- 0:00You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast of First
- 0:02Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:04On our podcast, the goal is not just to share our sermons, but
- 0:08to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're learning and
- 0:10what God is doing in us and in our community.
- 0:13This fall, we're living in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke,
- 0:16and John and learning how to live from our model, Jesus.
- 0:19This conversation was inspired by our series The Gospels.
- 0:23You can find more information about our church at
- 0:25fumccollingswood.org. Thanks for joining us for this
- 0:29conversation. So, Scott, you left us high and
- 0:33dry for almost a week. Was it worth it?
- 0:37Going to Kentucky? Yeah, absolutely.
- 0:39Top three things I'm not going to be personal, learning time
- 0:45with God, whatever aspects of it.
- 0:49I was really glad to have this in person opportunity as kind of
- 0:54the close out part of this cohort with these other pastors
- 1:00and to get the time face to face with most of them.
- 1:04Not all of them were able to make it, but you know, after
- 1:07journeying together over these last 9 or 10 months to end
- 1:12together felt really right and important.
- 1:15So that'd be 1. Part of that was on Thursday
- 1:21when we were wrapping up. The last thing was just kind of
- 1:25some time in our smaller cohort. There were 4 cohorts all
- 1:30together. So time in just our 15 or so
- 1:33people at least took time to share kind of where we're at and
- 1:38where what we're kind of looking to now that this cohort is over.
- 1:44And then we just took time to pray for people, like after they
- 1:48shared, we'd take some time to pray for them and all kinds of
- 1:53different things were praying. It wasn't like, it's like, all
- 1:55right, this one thing for everybody, but some people are
- 1:59facing medical challenges, other people who were not sure about
- 2:05some aspect of their ministry or one guy's totally changing
- 2:11ministries. Like when we started the cohort,
- 2:14he was pastoring a local church. And then just last week, he
- 2:21moved from Oregon to Illinois to become the pastor, the campus
- 2:27chaplain for Olivet University. Wow.
- 2:32Yeah. And so being able to pray for
- 2:34him and kind of for Commission him into that new ministry.
- 2:39And that was a really sweet time.
- 2:41And then personally, it's just it was good to see my my sister
- 2:44and her family and get a few days with them, even though I
- 2:48was in and out a lot, you know, the most of the time that I was
- 2:53there. Know it well.
- 2:55Yeah, know it. So those those would be my three
- 2:58things. So was it hosted at Asbury or
- 3:02was it just near? No, most of our time we spent at
- 3:07a venue connected to the lead pastors for a house church
- 3:13movement, Austin and Maddie Wofford, if you've seen them at
- 3:17New Room before. What town?
- 3:20In Lexington, OK, yeah, they they lead Arise Church.
- 3:25But we did spend the afternoon on Wednesday in Hughes
- 3:31Auditorium. And some of the people who had
- 3:34been there during the outpouring, even some of the
- 3:37people in our cohort who had been students there.
- 3:40And we're now there as like worship leaders and our cohort,
- 3:44they were sharing some stories and talking about things they
- 3:47learned during that time. And it was a sweet time.
- 3:51And it was sweet for me to get back into Hughes Auditorium,
- 3:56where I spent so much time as a student while as at Asbury.
- 4:02Literally. Yeah.
- 4:04June will be the 20th anniversary of our graduation.
- 4:09Thanks for that. You're welcome.
- 4:12But to just to, to be there in Hughes in a place where God has
- 4:17spoken to me. And this is a sweet time.
- 4:23And to so many, for those that may not know specifically,
- 4:27Hughes is the auditorium in which the Asbury Outpouring was
- 4:31held and all them the worship and where it started and.
- 4:34Yeah, and also where Asbury has very Chapel services three days
- 4:38a week, you know. But they do have, I don't know
- 4:41if it's the same at the university as it is at the
- 4:43seminary, but they have like, I think a Chapel and a prayer room
- 4:48in like every building, which is really cool that like literally
- 4:52at any point, like, oh, let me find a little space, little holy
- 4:55space to be with Jesus. But yeah, I got to go to Hughes
- 4:58as well. I didn't realize how close it
- 5:00was to where I was taking my classes, like right across the
- 5:04road. So yeah.
