- 0:56Speaker 2: Welcome back to the Richard Sherman Podcast, and I have
- 0:59Speaker 2: an incredible guess one of the best trades the Seahawks
- 1:02Speaker 2: have ever made an end season John. John, I'm not
- 1:05Speaker 2: gonna keep giving you so much credit, but your a
- 1:06Speaker 2: great job with this one. You ended last season with
- 1:09Speaker 2: fifty nine receptions, two TVs one pump return touchdown and
- 1:12Speaker 2: two kick return. One of the fastest players I've ever seen,
- 1:16Speaker 2: Rashid Shie. Appreciate you joining me.
- 1:18Speaker 4: Brother, Thank you for having me appreciation.
- 1:19Speaker 2: No, it's my pleasure. So how does it feel being
- 1:22Speaker 2: back to training camp after winning your first Super Bowl?
- 1:24Speaker 4: Yeah, it feels good. Glad to be back to work
- 1:27Speaker 4: with these guys.
- 1:27Speaker 1: I'm glad to have a full offseason here with OTAs
- 1:30Speaker 1: and you know, training camps, you know, everything flows and operates,
- 1:33Speaker 1: and seeing.
- 1:33Speaker 4: How we could build another championship team. And so far
- 1:36Speaker 4: it's been amazing.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Now we're gonna we're gonna take it to the beginning.
- 1:39Speaker 2: We're gonna take it back to New Orleans. Because in
- 1:41Speaker 2: New Orleans you were the go to guy, you know
- 1:44Speaker 2: during that season. Now, it was a season you know
- 1:46Speaker 2: that left something to be desired for New Orleans. So
- 1:49Speaker 2: to go from a season like that where you're doing
- 1:51Speaker 2: your best, you're doing everything you can, but the team
- 1:53Speaker 2: success isn't great to a Super Bowl contender, I mean
- 1:57Speaker 2: that had to be crazy for you.
- 1:59Speaker 4: Absolutely. Yeah, the change was.
- 2:02Speaker 1: It was a bit tough at first, you know, just
- 2:04Speaker 1: obviously being in one place and then transforming your whole
- 2:07Speaker 1: life to another place. You know, it's never easy, but
- 2:10Speaker 1: I feel like I made the most out of the transition.
- 2:12Speaker 1: I just stuck to what I knew, and that was
- 2:14Speaker 1: that was football and not making it too much else
- 2:17Speaker 1: than that, and that was my main focus, and just
- 2:19Speaker 1: coming in and just to Seattle, just being myself.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Was there any familiarity with the offense, you know, just
- 2:26Speaker 2: Kubiak being there before and then you know him coming here.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Obviously there was familiarity with you. So did that help
- 2:33Speaker 2: the transition at all? Absolutely?
- 2:35Speaker 1: It didn't take more than maybe two weeks just to
- 2:37Speaker 1: get all the installs and everything back into my mind
- 2:40Speaker 1: is hearing everything? Yeah, I had Koubak in New Orleans
- 2:43Speaker 1: and being able to have him there and transition to here,
- 2:46Speaker 1: it made the transition way way smoother.
- 2:48Speaker 4: So yeah, I was tinkling for that.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Now. I want to say there was probably of the
- 2:54Speaker 2: last four games of the season, I would say you
- 2:56Speaker 2: won three of them. Nah, I mean, look you humbly.
- 3:01Speaker 2: I'm no humble man, but obviously this is a team game.
- 3:04Speaker 2: But I would say your impact either directly impacted to
- 3:07Speaker 2: win or you changed the tide of the game. And
- 3:09Speaker 2: I'll start with that Rams game when you had that
- 3:11Speaker 2: pump return, because we were there was Thursday night football
- 3:14Speaker 2: and they were in control of that game for the
- 3:16Speaker 2: most part, for a good portion of that game, and
- 3:18Speaker 2: to your pump return, and your pump return was probably
- 3:21Speaker 2: the first like moment in that second half where we
- 3:24Speaker 2: were like, hey, like a few more stops, Yeah, this
- 3:27Speaker 2: becomes a ball game. What was going through your mind
- 3:30Speaker 2: during those games because you didn't get a ton of opportunities,
- 3:35Speaker 2: you know, in the past game. But every time you
- 3:37Speaker 2: got an opportunity, whether it's in the return game or
- 3:39Speaker 2: the past game, boy you made most of it.
