Transcript
- 0:51SPEAKER_08: It is the October 16th edition of Too Many Men on the Mike.
- 0:56SPEAKER_08: And I'm just going to start this off and say, Coach, I might need some Afterlight to uh get me through this episode.
- 1:02SPEAKER_08: It's been a uh it's interesting week in uh in the household, uh, family passing, and with that comes lots of time, lots of energy, lots of emotions.
- 1:13SPEAKER_08: And uh I kind of think afterlight might help me.
- 1:17SPEAKER_08: So uh I might have to dig into that.
- 1:19SPEAKER_08: But uh we're here on yet another great episode of Too Many Men on the Mic.
- 1:26SPEAKER_08: And I can't wait to tell yet another story.
- 1:29SPEAKER_08: Not me, but our guest.
- 1:31SPEAKER_08: I feel like we had a great one with Jeff Gross last week talking about how they built a rink in uh in South Dakota with just like the neighborhood and everybody chipping in.
- 1:44SPEAKER_08: And I feel like we got another good story today.
- 1:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I'm super excited.
- 1:48SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, not only does Dale have this great uh story about entrepreneurism and connecting that with hockey, kind of like you know, a couple of guys I know trying to do the same thing, but you know, he's also a coach and he's coaching the girls' game, which I think if you've been a listener or watcher of the show, you know it's something that Drew and I have become very passionate about, especially as we've started to be starting to coach girls.
- 2:12SPEAKER_05: And I think you know, one of the things that we're always trying to do is get better as coaches and understand, you know, um how to communicate better with players.
- 2:20SPEAKER_05: And I'm excited to to hear Dale's story about uh crystal grip, but I'm all more excited to steal some good uh good tips from him because that's what we are here.
- 2:28SPEAKER_05: We're on the team.
- 2:29SPEAKER_08: So so when I first met Dale, uh he is uh a dad on my youngest son's youth hockey team, and we started talking uh just and getting to know each other.
- 2:41SPEAKER_08: And the minute he said crystal grip, I know you'll appreciate this, coach.
- 2:46SPEAKER_08: My first thought was there's a great rage against the machines.
- 2:50SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah.
- 2:51SPEAKER_05: Absolutely, absolutely.
- 2:53SPEAKER_08: And so I sent that to him, and I'm like, this should be the song pistol grip pump.
- 2:59SPEAKER_05: We might not we might not be able to, we might not be able to pick up.
- 3:02SPEAKER_05: We can't we have to cut it all the first 15 seconds, first 15 seconds of the song for a variety of reasons, especially if we want to try and monetize some ads.
- 3:11SPEAKER_08: But uh I sent that to him and I'm like, I have the perfect song for you.
- 3:16SPEAKER_08: We'll just call it Crystal Grip Pump, and we'll just tweak it a little bit, and uh and it'll become a thing.
- 3:23SPEAKER_08: So for all the listeners out there who might not be Rage Against the Machine fans like us, uh check out uh Pistol Grip Pump and uh put a K on it, and that just might be the theme song.
- 3:35SPEAKER_08: But uh without further ado, let's bring on Dale Kristolovich, who is the creator maker of Crystal Grip.
- 3:45SPEAKER_08: Dale, thanks for joining us.
- 3:48SPEAKER_08: Thanks for joining us, especially right before a hockey practice.
- 3:51SPEAKER_08: You got a good practice uh lined up for tonight?
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we got a great plan today, actually.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Coach Nicole put uh put out a pretty good one for the girls.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: Excellent.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: Absolutely a little video.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: Sorry, where are you guys skating tonight?
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: Fenton.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: Okay, and we have we're actually always at Fenton.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: So Lady Lip, Lady Liberty is always at Fenton, and uh we have the video room beforehand, so there should be a fun one.
- 4:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:13SPEAKER_08: So, Dale, before we get into Crystal Grip, tell us a little bit about your hockey journey.
- 4:18SPEAKER_08: Uh, I know just through our own conversations, but the listeners don't know this.
- 4:22SPEAKER_08: Uh, you you are a Canuck, and so tell us about your hockey journey.
- 4:27SPEAKER_08: Where did you grow up playing and uh how far did that take you?
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: Yes, um, I'm originally from Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: So right above Duluth, Minnesota.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: For those that don't know where Duluth is, I am six hours north of Minneapolis.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: So there you go.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: There's Thunder Bay.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: Um, about 106,000 population around there, and it's uh it's a little big town, uh, built on paper mills and built on hockey.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: Like I was literally born on skates.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: So that's it, it it doesn't it didn't stop there.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: I played uh up until I was 16.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: Uh I played some triple A, some double A when I was youth.
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: I was really, really good.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: I was young, young, young.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: And then um I found other passions.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: I actually had a golf scholarship here in town in St.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: Louis.
- 5:12SPEAKER_08: So hey Dale, what uh uh for the listeners out there, uh uh tell us uh what position did you play?
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: I was uh so Cam Neely.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: Anyone that knows Cam Neely.
- 5:23SPEAKER_05: Um humble brag coming up, I can feel it.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: 100% my favorite, favorite player.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: I was a pretty big, I was a pretty big uh winger.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: And then when I started to get into officiating, I was a level four officiator too by the time I was 18 and 19.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: I became a defenseman actually towards the end of it.
- 5:42SPEAKER_08: So power forward, I guess you could call me.
- 5:46SPEAKER_08: Hey Dale, you're bouncing a little bit on the uh connection.
- 5:50SPEAKER_08: You still there?
- 5:53SPEAKER_05: Let's see.
- 5:54SPEAKER_05: Hopefully.
- 5:55SPEAKER_05: There you go.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: So Cam Neely.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: Yes, I was more of your like Cam Nee, so my dad brought me up playing hockey.
- 6:03SPEAKER_01: He was a big time coach uh in Thunder Bay, Ontario as well.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: He did the Triple A Kings for a long time before we were even born.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: My brother and I were born.
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: So I uh I put I I was trying to go after that Cam Neely role on the team, and uh I was pretty effective for a lot of years actually.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: I tore my right knee, and then uh truly I picked up a golf club by the time I was 12 through 16, 17, and I became a scratch player and and I never looked back.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: I actually started doing officiating in hockey, became a level four officiator, and I still played.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: I still play double A high level and midget, and then that's when I kind of gave it up.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: I I still play two leagues today, so I'm I'm still involved.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: Good stuff.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: Where do you play?
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: Uh play a league in Brentwood, and then we play a Monday night pickup uh at the Shark Tank.
- 6:52SPEAKER_05: Nice.
- 6:53SPEAKER_05: Are you playing Sunday nights or Thursday nights at Brentwood?
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: I am playing Saturday nights at Brentwood.
- 6:59SPEAKER_05: Oh, okay.
- 6:59SPEAKER_05: I got I got to learn that league.
- 7:01SPEAKER_05: I'm not used to I don't know that league.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: Saturday night tilt.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's uh it's a Donny Brook out there, boys.
- 7:07SPEAKER_05: Nice, nice, nice.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, definitely.
- 7:10SPEAKER_08: I love it.
- 7:11SPEAKER_08: So, Dale, uh, tell us um what inspired Crystal Grip?
- 7:16SPEAKER_08: Where did this come from?
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: You know, it it's a unique story.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: I I'm in packaging sales.
- 7:21SPEAKER_01: Okay, that's what I do for my my day job.
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: And then every kid, and I guess adult, whatever you you always tear up your top hand, right?
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: Your top hand just gets torn up from grip tape.
- 7:35SPEAKER_01: It just does, it just naturally does, and it has since we were kids.
- 7:38SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: And and you got your natural leather on whatever it may be, uh cotton, a fabric, uh the standard hockey tape, you name it.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: And I just talking to my brother, too, like last year.
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: I got something I want you to try.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: I got something I want to try.
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: So our family tried it first, and it's uh it's a silicone tape that only adheres to itself, and it's like grippy.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: So when you grab it, it's grippy, but it's not too grippy.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: There's just enough tack.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: So we did this prototype run with it on this very firm compound.
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: It's it just became a firmer tape in the beginning, and we we softened it up a little bit, uh, increased attack, decreased attack, and now we kind of found that magical, magical moment.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: Uh, the cool thing is it uh it doesn't have any adhesive, it only like sticks to itself.
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: So the more you stretch it, the more of a bond you get with it.
- 8:31SPEAKER_01: It's uh it's it's actually it's quite fascinating.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: A lot of players today have some of my prototypes in their hands, and it's working, boys.
- 8:46SPEAKER_05: Oh, there was a little video there.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: There was a little video.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: There was a video there.
- 8:50SPEAKER_05: Grant's gonna have to work on his editing skills.
- 8:53SPEAKER_05: How does this I mean I I've had a chance to take a look at it.
- 8:56SPEAKER_05: We had some of our boys up, you know, you know, using it on Friday.
- 9:00SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, as we're as you're trying to like talk about this, I mean, is it basically you're saying that you know the holes you get in your top hands basically go away with this stuff?
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, your holes will it it, they probably won't diminish 100%, but they will decrease easily 50.
- 9:16SPEAKER_07: Wow.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: Easily, easily.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: Um, we have some of our better shooters, and I'm talking better shooters, I mean fully grown kids at the 15U level.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: I got a couple 16U players using it, and they're fully built boys, and they can they it's the as we all know it the torque you put on the top hand of a hockey stick is the most torque, right?
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: That's where you're kind of twisting, you're moving, you're grinding up there, and that's what's causing that felt and/or that material that you currently use in other brands that will tear it up.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: That and leather don't get along well, right?
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: That abrasion does not get along well.
- 9:50SPEAKER_08: So, Dale Dale, what I'm hearing you say is that you're saving youth hockey parents money.
- 9:56SPEAKER_08: I'm trying, trying, yes.
- 9:58SPEAKER_08: And the amount in a sport that is becoming increasingly more expensive, we're constantly talking about ways to uh make hockey more affordable.
- 10:10SPEAKER_08: And uh am I on track?
- 10:13SPEAKER_08: Uh your your your solution makes hockey more affordable, you're not gonna burn through as many gloves by using fruit.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: I mean, once you look at what happens when you blow out a top hand, you gotta replace the top hand with another bottom hand.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: So I guess you're right, Drew.
- 10:27SPEAKER_05: Well, talk a little bit about the the feel in the hand.
- 10:30SPEAKER_05: You know, we had some kids that were actually putting it on top of the cloth tape so they could still get that feel there.
- 10:36SPEAKER_05: I mean, you know, you're getting into torque and all sorts of scientific stuff, but from a feel standpoint, talk a little bit about what you know a player can expect.
- 10:45SPEAKER_05: Is it gonna change that feel other than the fact that you're not gonna have a big hole in the palm of your hand?
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it does.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: It's so if you talk to those boys or gals, who's ever using it, they will probably tell you in the course of three or four times they've used it, it's it's got a great feel.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: It has a phenomenal feel.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: It's like when you drag your hand up, it stops.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: Like it's actually there's a tack there, right?
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: There really is.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: It's sticky, it can be sticky.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: Um the feel itself for the youth side of things, you don't need to put an underwrap underneath it.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: You just put it right to the stick.
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: Okay, you can do the build-ups right from there, too.
- 11:21SPEAKER_01: Um, for those that like to put those grooves where you have your finger holes, like your finger, you know, the the grooves, you can you twist the the hockey tape and you can actually make I definitely recommend that.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: Do that really and then put this right on top of that.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: Yes, correct.
- 11:36unknown: Wow.
- 11:37SPEAKER_08: So I I I really just am curious.
- 11:40SPEAKER_08: Uh I inquiring minds want to know how have your men's hockey stats improved as you've been using crystal grip.
- 11:49SPEAKER_08: Uh, what what what is your point?
