:56pass any comments about obviously this is probably
- 49:59you're probably further ahead than what you thought you might
- 50:01be and just any thought, thoughts or anything any chats
- 50:04you've had? Yeah, so we I am further ahead
- 50:07and like he taught he wouldn't, he didn't have me this before
- 50:10the race, but he thought I was in 835 shape.
- 50:13So yeah, I'm further on ahead. And like you'll hear at the end
- 50:18of this week, now we're like touching on the speed work.
- 50:21So he feels if I do get my speed in, like I should be like
- 50:25nationals is in. It's at the start of August, so
- 50:28it's probably coming a little bit soon, but it's basically a
- 50:31free hit again. I'll try and get another track
- 50:34race at the end of August and then I'll probably take a little
- 50:37bit of downtime before building up for cross country.
- 50:41And what will? Your race Nationals.
- 50:43I'll race the 5K, which will be pretty interesting because you
- 50:46have like the 13 low guys, you've got 14 guys, 14 minute
- 50:51guys and then you've probably got me.
- 50:52So it'll be an interesting race to see what way that plans out.
- 50:56But again, like, it's the races you want to be in and hopefully
- 50:59I get into the A race, but dead as you want to be and you get
- 51:03dragged along to a fast time. So basically I just need to keep
- 51:07fit and healthy. It's just like there's no point
- 51:10of getting like a good couple of weeks under my belt and now just
- 51:12like falling off a Cliff now again.
- 51:14So I just need to keep a living that like the intensity is going
- 51:17to ramp up. So probably my mileage will cut
- 51:20down a little bit just to keep like everything in balance.
- 51:24But yeah, at the moment I'm feeling all right.
- 51:28So the next morning I was meant to have 80 minutes, but because
- 51:32I got back like late enough, I split it into two runs.
- 51:36So I don't have 40 minutes in the morning at 440 pace.
- 51:40And then on a Thursday I do gym with my coach, so he's a little
- 51:44gym in his house. So I went and done gym with him
- 51:48and then I got out straight after that to do my second 40
- 51:52minutes again, 440 pace and my legs are feeling decent.
- 51:55Like I thought my calves would be torn up to bits after doing
- 51:59the track race, but because it was only three K like it was
- 52:01only 8 1/2 minutes worth of work.
- 52:03Like it actually pulled up pretty well, so I was happy with
- 52:05that. The brand new spikes would have
- 52:07helped as well. They actually have a bit more in
- 52:11them I feel. The Dragonfly twos.
- 52:13It's all meant to be and. Then Friday, totally off feed
- 52:20up. I think it's crazy because like
- 52:23my average steps for a day is normally like well over like
- 52:262025 thousand steps. And then on a Friday, I work
- 52:30from home, I literally don't move.
- 52:32So it's like under 5. So like yeah, and it's so warm
- 52:36here right now. I cannot, I cannot guys.
- 52:41Yesterday, alright, I'll bring out Saturday.
- 52:43Saturday it was track session. I've been Googling like Dublin
- 52:48weather for the past two weeks. I'm trying to see where it gets
- 52:54it's like high of 24 high of like it 28 maybe 2827.
- 53:04Equivalent to like 50° in person.
- 53:08It was so yesterday track session without for a warm up.
- 53:11And then the session was three sets of 1K600400200 and there
- 53:19was 90 seconds break in between them.
- 53:22And I don't know whether it was the lactic, the heat.
- 53:26I was just finessed. So the the one KS were hopefully
- 53:31in 5K case. So I done them in around like 71
- 53:34seventies. The six hundreds were in 3K
- 53:37pace, so around 6768. The four hundreds were in around
- 53:426460 threes and the two hundreds were in around like 2920 eights.
- 53:47So yeah, total. I think after the second set I
- 53:52was in the bin like just filled with lactic.
- 53:57Every time I hit like the 200m mark of a set, I was like just
- 54:00getting shot by the lactic sniper.
- 54:02I was in the bin like headache everything.
- 54:07And it's probably like the effects of the race as well.
- 54:10I don't know. I was just so, so tired.
- 54:14But like in that session, it was AK word of work and like I
- 54:17wasn't too far off hitting all the all of the set paces as
- 54:20well. But umm, yeah, the heat was just
- 54:23an absolute killer. And like, it was.
- 54:28Maybe that's your body because hasn't done you haven't done
- 54:30much track work in ages. And then when you've done that
- 54:32race, you had the Watch Me Call It by Carb Black.
- 54:37Carb, yeah. So then your body's like, we'll
- 54:39hang on. Last time we've done this, you
- 54:41gave me all this bicarb and I was able to buffer the lactic
- 54:44and now you've given me nothing, so I'm going to smash you.
- 54:47Yeah, basically. And the heat, we cannot stress
- 54:51how hard it was. They had to.
- 54:54There's posts up on Facebook telling people not to go to the
- 54:57beaches because there was no parking because the whole
- 55:00country was at the beach. It was crazy.
- 55:03I had a barbecue in Ireland. Like it's so weird.
- 55:08I seen a guy last night who's from the UK as well and he said
- 55:12oh, like he was for how how much they can't handle the heat.
- 55:17Like, obviously it's been hot, but he was like seeing a post on
- 55:20Facebook and there's people saying don't leave lighters
- 55:24inside your car because they might explode.
- 55:28There's like water bounds in place even though next week it's
- 55:32going to be flash for loads probably.
- 55:35You can you can educate them on air temperature plus dew point.
- 55:39Temperature equals heat adjusted pace.
- 55:42You know, like it's I. Don't understand that I need
- 55:44you. Clearly, because no one needs to
- 55:46in Ireland. It's the.
- 55:47It's the three days of the. Year where you have to have.
- 55:50Regard to it but. But then air con doesn't exist,
- 55:55does it? So what are you trying to manage
- 55:56with like? A Yeah, yeah.
- 55:59We don't even have fans, we just opened the window normally.
- 56:07But yeah, that evening I got out for 45 minutes at 435 pace just
- 56:12to shake the legs out. And then this morning, this
- 56:15morning I had my long run. So an hour and 40 this four,
- 56:20first 40 chilling and then I done 2 sets.
- 56:24Well, 10 minutes between 326 and 318 per kilometer pace, 5 minute
- 56:30flow and another 10 minutes at that pace again.
- 56:33And then just jog. And I had to like my heart rate
- 56:38was through the roof right from the off.
- 56:41Normally at these long runs, it normally sits like mid one 30s,
- 56:45but it was like mid one 50s, like from the off.
- 56:49Yeah, I am in the oven. Yeah, into the Irish oven.
- 56:52Didn't think I'd ever say. I had to stop after like I think
- 56:55I'd like 30 minutes left and I had to like go into like a local
- 56:59little. Is there littles in Australia or
- 57:01is it ALDI? ALDI.
