- 1:13Speaker 1: Ellery Queen over Radio was Hugh Marlowe, a famous stage
- 1:17Speaker 1: and screen actor. Marlowe starred as Ellery Queen in a
- 1:22Speaker 1: series of one hour stories that aired from nineteen thirty
- 1:27Speaker 1: nine to nineteen forty. Here, he's brought back by the
- 1:30Speaker 1: Ford Theater to once again take on the role and
- 1:34Speaker 1: with Santos Ortega and Ted de Cortia, who played Inspector
- 1:40Speaker 1: Queen and Sergeant Veeley in the original radio series. This
- 1:44Speaker 1: program originally aired January fourth of nineteen forty eight and
- 1:50Speaker 1: The title is the Adventure of a bad Boy.
- 1:54Speaker 2: This is the Ford Fitter, an hour of radio drama
- 1:57Speaker 2: presented by the Ford Motor Company of Ford, Mercury and
- 2:01Speaker 2: Lincoln Cars and Ford Trucks, Tractors and motor coaches. Today's

- 2:45Speaker 2: you will encounter at this hour just about every sort
- 2:48Speaker 2: of dramatic entertainment possible to radio. In the Ford Theater,
- 2:53Speaker 2: the plays the thing, and in choosing plays, the management
- 2:57Speaker 2: aims at quality, contrast, and varia. Last week an original
- 3:02Speaker 2: radio comedy, Next week a great motion picture adapted for radio,
- 3:07Speaker 2: and this week mystery. This week the Ford Theater presents
- 3:13Speaker 2: The Adventure of the Bad Boy by Ellery Queen. Now
- 3:28Speaker 2: there's a man I've always envied, Ellery Queen. He gets
- 3:31Speaker 2: around so much, meets so many different kinds of interesting people,
- 3:35Speaker 2: alive and dead. In the last few years on paper
- 3:39Speaker 2: and on the air, Kellery must have averaged one mysterious
- 3:43Speaker 2: murder case per week, each neatly solved in the end,
- 3:46Speaker 2: with the culprit delivered over to justice. And not only
- 3:50Speaker 2: does young mister Queen solve the mystery, he writes the
- 3:53Speaker 2: story too, between calls for help from the homicide squad. Also,
- 3:58Speaker 2: of late, he's found time to wed an excellent magazine
- 4:01Speaker 2: for detective story fans, to pen learned dissertations on the
- 4:05Speaker 2: gentle art of mystery fiction, and to publish, just last month,
- 4:10Speaker 2: an anthology of choice crime tales. He's a versatile man
- 4:15Speaker 2: allery and a busy one. He's also by this time
- 4:19Speaker 2: a legendary hero, an American Sherlock Holmes with thousands of
- 4:23Speaker 2: worshipful followers. We know that he's the son of Gruffs
- 4:27Speaker 2: Steely eydes not using Inspector Richard Queen, who can always
- 4:32Speaker 2: be reached at police headquarters on Center Street, Manhattan. And
- 4:37Speaker 2: we know that he employs as his secretary the beautiful, worshipful,
- 4:41Speaker 2: long suffering Nicki, who even now is typing up a
- 4:45Speaker 2: forthcoming chapter in the multitudinous works of Ellery Queen. Meanwhile,
- 4:51Speaker 2: Ellery relaxes in an armchair deep in fault.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Because mister Vegason nature is maddeningly logical, said Ellery Queen.
- 5:07Speaker 3: A bird flies, the sun rising, a river flows, and
- 5:17Speaker 3: the womb.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Sleeps underline and the womb sleep.
- 5:24Speaker 3: End of chapter, Ellerie, Ellerie, where are you.
- 5:30Speaker 2: The arm chair? Nikki? I'm finished, lucky girl?
- 5:33Speaker 4: Are you kidding?
- 5:35Speaker 2: Hum?
- 5:35Speaker 5: Hm?
- 5:36Speaker 3: All you have to do is dictate these foul mystery
- 5:39Speaker 3: masterpieces of yours.
- 5:40Speaker 2: I have to type them. Remember, I said, Remember what, Nikki?
- 5:46Speaker 6: Oh?
- 5:47Speaker 2: Skip it.
- 5:48Speaker 3: You haven't actually seen me for years now.
- 5:50Speaker 2: You don't even hear me. Ni, I'm sorry, think nothing
- 5:53Speaker 2: of it?
- 5:54Speaker 7: After all?
- 5:54Speaker 2: Who am I?
- 5:56Speaker 3: Birth of the typing machine girl? Even in the wet
- 6:00Speaker 3: shop the boss made a pass once in a while.
- 6:03Speaker 2: I'm sorry, Nikki, but I've been deep in thought. Really
- 6:07Speaker 2: about a little boy, Nikki, about a what a little boy? Why? Ellery? Yes,
- 6:14Speaker 2: it's time I did something about that situation.
- 6:18Speaker 3: You're the screwious character, Allori.
- 6:21Speaker 2: You would find a different way to do it.
- 6:23Speaker 6: What oh?
- 6:24Speaker 2: And I with being coy again?
- 6:27Speaker 3: Most men would start the other way round with the little.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Boy's mother, a very nice woman. I'm told, why thank
- 6:34Speaker 2: you coming from you?
- 6:36Speaker 3: Ellery, that's a lavish compliment.
- 6:39Speaker 2: I don't know. I'll have to think about it. Oh,
- 6:41Speaker 2: you don't have to think about it, Nikki. It's really
- 6:42Speaker 2: my problem, Ah, you egotist. Well I didn't think you'd
- 6:46Speaker 2: be interested.
- 6:47Speaker 3: Ellerie, Why do you think I've held on to this
- 6:49Speaker 3: thankless frustrating job all these years?
- 6:53Speaker 2: Interested? The first thing we'll have to do is tell
- 6:57Speaker 2: your father Dad. Oh no, NICKI quite yet, not yet.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Why keep it a secret from the inspector because I'm
- 7:04Speaker 2: not familiar with all the facts, Nikki. Fact. Yes, it
- 7:07Speaker 2: might not even be a matter for the police at all. Police. Yes,
- 7:10Speaker 2: I'll know more about it as soon as doctor Melton
- 7:11Speaker 2: gets here, which concidentally ought to be any minute now.
- 7:15Speaker 2: But would you clear away all this truck? Of course,
- 7:18Speaker 2: if you want to sit in and on it, I'll
- 7:19Speaker 2: be very glad to have you make notes.
- 7:21Speaker 3: Ellery Queen, exactly what little boy were.
- 7:26Speaker 2: You talking about? Bobby Hayes.
- 7:29Speaker 3: Bobby Hayes and the nice woman.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Bobby's mother, of course, Francis Hayes. I see you've seen
- 7:40Speaker 2: why NICKI wants the matter.
- 7:41Speaker 3: Oh nothing, nothing at all. No, don't you dare come
- 7:45Speaker 3: near me.
- 7:46Speaker 2: I don't seem to follow this at all. Oh, oh,
- 7:50Speaker 2: of course you don't know a thing about this case,
- 7:53Speaker 2: do you and here I've been talking is if you
- 7:55Speaker 2: knew all about it?
- 7:57Speaker 3: Yes, ha ha ha.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Well you just said right down here by the fire,
- 8:02Speaker 2: and I'll tell you the whole story, that is, if
- 8:05Speaker 2: you'd like to hear it.
- 8:05Speaker 3: Nicky, Oh, I'm simply fascinating.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Well, well, to begin with, I first got to know
- 8:11Speaker 2: about it when doctor Melton phoned me. He got the
- 8:14Speaker 2: story from the principals, his landlady Sarah Brinker spinster who
- 8:18Speaker 2: owns a small apartment house in Greenwich Village, and Sarah
- 8:21Speaker 2: Brink's unfortunate sister, Francis Francis Hayes, Missus Hayes, and her
- 8:26Speaker 2: little boy Bobby, who's eight, lived with Sarah Brink. I
- 8:32Speaker 2: think it was four nights ago that it Begair Bobby Bobby.
- 8:52Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, can't you say?
- 8:55Speaker 8: Yes, Auntie?