- 11:51SPEAKER_08: What were your points per game before and what are they now?
- 11:55SPEAKER_01: Okay, wait, wait, wait.
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: When I adopted the Tyler Tucker stick that is from Thunder Bay, Ontario, I might add.
- 12:04SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 12:04SPEAKER_01: When I when I adopted that stick, I have a cannon now.
- 12:09SPEAKER_05: Um we better get a quarter out and make sure that that that curve is legit.
- 12:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: Um a lot of the guys in the men's team do use it.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: And um, in fact, the one of the gentlemen that we play with uh owns cactus peats, and he'll be probably the very first uh customer of ours.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: So oh, excellent.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: We're looking forward to that.
- 12:30SPEAKER_05: Well, talk a little bit about that.
- 12:31SPEAKER_05: What's the lead time?
- 12:32SPEAKER_05: What's the go-to-market on this?
- 12:34SPEAKER_05: Because you know, we want to be uh as helpful as possible and getting the work on and getting people going to the right places.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: So now that we are where we are today, so we're through the prototype stage, which is which is the fun stage, right?
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: It's it's the you get to trial and error and test it and fix this and do this.
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: Um, we're at the stage now where we're teaching people how to join colors because you could take a red, white, and blue, and you can because since the tape only attaches to itself, there's a lot of learning that's going on.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: Um, you have to teach someone how to put it on correctly.
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: And by word of mouth, right now, it's getting it's getting around.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: So it's it's now start starting to get the portal going, get the online access going and that and that sort of thing.
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: We're hoping by the end of October we will have start taking pre-orders, maybe even before that.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: Start taking pre-orders and get this get this baby rolling.
- 13:27SPEAKER_05: Well, I think Grant's gonna have some videos here to show us.
- 13:29SPEAKER_05: Let's take a look at that.
- 13:31SPEAKER_05: We'll talk a little bit about your girls' team.
- 13:33SPEAKER_01: You bet.
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: I'll hear it right back with belt.
- 14:21SPEAKER_01: You got it.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: We're good.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: Hey, now get some white tape.
- 14:28SPEAKER_05: Right on there.
- 14:30SPEAKER_08: I I love the focus, and uh, I I have to agree with Coach, the two different colored socks.
- 14:35SPEAKER_08: I I mean had it had it.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: I can't wait for tonight to see what's gonna happen tonight.
- 14:41SPEAKER_05: Well, tell us a little bit about that that journey to coaching girls.
- 14:44SPEAKER_05: You know, you've got a son who's playing uh, you know, for Afton Central States.
- 14:49SPEAKER_05: Your daughter is, I'm assuming your daughter are you just coaching the team that plays for the Lady Liberty.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: Yes, I am uh one of the assistant coaches there because my son plays uh and I like to travel with him and the team.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, Lady Liberty League.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: We're 12U.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: Uh this is my first year with this staff, coaching with this staff.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: I actually took last year off.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: I was a Mohawk representative.
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: Uh, if you guys didn't know that, I just I was also a disciplinary board, all that kind of stuff.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: So I always volunteer where it's fun.
- 15:19SPEAKER_05: We never cross paths.
- 15:20SPEAKER_01: No, we don't, see?
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Michigan boy.
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: No, we don't.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: Uh I always set something up that if I'm gonna volunteer, it's gotta be fun, right?
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: Nobody wants to volunteer where it's not, and uh coaching is truly one of my passions, there's no question.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: Um, this year is uh my daughter is 12, so she is a major on a pee-wee team.
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: Last year was her first year at Lady Liberty, so she was 11, and they had quite a bit of coaches there.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: I did help out with uh edgework last year.
- 15:51SPEAKER_05: Oh, great, yeah.
- 15:53SPEAKER_05: So had so have you coached your daughter and have you?
- 15:56SPEAKER_05: I mean, obviously it was a lot probably co-ed as she was younger, but have you coached all girl teams before?
- 16:02SPEAKER_05: Or is this kind of your first foray into that?
- 16:04SPEAKER_05: Talk a little bit about that experience.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: This is so I did a 4v4 team throughout the summer, all girls myself.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: I was the lead on that.
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: Um, before that, prior to that, I've been coaching my daughter's team for six years, and that was co-ed.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: And I've always sprinkled in a few girls on that team as well, right?
- 16:23SPEAKER_01: I'd always have a few, but so we started in the co-ed sector first, and then I we graduated to the all-girls team last year, so and then I took those minors from last year and brought them onto a 4v4 team, and um, I think the direction now is solid.
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: So we're all together.
- 16:42SPEAKER_08: Dale, what do you think?
- 16:44SPEAKER_08: Uh what role does hockey play that you've experienced with these girls uh over your six years now and building uh confidence, uh leadership, uh friendship.
- 16:57SPEAKER_08: What's been your experience as a coach?
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: For the girls, yeah.
- 17:05SPEAKER_01: I gotta tell you, it it's a totally different scene in the co-ed sector.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: It really is.
- 17:11SPEAKER_01: That that whole piece, uh, the girls' camaraderie is second to none.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: It it is unbelievable how much support they give one another, how they push one another, uh their willingness to serve.
- 17:29SPEAKER_01: Is that you know, you know, like they just serve one another.
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: It is amazing how quickly they adapt and pick up on things, and they help one another.
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: It's phenomenal.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: Uh it's almost like a really good ref that knows how to fail forward, like they're learning from their mistakes and they can pick up on it, adapt really quickly when it's all girls.
- 17:54SPEAKER_01: I if that makes sense.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: Uh they they just have an ability to to pick up on things that I've noticed is a little different than the boys.
- 18:03SPEAKER_05: How does it help you develop as a coach?
- 18:05SPEAKER_05: You know, we've got a couple of coaching friends who've coached who are female coaches who've coached girls' teams, and they've got some great pointers in terms of communication.
- 18:15SPEAKER_05: But as a as a hockey coach yourself, how's it helped you in in your opinion, round out your skill set as a coach and a communicator?
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so they've curved me quite a bit on the positive.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: Uh they the girls have definitely curved me quite a bit on the positive side.
- 18:33SPEAKER_01: Now we'll tell you what I mean by that.
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: I also had my son, my older son, I coach him as well, right?
- 18:39SPEAKER_01: When you have boys, it's like there's something about the level of passion that a coach can bring to the team, right?
- 18:46SPEAKER_01: And I'm that passion guy.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: I'm the I'm the player's coach, I'm the guy that gets in their noodle and understands what they're going through as a player, and I can get down to their level and speak their language.
- 18:56SPEAKER_01: So it is a little different when after you're done that conversation on the bench or at practice, it's more on the bench during a game when your passion comes out.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: But as you stand up and you're looking down and you say something out loud, you got to be very careful how what kind of audibles come out of your mouth because it you're looking down, next thing you know, you know, there's 12 to 14, 15 daughters right there.
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: Uh hockey's a passionate game, and I will tell you, if you if you deliver the goods to your team, they will deliver for you.
- 19:26SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 19:26SPEAKER_08: That's a great ism right there.
- 19:28SPEAKER_08: Yeah, right.
- 19:30SPEAKER_08: Dale, what's one thing that every youth hockey parent of a daughter should know?
- 19:41SPEAKER_01: Never stay down, get back up.
- 19:43SPEAKER_01: I mean, truly, um, there's something about a little boy fallen, and there's something about a little girl falling.
- 19:49SPEAKER_01: And I'm I have a boy and a girl, a daughter, and a son.
- 19:52SPEAKER_01: And as a dad, you know, as a dad, you can only speak for this.
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: That when your girl falls, you're like, oh, you know, and then but if they get back up, that smile on their face when they excel, I mean, let them grind.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: Let them figure it out.
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: Go in the corners, come out with the puck.
- 20:09SPEAKER_08: Secondism, let them grind.
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: Let them let them grind.
- 20:13SPEAKER_01: You have to let them figure out how to how to get in the corners, come out of the come out there with a puck on their stick with a smile on their face, or whatever it may be.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: Teach them how to tip it in.
- 20:23SPEAKER_07: Oh, yeah.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 20:25SPEAKER_01: Girls are they're they're the same, they're built the same.
- 20:29SPEAKER_05: We've coached some girls.
- 20:31SPEAKER_05: We've got a young lady who's on our high school team right now, made varsity as a as a as a player, and she's one of the tougher, she's just tough.
- 20:38SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 20:38SPEAKER_05: Um, willing to get back up.
- 20:40SPEAKER_05: So this is the reason why we actually brought John here.
- 20:43SPEAKER_05: Want to get you like your favorite drill to run.
- 20:46SPEAKER_05: Um these players.
- 20:47SPEAKER_05: And just because we're, you know, this is a little section of our of our we uh we have a little section of our show here.
- 20:54SPEAKER_05: We call it the drill draw, brought to you by Drift Hockey.
- 20:57SPEAKER_05: Drift hockey, built from the bench, uh, the all-in-one hockey tool.
- 21:00SPEAKER_05: And so we're gonna have a little fun here and uh give you the uh virtual whiteboard.
- 21:05SPEAKER_05: And we have about five minutes here before you have to head over.
- 21:08SPEAKER_08: And let's uh let's yeah, and we're gonna and we're gonna name the drill after you.
- 21:13SPEAKER_05: We're gonna name the drill after you as well.
- 21:15SPEAKER_05: So this is this is this is basically how Drew and I keep this whole show afloat by stealing from uh stealing from other coaches.
- 21:23SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: You're saying a whiteboard is gonna appear on my screen.
- 21:27SPEAKER_01: It is.
- 21:28SPEAKER_05: There you go.
- 21:28SPEAKER_05: There it is.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: Let me see this.
- 21:31SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 21:32SPEAKER_05: There we go.
- 21:32SPEAKER_05: All right, so it is your whiteboard.
- 21:35SPEAKER_05: You tell me where to put tell me where to put the nets and tell me where to put the players.
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: I do an obstacle course.
- 21:44SPEAKER_05: Ooh, all right.
- 21:45SPEAKER_01: And hold on, hold on.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: And it's timed against yourself.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: So we have multiple coaches, the whole team, you name it, and it's truly a skating obstacle course.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: One with the puck, one without the puck.
- 22:00SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: And you can actually teach them how to cut, get tight around the cones, isn't that?
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: So I'm an edge work guy, as I expressed earlier.
- 22:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: I can actually host before I even get to your thing here.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: I can actually host an entire practice without a girl touching a puck and they don't realize how much fun they're having.
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: But number two, challenge accepted.
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: They I will trust me.
- 22:23SPEAKER_01: Um I'm trying to scroll in here, but we typically get half sheets, right?
- 22:29SPEAKER_01: Okay, perfect.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: We get half sheets for the most part.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: So from the blue line in, uh, I typically skate them forward down from dot to dot.
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: Then they have to transition all the way back to the next circle.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: So the next dot, to the face-off dot.
- 22:50SPEAKER_05: So let's uh let's let's set this up here.
- 22:52SPEAKER_05: We start in let's put a player.
- 22:54SPEAKER_05: Let's put a player out there to kind of get us started.
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: No, no, blue line.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: Blue line up by that dot.
- 23:01SPEAKER_05: Right here.
- 23:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:02SPEAKER_05: Okay, perfect.
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: So let's I'd run them.
- 23:05SPEAKER_01: I'd I'd actually be in the in between the red in between the red line and blue line.
- 23:09SPEAKER_01: A little to the right.
- 23:10SPEAKER_01: A little to my right might be your laugh.
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure.
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you bet.
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: Right there.
- 23:14SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 23:15SPEAKER_01: You would say go.
- 23:17unknown: Okay.
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: And you would skate to the face-off dot on the other, on the other side.
- 23:22SPEAKER_01: No, no, no.
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: Down towards me.
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: Down, down, down, down.