- 57:03ALDI, there's boat over here. So I had to call into a little
- 57:06to get a bottle of water because obviously there's no water
- 57:09fountains in Ireland. So on these long runs, I'm there
- 57:13like dying of thirst. So what they call them to a shop
- 57:16at least. And that was sort of a nice way
- 57:17to like let the heart rate reset because I was doing my floats
- 57:21and like, it was nearly 160. Like it was just, it was not
- 57:24going down. And so, yeah, I got my liter of
- 57:28water into me and then just like jogged the last 30 minutes and
- 57:32like, my legs feel poppy. Like the effort felt good.
- 57:35It's just my heart rate was really high.
- 57:37So look, I'm just tired coming off a big week.
- 57:39Yeah. So yeah, 115, nearly 116
- 57:43kilometers for the week with like a race and all really big
- 57:46track session. So just hopefully another two
- 57:48more big weeks and then I'll erase the 5K and we'll see how
- 57:52we get on with the big boys. Did you, did you get an
- 57:55unpleasant surprise when you got back home remembering what the
- 57:59public toilet situations like? Is it the same as in the UK?
- 58:03As in, like there's none anywhere, and if they are,
- 58:05they're either like vandalized or haven't been serviced in six
- 58:08months and there's shit everywhere or they're locked.
- 58:12Where I am, there's none. Your local toilet is like a
- 58:15ditch on the side of the road. So yeah, no toilets, no water.
- 58:23Well, I get to work on here. We're based based on the results
- 58:28we've read off. You're punching above your
- 58:30waist. You guys don't realize how lucky
- 58:33you are like the new Kenya and Ethiopia.
- 58:40Based on all the all the chat on the Coffee Club Dean about the
- 58:44heat acclimatation acclimatization training, the
- 58:49heat being a poor man's old shoes is actually getting some
- 58:52weight thrown towards it now. Yeah, I'm, I'm desperate to get
- 58:56my hands on one of those heat like temperature devices so we
- 59:02can sort of track it. It'd be it'd be so cool to wear
- 59:041 during summer and see like what happens wouldn't it?
- 59:07200% acclimatized I. See.
- 59:10Just come over here to Ireland to do some heat training when
- 59:14it's winter over in Paris. Perfect.
- 59:18Could be on to something. Come on, Rise, I'm going to have
- 59:21to dip, OK? Yeah, all good.
- 59:23Thanks for your contribution. Good.
- 59:25Good to hear about your race. Well done.
- 59:27I'll chat to this child and I'll see you next week.
- 59:30Bye, mate. Dean, do you want to tell us
- 59:32about your week? Yeah, I can.
- 59:35Yeah, whip through mine. So Monday is just the usual
- 59:39commute to commute runs to and from the office.
- 59:43Tuesday's a. I commuted in and then to the
- 59:46track in the afternoon as I normally do.
- 59:50Sorry to. Interrupt.
- 59:51You already can. Can I ask you this question now?
- 59:53Because it's been a listener question for a few weeks and we
- 59:56we've never got round to it. Yes, it's very relevant to your
- 1:00:00commutes. So Eric Neville says as an
- 1:00:04aspiring commuter, I find it pretty unpleasant to run with a
- 1:00:08bag of any size. Would be interested to see if
- 1:00:11there's anything Dean has done to make Logan clothes in and out
- 1:00:14of the office more pleasant. Yeah, my trick is just to carry
- 1:00:17less so, but that's not completely avoidable for
- 1:00:21something so like nowadays. So I sort of have a computer in
- 1:00:26the office and then a computer at home so I don't have to
- 1:00:29transport that. And then what I'll do is take in
- 1:00:32like a heap of like chinos and my work shoes and all the other
- 1:00:38bits and pieces, like I'll have like an inventory of bits and
- 1:00:41pieces in the office, like in my locker.
- 1:00:44And so then all I need to do is run in and out of the office
- 1:00:47like socks, jocks and a polo, a work polo.
- 1:00:51So which hopefully doesn't need an iron.
- 1:00:54So that's the way I keep it as simple as possible.
- 1:00:57So then the backpack I carry is really small.
- 1:01:00The only other thing I add to it is a pair of racing flats on
- 1:01:02Tuesday, Thursday. So I would, so my suggestion
- 1:01:07having commuted a lot is that if you can limit the amount that
- 1:01:10you're carrying, that's the best way.
- 1:01:12Because I find backpacks annoying as well.
- 1:01:14And I have on occasion if I'm trying to carry too much, hurt
- 1:01:18my back or the back part of my ribs and needed to go to the
- 1:01:21physio to get sort of get it worked on because it sort of
- 1:01:24locks up. So limiting the amount you put
- 1:01:26in the back, you know, it's not like cycling, like a lot of the
- 1:01:29cycling commuters tend to have these pretty big back backpacks
- 1:01:32that they can carry a heap of stuff on.
- 1:01:34But running, I think the best thing you can do is limit it.
- 1:01:38And then, yeah, just find a I've tried a few different backpacks,
- 1:01:41but you just want to find one that sits, really sits really
- 1:01:45well that sort of has a few places to sort of fasten up so
- 1:01:47that it's not not everything's jumping around within the back
- 1:01:51backpack. Like I have it fit pretty snug.
- 1:01:54And I've had that for maybe like 15 years, the same backpack.
- 1:01:56It's been pretty good to me. But yeah, that would be my tips.
- 1:02:00So the key is to do a trip into work with like half your
- 1:02:04wardrobe to get it there. Pretty much and then just on OK
- 1:02:08like once every couple of weeks when I have to clear out a heap
- 1:02:10of crap, I'll I'll grab it. But I hate a bit like Neville.
- 1:02:14I hate running with a heap of stuff in my my backpack.
- 1:02:17So that's how I manage it week to week.
- 1:02:20So I've always took took your your story at face value, but
- 1:02:24when was the last time that your chinos were washed then if
- 1:02:26they're the ones that just stay in the office?
- 1:02:28Oh, I've got maybe like 4 pairs I'd say in there and then I'll
- 1:02:32just once every few weeks I might get house to pick me up
- 1:02:36and I'll take, I'll get them cleaned by I get them clean the
- 1:02:41house, they've put them in the magical basket and then I find
- 1:02:44them cleaned and get dropped off in the office again.
- 1:02:47So. It's a good, it's a good towel.
- 1:02:50To be honest, that's probably the other part that maybe you
- 1:02:54know. Having a support team.
- 1:02:56I didn't mention to Neville. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:02:58He's try getting a very helpful wife that'll wash everything.
- 1:03:02Can drop you off at the office every day and again and you're
- 1:03:04laughing there. You go.
- 1:03:06That's probably the best, best advice we've given out on this
- 1:03:09podcast today. That's the only way I'm able to
- 1:03:12record at 6:00 when the kids are kicking off.
- 1:03:20But yes, Tuesday night I was at the track 4.
- 1:03:24It's a four lap build into you'd remember this one, Ryan, but
- 1:03:28it's like 4 lap build and then it's Oh, you, you actually had
- 1:03:32front row seats right, So I I saw.