- 9:11Speaker 4: So it's my name too, No, my own name.
- 9:13Speaker 2: I guess your father's a bad man.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Bobby He ran away left you and your mother alone.
- 9:18Speaker 4: He did not. Mommy says he's did well.
- 9:22Speaker 6: It'll be unmercy if he were.

- 9:45Speaker 9: sister's little boy gives them nice soft beds to sleep
- 9:48Speaker 9: in and good things to eat, even money to bed.
- 9:52Speaker 9: Don't you think the little boy are the sort of

- 19:54Speaker 9: don't know why I've let you bring me here.
- 19:57Speaker 2: A detective, Miss Brink. It couldn't have enact.
- 20:00Speaker 6: Oh, cheers.
- 20:01Speaker 2: What do you suspect, doctor, I don't suspect. I know
- 20:05Speaker 2: Miss Brink was poisoned by accidents. Please, Miss Brink, I
- 20:09Speaker 2: suppose you're asserting that, not as a theory, doctor, but
- 20:12Speaker 2: as a fact judge for yourself. I know you've had
- 20:15Speaker 2: some experience with these things, mister Queen. Yes, Miss Brink
- 20:18Speaker 2: ate on an empty stomach. About ten minutes later, she
- 20:21Speaker 2: fell writhing to the floor. Symptoms burning pain and throat
- 20:25Speaker 2: and stomach, intense thirst, collapse, cyanosed skin, difficult respiration, cramps
- 20:32Speaker 2: in the calves of the leggs. Arsenical poisoning. Yes, how awful.
- 20:37Speaker 2: I suppose you had the remains of Miss Brink's portion
- 20:39Speaker 2: of STU analyzed, Doctor Melton. Of course it was heavily
- 20:43Speaker 2: dosed with arsenic Miss Brink. Who are your heirs my air?
- 20:49Speaker 9: Yes, well, my sister Chrancis.
- 20:52Speaker 6: She's my only living.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Your sister and her little boy. You mean he's your
- 20:57Speaker 2: nebuw isn't he, Miss Brink? Yes, comptably fixed, are you well?
- 21:01Speaker 3: I own my own house, have a few thousand dollars.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Any domestic help I do my old.
- 21:07Speaker 3: House work and cooking can't afford sence.
- 21:10Speaker 2: M I see Doctor Melton. Yes, mister Queen, I believe
- 21:14Speaker 2: you said, missus Hayes. Miss Brink's sister ate stew that
- 21:17Speaker 2: evening and showed no ill effects, none at all. Obviously,
- 21:21Speaker 2: then only the stew on your plate, Miss Brink, was poisoned.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Was your sister in the kitchen at any time during
- 21:27Speaker 2: the preparation of cooking of the stew?
- 21:29Speaker 6: Francis was away all day.
- 21:31Speaker 9: She didn't get back till a few minutes before I
- 21:33Speaker 9: fetched the two plates of stew from the kitchen and
- 21:36Speaker 9: set them on the dining room table.
- 21:38Speaker 2: Was your nephew in the kitchen while you were cooking? Bobby? Oh?
- 21:41Speaker 6: No, No, not at any time?
- 21:43Speaker 2: And after you set the plates down on the dining
- 21:45Speaker 2: room table, Miss brig did your sister have an opportunity
- 21:48Speaker 2: to drop arsenic into your plate? I tell you it
- 21:50Speaker 2: was an accident, did she?
- 21:52Speaker 6: No?
- 21:53Speaker 3: No, Just as I set the plates down, Bobby let
- 21:57Speaker 3: me can nearly escape, and Francis and I beg to
- 22:00Speaker 3: chase it.
- 22:00Speaker 2: I know that, miss Brink, I just wanted to be sure.
- 22:03Speaker 6: Uh.
- 22:04Speaker 2: By the way, what was your nephew doing while you
- 22:06Speaker 2: and missus Hayes were chasing the canary?
- 22:09Speaker 3: Why Bobby were seated at the.
- 22:12Speaker 2: Table, alone, alone and unobserved? No? I mean, yes, yes,
- 22:21Speaker 2: facts very often on Nikki dor Milton, take me home,
- 22:24Speaker 2: Miss Brink. You can't let this drop.
- 22:26Speaker 3: I won't have enough of birds sat uppy in tom Meta.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Understand. You may have no choice, Miss Brink. This is
- 22:31Speaker 2: a tempted murder. It's not.
- 22:33Speaker 3: It's not anyway. If you want to, dear mister Quen,
- 22:35Speaker 3: I I'll deny everything, yes, and you needn't try to
- 22:39Speaker 3: set me up here.
- 22:40Speaker 4: I won't pay it.
- 22:43Speaker 2: Boo, mister Queen, I didn't realize who was involved. I mean,
- 22:50Speaker 2: I think you ought to know though, that she's concealing
- 22:53Speaker 2: her real financial status. She owns half a dozen buildings
- 22:57Speaker 2: in Greenwich Village and she's one of the wealthiest women
- 22:59Speaker 2: in the neighborhood. I'm sure of that, Doctor Melton. Well,
- 23:02Speaker 2: i'd better get her back home. She's still pretty weak,
- 23:04Speaker 2: you know, and at her age it was a narrow escape.
- 23:07Speaker 2: I'm sorry, it's all right, doctor goodbye, goodbye, goodbye ellery.
- 23:13Speaker 2: Isn't there something you can do if she denies the
- 23:16Speaker 2: story and refuses to press charges, Nikki, I'm afraid not,
- 23:20Speaker 2: but I just can't believe it.
- 23:22Speaker 3: It's frightening an eight year old boy ellery.
- 23:27Speaker 2: Yes, Apparently the boy released the canary deliberately to lure
- 23:32Speaker 2: his mother and aunt away from the table so that
- 23:35Speaker 2: he could poison his aunt. Stew unobserved.
- 23:39Speaker 3: I don't care how much of an old witch Sarah
- 23:41Speaker 3: Brink is to do a thing like that, a boy
- 23:45Speaker 3: of eight, He must be a thene dellery psychopatha keys Well,
- 23:49Speaker 3: something ought to be done about it. The woman's in danger, that's.
- 23:52Speaker 2: Quite true, Nikki. Unsuccessful poisoners usually repeat, Nikki, what kind
- 24:00Speaker 2: of stew did Sarah Brink say she cooked that night?
- 24:02Speaker 2: Kind of stew? Yes? I don't know, Ellerie. I don't
- 24:05Speaker 2: think she said, oh, careless of me. I should have
- 24:07Speaker 2: asked her. Well about all we can do, Nigg is
- 24:11Speaker 2: to try to enter some social service agency and hope
- 24:14Speaker 2: for the best. Hand me the phone, will you? But
- 24:30Speaker 2: it wasn't to be.
- 24:32Speaker 3: Everything was closed for the New Year's weekend, and then
- 24:36Speaker 3: it was just yesterday afternoon. Elleri Queen's residence.
- 24:43Speaker 11: Not truly.