- 23:25SPEAKER_05: So this this this face-off dot here.
- 23:27SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 23:28SPEAKER_01: Yes, down.
- 23:29SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: In transition.
- 23:31SPEAKER_05: So we're coming down here and we're opening up.
- 23:37SPEAKER_05: Are we transitioning to?
- 23:40SPEAKER_05: Coming back?
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: Yep, coming back to the faceoff dot on the other side.
- 23:44SPEAKER_05: Alright.
- 23:46SPEAKER_01: Where am I?
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: Nope.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: Faceoff dot on the by the by the uh circle.
- 23:55SPEAKER_05: Oh, down here?
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:56SPEAKER_05: Gotcha.
- 23:58SPEAKER_01: No, it's actually up the other side.
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry.
- 24:01SPEAKER_01: The other faceoff dot.
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: You're skating backwards all the way back up there.
- 24:05SPEAKER_05: Ah, skating backwards.
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so you're transitioning, so you're going backwards all the way back up top to the next circle.
- 24:10SPEAKER_01: You put a cone there.
- 24:11SPEAKER_05: It's right here.
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: Sure, that'll work.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: Let's do that one.
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: Come back to now.
- 24:15SPEAKER_01: Now you you transition back to forward.
- 24:19SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 24:20SPEAKER_05: Back to forward.
- 24:22SPEAKER_01: So you're going around that corner, around that dot, going back to forward to the bottom circle, to the bottom corner, faceoff dot.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: Bottom left corner, faceoff dot.
- 24:32SPEAKER_05: So down here.
- 24:33SPEAKER_01: Let me just uh angle, angle all the way down.
- 24:36SPEAKER_05: Yep, yeah, yeah, yep.
- 24:36SPEAKER_01: Gotcha.
- 24:38SPEAKER_05: Let's make sure we've got that.
- 24:40SPEAKER_01: And you're going so now you're buzzing.
- 24:42SPEAKER_01: Now you're going forward and you're buzzing.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: You're doing a sharp turn right there, still staying forward.
- 24:47unknown: Okay.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: Still staying forward, going to the next face-off circle.
- 24:52SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 24:52SPEAKER_01: And as soon as you hit the circle, you have to go backwards.
- 24:56SPEAKER_01: So you transition to backwards.
- 24:58SPEAKER_05: Gotcha.
- 24:59SPEAKER_01: Where am I going to the the the you're going around the circle?
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: He's actually just going around the actual circle.
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: You'll have little mini cones going around that circle.
- 25:07SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 25:09SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 25:09SPEAKER_01: Right here.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: You will jump, you will jump a pad right there.
- 25:15SPEAKER_01: And I actually set up, I set up a um a finish line.
- 25:20SPEAKER_01: Yes, you have a jump a pad.
- 25:22SPEAKER_01: Oh, I love it.
- 25:23SPEAKER_01: We got pads.
- 25:23SPEAKER_01: We got pads out.
- 25:24SPEAKER_05: Love it.
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: You'll jump a pad and you'll have a finish line.
- 25:28SPEAKER_05: So we jump a pad.
- 25:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:31SPEAKER_05: And then where's your finish line?
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: Well, you jump it, yeah, right there.
- 25:35SPEAKER_01: So you jump once you get you jump a pad, you're gonna back up towards the blue line.
- 25:38SPEAKER_01: So behind where you start.
- 25:40SPEAKER_01: So back, yeah, up and up.
- 25:43SPEAKER_01: And you jump a pad.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: Now you do that with a puck, you remove the pad.
- 25:47SPEAKER_05: Gotcha.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: So I'll tell you what, you take that same drill, yep, you reverse it and flip it on the other side of the rink.
- 25:55SPEAKER_01: You're using all the other edge work, all the other edges.
- 25:58SPEAKER_05: Mirror image of it.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: You're mirroring it.
- 26:00SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 26:00SPEAKER_01: Love it.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: So what I do is I take the girls' time here with and without a puck, do you know four trials?
- 26:07SPEAKER_01: Two with a puck, two without a puck.
- 26:09SPEAKER_01: Then I flip it and I mirror it and get them on the other edges.
- 26:12SPEAKER_05: Gotcha.
- 26:12SPEAKER_01: So then I take those notes with Nicole, and we kind of determine what players need to work on what edge work.
- 26:20SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 26:21SPEAKER_01: So it's it listen, it is fun, man.
- 26:23SPEAKER_01: It's a blast because what you get?
- 26:26SPEAKER_01: What time did you get?
- 26:26SPEAKER_01: What time did you get?
- 26:27SPEAKER_01: What time did you get?
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: But they don't realize they're learning, and they don't realize that they're really skating against themselves.
- 26:33SPEAKER_08: And Dale, you well, you're can you race them over on the other side?
- 26:37SPEAKER_08: You're timing them.
- 26:38SPEAKER_08: So you got a team out there.
- 26:40SPEAKER_08: Do you kind of stagger it to where one can start or the next player in line can start when they get down to the Drew?
- 26:48SPEAKER_01: You you've nailed it.
- 26:49SPEAKER_01: I usually have three coaches and run them in threes.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: One ten seconds later, do another one.
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: Technically, another one.
- 26:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: And if you fall, we'll we'll we erase.
- 26:59SPEAKER_01: No, we just erase it, come back.
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: We you get one mulligan.
- 27:03SPEAKER_01: Oh, there's the golfism.
- 27:04SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: Love it.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 27:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, one mul if the molly works, it works.
- 27:08SPEAKER_01: If it doesn't work, too bad.
- 27:09SPEAKER_08: All right, Dale, you got to get to practice.
- 27:11SPEAKER_08: Now you get an opportunity to coin this drill.
- 27:13SPEAKER_08: What are we gonna call it?
- 27:15SPEAKER_08: I don't know.
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: Um Dale's what?
- 27:18SPEAKER_01: Dale's what you got to name Crystal, right?
- 27:21SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 27:23SPEAKER_01: We gotta go uh crystal race.
- 27:26SPEAKER_05: All right, well, crystal race.
- 27:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 27:30SPEAKER_01: Are you gonna steal this one?
- 27:31SPEAKER_01: You of course, of course, we are going up on the website.
- 27:34SPEAKER_05: We're gonna allow for this to every use in this to practice on Friday.
- 27:38SPEAKER_01: So I gotta tell you something about this.
- 27:39SPEAKER_05: This gets offered to everybody.
- 27:40SPEAKER_01: Okay, here you go.
- 27:41SPEAKER_01: You ready for this one?
- 27:42SPEAKER_01: I'll give you guys a little tip.
- 27:43SPEAKER_01: The firmer the ice, the faster you go.
- 27:48SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 27:48SPEAKER_01: And the firmer the ice, you know who has the worst edges.
- 27:52SPEAKER_05: That's a good point.
- 27:53SPEAKER_05: That's a good point.
- 27:54SPEAKER_01: Probably Coach Ballet.
- 27:56SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 27:58SPEAKER_01: Um, I will tell you that that's a good one.
- 28:00SPEAKER_01: I I also do the edgeword practices, those are a lot of fun.
- 28:03SPEAKER_01: Um, we're working on shooting tonight.
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: You guys were doing uh uh we're actually putting targets in.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: Um, we use the app called Huddle.
- 28:13SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, that's a good app.
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: And um me not so technologically savvy like my coaches are.
- 28:20SPEAKER_01: We looked at all the stats of where our shots were.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: Uh, we played up at Chicago, we played locally here in St.
- 28:27SPEAKER_01: Louis.
- 28:27SPEAKER_01: Uh, we're a good little team, actually.
- 28:29SPEAKER_01: I think we have five or six wins and a couple losses.
- 28:31SPEAKER_01: We had a good little team, and I'll tell you, we're we shoot 80% of the time, probably uh low.
- 28:38SPEAKER_01: So today we're gonna put some targets up and we're gonna figure this out.
- 28:41SPEAKER_05: Well, I'll tell you what, um, go to our site.
- 28:45SPEAKER_05: We've got drills from people all over the country, USA hockey folks, people as far away as Alaska, people as far away as Sweden, putting drills on our on up on our site.
- 28:55SPEAKER_05: We've got a coach's room and a coach's corner where uh you can download all these, and crystal race will be up there at the end of our show here today.
- 29:02SPEAKER_05: So yeah, for sure.
- 29:05SPEAKER_08: So Gail, we want to get you uh on time to your practice.
- 29:09SPEAKER_08: Thanks so much for joining us today.
- 29:10SPEAKER_08: Thanks for telling us uh your story around Crystal Grip, and we can't wait to hear about the launch as we get closer to the end of the month.
- 29:20SPEAKER_08: Sounds like it's right around the corner.
- 29:22SPEAKER_01: We will get you and your team involved.
- 29:23SPEAKER_01: Thank you very much, Dalen.
- 29:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah, congrats.
- 29:26SPEAKER_05: Uh have a great season, and we'll talk soon, man.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: All right, thank you.
- 29:29SPEAKER_01: Appreciate you, Jerry.
- 29:30SPEAKER_01: Thanks for having me.
- 29:34SPEAKER_05: Crystal grip, pump.
- 29:36SPEAKER_08: I I I I think uh I mean, I could I could it's it just rage against the machine, and that song just goes along with it.
- 29:45SPEAKER_05: We just have to we could probably get Tom Morello to give us uh give us the copyright, you know, abilities and or what if we could reach out to Tom Morello and he could do uh uh alternate version of it.
- 29:56SPEAKER_08: You think you'd do that for us?
- 29:58SPEAKER_05: I mean, we could figure it out.
- 29:59SPEAKER_05: I'm sure we can find I mean we we figured out that six degrees of separation for us is more like four.
- 30:04SPEAKER_08: So I'm sure we know somebody that knows somebody that knows somebody that knows Tom Morello, right?
- 30:08SPEAKER_08: Well, well, nice job, coach, on uh pulling the uh uh the rabbit out of the hat there on uh seizing the day on a drill.
- 30:15SPEAKER_05: Hey, you know, when we have a coach on, I and and you know, you put the questions together, he said, What's your favorite drill?
- 30:21SPEAKER_05: I'm like, Well, we're just gonna draw it.
- 30:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you know, he was like, What are we doing here?
- 30:25SPEAKER_05: I don't know about that huddle thing.
- 30:26SPEAKER_05: We might have to get him going, get him on drift.
- 30:28SPEAKER_05: There's there's to get him going on drift for sure.
- 30:32SPEAKER_05: But uh no, it just seems like a phenomenal guy.
- 30:34SPEAKER_05: I love the fact that he's I mean, he's kind of like us.
- 30:37SPEAKER_05: He's like, I'm just gonna go coach.
- 30:39SPEAKER_08: I'm just gonna go have fun and coach, and you know, yeah, and and and I love that he's discovered a solution around a need.
- 30:47SPEAKER_08: I mean, how many times have you seen your kids have one good glove and one bad glove?
- 30:52SPEAKER_08: And it is that top grip hand where it happens.
- 30:55SPEAKER_08: So here's a guy with a solution that uh I'll say it is gonna make hockey more affordable.
- 31:00SPEAKER_08: Your gloves are gonna last longer.
- 31:02SPEAKER_08: So I can't wait to hear more about it.
- 31:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, if you if you have to go through and and you buy one less pair of gloves, I mean, right now that's 120 bucks, right?
- 31:11SPEAKER_05: Easily.
- 31:12SPEAKER_08: All right, that's 120 bucks more for you.
- 31:14SPEAKER_05: That's right.
- 31:14SPEAKER_05: You know, and then the crystal grip, I'm just it doesn't cost 120 bucks for crystal grip.
- 31:19SPEAKER_05: So nah, super, super cool story.
- 31:22SPEAKER_05: Um, great little product that we uh we had a chance to try out um on the rink last Friday.