- 1:03:34You there? So, yeah, Chief.
- 1:03:37Cheerleader. That's right.
- 1:03:39So no. Yeah, 4 lap build into 5 by 5
- 1:03:43sets of 800 meters at VO2 and then 60 seconds static rest.
- 1:03:47And then 400 meters, a little bit quicker than the, the 8
- 1:03:51hundreds and the four and two minutes static Crest after each
- 1:03:55400. So yeah, 800 four, 100 * 5.
- 1:04:02And yeah, I was joined Luke Bates.
- 1:04:05So he's sort of like a good runner and a but a triathlete by
- 1:04:09trade. So he, he was down there and he
- 1:04:12was getting stuck right into it. He sort of on their nose, on or
- 1:04:17off, lucky on their nose, go or go harder.
- 1:04:20So it was good. Yeah.
- 1:04:22I didn't feel too bad. Luke was a bit ahead for most of
- 1:04:25them, or at least the first half of the workout.
- 1:04:29Gosh, what did what did we do? Yeah, we sort of built pretty
- 1:04:31evenly through the full lap build.
- 1:04:34I think we went 76 down to 70 seconds and then the 800 meters
- 1:04:39were in 217 or 216. So that's sort of 6868 1/2
- 1:04:45second per lap, which is sort of what I hope to do.
- 1:04:47And now we're all pretty even, which was good.
- 1:04:50And then the four hundreds were in around I think about 65
- 1:04:55seconds, 66 seconds. So just a couple seconds, a lot
- 1:04:58quicker than the 8 hundreds. Yeah, it felt hard, like I'd
- 1:05:02come off like a pretty solid week last week.
- 1:05:05And yeah, it didn't feel amazing, but it felt like I got
- 1:05:09done what I needed to. Wasn't your last one, Didn't you
- 1:05:12drop like a 60 or a 61 on your last one?
- 1:05:14No, that was oh. No, that was that was Luke and
- 1:05:18one of the young lads because we had a few younger guys but they
- 1:05:21did four sets and I ended up doing the fifth set solo.
- 1:05:25So they all finished at 4:00, and then in that last 400, they
- 1:05:28all got stuck into that. So they all left me for death.
- 1:05:32But yeah, but that was good, you know, got it, got it done.
- 1:05:35Spent time running, you know, at A at a decent clip.
- 1:05:39And yeah, I could feel everything getting pretty tight
- 1:05:42towards the end of that. So I'm glad I didn't push any
- 1:05:45harder than what I did. Wednesday, just two commutes as
- 1:05:49per normal. And then Thursday, the double
- 1:05:53threshold, this must be like 6-7 weeks that I've sort of been
- 1:05:55doing this double threshold for. So getting into a bit of a
- 1:05:58rhythm with it, I just remember being pretty tired.
- 1:06:02I've sort of been working some pretty long hours this week,
- 1:06:05like sort of when the kids go to bed working till pretty late.
- 1:06:08So I remember just being pretty tired by Thursday.
- 1:06:10But yeah, it was 3 by 8 minutes in the morning with a one minute
- 1:06:15float just around manga average like 3 1/2 minute K pace for the
- 1:06:19for the workout and then choked into the office and then back to
- 1:06:24manga for the afternoon for eight by two minutes on one
- 1:06:27minute float. And Luke was there again, which
- 1:06:32was good. And we were pretty even, I
- 1:06:35think. Yeah, I just remembered that all
- 1:06:38of the the two-minute Rep reps being pretty consistent.
- 1:06:41We maybe picked it up slightly towards the end, but we're
- 1:06:44probably about that sort of three O 5 pace for sort of the
- 1:06:48on efforts and then 3:20-ish for the offs.
- 1:06:53I think we averaged like three O 8 pace for the for the 24
- 1:06:56minutes, which is good. Sort of yeah.
- 1:07:01Didn't feel like it was like we were overreaching, felt in
- 1:07:04control. Another cracking night like it
- 1:07:06was that like another cool steel night around the track under
- 1:07:11sorry under the at the lake like it's all well lit and that
- 1:07:15footpath all completely uninterrupted 3 1/2 K loop.
- 1:07:18It's really nice. So yeah.
- 1:07:20There were plenty of space on there.
- 1:07:22It's not not that busy now because it's cooler.
- 1:07:26Exactly. It's really like clears right
- 1:07:28out at this time of year. So yeah, you sort of have the
- 1:07:32the lake pretty much to yourself.
- 1:07:34So it's a yeah, really nice. It's probably be a bit eerie on
- 1:07:38your own, but with a group it's it's a lot of fun on a on a cool
- 1:07:43evening. You know, on, on the double
- 1:07:44threshold stuff, obviously you've trained for what 10-15
- 1:07:49years. So like you're very in tune with
- 1:07:51how you feel all the time. You've got lots of stuff to
- 1:07:53refer back to and compare to. Can you, do you feel a
- 1:07:58difference of it? Like do you feel stronger or
- 1:08:00like, and now after 8 weeks, like at first did you in the
- 1:08:06evening session, could you still feel the morning session that
- 1:08:09like you, you were tired and now do you feel OK in the evening?
- 1:08:13Yeah, I think so. Like I think in the more, yeah,
- 1:08:16in the evening session, I felt noticeably like when I started
- 1:08:20it quite fatigued. Like it was like, oh, this feels
- 1:08:24a bit strange. And then so you sort of were
- 1:08:26very cautious with how you ran the second effort, whereas now
- 1:08:30it doesn't feel too bad. You sort of.
- 1:08:33Yeah. Now I don't feel as impacted by
- 1:08:35the morning workout by the end of the Thursday, like when I'm
- 1:08:39jogging home, I feel pretty erect.
- 1:08:43But the actual workout itself, I don't feel like I'm too impacted
- 1:08:47by it. And in terms of pulling up, like
- 1:08:49I'm tired on Friday, I definitely feel tired on Friday.
- 1:08:52And it's probably Saturday morning that I probably feel at
- 1:08:54the most like Thursday itself. No problem.
- 1:08:57But two jogs on a Saturday and then if you're pretty even, if
- 1:09:00you're pretty tired, you're sort of up at, I don't know, 5:30 on
- 1:09:03Saturday trying and then trying to get in a quality workout
- 1:09:06Saturday morning. I think that's the hardest part.
- 1:09:07That's probably where I'm feeling it the most.
- 1:09:09But I think like 4 opportunities to do some quality work plus a
- 1:09:14long run. It's like, I feel like it's a,
- 1:09:16I'm hoping that'll be, yeah, worthwhile.