- 24:52Speaker 2: Yes, Dad, Alia never forget me.
- 24:54Speaker 6: But I didn't let you on this.

- 24:56Speaker 6: That guy is gays. I ever was all, can you
- 24:58Speaker 6: get down here in fifteen minutes?
- 24:59Speaker 2: Talk gime, hold hold them, hold home.
- 25:02Speaker 6: Witnesses to the crime.
- 25:03Speaker 2: Three three dozen?
- 25:05Speaker 6: What you don't know either'll probably be three hundred.
- 25:08Speaker 7: Of them dead.

- 26:11Speaker 2: women who bring healing knowledge and skill to even the
- 26:13Speaker 2: most remote farms and homes. Day after day, in all
- 26:17Speaker 2: kinds of weather. They make their rounds through forests and
- 26:20Speaker 2: mountains and deserts, going wherever they needed. And because their
- 26:24Speaker 2: work is so important and their travel is frequently difficult,
- 26:28Speaker 2: the Ford Motor Company is proud that so many doctors
- 26:31Speaker 2: prefer to drive Forward cars. One of these is doctor H. F.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Lawson of Crossville, Tennessee. The people who live and work
- 26:39Speaker 2: in the hills around Crossville know doctor Lawson very well.
- 26:43Speaker 2: Summer or winter, dust or snow or mud, over the
- 26:47Speaker 2: roughest roads and steepest hills, doctor Lawson gets there when
- 26:51Speaker 2: he's needed. Recently, doctor Lawson wrote to the Ford Motor
- 26:54Speaker 2: Company to say why he preferred to drive a Ford.
- 26:58Speaker 2: He said that he can always start his forday any
- 27:00Speaker 2: kind of weather, that it rides comfortably, that his Ford
- 27:03Speaker 2: always takes him where he wants to go, no matter
- 27:05Speaker 2: how bad the driving conditions, My Ford has never failed
- 27:09Speaker 2: to come through, he wrote. As a rural doctor, I
- 27:13Speaker 2: am qualified to say that no other car can beat
- 27:15Speaker 2: a Ford for all round performance under all conditions. That's
- 27:20Speaker 2: the kind of service and dependability that millions of Americans
- 27:24Speaker 2: have learned to expect from Ford products. That's the kind
- 27:28Speaker 2: of performance you can expect from any products made by Ford.
- 27:45Speaker 2: BacT Too of The Adventure of the Bad Boy will
- 27:48Speaker 2: be presented after a brief pause for station identifications the

- 28:17Speaker 2: ellery Queen and Nikki to hail a tab hop in
- 28:20Speaker 2: the same and head for thirty six B Washington Square North,
- 28:23Speaker 2: the scene of the crime. We picked them up as

- 30:52Speaker 6: Hall, ep Son.

- 32:37Speaker 2: That can't possibly be a mistake. Doubt my boy is
- 32:40Speaker 2: the deity of science. But in this case I'd staked
- 32:43Speaker 2: my professional reputation. It was our seniors. Oxide white aw
- 32:48Speaker 2: snake bet a no an autopsy right away, Pratty, make
- 32:51Speaker 2: sure naturally runches test to do the trick. She'd have
- 32:56Speaker 2: been luckier if she'd been born a rabbit. Arsnik won't