- 31:27SPEAKER_05: A couple of the players, I think they all were pretty, you know, like this is a pretty legit product.
- 31:31SPEAKER_08: Now he did bring up the mulligan piece, which makes me wonder is there a crystal grip for golf clubs?
- 31:38SPEAKER_08: I mean Grant, Grant, get in here.
- 31:42SPEAKER_04: I mean, you can use oh no, I'm right.
- 31:45SPEAKER_04: You could probably put crystal grip around the colour.
- 31:48SPEAKER_08: You could probably put crystal grip around a golf club, couldn't you?
- 31:51SPEAKER_03: I use baseball wrap on my putter.
- 31:53SPEAKER_03: My putter like fell see the grip fell off.
- 31:56SPEAKER_03: It's the same thing.
- 31:57SPEAKER_03: I had a friend who played high-level baseball, um, like Division II baseball, and he said he used tennis wrap on his bats instead of baseball wrap.
- 32:07SPEAKER_03: Like said he just felt it was better gripped and everything.
- 32:11SPEAKER_08: Did you notice how he just like deflected when I asked him how his stats had improved in Men's League?
- 32:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and he kind of he he kind of didn't like I think he was just being modest.
- 32:21SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he's probably being modest.
- 32:23SPEAKER_05: He's like, Ah, you know, I was I was you know two points a game, now I'm 2.2.
- 32:28SPEAKER_05: I mean, I don't know what to say.
- 32:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, hey, that's that point two is important.
- 32:31SPEAKER_08: Absolutely, yeah.
- 32:32SPEAKER_08: But uh, but uh he uh he passed it on to the team on that one.
- 32:36SPEAKER_08: Yeah, expecting I was expecting a stat there, but you know it's a prototype, so you know, more I was I was more data to come.
- 32:43SPEAKER_05: I was more intrigued about Saturday night at Brentwood.
- 32:46SPEAKER_05: I played Thursdays and Sundays, I never played Saturday night.
- 32:49SPEAKER_08: And there's a Wednesday night league at Brentwood, too.
- 32:51SPEAKER_08: So yeah, but Saturday.
- 32:53SPEAKER_05: No, Saturdays.
- 32:54SPEAKER_05: What's going on there?
- 32:56SPEAKER_05: You gotta believe Obi Clarks is making some coin that night.
- 32:59SPEAKER_05: Or train wreck.
- 33:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah, Obi Clarks are train wrecks.
- 33:02SPEAKER_05: The local grant wouldn't know any of these because he can't find his way north of uh 44.
- 33:06SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 33:06SPEAKER_05: He's I'm familiar.
- 33:10SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you're familiar with the train wreck, right?
- 33:13SPEAKER_05: No, Obi Clarks.
- 33:14SPEAKER_05: Of course, never bet, never bet.
- 33:16SPEAKER_05: Well, you know, we're coming off of uh um, I mean, last night was the frozen frenzy, so all 32 teams playing with 16 games going on.
- 33:24SPEAKER_05: Spoiler alert, the Philadelphia Flyers still haven't won a game yet.
- 33:29SPEAKER_05: Rough, rough, rough.
- 33:30SPEAKER_05: But uh Grant, you know, uh Grant, get back on here, man.
- 33:34SPEAKER_05: I mean I'm sorry.
- 33:34SPEAKER_05: I'm I've got to go back to the back.
- 33:36SPEAKER_05: Well, let's think about this for a second.
- 33:37SPEAKER_05: Like, you know, we had Frozen Frenzy last night.
- 33:41SPEAKER_05: Did any did you watch any of the games?
- 33:43SPEAKER_03: I did.
- 33:44SPEAKER_03: I had uh the I had a football, I have a three TV set up in my office.
- 33:50SPEAKER_03: I had a football game on, I had the baseball game on.
- 33:54SPEAKER_03: Tuesday night football game?
- 33:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, college football.
- 33:57SPEAKER_03: Which like a Mac team?
- 33:59SPEAKER_03: It was Jacksonville State versus FIU.
- 34:03SPEAKER_03: That's how much you love.
- 34:06SPEAKER_05: That's that's impressive.
- 34:07SPEAKER_03: And then I had the Frozen Frenzy wraparound show on ESPN 2 on.
- 34:12SPEAKER_03: Isn't that cool?
- 34:13SPEAKER_03: That was cool.
- 34:13SPEAKER_03: I like that.
- 34:14SPEAKER_05: They do a pretty good job of uh of simulating the March Madness opening weekend when they have that.
- 34:19SPEAKER_03: What they should do is just get Scott Hansen on, though.
- 34:21SPEAKER_03: Now that ESPN and FL Network are Fore Boxes! Ramoto Quad!
- 34:26SPEAKER_05: He is uh Steve Lavy did a nice job, but Scott Hansen is the undisputed best whip around person there is in all of and for our listeners at home who are not familiar with NFL Red Zone, who is Scotty, yeah, right, yeah, right.
- 34:43SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he's the man from NFL Red NFL, and it's like I always remember who's like, we're gonna go four box right now.
- 34:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's just the best.
- 34:50SPEAKER_05: Quad box, he calls it a quad box.
- 34:52SPEAKER_05: Quad box, quad box.
- 34:53SPEAKER_08: Well, I'll be the homer and I'll just say uh I was watching the blues game last night with my boys.
- 34:59SPEAKER_08: We found it, and before the game started, yes, we found it.
- 35:03SPEAKER_08: You gotta find it on Prime Video with a subscription.
- 35:06SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 35:06SPEAKER_08: Uh, when we found it, uh, I said, this before the game started, I said the blues need like a game where they just whoop a team and they delivered last night.
- 35:18SPEAKER_08: They went up to Ottawa and they put a beating on the Senators, uh, seven to two.
- 35:23SPEAKER_08: Uh, lots of goals, uh, which was nice to see.
- 35:28SPEAKER_08: And uh uh, you know, it's it's a great time to be a hockey fan and just a sports fan in general.
- 35:35SPEAKER_08: I mean, there's so many things that are on TV right now, but a great slate last night, and the blues uh delivered last night on goals.
- 35:42SPEAKER_08: Yeah, we'll we'll we'll hang seven anytime on somebody.
- 35:45SPEAKER_05: Well, I mean, I think that's more than half of their entire goal production for the prior games, isn't it?
- 35:52SPEAKER_08: Careful coach, how are the red wings doing?
- 35:54SPEAKER_06: Dude, the red wings are shallow I walked right into that.
- 36:07SPEAKER_05: I did.
- 36:08SPEAKER_05: I did, I did, I did.
- 36:09SPEAKER_05: Hey, I I I do like your I love it.
- 36:12SPEAKER_08: You got rage baited by it, it's true.
- 36:14SPEAKER_08: He got his first goal, he got his first goal, and his first goal, more important, it is just a yet another reminder that when somebody goes down, the next guy is up, and they had two defensive injuries, uh, two kind of key guys that the team was counting on, and they uh said, you know what, it's early in the season.
- 36:34SPEAKER_08: We're gonna bring this guy up, we're gonna see what he looks like, and he gets his first uh goal last night.
- 36:40SPEAKER_08: So good for him.
- 36:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he got robbed against Dallas where he had the goal, and then they got a call back for offsides.
- 36:45SPEAKER_05: I I've I've liked that kid since watching him in game one.
- 36:48SPEAKER_05: I think I remember and pull the text up.
- 36:50SPEAKER_05: You want to talk about a blues fan here?
- 36:52SPEAKER_05: Let's talk about a blues fan here.
- 36:53SPEAKER_05: Pull the text up.
- 36:54SPEAKER_05: I called you after their game against Dallas, and I was like, I love the way they're playing.
- 36:59SPEAKER_05: I love how they're playing like a bunch of rats tonight and getting in front and getting dirty.
- 37:04SPEAKER_08: And just an observation, I'm not trying to generate any controversy here, but uh Hoford in that again, and this team plays good when Hoford's in that.
- 37:12SPEAKER_08: It I don't know.
- 37:14SPEAKER_08: Uh, Bennington's a question mark right now, uh, but it's a very small sample size.
- 37:19SPEAKER_08: Yeah, so uh uh more to come on that, but uh a nice one last night.
- 37:24SPEAKER_05: Well, and if we are going to talk about the Red Wings, they did just sign Alex Debrinkett to a seven-year uh 13 year 13 million per year extension.
- 37:32SPEAKER_08: Thank goodness.
- 37:33SPEAKER_05: They're a collective big huge try.
- 37:36SPEAKER_05: And Simon Edvinson is back in the United States training, which means that something's happening there.
- 37:40SPEAKER_05: You know, they've lost two games in overtime, the last two games, so they're getting points.
- 37:46SPEAKER_05: Um Albert Finney, right now, that kid is a player.
- 37:50SPEAKER_05: Seventh round pick, Albert, or not Albert Finney.
- 37:53SPEAKER_05: Albert Finney was an actor.
- 37:55SPEAKER_05: He was an actor.
- 37:57SPEAKER_08: I was like, Oh gosh, it's one of those days.
- 38:04SPEAKER_08: One of those days.
- 38:04SPEAKER_08: Let me ask you a question.
- 38:06SPEAKER_08: I this is an observation.
- 38:07SPEAKER_08: So I've been watching this stalemate with Connor Hellebeck.
- 38:12SPEAKER_08: And Grant, I don't know if you've been.
- 38:13SPEAKER_08: Emmett Finney, by the way.
- 38:14SPEAKER_08: Sorry, sorry, Emmett.
- 38:17SPEAKER_08: We we we have a goalie in Winnipeg, and there are sites out there that are literally tracking the amount of money this guy loses on a daily basis.
- 38:27SPEAKER_08: He is a USA athlete, he happens to play for the Winnipeg Jets.
- 38:31SPEAKER_08: Yep, and uh uh here you are telling great things about Detroit, and my understanding is he Connor Helleback does not want to go back to a Canadian team, he wants to go to an American team.
- 38:45SPEAKER_08: Yeah, so can we just call it a day and do a Larkin for Hellebuck?
- 38:49SPEAKER_08: Larkin's not going to Canada.
- 38:52SPEAKER_05: Larkin's never going to Canada.
- 38:54SPEAKER_08: No, Larkin going to Detroit.
- 38:55SPEAKER_08: Larkin's in Detroit.
- 38:58SPEAKER_08: I'm sorry, Larkin go into Winnipeg.
- 39:00SPEAKER_08: Never, never.
- 39:01SPEAKER_05: No, no, no.
- 39:01SPEAKER_05: He's he he's our Montreal's already put a package on the table, and he's like, guys, I'm not coming to Canada.
- 39:07unknown: Oh, rats.
- 39:07SPEAKER_05: I mean, there's a question.
- 39:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, go ahead.
- 39:10SPEAKER_03: I understand, like, in my opinion, Canada, and if there's Canadians listening, they might disagree with this.
- 39:17SPEAKER_03: It's very similar to the United States.
- 39:19SPEAKER_03: Like, it's not like these guys are getting shipped off to Europe, you know, and and I would understand, I actually understand like hella but like Winnipeg and Ottawa are not fun cities to be in.
- 39:30SPEAKER_03: I can't say they're far away.
- 39:31SPEAKER_05: Full full full uh full disclosure.
- 39:33SPEAKER_05: That's Grant Salzman saying this, our friends in Canada.
- 39:37SPEAKER_03: I'm just I'm just saying, and there's city, but there's cities like that in the United States too.
- 39:41SPEAKER_03: People don't really want to go play in, especially in the MLB, they don't want to go play in Detroit.
- 39:45SPEAKER_05: So it's it's it's one thing, dude.
- 39:47SPEAKER_05: It's one thing.
- 39:47SPEAKER_05: Watch your mouth.
