- 0:04Here's your daily industry news brief for February 24th. First,
- 0:08according to a C B S affiliate KTV report yesterday,
- 0:13new legislation in Colorado would offer annual mental health check-ins at public
- 0:17schools for students in sixth to 12th grade.
- 0:20Legislators say they picked this age group because most mental health challenges
- 0:23occurred during middle and high school.
- 0:26The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment will oversee the
- 0:29program and select the provider to conduct the screenings.
- 0:33The program would refer students to additional resources after the screening if
- 0:37needed. Students are not required to participate.
- 0:40Parents can also opt their children out. However,
- 0:43students 12 years and older can consent to the screening regardless of parental
- 0:47consent or notification. Some opponents do not agree with that.
- 0:52Lawmakers in support of the bill believe it's important for students to have
- 0:55other trusted adults besides parents or legal guardians to confide in.
- 1:00Opponents are also concerned with the funding for the program.
- 1:02It could cost over half a million dollars this year. Next year,
- 1:06it could cost over 17 million.
- 1:09Legislators estimate almost a quarter of schools will participate in the
- 1:13program. The bill was introduced last month.
- 1:16It's up for further discussion in the State's Committee on appropriations.
- 1:21Second,
- 1:21according to a Fort Worth star Telegram report yesterday for behavioral health
- 1:26will be allowed to reopen in 30 days.
- 1:28This follows an abrupt closure by Texas over child safety risks.
- 1:34The center was ordered to close its youth programs last month.
- 1:37Parents were forced to pick up their children the same day.
- 1:40To avoid involvement with the Department of Family and Protective Services.
- 1:43A total of 40 children were discharged from the facility.
- 1:47The center can admit children as soon as tomorrow, however,
- 1:50it will be placed under probation. For one year.
- 1:53Texas Health and Human Services Commission notified for behavioral health of two
- 1:58investigations involving allegations of child abuse, neglect, or exploitation.
- 2:03The Health and Human Services Commission say a poor behavioral staff member
- 2:07physically fought with a child.
- 2:09Staff had also failed to provide medical care to a child who was injured.
- 2:12While being restrained,
- 2:14a staff member pushed a child against a wall as discipline staff restrained
- 2:18children inappropriately. In several other instances,
- 2:22the commission required the facility to correct the offenses.
- 2:24Within three days of receiving notice,
- 2:27Fort Behavioral Health says they weren't given adequate notice.
- 2:30In a response to the agency, it says it denies the allegations.
- 2:35Third, here's how hospitals are maintaining happiness and mental health.
- 2:39According to a Medscape survey, published Wednesday,
- 2:42over half of hospitalists report,
- 2:44feeling very happy or someone happy away from work,
- 2:47this is a 30% decrease compared to before the pandemic.
- 2:51The survey's titled Hospitalist Lifestyle and Happiness Report 2023
- 2:56Contentment Amid Stress.
- 2:58It surveyed 10,000 providers and more than 20 specialties about how they're

- 3:05The collective US mental health has declined rapidly recently.