- 33:14Speaker 7: Wh was she a male in person?
- 33:16Speaker 8: Here?
- 33:18Speaker 5: Uh?
- 33:19Speaker 7: Interesting myself? Well i'll be observe.
- 33:25Speaker 2: I have nothing of my sleeve. I insert my right
- 33:28Speaker 2: hand in the hat. Hocus pocus open sesame to erlen Spiegel,
- 33:32Speaker 2: presto a rabbit?
- 33:34Speaker 6: Very interesting?
- 33:35Speaker 2: So what? Uh? Merely one bunny too scared runaway when
- 33:39Speaker 2: you boys opened the door. Sergeant took refuge in this
- 33:42Speaker 2: so tougher h top hat and rabbits the murder must
- 33:48Speaker 2: have been committed by a magician.
- 33:49Speaker 6: Huh did I tell you really?
- 33:52Speaker 2: My star?
- 33:53Speaker 7: You throw me your thrownck over that butt here?
- 33:57Speaker 2: Did I tell you say that?
- 33:58Speaker 6: Really?
- 33:59Speaker 2: I bet your friend more but death. I wasn't serious,
- 34:02Speaker 2: that I am. He was poisoned by a magician. All right,
- 34:05Speaker 2: I've got him in the living room right now under arrest.
- 34:08Speaker 2: You mean there's actually a magician mixed up in this Oh?
- 34:12Speaker 2: Of course the actor uh huh live downstairs across the
- 34:15Speaker 2: hardened weber, the violin teacher and Bardo magician.
- 34:18Speaker 7: Manestra calls himself Guardini, the great.
- 34:21Speaker 2: Mmm. I want to see him plenty. Spector didn't even
- 34:33Speaker 2: acting up, uh jealous or rabbit. I don't mean to
- 34:36Speaker 2: tell you how to run your business, Inspector. But believe me,
- 34:39Speaker 2: I didn't poison Sarah Brink. I know, Gardeini, You're just
- 34:43Speaker 2: a victim of a plant. Is my SONII. He wants
- 34:46Speaker 2: to tell you, mister Gardini, I'm very much interested in
- 34:49Speaker 2: Sarah Brink's death. I'm told you were home today in
- 34:52Speaker 2: your apartment of her around noon when she was poisoned.
- 34:55Speaker 7: That's right, mister queen. I'm temporarily at Liberty you gotta
- 34:58Speaker 7: use your.
- 34:58Speaker 2: Time to better advance just a moment, sergeant. I'm told too,
- 35:03Speaker 2: mister Gordini, that the fire escape makes it possible for
- 35:06Speaker 2: you to have been just outside Sarah Brink's kitchen window,
- 35:09Speaker 2: while the two plates of rabbit stew, which Miss Brink
- 35:11Speaker 2: and her sister, missus Hayes ate for lunch today, stood
- 35:14Speaker 2: on the serving cabinet near the kitchen windows. Yes, mister queen,
- 35:17Speaker 2: but the kitchen window has an iron grill which can
- 35:19Speaker 2: only be opened from inside. All the windows at the
- 35:21Speaker 2: back of his house have How am I supposed to
- 35:23Speaker 2: have got past those bars?
- 35:25Speaker 6: Well, there's thing that jake god Denny.
- 35:27Speaker 2: Where'd you get my lazy tones?
- 35:29Speaker 7: It's not a lazy time? And what are they?
- 35:31Speaker 2: Inspectors like a para, says Babie, opens and shoots out
- 35:35Speaker 2: and criss crossing slats like this.
- 35:37Speaker 7: What's time? You missed my schnoz by half an inch?
- 35:41Speaker 6: I missed, didn't I?
- 35:43Speaker 2: You got the idea entry, Yes, it's part of Gordeny's
- 35:45Speaker 2: magic equipment comes from his stuff downstairs. The Denny used
- 35:50Speaker 2: too on the fire escape outside the brink kitchen window
- 35:52Speaker 2: and dropped Darsonik and the Sarah's plate of stew from
- 35:55Speaker 2: the end of these tongs through the grail.
- 35:57Speaker 7: What can I do but deny? And it's not true.
- 36:00Speaker 2: The top hat that's packets inside, Guardeeny, a regular magician's hat.
- 36:04Speaker 2: You admitted your of course it's mine, but you're innocent.
- 36:06Speaker 2: How did it get into the brink woman's bedroom. I
- 36:09Speaker 2: don't know, dead.
- 36:12Speaker 6: I didn't.
- 36:13Speaker 2: I've had you check this afternoon. He real handles Gardon,
- 36:15Speaker 2: Algan and Gardon. And you were a chemist before he
- 36:17Speaker 2: became a stage magician, and you'd know all about arsony.
- 36:21Speaker 2: Wouldn't you miss that garden, GUARDEENI, I see, I'm to
- 36:23Speaker 2: be convicted on coincidence, no coincidence, that you've been quarreling
- 36:26Speaker 2: with the murdered woman, Gardeeny.
- 36:28Speaker 6: The whole neighborhood knows about.
- 36:29Speaker 2: It, calling about what all, saying as the young lady
- 36:32Speaker 2: told him to keep away from her sister Francis and
- 36:34Speaker 2: the kid bombing. Oh that's pretty circumstantial, Dad, and bat
- 36:40Speaker 2: this around, Ellerie. I've got a witness who lives in
- 36:42Speaker 2: a McDougall Alley house opposite the back windows here.
- 36:45Speaker 6: My witness say she saw Gordeeny's.
- 36:46Speaker 2: Standing on the fire escape outside sarah brings kitchen window
- 36:50Speaker 2: at just about the time that rabbit still must have
- 36:53Speaker 2: been poisoned. Is that true, Gordeini?
- 36:56Speaker 6: Yes, mister Queen, I was there.
- 36:58Speaker 2: What I was? Well, Snoopy, Why I'd rather not say?
- 37:04Speaker 2: Very lame God, Denny, that's the best you can do. Dad,
- 37:08Speaker 2: There's one fact you've overlooked. The punch is a pretty
- 37:10Speaker 2: big hole in your Gardeeny theory.
- 37:12Speaker 6: My, that's done.
- 37:13Speaker 2: Francis Hayes had stew for lunch today, too, didn't she. Yes,
- 37:16Speaker 2: she wasn't poisoned, was she now? But both plates of stew,
- 37:20Speaker 2: you say, the one which Sarah ate and the one
- 37:21Speaker 2: which Francis ate were on a serving cabinet near the
- 37:24Speaker 2: kitchen window accessible to Gordeeny on the fire escape through
- 37:28Speaker 2: the lazy tongs. How could GORDEENI have known which plate
- 37:32Speaker 2: was Sarah's? Yes?
- 37:33Speaker 6: How could I have known?
- 37:36Speaker 7: Maestro's got something there?
- 37:37Speaker 2: Inspector. As for Gordeini's top hat being in Sarah's bedroom,
- 37:43Speaker 2: Bobby Hayes told me he brought it there this morning.
- 37:45Speaker 6: Yes, yes, I'd forgotten that.
- 37:46Speaker 2: That's quite possible.
- 37:47Speaker 7: Bobby often plays with my paraphernative.
- 37:49Speaker 2: Furthermore, the rabbits aren't Gordeeny's. They were Sarah Brinks. She
- 37:52Speaker 2: sometimesn't sped them in her room. I think that pretty
- 37:55Speaker 2: well explodes the circumstantial case against Gordeeny.
- 37:58Speaker 7: Thank you, mister queen.
- 37:59Speaker 2: But I'm not through with you. You're obviously conceiving something.
- 38:04Speaker 2: What is it? I don't know what you mean, Gardeeny.
- 38:07Speaker 2: I think you know poisoned Sarah Brink? Do you you do?
- 38:13Speaker 2: Don't you?
- 38:15Speaker 7: Now?
- 38:15Speaker 2: Talkie, see if you can make Gardeeny change his mind?
- 38:18Speaker 7: Dad?
- 38:19Speaker 6: Where you going?
- 38:20Speaker 2: Oh? The snoop around?
- 38:37Speaker 3: I knew something horrible would happen in this huse.
- 38:39Speaker 4: I knew it.
- 38:40Speaker 3: I knew it. Honey, missus Hayes, you've got to control yourself. Yes,
- 38:49Speaker 3: Bobby Son, it's all right, And don't befried, baby. And
- 38:54Speaker 3: Sarah's just gone away, Bobby, Why she's dead?
- 38:58Speaker 2: Long? Bobby? Who is that?
- 39:01Speaker 3: He's probably an officer?
- 39:03Speaker 2: Come in? Oh, Nicky, ellery well led you with missus Hayes. Nikki, Hi, Bobby, Hi.
- 39:14Speaker 3: Miss Porter's been a great help, mister queen.

- 39:18Speaker 2: Well sometimes I wonder, Bobby, Missus Hayes, all the pets
- 39:22Speaker 2: in this house Canary cat goldfish. They were your sister Sarah's,
- 39:26Speaker 2: weren't they? And the rabbits too, mister queen. Oh yes,
- 39:28Speaker 2: the rabbit. I assume she didn't quarter them in her
- 39:31Speaker 2: bedroom permanently. Where did she usually keep them, missus Hayes.
- 39:35Speaker 3: In the backyard, A real rabbit hatch.
- 39:37Speaker 2: That's so bobby, Yeah, Sarah, missus Hayes who fed them?
- 39:41Speaker 3: Sarah wouldn't let anyone else take care of you remembered something,
- 39:45Speaker 3: missus Hayes. Yes, Sarah had an argument last week, mister Webber.
- 39:51Speaker 3: She caught him feeding her rabbits in the yard.
- 39:54Speaker 4: Why did she tell him off?
- 39:55Speaker 2: Webber? Must be Webber playing the violin. Now excuse me dodging.
- 40:00Speaker 7: You have my straw?
- 40:01Speaker 2: Have Webber brought up? Will you? Now that's constructed? Anything
- 40:04Speaker 2: to stop that? Siddle or missus Hayes. You had rabbit
- 40:09Speaker 2: stew rather often, didn't you, at.
- 40:11Speaker 6: Least once a week.
- 40:12Speaker 3: Sarah is was very fond of it. She killed her
- 40:16Speaker 3: own rabbits. They were multiplying so rapidly.
- 40:18Speaker 4: I don't like rabbit stew. Yeah, Mom doesn't either. She
- 40:21Speaker 4: only ate it because Aunt Sarah made.
- 40:23Speaker 2: A Bobby just after your sister brought the plates of
- 40:26Speaker 2: stew into the dining room for lunch today, Missus Hayes,
- 40:29Speaker 2: did the did anything unusual happen unusual? Well, I don't
- 40:34Speaker 2: think I well, like uh, like the escape of the
- 40:36Speaker 2: canary last week.
- 40:38Speaker 3: Well, you mustn't think Bobby's a bad boy, mister Queen.
- 40:40Speaker 3: He's just mischievous like most boys of his age.
- 40:42Speaker 2: And he didn't he did happen at lunch today?
- 40:45Speaker 4: Are you can telling mom? I pushed over a fishbowl?