- 5:06Yeah. Well, just like the university
- 5:08is much bigger than the seminary.
- 5:10So I was like, I don't know where in that mess is the
- 5:13auditorium. And so got to go over and there
- 5:16was someone just practicing the organ.
- 5:18And so I just got like sit there and have the whole space and
- 5:21that was really good. Holy time and a good break from
- 5:25my classes and just all of the history, even prior to the
- 5:30outpouring of just, you know, hear you hearing from God there
- 5:34and just knowing the type of people that Asbury attracts.
- 5:37And so the amount of people that had encountered God in such a
- 5:40holy way in that space. Yeah.
- 5:43It's just really, really, it almost seems like Hughes is like
- 5:46a launchpad and the into the world.
- 5:50Yeah, yeah, because the 2023 out where it wasn't the first time
- 5:53something like that happened 19 fourth.
- 5:55Yeah, at least 1970 was a big revival that started there in
- 6:00Hughes and spread out across the whole country and.
- 6:03I think there's on maybe like the 40s that have to.
- 6:06Double, yeah, yeah, it's something maybe even earlier
- 6:10than that, though. I think 1915 comes to my mind.
- 6:13OK, but they talk about it sometimes.
- 6:17It's like a deep well and when the water starts flowing it
- 6:22knows where to go at Asbury. There's there's just some
- 6:27special places that when you step in, it's not because of the
- 6:30place, but what God's done in there.
- 6:32And yeah, and the really awesome.
- 6:34And I'm glad you got to go see your sister, which is nice.
- 6:38And this week, tell us about your sermon prep this week.
- 6:41What did that look like? My sermon prep this week looked
- 6:49like reading through the passage there in Luke on Tuesday and
- 6:57then going for a hike. Just kind of letting it, letting
- 7:01it sit, letting it linger a little bit and then looked over,
- 7:08looked over some notes from a talk I'd heard somebody else
- 7:12give on one of the other versions.
- 7:15Then in John's Gospel specifically, and realized it
- 7:20wasn't really where I was going with this one.
- 7:24Although there are some elements that I, I did bring in.
- 7:27And then just kind of let that stuff sit on the back burner
- 7:32simmering while I was with my cohort Tuesday night and
- 7:35Wednesday and Thursday and driving back from Kentucky
- 7:38Thursday night and then on Saturday sat down and wrote my
- 7:44whole service. That's that's how my sermon
- 7:46prepped looked this week. Yeah, because I remember Friday
- 7:50night at that Tim's football game, we're like, so you're
- 7:52preaching on Sunday. I was like, what?
- 7:55Like I'm set for the 2nd and then I could tell why.
- 8:00But no, I, I something this year, maybe even like leading
- 8:05into summer, it just seems like the preachings been consistently
- 8:11at a level that it hadn't been prior.
- 8:15And I think there's a lot of factors that go into that.
- 8:17But I'm wondering if you've sensed that at all this year,
- 8:21specifically compared to the rest of like your career?
- 8:26Yeah, no, I do think that's true.
- 8:29I was even remarking to someone this morning, they were saying
- 8:33something about the sermon and the feel in the room as I was
- 8:37preaching. And it almost sensed, it almost
- 8:40seemed at certain points that there is like a hush in the room
- 8:44and people are just kind of like leaning forward a little bit,
- 8:47not quite edge of their seats, but but a little bit leaning.
- 8:52They were, they're paying attention.
- 8:53They were engaging. They were listening in a way
- 8:56that made it clear to me that they weren't just listening to
- 9:01my words, you know, And that was that was a beautiful thing to
- 9:06see. But yeah, I, I, I definitely
- 9:09think I have noticed a difference over these last
- 9:13months. And I don't know that I could
- 9:16quite put a finger on when it start.
- 9:20It wasn't like I could say like, oh, at the start of this gospel
- 9:23series or before our, you know, at the start of the summer
- 9:28series on doing life together. I don't even remember what was
- 9:34before that. Was it Habakkuk?
- 9:37Yes. Yeah.
- 9:39Yeah. And then before Habakkuk was a
- 9:42little bit of everything, right? It was kind of like.