- 39:49SPEAKER_05: What people they do want to come play in Detroit.
- 39:51SPEAKER_05: It's a great time.
- 39:52SPEAKER_03: Maybe hockey players, but baseball players don't.
- 39:54SPEAKER_05: Sure, they don't so so wait a minute.
- 39:56SPEAKER_05: It's it's it's one thing, it's one thing, taxes, right?
- 40:01SPEAKER_03: That's what I'm asking.
- 40:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's taxes.
- 40:03SPEAKER_03: But let me finish real quick around.
- 40:05SPEAKER_03: But I feel like you don't see this as often if players are going to say Toronto or Montreal, which are both very close to the United States.
- 40:15SPEAKER_05: Larkin turned out Larkin turned out a trade to Montreal.
- 40:18SPEAKER_05: That's fair.
- 40:19SPEAKER_03: But I feel like those cities, it's Leicester.
- 40:21SPEAKER_03: Well, Vancouver.
- 40:22SPEAKER_03: Vancouver's another one.
- 40:23SPEAKER_08: But back to your taxes piece, isn't this just a math problem?
- 40:27SPEAKER_08: Can't we just give Dylan Larkin uh one point times 1.3 of what the American salary is, uh, offset the Canadian taxes and call it a he doesn't want to go to Winnipeg because he doesn't think Winnipeg's gonna win a standard.
- 40:43SPEAKER_08: Okay, so it's not about taxes.
- 40:44SPEAKER_05: Well, part of it is taxes for sure, because you've got Brady Kachuk leaving Ottawa before his contract's up.
- 40:50SPEAKER_05: Um there's a good, there's a better than better than good chance that Austin Matthews is Cyanara and he's leaving.
- 40:58SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 40:58SPEAKER_08: Um but but but okay, so let me play hypothetical with you.
- 41:02SPEAKER_08: Uh let's say, let's say that you were going to uh go into the NHL draft and you had the chance right now to go play for the Montreal Canadians.
- 41:15SPEAKER_05: Different part of your career.
- 41:16SPEAKER_05: Drafting when you're getting drafted, unless I mean okay, so so let's say you're not getting drafted.
- 41:22SPEAKER_08: Let's say you're uh an impending free agent and you look at a team like Montreal who has built really smart oh my gosh, they look like geniuses.
- 41:33SPEAKER_08: They signed everybody before the salary cap blew up uh to long-term deals, and they have a uh uh a robust pipeline.
- 41:44SPEAKER_08: Uh so if it's not about taxes, don't you as a player look at a team like Montreal and go, wow, they've really got a chance to win and win for a long time.
- 41:53SPEAKER_05: It's it's quality of life, too.
- 41:54SPEAKER_05: And Montreal's a wonderful city.
- 41:56SPEAKER_05: Some people don't want to live in eight months of winter.
- 42:01SPEAKER_08: If you're making a boatload of money, don't you go somewhere in the other four months?
- 42:05SPEAKER_05: But you see, we're we're looking at this from the perspective of three guys who are never gonna sniff this.
- 42:11SPEAKER_05: Dylan Larkin is a top 15.
- 42:13SPEAKER_05: Dylan Larkin's a top 15 center in the league, and there's that right now with the injuries out there between you know Barkov and Stahl, okay.
- 42:22SPEAKER_08: But they're they're gonna find a way to make it happen.
- 42:24SPEAKER_08: Okay, but but but then let's look at the teams that he said he wants to get traded to.
- 42:28SPEAKER_08: Yeah, Minnesota.
- 42:30SPEAKER_08: Yep, it's it's correct me if I'm wrong, it's pretty cold in Minnesota a lot of the year.
- 42:36SPEAKER_05: Sure.
- 42:36SPEAKER_08: Florida, not cold.
- 42:38SPEAKER_08: It's really nice, yeah.
- 42:40SPEAKER_08: Nice and the elbow room, yeah.
- 42:43SPEAKER_08: Uh down playing for the Panthers.
- 42:45SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 42:45SPEAKER_05: Who was his third team?
- 42:47SPEAKER_08: Vegas.
- 42:47SPEAKER_08: Oh, yeah.
- 42:48SPEAKER_05: Well, look at who's on all three of those teams.
- 42:51SPEAKER_05: His best friend is on Minnesota and Quinn Hughes.
- 42:54SPEAKER_05: Okay, his other two best friends and the Kachuk brothers are in Florida, and his other best friend, Jack Eichels, in in Vegas.
- 43:01SPEAKER_08: So they you just nailed it right there.
- 43:02SPEAKER_08: So it's the teams for him to move, it's about personal relationships.
- 43:07SPEAKER_05: But they're also all about they're all cup contenders, too.
- 43:10SPEAKER_08: Personal relationships and cup contenders, it's not about weather.
- 43:15SPEAKER_05: I I think that there's probably I think all of it mixes in there too to some degree, and not necessarily about taxes, but at the top is he wants to play with his buds.
- 43:23SPEAKER_05: Well, and he also said he would go to Dallas, also a cup contender.
- 43:26SPEAKER_05: Uh-huh.
- 43:26SPEAKER_08: And he also said he would personally hear you say I know.
- 43:29SPEAKER_05: And it he also, I think he would go to I don't know.
- 43:31SPEAKER_08: Don't even say the Blackhawks.
- 43:33SPEAKER_05: No, no, no, no.
- 43:34SPEAKER_05: And probably not there.
- 43:35SPEAKER_05: Probably not there.
- 43:36SPEAKER_05: Um, they're not, they're not at their windows, not open.
- 43:39SPEAKER_05: Um, but I I look at a team like Montreal.
- 43:42SPEAKER_05: I would, even though I grew up not liking that team at all, any original six team I'm going to.
- 43:48SPEAKER_05: Like full stop.
- 43:50SPEAKER_05: Um, any second six team I'm going to, if there's a last six team, I'll go to that team too.
- 43:57SPEAKER_05: Um, I'd go play for the Cleveland Bears.
- 44:00SPEAKER_05: That don't even exist anymore right now.
- 44:01SPEAKER_08: So, what else did you see on the slate last night?
- 44:04SPEAKER_05: Um, I mean, right off the bat, the Oilers just keep rolling.
- 44:08SPEAKER_05: Score, I mean, just I mean uh Connor McDavid, uh Sean on on uh we were in the car earlier today.
- 44:14SPEAKER_05: He's like uh uh dad, Connor McDavid's on pace for 224 points this year.
- 44:19SPEAKER_05: Uh seven are we frozen?
- 44:24SPEAKER_05: That's not good.
- 44:30SPEAKER_08: All right, so what else did you see on last night's like?
- 44:33SPEAKER_05: Um apparently Edmonton's never gonna lose again, even though they don't have goaltending.
- 44:37SPEAKER_05: Um and Connor McDavid's on pace for, according to my son, uh 224 points this season.
- 44:43SPEAKER_05: I mean, I don't know if he can sustain it.
- 44:45SPEAKER_05: I think he has 17 points in like five games.
- 44:48SPEAKER_05: Uh or no, six games.
- 44:50SPEAKER_05: 17 points in six games.
- 44:51SPEAKER_05: So he's just under three points a game.
- 44:53SPEAKER_05: Um feels like that's not sustainable, but who knows?
- 44:58SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, right now I think he's on pace if uh if my math is is correct.
- 45:04SPEAKER_05: That's like uh roughly almost uh well 240, 240 total points.
- 45:10SPEAKER_08: And and and correct me if I'm wrong, is Hyman Hurt?
- 45:13SPEAKER_08: He's not even with the team.
- 45:15SPEAKER_08: Yeah, they're missing some some guys that are usually regular controls.
- 45:20SPEAKER_05: Hyman's not playing.
- 45:21SPEAKER_05: It looks like um, you know, Bouchard is just on another planet right now.
- 45:25SPEAKER_05: Oh my gosh, it's amazing.
- 45:27SPEAKER_08: Yeah, this guy was like leading the NHL as a defenseman a day or two.
- 45:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean seven assists, and yeah, yeah, it's just crazy.
- 45:36SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, the question is though, and again, you and I have talked about this, so this is nothing new.
- 45:40SPEAKER_05: Is it sustainable with the coach that they have?
- 45:43SPEAKER_05: I I don't know.
- 45:44SPEAKER_05: Um, what talked to me in in the dog days of I was gonna say, yeah, let's let's talk about it in December.
- 45:49SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 45:49SPEAKER_08: And then uh seasons a little bit further along.
- 45:51SPEAKER_05: You know, uh Avalanche Stars had their first uh first tilt, 3-2 game, you know, pretty even up and down the lineup.
- 45:58SPEAKER_05: Ar Trey Lekinen got it got us has his fourth.
- 46:01SPEAKER_08: You know who's sneaky to me this this season is Utah.
- 46:08SPEAKER_08: Have you been following Utah?
- 46:10SPEAKER_08: I mean, they just I like that team, they just keep winning games, and it seems like it's by committee.
- 46:17SPEAKER_08: There's nobody that's really kind of jumped out, and uh it just seems like it's kind of a collective effort.
- 46:25SPEAKER_05: Another team that if they can get their hands on on the center, um, you know, they're in the toughest division in hockey.
- 46:31SPEAKER_05: Well, between the central and the Atlantic, you know, there's a good chance that there's gonna be five playoff teams from the central.
- 46:38SPEAKER_05: If you look at, okay, you've got Minnesota, Colorado, and Dallas, they're kind of like in, but then Utah's right there.
- 46:47SPEAKER_05: And then you've got Nashville and Winnipeg, and even the Blues who are gonna make, you know, they they always make these little mini season runs that get things going.
- 46:56SPEAKER_08: They give us hope.
- 46:57SPEAKER_08: They do.
- 46:57SPEAKER_05: And um, you know, don't say then Connor Bedard debuted last night, got an assist, team won a game against the Penguins.
- 47:06SPEAKER_05: So just a fun night.
- 47:07SPEAKER_05: And and and again, as coaches of youth hockey, what do we always say?
- 47:11SPEAKER_05: Kids, watch a game.
- 47:13SPEAKER_05: And if you can't watch a game, watch a period, watch a period, and pick a player or two and say, that's what I want to focus on the good, the bad, the ugly.
- 47:22SPEAKER_05: Um, but we're gonna get more of these games.
- 47:25SPEAKER_05: I mean, the NHL has just done so much in the like I would say the last five years of marketing themselves and putting a product on the ice and getting personalities out there.
- 47:34SPEAKER_05: And as a coach, you just hope the kids are there watching these games and soaking it up.
- 47:40SPEAKER_05: I remember growing up where you would watch your local team, and then like when you had cable, you would sometimes get a Chicago game on WGN, or you'd sometimes get a Rangers game on WOR.
- 47:51SPEAKER_05: And I loved Mary Lemieux, and so I was always trying to see when the Penguins played the Rangers on WOR.
- 47:56SPEAKER_05: I was like looking at in the newspaper because that's what we did.
- 48:00SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah.
- 48:00SPEAKER_05: Um, and so I just think back how how dirty fingers and all.
- 48:07SPEAKER_05: Black and white and run all over.
- 48:10SPEAKER_05: But I just think back how cool it would have been had we had this access to NHL games when we were kids.
- 48:16SPEAKER_08: All right, let's get Grant in here because I want to uh have a discussion about a topic that he is much closer to than us.
- 48:23SPEAKER_08: So I just happened to notice this the other day, Grant, and the reason that I noticed it is I uh recently purchased tickets to the Mizzou, Texas game.
- 48:34SPEAKER_08: And uh we are going as a family, and uh I'm trying to make it to that game.
- 48:39SPEAKER_08: What's that?
- 48:40SPEAKER_03: I'm hoping to make it to that game.
- 48:42SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 48:43SPEAKER_03: Hoping.