- 1:09:19I am enjoying the sort of polarized days a bit like
- 1:09:23Monday, Wednesday, Friday, obvious days where I'm not sort
- 1:09:27of thinking about running or you know, you, I'm commuting, but
- 1:09:30it's not really a training day, whereas Tuesday, Thursday,
- 1:09:33Saturday, Sunday are. So I I sort of like that about
- 1:09:35it. You know, pre introducing the
- 1:09:38double threshold you were starting to maybe squeeze the
- 1:09:41Wednesday into a steady run. Have you dropped that now
- 1:09:44because of the double threshold? Yeah, so it's just two jogs on a
- 1:09:48on a Wednesday now, which. So in terms of the idea of
- 1:09:51running hard on the track on Tuesday and then just switching
- 1:09:53off on a Wednesday is quite nice.
- 1:09:55Whereas I felt like I was doing something 5 days of the week.
- 1:09:58So yeah, doing this sort of way of doing things has sort of been
- 1:10:02nice for sure. And I find as well, like it's
- 1:10:06easier for me to run more like in terms of trying to get your
- 1:10:09mileage, you know, when you're trying to not chase kilometers,
- 1:10:12but when you're trying to find a way to aggregate more volume in
- 1:10:16a given week, doing this on a Thursday, so sort of stacking a
- 1:10:19really high training load day, it means you're running a lot in
- 1:10:22one day. It sort of takes the pressure
- 1:10:24off trying to find another 20-30 minutes and trying to find
- 1:10:27minutes every day. Like when you sort of just want
- 1:10:30to get home on a Wednesday night, you don't want to be
- 1:10:32running for 60 minutes. Or even if you're feeling
- 1:10:34pressure to get into the office, like trying to find that added
- 1:10:37time to run versus, hey, Thursday is like a big training
- 1:10:40day. It's, it feels like a much
- 1:10:41easier way for me to get my training done.
- 1:10:44So it's been good, been it. I've enjoyed the change.
- 1:10:47Well, hopefully will we get to see the effects of it maybe next
- 1:10:51week. Yeah, I think so.
- 1:10:53I think that's the plan. So there's that Shelly 10K next
- 1:10:56Sunday morning. So yeah, I'm not sure if I'll
- 1:11:00taper at all into it, but it might just be an opportunity.
- 1:11:04I've not done a had a hit out in a while.
- 1:11:05So and that would then lead into the Perth half, which is a few
- 1:11:10weeks after that. So that's the plan.
- 1:11:12She wanted to open Worth. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:11:16And then, yeah, Friday, just two commutes and then Saturday was a
- 1:11:21a tempo in Kings Park. So it was 16 minutes tempo and
- 1:11:27then 6 by 30 seconds, sort of like 30 second accelerations up
- 1:11:32the hill. So we sort of start at the
- 1:11:33bottom of the Gray Mile in Kings Park and it's got like a pretty
- 1:11:36consistent sort of 3:00-ish percent gradient up there.
- 1:11:39So you do these 32nd accelerations up there, job down
- 1:11:42times 6 and then a minute jog recovery and then another 16
- 1:11:47minute tempo. So Max was down there again.
- 1:11:52Oh, sorry, back. He missed the last week or two
- 1:11:54with an injury, but he was back. And he was.
- 1:11:57Flying along, I wasn't close to him.
- 1:11:59He sort of just took off in the first one and I didn't go with.
- 1:12:02I was sort of just trying to get it done, which was good.
- 1:12:06Seeing seeing him getting a crown on on Strava and I thought
- 1:12:10oh buddy Ally must have given that 1A nudge I think.
- 1:12:13You took it off me? I had a look.
- 1:12:17Cheeky bugger. So if I knew that I would have
- 1:12:19maybe. You would have got an e-mail
- 1:12:21when you got home. Yeah, so I had a look.
- 1:12:24I had a look. I saw he got the crown and I've
- 1:12:25clicked in there and I saw that my name was like below it, I
- 1:12:28thought. Son of A.
- 1:12:30So eyes on Dean. Next time he's doing a session
- 1:12:33in Kings Park, he's got a crown. I'll snipe that later.
- 1:12:37But yeah, I didn't think I didn't run too far off of what I
- 1:12:42normally would, which was good. We just did 8-8 minutes
- 1:12:45essentially up from the bottom of Kings Park, up along May
- 1:12:48Drive and then looped back. Yeah, I didn't feel great, but I
- 1:12:55I got it done. That's the main thing.
- 1:12:57Those Kings Park ones always keep you so honest, don't they?
- 1:13:00There's no, there's like no escaping.
- 1:13:02As we've said before, we're kind of like that out and back.
- 1:13:05You kind of held to account by your peers as well, aren't you?
- 1:13:09And then with those bloody 32nd surges, you can't get away with
- 1:13:13running your first Rep too quick because 2-3 minutes into that
- 1:13:17second Rep you could be blowing up.
- 1:13:20Yeah, well, that's we've done it all before, right?
- 1:13:22And you sort of know when you turn around how far we all are
- 1:13:26from one another. And you remember that's when
- 1:13:29Owen Hurdies hit one time we did this workout.
- 1:13:31Remember doing that? U-turn on one of them.
- 1:13:36That's yeah, it's yeah, look, gets you, hopefully gets you
- 1:13:40fit. And then yeah, Sunday I just had
- 1:13:44just did 2 hours 15 minutes like jog met Josh for the first hour
- 1:13:50and a bit of it. Did a couple of laps around
- 1:13:52herdsmen together and then just yeah, did the rest solo and and
- 1:13:57home. So was 164 KS for the week.
- 1:14:01Good you consistent with these 160 ish K weeks now aren't you
- 1:14:06as well? Yeah, It feels like it's
- 1:14:07becoming, I'm trying to make it a bit more of a normal thing and
- 1:14:10it's sort of where it's sort of like the, it's where my sort of
- 1:14:13mileage falls out to a degree. You know, on on mileage just
- 1:14:17seen before. Obviously Jake being the the
- 1:14:21king of mileage. You might actually have some
- 1:14:23competition. You know Connor Dillon?
- 1:14:25He's oh. He's a machine man.
- 1:14:28He's stuck like 5250K weeks in a row as well like he's on the
- 1:14:321000 K months himself. Yeah, no, I I keep an eye on it.
- 1:14:37And he's built like a Jake calls himself a cart horse.
- 1:14:41Connors, I think is actually built like a cart horse.
- 1:14:43Have you said he's a pretty solid dude?
- 1:14:44So yeah, Yeah, it's pretty impressive.
- 1:14:47Well, very impressive. And it's not just jogging
- 1:14:49either. Like there's quality and all
- 1:14:51that. Yeah, it's.
- 1:14:52And I think he's and I think he's.
- 1:14:54Some of that's in and around, like working as well.
- 1:14:56So yeah, now you have to tip your hat to that, don't you?
- 1:14:59It's pretty inspirational and it keeps when when you think you
- 1:15:02run 160 KA week and you feel like good and it's a big week
- 1:15:05and stuff, then you see that people are doing this.
- 1:15:08It's like how but. I don't know how.
- 1:15:11Yeah, I just, yeah, I just appreciate it.
- 1:15:15Maybe one day. You know, I looked back at my
- 1:15:20Strava before because I keep just saying to people like, Oh
- 1:15:23yeah, about six weeks on RAM 4 or whatever, and I thought, I
- 1:15:25want to actually see when it was.
