Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the 1962 Roman Missal. The feast of Saint John Leonardi, October 9 in the year of our Lord 2026. Saint John Leonardi was born at Luca in Tuscany in 1541. He studied pharmacy but he left this profession to become a priest. He preached and taught seeking especially to instruct boys in Christian doctrine.

In 1574 at the age of 33 he founded the Order of Clerics Regular of the Mother of God, an undertaking which caused him many hardships. He was also associated with the founding of the first Society of Priests dedicated to working in foreign missions. Under subsequent Popes this small order grew into the Society for the Propagation of the Faith and for this reason John Leonardi is often called the founder of that society. In addition to these efforts he restored discipline in different religious congregations by his charity and wisdom. He died at Rome in the year of our Lord 1609.

Commemorated today are saints Dennis, Rusticus, and Eleutherius, martyrs. Dionysius, Dennis, the first bishop of Paris accompanied by the priest Rusticus and the deacon Eleutherius, was sent to Lutetia in the third century. After carrying out his mission there for several years, he was beheaded with his companions at Cataleacus, now Saint Denis, where they erected over his tomb a basilica. Here the kings of France were buried. He is one of the 14 auxiliary saints.
• 2:27
The gospel and collect show forth the Christian heroism of these murders who fearlessly confessed the name of Christ before men and remained firm in the midst of their sufferings. In the ninth century Saint Dionysius was erroneously identified with Saint Dionysius the Areopagite whence the Epistle in the Mass relating the conversion of the latter saint which happened when Saint Paul passed through Greece in his second journey. In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost. Amen. The introit.
• 3:19
By the words of the Lord are his works. The sun giving light hath looked upon all things, and full of glory of the Lord is his work. Sing ye to the Lord a new canticle. Sing to the Lord all the earth. Glory be to the father, and to the son, and to the Holy Ghost as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be, through all ages of ages.
• 3:52
Amen. By the words of the Lord are his works. The sun giving light hath looked upon all things and full of glory of the Lord is his work. The Collect. Let us pray.
• 4:13
O God, who for the propagation of the faith among the nations wast pleased in a wondrous manner to raise up blessed John thy confessor, and through him didst in thy church, gather together a new family for the instruction of the faithful. Grant to us thy servants that we may so profit by his teaching as to attain everlasting rewards. A commemoration of many martyrs. O God, who this day didst strengthen blessed Dennis, thy martyr and bishop with fortitude in suffering and didst associate Rusticus and Eleutherias with him in preaching thy glory to the heathen. Grant we beseech thee that following their example we may for love of thee despise worldly success and may not fear worldly misfortune.
• 5:24
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the second letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians. Brethren, being entrusted by God's mercy with this ministry, we do not play the coward. We renounce all shame faced concealment.
• 6:02
There must be no crooked ways, no falsifying of God's word. It is by making the truth publicly known that we recommend ourselves to the conscience of every human being in God's sight. Our gospel is a mystery, yes, but it is only a mystery to those who are on the road to perdition. Those whose unbelieving minds have been blinded by the God this world worships so that the glorious gospel of Christ, God's image, cannot reach them with the rays of its illumination. After all, it is not ourselves we proclaim.
• 6:59
We proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. God, who commanded light to shine out of darkness, has kindled a light in our hearts, whose shining is to make known his glory as he revealed it in the features of Jesus Christ. Yes. All this is for your sakes. And as the grace of God is more widely distributed, the greater grows the volume of thanks that will be rendered to his name.
• 7:42
No. We do not play the coward. Though the outward part of our nature is being worn down, our inner life is refreshed from day to day. This light and momentary affliction brings with it a reward multiplied every way loading us with everlasting glory. If only we will fix our eyes on what is unseen, not on what we can see.
• 8:20
What we can see lasts but for a moment. What is unseen is eternal. The gradual. My heart was aflame. I was pierced to the quick, and I knew not why.
• 8:45
Zeal for the honor of thy house has consumed me. My utterance is like a sharp sword. Under cover of his hand he has protected me. Here is an arrow he has chosen out carefully. Alleluia.
• 9:04
Alleluia. I will be thy theme continually, apportant now in the eyes of the multitude, and thou art strong to defend me. Alleluia. A continuation of the holy gospel according to Luke. At that time Jesus appointed 72 others and sent them before him two and two into all the cities and villages he himself was to visit.
• 9:42
The harvest, he told them, is plentiful enough but the laborers are few. You must ask the Lord to whom the harvest belongs to send laborers out for the harvesting. Go then and remember I am sending you out to be like lambs among wolves. You are not to carry purse or wallet or shoes. You are to give no one greeting on your way.
• 10:16
When you enter a house, say first of all, peace be to this house. And if those who dwell there are men of goodwill, your good wishes shall come down upon it. If not, they will come back to you the way they went. Remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they have to give you. The laborer has a right to his maintenance.
• 10:44
Do not move from one house to another. When you enter a city and they make you welcome, be content to eat the fare they offer you and heal those who are sick there and tell them the kingdom of God is close upon you. The offertory. I have been made a minister of the church in virtue of the commission given me by God to make known his word among you in all its fullness. The secret.
• 11:29
Receive, O Lord, the clean oblation of the saving victim, and grant that at the intercession of blessed John thy confessor it may be offered day by day among all nations. A commemoration of many martyrs. Graciously accept we beseech thee, O Lord, the offerings of thy people in honour of thy saints, and sanctify us through their intercession. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.
• 12:20
The common preface. Just it is indeed and fitting right in for our salvation that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, father almighty, everlasting God. Through whom the angels praise thy majesty. The dominions worship it. The power stand in awe.
• 12:46
The heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest.
• 13:19
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion, all that once stood to my credit, I now write down as loss for the love of Christ. The post communion. Let us pray.
• 13:48
Comforted with the holy mysteries of thy precious body and blood, we beseech thee, O Lord, that by the example of blessed John, thy confessor, we may be zealous to proclaim what he believed, and to put in practice what he taught. Who livest and reignest with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A commemoration of many martyrs. We beseech thee, o Lord, that the sacraments we have received may, through the intercession of thy blessed martyrs, Dennis, Rusticus, and Eleutherius, avail us for the advancement of our eternal salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost.
• 14:53