- 48:43SPEAKER_03: I'm hoping.
- 48:44SPEAKER_08: Well, what I happen to notice is uh uh don't hit me when I say this, Coach.
- 48:49SPEAKER_08: Uh, but Grant, correct me if I'm wrong.
- 48:52SPEAKER_08: I think Mizzou is ranked maybe one notch ahead of the Tennessee Volunteers.
- 49:00SPEAKER_08: And so uh do I have that right?
- 49:03SPEAKER_08: Uh is Coach Jared a Valls fan?
- 49:06SPEAKER_05: My son, my son is a freshman at the University of Tennessee.
- 49:10SPEAKER_03: So they're the worst team in the top 25.
- 49:13SPEAKER_03: They are okay.
- 49:15SPEAKER_03: Awful.
- 49:18SPEAKER_03: They almost lost to the city.
- 49:20SPEAKER_08: Breathe, breathe.
- 49:22SPEAKER_03: They almost lost to Arkansas.
- 49:24SPEAKER_03: No, they put Arkansas away.
- 49:26SPEAKER_03: They won by 14 with the touchdown at the very end of the game.
- 49:29SPEAKER_03: Hey, that's all that matters, man.
- 49:31SPEAKER_03: They covered.
- 49:32SPEAKER_03: No, they did not.
- 49:33SPEAKER_03: What was the what was the spread?
- 49:35SPEAKER_03: 14 and a half.
- 49:36SPEAKER_03: Oh, of course.
- 49:37SPEAKER_05: 14 and a hook.
- 49:38SPEAKER_05: Well, they were on the road.
- 49:40SPEAKER_05: I don't care.
- 49:41SPEAKER_05: Well, hey, I all I know is Mississippi State, who just got trucked, absolutely destroyed by yeah, they just got destroyed.
- 49:51SPEAKER_03: So well, the SEC doesn't make sense because Mizzou destroyed AM.
- 49:54SPEAKER_03: No football makes any no football makes any sense right now.
- 49:57SPEAKER_03: So, Coach Drew, you're saying that Mizzou's one ahead of the Tennessee Volunteers.
- 50:02SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah.
- 50:03SPEAKER_08: I I just found it interesting because I don't remember Mizzou uh being ranked um uh high, I'd say over that high, I'd say over the last I think 2023, maybe two years.
- 50:17SPEAKER_08: Yeah, 2023.
- 50:19SPEAKER_08: 2023.
- 50:20SPEAKER_03: And I was just 2024, they were ranked number sixth in the country in 2024 at one point.
- 50:25SPEAKER_08: Well, and I'll uh I'll share some personal uh information.
- 50:29SPEAKER_08: Uh my dad and my stepmom both went to UT.
- 50:32SPEAKER_08: UTK.
- 50:33SPEAKER_08: UTK.
- 50:34SPEAKER_08: And yeah, UTK.
- 50:36SPEAKER_08: University of Tennessee.
- 50:37SPEAKER_08: UT, thank you.
- 50:38SPEAKER_03: Yes, and and so now Tennessee.
- 50:43SPEAKER_03: Tennessee is UTK.
- 50:44SPEAKER_03: Tennessee UTK copy.
- 50:46SPEAKER_08: Yeah, and so and so now Jared's son uh goes to Tennessee.
- 50:50SPEAKER_08: And so I just I don't know.
- 50:52SPEAKER_08: I was looking at the standings and I'm just like, how in the world?
- 50:56SPEAKER_08: Because when I think about SEC football and like the you know, the big programs, I think about Tennessee, I think about Alabama, I think about Georgia, uh, and then I even think of the ACC, Florida, Florida State, and you know, that's just kind of big boy football.
- 51:11SPEAKER_08: And I was a little surprised to see Missouri ranked that high.
- 51:14SPEAKER_08: Um, why are they ranked that high?
- 51:16SPEAKER_08: And why do they get a little bit of uh uh uh an extra point in the rankings versus a program like Tennessee?
- 51:25SPEAKER_03: Well, I actually, yeah, to that point, I think since Missouri's entered the SEC, this is their 13th season.
- 51:32SPEAKER_03: I think you would probably Missouri's been better more than Tennessee has been.
- 51:37SPEAKER_03: Like if you put the two programs together, Missouri's had more had better years in 13 than Tennessee.
- 51:44SPEAKER_03: They played in two SEC championship games, they won a Cotton Bowl.
- 51:48SPEAKER_03: Um, two Cotton Bowls, actually, since they entered the SEC.
- 51:52SPEAKER_03: Um, it's it's the quarterback.
- 51:55SPEAKER_03: I mean, Mizzou has right now, people are mocking the first quarterback taken off the board in April in Austin Simmons.
- 52:02SPEAKER_03: So uh you have a first-round quarterback, and Tennessee has two quarterbacks.
- 52:07SPEAKER_03: And I don't know if you know what they say about when you have two quarterbacks, you have zero zero quarterbacks.
- 52:12SPEAKER_03: So I honestly that's the difference in these teams right now.
- 52:15SPEAKER_03: And unfortunately, though, I think they both might lose this Saturday.
- 52:20SPEAKER_05: Well, you're gonna have an angry Texas team, that's for sure.
- 52:24SPEAKER_05: Um, and I don't know, you it's something about when Alabama Missouri plays Old Miss this week.
- 52:29SPEAKER_05: That's right, that's right.
- 52:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah, they've got Old Miss Old Miss, um, who's another team that nobody can figure out, uh, as well as LSU.
- 52:37SPEAKER_05: So I think that uh Alabama is is gonna be a tough, tough out, but it is a home game for the Vols.
- 52:45SPEAKER_05: Um, and it is the Vols, you know, their main one of their main rivals.
- 52:49SPEAKER_05: They always have a little trouble going into Nealan.
- 52:52SPEAKER_05: Um, I would say that uh so so the edge just so for for for um You knew he was gonna look at stats.
- 53:01SPEAKER_05: Tennessee has had two more winning seasons over that period of time, nine to your seven.
- 53:06SPEAKER_05: So if W's are what if W's are what count Who has more wins though in that time?
- 53:13SPEAKER_05: Uh you have four more wins.
- 53:15SPEAKER_05: You're 99 and 66, and Tennessee is 95 and 68.
- 53:19SPEAKER_03: So if W's are what count, well, yeah, successful.
- 53:25SPEAKER_05: Let's just say they're they're both um.
- 53:27SPEAKER_05: I would say that Missouri and Tennessee 600 teams.
- 53:31SPEAKER_05: They're both 600 teams, um, which is tough to be.
- 53:35SPEAKER_03: Yes, and Missouri's peak, though, I think has been better than Tennessee's.
- 53:39SPEAKER_03: I I agree with that.
- 53:40SPEAKER_03: But I would say right now, yeah.
- 53:44SPEAKER_03: Tennessee hasn't touched that since Peyton Manning was playing.
- 53:47SPEAKER_05: No, no argument here.
- 53:49SPEAKER_03: I'm joking.
- 53:49SPEAKER_03: They made a college football playoff, Tennessee.
- 53:51SPEAKER_05: Hey man, it's true.
- 53:52SPEAKER_05: They did make two, was it two years ago?
- 53:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but to be fair, yeah.
- 53:56SPEAKER_05: So I mean, college football playoff right now kind of like Trump's a cotton bowl win.
- 53:59SPEAKER_03: Who cares about a cotton bowl?
- 54:01SPEAKER_03: But if Missouri's buttons.
- 54:03SPEAKER_03: If Missouri's was if Missouri's the 12 team playoff was a year before.
- 54:07SPEAKER_03: If some butts and candy and nuts.
- 54:09SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry, pal.
- 54:11SPEAKER_03: Like would you rather win the cotton bowl or lose in the first round?
- 54:14SPEAKER_03: I will say Tennessee's defense.
- 54:16SPEAKER_05: Tennessee's defense right now is probably a little bit ahead of Missouri's.
- 54:19SPEAKER_05: Probably.
- 54:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 54:20SPEAKER_08: So all right, we digress.
- 54:22SPEAKER_08: We we have to take the football there for a second.
- 54:24SPEAKER_08: Yeah, we gotta take a break and pay a couple bills.
- 54:26SPEAKER_08: We'll be right back.
- 54:27SPEAKER_08: Too many men on mic.
- 54:30SPEAKER_08: So, Grant, uh, the box uh is gonna get a little bit more crowded uh in the near future.
- 54:36SPEAKER_08: You normally just get to talk to us, but uh I'm excited to roll two new guests, uh, a regular segment into Future Too Many Men on the Mic podcast.
- 54:51SPEAKER_08: I know you are too.
- 54:52SPEAKER_05: I mean, if we have Grant, we could have our own quad box potentially.
- 54:56SPEAKER_05: So um, for listeners of the show from last year, you'll remember that as we were going into the mid-states and the mid-states playoffs, we were having players come on and uh we had chirps, we had uh, you know, breaking down games, we had people calling their shots, and two of our, I would say, more uh uh personable players that we had on were Blake Warren from Rockwood Summit and Ethan Feinstein from Clayton.
- 55:22SPEAKER_05: And this year, we haven't figured out the name yet.
- 55:24SPEAKER_05: I think you wanted to call them too many benders on the mic.
- 55:27SPEAKER_05: I want to call them Benders, but uh, we are gonna allow them to name themselves.
- 55:30SPEAKER_05: But it's gonna be too many players or too many vendors or too many high school players on the mic, and they're gonna be part of our roving correspondence, our roving core on assignment, but we're actually gonna have them on the show.
- 55:42SPEAKER_05: And you know, everything from breaking down games, talking to players, talking to coaches, and even being at some of the hockey night in St.
- 55:49SPEAKER_05: Louis games, it's gonna be a blast.
- 55:50SPEAKER_08: And even some banner with Graham.
- 55:52SPEAKER_05: Probably some banner with Grant.
- 55:54SPEAKER_05: I I I would not get into a uh you know, I don't know what they call it, but I would not get into a back and forth with Blake Warren.
- 55:59SPEAKER_05: But Blake.
- 56:01SPEAKER_05: Blake Warren uh will carve you up verbally, um, and you'll be asking for another.
- 56:09SPEAKER_05: But uh, we're super, super excited.
- 56:11SPEAKER_05: And next week we're gonna have our preview show.
- 56:14SPEAKER_05: Uh, this year we've got 12 weeks, 25 games every Friday or Saturday night at a different rink.
- 56:22SPEAKER_05: We're gonna be featuring at least two games every week, and uh it's gonna be a blast.
- 56:27SPEAKER_05: It's gonna be a blast.
- 56:28SPEAKER_08: It is, and uh uh I love how we're growing it because last year we couldn't get everybody in the mix.
- 56:34SPEAKER_08: This year, this season, we're gonna have to be able to get everybody in the mix and have representation.
- 56:40SPEAKER_08: And I just love it.
- 56:41SPEAKER_08: The Linwood announcers again, University.
- 56:44SPEAKER_08: Well, not University of Linewood, Linewood University, uh announcers who do the play-by-play uh for the university hockey program.
- 56:51SPEAKER_08: We'll be doing the broadcast again.
- 56:53SPEAKER_08: We've got some fantastic sponsors.
- 56:56SPEAKER_08: Uh, we have uh uh some great deals too that are included, like uh meals of the week and things that uh hockey players might be interested in for recovery and uh good nutrition.
- 57:09SPEAKER_08: And uh it's exciting and it's right around the corner.
- 57:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah, huge thank you to Revel Kitchen, uh, to Franklita Automotive Group, to Brad Bush State Farm Agency, uh to Dave, Dr.
- 57:20SPEAKER_05: Dave King Motion Orthopedics, and then finally the folks that are helping to provide our audio equipment, music go around St.