- 1:15:28And it's 8 1/2 weeks. This is flown by.
- 1:15:32So people are doing 250K in a week.
- 1:15:35I've done 0K in 8 1/2 weeks so I'm flying.
- 1:15:43Well, that segues neatly into. Your update.
- 1:15:46Yeah, decently cross training and cycling and stuff, I've
- 1:15:51managed to get a bit of training load through that, so I feel
- 1:15:54somewhat OK for that. But someone told me the other
- 1:15:58day, Chart Miller, the Perth locals might be familiar with
- 1:16:03me, went to College in the US and run a 359 mile.
- 1:16:07But he told me that he had plantar for a little while in
- 1:16:10college and he tried all the remedies and went through all
- 1:16:14the motions of doing everything and it wouldn't budget until in
- 1:16:17the end he got a treatment called PRP Platelet Rich Plasma.
- 1:16:22And I've not heard of it, surprisingly, because everyone
- 1:16:25seems to have offered me their own remedies and what's worked
- 1:16:28for them, but no one's kind of offered this one.
- 1:16:32I think it's because it's more of like a specialist sports
- 1:16:34doctor treatment and probably quite expensive as well,
- 1:16:38unfortunately for me. But essentially what it is, is
- 1:16:41they take some of your blood from like a healthy area of your
- 1:16:44body, spin it round really fast and like these micro dishes to
- 1:16:49kind of increase the, the blood plasma volume.
- 1:16:53And then they reinsert it back into the affected area and it
- 1:16:57kind of encourages healing. And Chart said that was almost
- 1:17:02instant for him and it never came back.
- 1:17:04And it was just one injection. So it's it's a cost I'll be
- 1:17:08willing to front based on that. I did, I did mention to Raff and
- 1:17:12he said speak to a sports doctor first because the the research
- 1:17:17and the study is limited. So you want to get a proper
- 1:17:20recommendation from them. But that's given me motivation
- 1:17:25and hopefully some hope this week that might be another step
- 1:17:29in the right direction soon because I don't know, I just
- 1:17:32feel like it shouldn't take this long.
- 1:17:35It's really frustrating. I don't know if I don't know,
- 1:17:39they missed something on the MRI and there's something else going
- 1:17:42on. Might ask to get the MRI re
- 1:17:44looked at but yeah. Do you feel it?
- 1:17:48Is it are you feeling it in every day or is it after you've
- 1:17:51done something on it that you feel it flare up?
- 1:17:54No, Usually, yeah, when once you start doing all the exercises,
- 1:17:57then the next day, maybe it's a little bit tender, but like
- 1:18:00walking around day-to-day and stuff, it's fine.
- 1:18:02Which is the annoying part because I feel like a fraud
- 1:18:05because I'm able to even do the drills and stuff and able to
- 1:18:09cross train like load it through the cross cross trainer.
- 1:18:12It's just that like know that as soon as there's that proper load
- 1:18:16into it, it's just horrible. But I mean, it does feel
- 1:18:20slightly better, but still not, not worth trying to run on.
- 1:18:24So yeah, we'll see moving forward hopefully because yeah,
- 1:18:29I just want to get that that next race entry in and have
- 1:18:33something to think about. Even if I do three weeks
- 1:18:36training and then just have a race to just to kind of race and
- 1:18:40feel involved again. I'm not bothered about finding
- 1:18:45peak fitness or anything anytime soon.
- 1:18:47I just want to be back in the mixer.
- 1:18:49Yeah. And even Owen shows sort of once
- 1:18:51you start to create that momentum, build a base, and then
- 1:18:53get back into training, it sort of it all starts to click sooner
- 1:18:57than what we sometimes think it will, which is nice, but it's
- 1:19:00just getting to that point. Well, that's it.
- 1:19:03And then just hopefully with the cross training you, you give
- 1:19:06yourself some sort of a base to work from anyway.
- 1:19:08So yeah, right then training weeks done.
- 1:19:11We have some other talking points in relation to running
- 1:19:14news, but not results. So the the homegrown hero Seth
- 1:19:18O'Donnell looks like he's confirmed in fact, that he's
- 1:19:21gone and signed the contract with Nike.
- 1:19:24So he's answered all the uncertainty and all the rumours
- 1:19:27around what was going on. So it's his journey just keeps
- 1:19:31getting more and more interesting and I'm sure
- 1:19:33everyone will be following that because he's gone to Europe as
- 1:19:36well as Nice. So keen to see how he gets on.
- 1:19:40Looks like he's going to chase a few times.
- 1:19:42Yeah, his Instagram is always good when he's posting content
- 1:19:45on there, isn't it? There's no one like him.
- 1:19:48I don't think if you were to try and explain him to someone in
- 1:19:51terms of like, yeah, he's kind of.
- 1:19:53I just wouldn't know where to start.
- 1:19:54It's just so, it's so Seth. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:19:58And I can't think who it was. He's an old 800m runner for
- 1:20:03Australia. Shit.
- 1:20:04I'll have to have a look at his name.
- 1:20:06But in Seth's post where he like done the Nike announcement and
- 1:20:09it was a bit of a vlog or a reel in going to Europe in all his
- 1:20:14Nike kit. The guy said, did you really
- 1:20:18travel like 24 hours in the Nike Pro kit?
- 1:20:21Because he's got like literally the ratios on 2 inches.
- 1:20:26He's on the flight. So good which and again you
- 1:20:33probably. Wouldn't be completely surprised
- 1:20:34would you like he He won nationals with his singlet
- 1:20:39inside out. I think like at first you get
- 1:20:46the impression that maybe some of the guys on like the proceed
- 1:20:49already, like maybe didn't take him seriously and couldn't take
- 1:20:52him seriously. But he's he's proven everyone
- 1:20:55wrong and it's so good to see. Yeah, but but he like, I'm
- 1:20:59pretty sure he picked up running during COVID.
- 1:21:01So like if he's like when he didn't know about like brand
- 1:21:04logo sizes and stuff at nationals, it's probably because
- 1:21:07he just didn't know. Like it's.
- 1:21:09Yeah. Which it makes his story even
- 1:21:11more exciting. Like it just makes it even
- 1:21:14better. And that's probably why some of
- 1:21:16the pros didn't take him seriously at first because
- 1:21:19they're like, Oh well, we've known each other for 10 plus
- 1:21:22years. We've been racing against each
- 1:21:24other for years. Like this guy's new to the
- 1:21:26sport, He hasn't got a clue type thing, but yeah, he's well and
- 1:21:30truly in there now. Yeah, that was so cool.
- 1:21:32Some London Diamond League news. So Saifan Hassan, who's kind of
- 1:21:37like the star of the Sydney Marathon line or has announced
- 1:21:41that she's doing the mile at the London Diamond League next week.