- 9:45Yes, when I when I let you break me out of these sermon series.
- 9:51Yeah, I think. Yeah, I totally blame you for.
- 9:53That memory serves me correctly. I think in the one offs there
- 9:58were ones that we're starting to really stand out.
- 10:02And then as we got into Habakkuk and the summer series, it just
- 10:08felt more consistent. It wasn't like, oh, that was a
- 10:12really solid 1. And then like kind of goes back
- 10:15like they were just like becoming more and more
- 10:18consistent. Yeah.
- 10:20If I had to point somewhere, I think I might point back to when
- 10:26we did that Altars of Awakening series.
- 10:30That's kind of like right before Lent.
- 10:32And I don't know that I'd say that Lent felt the same way, but
- 10:35there is something that shifted a bit there.
- 10:41And I think, I think there's a couple things that feed into it
- 10:48and I want to talk about these things without putting myself at
- 10:55the center or sounding like I'm Tooting my own horn.
- 10:59Toot away, Sarah. But just to kind of help people
- 11:03and see where, you know, I think things that have kind of streams
- 11:07that have fed into this larger stream.
- 11:10One, I think our prayer sessions on Tuesday and Thursday, Tuesday
- 11:18nights and Thursday mornings have been part of shifting our
- 11:22church. And I, even though it's not
- 11:24like, you know, everyone in the congregation is coming out for
- 11:28those or whatever. But the, the intentional choice
- 11:31to center prayer in that way, even if it hasn't had an impact,
- 11:38you know, people in the congregation might not say,
- 11:39well, I felt the impact of that. I have felt the impact of that
- 11:45and it has shifted some things for me and in me.
- 11:51And even even going beyond that further back when we did the
- 11:58series back in January, February of 24 when we talked about
- 12:05prayer and fasting. You know, I, I shifted in that
- 12:11season to trying to make that discipline of fasting a much
- 12:17more regular part of my life, which I've tried to do at
- 12:21different points in the past and usually stuck with it for a
- 12:25little while and then not. But since that January 24, it's
- 12:30been a much more consistent part of my life.
- 12:33And it's brought me into more intimacy with God, more openness
- 12:40to his voice. And I think that has had an
- 12:44impact on how I'm hearing from him.
- 12:47And then so then the messages that are on my heart are that
- 12:52much more coming from Him. And so I think those are two
- 12:57things that have kind of contributed to it.
- 13:01Anything you've seen that kind of you think might be a factor
- 13:06into? I literally those were the first
- 13:08two things to come to mind, the prayer sessions.
- 13:11And I know you've been more regular with your fasting on
- 13:13Tuesdays and I've seen those things.
- 13:19I don't want to say keep you centered because it makes it
- 13:25seem like you were all over the place prior to, but almost like
- 13:29a honing in where it's like, I don't know, terminologies for
- 13:35like shooting like arrows and the stuff where it's like, you
- 13:38know how there's like the bullseye bullseye and then
- 13:40there's like the secondary bullseye.
- 13:44So all bullseye. Like I feel like you were in the
- 13:47outer 1 And so still great shot better than most people, but
- 13:52like it just seems like it's just been honing in more and
- 13:55more with your regular connectedness to God and like
- 14:00openness to what the Spirit is leading.
- 14:04And again, yeah, I think that's the the better imagery because
- 14:10you were there before, but it just seems more more honed in.
- 14:17Yeah. And then the word that God gave
- 14:21me for this year was forged, which I feel like has been
- 14:27really true in this season. And this has not been an easy
- 14:33year for me. You know, there's everything
- 14:36that's going on with the lawsuit.
- 14:38That's that's one thing. And then, you know, we entered
- 14:42this year with Josiah's diagnosis fresh, you know, the
- 14:48week of Christmas. And so this whole year has been
- 14:52learning and adjusting and adapting to those new rhythms,
- 14:58as well as seeing some some more marked decline in Meg's
- 15:04condition. And and so all those things
- 15:10could be things that if I allowed them to, would kind of
- 15:14beat me down or beat me up or could even, you know, just lead
- 15:20me into a very dark place. But with that idea, that kind of
- 15:26word over this year of of being forged, I've tried as often as
- 15:31possible to let those things drive me to Jesus and let them
- 15:39be the the anvil that he's using to hammer out the the rough
- 15:45places and shape me more into the person that that he wants me
- 15:52to be. Yeah.