- 41:07Speaker 3: Bobby, you mustn't talk that way about.
- 41:11Speaker 4: Well, Inspector, Sergeant.

- 41:33Speaker 10: Up here about the sister, how do you say sad music,
- 41:37Speaker 10: missus Hayes, I have sad feelings. I play sad music
- 41:42Speaker 10: what I am from where I come, and it's all
- 41:44Speaker 10: sad everything everyone, even here.
- 41:48Speaker 2: I cannot forget, mister Webber. I understand you fed Sarah

- 41:56Speaker 2: was very angry with you, and tell.
- 41:58Speaker 8: I sit in the backyard, say, thinking of khne Stutta
- 42:02Speaker 8: sue Cow. I play my violin, I lay it on
- 42:05Speaker 8: the bench, I feed the bunny.
- 42:07Speaker 2: Miss Brink.
- 42:08Speaker 8: She comes out, she takes my violin. She breaks it
- 42:11Speaker 8: in little pieces. She is like a crazy woman. That
- 42:15Speaker 8: is my good violin. The other, the one I play
- 42:19Speaker 8: now on, that is not so good.
- 42:22Speaker 10: There I had a vile temper.
- 42:25Speaker 3: I'm sorry, mister Webbert, I didn't.
- 42:27Speaker 2: Know about that. Cheerly.
- 42:29Speaker 8: I want you shall pay for my instrument. I am poor,
- 42:33Speaker 8: But she says no, I should move.
- 42:36Speaker 2: I do.
- 42:37Speaker 8: I move tomorrow, and doctor Melton he's moving also.
- 42:43Speaker 6: Oh really, and try doctor Melton.
- 42:45Speaker 2: Yes, as soon as I can find new quarters in
- 42:47Speaker 2: this neighborhood. Why are you moving, doctor, Well, my patients
- 42:51Speaker 2: are all pretty poor, mister Queen. They don't play very well.
- 42:54Speaker 2: I've been behind in my rent. The other day Miss
- 42:57Speaker 2: Spring said she wouldn't wait any longer. That well, i'd
- 42:59Speaker 2: have to get out, doctor Melton.
- 43:01Speaker 3: I didn't know that either.
- 43:03Speaker 2: I know, missus Hayes, I.
- 43:04Speaker 3: Suppose I own this house now, or you don't have
- 43:08Speaker 3: to move.
- 43:09Speaker 2: You've been here so long, doctor. That's very decent of you,
- 43:14Speaker 2: Missus Hayses.
- 43:14Speaker 3: And you too, mister Webber. You stay on and as
- 43:18Speaker 3: soon as I can, I'll pay.
- 43:20Speaker 2: For your broken violin. Donkys shuld dunk?
- 43:23Speaker 3: You shouldn't take your call.
- 43:38Speaker 7: Last it for then?
- 43:39Speaker 3: Ah.
- 43:39Speaker 2: This rank is one part luck, ninety nine parts waiting reports, reports,
- 43:43Speaker 2: Where are they inspector?
- 43:46Speaker 3: You want to be ashamed of yourself kicking that cat here?
- 43:51Speaker 2: Pause?
- 43:51Speaker 3: Don't but the nasty old man hurt your feeling.
- 43:54Speaker 2: That's goldfish, canaries, rabbits, regular zoos.
- 43:57Speaker 6: No, look at me, that winnepe.
- 43:58Speaker 7: I didn't kick the confounded beasts.
- 43:59Speaker 6: I didn't know he was there there.
- 44:01Speaker 3: He's apologized.
- 44:02Speaker 2: Course, he's a nice, nasty old man. I mean, what's
- 44:06Speaker 2: the answer to it's blanted ridder if Cardini didn't point
- 44:09Speaker 2: in the stew I've got a notion, Dad, just the
- 44:12Speaker 2: vegus notion. Oh, the great.
- 44:14Speaker 4: Man has a notion.
- 44:15Speaker 3: Imagine that course wood ever grow up to be a
- 44:19Speaker 3: great big idea.
- 44:22Speaker 7: Won't swipe my gun? My gun, Inspector, my rod? Somebody
- 44:26Speaker 7: left him right out of my horser? Was that one?
- 44:29Speaker 7: I don't come on, was it.
- 44:34Speaker 8: Dogeant?
- 44:34Speaker 3: I'm ashamed of you.
- 44:35Speaker 2: You better find it, biy before it turns up on
- 44:37Speaker 2: the scene of a crime.
- 44:40Speaker 7: No, I'll never hear the end of this.
- 44:45Speaker 3: It's the funniest.
- 44:48Speaker 2: Who is my handkerchief? Funny?
- 44:54Speaker 3: Sure it was in my bag?
- 44:55Speaker 2: Your handkerchiefs missing, Nicky?
- 44:57Speaker 3: No, well in my compact. Wait, it isn't here.
- 45:01Speaker 2: What is now?
- 45:02Speaker 7: You better take a look at yourself.
- 45:04Speaker 2: Son, my f it's gone. Hey, why snuff box?
- 45:11Speaker 6: Inspector, Oh flint, what is it?
- 45:13Speaker 2: Doc? Probably just hold from the morgue. He said something
- 45:15Speaker 2: about some mucus hemorrhages showing up in the PM or something. Anyway,
- 45:19Speaker 2: the old dames dying of arsenic poison. And he says, well,
- 45:23Speaker 2: that's bank plant. When you know that, Well, there's a
- 45:28Speaker 2: report from the city taxa cologist too, you know that
- 45:31Speaker 2: white stuff looked like flower we scraped up from the
- 45:33Speaker 2: floor of the rabbit hutch. Dead. You found a white
- 45:35Speaker 2: powder in the backyard rabbit.
- 45:37Speaker 6: Hutch, cheers hand before you got here?
- 45:39Speaker 7: So what well?
- 45:40Speaker 2: The toxicologists says, that's arty too, Arsenick and the rabbit hutch.
- 45:44Speaker 2: Why didn't someone tell me, I, inspector, h.
- 45:47Speaker 6: I chill again.
- 45:48Speaker 7: I found my gun on the downstairs hall table. My gun,
- 45:53Speaker 7: and you're a snuffbox by the way.
- 45:55Speaker 6: Uh give me there.
- 45:57Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 45:58Speaker 3: You didn't find a com backed by any chance, Sergeant.
- 46:01Speaker 7: I'm sure, Dad, yess yours? Miss pointer? Thank you don't
- 46:05Speaker 7: tell me?
- 46:05Speaker 3: Am?
- 46:06Speaker 7: I sure this fountain pen of yours?
- 46:08Speaker 2: Yes, yes, sergeant, Thanks, they're all downstairs, whole table. Uh uh.
- 46:15Speaker 7: Awful funny around here.
- 46:17Speaker 2: Someone swiped something for me, each one of us. It
- 46:21Speaker 2: was a plain sight to be found.
- 46:24Speaker 3: Thief who returns his loot that he didn't.
- 46:26Speaker 6: Want to stop bay in saying that he steal it
- 46:28Speaker 6: in the first place.
- 46:29Speaker 7: That's it.
- 46:29Speaker 2: What is the key to the whole case? Ellery?
- 46:33Speaker 13: You mean the one.
- 46:34Speaker 2: Who's stalling the key, the key to the whole case,
- 46:53Speaker 2: The key to the whole case somewhere around this point.
- 46:57Speaker 2: I believe it used to be novelist queen's practice to
- 47:00Speaker 2: challenge the reader to name the culprit with all the
- 47:03Speaker 2: pertinent facts at his disposal. My guess always goes wrong,
- 47:08Speaker 2: and in this case I suspect so as yours act
- 47:11Speaker 2: three will shall we say let the cat out of
- 47:15Speaker 2: the bag or the rabbit out of the hat? And
- 47:18Speaker 2: so you might just as well give up, stop guessing
- 47:21Speaker 2: and relax and listen to Kenneth Stanghart for the Ford
- 47:24Speaker 2: Motor Company. During the past forty four years, the experience
- 47:29Speaker 2: of millions of people has proven countless times that Ford
- 47:32Speaker 2: products are outstanding for their reliability, economy, and service. Three
- 47:37Speaker 2: generations have recognized the name Ford as an American symbol
- 47:40Speaker 2: of quality and dependability. And now there is another definite
- 47:45Speaker 2: scientific proof of Ford quality on a large scale. A
- 47:49Speaker 2: recent study conducted by independent life insurance experts determine the
- 47:54Speaker 2: life expectancy of the five largest selling makes of trucks.
- 47:58Speaker 2: The experts tabulated and studied the history of almost five
- 48:01Speaker 2: million trucks and established the average life expectancy of each make.
- 48:06Speaker 2: That study proved that Ford trucks last ten percent longer
- 48:10Speaker 2: than the average truck it proved that Ford trucks last
- 48:13Speaker 2: up to nineteen and six tens percent longer than their
- 48:16Speaker 2: four principal competitors. This scientific study is conclusive proof of
- 48:21Speaker 2: what Ford truck owners have known for a long time,
- 48:24Speaker 2: that Ford trucks last longer. It's an unusually important tribute
- 48:28Speaker 2: to the quality of Ford products. But even this outstanding
- 48:31Speaker 2: record is not good enough. True to the Ford tradition,
- 48:35Speaker 2: Ford trucks are constantly being improved. Soon there will be
- 48:38Speaker 2: new model Ford trucks with new power, versatility and beauty.
- 48:42Speaker 2: They will be built on a basic principle of engineering,
- 48:45Speaker 2: which assures even longer life for Ford trucks. And you
- 48:49Speaker 2: will be served better because the organization that has built
- 48:52Speaker 2: more trucks than any other, Ford builds trucks stronger to
- 48:56Speaker 2: last longer. You can depend on Ford. As the previous attendant.
- 49:12Speaker 2: You will recall Ellerie Queen had just discovered the keys
- 49:16Speaker 2: for the whole case to which as are curtain rises