- 1:21:44And that just kind of sums up the athlete that she is, doesn't
- 1:21:48it really? Yeah, anyone else what you'd say
- 1:21:51she's not taking Sydney seriously, but she she did that.
- 1:21:54She signed up for the 15105 K 10K ahead of the Olympic
- 1:21:58marathon, so all at the ONE championships.
- 1:22:01So you wouldn't. It's probably all part of her
- 1:22:03training block. Yeah, the method in the madness
- 1:22:07she's I'd be interested to see what sort of time she runs
- 1:22:10because yeah, I mean, she she's not going to come into Sydney
- 1:22:13like in bad shape, but she she's obviously going to be going to
- 1:22:16win because it's a world marathon major now at the end of
- 1:22:19the day, like it's a big title to to secure.
- 1:22:21Yeah, big prize money and a long way to come.
- 1:22:24I don't think he'd come all this way otherwise.
- 1:22:26Well, yeah, hopefully not. Hopefully the appearance fee
- 1:22:30isn't just allowing for something that, yeah, I think at
- 1:22:33the opportunity cost of a champion like a World
- 1:22:35Championships, people would probably want to make the most
- 1:22:37of it, wouldn't they? For sure.
- 1:22:39And she's not sorry. I was just going to say, and
- 1:22:42it's not like she's towards the end of her career like and sort
- 1:22:45of just and would be interested in just chasing prize money.
- 1:22:48I suspect the the the opportunity to race and win
- 1:22:52races would be what excites people, and winning the
- 1:22:55inaugural event would be like special.
- 1:22:59Yeah, maybe this this mile is the start of air track season
- 1:23:02and they're building to Tokyo world champs and she's just
- 1:23:05going to slot and win in Sydney in the middle of it.
- 1:23:09Is it a long run? Also on London Diamond League,
- 1:23:13which is next weekend, Jacob in Britain has unfortunately
- 1:23:17withdrew from the, I think it's a 50 in the men's race there.
- 1:23:21So unfortunately we'll have to wait a little longer to see his
- 1:23:25return, which would have also been his the re reignition of
- 1:23:30the rivalry with Josh Kerr. Because that's the good thing.
- 1:23:34Josh Kerr is racing London Diamond League, so it'd be good
- 1:23:37to see how he fits into the field.
- 1:23:40You'd imagine he wouldn't want to be turning off and kind of
- 1:23:43having like a 5th or 6th place finish and being like, Oh yeah,
- 1:23:46well I'm just kind of like building towards Tokyo.
- 1:23:49If he's racing because he hasn't yet or hasn't for a little
- 1:23:52while, he's going to want to be competitive, isn't he?
- 1:23:55And have people saying good things rather than bad things.
- 1:23:58And then Keely Hodgkinson has unfortunately withdrew from the
- 1:24:02women's 800, which is a shame because we haven't seen a race
- 1:24:06for so long now. But she did comment on the on
- 1:24:09the post with like whatever it was, it was kind of like a
- 1:24:12positive comment as if to say, I'm not injured.
- 1:24:16It's just like maybe it wasn't the right time to race yet.
- 1:24:20You'll have to wait a couple more weeks.
- 1:24:21So hopefully things are all good there.
- 1:24:26Did you want to talk about that Dope and Doctor video or?
- 1:24:30Yes. I mean, yeah, yeah, I think.
- 1:24:36I don't know how I. Don't know how recent some of
- 1:24:38all this stuff is, but there's some videos doing the rounds of
- 1:24:41athletes sort of confessing to taking APO and how accessible it
- 1:24:45is. And then that same sort of
- 1:24:46Instagram page is sharing, which there's another video on.
- 1:24:50Like how many of the top of the women's finalists at the 2012,
- 1:24:561500 meters at the Olympics have been rubbed out?
- 1:24:59Was it like 6 of the top 9, I think have all been suspended
- 1:25:02since competing at the in the final in the women's 1500.
- 1:25:06And I think was it Shannon Robbery?
- 1:25:08I think an American woman that was she may be placed fifth has
- 1:25:12been promoted to 3rd and just sort of calls into, you know,
- 1:25:15it's just so frustrating because you sort of that that person has
- 1:25:19missed their sort of Olympic moment.
- 1:25:21Like they might get their medal now, but it's sort of the
- 1:25:23Olympic moment and all the foregone sort of opportunities
- 1:25:26that would have come with being an Olympic medallist and not
- 1:25:29there and also all these people that maybe would have got
- 1:25:32funding. Off the back of how they would
- 1:25:35have performed or have maybe missed the final, it's sort of
- 1:25:38just, yeah, it's just an upsetting, sad part of the sport
- 1:25:42that you follow and it just makes following the sport hard
- 1:25:44as well when they're sort of. When you sort of have this cloud
- 1:25:46of of doping always hanging over it.
- 1:25:48Yeah, kind of feeds into what we've said the past couple of
- 1:25:51weeks, doesn't it? Like it's hard not to be
- 1:25:53skeptical at some of the performances and then when you
- 1:25:56see things like this coming out 13 years later, like how does it
- 1:26:00take that long to on air fit? So then how can you trust what's
- 1:26:05happening? It's it's annoying because you
- 1:26:07want to be all in and you're a fan of the sport and stuff, but.
- 1:26:09Yeah. And it just means you, I know at
- 1:26:11the time when you see some of these things and they sort of
- 1:26:13don't make sense that you sort of for a little while, you
- 1:26:17always just accept them on face value because that's what you
- 1:26:20should do. And then nip it.
- 1:26:21Now you sort of get it. It's there's only so much where
- 1:26:24you get to the point where if you see something on face value
- 1:26:26and it looks. Too good to be true.
- 1:26:28You sort of assume that it is. Don't assume the, assume the
- 1:26:31other. Bit like with the Tour de France
- 1:26:34going on at the minute, isn't it?
- 1:26:36I've kind of been getting into it for the first time.
- 1:26:39I've never really followed it or watched it and I was reading the
- 1:26:42other day there was like 7 years that when Armstrong won it,
- 1:26:47they've just been wiped out of the results and they because of
- 1:26:50all the doping. That's absolutely crazy.
- 1:26:53Yeah, I used to be like, I used to follow it so closely during
- 1:26:57that time. And even some of the like, tours
- 1:27:01that followed, some of like the American or the top Americans
- 1:27:04that were riding not that long after.
- 1:27:05And some of these remarkable stages, like they'd get dropped
- 1:27:08and then somehow the very next day just right off the front.
- 1:27:11And I used to just be up late watching them just being like,
- 1:27:14wow, like the theater and how do they do that?
- 1:27:17Like you're not not knowing that how they were doing it was by
- 1:27:21doping. But like, yeah, ever since that
- 1:27:23I sort of, yeah, fell a bit out of love with the sport because
- 1:27:27you sort of you don't want to be fooled in what what you're
- 1:27:30watching. And also you know that some,
- 1:27:32there's a lot of Aussies like Perth has such a great cycling
- 1:27:35culture. Like they really punch above
- 1:27:36their weight when it comes to sort of professional cyclists.