- 15:54And it's it's coming across and in the sermons and I've it's
- 16:01from great to witness that when people think like preaching and
- 16:05all that, it's a lot of like public speaking and becoming a
- 16:09better public speaker. And I wouldn't say that you've
- 16:13necessarily grown exponentially in your public speaking skills,
- 16:19but to see how the spirit is leading you and speaking through
- 16:24you, that's what's becoming, I think more evident as of recent.
- 16:30Because if you look go back like stylistically a year ago, still
- 16:34very similar formats and cadence and you know, your pacing and
- 16:41all of that kind of stuff, but there's just a, a different
- 16:44tone, like you said, even in the space.
- 16:47And it's not that like, you know, part of that could be
- 16:49contributed by the combining of the services.
- 16:52And so that shifts the culture and the, and the feeling within
- 16:55the room. But I don't think that's, I
- 16:59don't think that's the big tangible thing in regards to
- 17:03your sermons that people are recognizing.
- 17:06And they better stop getting used to it because I'm preaching
- 17:09this week. In regards specifically to this
- 17:14week's sermon, I have a couple questions.
- 17:18As you went through your five points, one of the things I
- 17:22thought was great in the .1 of I know it's not the specific
- 17:26wording, but what I took out of it was the ability to discern
- 17:30action based on circumstances. And I added, not prescriptive
- 17:36action, which I think is so important with the jar of
- 17:41perfume, right? Why?
- 17:43Simon was thinking to himself, like, what a waste and, you
- 17:47know, all that kind of stuff. And it's OK.
- 17:50It's not every time someone sees Jesus.
- 17:52We need to be dumping perfume on his feet.
- 17:54And I think sometimes you'll be like, oh, well, it was good in
- 17:56this circumstance. So this is now what all of us
- 17:59should do forever and always. And we need to go buy a lot of
- 18:03Tom Ford clones and break the bottles and put them on Scott's
- 18:06feet. Yeah, I wouldn't recommend it.
- 18:09I really hate when people touch my feet.
- 18:11Well, you know he can just pour it on top of.
- 18:14Just saying, yeah. He'd prefer tobacco, vanilla if
- 18:17you're going to pick a Tom Ford fragrance to spill on his feet.
- 18:21Sure, we'll do that. But this, the sermon also
- 18:25brought us back to a question that we had at a staff meeting
- 18:29recently that you and I, I know, took time to really chew on.
- 18:35I don't even know if we fully came to conclusions, but what is
- 18:38most valuable to you? And so I wanted us to wrestle a
- 18:42little bit more with that. And I'll give context of my
- 18:45answer last time and how I've continued to chew on it as
- 18:50people were saying families and for me value it's it's I go try
- 18:55and go the levels deeper than that is do I value the comfort
- 19:00that my family brings me or do I value feeling like you were
- 19:05saying feeling wanted or needed by the animals, right.
- 19:08And as I've been studying in my teaching, youth and adults, they
- 19:14were talking about trying to relate to seniors, senior
- 19:18citizens, empathizing with how quickly the elderly and the even
- 19:25within the phrasing and their decline, the changes and things
- 19:28they experience and the stuff that they really try to hold on
- 19:32to and what they value most. Like value the freedom to drive
- 19:36because we've been driving and had freedom to do that.
- 19:38The freedom to keep the space that you've lived in for 50
- 19:42years and not have to go to another place for a certain care
- 19:45that you may need. The freedom to whatever it may
- 19:49be, not have to check your sugar regularly or watch your sugars
- 19:52and that kind of stuff. And so like there's things that
- 19:56when we get to those later years when we have to really face that
- 20:00maybe a little more regularly or in big ways where it's like, oh,
- 20:04love my family, families number one.