- 3:41Speaker 1: That's really all I was waiting for was my opportunity
- 3:44Speaker 1: whenever it was going to come to staying locked in
- 3:45Speaker 1: throughout the game, whether it's prump return, kick return, as
- 3:48Speaker 1: a receiver, getting the ball out the backfield, it didn't matter.
- 3:51Speaker 1: I was just going to stay prepared for that moment.
- 3:53Speaker 2: I knew.
- 3:53Speaker 1: That's why you know, John brought me here, was for
- 3:55Speaker 1: those moments just like that, and you know, just to
- 3:58Speaker 1: be able to make those plays in those moments for
- 4:00Speaker 1: this team, it meant so much and obviously it carried momentum,
- 4:04Speaker 1: and that's all we really needed.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Talk about Jay and the relationship you guys have and
- 4:09Speaker 2: what goes into those moments, because I think you know,
- 4:11Speaker 2: not that I'm not calling fans casual, but they don't
- 4:14Speaker 2: always understand how much planning and how much game planning
- 4:17Speaker 2: goes into special teams, Right Like these hick returns and
- 4:20Speaker 2: put returns don't just magically happen. It's not like, well
- 4:22Speaker 2: this guy's slipped and I went here.
- 4:23Speaker 4: It was.
- 4:24Speaker 2: It's planning, it's set up, it's seeing an understanding patterns.
- 4:27Speaker 2: So yeah, talk about it.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Every single one of those returns, especially the Rams return,
- 4:32Speaker 1: it was all, like you said, game plan throughout the week.
- 4:35Speaker 1: I give Jay all the credit in the world whenever
- 4:37Speaker 1: I get a chance to, because he when I'm back there,
- 4:40Speaker 1: I'm just reminded of all the preparation I've had.
- 4:42Speaker 4: Through the week.
- 4:43Speaker 1: You know, where the punter's gonna punt it, once I
- 4:45Speaker 1: cast the ball, where's the return going, where my teammate
- 4:48Speaker 1: is going to be, And all I really have to
- 4:50Speaker 1: do is cast the ball and just you know, make
- 4:52Speaker 1: a few guys miss. But yeah, I know Jay is
- 4:54Speaker 1: always putting us in the best position each and every week,
- 4:58Speaker 1: and he's super locked in he's he's so, and that
- 5:00Speaker 1: it makes us, you know, just being able to go
- 5:02Speaker 1: out there and play fast and free.
- 5:03Speaker 4: So I give them all the credit, man.
- 5:05Speaker 2: And now you finally you're here, you win a super Bowl.
- 5:11Speaker 2: It was obviously during your time in New Orleans, it
- 5:14Speaker 2: didn't seem like a great chance for you guys to
- 5:16Speaker 2: get to the super Bowl. But you get to Seattle.
- 5:18Speaker 2: You guys, you make tremendous plays in the playoffs. You
- 5:21Speaker 2: made I remember a long pass in the Rams game.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Let's sparked that one. You tone said it in both
- 5:26Speaker 2: of the both the Divisional in the NFC Championship game.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Talk me through that process, because it correct me if
- 5:35Speaker 2: I'm wrong that you hadn't had a ton of playoff
- 5:37Speaker 2: experience going in.
- 5:38Speaker 4: None at all, not at all. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Just I feel like being a part of this team
- 5:43Speaker 1: and being part of the organization up through the playoff run,
- 5:46Speaker 1: it just allowed me to stay so focused and so
- 5:48Speaker 1: locked in that I was just out there to go
- 5:50Speaker 1: out and play fast, and when the time came and
- 5:53Speaker 1: my number was called, I was able to make the play.
- 5:55Speaker 1: And that's all that mattered to me at that time.
- 5:58Speaker 1: And I felt like that's what makes this team special
- 5:59Speaker 1: is there's no egos. You know, when the numbers call
- 6:01Speaker 1: and make the play and move on. Don't dwell on
- 6:04Speaker 1: if you're making the player if you're not, just keep
- 6:07Speaker 1: pushing forward. And that's how I was able to keep
- 6:09Speaker 1: that mindset throughout the games. And it was as simple
- 6:12Speaker 1: as that, just just staying ready for what my number
- 6:14Speaker 1: was called.