- 49:19Speaker 2: once more, Nicky makes replies.
- 49:23Speaker 3: You know, Ellerie, you're the most exasperating man alive. You
- 49:27Speaker 3: mislead people me.
- 49:29Speaker 2: For instance, what NICKI, oh, I know you're not listening.
- 49:32Speaker 3: You never do make people think things, then it turns
- 49:36Speaker 3: out to be something entirely different. The inspector can't help himself,
- 49:40Speaker 3: after all, he's your father. But someday I'm just what this?
- 49:45Speaker 2: Nikky? Oh? Why do I always fall for an.
- 49:50Speaker 3: Old closet key to the whole case? What key?
- 49:58Speaker 6: No answer?
- 49:59Speaker 3: The great man wraps himself a mystery, Hush hush, top secret, Elloie,
- 50:05Speaker 3: Will you come out of that closet and listen?
- 50:08Speaker 2: You come into this closet and listen.
- 50:10Speaker 3: Huhh here it Nikki, sound hollow? Something funny about that wall?
- 50:19Speaker 3: This is Bobby's bedroom.
- 50:21Speaker 2: Look sliding panel? Who medieval?
- 50:27Speaker 6: Isn't it?
- 50:27Speaker 2: Ery? No, Nikki, simply eight year old boy Bobby saw
- 50:31Speaker 2: him through the back wall of his closet. Let's see
- 50:33Speaker 2: what's behind this panel? Secret passages?
- 50:37Speaker 7: Yet here?
- 50:37Speaker 2: Give me that flash, Nikki, slight of wooden stairs going?
- 50:43Speaker 4: How are you rich? You've got the flesh here?
- 50:45Speaker 2: Nikki, watch your step, ELLOI.
- 50:48Speaker 3: Doesn't that violin of webber sound louder?
- 50:51Speaker 2: This passage apparently ex as an amplifier word leaves the
- 50:57Speaker 2: door just an old attic?
- 51:05Speaker 3: Uh, Pobby couldn't have.
- 51:07Speaker 2: DOLPHI stairs hardly an old house, Nikki. Part of the original.
- 51:12Speaker 2: The stairs were probably boarded up during some red elevation
- 51:15Speaker 2: and Bobby's rediscovered them. What's that if you leave me and.
- 51:21Speaker 7: You're in the dog Come here, Nikki.
- 51:25Speaker 2: Look at this sign sign Robert Hayes, magician Bobby's handiwork. Oh,
- 51:31Speaker 2: what's this box?
- 51:34Speaker 3: You're also messing there?
- 51:36Speaker 2: Yes, card tncuffs, trick, coins on handkerchiefs, ropes, collapsible knife,
- 51:44Speaker 2: the usual magician's truck. Ah, don't try to impress me.
- 51:50Speaker 2: What's the mad packet?
- 51:51Speaker 3: Magic? Halty?
- 51:52Speaker 2: I'm afraid, Nikki, it is the more deadly magic than that.
- 51:55Speaker 2: I'm more deadly a white powder, Nikki, white arsenic. Can't
- 52:05Speaker 2: believe that.
- 52:05Speaker 7: I just can't do.
- 52:09Speaker 2: I wonder why Gordeini didn't tell the truth. He knew
- 52:12Speaker 2: all the time, miss.
- 52:15Speaker 3: A boy a boy of aid.
- 52:19Speaker 2: Well, let's go downstairs, Nikki and get it over with.
- 52:30Speaker 11: Well, despot, the discouragement of our host against trying to
- 52:35Speaker 11: solve this baffling puzzle, We're gonna make a stab at it.
- 52:40Speaker 11: And joining me to as our armchair detective is Christy
- 52:45Speaker 11: from Spokane Valley, Washington. She's a writer and a jewelry designer.
- 52:51Speaker 11: And Christy, you've listened to the case, and what is
- 52:56Speaker 11: who do you think didn't.
- 53:00Speaker 12: I listened to it two and a half times, and
- 53:05Speaker 12: about the only thing I've come up with is I
- 53:07Speaker 12: don't think the boy did it. I have a suspicion
- 53:11Speaker 12: that the aunt actually potentially poisoned herself the first time
- 53:18Speaker 12: as a means of teaching the boy a lesson and
- 53:21Speaker 12: getting him in trouble, because it just seems like something
- 53:24Speaker 12: based off of what we were hearing she would have done.
- 53:28Speaker 12: I don't think the mother or the boy actually did
- 53:32Speaker 12: the poisoning for the action for the killer, but I
- 53:36Speaker 12: could not figure out who would have had enough motive
- 53:41Speaker 12: to do the actual killing for that final poisoning.
- 53:47Speaker 11: Well, we've got a negative guess that it's not the
- 53:53Speaker 11: boy or his mother, right.
- 53:57Speaker 12: I just don't think that. I, you know, if anything,
- 54:01Speaker 12: if he did it the first time, it would have
- 54:02Speaker 12: been I don't think it was on purpose, But I
- 54:04Speaker 12: think that she actually poisoned herself the first time, just
- 54:10Speaker 12: to further corral the boys, you know, her sister into
- 54:19Speaker 12: submission as a see, see this is how bad your
- 54:23Speaker 12: boy is? And see aren't I doing a nice thing
- 54:25Speaker 12: by taking care of him? Despite the fact that he
- 54:29Speaker 12: tried to kill me. Just sounds like something she would
- 54:32Speaker 12: have done.
- 54:34Speaker 11: Okay, well we will see if you're right in just
- 54:38Speaker 11: a second. And thanks so much for joining us today.
- 54:43Speaker 12: Thank you.
- 54:44Speaker 14: All right, Well, let's get now back to ellery queen
- 54:47Speaker 14: and the solution to our mystery.
- 54:56Speaker 6: You know I've seen everything you have.
- 54:58Speaker 7: I've got all the fats.
- 54:59Speaker 2: They don't add do a thing bad mathematics.
- 55:01Speaker 7: Dad, Unless.
- 55:04Speaker 2: Again, mister Bobby hay a chat.
- 55:08Speaker 7: I'm not simon the wrong racket.
- 55:10Speaker 2: E will please do it quickly?
- 55:12Speaker 3: His poor mother is so upset.
- 55:13Speaker 2: All right, all right, let's go, but I'll be balling
- 55:16Speaker 2: in a minute.
- 55:17Speaker 3: Why please, please, Bobby, Bobby, dear hand, mom?
- 55:25Speaker 4: What are they going to do now?
- 55:27Speaker 2: Why?
- 55:27Speaker 4: If everybody so quiet?
- 55:29Speaker 3: Bobby, I want you to do something for mother. I
- 55:32Speaker 3: want you to go to my bedroom and stay there.
- 55:34Speaker 4: Oh Mom, I want to see I never saw a
- 55:37Speaker 4: real detective. Get his name.
- 55:38Speaker 2: I want to send Bobby. Please go, Missus Hayes, Missus Hayes.
- 55:42Speaker 2: I prefer Bobby to remain here here Green.
- 55:47Speaker 6: Why don't you let the boy go? This is no
- 55:48Speaker 6: place for a child eight years old?
- 55:50Speaker 2: And suppose you tell us mister Gordini, who poisoned Sarah Brink.
- 55:54Speaker 2: Tell us and I'll send Bobby away.
- 55:56Speaker 4: No, I don't want to go away.
- 55:58Speaker 2: Why won't you tell us? Mister Gordeini?
- 56:00Speaker 7: Of course I've got no proof.
- 56:02Speaker 6: You wouldn't believe me.
- 56:03Speaker 2: I see, Gardeini, when you were on the fire escape,
- 56:08Speaker 2: you were looking for proof, weren't you. Yes, Bobby, you
- 56:12Speaker 2: and mister gordeeny are great pals. I take it, Bobby.
- 56:15Speaker 4: Quiet, Oh, mom, sure, and mister Queen were.
- 56:18Speaker 3: Just like that.
- 56:19Speaker 2: And Bobby's at the age Gordeini when he's most susceptible
- 56:21Speaker 2: to the fascinations of secret passages, sliding panels and magic. Right, Gordeini,
- 56:29Speaker 2: you've been teaching Bobby magic.
- 56:30Speaker 4: Haven't you want to see all the tricks mister Gardini
- 56:32Speaker 4: showed me?
- 56:33Speaker 6: Bobby, don't say anything.
- 56:34Speaker 2: And when mister Gordeni showed you all these marvelous magic tricks, Bobby,
- 56:38Speaker 2: just what he tell.
- 56:39Speaker 4: You when I had a practice all the time. Practicing
- 56:42Speaker 4: is the way you get to be a great magician.
- 56:44Speaker 2: And the Sergeant Peeley's revolver, Bobby my fountain, pen, inspector
- 56:49Speaker 2: Queen's rough box, and oh, miss Porter's compact when you
- 56:53Speaker 2: took them from us under our noses. Bobby, you were
- 56:55Speaker 2: simply practicing, weren't you.
- 56:58Speaker 3: Bobby stole things?
- 57:00Speaker 6: He couldn't.
- 57:00Speaker 3: He's only a boy. He didn't know what he was doing.
- 57:02Speaker 4: I too, mom Oh ye, I wasn't stealing him. I
- 57:05Speaker 4: left him right in the downstairs hall table, didn't I.
- 57:07Speaker 2: That's how I knew it was you, Bobby.
- 57:09Speaker 4: I just wanted to see about Cord, mister Queen.
- 57:11Speaker 3: That's not stealing, Bobby.
- 57:13Speaker 4: Bobby, I didn't steal.
- 57:14Speaker 2: I didn't steal, and didn't getting it over with when
- 57:17Speaker 2: you and Bobby, you took that packet of white powder too,
- 57:20Speaker 2: didn't you? White powder and hid it in your attic hideout? Mmm?
- 57:24Speaker 3: I Bobby, don't answer.
- 57:26Speaker 2: Let the boy answer, Missus Hayes, please, Bobby.
- 57:32Speaker 4: Mister Gorde he told me to look for packages of
- 57:34Speaker 4: white powder like sorry. He said to take him and