- 20:07But then at that age. They were like, well, you need
- 20:10to move in with families. Like I'm not moving in with the
- 20:11family. It's like, is family really
- 20:13number #1 or is there something else that we're holding on to
- 20:18that we value a little bit more? And so curious if there's
- 20:22anything since our time at staff meeting that maybe has come to
- 20:26mind that you recognize as one of your higher values in life.
- 20:30Free ice cream does not count. Although surgery on Friday,
- 20:35anyone who wants to drop off ice cream for my recovery, feel
- 20:38free. Everyone wants to add more
- 20:42weight for your new knee to bear.
- 20:43Yes, I'm not getting a new knee. It's not a replacement.
- 20:47Gosh. Anyway, in the context of of
- 20:52this conversation, the the one that's coming, the one that's
- 20:57coming up in my heart is my reputation.
- 21:02So funny my reputation. So I talked about a youth group
- 21:07last night. Is it?
- 21:09Pull up the slides later. Yeah.
- 21:12How so? How?
- 21:13Sister. Yeah, yeah.
- 21:16Well, I think one of the things that I've been just like real,
- 21:23real time, real time going on. I think one of the things I've
- 21:29been realizing over the last few months, and it came out a little
- 21:35bit in the in the sermon yesterday, was the idea of
- 21:40laying down my reputation and what other people think of me
- 21:47for the sake of being faithful to Jesus and all that he's
- 21:51asking me to do or say or be. And letting him be the one that
- 21:58defends me. And not not making decisions
- 22:02based on trying to preserve my own reputation, but making my
- 22:07decisions based on faithfulness to Jesus and entrusting him with
- 22:14whatever the outcome of that is. I think that's bled into my
- 22:20preaching over the last few months in the best of ways.
- 22:24I say, how could your reputation get worse?
- 22:29There's a lot of ways. There's a lot of ways, trust me.
- 22:34Yeah. That we we talked last night
- 22:38about reputation. We went to the story of the
- 22:40demon possessed man Legion and Chapter 9 Luke Gator knife one
- 22:46of those. Gator 9.
- 22:47I know it best from Mark 5. But no, you're fine.
- 22:50And we, and we touched back on that because it expands a little
- 22:52bit more about like the crazy things he was doing.
- 22:55And so we were going into, and it's like, you know, when you
- 22:58hear the story, it's usually focused on the removal of the
- 23:01demons. And I actually ended up cutting
- 23:04out and summarizing that chunk of the story, but looking at the
- 23:09specifics of how he was viewed, what he was known for, and then
- 23:14how people had to recognize the change afterward.
- 23:19How he sat at Jesus's feet and was studied under him.
- 23:23And then how he went out and shared what Jesus had done in
- 23:26his life and talking about how like, what do our A, what do
- 23:32people think of us? What's our reputation, maybe in
- 23:35different circles or whatever? And does that affect how we view
- 23:39ourselves also when we're walking with Jesus, how are we
- 23:44to move forward confidently and who he's created us be what he's
- 23:49calling us to do without fear of what others are thinking or have
- 23:53thought about us, And just to be able to share the good things
- 23:57that Jesus has done in our lives.
- 23:58And I was really, really good. And I got to share a little bit
- 24:02about my previous reputations and also how the thing that
- 24:07could have negative connotations pre Jesus, some of those same
- 24:13things could be used for good layers.
- 24:16So my example was in college, I was known as the distractor and.
- 24:23I can see that, Yep. No one wanted to study with the
- 24:26distractor for whatever reasons. But when people had any issues
- 24:31with school or relationships or life or whatever, they'd call me
- 24:35up. We'd spend a day together and we
- 24:37would just get away from all of that mess and just give them
- 24:43something else to focus on. And so that's what I was known
- 24:47for, and it was helpful and good, but without Jesus.
- 24:51And it's not that I wasn't a believer at that point, I would
- 24:55argue I wasn't a believer. We.
- 24:59Have that conversation another time that I was distracting from
- 25:04the world, but then not pointing them to Jesus and giving them
- 25:08hope and purpose and and good direction.
- 25:12And so now as I've been in ministry for, I was like I think
- 25:16six years and then the kids were like 6. 7.