- 6:15Speaker 2: So you get the biggest ring I've ever seen in
- 6:17Speaker 2: my life ever all season, and you get an incredible contract. Yes,
- 6:22Speaker 2: talk me through how much. I don't know how much,
- 6:27Speaker 2: because to get that it gives you such security. You know,
- 6:30Speaker 2: it gives you such a feeling that, hey, this organization
- 6:32Speaker 2: really wanted me, they value me, they appreciate me. Is
- 6:35Speaker 2: that the feeling that you got.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Absolutely I was definitely glad to come back. This is
- 6:40Speaker 1: where I wanted to be for these next few years
- 6:43Speaker 1: and years to come. But I wouldn't say security as
- 6:48Speaker 1: in myself. I still have so much more. I want
- 6:50Speaker 1: to prove not only to the organization, to put to
- 6:52Speaker 1: myself and my teammates, to show that, you know, I
- 6:56Speaker 1: could be the playmaker that they, you know, want me
- 6:58Speaker 1: to be and the teammate that that they expect me
- 7:01Speaker 1: to be being here, showing up every day with the
- 7:03Speaker 1: right mindset and continuing to grow with all these guys
- 7:06Speaker 1: in the locker room, and you know that this team
- 7:09Speaker 1: makes it super easy for me to do that.
- 7:10Speaker 2: And Sam Darnold. From from everything I've seen and from
- 7:13Speaker 2: everything I've heard, this training camp has absolutely been dealing. Yes,
- 7:17Speaker 2: And last year people talked about you guys' relationship because
- 7:21Speaker 2: your your targets and your your receptions dramatically dropped when
- 7:25Speaker 2: you when you got here from what you were getting
- 7:27Speaker 2: in New Orleans. And you're such an explosive and fast
- 7:29Speaker 2: player that it sometimes it's tough and people don't understand
- 7:31Speaker 2: it's tough to build chemistry in the middle of the season,
- 7:34Speaker 2: but you've had it off season now. Was there anything
- 7:36Speaker 2: special that you and Sam did. Did you go out
- 7:39Speaker 2: to California and spend some time and work out with
- 7:41Speaker 2: him to help build that?
- 7:42Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely spend some time in California. A lot of
- 7:45Speaker 1: time thought OTAs. I feel like that's when the real
- 7:47Speaker 1: time was built. Getting on timing him, getting used to,
- 7:50Speaker 1: you know, my speed, and getting out of and out
- 7:52Speaker 1: of brakes and having him trust me. That's the biggest
- 7:54Speaker 1: thing is it's trust with the quarterback. I'm letting him
- 7:56Speaker 1: know that I'm going to be open. So that's that's
- 7:59Speaker 1: the biggest saying. It's continuing to build from otis in
- 8:01Speaker 1: the camp and through the season. So I'm so excited
- 8:04Speaker 1: and he shows up every day and we're ready to work.

- 10:24Speaker 2: And listen, I know a little something about being all
- 10:27Speaker 2: in the legion of boom energy. It was not casual.
- 10:30Speaker 2: We didn't walk on the field hoping people noticed us.
- 10:34Speaker 2: We set the tone, we brought the energy. We made

- 11:08Speaker 2: Lids and go all in all season only in store
- 11:12Speaker 2: at Lids. Now you have in your receiver room such
- 11:17Speaker 2: an incredible underrated receiver room, because I don't think enough
- 11:19Speaker 2: people are talking about you guys. I mean, you got
- 11:22Speaker 2: two Offensive Player of the year's in there, triple crown winner,
- 11:26Speaker 2: one of the most the fastest, most explosive players in
- 11:28Speaker 2: the National Football League. Have you taken any any tips
- 11:32Speaker 2: or learned from from Cooper or JSN throughout your time here?
- 11:36Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 11:36Speaker 1: Absolutely, a lot from Coop, I would say from the
- 11:40Speaker 1: receiver standpoint, or like in the classroom, Coop on the
- 11:43Speaker 1: field a lot from JS and I watch a lot
- 11:45Speaker 1: of film on them. Man, that's how he moves, how
- 11:47Speaker 1: he gets open. He's so deceptive and smart and just
- 11:50Speaker 1: with Coop being in the room with us and just
- 11:53Speaker 1: being able to teach us and you know, have us
- 11:55Speaker 1: understand what the plays mean and how to set things
- 11:58Speaker 1: up when the time is right.
- 12:00Speaker 4: Like you said, we have a special room.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Not a lot of not a lot of people are
- 12:03Speaker 1: talking about it, but we're excited. We know we could
- 12:05Speaker 1: bring to the table for this offense and we have
- 12:08Speaker 1: a lot of guys who can make a lot of plays.