- 1:27:39And you see these guys just riding as domestiques in the
- 1:27:42peloton giving it their all for years and years and years now.
- 1:27:45Don't really get much in terms of recognition.
- 1:27:47And you sort of know there's a lot of guys at the pointy end of
- 1:27:50those two as who aren't clean. And so makes the sport harder to
- 1:27:54follow. And you feel like athletics is
- 1:27:57getting a bit like that. The one perhaps good thing or
- 1:28:01something I noticed is that Pagacha who's like the main guy,
- 1:28:05isn't he probably like the best and probably the most famous as
- 1:28:09well to cook to go with that. So I was interested to see like
- 1:28:13kind of what, what he earns as being like the top cyclist.
- 1:28:17So I had a look and his contract at the minute is worth €50
- 1:28:20million / 6 years. Jesus, which is like top Premier
- 1:28:26League footballer salary and obscene money.
- 1:28:28And it makes you think do will run and follow suit like slowly.
- 1:28:33Is it going to edge towards that?
- 1:28:36Go on. Oh, I mean.
- 1:28:37Cycling's got a few things going for it though, doesn't it?
- 1:28:40Like those grand Tours, Like you can't see runners, Sort of.
- 1:28:42I mean, maybe you could just run for days and days and days.
- 1:28:45But then I think, what makes cycling more?
- 1:28:50Thrilling than than running. Not just not that we don't find
- 1:28:53running thrilling, obviously, but the the ability to the
- 1:28:58drafting element of cycling. So you can be 30% worse than a
- 1:29:03person, but then still basically ride the same as them.
- 1:29:06But if you just sit on their wheel, but the drafting elements
- 1:29:09of it, which means that basically, let's say you're 10%
- 1:29:12worse than like in performance, but you've said on someone's
- 1:29:16wheel all day, you know that it's possible that you can then
- 1:29:18out Sprint them towards or or drop them towards the back end
- 1:29:21of the race. And so all these like the, the
- 1:29:24drafting elements in cycling allow for athletes who aren't
- 1:29:27necessarily the fittest to outperform.
- 1:29:31You know, it's not a straight time trial.
- 1:29:33And so it sort of creates this game of strategy and game of
- 1:29:39chance that you sort of don't have in running, whereas running
- 1:29:42it becomes so much more absolute.
- 1:29:43So the, the I I I know now it's so well calculated in those
- 1:29:47grand tours that the best athletes often win.
- 1:29:49But if you have some of these one day stage races and even the
- 1:29:53stages themselves, there's so many permutations of outcome
- 1:29:56that it makes spectating quite exciting.
- 1:29:59Whereas with running it's it's often so known what the result
- 1:30:03will be because of past performance.
- 1:30:05So yes, I think it's got a bit going for it that I think
- 1:30:08running doesn't have do. You know the, the tour elements
- 1:30:11that actually in back home where I grew up, there's what's called
- 1:30:15the Tour of Merseyside. And I reckon it's, it must be
- 1:30:18one, one of its own. And it's a running event as
- 1:30:21well. It's over a week and I think
- 1:30:24they run either 5 or 6 days during the week.
- 1:30:28And there's a 5KA10KA half marathon, like an off road, 10
- 1:30:32mile and a couple of other distances.
- 1:30:36And it's the same sort of concept as as the Tour de
- 1:30:38France, like lowest cumulative time overall wins.
- 1:30:43And like when people get behind it and there's there's a few
- 1:30:45entries and stuff, it's like so interesting to follow.
- 1:30:49And you do think as a one off there's a place for an event
- 1:30:52like that. Isn't that like be cool?
- 1:30:55We have to get the, we have to partner with them.
- 1:30:58Tour tour of WA. That's it.
- 1:31:04We had the rumour mill that I haven't even asked Owen if we're
- 1:31:06allowed to say this and he's dropped off Now we we won't
- 1:31:10reveal any sources but Owen has become aware of some
- 1:31:16information. Do we say name or do we just
- 1:31:19allude to the fact? OK, so we'll say that Owen has
- 1:31:24received some information that a top Australian marathoner may
- 1:31:30have a foot injury and has been swimming recently.
- 1:31:34So don't know the source, don't know how true or untrue it is,
- 1:31:39which is why we're not giving any more details than that, but
- 1:31:42we'll just wait and see what comes of that.
- 1:31:44Hopefully nothing to be fair. Hopefully the athlete themselves
- 1:31:46are fine and it's a it's a bullshit rumour, but it was
- 1:31:50worth including. We had another listener
- 1:31:53question. Dean, I don't know if you have
- 1:31:55any thoughts on this. This came through from Rob,
- 1:31:57who's the captain of my running club at home, Wallasey, because
- 1:32:01he's trying to advocate for and push for lots of the members to
- 1:32:06take up cross country, because there's actually good cross
- 1:32:10country offering back home. Like they run a little bit of a
- 1:32:12season through the winter, local meets and you compete against
- 1:32:16other clubs and stuff. And he said nowadays there seems
- 1:32:20to be a decline in number of younger people participating in
- 1:32:22cross country at amateur level. Does it still have a vital role
- 1:32:26to play in readiness for the following season?
- 1:32:29Should coaches be encouraging it more?
- 1:32:31Yeah, I am. Yeah.
- 1:32:33It's a shame. So when I was in athletics, like
- 1:32:36in high school, we had a winter cross country season in Perth
- 1:32:42and that had a quite a good following and it was like both
- 1:32:45juniors and seniors and you'd run for your your club.
- 1:32:48We're sort of club athletics now outside of, you know, we have
- 1:32:51out those strive meets. So every Friday night over
- 1:32:54summer we have those meetings hosted.
- 1:32:56But the cross. Country scenes pretty much
- 1:32:59fallen away, almost like pretty much entirely in Perth.
- 1:33:02I think they've tried to re rebuild, reboot it a few times,
- 1:33:06but it doesn't have anywhere near the following than what it
- 1:33:10nowadays and what it used to. And that's not to say it's not
- 1:33:14important. It's just it's just the sport
- 1:33:16sort of just died. I think when I sort of read, you
- 1:33:19know, the, there's some great books out there like umm, Josh
- 1:33:25has quite a few of them, but he's let me like the UK runners
- 1:33:28of the 80s. It's like the you like, forget
- 1:33:30the exact title, but it's all these top British athletes of
- 1:33:34the 1980s. And you sort of read what they
- 1:33:36would do every sort of Saturday and then head out for their long
- 1:33:39run on a Sunday. And I, I sort sort of think like
- 1:33:42what we do in Kings Park on a Saturday morning.
- 1:33:44You imagine if that was your Saturday morning cross country
- 1:33:47that you did, you didn't have to take her into it, but you did
- 1:33:49hard work out and then did a long run Sunday, how good that
- 1:33:52would be for you. And I think that was sort of
- 1:33:54fairly commonplace. And even like Ron, I've got a
- 1:33:57copy of Ron Clark's book and you read how often he would race.