- 25:20And I was like, well, at least I know when my career ended
- 25:25because I'm about to quit, was saying how like been able to see
- 25:29God use that where I can help people kind of take a step back
- 25:34from all of those issues and then put them on to the right
- 25:38path towards Jesus, not just towards my feelings and emotions
- 25:41and what I think they should do and get them back into Scripture
- 25:45and have that lead and guide them.
- 25:47And yeah, so it's been great to see and have witness God use it
- 25:52for so much greater than I could have ever anticipated.
- 25:54And so using some things that were even even worldly kind of
- 25:59good at the time, but really bring it to a place that draws
- 26:04people to God. And when I am having deeper
- 26:07conversations with people outside of the church, sometimes
- 26:10they come to me for advice. There's usually like a a glass
- 26:15ceiling where it's like, OK, this is all the worldly advice I
- 26:18can give you. If you want to get past this.
- 26:21We got to bring God into the equation because otherwise
- 26:24you're just stuck and refrain from other terminology.
- 26:29But yeah, so that's that's been an interesting thing.
- 26:32And, and I think I'll definitely be throwing this podcast at some
- 26:35of our youth because I think some of them in various degrees
- 26:40and areas of their life are wrestling with stuff similar to
- 26:44you in regards to reputation, holding them back maybe from
- 26:49doing what they know they should.
- 26:51And so that they don't think that it's like, oh, well, I must
- 26:55be a bad Christian if I'm not 100% gung ho, no hold bars kind
- 27:02of stuff because it's a hard place to fully get to.
- 27:05And usually when you think you're there, that means you're
- 27:07probably not there. Right, right.
- 27:09Yeah. It's a lifelong and.
- 27:11Let me just say along those lines, like no part of me is, is
- 27:18trying to say that if this is where you're struggling and this
- 27:23is what you're hoping Jesus will do, you need to start fasting
- 27:28once a week and coming to prayer sessions twice a week.
- 27:31That might be what Jesus asks you to do.
- 27:33That might be where he invites you to go deeper, but it might
- 27:37be something else. It might be that you need to
- 27:40focus on solitude or your Scripture reading or giving or
- 27:47serving or witness. Like there's so many other
- 27:50spiritual disciplines that God uses to form us and shape us.
- 27:55Those are just the two that I've felt in the last year or so that
- 28:00have, you know, taken me to a different place.
- 28:04Yeah, he's always inviting you to go deeper.
- 28:06And in each season, it might look slightly different.
- 28:10And the one that he just Scott just lifted off listed off a
- 28:14handful. The one that you feel most
- 28:17hesitant towards might be 1 worth looking into and taking a
- 28:22little bit more seriously because it's like, Oh well, I
- 28:25can definitely handle this one. That other one.
- 28:28Maybe in a decade we'll get to that.
- 28:31But take they should all be taken seriously into
- 28:34consideration for each and every one of us since we don't have
- 28:40well, did Jesus smell like a girl he talked about.
- 28:46That segue. Her walking away with the smell
- 28:51and we don't know how long it's lasted because it was so much
- 28:55strong, rare perfume. So it's, you know, it would have
- 28:59good projection and lasting power.
- 29:03But it's the same smell on the girl's hair.
- 29:04It would have been on Jesus's feet.
- 29:06Did he just have like rose and lavender feet for like a week?
- 29:11Yeah, I have no idea what it smelled like, nor do I know if
- 29:14the 1st century Jewish culture had the same definitions of
- 29:20femininity and masculinity that we do today.
- 29:25Then. Then I just thought, wow, Jesus
- 29:28smells good. He doesn't smell like he's been
- 29:31walking down the streets behind the donkeys for the last three
- 29:35days. Or, you know, walking through
- 29:37the meat market in town or whatever he is.
- 29:40Yeah. 1st century life in in Israel.
- 29:44There's a lot of smells. There's a lot of smells I can
- 29:48guarantee. I'd have to look back in Chosen
- 29:51season 5 and the story of Mary and Martha where Mary, it shows
- 29:58her going and shopping and trying to find the best perfume
- 30:02available to do it. And so you see like the perfume
- 30:05salesman and kind of laying out, if I remember correctly, I want
- 30:08to say like Jasmine and vanilla was involved.