- 57:26SPEAKER_05: Louis, and we're excited to be partnering with them.
- 57:28SPEAKER_05: There's still room on the bus, still room on the bus.
- 57:30SPEAKER_05: I think uh I think we've got a few more uh you know, uh irons in the fire, coals in the fire.
- 57:36SPEAKER_05: Um, but maybe maybe it's just me.
- 57:38SPEAKER_05: Maybe I want to like tease the intro.
- 57:41SPEAKER_05: I mean, we could tease the intro if we'll put it up.
- 57:44SPEAKER_05: Let's put the intro up because uh yeah, this is hockey night in St.
- 57:47SPEAKER_05: Louis.
- 57:47SPEAKER_08: How many times do you watch this a day?
- 57:49SPEAKER_05: You know, it's I'm not gonna lie.
- 57:51SPEAKER_05: I I like watching it, it's fun, it's it's a blast.
- 57:55SPEAKER_05: Um, but let's put it up here.
- 57:57SPEAKER_08: Um, let me see if I can uh I I want to see I want to hear how pumped Grant is after he watches this intro.
- 58:04SPEAKER_05: Grant, have you seen the intro yet?
- 58:05SPEAKER_05: I don't think Grant's seen the introduction.
- 58:06SPEAKER_05: I don't think he has I don't think he has either.
- 58:08SPEAKER_05: Let's let's share screen.
- 58:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and let's pull up window here.
- 58:11SPEAKER_05: We're gonna go and let's this will be a quick uh he might skate a little faster on the ice after he watches this intro.
- 58:18SPEAKER_05: Well, we gotta talk about getting him back out uh out to uh out to the let's add to the stage.
- 58:25SPEAKER_05: Let's go there we go, and uh let's let's play a little, let's see if we can play a little uh and I like the uh mic presentation.
- 59:45SPEAKER_08: I mean Do you ever notice how uh when I listen to that, the the the the lick at the beginning, it it it's reminiscent of Sissy Strat.
- 59:55SPEAKER_08: Ooh, that's good.
- 59:59SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_05: It's close.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_05: For sure.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_05: Well, I'm I I mean, this is gonna be fun on so many different levels.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_05: We're gonna be watching hockey, we're gonna be coaching hockey, we get to do cool stuff with media, we're working with Justin Dibble at Dibble Films.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_05: Um, excited to take our our our uh our our show up a notch, but most importantly, like we talked about it last year.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_05: This is kind of the culmination, there's word, of our vision and and and of getting these youth hockey players, these high school hockey players, the exposure that the baseball players, the football players, the soccer players get, and now having our own night every week, um, hopefully making it destination viewing.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_05: Let's go.
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_08: Well, and we're just gonna sit in the background and uh let Ethan and Blake take it away, take the reins and unleash them on Grant.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_08: Grant, how do you feel about the Grant?
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_04: What'd you feel?
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_04: Uh what'd you think about the uh yeah?
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_03: I liked it.
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_03: I watched it when we posted on social media.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_03: I think uh that's a good hype video to get you rolling ready for to watch the mid-states.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_08: Are you ready for uh uh two these two fine young men?
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_08: Uh you've got to remember that.
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_03: You know, you uh they don't want to mess with me.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_03: I'll just leave it out.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_03: I don't need any they all the chirps are fine.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_03: So Grant's gonna be acting like the older brother, but they don't want it back.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_03: Oh, there we go.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_03: You know, like the older brother, he you know, I'm an older brother.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_03: I'm the oldest, you know.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_03: The the younger, they they dish it a little bit, but then eventually they cross a line.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_03: What do you think the older brother has to intervene?
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_08: What do you what do you think the over-under on the first segment shot is?
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_05: Probably 10 minutes, if that.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_08: Oh, I was gonna say like 10 seconds.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah, 10 seconds.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_05: Well, especially with Blake Warren, he'll be like, Segment, are they even in St.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_05: Louis County?
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_03: City more ice.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_05: They're both, they're both, they're both uh younger brothers too.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_05: Ethan and Blake are both younger brothers.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_05: I can tell.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_05: Well, we're excited, and again, we don't want to bury the lead too much, but next week we'll have our preview show.
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_05: We'll go down our list.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_05: As you saw, we've got a great first slate Halloween night, after Ice Arena.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_05: Um, maybe we can get them to to put on some breakfast sandwiches at night.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_05: Nothing like breakfast at night.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_05: Um, but uh we've got CBC uh taking on Shamanade and Webster Groves taking on Parkway West.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_05: I mean, all four of those are what you would call like traditional, like established hockey programs in the high school sports.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_05: It's gonna be a great start.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_08: What a great way to start off the season.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_08: I mean, that's a uh uh that's a great first uh tussle uh there in the early game.
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_05: So, you know, these high school teams are all hoping to get off to fast starts, you know, one and oh, make that two and oh, hopefully make that three and oh.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_05: Um mentioned this a little earlier.
- 1:03:01SPEAKER_05: Our our friends in uh in it's not the city of brotherly love right now.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_05: No, it's brutal and oh five and two after losing to Carolina, and then they just lost last night.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_08: So let me just say a couple things about Philadelphia real quick.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_08: Uh oh six and two, not that I'm counting.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_08: I remember uh many, many years ago when JD Drew in baseball was supposed to go, I think, to the Phillies, or maybe he went to the Phillies for a minute, and he wound up being with the Cardinals.
- 1:03:33SPEAKER_08: Yeah, and I can remember good ball player, great ball player, yeah, but Philly fans and the bleachers would bring D batteries and throw them at JD Drew in the outfield.
- 1:03:47SPEAKER_08: And I'm only gonna connect that to Rick Tocket.
- 1:03:51SPEAKER_08: Oh, is a flyer.
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_08: So the other night they were chanting for him to get fired.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_08: Fire Tocket.
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_08: How many games are we into the season?
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_08: Like less than 10.
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_08: It's a single digit, right?
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_05: They're eight games, they're they're oh six and two.
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_05: This is a playoff team last year.
- 1:04:07SPEAKER_08: So uh some things don't change.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_08: I and I I get that you're competitive, but man, this is a guy that played for you for years, and Rick Tocket was a bad man when he was playing hockey, not only a bad man, but he scored a ton of goals.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_08: Not only could he put the puck in the net, but he could also fight for you and was a hard-nosed guy.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_08: And so I will say, as a hockey fan, it's kind of tough to see the Philadelphia Faithful uh chanting for him to get fired, a guy that uh has done a lot for that.
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_05: So let's talk about this.
- 1:04:39SPEAKER_05: You know, a couple years ago, New Jersey was going through an issue where you know it was Fire Lindy, fire Lindy rough, remember?
- 1:04:45SPEAKER_05: And then they turned it around and ended up being, I think they were the number one seed by the end of the year.
- 1:04:50SPEAKER_05: They had a great team play coming off a playoff year, Jack Hughes.
- 1:04:53SPEAKER_08: It was a hockey stick recovery.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_05: It was up and to the right.
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_05: Um, like a little business there, a little business there.
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_05: I think Philly's gonna be fine.
- 1:05:02SPEAKER_05: So, so hear me out.
- 1:05:04SPEAKER_05: They've got some injuries injuries, Connect's hurt.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_05: Um, Porter Martone is going through that scuffle with being a sophomore.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_05: Uh, I think their goaltending is is is not where it's gonna be at uh come December.
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_05: But it brings to mind like youth hockey, but let's be honest, there are there are teams that struggle through through the season.
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_05: Um, and you know, one of the things as a coach, it's how do you keep kids engaged?
- 1:05:31SPEAKER_05: Because kids take it a lot harder, especially as you get older.
- 1:05:34SPEAKER_05: And if you're in high school, for instance, how do you keep them engaged?
- 1:05:37SPEAKER_05: Um, how do you keep parents still positive about things?
- 1:05:41SPEAKER_05: And you know, we're talking about six, I mean professional athletes, you know, I don't agree with this, but people will say we buy our tickets so we have a right to boo.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_05: I don't I don't agree with that, but we definitely see that pressure, different pressure on kids and on coaches in youth hockey when you have these rough starts.
- 1:05:59SPEAKER_05: I think I of our our season at Ledue last year on the JB team, struggled, you know, playing above our heads, you know, for more for a lot of the year.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_05: My older son was on a team that did not make the Central States playoffs and then ended up uh going to nationals because they won that tournament.
- 1:06:18SPEAKER_05: And so things can change.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_05: But the question I would ask for you is if you're one of these families, how do you judge like you know is this the right spot for us?
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_05: Is this a culture issue?
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_05: Is this a talent issue?
- 1:06:32SPEAKER_05: Is it a coaching issue?
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I mean my first uh thought around this is uh don't panic um it's another song that's a that's that's a that's a great cold play song very cold play song so uh but I would follow that right up with frame it and that is I feel like the key way to describe it frame your season okay we're not playing a 10 game season we're playing a season that ends in for many of these youth hockey organizations around the middle of February maybe early February time frame so combine don't panic with framing of the time frame and say look right now things aren't clicking for whatever reason uh and that's okay because we have a season that's this long and uh we're gonna continue to develop the kids and as long as we continue doing that then uh we expect things will uh go our way more often than not and so uh and I have been a part of uh teams where uh maybe the season didn't start the way that the parents wanted to and I would get text messages from parents and they would panic and they would say oh my gosh my kid doesn't want to come to the rink or is apprehensive about coming to the rink uh because we're not getting wins or losses.
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_08: So uh I'll use our great friends from Finland and Sweden as the model.
- 1:08:05SPEAKER_08: You are not developing as a youth hockey player until you are 23 years old.
- 1:08:10SPEAKER_08: I think I've repeated myself in many conversations about that.
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_08: Now let's take it inside of a season you're not done developing as a youth hockey player in your season until the beginning or the middle of February until the end of your season.
- 1:08:24SPEAKER_08: So what I would say is pause, take a deep breath, have faith in your coaches that have a plan but then you know you as a coach have to give these kids a plan on the ice don't you think it's uh whether you're a volunteer a paid coach whether you're a a PWC or a 16U triple A coach nobody likes losing no you know it's a competitive sport and winning is part of development.
- 1:08:53SPEAKER_05: It is and and what I would say is you know you have to take a step back and take a look at the whole picture are these games is is the effort in the game is the is it a is it a skill deficiency is it a will deficiency is it a structured deficiency you know I think a lot of times you know um I think some of the best coaches are the ones who have this ability to be flexible and say well this is this is what the team is so let's play to this team strength let's put the kids in the best scenario to be um as successful as possible and I I don't you I don't want to say win the practice because that's not the point but you want to have like fun practices and you want to create an environment where you know as a coach point out in spite of a loss or in spite of you know this performance uh on the scoreboard let's see where you were last week versus this week let's see where you where you were two weeks ago versus this week and where are we gonna be um I think you and I have both been a part of teams uh coaching them where you know you you have a rough start to the year you have a rough patch in the season um but you use that as an opportunity to just basically hey relax let's play hockey and then all of a sudden you go on a run.
- 1:10:13SPEAKER_08: Yeah and some of it I think can be just uh time of year you know we're coming off of the summer uh maybe we're playing other sports maybe we're shutting it down and uh uh and we're not playing hockey for a bit and so now we're starting into the season and we're getting our legs going.
- 1:10:32SPEAKER_08: And so one of the things that I that I've seen that I think is kind of common is we've got to kind of retrain our brain.
- 1:10:39SPEAKER_08: But I would say retrain our brain on effort for example let's say you're a really fast player one of the faster players that are on the team and let's say you happen to play the forward position uh we might just skate one way when we get back and we start playing hockey again because we like scoring goals and we're out on the ice and doing that kind of stuff and so we kind of forget that we have a responsibility also to backcheck.