- 57:37Speaker 4: give him him to the coastals clear, but that one
- 57:40Speaker 4: he had it. I didn't get the chance, mister Gardeeny,
- 57:43Speaker 4: I was going to give it to you.
- 57:44Speaker 2: Bobby.
- 57:44Speaker 6: Don't say anymore, not Gordeeny.
- 57:47Speaker 2: What is this nry? Bobby? What else did mister Gardeeny
- 57:49Speaker 2: tell you to do?
- 57:50Speaker 3: Well?
- 57:50Speaker 2: Then he didn't tell me nothing, Bobby. Bobby, you can
- 57:53Speaker 2: tell me because I know you do.
- 57:57Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, sure, you're the doctors know everything. But
- 58:03Speaker 4: I have promised not to.
- 58:05Speaker 2: Tell well, and suppose I tell you, Bobby, and then
- 58:07Speaker 2: it won't be breaking a promise, will it. Mister Gordeeny
- 58:11Speaker 2: told you there was something you had to do to
- 58:12Speaker 2: save your mother's life. Isn't that right?
- 58:15Speaker 5: She help you know that?
- 58:17Speaker 2: To save my life, mister queen, and Bobby, my life.
- 58:20Speaker 2: You had to do that thing every time there was
- 58:22Speaker 2: rabbit stew for lunch or supper, didn't.
- 58:25Speaker 4: You, Yes, sir, it was something fierce. I had a
- 58:28Speaker 4: watch all the time. I had to save my mother's wife.
- 58:32Speaker 4: I don't know why, but that's what mister GORDONI to Bobby.
- 58:36Speaker 2: And when you couldn't do this certain thing that mister
- 58:38Speaker 2: Gordeeny had told you to do, Bobby, when you couldn't
- 58:41Speaker 2: do it without your mother not seeing you, you were
- 58:44Speaker 2: a very smart boy. You decided to distract their attention.
- 58:47Speaker 4: The what magicians do when you don't want them to
- 58:49Speaker 4: see a trip.
- 58:50Speaker 2: That's right, Bobby, that's right. So last week you purposely
- 58:53Speaker 2: left the Canary Escape. This afternoon you purposely upset the
- 58:57Speaker 2: fish bowl. That was right, son, They love a bit
- 59:00Speaker 2: had diversion. Dad can only have one purpose to mask
- 59:02Speaker 2: an act. When his mother and I were chasing that
- 59:05Speaker 2: canary last week, while they were saving the goldfish today,
- 59:09Speaker 2: Bobby took the two plates of rabbit stew, his mother's
- 59:11Speaker 2: and his aunts and switched them off. That's what you
- 59:15Speaker 2: told Bobby to do every time they had rabbit stew,
- 59:17Speaker 2: Gordini to switch the two women's plates because you knew Gudini.
- 59:22Speaker 2: You knew the secret of those rabbits. What secretary, what
- 59:25Speaker 2: are you talking about?
- 59:26Speaker 7: My strong Bobby?
- 59:27Speaker 2: Will you leave the room now, please, yes, sir, I
- 59:33Speaker 2: don't understand either. Ri. Doctor Prowdy said today that rabbits
- 59:36Speaker 2: are immune to arsenic. So if you fed rabbits lettuce
- 59:39Speaker 2: or carrots which had been dosed with the poison, it
- 59:41Speaker 2: wouldn't hurt them a bit, but their flesh would become
- 59:44Speaker 2: permeated with it. Then if you made a rabbit stew,
- 59:48Speaker 2: you'd be arsenically poisoned dead. You found arsenic in the
- 59:51Speaker 2: rabbit touch. That proved the animals were being fed the
- 59:55Speaker 2: poisons while they were still alive. Then they were slaughtered
- 59:57Speaker 2: and cooked into a stew, and yet only one portion
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: of the stew was poisoned. How is that possible. Who
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: could have controlled the preparation of the stew so rigidly
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: that one portion was cooked with poisoned rabbits and the
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: other with unpoisoned rabbits. Only one person, the person who
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: wouldn't let anyone else feed the rabbits, the person whouldn't
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: let anyone else prepare food in her kitchen, the cook herself. There,
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: my sister Syah. Yes, Missus Hayes, your sister Sarah. She
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: obviously wasn't trying to poison herself or Bobby's who always
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: refused rabbit stews. She could only have been trying to
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: poison you. Oh Gordini used to be a chemist. You
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: saw Sarah brink sprinkle a white powder on the rabbit's
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: food in the hutch. One day, you scraped some of
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: it up, analyzed it, saw the whole thing in a flash,
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: And to save Missus Hayes life, you got Bobby to
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: switch place every time the sisters had rabbit stew. And
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: Bobby did so, never realizing the significance of his act.
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: And so you got Sarah brink to poison herself. But why,
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: mister Queen, why didn't my sister want to kill me?
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: I have nothing?
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: Oh, you you underestimate your wealth. Missus aids, you have
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: a boy, a son, and all your sister's possessions couldn't
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: buy her that she wanted Bobby.
- 1:01:13Speaker 5: Yes, Nikki, she wanted Bobby.
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: I'm sure that all of you are as happy as
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: I am to learn that Bobby was not the culprit.
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: The first time I heard the play in rehearsal, my
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: money went down on the doctor. But as I said,
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: I'm always wrong about these things. Our performance engaged the
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: talents of three members of the original cast of the
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: Ellery Queen series, Hugh Marlowe, prominent star of the Broadway
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: stage and motion pictures, who created the role of Ellery Queen,
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: fantas Artaga has inspected Richard Queen, and Ted Decarcia once
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: more in the part of Sergeant Vley. Nicky was played
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: by Charlotte Keane. Next week, Storm in a Teacup as
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: a motion picture, Storm in a Teacup was one of
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: those all two rare events, a comedy of solid warmth
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: and character, a photoplay about real people. If you join
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: us next week you will find I think that the
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: story has lost none of its warm humor in translation
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: to radio for the first time. Next Sunday, then you
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: have an appointment to meet missus Honoria, Hegety, her dog Patsy,
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: and the people they stirred into a storm in a teacup.
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: The Adventure of the Bad Boy was written by Ellery Queen.
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: The continuity was by George Faulkner. The original music was
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: composed and conducted by Lynn Murray. Our editor is Howard Teichmann,
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: and the entire production was under the direction of George Zachary.
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: The other players turned in today's broadcast were Brad Barker,
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: Harold Durnforth, Sarah Fussells, John Gibson, April Harris, Jane Houston
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: and Seymour, Walter Vaughn, and Guy Wallace. The board Theater