- 30:12OK, potentially in one of the sense maybe might have not been
- 30:14the one that she ended up getting.
- 30:17But I think they like tried to do the research of like what was
- 30:19considered the highest and rarest quality stuff at the time
- 30:23in that region. And so if you want to smell like
- 30:26Jesus's feet, go watch The Chosen or do some research and.
- 30:30See if we can try a cedar wood kind of guy.
- 30:33Recreate something. Yeah.
- 30:36You had mentioned to me yesterday about theories about
- 30:40his potential, the smell from the perfume of one of the
- 30:43perfume stories having lasted longer.
- 30:46Yeah. Can you remind me?
- 30:49That Yeah, yeah, I heard somebody else talk about this.
- 30:54The one of the other stories from the John anointing, which I
- 30:59think it's John 12/1 to 8 and I think is is where it is.
- 31:04He was talking about how would that second anointing taking
- 31:09place in that week of Holy Week, you know, somewhere on either
- 31:13side of the triumphal entry, thinking about how the scent of
- 31:18that perfume would have still been lingering on Jesus as he
- 31:24hung on the cross. And that was, that was so
- 31:27poignant thought to me. I mean, because for me, like
- 31:33immediately there's layers to that of right, he's being mocked
- 31:37as a king and not a king. And so to have like a rare fancy
- 31:40perfume would be another sign of royalty on him.
- 31:45It's the lingering of people worshipping and laying down the
- 31:49best for him and then also turning away.
- 31:51Not that she turned away from him, but like in general, the
- 31:54procession into town and then within a week and then you also
- 31:58have this anointing oil preparing his feet for the the
- 32:04road that he has to walk down in the the path that God has led
- 32:10him towards in that week. Yeah.
- 32:12And I think Matthew, Mark and John, each in their own way,
- 32:16kind of say that or maybe they put, you know, record the words
- 32:19from Jesus saying that what she has done, she has done to
- 32:23prepare him for burial. And, you know, knowing that his
- 32:28Burrow was going to have to be kind of a rush job because of
- 32:32the impending Sabbath coming and stuff.
- 32:34And, and, and if you're familiar with the stories from the
- 32:38gospels, we we know that's true. He gets pulled down from the
- 32:41cross the last kind of the last minute, wrapped up stuck in the
- 32:45tomb. And on what we know is Easter
- 32:48morning, the women are going to actually give him a proper
- 32:51burial to put all the spices and sense and all those things that
- 32:58I guess did something to preserve the body or at least
- 33:00make it not smell quite as bad as it was decaying.
- 33:03And Jesus never got there right, because because he rose.
- 33:08And So what she did was enough for what he needed.
- 33:13Oh that's good. Well lastly I wanted to cover
- 33:17towards the end of their you for .5.
- 33:21I have lived out of in out of encounter, not for it.
- 33:26And you used one of the quotes that said our prayer sessions of
- 33:30God waits to be wanted. Could you elaborate a little bit
- 33:34more on that phrase of what that means for God waiting to be
- 33:39wanted? Yeah, I think that phrase that
- 33:44God waits to be wanted kind of speaks to God's desire not to
- 33:52force himself into situations. And and that sometimes in our
- 34:01lives, sometimes in the stories of Scripture, God's waiting to
- 34:06act until he's wanted. He's waiting to come until we
- 34:12want him to come. Not, not every time.
- 34:16And I don't think it's some kind of magical wanting meter kind of
- 34:23thing where we just have to get our desire up to a certain level
- 34:27and then boom, God has to respond.
- 34:31But it's like any relationship we have where where we want to
- 34:35spend time with the people who want to spend time with us.
- 34:41And I think, I think that's what Tozier is getting at in that
- 34:45phrase of God waits to be wanted.
- 34:49And so we have to wrestle with the question of whether we
- 34:54actually want God or if we're just kind of content needing
- 34:59him. Well, that's our conversation
- 35:01for today, but that doesn't mean the conversation is over.
- 35:04We'd love to hear your thoughts on these topics as well.
- 35:07To ask a question about anything we've discussed in this episode
- 35:10or to join the conversation, you can head over to

- 35:19conversation.