- 1:11:05SPEAKER_08: And so if we're really fast on the ice uh create ways to make it competitive and reward the players like you did a great job scoring that goal let's see how many defensive takeaways you can get in the game uh I think you can get five how many do you think you can get and get the player involved and help them kind of set the goal on well I think I could get three this this game well fantastic let's make that a goal and let's work towards that and get them to buy in a little bit but at the beginning of the season sometimes it's hard to knock the rest off and some of that is just I feel like uh just what I've seen are around effort at the beginning of the season.
- 1:11:45SPEAKER_05: Yeah I think you you touch on something with um things to celebrate beyond a goal or an assist.
- 1:11:54SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 1:11:54SPEAKER_05: And you know there's a lot of different uh opinions about the role of analytics in hockey it feels like with all sports you know whether you're in baseball talking about war um whether you're in football talking about you know you know point height out of out of football and where your release vector is in hockey we talk about everything from expected goals we talk about um you know we're analyzing everything from zone entry speed here you know your um your shots that I I heard this stat today um shots that have a better than 50% chance of creating a scoring opportunity it's like it's crazy wow but if you're a coach on the and what I love what you just said is like say you got a kid or a couple of kids who are kind of down maybe they've been held off the score sheet you know bob jackebeck told that story about how he had that player that hadn't scored all year finally did yeah but like what if you had a clicker and you're sitting there watching these players and every time there's a there's a there's a turnover that they caused click yeah every time that there's a there's a back check click or every time that they they win a face off these little things that then you can bring to them as a coach a tangible yeah I think it's redefining success and you decide as a coach how you want to redefine success.
- 1:13:15SPEAKER_08: It could be 50-50 board battles it could be uh you decide as a coach what you want that to be but you know the average person might look at it and say oh well it's goals and assists or it's you know how many goals we won by there's many other ways to measure success and when you're when your uh team is perhaps not performing the way that you'd like to go you got to be creative give your players uh and give the parents other ways to uh define success and so I feel like that's what we're talking about.
- 1:13:50SPEAKER_05: Well I think that there's a lot of cool opportunities there.
- 1:13:52SPEAKER_05: You know one of the things that we're doing is we leverage Drift um and leverage a lot of the tools that are in drift and and if you haven't taken a look at Drift the the go to drift uh drifthockey.com or download the app um it really takes a lot of those things that we talk about with Huddle and with other film study and then building out practice plans we're gonna go an extra step further this year as we start to bring some AI into it to help us analyze film and say this is what we want to take a look at.
- 1:14:21SPEAKER_05: And again it might be nerding out to the extreme as far as hockey is concerned but it's not hard to do.
- 1:14:26SPEAKER_05: And this this is where I think that technology can really create an awesome awesome opportunity to help create better coaching um better coaching opportunities for us as we look to to you know transition from successful or not successful games to make a successful practice so that we can continue this development.
- 1:14:44SPEAKER_05: So there's a lot of cool things out there.
- 1:14:47SPEAKER_05: Transitioning we had a girls coach on in Dale yeah and uh one of the things that I I was reading as we kind of try to keep up on current events and equate what's going on in the NHL and the larger world of hockey to youth hockey is you know the PWHL is exploding.
- 1:15:03SPEAKER_05: They've just added more teams one of which is in uh San Jose and um we've got Brooke Bryant uh she was a former uh youth player and and now she's a PWHL player who's talking about the role models and being a role model for local girls in the San Jose area and I noticed this the other night um that we have uh female refs and minority refs in the NHL what we aren't seeing yet is an influx of female and minority coaches in the NHL and you think about this is why this is so important where my mind goes here and and look we're a couple of of white guy hockey player hockey coaches Dale's the same we're doing our best to coach the girls that we've got but when you think about putting yourself in the shoes of a young girl or a minority athlete who maybe wants to try hockey we've got to get more folks that look like them in the sport.
- 1:16:00SPEAKER_08: Yeah and unfortunately we weren't able to uh uh get a uh who was our USA hockey rep that we wanted to get on the ice and I think we just Kristen Sager she's gonna get out there she's gonna get out of there we just had a logistical issue and it didn't work out but that was the reason that we wanted to do it is uh had these girls uh see an expert on the ice uh that looks like them uh uh that they can relate to and so I think it's super important with the growth of the PWHL uh by the way they're having the first their first all-star game uh I I heard a little bit ago so they they added two franchises this year fingers crossed four four franchises oh four franchises yeah fingers crossed uh um this is Homer reference number two St.
- 1:16:51SPEAKER_08: Louis is gonna get one I I hope we get one in St.
- 1:16:53SPEAKER_08: Louis that would be outstanding and so I think uh uh you and I uh coach uh a number of girls and I would welcome uh with open arms an opportunity to have a uh a a great female coach out on the ice uh and just provide that opportunity uh because as we've heard from Dale uh you know it's uh it's a different experience yep it's just a different experience and I'm not saying uh uh that other than it's just it just I I look at it as you know Lexi Levy friend of the show former uh former goalie at Ledue and played here in St.
- 1:17:32SPEAKER_05: Louis she's now coaching hockey at the collegiate level in in Pennsylvania yep um I look at you know we we talked earlier about you know um the girl on our team who you know uh I don't know necessarily want to embarrass her by naming um but we have a young girl she's a freshman she made varsity hockey at Ledue so cool how cool would it be to if she was open to it to have her go to youth hockey organizations at the co-ed level and start talking to the different girls and saying look you can come play varsity hockey you know what that's that's a great point I think that I think you really nailed it on the head there.
- 1:18:05SPEAKER_08: I think what we can do as a community and maybe even as a set of coaches is take some of these high school uh girl players and get them involved in some of the local youth hockey organizations and get them involved with some of the younger teams and what I mean is like uh maybe squirt yeah you know maybe when we're breaking full ice uh that's the time to do it but I think that's a fantastic idea uh we should run that by her yeah and if we could multiply that uh over time then I think you know you could really build something there.
- 1:18:41SPEAKER_08: I think I think that's a great idea.
- 1:18:42SPEAKER_05: Well I I would take it a step further I would I would invite the the Lady Falcons the Lady Liberty um the uh um you know the Lady Blues in the Cyclones I would invite all of them to come to a high school hockey game maybe a hockey night in St.
- 1:18:57SPEAKER_05: Louis game at Afton or Maryville or St.
- 1:19:00SPEAKER_05: Peter's where you have this unbelievable environment of high school kids and fans and you see this game and you look out there and it's like oh wait there's a couple girls out there playing hockey competing at this high level um that's how we grow this sport.
- 1:19:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah that's how we grow it I think that you know and and we talk about you know the girls part about this obviously there's a whole another uh aspect of this is is encouraging minority athletes to play the game as well and I think that but it's the same thing.
- 1:19:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah we have an opportunity with with mid-state high school hockey here at St.
- 1:19:30SPEAKER_08: Louis that's a great environment it's fun it's the same blueprint I like I like your idea take these kids that are in high school get them embedded in some of the younger uh age levels uh build them up scale them up uh give them an opportunity to see somebody on the ice that looks like them acts like them uh that they can relate to and if we do more of that then uh then I think we're on the right track.
- 1:19:55SPEAKER_05: Well I'm putting the challenge out there to myself to other coaches to to our to our NHL organization who I who's doing a phenomenal job of trying to grow this sport and grow it in communities that aren't your normal you know um hockey playing communities let's see if we can get folks to come out to a mid-states game or two and see how much fun that is and see what it's like to be on the ice in front of your your schoolmates who are cheering you on just like it was a football game.
- 1:20:20SPEAKER_05: You just need to show them the intro.
- 1:20:22SPEAKER_05: Let's go we'll show them the intro but uh you know um I I did want to end on the I mean you know I'm a trivia guy I like trivia.
- 1:20:31SPEAKER_05: Oh let's go all right so I was uh I was I don't know where this came up but I was reading something talking about the Hall of Fame.
- 1:20:39SPEAKER_05: Grant you're gonna learn something here.
- 1:20:43SPEAKER_05: So not including active players and Yarmor Jagger because he's just recently become deactivated so he hasn't been eligible to be in the Hall of Fame yet but not including active players and Yarmur Yager can you name one of the two highest point total players not in the Hall of Fame?
- 1:21:07SPEAKER_05: One of two so not including not including active players and Yarmur Jager who are the highest point total players not in the Hall of Fame.
- 1:21:17SPEAKER_05: And I thought about this because Alexander Mogilli just got in finally last year.
- 1:21:24SPEAKER_05: And what both of them both of them were two of my favorite like players growing up in the 80s and 90s.
- 1:21:31SPEAKER_03: Are they recently retired any of them?
- 1:21:33SPEAKER_05: No they're not they're not no they're not these would these would definitely be I would say you have to be born after 1972 to know these players before after 1972.
- 1:21:46SPEAKER_08: I'm trying to think of who is not in the hall of fame already that just had some ridiculous stats.
- 1:21:58SPEAKER_05: He's been in yeah yeah he got in he was Mr Buffalo Mr Tampa and in Toronto I'm gonna say uh is Paul Korean no but he's not he doesn't have the points he's not there but that's a good that's actually a really good guess yeah I thought I thought Paul Korea might be right there.
- 1:22:17SPEAKER_05: Yeah really good guess um grant what do you got I have no idea okay I'll take one more shot um yes yes all right and Jeremy Roading just got into not too long ago then I gotta do one more yeah um let's see early 90s I feel like somebody in like that era who's not quite in yet Steve Larmer ooh that's a great guess but no he doesn't have the points close doesn't have the points so the top two points I'm thinking of all the Sega from like 93 the one guy is the one guy is absolutely a Sega guy.
- 1:23:08SPEAKER_05: Both of these players have scored 50 goals one scored 70 and they're not in the hall of fame so I'll I'll I'll I'll and I'll I'll give you the team the two teams that they're most known for one was known for being one was known mostly as a Montreal Canadian but he did play for Edmonton he did play for Toronto and one is mostly known as an LA King and then he kicked around a little bit and played you know for the Rangers and I but I believe for um played for the Rangers and San Jose not Robotie no Robotai's in the hall he's in the hall of fame Montreal yeah you're gonna know you know both of them you know both of them going through my Sega 9394 roster let's get it let's get a Jeopardy riff here going Grant let's get the get the guy gotta get the Jeopardy riff going to be accountant for you gonna get it you're gonna get it you'll know Claude Lemieux no but Claude Lemieux is uh Claude Lemieux is one of those guys didn't have a lot of regular season points who is it Vincent Dante's number two but the number one most points by a player not in the hall of fame not naming Armor Jagger air active players Bernie Nichols Bernie 1271 points I I believe he scored seven he was a king he was 70 I think he had 72 goals one season I think really I think it was the first year with uh when when Gretzky was there um wow we had 1200 um 1200 uh 1200 um actually I think his highest he had 70 goals in 88 89 150 points he has the fourth wow he has the fourth highest single season point total by someone not named Gretzky Lemie or Isaac what year was that 89 1988 89 yeah there should be a Sega 89 there should be a Sega and then Vinny Vinnie Danfoos is Vinny Vincent Danfoos was like 1171 he was that extra guy on uh Sega he was good man yeah and but I just thought that that was that was good that was a good question yeah I like that see see Grant come on back here Grant this is how you frame questions it all just can't be Wayne Gretzky I like it got to do a little research there so um uh well hey man I think we've had a great show um shout out to all of our sponsors 5B Designs Fantage Cray Unit Afterlight um you know we wouldn't be able to do this without you we're excited to be partnering with one hockey and then obviously the mid-states hockey night in St.
- 1:26:29SPEAKER_05: Louis let's go let's bring the boys on here they come Grant don't miss next week's show as we have the preview to the Mid States hockey night in St.