- 12:10Speaker 2: And talk about Sam Darnold now, because you know, there's
- 12:14Speaker 2: been a lot of speculation about him, a lot of
- 12:16Speaker 2: things said good and bad throughout his time, but it
- 12:19Speaker 2: just seems like his trajectory is finally getting to the point,
- 12:23Speaker 2: you know, a top five pick like he was coming
- 12:26Speaker 2: out and he looks the case. I mean, you look
- 12:28Speaker 2: at the playoff run, unbelievable. He really was dealing in
- 12:30Speaker 2: that NFC Championship game, one of the best games I've seen.
- 12:34Speaker 2: What have you seen from him and what growth have
- 12:36Speaker 2: you seen from the first year you were here to now.
- 12:38Speaker 1: He's such a hard worker and he truly cares about
- 12:41Speaker 1: the offense and how we kind of operate a farm
- 12:44Speaker 1: a daily basis. And when your quarterback is dialed in
- 12:47Speaker 1: like that and keyed in on everybody, you know, you
- 12:50Speaker 1: just it just kind of fees into the whole offense
- 12:52Speaker 1: and the run that he had last year. Obviously, I've
- 12:55Speaker 1: been watching Sam for a long time, but to be
- 12:57Speaker 1: a part of it and see how he worked and see,
- 12:59Speaker 1: you know, how how he how he dealt with adversity
- 13:02Speaker 1: throughout his career and now ultimately a super Bowl when
- 13:04Speaker 1: he quarterback him And I don't know what else people
- 13:06Speaker 1: have got to say, but I mean, he just shows
- 13:08Speaker 1: up and he keeps his head down any works, doesn't
- 13:10Speaker 1: doesn't listen to the noise. It's just focus on how
- 13:13Speaker 1: he can be better. And yeah, I know we truly
- 13:15Speaker 1: appreciate him around this building.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I bet. I mean it's it's good. I'm looking
- 13:20Speaker 2: forward to seeing how he builds on that playoff run because,
- 13:24Speaker 2: like I said, it just a better rapport with you.
- 13:26Speaker 2: I mean, guys, like a royal starting to blossom. I mean,
- 13:29Speaker 2: he's having a fantastic camp. The young rookie Tadarian Price
- 13:32Speaker 2: seems to be having a really great camp in the
- 13:34Speaker 2: past game and in the run game. What have you
- 13:38Speaker 2: seen from Brian Fleury since he's come in that that
- 13:41Speaker 2: is a little bit different than it was last year.
- 13:43Speaker 1: Yeah, with Brian, he set an expectation from the first
- 13:48Speaker 1: day that he came in and it was the exact
- 13:50Speaker 1: same expectation as last year. We played fast, we played physical,
- 13:53Speaker 1: and that's the standard. And he set the standard and
- 13:55Speaker 1: he's super you know, focusing locked in on that, not
- 14:00Speaker 1: geting us away from the sanders we said last year.
- 14:02Speaker 4: And I feel like it's just gone so smoothly.
- 14:04Speaker 1: I feel like he just came in and we've been
- 14:06Speaker 1: able to connect with all the guys and like I said,
- 14:09Speaker 1: just the mindset that we have, he fits that so well.
- 14:13Speaker 1: And yeah, so far, it's been nothing but amazing. I'm
- 14:16Speaker 1: super excited for the season.
- 14:17Speaker 2: And you rarely get a defensive player to admit that
- 14:20Speaker 2: the offenses is rarely Ernest just said, this has been
- 14:26Speaker 2: an offensive camp so far, and this is the number
- 14:28Speaker 2: one defense in football last year. What does it mean
- 14:31Speaker 2: to you to hear that from from one of your
- 14:32Speaker 2: players during training camp. Yeah, No, that's that's exciting. Going
- 14:36Speaker 2: against this defense every day is definitely getting us better.
- 14:39Speaker 2: And you know, we worked so hard throughout the week
- 14:41Speaker 2: and and you know, doing the you know one on
- 14:44Speaker 2: ones against you know guys like Spoon and you know,
- 14:46Speaker 2: all these great, you.
- 14:47Speaker 4: Know guys that we have.
- 14:49Speaker 1: It's just gonna get us better and more prepared. And
- 14:51Speaker 1: I feel like the offenses, you know, we came out
- 14:54Speaker 1: and just you know, kind of clicked from the OTAs.