- 1:34:00Like a lot of people just raced a lot more, but they didn't race
- 1:34:03like major races, but they just raced their local races.
- 1:34:06And I think Victoria athlete athletics do it extremely well.
- 1:34:10Like do you have a, they Speaking of YouTube Diaries as a
- 1:34:13link, But the XCR, they do like a, they have a series of races
- 1:34:18over Victorian winter road and cross country and they do like a
- 1:34:22highlights package after each race.
- 1:34:25And those races are so well attended.
- 1:34:27Their clubs are so well represented.
- 1:34:29They have different divisions and they're done on a Saturday
- 1:34:33afternoon as well. So everyone can sort of travel
- 1:34:36and rock up to the mate. You can do that race and then
- 1:34:38you can still get out for your long.
- 1:34:39Run on a Sunday morning, so it's sort of not interfering with
- 1:34:42your training load. So I think it has a huge role to
- 1:34:44play. And and so encouraging people,
- 1:34:50particularly if they're put on at the right time, I think on a
- 1:34:52Saturday and you sort of create some sort of fun competition
- 1:34:56with them so that kids so that people are.
- 1:34:58Engaging and I think doing it side by side with juniors and
- 1:35:01seniors. I think a lot of the juniors,
- 1:35:03because junior cross country always seems to be reasonably
- 1:35:06well participated, but then all of a sudden it just falls away
- 1:35:09and there's no sort of connection there.
- 1:35:11I think if you did the junior races into senior races and you
- 1:35:13made it a community event, which it is.
- 1:35:17Then I think because I think some of the senior athletes
- 1:35:19would get down and sort of and be inspired by the junior
- 1:35:22athletes and vice versa. I think it's got a huge role to
- 1:35:24play. It's just a shame that it's
- 1:35:26fallen away. And so hopefully with this new
- 1:35:28running, you know, the second coming of running that maybe it
- 1:35:31comes back because I think it would be, yeah, I would be
- 1:35:33encouraging people to do it and I would be encouraged to do it
- 1:35:36if the sort of the scene was was here and happening in Perth.
- 1:35:40I think, yeah, I agree with everything you've said and a
- 1:35:43couple of points. Like traditionally the
- 1:35:45professional athletes would always periodize the years,
- 1:35:48wouldn't they? And they would have like their
- 1:35:50peaking phases and cross country would just be a part of like
- 1:35:54that strength building phase where they'd almost like forget
- 1:35:57about being in really fast shape or and they just get strong.
- 1:36:03And I feel like now the professionals probably still
- 1:36:06follow it and they do like the base training and strength work
- 1:36:09and stuff. But whereas kind of like that
- 1:36:11Subelite level and below almost down to like recreational
- 1:36:14runners, we're just so caught up on running times and chasing PBS
- 1:36:19that a lot of people probably just get sucked into just being
- 1:36:23in like 5K and 10K shape all year round.
- 1:36:27And you forget about the importance of actually just
- 1:36:29going back to like a base building phase.
- 1:36:31And that's where cross country comes into its own.
- 1:36:35And secondly, secondly on the XCR stuff, it's such a good
- 1:36:40series. Like that's one of the things
- 1:36:42Perth doesn't have, isn't it, in comparison to Melbourne or
- 1:36:46Victoria? Because I'm still actually in
- 1:36:48the group chat of the, the team that I ran for over there for a
- 1:36:52year. And they're in division two.
- 1:36:54And I think they've had like a really good result this weekend.
- 1:36:57And they're all like up and about saying like, oh, imagine,
- 1:36:59like we're in, we're a Division One club next year.
- 1:37:02And there was from like a bit of an insider perspective, you
- 1:37:06would have into club rivalries that you'd have those teams that
- 1:37:09you always finished either like just above or just below.
- 1:37:13And you'd be competing for promotion with them.
- 1:37:15And you'd like, you'd see their guys on the warm up and you'd be
- 1:37:18giving them evils and stuff like that.
- 1:37:21Like it's what makes it fun at the end of the day.
- 1:37:23It's what gets you out to these like muddy, muddy courses on a
- 1:37:27cold, wet winter's day, isn't it?
- 1:37:29Yep, Yep. And there'd always be a chalky
- 1:37:31milk afterwards and like a Mack of stuff on the way home.
- 1:37:35Yeah. And I think, yeah, I think
- 1:37:37there's an example of where it's done really well.
- 1:37:39And I feel like participation rates are higher than ever.
- 1:37:41So maybe there's a chance for it to be rebirthed.
- 1:37:44But certainly there's there's there's ways to make it
- 1:37:47innovative and connected. So hopefully someone that's a,
- 1:37:52you know, really passionate and innovative takes it on and it
- 1:37:56gets the right people behind it so it comes back.
- 1:37:58But it's interesting to hear. I thought maybe it was a bit
- 1:38:01more. Of a per thing.
- 1:38:01When I hear about the winter XCR being so successful, it's
- 1:38:04interesting to to hear Rob's comments about it sort of
- 1:38:07struggling for attraction in the UK as well.
- 1:38:10Yeah, I think he's trying to get some of the better runners in
- 1:38:13the club to take it more seriously or have a go at it.
- 1:38:17So I mean, there's there's our opinion with some reference to
- 1:38:20what happens locally here. Best get this episode wrapped up
- 1:38:25then. We're getting towards the end
- 1:38:26now. It's funny because with the
- 1:38:30episodes that Jake has featured on, you can see obviously
- 1:38:33clearly we've we've got some new listeners from that or well, at
- 1:38:37least on those episodes, we've got some new listeners and we
- 1:38:40know like kind of how loyal his his run to Japan army or
- 1:38:44whatever is. And in the episode analytic, you
- 1:38:47can actually see like where people choose to end the episode
- 1:38:51or where they drop off and literally like bang on where
- 1:38:55where Jake dropped off last week.
- 1:38:57We lose like almost half the listenership, but hopefully
- 1:39:02we've we've retained some of the army and they're now easy double
- 1:39:06listeners because I think a lot of them did stick towards the
- 1:39:08end as well. So thanks to any of the
- 1:39:11listeners who've stuck with us. I hope you've enjoyed it.
- 1:39:15And just to wrap back around to the the clubhouse, which we're
- 1:39:19trying to build, hopefully it's going to be think of like a
- 1:39:25modern version of let's run forum style messenger group chat
- 1:39:31in your hand on your phone where we can all talk about all these
- 1:39:35things, which we thankfully get to talk about on the podcast and
- 1:39:38tell you all our opinion. But yeah, hopefully we can
- 1:39:41create a space where everyone can tell us their opinion too.
- 1:39:45So looking forward to that and excited about it.
- 1:39:48Thanks for another week in the Easy Double podcast series.
- 1:39:52Let you get off to bed, Dean. That's it.
- 1:39:54Thanks mate. Thanks for chatting all.
- 1:39:55Right. Cheers guys.