- 1:03:44Speaker 13: This is NBC, the National Broadcasting Company.
- 1:04:00Speaker 15: This is Andrew from Otrwesterns dot Com. I wanted to
- 1:04:03Speaker 15: invite you to come take a look at our site.

- 1:04:16Speaker 15: You're listening to the great detectives of Old time Radio
- 1:04:19Speaker 15: with Adam Graham. Now let's get back into the show.
- 1:04:29Speaker 14: Welcome back.
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: Well, a very fascinating and involved mystery, and that's not
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: entirely surprising, but still I found it pretty interesting. This
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: episode actually was a remake of a play from the
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: Ellery Queens series that aired between nineteen thirty nine and forty.
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: Venture of the Bad Boy was actually the seventh story
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: that was aired back in nineteen thirty nine, and that
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: may also explain why it seemed a little perhaps a
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: little bit more melodramatic than your typical Ellery Queen story
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: or most nineteen forties detective story scripts. And so the
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: Ford Theater really did radio listeners then and particularly radio
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: listeners of the future such a great service because none
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: of these original hour long Ellery Queen mysteries are in circulation,
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: but this episode of the Ford Theater, which recreated one
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: of those episodes is, and that was definitely a treat.
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: There are a couple other notes I should add. They
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: didn't actually do the armchair detective thing for the the
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: Ellery Queens series back in these early episodes. That was
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: something that was a later innovation. But I thought that,
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: despite the urging of the host, that our armchair detectives
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: would take a stab at it. And the one thing
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: I do kind of wonder about is when I look
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: at the date of this program January fourth of nineteen
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: forty eight, there actually was an ongoing Ellery Queen's series
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: airing on ABC that we've been listening to with Lawrence
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: Dopkin and then Howard Culver. I'm curious how they managed
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: it from a rights perspective, but I honestly don't know
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: how they would do that. But at any rate, however
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: they did it, it was a very enjoyable hour. But
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: we're not quite done with Ellery Queen yet, even though
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: we've listened to all the American Ellery Queen episodes, because
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: next week next week we're heading down Under for an
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: Australian episode of Ellery Queen as we wrap up the
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: series on the Great Detectives of Old Time Radio. In
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: the meantime, Sendor comments to Box thirteen at Great Detectives