- 14:56Speaker 1: So now we just kept the same momentum that we had,
- 14:59Speaker 1: and you know, I think it's going to turn out
- 15:01Speaker 1: great for us when it comes to Sundays.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Now. I wanted to ask this questions this last year,
- 15:04Speaker 2: but y'all were in the season. I haven't seen you since,
- 15:06Speaker 2: but that kick return against San Francisco that was the
- 15:10Speaker 2: ultimate tone to I mean, the smoke was still on
- 15:13Speaker 2: the field from the case and you guys did what
- 15:17Speaker 2: was it something you saw? Was it just a spur
- 15:20Speaker 2: of the moment because you hit it, and I mean yeah,
- 15:24Speaker 2: it was almost the game was over immediate.
- 15:26Speaker 4: That's what it felt like.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, another testament to our coaches. We were you
- 15:32Speaker 1: know game planning for that to hit exactly where it hit,
- 15:35Speaker 1: and you know, I was looking for it and when
- 15:37Speaker 1: I saw the gap open, hit a full speed and
- 15:39Speaker 1: it was just me and the kicker made a miss,
- 15:41Speaker 1: and you know, the stadium erupted. But for that moment
- 15:44Speaker 1: right there, my first playoff game in that atmosphere, something
- 15:48Speaker 1: that I always remember.
- 15:48Speaker 4: It was crazy.
- 15:49Speaker 2: As an All Pro returner, I have to ask your
- 15:51Speaker 2: opinion because it matters and the elite needs to hear it.
- 15:54Speaker 2: What do you feel about the new kickoff? Like you
- 15:57Speaker 2: know where everybody is and the makeup of the new
- 16:00Speaker 2: kickoff kickoff return.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a lot of moving parts. Definitely some adjusting
- 16:04Speaker 1: that that had to happen, but I like it. I
- 16:08Speaker 1: feel like it's just more opportunity for big plays and
- 16:10Speaker 1: that's what the league wants. So yeah, No, as a returner,
- 16:14Speaker 1: I'm all for it.
- 16:15Speaker 4: Like I gotta be one exactly, that's all it takes.
- 16:18Speaker 2: I love that. I love that. So what are your
- 16:20Speaker 2: goals for yourself for this season? I mean, obviously in
- 16:24Speaker 2: All Pro last year, that's that's the top of the top.
- 16:27Speaker 2: You guys were Super Bowl champions, But it doesn't seem
- 16:30Speaker 2: like there's complacency in this building, and it doesn't seem
- 16:33Speaker 2: like complacency for you.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Yeah, no, not at all, not within the building, not
- 16:36Speaker 1: within myself. I have a lot of goals. I just
- 16:39Speaker 1: want to continue to prove, you know that I could
- 16:41Speaker 1: be the dynamic playmaker that I could be for for
- 16:43Speaker 1: my team, be the best team that I could be,
- 16:45Speaker 1: best in the locker room, and.
- 16:47Speaker 4: Continue to grow as developed as a wide receiver.
- 16:49Speaker 2: You know.
- 16:49Speaker 1: I want to reach that thousand yard mark that I
- 16:52Speaker 1: know I can not just be, you know, the vertical guy,
- 16:54Speaker 1: but underneath, you know, middle, contesting catches, you know all that.
- 16:58Speaker 1: That that's my goal and that's where I see myself
- 17:01Speaker 1: progressing throughout this year.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Okay, last question, who are your top five punt and
- 17:06Speaker 2: or kick returners of all time?
- 17:07Speaker 4: Gotta go Hester first, Josh Cribs.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Oh, I'll go Dante Hall, human joy stick, Human joystick.
- 17:23Speaker 4: I got two more. I'll go Falcons. I can't remember
- 17:28Speaker 4: his name right now.
- 17:30Speaker 1: Eighty four Cordell, I'll put him in there.
- 17:35Speaker 4: And oh mm five, I'll go Jacoby Jacoby Jones. Okay, yeah,
- 17:47Speaker 4: I like that.
- 17:48Speaker 3: I like that.
- 17:49Speaker 2: I mean, you you could have put yourself in but um,
- 17:51Speaker 2: you know humble man. I love that well. I wish
- 17:55Speaker 2: you all the best this season. A huge fan of
- 17:57Speaker 2: your work, excited to see you know what what what
- 17:59Speaker 2: you have in store for us this season. I really
- 18:01Speaker 2: appreciate you taking the time to come on here and
- 18:03Speaker 2: and and talk ball with me. Hopefully we can have
- 18:05Speaker 2: you again during the season.
- 18:07Speaker 4: Appreciate your thanks.
- 18:08Speaker 2: You
